- 0:00Speaker 1: Have another drink with Jimmy the Wine Guy. Powered by
- 0:02Speaker 1: our friends at Clearwater Distilling. Today we dive into a
- 0:05Speaker 1: new one for Clearwater and featured as their cocktail kit
- 0:08Speaker 1: of the Month. It's Sophie's at Gin Blueberry and Lavender cocktail.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Nice Phil, feel all right, feel down the weather, feel
- 0:24Speaker 2: all right.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Well, here he is, ladies and gentlemen.
- 0:26Speaker 4: He is the Enfant Terrible of the Wine Academy of Utah.
- 0:31Speaker 1: You're a nice guy, Jimmy.
- 0:32Speaker 4: Don't let him Jimmy Santangelo. That's a compliment, Gina, Jimmy Santangelo.
- 0:38Speaker 4: He's here a Wine Academy of Utah dot com.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Good morning. What have we got. We've got the Sophie's Gin.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Here's a little garnish, garnish garnish.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Oh, look at that candy? Candy? Do do I put
- 0:55Speaker 3: this injury?
- 0:56Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 0:56Speaker 3: Put it right in the drink. Yeah, it's Sarah Sophie's Gin.
- 0:59Speaker 5: This is a fun cocktail kit that they have with
- 1:02Speaker 5: the blueberry and lavender mixer.
- 1:04Speaker 3: So I'm holding up this Sophie's Gin. Let me hold
- 1:07Speaker 3: up this our friends of Clearwater.
- 1:09Speaker 5: Yeah, this is there, clear Water, Friends of clear Water,
- 1:11Speaker 5: And this is the kit. You get both, well, you
- 1:13Speaker 5: have to get the gin separately. But the kid comes
- 1:16Speaker 5: with this beautiful blueberry and lavender mixer, some cans of
- 1:21Speaker 5: soda water, and then this beautiful garnish that we have here.
- 1:25Speaker 5: This is our dried lemon. I call it an orange.
- 1:29Speaker 5: It's our dried lemon. And there is lemon crisps.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Are crispy slices beautiful. I love kids. This is so cool.
- 1:37Speaker 3: You just it's everything's in there, and.
- 1:40Speaker 1: What a nice gift for somebody.
- 1:41Speaker 5: Totally, it's a great nice aromatics on this mixer are
- 1:46Speaker 5: beautiful and are supported and emphasized. The Sophie's gin is
- 1:51Speaker 5: a modern style gin, but they have these international traditional
- 1:56Speaker 5: uh foundation of meaning.
- 1:59Speaker 3: It's a London in dry style.
- 2:02Speaker 5: But you then have these beautiful aromatics and botanicals in there,
- 2:06Speaker 5: so it's really quite nice.
- 2:07Speaker 3: A little more flavorful, me, a little bit more flavorful.
- 2:09Speaker 3: That's right. Who Sophie? Do we know who Sophie is?
- 2:13Speaker 3: It's a pet. It's their dog.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, right on the top there, right, isn't that fun?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Oh, Sophie looks like a golden retriever.
- 2:23Speaker 4: I need to get the third most popular name for
- 2:25Speaker 4: Golden Retriever Sophie, followed by one of.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Those I love that. That's great as a beautiful bottle.
- 2:34Speaker 5: Yeah, handsome bottles. They do a great job in their packaging.
- 2:37Speaker 5: The glass toppers are always so nice. You know, you
- 2:41Speaker 5: got this glass topper to it and square shoulders, nice sleek,
- 2:46Speaker 5: will compliment anyone's back by I'm no kidding.
- 2:49Speaker 3: So again what comes in the kit.
- 2:52Speaker 5: So what you have in the kit are three items.
- 2:54Speaker 5: You have the mixer. You have the blueberry lavender mixer,
- 2:58Speaker 5: very aromatic.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Yeah, tell me about this. So this is really great.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Ingredients water, cane, sugar, blueberry, and some variety of app
- 3:07Speaker 5: of concentrates.
- 3:09Speaker 3: But it's all natural.
- 3:10Speaker 5: It's you got the lemon juice in there, lavender of course,
- 3:15Speaker 5: natural blueberry flavoring, blueberry juice, concentrated sugar and water. And
- 3:18Speaker 5: that's not an alcoholic this, that's right, Yes, this is
- 3:21Speaker 5: not alcoholic, this mixer. And you could add to this
- 3:25Speaker 5: mixer a clear Waters vodka that we've had before.
- 3:29Speaker 3: The gin I think really compliments this. Some soda water.
- 3:33Speaker 5: So this cocktails a one to one ratio of however
- 3:37Speaker 5: amount of gin you want to put in.
- 3:39Speaker 3: You match that with the mixer, and how much is
- 3:42Speaker 3: in the bottle of mixer.
- 3:43Speaker 5: How that's how big of a sixteen fluid outs?
- 3:49Speaker 3: You have a thirty two ounce drink right there.
- 3:51Speaker 5: That's it, and then you have your soda water, a
- 3:55Speaker 5: little bit more soda water.
- 3:57Speaker 3: So this is I probably did an ounce per for
- 3:59Speaker 3: you this morning.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Ounce of gin, ounce of the mixer, and then floated
- 4:03Speaker 5: at about two plus ounces of the soda water and
- 4:07Speaker 5: complemented with the garnish shir.
- 4:08Speaker 3: The mixer is in there, the mixer of the soda
- 4:11Speaker 3: water and the garnish.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Somebody's wondering where they can buy the kid.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Yeah, so you can get these right at Clearwater and
- 4:18Speaker 5: Pleasant Grove at their package store attached to the distillery.
- 4:23Speaker 3: So it's right there.
- 4:24Speaker 5: They're open seven days a week, and that's where you
- 4:28Speaker 5: then can also get your alcohol seven days a week.
- 4:31Speaker 5: In their package store. They sell all the product that
- 4:35Speaker 5: they distill that they make.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Right there at the package store. They make a fine
- 4:40Speaker 3: vodka and this gin is really good. Yeah.
- 4:42Speaker 5: They the vodka is a triple distilled. They distill it,
- 4:45Speaker 5: actually filter it. Excuse me, they filter that so it's
- 4:48Speaker 5: really super smooth. The base on this gin is really
- 4:52Speaker 5: nice and broad on the palette, good mouthfield. But then
- 4:56Speaker 5: those botanicals in essence has really come through.
- 4:59Speaker 4: I'm just I'm in pressed. It's very, very tasty. It's
- 5:03Speaker 4: not too sweet.
- 5:05Speaker 5: I love their packaging. Yeah, the mixture is not too sweet.
- 5:08Speaker 5: It's got a nice tartness to it. But the flavors
- 5:12Speaker 5: and characteristics certainly come out.
- 5:14Speaker 3: This is something to sit in the summer sun and
- 5:17Speaker 3: ye ship these and the warm weather coming on. Here
- 5:20Speaker 3: we go. It's your warm weather March drink. Unfortunately it's
- 5:28Speaker 3: before we go to break.
- 5:30Speaker 6: Let's talk briefly about our party that we're having tomorrow.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, it's sold out, folks. I'm sorry, so again.
- 5:40Speaker 1: One Yeah, so we'll do another one. But for tomorrow.
- 5:45Speaker 1: What people that are listening that bought tickets, what can
- 5:47Speaker 1: they expect?
- 5:48Speaker 5: Yeah, come up to ken Garth University Club. That's up
- 5:51Speaker 5: at Recycle Stadium at the University Utah Parkings. All complimentary
- 5:55Speaker 5: right there. You're going to be greeted. Uh so if
- 5:59Speaker 5: you've not been there before, it's awesome. It's built out
- 6:01Speaker 5: on the south side of the stadium along four hundred itself.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Three levels of just awesomeness. You have this field level.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Then the next level is the sweet level where you
- 6:12Speaker 5: can watch the games, and that's where we're gonna be
- 6:14Speaker 5: having a multi course or we're gonna be tasting a
- 6:17Speaker 5: bunch of wines there for us on that level, but
- 6:19Speaker 5: we're gonna greet you at the very top floor in
- 6:21Speaker 5: the restaurant with a sparkling wine arrival, meet and greet,
- 6:25Speaker 5: and then we'll head down to the Sweet level for
- 6:28Speaker 5: the tasting.
- 6:29Speaker 3: It's gonna be good. It's gonna be a really good time. Yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 3: So that's what we What time are we supposed to
- 6:34Speaker 3: be three starts at three? Yeah, and then we are
- 6:39Speaker 3: planning another one. Yeah.
- 6:40Speaker 1: So after let's get past tomorrow's and then I think
- 6:44Speaker 1: on Monday, we're gonna start talking about the next one.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So if you didn't get in on this one, it
- 6:50Speaker 1: sold out pretty fast. We're gonna do it not at
- 6:53Speaker 1: the same place we're doing the next different Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 5: And it's so fun for us to be able to
- 6:57Speaker 5: come together off site. Uh, you guys can participate in
- 7:01Speaker 5: his listeners to hang out and see what I do
- 7:04Speaker 5: with the tastings. You know, we talk about it on
- 7:06Speaker 5: air all the time every Friday, but to be able
- 7:08Speaker 5: to come and hang out and go through a wine
- 7:12Speaker 5: tasting with us, learn about the basics of assessing wine,
- 7:15Speaker 5: looking at it, smelling and put it to the palate.
- 7:17Speaker 5: And at the Kengarf Club tomorrow we're gonna have little
- 7:19Speaker 5: bites of food to pair with it.
- 7:20Speaker 3: So it's how many wines are we gonna four?
- 7:23Speaker 5: We have the sparkling Wine Arrival, and then three a
- 7:28Speaker 5: white and two reds for pairing.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Okay, cool, excellent, All right, well here we are.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Now we're back again with Jimmy Santangelo. He is the
- 7:38Speaker 4: enfantib of the Wine Academy. It is Gina's webs here.
- 7:44Speaker 3: I looked it up. Web Baby, isn't it.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Webster's Dictionary defines enfantribe as an unusually successful person who
- 7:52Speaker 4: was strikingly unorthodox, innovative, and or avant guard.
- 7:58Speaker 3: You're a bad baby, that's what it's I thought it was.
- 8:00Speaker 3: That's the that's the literal translation.
- 8:03Speaker 4: It has come to me someone who was unusually They
- 8:07Speaker 4: called Orson wells an.
- 8:10Speaker 3: But he was a baby.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Don't wore its time, Jimmy.
- 8:19Speaker 3: It's a compliment. Jimmy, big diaper, it's a compliment.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Let's see, we got lots of questions for you.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Shoot, let's start with Andrew. Hello Andrew, Hey.
- 8:30Speaker 7: There guys, a longtime listener, first time color Jimmy. My
- 8:34Speaker 7: question for you is this, I always hear this. I
- 8:37Speaker 7: don't know if it's an urban legend or not.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Maybe you could shine a little light on it.
- 8:41Speaker 7: Different liquors spirits interact with people differently, Like tequila is
- 8:45Speaker 7: always you know, people go a little wild. Whiskey might
- 8:48Speaker 7: make you mean, et cetera. Is there any truth to
- 8:51Speaker 7: that or do people.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Just kind of like to carry claims there is carry
- 8:55Speaker 3: claims there's free Andrew.
- 8:56Speaker 7: I used to totally I would say there is too.
- 8:59Speaker 6: But yeah, Andrew, I used to not believe that, but
- 9:04Speaker 6: then I then I discovered that Apparently I get mean
- 9:07Speaker 6: when I have dark rum, which is why we call
- 9:10Speaker 6: it sailor Carrie.
- 9:13Speaker 3: He's not he's not allowed in the house.
- 9:16Speaker 4: I seem to get I seem to get drunker faster
- 9:20Speaker 4: and have a hangover drinking gin.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I can.
- 9:24Speaker 4: I can drink a lot of whiskey, a lot of bourbon,
- 9:27Speaker 4: but if I drink the same amount of gin, I
- 9:29Speaker 4: get kind of the.
- 9:31Speaker 5: The foundation of that is the amount of sugar or
- 9:35Speaker 5: straw that you have in the different alcoholics.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Yeah, but uh, sailor carry, I'm not going to be
- 9:41Speaker 3: able to get over there. He's he's allowed in the house.
- 9:45Speaker 3: I've never met him, and I I used to not
- 9:49Speaker 3: believe it.
- 9:49Speaker 6: I I there was a comic book I loved called
- 9:51Speaker 6: Milk and Cheese, which is, you know, a carton and
- 9:54Speaker 6: milk and a chunk of cheese, and they would have adventures.
- 9:56Speaker 6: And one of the frames that I just loved was
- 9:59Speaker 6: gin makes a Man mean. You know, one of them
- 10:02Speaker 6: yelling Gine makes a man mean. And I always thought
- 10:04Speaker 6: that's funny because it's all alcohol. It's okay, yeah, it's different,
- 10:09Speaker 6: but you say it's the sugar.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Yeah, So RUMs we see that a lot of the
- 10:13Speaker 3: dark spirits to bring out the dark spirit of the person. Grasps.
- 10:19Speaker 3: How about you, Andrew, Well.
- 10:23Speaker 7: I don't drink anymore because kind of like carry the
- 10:26Speaker 7: dark liquors. They they made me a little bit of
- 10:30Speaker 7: a different person.
- 10:31Speaker 3: So there you good, very exactly, well, good question, Thanks
- 10:34Speaker 3: for thanks, thank you. Here's a text where is a
- 10:38Speaker 3: good bar to have a good wine for a good date?
- 10:42Speaker 3: With Alison Sabo? What a good bar for good wine
- 10:46Speaker 3: and a wine date?
- 10:47Speaker 1: Where would you go for a wine date?
- 10:48Speaker 5: Man, there's a lot in town, brand new place over
- 10:53Speaker 5: Brownstone twenty two. Oh yeah, that's part of the felt
- 10:56Speaker 5: I was just looking at it. Yeah, yeah, that's a
- 10:58Speaker 5: great beverage program there by. The glass BTG also is fantastic.
- 11:04Speaker 5: That's below Cafe Molisee. What is that over here on
- 11:07Speaker 5: West Temple in four or fifth south or so. That's
- 11:11Speaker 5: that's solid there. Evans Scotti, Evans Cassat at fifteenth and fifteenth.
- 11:19Speaker 5: So a lot of these are oriented down in this area,
- 11:22Speaker 5: but those are my top three that come to mind.
- 11:25Speaker 6: All right, let's see a question for Jimmy. We live
- 11:28Speaker 6: in Utah County. We're wondering if you know of anywhere
- 11:31Speaker 6: to get gluten free beer.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Wow, your Harman's has a selection, so you know your
- 11:38Speaker 5: local grocer kind of the thing that would be my
- 11:43Speaker 5: first go after it. Also some of the what the
- 11:48Speaker 5: heck was it? It was non alcoholic beverage. I know
- 11:52Speaker 5: you're asking for alcohol, but there is a non alcoholic
- 11:54Speaker 5: beverage beer base that was a gluten free product. I'm
- 11:57Speaker 5: trying to think of it maybe before the end come up.
- 12:00Speaker 5: But there's a lot of great products out there. That
- 12:02Speaker 5: are gluten free.
- 12:03Speaker 6: All right, let's see, Oh, people wanting to know where
- 12:06Speaker 6: to buy this blueberry kit, this blueberry leavender kit.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Yeah, right at Clearwater Distilling in Pleasant Grove. In fact,
- 12:12Speaker 5: I'll either this Sunday for an event, our cigar and
- 12:15Speaker 5: spirits event. We're featuring the Sophie's Gin followed by their
- 12:20Speaker 5: rymgnak and we're preparing cocktails therefore as Actually we're going
- 12:25Speaker 5: to use the Renee which is their rum like based product,
- 12:31Speaker 5: and I making a fun cocktail with that this Sunday
- 12:33Speaker 5: the excellent.
- 12:35Speaker 6: Let's see Jimmy help going to a housewarming party for
- 12:38Speaker 6: a wine loving couple.
- 12:40Speaker 3: What's a nice bottle? I could give them? Hashtag wine
- 12:43Speaker 3: know nothing?
- 12:44Speaker 5: Right, So when you do that, you want to be
- 12:48Speaker 5: a little name droppy, right, you want to be name droppy.
- 12:51Speaker 5: So Camus Cabernet Sevion. Yeah, that's a good one about
- 12:55Speaker 5: eighty bucks. But they've got baby Game with a C
- 12:59Speaker 5: A M U S and they've got baby Camis that
- 13:04Speaker 5: says California across the label and that's in the forties.
- 13:08Speaker 3: And that's a fantastic bottle.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Ready to drink or you could lay it down for
- 13:13Speaker 5: you know, one to three years, that kind of thing,
- 13:15Speaker 5: it'll improve for you.
- 13:16Speaker 3: The baby camis the big Camus. It'll say Napa Valley.
- 13:20Speaker 3: So that's the two difference.
- 13:21Speaker 5: They have the same name Camus, but ones from California
- 13:25Speaker 5: sourcing all that fruit throughout the state, and the others
- 13:27Speaker 5: from Napa Valley.
- 13:28Speaker 6: All right, let's see Tasha from North Ogden. Jimmy, I'm
- 13:32Speaker 6: going to Purple Sky this weekend.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I don't know what that is. New winery? Which one
- 13:39Speaker 3: would you recommend from?
- 13:41Speaker 5: You know, they have a caberty fronc. If I call correctly,
- 13:45Speaker 5: that's pretty bomber. But they'll walk you through, do a taste,
- 13:48Speaker 5: do like a flight though. I'm sure they'll have flights
- 13:50Speaker 5: on all their wines.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Let's see, are delicious. Yeah, it was my birthday a
- 13:57Speaker 3: couple of weeks ago.
- 13:58Speaker 6: I really wanted to go to In and Out Burger
- 13:59Speaker 6: because I'd never sat in the restaurant before. Unfortunately, my
- 14:03Speaker 6: daughter's dragged me somewhere else. But I'd like to go
- 14:06Speaker 6: and sit at the In and Out for lunch. What
- 14:08Speaker 6: would be a good wine to peer? So tell Mary
- 14:12Speaker 6: Claire what what wine with an.
- 14:14Speaker 3: In and Out Burger? Animal style? That's your that's your mind.
- 14:18Speaker 5: So you got a lot of a lot of flavor
- 14:20Speaker 5: going on there, a lot of baiting here, and you
- 14:22Speaker 5: need something big, rich and tannic to cleanse the palette,
- 14:25Speaker 5: to go against all that.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Beautiful salty, fatty deliciousness.
- 14:28Speaker 5: Right, so uh, nice big blend blended red or perhaps
- 14:34Speaker 5: the wine we just spoke of, Cabernet sevon from Kamans.
- 14:38Speaker 4: I would suggest Mary Claire that you get a boat
- 14:40Speaker 4: bag and sling it over your shoulder and.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Then go into the Sideways the movie Sideways. You put
- 14:46Speaker 3: it in the and he was taking. Go into the
- 14:49Speaker 3: into the in and out and have.
- 14:50Speaker 6: Your boat bag with here's a question, how would I
- 14:53Speaker 6: go about getting some Yengling beer from Pennsylvania?
- 14:56Speaker 3: Here? Did they? Yeah? And that's a special order. So
- 15:03Speaker 3: go to your liquor store. Yeah, go to the sort.
- 15:05Speaker 5: In fact, they may even have it pre ordered into
- 15:09Speaker 5: the state, meaning it'll have a skew number already an
- 15:11Speaker 5: item number, making that special order easier.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Just keep the mind you have to buy a minimum
- 15:15Speaker 3: of a case.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Typically with beers like that that kind of a thing,
- 15:18Speaker 5: I'd recommend buying two to three cases.
- 15:20Speaker 3: This way, you have it on him what is it.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I don't know what it is.
- 15:23Speaker 3: I recall it's just beer. It's just a beer.
- 15:26Speaker 5: It's just beer, Logger I firecock correctly, a little thinner,
- 15:29Speaker 5: a little lighter.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not an I p A or anything. It's
- 15:33Speaker 3: you know. On the other it's a.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Really old label and it's nothing special. As I recall,
- 15:38Speaker 4: I'd drank a bunch of us.
- 15:40Speaker 5: Yeah, it runs through the streets in PA for sure.
- 15:43Speaker 5: When I lived in Southern Jersey, that was a real
- 15:45Speaker 5: popular beer.
- 15:45Speaker 3: I remember seeing the logo somewhere. Yeah. Yeah, do they
- 15:48Speaker 3: still make Iron City I don't know.
- 15:51Speaker 4: From Pour on the Iron from Pittsburgh, Iron City, Pour
- 15:55Speaker 4: on the Iron.
- 15:56Speaker 5: Well, now you're getting in my neighborhood Neary County, where
- 15:59Speaker 5: we had Genesee Molson was a staple of bats.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Those are all the beers that are in that area.
- 16:06Speaker 4: And then every every year, the I think it was
- 16:08Speaker 4: the Iron City Brewery would do old frothing Schloss, the pale,
- 16:13Speaker 4: stale ale with the foam on the bottom.
- 16:18Speaker 6: The last time I went bowling with my dad, he said,
- 16:21Speaker 6: I think I'll have a beer, And he said, why
- 16:23Speaker 6: don't you give me a bud light? Would you carry
- 16:25Speaker 6: and I said, oh Dad, we can get you a
- 16:26Speaker 6: better beer than a bud Light. Got him some cutthroat
- 16:29Speaker 6: and he just went, yeah, yeah, he.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Just bought bud Light. It's one of the bud Lights bears.
- 16:35Speaker 5: I've certainly gotten serious over the years, and so it's
- 16:38Speaker 5: fun to talk about some of those old ones.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Anyway. What You've got a lot of events, Yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 5: This Sunday, clear Water, next week where at New One
- 16:48Speaker 5: up at Roosters in Ogden. We're doing our Whiskey and
- 16:51Speaker 5: History experience each month featuring different local Utah spirits. A
- 16:56Speaker 5: lot at Lifelong Learning, I'm doing a Scotch and Irish
- 17:00Speaker 5: skis as well as a tequila miscal tast team towards
- 17:02Speaker 5: the end of the month. And Park City Wine Festivals
- 17:06Speaker 5: coming up in April April eleventh. Get your tickets. They
- 17:09Speaker 5: can be kind of spending, but it's pretty awesome. So
- 17:11Speaker 5: when you do buy your ticket, use the discount code
- 17:15Speaker 5: Jimmy j J I M M Y for a fifteen
- 17:18Speaker 5: percent discount.
- 17:19Speaker 3: There you go nice? Yeah, all right.
