Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Former England captain s David Beckham has been knighted by
- 0:02Speaker 1: the King at When's the Castle football start, honored for
- 0:06Speaker 1: his services to sport and charity. He's fifty years old,
- 0:09Speaker 1: now named on King Charles's Birthday honors list. Earlier this year,
- 0:13Speaker 1: knighted Edwin's A Council. As I mentioned, and then he
- 0:16Speaker 1: spoke to reporters.
- 0:18Speaker 2: You had a good chat in there, we did, we did,
- 0:20Speaker 2: so can you tell us what you were talking about?
- 0:22Speaker 3: Well, actually he was admiring my suit and I actually
- 0:26Speaker 3: said he was the inspiration. Funnily enough, I looked at
- 0:30Speaker 3: old pictures of him in his younger years and because
- 0:35Speaker 3: I know how elegant he dresses, and I just thought
- 0:38Speaker 3: it was quite important for me to get it right.
- 0:41Speaker 3: And my wife made the suit, so I was very lucky.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Many many congratulations. I have to ask what the fourteen
- 0:48Speaker 1: year olds.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Are the man you would make up all the Oh
- 0:51Speaker 3: my goodness, I've held it together up until now, so
- 0:55Speaker 3: that question is quite a difficult one. But I think
- 0:58Speaker 3: that you know, being an East London boy, you know,
- 1:02Speaker 3: growing up in Leytonstone, moving to Manchester and now stood
- 1:06Speaker 3: here at Windsor Castle with his Majesty the King giving
- 1:11Speaker 3: me a knighthood is something that I could never have
- 1:15Speaker 3: imagined happening to me. You know, my dream as a
- 1:19Speaker 3: young boy was always to become a professional footballer, played
- 1:22Speaker 3: for Manchester United and represent my country, and luckily enough
- 1:26Speaker 3: I got to do that. But you know, everything else
- 1:29Speaker 3: that has come with, you know, my career and what
- 1:32Speaker 3: I've done, and obviously the philanthropic work that I do.
- 1:36Speaker 3: You know, I think that that's what's special about today.
- 1:38Speaker 3: It's not just because of my sport. It's because of
- 1:40Speaker 3: the film tropic work that I've done from a very
- 1:44Speaker 3: early age. I think I was talking about it last
- 1:46Speaker 3: night with my parents that I think I started, you know,
- 1:48Speaker 3: charity work when I was fifteen sixteen at Manchester United,
- 1:51Speaker 3: and then obviously went on to you know, become unis
- 1:54Speaker 3: F Ambassador and working for the Royal Foundation and you know,
- 1:59Speaker 3: the King's Founder and Malaria No More and the Armed Forces.
- 2:03Speaker 3: So you know, I've been very lucky to work for
- 2:05Speaker 3: very important charities around the world. And you know, I
- 2:09Speaker 3: think one of the things that I recognized when I
- 2:11Speaker 3: was very young is, you know, because I had a
- 2:14Speaker 3: successful career, I was able to implement change with the
- 2:18Speaker 3: things that I said and the things that I got
- 2:20Speaker 3: involved in, and I think that's why the charity work
- 2:23Speaker 3: that I do is so important to me. But you know,
- 2:26Speaker 3: the fourteen year old boy from East London standing here
- 2:29Speaker 3: in the castle was with His Majesty the King. It's
- 2:32Speaker 3: a very proud moment for me and my family.
- 2:35Speaker 2: You grew up in a family that adored the Royal family,
- 2:38Speaker 2: so how special for you to have your parents here
- 2:41Speaker 2: as well today.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I think that obviously. You know, when I was last
- 2:45Speaker 3: on for my OBE, I bought my grandparents and that
- 2:48Speaker 3: was very special because the Royal family I have paid.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I have played a huge role in our family over
- 2:54Speaker 3: the years, and we know how important our Royal Family
- 2:57Speaker 3: is and you know it's the most important institution in
- 3:00Speaker 3: the world and the most respected institution in the world.
- 3:03Speaker 3: So to be stood here today being honored as an
- 3:06Speaker 3: East End boy, you know, and to have done what
- 3:10Speaker 3: I've done and be able to work, you know, with
- 3:12Speaker 3: the charities that I've worked with and played with, the
- 3:15Speaker 3: teams that I've played with, and the players that I've
- 3:17Speaker 3: played with, and the managers that I've played under. And
- 3:20Speaker 3: I also want to I want to thank the British
- 3:22Speaker 3: people as well, because you know, with their support over
- 3:25Speaker 3: the years, it's been it's one of the reasons why
- 3:28Speaker 3: I'm here today, so it's a big moment.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Well, that interview with the David was done by Osball
- 3:34Speaker 1: correspondent Natalie Perks, who joins us now from outside Windsor Castle.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Natalie Sir David seemed so moved, so touched by the
- 3:43Speaker 1: experience today. What else did he say to you? How
- 3:46Speaker 1: was it?
- 3:49Speaker 2: Well, I think he was hugely emotional. You can hear
- 3:51Speaker 2: it really and what he was saying. He was there
- 3:53Speaker 2: with his dad Ted and his mum Sandra, as well
- 3:55Speaker 2: as Lady Beckham and his dad Ted was a huge
- 3:58Speaker 2: part of his career. He used to take him up
- 4:02Speaker 2: and down to Manchester United all the time to training,
- 4:05Speaker 2: practicing free kicks with him. He's always spoke about his
- 4:07Speaker 2: dad being such a massive part of his life and
- 4:09Speaker 2: I was able to briefly chat to his dad as well.
- 4:11Speaker 2: He was just so proud, just absolutely beaming watching him.
- 4:15Speaker 2: So it was a real family affair today and I
- 4:18Speaker 2: think you know, obviously he was knighted for his work
- 4:22Speaker 2: in football. He is a global football icon, but it's
- 4:24Speaker 2: his work with charity that he's done, particularly over the
- 4:26Speaker 2: last twenty years, that has really earned him this honor.
- 4:29Speaker 2: He's been working with UNICEF particularly for around twenty years.
- 4:32Speaker 2: He's now an ambassador for the King's Foundation. The pair
- 4:35Speaker 2: had a really lovely chat today. You could see they
- 4:38Speaker 2: really enjoyed each other's company. We know they've been swapping
- 4:41Speaker 2: bee keeping tips because Sir David has an estate in
- 4:44Speaker 2: the Cotswolds where he makes his own honey from his
- 4:46Speaker 2: bees and they have a mutual love of the countryside.
- 4:48Speaker 2: So that's something that has bonded the pair of them.
- 4:51Speaker 2: But it's most certainly his football work that's made him
- 4:54Speaker 2: what he is in terms of culturally, but it's his
- 4:57Speaker 2: work with charities that has elevated him this status today
- 5:01Speaker 2: that he's clearly so proud of.
- 5:02Speaker 1: And what then is his status within the game now, Natalie.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I mean, he did talk a lot about his charity
- 5:08Speaker 1: work and there has been the focus today. But within
- 5:10Speaker 1: the world of football, where does he stand at the moment?
- 5:15Speaker 2: Well, of course he's played for some absolutely huge iconic
- 5:18Speaker 2: teams Manchester United, Real, Madrid, PSG, Paris SN Shaman, where
- 5:21Speaker 2: he ended his career at the age of thirty eight
- 5:23Speaker 2: in twenty thirteen. So we still think of Beckham, Sir
- 5:28Speaker 2: David Beckham, as the person who made that amazing free kick,
- 5:32Speaker 2: not free kick but shot from the halfway line for
- 5:35Speaker 2: Manchester United. We think of him as well as some
- 5:37Speaker 2: iconic moments that the free kick that saved England when
- 5:41Speaker 2: they were playing Greece and all of those things. But
- 5:42Speaker 2: it has been a long time since he retired and
- 5:45Speaker 2: since then he's done a lot of philanthropy, as we've
- 5:48Speaker 2: spoken about, but he's also the co owner of two
- 5:50Speaker 2: football clubs, one of them Into Miami, have a huge
- 5:52Speaker 2: game at the weekend in the MLS playoffs and no
- 5:54Speaker 2: doubt he'll be back there. He's also a fashion icon.
- 5:58Speaker 2: He's got a wife, of course, he's got a fashion business,
- 6:01Speaker 2: so he really has his fingers in lots of pies.
- 6:04Speaker 2: But really today, as he celebrates now with a lunch
- 6:07Speaker 2: with his family and his kids, it will all be
- 6:09Speaker 2: about reflecting on this moment and just what an honor
- 6:11Speaker 2: it is for someone who loves the monarchy so very
- 6:14Speaker 2: very much.
