- 0:00Hello and welcome back to an episode of Bands with Lorencia.
- 0:02How are you all doing if you're doing great for today's episode,
- 0:05I want to talk about media ownership or ownership or
- 0:09intellectual property ownership. Now, this conversation started
- 0:15recently or it has been going on, but we saw the effect or the
- 0:21negative effect of not owning your own IP, your own
- 0:25intellectual property. When Papa Ajaz School came out,
- 0:30he granted an interview to Lucky Hoodoo and that interview has
- 0:36been going viral because people are talking about how people who
- 0:42have worked in movies, media production for years, we're
- 0:47talking about people who built the Nollywood that we have
- 0:50today. People who built the
- 0:53entertainment industry that we have today in Nigeria, they are
- 0:57suffering. Now before I go for that, let me
- 1:00just play that video of Lucky Udu interviewing Papa Ajasco for
- 1:06you to understand what we're talking about.
- 1:08How many of you remember this man, Papa Jasco?
- 1:16Hi, my name is Abiadu Richard Ayerinka, popularly known as
- 1:21Papa Ajasco. Yes, people love Papa Jasco.
- 1:26This is to my fans and my viewers out there.
- 1:31People are saying over the years now they have not been watching
- 1:34Papa Jasco. Well, it's because of you know,
- 1:37this all this social media and the network, this thing like not
- 1:42unlike before that they watch us on local TV like AIT, like this
- 1:46thing. But right now we are no more
- 1:48there. But I'm still saying please keep
- 1:51on watching Papa Jasco. I need you my fans out there.
- 1:55Oh. My goodness, I can't believe
- 1:59this is you. Where have you been?
- 2:01I've been around. Around where we don't see you
- 2:04anymore. In Lagos in TV's you know
- 2:08they're still working as an actor, especially on Papa Jazz
- 2:13coin com yes well I'm not on social media because right now
- 2:20we're always busy moving around and want to be on social media.
- 2:23You must have dedicate time for it.
- 2:26So. So that's it.
- 2:29Papa Jazz School. When I was small, we saw his
- 2:32watch him on our TV screen. Every household in Nigeria would
- 2:35watch Papa Jazz School, but you know when the attention moved
- 2:39from TV to using our mobile phones to watch videos, maybe
- 2:44Papa Jasco didn't move along with us.
- 2:47He doesn't even have a social media account of his own because
- 2:50he's been busy. So do you suggest you work with
- 2:52Wally Adenuga Production? Yeah, I still work with Wally
- 2:55Adenuga Productions currently now we are a new concept
- 3:01entirely is on that's Jensy Papi Papa Jasco.
- 3:06I was a truster my head. So we are still on, but the
- 3:11major problem is that, well, I'm not moving.
- 3:14And why people are not seeing me where they're supposed to see me
- 3:17is, is because that particular character, that particular
- 3:22character has been registered by Rally Adinuga, an employee that
- 3:26wants to use me outside. They want to use me with the
- 3:28character, with everything that I have.
- 3:31But it has never been easy for me.
- 3:33And that's why you don't see me on advert, you don't see me on
- 3:37the board and all that. So it's painful.
- 3:40So the character has been trademarked by the company you
- 3:43work for. Yes, exactly you.
- 3:44Don't have exclusive rights to even use it.
- 3:47Good afternoon to all my fans out there watching this video.
- 3:50I just want to say thank you very much for the calls, for the
- 3:55financial support and my special fans goes to Lucky Voodoo,
- 4:01Kingmaker, to the enemies, the Silver and all the blogs out
- 4:07there. Thank you very much and God
- 4:10bless you all. Please kindly follow my new
- 4:13account on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok at Bondu Alaska
- 4:21Underscore for more entertainment and laughter.
- 4:26Now this is Papa Aja School. I mean, we all grew up watching
- 4:31Papa Aja School. Papa Aja School and Company,
- 4:36manufactured by Wale Adenuga Production, Nigeria's number one
- 4:42humour merchants is the best medicine.
- 4:47That was an anthem that we all, you know, we grew up watching.
- 4:51You know, our parents, our guidance, they allowed us to
- 4:55watch it because I mean it's just humour.
- 5:00Now. According to Babaja School, Wale
- 5:04Adenuga trademarked Papa Ajazzo, he signed a contract and the
- 5:15contracts, According to him, he could only work with Papa
- 5:20Ajazzo. He said they shoot about 12
- 5:24episode per year and when they started, he was earning about
- 5:282500 naira. This was in 1997, you know, in
- 5:361997, I think that was when he started.
- 5:38So he said he was earning about 2500 naira.
- 5:42They increased it to 3000 to 5000 to 25,000.
- 5:46And currently he is earning 45,000 naira per episode.
- 5:53And According to him, per year they shoot about, you know, 10
- 5:56to 12 episodes per year. So he is basically like an
- 6:00employee earning 45,000 naira per month.
- 6:06This is a legend. This is a well round comedian.
- 6:12This is somebody who had entertained us.
- 6:15This is somebody who had inspired generation of actors,
- 6:19comedian or comedic actors or even comedians, stand up
- 6:24comedies. He had inspired the whole lot of
- 6:28people to go into movie production, comedy production
- 6:33and a whole lot of them. But he is not part of the
- 6:42generation or he was from the generation where they don't know
- 6:47about Internet. They, they grew up, you know, or
- 6:51they started making money or started working when there was
- 6:54no Internet. I think millennials were in a
- 6:58very strategic position whereby they grew up where there was no
- 7:03Internet. They also grew up where there
- 7:08was Internet. So we just basically
- 7:11transitioned from no Internet to Internet.
- 7:14So we could easily walk in both. We could we, we understand both
- 7:19worlds. We could understand the fact
- 7:22that OK, or I personally, I can understand that he just wanted
- 7:28to be an actor and he doesn't understand anything about social
- 7:31media and all that. And I can also understand, you
- 7:36know, somebody who maybe has children who was able to guide,
- 7:41was able to help him out and create social media presence.
- 7:47But the challenge there is the contract that he signed,
- 7:51According to him. Papa Ajazu was trademarked by
- 7:56Wali Adenuga. He the costume, everything.
- 8:02He cannot act Papa Ajazzo in a different movie for his kids or
- 8:08play Papa Ajazzo in a play or maybe take adverts for Papa
- 8:13Ajazzo. A lot of people were attacking
- 8:18Wali Adenuga, but at the end of the day, it is, it is business,
- 8:22it is contracts. He created the brand Papa Aja
- 8:27School. He created everything and he
- 8:29employed Papa Aja School to play the character.
- 8:37I can't even remember his name, you know, because we know him as
- 8:40Papa Aja School. So anybody that is trying to
- 8:43contract him or contact him for any business, they want Papa Aja
- 8:48School. But he's constrained by the
- 8:51contracts. A whole lot of people are
- 8:55signing contract. Let's just see because people
- 8:58are rallying around him. He shared a video thanking
- 9:01everybody. People sent him money.
- 9:03He shared his account details. I saw a pastor who who was
- 9:07touched by the whole thing. He said, listen, this man made
- 9:10my childhood. He said everybody, anybody that
- 9:12knows his account number should send to him.
- 9:15So people have been, you know, raising awareness and sending
- 9:20money to him. Now the bolt of contention is
- 9:24that this is Papa Jasco who is now coming out to raise
- 9:29awareness. They, a lot of people are in
- 9:32this situation. A whole lot of people, you know,
- 9:35have signed contracts whereby their hands, their feet are
- 9:40tied. They can't do anything apart
- 9:42from the contract. I was watching a show.
- 9:45This is recent. This is UK media only.
- 9:51She is a presenter on a trend Central Central.
- 9:55Trend Central is the UK YouTube channel.
- 9:59They do interviews, they do shows, they have back chats.
- 10:03They, I mean they will do a whole lot of things.
- 10:05Blue therapy. It's from trend Central.
- 10:08So she joined Trend Central, the contract, you know, they told
- 10:14her, you know, you're going to work on this, we're going to
- 10:17make you a star, we're going to do this, we're going to do that.
- 10:20And then she started working. There was no pay because of what
- 10:24was promised to her. Meanwhile, Trend Central, they
- 10:29were making money and she was not being paid.
- 10:34Later they brought a contract to her and the contract stated,
- 10:38which is why I'm mentioning this bring you this.
- 10:42This is an example because her contract said they're going to
- 10:45own her image, they're going to own her name.
- 10:49Now remember Papa Jasco, Papa Jasco was created by Walia
- 10:54Dinuga. So he has, you know, every right
- 10:57to own because he created that is his intellectual property.
- 11:03Now in the case of media, only because she has been working
- 11:08with them, they had made her, you know, famous.
- 11:13Everybody now knows Midday, they wanted to own her name, they
- 11:18wanted to own her image forever. So if Midday wants to like
- 11:27retake, if she had signed the contract and she she wanted to
- 11:31leave Trent Central, she would have to buy her name, which she
- 11:36mentioned that a whole lot of people did.
- 11:39You know, you sign contracts and then you have to buy your name.
- 11:42You have to buy your image from the the company or the media
- 11:49house or even record label that happens.
- 11:52Kiss Daniel's own. It was kiss Daniel.
- 11:58Then he for him to be able to still use the name, he has to
- 12:02change it from S to Z. So this happens on a daily
- 12:06basis. This should be as a, this should
- 12:09be a lesson to anybody who wants to work in media, who wants to,
- 12:15you know, it's work in entertainment industry because
- 12:18it's easier to get carried away. It's easier to think, OK, they,
- 12:23they must have my best interest at heart.
- 12:26Let me just go ahead. Definitely when they start
- 12:29making money, they're going to increase my money.
- 12:31I am very sure. Maybe Provider School was
- 12:35promised that when the show start making money, they're
- 12:38going to pay him more money. It doesn't happen like that
- 12:42because at the end of the day, it is business and people.
- 12:46There's no there's no emotions in business.
- 12:49Especially somebody who is not Walia de Nuga probably did not
- 12:54even know how much Papa Jasco is earning.
- 13:00So because there are managers, there are production, there are
- 13:05marketers, listen there, there's ACEO.
- 13:08So he probably does not know what they were earning.
- 13:16People exploit people, people exploit vulnerabilities.
- 13:21People take advantage of people. I am not saying that they took
- 13:25advantage of Paja school because at the end of the day, he's been
- 13:30working with Walia de Nuga for since 1997.
- 13:39So we're talking about 30 years. So he he's he's been at least
- 13:46he's been employed and he says they work about 12 episode per
- 13:50year. He could have diverted, he could
- 13:53have done other things, but depending on the contract that
- 13:57you signed, media only was told that she couldn't even open.
- 14:02She couldn't do TikTok, she couldn't do YouTube, she
- 14:06couldn't do Facebook. Like as long as she's with Trend
- 14:11Central, she couldn't do anything outside Trend Central,
- 14:17which was probably the contract that Papa Ajazco signed.
- 14:22Before you sign any contracts, there's ChatGPT, put it there.
- 14:29Let's chat advise you. If you can't afford a lawyer, it
- 14:34is very advisable to go through a lawyer.
- 14:37But let's say if you can't afford a lawyer, Crayon, I think
- 14:42that's his name, who was signed to Don Jazzy is currently
- 14:45calling out Don Jazzy saying that he made over $250 million
- 14:51and he never got anything in return.
- 14:55Why? It is business.
- 14:58He signed the contract. There's no emotion in business,
- 15:05which is why you have to be ruthless.
- 15:08You have to protect yourself. You have to listen.
- 15:13Anybody that's coming to you knows you have something, you
- 15:16have something to offer. And sometimes doing it on your
- 15:20own, you might not be able to to breakthrough, you may not.
- 15:25It may take you years, decades, sometimes even after that
- 15:31decade, you you may not even make anything out of it.
- 15:34So you're now in between, you know, what do you choose?
- 15:42Your choices matters a lot. Don't let them own you don't.
- 15:47It's like selling your soul to the devil.
- 15:51Don't let it happen. If you're creating a YouTube
- 15:54channel and you're thinking, OK, before, if I have to do this on
- 15:58my own, it will take time, it will take years, it will it will
- 16:02take resources. Start from somewhere.
- 16:06And if you're going to sign with somebody else, make sure that
- 16:10the contract that you sign, you can still be building something
- 16:13on your own. Don't sign any contract that
- 16:15will tell you once you're with us, you cannot do anything else.
- 16:20That is slavery. That is slavery.
- 16:25We all know the story of Mac Angel.
- 16:29Mac Angel, the contract that they signed, that he signed with
- 16:33people he was working with was more like slavery.
- 16:37They couldn't even speak Emmanuela right now.
- 16:40After a million Mac Angel was making over $300,000 per month
- 16:48on YouTube and he was paying Emmanuela 30,000 per month.
- 16:54That is how ruthless some people can be.
- 16:57Some people would carry people along while some people would
- 17:01just be like you know what I mean?
- 17:04It listen, it's not easy for you to sit down and build something.
- 17:08Trust me it is not easy because if it was easy everybody would
- 17:13do it. But sometimes people have to be
- 17:18human. If you are making $300,000 per
- 17:23month, how can you pay your *30,030 thousand naira per
- 17:30month? Emmanuel?
- 17:34And now she's trying to do things on her own.
- 17:38You know, she's young, so she could she could do things on her
- 17:45own. And she mentioned that people
- 17:48that worked with Mark Angel mentioned that they couldn't
- 17:52like you can't work with Mike Angel company and then you're
- 17:55going to maybe macaroni or you're going to Naz boy or
- 18:00working with Naz boy. No, he owns you at that point.
- 18:05So whatever is you're tied to that contract.
- 18:09Read your contract before signing.
- 18:12No matter how desperate you are, no matter how how you think, sit
- 18:20down and think. Listen that person, it took that
- 18:24person time to build. You can also build on your own
- 18:29or you can sign a contract. You can negotiate contracts.
- 18:33I think people are just desperate and they are eager to
- 18:36sign contracts and they don't even look at those things.
- 18:39You can negotiate a contract to say, yes, I am working with you,
- 18:43but I want to also be doing my own thing.
- 18:47If Papa Jasco was working 12 episodes per year and he is
- 18:53maybe doing something else then, but he's like a father.
- 18:59So we, we, we don't even want to, you know, now let us learn
- 19:05from these things. Let us learn.
- 19:09New media is here to stay. It takes time to to build media.
- 19:16It it, it takes time, it takes effort, it takes resources, it
- 19:20takes money. So anybody that has built theirs
- 19:25and want to control everybody, want to control, you know, make
- 19:30everybody's slaves to them. I wouldn't even bash them
- 19:32because at the end of the day, it is business.
- 19:34It is what you have agreed to be wise.
- 19:39Let us be wise so that in the next 30 years we will not come
- 19:43on social media and be crying that we signed one contract, it
- 19:48doesn't work or it did not favour us.
- 19:51Let us be wise. I am wishing Papa just called
- 19:54the best people can search for him on social media and donate
- 19:58to him. We're also waiting for Wale
- 20:01Adenuga. Wale Adenuga, we're waiting for
- 20:06you to say something because. He is Papaja School and I would
- 20:13like if people can contribute, contribute money to buy his
- 20:21image to buy that Papaja School from Wali Adenuga.
- 20:26But I don't think Wali Adenuga would be because it's not about
- 20:29money for him. It's not about money.
- 20:32If he's going to release Papaja School, it is going to be based
- 20:35on, you know, just out of the goodness of his heart.
- 20:41But Papa just go is making him money and I don't think he is
- 20:46going to do that anytime soon now that, you know, it has gone
- 20:49viral. So everybody wants to watch Papa
- 20:51just go anyway. Let me know what you think.
- 20:54Do you think that's one of the most important thing in this new
- 20:59media is ownership and also contracts?
- 21:03Because if you own, then you have, you know, all the control.
- 21:09But then it will take you years, decades, resources, money to
- 21:14build. But if you must work with
- 21:18somebody, read the contracts, review the contracts, paste it
- 21:24on ChatGPT, listen to advice. Don't be in a rush.
- 21:30Make sure that the contract, whatever contract you're
- 21:32signing, you can do other things.
- 21:35Nobody's owning your image, Nobody's owning your likeness,
- 21:38nobody's owning your name. Anyway, let me know what you
- 21:43think. Thank you very much for watching
- 21:44this episode. Please like, like, like and
- 21:46share. Subscribe to my channel.
- 21:48Thank you very much for watching.
- 21:50Bye bye.
