- 0:01Speaker 1: Sean Means is here. He is a editor and a
- 0:04Speaker 1: reporter of the Salt Lake Tribune. How many years have
- 0:07Speaker 1: you been there now showing this is thirty four thirty
- 0:11Speaker 1: four years thirty four years of the Salt Lake Tribune
- 0:14Speaker 1: sltrib dot com. Sean is also a movie reviewer and
- 0:17Speaker 1: you can read his reviews at movie cricket dot net.
- 0:22Speaker 1: A couple of movies you didn't see last breath.
- 0:25Speaker 2: YEP survival thriller, Deep Sea Divers, Woody Harrelson and Simul
- 0:29Speaker 2: lou in that and then Riffrat gangster comedy with Bill
- 0:34Speaker 2: Murray and Pete Davidson, At Harris and Jennifer Coolidge. And
- 0:37Speaker 2: I think this the studio has assumed that because it's
- 0:40Speaker 2: the Oscar weekend, just the critics are taking the week off.
- 0:43Speaker 3: And so now you did see soundtrack to a Coup
- 0:46Speaker 3: de Ta.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, this is actually this is a documentary that's actually
- 0:49Speaker 2: nominated for an Oscar this week.
- 0:50Speaker 3: It's a very dense, but it's very stimulating.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Look at not so recent history in nineteen sixty and
- 0:56Speaker 2: the independence movement among the countries in Africa spent decades,
- 1:00Speaker 2: even centuries under colonial rule from from Europe. The focus
- 1:06Speaker 2: here is on the Democratic Republic of the Congo and
- 1:08Speaker 2: the first democratically elected Prime Minister.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Patrice Lumumbu Loumombo. He was young, he was charismatic.
- 1:15Speaker 2: He believed in pan Africanism, meaning that African countries should
- 1:18Speaker 2: be able to decide their own fates. So of course
- 1:20Speaker 2: the US decites he's dangerous, probably possibly a communist, and
- 1:23Speaker 2: that the way to deal with him is to mount
- 1:25Speaker 2: a coup. Now, the weird thing is that CIA and
- 1:29Speaker 2: European officials are, you know, strying to mess with the
- 1:31Speaker 2: government and using UN peacekeepers as cover. As that's happening,
- 1:36Speaker 2: there's a weird thing happening in the world of jazz
- 1:38Speaker 2: because the same US government that's trying to overthrow a
- 1:41Speaker 2: legitimate government led by a black man is also paying
- 1:44Speaker 2: to send black jazz musicians around the world, including to
- 1:47Speaker 2: Africa as good will investors, big name people like you know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespian, Nina Simone, people like that as us.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Where I get my photo of Louis and his wife
- 1:58Speaker 4: in front of the pyramids, was that probably okay?
- 2:01Speaker 3: That would be that would be one of us.
- 2:03Speaker 2: And sometimes those tours were paid for by front groups
- 2:05Speaker 2: for the CIA. Oh uh and and so this this
- 2:09Speaker 2: movie tells it tells this, you know. Uh, intersperses that
- 2:13Speaker 2: story with a lot of jazz music. Oh and it
- 2:16Speaker 2: and it plays like jazz. It played that the movie
- 2:18Speaker 2: plays like jazz in that way. It's a really fascinating
- 2:21Speaker 2: way to recount history. It's really it's like two and
- 2:24Speaker 2: a half hours, and it feels it feels like you're
- 2:26Speaker 2: getting crammed enough information for double that.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Well, Gina will be seeing this. Yeah, my husband, this
- 2:32Speaker 3: is a film he will want to sur Yes, it's uh.
- 2:35Speaker 2: The Keno lrber uh streaming site already has it online
- 2:39Speaker 2: if you want to watch it at home. But it
- 2:40Speaker 2: is at the Broadway and three and a half stars
- 2:43Speaker 2: for soundtrack to a coupdeta. All right, and and you
- 2:46Speaker 2: watch this and you will know one more thing you
- 2:48Speaker 2: didn't know during the Oscars.
- 2:50Speaker 1: So let's talk about the Academy Awards. I have the
- 2:54Speaker 1: Hollywood reporter here, yes, and the guy who does predictions
- 2:57Speaker 1: for them every year by yes, So we want to
- 3:02Speaker 1: start with Best Picture.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Yeah, what do you think?
- 3:04Speaker 2: Well, I think at this point, uh Anura, that's what
- 3:08Speaker 2: he is the one because it's one that. I mean,
- 3:11Speaker 2: there's a lot of stock put in the precursor uh
- 3:15Speaker 2: a War globes and Golden Globes, and the Baptis and
- 3:18Speaker 2: and all the others.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Uh.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Sean Baker who directed Honora, he got the d GA
- 3:26Speaker 2: Directors Guild, it got the Producer's Guild, it got so
- 3:29Speaker 2: it it's it did not get the SAG. The ensemble
- 3:34Speaker 2: went to Conclave for that one, and and Best Actress
- 3:37Speaker 2: there went to I think Tom More.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I think he says that Conclave, that's his second choice
- 3:45Speaker 1: is up there, you know, and the with the Pope
- 3:47Speaker 1: being near death, maybe it'll win.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Well.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I think I think that that'll happen. That started to
- 3:52Speaker 2: happen after the voting was closed.
- 3:53Speaker 3: So I don't know. I think the Pope planned this
- 3:56Speaker 3: well a long time, for a long time.
- 3:58Speaker 2: The batting was that is that the movie that has
- 4:01Speaker 2: the most nominations is going to get Best Picture, and
- 4:04Speaker 2: the most nominations is Amelia Perez. Yeah, and then the star,
- 4:08Speaker 2: then the star of that movie, Carlo Sophia Gascon discovered
- 4:13Speaker 2: she had like nasty tweets in her in her back
- 4:16Speaker 2: in her back pages, and like really nasty nasty stuff,
- 4:19Speaker 2: you know, not Nazi level nasty stuff.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Wasn't the brutalist really making is up there?
- 4:24Speaker 2: Brady Corbet is a possibility for director. I still think
- 4:28Speaker 2: Sean Baker is gonna win. Here's here's an interesting thing.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Sean Baker is nominated because as a producer of the movie,
- 4:34Speaker 2: that's the best Picture nomination. So he's nominated for Best Picture,
- 4:37Speaker 2: Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best and Editing because
- 4:42Speaker 2: he edited the movie.
- 4:43Speaker 3: He could win all four of those.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Oh the last time somebody won four Oscars in one
- 4:50Speaker 2: night was Walt Disney.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Oh really? Yeah? Huh? Is this movie that good?
- 4:55Speaker 4: Why do I feel like this is the first time
- 4:57Speaker 4: I've heard you raving about it?
- 4:59Speaker 2: I didn't get I didn't get to see it when
- 5:01Speaker 2: it originally came out, and so so uh for various reasons.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And I caught up with it like it won the
- 5:07Speaker 2: it won the Palm doord can. I've been Every review
- 5:11Speaker 2: I've read of it is good. It is really good.
- 5:13Speaker 2: It's it is like a screwball comedy and and a
- 5:16Speaker 2: and a crime movie at the same time. And Mikey Madison,
- 5:21Speaker 2: I hope she wins Best Actress.
- 5:23Speaker 3: I think she's really good. The oldest daughter on the
- 5:29Speaker 3: I can never remember the name.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Of She's she's young, she's young, she's young, she's amazing.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I I hope she wins. I have feeling it's going
- 5:37Speaker 2: to be to me more because it's because.
- 5:40Speaker 3: It's the emotional pick. It's the emotional pick. It's the
- 5:43Speaker 3: it's like, we owe it to her.
- 5:45Speaker 2: She's never she's never done anything award level before, and
- 5:49Speaker 2: we want to give it to her.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yeah, the Hollywood Reporter agrees with you. That would be
- 5:53Speaker 1: Demi Moore, Mikey Madison a distance second.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I think the people have been saying Adrian Brodie for
- 6:01Speaker 2: The Brutalist has pretty much got it locked at this point.
- 6:04Speaker 2: It's hard to argue with. I think it's great, it's
- 6:06Speaker 2: a great performance. My favorite, my favorite, frankly is some
- 6:09Speaker 2: of you didn't get nominated. That's John mcgaro for September
- 6:13Speaker 2: five as the as the floor director, h having to
- 6:18Speaker 2: having to juggle everything in the during during coverage of
- 6:22Speaker 2: the Olympics.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, what you know. It's interesting to me
- 6:26Speaker 1: that Sebastian stan is nominated for playing Donald Trump and
- 6:31Speaker 1: The Apprentice, so that who would have ever thought that
- 6:34Speaker 1: that could have tractors and.
- 6:36Speaker 3: The thing is, I think you got nominated for the
- 6:37Speaker 3: wrong movie.
- 6:40Speaker 2: A different man, a great, great performance, great movie I
- 6:45Speaker 2: would have.
- 6:45Speaker 3: I mean, I haven't seen The Apprentice. I still have
- 6:48Speaker 3: not seen The Apprentice. I mean, I can't take it.
- 6:51Speaker 3: I get seriously, I have enough of it. I don't know.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I don't. I tend not to go for movies where
- 6:57Speaker 3: the bad guys win.
- 7:00Speaker 2: But a different Man, it's a great performance, and he's
- 7:04Speaker 2: had a really good year. So yeah, yeah, so so
- 7:07Speaker 2: I don't, but I still think. I still think Adrian
- 7:09Speaker 2: Brody is gonna win. Although if you want sentimental, I
- 7:13Speaker 2: think call him Domingo. Yeah, for sing sing, and for
- 7:16Speaker 2: a lot of different reasons. First off, just getting that
- 7:18Speaker 2: movie made. Uh, And he was and he was the
- 7:21Speaker 2: he was the driver, he was the he was the
- 7:23Speaker 2: spirit to get that movie made. And he had he
- 7:26Speaker 2: had a really difficult job in that movie, which was
- 7:30Speaker 2: he had to be. He was the one actor amongst
- 7:34Speaker 2: a cast of mostly non actors.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Of of of Rookie.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And when you're in that situation, there is there is
- 7:41Speaker 2: a there's a tendency either to overdo it, to to
- 7:44Speaker 2: over compensate for the.
- 7:46Speaker 3: The actor here, yeah, or.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Or you you get buried in the you get buried
- 7:51Speaker 2: in the mix, and he found sort of a perfect
- 7:53Speaker 2: perfect balance between those two.
- 7:55Speaker 3: All right, let's see what how was he best director?
- 7:58Speaker 3: Did we cover that? I think Baker is going to
- 8:00Speaker 3: get it.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I think if it's for an Aura, if it's not him,
- 8:03Speaker 2: it'll be Brady Corbett for the brutalist.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Is the only thing Wicked's gonna win is like costume
- 8:08Speaker 4: design and set design.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Probably some of the are some of the some of
- 8:12Speaker 2: the artistic tech things. Yeah, best costume design, costume costume design,
- 8:17Speaker 2: maybe costume design maybe, uh, hair and megap things like that,
- 8:22Speaker 2: although hair and makeup probably is going to get to
- 8:23Speaker 2: the substance as well.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Yeah, makeup and hairstyling. Hollywood reporter says, the substance. I
- 8:29Speaker 1: don't think I can see that movie. I'm looking at
- 8:31Speaker 1: the I'm looking at this grotesque thing that they created,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and I just got I can't.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I was all you got to make it to the end. Well,
- 8:38Speaker 3: that's the thing, the ending. The ending is just I
- 8:40Speaker 3: was I was all in on this movie until the end. Yeah,
- 8:45Speaker 3: and that's when I went, okay, I'm out. Yeah, I
- 8:48Speaker 3: was with you. The scene in the theater yeah, yeah,
- 8:52Speaker 3: that's when I went, Nope.
- 8:54Speaker 2: The thing is if you think, here's the thing though,
- 8:56Speaker 2: if you think about it, there was no other way
- 9:00Speaker 2: it would end.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I suppose.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Where else would it go if it was going, if
- 9:05Speaker 2: it was going in the direction it was going, that
- 9:07Speaker 2: was the logical outcome.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Well, it just felt to me like the filmmaker was going,
- 9:12Speaker 3: here's your ending. Here, here, and he just kept shoving
- 9:16Speaker 3: it in my face. Here's your ending.
- 9:20Speaker 2: She's she's the one woman actually nominated this year, and
- 9:25Speaker 2: I mean, I think she's great and I can't wait
- 9:27Speaker 2: to see your next movie.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Yeah. Best Animated Feature, Hollywood reporters as well.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Wild Robots got it locked, although there is a there's
- 9:35Speaker 2: a late surge according to all the prognosticators for Flow,
- 9:41Speaker 2: the the wordless movie.
- 9:43Speaker 3: About the Cat. My dog loved that movie. I'll bad
- 9:47Speaker 3: watch the Cat the whole time. It was it was
- 9:49Speaker 3: like watching a video game to me, though.
- 9:51Speaker 2: It was sort of The animation style was very first
- 9:54Speaker 2: person shooter started.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I don't.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I don't usually watch the Oscars anymore, but Conan O'Brien
- 9:59Speaker 1: is the host.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I think that can be so thank you.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Shaw means moviecricket dot net, the Salt Lake Tribune, sl
- 10:07Speaker 1: trip dot com.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Thank you, Sean, thank you, thank you,
