- 0:00Speaker 1: Right, let's get Elena up here and get our theme
- 0:03Speaker 1: music going and get a wellness check. I need some
- 0:07Speaker 1: wellness check. I think I'm a court low Elena?
- 0:13Speaker 2: Are you there?
- 0:14Speaker 3: Hello? I am here?
- 0:15Speaker 2: Why you're a court low of you? Yes? My wellness
- 0:19Speaker 2: is down a quart, little.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Little low on wellness. Okay, let's see if we can
- 0:23Speaker 3: we can fill that back up.
- 0:24Speaker 2: All right, all right? What do we got here today? Oh?
- 0:27Speaker 1: Okay, I just opened it up. Oh smoke in the air. Yeah,
- 0:33Speaker 1: not good.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Yeah. So we're talking today just about some tits to
- 0:38Speaker 3: help yourself stay safe while the air is full of
- 0:42Speaker 3: smoke from some all of our wildfires. And you know,
- 0:46Speaker 3: I'm feeling pretty lucky today because I do have some
- 0:50Speaker 3: view of my blue skies. But earlier last week it
- 0:54Speaker 3: was it was not so.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Nice, pretty dreadful. Yeah.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yeah, how can it?
- 1:00Speaker 2: I mean, how can it hurt you? What?
- 1:04Speaker 3: Yeah? It can make it a lot harder to breathe.
- 1:06Speaker 3: It can cause asma taxs, things like that. Also, if
- 1:10Speaker 3: people have pre existing conditions, it can be very unsafe
- 1:16Speaker 3: for like COPD, heart issues, things like that. So it
- 1:21Speaker 3: can be pretty dangerous.
- 1:22Speaker 1: So what do you suggest people do? Do you?
- 1:26Speaker 2: I mean, should you check the air quality every day.
- 1:30Speaker 3: You know, you really can if you use the air
- 1:33Speaker 3: Quality Index. They actually have an email subscription option. I
- 1:39Speaker 3: get an email every night that's predicting the air quality
- 1:43Speaker 3: for the next day, and I use that to help
- 1:46Speaker 3: me plan if I'm going to do an outdoor workout
- 1:49Speaker 3: or an indoor workout, or you know, try and stay
- 1:52Speaker 3: inside mostly those kinds of things. Do schools use those
- 1:56Speaker 3: for when they're deciding if they let kids go outside
- 1:58Speaker 3: for recess and stuff? I would imagine, So I don't
- 2:02Speaker 3: know that for sure, but I would imagine that they
- 2:04Speaker 3: do tap into this tool.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But what so you say?
- 2:09Speaker 1: And then the next thing he says, Well, if the
- 2:10Speaker 1: air quality is bad, stay indoors. But what if you
- 2:13Speaker 1: can't stay indoors, I mean, you've got to.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Go yeah, yeah, So the first recommendation is, of course,
- 2:19Speaker 3: to try and avoid being outside if possible. And then
- 2:23Speaker 3: if you do have to go outside for your job,
- 2:27Speaker 3: for running errands, whatever it might be, do your best
- 2:30Speaker 3: to wear a protective mask. So something like an N
- 2:34Speaker 3: ninety five is the best recommendation. That surgical masks do
- 2:39Speaker 3: provide some protection as well, and then the cloth masks
- 2:43Speaker 3: they help a little bit, but your best option is
- 2:47Speaker 3: going to be going with the N ninety five masks.
- 2:49Speaker 2: I think I'm going to go with a full scuba setup.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I just have a tank on my back, your tank
- 2:58Speaker 1: on my back, and you know, just yeah that that
- 3:00Speaker 1: might work.
- 3:02Speaker 3: It seems a little uncomfortable, but you know it's up
- 3:04Speaker 3: to you.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Well, I could use the exercise. So and the smoke
- 3:10Speaker 1: will get in your house too, won't it.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Yeah, So do your best, of course to keep windows
- 3:17Speaker 3: closed when the air is bad, and then upgrade your
- 3:21Speaker 3: filters that you have within your air conditioning system things
- 3:25Speaker 3: like that. So just look for the highest quality filters
- 3:28Speaker 3: that you can and also do your best to avoid
- 3:32Speaker 3: creating more smoke inside. So burning candles and incense if
- 3:37Speaker 3: you have a fireplace, it's probably not the time to
- 3:40Speaker 3: be using those kinds of things.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Well that's yeah. Plus it's just hot, you know, you
- 3:46Speaker 2: warm for sure.
- 3:49Speaker 1: So and then what it says here, keep track of
- 3:53Speaker 1: your symptoms health symptoms.
- 3:55Speaker 2: What are we looking for there?
- 3:58Speaker 3: Yeah, so especially if you have, like we were talking about,
- 4:01Speaker 3: any pre existing conditions asthma, things like that, to just
- 4:05Speaker 3: keep track. If you're coughing more than normal, if you
- 4:08Speaker 3: feel a little bit short of breath, try and pay
- 4:11Speaker 3: extra attention to that, and then, of course, if your
- 4:14Speaker 3: symptoms get worse, seek help from your doctor.
- 4:18Speaker 2: You know, I have a.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Nebulizer, and I think anybody can. Anybody can buy one
- 4:24Speaker 1: of those, but you have to get a prescription. If
- 4:28Speaker 1: you want to have you can put just saline in it,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and that works pretty well. Yeah, but you can also
- 4:36Speaker 1: get out but al for it, and I find when
- 4:41Speaker 1: I get congested just the saline will help. But all
- 4:45Speaker 1: works a lot too. So I mean to ask your
- 4:48Speaker 1: doctor about a nebulizer. I think everybody should have one.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Actually, Yeah, there's lots of really great tools out there,
- 4:55Speaker 3: and sometimes it is, like you're saying, just a matter
- 4:57Speaker 3: of checking in with your doctor seeing what is a
- 4:59Speaker 3: vailed for you.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yeah, uh, anything else we need to know.
- 5:04Speaker 3: You know. My final recommendation is just to do what
- 5:07Speaker 3: you can to support your community. If you have a
- 5:09Speaker 3: neighbor that needs groceries, things like that can make a
- 5:13Speaker 3: really big difference in difficult times like this.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, thank you, Elena. Yes, Nightingale, what is it?
- 5:21Speaker 1: Nightingale College Dot?
- 5:25Speaker 3: You can check everything out by visiting Nightingale Dot ed.
- 5:28Speaker 2: O Nightingale dot edu. All right, thank you, thank.
- 5:32Speaker 1: You, thank you.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Alright, there's your wellness chain. Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 1: That nebulizer really, I use it almost every morning. Actually
- 5:45Speaker 1: works very well, clears all the crud out of your lungs.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I've been able to play disc golf for a while
- 5:54Speaker 1: because of the smoke.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's bad, Carrie. That's really bad. Yeah, Bo,
- 6:12Speaker 2: that's what. That's how I usually is that how you
- 6:14Speaker 2: do it.
