- 0:23Speaker 3: I mean like I was in nerd so I was
- 0:25Speaker 3: embarrassing to be in.
- 0:26Speaker 2: With because Evan on Catch twenty two, you make a
- 0:28Speaker 2: noise that is so unfathomably uncomfortable futation, yeah, and then
- 0:33Speaker 2: it sounds like eh, but really under your breath, do
- 0:37Speaker 2: you know what he's talking about?
- 0:38Speaker 3: Now we've all had, but now we do.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Just does came up when I was with my buddies
- 0:41Speaker 4: about getting the ack was my girl was a little
- 0:43Speaker 4: interested in me, but I didn't like her because she
- 0:45Speaker 4: smelled like chocolate.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Everyone was like the chocolate and it was like.
- 0:49Speaker 5: Her perfume or her sound whatever, wasn't it? And I
- 0:51Speaker 5: love chocolate?
- 0:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah?
- 0:52Speaker 6: When when is the person too far away to stop
- 0:56Speaker 6: and hold?
- 0:56Speaker 1: You know what happened to me today?
- 0:57Speaker 2: What's that distance? I think it's about ten feet?
- 1:00Speaker 6: Told, it takes me about an hour, not even an hour,
- 1:03Speaker 6: Like that's.
- 1:03Speaker 7: How small My love that's that it takes you an hour.
- 1:07Speaker 2: He's doing it twice, so it should be a half
- 1:11Speaker 2: doors open. This is Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota's official website.
- 1:16Speaker 2: For deals, buy a Toyota dot com. All right, welcome
- 1:21Speaker 2: to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Tuesday here at to Let Stadium,
- 1:25Speaker 2: an off season episode of Patriots Unfiltered. Uh so, I've
- 1:29Speaker 2: got something I want to talk about, Patriots related that
- 1:31Speaker 2: we'll get to in a second. But it's seven, it's Paul,
- 1:35Speaker 2: it's Deuce, it's me, and we're team Brunt today. Look
- 1:37Speaker 2: at us, it looks like we're prisoners. Like we just
- 1:41Speaker 2: got out on release, full work, release as new.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Alex said, we got wonderful, wonderful stuff from the sponsor yesterday,
- 1:48Speaker 4: and I felt like, you know what, I'll be all
- 1:50Speaker 4: aware at the thing today, and you guys can.
- 1:53Speaker 7: All were today.
- 1:54Speaker 1: No.
- 1:55Speaker 4: I was going first, but then Fred was, and then
- 1:57Speaker 4: you were like, well I'm going, and then Evid's like,
- 1:58Speaker 4: why can't so here we are?
- 2:00Speaker 6: I came down with them and I was like, well, okay,
- 2:02Speaker 6: I guess we're wearing them today.
- 2:03Speaker 2: We're doing it. We're team Brunt.
- 2:05Speaker 3: They're very comfortable. I actually really I want to thank
- 2:07Speaker 3: them for the boots as well.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I even have my boots on. I got my
- 2:12Speaker 2: boots on, So thank you Brunch for the gear. And
- 2:16Speaker 2: we're happy with well, we're happy to wear anything free
- 2:19Speaker 2: that people send us.
- 2:20Speaker 4: I mean, the boots are so nice. I don't I
- 2:22Speaker 4: don't know if I can. I'm going to really have
- 2:24Speaker 4: to suck it up to move my lawn on them.
- 2:26Speaker 4: I want to take care of that.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I think I'm going to actually get the other boots
- 2:30Speaker 2: from them. You know, traditional work boots. But aren't you
- 2:33Speaker 2: going to.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Feel bad, like you know, the grass clippings and well,
- 2:36Speaker 4: that's why.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I want to get that's when i's that's why I
- 2:40Speaker 2: want to get traditional work boots from them. They have
- 2:42Speaker 2: the Marron the style you.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Need, like the steel toe, and I don't need steel toe.
- 2:46Speaker 7: But do you play use you like when you do work,
- 2:50Speaker 7: you put work boots on.
- 2:51Speaker 8: No.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I have what they call muck boots. They're almost like
- 2:54Speaker 2: rubber boots, but they're like shoes, not they're not boots,
- 2:58Speaker 2: and they're just waterproof. Yeah, you know for yard work,
- 3:01Speaker 2: for yard work really, Yeah, I get down a dirty pole.
- 3:05Speaker 7: I have a pair of sneakers that I would never
- 3:08Speaker 7: I don't wear anymore.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I'm all green, I'm weating, I'm watering. I'm just I'm
- 3:13Speaker 2: doing a bunch of stuff. Don't don't you get wet?
- 3:16Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yeah, so you don't want sneakers?
- 3:18Speaker 7: Why forget?
- 3:20Speaker 2: What am I doing?
- 3:20Speaker 7: Why am I?
- 3:21Speaker 2: Like? So you're not doing stuff but yard work?
- 3:24Speaker 7: What are you doing yard work that you're you're soaking wet?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Sometimes I'm out there in the rain. Sometimes I'm in
- 3:29Speaker 2: the mud weating, I'm watering with a hose, I'm doing stuff.
- 3:33Speaker 6: I mean, you're not obligated to actually do the yard
- 3:36Speaker 6: work while it's raining. You can pick a time where
- 3:38Speaker 6: maybe it's not.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Sometimes it's actually when the ground's moist and loose. It's
- 3:42Speaker 2: the best time to weed. You get this stuff right up.
- 3:45Speaker 2: You'll see gloves.
- 3:45Speaker 7: You pull those weeds. It's moist and loose.
- 3:50Speaker 6: Well, listen, it depends on what you hate. But anyway,
- 3:54Speaker 6: all right, I did almost. I was telling you as
- 3:56Speaker 6: we were coming back, I almost sent you a photo
- 3:59Speaker 6: of when I fin cutting my grass, just to show
- 4:02Speaker 6: you your patch how small it is.
- 4:07Speaker 7: I did.
- 4:08Speaker 6: I was, I like the guy who sent me the
- 4:10Speaker 6: offensive Lineman video Paul cutting his grass, always getting the work.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I think, I think what you should do with that
- 4:17Speaker 2: patch is painted blue. Make it like the Blue Square
- 4:19Speaker 2: for those to Kraft would love that. What are you
- 4:25Speaker 2: looking at? Bugs? All right? All right? So you know,
- 4:27Speaker 2: as you know, I have a long commute and sometimes
- 4:29Speaker 2: I often think about, you know, Patriots related stuff, and
- 4:35Speaker 2: I was thinking, with the free agents that we brought in,
- 4:39Speaker 2: we've We've always said in the past, and it's true.
- 4:41Speaker 2: History will bear us out that when you bring in
- 4:44Speaker 2: a bunch of free agents all at once, rarely do
- 4:47Speaker 2: every one of them work out. You know, you're lucky
- 4:52Speaker 2: if half of them become regular contributors positively to the team.
- 4:57Speaker 2: But I was thinking, you know, in the case where
- 4:59Speaker 2: you have an new coach and now everybody on the
- 5:03Speaker 2: team is kind of learning at the same speed instead
- 5:07Speaker 2: of like a few years ago when we brought in
- 5:09Speaker 2: we had a lot of veterans learning, you know that
- 5:13Speaker 2: already knew everything, and then you bring in a hunter
- 5:15Speaker 2: Henry and they're trying to get up to speed with
- 5:17Speaker 2: the people. In this case, everybody's on the same page
- 5:21Speaker 2: because Rabel's new and it's all the staff is new.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I agree, and I think that might be an advantage
- 5:27Speaker 2: for these free agents, like they don't have to catch up.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Everything's being installed with them at the same speed as
- 5:33Speaker 2: the people who were here before because it's new to everybody.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So is that an advantage?
- 5:38Speaker 3: Some of them were more familiar. Harol Landry is more
- 5:41Speaker 3: familiar with what they're doing than the guys that were here.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yep, a guy like him, sure, yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 3: And there's probably know Spallane was in Vegas with McDaniels,
- 5:48Speaker 3: and you know, there's a lot of familiarity with groups.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Do you think that's a neutral or is it a negative?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Or is it an advantage this year to have everybody
- 5:59Speaker 2: learning at the same be and at the same time.
- 6:02Speaker 4: I think I got to talk it out a little
- 6:03Speaker 4: bit because I'm not here the areet. I would look
- 6:06Speaker 4: back at twenty one and say, do you think the
- 6:07Speaker 4: reason that some of those players didn't work out was
- 6:09Speaker 4: because they were trying to assimilate into Bill Belle.
- 6:12Speaker 7: That would be my pushback.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I don't.
- 6:13Speaker 6: I can't argue with anything that Fred said about it
- 6:15Speaker 6: being an advantage because it probably is that they're not
- 6:18Speaker 6: behind everybody else. They're all sort of on a level
- 6:22Speaker 6: playing field and everyone's right. There is even some that
- 6:24Speaker 6: are ahead of the game because they know Mike's stuff
- 6:27Speaker 6: a little bit. So I can't argue with Fred's overall premise.
- 6:30Speaker 6: I would just say that in my view of free agency,
- 6:35Speaker 6: I don't think a lot of people don't work out
- 6:37Speaker 6: in free agency because they can't pick up the system.
- 6:39Speaker 6: I think there are probably a variety of reasons. Most
- 6:43Speaker 6: of them, in my view, have to do with, well,
- 6:46Speaker 6: guys cash in and get a nice paycheck and they
- 6:48Speaker 6: no longer as motivated as maybe they once.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Were, or they were available because they're not that good. Yeah,
- 6:54Speaker 2: So I don't know. I was just thinking about it.
- 6:56Speaker 4: It's just it just I think it's a little more
- 6:59Speaker 4: chaotic in because some of the players that have been
- 7:02Speaker 4: here there's no guarantee that they're gonna pick up what
- 7:05Speaker 4: Josh McDaniels is throwing down now. So there's some degree
- 7:08Speaker 4: of uncertainty, you know, even with Drake May, what's that
- 7:10Speaker 4: going to look like? We saw progress in the summer
- 7:12Speaker 4: or say the spring, but it all has to come together.
- 7:16Speaker 5: I'm not sure. I'm really not sure, but I think
- 7:17Speaker 5: it's a great point.
- 7:18Speaker 7: And system fits. There's a lot of different.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Look at that Glass in twenty one that they brought out.
- 7:22Speaker 5: You know, Hunter Henry's been solid for them.
- 7:24Speaker 4: John Smith didn't work and even coming in you might
- 7:27Speaker 4: have said, might have been a little more excited about
- 7:29Speaker 4: Johnny Smith, just like the ceiling rasking And that.
- 7:31Speaker 7: Would be an example to me of a system fit.
- 7:34Speaker 6: Yeah, because obviously Smith has had some success in the league,
- 7:37Speaker 6: made a terrific year last year. Yeah, I mean so,
- 7:40Speaker 6: I mean it's not like you couldn't play. I don't
- 7:42Speaker 6: think it was like a laziness factor for him. I
- 7:45Speaker 6: think he probably just didn't fit great in McDaniels in
- 7:48Speaker 6: the Patriots offense.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm a deuce. I think that there's it's gonna go.
- 7:53Speaker 3: It could go either way for the players that are
- 7:54Speaker 3: also currently here on the roster, which I think is
- 7:58Speaker 3: in question, Like our certain guy guys that fit the
- 8:02Speaker 3: old system now not fits for this system. And does
- 8:04Speaker 3: that mean that they're now replaced by guys that they
- 8:06Speaker 3: brought in the advantage of the guys that they have
- 8:10Speaker 3: that they brought in is that there was a lot
- 8:13Speaker 3: of familiarity with this coaching staff in past stops. I
- 8:17Speaker 3: mentioned Harold Landry is probably the biggest one, but like
- 8:20Speaker 3: mac Collins was in Vegas with Josh McDaniels and had
- 8:23Speaker 3: a good year with the Raiders. A couple of years ago,
- 8:26Speaker 3: Jack Gibbons was with Rabel and Tennessee. You know, there
- 8:29Speaker 3: are a lot of guys like that, and they said
- 8:31Speaker 3: it when they signed a lot of these guys that
- 8:33Speaker 3: you have to have something like That's the only way
- 8:35Speaker 3: you can do this properly is have some familiarity so
- 8:38Speaker 3: that you hopefully avoid a John nu Smith where it's
- 8:42Speaker 3: not a system fit, it's not a fit in what
- 8:44Speaker 3: they want to do offensively, and then you end up
- 8:47Speaker 3: spending a lot of money and it doesn't work out
- 8:49Speaker 3: for both sides.
- 8:50Speaker 4: I think a clear place where it might be interesting
- 8:53Speaker 4: to watch as the offensive line because you have a
- 8:55Speaker 4: lot of different body types, a lot of different strengths
- 8:57Speaker 4: and weaknesses.
- 8:58Speaker 5: And that's a place where How do they.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Want to run the ball?
- 9:01Speaker 4: Do they want to be a zone team and get
- 9:04Speaker 4: guys out in space and take advantage of will Campbell
- 9:06Speaker 4: cold strange their athleticism or do they want to be
- 9:09Speaker 4: a power team and really focus on the Morgan Moses
- 9:11Speaker 4: and then.
- 9:11Speaker 5: Probably a combination of both. How does that all come together.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I think that position might be a really interesting one
- 9:17Speaker 4: to what you're talking about. But I feel somewhat like
- 9:19Speaker 4: you're tossing the pieces up in the air, the pieces
- 9:21Speaker 4: that were here, some of the pieces that were with
- 9:24Speaker 4: coaches previously. You feel confident about that they have a
- 9:26Speaker 4: plan for those guys. But at the same time, someone
- 9:29Speaker 4: like Pop Douglas, we were really curious about him coming
- 9:32Speaker 4: into the spring what he He looks like he's fits
- 9:34Speaker 4: in and it looks like they have a plan for him,
- 9:37Speaker 4: you know. But Kendrick Bourne, I'm not sure. Jalen Polk,
- 9:40Speaker 4: I'm not sure, Booty, I'm not sure.
- 9:42Speaker 5: All those guys. How is it all going to come together? Yeah,
- 9:45Speaker 5: and it'll be interesting, you know.
- 9:46Speaker 2: And it kind of goes back to when we were
- 9:47Speaker 2: watching the first mini camp live outside we were doing
- 9:51Speaker 2: our show and Vrabel had his press conference before practice
- 9:55Speaker 2: and he was talking about bomb war and somebody asked him,
- 9:58Speaker 2: you know, what are he said, you know, he's co enthusiastic,
- 10:02Speaker 2: And it just dawned on me that we know more
- 10:05Speaker 2: than about bar more than maybe Rabel.
- 10:07Speaker 8: Did.
- 10:07Speaker 2: You know so all these well Evan does, but you know,
- 10:11Speaker 2: so all these players they're new to Rabel, you know,
- 10:15Speaker 2: with the exception of like a Landry and and Rabel's
- 10:22Speaker 2: new to.
- 10:22Speaker 7: Them, so like like I like your outside the box
- 10:26Speaker 7: then Freddy, I don't know.
- 10:27Speaker 3: That's that part of it's fascinating to me too, because
- 10:30Speaker 3: they're going to be guys from the last couple of
- 10:33Speaker 3: draft classes, especially that we thought the arrow was pointing
- 10:36Speaker 3: one way on that they might not have any use for.
- 10:39Speaker 3: And I don't mean that as a disrespectful thing, but
- 10:41Speaker 3: like they just might not see them as as what
- 10:44Speaker 3: the old regime saw them as. And I think in
- 10:46Speaker 3: the spring, like we saw maybe that with Leyden Robinson,
- 10:49Speaker 3: Like Leyden Robinson, I think a lot of us thought
- 10:52Speaker 3: was going to get the opportunity to start at left guard.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Potentially might still get it, but based off the Spring,
- 10:58Speaker 3: we didn't see him as much as some of the
- 10:59Speaker 3: other So example, you know, are we sure that they
- 11:03Speaker 3: have Freddy Jennings, Yeah, Like you know, Jelani Tavai, you know,
- 11:06Speaker 3: all the guys that we've talked about. Do they see
- 11:09Speaker 3: those players the same way that maybe we do because
- 11:13Speaker 3: they were in different schemes.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I mean, it's a clean slave for everybody. I mean
- 11:16Speaker 2: because even the coaching staff. It's such a wholesale change
- 11:19Speaker 2: this year. You know, there weren't even a lot of
- 11:21Speaker 2: holdovers on the coaching staff, so there's no favorites. Really,
- 11:25Speaker 2: you know, a guy like Poke, there's no attachment to
- 11:30Speaker 2: him because he was my second round pick and you
- 11:33Speaker 2: know he's he's starting fresh with everybody else.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Well, how did you guys see the with Bill from
- 11:39Speaker 4: his first year when he made some changes and then
- 11:42Speaker 4: the second year was really the year he brought in
- 11:43Speaker 4: all those free agents, right, But were there players you
- 11:46Speaker 4: felt like and this is the only real example we
- 11:48Speaker 4: have to go off of players that he held on
- 11:50Speaker 4: to in two thousand that you thought, all right, he's
- 11:51Speaker 4: holding on this guy. He's going to be a part
- 11:53Speaker 4: of it, and then he got into the season and realized, no,
- 11:56Speaker 4: this isn't you know some of these guys that I
- 11:58Speaker 4: maybe gave a chance to play under me or play
- 12:01Speaker 4: my style it didn't quite work out.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Were the guys you know, I don't.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I mean other than the guys they drafted. I think
- 12:06Speaker 2: they he hated everybody.
- 12:07Speaker 6: Yeah, well, the two thousand team, two thousand and two
- 12:11Speaker 6: thousand and one, he over those two off seasons sort
- 12:15Speaker 6: of systematically got rid of a lot of the guys
- 12:18Speaker 6: that he didn't.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Like Malloy and Law of course, Bruce Kip.
- 12:22Speaker 6: There were holdovers like but there were veterans, you know,
- 12:24Speaker 6: I think Bruce Armstrong played one year with Belichick then left.
- 12:28Speaker 7: Chris Slade I don't even think played a year right Belichick.
- 12:30Speaker 7: He you know, he was gone.
- 12:31Speaker 6: So there was some veterans that he clearly didn't have
- 12:34Speaker 6: a long term vision of and he moved on and
- 12:38Speaker 6: he replaced, you know, like a guy like Bruce Armstrong
- 12:40Speaker 6: was thought to be a good leader, you know, maybe
- 12:43Speaker 6: good for the young guys, and so he went out
- 12:46Speaker 6: and he got like Anthony Pleasant and and guys like
- 12:50Speaker 6: that that could be leaders in different position obviously, but
- 12:54Speaker 6: the Bill guys he got his guys from the Jets
- 12:57Speaker 6: brought him here to sort of fill those kinds of roles.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Able to totally make a team over in one offseason
- 13:03Speaker 4: in your image, I think, you know, it lined up
- 13:05Speaker 4: well for him this year that they were able to
- 13:07Speaker 4: bring in a number of guys because they had the
- 13:10Speaker 4: resources to do that. But I think it's a process
- 13:13Speaker 4: getting your team over the first few years. You're probably
- 13:16Speaker 4: situated in a place too. I didn't Bill even say
- 13:18Speaker 4: like it was really like they didn't think the two
- 13:20Speaker 4: thousand and one team was really put together to win
- 13:23Speaker 4: a super Bowl though that was a miracle to it,
- 13:24Speaker 4: but no or four division starts to actually come together.
- 13:28Speaker 4: But there probably are going to be some players on
- 13:30Speaker 4: this Patriots roster this year that maybe aren't their first
- 13:34Speaker 4: choice or maybe they aren't the best fits. But you
- 13:36Speaker 4: can't do everything in one offseason, so we'll see who
- 13:38Speaker 4: those players are.
- 13:39Speaker 2: It's rare, what Bill did you know, especially with a
- 13:44Speaker 2: quarterback who had never started before, you know.
- 13:46Speaker 6: And it's like, you know, to Mike's point, look at
- 13:49Speaker 6: wide receiver. They tried to get some guys, you know,
- 13:54Speaker 6: and the most notably Chris Godwin. Right, that's the one
- 13:56Speaker 6: reportedly that they offered a lot.
- 13:58Speaker 7: Of money to.
- 14:01Speaker 6: So my guess is they didn't necessarily this wasn't their
- 14:04Speaker 6: ideal situation to get Stefan Diggs coming off of twenty
- 14:07Speaker 6: at ACL and having it, you know, to sort of
- 14:11Speaker 6: invest in that.
- 14:12Speaker 7: But you pivot, you do the best you can.
- 14:14Speaker 6: To your point, Mike, you can't just completely remake the
- 14:17Speaker 6: roster exactly the way you want it in one offseason.
- 14:20Speaker 6: Now I think they've done a really good job of it.
- 14:22Speaker 6: And this is why, you know, I keep saying the
- 14:24Speaker 6: same story. People keep asking me when you when you
- 14:27Speaker 6: bump into people, well what do you think? And I
- 14:29Speaker 6: keep saying the same phrase. I think a lot of
- 14:31Speaker 6: the players they signed are better than the players they're
- 14:33Speaker 6: going to be replacing. That should translate to a better team,
- 14:37Speaker 6: a better roster. And that's I mean, let's face it.
- 14:40Speaker 6: We can talk all about schemes, you know, and Evan
- 14:42Speaker 6: does it really well. It breaks down a lot of
- 14:45Speaker 6: the stuff that they're going to be doing system wise
- 14:47Speaker 6: on both sides of the ball. It isn't going to
- 14:50Speaker 6: matter a lot if whatever the thirteen or fourteen guys
- 14:54Speaker 6: that they signed, if to Fred's point, at least half
- 14:57Speaker 6: of them aren't, you know, solid hits, because they need
- 15:00Speaker 6: more talent than they had.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:02Speaker 4: The thought experiment that interests me though, is just if
- 15:05Speaker 4: frable Hood come in last year when all those guys
- 15:07Speaker 4: were coming up, and we talked about it plenty, but
- 15:10Speaker 4: the Duggers, the when us, you know, Paul, you were
- 15:13Speaker 4: famously like didn't really have a problem individually resigning any
- 15:16Speaker 4: of those guys, but in the total of bringing everybody back.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And I looked at it.
- 15:20Speaker 4: At the time as saying again, like you can't do
- 15:23Speaker 4: everything in one off season. You can't just let this
- 15:26Speaker 4: giant free agency class walk. You have to be selected.
- 15:29Speaker 4: But in my mind, how would Rabel have approached that.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Would he have kind of let everybody walk and try
- 15:34Speaker 4: to get his own guys?
- 15:35Speaker 6: Just showed you he didn't get rid of everybody, but
- 15:38Speaker 6: he got rid of a good amount of people and
- 15:39Speaker 6: replaced them with guys that he thought were better, like in.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Godshalk kind of move, Like that's a move to me
- 15:44Speaker 4: that signals solid player, not really going to fit what
- 15:48Speaker 4: we want to do, and we have.
- 15:49Speaker 2: To for whatever reason. Last year, right from the beginning,
- 15:53Speaker 2: it seemed like everything they were doing was in catch
- 15:57Speaker 2: up mode, from filling out their coaching staf have to
- 16:00Speaker 2: filling out their roster. It was all like it seemed
- 16:03Speaker 2: like they were hurrying to do everything for whatever reason,
- 16:07Speaker 2: Like they didn't have the network, they didn't they didn't
- 16:09Speaker 2: have the pro scouting. I don't know what the reason was,
- 16:13Speaker 2: but it seemed like they were taking shortcuts to do
- 16:16Speaker 2: everything because they didn't either know what they wanted to
- 16:19Speaker 2: do or didn't have the I disagree a.
- 16:22Speaker 6: Little, okay, and only that I don't think it. I
- 16:26Speaker 6: don't think they try to take a short cut. I
- 16:27Speaker 6: think it was a misevaluation, I think, and I don't
- 16:30Speaker 6: have anything to back this up. So this is one
- 16:32Speaker 6: of those sort of Paul, you know, you can make
- 16:34Speaker 6: fun of me about this in two months, and you'll
- 16:37Speaker 6: probably be right to do that. I feel they what
- 16:42Speaker 6: was it, last year was twenty four, so the twenty
- 16:44Speaker 6: three four? The last year of Belichick was twenty three, right, yep.
- 16:49Speaker 6: I think if you asked your odd Mayo and the
- 16:52Speaker 6: staff that he kept, you know, like the Covington's and
- 16:55Speaker 6: the Pellegrinos and those kinds of guys, I think if
- 16:59Speaker 6: you gave him truth saying last February, they would say
- 17:04Speaker 6: we were better than a four and thirteen team. There's
- 17:06Speaker 6: more talent here than four and thirteen. We weren't coached
- 17:09Speaker 6: well last year. We had some justsfunctioning the coaching staff
- 17:11Speaker 6: last year. That's why we were four and thirteen. That's
- 17:14Speaker 6: why we're going to keep some of these guys, because
- 17:16Speaker 6: we think that these guys are better than they looked
- 17:18Speaker 6: last year.
- 17:19Speaker 7: Okay, I think it was a misevaluation could be.
- 17:21Speaker 1: It could be.
- 17:22Speaker 6: I have nothing to back that up, yeah, because not
- 17:23Speaker 6: like someone has told me behind the scenes that this
- 17:26Speaker 6: was all on Bill.
- 17:27Speaker 7: No one said that to me. I'm not suggesting it
- 17:29Speaker 7: could be because you know, you factor in like I'm
- 17:31Speaker 7: judging by their actions.
- 17:32Speaker 9: Gerrod Mayo was there, and maybe he was friends with
- 17:36Speaker 9: these guys. You know, well clearly on the defensive side
- 17:39Speaker 9: of the ball, that's where Gerrod was. He knew that
- 17:41Speaker 9: coaching staff more intimately, he knew the players more intimately.
- 17:44Speaker 6: He thought that Bill was distracted, and he probably was. Now,
- 17:47Speaker 6: you know, with two years of hindsight and these stories
- 17:49Speaker 6: are all coming out, he Bill probably was distracted in
- 17:52Speaker 6: twenty three. That, you know, just exacerbated a talent issue.
- 17:56Speaker 6: In my view, I don't think he had a great
- 17:58Speaker 6: year of coaching in twenty three. We talked about it
- 18:00Speaker 6: at the time. I'm not speaking out of school, no.
- 18:02Speaker 4: No, it was.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Yeah, So anyway, that was just my thought. I don't
- 18:06Speaker 2: know if anyone else has any well.
- 18:08Speaker 3: On those same last something I was I don't even
- 18:10Speaker 3: know why I was thinking about this, because I just
- 18:12Speaker 3: think about random Patriots things all the time. But you know,
- 18:15Speaker 3: with the coaching staff that Garrod put together. Would it
- 18:18Speaker 3: have been different, because I think it might have been
- 18:21Speaker 3: if he had kept Steve Belichick because they had this
- 18:26Speaker 3: great relationship the two of them, where like they had
- 18:29Speaker 3: they were kind of co defensive coordinators at the end
- 18:32Speaker 3: of Bill and Steve was the play caller and Gerrod
- 18:35Speaker 3: was like more the presenter and like, you know, the
- 18:37Speaker 3: former player that could say this is the attitude and
- 18:40Speaker 3: this is the things we're gonna do, and then you know,
- 18:43Speaker 3: he hands the defense over to Covington instead, who was
- 18:47Speaker 3: also green and also had no experience doing the job.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Well, we were fed that they had this great relationship.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Did they really or was that for show? I don't know.
- 18:56Speaker 3: I don't know, but I mean I saw them together
- 18:59Speaker 3: all the time. I mean, so that's that's all.
- 19:02Speaker 10: That's all I walking out togeoping around.
- 19:06Speaker 4: I don't want to make too much of it, like
- 19:07Speaker 4: all their best friends, but like the vibe I get.
- 19:10Speaker 6: Staff in general, I think Evan's point is valid. The
- 19:13Speaker 6: staff was not an ideal situation. They probably didn't get
- 19:16Speaker 6: some of the guys they wanted. They probably didn't get
- 19:18Speaker 6: some of the guys to stay that they wish.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Did so if he had kept the defensive side of
- 19:22Speaker 3: the ball the same with Steve, and Steve was the
- 19:25Speaker 3: defensive coordinator and he was calling the plays, and that
- 19:28Speaker 3: whole side of the ball was was the same as
- 19:30Speaker 3: it was, and I would just say, also, what the
- 19:33Speaker 3: offensive side of the ball.
- 19:34Speaker 11: You know.
- 19:35Speaker 3: I think where I was coming from with it was
- 19:37Speaker 3: like their plan was probably for Bill to set him
- 19:40Speaker 3: up a little bit better than he did, right and
- 19:42Speaker 3: and have to be more of a peaceful transition of
- 19:45Speaker 3: power from Bill to Gerrod, so that there wasn't this
- 19:49Speaker 3: entire fallout of the coaching staff and everything like that.
- 19:52Speaker 3: And I think that was such a big part of
- 19:53Speaker 3: last year was that it wasn't just that Gerard was
- 19:56Speaker 3: a first year head coach. It was that everybody around
- 19:59Speaker 3: him was really kind to not fit for their jobs.
- 20:02Speaker 3: And so like if you had had Steve at defensive coordinator,
- 20:05Speaker 3: if you had Bill O'Brien, you know, staying or Josh
- 20:08Speaker 3: coming back as the offensive coordinator, it wouldn't it have
- 20:11Speaker 3: been different? Because now I just feel like everything that
- 20:15Speaker 3: happened last year is completely we throw it out, like
- 20:19Speaker 3: that whole draft class from last year, you know. Besides
- 20:23Speaker 3: obviously Drake Mayle, like, are any of those guys guaranteed
- 20:26Speaker 3: to make the team?
- 20:27Speaker 2: Well, it's it's if there's one thing that Mayo needed,
- 20:31Speaker 2: it was support, right, and ye had very little well.
- 20:34Speaker 6: And one of the things that I've sort of listening
- 20:37Speaker 6: to people talk about it, and I think I was
- 20:40Speaker 6: guilty of probably underestimating it, but just the importance of
- 20:44Speaker 6: the right fits on staffs, and you know, and I
- 20:46Speaker 6: told you I think I talked about this late last
- 20:48Speaker 6: week on a Thursday show because I had talked to
- 20:51Speaker 6: Mike for the yearbook feature and just about the.
- 20:55Speaker 7: Dynamics of putting the staff together and stuff.
- 20:57Speaker 6: And I do think finding guys that can work together
- 21:02Speaker 6: and put egos aside and sort of all be pulling
- 21:06Speaker 6: in the right direction.
- 21:07Speaker 7: I think sometimes we underestimate. I mean, I should just
- 21:09Speaker 7: speak for myself.
- 21:10Speaker 6: I think I underestimated the damage that can happen with
- 21:13Speaker 6: division within a coaching staff. And you saw it with
- 21:17Speaker 6: that year of just utter dysfunction twenty two and twenty three,
- 21:21Speaker 6: with the defensive guys on offense in twenty two, Clem
- 21:26Speaker 6: being part time at best as an offensive line coach
- 21:29Speaker 6: in twenty three, putting everything on Bill O'Brien's plate to
- 21:33Speaker 6: run the entirety of the offense, not just coordinating it,
- 21:37Speaker 6: but position group wise.
- 21:39Speaker 7: David Andrews was a de facto offensive line coach.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I'ven really sure Bill O'Brien was Bill's pick anyways, And
- 21:45Speaker 3: it just was a.
- 21:46Speaker 6: Lot of division, I think within the ranks on those
- 21:49Speaker 6: two staffs, and I think they can really undermine what
- 21:52Speaker 6: you're doing as a head coach.
- 21:54Speaker 4: Yep, when Barth's cheating on you with David Andrews now
- 21:56Speaker 4: and that his new podcast, you should ask him a lot.
- 21:58Speaker 7: That's a fair point.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I just feel like when you look at the setup
- 22:03Speaker 3: that they have now, they just have so much more
- 22:06Speaker 3: experience on the coaching staff and everybody has a title
- 22:11Speaker 3: that they belong in that role, you know, and you
- 22:14Speaker 3: can see that out at practice, like how much more
- 22:17Speaker 3: efficient and how much the pace is much faster, And
- 22:20Speaker 3: it seems like they're much further along from an installation
- 22:24Speaker 3: point of view as well in terms of the scheme
- 22:26Speaker 3: from what they were last year, and like to friend's
- 22:29Speaker 3: point earlier, like they never were in control of it,
- 22:32Speaker 3: Like they were never ahead of it, they were never
- 22:34Speaker 3: in control of it.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yeah, they were always playing catch up.
- 22:36Speaker 3: And now we just see this, it's just a start.
- 22:39Speaker 4: I mean, I still remember that Mac Jones press conference
- 22:42Speaker 4: from twenty two where I remember that day. I mean,
- 22:44Speaker 4: David Andrews was front center, he came off, he was pissed. Yeah,
- 22:48Speaker 4: that was to me the start of what exactly are
- 22:52Speaker 4: you talking about?
- 22:54Speaker 5: Twenty twenty two training camp.
- 22:55Speaker 4: We had gone through some practices and over and over
- 22:57Speaker 4: it seemed like the offense looked pretty clunky, full periods
- 23:00Speaker 4: where it was just wide zone, right, wide zone, right,
- 23:03Speaker 4: wide zone.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Right, you know, over and over again. And that was
- 23:06Speaker 5: when the media glombed onto the wide zone.
- 23:08Speaker 7: What did we do?
- 23:09Speaker 5: That was the big storyline.
- 23:10Speaker 4: But there was one in particular practice where it was like,
- 23:12Speaker 4: at some point, it's got to get better. Right, having
- 23:15Speaker 4: watched some training camp practices, I give the offense a
- 23:17Speaker 4: little lee way early, and it's it's easier to destroy
- 23:20Speaker 4: than create. The defense is coming ready to go, and
- 23:22Speaker 4: you know it takes a little while to coordinate an offense,
- 23:24Speaker 4: but they just couldn't get it going.
- 23:25Speaker 5: And that was the first time post Josh McDaniels where
- 23:29Speaker 5: you felt like there.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Wasn't really a progression like they're not really getting better,
- 23:32Speaker 4: like how are they going to compete this year?
- 23:34Speaker 5: How are they going to score points?
- 23:36Speaker 4: And you know, from that year into twenty three and
- 23:38Speaker 4: then into last year, it was really just a battle
- 23:42Speaker 4: on offense. And not to say that, I feel like, wow,
- 23:44Speaker 4: we're watching the seven team out there. Disclaimer, I know people,
- 23:47Speaker 4: hey when we do that, right, but they they look progressing,
- 23:51Speaker 4: They look like they had a plan.
- 23:52Speaker 5: It looked like they had a philosophy.
- 23:54Speaker 4: And when we're in this section of the field, here's
- 23:55Speaker 4: something what we want to sprinkle in or you know
- 23:57Speaker 4: those kind of things. So I feel in after OTAs,
- 24:01Speaker 4: But you're always cautious because you know how competitive this
- 24:05Speaker 4: league is and if there are any flaws in your team,
- 24:08Speaker 4: opponents will find a way to exploit them, or injuries
- 24:10Speaker 4: will as well.
- 24:11Speaker 6: Mike always knows that the defense it's easier to destroy
- 24:14Speaker 6: than create, because you know, he he doesn't remember those
- 24:17Speaker 6: boring twelve and four teams that dominated every training camp practice.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Off Seriously, though, was it right from the get go?
- 24:23Speaker 4: Like it was like they were never every year the
- 24:26Speaker 4: complete straight years, right, that's complete continuity, And we got
- 24:30Speaker 4: sort of back.
- 24:30Speaker 2: We got so used to that we're like, oh, this
- 24:32Speaker 2: is how it's supposed to be.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Even in nineteen they were eighteen and nineteen when it
- 24:37Speaker 3: started the offense when declining by their status, it was
- 24:40Speaker 3: still I still remember being in Detroit and they were
- 24:43Speaker 3: doing like two minutes towards the end of practice, like
- 24:45Speaker 3: real competitive stuff, enjoying practices, and Brady was just dicing them.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Like I saw one camp with Brady. Then I saw
- 24:51Speaker 4: Cam Newton camp.
- 24:52Speaker 7: I Cam, you know, I am Jacobe.
- 24:56Speaker 5: Last year, the Cam.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Newton camp had hope at the end though, because they
- 24:59Speaker 3: started running the quarterback and like they started designing the offense.
- 25:03Speaker 3: McDaniel started to get in the lab and really design
- 25:05Speaker 3: it for Cam because they had that Fox quarterback competition
- 25:09Speaker 3: at the beginning that was never a real competition with
- 25:11Speaker 3: Stidham and stuff. And then once they started doing some
- 25:14Speaker 3: of the camera stuff, once they started doing some of
- 25:18Speaker 3: the cam stuff, it was like, okay, like I could
- 25:20Speaker 3: see where they're headed with this. Now obviously he fell
- 25:23Speaker 3: off the rails, but it had hope.
- 25:26Speaker 2: So, speaking of practice and preparation and the old times
- 25:31Speaker 2: across my timeline today came a compilation of games with
- 25:35Speaker 2: names and obviously it's Edelman, but he was interviewing Ernie,
- 25:40Speaker 2: Bill O'Brien, Patricia, and McDaniel separately, and he broke it
- 25:45Speaker 2: up and goes back and forth between the four of them.
- 25:47Speaker 2: But if you want to dive deep into X and
- 25:49Speaker 2: o's and how they practiced and.
- 25:52Speaker 7: All that stuff, I've listened to them.
- 25:54Speaker 4: It was.
- 25:54Speaker 2: It was really good. It's about forty five minutes. Total
- 25:58Speaker 2: good stuff.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Though David really like although he sits down with some
- 26:02Speaker 3: of them for like almost two hours and in the
- 26:04Speaker 3: full episodes, and the McDaniels one is great now in hindsight,
- 26:07Speaker 3: because he talks a lot about Drake and how he
- 26:09Speaker 3: would use Drake May and now he's actually coaching Drake May.
- 26:12Speaker 3: So it's a spoiler, Yeah, right, it is. But it
- 26:15Speaker 3: is kind of cool to hear him talk about you know,
- 26:17Speaker 3: he was really big in the podcast at least about
- 26:20Speaker 3: Drake running and he was like, well, are they going
- 26:22Speaker 3: to run him?
- 26:23Speaker 11: More?
- 26:23Speaker 3: Like you know, I probably would like type of thing.
- 26:25Speaker 3: And I was like, Okay, the attendants perk up there,
- 26:29Speaker 3: but yeah, they did a lot of All of them
- 26:31Speaker 3: are great, but I would say Patricia was sneaky good.
- 26:36Speaker 7: Sneaky good.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah, he was.
- 26:38Speaker 3: He was really good.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Tricia is a smart guy. Yeah, he's a smart guy.
- 26:42Speaker 2: He was put in a bad position, whether he volunteered
- 26:45Speaker 2: or not. He wasn't supposed to be an offensive coordinator.
- 26:49Speaker 4: I interviewed him for the four Super Bowl Soundofics.
- 26:53Speaker 7: He's awesome.
- 26:53Speaker 4: I mean just great, great story, great storyteller, and it's
- 26:57Speaker 4: fun to hear these guys finally come out of the woodwork.
- 27:00Speaker 4: Which as fans that twenty years, you want to know
- 27:02Speaker 4: what's it like behind the scenes, What kind of game
- 27:04Speaker 4: planning and stuff like that are you doing?
- 27:06Speaker 5: So I eat all that stuff up.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Were you did you see when they were talking about
- 27:10Speaker 2: rams scene which one this was they were talking, well,
- 27:14Speaker 2: it was in a couple of them. Ernie he talked
- 27:17Speaker 2: about it, and I think he might have talked about
- 27:19Speaker 2: it with Josh too, about how and this goes back
- 27:22Speaker 2: to the Colts game where the Colts were just ripping
- 27:25Speaker 2: everybody up down the scene and so Clark so the Patriots.
- 27:29Speaker 2: The Patriots started playing Cover four against that, and then
- 27:34Speaker 2: Ernie was watching the Manning cast later this is obviously
- 27:37Speaker 2: after they retired, and whoever was on the screen, Peyton said,
- 27:43Speaker 2: I hate I hate Cover four. And Ernie was watching
- 27:46Speaker 2: like that's why we did it.
- 27:50Speaker 3: I remember that clip. Yeah, that was a good one
- 27:52Speaker 3: from him, and I think that maybe the I mean,
- 27:55Speaker 3: I ate up all of it, and especially the Josh
- 27:57Speaker 3: stuff was just awesome. But the Patricia stuff, him talking
- 28:01Speaker 3: about how he would make his call sheet for a
- 28:03Speaker 3: game on defense, Yeah, was just so cool, Like, you know,
- 28:06Speaker 3: to him talking about it and how much he would
- 28:08Speaker 3: tinker with it, and like he said that he would
- 28:10Speaker 3: go through like ten different drafts. You know, you just
- 28:12Speaker 3: constantly up all night tinkering with it and you know,
- 28:16Speaker 3: different doing different things. But it was really cool to
- 28:18Speaker 3: hear about like the process of how you know, they
- 28:21Speaker 3: identify the package the offense is in the the down
- 28:24Speaker 3: and distance and the situation, and they have the calls
- 28:27Speaker 3: that they would call in that situation, and it's like
- 28:29Speaker 3: this whole puzzle is cool.
- 28:30Speaker 5: So chaotic.
- 28:31Speaker 4: That was the biggest thing I took from playing football.
- 28:33Speaker 4: As you watch football growing up, and it seems all
- 28:35Speaker 4: very paced and all right, it's second and three. Now,
- 28:38Speaker 4: let's recoup it.
- 28:39Speaker 5: And when you're in, when you're in it, it's just.
- 28:43Speaker 2: On the ground, you get up, you're right. It's like
- 28:45Speaker 2: you barely know the situation, you know. Yeah, And it's
- 28:48Speaker 2: the same thing for they I know, well.
- 28:51Speaker 5: I guess you just didn't play hard enough. But you
- 28:53Speaker 5: know with Matt like you just see with the coaches
- 28:55Speaker 5: like they need to streamline that process.
- 28:57Speaker 4: So the chaotic nature of it and the speed and
- 29:00Speaker 4: the rhythm of the play calling and it's just it.
- 29:03Speaker 5: I imagine they get out of those games and they're like,
- 29:04Speaker 5: what just happened?
- 29:05Speaker 6: Well, And that's part of like when you watch how
- 29:07Speaker 6: they build the offense in the summers, and you don't
- 29:10Speaker 6: always know exactly what they're doing, but you see the
- 29:13Speaker 6: groups of plays that they do, it's like, okay, we're
- 29:15Speaker 6: gonna you know, you can tell what they're working on there.
- 29:19Speaker 6: You know, their second in set, you know, second in
- 29:22Speaker 6: whatever five to seven yards, and they have a handful
- 29:26Speaker 6: of those plays. We're working on second in three here,
- 29:29Speaker 6: because that's a whole different parameter, you know. And then
- 29:32Speaker 6: they're you know, it's not just we're working on first down,
- 29:35Speaker 6: second and third down, it's the down and distance ye
- 29:39Speaker 6: comes into it. And you can see when they're working
- 29:41Speaker 6: on you know sets, you know, they might have eight
- 29:43Speaker 6: or ten plays they're working on that are just like
- 29:46Speaker 6: second down plays varying distances.
- 29:49Speaker 2: And Paul, you would have loved the segment with Ernie
- 29:51Speaker 2: talking about analytics and Ernie was saying, like, listen, I
- 29:56Speaker 2: use analytics, but it has to make sense because you know,
- 30:00Speaker 2: like in the NBA they have the three point analytics.
- 30:03Speaker 2: That's fine if you have guys who can you know,
- 30:05Speaker 2: shoot three points, But you can't force that if you
- 30:08Speaker 2: guys can't hit three points, because the analytics are only
- 30:11Speaker 2: good if they make sense.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Right, you know, he was, I would say, probably a
- 30:17Speaker 3: pioneer of football analytics. Now, I don't know if I
- 30:21Speaker 3: guess he would, would he say it was analytics, I
- 30:24Speaker 3: don't know, but he placing even things like placing value
- 30:30Speaker 3: in terms of like grading scales with prospects and stuff
- 30:32Speaker 3: like that. You know, they they were all, you know,
- 30:35Speaker 3: the Bills and Ernie like they're all in the parcels
- 30:37Speaker 3: I mean in Belichick, like they're all at the beginning
- 30:41Speaker 3: of that. Like there truly were trailblazers of all that
- 30:44Speaker 3: kind of stuff. And now all these teams are doing
- 30:47Speaker 3: things and like a lot of teams still use the
- 30:49Speaker 3: parcels scale to grade prospects. It's still the same exact
- 30:53Speaker 3: scale that Bill Parcells had basically came up with in
- 30:57Speaker 3: the eighties.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:57Speaker 4: So it was one thing I told Paul after reading
- 30:59Speaker 4: the Parcels biography was that a lot of the schematic
- 31:04Speaker 4: coaching things and decisions that I think Bill gets a
- 31:06Speaker 4: lot of credit for that, Parcels was kind of the
- 31:08Speaker 4: trail blazer of, hey, let's change it completely up this week.
- 31:11Speaker 2: We have to if we want to win this game.
- 31:13Speaker 8: Yea.
- 31:13Speaker 2: I think I think Bill's secret was his versatility. Bill
- 31:17Speaker 2: Belichick was his versatility. He took all these things that
- 31:20Speaker 2: he learned or heard of back with, you know, from
- 31:23Speaker 2: Paul Brown and everything, and mashed it up and became
- 31:27Speaker 2: this like versatile you know coach or this coach that
- 31:30Speaker 2: based things on game plan and versatility because he had,
- 31:35Speaker 2: you know, he was able to draw from all of this,
- 31:38Speaker 2: you know, and then of course he made his own
- 31:40Speaker 2: variations on it. But he had this vast encyclopedia in
- 31:44Speaker 2: his head that he could draw. Like I always said,
- 31:46Speaker 2: he could be in oc without a play sheet. He
- 31:48Speaker 2: wouldn't even need a play sheet. I'll bet if he
- 31:50Speaker 2: were to be in OC.
- 31:52Speaker 5: In talking to some of the agent highly question, I
- 31:56Speaker 5: don't not at his height.
- 31:58Speaker 7: Only only if he won the game seven three, which
- 32:02Speaker 7: was his goal.
- 32:02Speaker 2: I think, if anything, he was versatile and adaptable.
- 32:06Speaker 4: Like one of the most interesting things to me schematically
- 32:08Speaker 4: about the Patriots is just that both of their schemes
- 32:10Speaker 4: that Bill used go back to the seventies.
- 32:12Speaker 5: And you know, when I was watching the eighty five team.
- 32:14Speaker 4: You look at this three four defense and it's clearly
- 32:16Speaker 4: the Fairbanks Bowl of three to four defense. And talking
- 32:19Speaker 4: to some of the players and they said, Bill Belichick
- 32:21Speaker 4: was around when we were running that, and he's you know,
- 32:23Speaker 4: he's all, what's that guy doing here? You know, he's
- 32:25Speaker 4: here learning That's what That's what Bill did. But interesting,
- 32:29Speaker 4: I mean, Parcels was here in eighty Like, there's so
- 32:32Speaker 4: many roots from that team that go back into the seventies.
- 32:35Speaker 4: I think a lot of people don't even really truly really.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Absolutely was listening to uh Cooper cup was on the
- 32:39Speaker 3: podcast recently talking about the McVeigh offense and you know
- 32:43Speaker 3: what makes it so great? And he was talking about
- 32:46Speaker 3: the Super Bowl in twenty eighteen and about how the
- 32:50Speaker 3: Patriots defended them basically kind of pioneered a defense and
- 32:55Speaker 3: it was kind of started with Fangio and actually Matt
- 32:58Speaker 3: Patricia like during the regular season, but the Page Church
- 33:00Speaker 3: just did it at an even better level on the
- 33:02Speaker 3: biggest stage. And then that forced McVeigh to then change
- 33:06Speaker 3: his offense because they figured out the offense that he
- 33:09Speaker 3: was running before, so then he had to add things
- 33:11Speaker 3: to change the offense. But that was always like you
- 33:14Speaker 3: know friend's point about Bill being so versatile. You know,
- 33:17Speaker 3: they're them playing man to man against Kansas City for
- 33:21Speaker 3: four straight quarters in the ANFC Championship Game and then
- 33:24Speaker 3: completely reinventing themselves in two weeks in the Super Bowl
- 33:27Speaker 3: to play zone against the Rams and play a totally
- 33:30Speaker 3: different branded defense won them the Super Bowl. You know,
- 33:33Speaker 3: their ability to do that was was second to none.
- 33:36Speaker 3: And you know they they run the six to one
- 33:38Speaker 3: and you know the quarter stuff and yeah, I mean.
- 33:42Speaker 7: Great job shot, you know change. I mean it's just unbelievable.
- 33:46Speaker 2: But like literally.
- 33:49Speaker 3: McVeigh like went into like a dark place because he
- 33:52Speaker 3: was like, oh my, like Bill just figured me out
- 33:54Speaker 3: on and like pants me in the Super Bowl. And
- 33:56Speaker 3: then they start running you know, more duo and more
- 33:59Speaker 3: gap skiing because like they're running, you know, the six
- 34:01Speaker 3: guys across the line of scrimmage, so they're trying to
- 34:03Speaker 3: get vertical instead of going side to side, and like
- 34:06Speaker 3: they just had to completely reinvent themselves because Bill basically
- 34:09Speaker 3: gave the blueprint of like this is how you defend this.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Boy.
- 34:12Speaker 4: I just went back to Matt Patricia and I can
- 34:14Speaker 4: imagine that play call sheet is so finely tuned, and
- 34:18Speaker 4: you don't want to have to think about like to
- 34:20Speaker 4: your point, Paulward and second and long like this is
- 34:22Speaker 4: these are the plays and you can't you don't have
- 34:23Speaker 4: time to think about it. You imagine McVay gets to
- 34:26Speaker 4: a point where he's looking at that play card going,
- 34:28Speaker 4: uh oh, this stuff I have here does not work,
- 34:31Speaker 4: you know, and what do you do at that point?
- 34:33Speaker 5: You can see some of the challenge that it presents.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Mark and Chatta says Fred. When you mentioned Patricia earlier
- 34:39Speaker 2: on the Edelman podcast, you mentioned he was really smart. However,
- 34:43Speaker 2: you forgot to say that we need to thank him. Please,
- 34:45Speaker 2: can you do the obligatory Patriots Nation, thank you Matt Patricia.
- 34:49Speaker 2: This night is true, that's true. Thank you. Matt Patricia
- 34:52Speaker 2: disrespected him.
- 34:53Speaker 4: You know, just thinking about it a little bit, like
- 34:55Speaker 4: do you put it a little bit on Sean McVeigh
- 34:57Speaker 4: for not being ready for that. I mean team that
- 35:00Speaker 4: has been in the Super Bowl the famously in thirty nine,
- 35:02Speaker 4: they come out in a four three this.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Especially know your opponent, you know, Bill Belichick is gonna you.
- 35:06Speaker 6: Know, taking Bill into consideration, which the points that you
- 35:11Speaker 6: guys made is one thousand percent right because Bill is
- 35:14Speaker 6: known for his versatility and.
- 35:16Speaker 7: Especially in a Super Bowl.
- 35:17Speaker 6: You know, but what kind of offense doesn't have a
- 35:20Speaker 6: like I play I can only it only works if
- 35:23Speaker 6: I know what they're going to be running.
- 35:25Speaker 7: Well, yes, a lot of that goes on McVeigh.
- 35:27Speaker 3: A lot of it though is you know, they they
- 35:29Speaker 3: turned the game into a drop back pass game, and
- 35:32Speaker 3: Jared Goff just wasn't ready for the for the bright light.
- 35:34Speaker 7: It's like, you know at the time, you.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Know, I think Jared Goff now probably would handle it
- 35:39Speaker 3: better now that he's more experienced. But same with McVeigh.
- 35:42Speaker 3: Like McVeagh was a really young coach in that Super
- 35:44Speaker 3: Bowl and he went up against Yoda and he just
- 35:47Speaker 3: got dominated.
- 35:48Speaker 6: And all that I would say is again a thousand
- 35:51Speaker 6: percent accurate in Belichick absolutely pants him.
- 35:53Speaker 7: Okay, can I go to my my dark negative side.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Sure, of course, that's why you hit.
- 35:59Speaker 6: Which people you know in front of I mean, you know,
- 36:02Speaker 6: there's a big, big pieces of that offense that didn't play.
- 36:06Speaker 7: That's true, like Todd Gurley.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Todd Gurley didn't play, Cooper Cup didn't play.
- 36:10Speaker 6: There was a big part of what McVeigh had in
- 36:12Speaker 6: his holster that he had.
- 36:13Speaker 7: To play without. With Bobby Freeze out, Belichick would have
- 36:16Speaker 7: been able to deal with that.
- 36:17Speaker 6: You know, So I'll talk out of both sides of
- 36:19Speaker 6: my mouth. I'm gonna I'm gonna give mcveay a little
- 36:22Speaker 6: bit of slack, sure, but Belichick would have handled it.
- 36:26Speaker 6: Belichick was without key pieces and a lot of different
- 36:28Speaker 6: big games over the years and was able to adapt
- 36:30Speaker 6: and figure out ways McVeigh didn't. And I do think
- 36:33Speaker 6: that's largely on McVeigh because you should have known that
- 36:36Speaker 6: Belichick wasn't just going to do one thing right right.
- 36:38Speaker 4: If I was a coach or a scout in that system,
- 36:41Speaker 4: like you would think someone would have just said, hey,
- 36:44Speaker 4: is there a chance that they come out and do
- 36:46Speaker 4: something totally different, because that's we have a.
- 36:48Speaker 5: Huge sample size.
- 36:49Speaker 4: These guys at that point would have gone to like
- 36:51Speaker 4: eight super Bowls, Like, there's a good chance they're going
- 36:54Speaker 4: to come out with a total curveball that we have
- 36:57Speaker 4: to be ready.
- 36:57Speaker 2: To handle on.
- 36:57Speaker 4: And maybe they were to some extent because I think
- 36:59Speaker 4: that ran offense it's predicated on staying on time and
- 37:03Speaker 4: you know, executing wide zone and then we play the
- 37:05Speaker 4: play action.
- 37:06Speaker 2: I mean, there's a whole.
- 37:07Speaker 5: Progression to what that offense wants to do. So I
- 37:10Speaker 5: just would think they'd be a.
- 37:11Speaker 6: Little bits Evans Point Golf wasn't ready.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they changed their offense a lot. You know,
- 37:17Speaker 3: they Stafford is obviously a different kind of quarterback, but
- 37:21Speaker 3: they are much more gap, you know, vertical run game. Now,
- 37:24Speaker 3: they play a lot more empty out of the shotgun,
- 37:26Speaker 3: and they don't use as much wide zone play action.
- 37:29Speaker 3: They still have that, but they don't use it as much.
- 37:31Speaker 3: But you know, because I have to defend my guy,
- 37:33Speaker 3: I or one of my guys. I think I don't
- 37:37Speaker 3: know how you could have predicted that they were going
- 37:38Speaker 3: to play a six to one, Like, I just don't
- 37:40Speaker 3: like that. That's not a regular front that you see
- 37:43Speaker 3: very often. It was a really unique thing. The Patriots
- 37:47Speaker 3: at the time are really uniquely equipped to play it.
- 37:50Speaker 3: Because of high tower, like in his versatility allowed them
- 37:54Speaker 3: to do it. So as much as I like the
- 37:56Speaker 3: zone stuff, maybe like they probably could have had an
- 37:59Speaker 3: idea that that was. But to come out in a
- 38:01Speaker 3: six to one tilt in the Super Bowl and you've
- 38:03Speaker 3: never done it before is like that's kind of like
- 38:06Speaker 3: all right, you know, but it would have been on
- 38:08Speaker 3: my mind though I halftime maybe like you know, call
- 38:11Speaker 3: power once.
- 38:12Speaker 5: You know, like but yeah, I don't know if you
- 38:13Speaker 5: would have landed on that.
- 38:14Speaker 4: But if I was going against that coach, even knowing
- 38:17Speaker 4: what I know is just a guy following the team,
- 38:19Speaker 4: it's like, be ready because there could be a crazy
- 38:21Speaker 4: curveball coming at you, you know, right to start this game.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I can just see Evan he's watching the Super Bowl
- 38:26Speaker 2: and he's got his jersey mics and he's like half
- 38:28Speaker 2: fights like they're running a six to one.
- 38:33Speaker 8: It was.
- 38:33Speaker 3: It was quite possibly one of the best Super Bowl
- 38:36Speaker 3: game plans of all time. And that is not hyperbally.
- 38:38Speaker 4: How did you feel that when you when you were
- 38:40Speaker 4: watching that happen live, Like, did you think that you did?
- 38:42Speaker 10: You just block of, Yeah, the impact was going to
- 38:46Speaker 10: be a little bit and I think the bigger thing
- 38:49Speaker 10: that I that I clocked in the moment was the quarters,
- 38:52Speaker 10: Like they were playing quarters, they're playing cover four and
- 38:56Speaker 10: they were buzzing, so they were rotating the guy into
- 38:58Speaker 10: cover three and they were kind of playing with Goff.
- 39:00Speaker 3: And McVeigh would communicate with Golf in the headset until
- 39:04Speaker 3: they shut the headset off, and he would actually like
- 39:07Speaker 3: play quarterback for Golf and you would say, they're in this,
- 39:10Speaker 3: they're in that, and then the Patriots.
- 39:11Speaker 7: Would change the picture on him. You figured out, yeah,
- 39:14Speaker 7: the next time and now you change it.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Now you figure it out. And just watching you know,
- 39:18Speaker 3: mccordy especially and Chung just like play the mind games
- 39:22Speaker 3: with Jared. Goff's head was in a pretzel, like you
- 39:24Speaker 3: know what, no idea it was, you know, would have.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Been fascinating is both at their heights of their powers.
- 39:30Speaker 2: To have Belichick coach against Brady, Like how would he
- 39:35Speaker 2: try to confuse Brady, you know, other than like rush
- 39:38Speaker 2: up the middle and that was kind of that was
- 39:40Speaker 2: kind of just kryptonite. But I'm just talking about scheme one,
- 39:43Speaker 2: you know, twenty one.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I have to go back, and you know,
- 39:47Speaker 3: I obviously wrote about the game, but I don't remember
- 39:48Speaker 3: exactly what they did. If I want, I want to
- 39:52Speaker 3: say they played a lot of I want to say that,
- 39:55Speaker 3: well it was raining. I want to say they played
- 39:57Speaker 3: a lot of double Robber, which is, you know something
- 39:59Speaker 3: they did lot more later on in Bill's career. So
- 40:02Speaker 3: drop eight double Robbert, So like two robbers sitting at
- 40:05Speaker 3: the sticks. Because Brady, they knew what was gonna love
- 40:08Speaker 3: throwing in cuts, you know, crossers, slants like things like that.
- 40:11Speaker 2: That was Brady after one year with a new team
- 40:13Speaker 2: and a new offensive corner. I'm talking about Brady having
- 40:16Speaker 2: had the same offense in the same offense for a
- 40:19Speaker 2: long time in Belichick at the height of it, Like,
- 40:21Speaker 2: how would that battle, you know, turn out? I think
- 40:24Speaker 2: that would have been cool. Eight five five past five
- 40:26Speaker 2: hundred is the Hotline podcast at Patriots dot Com. Is
- 40:30Speaker 2: the email We're getting a lot of emails. Of course,
- 40:32Speaker 2: we'll get to those phones are stacked up. We'll go
- 40:36Speaker 2: with Anthony in Seattle. What's up, Anthony? How those Red Sox?
- 40:40Speaker 4: Hey?
- 40:42Speaker 7: What's up?
- 40:43Speaker 12: Brand?
- 40:43Speaker 2: What good?
- 40:47Speaker 13: Hey?
- 40:48Speaker 12: Soh Yeah, I had to call it in today. You
- 40:50Speaker 12: got got I love the.
- 40:52Speaker 11: The off season topics, and so I got a couple
- 40:55Speaker 11: of them that you guys talked a little bit about
- 40:57Speaker 11: people saying uh of course instead of you're welcome, and
- 41:02Speaker 11: a couple more things. So I got two of them
- 41:03Speaker 11: and then I'll get off the I'll get off the phone.
- 41:05Speaker 11: But uh, the first one is this one bothered me
- 41:08Speaker 11: for a few years, is people that's saying sorry instead
- 41:12Speaker 11: of excuse me. Like it's one of those things like
- 41:15Speaker 11: I just it doesn't bother me as much these days,
- 41:18Speaker 11: but I always hear It's like you're you.
- 41:19Speaker 12: Go across paths with somebody in the hallway and you know,
- 41:22Speaker 12: you stop, you smile, and they've walked past you, and
- 41:24Speaker 12: they just say sorry, and it's like, why why do
- 41:27Speaker 12: you apologizing to me? I don't want to apology, just okay.
- 41:30Speaker 14: Say excuse me.
- 41:30Speaker 12: And it makes me almost like feel bad, like like
- 41:33Speaker 12: like how dare you walk past me? So that's one
- 41:36Speaker 12: and the other one is, uh, this one.
- 41:38Speaker 8: I actually just dealt with yesterday.
- 41:40Speaker 12: It's crosswalks.
- 41:40Speaker 8: It's crosswalks in general.
- 41:42Speaker 12: But when you get when you get to a crosswalk
- 41:44Speaker 12: and you stop, you see the pedestrians, so you stop
- 41:47Speaker 12: and to let them go. Now normally they just go,
- 41:49Speaker 12: but every once in a while, you get the one
- 41:51Speaker 12: who he's gonna wave you on. For some reason, he's
- 41:53Speaker 12: not ready to cross yet, maybe you're maybe there's no
- 41:56Speaker 12: car behind you, so he's like, I'll just let you
- 41:58Speaker 12: clear and then.
- 41:58Speaker 8: I'll walk whatever.
- 41:59Speaker 12: That's fine. I normally I prefer you just go, but okay,
- 42:02Speaker 12: you're waving me, I'll just go. What I hate is
- 42:06Speaker 12: when you stop for the guy to let him go.
- 42:08Speaker 12: He waves me on and lets me go. So I
- 42:10Speaker 12: decided to go. And as I'm passing, you're gonna step
- 42:15Speaker 12: off the curb and into the street like you're gonna
- 42:17Speaker 12: be mister cool. You're gonna cross behind my truck. And
- 42:19Speaker 12: by the way, I drive a commercial truck for for
- 42:21Speaker 12: a living, so it's all about safety for me. You're
- 42:24Speaker 12: gonna frost behind my truck, like within inches. We may
- 42:27Speaker 12: think you could reach out and tap the back of
- 42:28Speaker 12: my truck, but I don't want my moving vehicle within
- 42:31Speaker 12: inches of you. That's why I told you to go.
- 42:33Speaker 3: If you were gonna not wait, you could have just
- 42:36Speaker 3: went fair enough, get off the box.
- 42:40Speaker 12: Any cross walks when everybody stopped at the cross walk
- 42:42Speaker 12: on one side of the street and the guy on
- 42:45Speaker 12: the other side of the street keeps blowing through it
- 42:47Speaker 12: so nobody can go.
- 42:48Speaker 7: Because people walk.
- 42:50Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, good one.
- 42:53Speaker 6: That's a good love the amount of thought that went
- 42:55Speaker 6: into that. Anthey, that's a good one.
- 42:57Speaker 3: You can tell he drives a truck for a living
- 42:59Speaker 3: now because he's kind of traffic I.
- 43:01Speaker 6: Also love the way he's recounting the story. It really
- 43:03Speaker 6: it really bothers me and they, you know, and I
- 43:06Speaker 6: drive it.
- 43:06Speaker 7: You know, I drive a commercial truck. Bly like he
- 43:08Speaker 7: gets all like normal, just to explain I drive a
- 43:11Speaker 7: commercial truck.
- 43:11Speaker 6: B And then he goes, hey, man, you're gonna get
- 43:13Speaker 6: that close to my truck, like get clearly really bothers him.
- 43:17Speaker 3: I love it.
- 43:17Speaker 2: I don't blame him. I love that. Oh of course,
- 43:19Speaker 2: Well I saw somebody today.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Of course.
- 43:21Speaker 2: I'm going up four ninety five and uh this, you know,
- 43:25Speaker 2: uh go four ninety five north and I'm getting up
- 43:28Speaker 2: to where the ninety five exits are, so you know,
- 43:31Speaker 2: people are starting to merge. Right, this guy's all the
- 43:33Speaker 2: way in the left. He merges right in front of
- 43:37Speaker 2: a huge truck, like I mean, like a foot in
- 43:39Speaker 2: front of him. I'm like, you, imbecile, Like you think
- 43:43Speaker 2: these trucks could stop on a dime like a normal
- 43:45Speaker 2: car can like wait, wait until he's by you and
- 43:50Speaker 2: merge in front of it, like a normal car that
- 43:52Speaker 2: has a chance of stopping. Like so this, you know,
- 43:54Speaker 2: the truck driver obviously hit his horn.
- 43:57Speaker 5: Just just ridiculous when I see that kind of driving.
- 43:59Speaker 4: Always wondering those the people that are dying in car
- 44:01Speaker 4: crashes every day, like the people that cause it, or
- 44:04Speaker 4: just even like ninety five.
- 44:05Speaker 5: From Providence to Boston is a dragstrip.
- 44:07Speaker 4: I mean there are people Rhode Island plates no offense,
- 44:10Speaker 4: matt flying off like you know, weaving through and Rhode
- 44:14Speaker 4: Island people are.
- 44:14Speaker 2: The worst drivers, they really are, and it's because the
- 44:17Speaker 2: state's so small. They don't get enough.
- 44:19Speaker 7: You're literally called you just.
- 44:21Speaker 2: Walked on my joke. Get out of here. He stepped
- 44:28Speaker 2: on my joke. Anyway, all right, Nathan, should I set
- 44:32Speaker 2: you up so you can do it again? That's all right,
- 44:34Speaker 2: Nathan's gone, Nathan, Connecticut. What's up Nate?
- 44:38Speaker 15: Guys? So I just have a couple of quick things,
- 44:41Speaker 15: Well maybe I should say quick.
- 44:43Speaker 7: I hope it's going to be quick.
- 44:45Speaker 15: My first thing is this is a reoccurring topic, but
- 44:50Speaker 15: the walkout song in my opinion, and the Crazy Train
- 44:55Speaker 15: is perfect there, there doesn't need to be anything else,
- 44:59Speaker 15: perfect delated.
- 45:00Speaker 11: I was at the Next News.
- 45:02Speaker 15: Game where Drake Nate as first ever actual start. That
- 45:08Speaker 15: stuff like fired me up just to see some good football,
- 45:11Speaker 15: and I did. I did see good football.
- 45:13Speaker 7: Sorry, sorry we disappointed you.
- 45:15Speaker 2: Yeah, so how old are you, Nate, Nate, how old
- 45:19Speaker 2: are you? You're fourteen?
- 45:22Speaker 7: Just harm like middle school.
- 45:25Speaker 2: Like, it's surprising to me that at fourteen you're you're
- 45:29Speaker 2: cool with sticking with what they're doing. So that's interesting.
- 45:33Speaker 15: Yeah, I like very like, I like verys like classic
- 45:36Speaker 15: rock music.
- 45:37Speaker 7: But I think crazy trains a good walkout.
- 45:39Speaker 15: So yeah, it's a great walkout.
- 45:42Speaker 2: So it was. I think I think it's time for change,
- 45:46Speaker 2: though I do.
- 45:47Speaker 7: I mean, I think you should be exploring all our.
- 45:50Speaker 8: I'm going to disagree because okay, well, I like it
- 45:56Speaker 8: the way it is.
- 45:57Speaker 15: It gives me for the kind of buzz and I
- 45:59Speaker 15: like away. I like the way from it goes from
- 46:02Speaker 15: over you.
- 46:03Speaker 8: It's a crazy training.
- 46:04Speaker 15: It's a good transition.
- 46:05Speaker 3: I like, Nate.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that's goods an old soul, so so you're a
- 46:09Speaker 2: traditional and because that was so good, you have you
- 46:12Speaker 2: wanted to say one other thing?
- 46:14Speaker 7: Or is that it's a tough phone. So should I
- 46:18Speaker 7: got a flip phone.
- 46:21Speaker 15: Or joint practice this year because I went to a
- 46:25Speaker 15: joint practice of the people all last year.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Sorry again, Yeah, a lot of bad. The joint practice
- 46:31Speaker 2: is during training camp, so you can best of both worlds.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Go go to the joint practice. Your phone stinks, Thanks, Nate,
- 46:38Speaker 2: You're great. Yeah, Nate's an old soul. He's got a
- 46:41Speaker 2: flip phone.
- 46:41Speaker 7: As Paul said, Yeah, the phone was that was tough phone.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Yeah, Patty's in Agam. What's up Patty?
- 46:49Speaker 13: Hey, good afternoon.
- 46:50Speaker 4: Everyone, Hey, better phone, Good afternoon.
- 46:53Speaker 13: So a little caller on Color Prime and all end
- 46:56Speaker 13: with a question. I gotta I'm not doing this because
- 46:59Speaker 13: he's the league target, but I got a call out
- 47:01Speaker 13: Christian at La. He had said before a couple of
- 47:05Speaker 13: times that he's been a fan since nineteen seventy eight, right,
- 47:09Speaker 13: And he also said last week that his thirtieth high
- 47:13Speaker 13: school reunion was coming up and he was skipping out
- 47:15Speaker 13: on it. Now me, I graduated. My thirtieth reunion was
- 47:20Speaker 13: last year, and I became a fan of nineteen eighty
- 47:24Speaker 13: five at the age of nine years old, So unless
- 47:27Speaker 13: like unless he graduated like at twenty seven or twenty eight,
- 47:31Speaker 13: which is possible. I'm just saying the mass doesn't add up. Christian,
- 47:34Speaker 13: I'm pom focused on it, okay. And my question is,
- 47:39Speaker 13: do you guys think I have this thought that possibly
- 47:43Speaker 13: I thought before like the OTAs and training camp started
- 47:48Speaker 13: or the mini camp started, that Cole's strange might be
- 47:51Speaker 13: on the outside looking in because of his injury history
- 47:53Speaker 13: and inconsistency. But I really think that he possibly has
- 47:58Speaker 13: the inside track and the left guard spot, and I
- 48:00Speaker 13: think he is going to get a roster spots just
- 48:02Speaker 13: because he does have the versatility to play center. And
- 48:05Speaker 13: I know you guys were talking about, you know, him
- 48:08Speaker 13: playing both guard spots at the Okas, and I just
- 48:10Speaker 13: wanted to get on that.
- 48:12Speaker 8: I'll take it off there.
- 48:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree. I think he does have an inside
- 48:15Speaker 2: track at left guy.
- 48:16Speaker 3: It might be by default, but there's really not right now.
- 48:21Speaker 3: It's his job to lose. That's how I inside track
- 48:24Speaker 3: has dropped to lose. Kind of the same thing.
- 48:26Speaker 4: But yeah, yep, okay, I might have flipped Layton Robinson
- 48:30Speaker 4: and him going in.
- 48:31Speaker 6: I've just seen a lot of guys I haven't seen it,
- 48:34Speaker 6: just well Tyresse Robinson's yeah right, he got a so.
- 48:38Speaker 7: And I don't know what they think.
- 48:40Speaker 6: I think this is probably just thrown a lot of
- 48:42Speaker 6: bodies out there and seen as many combinations as they can,
- 48:44Speaker 6: which I think makes some sense, but it's not I
- 48:46Speaker 6: don't know if I would be able to identify a
- 48:48Speaker 6: guy who I thought had the inside track based on
- 48:50Speaker 6: what I saw in the spring.
- 48:51Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, Mini camp. It was definitely a lot
- 48:53Speaker 3: of cold, strange, but Wes Schweitzer was had his situation,
- 48:56Speaker 3: tyros Robinson had his situation, So would that have been
- 48:59Speaker 3: different And if one of those guys was participating maybe,
- 49:03Speaker 3: But I'd say saying he has the inside track is
- 49:06Speaker 3: probably a fair way to put it. But again, it's
- 49:10Speaker 3: not a the worst position to have a problem at.
- 49:13Speaker 3: Out of all the positions. It's better, you know, left
- 49:15Speaker 3: guard is at least somewhat tolerable. But so one spot
- 49:19Speaker 3: where I'm like, I'm not one hundred percent sure they
- 49:21Speaker 3: have a true NFL starter at that spot.
- 49:23Speaker 6: I would say that if they think he's going to
- 49:25Speaker 6: be the starter, then there's value there. Obviously, I'm not
- 49:29Speaker 6: sure how much his ability to play a little center,
- 49:32Speaker 6: which by the way, did not go well this spring.
- 49:36Speaker 6: The snaps were an issue when he was snapping the
- 49:38Speaker 6: ball in the spring. That was early in OTAs. But
- 49:41Speaker 6: now they you know, they drafted a center. I think
- 49:45Speaker 6: they have other options at center. If I would, I
- 49:48Speaker 6: would doubt that the deciding factor is going to that's
- 49:50Speaker 6: going to play in his favor. And now if they
- 49:53Speaker 6: get to an active situation in a game, and maybe
- 49:56Speaker 6: you know, Jared Wilson isn't active for a game and
- 50:00Speaker 6: Cole Strange is playing left guard and Derek Bradbury goes down,
- 50:04Speaker 6: maybe you have City Sow or Tyree's somebody to play guard,
- 50:09Speaker 6: but you don't have anybody to play center. Maybe Strange
- 50:12Speaker 6: moves over on a pinch, but I'm not necessarily sure
- 50:14Speaker 6: that's worth The rosters.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Think Jared Wilson is a big X factor. He's been
- 50:17Speaker 4: rehabbing and getting back into shape. But he could be
- 50:20Speaker 4: in the mix there as well. And I think he
- 50:21Speaker 4: could be in the mix of center too.
- 50:23Speaker 3: I'm waiting for that. And you know, they'd also gave
- 50:26Speaker 3: some opportunities to Kayden Wallace to play guard in the spring,
- 50:30Speaker 3: and that was something that a lot of people thought
- 50:32Speaker 3: maybe going into the draft that he was eventually going
- 50:35Speaker 3: to be a long term guard in the NFL. So
- 50:38Speaker 3: maybe between those two guys, like I think there might
- 50:41Speaker 3: be a little bit more upside. You kind of know
- 50:42Speaker 3: what you have with Cole Strange, but maybe one of
- 50:45Speaker 3: those younger players has got a little bit more.
- 50:49Speaker 2: Mike, and Braintree has a problem with the last caller.
- 50:51Speaker 2: What's up, Mike, Hey, guys, big fan of the show.
- 50:55Speaker 16: I love your take on everything, but I got a
- 50:57Speaker 16: real problem with that guy that was saying that he
- 51:00Speaker 16: lets people go in traffic like pedestrians. Okay, he doesn't
- 51:04Speaker 16: understand is that I'm a pedestrian.
- 51:06Speaker 8: I'm on the point.
- 51:07Speaker 16: I'm letting you go because God forbids a gatorade bottom
- 51:11Speaker 16: or something rolls underneath your brake pedal. I'm doomed if
- 51:14Speaker 16: I go in front of you. I'm I think that
- 51:16Speaker 16: should be my call to make. I think it's okay
- 51:20Speaker 16: to let you go. I'm not powery anyway.
- 51:22Speaker 2: No, he was cool with that. He just he was
- 51:25Speaker 2: okay with you letting him go. He just doesn't like it.
- 51:28Speaker 2: After you let him go, then you immediately walk into
- 51:31Speaker 2: traffic right behind him. He doesn't like that.
- 51:35Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm not sure why.
- 51:36Speaker 16: Timing after time the issue with the traffic. Maybe I
- 51:39Speaker 16: see it coming. I know how I can get through
- 51:41Speaker 16: this safely without causing anyone to even hitch their brake pedal.
- 51:44Speaker 16: I just think that should be the pedestrians call it
- 51:47Speaker 16: got me a little round up calling you guys.
- 51:50Speaker 17: All right, I like it, Mike, allbuttal as well, Okay,
- 51:54Speaker 17: and I will say that that situation, there's the pedestrian
- 51:59Speaker 17: cars and they're letting you go, but like I don't
- 52:02Speaker 17: want to rush across the street.
- 52:03Speaker 7: Just go, just go want I want to, you know,
- 52:06Speaker 7: walk in my face. I'm you know, I'm with him.
- 52:08Speaker 2: I'm a little late, I've done that.
- 52:09Speaker 7: Sure, you just go ahead.
- 52:11Speaker 5: It is funny though, the communication.
- 52:12Speaker 4: It's the same thing as like when you pass someone
- 52:14Speaker 4: in the hallway or someone's holding the door, that like
- 52:16Speaker 4: moment of like I'm good, I'm good, I'm good, Like
- 52:19Speaker 4: you know, you don't want them to get mad at you,
- 52:20Speaker 4: but you're trying to like communicate, and.
- 52:21Speaker 6: I don't, like, I don't want to rush across because
- 52:24Speaker 6: now I'm taking up your time. So I feel, you know,
- 52:27Speaker 6: pressure you perceived or not to get what if.
- 52:30Speaker 3: We have mixed signals and you think you're going and
- 52:32Speaker 3: I think I'm going and then not.

- 55:15Speaker 2: We'll read it here. Chris.
- 55:16Speaker 19: Let's get into it all right. Tom Brady statue opening traditions.
- 55:21Speaker 19: I love the idea of the Tom Brady statue, but
- 55:23Speaker 19: aside from the ringing of the lighthouse, we need to
- 55:25Speaker 19: have more home game opening traditions. Maybe the players touching
- 55:28Speaker 19: a gold statue of Pat the Patriot or Billy Sullivan.
- 55:30Speaker 2: And walking out of the tunnel. Matthew from Arizona.
- 55:33Speaker 1: I kind of like the the lighthouse. It's its own,
- 55:35Speaker 1: like niche thing.
- 55:36Speaker 20: I mean, Julett is known for the lighthouse, and I
- 55:39Speaker 20: think the bell kind of gives it a good vibe,
- 55:41Speaker 20: a good atmosphere.
- 55:42Speaker 19: Yeah, I thought it was coulda be a bigger bell.
- 55:44Speaker 19: Maybe I would have liked like the horn, you know,
- 55:46Speaker 19: maybe the crank horn.
- 55:47Speaker 1: You don't need a horn, right though, what I was
- 55:49Speaker 1: like a fog horn.
- 55:50Speaker 19: What I do wish they did is I wish they
- 55:53Speaker 19: did a new England style lighthouse, red and white like
- 55:56Speaker 19: made it look like an actual lighthouse.
- 55:58Speaker 2: And also the renderings they may it looked a little bigger.
- 56:01Speaker 2: I mean it is big.
- 56:04Speaker 1: Although you hate heights when you go up, they keep
- 56:06Speaker 1: sending me up there. I mean it's still big.
- 56:08Speaker 2: But I like the bell. It's just listen. Winning solves everything.
- 56:11Speaker 2: I mean, we've I.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Think there's definitely more energy with a win, and I
- 56:15Speaker 1: think that would also entail. Like the bell.
- 56:18Speaker 19: We need to we need to get some of the
- 56:19Speaker 19: big dogs back. We had Tom, we had von Jovi
- 56:21Speaker 19: ringing the bell, but we need Where's big Poppy, Jason Tatum,
- 56:24Speaker 19: let's get everybody all right. Thanks Matthew from Arizona walking music.
- 56:31Speaker 19: Just another suggestion, JT. Money high low would be good.
- 56:35Speaker 2: You weren't here. I was with Alex. I said, let's
- 56:37Speaker 2: get some Lincoln Park in the mix.
- 56:38Speaker 1: A little new divide.
- 56:41Speaker 2: Yeah, numb slash encore.
- 56:43Speaker 1: Till the end or in the end, in the end,
- 56:45Speaker 1: in the end. That's on me.
- 56:46Speaker 19: Sorryret here, Yeah, yeah, all right, I'm like in trouble
- 56:51Speaker 19: for this one. Papa bona dude made to make a
- 56:54Speaker 19: guest feel at ease comfortable. They tell people, hey, come on,
- 56:57Speaker 19: come on in and sit down. Papa, I'm not gonna
- 56:59Speaker 19: say it again, so relax it away and make yourself
- 57:01Speaker 19: a home.
- 57:02Speaker 2: No pressure.
- 57:02Speaker 19: So I assume that's something in relation to the show
- 57:04Speaker 19: that was from Dinner Plates. You know, I guess Fredie
- 57:08Speaker 19: he kind of rushes out some of the guests and stuff.
- 57:10Speaker 19: So he comes sit down, spot one, sit your touchdown, relaxing.
- 57:18Speaker 7: All right?
- 57:19Speaker 1: What else we got?
- 57:20Speaker 2: Who's a long one? High school dating? And Tom Brady?
- 57:23Speaker 19: Good APU crew, Your reflections on your high school years
- 57:26Speaker 19: were very illuminating. Fred apparently dated then dumped dancing a
- 57:30Speaker 19: lane from Seinfeld. Duce could have dated Willy Wonka's daughter
- 57:33Speaker 19: but didn't. Matt mentioned he got dragged from school by
- 57:36Speaker 19: his mom or dragged from school by his mom, but
- 57:38Speaker 19: didn't say what the incident was. Given Matt's chosen career
- 57:41Speaker 19: and the Marines, did it involve certain skills for that
- 57:44Speaker 19: future service man.
- 57:45Speaker 2: I'll let you answer that one.
- 57:47Speaker 19: Regarding the call about Brady not being Brady until three
- 57:50Speaker 19: or four years into his career, I always thought Brady's
- 57:52Speaker 19: big leap in new offensive juggernaut more to do a
- 57:54Speaker 19: change in philosophy rather than Brady's individual development.
- 57:57Speaker 2: Brady led the league in tds in.
- 57:58Speaker 19: His second season, so it's not like lacked the talent
- 58:00Speaker 19: to be an offensive leader. My impression was at Belichick
- 58:03Speaker 19: wanted more of a conservative, conservative, low risk offense, strap
- 58:06Speaker 19: the opponent down with defense, don't turn the ball over.
- 58:08Speaker 19: When Poleon had changes made in that lead in the
- 58:11Speaker 19: league that favored the offense in general, and the Patriots
- 58:14Speaker 19: just missed making Super Bowl forty one with an offense
- 58:16Speaker 19: that featured Vershee caledwell. The philosophy switch and the offense
- 58:20Speaker 19: opened up with the additions prior to two thousand and seven.
- 58:22Speaker 2: What say you, cheers Dan in Virginia in Michigan.
- 58:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, well, you can talk about your high
- 58:28Speaker 1: school dating life.
- 58:29Speaker 16: I was it.
- 58:29Speaker 2: It was decent.
- 58:30Speaker 1: Yeah was there right?
- 58:30Speaker 2: Yeah? I dabble boarding school, you know. Now, Yeah, sneak
- 58:34Speaker 2: into the dorms and.
- 58:36Speaker 1: You get to Brady.
- 58:37Speaker 20: Yeah, the stuff, Yeah, the more importance of his Brady,
- 58:41Speaker 20: I would definitely say he I think Belichick wanted to
- 58:44Speaker 20: morph him into something that you can become a game general,
- 58:48Speaker 20: and I think you had to kind of start small
- 58:51Speaker 20: with him to then get bigger. And I think that's
- 58:53Speaker 20: how it works with a lot of a lot of
- 58:54Speaker 20: these quarterbacks in the league nowadays, especially, And I'm curious
- 58:58Speaker 20: kind of how.
- 58:59Speaker 1: McDaniels will do that with Drake.
- 59:01Speaker 3: Drake.
- 59:02Speaker 20: Yeah, he's gonna incorporate it with Drake because obviously every
- 59:05Speaker 20: quarterback is different. Every quarterback has different skill sets. And
- 59:07Speaker 20: I mean we know Brady is a pocket presence and
- 59:10Speaker 20: kind of having a lot of composure when he's under pressure.
- 59:12Speaker 20: So you know, I'm curious what Drake he's gonna end
- 59:16Speaker 20: up doing this year. I think I do think I
- 59:19Speaker 20: agree with that Brady take a lot.
- 59:21Speaker 19: I mean the first year, I mean, the defense was
- 59:23Speaker 19: so good, so wow, would you not. I mean we
- 59:25Speaker 19: always show the highlight of Brady's first start, It was
- 59:27Speaker 19: all the defense.
- 59:28Speaker 2: He just yes, that's not turned the ball over. Yeah,
- 59:31Speaker 2: tell you what you do.
- 59:32Speaker 19: But I mean, for me, because I was, like, you know,
- 59:34Speaker 19: growing up during that time, it was really like three
- 59:36Speaker 19: oh four where you're like he's him.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Yeah, then you got the whole second half of his career.
- 59:41Speaker 1: He also just had the swagger at that point too.
- 59:43Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 59:43Speaker 1: YouTube super Bowls under your belt and you're like, I'm
- 59:46Speaker 1: already I mean.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Growing up going into Sundays. I was like, oh, that's
- 59:49Speaker 2: a win. Yeah, that's a win.
- 59:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 59:51Speaker 2: But Chris, there's a good little show right here. Yeah, shuys.
- 59:53Speaker 19: Once again, if your email doesn't get read on the
- 59:55Speaker 19: show's end to the podcast at Patriots dot com, we'll
- 59:57Speaker 19: read it here.
- 59:58Speaker 2: On p U Extra. Let's get back to Patritsonnfield.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: And now great moments in.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: History. I was told that I said carry on wrong.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: I said carry on. It's carry on, one word, like
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: like like the bag. It's a carry on, carry on, cape,
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: calm and carry on. It's the answer to the read
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: before we get in trouble. Okay, only liquids allowed, blood,
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: sweat and tears. Catch carry on December thirteenth, only on Netflix.
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: Okay, you know these things intrigued me.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: So a carry on that you would carry on to
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: an airplane is pronounced differently than carry on.
- 1:00:41Speaker 7: Yeah, carry on, So by carry Paul, I don't see
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: carry on, I carry on my going to bring your
- 1:00:48Speaker 7: carry on.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: I feel like I carry on.
- 1:00:50Speaker 7: I feel like I'm saying.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: You just said was wrong. But Paul, you just said
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: that's not You didn't use it as a now use
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: it as a verb. You said, I carry on my bag.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: That's not what it is.
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: It's a carry on, my bag. It's my carry on.
- 1:01:04Speaker 7: It's not my carry on. It's it's my carry on,
- 1:01:07Speaker 7: my carry on bag, my carry on bag.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: Yeah. But but when you say, but when you say
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: carry on, I'm not changing carry on, carry on, carry on,
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: carry on the conversation.
- 1:01:17Speaker 7: It's my carry on back. It's I'm saying it the
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: exact putting.
- 1:01:22Speaker 12: The carrier, the on, carry on.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: It's different. Larry listen, carry listen, carry on. Carry You
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: put the emphasis on on when it's a verb on,
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: okay on.
- 1:01:33Speaker 7: I don't, but you do.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: You just don't.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: You want to admit it, but you do.
- 1:01:37Speaker 7: I'm you're just being stubborn the whole thing. Get that
- 1:01:40Speaker 7: hood I mean you've got that hood shirt.
- 1:01:41Speaker 6: And that's why it's getting being stubborn, That's why it's
- 1:01:44Speaker 6: getting under your skin.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: That's another great moment. From all right back here and
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: Patriots Unfiltered an one?
- 1:01:52Speaker 7: You won?
- 1:01:53Speaker 13: That's it?
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: Well, it's a good one.
- 1:01:54Speaker 7: You were right? What was I there's a there's a
- 1:01:57Speaker 7: slight difference.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: How do you emphasize carry on and carry on the
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: biggest thing? Yeah, the biggest one.
- 1:02:05Speaker 6: Sometimes when I hear them back, I'm like, that was
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: a ridiculous semantics argument in friend was right?
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Eight five past five hundred is the is the hotline
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: podcast at patriots dot com? Is the email address you
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: want to subscribe to the newsletter? Do it by going
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: to Patriots dot com slash pu newsletter Connor and gainstt
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: slash Barnstables certainly did. He said he's on the cave
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: for Father's Day, going to the high ENDUS car show. Nice, oh,
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: happened to be in Sandwich. Ended up going to Treehouse Brewing,
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: which was amazing. Then followed that up by taking Fred's
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: recommendation from the newsletter and went to Seafood Sam's and
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: got the fried chicken. Everyone else got seafood and gave
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: me a hard time. I told him I'm following Fred
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: Kersh's orders. We then proceeded onto the Shipwreck for ice cream.
- 1:02:49Speaker 7: Did you then get a speed Queen Washington.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: PS. Paul, you are the man. So my question is, well, Connor,
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: you didn't give me.
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: The review on the on the show, what would I
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: figure you had a term for what the chick and
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: would do for you?
- 1:03:01Speaker 7: It was decaded, decadent.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: It was decaded.
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: Yeah, like after you eat it's like super fried. Did
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: I just eat that sandwich?
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: I mean it's real fried chicken.
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: I don't know a srandwich.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: No, it's off the bone. It's legit a sandwich thing
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: for you young kids, fried chicken, eat it with your hands.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: You're not at the bone. Sandwiches, what do you do?
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: How do you eat sandwiching? Now with a chicken sandwich?
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: What's wrong with a sandwich?
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: I agreed, chicken sandwiches have gotten out of control, But
- 1:03:30Speaker 6: what is wrong with the sandwich in general?
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Nothing's wrong with.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: Well apparently only as kids eat the snow.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: But when I say, when I say it's fried chicken,
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: that's not a sandwich. It's chicken off the bone.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: But you said you eat it with your hands. But
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: how do you eat a sandwich?
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: Eat it with your hands? So it's not it could
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: be a fried chicken sandwich. I admit, but when something
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: when I'm talking about fried chicken, I'm talking about real
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: fried chicken.
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: Fair enough my position kind of.
- 1:03:59Speaker 6: They can you got that right, but there are I
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: think that the the advent of the fast food chicken
- 1:04:06Speaker 6: sandwich place like this, seventy five different versions.
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: Now now, yeah, like everybody had to happen, you know,
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: Chick fil A, we.
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: Just need to chick can't.
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: Like you know, I think this all started because we
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: all decided at some point that red meat was the devil. So, like,
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: I don't know who you people are eating a lot
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: of red meat.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Is not eat anything that bleeds the blood at one time.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: That's not It's not the best for you. So everybody
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: started pivoting from burgers to chicken fried chicken because it's healthier.
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: And then now we have everybody has chicken.
- 1:04:40Speaker 7: Fried chicken because it's healthier. I didn't say that.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: I just said that was well, the people that get
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: fried chicken and they peel off the skin, It's like,
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: oh boy, what do you think just get the best
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: part is the skin.
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: I got to get back to Blondiees. We went there
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: that the new Barba you did?
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: Yeah that, Sorry, I thought I told you.
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: I thought I thought I mentioned it.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: No, you real.
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: We kind of under ordered though.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: The kids, the kids that never have barbecue before. And
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: I have a kids who are fifteen.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: And so this is a new place down the streets,
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: right down the street on one.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: What kind of culture, dad, are you?
- 1:05:09Speaker 8: No?
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: I know, well, I mean not a great one because
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: they don't eat anything other than like that's but we
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: got had a brisket toast because kids inhaled the brisket
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: and they were like, we're going to go back up
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: and or they have ribs.
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: They got ribs.
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: But we just we started light, you know, we were like,
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: let's just get you know, a couple of orders of brisket,
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: see how it goes.
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: And it was mad at them for not getting ribs.
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: Yep, yeah that's now and now I gotta get back.
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: I'm a brisket guy.
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: Thought they'd be intimidating bones.
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: Well, there's a difference between barbecue brisket and then Jewish brisket.
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: Two different things, really, yeah, but both good.
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: Yeah, it's hard to mess up with brisket. Yeah, well, corny,
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: so the place is good, two thumbs up. We might
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: have to So this is the old red wing the
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: old Red Wing might have to order the counter.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: And are they like smoking the ribs behind it right
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: out there?
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: It Every morning when I.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Drive, I gotta try to go over there for a
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: long one.
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, we could do that.
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: We might have to work on Wednesday.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes when you have a light afternoon because the

- 1:08:22Speaker 6: I'm like one of those washed up soap opera stars.
- 1:08:25Speaker 6: You know, sometimes you need an ego boost.
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: Is harber shop.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: Roy wants to talk about Forge and Foxborough the documentary
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: We see love the first episode that covered up through
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: the draft. Assuming O t As and Camp is next.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: What's coming next? Well, you'll have to wait and see.
- 1:08:48Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: He also wants to know.
- 1:08:49Speaker 7: What a good bet though, But that's probably a good
- 1:08:52Speaker 7: Beth though.
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: What what type of coverage do you have planned for
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: joint practices against the commanders and vikings? Well, I can
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: tell you when the commanders are here, will certainly be
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: live for that, and we'll have the cameras on as
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: long as we can, as long as they let us,
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: as long as they let us, So.
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: It's a great time. Come down here, though, you know
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: what you do, Come down here and then put the
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: radio on.
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: For the start of practice, you listen to one will
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: set it up for you and then we'll all enjoy
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: it together.
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: A lot of people on on on the Twitter sphere,
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: on the X machine are asking about Forge Fred. They
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: want to know when the next one is dropping. It's
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: a lot of some confusion about, you know, the release
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: schedule and things like that.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: And well, we've we haven't told anyone anything about when
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: it's coming out, but it's coming soon.
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: I can tell you that if the last one covered
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: to the draft, this one might cover from the drafts
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: until now.
- 1:09:41Speaker 6: You knows. In Mini caamp I go. You know, it's
- 1:09:43Speaker 6: probably a pretty good bag. You'll see some of that stuff.
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: Yeah, some people like were like I thought it was weekly.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: I was like, what were showed weekly? Wes?
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Dave wants to know, Deuce, have you had any
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: luck dealing with the Japanese not weed. My parents have
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: some and they've been cutting it down, which apparently doesn't
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: do much.
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: Yeah, So you just have to dedicate yourself to it
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: and be ready to clean it out from the areas
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: you don't want it, like get near your septic system
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: or any of those stuff. But I've made peace with it,
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: and when I first moved in and I realized what
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: it was and how quickly it spreads like bamboo.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: I was like, oh, this is bad.
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: But you learn how to trim it back, and I
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: think if you pull it at certain times it's better
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: because it gets hard to get rid of it once
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: it gets hard and then it loses its leaves and
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: it's filled with seeds and you've got you know, hard
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: bamboo stocks. It's easier when it's I just take one
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: of those like things, like it's like a lopper maybe shit,
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: you just right through it, so that looks like bamboo Japan.
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: Every every it just grows.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: Does It's unbelievable. It's so easy to knock down, Like
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: it's like killing zombies, like they're really easy to kill.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: But there's millions.
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: When you start to pull the roots out, you know,
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: you know what I mean, hit them in the branch.
- 1:10:55Speaker 7: You see the root, how deep the roots go.
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: And then the different nodules off those nodules going off
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: of it. I mean, the thing spreads like wildfire. So
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: he just you know, you have to keep it cut back.
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: But I haven't not too much of a problem. I mean,
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: it all dies in the winter.
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: But when I was in LA we had actual break
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: most soft Well yeah, that stuff too, is it rows
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: up and it shoots through the I mean it'll ruin
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: your whole yard, the bamboo and the not weed if
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: you're not careful with at all.
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: Yep. Let's see Caesar from Brazil and he's a football player. Hey,
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: how confident are we with Drake May and how does
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: that compare with our previous experience with Mac Jones's second year.
- 1:11:34Speaker 7: I'm a lot more confident that Jones.
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: I'm a lot more confident. I think the questions are
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: real though that I mean, he has to prove it.
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: But you feel good that we said a lot last year.
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: He's not going to be athletically limited.
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: There isn't always going to be something that Drake May
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: has to work around physically. He's got all the gifts
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: that he needs to do to play in this league.
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: But will he be again My big question this year?
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: Is he clutch when the game is on the line.
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: Is he at his best?
- 1:11:59Speaker 6: You know?
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: Or is he the guy that thres interceptions and can't
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: quite get the team over the hump.
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: That's that's what I hope we'll learn about Drake May.
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: I hope I hope we learn the positive that he
- 1:12:07Speaker 5: is able to do it. But he's got all the
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: tools in the toolbox. That's reassuring to know that Max.
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: Jones, you're hoping he was going to be really a
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: good enough game manager, but Drake May he could really
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: elevate talent. Like I think that's why it makes you
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: feel more optimistic. I don't know if it's necessarily that
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: what he did last year was so much better than
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: what Mac did his real the year, but just you
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: see the tools and you see, like Deuce is saying,
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: and Drake May could be an elevator of talent, whereas
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: Mac Jones was always going to be well along for
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: a ride.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: I mean, after Max first year, we went into year
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: two at least I did thinking is there anything else?
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: Is there anything else he can do? This year? We
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: go in with Drake knowing this guy can do a lot,
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: but we're hoping he can eliminate the mistakes.
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I've just been so impressed with his ability to
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: throw the deep ball that to me is just really
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: stood out.
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: Uniquely of my time.
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: Granted limited here with Brady for one season, but from
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: those other Mac just he's got a downfield accuracy gift
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: that and he's not afraid to do it.
- 1:13:06Speaker 5: I mean, we saw a lot with Booty last.
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: Year, and I hope he continues to make those big plays.
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: Those are so vital to keeping pick.
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: Kylon Pembroke rights. And I've been listening to old Pus
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: out of boredom, and I realized something that I've been
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: guilty as I've been guilty as well. The past two years.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: We've taken solid Week one performances as a sign of
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: things turning around to be better, and I want to
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: warn against that we won't really figure out how good
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: this team is until the first four games of the
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: season are played. In my opinion, what do you guys think?
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: I might even be longer than four yous.
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: I just want the record to show that Week one
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: against Philly two years ago, I got killed because I
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: said that there was issues with that game tape that
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: people didn't want to admit because they looked at the
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: box score, said that Mac Jolling threw for like three
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: hundred yards and was like, we're good.
- 1:13:53Speaker 6: I'm going to tell you that I never expressed optimism
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: off of that Week one win.
- 1:13:58Speaker 7: Last year.
- 1:13:58Speaker 6: I don't remember as much about how I felt after
- 1:14:02Speaker 6: the Philly game. But the Cincinnati game, I think Mike
- 1:14:05Speaker 6: and I spent a good portion of the postgame show
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: saying that kind of style is not sustainable, Like you
- 1:14:12Speaker 6: can't just run the ball into a brick wall and
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: hope you're running back breaks twenty seven tackles every play
- 1:14:16Speaker 6: and then you squeak out a win because the other
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: team was asleep.
- 1:14:19Speaker 7: For sixty minutes. Yeah right, you remember that, I do.
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: But I would still say that as tepid as things
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: were in camp, like it was a little encouraging, like
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: they somehow found a way to win.
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: So you're kind of lying yourself a little.
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: Bit, like to the fact that you win.
- 1:14:35Speaker 7: But it was obviously the most important thing.
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: But we were you know, Stevenson breaking tackles in the backfield,
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: the timely turnovers, with Marcus Jones having that one pop
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: right up into his hands to take a score off
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: the board.
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: You know, it was right. We all said, that's a
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: tough way to live, but we were hoping that they
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: realized that and they were gonna winch And I do
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: think that.
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: They played well that day, Oh yeah, they played clean,
- 1:14:57Speaker 6: But Cincinnati was very much complicit in their demise.
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: I don't know if they played a while, they played
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: clean like they.
- 1:15:04Speaker 7: I think that that team.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: Played about as well as Cable exactly. Christ and Kolfax California.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: We should talk about a little bit about it. He
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: wants to know what everyone's take on the Raphael Devers
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: situation is.
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: I mean, we should talk a little bit about it.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: No, we should. I mean, listen, but it's Boston, and.
- 1:15:22Speaker 6: I have no problem with trading Devors. I have no
- 1:15:24Speaker 6: you know, I'm not a big sacred cows guy. I
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: just I hate the return they got, and I hate
- 1:15:29Speaker 6: the reasons why they made the trade.
- 1:15:31Speaker 7: Yeah, dumping salary.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Well you're assuming that's why they made the trade.
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: They refuted, but I have a track record, I know.
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: But they refuted that.
- 1:15:39Speaker 8: No, I know.
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: Yeah, so yeah, I think it's an asset management issue,
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: like they whether it's how we got here to the
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: point that he had to be traded, or just what
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: they got in return. To Paul's point, either way, you're
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: not maximizing the last.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: Let me ask you a question. If from the get
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: go they said, hey, we're bringing in Bregman, can you play?
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: Can you be dh He was like, yep, whatever, you
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: need oh costas is her, can you play? And he
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: was like, yep, I'll do whatever you want. If he
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: had been a team player from the get do you
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: think they would have traded him? Yep?
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: I don't, But I think that I think the the
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: way that we got here was of their own doing
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: because they didn't do that. They signed Alex Bregman, they
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: showed up the spring training.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: If they had done everything right and he was a
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: team player, would they have traded him?
- 1:16:27Speaker 8: No?
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: I don't think so. But I think that the bigger issue,
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: And this is what stood out to me. I watched
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: the whole Zoom thing last night. The thing that stood
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: out to me that I feel like isn't being talked
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: about enough is Craig Breslo admitting that he mishandled the
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: communication with Rapie.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: He did.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: He came out and he admitted that, yeah, he said
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: that is that's that's not good general managing. Like that's
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: just not acceptable, Like you cost the Red Sox for
- 1:16:53Speaker 3: Rafael Devers like you just said you did, Like you
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: literally cost them a star player, Like that's unacceptable. And
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: if they had just gone to him and they had
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: said I was talking to Dan Roach about this before
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: the show, and he was in today and he said,
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: if they sat him down and they said, we need
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: a right handed bat, Alex Bregman's available. This makes the
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: team better, We're gonna move you to first place, slash
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: DH And they told him that in February, we.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: Didn't know that we were going to get it.
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: They knew that they were.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: Pursuing, they were trying. If we get them, then we're
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: going to try this. Yeah, that's fair enough. Now here's
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: here's where there's some evidence about Paul. Okay, So let's
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: say you are the owner of the Red Sox and
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: your general manager just botched one of the best hitters
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: in the league. The solution is getting rid of the hitter,
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: or hey, maybe you're gonna take a time out from
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: being GM.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: They sided with the GM.
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: I gide it with the GM because why maybe, okay,
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: here's our out right.
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: Because he did what they wanted him to do, or
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: maybe you know, it is a team at the end
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: of the day, and he's one player on the team.
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: I just I've watched this team trade Mookie Bets and
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: Rafael dev and that's unaccepted.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: That McCarthy had the best question, which they evaded by
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: going into the twenty four year history instead of the question,
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: which was the last five years?
- 1:18:16Speaker 7: That was very Belichick like, wasn't it.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: Oh yeah it was. It's absolutely what Belichick did with
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: Mike Reese at the owner's meeting when he said, you know,
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: why should fans be excited this year? He goes over
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: the last twenty years?
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: Right. It would be the same thing if the Patriots
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: in a couple of years traded Christian Gonzales, right, and
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: they said and they and you know, whether it was
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: a contract thing like with Mookie or it was an
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: attitude thing like with Devers, and they just traded Christian Gonzales,
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: but they made the bed and then they traded the player.
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: And I would say the same thing about doing that
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: for Christianzalez, just to make it about football, you know,
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: like that. That's what the Red Sox have done, is
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: they have played hardball with their superstar players twice now
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: and they've lost two generational talents as a result.
- 1:18:58Speaker 7: And go ahead.
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: I was just gonna say, you se, the fans like
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: Jared Carabas that I can't explain it, and that to
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: me is the biggest nightmare as a fan when We
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: spend so much time talking about how can the Patriots
- 1:19:08Speaker 4: get more talented, to have talent in the building and
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: have a core that won a championship whatnot? Seven years ago?
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: And now that's all gone. Why do fans have any
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: reason to believe that this is exactly what's gonna happen
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: with all the young stars?
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: My line of thought too, because I've heard a lot
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: about well, it's sending a message in the locker room.
- 1:19:25Speaker 7: You know, these young kids are impressionable. They're coming up.
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: Roman Anthony and they're telling you how good it is
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: for them. And I would say I can make just
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: as strong an abstract argument. I mean, let's face it,
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: that's a very subjective thing. Is how it affects other people,
- 1:19:39Speaker 6: you know what I mean? Mentally, Like you can't identify,
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: you can't define how that's affecting Roman Anthony and Marcello Meyer, Right,
- 1:19:47Speaker 6: you don't know for sure? Can't that have a negative
- 1:19:49Speaker 6: impact on a young guy like I can do exactly
- 1:19:51Speaker 6: what they want. I can be elite at what I do,
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: But he can give me a contract and they can
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: still trade me.
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: But he didn't do exactly he did want.
- 1:20:00Speaker 7: He's hitting at an elite level.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: They asked him to be all they wanted.
- 1:20:03Speaker 6: They If you think that he's gone because you wouldn't
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: play for at base, then I have a couple of
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: bridges to sell you he's gone because they gave him
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: a contract that they immediately regretted. Well, three hundred and
- 1:20:13Speaker 6: thirteen million, I would argue things changed. He became a DH.
- 1:20:17Speaker 6: Now that's a very expensive DH.
- 1:20:19Speaker 7: I get it.
- 1:20:20Speaker 6: I understand what the Red Sox are thinking. He's a
- 1:20:23Speaker 6: very expensive DH. He's not overly expensive if you consider
- 1:20:28Speaker 6: him a third basement.
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: So why if they asked Bregman to play second or
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: short or whatever.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: Cold club third basement.
- 1:20:36Speaker 6: Well, they also initially posed it as that that they
- 1:20:39Speaker 6: were going to ask him to do that, and that
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: was how they placated him initially.
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: There's no issue with them asking Devers to not play
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: the field or to play first base because Bregman's awesome
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: at third base, cold glove caliber, third basement. It makes
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: all sense in the world. But you got to be
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: upfront and honest with the player, especially a star player
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: like Rafael Devers, and like to douce point about the fans,
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: like I am a fan that wants to buy tickets
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: to watch the Red Sox. I won't give him my money,
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: Like I just won't. Like you keep on doing stuff
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: like this. It's a slap in the face of the fans,
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: Like who's jersey are you supposed to buy? Like who
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: are you supposed to go.
- 1:21:14Speaker 7: To the games for?
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: And I know the kids are coming, the kids are coming,
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: but like they're not here yet, Like they're here, but
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: they're not They're not at that leg right.
- 1:21:22Speaker 6: And if you wanted to give me some some like
- 1:21:26Speaker 6: ready made major league pitchers in an exchange that maybe
- 1:21:30Speaker 6: costs some money, then I'd be more willing to say Okay.
- 1:21:34Speaker 6: So they look at this is value add because it's
- 1:21:37Speaker 6: going to be additioned by subtraction. Even though he's a
- 1:21:39Speaker 6: really good hitter. They don't like the way he's been brooding.
- 1:21:42Speaker 6: Even though I think this is a month too late.
- 1:21:45Speaker 6: I think the problem was back in April and May,
- 1:21:49Speaker 6: when I would say May, when Cosas actually got hurt
- 1:21:52Speaker 6: and they had the hole at first base.
- 1:21:53Speaker 7: That's when it was a problem.
- 1:21:55Speaker 6: I think he kind of put it behind him, and
- 1:21:56Speaker 6: I think he had moved on and he is really
- 1:21:58Speaker 6: sort of settled into a decent groove offensively. And I
- 1:22:03Speaker 6: had an argument with No Socks yesterday about this. It's like,
- 1:22:06Speaker 6: you know, he doesn't he's not that good. He doesn't
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: do this. And I would argue with with no socks
- 1:22:11Speaker 6: in general, that defines every player and every sport is
- 1:22:14Speaker 6: they're just not that good anymore, you know, in this
- 1:22:18Speaker 6: day and age. But like he's pointing to his batting
- 1:22:21Speaker 6: average being two seventy two whatever, it is not being
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: very good. What do you think of Aaron Judge? Do
- 1:22:27Speaker 6: you know he has too fewer RBIs than Aaron Judge.
- 1:22:29Speaker 6: Aaron Judge is having a historic season. He has two
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: fewer RBIs than Aaron Judge.
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: And if you took away half of Dever's RBIs that
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: he has this year, the Red Sox wouldn't even be
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: close to where they are now. They wouldn't even be sniffing.
- 1:22:46Speaker 7: So trade him. I get it, you want to you
- 1:22:49Speaker 7: want to get about you.
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: I'm for the trade, by the way, but that's.
- 1:22:53Speaker 7: Okay, And I'm not on record anti, but I'm not
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: anti the trade.
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: Make a baseball trade, and make a baseball.
- 1:22:59Speaker 7: Trade, don't make a salary dump that.
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: Well, let's see what they do with the money. I'm
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: holding out hope.
- 1:23:05Speaker 7: But I don't know why that matters. If it does matter,
- 1:23:08Speaker 7: if they had made if they had got something for
- 1:23:11Speaker 7: this guy, you chose.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: Not to not right away you get closer to the deadline,
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: other guys might free up. It's better to wait till
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: then you might have more of a selection the deadline.
- 1:23:22Speaker 7: I don't understand if you have.
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: Because you wanted to get rid of him.
- 1:23:24Speaker 6: Now I'm okay again again, after everything had set, the
- 1:23:29Speaker 6: dust had settled, and he had sort.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: Of we don't know how long they've been working on this,
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: a couple of weeks.
- 1:23:34Speaker 7: He had come to grips with it.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: So if you waited till after the dust had settled,
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: they waited until they had the deal.
- 1:23:39Speaker 6: But again, I don't understand why your theory is exclusive
- 1:23:43Speaker 6: of getting talent.
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: Now, I think Craig and Sam did a good job.
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: All right, we got let's get back to the show.
- 1:23:49Speaker 7: It's just that I'm talking about it.
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: We talked about it enough.
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: We can talk show like the trade. There's I'm sure
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: there's a much more recent example. But it's my childhood,
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: like a rod for Alfonsa Sorriana, right, like this is
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: my rod was so much better than a Fonza Sorriana,
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: but sorran it.
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: Was a good But did that preclude those two teams
- 1:24:08Speaker 6: from then adding other players in the deadline?
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: And they traded him, but they took on money. Texas
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: took on money to make the trade happen, but they
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: got an All Star.
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: When is the trade headline? By the way, July?
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: End of July?
- 1:24:20Speaker 7: And I just don't know why trading for.
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: A month and a half. It's a month and a
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: half from now.
- 1:24:27Speaker 7: You don't know how calendars work. It's less than a
- 1:24:29Speaker 7: month away the trade deadline, he said, end of July.
- 1:24:32Speaker 7: Usually it's the middle of July. But but it's the
- 1:24:35Speaker 7: end of June. Now then it's like.
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: That's the middle of middle of June.
- 1:24:42Speaker 7: So it's less than a month away.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: I said a month and a half because he said
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: it was the end of July.
- 1:24:47Speaker 6: You know, so the thirty So the thirty first is
- 1:24:50Speaker 6: a month and a half. Okay, you're right, it's July
- 1:24:54Speaker 6: thirty first month happened and a half. Why do you
- 1:24:57Speaker 6: have to wait till you're right? I said, it's a
- 1:24:59Speaker 6: long time. Said you're right, No, it's not a long time.
- 1:25:01Speaker 7: It is, it's six weeks.
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: I don't want him brooding sitting on that cooler being
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: a yeah, I don't want him hitting.
- 1:25:08Speaker 7: I'm not anti Devers trade.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: I know you want it more. I don't think right
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: now they.
- 1:25:13Speaker 7: They wanted something, they got nothing.
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: They got three hundred million dollars.
- 1:25:16Speaker 6: This makes the package they got for Mookie Bets look
- 1:25:19Speaker 6: like they got Jason Verattek and Derek Wall for Heathcliff's Sulcombe.
- 1:25:23Speaker 7: This was nothing. They got nothing.
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: Listen, I don't think the management they got to.
- 1:25:27Speaker 6: Get the prize of they immediately put to Wister like
- 1:25:31Speaker 6: that's supposedly the best guy thing.
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: But they didn't have alignment with Devers and that was
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: the most important thing, and said it's seventeen times, only.
- 1:25:38Speaker 7: Fourteen only fourteen?
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: All right, okay good?
- 1:25:41Speaker 6: And I also read that chicken bleep thing that they
- 1:25:43Speaker 6: had to do by saying we're gonna have an eight
- 1:25:45Speaker 6: o'clock Well, zoo.
- 1:25:46Speaker 7: Olot want Yeah, why did the GM have to be
- 1:25:49Speaker 7: on the west coast?
- 1:25:50Speaker 6: Well, he's gonna be with the because he has no
- 1:25:52Speaker 6: balls and he didn't want to have a press conference
- 1:25:54Speaker 6: when people might actually be there.
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: At a gorilla He may not be suited to be
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: a GM, that's true.
- 1:25:58Speaker 6: They're suited to own the team anymore because they don't
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: want to invest in winning.
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: Watching that press conference made it worse, like I I
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: it was. It made it worse. They like just sitting
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: there watching them talk about it. We don't have a lineman.
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: You don't have a lineman. He's your DH, and he's
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: the best left at hand, Henner in the al.
- 1:26:15Speaker 7: Now we have now we have roster flexibility.
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: Well, because they've always wanted that with the DH. They
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: want to revolve the socks.
- 1:26:22Speaker 7: And that's that's you know what they always say about
- 1:26:24Speaker 7: having a young guy, you know what's really good for him, dhing.
- 1:26:27Speaker 7: That's usually a good way to develop a prospect.
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: No pressure on the young guys except Roman Anthony hitting
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: third in the lineup in a really important series in Seattle.
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: No pressure better than.
- 1:26:36Speaker 7: Christian Campbell hitting clean up for like the entire month
- 1:26:39Speaker 7: of May.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: It's crazy, all right, Nate, Chicago's on the hotline. What's up, Nate?
- 1:26:44Speaker 7: They've won six in a row.
- 1:26:47Speaker 21: Good now, you guys are getting riled up, all right,
- 1:26:51Speaker 21: Hang in there, Mike.
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:26:54Speaker 7: Mike talks about no other sports I know you hockey.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: It's not just football, it's just defense, not even sport.
- 1:27:03Speaker 7: And you know Mike, he's defensive guy.
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: He doesn't even talk about stuff you know about that
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: about Mike, but he likes the defense.
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: All right, what do you got, Nate, Well, we.
- 1:27:13Speaker 8: All value Mike. I think we can all agree on that.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you in different ways, all right.
- 1:27:17Speaker 21: You know we talk about sometimes now it takes a
- 1:27:20Speaker 21: couple of years before we know the draft class is
- 1:27:23Speaker 21: a good draft or a bad draft. I was thinking
- 1:27:26Speaker 21: about the twenty three draft, Kean White, Christian Gonzalez, Pop Douglass,
- 1:27:31Speaker 21: and kay Sean Body, and I'm wondering what you guys
- 1:27:34Speaker 21: would need to see from now as far as like
- 1:27:36Speaker 21: increase productivity this year, for at the end of the
- 1:27:40Speaker 21: year for us to look at the twenty three draft
- 1:27:42Speaker 21: and say, hey, that was a good draft. And I
- 1:27:45Speaker 21: have a music recommendation for Evan. Listen a Big X
- 1:27:50Speaker 21: the plug. I think you'll like him. I'll take it
- 1:27:52Speaker 21: off air. Thanks, guys.
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: I've heard a Big X them a little bit. I
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: think it's already kind of a good draft to me
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: because of Christian.
- 1:28:00Speaker 6: I mean, I think Gonzalez was obviously an excellent pick. Yeah,
- 1:28:03Speaker 6: and those other three guys, if they make an ascension
- 1:28:06Speaker 6: into being frontline players.
- 1:28:08Speaker 7: That's a great draft. I think they've already four front
- 1:28:10Speaker 7: line players.
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: Already a solid draft. I think to be a greater,
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: a really great draft, that those other guys would have
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: to help out. But like Christian Zalez has been a stud,
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: Kean White's been a good player, you know, starting caliber player,
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: Pop Douglas has been a functional receiver.
- 1:28:26Speaker 6: Like I think that I want to see more about
- 1:28:28Speaker 6: those the other three, Like king On White is a
- 1:28:30Speaker 6: starting caliber player for the Patriots, would he be a
- 1:28:33Speaker 6: starting caliber player for other teams?
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: He would be in a rotation.
- 1:28:37Speaker 7: I'm not saying no, ye asking that was an open ending.
- 1:28:39Speaker 7: I don't know if you would be.
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: An eighty percent snap guy for another team, But he
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: would be playing on on most teams, you know, I
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: think he would have a role.
- 1:28:48Speaker 4: I think Mike would argue, I mean, I think when
- 1:28:50Speaker 4: you look at it, it's a big opportunity for these
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: guys this year. I mean, Demario Douglas have an opportunity
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: a new offense, maybe catch a bunch of balls, Booty
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: as he fit in.
- 1:28:58Speaker 5: I mean, seems like he has a can. Actually with
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: Drake May maybe he takes palls.
- 1:29:02Speaker 6: But those are two guys that I would say fall
- 1:29:04Speaker 6: into the same category of what I'm just talking about.
- 1:29:06Speaker 6: They're going to be receivers for this team that has
- 1:29:08Speaker 6: no receivers. Yeah, would they be frontline receivers for a
- 1:29:12Speaker 6: team that has it?
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:29:13Speaker 7: Right?
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: And that and that to me leads to the biggest question.
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: I mean, and I even just throw City so in there.
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: He's in the mix for the guard position. But you
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: Ken White is That's that's the defining one to me.
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: He's able to be a starting defensive end hand down play,
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: you know, sixty seventy percent of the snaps be out there,
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: consistent pressure off the edge.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: Then, I mean, right, really we know Gonzales. If Booty
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: and White end up being good NFL players, then good draft.
- 1:29:37Speaker 6: But I watched Gonzales play and I say he would
- 1:29:41Speaker 6: be a cornerback for virtually any other team.
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29:43Speaker 6: I don't say that about any of those other guys
- 1:29:45Speaker 6: in the draft. No, I think they get a lot
- 1:29:47Speaker 6: of opportunities because they're on a team that's talent division. Now,
- 1:29:50Speaker 6: maybe this the caller's right, they're entering year three. You know,
- 1:29:56Speaker 6: Kaisehon Boody, if you told me before last year could
- 1:29:59Speaker 6: have had the year that he did last year, I
- 1:30:00Speaker 6: would have said that, I don't see it.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: He did.
- 1:30:02Speaker 6: He got better and he's improving, and based on what
- 1:30:05Speaker 6: I saw in the spring, I think he's built off
- 1:30:07Speaker 6: of that and is getting even better.
- 1:30:09Speaker 7: Good shape, So maybe he is.
- 1:30:12Speaker 6: At the end of the year. I look at him
- 1:30:13Speaker 6: and say, yeah, he could be a third receiver for
- 1:30:15Speaker 6: another team too.
- 1:30:16Speaker 7: He's pretty good. He has a knack.
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: You got a factor in the Marty Mapu moved to
- 1:30:20Speaker 4: linebacker and that happened last week, and it's it's it
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: seems like I mean, we talked injuries with him. He's
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: hanging on by a thread.
- 1:30:26Speaker 3: It's the middle of that draft, Jake Anders Chad Ryland obviously, Oh,
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: I think the city. So Mafi's already off the team.
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: Is the fifth round pick that year, That middle of
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: the draft was rough. I remember Dead Live and then
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: they saved me with Pop Douglas. I was like, all right,
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: like a good pick, but that's always like that's another
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: you know, feather of the notch of the consensus. You know,
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: they they picked two guys in the sixth round at
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: receiver that were pretty well thought of and known and
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff, and those two guys end
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: up being a lot better than the guys that they
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: reached on in the third and the fourth round.
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: Todd in North Carolina. Hey, Todd, Hey.
- 1:31:03Speaker 16: Guys, can you yes?
- 1:31:05Speaker 13: Okay, so I've got a quick game.
- 1:31:07Speaker 8: First, I'll say Carolina is as derived because we'll get
- 1:31:11Speaker 8: you to know about what.
- 1:31:13Speaker 16: How many men's professional teams can you name that don't
- 1:31:18Speaker 16: have a pluralized name.
- 1:31:20Speaker 21: I got the Heat and I got the Apple.
- 1:31:22Speaker 6: What name?
- 1:31:24Speaker 8: How many of you guys can name?
- 1:31:26Speaker 5: It's a pet peevemon.
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: Okay, thanks Todd. So if you go in MLS, they
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: all do you know, what's the question? How many men's
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: professional teams have a pluralized name?
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: But is that pluralized?
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:31:39Speaker 7: Heat, the Magic, Thunder, Thunder, Jazz.
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of basketball teams.
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: So this just feels in the same department of like
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: warm up song team mascot names they used.
- 1:31:50Speaker 6: To be so like the Red Sox, We'll do the
- 1:31:53Speaker 6: white song now the Raptors, Red Sox White.
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: So it's all about it's all about you know what
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: is that By the way, I love the Yankee pinstripes.
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: Their away uniforms are like the ugliest.
- 1:32:10Speaker 6: Well, they've destroyed the uniforms too with that new company
- 1:32:13Speaker 6: that fanatics.
- 1:32:14Speaker 7: Is that what it is? A fanatics thing?
- 1:32:16Speaker 6: Yeah, I totally agree with you, Fred, they've made bland
- 1:32:20Speaker 6: uniforms somehow look worse.
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: How do you feel about the Red Sox wearing their
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: city connects during the Yankee series, because this has also
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: been the point of contention that it should be like
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: old school Red Sox Yankees original jerseys.
- 1:32:33Speaker 7: I don't care about not city connects. That's another one
- 1:32:36Speaker 7: that gets under no socks a skin.
- 1:32:38Speaker 3: Yeah, what's the new use of hockey?
- 1:32:39Speaker 4: The YETI is that what they landed on, just like like,
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: why can't we just club not yet?
- 1:32:46Speaker 6: I don't think it was Yetty. I think that was
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: one that was and they all said they picked the
- 1:32:50Speaker 6: wrong name. They should have gone with Yetti. But I
- 1:32:52Speaker 6: think they had a hard time to get that right
- 1:32:54Speaker 6: from the foot or something like that. But they but
- 1:32:57Speaker 6: they have company.
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: Oh right, they.
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: Couldn't use you couldn't use it, right.
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: I also think it's funny that the athletics the A's
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: do not have a city right now. So they they're
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: not like the Boston Red Sox are just the athletics.
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: They didn't know the olament, So what are they doing.
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: They're in Sacramento right now, but they're going to be
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: in Vegas.
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: That's what I thought they were going on.
- 1:33:18Speaker 7: Yeah, but they right now in Vegas.
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox Athletics.
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: That's going to be a stadium in Vegas right for
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: the baseball team.
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: I don't know. It's supposed to go where the indoor
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: can't plays Flamingo right, Flamingo Luxor area of the strip
- 1:33:35Speaker 3: down there now, the Luxor is thing. I think they
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: forged itself.
- 1:33:42Speaker 7: Ex Caliber I still the ex Caliber.
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: They demoed the Flamingo. I think the other two are
- 1:33:49Speaker 3: still there.
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: We stayed at the ex Caliber and we got like
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: comped for the brunch or whatever it was, and we
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: were like really excitedly, Hey, look at us getting comped.
- 1:33:56Speaker 7: I went up there.
- 1:33:57Speaker 5: I didn't eve want to eat the dessert, Like everything
- 1:33:59Speaker 5: just looks so gross.
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: It was the nastiest book I have ever seen in
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: my life. Boston Cream's on the line. What's up? Boston Cream?
- 1:34:06Speaker 8: A guns wouldn't be another Pus show without an argument,
- 1:34:10Speaker 8: completely not about football, and another.
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: Boring Tod question, good.
- 1:34:18Speaker 7: Straight Tom Brady hater.
- 1:34:22Speaker 8: But truly it's kind of Paul that's the sneaky, maybe
- 1:34:25Speaker 8: not so steinky Belichick hater.
- 1:34:27Speaker 3: It's true I agree with that.
- 1:34:32Speaker 7: I don't really have. I not expressed myself over the
- 1:34:35Speaker 7: last twenty five years. It's not properly.
- 1:34:39Speaker 3: Just got and four.
- 1:34:41Speaker 6: I've sort of held my nose and you know, I've
- 1:34:44Speaker 6: accepted the fact that Belichick was the head coach. I
- 1:34:46Speaker 6: can remember having an argument with Fred like one hundred
- 1:34:49Speaker 6: years ago, like, if you could be guaranteed all the
- 1:34:52Speaker 6: winning that the Patriots have done, but have a head
- 1:34:55Speaker 6: coach with a personality instead, would you want? And Fred
- 1:34:59Speaker 6: very stubborn, he said, no, no, no, I want Belichick,
- 1:35:01Speaker 6: not really understanding what You're gonna win six titles and
- 1:35:04Speaker 6: you're gonna win every game that you've won, But Andy Reid's.
- 1:35:06Speaker 7: Going to be the coach. No, I don't want it.
- 1:35:08Speaker 6: They might say hi to you, yeah, but he might
- 1:35:10Speaker 6: actually walk by you and acknowledge that you exist as
- 1:35:13Speaker 6: a fellow human being.
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: No listen asking too much.
- 1:35:16Speaker 7: Yeah, I think changed his stance on that sense.
- 1:35:22Speaker 8: In terms for pedestrian pet peeves. One of my pet
- 1:35:25Speaker 8: peeves is when you're standing at a crosswalk and you
- 1:35:28Speaker 8: know what car can stop, but this might be a
- 1:35:30Speaker 8: city problem. The person just doesn't want to stop because
- 1:35:33Speaker 8: they're in a rush, and they just speed up and
- 1:35:36Speaker 8: go right past to you as like a runner and
- 1:35:38Speaker 8: someone who's often a pedestrian, I like to just put
- 1:35:40Speaker 8: one foot into the roadway and then watch the fear
- 1:35:44Speaker 8: of God come through their eyes.
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: Okay, so here's here's where I'm Boston kaream. I disagree
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: with that. I think in the city, if you're if
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: you're a pedestrian and you're not crossing with the light,
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: you're taking your life into your own hands. I think
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: the cars have every right to keep going. I don't
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: in the city we should be stopping every time someone's
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: in a tosswalk. It just ties up traffic too much.
- 1:36:07Speaker 7: That's why you have the hoicide fred for it in
- 1:36:12Speaker 7: the city.
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: Like I'm all for jwalking. I'm a big jay walker,
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: but I realize I'm I'm in the wrong. Yeah, they
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: I'm in the wrong and they don't need to stop
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: for me, so I need to do it.
- 1:36:24Speaker 6: I've occasionally done what he's talking about where you get
- 1:36:29Speaker 6: to an intersection and you realize too late that there's
- 1:36:32Speaker 6: a person and you feel I feel bad, like, oh,
- 1:36:35Speaker 6: I should have stopped, But now like I don't want
- 1:36:38Speaker 6: to slam on my brakes to stop because that can
- 1:36:41Speaker 6: be more dangerous than not stopping in the first place.
- 1:36:44Speaker 7: So I see both ways.
- 1:36:46Speaker 8: Yeah, Fred is kind of like Michael Scott where he
- 1:36:49Speaker 8: comes in and tells the story about hitting a speed
- 1:36:51Speaker 8: bump on the highway. Right. And I do have a
- 1:36:56Speaker 8: question if we have times are a little overrating or roster,
- 1:37:02Speaker 8: which I would believe every fan base does. If you
- 1:37:06Speaker 8: were to put a number out of thirty two, what
- 1:37:08Speaker 8: would you say The Patriots skill wise are out of
- 1:37:12Speaker 8: thirty assuming drink made is like middle of.
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: The rowdy too, Oh he's middle of the road.
- 1:37:16Speaker 7: Better better take back that shot at toime.
- 1:37:19Speaker 3: Yeah, thirty two is a little Yeah, thirty two, That
- 1:37:23Speaker 3: is that what he's saying. You're saying either the No.
- 1:37:25Speaker 7: One one to thirty two? Would you put that?
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: He was saying that they He thinks that they're I
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: think that they've.
- 1:37:30Speaker 6: Sort of gotten to the hot probably the middle of
- 1:37:33Speaker 6: the path twenties. Yeah, they've moved up from the bottom
- 1:37:36Speaker 6: to you know, top Thankston Williams.
- 1:37:39Speaker 7: Top of the last thirty is tough.
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: The offensive line and receivers are still not.
- 1:37:44Speaker 6: Sire, still works in progress, you know, based on that
- 1:37:48Speaker 6: that overrated thing. So I was joking about, you know,
- 1:37:51Speaker 6: you go for the ego boost when someone comes out
- 1:37:54Speaker 6: and say hey you. So I bump into someone yesterday
- 1:37:57Speaker 6: getting lunch and starts talking to me and asking me
- 1:38:00Speaker 6: questions about you know, and I was like, you know,
- 1:38:02Speaker 6: I went with my my staple free agency thing.
- 1:38:06Speaker 7: They've improved, blah blah blah blah blah.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: So what do you think?
- 1:38:08Speaker 7: What do you think?
- 1:38:09Speaker 6: Uh, you know, ten wins, eleven wins. I go, oh,
- 1:38:11Speaker 6: that's a lot. He goes, well, what do you think?
- 1:38:13Speaker 6: I go maybe seven or eight? The look of utter
- 1:38:17Speaker 6: disdain really and I felt like I, you know, I today,
- 1:38:22Speaker 6: you know, and I was just like, I'm thinking to myself,
- 1:38:26Speaker 6: don't ask me if you don't want an answer, like
- 1:38:28Speaker 6: I tried to answer it. Honestly, I think I think
- 1:38:31Speaker 6: they're going to be twice as good as they were
- 1:38:33Speaker 6: last year, and somehow that's going to be a disappointment
- 1:38:36Speaker 6: to you. That kind of lends to Boston Cream's point
- 1:38:38Speaker 6: of I think people were starting to overrate things a
- 1:38:40Speaker 6: little bit. Eleven wins now or we're going to be
- 1:38:43Speaker 6: eleven wins are busted, We're going to be disappointed.
- 1:38:45Speaker 5: It's what happens is that builds in a crescendo.
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: You have mini camp, there's usually good vibes out of that,
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: and you get to this point between ani camp and
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: training camping, this is the time to be stupid positive
- 1:38:55Speaker 4: because once you start training camp and joint practices in
- 1:38:57Speaker 4: preseason games. I remember thinking last year with Jira when
- 1:39:01Speaker 4: it was like, it's all great right now, I mean,
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: and Abel said the same thing to you, like it's
- 1:39:04Speaker 4: it's easy to run the thing through the off season,
- 1:39:06Speaker 4: and especially this year it looked like pretty good.
- 1:39:08Speaker 5: But we all know July twenty whatever, and when it
- 1:39:11Speaker 5: all starts that's when the real well.
- 1:39:13Speaker 6: And then what people do and people do this every year,
- 1:39:18Speaker 6: so they they added what, let's say conservatively seven six, seven,
- 1:39:23Speaker 6: eight starters.
- 1:39:25Speaker 7: What happens if three of those guys get hurt.
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: It's the worst, right and injuries will happen.
- 1:39:30Speaker 6: And that's not a matter of it's not like that's
- 1:39:32Speaker 6: a doomsday scenario. I'm not talking like Drake May gets hurt.
- 1:39:36Speaker 6: Every team would be devastated if their starting quarterbacks Carold Landry.
- 1:39:40Speaker 7: But what pull that?
- 1:39:42Speaker 6: What happens if if Christian Gonzales gets hurt? What you know,
- 1:39:46Speaker 6: what happens if you know you have right now a
- 1:39:50Speaker 6: situation on the offensive line where you've you've drafted a
- 1:39:53Speaker 6: kid to be the fourth overall pick and starting left
- 1:39:56Speaker 6: tackle because you didn't have a left tackle, and all
- 1:39:58Speaker 6: of a sudden, Will Campbell gets hurt. You know, like,
- 1:40:00Speaker 6: I'm not even know if Will Campbell's going to be
- 1:40:02Speaker 6: good or not, but I know that you don't have
- 1:40:03Speaker 6: anything better than him.
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: I know that.
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: I also think you're looking at the opponents and a
- 1:40:10Speaker 3: lot of the reason why people are picking them to
- 1:40:12Speaker 3: win so many games because the schedule is so easy.
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: But it always looks one way in June, and then
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: we get into the season, and then there will be
- 1:40:20Speaker 3: teams that are much better than we thought they were
- 1:40:22Speaker 3: going to be. There might be teams that were much worse,
- 1:40:24Speaker 3: but there's going to be teams that were better.
- 1:40:26Speaker 6: It's a great point, you know, I think it looked
- 1:40:27Speaker 6: a lot harder last year at this time. Yeah, and
- 1:40:30Speaker 6: it ended up playing right right, because I think there
- 1:40:33Speaker 6: were teams like the Jets that people thought were going
- 1:40:35Speaker 6: to be really good.
- 1:40:36Speaker 7: It's gonna be two really tough games, and it turned
- 1:40:38Speaker 7: out that it wasn't.
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: Speaking of the Jets. Matthew from Arizona rights in, I've
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: been watching the Jets YouTube channel and worry that we
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: may be underestimating them With Justin Fields, he's more mobile
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: in the pocket. Do you think he's a bigger threat
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: than Rogers with the Steelers? Yes? Yes, what he's saying
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: is Rogers with the Steelers. Jet feels with the Jets.
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: Who's a bigger challenge for the paper Rogers with this Steelers.
- 1:41:00Speaker 6: You're talking about who's a better team the Steelers are
- 1:41:02Speaker 6: the Jets.
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: Is he a bigger threat with the Jets than Rogers
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: is with the Steelers?
- 1:41:06Speaker 6: I would say Fields with the Jets, I think Rogers
- 1:41:08Speaker 6: is done, but I think the Steelers are better than
- 1:41:10Speaker 6: the Jets. So I would rather play the Jets than
- 1:41:12Speaker 6: the Steelers, if that makes any sense.
- 1:41:15Speaker 7: But Rogers, to me, I.
- 1:41:17Speaker 5: Want to get there, and I probably am there.
- 1:41:19Speaker 4: It's still just hard to shake off Aaron Rodgers, and
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: you know, truly believe he's washed, which he very well
- 1:41:24Speaker 4: might be. But I just think of how Fields looked
- 1:41:28Speaker 4: here a couple of years ago, and he had the
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: best game of his life.
- 1:41:30Speaker 5: I think about Week one with Gino Smith.
- 1:41:32Speaker 6: I think how he looked here last year, where like
- 1:41:35Speaker 6: the Jets are a good team, like talent wise, they
- 1:41:38Speaker 6: missing the quarterback, which is a huge missing. But do
- 1:41:42Speaker 6: we like just penciling two wins against the Jets? Is
- 1:41:46Speaker 6: that what everybody's doing other than us? No, but I
- 1:41:49Speaker 6: think everybody's penciling two wins for there. The penciling will
- 1:41:53Speaker 6: win over the Raiders. The penciling and win over the Titans,
- 1:41:55Speaker 6: the Browns, and that's how you get to ten and
- 1:41:57Speaker 6: eleven wins. Every one of those games is win. I
- 1:42:00Speaker 6: look at those games, is probably six or seven of
- 1:42:02Speaker 6: them you're gonna split them. You'll go four and three
- 1:42:04Speaker 6: if you know, three and four whatever, because the other
- 1:42:08Speaker 6: teams are looking at you the same way.
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: Sure.
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: Yeah, but Justin Fields does not put any fear, And
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: to me, that fear that game he played a couple
- 1:42:17Speaker 3: of years ago was the best game of his life.
- 1:42:19Speaker 3: He'll never play that.
- 1:42:20Speaker 6: I do not have fear of Justin Fields. I respect
- 1:42:22Speaker 6: the Jets roster, and I kind of respect what they've done. Like,
- 1:42:26Speaker 6: I haven't heard Ben Vollen wrote about this over the weekend,
- 1:42:29Speaker 6: and I you know, I hesitate to give Ben Vollen
- 1:42:32Speaker 6: credit because I love to tease Benvowen. He's one of
- 1:42:35Speaker 6: my favorite guys to tease. I haven't heard anything about
- 1:42:39Speaker 6: the Jets all off season. When was the last time
- 1:42:42Speaker 6: you said that?
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I just I think the Jets roster has they
- 1:42:47Speaker 3: have Obviously they have some top end talent with Sauce
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: and Garrett Wilson and Quentin Williams, but like.
- 1:42:53Speaker 7: We're making some a pretty good offensive one.
- 1:42:55Speaker 3: We're just getting to the point though, where it's like
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: everybody keeps talking about how to Jets' roster is and
- 1:43:01Speaker 3: they don't win. So like at some point you have
- 1:43:03Speaker 3: to look at it and say, it can't all be
- 1:43:05Speaker 3: the coach, it can't all be the quarterback. Like they
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: have this great roster every single year, Jet's great roster, loaded, loaded, loaded,
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: and then they don't win any games. So at some
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: point they got to win.
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:43:16Speaker 6: I would agree with that, and I would also say
- 1:43:17Speaker 6: the same thing I just said about the Patriots. I
- 1:43:19Speaker 6: do think they have good talent around the roster. Let's
- 1:43:22Speaker 6: see what happens when those some of those guys start
- 1:43:24Speaker 6: getting hurt. You know, Let's see how much depth they have.
- 1:43:26Speaker 6: I think the offensive line they're gonna have, They're gonna
- 1:43:29Speaker 6: have two young tackles.
- 1:43:31Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:43:31Speaker 7: Are they gonna stay healthy?
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, maybe Jasper and Somerville by way
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: of Maine. Full disclosure. I get rid of my car
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: two years back and drive mostly for work a few
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: times a month. If you're driving a car in Boston,
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: you are one hundred percent an interloper and should act
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: as such. I slow walk, jay, walk, walk, or however
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: I please, because Boston is a four hundred year old
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: city with bones built around the on foot individual. When
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: I'm in some hell hole like Phoenix, I know I
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: will coutow to drivers they will legit kill you. But
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: when I'm in God's walkable country, I will continue to
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: be a walk Chad ten and seven season wildcard win
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: with the second round exit incoming, Drake may MVP discussion
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: next year watch the space.
- 1:44:16Speaker 3: Boston would be more walkable. To his point, if the
- 1:44:20Speaker 3: public transit was better than it is now. Some of
- 1:44:23Speaker 3: the reason why it isn't is because the city grid
- 1:44:25Speaker 3: is makes no sense whatsoever. It's not like New York
- 1:44:28Speaker 3: City where it's all just you.
- 1:44:29Speaker 7: Know, it's amazing, you know what cows dictate how the
- 1:44:32Speaker 7: roads are going to be.
- 1:44:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I get his point, but like it's only walkable
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: within the neighborhoods that you want. Like if you're in
- 1:44:39Speaker 3: the North End for the day, great and walkable. But
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: if you live in Everett and you want to go
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: to the North End, there's really only one way to
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: do that, like you know, and it's in an uber
- 1:44:50Speaker 3: in your own car.
- 1:44:51Speaker 4: Like you're over by the Common or you're kind of
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: North End near South Station with Quincy Market in that area, right, But.
- 1:44:57Speaker 7: A lot of people do walk.
- 1:44:59Speaker 6: I'm always sort of I always think of different areas
- 1:45:02Speaker 6: of the city that in my mind are like, oh,
- 1:45:04Speaker 6: well that's way over there. But people that live in
- 1:45:07Speaker 6: and around the city and spend a lot of time
- 1:45:08Speaker 6: in the city, No, you just walk from you know
- 1:45:12Speaker 6: wherever to Fenway and that's no problem. I remember doing
- 1:45:16Speaker 6: that when when I met my wife and she was
- 1:45:18Speaker 6: still living in town. She lived you know, near Beacon Hill,
- 1:45:22Speaker 6: and like, just how many places we walked that I
- 1:45:25Speaker 6: was like I never thought of like being able to
- 1:45:27Speaker 6: walk from there to there.
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: Oh yeah, now the green line, if you're on the
- 1:45:31Speaker 3: green line, you're good. Any of the other things you're
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: it's a it's a while. And then the green line,
- 1:45:36Speaker 3: you know, we'll go all away from Fenway to to
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: you know, North Station, so you you can like use it.
- 1:45:41Speaker 3: But it's just I challenged that the whole city is
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: really walkable, like the bird, like the neighborhoods are walkable.
- 1:45:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I get a lot of traffic through Ruggles for Fenway.
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: Is that a big Like we did that one time
- 1:45:54Speaker 4: and said we don't we can't get to the green line,
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: but we took the commuter.
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: Rail to Ruggles and that.
- 1:45:57Speaker 4: But that's a pretty good little walk from rugg Stachne.
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good walk.
- 1:46:03Speaker 7: That's a good walk.
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: Kevin England, I've been a huge Patriots fan for twenty
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: five plus years, but in recent years I've adopted Boston
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: as a whole and watched the Celtics and Bruins when
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: my schedule allows. Very recently I started working at baseball
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: with the Red Sox. My question is, can you explain
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: the Raphael Devers terms in football? Terms the trade in
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: football terms, how big are we talking? So what would
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: be now in an analogy?
- 1:46:31Speaker 7: No, No, that's a big trade. I don't I don't
- 1:46:33Speaker 7: trade have one.
- 1:46:34Speaker 6: I mean it's not as big as like the Luca
- 1:46:36Speaker 6: trade that happened in the NBA, but kind of in
- 1:46:39Speaker 6: that ballpark's close.
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: It's a similar trade, you know, similar Like wait, what
- 1:46:43Speaker 3: they traded?
- 1:46:44Speaker 19: Who?
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: I know?
- 1:46:46Speaker 6: Sunday afternoon, my son told me and I said, we
- 1:46:49Speaker 6: did you get that? Like I immediately didn't believe it.
- 1:46:52Speaker 3: That was the worst part. I was at a Father's
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: Day dinner with my diehard Red Sox fan dad, and
- 1:46:57Speaker 3: we were sitting down to eat dinner and I had
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: to tell him Father's Day that they just traded Raviel
- 1:47:02Speaker 3: Devers and I just saw, like the emotion just gon
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: leave his face, and he was.
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: Like, what I think it would be? Like it's hard
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: to compare it to trading a quarterback, because quarterback, but
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: like if if you were to trade a big sack
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: leader like a Max Crosby or something, and you got
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: like special teamers and uh, you know, some draft picks
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: draft picks in return, it would be something like that.
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: I just think that the one of the league's best
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: sack leaders.
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: The fact that he was homegrown, I think adds a
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: whole another angle to it as well, Like.
- 1:47:37Speaker 4: Especially on the heels of what's happened in the last
- 1:47:39Speaker 4: few years.
- 1:47:40Speaker 7: I mean, it's just like I.
- 1:47:42Speaker 3: Said earlier, Like from a Patriots perspective, I think it's
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: like if they had extended Christian Gonzales then like asked
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: him to like move to safety and he got all
- 1:47:51Speaker 3: mad about it, and then all of a sudden they
- 1:47:54Speaker 3: were like, you know what, if you're not going to
- 1:47:55Speaker 3: play ball, we're just gonna trade you like that. That
- 1:47:58Speaker 3: would like that sort of thing is basically what happened.
- 1:48:03Speaker 7: I don't get that you make it. What would make
- 1:48:04Speaker 7: it a better team?
- 1:48:07Speaker 3: Says you, Well, no, we actually think we might win
- 1:48:10Speaker 3: more games now without Rafield evers then we would have
- 1:48:14Speaker 3: if not. And that's algorithm. I don't mean.
- 1:48:17Speaker 6: I don't mean just to like steal my boy Felger's
- 1:48:20Speaker 6: line that he says all the time. It's one of
- 1:48:21Speaker 6: the few things that he says that I actually agree with.
- 1:48:23Speaker 6: I don't know what's going to happen. I don't, I
- 1:48:25Speaker 6: don't I can't see the future. I don't know what's
- 1:48:27Speaker 6: gonna happen. Maybe some of these teams that I think
- 1:48:33Speaker 6: have played I think the Yankees have played over their
- 1:48:34Speaker 6: heads quite frankly for the first three months of the season,
- 1:48:37Speaker 6: with all their injuries are I can't believe that they're
- 1:48:39Speaker 6: in this situation that maybe they're starting to seek their level.
- 1:48:42Speaker 6: They've lost four in a row now, maybe maybe they
- 1:48:44Speaker 6: have a dive coming. I can't see the future. I
- 1:48:47Speaker 6: don't know what's going to happen, but I don't think
- 1:48:49Speaker 6: the Red Sox are better today than they were.
- 1:48:51Speaker 3: Watching the Yankees twice in like a week, it's like
- 1:48:53Speaker 3: to get Judge out. The rest of that lineup is
- 1:48:56Speaker 3: really not anything scary, not like it used to be.
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: You're not so Kodo Stanton Judge, you.
- 1:49:01Speaker 6: Know, And if they can get Stanton, I mean Stanton's
- 1:49:03Speaker 6: coming back now, but you know, he's such a flawed hitter.
- 1:49:06Speaker 7: Who knows what you're going to get from him? I
- 1:49:09Speaker 7: don't know.
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: Uh, David and Maryland. Dear Evan. He says, I really
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: like you. You're a great addition to the show over
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: the past few years, and I'm concerned about but I'm
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: concerned about your mental and emotional health. Please. You are
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: far too young to be such a curmudgeon. Yes, people
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: talking about soap man bits and personal hygienes can be icky,
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: but just chill. Why rant about the youth goofing around
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: at concerts? Not everyone has fun your way, and that's okay.
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: Most concerning is that you are so annoyed by sometimes
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: greeting your friendly coworkers in the hallway. Paul was already
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: voted most likely to yell at kids to get off
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: his lawn, and yet he has the greatest advice, just
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: be a decent person. I have two things to help
- 1:49:50Speaker 2: you seriously. One, you are a great ball knower. Just
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: be who you are and let others be themselves. Two,
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: I have a burning question I need you to answer.
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: Can you explain the eighty five Bears forty six defense?
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: They had great players, yes, but what was the scheme?
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: I have never heard a good explanation before, and you
- 1:50:09Speaker 2: are just the guy to do it.
- 1:50:10Speaker 3: Well.
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: This is the Buddy Ryan forty six correfense.
- 1:50:15Speaker 3: I mean, the forty six defense is not I'm trying
- 1:50:21Speaker 3: to think of the best way to discre like it's
- 1:50:23Speaker 3: not nowadays. I don't think it's that revolutionary. It was
- 1:50:25Speaker 3: kind of revolutionary for the time. But now, you know,
- 1:50:29Speaker 3: teams played a lot more that. Basically the Bear Front,
- 1:50:33Speaker 3: which you know, very conveniently named it was, you know,
- 1:50:35Speaker 3: probably the biggest thing that came out of the forty
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: six defense. You know, just the way that they align
- 1:50:40Speaker 3: their defensive linemen and.
- 1:50:41Speaker 7: Things like that.
- 1:50:43Speaker 3: You know, I wouldn't say that it's that far of
- 1:50:47Speaker 3: a departure from what teams do now. It just was
- 1:50:51Speaker 3: a pretty revolutionary for the time. Also, me complaining about
- 1:50:57Speaker 3: everything is me being myself, so that that's just I
- 1:51:00Speaker 3: complained about a lot of things. You I'm a complainer.
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: Talked to quite a few of the nineteen eighty five guys,
- 1:51:06Speaker 4: and all of them when talking about that game, and
- 1:51:08Speaker 4: they played the Bears twice in that season, they said
- 1:51:11Speaker 4: it felt like they had a couple extra guys on
- 1:51:13Speaker 4: the field going against them, that's how talented they felt.
- 1:51:17Speaker 5: And the Patriots also.
- 1:51:18Speaker 4: Too, lost Lynn Dawson, their tight end pretty early in
- 1:51:20Speaker 4: that game. They came out throwing, trying not to run
- 1:51:23Speaker 4: into the brick wall, which got away from their identity,
- 1:51:25Speaker 4: and we saw how it all snowballed on them. But
- 1:51:28Speaker 4: a lot of respect, I mean, I talked to Tip
- 1:51:30Speaker 4: about it. Tip was like I was so interested in
- 1:51:31Speaker 4: afterwards he had to like go get the playbook after
- 1:51:33Speaker 4: the season and really dive into understand.
- 1:51:35Speaker 7: It a little bit.
- 1:51:35Speaker 4: But likee F said, it's just I don't have the
- 1:51:38Speaker 4: ex centers and guards cover them up and.
- 1:51:40Speaker 3: Knowledge the barefront was the big thing, you know, like
- 1:51:43Speaker 3: like du said, like the three guys across the middle
- 1:51:46Speaker 3: of the defensive line covering the centers and the guard
- 1:51:49Speaker 3: or guard and guards and centers single high most of
- 1:51:53Speaker 3: the time, one high safety. They had the two linebackers
- 1:51:56Speaker 3: on one point right on one side of the of
- 1:51:58Speaker 3: the formation too, which is like kind of unique. But
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: it was like basically just like a four to three
- 1:52:04Speaker 3: Like essentially, I.
- 1:52:05Speaker 4: Want to say too maybe and I don't know if
- 1:52:06Speaker 4: you guys remember this, but I feel like Washington's offense
- 1:52:09Speaker 4: eventually came around schematically to something which I might even
- 1:52:13Speaker 4: just been the single back set that really gave the
- 1:52:15Speaker 4: forty six problems.
- 1:52:16Speaker 5: There was like a schematic tack that it was they kind.
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: Of exped to do.
- 1:52:20Speaker 7: Was what Miami did to him. Miami shredded throw it
- 1:52:23Speaker 7: all over that game.
- 1:52:24Speaker 5: They lost.
- 1:52:24Speaker 6: Yeah, again, I don't I don't have the knowledge of
- 1:52:30Speaker 6: the exo's nose like Evan's talking about. I would just
- 1:52:32Speaker 6: say that I think a lot of teams could have
- 1:52:34Speaker 6: had that scheme and not had the success.
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: I mean, they had a lot of talent.
- 1:52:38Speaker 6: Harry Richard, Dan, Michael Singletary, Otis Wilson, Doug Playing, Gary Fencik.
- 1:52:43Speaker 7: Those were great players.
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: There's that other big defensive line Marshall Well refrigerated Perry Perry.
- 1:52:49Speaker 6: There was another one too well, Wilber. Yeah, they Wilbur
- 1:52:52Speaker 6: Marshall was uh was on that team too. It's another one.
- 1:52:55Speaker 7: They blitzed a lot like the line were immense.
- 1:52:58Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's.
- 1:53:00Speaker 2: Happy different era. Yeah, Craig and Charlotte last time, this
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: time last year, all anyone could talk about with Drake
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: May's footwork, which foot was forward? How many steps was
- 1:53:10Speaker 2: he dropping? Haven't heard a peep about it this year.
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: We know Josh in the past had Brady take shallower
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: drops and step up more in the pocket. With Will
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: Campbell having some issues with outside in rush moves, i'd
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: expect this would allow him to take shallower set sets
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: and protect better against inside moves. Wondering if you've seen
- 1:53:29Speaker 2: any adjustment by Drake from what he did last year.
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: Is his left foot still forward? And also note I
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: do wash my legs. Italian SUPs don't have mao and
- 1:53:39Speaker 2: boneless chicken wings are tenders.
- 1:53:42Speaker 7: Yeah, the trifector of dominance.
- 1:53:46Speaker 3: I'm not answered the football question after I just heard
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: that last line.
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: I'm out, wow, Wow, You're not going to answer left footfall.
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: So are we still worried about Drake May's footwork?
- 1:53:56Speaker 3: Yes, I will be forever worried about Drake May's footwork
- 1:53:59Speaker 3: because that just what these are the things that I
- 1:54:01Speaker 3: worry about. The drops in terms of the depth of
- 1:54:05Speaker 3: the drop that is tied to the routes that they're calling.
- 1:54:08Speaker 3: So like the depth of the drop I think was
- 1:54:12Speaker 3: more of a Brady thing than I would say that
- 1:54:14Speaker 3: it was like a system thing. A big part of
- 1:54:16Speaker 3: that with Brady is that he's not mobile, so like
- 1:54:19Speaker 3: he would set to a certain depth to you know,
- 1:54:22Speaker 3: help out his tackles because he's not going to help
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: him out by running. So that was a big aspect
- 1:54:27Speaker 3: of it. Too. Left foot forward, I would say, is
- 1:54:30Speaker 3: probably gonna stick. But you know, I think a lot
- 1:54:34Speaker 3: of what they're trying to do is carry over. You
- 1:54:36Speaker 3: know Ashton Grant was in Cleveland last year with Stefanski
- 1:54:39Speaker 3: and and try to keep it as much the same
- 1:54:41Speaker 3: from a footwork standpoint as they possibly can. So I'm
- 1:54:45Speaker 3: not worried about it by any means, but I'm always
- 1:54:47Speaker 3: going to be watching his feet. I mean, that's that's
- 1:54:50Speaker 3: a big part of his game, is making sure that
- 1:54:52Speaker 3: that stays rhythmic and stays on time and he stays
- 1:54:55Speaker 3: fluid with his motion and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: Speaking Fresno, going back to our original discussion of free agents,
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: he says, it's a question do you sacrifice more wins
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: this season if the free agency class mostly bus or
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: if Drake May is unimproved, Probably the ladder.
- 1:55:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I'd probably lean the ladder.
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: If he's unimproved.
- 1:55:16Speaker 6: I just yeah, if he's like he was last year,
- 1:55:19Speaker 6: I don't think they're gonna win that many more games
- 1:55:20Speaker 6: than they did last year. They'll probably win more because
- 1:55:23Speaker 6: I think they're better coached and you do have better
- 1:55:25Speaker 6: talent around him. But if he plays poorly and turns
- 1:55:28Speaker 6: the ball over and to you a point, Mike that
- 1:55:29Speaker 6: you've been harping on, isn't what he needs to be
- 1:55:32Speaker 6: Latent games when games are decided.
- 1:55:35Speaker 7: Your record's not going to be great.
- 1:55:37Speaker 4: Do you think that there's a large percentage of Patriot
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: fans that are just head in the sand?
- 1:55:43Speaker 5: Drake May is awesome. Yeah, we have our quarterback and
- 1:55:45Speaker 5: he's gonna be great this year, you know, Like I
- 1:55:47Speaker 5: just yeah, I think for me, he's the story this
- 1:55:50Speaker 5: year to me.
- 1:55:51Speaker 4: And I think Rabel is over overshadowing that as the
- 1:55:53Speaker 4: new coach and then all the new system. But really
- 1:55:56Speaker 4: how this team wins or loses it, it's just you guys.
- 1:56:00Speaker 6: Know, I love to sort of tease the you know,
- 1:56:03Speaker 6: the over the top, you know optimism Patriots fans. This
- 1:56:08Speaker 6: isn't even just Patriots fans. Like how many times have
- 1:56:11Speaker 6: you seen different national things this year that are listing?
- 1:56:14Speaker 6: You know, I saw something on Twitter yesterday. These eight
- 1:56:18Speaker 6: guys are poised for a huge year or two jump
- 1:56:21Speaker 6: and you know, Drake May is one of them. Peter Schrager,
- 1:56:25Speaker 6: I think, you know, I had identified him as absolutely all. Like,
- 1:56:29Speaker 6: I think he's given credit for doing things last year
- 1:56:32Speaker 6: that he didn't do quite frankly, and maybe that's because
- 1:56:36Speaker 6: he had so little around him that they just automatically
- 1:56:38Speaker 6: extrapolate and say if he just had a little help,
- 1:56:41Speaker 6: he would be x times better, which I don't think
- 1:56:45Speaker 6: is absurd. I think he had very little help and
- 1:56:48Speaker 6: was able to make some plays, just not enough. But
- 1:56:51Speaker 6: I don't I think Patriots fans and National fans in
- 1:56:56Speaker 6: general believe that Drake May has ascended to a level
- 1:56:59Speaker 6: he has in this I.
- 1:57:00Speaker 3: Just wonder what, like, what's our bar though, because like
- 1:57:05Speaker 3: Justin Herbert is a great quarterback. He hasn't won anything,
- 1:57:09Speaker 3: but we can all say we watch Justin Herbert, it's
- 1:57:12Speaker 3: a good quarterback. That's a really talented quarterback. If Drake
- 1:57:15Speaker 3: May is that's the level that he gets to is
- 1:57:19Speaker 3: like a Justin Herbert level where they're a playoff team
- 1:57:22Speaker 3: but he's not winning the super Bowl?
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: Is that?
- 1:57:24Speaker 3: Are we that they?
- 1:57:26Speaker 2: But are we? Like?
- 1:57:26Speaker 3: No one's doubting that the Chargers have their quarter like
- 1:57:29Speaker 3: nor Herbert their quarter.
- 1:57:30Speaker 6: But if I would say if May plays it to
- 1:57:32Speaker 6: that level, I would say that that he's made significant improvements.
- 1:57:36Speaker 3: Yeah, No, I agree. I just think that are you
- 1:57:38Speaker 3: asking if that's good enough?
- 1:57:40Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:57:40Speaker 3: Because I think that like a lot of people are
- 1:57:42Speaker 3: going to look at that and say, you know, kind
- 1:57:44Speaker 3: of like they do with with bloodsoe frankly, like they're
- 1:57:46Speaker 3: gonna sit there and say, fine player, but not great player.
- 1:57:50Speaker 7: Apologize. It's just like that's a very rational time.
- 1:57:53Speaker 3: I don't know, like I feel like that bar is high,
- 1:57:56Speaker 3: you know, in terms of the winning aspect of it.
- 1:57:59Speaker 4: I mean, on him, Patriot fans aren't gonna want to
- 1:58:02Speaker 4: be the Philip Rivers team of the twenty twenties and
- 1:58:04Speaker 4: have a good quarterback. But you're just never gonna be
- 1:58:07Speaker 4: Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. You're always gonna be and
- 1:58:09Speaker 4: they don't want that thing wan to you better than Josh.
- 1:58:11Speaker 6: But do you fall short because your quarterback isn't good enough?
- 1:58:14Speaker 6: Or do you fall short because your team just can't
- 1:58:16Speaker 6: get over the hump?
- 1:58:17Speaker 13: Right?
- 1:58:17Speaker 6: So I'm not help bent like it has to be
- 1:58:19Speaker 6: a title or bust. Like I think Dan Marino is
- 1:58:22Speaker 6: pretty good. I know that's a controversial take. I'll take
- 1:58:24Speaker 6: Dan Marino any day.
- 1:58:25Speaker 7: Of the week. He never want anything, never want a
- 1:58:27Speaker 7: damn thing.
- 1:58:28Speaker 6: I'll take Dan Marino as my quarterback and say it's
- 1:58:31Speaker 6: on you, right, Patriots, to make sure that you're good
- 1:58:34Speaker 6: enough to augment this guy right and make sure that
- 1:58:37Speaker 6: he has enough around him to win, yep. And if
- 1:58:39Speaker 6: you can't, you can't. I'm not gonna say I'm gonna
- 1:58:42Speaker 6: be happy if they never win, But.
- 1:58:44Speaker 3: The long term outlook is really what I'm getting at
- 1:58:46Speaker 3: the Chargers.
- 1:58:47Speaker 6: I don't think don't don't win because of Justin Herbert.
- 1:58:49Speaker 6: Now maybe I'm wrong. It's his career is still relatively young.
- 1:58:53Speaker 6: Maybe he's just one of those guys that his desk
- 1:58:56Speaker 6: just enough.
- 1:58:56Speaker 3: To look like quarterbacks are to me, are like on
- 1:58:59Speaker 3: such a binary scale of like they're either the guys
- 1:59:01Speaker 3: you have to pay or guys that aren't the guy
- 1:59:03Speaker 3: and like, you know, friend's guy, Trevor Lawrence. It's like
- 1:59:06Speaker 3: Trevor Laurren's making fifty million dollars to quarterback the Jaguars
- 1:59:10Speaker 3: because you can see it when you watch him play.
- 1:59:12Speaker 3: He looks the part of a franchise quarterback. But they
- 1:59:15Speaker 3: don't win. So it's like, is that gonna be Drake's
- 1:59:17Speaker 3: future or is he going to be able to be
- 1:59:20Speaker 3: a winner, like a true winner? And I think that
- 1:59:22Speaker 3: that's gonna be hard with her.
- 1:59:24Speaker 4: What's his dynamic with Josh Allen? That to me, is
- 1:59:27Speaker 4: he the little brother who can't ever quite beat him?
- 1:59:29Speaker 4: Or is he somebody who's nipping at his heels in chilling.
- 1:59:31Speaker 6: Joe Burrow and not be good enough because Cincinnati's inept
- 1:59:35Speaker 6: and can't get him over the hump.
- 1:59:36Speaker 2: Good good, good comp. Speaking of comp's most interesting Patriots
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: fan of the world on the Devers trade, comp says
- 1:59:43Speaker 2: Richard Seymour getting traded for a fourth rounder.
- 1:59:46Speaker 3: Richard Seymour was way more towards the end of his
- 1:59:48Speaker 3: career though, like Dev's in the prime of his career,
- 1:59:50Speaker 3: is like twenty six years old.
- 1:59:52Speaker 7: Yeah, all right, that's a good comp.
- 1:59:54Speaker 2: It's not bad. That's gonna be it for this edition
- 1:59:58Speaker 2: of Patriots Unfiltered. We'll be back on Thursday at noon
