- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm Ken
- 0:04Speaker 1: Rosenthal and welcome back to Alana Rizzo, Alano. We missed you.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Good to have you back and we have a good
- 0:11Speaker 1: deal to talk about, even though it's still mid to
- 0:14Speaker 1: late November.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Ken, great to be with you. Has always went
- 0:17Speaker 2: to Africa trip of a lifetime. I highly recommend it.
- 0:21Speaker 2: But let's get to baseball. That's what the show is
- 0:23Speaker 2: about and the Atlanta Braves. Ken Rosenthal making some moves.
- 0:27Speaker 2: One that was interesting because it could have been dealt
- 0:30Speaker 2: looks like he's there to stay, typical.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Of Alexanthopolis, the Braves president of baseball operations. He struck
- 0:36Speaker 1: quickly two moves last night. The first was a trade
- 0:40Speaker 1: for Mauricio Dubon, who can be in their shortstop mix.
- 0:43Speaker 1: We'll get into that. And the second move, or maybe
- 0:46Speaker 1: it was the first, I can't remember the sequence, but
- 0:49Speaker 1: the signing of Racial Iglesias. The resigning of Racio Iglesias
- 0:53Speaker 1: to a one year, sixteen million dollar contract that is
- 0:56Speaker 1: about the same actually it's exactly the same as he
- 0:59Speaker 1: made in the previous two seasons with the Braves. And
- 1:02Speaker 1: it's an interesting move because if you recall back. At
- 1:05Speaker 1: the deadline, the Braves made some trades, and they could
- 1:08Speaker 1: have traded Aglesias. He was certainly available or at least
- 1:11Speaker 1: a guy that people wanted, and yet they chose to
- 1:15Speaker 1: keep him. And Alexanthopolis addressed this last night with reporters,
- 1:19Speaker 1: and I've often talked about this about how when you
- 1:21Speaker 1: trade a potential free agent, you're kind of severing the relationship,
- 1:27Speaker 1: so to revive it and bring him back. It happens
- 1:30Speaker 1: once in a while. Chapman did it with the Yankees
- 1:32Speaker 1: at one point, but it's pretty rare. So here's the
- 1:35Speaker 1: quote from Anthopolis on that very idea. He said, we
- 1:40Speaker 1: always had intentions to bring Glacias back. I think staying
- 1:44Speaker 1: with the same team makes it easier for that to happen.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Sometimes when you cut the cord and people move on
- 1:51Speaker 1: to other places, there's hard feelings. And perhaps this helped
- 1:55Speaker 1: the Braves with their courtship or recourtship of Iglesias and
- 1:59Speaker 1: bring him back, because here is a guy that they kept.
- 2:03Speaker 1: He had a rough start to his season last year.
- 2:05Speaker 1: If you remember first twenty five appearances six point seven
- 2:08Speaker 1: five era last forty five, he had a career high
- 2:12Speaker 1: seventy appearances last forty five one point twenty five VRA
- 2:16Speaker 1: So he is still a really good closer and is
- 2:19Speaker 1: someone obviously that the Braves wanted to target early, did
- 2:23Speaker 1: target early and got done. Yeah right.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Telli Glacias is one of the closers. Can It's an
- 2:29Speaker 2: interesting closer market, is it not. I almost feel like
- 2:32Speaker 2: this year, as far as the closers are concerned, very
- 2:35Speaker 2: reminiscent to what it was like about two or three
- 2:37Speaker 2: years when it was the shortstop bonanza. Is that fair
- 2:40Speaker 2: to say?
- 2:41Speaker 1: It is fair to say a lot. It's a really
- 2:43Speaker 1: good point. Actually, when you look at the closers who
- 2:46Speaker 1: are available, I Meangleciers was just one of them. There
- 2:49Speaker 1: are any number of interesting names out there now. Edwin
- 2:52Speaker 1: Diaz obviously is the biggest of those. I would put
- 2:55Speaker 1: Suarez and Devin Williams in the tier right below Ryan Hellsley.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Despite having some troubles with the Mets three bad weeks,
- 3:03Speaker 1: was tipping and had some other issues. He is very
- 3:06Speaker 1: much in demand because teams love his stuff. Emilio Pangan
- 3:10Speaker 1: successful season for the Reds. Luke Weaver can certainly close.
- 3:13Speaker 1: He is a free agent, and ken Lee Jansen back
- 3:16Speaker 1: for more. So sure, there are plenty of options available.
- 3:19Speaker 1: There are plenty of teams that need closers, and it's
- 3:23Speaker 1: going to be interesting to see how this all plays
- 3:25Speaker 1: out with that group, and he could happen sooner rather
- 3:28Speaker 1: than later. I'm not saying necessarily today, tomorrow, this weekend,
- 3:32Speaker 1: but before the winter meetings, I would expect one or
- 3:35Speaker 1: two of those guys, if not more, to come off
- 3:37Speaker 1: the board.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I'm ken Devin Williams and the Yankees apparently discussing a
- 3:41Speaker 2: possible reunion. There's a lot of places besides the Bronx
- 3:45Speaker 2: that Devin Williams would be a good fit. In your estimation,
- 3:48Speaker 2: what's the likelihood he goes back to the Bronx.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Probably not likely, but it's interesting that the Yankees still
- 3:55Speaker 1: want him and he had his rocky moments with the Yankees.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Will Salmon of the Athletic Rule a really interesting story
- 4:01Speaker 1: last week about his season and breaking down just where
- 4:05Speaker 1: it went wrong in certain places. Overall, it's still a
- 4:09Speaker 1: pretty good year for Devin Williams. He's still a guy
- 4:11Speaker 1: who will get you a ton a ton of swing
- 4:14Speaker 1: and miss. So for the Yankees to contact him and
- 4:18Speaker 1: get back in touch, that is notable. Will he end
- 4:21Speaker 1: up there? I don't know. It's going to be really
- 4:23Speaker 1: interesting to see how this all, as I said, shakes out.
- 4:27Speaker 1: He is someone that the Mets, like, the Dodgers, like
- 4:29Speaker 1: a number of teams have identified as a potential target.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Mauricio Dubon interesting with the Houston Astros, Ken, this is
- 4:38Speaker 2: a guy that was a really good utility player. Obviously
- 4:41Speaker 2: he's tremendous defensively. The Houston Astros have elected to send
- 4:45Speaker 2: him to Atlanta. What do you make of that deal?
- 4:48Speaker 1: Well, it's Chandler rome of Astro's territory, if that's what
- 4:51Speaker 1: it's called or whatever. That okay, And he wrote and
- 4:57Speaker 1: reported last night this was a cost cutting move. Duban
- 5:01Speaker 1: is projected to make about five to eight in arbitration
- 5:04Speaker 1: five point eight million. The player that the Astros got back,
- 5:07Speaker 1: Nick Allen, is around a million. So the Astros are,
- 5:10Speaker 1: as Chandler reports here, wanting to stay under the luxury
- 5:14Speaker 1: tax this winner, but they intend to add at least
- 5:16Speaker 1: one starter and perhaps a left handed hitter. So doing
- 5:20Speaker 1: both of those things requires payroll shuffling, as Chandler said,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and here is Duban being the latest example of that.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I like Dubon as a player. He's a two time
- 5:30Speaker 1: utility Goal Glove winner and also he is known as
- 5:33Speaker 1: a great teammate. He was part of the glue in
- 5:36Speaker 1: that clubhouse in Houston. He'll will serve I would expect
- 5:39Speaker 1: the same role in Atlanta. Will he be their shortstop?
- 5:43Speaker 1: That's the big question. Now. I mentioned Alex Anthopolis likes
- 5:46Speaker 1: to strike early. The guy he wants is Hashan Kim.
- 5:51Speaker 1: He took him from Tampa Bay for the final month,
- 5:53Speaker 1: tried to get acquainted with him. But of course free
- 5:56Speaker 1: agency is free agency, and Kim and his agent, Scott
- 5:59Speaker 1: Boris are going to go with their own pace, explore
- 6:02Speaker 1: the market and not necessarily sign with any team quickly.
- 6:06Speaker 1: But at least now, what Anthopolis has done is raise
- 6:09Speaker 1: the floor at that position. They have someone who can
- 6:12Speaker 1: play shortstop. They've got Vidal Bruhan as well, and Brett
- 6:15Speaker 1: Wisely they can fill in. So if they do not
- 6:18Speaker 1: end up with Kim, well, okay, they'll be in at
- 6:22Speaker 1: least a decent position. And the problem in shortstop right
- 6:25Speaker 1: now is the shortage of quality players available. Most teams
- 6:28Speaker 1: do not view Bobashett as a shortstop anymore. They believe
- 6:31Speaker 1: he belongs at second or third base, and then the
- 6:35Speaker 1: question becomes, okay, can you live with less? And as
- 6:39Speaker 1: I wrote today in our notes column with Will Salmon,
- 6:42Speaker 1: five playoff teams from last year the Seattle Mariners, the Yankees, Milwaukee, Cleveland,
- 6:46Speaker 1: and Detroit. They were in the bottom ten in the
- 6:50Speaker 1: sport in f WOUR and they made the playoffs. And
- 6:53Speaker 1: the Toronto Blue Jays had Andres Jimenez for the last
- 6:56Speaker 1: month and into the playoffs when Bobaschet got hurt. Now
- 6:59Speaker 1: him and it has had a great alcs but before
- 7:02Speaker 1: that he was one of the worst offensive players in
- 7:04Speaker 1: the league. So if you have someone who can catch
- 7:07Speaker 1: the ball and give you adequate performance defensively, you can
- 7:10Speaker 1: still make the playoffs. The Braves have enough guys who
- 7:13Speaker 1: should have comeback seasons to be a really good team again,
- 7:17Speaker 1: but they've still got work to do. One more starter
- 7:19Speaker 1: bullpen help as well.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't have to be an amazing a team
- 7:23Speaker 2: with an amazing shortstop anymore to win the World Series,
- 7:26Speaker 2: which is very different, or at least go to the postseason. Rather,
- 7:29Speaker 2: it would be very different than it was just a
- 7:30Speaker 2: few years back. All Right, you can catch everything you
- 7:33Speaker 2: need to know about the Braves as well as the
- 7:35Speaker 2: Houston Astros. The Foul Territory Network, it never stops. Hammer
- 7:38Speaker 2: Territory hosts Sean Coleman and Steven Tolder put out two
- 7:42Speaker 2: emergency shows last night. They were freaking out Ken. Check
- 7:44Speaker 2: them out on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And on the astro side, Chandler Rome and Tyler Stafford
- 7:49Speaker 2: all over it on Crush City Territory. Subscribe on YouTube
- 7:52Speaker 2: and rate the podcast five stars. Of course part of
- 7:56Speaker 2: the Foul Territory Network. Let's talk a little bit, Ken
- 7:59Speaker 2: Rosent about the Angels and the Orioles. I remember when
- 8:03Speaker 2: Grayson Rodriguez was coming up, the hype that was associated
- 8:07Speaker 2: with him. Well, he is now an angel. The Los
- 8:09Speaker 2: Angeles Angels acquire Grayson Rodriguez. He's actually coming on FT
- 8:12Speaker 2: on Friday, by the way, in exchange for a good
- 8:15Speaker 2: player in Taylor Ward. What do you make of this?
- 8:18Speaker 1: It's a fascinating trade of Lona and a stunner too.
- 8:23Speaker 1: A lot of people are critical of the Orioles for this,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and understandably so. It's four years of Grayson Rodriguez for
- 8:30Speaker 1: one year of Taylor Ward. A couple of things to
- 8:33Speaker 1: keep in mind, and I wrote all about this today
- 8:35Speaker 1: in my Notes Calm. The Orioles badly needed a right
- 8:38Speaker 1: handed hitting outfielder. There are very few available. It was
- 8:41Speaker 1: really Taylor Ward, Joe Adell, maybe a few others, but
- 8:45Speaker 1: no one of that great magnitude. So they obviously were
- 8:50Speaker 1: willing to pay a high price for a guy who
- 8:53Speaker 1: is entering his walk gear. That is something that you
- 8:57Speaker 1: don't see very often, trading a controllable picture for rental hitter.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Grayson Rodriguez is an extremely talented pitcher and was one
- 9:05Speaker 1: of the game's top prospects, as you mentioned when he
- 9:07Speaker 1: came into the league. The problem has been he's been hurt,
- 9:11Speaker 1: hasn't pitched in any game at all since July thirty first,
- 9:15Speaker 1: twenty twenty four. As I wrote, there was some frustration
- 9:18Speaker 1: on his part, some frustration on the Orioles part, and
- 9:21Speaker 1: perhaps it was just best for a change of scenery.
- 9:24Speaker 1: We will see how this all plays out. If, as
- 9:28Speaker 1: it appears, the Orioles suspect Grayson Rodriguez is not going
- 9:31Speaker 1: to be healthy anytime soon, or maybe not healthy ever,
- 9:34Speaker 1: then obviously it's a trade that will work for them.
- 9:37Speaker 1: If Grayson Rodriguez, even while having a restricted workload in
- 9:41Speaker 1: twenty twenty six, assuming he's healthy, eventually becomes the pitcher
- 9:45Speaker 1: that the Orioles envision, the picture that he flashed at
- 9:48Speaker 1: times in his Baltimore tenure. Well, then you're talking about
- 9:53Speaker 1: an absolute steal. The Orioles are one of the most
- 9:56Speaker 1: fascinating teams right now. As I quoted an Ale execut
- 10:00Speaker 1: in this column today, they are a team that is
- 10:03Speaker 1: going for it, and Michaelias very aggressive as their president
- 10:07Speaker 1: of baseball operations. He wants to do some things. Perhaps
- 10:11Speaker 1: he is concerned for his job security. Perhaps he's just
- 10:14Speaker 1: frustrated that after back to back appearances in the playoffs
- 10:18Speaker 1: last year, they finished in last place or this season.
- 10:21Speaker 1: So they're going to be a team to watch. And
- 10:23Speaker 1: as I reported in this story as well, even after
- 10:27Speaker 1: getting Taylorward, and even though they have Tyler O'Neal and
- 10:31Speaker 1: Colton Kowser and they've signed with the Odie Taveries, they're
- 10:33Speaker 1: still looking for outfield help. Perhaps it will be in
- 10:36Speaker 1: center field, and they're still in the mix at least
- 10:40Speaker 1: for Kyle Tucker. Now, if you get Kyle Tucker, you
- 10:42Speaker 1: make some trades and you figure it out and you
- 10:44Speaker 1: don't worry about any potential surplus. You just do it.
- 10:48Speaker 1: But he was a guy that was drafted by Mike Elias.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Executives often have attachments to players that they draft. I
- 10:55Speaker 1: don't expect the Oriols are going to get Tucker. They
- 10:58Speaker 1: need pitching. We all know that they need a big
- 11:01Speaker 1: time starter to go with Bradish and Trevor Rodgers, and
- 11:04Speaker 1: they also need a closer and additional bullpen help even
- 11:08Speaker 1: after trading for Kittridge. So I don't expect them to
- 11:12Speaker 1: be there, but the fact that they're not ruling it
- 11:14Speaker 1: out is interesting to me.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Ken When you talk about Kyle Tucker, he's likely going
- 11:18Speaker 2: to come with a very hefty price tag. You said
- 11:21Speaker 2: that the Orioles need starting pitching. Would Michael Lias, that
- 11:25Speaker 2: front office and that ownership group give Kyle Tucker the
- 11:28Speaker 2: type of money that he's demanding. Are they prone to
- 11:31Speaker 2: do those types of things?
- 11:32Speaker 1: They're not prone, Alana, And that's a great point. However,
- 11:36Speaker 1: their owner, David Rubinstein has said the money is available,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and now I didn't say it was available for Tucker
- 11:41Speaker 1: per se. He just said they have money to spend.
- 11:44Speaker 1: It would be out of character for Elias. It would
- 11:46Speaker 1: be out of character for the Orioles. But we have
- 11:49Speaker 1: seen with San Diego, a team from a smaller market
- 11:53Speaker 1: make statements like this. Now it's worked for San Diego
- 11:57Speaker 1: to a very real degree. They haven't won a World Series,
- 11:59Speaker 1: I know, but they've electrified the market. They've been in
- 12:02Speaker 1: the playoffs, they've been really good. Are the Orioles thinking
- 12:06Speaker 1: the same way? I would be surprised because the revenues
- 12:10Speaker 1: are down like San Diegos are, and they're later on
- 12:13Speaker 1: Peter Sideler basically said, I'm doing this even though our
- 12:15Speaker 1: revenues don't support it. I don't expect the Oriols to
- 12:19Speaker 1: be at that level, but I do expect them to
- 12:21Speaker 1: spend this offseason. And remember last winter Corbyn burns, they
- 12:25Speaker 1: made him an offer one hundred and eighty million for
- 12:28Speaker 1: four years. Now, Tucker's probably going to cost twice that.
- 12:32Speaker 1: But they have shown that they are willing to do
- 12:34Speaker 1: something big. So even if they don't do Tucker, can
- 12:38Speaker 1: they get fromer Valdez for whatever it's going to be
- 12:41Speaker 1: one sixty one seventy or Dylan Cees or Suarez one
- 12:45Speaker 1: of those guys. Yeah, I think that's possible.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Hm interesting to see. This might be go harder go
- 12:50Speaker 2: home for Michael Layas a lot of folks think perhaps
- 12:53Speaker 2: he might be on the hot seat depending upon what
- 12:55Speaker 2: the Orioles do in the twenty twenty six season. Much
- 12:59Speaker 2: more to come on Fair to Territory with Ken Rosenthal
- 13:02Speaker 2: on this Thursday. Get those questions in for Grill and Ken.
- 13:05Speaker 2: We'll be right back after.

- 13:11Speaker 3: covered from head to toe.

- 14:03Speaker 3: code foul for up to fifty percent off.
- 14:13Speaker 2: All right, welcome back to fair territory. Time to get
- 14:15Speaker 2: these questions in for Ken Rosenthal. The first one is
- 14:18Speaker 2: in regards to left handed hitting Ken Ryan Sprouse seventy
- 14:21Speaker 2: four to fourteen. What impact does the glut of left
- 14:24Speaker 2: handed hitting outfielders have on the trade market for Alec
- 14:27Speaker 2: Thomas and Jake McCarthy.
- 14:29Speaker 1: It doesn't make it more difficult for the Diamondbacks, at
- 14:32Speaker 1: least early on maybe to move one of those guys.
- 14:34Speaker 1: And it's going to be really something to follow here
- 14:38Speaker 1: what the Diamondbacks do in centerfield. Those two players, Jake
- 14:41Speaker 1: McCarthy and Alec Thomas are players who can obviously play
- 14:44Speaker 1: centerfield and have played center field for the Diamondbacks. But
- 14:48Speaker 1: the Diamondbacks do have something of a duplication and a
- 14:51Speaker 1: surplus in the outfield. And most interestingly, they're playing Jordan
- 14:55Speaker 1: Lawler in center in winter ball, or at least he
- 14:59Speaker 1: had been playing center in winter ball, So if he
- 15:02Speaker 1: is going to be the guy they commit to, and
- 15:03Speaker 1: they do want to get Jordan Lawler established as a Diamondback,
- 15:07Speaker 1: He's not going to be the shortstop. With Perdomo there,
- 15:09Speaker 1: then maybe it becomes more likely they are willing to
- 15:13Speaker 1: move one of those guys. They are willing, there's no
- 15:15Speaker 1: question about that. The question becomes timing and do they
- 15:19Speaker 1: need to wait for the free agent dust to settle
- 15:22Speaker 1: with some of the left handed hitting outfielders that are
- 15:24Speaker 1: out there. I don't know that Jake maccarthur or Alec
- 15:26Speaker 1: Thomas interferes with Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker. They're not
- 15:32Speaker 1: the same level of player, but maybe those teams that
- 15:36Speaker 1: miss out on those guys would be more likely to
- 15:38Speaker 1: take one of them. It would be a huge step
- 15:40Speaker 1: down for either if indeed they miss out on a
- 15:43Speaker 1: Bellinger or a Tucker.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, And the only person that's solidified in
- 15:48Speaker 2: that Diamondbacks outfield is Cordin Carroll. Mike G fifteen has
- 15:51Speaker 2: this question for you, Ken Rosenthal Cubs deed pitching, but
- 15:54Speaker 2: Hoyer did say they need to also improve against lefties.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Any whispers of them targeting a player like Rober Snyder
- 16:00Speaker 2: to platoon and right field with Casey Yeah, keeping a
- 16:07Speaker 2: say a Suzuki as the DH.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Actually, that's a really good thought. And because the Cubs
- 16:14Speaker 1: are breaking in Casey and it's a guy that is
- 16:17Speaker 1: not established yet, you can certainly see a Ref Snyder
- 16:20Speaker 1: appealing to them. Ref Sneider crushes lefties. We know that.
- 16:23Speaker 1: And as I mentioned earlier on the availability of right
- 16:28Speaker 1: handed hitting outfielders is not great. Ref Steiner is actually
- 16:32Speaker 1: one of the better ones available. And he's not really
- 16:34Speaker 1: a regular player. He's a platoon player. So yes, I
- 16:37Speaker 1: can definitely see that particular thing kind of happening with
- 16:41Speaker 1: the Cubs. I can see them being interested in Ref
- 16:44Speaker 1: Schneider in exactly the scenario that you just mentioned.
- 16:48Speaker 2: I love this next question just because I get to say,
- 16:51Speaker 2: Lars Newtbar, how fun is that name? For a hot second,
- 16:54Speaker 2: Lars Neutbar, it's in regards to him, Ken if you
- 16:57Speaker 2: want to bring this up, Pudge Richardson says large, Lars
- 17:00Speaker 2: Nubar seemed to have trade interest prior to his recent surgeries.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Is the interest still there? What are you hear? And
- 17:05Speaker 2: would Saint Louis be better off just keeping him?
- 17:08Speaker 1: Saint Louis is open for business, and they're going to
- 17:11Speaker 1: talk about Sonny Gray. They're going to talk about Arnatto.
- 17:14Speaker 1: They want to move those guys. They also have a
- 17:17Speaker 1: glut of left handed hitting options, and Nutbar is one
- 17:21Speaker 1: of them. Brendan Donovan is another. They have some others
- 17:24Speaker 1: as well. Newbar's value is down a bit because of
- 17:28Speaker 1: the injuries and the surgeries and all of that. I
- 17:32Speaker 1: don't know that it's the right time to move him.
- 17:35Speaker 1: But with Heim Bloom now running the Cardinals, they're gonna
- 17:38Speaker 1: listen on everything. They're going to be in on everything
- 17:41Speaker 1: as far as players that teams have interest in. So
- 17:45Speaker 1: I don't know what to expect exactly, but I do
- 17:47Speaker 1: expect them, whether it's Gorman or Nutbar, Donovan someone else,
- 17:51Speaker 1: I do expect them to trade at least one of
- 17:53Speaker 1: their left handed hittings hitters.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Okay, next question regarding the Texas Rangers, specifically Ken Rosenthal
- 18:00Speaker 2: Josh Young. Let's see, I think this might be our
- 18:03Speaker 2: last question. Ricky Shaef fifty seven to fifty eight has
- 18:05Speaker 2: this to say, Hey, can there is talk that Young
- 18:08Speaker 2: from Texas is definitely available, perfect fit for Milwaukee. What
- 18:11Speaker 2: say you?
- 18:14Speaker 1: I like the idea and I am a Josh Young fan.
- 18:17Speaker 1: When he was first coming into the league, he made
- 18:20Speaker 1: a huge impact and then for whatever reason, it has
- 18:23Speaker 1: not continued there. And I don't know what the problem
- 18:27Speaker 1: is there in Texas with Young and why they seem
- 18:30Speaker 1: to have soured on him a little bit and why
- 18:32Speaker 1: he's gone backwards, And it seems to me we talked
- 18:35Speaker 1: about Grayson Rodriguez as a change of scenery, guy Josh
- 18:38Speaker 1: Young might be the same type. And yes, for Milwaukee
- 18:41Speaker 1: relatively low salary, it would be an the kind of
- 18:45Speaker 1: addition that they probably should be looking at.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Yes, Yeah, and with Brandon Woodruff coming back, even less
- 18:50Speaker 2: to spend on other players. Ken Rosenthal, all right, thanks
- 18:53Speaker 2: for the questions you guys, We appreciate it very much.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Coming up, Ken and I are going to discuss our
- 18:57Speaker 2: dude and Dork of the Week after these messages from
- 19:00Speaker 2: foul Hey.

- 19:43Speaker 2: Dude, dude, dude, all right? Time now for dude and
- 19:53Speaker 2: dork of the week. Can you have honors on your dude?
- 19:57Speaker 1: All right? It's Josh Naylor and it's also the Mariners,
- 20:01Speaker 1: both of them for coming together on a deal that
- 20:03Speaker 1: made all the sense in the world once the season ended.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Even before that, as much of an impact as he
- 20:09Speaker 1: had on that team, free agency in baseball tends to drag.
- 20:13Speaker 1: We know that. And yet when you have a player
- 20:16Speaker 1: and a team that want to continue their relationship, it
- 20:21Speaker 1: should happen. It should happen quickly, and it happened quickly
- 20:24Speaker 1: with these two parties, Nayler signing a five year, ninety
- 20:28Speaker 1: two and a half million dollar deal with the Mariners,
- 20:30Speaker 1: a deal that most people considered fair for both sides.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It's eighteen and a half million free each year for
- 20:37Speaker 1: a guy who is still only twenty nine. That's where
- 20:39Speaker 1: the five years comes in. So good for the Mariners,
- 20:42Speaker 1: good for Naylor. They both decided they wanted to continue
- 20:46Speaker 1: being together and they got it done quickly.
- 20:48Speaker 2: And also, Ken, and tell me if I'm wrong on this.
- 20:51Speaker 2: I mean, Seattle's not the easiest place in the world
- 20:54Speaker 2: to hit, so Naylor could have gone other places. So
- 20:57Speaker 2: for a position player to want to be someplace in
- 21:00Speaker 2: a park that doesn't necessarily lend itself to position players,
- 21:05Speaker 2: that says something too about the atmosphere and how good
- 21:07Speaker 2: he felt there.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Yes, and the president of baseball operations in Seattle, Jerry Depoto,
- 21:11Speaker 1: said one of the things that struck him about Naylor
- 21:13Speaker 1: right away when they acquired him in that trade from
- 21:16Speaker 1: Arizona was Naylor's saying, I'm not worried about the ballpark.
- 21:19Speaker 1: I like hitting here, So he was not afraid. He
- 21:22Speaker 1: obviously succeeded there. This is a guy We've talked about
- 21:25Speaker 1: him a lot. He has a lot of savvy for
- 21:28Speaker 1: a player. He has great instincts on the field, and
- 21:31Speaker 1: he is also someone who plays with a certain edge
- 21:34Speaker 1: and brings that to his team. He's not the most
- 21:38Speaker 1: garrulous guy with the media, but in the clubhouse, very
- 21:41Speaker 1: much respected and in some ways beloved.
- 21:45Speaker 2: You know who else is very much respected and beloved
- 21:48Speaker 2: in that Mariner's clubhouse, Ken Rosetal, Well, I'm going to
- 21:50Speaker 2: tell you because my dude of the week is not
- 21:53Speaker 2: a biped, it's a quadruped, and that's Tucker, the Mariner's dog.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Josh Naylor said that one of the reasons that he
- 22:00Speaker 2: signed with the Seattle Mariners for that extension was not
- 22:03Speaker 2: only because of the amount of love that he felt,
- 22:05Speaker 2: but because of Tucker. Tucker rolls that clubhouse. Ken Rosenthal,
- 22:09Speaker 2: you know that better than anybody. And I'm telling you what.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Tucker was a big reason that Naylor is in Seattle
- 22:15Speaker 2: at least for the next five years. He's such a
- 22:17Speaker 2: good boy.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Good choice. Alta, I like it. Yes, I have seen
- 22:22Speaker 1: Tucker rolling the clubhouse. It is quite a sight.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Yeah, anytime there's a dog involved, I am in. All right,
- 22:28Speaker 2: it is time now for the dork of the week.
- 22:39Speaker 2: All right, Ken, who do you have this week?
- 22:41Speaker 1: All Right, I'm gonna ruffle some feathers here, perhaps Alana,
- 22:45Speaker 1: but I'm going with all the people who are complaining
- 22:49Speaker 1: about East Coast bias helping determine the American League MVP vote. No,
- 22:54Speaker 1: that is not what happened here. I've talked about this before.
- 22:58Speaker 1: And when voters vote now, they have plenty of information,
- 23:03Speaker 1: and they've seen cal Raley as much as they've seen
- 23:06Speaker 1: Aaron Judge. And if they haven't seen him as much,
- 23:08Speaker 1: they certainly have access to the information about what he
- 23:13Speaker 1: has done. And a lot was written about cal Raley
- 23:15Speaker 1: and what he has done. And if you saw, there
- 23:17Speaker 1: was a tweet from Greg John's retired Mariners baseball writer,
- 23:20Speaker 1: and he said bum that cal Raley didn't win al VMVP.
- 23:23Speaker 1: But this wasn't an East Coast bias thing. Of the
- 23:25Speaker 1: ten Al East voters five to five split between Raleigh
- 23:29Speaker 1: and Judge Al West. Also a five to five split
- 23:32Speaker 1: difference came from Ale Central voters seven to three for Judge. Hello,
- 23:36Speaker 1: there it is now. I will say this. Not every
- 23:39Speaker 1: voter lives in the same spot where he's voting, for instance,
- 23:43Speaker 1: or she I am in the Baltimore chapter. Still, that
- 23:47Speaker 1: is where I started, even though I have not lived
- 23:49Speaker 1: in Baltimore for quite some time. The reason for that
- 23:52Speaker 1: is there would not be enough voters in the Baltimore
- 23:54Speaker 1: chapter to choose from. So they kept me there. The
- 23:56Speaker 1: BBWAA did that said still, it's just not a bias thing.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Does Aaron Judge get more publicity than cal Rawley, No question.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Does it influence the people who are voting, No, it
- 24:08Speaker 1: does not stop it with that Dorks of the Week,
- 24:11Speaker 1: all of you.
- 24:16Speaker 2: That's great. I don't need anything else. I don't even
- 24:18Speaker 2: need to do it door of the Dorks of the Week,
- 24:21Speaker 2: all of you. You heard it from Ken Rosenthal talk
- 24:24Speaker 2: about that left handed reliever market. Ken Rosenthal, it feels
- 24:26Speaker 2: like it'll be at a premium.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Now.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Yankee struck an early signing with Ryan Yarborough. What do
- 24:31Speaker 2: you make of that and how do you see this
- 24:33Speaker 2: playing out in terms of the left handed bullpen arms.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Yarborough was a successful swingman for the Yankees last year,
- 24:40Speaker 1: if you remember, he started for a while before he
- 24:41Speaker 1: got hurt and did well. He is a guy that
- 24:44Speaker 1: is valuable to any staff, kind of like Eric Lauer
- 24:47Speaker 1: who replaced him in Toronto. So I don't necessarily consider
- 24:51Speaker 1: him part of the left handed relief market, but it
- 24:55Speaker 1: is going to be something to watch here because left
- 24:58Speaker 1: handed relievers are always in demand. Matt Gelbo of The
- 25:01Speaker 1: Athletic has reported that Matt Strom of the Phillies, a
- 25:05Speaker 1: quality left handed reliever, could be someone who is traded
- 25:08Speaker 1: in the weeks ahead. Now, we talked about the closers
- 25:11Speaker 1: in the first segment and how there's going to be
- 25:13Speaker 1: a lot of action on them. I believe all of
- 25:16Speaker 1: them are right handed, so we're talking mostly about setup types.
- 25:20Speaker 1: But yes, a lot. And these guys are always players
- 25:24Speaker 1: who do fairly well in free agency considering their specialists.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Okay, there was a somebody was talking about it in
- 25:31Speaker 2: terms of their white Whale interview. Ken was the Mannings
- 25:36Speaker 2: on the Manning cast, So Peyton and Eli Manning were
- 25:38Speaker 2: talking about it, and Eli's was basically every defensive back
- 25:41Speaker 2: that picked off Peyton or something that's who he wanted
- 25:44Speaker 2: on his on his white whale list. Do you, Ken Rosenthal,
- 25:49Speaker 2: who has had thousands and thousands of interviews, is there
- 25:53Speaker 2: somebody that you would love to have a conversation with.
- 25:57Speaker 1: In baseball? I don't know that there's anybody. I've talked
- 26:00Speaker 1: to pretty much everybody, and guys like Eddie Murray and
- 26:03Speaker 1: Albert Bell didn't talk. But because they didn't talk and
- 26:07Speaker 1: their careers are over. I'm not so interested in talking
- 26:10Speaker 1: to them anymore as I once was. But when you
- 26:13Speaker 1: look outside of baseball, I'm a big Bruce Springsteen fan,
- 26:17Speaker 1: as a lot of members of the BBWA R. It's
- 26:19Speaker 1: a running joke among the younger writers. Okay, but I've
- 26:23Speaker 1: always thought, do I really want to meet him? Do
- 26:25Speaker 1: you want to meet you a hero? Because sometimes it's
- 26:27Speaker 1: disappointing you always hear, oh, he's a great guy. Maybe
- 26:30Speaker 1: he is, but that would be someone I'd like to
- 26:33Speaker 1: ask a lot of questions to. I'm not sure i'd
- 26:36Speaker 1: want to do it necessarily in purpose, And maybe that
- 26:38Speaker 1: would be what I'd like to do on Zoom Yeah.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Or maybe you can just like go out to dinner
- 26:42Speaker 2: with them and just have it more of a you know,
- 26:44Speaker 2: a free casual Conversation's what's the one? If you only
- 26:47Speaker 2: had one question for the boss? What do you think
- 26:49Speaker 2: it would be?
- 26:54Speaker 1: Actually, I'm not sure. I don't know. I've got a lot.
- 27:00Speaker 1: One would be on the dynamic ticket pricing that he
- 27:02Speaker 1: went to two years ago upset a lot of people,
- 27:07Speaker 1: and the guy that's got a lot of money, and
- 27:09Speaker 1: what would be the logic for that? He didn't have
- 27:11Speaker 1: to do that. That would be one, and that's really
- 27:14Speaker 1: not been asked of him because he doesn't do many interviews,
- 27:18Speaker 1: so that would be one for sure.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Okay, mine is also outside of baseball, but it's with
- 27:23Speaker 2: an artist that also has a lot of baseball ties.
- 27:26Speaker 2: It is not Bruce Springsteen, but it is Morgan Wallen,
- 27:29Speaker 2: and the reason being is because not only am I
- 27:31Speaker 2: obsessed with his music and will follow him anywhere, even
- 27:35Speaker 2: though that's a little odd, I'm not the only one,
- 27:37Speaker 2: by the way, and yes, I will be in Gainesville
- 27:39Speaker 2: next year for that concert. He is a big, big
- 27:43Speaker 2: baseball fan. Ken he grew up playing baseball, blew out
- 27:46Speaker 2: his arm, was not able to play anymore. Pursued music.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Obviously it's worked out for him, but he has a
- 27:51Speaker 2: great song called the ninety eight Braves. John Smoltz is
- 27:53Speaker 2: actually in one of his videos for the ninety eight
- 27:55Speaker 2: Braves talking about losing to the San Diego Padres. He
- 27:58Speaker 2: has a lot of baseball references in his music and
- 28:02Speaker 2: I'm I just love his stuff. There's not a song
- 28:04Speaker 2: out there that Morgan Wallen sings that I don't enjoy.
- 28:07Speaker 2: So that would be my white Whale interview if anybody
- 28:10Speaker 2: out there would like to help me with Morgan Wallen
- 28:13Speaker 2: and help Ken with Bruce Springsteen. We'd appreciate that very much.
- 28:16Speaker 2: All right, that's gonna do it here for Fair Territory,
- 28:19Speaker 2: Don't forget. Foul Territory is next. Some really good guests
- 28:23Speaker 2: today on Foul Territory, of course, So who is it?
- 28:26Speaker 2: Todd Fraser, Aeric Kratz, Scott bron They're going to welcome
- 28:29Speaker 2: Trek Scooble, have you heard of him, Jake Berger of
- 28:31Speaker 2: course of the Rangers, and Robert Murray Dodger's Territory with
- 28:34Speaker 2: myself and Clint Passias. Follows that, we're gonna have Baseball
- 28:37Speaker 2: America's Josh Norris and he's going to join the show.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Ken, Great sounds, great good lineup today.
- 28:44Speaker 2: All right, guys, don't forget. Fair Territory returns Monday at
- 28:47Speaker 2: ten a m. Eastern with Ken Rosenthal. Have a great week, everybody,
