Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18OK, so I just went to a brand event.
- 0:21It was a berries class and I had to quickly shower and like run
- 0:25upstairs to do mini scroll. Oh, I have hair like all over my
- 0:28hand because I had to brush my hair with my fingernails because
- 0:33I forgot a hair brush. So my hair on camera, Hopefully
- 0:36these big headphones are like covering it, but it is looking a
- 0:39little unwell as a blonde. I forgot my K18 oil.
- 0:44I forgot my proper shampoo and conditioner.
- 0:46I forgot my hair brush. So she needs a little help.
- 0:49Anyways, let's just get right into the stories for today.
- 0:53So I have two stories for you guys.
- 0:55The 1st is I wanted to quickly cover the underconsumption trend
- 0:59going on on TikTok. So over the past couple of
- 1:02weeks, a new trend has emerged on TikTok called
- 1:05underconsumption core or normal consumption core.
- 1:09As Crystal Andrews writes for Z Feed Quote, it's pretty
- 1:12straightforward. Users are sharing the mundane,
- 1:15normal things in their homes and lives that they use over and
- 1:18over again. Dirty sneakers they've been
- 1:20wearing to the gym for years and years.
- 1:22Showers that contain only supermarket brand shampoo,
- 1:25conditioner and body wash. A kitchen shelf of mismatched
- 1:28glass jars, A2 step skin care routine and a crusty bronzer
- 1:32compact. The focus is on well used, even
- 1:35worn items in low quantities. But the most crucial part is the
- 1:39presentation. There is no attempt to showcase
- 1:42these things in an aesthetic way.
- 1:44It's simply what normal life looks like for the vast majority
- 1:47of people. So I'm sure you guys have seen
- 1:50these videos. They're essentially like in
- 1:52response to, I would say overconsumption and how social
- 1:58media, particularly influencers, really push the overconsumption
- 2:02of like beauty, lifestyle, fashion, all of that, even tech.
- 2:07I would say it's also in response to the like restocking
- 2:11or collection videos, you know, like Stanley collections.
- 2:15Those were so, I mean, they're still really popular, but they
- 2:18were so popular last year at one point, everyone showing that
- 2:21they had a Stanley color for like every type of output they
- 2:24could possibly have, like shelves and shelves of Stanleys.
- 2:28And there's just a few different items like that that just kind
- 2:31of end up like going viral and people get really obsessed with
- 2:34collecting them. It reminds me of like 2015, 2016
- 2:37beauty YouTube. And I definitely fell victim to
- 2:41that. I still have this giant glam
- 2:42station at my house, but it's literally just all those IKEA
- 2:46drawers with like a giant mirror with the glam lights around it.
- 2:50And I love getting ready there. And I think I will always have a
- 2:52glam station. Like it is truly like where I
- 2:54feel my happiest is doing my glam at my big glam station.
- 2:58But my drawers like I have, I don't know, maybe 10 drawers,
- 3:01like big wide drawers and they are just filled with makeup and
- 3:05some of that makeup I have literally had for probably 10
- 3:07years. So I don't really buy makeup
- 3:10anymore because I don't really need to.
- 3:12Like I buy mascara and foundation things I like go
- 3:14through that I use all the time. But like eyeshadow and stuff I
- 3:16never buy because I still have so much.
- 3:19And I think that's kind of where we're headed now anyways,
- 3:22especially with cost of living and just just we're in a
- 3:26different time period than the mid twenty 10s.
- 3:28So it is kind of interesting that overconsumption and
- 3:32collections and halls and all of that got really popular on
- 3:35TikTok for a little while. It's not to say that they're not
- 3:39still really popular because they absolutely are.
- 3:41But I do think that this trend, this underconsumption trend is
- 3:45showing that tides are shifting and it's such a positive trend.
- 3:49Like watching these videos, it's just like a warm fuzzy feeling
- 3:52inside. You're like, Oh my God, that is
- 3:54what my shower looks like. Or, Oh my, that is, you know
- 3:57what my pantry looks like, what my kitchen looks like.
- 4:01All of this stuff, it's so nice to see, just like normal life.
- 4:05But Crystal's article also has a very interesting angle, and I'll
- 4:09obviously link it down below. But it explores how this trend
- 4:12could be a gateway to a person's deeper interest in things like
- 4:16sustainability and economic justice.
- 4:20It's not single handedly going to lead people down that path, I
- 4:24don't think. And she kind of came to that
- 4:26conclusion as well, but it could open the door for that.
- 4:29But in general, I think this is just kind of like a feel good
- 4:32trend. And I was actually going to talk
- 4:34about how I think brands can jump on it.
- 4:37But I think that's like the complete antithesis of the
- 4:40trend. So maybe that is like something
- 4:43for you guys. I know a lot of marketing
- 4:45managers listen to the pod for you guys to take with you.
- 4:49This trend is popping off. If there is a way to
- 4:51organically, you know, put it into the brand that would make
- 4:55sense, go for it. But I don't think I'm going to,
- 4:57like necessarily encourage that because I do think that's kind
- 4:59of the opposite of the trend. OK.
- 5:02And the next story that I have for you guys is that Mister
- 5:06Beast has been exposed by an alleged former employee.
- 5:11Literally just yesterday, I said people are starting to turn on
- 5:15Mr. Beast and, like, speculate that Mister Beast has a downfall
- 5:19coming. And I didn't even know that it
- 5:21was basically already happening. So I spoke about that in
- 5:25reaction to Rosanna Pansino's Tik Toks, where she's been kind
- 5:29of exposing what it's like behind the scenes of Beast
- 5:32games, I think is what they're currently filming.
- 5:34And she's getting a lot of messages and stuff because she
- 5:36spoke out last year about how like what her experience was
- 5:40being on one Mr. Beast competition show.
- 5:42So she's been getting a lot of messages and stuff from people
- 5:44who are currently competing. However, this is not related to
- 5:48that, but it's kind of like all coming to a head together.
- 5:50So this YouTube creator last week, he goes by Dog Pack 404.
- 5:53I I've heard like some videos I was watching about it like
- 5:57Philip Defranco's video and stuff said that his name was
- 5:59Dawson. I don't know if that's his first
- 6:00or his last name, but he started a YouTube channel and he posted
- 6:05like his first video was a 53 minute video where he talks
- 6:09about how he worked for Mr. Beast and he thinks he's a
- 6:12fraud. And the video has over 6,000,000
- 6:16views, like, it has just exploded.
- 6:20So I wanted to talk about some of the kind of main points that
- 6:23he brought up. And there was a lot, as you can
- 6:26imagine. So I can't go through
- 6:27everything. But the number one thing he says
- 6:30is Mr. Beast really manipulates children's minds for profit.
- 6:34And he claims that he does this in three ways.
- 6:37So he said step one is getting the viewer to associate the
- 6:40brand with trust and authority. He says, quote, Mr. Beast videos
- 6:44are real and he's a great guy that gives away big rewards to
- 6:47his loyal followers. As in, like, that's what they
- 6:49want you to think, right? They want you to believe that
- 6:51Mister Beast's videos are real. He's this great guy.
- 6:54I mean, we've talked about that so much on this channel, like
- 6:56the public image of Mr. Beast and how that's so much more
- 7:00important than what he's actually doing on his channel.
- 7:03So step two, he says, is showing people that when they interact
- 7:07with Mr. Beast in the way that he tells them to, they are
- 7:11rewarded. And he says step three is
- 7:14calling on the viewer to act in a certain way that benefits Mr.
- 7:17Beast with big rewards. And he kind of debunks some of
- 7:23this by saying that you know, you won't win some of his
- 7:27competition shows and the things that he puts on his channel
- 7:30unless your friends or family with Mr. Beast, he claims that a
- 7:33lot of the random subscribers or like random people, quote UN
- 7:36quote that he gets to compete in his videos are actually his
- 7:39staff friends or family or the friends and family of his staff.
- 7:45So that was kind of the one big claim that he also said in there
- 7:48that some of his videos are like sensationalized and they use CGI
- 7:52and stuff, which I don't think that necessarily matters.
- 7:54Like a Mr. Beast is making entertaining content for a young
- 7:59audience. I think that's to be expected
- 8:02that some of the stuff he shows is not completely real.
- 8:05And then the other major thing he talks about is that Mister
- 8:09Beast is running illegal lotteries and framing them as
- 8:12giveaways. And the target of these
- 8:14lotteries are children because that is the majority of who
- 8:18watches Mr. Beast. So an example of like how
- 8:21they're turning giveaways quote, UN quote into illegal lotteries
- 8:25is, you know, he gives examples of times when people have had to
- 8:28spend lots of money, like $45 or whatever to like enter a
- 8:31giveaway. So that's kind of like gambling.
- 8:34So Mr. Beast personally has not addressed these claims.
- 8:38I mean, it's just been it's been quite a few weeks for Mr. Beast.
- 8:42He has not addressed this video, but it is gaining so much
- 8:45traction and all these huge Youtubers are reacting to it and
- 8:48stuff like that. But Chucky, who works on Mr.
- 8:51Beast's team, he actually addressed some of these claims
- 8:54on Twitter. So he wrote I want to quickly
- 8:56debunk some of the info in this video since the guy who made it
- 8:59was on my team. I suppose he was his manager.
- 9:02It was my decision to fire him for erratic behavior.
- 9:05He worked at the company for less than a month and wasn't an
- 9:07employee for most of the videos he mentions to have knowledge
- 9:10on. There's so much in this video
- 9:11and I want to specifically address him saying our videos
- 9:14are fake or staged because this is not true and I was on set for
- 9:17many of these videos. He acts like he's exposing us
- 9:20for using CGI to make backgrounds look cool when we
- 9:23have done multiple public behind the scenes videos with skopsky
- 9:28scripts ski. So I have literally no idea what
- 9:32that word is. I don't know if this is like a
- 9:34YouTube So Crispy. Oh my God, so crispy.
- 9:36Am I OK with So Crispy showing this?
- 9:40It's clearly not a secret. On top of that, we did drive
- 9:42buses in that pitch and same with the train that you claim we
- 9:45didn't. I mean, that's kind of what I
- 9:47was saying, right? I don't think it's like that
- 9:49crazy that they might be using CGI or creating kind of fake
- 9:54sets and scenarios and stuff for his videos.
- 9:56So in relation to the statement that the YouTube said, he said
- 10:00you won't get in a video unless you're friends or family with
- 10:02someone that works at Beast. So he says in response to that.
- 10:06This is a wild statement that can easily be proven wrong.
- 10:09There's probably hundreds or thousands of people who have no
- 10:12affiliation to friends slash family of Beast employees.
- 10:16Think the 456 people in Squid Game ages one to 100 etcetera.
- 10:20Jimmy doesn't know more than like a dozen people lol.
- 10:24So there was more to that. But I think the major thing that
- 10:27people are taking away from that Twitter thread is that he didn't
- 10:29actually acknowledge the lottery thing.
- 10:32And Mr. Beast would not be the first YouTube who has a younger
- 10:37demographic where he is kind of promoting, indirectly promoting
- 10:41gambling to them. This happened with the Paul
- 10:43brothers. I just like a lot of those guys,
- 10:47they've, I don't know if it's been by accident or they are,
- 10:51they know what they're selling to them or promoting to them and
- 10:53they don't care whatever it is. But there's been a few Youtubers
- 10:56like that that have gotten in trouble for that.
- 10:58I think the difference with Mr. Beast is that he is promoting
- 11:00like his own services, like his own lotteries, as opposed to
- 11:05promoting like gambling websites or, you know, external
- 11:10affiliations and companies and partners that don't actually
- 11:13have anything to do with the Youtubers.
- 11:15So I don't know, I highly recommend watching the video.
- 11:18It is quite a bombshell. But yes I I am interested to see
- 11:22how this keeps going. I think there is just like a
- 11:24massive pile on right now with Mr. Beast and once I mean we've
- 11:28seen this a million times once it starts it's really hard for
- 11:32it to stop. If the YouTube does not come out
- 11:35and make a statement I feel like it is going to keep snowballing
- 11:40unless he nips this in the bud, but I feel like his tactic might
- 11:43be just to ignore it. We will see.
- 11:46Anyways guys that's it for mini scroll today.
- 11:49Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 11:51Please rate review and subscribe it helps me so much it helps me
- 11:54grow. I love you guys and I will talk
- 11:57to you tomorrow. OK, bye.
