- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's dive into today's show.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Now I don't need to tell you why pricing is important.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Yes, we want to show up, and yes, we want to help as many people as we possibly can through what we have to teach, but also we want to make money for our efforts, and the price we charge for our online course will determine how much money we're going to make in the long run.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: So when it comes to getting the price right for your online course, it can be really tricky because one size does not fit all.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: If you charge too little, then it can put your course at risk because it gives it a disadvantage because of the way it may be perceived.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And this perception could be that it offers low value, and that's why you're charging too little.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: But then if you charge too much, you may struggle to make sales and get your online course in front of the right audience.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: So getting that balance is really tricky, and there isn't one size fits all because there are so many deciding factors in how you then go ahead and set a price for your online course.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: So there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to pricing your course because courses can range from£5 to£5,000.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: It all depends on the type of course that you're creating, the value that you're providing, your intended audience, and what they are prepared to pay, your experience and the pricing strategy that you choose to use.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Now, I know when you first create your course, it's really tempting to go in low and to choose a really low price for your course because it's your first course, and it may be that you don't feel confident about charging more of a premium price.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Now, the problem with this is that if you charge a low price for your online course, your students may feel that what you're offering doesn't offer much value because you're charging it out so low, it will downgrade the perceived value of what you have to offer in your course.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: So don't fall into the trap of believing that just because you are selling your knowledge online that it's not worth as much as you delivering it in person, and therefore the price needs to be lower because this really isn't true.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Your knowledge, your skills, and expertise are incredibly valuable, and as such, they should be charged for accordingly.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Now, you also need to take into account that the money you are making by selling your online course will, of course, need to cover your expenses that you have incurred whilst creating your online course.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: And if you go in too low, the danger is that you're not going to make that money back and you're gonna find yourself out of pocket and not making any profit.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: And we need profit in our business to grow and to scale, so there needs to be money left over for your efforts.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Now, this is going to directly impact the level of marketing that you invest in if you have no money available at the end of it because you haven't made the money from selling your online course.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: So you need to make sure that whatever price you set, not only does it cover your expenses, it covers your time, but also it gives you money left over so that you can reinvest money into getting your course in front of more people.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Now, the other danger about charging too little for your course is that if you don't make money from your course, then the chances are you're going to end up giving up.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And you would have spent so long creating your online course, pulling all that content together and getting it to a place where you can sell it, and then the thought of giving up is just soul destroying because you've spent so much time, energy, and effort creating something that the world needs, and so that's another reason why not to go in too low with your pricing because you will end up feeling as though what you've done is not worth it, and that's the last thing you want to be thinking, and the last place you want to be.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: You don't want to end up regretting the fact that you've spent so much time creating this online course because you're not making the money that you deserve from it.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: So don't price your course too low where you think you're going to get the sales because that might not necessarily be the case.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Now, another reason to avoid charging a really low price is because you are going to have competition.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: There's no getting away from that.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: We're in business, there's always competition, and your competition may be selling courses as well.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Now, if you're going too low, you're going to be competing on price, and you don't want to be competing on price.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: That's the last place you want to be.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: You want to be competing on value and not price.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: So never compromise what you are selling for a low price.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: You never want to be the cheapest on the market.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: It's not a great strategy, and it will end up ruining your business in the long run.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: You do not want to be seen as being the cheap and cheerful option because it will not only damage your business going forward, it will also affect how your students see you and what you have to bring to the market.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Now, yes, it can of course be detempting to go in low, but it would be a huge mistake.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: The truth is that there will always be online courses that are cheaper than yours.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: So you'll never win this race.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: You will simply end up just attracting customers who are just looking for a cheap option and not the value.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: And actually, what you want to be attracting are students that are looking for the value, they're looking for the thing that you have to offer and they're prepared to pay the price that you're wanting them to pay.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Now, having said that, there may be times when charging a low price does work, but this does need to be part of your marketing strategy.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't advise charging a low price just because you're launching something and you have no plan in place.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Only charge a low price if there is intention and thought around it.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Now, you only really want to be reducing your price during a launch or to generate interest, or if you're running a beta testing program or something, you don't want to be setting low prices as your main price point.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: So, for example, perhaps you're introducing your online course to your audience for the very first time, and maybe you want to present a discount offer for a set period of time to generate interest.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Now, this makes absolute sense because you're trying to build buzz around your product.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: So you can set your online course at a lower price in order to get that attention.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: There would be intention behind it, you would have a strategy behind it.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: So it may be that you set your course for a low price for a period of time and then you notify your audience and then you nurture them to buy at that price.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: The reason you would be doing this is to not only get new students through the door, but you're also putting your product out there for the first time.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: However, the caveat on this would be that you would be marketing it at a low price, so it would be an introductory price with a view that after a given period that price would increase, and you would make that known to your audience so that they would know that you would only be charging this price for a period of time before increasing it to the normal price, so you would be setting the perimeters around that and letting your audience know so they know that you're not going to be charging this price for your course long term.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: However, once your online course has been validated and you have gone through that period of introducing it to your audience, then you would be charging a full price because you want your price to be based on value and not on the fact that it's just a cheap course.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, so how do you choose your price?
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: How do you set your price for your online course?
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm gonna give you three tips that will make this just a little bit easier for you.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: So I want you to take these into account when you're choosing your price.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Now, my first tip is all about understanding your students and the challenges they're currently experiencing.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Now, as course creators, we have one job, and that job is to provide a solution to our students.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: So it's about creating something that's going to enhance your students' lives in some way.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Now, this doesn't have to be a massive transformation, it doesn't have to change their life and be mind-blowing, but it does need to provide them with something that's going to help solve a problem.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Now, the more you know about your students and what they are struggling with, the better and more effective your course is going to be.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Because then what you're creating in your course can directly support them and answer the questions or the challenges that they're currently facing.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: So by knowing what they're struggling with, you can create a product that is so laser-focused to providing your students with a solution that it gives them what they need in a really effective way.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Spending time and researching your ideal student will never be a waste of time.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: And I cannot stress that enough because the more you know about your ideal student, the deeper your understanding will be about them, and the more you understand about your student, the more you can then understand what they're currently facing.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Now, you don't want to be creating something that's going to be responding to a challenge in the future.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: You equally don't want to be creating something that's responding to a struggle that they've had in the past.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: You want to be meeting your students where they're currently at.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: So knowing what their current struggles are and where they are in their journey, it will help you to create something so powerful, they're going to have desire in buy-in because your course is going to be helping them to solve the problems or challenges that they're currently facing.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Now, providing quality content that delivers results will be what will enable you to charge a premium price.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: The more you know about your idle student, the more you will understand.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: And when you have that deep understanding about what they need, you can then create something that responds directly to this.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: So never make assumptions about your idle student.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Always do your research.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Invest time in really getting to know them.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Because, as I said, the more you get to know them, the more you understand where they currently are and the struggles that they are currently facing, then your course can be the thing that provides that solution for them.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: And then when you market your course and you talk about your course, it's from the place of providing that result and that transformation, which your students are looking for.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: So then it's about creating the right marketing content that then communicates exactly what your course is about.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Your students aren't going to be buying your course because they're looking for a course, they're going to be buying it because it's going to make their life better.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: So figure out with your course how is this going to make my students' life better?
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: And then use that to determine the content and the results that your course then generates.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, so my second tip is about the transformation and about getting really clear on what this looks like.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Now, this really does feed on from the first tip.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: So in my first tip, obviously, I'm talking about really getting to know your ideal student, understanding their challenges, and then creating your course around that.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: But in this tip, it's about getting laser focused on the transformation that your course will be providing.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: So that is about looking at the result.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Your students are not buying your course for the sake of a course.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: I said this a moment ago.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: They're buying it because they're looking for something specific, they are looking to make their lives better in some way.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: So it might be that they want to learn a new skill or they want to learn how to do something specific, or they may want to enhance their career or move themselves forward in their business.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Whatever it is, there is going to be intention behind the act of them buying your course.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: And the more you can solidify the transformation and get really clear about what that's going to mean for your student, the easier it will be in selling your course.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Now, when it comes to a transformation, it isn't just about the result.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: For example, okay, buy my course, you learn how to create an online course.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: It's never just about that.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Think about the ripple effect that comes from that result.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: So, for example, you buy my course, you learn how to do a course.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: What's that going to give you?
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Well, it's going to give you freedom, it's going to give you time back, it's going to make your life easier, it's going to bring more money into your business, it's going to help you create an impact in the world.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, how's that going to make you feel?
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: It's going to make you feel in control, it's going to give you confidence, it's going to give you freedom, which is going to help you to feel less pressured, it's going to remove stress from you because you know where you are, what you're doing, and what your goals are.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: So really think about the ripple effect that your transformation provides.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Now, people are willing to pay more money for courses that offers something specific.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: So you can then be really clear on what that looks like so that you can charge that more premium price.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Will your course help your students to earn a higher income in their jobs?
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Or will it give them personal fulfillment in their life?
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Will it improve the quality of their life?
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: And if so, what will this lead to?
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: So, really think about what your course is going to be helping your students with and the transformation that it will be providing, and then integrate this into your marketing messaging so that it becomes really clear and that you're communicating your message in a very clear, succinct way to your students.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Now, the clearer you can be about the transformation that your course is providing, as I said, not only will it be easier to sell, but it also means that you can charge more for your course because of the difference that it will make to your students' life.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: So always lead with the transformation or the results and not the fact that you're just providing a course.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Your course is the mechanism in which you're delivering your teaching, it's your teaching and the results that your students are going to be getting that is what matters, and that's what your students are going to be prepared to pay for.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, so my third and final tip is about getting clear on your financial goals and what money that you need to make in your business.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: So consider how much time your online course has taken to create.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Think about what you charge for your hourly rate, and then work out how much time you've actually spent on your course.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: So how much time have you spent planning your course, creating your course, building your course, and even marketing your course.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Now calculate this time and then use your hourly rate to understand what it's cost you.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: So, for example, if you've spent 30 hours creating your online course and your hourly rate is£30, then you know you have spent the equivalent of£900 creating your online course.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: When you are setting your financial goals, you need to be taking this into account because that's an expense that you have spent in order to create this offer.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: So you need to be making this money back in your financial goals.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: So when you're making your sales, you need to be taking this into account.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: Your£900 investment before you've even sold anything.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: So your main goal when you start out is about recouping that money because you spend that money in your time, and your time is so valuable.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: So if you are pricing your course at, for example,£197, then you know that you need to sell at least five to make your money back for the time that you've spent on your course.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: So I would really encourage you to really think about this, write it down, get really clear on what you've spent today so that you can integrate this into your financial goals.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Also consider your expenses.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: If you are investing in a learning management system, a platform, what is the monthly charge on that?
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: And take that into account as well.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: So it might be that you want to calculate that on a yearly basis, and also if you've had a VA helping you, or you've paid for some design work, or you've paid for somebody to build your course, these are all expenses and they need to be taken into account.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not going to say that the first time you launch your online course, you're going to make all of this money back because it may take a while, but where you want to be is knowing your figures to the point that you know that you only need to sell X amount of units of your course and you start making profit because that profit is going to be what you can then use to invest back into your marketing.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Now, I know it can feel really uncomfortable about charging a certain price at the beginning because maybe you feel like your course is improved, you haven't got enough testimonials, and it's new to the market.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: But think about reversing your efforts in terms of your pricing strategy, just reframe how you see it.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: So rather than stressing over a specific price point, consider how you can teach your topic and your course so that it's so valuable that it justifies charging what you want to charge it.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: So, for example, what I mean by that is if you want to sell your online course for£197, think about what needs to go in that course to justify selling it at that price point.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: Because when you then go to sell it, you know that you've put so much value into that course that it's worth what you're charging.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Now I know it's not always comfortable to get into the nitty gritty of the finances, and if you Like me, I don't personally enjoy it.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: I'm not an accountant, I consider myself more of a creative, so finances aren't really my jam.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: However, as entrepreneurs, as business owners, it is super necessary to get this nailed.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: We need to know what our expenses are and how much we need to make in order to keep the lights on in our business and to give us what we want in terms of lifestyle in that.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: So we need to know our numbers because this is going to be what we're going to be governed by essentially.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Because by knowing this, you'll be able to make more conscious decisions about what you charge for for your online course.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Now, the thing about setting goals, especially financial goals, is they do help to keep us focused and they help us to know if we're on track or not.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: So they are really useful.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Don't underestimate the power of setting yourself financial goals ahead of time.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: So it might be something that you think at the beginning that it's not worth doing because your course hasn't yet been created.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: But when you're setting the price for your online course, instead of just choosing an arbitrary number, set your financial goals and look at where you want to be in the future and what you want to make and use that to determine your price.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: It will also be the thing that motivates you to sell your course.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Now, what I advise my clients to do when they're thinking about their goals and they're setting their financial goals in particular, I ask them to set themselves three specific financial goals ahead of time.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: A good goal, a wow goal, and an oh my god, this is an amazing goal.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: It doesn't really matter where they end up, the goal itself doesn't really matter.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: You can end up making more than you've set just by really focusing in on selling your online course.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: The point of it is to give them focus.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: So instead of just throwing spaghetti at wool and having an online course but not really knowing what to do with it or what price to charge, just by putting some financial goals in place, it makes the job so much easier because you then start to get focused on making money around it.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I've got a bonus tip.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: Now, my bonus tip when you're pricing your online course is to consider how much time you are going to be saving your student by them taking your course.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: So also think from their perspective how much time you're saving them just by having everything they need in one place.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: Because we live in a world where content is everywhere and we have all this information at our fingertips, but it takes time to go and get it.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: So it takes time to tour the internet, to find the content we need, to find what we need, to learn the thing that we want to learn.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: And then when we found it, there's no guarantee that it's of any quality.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: So how much time are you saving your students, not just in providing them the training all in one place, but also giving them the quality training that's going to deliver the result?
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Now, I would say a lot, and if you're saving people time, time is precious, it's worth something.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: So we can always make more money.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: Money is this infinite sort of resource that is there.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: We can make it, you can make it, but what you cannot get back is time.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Time is so incredibly valuable, and if you're saving your students time and giving them quality training that generates results in a convenient way to help them move forward in their life, then really consider this when you're choosing your pricing because it will be really valuable to your students, and that needs to be paid for.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: So when you're looking to set the price for your course, don't be afraid to look at it in that way as well.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: You're going to be saving your students time, you're going to be saving your students energy, and you're going to be providing high-quality, valuable content that's going to move them forward in their life in some way.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: So don't be afraid to charge for that.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: If you're still unclear about what to charge for your online course, then consider playing around with various price points.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Don't be afraid to create different offers with different prices because you can then test out and see what works.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Testing out your offer will give you a really valuable insight into what your students feel about your topic, the value of your content, and what they are prepared to pay for what you have to offer.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: If you do decide to do this, then the best strategy is of course to start low and then to gradually increase your price until you feel as though you've reached a price that is right for your course.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: You might actually be surprised at what people will pay to get access to your teaching.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: So by taking this approach, you can then start to play around and see what works and what doesn't.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Now, unfortunately, there is not one price fits all for online courses.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: I wish there were.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: It would make our lives so much easier.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: However, because there isn't, and because there are so many factors at play, give yourself permission to test out different price offers.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: You'll soon find your sweet spot that's going to work for you and your course.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Don't be afraid to make mistakes or have no sales because you can learn lessons from this.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: If you price your course too high and you don't get the sales because of it, then you've learned something.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: So shift your mindset and just see it from that place because everything you learn gives you insight that you can then use to make different choices, and those different choices could actually lead you to the success that you're looking for.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Part of being an entrepreneur is the ability to play around and to test things out, and often it's how we stumble across our really great ideas.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Not everything has to be perfect and figured out.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: So this specifically applies to pricing.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: The best things often come from being messy and opening up to the fact that we don't have all the answers, however, we are prepared to take the steps necessary to figure out what those answers are.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: So take this approach when it comes to your pricing.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: Set your price at a price that you're comfortable, not too low, but a price that you feel is fair for what you're offering, and then play around with it and test from there.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: Now, one of the great things about creating an online course is that it's your baby, you are in control, and that includes what you charge for it as well.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: And these things can be changed at any time.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: You're setting your price initially, but you may change that as you move along, as you get more students on board, as you start to prove that your course is valuable.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: You may decide to increase your prices at a later date, and this is perfectly fine.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: Don't be swayed by competition, don't charge your course based on what other people have charged their courses at.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: Never go cheap.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: Be proud of what you've created, the difference it's going to make to your students, and price your course based on the value that you're offering because you cannot go wrong.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: And remember, this can be changed at any time.
