- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Good, good, yourself?
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, good, thanks.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Uh I I rewatched this movie last night, but um I'd seen it before as well.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: I'd seen it when it came out and then not again since then.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Oh really?
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: I I saw it I saw it when it came out and um countless times since and watched it again at the weekend to with with my notebook.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Um I think my flatmate spot I was a bit weird, but but I've got all the all the key plot points in this incredible movie.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: So wait, when it first came out, I was uh 17.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So I was like the same age as the characters are supposed to be.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: Supposed to be, even though they're like 35.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're clearly like way older, most of them.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Except for like apparently um I think Penn Badgley was a approximately the right age, because he he did this just before Gossip Girl, right?
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Oh right, yeah.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: It's so weird seeing him with like long hair as well.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: They tried they tried their best to like make him look like the like dorky younger brother, but like all they did was just like long hair on a really attractive guy, and you're like, oh okay, cool.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: You're the nerdy one.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: That's the thing.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: I think he is significantly younger though.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Like, I I I um I did my research, I I googled ages and heights and stuff.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: I think the height was I I feel quite important because I one of the things that I'm absolutely sick of in um teen films is like they're all they always have like like high school musical, this one they always have like a star basketball player, and they're almost like five foot seven and like captain of the basketball team, and it's just it is ridiculous that he is on the like the captain of the basketball team in this movie.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Like how tall is he then?
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: So he's five nine.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, that is ridiculous.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's there's no basketballer, even in like they take like high school sport in America very seriously.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Like no, no one is captaining a basketball team at five foot nine.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: I'm like five eight, and there's like no chance, like close to like getting on the team, let alone a captain.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: I I always think of like Steph Curry as being short, like and he's like what like six foot three or something.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Uh there is that one basketball player though from like the 90s that was like 5'3.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you remember him.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: He was in he's in Space Jam.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: I didn't I didn't know that.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: That's the only reason I know who he is, but he's like 5'3, but he was he was a really good shot, so like that that's the way they kept him on the team.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: But like, can you imagine how good you'd have to be for like being 5'3 and on a t on a basketball team?
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: He wasn't like the Chicago Bulls or something.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Oh shit.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you'd have to be very, very good.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so like so you're saying Jesse Metcalf was like significant significantly older than Ped Jackson.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: And I because uh one of the reasons I Googled it was because I was like that because they were doing like he was the the younger brother, and he it was like I was like that they're the same age, and then I Googled it, and I think that's like ten years between them.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: They're like No way.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Jesse Metcalf just looks really young then, I guess.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, yeah.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: And um but also like old enough that like another thing that I hate about these teen films is like uh sorry, I might be getting ahead of myself if we're gonna go for it chronologically, but like No, no, no, go for it, go for it.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, well the the um the scene where like he's like you know it's like teenagers in their underwear and stuff, and it's like it looks fine because they're actually like 27.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: When you think about it, you're like, oh no, that's not okay.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Like it's not and like it's so gross.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: The scene at the beginning where like a um a teacher faints because of how hot he is.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like that's not okay if you're a child.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Like that's that's fucked up.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: 17-year-old boy winking at a tea uh like a 40-year-old teacher and she faints, and like or the e-grown adult who's like, oh I think the So the the one I did look up was Ariel Kebble, and she was like about the right age for this.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Wait, was she the She's Carrie?
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: She's the uh I've watched this so many times and I don't know a single name.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: She's she's the like the reporter one.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: The like classic overachiever.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, the overachiever one.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And then Brittany spoke Britney Snow was like 20, so she was like just a little bit older.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Fairly close though.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: But then the rest of them were like Ashanti, Sophia Bush, Jesse McCaffrey, they were all definitely like much older.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that they this film was also like just one of one of the lines that I really like in it was when they started to do the um uh like the the the part where they start to like film him and stuff, yeah.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Um, and they say, Oh, he's just gonna end up with like a role on the OC from this.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: I swear they picked that because it's the only show that's not represented in this.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Like they've got like someone from every other teen drama.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I didn't even think about that.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Because they couldn't go with Desperate Housewives, they couldn't go with uh No Gossip Girls, but no One Tree Hill.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Um That's so true.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: And probably like, but also wasn't the OC the biggest one at the time.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it probably was.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: From what I remember, I was watching I remember watching the OC at the time, but I didn't I didn't watch any of the other ones.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: No.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: But I definitely I was definitely uh aware of like the rest of them.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: I knew who I knew who they all were.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: I I I was I was very big into the OC and then I was very big into Gossip Girl, and that is part of that is part of why I love this, because like I love that Penn Badgley just plays the same guy.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Does he?
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Like through his entire career, he's basically just played like the sensitive brooding one.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: And then like have you seen you, the the the TV show?
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: I know I I know what it yeah, I'm aware of like who he plays in there though.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: He but he it's it's literally the same character he's been playing in his entire career, but it's like just looked at through a different lens, like because it's like it it's his character doing all of the like rom-com tropes that like that are completely unacceptable and like he's but like he's the exact same guy throughout his entire and I just like that it's every film, it's just we're looking at it in a slightly different way, and it's like no, he's the same guy though.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: But we see it as romantic in this one.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Is so is he good in you?
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: I I I think so, yeah.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: I re I really like it.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: It's um I like a lot of things that people think are trash.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, is it considered trash?
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: I think so, but I uh I read the book first and the book is really good.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: I didn't know it was a book.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it was.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Um the it's like I think the second series of it like deviates a lot from the second book, but the first book is like very, very good.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Um and it's like because it's t told from like first person perspective, and so it's like the reason it's called you is like he's talking to her the whole way through.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Like is that even first person?
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: No, that's it's addressed to her that entire time.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know what you know what you mean.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: I can't think of what the the correct one is.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I don't it you know what I mean, anyway.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Uh oh, interesting.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: But I might have to watch it.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: It seems it sound it does sound like something I would probably end up liking, I feel like.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think as a film connoisseur, like the fact that it like it it intentionally takes tropes from yeah rom coms and makes and remembers.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that sounds interesting.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Um but so is the book so you're saying the book's better then uh than the show?
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: I think the show's really good.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: I think the first book is I I think the first season of you is really good because I think what I like about it is it there's nothing in it that like besides the murdering there's nothing in it that doesn't happen in normal rom coms and he does all the same things that like most people do, but he just takes it a bit to felt like he does like the that like looks her up on Instagram, but it's like too like it's an unacceptable level, but it's like all it's like exploring that, but then the second I think the second book is quite good, but then the second series makes it a lot more dramatic and he's just this like like he's still killing people the whole time, and I'm like the second series is just unrealistic because he just does it too much.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: I thought it was like um so from what I what I thought it was was like a Dexter style show.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: I thought it was sort of looked like that.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: I Oh it is I've never seen Dexter.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: Um I've heard comparisons, but I don't I I don't know.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: That's what it looked like to me when I was like I saw some like clips from it or whatever.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh this is Dexter, but yeah, like a teen version.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: It probably is, they're probably like not just taking tropes for everything, they're just probably copying something else, and I just didn't realise.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: But then I also like I watched the whole of Dexter and like hated most of it.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: But it was like sticking with it, so that's why I haven't got round that's why I never got round to watching you.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Because I was like, oh, if I don't like Dexter, I'm not gonna just watch this, but yeah, I might give it a go.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Now you're saying it's the brain of tropes.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: That sounds interesting.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so I realised we haven't even I haven't even named the the movie that we're talking about here.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: But um obviously you've seen his career.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: If you've uh if you've like tuned into the podcast, you obviously know it's John Tucker Must Die, which is um came out in 2006, and it's got 27% on Rotten Tomatoes from the uh critics, and 69% from the audience, though.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: So it's a very big difference.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: It's a nice score.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Um but it's uh basically it's the the plot of it is like he's this womanizing uh guy at school, he's like the most popular guy at school, he's and he's like dating multiple girls at once.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: They all find out, and this new girl at school uh helps take him down by uh working with them to like get him to fall in love with her, and that's like the basic premise of the movie.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Um that's pretty perfect.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: It's I feel like it's just it's literally mean girls, but they're just doing it to a guy.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: That's true, yeah.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: Like it's like talking of like taking it's not even taking tropes from old films, it's just straight up copying them.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Like, it's genuinely like the whole thing of like the um like I I I take I I I hate this part of it because it's I I I spent my childhood moving around loads, and there's there's so many films with like a new girl who's at the school, and it's just like I hate I hate how they do it, and it's always it's always because the mum can't hold down a relationship.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Like that's what happened in um the perfect man film.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: That's that's how this one starts, and then this and then once that happens, so it's got the perfect man star, and then it's like the entire thing is like this new girl who's like pretending to be someone she's not to infiltrate the like popular people, and then she's she becomes one of them, and then she realizes that's not who she is.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: It's like the exact same plot.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: That is green girls, yeah.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: And literally everything they do, it's like you know, and mean girls like they like cut um the the holes in her shirt, and then everyone starts wearing their shirt like that.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Like, um it's the same thing in this film, like he they get him to wear a thong, and then everyone starts wearing a thong.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: It's just like it's the same film.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I love how it's just like a a cookie-cutter version of it.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Well, speaking of the thong scene, um did I read on here, I read on the on the trivia that that wasn't even supposed to happen.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: It was supposed to be that he shaves his they get him to shave his head, and uh the director thought it'd be funnier if he wore a thong.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Also, how were they gonna get him to because that the whole scene is like this whole like wear this for me, it will be sexy.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: What was she gonna do?
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Like shave your head for me, it'll be shaved.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Shave your head for me, it was sexy.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: And then he shows up in the in the bedroom and he's just got a shaved head.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, was it literally gonna be the exact same?
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: It can't have been it.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: That must have been what I've seen added.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Um, I think this was a better version of whatever this would that would have been.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: And also what was that every person gonna shave their head suddenly as well?
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, it's also a 5.8 on IMDB as well, which is like not that bad.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, as a fan of this film, it deserves lower.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: So how many times have you seen it at this point?
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: I honestly don't know.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Like it is Is it a comfort movie that you watch a lot?
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like whenever I'm hungover, whenever I'm sad.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: This is this is one of the films I put on.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: And it is trash, and I am trash, but I didn't even I don't even know why I re-watched it for this podcast.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: I know it so well.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: But uh and yet you still don't know the names.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: But but also No, I don't know a single name.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: That's not right.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: It's funny that you don't know the names because it's like they're so irrelevant as well, these names.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: They're so like basic and everything as well.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: And I I think as well, it it's paying homage to the film because she's supposed to be invisible and forgettable, so there we go.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: I can't remember her name.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: There's a point at the start where they say like uh where they make they make a joke about like how nobody knows her name, and at that point I didn't know what her name was still.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: And I was like, are we gonna have is it's gonna be a thing where we never find out her name?
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that would have been better.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: I just refer to her as Britney Snow.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: I genuinely don't know what I know.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Her name is actually Kate.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's uh yeah.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Oh yes, no, I I do know that because she ends the film with um doesn't she um oh not it's not the very ending, but it's like at the um his his party scene where she's like she says absolutely nothing and then goes, This is the real me, this is the real Kate.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Then who's she?
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: So one thing I wanted to ask you that you said you moved around a lot uh when you were uh like how old were you when you moved around then?
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Like just a just throughout like finish your like teen years?
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: Is that um yeah it was back and forth a bunch of times.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Like the first time I was probably about seven, and then like the last time I was about fourteen.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: We were kind of yeah, a few a few moves between those ages.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: So I guess where were you moving, like different countries or different areas?
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um like so uh I'm originally from Scotland and then um like grew up in Australia and New Zealand and then dad had a couple of other work postings also, but mainly the school moves were between Australia and New Zealand and then I I I probably the last move I had was probably at the age that uh forgot her name again, Kate was supposed to be.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like what 16 to 18, somewhere between that.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: I don't know how old they're supposed to be.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: I think yeah, I was guessing about 15, but yeah, some yeah, that would have been my last last move.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: And then when did you come here?
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Uh after I finished uni.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Um I was like, what, like 22?
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: That was how old am I now?
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: I'm 27, so five years ago.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Oh, you've been here five years.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, and then you got plans to stay- are you planning to stay here then as well?
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Like now you've got your comedy career going.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, very much.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: And my whole family's here now as well.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: So are they are they all in London or are they in a like all over the country or in Scotland or uh back up in Scotland, my parents.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Oh cool.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, she's basically like the one change, the one difference I'm imagining is like she moves with her mum, who is like constantly dating around.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Uh every time they have like her mum has like a failed relationship, they move basically.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: And I don't know where like I don't know why this is in so many films.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't know.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: It's such a trope, isn't it?
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Does anyone behave in that way?
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Like other broken up with someone, a new city.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: And then they try and like at like there's the point of the film where her mum gives her like serious advice and they have like a heart to heart, and it's like, no, this this woman who put like I but my parents are great, and I have like but I still had resentment for them having to move me because they had no choice with their jobs.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: But like, if my parents move me because they're just like sad about someone they went, and it's like these guys that she's gone on like one date with, it's like, right, we're moving again.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: It's literally it, it's literally like what she has one night stands with them, it looks like, and then she just like, well, that's me.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: And then the guy just leaves and never talks to her again, and then that's when like oh, it's ridiculous.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe they're never talking to her again because they they come back the next day and she's gone.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: She's like, why did they leave the house?
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Um and her mum is also played by uh Jenny McCarthy, who's like barely older than her as well.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: It doesn't it does doesn't add up because you can see they're like not that far apart in age.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: Exactly, and then there's that like I think it's the opening scene where like the neighbour comes around with brownies and you think it's like a boy her age, like the the daughter's age, yeah, and then he's like, Oh no, I fancy your mum, and it's like yeah, it makes sense because you're probably like two years apart.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fine, go out, checks out.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, everyone they make a whole thing of like at the start, everyone everyone like fancies her mum, but then they like don't bring it up again the rest of the movie.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I thought it would be quite interesting if like John Tucker like had a crush on her or something.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I genuinely I think the first time I watched the film, um well I think I was like 12 at the time, so maybe I'm giving myself too much credit.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Maybe it was the the 32nd time I watched the film, but I think I thought that like they were gonna use the mum in their plan, but then that would have been like really fucked up.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: Penophilic as well.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Like that would have been wrong, but that's where I thought it was going.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: Yes, it would have been wrong, but it wouldn't have been out of place in this movie.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: No, there were a lot of things that weren't right.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Given the fact that the the the uh the the teacher fainted from because of him, I don't think that would have been set out of place.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, he so she she calls every every guy skip because like because they skip town.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: Not the guys.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Like that they're literally the ones that are skipping town.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I I maintain that I reckon these guys are actually like they're just they're just waiting the like standard like what's it like three days to text her back and then she's gone.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: She's like, I'm not waiting for this shit, I'm out of here.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: She has very high expectations.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: But he's like just like basic guys.
- 21:43unknown: Yeah.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: Um and one of one of these skips, one of these guys called Skip still turns up to the new place.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: Like it I think it was a pilot.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're right.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: And she she's like, and the the daughter of Kate is like, oh he um he's just here.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: A layover, and he needs someone to lay over.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: The only reason he's a pilot is so they could get that lighted.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: But it's like but he did follow her to a new place.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: So that's true.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: I wonder if they're moving like one town at a time.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Slowly moving across town.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, like so she moves to this new school and she's invisible to everyone, like nobody knows who she is, or whatever.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Which is like obviously because she's constantly moving.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: Um although that is actually another trope that I kind of love.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, when it's like the beautiful woman that like everyone's like like understandably.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: Well, I love it though.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Like, I genuinely think like my my most attractive friends like don't know they are because no one tells them they are because they assume it.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: So I feel like this trope is actually like spot on.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: Like she's she's gorgeous, and probably everyone's like, yeah, she knows she's gorgeous, so we don't need to tell her.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: And she's like, Oh, like honestly, I think it I think it's a genuine thing.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: Like, you should you should see you should see the egos on my ugly pals.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: Like, it's all of my beautiful friends are incredibly insecure.
- 23:25SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I really so interesting.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: Because I I have I'm gonna I'm gonna make myself look like such a loser here, but I I listened to other podcasts about this film before doing this.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: I didn't know they were oh no, that's I'm I'm annoyed that they've never podcasts about this.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: There are so many people with so many opinions on John Tokemu's die, but all of all of them were saying like it's ridiculous that she thinks she's invisible.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, no, all of my really gorgeous friends feel that way.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: So I feel I feel it, I I think it's I was gonna say it was ridiculous.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: I think it's I think that's the only thing they've got right.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Like she's she's beautiful, so people would just assume, yeah, she knows she's beautiful.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: She she owes a mirror.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Like she also has an insane six pack.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Like what's she does, but did you notice how bad the makeup was?
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Like they'd clearly like they drawn it in.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they'd like contoured it, but like not like blended it well at all.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: It looks very strange, but that's what I mean.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: Like, it looks so she has the six-pack already, like she does have it, but it looks so like so detailed.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: And and also, again, that scene that is the trope that I hate.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: Like, that's clearly gorgeous woman, and you they suddenly see her abs and they're like, Oh my god, you're beautiful.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: It's like, yeah, of course, of course she was.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Like, of course she had that body under her khaki's, like, yes.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: How are you not gonna notice that?
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, how like she's clearly fit, like whether it's done like a big reveal of like Kate's fit.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: It's like, yes, obviously.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: She doesn't even change anything about herself, like it's like she's that the whole time.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, literally, it's not like it's not like some she doesn't have a makeover or anything kind of.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not like some Princess Darus thing where they intentionally make her look like less attractive at the beginning.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Like she literally looks the same, she just takes off her clothes.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Um, but but yeah, it's so there's her, and then there's uh John Tucker, who is um he's the rich guy at school, he's a um he's the captain of the basketball team.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: They mention stuff about him modelling at some point.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Or he could be a model, they say.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Um which comes back later on.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Which and then uh so I don't think they even need to say he was rich or anything.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: He could have just been popular.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Like he didn't need to be like the rich kid.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: No, but uh I mean yeah, and he did need to be for the dates that he was like the the yacht.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's right, yeah, yeah.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, okay, fair.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: But but yeah, he um I find it weird that like he was like the richest kid in school, and like I mean, not that like you could be rich and a nerd, but like the the brother, like I feel like they tried to dress Pen Badgley to look like he was like unattractive, and it's like you you're from the same family.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: If all of the things that they said about him must apply to you.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Like Did you get the impression that they cut like whole segments of like Penn Badgley's story out of this?
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Yes, so like because it's the most ridiculous thing of like obviously it was clear from the beginning, like when oh my god, that's it.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: The first scene he's in pisses me off so much, like where she walks into the library and he's singing.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: Who sings in a library?
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Like, that's outrageous.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Well he's on his own.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: This is true, but in a library, like and and then it he's say he's singing um cheap trick, which is also um I love so um this is this is my one of my favourite things about the progression throughout his career.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: Like that song is in so many of the things he's been in, but like different versions of it, and then so in you it's this like slowed down creepy version, which like like all the lyrics slowed down, it's like I want you like really slowly, and it's um I was about to start singing that and I realize that was a mistake.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: But like I love that that's throughout his create, but anyway, that's it.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: But like when he No, that's really interesting.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: When she walks in and he's singing the song that everybody knows, and she's like, cheap trick, and he's like, Oh, she's the one, she knows this totally popular song.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: I hate that, I hate that so much.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: It's like you're you're cool because you like this song that everyone knows, but but in this world nobody knows who that is.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're trying to sell it like it's obscure, and it's like but the whole reason like you put that song there is because everyone in the cinema knows that song.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: Like it's very they also do it later as well, with like it's not something that everyone knows, but they but she goes, uh John Tucker John Tucker puts on the uh to keep the phone to keep the phone to him as John Tucker as well.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: John puts on the uh the CD and he's she's like, You like Elvis Costello?
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: Yes, and that's because the earlier scene, the the other tucker, which I love that uh I love that they call him the other tucker, um the um when when he says like oh maybe Kate's not into you, she's not like other girls, she likes Elvis Costello, Dave Eggers, and podcasts.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: And podcasts, yeah.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Which to be fair to her, like who knew about podcasts in 2006?
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: Like, she wasn't like other girls.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: But I love that these are like, yeah, like not that obscure things.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: There's some there is a weird thing of like teen movies and Elvis Costello, and I do not understand it.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: Like, what is that about?
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: Is it just like is that the person that they were like, oh, it's just far enough into obscurity that we can pick him, and it's just like just slightly out there that it won't be in the mainstream.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: Like, what is going on there?
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: I reckon that's it, because it's like, yeah, because it's very much that trope of like, oh, she's not like other girls, and it's like but is that the only thing.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: But every girl in an EVT movie likes Elvis Costello, exactly.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she she is like other girls, every other romantic lead.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: But saying that, I don't know, I don't think I've ever met anyone who's like, oh yeah, I love Elvis Costello, especially like our age, like around that R age.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I it's only in films.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so they're but yeah, so so you're right, like because I feel like they did cut out loads of his stuff because there's that that scene where he clearly likes her and then they get together at the end, but he doesn't really appear in the film between them.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: They barely get together at the end as well.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: I I read that they did cut um they cut the last scene where there was supposed to be like a kiss between them, um, and that was supposed to be the final scene, but uh the director said there was just too much kissing in this movie, so she was gonna cut it.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: It's like if you're gonna cut a kiss, don't cut that one.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: Don't don't cut the the the main point, or not the main point of the film.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: I guess though it would be it would be kind of weird because she is like with his brother for 90% of the film.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then you wouldn't be like at the end, like, hey.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, which I say you wouldn't.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: That is literally the film.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, they they give the impression that they're gonna eventually start dating or whatever, but it's like they could also just be friends.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: So they leave it a little bit vague, I guess.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, up to interpretation.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: Yes, maybe that maybe they'll just be lab partners again.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: That we know what they're gonna do.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so that the other two, the other three characters are uh we have Carrie, who's the overachiever, uh, she's uh she's like the reporter at school, um, she's she's getting all the good grades, she's doing like all this extracurricular stuff.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: Then we got uh Heather, who is the her thing is she's the cheerleader, that's her thing.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: She's the head cheerleader, and so she obviously has to date John because he is the head basketball uh he's the captain of the basketball team.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: And then there's Beth, who is the activist, um with an awful lot of slut shaming, so much slut shaming for her.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: So much uh and they give the trope of like the the activist is just like always having sex, basically.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's all it was there were so many lines like um I don't have to give up all meat for you.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: That's so they're all so cringe, yeah.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: And yeah, that they're all I don't know, they all have their own like individual personalities, which I did like about it.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Um and I did it does play into I do I do have to respect John.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: He did pick girls who wouldn't talk to each other, so that's true.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: He did have a good game plan.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: I like how you said I have to respect John.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: So did you have a did you have a crush on him at that time's work when it came out?
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely not.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: I was very much about the other Tucker.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: I yeah.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: Um no, yeah, I I didn't because he was he was the desperate housewives one, yeah.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: I I'd never I'd never watched that and yeah, no, I I from from the get-go, I was like, no, this this one who knows cheap tricky's the one.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: You like you like the uh the one who's like a little bit out there and a little bit's got like got his own personal taste and doesn't have the wants to copy everyone else.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but who actually doesn't copy doesn't have his own uh thing going.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so he yeah, he don't he dates girls from different uh cliques, they say, um or cliques or whatever, and he he does this to get around like them noticing them then realising obviously that he's dating other people.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: And then he also says like um I can't, I'm not allowed to like my dad doesn't let me date during basketball.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: So he like he basically gaslights them into thinking that they're like the the own yeah the only one and then that that that they're going crazy because and like doubting themselves.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean yeah two two minutes ago I did say you've got to respect John, but um I'm not saying that I'm condoning this behaviour.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: No um you're saying he's smart in what he's doing.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: He does it well nice, um, but he's not actually like that scene that scene where um they like just after you find out that that's what he's doing and he's like walking down the hallway and dirty little secret is playing.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: He's like he's um like he walks between the three girls, and they are like they are definitely they can see each other and he's like licking frosting off one of their fingers and then walking to the next one and yeah, he's not he's not quiet about it, is he?
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and like like I know that they don't talk, but other people talk.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the other thing.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: Like, how does no how is no one else aware in this world?
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I get I get the fact that these three girls probably like they're from different groups and they don't talk to each other, but there's a there's a big enough pool of people who would witness that.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Like one of one of the cheerleader's friends might be walking past while he's with one of the other girls, like and also the um the um the scene where um Kate first notices that he's the the restaurant scene where he's like with a different girl each night.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Um there's the other waitress who's working with her, who like it it's just like a former girlfriend.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it it's obviously just exposition, so we know what's going on because she's like but but she's like crying and she's like um that yeah, as you say, like clearly a four like someone he's done this to before.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: And it's like if he's done this before, then word must have got around that he does this.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Like, how do these girls and then and then and then at the end of the film, like I don't know if this is really acceptable, but like Pan Padgley's character is like, yeah, he's John Tucker.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: Everyone knows he does this, he does this, so it's fine.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: It's like okay, so they do know.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Like everyone, everyone is aware.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: Are they just in denial about it, maybe?
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're leaning into victim blaming here, but yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: Um but he yet they they they only find out because the the coach, the teacher passes out because he winks at her.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: Because he's so and she has to go to the hospital, and then they have all the gym classes.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: Not just the hospital, she has to go into early retirement.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: Oh I missed that.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: One of my favourite lines in the film is just this voiceover of it being like, shit.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: No, it it wasn't John's fault.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: John didn't know that she had a cute angina.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, I yeah, oh it's so creepy.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: The fact that she faints from a 17-year-old boy.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and she's obviously old enough to go into early retirement.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: So it's a bit fucked up.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: Um so they yeah, they they they all go into this gym class, and then they all start like talk one of them starts talking about dating John, and then the other one gets jealous, and then they all get the three of them get into a fight, and uh Kate tries to break it off, and they all at the four of them end up in detention.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: Um she meets Scott, uh the other brother, who like this is when she sees his own.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: She's early to detention and he's sending another.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: Like the big nerd she is, they have to make it clear.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: So like first time in detention.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: I think they want to like Yeah, make it uh yeah.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Uh so is he like wait, is he coming out of the library because he's been in detention or something?
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: I think he's just been hanging out in the library singing at the top of the life.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: He's another nerd.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: That's why they're perfect for each other.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, they all go to yeah, basically they go to detention, they like get into an argument, and then they all end up at Kate's house and they'll show up there.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, also she's brand new at the school, they've never met her before, yet they know her address.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: There's got to be like a GDPR breach there like that.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, in those days in in these movies, they always like there's there's the one that there's the trope of everyone has everyone's number in the school, and then everyone knows where everyone lives.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: Some weird thing about that in all in every teen movie.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and they all just I don't know if they coordinated it with each other, but they all turned up at her doorstep at the same time.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: These three girls who don't talk to each other all decided to rock up at her house at the same time.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: Kate left early and then they all discussed it, and they're like, no, we all gotta go.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: Exactly first, you go second, I'll go third.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we can't turn off at the same time.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: We've gotta go one after the other and ring the doorbell.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: Umny was like um Kate's in her room and uh the mum walks in and she's like starts going on about um she's like, Oh, I've got a date tonight, and she starts getting dressed and everything, and then like a few minutes later, she's like, You got a friend at the door.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: It's like just tell her that first.
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: Like, she's got a friend at the door.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: Making that person wait though.
- 39:31unknown: Yeah.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: I in all I'm I must be a very rude person, and all the times I've watched the film, I've never noticed that that those bad manners.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: It's like her first friend, and she's like at the door.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: She's like, wait, make them wait.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: It's because she's what's that's what she does to all the men, and that's why they leave.
- 39:52unknown: Yeah.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: Treat them mean, keep optional.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then they skip.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: Then they skip, yeah.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, they all go to Kate's and they make a plan to take John down, and uh they're gonna make him undateable.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: That's the way they're gonna try and do it.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: That's their plan.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: So they uh they give him this is where it gets problematic because they they give him estrogen pills.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: This I I cannot defend this this part.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: I cannot this is such an awful scene.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: It's it's so terrible and it's awful also awful that it's like it's coming from women.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Like they're the ones that are like, yeah, like also that's like scientifically not how it works.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: But but like it's the toxic idea of like let's make him act like a woman, and then he'll like everyone will hate him.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: It's like, yeah, that's that's not good that that's coming from women.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: Um but like and then that's like he he has the way he acts, it's just like what is what's going on?
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: It's ridiculous, and it's also like like the he's he's behaving like this, playing like he's getting like very, very dramatic playing basketball because of these oestrogen pills.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: It's like have you seen any male athlete ever?
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: Like that's that's that's how they behave.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: That's not uh that's not a female like female hormone thing.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: That's a that's a male athlete behaviour.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: Like, have you seen Novak Djokovic?
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: Like, has he been like is there a group of girls trying to remove?
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like look at Ronaldo, yeah, exactly.
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: Um and then but the yeah, he starts like oh yeah, yeah, so he starts like almost crying, he starts eating chocolate.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in the middle of basketball, he's like, I just need chocolate.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: That's no.
- 41:46SPEAKER_00: Starts complaining his nipples are hurting.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he's like, and he makes a comment about how um he's like um upset about how big his thighs are, as if that's like a response of estrogen, not like years of societal pressure on women.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: Like that's like women feel insecure about their bodies because of s society, not because we're fucking female hormones.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: It's so clear this was written by a man, so obvious.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: But it's also I I like don't know what they were trying to achieve because they made the girls do this, that that the girls did this to him, and it was really toxic coming from them.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: And then and then it's the same that that mean girl's trope of like anything they do to him, he like works out for him, and like all the girls are now hitting on him even more because they're like, oh, you're sensitive.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: And it's like it's it's almost like they tr were not trying to defend them, but it's almost like they were trying to be like sensitivity is a good thing, but they made the girls look like the the really toxic ones, yeah.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Which they were for thinking that like and they also like the the other thing they do to him is they um they send him on a modelling shoot.
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: And he thinks he thinks he's like posing for like this proper like modelling shoot, and then it turns out to be like a herpes commercial.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, which is also stolen from friends.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: That's a thing that Joey did.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: This is like a writer's room of people who had just been watching other stuff.
- 43:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, literally then.
- 43:25SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, so like the one weird thing about that is that everyone so as soon as they see him in it, they all know who he is, and everyone in the cinema stands up and starts throwing popcorn at him.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: Everyone in the cinema knows who like I get that everyone in the high school, because he's the popcorn guy at high school, but like also at the very end of the film, like when the credits roll, there's a scene of like these girls in Tokyo who see a picture of him, and it's like I miss that.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Uh uh You have to stay past the credits like an absolute loser.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: But it's it's right, it's right at the end, and it's like But yeah, it's a thing of like him being in the cinema and everyone knowing who he is.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: Like they they're not gonna you're in high school.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: He's like just about known in the high school.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: Like that that's that's that's who he is.
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: He's known in this high school world, and nobody else is not gonna know him outside of that.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: And if he's actually getting away with the thing that he's doing, he can't be that known.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: Like no.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: It doesn't make sense.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: I love that part where um but then he he that that's a success for him as well.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: Well, like he becomes like an ambassador for STDs and everyone praises and he gets an award for it.
- 44:40unknown: Yeah.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: Which they even question in the movie, they're like, Why is he getting an award for this?
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he like and then there's a that um there's this scene of like the the it cuts to the audience when he's getting that award, and there's the two deaf girls who are talking to each other.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: That's what I mean, yeah.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and they're like, What why is why is he getting an award?
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: And they they say it's for the clap, and it's literally they clap.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't know if that's the actual sign language for clap.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: I should have looked that up before I started commenting on it, but there's probably no like specific word for it, so like that's why it's a sign for it.
- 45:18SPEAKER_00: Um there's probably no specific sign, so that's why they're like, or just do that.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: Um because it is slag, isn't it, anyway?
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: Um true.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: But I still can't get over this like all the stereotypes they they make about women when he takes the pills.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um it's truly, truly awful.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: But af after that, they also even if it did work, even if that was a thing, and we're gonna ignore all of the how offensive it is.
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: As if it would act like work that fast.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: He takes it and then he's on court five minutes later.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: It's true, it's the same time, isn't it?
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: No, but he doubles up the dosage.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: Oh well, sorry, that's on me.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: It works two times as fast.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: Of course it worked.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: So it works in five minutes instead of ten.
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: Well, there we go.
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: No notes.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: Um, but then this is like all these other women love they start falling for him as well, and then it only makes them like him more, and then he decides to dump each of those girls.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 46:23SPEAKER_01: And the way that he so it goes from um like these girls thinking that he's really sensitive, and one of them's like a peer support counsellor or something, yeah.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: And then he starts the scene of breaking up with the other girls by being like, So I've I've been talking to some to my peer support counsellor about my emotions, and saying you've just been hooking up with that girl.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: It's amazing.
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, like and then they all slap him, and then they find out that they find out that uh Beth still slept with him.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: Yes and breakup sex.
- 46:57SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: Um but this is when they come out with a plan to uh for Kate to date him.
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: And to make him fall in love with her.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: And then like break his heart.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: Um and so they do that by making her immediately making her the head like one of the head cheerleaders.
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: Or like the top of the pyramid.
- 47:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love the girl that on the like the the middle of the pyramid who's like, yeah, it's your first day, of course you should be on the top.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: But they make her a cheerleader and then like just for that scene and then like never again.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just suddenly because she's cheerleader, she's like that there's that scene where she has like five bags all of a sudden, and she's like, It's like you you just need a gym bag now, like, chill out.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: Uh this is what but this is what John notices.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: He's like um, because he sees her walking down the hallway.
- 47:52SPEAKER_01: She's no longer invisible.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: He's like, who's that?
- 47:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he also says it to a girl who he's just really hurt.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: He's like, Who's that?
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: Who's that girl?
- 48:04SPEAKER_01: Like, to the girl that he's just done.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: It's like, we're on good terms, right?
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: By the way, who's your hot friend?
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he just so callously broke up with her by saying, What was it that he says?
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: Because I say it back to him, it's like, um, there is only one girl for me, but it's not you.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: Like, what an unnecessary way of breaking up with someone.
- 48:25SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine anyone ever saying that to you?
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: That's horrible.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: It's so it's so unnecessary.
- 48:35SPEAKER_00: You can say I don't think we're right for each other or something, but like that's what I'm saying.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: There's only one person for me on this planet, and it's not you.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, so they make he also makes Scott spy on Kate.
- 48:51SPEAKER_00: Spy, I say, but like not really spy, but like find out information about her because he's he's working like on their part lab partners.
- 48:59SPEAKER_00: Um which Scott just uses as an excuse to like get closer to her anyway.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:05SPEAKER_01: But like also, I mean, I I never understand these films where like the siblings are so like different and don't like you feel like I mean it would the film wouldn't happen if he just said, you know, oh I actually like this girl.
- 49:33SPEAKER_01: Like when um when Scott's like, he's not my type uh he um she's uh is is she even your type?
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: And he goes, My type is all girl or my type is girl or whatever.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like surely Scott can say at that point, like, oh I actually like this one.
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: So Well, find another one, yeah.
- 49:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and find anyone else.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but he just doesn't say anything.
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: It's like just say to your brother that you fancy this girl.
- 49:58SPEAKER_00: Like you get the impression it's happened before.
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:04SPEAKER_00: Uh but this is where they yeah.
- 50:08SPEAKER_00: So Scott finds out like information about her, but like just you he's just talking to her, basically.
- 50:12SPEAKER_00: Um he doesn't really relay any information back to John.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: He he does, but not like intentionally, it's the Alvis Costello thing he relays back, but it's is with him being like, You wouldn't you wouldn't be into her.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: She's deep, she listens to Alvis Costello, and then John Tucker John Tucker's like, I'm deep, I'm dating the whole poetry club.
- 50:33unknown: Yeah.
- 50:37SPEAKER_00: But um, yeah, so like they they give Beth uh not Beth, they give um Kate a boob cam.
- 50:44SPEAKER_00: Yes, which they refer to it as amazing quality, the footage that they get from like amazing technology for like that time as well.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and also like the the they end up showing the footage from this supposed boob camera at the end, and it's from a different angle, like and it and it involves Kate in it, so it's like positioned on her body, and then you see her from profile.
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: So that's not I didn't even think of that.
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: It's like amazing quality, it's like HD, perfect sound, yeah, and from a different angle where it's not even where you could she's fully in frame.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that makes no sense.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: Um, but yes, they send her on a date with John.
- 51:31SPEAKER_00: Um where do they go?
- 51:33SPEAKER_00: It's for the restaurant.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: Oh no, it's the beach, yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 51:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it does that like thing of like, I'm staring at the view, and she's like, the sun sets over there.
- 51:44SPEAKER_01: No, it's you.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: So it's so fucking textbook critique.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: It's so bad, but they're all like, oh, he's on his A game tonight.
- 51:54SPEAKER_00: It's like that would never work.
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: It's like the like Christmas crackers of pickup lines.
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: Shut up.
- 52:04SPEAKER_01: So generic.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: It's like, wow, he's really, he's really won her over with that one.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: Uh but it does kind of work on her as well.
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it does, to be fair.
- 52:16SPEAKER_01: Um and you know what?
- 52:18SPEAKER_01: Uh worse has worked on me, so I might have a touch.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: Oh no, Anna.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: There's a reason I like this film.
- 52:29SPEAKER_01: My life is tragic.
- 52:32SPEAKER_00: So what you're saying is anyone all you need to do is like pull out a Christmas cracker line and that will work on them.
- 52:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just just just tell me that you like Elvis Costello.
- 52:45SPEAKER_00: Um so they go, they go to go they go to get a ride she goes to get a ride home from him, and uh basically uh Beth gets Beth goes to like talk to her first um to like pep talk her into it and because she's worried about like not she's worried about having to kiss him.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: So Beth decides she's gonna have to show her how to kiss him.
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because she does that whole thing of like, well, are you a good kisser?
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: And she's like, How do you know?
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: Well, do guys tell you her?
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: But it's funny, she's like, 'cause one thing I found funny about that was like they give the impression that she's never been like around guys, but then she that then they give then they do that where they give this whole thing of like, oh, she's kissed a lot of guys, but they they've never sold it.
- 53:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and also they like she could do whatever she wants, it's her choice, but they're very much they've very much set her up as like a girlfriend girl.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: And then they've said that she's not like and she's also like 15, 16, so like it's very normal to not have had experience at that age.
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: But then they could have just said, like, oh, I haven't kissed anyone before.
- 53:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but they've set her up as this like, yeah, completely inexperienced girl who's like a girlfriend type of girl, and then they're like, but she's got loads of kissing experience.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: It's like, really?
- 54:05SPEAKER_01: Does she like?
- 54:06SPEAKER_01: She's like, that doesn't track.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: Um but they they say, like, oh, you've only got to have one kiss with him, and so she shows her how to kiss him, basically.
- 54:18SPEAKER_00: Purely an excuse for those two to kiss.
- 54:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:20SPEAKER_00: And like, and I bet I bet they put that in the trailer to like get like teenage boys in.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: Was it was it in the trailer?
- 54:28SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 54:29SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen the trailer.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have to go back and then I'm surprised I haven't, but yeah, they definitely would have put that in.
- 54:36SPEAKER_00: Um but then Beth has to like hide in the back of the van because uh because of whatever it is, he's like pickup truck or whatever it is, or whatever the thing is.
- 54:47SPEAKER_00: Um and this is where we get uh the Elvis Costello line because he's like reaching for the C D and he pulls out that one CD he has, which is that.
- 54:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:59SPEAKER_00: And then he and then because Beth is in the back of the thing, and they're like, she's like, Oh, can you walk me to my door to like distract him?
- 55:06SPEAKER_00: And Beth gets caught on the door.
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, and then yeah, her skirt's stuck, and then I I love at the end of the scene when she like she has to like she has to take the skirt off so she can get away, and she's like, I um it's not even my day, and he still gets me out of my skirt.
- 55:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they did make me laugh.
- 55:29SPEAKER_00: But they um they kiss basically at at the door, but the sprinklers go off and it sets off like the an electric shock because she's got the camera attached to her.
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I love that like when he I don't know if I'm reading this wrong, but I feel like he like because he touches his lip afterwards and it's like he thinks that there's like electricity between them, and it's like no that's a smart yeah, like that they really like connected.
- 55:57SPEAKER_01: It's like no, that was just a technical malfunction.
- 56:01SPEAKER_00: Like, no, that's definitely what it is.
- 56:03SPEAKER_00: I think that's definitely what they're going for.
- 56:06SPEAKER_00: Um but then they go on another date on of on a yacht.
- 56:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, as as teenagers do.
- 56:14SPEAKER_00: How rich is this guy?
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, do they s do they even give any con they just they don't say like this is my dad's yacht or like they just they just end up on a yacht.
- 56:26SPEAKER_00: Like and they dance, and this is where um Kate starts falling for him, basically.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, I I I love the like it just like everything everything goes in his face, like everything works out.
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: Like nothing ever doesn't yeah, but like and it he like I love the line where they're dancing and he's like um he said some she says something about um dancing professionally or something.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: There's some line that she says, and then he's like, Well, there were scouts at last year's prom.
- 57:01unknown: It's like what the fuck?
- 57:08SPEAKER_00: Can you have one thing go badly?
- 57:10SPEAKER_01: One there's like dancing with the stars scout.
- 57:17SPEAKER_00: I mean he did go on to do that, so did he?
- 57:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, good for him.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: Everything's coming up, John.
- 57:27SPEAKER_00: Um they it basic basically like then uh what's her name?
- 57:34SPEAKER_00: Uh Carrie goes and records inside the men's locker room.
- 57:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:40SPEAKER_00: Like secrets, you know, sneaks in and records them all.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: Definitely like that's that's child pornography.
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: That's um that's not okay.
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not on.
- 57:52SPEAKER_00: But uh but they catch him like bragging to the guys about how he's gonna sleep with Kate's that's getting literal literal locker room talk on camera.
- 58:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:02SPEAKER_00: Um and they go to the they they all go out to the away game.
- 58:07SPEAKER_00: I think this is the only reason that um they make her a cheerleader as well, so that she can go to the away game later on.
- 58:14SPEAKER_00: They have an excuse for her to go.
- 58:16SPEAKER_00: Um because they send No, in fact, they send all of them, don't they?
- 58:20SPEAKER_00: In the end.
- 58:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:22SPEAKER_00: But there's no re there would be no reason for her to be there otherwise.
- 58:25SPEAKER_00: It wouldn't make like he wouldn't he'd be like, why are you here?
- 58:28SPEAKER_01: All of the other girls are there.
- 58:29SPEAKER_00: I guess the It would make sense for like uh a shan't say.
- 58:34SPEAKER_01: It wouldn't make sense for the vegan.
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, only her only she wouldn't make sense, yeah.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:39SPEAKER_01: The one that who records everything would be there because she's like, yeah.
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: She's a reporter, so yeah.
- 58:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:45SPEAKER_00: Um anyway, like it's I'm looking too deep into it, but yeah.
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: An otherwise perfect film.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: Uh they show her the video of what uh so like she gets angry because she's like, I don't think I can do this anymore, and then and then they're like, but what about this video?
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: And then she's like, Oh, I'm gonna take him down.
- 59:09SPEAKER_00: And so they set her up, they put her in like these like sexy, sexy underwear that she's got and in a dressing gown, and get him on webcam with her.
- 59:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and then then she's like, There's something for you under your bed.
- 59:25SPEAKER_01: How did they get that there?
- 59:27SPEAKER_01: Like, I need to know.
- 59:31SPEAKER_01: I can't watch a film without like being like, well, that's not that logistically, that wouldn't happen.
- 59:39SPEAKER_00: They know the exact room he's gonna be in.
- 59:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: Uh and she's like, Oh I yeah, they sent they they sent him a thong to wear, basically.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
- 59:52SPEAKER_01: That's the thing that they're like, look under your bed and the thong's there.
- 59:54SPEAKER_01: It's like, how did you know which one was gonna be his bed?
- 59:57SPEAKER_00: Like you oh yeah, that's the one.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_00: How do you know which one's gonna be his bed because there's two beds as well?
- 1:00:03unknown: Exactly.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_00: Um I feel so bad for that other guy as well.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_00: He's just like a just hangs on to like every word that John says doesn't do anything.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_01: His like best friend in it, I guess.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like three lines in the whole movie.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: I forgot he existed as well, so yeah, poor guy.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so John puts on the thong and then like sneaks to what he thinks is her room, but is in fact the coach's room.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_01: Yes, and also that he they he goes out via the like the very dangerous outside route.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: And they're like three three rows down and then two floors up or something like that.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: Scales the building in his car.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_00: He's got a towel tied around him, which is not the easiest thing to move with.
- 1:00:58unknown: Yeah.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_01: It's like you know, you know, in New York Minute.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I watch such trash.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: Did you ever see that American Ashley War film?
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: You know, when they're scaling the building in their dressing gowns.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: I don't remember that.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: I barely remember that movie.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's very understandable.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: But it's like I I watch it being like, no, this is so unsafe.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_01: Of course, this is a stupid film.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_00: Speaking of that movie, I did see I did when we were talking we were talking about um Cinderella story, I saw those two back to back.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: Um when I was working at a I did like a work experience thing, and I got to see those back to back before they came out.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: Oh, did you?
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: Those were the two were the two I was allowed to see.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_01: Well, because no one else wanted to.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_00: Because no one else wanted to, and I was like too young to see anything else that they were releasing.
- 1:01:48unknown: Yeah.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_00: So like, go see those ones.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, I haven't seen New York Minutes since that, and I was like 15 or whatever at the time.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: 14 or something like that.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_01: What why would you watch it?
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_01: Once is enough.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_00: But Cinderella Story, great movie still.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_01: Indeed.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_01: Um But yes, sorry, you're saying he's scaling the building.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so he scales the building, um, and they he shows up into the room and he likes he's like lies there in his thong, and then the teacher walks in and like drags him out.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_02: By the year, yeah.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_00: By the year, and then everyone comes out to see what's going on, sees him in the thong, starts recording it, taking photos on their like very old.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_01: So those those are the photos that end up in the credits, like when the girls in Tokyo are looking at them.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: That's like it's not gone viral.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is 2005 or whatever.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_01: This is not gonna it's child pornography as well.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_00: Like, it's not gonna it shouldn't be sent around the world.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_00: I didn't even look at that.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: I keep forgetting because he looks so much older.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because he's 28 years old.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_00: Um but then like he everyone thinks he's gonna get embarrassed, but he shows up to the next day to school in the wearing the thong, and he's like, it's so much better for you, and like it's so much breezier, and you can move around, and he does like this insane front flip to score to dunk the ball.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_01: As if as if your ability to flip has anything to do with your underwear.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_00: And also a thumb definitely would make it harder.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like they're not they're not comfortable, he's like they're breezy.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_01: No, they're not.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_00: And so the next thing is like all the men start wearing them to play basketball.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_01: And it's like it's it's this that it's that same mean girls thing of like everyone starts to like it's not just the students, they they see like builders bend over and you can see their phones, and it's just like who is that influenced by this child?
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_00: He's so generic as well.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: I do not understand it.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_00: It's like there's nothing like that stands out about him, I feel like no, he's just yeah.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_00: Um but then he like he decides he's gonna give her his watch and say, like, do you want it to be my girlfriend?
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when in the history of the world has that been a thing, like take my watch, say my giant watch that doesn't fit you as well.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_01: I I but they do it in the film as though it's a thing, like is it though it's a an accepted tradition that people do.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_01: Be my girlfriend, have my watch.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_00: This shows my commitment.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna give you my Rolex.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, is it is it like I'm gonna give you all of my time?
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I hate myself.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_00: You should have written this.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_01: He could have at least said a line that cringe.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_00: You've seen you've seen this enough that you can start like giving little key motives to these things.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: I will do the I will do to this movie what they did to mean girls.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_00: Give this movie a rewrite.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_00: A modern day version.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_00: Um and yeah, she's fallen for him at this point.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_01: Um and then it turns out it's gonna be his birthday party, which look Which is also like a fucking What is this party?
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_00: Like It's a club, it's a There's strippers there.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_00: It's like the biggest biggest party I've ever seen.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_00: It's like one of those sweet 16 parties.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's do you remember that show?
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_01: Um I I I I know of it, I never watched it, but but I I can imagine that that's that's what they were going for, because that was like so big at this time as well.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: That show was huge at this time.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_00: And so I think that's what they were like.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_00: I think he's riff I think the writer was ripping that that off as well.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean there's nothing in this film that's not ripped off.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: Something else.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, so his birthday party, it's it's crazy.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_00: It's like it's the biggest party I've ever seen.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_01: And it's also like, how like how can this guy have gotten away with dating everyone and yet have everyone at his birthday party like everyone's there?
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_01: You are friends with everyone by your birthday party logic.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_01: It would make more sense if it was just his clique.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_01: It all falls apart.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_01: But this is like pretty much the ending where they they they uh they hand over a CD, they're like, oh, this is like a nice gift for him and again it's all of this footage that it's like how did they get that?
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_00: This is this is where it gets really ridiculous, yeah.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like the the scene of the scene of so we we've just watched the scene of um of him giving her his watch.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_01: And then literally that same footage is used as though it's been recorded by like their spy cams, and it's like, no, that was that was literally the same footage, it's the same angle, it's the same, it's the same scene that we just watched, and you're pretending like that was filmed by spy camera.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_01: Surely, surely he would be like, How did you get that?
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_00: That's one thing I wrote down.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_00: I was I said, why doesn't he question anything in that video?
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like if someone was he just thinks it's normal.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, of course.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_00: It's very like everyone loves to film moon, of course.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, is it is he Zack Stone?
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_01: Like, what did you ever watch that?
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like he must be.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_00: What a niche reference there wasn't.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_01: I oh I love Zack Stone.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_01: If you ever want to talk about something that I think is genuinely the best, I mean besides this.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_00: Such a shame I got cancelled.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, it should never have should never have been cancelled.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_00: Um but he uh like they could they all come clean on stage.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_00: He like he comes clean about everything as well, and he's like, No, I have been awful.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_00: Um this isn't right, and then all the guys.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_01: Because that's how a teenage boy would react to being called out.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, he would definitely double down on it.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because that his friends in the front row are like uh like because he says something like, Yeah, and I do pretend to be someone I'm not to get girls, and his friends like, yeah, that works.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's exactly what would happen.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh it's awful.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_00: Um but but yeah, that then they all start like throwing drinks at the girls.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's just like it turns into this like cutesy food fight.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then it turns into a food fight.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_00: And then they're all like, oh no, I'm just gonna tell the truth from now on.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna be honest about everything.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I but I I love I love that like he says that like I am gonna be honest going forward, and he does he is like it ends like after that.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_01: He's like I think the final scene he is in is him walking down the hall and being like, Yeah, hey Jennifer, I'd like to introduce you to my other girlfriend, Jill.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_00: He's just being like openly polyamorous now, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_00: Um and they they seem like kind of concerned about it still, they don't seem happy.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, they're not they're not in polyamorous, like he's in a polyamorous relationship, they're not.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_00: He's like, deal with it.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_00: Uh and then they then this is the final scene where they like Scott and Kate talk about being lab partners again, which was like added in as a like replacement for the kiss, like a scene where they were supposed to kiss.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they were supposed to end with them kissing and then they just changed it because they says the director thought there was too much kissing in the film and changed the scene to a rekindling of friendship.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_01: What what's the I feel like this film is incredibly PG.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_01: There was not that much kissing.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_01: There was the there was a there was the the girl on girl kiss, but there was also just what like one other kiss.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_01: I guess John Tucker did kiss all of them.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_00: But like it weren't exactly like there was no Penn Badgley kiss.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, poor guy.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_01: Um he just wants her to want him.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_01: Come on!
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_02: I'm so sorry.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_00: And it said the ending was filmed two very different ways, but it decided to end the film on a more upbeat note.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_01: So that's decidedly they decided that was more upbeat than expected.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_00: I think they're talking about it says it took 12 hours to clean up the set afterwards, so I'm assuming they're talking about the uh the honesty thing at this, the food fight stuff.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_01: Were they thinking of just ending it there?
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_00: No, I think that was supposed to end for him badly, but it ends on an upbeat note for him.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay, right.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_00: Which no, I want to say that should have ended badly for him.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_00: He should have had his camuffins.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_00: Like he doesn't have anything bad happen to him.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_00: He's still fine.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_00: At the end, he's like still happy.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, every it's just like yeah He's not a good person.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, and I th I don't like the scene where like Scott is like um like he says to Kate, um yeah, he pretends to be someone he's not so that he can um get someone to fall in love with him.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_01: I can't imagine the kind of person that would do that.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_01: And it's like you're coming down on her hard for doing that while simultaneously like absolving John of all of that.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_00: Like you're just like she's a girl, girls shouldn't do that.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_01: Girls shouldn't do that.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_01: John Tucker, everyone knows who John Tucker is.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but get over it.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_01: It's not a good one.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_00: Everyone knows deep down what John's like.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_00: That's just John.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_00: He's like, everyone loves John.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_01: I know I've spent half of this podcast being like in John's defence, but it's bullshit.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_00: I love how everything's fit in John's defence, but you still hate John.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, so much.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_00: And you still love uh Penn Badgley as well.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_01: There's some of my own issues coming through there.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_00: Uh so that's that's the end of the film, except for the scene that you mentioned, uh, which I have not seen.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: When when does it come?
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: Like after the credits, or is it like is it like one of those Marvel credit things where you have to wait through the whole thing?
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a waste of time.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_01: It's like it's I don't know why they bothered.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_01: But like I guess the the only like experience.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_01: Um guilty.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_01: Um but you know the actual last line of the film.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_00: Right, what um No.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_00: Be honest, no.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean that is a normal response.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_00: Um I watched this last night as well.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_01: It's um it's Kate saying she kind of like gives a like summary of like where everyone went with their lives afterwards, and then she's like, and what happened to Kate?
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_01: Well, she's a legend.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, yeah, sorry, you did bring that up earlier.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_02: Like what it's what's the point?
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_00: I reckon because they would have I reckon it was supposed to be a line about like, and as for Kate, she found she found her love or something like that, and it was supposed to be him, and then they were like, no, cutting that scene.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_00: But she had she done went on to do nothing, so what else would we do?
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, she went from being invisible to people knowing her, people knowing her for doing something a bit shitty.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_01: What a what a narrative arc.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so is there anything else that you want to talk about within about this specific movie, or should we move on to the the last segment?
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_00: Is there anything you we've forgotten to talk about?
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, I could talk about this for longer than I'm proud of, but I I I think we've covered it.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_01: I have some notes in front of me, but I think I think we've gone through it all.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_00: Another note taker, yes.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_01: It was the only way to like justify like my flatmates have seen me watching this film so many times, and I was sat there with my notebook this time and I was like, no, this time it's work.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_00: No, I've been asked through this a swear.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_02: This is just for my personality.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_02: It's just you there sobbing.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_00: But how do you hum over again?
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_01: It's just me like writing down tips.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to like see how John does it.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_01: Coming up with a game plan.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_01: No, that's awful.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know I know you're joking.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so let's move on to the final segment then, which is do you have a reverse of this, which is the um a movie that is universally loved and praised by critics and f and fans that you actually think is a bad movie?
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_01: Um, I I I I think probably Lord of the Rings, but um I I I can't give it a fair review because I fell asleep in the cinema.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_00: Um was it was this the first one?
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it was the I mean it could have been any.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_01: Whatever whatever one came out when I was about nine or ten.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_00: What do you remember then about them?
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_00: Or what you saw?
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_00: Do you remember much about it?
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_01: I remember the popcorn, and then I remember feeling sleepy, and then that that's it.
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_01: I I don't remember a single part of the film.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_01: I um no, no, I can't I can't even I can't even comment.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_01: You could tell you could tell me anything that's happened and I would believe you because I've really not a fair review for me to not see it and judge it.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_00: But so wait, when you were nine or ten or whatever, so like I feel like that would have had to be the third one as well.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so that would have been like 2003.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that would have been the third one.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_00: So you went in like not knowing six hours of plot as well.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_01: But I feel like six hours of Lord of the Long's plot could probably be summarized to men go to mountain.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, kind of.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_01: Kind of there's that again, I'm gonna I'm gonna quote trash instead of this, but there's that um that OC quote um that always like appears on Twitter.
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_01: Um what is it when um the um oh one of them's talking about broke rep mountain, and she's like that uh they they they're always watching that film with the gay guys on the mountain, and then the other one's like, what, Lord of the Rings?
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_01: That's um that's all I know about Lord of the Rings.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_00: Again, all what you know about Lord of the Rings is thrown is taken from a teen TV show.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, all of my knowledge about the world.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_01: I am 27 years old.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_00: That's very funny, actually.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, it would have been the third one.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_02: So the first one was like the first one would have been like the rings?
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_02: Is that the first one?
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_00: Fellowship of the ring, yeah.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_00: Okay the first one is like setting up everything, second one is like all the battles, which you wouldn't have.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_01: Wait, so they had a a whole film to set it up.
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_01: That's unnecessary.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_00: Well, I say setting up, it's like it's setting up where they're going and then they kind of start going on there.
- 1:18:16unknown: Okay.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_00: They but like it's it's to the point where they get to a certain p place and then it stops there, and then they set and then the second one is like to do with them battling, and then the third one is like them getting like destroying everything and like it ending.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_01: So like it does have like it's weird because it has like the three-act structure within the And I I joined in Act Three, yeah, and you joined in Act Three very briefly.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_00: So I can imagine it made no sense, first of all.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_00: First of all, you'll be too young to be like, yeah.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_00: First of all, you were too young.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_00: Second, you joined at the end of the movies.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I can't even remember why.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, my cousin uh worked for Weta.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_00: Um for what?
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_01: Wet Weta, um that's the um what does it stand for?
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_01: Um it's the company that like did all of the like CGI and um Weta workshop.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_01: It's called um Does it stand for something?
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_01: No, it's a Mari name.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_01: Um that's why I thought it was uh an acronym, but yeah, um they did like all of the things and like the I've your cousin worked for that and then you're you're out here going, I hate Love the Rings, it's so boring I fell asleep.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_01: Sorry, Luke, if you're listening.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_00: I will say you did a very, very good job.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_00: Like the CGI of that is amazing, especially as it progresses throughout like that's the other thing.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_00: Like, there's Gollum in the first one to the third one, he like looks so different between the three of them.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_00: Like it really progresses.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_01: I did go to the like Weser workshop where they have like I the art is impressive.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_01: I uh I I feel like the plot is not for me, but the the the the art and like the detail that they had on like the the models that they had there was so impressive and like the everything that they made looked real and it's very cool.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_01: Did you ever visit the uh I didn't fall asleep on the on that trip.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_00: Did you ever visit the uh what do they even call it?
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_00: Hobbiton, I guess, like where they actually you can actually go and visit like the set stuff.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_01: I've not as I I think that's in Auckland, isn't it?
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_01: I've not I've I've I've not I've not been to that.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_01: But um I mean it would be probably a rogue move for someone that couldn't stay awake during the film.
- 1:20:47SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_00: It just I've seen every picture of the game.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_00: Doing it for the ground.
- 1:20:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it just looks nice in general.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so like you I guess you fell asleep and you remember nothing about it then.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_00: Do you remember any characters even?
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_01: I was about to say Jar Jar Binks for that style.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_01: So to answer your question, no.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_00: Is that another movie you have not seen?
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_01: I have I have seen the one with Jar Jar Binks, and I know that that's the one that's like so it's the worst one, but I fucking loved it.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_01: I love trash.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_00: It's so boring.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_01: I know that people like think that like Jar Jar Binks is like the worst character.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_01: I I dressed up as Jar Jar Binks for Halloween.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_01: I loved I um I'm all about trash.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_01: Like here you are doing this podcast with all of because you study film, right?
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you have all of this knowledge of film, and I'm just like I love trash as well.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_00: I I wouldn't do this podcast if I didn't love trash.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_00: But look at all the movies on this list.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_00: I know they're not great, but I still love them half the time.
- 1:22:01SPEAKER_01: True.
- 1:22:01SPEAKER_01: If if I if I was a critic, they wouldn't be on this list because they would have higher reviews.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to find any good uh let me I'm trying to find the good reviews for this move for for um John Tucker.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_01: Like asking me what film that like a a a good film that I hate though would be like so harsh considering considering I'm like John Tucker Must Die.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_00: Wait, what is your favourite movie?
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_00: What's your favourite movie?
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_01: My genuine favourite movie.
- 1:22:34SPEAKER_01: Say two.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_01: If I if I had to pick um Jennifer's Body, which has a really low review on what's going on.
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_01: Um but I love that film, and I also love eighth, eighth grade.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_00: Um that makes sense given your love of Bo Burnham.
- 1:22:50SPEAKER_01: I I do like some some decent stuff.
- 1:22:53SPEAKER_00: Those are both great movies.
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_01: I redeemed myself.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_01: I wasn't judging you, I was just like I was I was judging myself.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_00: I don't know about I can't say for the same for the listeners, but like I wasn't judging you.
- 1:23:09SPEAKER_01: Um I was listening to like that other episode you've done, and I was like, they sound like solid films.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_00: You said you listened to Norbit.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_00: That's not a solid movie.
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_00: That's terrible.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_01: I've never seen Norbit, but Erica, Erica made me want to.
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_00: I'll let her know you said that.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_00: She um yeah, she even she's is aware that it's not a good movie.
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_00: It's like half ironic for her.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_00: It's bad, it's so bad.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_01: I I mean I've never seen it, but I I from from the from the podcast, it it did sound bad.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_00: It's just offensively bad as opposed to like John Tucker, which is just you know, fun, bad.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_00: I mean there's definitely offensive within it, but yeah, this this has like a couple of offensive things in it, but like it's not Norbit, which is Norbit came out the same year as this, I feel like.
- 1:24:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, didn't it?
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_00: Or maybe like one year after this or something like that.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_00: Doesn't hold up.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, okay, so I think it's a good place to wrap it up.
- 1:24:20SPEAKER_00: Uh thank you so much for doing this.
- 1:24:22SPEAKER_00: Um thank you.
