- 0:02Well, welcome back everybody to the Daily Ripples
- 0:06podcast, and I'm Pastor Mike. I am your
- 0:10secondary co-host today. Our primary co-host
- 0:14is going to be Corey. Corey, welcome back. Hey guys.
- 0:17And our host is actually a guest host today, and that's
- 0:22going to be our good friend Paris, who's back with us. And so we're going
- 0:25to quickly turn it over to Paris and let him kick us off for today.
- 0:29Hey everyone, how y'all doing today? Um, I'm Paris,
- 0:32by the way. We're gonna start off with August 10th.
- 0:36Seeing the People I Hurt. The Stone.
- 0:40Real repentance begins when I stop seeing
- 0:43my actions as mistakes and start seeing the people they
- 0:47affect. Ripple 1. Practical. Today I will remember
- 0:51that my actions, uh, that my actions always touch
- 0:54other lives. It is easy to minimize past
- 0:58behavior when I think only about what I did.
- 1:01Growth comes when I honestly consider
- 1:05who was affected and how they were harmed. Ripple 2,
- 1:08Spiritual. As I look honestly at the people
- 1:12I have hurt, the Holy Spirit opens my eyes to the
- 1:16impact of my actions and gives me the courage
- 1:20to pursue healing where I can. The Father sees
- 1:24every person as valuable and worthy of love,
- 1:27and Jesus teaches me to view others not as obstacles
- 1:31or background characters, but as neighbors created in God's
- 1:35image. Yeah,
- 1:38of course, you know, this is August,
- 1:41so, you know, the first thing that came to mind was
- 1:44like, you know, Step 8. Right. You know, when we made a list
- 1:49of persons we harmed and all those sorts of things. And so when I
- 1:52started reading, I really went to the 12 and 12 in this,
- 1:56on this passage, because I really like it.
- 2:00On page 77, it talks about
- 2:04that. At the bottom it says,
- 2:07if I can pull it up, it said, this reopening of emotion
- 2:11wounds, some old, some perhaps forgotten, and some still painfully
- 2:16festering, will at first
- 2:19look at the purposeless and pointless piece
- 2:23of surgery. But if a willing start is made,
- 2:27then the great advantage of doing this will so quickly reveal themselves
- 2:31and the pain will be lessened as the one
- 2:35obstacle after another melts away. You know,
- 2:38man, I used to, I mean, before I came into the rooms of recovery
- 2:42and all that stuff, you know, Of course I hurt people.
- 2:45Of course I done did wrong, you know?
- 2:49But I noticed with doing this work and doing
- 2:54the program, doing a step format where it teach me how to live
- 2:58a life today, you know, it really switches my thought
- 3:03processes. Like this thinking, thinking, I don't really think
- 3:07about the old, I mean the bad. Stuff I do. But I— of
- 3:10course we got to brighten, we got to look deep inside to see where
- 3:15we have gone. But that's my first thought. What y'all have? What? Hey,
- 3:19hey, um, no, when I was reading it, because it was talking about in
- 3:23here, it says, uh,
- 3:26it says real repentance begins when I stop seeing my actions as
- 3:30mistakes and start seeing the people they affected.
- 3:34And I look at that and I think, well, you know, We're not—
- 3:38because maybe, you know, I did just accidentally did this or did this. And,
- 3:42you know, maybe it was just like, you know, it was— what is it?
- 3:46It's like, you know, when you're going into war, it's casualties.
- 3:51Yeah, there's casualties. I mean, there's innocent bystanders, right?
- 3:54Yep. Yep. And so, like, you know, and there's— and people make mistakes. And,
- 3:58you know, I've looked at it like that, you know, for my whole life.
- 4:01And, well, and I've talked about this on here before, but, you know, when I
- 4:04view this stuff that, like, And I hear this word part and
- 4:08it's like, well, I played my— they like, you know, this was my part in
- 4:12it. And when I start looking at the word part, I automatically look at,
- 4:15well, if you played a part and I played a part, you played
- 4:20a bigger part because that's right. It works. The house always wins. Yeah.
- 4:23Yeah. My ego does that. My ego's always done that. And like,
- 4:27and maybe not the beginning of it, but you give me 2, 3,
- 4:304 days after I thought about that for some more and my ego's rebuilt.
- 4:34At first it was my fault. My, my played the biggest part.
- 4:37Now, right, it's your fault. And really, man, why would
- 4:42I even go make amends to you anyways? Right. And so I think
- 4:45that's why it's so— or I'll happily apologize to them as
- 4:49soon as they apologize. Absolutely. And that's— yeah, that— but that's,
- 4:52you know, that's how most people operate. And it's transactional. And they can't—
- 4:56and they can't operate like this. But in the big book,
- 4:59you know, it tells me if we were to live, we had to be free
- 5:02of anger. Yeah, the grouch and the brainstorm were not for us. They may be
- 5:06the dubious luxuries of normal men, and that's normal people. And normal people get
- 5:10to operate on that level, and that's cool. And I remember talking to a guy
- 5:14the other day and he was like, well, you know, we're all God's kids and
- 5:18this is how— I said, well, you know, man, you know, all God's kids then
- 5:21go and rob and steal and hurt people and do this and this and
- 5:25this. And I have to operate at this level so I don't ever— because I
- 5:28don't ever want to do that again. And I want to live with some peace.
- 5:31But I think the most important part is on the next page, on page 67
- 5:35in the Big Book, because it says, we placed them before us on black
- 5:39and white. We admitted our wrongs honestly,
- 5:43and we were willing to set these matters straight. See, after I put
- 5:47it on black and white, I don't argue with it anymore. After it's on pen
- 5:51and paper, it's set in stone, and there's no argument there. And I'm not going
- 5:54to go scribble out as my ego's building. And after I do that,
- 5:58you know, there's a piece of me that's left on that paper. And all
- 6:01I have to do after that is go do the actual work and let's go
- 6:04face the people. But I think that black and white's
- 6:09one of the most important parts in this because if I can't see it on
- 6:11paper and it's up here, man,
- 6:14when it starts rolling around, it tends into, hey man, I'm going to go
- 6:18make that amends anyways. Yeah. And I think that's why
- 6:23it's important and it's said through the program of recovery all the
- 6:27time that the 12 steps are worked in order.
- 6:33Because me, that step 8 that Paris mentioned at the top
- 6:36of the episode about making a list of all the people that
- 6:40I'd harmed and becoming willing to make amends to them all, that flows
- 6:44naturally from the inventory that I did. And it flows naturally
- 6:48from the 5th step when I sit down with another person and that person points
- 6:53out, sometimes coaxes me to share things that I would not have
- 6:56otherwise shared. And in the process of that, also assists in in pointing
- 7:00out through that sponsorship process of
- 7:04what my part is and who I do owe an amends to,
- 7:08because we need other people to be able to see what we've done wrong sometimes.
- 7:12Because like we've been talking about, and I like Corey that you brought in the
- 7:16casualties of war, because that played in exactly with my scriptural
- 7:20grounding for this that comes in. Y'all familiar with King
- 7:23David back in the Old Testament of the Bible? And so,
- 7:27you know, King David, he'd been, well, he slew Goliath,
- 7:31you know, with stone and slingshot. So there's that story. And then,
- 7:34you know, he was anointed by Samuel to replace Saul
- 7:38as king. So he had some tension with Saul and David coming
- 7:41up. And then in 2 Samuel, by this point, he's the king, you know,
- 7:44he's the king of the Israelites. And he had
- 7:48already done just some horrible stuff, you know.
- 7:52And so there was a prophet named Nathan, and in 2 Samuel 12,
- 7:56in the beginning of it, just kind of read the story a little bit.
- 7:59It said, the Lord sent Nathan to David, and Nathan being
- 8:03the prophet to David the king. Now when he came to
- 8:07him, he said, there were 2 men in a certain town, one rich and the
- 8:10other poor. The rich man had a very large number of sheep
- 8:14and cattle, but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb
- 8:18he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children.
- 8:21It shared his food, drank his cup, and even slept in his arms. It was
- 8:25like a daughter to him. Well, I guess they didn't have a good concept of
- 8:28pets back then, but anyway, now, or at least not
- 8:32indoor pets. But then it says, now a traveler came to the rich man,
- 8:36but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep
- 8:40or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him.
- 8:42Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared
- 8:47it for the one who had come to him. So David the king, it says,
- 8:50burned with anger against that man and said to Nathan, as surely as
- 8:54the Lord lives, the man who did this must die. He must pay for
- 8:58that lamb 4 times over because he did such a thing and had no pity.
- 9:01So David's pointing out from the story who was in the wrong.
- 9:05Then Nathan said to David— and here's the fun part— he said to the
- 9:09king, he said, you are the man. This is what the Lord, the God
- 9:13of Israel, says: I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the
- 9:17hand of Saul. I gave your master's house to you and your master's wives into
- 9:20your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if this had been too
- 9:24little, I would have given you even more. Why then,
- 9:28you might say, did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is
- 9:31evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took
- 9:35his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.
- 9:39So here we have the king who had played out that story that Nathan
- 9:43told him. Nathan told it to him as an example of somebody
- 9:47else, but he was cloaking his language as a prophet to speak to
- 9:50what David had done, because David, he had seen you
- 9:54know, I think it's Bathsheba was her name, seen her bathing
- 9:59nude across the rooftop. And he said he wanted that woman
- 10:03even though she was Uriah's wife and Uriah was the captain of his guard
- 10:06who he sent off to war so that Uriah would be killed so he could
- 10:09be with the woman. So that's some pretty shady stuff.
- 10:13Right. And so, but it just
- 10:16points out the fact that I'm sure up until that point, even King David
- 10:20saw what he had done as just a mistake. He probably even said, well,
- 10:22you know, I'm just human like everybody else. I mean, after all,
- 10:26she was pretty and she was naked and you'd have done the same thing.
- 10:29He didn't see the other people that he had hurt and he needed somebody else
- 10:33to point that out to him. And that's just like us sometimes. We can be
- 10:36just as, have our blinders on the same way and not see how our
- 10:40actions are impacting other people. Right. And that's why we
- 10:44have to remember, as the practical says, that our actions always touch other
- 10:48lives and not to try to minimize our past behavior
- 10:52and think about only our part, but The growth comes in considering who
- 10:56was affected and how they were harmed. And again, by the time we get to,
- 11:00if we're on the 8th step in recovery, we already have a good idea of
- 11:04what that is because we've already been doing the work. You know, one thing I
- 11:08think is, uh, is important in this whole
- 11:11process though, right? Because I was just looking at it in
- 11:15my head is this, and you know, you got your columns, your column is a
- 11:19name. What they did, how it affected
- 11:22you, right? And well, you know, and you put, you know, what you—
- 11:27how you, how you were selfish, dishonest, and all that stuff. But I was
- 11:30thinking about it kind of like the other side of that, because like I
- 11:34had the courtesy in my life to go write about how you affected my
- 11:38self-esteem, how you affected my pocketbook. And when I do
- 11:41that on the flip side, right, when I do that on the flip
- 11:45side of, you know, How I perceived that I affected their
- 11:49pocketbook, how I affected their self-esteem, their ambitions,
- 11:53and all that. Because that's how I do my inventory. I mean, that's how I
- 11:57do my amends. So on the front side of the card, I put
- 12:01who they are, what I did to them. And so on the back side,
- 12:05I'll put how I affected their ambitions, how I affected
- 12:09their personal relationships, because I did that with them already. And now
- 12:12I'm doing it the opposite side. And when I start doing that, and I found
- 12:17in this process, when I really start looking at that and how I affected them,
- 12:21man, I start seeing so many, because that opens the door to so many more
- 12:24people I affected in those majors, right? Because I called so many,
- 12:29and breaking it down I think is really important because I think that
- 12:34just the courtesy, just the courtesy
- 12:37to write down how I affected them because I already wrote
- 12:41down how these, all these people affected me, I thought, yeah,
- 12:45is a big thing for me. And that's where I saw— I mean, you're giving
- 12:47them the honor of actually trying to grow in empathy
- 12:52and compassion for other people, you know? Yeah. Because, because if
- 12:55I don't see how I've exactly how I've impacted another
- 12:59person through my bad actions, then I'm not ever going to stop and think about,
- 13:03well, that whole thing about doing unto others as you would have done unto
- 13:06you. Like, I clearly think about, as you pointed out, I clearly
- 13:10think about what they did to me and what they affected in me. So why
- 13:12wouldn't I think about it in reverse? Yeah. Yeah. I mean,
- 13:16I agree with both of y'all. I'm looking at the spiritual part of this and
- 13:20it says the Father sees every person as valuable and worthy of love.
- 13:24And I think of that, that's exactly where I'm
- 13:28at today because it says in the book, asking each morning
- 13:33in meditation that our Creator show us the ways of patience, tolerance,
- 13:37kindness, and love. And if You know, that's the thing.
- 13:40See, I could easily, you know, go back into
- 13:45the way I used to be, right? When I'm not showing that love.
- 13:48Can you? No, I mean, not now. I ain't gonna say easily, but I mean,
- 13:52if I don't practice this stuff I'm doing, then probably so. You know,
- 13:56I mean, yeah, you can get back to it if you don't practice. That's why
- 13:59I said asking each morning, right? You know, um, yeah, Corey,
- 14:03as he said, asking each morning, Corey. Come on.
- 14:07And then, you know, because I mean, I As I go through these rooms of
- 14:10recovery, people get a lot of time, right? And they
- 14:14get a lot of time and then they end up stop doing the daily maintenance
- 14:19of the spiritual growth. And that's the thing I've been working
- 14:23on a lot lately is praying and meditation.
- 14:26And it teaches me now to be kind even
- 14:31if someone hurts me. Today I have to be kind because
- 14:34it mean what What's so bad that they can do that? They're just a
- 14:38sick person. You know, that's what it teaches us. Um,
- 14:42and that's what I feel on this part right here. Um,
- 14:46yeah, but Paris, as you were, as you were saying that
- 14:50about especially about people that have a little bit of time and they stop doing
- 14:54the, the daily things, yeah, that's why it's been such a
- 14:57blessing to me in this season of my life, in this season of my
- 15:01life in recovery and everything that I've gone through in the past year I
- 15:05started, you know, I met both of you guys during this past year,
- 15:08really. I mean, I may have met you before, but we didn't really connect at
- 15:12that point. But once we really connected, because both of you guys are,
- 15:15you know, this go-round in sobriety, I would still consider you to be fairly new.
- 15:19You've got some years under your belt, but you're not in the decades,
- 15:23you know, kind of thing, the old-timer category. No. But you guys both
- 15:26have just such a drive, you know, for helping others.
- 15:30And I'm not trying to fluff you all up or give you ego, but it's
- 15:33really been a motivation to me as somebody who's been in
- 15:37the program and sober for a few more years to see that energy.
- 15:41Because this is what I felt back when I was at y'all's,
- 15:44you know what I mean? Like back when I was first new to the program,
- 15:47the first few years when I was so excited about it. And yeah, there were
- 15:50bumps along the way, but just having that energy behind it. So yeah,
- 15:54y'all keep coming back and doing what you're doing for sure, because you never know
- 15:57who you might be inspiring. You want
- 16:01to send it with a prayer? Yeah, we can start with a prayer. Um,
- 16:04Father God, help me see others as you see them.
- 16:08Through your Holy Spirit, show me where I have caused harm
- 16:12and give me the courage to make things right.
- 16:15Shape my life through the example of Jesus and teach me to
- 16:19walk in honesty, humility, and love.
- 16:22Amen.
