- 0:07Kansas City Royals faced the Milwaukee Brewers at County Stadium in Milwaukee for a Friday night game on June 15, 1979.
- 0:15Kansas City entered the 1979 campaign with a lot of hope, having gone to the ALCS in each of the past three seasons, but losing to the Yankees each time.
- 0:23They were managed by Whitey Herzog, who took over as manager in 1976 from Jack McKeon, and finished in first place in the AL West every year since.
- 0:31Milwaukee had a lot of optimism in 1979 as well, under manager George Bamberger, who had led the team to a 93-win season in 1978, the first time in 10 years the franchise ever finished over 500.
- 0:43This audio recording is from the Kansas City Radio broadcast, featuring announcers Denny Matthews and Fred White.
- 0:49Hi everybody and a very pleasant good evening to you wherever you happen to be around the globe.
- 0:54The Royals and the Brewers set the square off in game one of the three game series.
- 0:58And Mike Caldwell, the left-hander with a record of six and five, sets the face Willie Wilson, George Brett, and Amos Otis.
- 1:05Willie comes into the game batting 342 with two home runs and 10 RBI.
- 1:10He's hitting 455 against the Brewers this year, five out of 11 and one RBI.
- 1:16Willie will be up there right-handed against the spinker baller Mike Caldwell.
- 1:22Now we're set to go. Charlie Moore drops down a sign for Mike Caldwell.
- 1:26Here's the lineup in the first pitch of the ball game. It's a breaking pitch outside.
- 1:31Mike Caldwell making his 14th start, his first start against the Royals this year.
- 1:37He was two and one against the Royals last year.
- 1:40Willie Belk went into left field, Odovay the left fielder coming in makes the catch, and there's one away.
- 1:46Willie Wilson flies to left and now George Brett.
- 1:49The Royals third baseman carries an average of 330 into the contest.
- 1:54Seven home runs, 36 RBI's.
- 1:58George has just one out of ten with an RBI against Milwaukee.
- 2:04Mike Caldwell beat the Royals twice last year.
- 2:09He shut them out here in Milwaukee in May, nine to nothing.
- 2:13And then he beat Paul Splendorf in mid-July here, 13 to two.
- 2:19He lost to the Royals in Kansas City when the Brewers were shut out.
- 2:22The pitch to George Brett is a bit outside, ball one.
- 2:25Bill Howler is a play-dumb player tonight, one of the very best.
- 2:31All three games that Mike Caldwell pitched against the Royals last year were complete games.
- 2:36George after a breaking ball didn't get it.
- 2:39One ball and one strike on George Brett.
- 2:42Base is empty, one away, just the start of things.
- 2:45Bill, make yourself comfortable and spend the evening with us.
- 2:50One ball, one strike on Brett.
- 2:52Amos Otis will be next and here's Caldwell's pitch.
- 2:54Breaking ball is lined to right field.
- 2:56As Cano to his left he makes the catch.
- 2:59George's got a breaking ball lined at straight atlas Cano.
- 3:03Two Royals gone and here's Amos Otis.
- 3:05Amos hitting 298, five homers, 34 RBI.
- 3:11He is six out of ten against Milwaukee this year.
- 3:15So he's a 600 hitter against the Brewers.
- 3:18One home run, two RBI's and he's scored four runs.
- 3:22He batted 300 against Milwaukee last year.
- 3:31Amos fourth in the American League and runs scored.
- 3:35The pitch to Amos is a bit outside, ball one.
- 3:39George Brett by the way leads the American League and runs scored at bats.
- 3:45He leads in hits with 86.
- 3:47He leads in triples and in total bases.
- 3:51Outside and high, two balls and no strikes on Amos Otis.
- 3:59Nobody on, two outs, top half of the first inning.
- 4:04Mike Caldwell behind Amos Otis, two balls, no strikes.
- 4:09Here's the pitch.
- 4:10A little tap, Caldwell off the mound for his first base,
- 4:13underhand toss, in time, side to tire.
- 4:16Two fly balls and a tap back to the pitcher and that tells the Royals
- 4:20throwing in the top half of the first.
- 4:22After half an inning, Royals nothing, Brewers coming up.
- 4:25Let's look at the tales of the baseball games played in the American League last night.
- 4:30Ben Ogilvy smacked a two-run homer as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Texas Rangers 6-2.
- 4:35Bill Travers went the distance in getting the win for Milwaukee.
- 4:38The losing pitcher was the Rangers' Doyle Alexander.
- 4:41Elsewhere, Willie Hickens did his second grand slam homer in as many games
- 4:45as the California Angels with the Toronto Blue Jays 10-2.
- 4:49Hickens became a ninth player to hit bases for homers in consecutive games.
- 4:54The Seattle Mariners spoiled Bucky Anderson's debut as manager of the Detroit Tigers.
- 4:59The Mariners edged a bingo 3-2 when Detroit's Arulio Rodriguez booted an infield grounder
- 5:04in the ninth, allowing Leon Roberts the score from first.
- 5:08John Raleigh got the win for the Seattle.
- 5:10Detroit's John Hiller was the loser.
- 5:12Butch Warniger's double scored three runs during a fourth run, fourth inning uprising
- 5:17to taste the Minnesota Twins to a 42-win over the New York Yankees.
- 5:22Zan worked the first six innings while giving up five hits,
- 5:25and super reliever Mike Marshall earned his 15th save in his 37th appearance
- 5:30by scattering two hits over the final three innings.
- 5:34In the other American late game, Jim Norris' two-run triple in the bottom of the ninth
- 5:38gave the Cleveland Indians a 2-1 squeaker over the Oakland A's.
- 5:42And Monge got the win in relief of starter Len Barker.
- 5:46Jim Todd took the loss for Oakland.
- 5:49Oakland, Toronto by the way after five tonight, it's Toronto leading the A's 2-0.
- 5:55The Milwaukee Brewers come to bat in the bottom of the first inning.
- 6:00Paul Splitorf on the mound for the Royals.
- 6:03Paul hasn't pitched in nine days.
- 6:05He missed his turn against the Yankees on Sunday in Kansas City because of the flu.
- 6:10He's making his 15th start his second against the Brewers.
- 6:13Paul Hollacher leading off, Paul hitting 303 with four home runs.
- 6:1823 RVIs, he has a five-game hitting streak.
- 6:21Paul starts him off with a breaking pitch and it's inside in low ball one.
- 6:26Paul Hollacher, four out of 13 against the Royals this year.
- 6:30He's got eight for 23 in his five-game hitting streak.
- 6:33Fast ball, good cut, he fouled it back to the screen, and the count is one and one.
- 6:39Paul Hollacher in his last 25 games has been a 370 hitter.
- 6:48Sixty-nine hits now for Paul, right-hand batter, Splitorf fits off speed and low and outside.
- 6:54Two balls and a strike.
- 6:59Splitorf has won seven of his last ten decisions.
- 7:05Right up his low, three balls and a strike.
- 7:10The Brewers lead the American League and walks drawn.
- 7:13They've drawn 253 walks.
- 7:16So you better throw strikes to this team.
- 7:18Hounston's all-based at the left.
- 7:20Hollacher opens the bottom of the first with a ground ball single between Brett and Pacha.
- 7:27So what happened is Splitorf ran the count three-one.
- 7:29He got behind Hollacher, then he did throw a strike and Hollacher promptly single.
- 7:34Here's Leesville Cooper throwing his first baseman.
- 7:38Two-pitting 295, 11 home runs, 45 RBI.
- 7:47Leesville is 0 for 9 against the Royals this year.
- 7:55Paul Hollacher at first will bear watching.
- 7:57He has 13 steals.
- 8:01George Scott wearing a Royal uniform.
- 8:04He's holding the runner on.
- 8:05Paul pitches up too high to the left-hand batter.
- 8:07Ball one.
- 8:10Splitorf is tied for a third in the American League with eight victories.
- 8:15He has five complete games and complete games in his last two outings.
- 8:19Good breaking ball for a strike.
- 8:21And it's evened out one-and-one on Leesville Cooper.
- 8:25His most recent outing came on June the 6th in Baltimore.
- 8:29He lost three to nothing.
- 8:30He went the distance with a amount of two eight innings, allowed three runs, seven hits, two walks, and a strikeout.
- 8:37Here's the one-one pitch to Cooper.
- 8:38Coop had an ocean and laid off.
- 8:40It was just outside.
- 8:42Two balls and a strike.
- 8:46Paul is three and four against the Eastern Division team, five and one against the West.
- 8:52He's pitched very well at the Royal Stadium, winning six of seven.
- 8:55He's won two of six on the road.
- 8:58He's played high ball three and is three and one.
- 9:02Paul has been behind three and one to the first two hitters.
- 9:05Well, as we said, he hasn't pitched in nine days.
- 9:08And as he put it before the game, I really don't know what to expect.
- 9:13The runner goes and the pitch is fouled away.
- 9:15The ball was here.
- 9:16The runner at first was running with the three-one pitch.
- 9:19He'll go back to first and now the count is three and two and we'll check him out again.
- 9:25Waiting his turn in the on deck circle, Sal Bando.
- 9:29Three balls, two strikes on Cecil Cooper.
- 9:37Signal given by Gerald Porter.
- 9:38Here's the stretch by Paul.
- 9:40Over to first he goes, thinking that Molitor will be on the move.
- 9:46But they just start against the Brewers in Kansas City on June the 2nd.
- 9:49Went the distance for a four to three win.
- 9:51The runner does go and a ground ball based at the right field.
- 9:55Molitor on his way to third.
- 9:56And the Brewers have first and third, nobody else.
- 9:59And those Thomas Rhodes will be coming up.
- 10:09Boy, that's a perfect example of how tough it is to pitch behind big league hitters.
- 10:16Even with Paul's selection of pitches.
- 10:18The fast ball, the curve ball, slider.
- 10:21He changes off the curve.
- 10:23He'll throw it.
- 10:24It's a great change.
- 10:26It's tough when you're behind.
- 10:28And the Brewers have runners in first and third to prove it.
- 10:30Here's Sal Bando.
- 10:32Bando hitting.28.
- 10:33Four homers, 16 RBI.
- 10:36He has always did well against the Royals.
- 10:40He was tough against the Royals as a member of the A's.
- 10:43Then he changed uniforms.
- 10:45But that didn't change.
- 10:47The ball is a breaking ball.
- 10:49Lewin inside, all one.
- 10:55Sal, right hand batter.
- 10:57Dockley-Bill chokes the bat.
- 10:58He chokes about three inches.
- 11:00Runners at the corner, the 1-0 pitch.
- 11:02Curve ball, a strike at the letter.
- 11:04One and one.
- 11:08Cleveland just pasting Seattle.
- 11:10It's now nine to nothing.
- 11:12Bobby Barnes, home in the third inning with nobody on his eighth.
- 11:16Here's the 1-1 pitch to Bando.
- 11:18Ball did not get the corner.
- 11:20Two balls and a strike.
- 11:22Meanwhile in Toronto, it's Toronto two.
- 11:24The Oakland A's nothing.
- 11:25They play four.
- 11:26The Mets have a 1-0 lead over Atlanta after two at Shea.
- 11:30Two balls and a strike on Bando.
- 11:32Runners at first and third.
- 11:33Hot shot foul outside third.
- 11:36And the county evens out at two balls and two strikes.
- 11:40Detroit one, California nothing.
- 11:42They have played two in Detroit.
- 11:44Marky Anderson now at the helm of the Tigers.
- 11:50When Slidoff beat the Brewers in Kansas City on June the 2nd,
- 11:54he allowed nine hits, three runs, walk five, strikeout three.
- 11:59The 2-2 pitch to Bando, felt as a deep left field.
- 12:02The Brewers were very welcome, and a wall five.
- 12:32One swing of the bat and Sal Bando makes it to Milwaukee three,
- 12:38the Royals nothing.
- 12:40For Sal, a three run homer, his fifth home run of the year.
- 12:43Two singles and a home run by Bando.
- 12:47A very unpromising start for the Royals.
- 12:51Here is Gorman Thomas, a 2-35 hitter.
- 12:53Big curve ball, one and missed, 0-1.
- 12:56For Gorman Thomas, 13 home runs, 38 RBIs.
- 13:07Thomas is third in the league in three passes.
- 13:10He's walked 43 times.
- 13:12Curve ball, strike call, 0-2.
- 13:21Thomas is tied for third in the American league, in home run.
- 13:27No balls, two strikes, right hand batter.
- 13:30Breaking stuff is low, one ball, two strikes on Gorman Thomas.
- 13:35That was the eighth home run that Paul Slidoff has yielded this year.
- 13:42It was good for three, singles by Molitor and Cooper preceded Bando's blast into the left field seat.
- 13:48The Royals one-two change to Thomas and sit on one off the pot deck.
- 13:52Freddy fires to first in time.
- 13:54Gorman Thomas retired, one away and here is Ben Oldenly.
- 14:07The base is empty, one out, the batter is Ben Oldenly.
- 14:10And a 2-32 hitter, a dozen homers, 36 RBIs.
- 14:15He's had his last 12 games as the 3-11, 14-4-45.
- 14:22He's two out of seven against the Royals.
- 14:26Paul Slidoff pitched to the tall, thin left hand batters, low and outside, ball one.
- 14:31Well, the Royals are winding down a stretch of 19 consecutive games against the top four teams in the Eastern Division.
- 14:38This three game set with the Brewers will end that.
- 14:41The Royals strike on the outside corner, overly not so sure, turns and looks at Bill Haller, the plate umpire.
- 14:48The Royals in this stretch of games have won seven, they've lost nine.
- 14:52They beat the Brewers two out of three in Kansas City last week.
- 14:55There's a drive to deep center, back goes Amazotas to the center field.
- 14:59Whoa, he leaps up and makes a catch.
- 15:04Fine, fine play by Royals center fielder Amazotas.
- 15:08He timed his leap perfectly and the only reason that Ben Ogilvy didn't hit a home run, he picked on the deepest part of the ballpark.
- 15:154-0-2 to straightaway center.
- 15:17That's what Otis was when he hauled down that long drive.
- 15:24Here is 6th to Liscano, Milwaukee right fielder.
- 15:27Liscano batting 3-20 with eight homers, 38 batted in.
- 15:31He is hit safely in fourth straight.
- 15:37So Paul Splendorf getting rocked here in the first inning.
- 15:41Three to nothing Brewers, two singles and then Vandos free run homer.
- 15:45Curve to Liscano, right end batters, low ball one.
- 15:57Foot ready and he comes with a fast ball that's down low, two balls and no strikes.
- 16:03Royals still reeling from playing the Boston Red Sox two nights ago, the Red Sox getting 18 hits including four homers.
- 16:11One of them a grand slam, there's ball free to Liscano.
- 16:20Liscano will quite likely swing if he likes his pitch.
- 16:24He took a strike and it's 3-1.
- 16:29He has more power than you would think just to look at it.
- 16:35Fast ball, he chopped it up along third foul, three balls and two strikes.
- 16:41Tomorrow either Marty Patton or Steve Busby for the Royals, Jim Slayton pitching for the Brewers.
- 16:47And on Sunday Rich Gale and Larry Sorensen.
- 16:54And you'd say either Marty Patton or Steve Busby.
- 16:59You can see what kind of shape the Royals staff is in.
- 17:02High ball four and Liscano walks.
- 17:10The batter is shortstop Robin Yowd. Yowd hitting 231, four homers and 17 RBI.
- 17:17Al Robosky is the only pitcher on the staff who hasn't started a game this season.
- 17:22Dennis Leonard hasn't worked since the 24th of May because of inflammation in his right elbow.
- 17:28Steve Busby was forced out of Monday night's game after nine and a third innings because of a full groin muscle.
- 17:34The out of right hand batter takes inside ball one.
- 17:37Paul Splendorf as we mentioned making his first start in nine days.
- 17:43Steven Gore had to start a game against the Yankees, his first start in four years.
- 17:48Breaking ball hit up the middle, takes it.
- 17:52Liscano around second on his way to third on Robin Yowd's single.
- 17:59Out comes pitching coach Galen Sisco.
- 18:05The last thing the manager, Whitey Herzog, wanted tonight was to pull his starting pitcher in the first two or three innings.
- 18:14So I'm sure just because of the physical state of the royal pitching staff, he'll go much longer than he normally would with Paul.
- 18:22But the Brewers are certainly taking liberties here in the first unless Paul can find himself and get his good stuff.
- 18:31It's going to be a long night.
- 18:33The runners at first and third, two down.
- 18:37Three singles, a three run home running a walk here in the inning.
- 18:41The Brewers aren't through yet.
- 18:42Dick Davis, the D8, coming to the plate.
- 18:45Davis in a 266, four homers, a dozen RBI.
- 18:56Darrell Porter out to visit with Paul.
- 19:06Dick Davis right hand batter.
- 19:09Normally when Galen Sisco comes out, that means the bullpen will start.
- 19:13But like we said, the Royals can't afford to have their starting pitcher leave in the first few innings so the bullpen is quiet.
- 19:20The pitch to Dick Davis, bouncing ball deep third.
- 19:23Brett will have a long throw to make and it's on target.
- 19:26Good play by George.
- 19:28George Brett to George Scott by George.
- 19:30The Brewers are up.
- 19:32But they come up with three runs, four hits from the Big Bull.
- 19:35Bando's three run homer.
- 19:37The end of one, Milwaukee three and the Royals nothing.
- 19:40Looking at the National League results from last night, Mick Kelliger, last two out, two runs single off reliever Gary LaValle in the top of the ninth inning to get the Chicago Cubs an 8-6 win over the San Francisco Giants.
- 19:52The hits followed a wild pitch that moved Cubs runners in the scoring position.
- 19:55LaValle took the loss.
- 19:57Cubs reliever Dick Tidro got the victory.
- 19:59Willie McCovey of the Giants.
- 20:00Homer in the third, his 513th lifetime, moving him into ninth place on the all-time list.
- 20:07Another action, Gary Carter's two run double in the eighth inning helped the Montreal Expos beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3.
- 20:13Reliever Elias Sosa pitched two innings of hitless balls and knocked the victory.
- 20:18Atlanta's Gene Garber was the loser.
- 20:20On the West Coast at San Diego, pinch hitter Barry Evans lined a two out single to right center in the bottom of the 14th inning to score Ozzie Smith from second base.
- 20:30He gives the San Diego Pirates a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in a sweep of the three game series from the buttons.
- 20:38After John Candelara making a rare relief appearance, retired the first two batters in the bottom of the 14th, Smith reached first when shortstop Tim Foley booted his grounder for an error.
- 20:48Dave Winfield then drew a walk before Evans smacked his game-winning hit.
- 20:52John DiAquisto now three and four, pitched the final inning to gain the victory and Candelara took the loss, his record falls to four and six.
- 21:00We'll be checking the American and National League scoreboard.
- 21:03A lot of games underway now in a few moments.
- 21:05In fact, there are all the games underway in the American League and there are three in the Nationals.
- 21:10The Drillers leading three to nothing and for the Royals, Al Cowans, George Scott and Darrell Porter will be coming up against Mike Caldwell.
- 21:17Before the Royals bat, let's pause for station identification.
- 21:21This is the Kansas City Royals Radio Network.
- 21:24This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 21:34This is Denny Matthews at Milwaukee's County Stadium.
- 21:37Three runs, four hits for the Milwaukee Drillers.
- 21:39The Royals went down one, two, three against Mike Caldwell in the first.
- 21:43The batter Al Cowans, Al hitting 323, five homers, 31 RBI.
- 21:48Al is three out of eight with two runs batted in against the Brewers this year.
- 21:53Cowans has been coming off the disabled list 14 games ago on May the 30th.
- 21:59At bat at 353, that's 18-4-51 with seven RBI's and five run scores.
- 22:06Al in his five-game hitting streak has gone nine for 21.
- 22:11And he's driven in at least one run in five of his last seven games.
- 22:16Mike Caldwell's pitch is a curve ball low and inside.
- 22:20Al had to be quick with his feet to avoid being spunked in the ankle.
- 22:24One and oh.
- 22:26Mike Caldwell, one and one this month.
- 22:29He lost his last outing to the White Sox, six to two.
- 22:32That was here at County Stadium on the ninth.
- 22:35Mike allowed five runs and eight innings.
- 22:38Six hits, didn't walk anybody, struck out four.
- 22:41He beat the White Sox on June the 4th.
- 22:44That was in Chicago and he shut them out six to nothing.
- 22:47He started the season with wins over the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the Orioles.
- 22:51Nice shot into center field, they sit for talent.
- 22:55So Al the Royals first base runner and now George Scott making his first appearance at the plate in a Royal uniform.
- 23:01And Scottie a former Brewer and he hears the fans.
- 23:04He's a favorite here at O'Holme.
- 23:07George must feel right at home in the sense that this was the kind of reception he was getting in Boston.
- 23:19He was traded to the Royals two days ago for outfielder Tom Pochette.
- 23:25So here's Scottie wearing number zero.
- 23:29Al Oliver of the Rangers also wears zero.
- 23:32And a fitch is on the outside corner for Mike Caldwell.
- 23:41Mike Caldwell, 30 years old, just had a tremendous season in 1978.
- 23:46A 22 game winner, George Scott, hits a high pop foul into the seats down the right field line.
- 23:51No balls and two strikes.
- 23:54Only the Yankees, Ron Guidry, had a better season than Milwaukee Brewer's left-hander Mike Caldwell last year.
- 24:05Mike throws a sinker, a slider, a curve, and a change.
- 24:09And he will keep everything down.
- 24:13He can be a very tough pitcher on a right-hand batter even though he's a left-hander because that sinker will kind of break down and away from the right-hand batter.
- 24:22So he'll get a number of double plays out of that pitch, especially if they try to pull it.
- 24:26Scottie, after a breaking ball, shot the foul right at the feet of the catcher Charlie Moore from the Cattleman 2.
- 24:36Mike Caldwell, a tough competitor.
- 24:39Time was when he would fuss around in the mound and take all kinds of time.
- 24:44But not anymore. He's become more aggressive.
- 24:46He's speeded things up and he's a better pitcher.
- 24:49A five-ball rather deep center. Gorman Thomas back into his left of the warning track to one-handed.
- 24:55And Fowlens almost down the second half to retreat to first.
- 25:00So Mike Caldwell kept Scottie in the ballpark even though George St. Sinterfield and Gorman Thomas back to the wall.
- 25:06One away, here comes catcher Darrell Porter, a Darrell, a former Milwaukee Brewer.
- 25:11Darrell batting 296, seven home runs, 48 RBI.
- 25:27Darrell against his old team this year, three out of seven.
- 25:31Two runs scored, two batted in.
- 25:34Mike Caldwell goes to first. Al Fowlens is back.
- 25:40Nothing special at all about Mike Caldwell's move to first.
- 25:46The Royals feel that they can run on Caldwell.
- 25:49Although now down three to nothing, well that's a different story perhaps.
- 25:53Outside to Darrell Porter, one ball, no strikes.
- 25:57The Royals, maybe more than any team in baseball, will run when they are behind in the score.
- 26:06Darrell gets the pitch in too tight, and they count two and oh.
- 26:11The reason for that, the Royals are not a power team. They don't play in a power ballpark.
- 26:18So even though they trail two nothing, three nothing, six nothing, they'll still play their running game.
- 26:24That's their offense, bouncing ball to second baseman Molliger.
- 26:27Over to Yelp for the force of second and Al Fowlens and that's all they get.
- 26:30Darrell is first with two down and John Loppen coming up.
- 26:34Duke to DH tonight, he's hitting 244 with 14 RVIs and one home run.
- 26:50Milwaukee three, Royals nothing. We're in the top of the second.
- 27:01Beautiful night, rather strong breeze blowing toward left.
- 27:06The temperature at game time was 84.
- 27:10Loppen takes down low, one ball, no strikes.
- 27:16Duke over four against the Brewers.
- 27:20Darrell Porter a very safe lead at first, Mike Caldwell's pitch.
- 27:23What after a breaking ball and this in the count of one and one?
- 27:30He's currently tied with teammate Larry Sorensen for the league's top spot in complete game.
- 27:37Both Milwaukee pitchers have nine complete games.
- 27:40Bouncing ball off the tip of the pitcher's glove.
- 27:42Second baseman Molliger shovels for the church stop Yelp for the force on Darrell Porter.
- 27:46And that retires the side. The Royals in the top of the second, one hit, no runs.
- 27:51One man left. We move to the bottom of the second inning.
- 27:53The Brewers three and the Royals nothing.
- 27:55Okay, let's check the baseball scoreboard now.
- 27:57Other American league action after four innings of play.
- 28:00Cleveland pouring it on Seattle nine to two.
- 28:03They had one in the first, seven in the second, and one in the third.
- 28:06Two runs to Seattle in the fourth.
- 28:08Jones, Seattle is 14th of the year in the fourth with nobody on.
- 28:12California Detroit after three.
- 28:14The Angels lead the Tigers three to two.
- 28:16Bobby Gritch a home run for the Angels in the fourth with nobody on.
- 28:19He is 14th of the year.
- 28:21Five innings of play. Toronto ahead of Oakland three to nothing.
- 28:25Boston and Chicago first inning, White Sox two, Red Sox one.
- 28:30After two, Baltimore leads Minnesota one nothing on a John Loewenstein.
- 28:34Home run into the center field seat.
- 28:36It's sixth of the year.
- 28:38In the second, nobody on. New York and Texas no score after two and a half innings of play.
- 28:44Checking the National League scoreboard now after four.
- 28:47Houston one. Montreal one. Four and a half.
- 28:50The Mets lead Atlanta one nothing.
- 28:52The Mets lead the Mets to play. The Philadelphia Phillies three.
- 28:56And the Cincinnati Reds one.
- 28:58Three late games on the West Coast in the National League.
- 29:02St. Louis to San Francisco. Pete Vukovich six and three.
- 29:05The probable pitcher for the Cardinals for San Francisco.
- 29:07Phil Nassau two and four.
- 29:09Pittsburgh at Los Angeles for the Pirates.
- 29:11Burt Lylev in two and two.
- 29:12For the Dodgers, Don Sutton six and six.
- 29:14Chicago Cubs at San Diego.
- 29:16For the Cubs, Rick Ruschel five and five.
- 29:19For the Padres, it's expected to be Eric Rasmussen.
- 29:22His record so far three and six.
- 29:25In Milwaukee, it's three nothing Brewers.
- 29:27Three runs on four hits for Milwaukee as they sent eight men to the plate in the first inning.
- 29:31Val Vando a three run home run following singles by Molitor and Cooper.
- 29:35Here's Charlie Moore the catcher, the number nine hitter, and Charlie takes the strike.
- 29:40Charlie Moore batting three sixty two with a home run and fifteen RVIs.
- 29:46Right hand batter, split or curveball of beauty, strike two.
- 29:50Charlie Moore in his last twenty eight games has twenty nine hits and seventy five at bat.
- 29:57That figures out to a three eighty seven average.
- 30:01Inside a fastball, got his attention.
- 30:05One and two.
- 30:08John Lowenstein has Fomers for Baltimore in Minnesota.
- 30:12And the Orioles have taken a one to nothing lead over the twins, Lowenstein Fomer his six.
- 30:16Lowen outside is ball two and two now to Charlie Moore.
- 30:20Lowenstein Fomer run came in the second inning.
- 30:23Rupert Jones, a former Royal has Fomer for Seattle.
- 30:27Curved strike three call. Charlie Moore fooled by a breaking pitch.
- 30:33For ball split off his first strike out.
- 30:36And the second baseman Paul Molitor who extended his hitting three to six with his first hitting single.
- 30:42Rupert Jones home run in the fourth inning with nobody on was his fourteenth.
- 30:47But Cleveland way out in front of the Mariners nine to two.
- 30:51The Angels have tied the Tigers in a home run by Bob Gritch.
- 30:56That came in the fourth inning with nobody on.
- 30:59Gritch is a ball. One ball no strikes on Paul Molitor.
- 31:06The left hander deals. Off speed breaking pitch out of the strike zone.
- 31:10Ball two, two and oh.
- 31:17Signal given the two oh pitch.
- 31:19Ball three.
- 31:21Paul walked a man in the first inning. He walked Liz Cano.
- 31:26The problem started working behind the hitters.
- 31:30There's a strike three and one.
- 31:32He fell behind both Molitor and Cooper. They both singled.
- 31:36He was two and two on Sal Bando and Sal Homer into the seats and left.
- 31:40Molitor a wicked swing and a fast ball and he fouled it back to the screen.
- 31:44Full count three and two.
- 31:49The Brewers started the night tied with the Boston Red Sox for the American League lead in home run.
- 31:55Now 68 team home run.
- 31:57Bouncing ball passed the mound. Backhanded by White.
- 31:59Frank will have no play. It'll be an infield single for Molitor.
- 32:04Frank made a nice play just to get to the ball.
- 32:08Once he came up with it in short center field on the backhand he had nowhere to go with it.
- 32:12Molitor had already crossed the base.
- 32:16Hit number five for Milwaukee here in Cecil Cooper who like Molitor singled and scored his first time up.
- 32:22What to the Rasmus bag now doing a little landscaping down in front of the pitching rudder.
- 32:39The Royals team are on average as the rudder runs slightly 4.53.
- 32:48One ball no strikes on left hand hitting Cecil Cooper.
- 32:58One on one out three to nothing Milwaukee. Here's the pitch.
- 33:02Power ball backing out of play.
- 33:07Cecil Cooper had a good cut of that pitch.
- 33:20One ball and one strike on the Milwaukee Brewers first baseman.
- 33:26Cooper now has 73 hits for the year.
- 33:31He checks the runner. Here's the pitch. That ball is high. Two balls and a strike.
- 33:40Cecil Cooper had a fine year in 78. He batted 312 with 13 home runs.
- 33:4554 RBI.
- 33:48High fly ball right field.
- 33:50Howins to his right. Still drifting to his right.
- 33:52Calling for the ball and makes the catch.
- 33:55And Molitor back to first.
- 33:57Cecil Cooper is just two home runs behind his output of the 1978 season.
- 34:05Here in the second he's gone on a fly ball to right and here is Sal Bando.
- 34:11Sal hit his sixth home run of the year in the first inning with two men on.
- 34:14And that's the ball game at this point.
- 34:16Three nothing Brewers. Bottom of the second.
- 34:18Runner in first. Two down.
- 34:20All split off. Checking in with Darrell Porter.
- 34:25Darrell drops down a sign. Paul Splittor set up the belt.
- 34:28There goes the runner. Bando takes inside and no throw as the ball is blowing inside.
- 34:34Darrell could not come up with it.
- 34:35And Molitor has his 14th still in base.
- 34:45So a chance for Sal Bando to get his fourth RBI of the game and his 20th of the year.
- 34:53There goes Molitor towards third and no throw.
- 34:57Ahead for his fly.
- 35:0115th still in base. Molitor got a tremendous jump.
- 35:05Neither Potjeg nor Frank White very close to second base.
- 35:09Paul didn't pay that much attention to Molitor.
- 35:14And even though with two outies not that much better off at third than at second, Molitor figures what the heck.
- 35:21If they don't care, I'm going.
- 35:25So an infield hit. Wild pitch, pass ball and air could get the Brewers their fourth run.
- 35:33Two balls, no strikes. The ball is behind Sal Bando.
- 35:38Eyeball free.
- 35:47Bando checking with Bob Rogers his third base coach.
- 35:50Let's see if they have the cuffs on Sal.
- 35:52The 3-0 pitch. Now he's swinging and what a cut he had. He fouled it back.
- 35:58It figures that Bando is swinging. Here's your number three hitter. You're leading three to nothing.
- 36:03There are two out and runner in third. Why not?
- 36:09Already the 3-1 pitch.
- 36:11Breaking ball well-prone and the best Bando could do with that pitch was to top a foul right at the feet of Darrell Porter.
- 36:16Three and two.
- 36:25All-spin on his lifetime against Milwaukee.
- 36:28Eleven wins and six losses. Bando takes out five all-for.
- 36:39Batter Dorman Thomas. Thomas bounced out to Patek his first time up.
- 36:53Big strong right hand batter. Dorman Thomas 6'3, 2'05.
- 37:02Dorman is 32 home runs last year. Thirteen so far this season. Runners in first and third, two down.
- 37:11After a breaking ball he topped a foul. No balls and a strike.
- 37:18Dorman Thomas will see a lot of breaking stuff, off-speed pitches.
- 37:24All through both that time and off-speed turf.
- 37:30Molitor third, Bando at first, two down, bottom of the second.
- 37:34The Brewers by three and threatening. The one strike pitch to Thomas.
- 37:39Curve ball missed. One and one.
- 37:45The start of a ten game trip for the Royals. Three here in Milwaukee, then four in Oakland, and three in Anaheim against the Angels.
- 37:52Back home to play the A's and the Angels.
- 37:55One one pitch to Thomas. Bounced up along third foul. One and two.
- 38:03The meetings of the A's and the Angels will be the first of the year between the Royals and those two ball clubs.
- 38:15One ball, two strikes on Dorman Thomas.
- 38:18Three runs, five hits for the Brewers. No runs, one hit for the Royals. The Royals hit a single by Al Collins.
- 38:27Paul has the advantage in the count.
- 38:31The left-hander at the belt, and the one two pitch.
- 38:34Fast ball just missed the inside corner.
- 38:40He talked about the guessing game between pitcher and hitter. Paul had thrown him a lot of off-speed stuff.
- 38:45He got a few curve balls, and then falls together with Darrell Porter, feeling that Thomas would be looking that way.
- 38:51Tried to sneak the fast ball on the inside edge, but barely missed. Now the two two pitch.
- 38:56Back to the curve, and a wide drive into right field. They miss.
- 38:59Hollister scores. Bando checks in his second, and it's four to nothing Brewers.
- 39:06I'll say this about Dorman Thomas. He didn't try to pull the pitch or fight it.
- 39:11He just curved it ever so gently over Frank White out in the right field.
- 39:15Thomas drives in his thirty-ninth run of the year. Four to nothing Brewers on a half a dozen hits.
- 39:20There's Ben Ogilvie. Ogilvie sends center fielder Amos Otis back to the wall for his long drive in the first.
- 39:38And here's our stretch, a curve into the dirt. Ball one.
- 39:45Well, the Royal Bullpen can wait no longer. Eduardo Rodriguez begins to throw.
- 39:50Eddie, a former Brewer, two on, two out. One ball, no strikes.
- 39:58Huge power off the end of the bat. It rolls into the Royal dugout.
- 40:01One and one to count on Ben Ogilvie.
- 40:09It has been a long and tough two innings for Paul Slidov.
- 40:15He has struggled. A ball and a strike. Here's the pitch.
- 40:20Curve ball is pulled down the right field line, hooking foul into the seat.
- 40:24Ogilvie did not have a good swing at all. In fact, he's hooked the bat.
- 40:28He was so far out in front of that slow curve, he hit it right off the end of the bat and tacked it.
- 40:36One ball, two strikes on Ogilvie. Ben, a former Red Sox outfielder, first baseman. He also played with the Tigers.
- 40:48Ben had a fine season in 78, hitting 303 with 18 home runs. 71 RBIs.
- 40:54He raised fifth in the American League with that 303 average.
- 40:58He was ranked ninth in the league in slugging percentage.
- 41:05One ball, two strikes. Slidov checking the runners. Here's the pitch.
- 41:09Into the dirt, knocked down by Darrell Porter, no advance.
- 41:14Darrell couldn't find it for a second, but then he heard the ball hit behind him and to the left.
- 41:23He made a good play to keep the ball that close to him.
- 41:26It was a tough pitch to handle, a breaking ball into the dirt.
- 41:29A breaking ball in the dirt, much tougher for the catcher than a fast ball in the dirt.
- 41:33Here's the 2-2 pitch. Fast ball missed outside, 3-2.
- 41:38Now the Brewers will have the additional offense of the day of having the runners move.
- 41:42Vando with slightly below average speed at first, Gorman Thomas, about average speed.
- 41:48Back into a second, Thomas the first. Frank Howard, the first base coach, marking some instructions.
- 41:53There go the runners. Bouncing ball up the first base line, foul.
- 41:59Paul made a great pitch that time. He had Ben Ogilvy hopelessly tied up with a pitch right in on the hand.
- 42:06And Ogilvy, a half swing, almost a check swing, just dribbled one up along the first base line.
- 42:13Unfortunately for Ben Ogilvy, the ball just veered off foul.
- 42:18So once again the runners will be on the move. Vando from second, Gorman Thomas from first.
- 42:24Foot are ready and now the 3-2 pitch to Ben Ogilvy.
- 42:27Sharply hit ground ball, but right at Frank White who bobbles, recovers and throws out first.
- 42:32Ben Ogilvy to refire the side.
- 42:34So the Brewers, out of all that, get one run on two hits.
- 42:38They lead two, they stranded four, and after two innings in Milwaukee the Brewers four, and the Royals nothing.
- 42:44Let's recheck the scoreboard now. The American League, Bobby Gritch having quite a night.
- 42:49He's got two home runs so far, the ex-Oreo has, for the California Angels.
- 42:53First one in the fourth, nobody on his 14th. Again Gritch in the fourth with one on for the Angels.
- 42:58His 15th of the year. So California leading Detroit five to two.
- 43:02And three of the runs responsible for the big bat of Bobby Gritch.
- 43:06Seattle and Cleveland five innings, the Indians pouring it on the Mariners nine to two.
- 43:10Six and a half, Toronto four, Oakland nothing.
- 43:12Nothing further on Boston, Chicago one inning of play.
- 43:15The White Sox lead the Bull Sox by a score of two to one.
- 43:18National League scoreboard four innings, Houston one, Montreal one.
- 43:21Four and a half, Mets one, Braves nothing.
- 43:24Three and a half, Cincinnati leading Philadelphia four to three.
- 43:27And of course later starts, as we mentioned, Chicago at San Diego, Pittsburgh at Los Angeles, and St. Louis at San Francisco.
- 43:34The Minnesota Twins today reactivated third baseman Mike Kovach.
- 43:37We've been on the disabled list for the bad backs since May 28.
- 43:40Kovach resides in offseason in Charlottesville, Virginia.
- 43:45He played the high school ball in Charlottesville, which is not too far from Washington, D.C., and was also quite a football player.
- 43:53To make room for Kovach on the roster, infielder Dan Graham was optioned to Toledo of the AAA International League.
- 43:59Graham had only four bats with the Twins.
- 44:02And the Milwaukee Brewers announced tonight they're sending relief pitcher Lance Rossum to their AAA Farm Club in Vancouver.
- 44:08The Brewers reduced the roster to 24, leaving one spot open in anticipation of the return of Don Money, who's out with a poor hamstring.
- 44:15We play two innings at County Stadium, Milwaukee.
- 44:17The Brewers lead the Royals four to nothing. Four runs, six hits, no errors for Milwaukee.
- 44:22The Royals, no runs, one hit, and no errors.
- 44:25Frank Leifert, Fred Patek, Willie Wilson coming up against Mike Caldwell, and here's Fred.
- 44:30All right, thank you, Danny. The Royals are going to have to get some offense if they're going to stay in it.
- 44:33Paul Spiddler, having been rocked the first two innings, still in the ballgame, trying to find himself.
- 44:40But the Royals need to produce something.
- 44:43Frank White, a 284 hitter.
- 44:53Light-headed batter in.
- 45:02First pick two, and misses ball one.
- 45:04Frank Savage, who's up 284, three homers, a dozen RBIs.
- 45:12He's a high-pop foul back to the plate.
- 45:15Show me more to take a look, but he doesn't have a play.
- 45:17And it counts even one ball, one strike.
- 45:19Frank just back in action after missing 32 games with a broken hand.
- 45:36A couple of games against Boston under his belt. It was first thought that this would be the first time he had played.
- 45:43So the Royals' injuries are healing up now. Al McCrae could return.
- 45:50So if they can get their pitching load straightened out, maybe they can get everything all turned around.
- 45:54They've struggled a plate. The Royals have won the two of their last ten ballgames.
- 45:58The pitch, Frank's in front of the bunt, takes a pitch outside, ball two, two and one.
- 46:03Well, it's really an improvement, we'll see.
- 46:10Now Cowan's got the Royals' only hit off Mike Caldwell in the first two innings.
- 46:16A pick to Frank White, a sharp shot down to the third baseman, Sal Bando throws him out.
- 46:20Bando to his left a step or two, throws out Frank White.
- 46:24Now here's Fred Pockett, a 236 hitter.
- 46:41Pockett missed a couple of ballgames with a sore leg, he's back in action.
- 46:45Pitch to him, ball high, ball wide.
- 46:54Mike Caldwell doesn't walk many minutes, he's around the plate all the time.
- 46:59The pitch is the outside corner, now two and O to Buddy.
- 47:03One of the few times Caldwell's only been behind a hitter.
- 47:07Willie Wilson next if anybody gets on, George Brett.
- 47:11Two O pitch, Mike Caldwell is two and one, Buddy taking.
- 47:18A three run first inning home run by Sal Bando, the big blow in the ballgame.
- 47:24Here's the pitch, hot shot headed from left, Robin Young can't get there, base hit.
- 47:29So funny Pockett singles.
- 47:33And now Willie Wilson, who has got on a five ball to the left his first time up.
- 47:37The way those have their second hit of the ballgame.
- 47:42Willie taking a look down at Chuck Giller, his third base coach before he steps in.
- 47:53Willie and Chuck can't get together every time Willie looks, Chuck looking the other way, Chuck gives signs and Willie's not looking.
- 48:00Bando shortened up a third, the outfield playing Willie straight away.
- 48:08You can see the outfields in the American League starting to show Willie a little bit more respect, the pitch to him, long and this.
- 48:14Early in the year they all played him very, very shallow but now they've retreated to normal depth.
- 48:23One strike to Wilson, Charlie Moore put down a sign, Caldwell's ready, left-hander pitch.
- 48:29It's low and the count evens out 1-1.
- 48:39Caldwell, Pregnadier's cap, picks up the sign, here's the stretch and the pitch.
- 48:45Ball inside, breaking stuff in this, two balls and a strike to Willie.
- 48:52The beginning of a ten-game road trip for the Royal Three here in Milwaukee, four in Oakland, three in Anaheim.
- 48:58Well you realize this will be the first meeting this year between the Royals and the A's and the Royals and the Angels.
- 49:04Ground ball, pass third, two to the cap now.
- 49:11Willie got one fouled off.
- 49:13Well you would think that the Royals, the A's and the Angels weren't even in the same league let alone the same division.
- 49:22They will have played 65 games by the time they see the A's, 69 by the time they see the Angels.
- 49:34And 69 games is only a dozen shy of being half a season.
- 49:47Up by a Ron Lucey, Adilard's first sibling around is now done and we're ready to play again.
- 49:52Here's the stretch, two-two pitch.
- 49:55Ball outside and a ball count, three and two to Willie Wilson.
- 50:02And Caldwell, very consistent at throwing strikes, three and two now with Willie.
- 50:09He doesn't want to walk, he needs to get breath to the plate.
- 50:12It's four to nothing Brewers, here's the stretch, now the pitch.
- 50:15There goes Potech, the pitch fouled off.
- 50:17Still a full count, three and two.
- 50:25The Royals had Buddy Potech on the move.
- 50:28Now Caldwell walks off the mound, goes to his mouth for a moment, steps right back up.
- 50:36Cooper trying to hold Potech at first.
- 50:39He's aboard with one out, we're in the top of the third.
- 50:41Here's the stretch, the pitch again, Potech not running and a high fly ball.
- 50:45Well hit the left center, the Gorman-Thomas is over there, brings it down and they're two men gone.
- 50:51Willie hit it well but he's out.
- 50:54Potech at first with two out now for George Brett.
- 51:00George hit the ball hard but lying to right his first time up.
- 51:08George a 330 hitter, he was but one for 10 against Milwaukee and Kansas City in the three game series.
- 51:13So he's just one for 11 against the Brewers right now.
- 51:19He undoubtedly feels his FBOs in a few hits.
- 51:23Left hander against left hander, Caldwell and Brett.
- 51:26Potech elated first, the stretch and the pitch.
- 51:29Chopped foul by Brett, one strike to count.
- 51:34After three, the Phillies leading Cincinnati three to one.
- 51:38After five, Houston one, Monterey all one.
- 51:42California leading Detroit five to three after four in Detroit.
- 51:46Toronto five, Oakland nothing after seven.
- 51:49Cleveland nine, Seattle two after five innings.
- 51:53White Sox in front of Boston two to one after an inning.
- 51:56The pitch here to Brett, breaking ball for a strike and George in the hole, O and two.
- 52:02The Yankees and the Rangers are tied one one after four.
- 52:05And Baltimore leading Minnesota one to nothing after three.
- 52:12Caldwell with working room now.
- 52:15O and two to count, here's the stretch and the pitch.
- 52:18Way low on outside, the count's one ball two strikes to George.
- 52:25Since the first of May, George Brett has been one of the hottest hitters in all of baseball.
- 52:33Oh, he just came to life.
- 52:36One two pitch on the way.
- 52:38Line and left field, it's a foul ball, just barely.
- 52:42George had a twisting line drive over third that looked like it was going to drop in fair territory.
- 52:48But at the last moment it twisted foul.
- 52:52So it cost Brett extra bases, it might have cost the Royals a run.
- 52:57Zero one and two and George.
- 52:59A long walk back to the plate to try it again.
- 53:03Amos Otis in the on deck circle, hopeful of hitting if Brett gets the board.
- 53:11George talking to the play down by Bill Haller taking a look at where the ball landed.
- 53:19Now Brett back in and Caldwell again looks to Charlie Moore for a sign.
- 53:23Potek will eat it first, here's the stretch, the one two pitch.
- 53:27Ball outside and the count evens out two two.
- 53:36Caldwell in no hurry with a man on base, he has slowed down considerably.
- 53:42Now he's ready, here's the stretch and the two two pitch to George Brett.
- 53:45He breaks contact instead.
- 53:51Potek does not have a big lead at the moment.
- 53:56Dick to Brett, ground ball to second.
- 53:58Bobbiter has it on the big hop, goes to first and the inning's over.
- 54:01Brett out second to first, the Royals unite in the top of the third, no runs or hits.
- 54:05They leave a man and we go to the bottom of the third, it's still the Brewers four and the Royals coming.
- 54:10Slow game so far at Milwaukee County Stadium, how about this score now?
- 54:15We just got something in on the Western Union ticker in the AAA international leg.
- 54:19The Rockets, the Red Wings and the Toledo Mudhands.
- 54:23They played sevenings and we're trying to figure out on the computer the score.
- 54:27Rochester had nine in the first, nine in the second, nine in the third, two in the fourth, nine in the fifth, nine in the sixth, nine in the seventh.
- 54:33And the old Rochester Red Wing, our engineer, Chief Bartlett going wild in the control room, hold it Ralph, hold it, sit down.
- 54:41Toledo nine in the first, nine in the second, nine in the third, two in the fourth, nine in the fifth, one in the sixth, nine in the seventh.
- 54:48So it's Rochester 56, Toledo 48.
- 54:54So now Chief Bartlett is kind of a little concerned now about whether they can hold them off or not.
- 55:00Chief Bartlett is the honorary mayor of the city of Rochester and he's winging it of course there in the control room for AFRTS tonight.
- 55:06Let's check some more scores and we'll check back in that wild ball game, 56, 48 and see if I'm sure.
- 55:13I'd type a traffic alert somewhere over either that, they've got the Little League pitchers in there.
- 55:18California, Detroit, four and a half innings to play.
- 55:20The Angels five, the Tigers three, New York and Texas after four and a half.
- 55:24It's all tied up. The Yankees won, the Rangers won.
- 55:27Baltimore, Minnesota, they set his home run in the fifth inning.
- 55:31The Orioles now lead Minnesota by a score of two to nothing.
- 55:38Bottom of the third, four to nothing Milwaukee.
- 55:40We owe you a station break. We'll get through it as quickly as we can here.
- 55:43The first six to six to Lescano now back out of play and we'll take a right here.
- 55:47We'll pause ten seconds for station identification on the Royal Baseball Network.
- 55:54This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 56:01The Bluehorns have Lescano, Yelp and Dick Davis scheduled to hear here in the bottom of the third.
- 56:05Pick low into the dirt one and one.
- 56:08They have great ball footwork for four runs and six hits over the first two innings.
- 56:13Foot babbling to get things turned around.
- 56:15Close the one-one pitch.
- 56:17Breaking ball for a strike.
- 56:19Curve well thrown and it's one and two.
- 56:22Lescano walked his first time up.
- 56:24A three-twenty hitter with eight home runs.
- 56:27Pitch to him.
- 56:28That ball outside, two and two.
- 56:35The outfield.
- 56:37Sheet of torch left against the right-handed hitting Lescano.
- 56:39Off-speed pitch misses away in a full count three and two.
- 56:42And Paul Spindorf continues to throw a lot of pitches.
- 56:48He missed his last start because of the flu.
- 56:51He's having problems with control here tonight.
- 56:53Three-two pitch.
- 56:54High foul ball back and out of play.
- 56:57Porter and George Scott chasing it, but it's well into the seat.
- 57:00They've had an incident at Shea Stadium in New York.
- 57:04Atlanta pitcher Phil Necro was hit in the head with a pitch ball, was forced to leave the game.
- 57:09No action has been taken against Mets pitcher Craig Swan, but Atlanta manager Bobby Cox charged the mound and had to be restrained.
- 57:16He was not ejected from the game.
- 57:18Mets are leading Atlanta 1-0 and Phil Necro hit in the head with a pitch and left that ball game.
- 57:25Three-two pitch to Lescano is low ball four.
- 57:32So Paul Spindorf makes his third walk.
- 57:34He has walked the leadoff man here in the bottom of the third.
- 57:37Now here comes Robin Yandu to single his first time up.
- 57:43You know Pabst's beer is going to leg all by itself because Pabst is rude naturally.
- 57:48You can taste it.
- 57:51George Scott paying a visit to the mound to talk to Paul Spindorf.
- 58:00So the Brewers up for it and up and get their leadoff man aboard here in the third.
- 58:04Now Robin Yandu in the batter's box.
- 58:06Paul Spindorf picks up the sign from Porter.
- 58:09Check Lescano at first.
- 58:10Here's the pitch.
- 58:12High foul ball on the play down the right field side.
- 58:15One strike to count.
- 58:31Spindorf ready again.
- 58:34Now the pitch. Yandu takes inside. The count evens out one-one.
- 58:45Well the White Sox pounding Boston.
- 58:47It's now seven to two in the bottom of the third.
- 58:49Jim Rice at his 13th home run.
- 58:52Well the Red Sox in the third with nobody on but Chicago scores five in a second.
- 58:55There's a little tap back to the mound. Spindorf looks at second but he's only played a first.
- 58:59In time on a close play they get Robin Yandu.
- 59:02The play goes one-three. Lescano moves to second.
- 59:07And now Dick Davis, the designated hitter, the number eight hitter in the lineup.
- 59:11He's grounded his third his first time up.
- 59:13They're in the bottom of the fifth in Detroit, California leading Detroit five to two.
- 59:18Bottom of the fifth in Texas. Yankees one, Texas one.
- 59:23Top of the fifth in Minnesota, the Orioles one. Gwyns nothing.
- 59:32Dick Davis the right-handed batter in. Spindorf set. Here's the pitch.
- 59:36Strike on the inside corner. Davis giving ground.
- 59:39But Spindorf picks up the inside corner. Four-nothing Brewers the bottom of the third.
- 59:44Lescano at second with one out.
- 59:49Here's the pitch. All inside one-on-one.
- 59:56Dennis Leonard throwing in the bullpen again tonight.
- 1:00:00Now Rodriguez is up throwing. Dennis Leonard is pin throwing along with Paul Spindorf.
- 1:00:05When Spindorf is pitching, Leonard gets up and throws in the bullpen.
- 1:00:08He did that when Steve Busby pitched against Boston.
- 1:00:10He's hopeful of getting a start in Oakland but he's not sure right now.
- 1:00:13Two-and-one to count to Davis now. Porter puts down his time. Paul Spindorf is set.
- 1:00:23Here's the stretch and the pitch. High fly ball center field.
- 1:00:27Amos Nunes drifting in. 100 now makes the catch and there are two men gone.
- 1:00:33So Davis out on a fly ball to center.
- 1:00:36And now Clinton will work to the number nine hitter, Charlie Morris.
- 1:00:41He was called out on strikes his first time up.
- 1:00:45His average win of game began 362.
- 1:00:50Over and 15 RBI.
- 1:00:57So Charlie Morris has been swinging a hot bat all year for Milwaukee.
- 1:01:03Lescano deleted second. Spindorf off the stretch.
- 1:01:06First pitch to Charlie Morris on the way.
- 1:01:08High fly ball to deep left field.
- 1:01:11Back goes Willie Wilson to the corner. He leaps and it is time. All right.
- 1:01:15And it's six to nothing, Milwaukee.
- 1:01:31Charlie Morris hits his second home run of the year.
- 1:01:35Second of the ball game. And Whitey Herzog very reluctantly out of the dugout.
- 1:01:40Points to the bullpen and he's going to bring in Eduardo Rodriguez.
- 1:01:44So the last thing on earth that Whitey Herzog wanted tonight, a quick exit for his starting pitcher is happening.
- 1:01:50Paul Spindorf battled but he never could find his stuff.
- 1:01:53And he leaves in the bottom of the third down six to nothing. There are two out and nobody on.
- 1:01:58The man ball monitor will hit Rodriguez from the bullpen with a score against Milwaukee 6 to Royal 7.
- 1:02:05Well, vacation or close to it in a game tonight at Montreal between the Astros and the Montreal Expos.
- 1:02:15Nickro Pitcher was hit. Bill Nickro was hit in the head with a pitch ball.
- 1:02:19Was forced to leave the game on the sixth inning. No action was taken against Mets pitcher Crick Swann.
- 1:02:24Atlanta manager Bobby Cox charged the mound, had to be restrained but was not ejected.
- 1:02:30Out of action, not much hitting but a little extracurricular activity out there at the Expos Stadium.
- 1:02:36It's one to one after five innings play.
- 1:02:39Latest National League figures show the first of the Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates hold all the top spots in the All-Star voting.
- 1:02:47Three of the leading infield both getters are Phillies Pete Rose at first, Larry Bowe at chart top and Mike Schmidt at third.
- 1:02:53Johnny Bench of the Reds has moved into the number one position among catchers.
- 1:02:5611,000 votes ahead of Ted Simmons at the Cardinals.
- 1:02:59Bench has started every All-Star game since Van Baliding returned in 1970.
- 1:03:04Davey Lopes at the Los Angeles Dodgers has a 30,000 vote lead over Cincinnati's Joe Morgan at second base.
- 1:03:12The three leading vote getters in the outfield are Philadelphia's Greg Lozinski, Pittsburgh's Dave Parker and Cincinnati's George Foster.
- 1:03:21Mark Rial in Houston are in first place in the Eastern and Western divisions of the league but neither has a player higher than fifth in the voting.
- 1:03:31Eduardo Rodriguez out of the bullpen. It is six to nothing Milwaukee.
- 1:03:37We're just in the bottom of the third and trying to give you an idea why.
- 1:03:41Why the Erzogs fill the left in to give an idea why.
- 1:03:44How well kind of shaped the Royal Fishing Staff is in.
- 1:03:47Here comes Ed Rodriguez. And just two nights ago, Eduardo Rodriguez was five and a third innings against the Red Sox.
- 1:03:54The two days before that he had pitched two and two-thirds innings against the Yankees and just two days before that he had gone three and a third.
- 1:04:02So why the Erzogs, very reluctant to use him earlier tonight, is forced to do exactly that.
- 1:04:13And I guess you'd have to say that the Royal bullpen is pretty well-candored right now and Paul Fudorf just couldn't give him very much here this evening.
- 1:04:19He admits his last start with the flu and it's pretty obvious from the onset that he did not have his stuff tonight.
- 1:04:26The Brewers got two in for seven hits, six runs, a three-run homer by Bando, a two-run homer by Charlie Moore.
- 1:04:33And the Royals are buried in the third inning here and they're going to have to crawl out of the D.C. poll if they're going to do any good here tonight.
- 1:04:40And then you really have to wonder where the answer is. It's obviously going to be from the starting pitchers getting a couple of good turns and giving the bullpen some rest.
- 1:04:49And pitchers being like hitters go into slumps, but you have to hope they get it turned around pretty soon, huh?
- 1:04:55There's very little that Whitey can do. There's very little that we can say. It's just a dumb trice to battle your way out of it.
- 1:05:02There are no answers. You just have to go out there and throw strikes so if your defense can get the job done for you.
- 1:05:07If you can't, then you don't win. It's just that simple.
- 1:05:10There is another item that hasn't been talked about very much, the Bears.
- 1:05:14The Royals defense is next to last in the American League.
- 1:05:17But you also have to stop and think that George Redfield injured.
- 1:05:20Frank White was out for a number of games. Freddie Potek missed a lot of ball games.
- 1:05:23Al Cowan missed a lot of ball games.
- 1:05:25So there was not really the pure Royals defense out there and that statistic could be a little bit misleading.
- 1:05:31At any rate, Ed Rodriguez in a ball game now and he may be a bit weary.
- 1:05:37Again, just two days ago he went five in a third inning.
- 1:05:41And you have to wonder how much he can give the Royals here tonight.
- 1:05:45Monitor steps in. He has single-slice and scored twice.
- 1:05:48Golden two bases. Rodriguez to Monitor.
- 1:05:50Goes a right on by to reporter ball one.
- 1:05:53Eduardo, a former Brewer, working against his old teammate to pitch to ball Monitor.
- 1:06:08Ball misses to and oh.
- 1:06:14Pitch to nothing, Milwaukee, and we're just in the bottom of the third.
- 1:06:17Here's the two-oh delivering. Ball three-oh. Rodriguez misses with his first three-pitch.
- 1:06:26Now to reporter walking them out. He wants to talk to Eduardo Rodriguez.
- 1:06:36Whitey Herzog still with Fletcher.
- 1:06:38Marches about tomorrow with still lifting either Marty Patton or Steve Busby against Jim Clayton.
- 1:06:42But as you know, Paul the groin muscle is in that tremendous outing against the Red Sox.
- 1:06:47Three-oh pitch to Monitor here.
- 1:06:49Right call to three-and-one.
- 1:06:58Here's the pitch. Mother fouls one back out of play. Full count three-and-two.
- 1:07:03Goodness, this game's been going for an hour and fifteen minutes and we're only in the bottom of the third.
- 1:07:11How much offense the Brewers have had.
- 1:07:20Three-two pitch foul back again.
- 1:07:22Now the ticker is in Atlanta's direction. Atlanta manager Bobby Cox was ejected from the ball game
- 1:07:28because of his confrontation with Fletcher's Craig Swan after one hit. Phil Negril in the head with a pitch.
- 1:07:36Now Jeff Brewers is homer for the Braves and the seventh with Bill Bodie on and they're tied one-one.
- 1:07:40Pitch to Monitor again. A slow rollover up long third. George Brett charging.
- 1:07:44Rolls it out of his left leg. Can't get it. Monitor's safe.
- 1:07:50Face-hit for Paul Monitor as a slow bouncer up third. George may not have been able to get him anyway,
- 1:07:55but he had trouble getting the ball out of his glove and it cost him whatever chance he might have had.
- 1:08:02Johnny Vance is homer for the Reds in the fifth inning with a man on his fifth home run of the year.
- 1:08:06Cincinnati six, Philadelphia three now in the fifth.
- 1:08:09James Summers is homer for Detroit in the fifth with Bill Bodie on his third.
- 1:08:13The Tigers have gone in front of the Angels six to five in Detroit.
- 1:08:28Rodriguez running. First pitch in to Cecil Cooper misses Paul White. Eight hits now for Milwaukee.
- 1:08:46Eduardo Rodriguez off his stretch to pitch. Strike on the outside corner. One ball, one strike.
- 1:09:00Cooper is single. He's down on a five-ball to right. A 295 hitter with 11 home runs.
- 1:09:07So the first runner back. Milwaukee with a lot of bombers on his ball club.
- 1:09:16They're tied with the Boston Reds off for the league leadership in home runs.
- 1:09:19Pitch outside. Misses two and one. The Brewers have hit 67 home runs this year.
- 1:09:27The Loyals by contrast, 41.
- 1:09:33Mom and her edging away at first very safely. The pitch swung and missed.
- 1:09:37Two balls, two strikes to Cecil Cooper.
- 1:09:48Well, the early indications that the Loyals ran for a long night here at County Stadium.
- 1:09:53Still a long, long way to go. They face the toughie and Mike Caldwell.
- 1:09:58Pitch grounded foul, pass first. But remember back just a few short days ago when Tommy John and the Yankees had the Loyals down five to nothing in the middle of a ball game.
- 1:10:09The Loyals came back and won that one.
- 1:10:17Two balls, two strikes. Cooper waiting. Rodriguez fits. Shots fouled again. The count remains 2-2.
- 1:10:36Zero Porter through the signs and Rodriguez at the belt to pitch again. Fouled back out of play again.
- 1:10:53So now Cooper and Rodriguez in quite a battle here. Still two balls, two strikes.
- 1:10:59Again, Muller at first with two outs. Here's the pitch. Fouled it off again.
- 1:11:07So Cooper won't give, neither will Ed Rodriguez.
- 1:11:14Phil Honner, the plate umpire, chased that ball halfway to the Loyals dugout and gave it back to Rodriguez.
- 1:11:25Now Ed's set to work again. Rodriguez at the belt. Again the 2-2 pitch. Again it's fouled back.
- 1:11:37That ball came rolling up the screen and hit somewhere under our booth.
- 1:11:43Something's going to have to give pretty soon.
- 1:11:50Now Cooper steps out of it. He might be getting arm-wary. He's had a lot of swings up there this time.
- 1:12:05Now the pitch. There's a drive at deep center field back to his Amazonas with room.
- 1:12:11He's there, he's got it, and the inning is over. But the Brewers' short few more runs.
- 1:12:16Two hits, they left the match. And after three, the Milwaukee six, the Royals coming.
- 1:12:22Game over in the American League at Toronto. Tom Underwood hurled a five-hitter to snap a personal 15-game losing streak.
- 1:12:28Enrico Cardi doubled up one run and scored two others, the sparks at Toronto Blue Jays, to a 6-0 victory over the Oakland A's.
- 1:12:36Underwood now 1-9, struck out one, walked one, while not allowing an Oakland runner past second base.
- 1:12:42The left-hander's last victory came on August 8, 1978, against the Baltimore Orioles.
- 1:12:49Atlanta knuckleballer Phil Negros was removed from Friday night's game against the New York Mets after being hit in the head by Craig Swann fastball.
- 1:12:57The incident precipitated a bench and bullpen clearing altercation between home plate and the pitcher's mound when Atlanta manager Bobby Cox had words with Swann.
- 1:13:07Negros went to the ground after the pitch, but seconds later was up and walking around.
- 1:13:12Pitcher Buddy Solomon was inserted as a pinch runner after a 10-minute delay until Maloflan took over on the mound for Negros in the sixth.
- 1:13:21The pitch may have been in retaliation of a Negros brushback of Swann in the fifth when the New York pitcher squared the punt with one out and runners at first and second.
- 1:13:31Negros' first pitch was a high fastball to hit Swann's bat as the Mets pitcher tried to avoid being hit by the pitch.
- 1:13:38And Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Roy Howell is in place on the 15-day disabled list.
- 1:13:43He cut his right-hand face running the other night when he tried to break up a double play in a game against the California Angels.
- 1:13:51To the fourth we go, Milwaukee 6, the Royal Tuckings.
- 1:13:55It'll be Amos Oduz, Al Cowans, and George Scott for the Royals.
- 1:14:01Amos has been struggling at the plate lately. He has but seven hits in his last 43 at bat.
- 1:14:06His average just dipped under 300. He was 298 when the game began.
- 1:14:11Got it after the pitcher his first time up tonight. He hit Mike Caldwell extremely well last year.
- 1:14:16Oduz last season, 5 for 9 with a home run against Mike Caldwell.
- 1:14:20First pitch, Amos. That's a pretty good cut, Amos. One strike to count.
- 1:14:29Oduz knocks some dirt out of his spikes.
- 1:14:37Caldwell looks to Moore for a sign. The left-hander whining and here comes the pitch.
- 1:14:41Strike called, 0-2 to Oduz.
- 1:14:44Well, one of the problems what he has right now is they don't hand out magic wands anymore.
- 1:14:49If so, he could just wave the magic wand and all the pitching woes and all the other woes would be cured.
- 1:14:56Injured players would be well. It just doesn't work like that.
- 1:15:01Pitch outside, 1-2.
- 1:15:05So all they can do is hope that his pitchers can pitch their way out of it.
- 1:15:09His hitters can produce, the defense plays, and Royals get it going again.
- 1:15:15Ground ball headed for left. Robin Yacht backhand, keeping the hole. Long throw. Oduz beat it. He's safe.
- 1:15:22A base hit for Amos Oduz to start the Royals half of the fourth.
- 1:15:27The one thing you have to look at, two things, really.
- 1:15:30Number one, Royals are very much in a race. There's only four games left.
- 1:15:34Number two, after tonight there are 99 games left in this season.
- 1:15:41The one thing they cannot do is hit the panic button.
- 1:15:47This is the same pitching staff that pitched the Royals to three divisional titles in a row.
- 1:15:52Basically the same ball club that won them.
- 1:15:55So it was a foolish to panic.
- 1:15:59Rick Dow Cowans now. All low.
- 1:16:04About all they can do is be patient with themselves, ask their fans to be patient.
- 1:16:08Who knows, maybe when the Royals come off this road trip, maybe things will have begun to turn around.
- 1:16:13Maybe not. The time will tell.
- 1:16:19Stretched by Caldwell to pitch. High fly ball, shallow right.
- 1:16:23Out goes Bonner, the second baseman calling for it.
- 1:16:25Back pedaling to make the catch.
- 1:16:29Cowans pops the second.
- 1:16:32Otis holds his first. And here now George Scott who drove Gorman Thomas to the wall in center field his first time up.
- 1:16:39The Texas Rangers have dropped a big inning on the Yankees.
- 1:16:44Texas scores eight times in the fifth.
- 1:16:49And the Rangers are now leading the Yankees nine to one after five.
- 1:16:55It should be noted that George Steinbrenner joined the Yankees in Minnesota.
- 1:16:59He is making that trip to Texas with the ball club.
- 1:17:02They have not been doing it all well of late.
- 1:17:05First the pitch to Scott.
- 1:17:07Lined in the right field, it's going to drop for a base hit.
- 1:17:10Otis holds his second and George Scott is the ball with his first hit in the Royal Uniform.
- 1:17:15So the boomer's in a play tonight, he's hit it hard two times.
- 1:17:19But noteworthy that George Steinbrenner is with the Yankees in Texas.
- 1:17:24You have to wonder about the future.
- 1:17:31And specifically the future of Bob Lemon to be quite frank about it as the manager of New York.
- 1:17:35How long has it been since George had his name in the newspaper?
- 1:17:38It's been a while so something might get there.
- 1:17:44Porter now to hit her.
- 1:17:46The Royals down six to nothing.
- 1:17:51If somebody could yank one out of here they'd be back in the ball game.
- 1:17:58Darrell ground it into a fourth out his first time up.
- 1:18:00Two-ninet-six with seven home runs.
- 1:18:02The numbers for Darrell Porter, the pitch.
- 1:18:04Ground ball, shot foul, pass first.
- 1:18:06One strike to Porter.
- 1:18:08The Royals now with four hits.
- 1:18:16John Lawson in the on-deck circle will be next barring to double play.
- 1:18:26Probably one thing the Royals were very glad to see right there was George Scott going the other way.
- 1:18:32There are those who will tell you that the stroke he was using because of Fenway was what was keeping his average down.
- 1:18:38So conscious of that wall in Fenway with Scott that he was trying to pull the ball consistently.
- 1:18:43That time he went the other way and hit a Wickenbein drive.
- 1:18:46Ball on the strike now to Porter.
- 1:18:47Call well with a sign from Charlie Moore.
- 1:18:52Left hander is ready.
- 1:18:53Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:18:54Breaking ball inside, two-and-one.
- 1:18:59Douglas Sinsley is homing for Baltimore in the fifth with nobody on his fifth.
- 1:19:02The Orioles waiting Minnesota to do nothing.
- 1:19:09Toronto's sixth, Oakland nothing after eight.
- 1:19:14Cleveland continues to wail on Seattle.
- 1:19:17Eleven to two in the bottom of the sixth in Cleveland.
- 1:19:19The Indians lead the Mariners.
- 1:19:26Now to stretch the two-one pitch to Darryl Porter.
- 1:19:29Bouncer foul pass bird.
- 1:19:33What's past ten seconds here?
- 1:19:35Station identification on the Royals baseball network.
- 1:19:51We're back to count two-two on Darryl Porter.
- 1:19:54Otis at second, Scott at first with one out.
- 1:19:57We're in the top of the fourth, Milwaukee leading six to nothing.
- 1:20:02Mike Callwell fidgeting around on the mound.
- 1:20:09Now getting set.
- 1:20:12Here's the stretch, the two-two pitch on the way.
- 1:20:15Porter swings and lines one up the middle, base in center field.
- 1:20:18Otis around third, headed for home.
- 1:20:19Scott stops at second.
- 1:20:20Porter holds at first with a single.
- 1:20:22And Darryl is giving in his 49th run of the year.
- 1:20:25And the Royals are on the scoreboard here at County Stadium.
- 1:20:27It's now six to one, Milwaukee.
- 1:20:31And John Wampen now headed for the plate.
- 1:20:37Wampen in now, Callwell breaking contact.
- 1:20:59Three hits in the inning, the Royals now have five hits in the ballgame.
- 1:21:02Callwell again breaks contact.
- 1:21:09Here's the pitch.
- 1:21:11Ball outside, ball one.
- 1:21:13Frank White next.
- 1:21:16If Wampen can get a base in here, he could set up what could be a pretty beginning for the Royals.
- 1:21:22Duke set.
- 1:21:23Callwell ready, here's the pitch.
- 1:21:25Swung and fouled off, and the count evens out a ball and a strike.
- 1:21:48Wampen waiting while Callwell reads signs.
- 1:21:50Here's the pitch.
- 1:21:51Ball inside and low, two and one.
- 1:21:58The Royals trying to get their offense cranked up here.
- 1:22:00Down by five runs at the moment.
- 1:22:05Charlie Moore puts down a sign.
- 1:22:08Left hander Mike Callwell sets a 2-1 pitch.
- 1:22:11Wampen swings at the ground ball to second, might be two.
- 1:22:13Second base one, back to first, double.
- 1:22:15Wild throw, here comes Shaka score, Wampen headed for second base to throw in into Milwaukee dugout.
- 1:22:23And it's now a six to two ballgame.
- 1:22:25I said ground ball to second, I meant ground ball to third.
- 1:22:27Sal Bando came up with it, made the throw to second, the Mothers relay went on into the Milwaukee dugout.
- 1:22:36So the play goes five-four.
- 1:22:40And error four, Wampen at second base now.
- 1:22:42Another run home, it's now a six to two ballgame, and here's Frank White.
- 1:22:49Scott scores, zero border out on the fourth out.
- 1:22:54John Watson does not get an RBI on the play.
- 1:22:58And now here's Frank.
- 1:23:01White grounded to third his first time up, and if he hit here it would cut the Brewer lead in half.
- 1:23:05Two runs home in the inning, the pitch.
- 1:23:08Line down the left field, line, but it's hooking and foul.
- 1:23:11Well White hit it hard, but foul.
- 1:23:16That was with extra bases.
- 1:23:19And all of a sudden the Royal Bats starting to make some noise.
- 1:23:25Now he gets a board, Fred Pockek will hit the inning.
- 1:23:47White waiting, Caldwell reading the signs again.
- 1:23:51Now the stretch, here's the pitch.
- 1:23:53Ground ball to second base.
- 1:23:55Bobbiter has it, flips to first and the inning's over.
- 1:23:58So White out second to first within the inning.
- 1:24:00Royal score two, three hits, an error, and a man left.
- 1:24:05And we go now to the bottom of the fourth, Milwaukee sixth, and the Royal two.
- 1:24:10We have a correction now on the ticker on that game that we mentioned a while ago.
- 1:24:14And the triple A Rochester and Toledo, they score 56 to 48 after seven, the Red Wings.
- 1:24:21And the final score, Toledo defeated Rochester by a score of six to four.
- 1:24:28Late finishing Larry Nelson equaled the best round of the tournament today with a three under par 68
- 1:24:33to share the second round lead with Tom Perger at the U.S. Open Golf Championship.
- 1:24:37But Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus played themselves out of contention.
- 1:24:41Nelson moved into the lead by himself with a birdie in the 16th hole,
- 1:24:45but he bogeyed number 17 to fall back into a tie with Perger at three under par 139.
- 1:24:51Perger started early and shot a fine 69.
- 1:24:54Though he claimed he didn't deserve his position,
- 1:24:56his name stood alone on the leaderboard for some six hours before Nelson caught him.
- 1:25:00Former Open champ Hale Irwin matched Nelson's round at 68 to move into third place at 142,
- 1:25:06making himself the only other player in the field of 153 to match par for 36 holes.
- 1:25:12Bill Rogers is one more stroke back at 143 following a 72.
- 1:25:17Watson opened his round with a triple bogey and never did recover.
- 1:25:21He added a double bogey and five bogeys to wind up with a six over par 77 and a two round score of 152.
- 1:25:27Nicklaus didn't fare any better with four bogeys and a double bogey on his first seven holes.
- 1:25:32The Golden Bear settled for 77. That left him at 151.
- 1:25:37The final round of the fourth county stadium Milwaukee. The Brewers lead the Royals 6-2.
- 1:25:42It'll be Sal Bando, Gorman Thomas, and Ben Ogilvie.
- 1:25:45The heart of the order is the number three, four, and five hitters.
- 1:25:48Four Milwaukee. Ed Rodriguez back to the mound.
- 1:25:55Milwaukee six runs, eight hits. The Royals two runs on five hits.
- 1:25:59Rodriguez to Bando, this is high, ball one.
- 1:26:03Bando opened and his third gave up a single to Paul Molliter, then got Cecil Cooper on a fly ball to end the inning.
- 1:26:08And he's back now for round four.
- 1:26:10The line, the pitch to Sal Bando on the way. Swung and missed. County wins out one-one.
- 1:26:15Bando hit a three-run homer in the first and then Watson a second.
- 1:26:22He has a big blow in the ball game so far. Charlie Mora, two-run homer for Milwaukee.
- 1:26:26From Rodriguez, now two balls and a strike.
- 1:26:40Here's the two-one pitch. Strike on the inside corner. The county wins out two-two.
- 1:26:51Rodriguez trying to retire the leadoff man here in the bottom of the fourth. The pitch.
- 1:26:56Shifts missed outside of ball count three and two. Bando had a notion but checked his swing.
- 1:27:04Sal's average winner night began, two-twenty-eight.
- 1:27:08Ground ball hit it for left, eight hits.
- 1:27:12Sal Bando aboard with a single.
- 1:27:14The Brewer hit for eight continues. Their ninth base hit tonight.
- 1:27:22Now in three of the four things we played, the Brewers have had their leadoff man aboard and they've been catching him.
- 1:27:27Here's Torm and Thomas. He's grounded out in single driven inner run.
- 1:27:33Thomas, the center fielder hitting in the number four spot in the lineup tonight.
- 1:28:33A strike in outside six-six after six-hitting. Strike on the outside corner. One strike to Gorman Thomas.
- 1:28:46Ed Rodriguez has been used a lot lately. Fishing was very little there.
- 1:28:51He's trying to hold things together for the Royals.
- 1:28:54Swing and a miss by Thomas, two strikes to count.
- 1:29:00He would be very doubtful at this point that Ed Rodriguez could finish the ballgame.
- 1:29:07Having gone five and a third just two days ago.
- 1:29:13His stance right now, just keep the Royals in the middle part of the ballgame. See what the offense can produce.
- 1:29:18The pitch by Rodriguez. High cowering fly to left. Willie Wilson coming in, still moving in under it. Now makes the catch and there's one away.
- 1:29:30Thomas out on the fly ball to the left. Bando holds it first. He's there with one out of it.
- 1:29:35Now Ben Ogilvy who's been out on the fly ball deep to center and grounded his second.
- 1:29:41Thomas here tonight. Robert and Leanne Stavonic from Atchison, Canada who are on a bicycling trip to Canada.
- 1:29:51Want to say hello to their friends back in Atchison. They have yet to figure out if they're on a bicycle trip to Canada.
- 1:29:56How they have to begin Milwaukee, Wisconsin tonight.
- 1:30:01Unless they have moved Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the heartland of Canada somehow. Maybe they're on their way up there.
- 1:30:09Faisal Cooper takes one and misses. Ball one.
- 1:30:23The pitch again to Faisal Cooper misses outside.
- 1:30:31Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:30:36The final, Serrano's sixth, Oakland nothing.
- 1:30:39Tom Underwood got his first run of the year. He broke the losing streak. He's now one to nine. Hamilton the loser, two and one.
- 1:30:46Bobby Bader got the game-winning RBI.
- 1:30:49Dan Landrow is over for the twins in the sixth with nobody on his sixth home run of the year.
- 1:30:54It's Baltimore two, Minnesota one now.
- 1:30:58Ball four to Faisal Cooper.
- 1:31:01A letter from Ogilvie. Ogilvie draws the base on balls. The first ball is given by Rod Rekers.
- 1:31:07So now runners at first and second just one out.
- 1:31:10The Brewers who have scored in every inning threaten to score again.
- 1:31:16They got three on Sal Bando's home run in the first. They scored one in the second.
- 1:31:20Then two on Charlie Morse's home run in the third.
- 1:31:23And now runners at first and second just one out and here's Faisal Oskano who has lost quite tonight.
- 1:31:31Oskano with three-twenty hitters.
- 1:31:34Rod Rekers ready to pitch.
- 1:31:37Ball one.
- 1:31:39And Ed Rod Rekers having trouble locating home plate now.
- 1:31:49Rod Rekers pitch. Right call and it's out evens out one-one.
- 1:32:03Pitch Oskano out of the batter's box a moment, steps back in.
- 1:32:07Oskano with a sign to pitch. Swing and a miss. Oskano after the breaking ball at one and two.
- 1:32:21Rod Rekers trying to keep the Royals afloat here. They're down six-two in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:32:25And the Brewers threatening again here.
- 1:32:28Here's the one-two pitch.
- 1:32:30Line in the right field. It's going to fall for a base hit.
- 1:32:33Down third is going to score. Al Callen bobbles the ball and now overleaves a third base.
- 1:32:38Oskano holds it first and it's seven to two in the long run.
- 1:32:46Oskano a little ruber to the right.
- 1:32:51He drives in his thirty-ninth run of the year. No air is charged out. Callen's going to play.
- 1:32:57Cooper was headed for third so now runners at first and third.
- 1:33:00And the Brewers keep alive that string of having scored in every inning.
- 1:33:04Now Robin Yalow is singled and grounded after the pitcher.
- 1:33:11This game is an hour and forty minutes old and we are only in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:33:35It is seven to two Brewers. They have ten hits. The Royals have five.
- 1:33:39Still just one half in the bottom of the fourth. The pitch.
- 1:33:42This is inside. Ball one.
- 1:33:48Steven Goehring now throwing in the Royal Ball pen.
- 1:33:56Oder puts down a sign.
- 1:33:59Here's the pitch.
- 1:34:01Strike on the inside corner. The count evens out one-one.
- 1:34:09Nick Davis in the on deck circle.
- 1:34:16Here's the one-one pitch. Inside gets away from Porter. The runners can't advance.
- 1:34:22Now two balls and a strike.
- 1:34:38Rodriguez is understandable.
- 1:34:42Now beginning to struggle.
- 1:34:45Now the two-one pitch. Ball inside. Three and one.
- 1:34:54Eduardo having problems with his control.
- 1:34:59Two singles and a walk can produce one run.
- 1:35:06Now three balls and a strike for Robin Yalow. The danger is thinner. The pitch.
- 1:35:11Long and missed. Full count three and two.
- 1:35:17And we'll see if the Brewers have a mind to send Sisco Vascano.
- 1:35:21Also be a third Vascano at first with one out.
- 1:35:25Here's the three-two pitch. The runner is going. It's ball four inside. The bases will notice.
- 1:35:32Now Galen Sisco headed for the mound to talk to his pitcher.
- 1:35:46Well you talk about a fellow that's not enjoying life at all these days.
- 1:35:51Along with Whitey Herzog, the left-hander, and the left-hander, Galen Sisco is suffering as much as anyone.
- 1:36:00He's like a father to the Royal Fishing staff.
- 1:36:04Well when they hurt, he hurts. And right now they're hurting, so he's hurting too.
- 1:36:08Bases loaded, one out.
- 1:36:10Nick Davis, the header, he's grounded out. He's been out on a fly ball.
- 1:36:15Brewers in front, seven and two.
- 1:36:26They were in front six and nothing. The Royals got two of them back, but now one more is short. Here's the pitch.
- 1:36:31Foul on a play, one strike.
- 1:36:36The Royals have hit Nick Davis extremely well. He's one for fourteen against Royal Fishing this year.
- 1:36:50One ball, one strike to Nick Davis now as Rodriguez misses.
- 1:37:02Rodriguez pitch, high fly ball, deep left field, back goes Woolley, grand slam, long run.
- 1:37:11It is 11-0-1.
- 1:37:41That's Galen Moore in Rodriguez. This is the first pitch, ball one.
- 1:37:57Full run number five for Dick Davis.
- 1:38:00Boy, are you talking about getting whacked.
- 1:38:02Royal Fishing has been doing exactly that the last few ball games.
- 1:38:06Strike called and it's one and one.
- 1:38:10The Royals came up three home runs, one of them a grand slam.
- 1:38:13The same thing here tonight.
- 1:38:16The pitch, ground ball up the middle.
- 1:38:19Knocked down by Frank White. Plotek picked it up, throws and they got him.
- 1:38:25Oh, a tremendous play by the middle defense of the Royals.
- 1:38:29Frank White got a glove on the ball, de-fluttered it toward the shortstop Fred Plotek.
- 1:38:33Plotek was moving to second, toward second.
- 1:38:36And he came up with it and throws out Tony Moore.
- 1:38:41It'll be four and six three the way the play is scored.
- 1:38:48So now two men out.
- 1:38:51And here's Paul Modu, who is already three for three in this game.
- 1:38:55We're only in the fourth inning.
- 1:38:57Pitch to him, lined right field. Out goes Frank White, Modu is four for four.
- 1:39:09A dozen hits now for Milwaukee. They have a two run homer, a three run homer, a grand slam home run.
- 1:39:20They're still batting in the fourth and they already have 11 runs on 12 hits.
- 1:39:31The Brewers have had 17 base runners in four innings.
- 1:39:39Good foul back.
- 1:39:54Beasel, Cooper, the hitter, the pitch.
- 1:39:58Ball high, one and one. Modu is four for four, Cooper tonight one for three.
- 1:40:09Eleven to two, Milwaukee in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:40:12Here's the pitch.
- 1:40:15Ball outside, two and one.
- 1:40:31Rodriguez-Buddy delivers the can and gets a strike on the outside corner. The count evens out to two.
- 1:40:39Cleveland beats Seattle 13 to three tonight.
- 1:40:43The Mets have gone in front of Atlanta two to one. Atlanta batting the top of the ninth in New York.
- 1:40:50Swing and a foul tipped held by Porter and the inning is over as Cooper strikes out.
- 1:40:55But the Brewers get five runs.
- 1:40:58There were four hits, a man left. After the fourth, Milwaukee 11 to Royals two.
- 1:41:08Texas scoreboard, lots of games going. And the games on the West Coast about to start.
- 1:41:14One is already underway. That's Chicago and San Diego, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, and St. Louis and San Francisco up on the set.
- 1:41:21Nationally, games underway after eight. Houston won, Montreal won, Atlanta and New York after eight.
- 1:41:27The Mets lead the Braves two to one. Cincinnati after, Cincinnati after Philadelphia after seven.
- 1:41:32Six facilities, three. Bench home run is fifth of the year for the Reds and the Fives with one on.
- 1:41:38American League scoreboard, final. Toronto beat Oakland six nothing. We mentioned that a while ago.
- 1:41:44Six twelve zero for the Blue Jays, oh five two for the A's. Underwood the winner, his first win of the year.
- 1:41:49He's one to nine. Hamilton the loser two and one attendance at Toronto, Canada. 13,124.
- 1:41:56Cleveland is just beating Seattle 13 to three. Indians line score 13, 19, one. Mariners three, eight and two.
- 1:42:02Jones a home run for Seattle in the fourth, none on his fourteenth of the year.
- 1:42:06California, Detroit after six and a half. The Angels have a score to run the top of the seventh.
- 1:42:10They lead Sparky Anderson Tigers seven to six. Loss of homers in the game.
- 1:42:14Gritch has two for the Angels, his fourteenth and fifteenth of the year.
- 1:42:18Thompson Tigers fifth, one on his sixth of the year. Summer Detroit fifth, nobody on his third.
- 1:42:23And Lansford just hit one for California in the seventh, nobody on his seventh of the year.
- 1:42:27Five and a half innings to play, Chicago seven, Boston two. After six, Baltimore leads Minnesota two to one.
- 1:42:33And after six and a half, Texas nine, New York one. Eight runs for the Rangers against the Yankees.
- 1:42:39Home bet, good bye Louis Tion.
- 1:42:41We have played four at County Stadium, Milwaukee eleven, the Royals two. Buddy Potec will beat it off.
- 1:42:46And Peeva Tock has hit it for the Royals both end and we may see something here before this night's over that we haven't seen before.
- 1:42:52Tell you about the ball game and perhaps a bit more about that who's in it.
- 1:42:56Hi Fred. Buddy Potec leading off. Fred has a single in the game. He's one out of one.
- 1:43:02Peeva Tock, unbeknownst to most, has one of, and I'm serious about this, one of the very fine knuckleballs I have ever seen a baseball player throw on the sideline.
- 1:43:15Mike Caldwell's pitch to Potec is inside bowl one.
- 1:43:19A lot of players more or less play around on the sideline.
- 1:43:24You know all, all everyday players want to be pitchers.
- 1:43:28Outside all pitchers want to be everyday players. Just like all actors and singers want to be ball players. All ball players would like to be singers and actors.
- 1:43:37Well Peeva Tock is going to the bullpen and if need be I think we'll see him pitch.
- 1:43:43And he might show us some knuckleball because I've seen Bruce Dowd-Canton throw on the side.
- 1:43:48I've stood alongside one. Wilbur Wood watched his knuckleball.
- 1:43:53And Pete, if he could get it in the strike zone, it would be the equal to Bruce Dowd-Canton.
- 1:43:58Fly ball right field. Potec retired, one away.
- 1:44:02Well Freddy went on it too. Here's Willie Wilson. Willie fly to left in the first, fly to center in the third. 0 for 2.
- 1:44:09If he went out and said, how many is not throwing right now, there would be one little hit. He would have to be designated to pitch.
- 1:44:15And he probably has been. I don't know that he hasn't been but there is that one little technicality.
- 1:44:20Well just this year Wayne Nordagen has pitched for the Chicago White Sox and they got into a pinch.
- 1:44:27Willie takes the strike from Mike Caldwell, 0 and 1.
- 1:44:31Remember last year when Baltimore manager Earl Weaver used catcher Elrod Hendricks.
- 1:44:38There's a swing and a miss. He used him in Toronto.
- 1:44:45No balls, two strikes on Willie Wilson. Final score from Shays Stadium, New York.
- 1:44:51The New Yorker match 2, the Atlanta Braves won. A rather stormy game which saw manager Bobby Cox eject a bouncing ball.
- 1:44:58Molacher to his left, can't get it. Wilson singles into right with one out.
- 1:45:03And the batter, George Brady, 11 to 2 Milwaukee.
- 1:45:08Was it last year that Jeff Newman of the A's pitched against the Royals?
- 1:45:13Yes, last year Newman, a catcher did.
- 1:45:17Elrod Hendricks we mentioned did some pitching. He was a catcher.
- 1:45:22Nordagen who pitched, a catcher.
- 1:45:26The piece of southpaw in the first basement outfielder.
- 1:45:30I don't think we're likely to see Darryl Porter throwing the old slab tonight.
- 1:45:34Well, I doubt it. Mike Caldwell delivers and George a pretty good catch and he fouled it back to the base of the screen, 0 and 1.
- 1:45:45We talk about the ball players, the everyday players, the position players, wanting to pitch and every once in a while fooling around in the mound.
- 1:45:52If you're out at the ballpark early some night, take a look at George Brad. He'll do imitations of pitchers.
- 1:45:58I think he did the best Joe Horner I've ever seen and only Joe Horner, he did better than Joe Horner.
- 1:46:05As a matter of fact, that funny little motion that Joe used to have.
- 1:46:08We might even see George out there but I doubt it.
- 1:46:11Line shot, base hit center field. Berman Thomas plays it and went up.
- 1:46:16So back to back singles by Wilson and Brett.
- 1:46:20And here's Amos Oden.
- 1:46:22And I say we're not likely to see Brett out there in the mound. It's the simple fact that the batter is only 60 feet, 6 inches away from the pitcher.
- 1:46:31And George is much more valuable to third base and certainly more valuable in the batter's box.
- 1:46:37That base hit by George is 87th hit of the year.
- 1:46:43In the Atlanta Mets game, New York to win a two runs eight hit, Atlanta to lose one run just two hits.
- 1:46:53Two on one out, Amos Oden is the plate, Mike Caldwell's pitch is Nick Powell, the mcdonnell in one.
- 1:46:59Let me check one thing. I said he had to be designated.
- 1:47:03Team Vogelar came in and told me that and I told him I'd never heard of it. Now he came back and said he's not sure that he has to be.
- 1:47:12I don't know why you would have to be.
- 1:47:16Now the signal given, here's the stretch by Mike Caldwell.
- 1:47:20Pitch to Otis is drilled into left field for a base hit. Willie Wilson makes the turn at third and he'll score. Brett stops at second.
- 1:47:28That makes it 11 to 3 Milwaukee. Otis has his 35th RBI, his second hit of the ballgame.
- 1:47:35On the batter is Al Collins. Al, single in the second, pops the second in the fourth.
- 1:47:48A number of years ago it wasn't uncommon to have a manager have his pitcher play first base or third base for a hitter.
- 1:47:59And perhaps have another man come in to pitch and then take the man off first base and put him back on the mound.
- 1:48:09I have never seen that done in the big leagues. It has been done in the big leagues.
- 1:48:14Collins takes a little bit high, one ball and no strikes.
- 1:48:2311 to 3 Milwaukee, runners at first and second. Mike Caldwell then quests for his seventh win.
- 1:48:30His biggest problem right now is just paying attention. He leads 11 to 3, the Brewers have a dozen hits.
- 1:48:37One ball, one strike and Collins. Al has hit safely in six straight games.
- 1:48:45The pitch is made and Al is swinging the miss, one and two. The Brewers, three in the first, one in the second, two in the third and five in the fourth.
- 1:48:56The Royals, two in the fourth, one in the fifth. Brett at second, Otis at first, one out.
- 1:49:05Caldwell off the stretch, the one, two pitch to Al. Collins is inside, two balls and two strikes.
- 1:49:23Make no given, here's the pitch to Al. High five, all left center field.
- 1:49:28Van Ozel, the left fielder there to make the catch. That's two out and here is George Scott.
- 1:49:36High to deep center in the second, single to the score in the fourth.
- 1:49:46Al Mopanela, over for the Yankees in the eighth inning with the man on his seventh. The Texas way out in front of New York, nine to three. The Yankees playing down in Arlington.
- 1:49:58Cincinnati leading the Phillies by the score of six to three. They're in the ninth inning in Philadelphia.
- 1:50:09The bouncing ball to the hole is short backhanded by Yad to second base. Out! And the third is called out at second base by the Umpire, Ken Kiser.
- 1:50:18And Otis arguing, he thought that he'd beaten the thrall from Yad who made a tremendous play in the hole and short.
- 1:50:24Whitey Herzog is going out.
- 1:50:29So the inning is over, the Royals on three hits gonna run.
- 1:50:34We go to the bottom of the fifth, Milwaukee 11 and the Royals three.
- 1:50:39This is the tale of the game just over at Montreal.
- 1:50:42Hart Howell, ninth inning double drove home the winning run.
- 1:50:45And the John Quinn Adjidar hurled a five hitter as the Houston Astros scored a two to one victory over the Montreal Expo.
- 1:50:52Underhard the winner as Houston wins by one.
- 1:50:55With one out of the ninth inning, the loser Elias Sosa, three and four now, Walk Dennis Walling.
- 1:51:00Howell then followed with a run scoring double to right center. Adjidar, six and four recorded a six complete game.
- 1:51:06Walking two and striking out two.
- 1:51:08At Chase Stadium, Lea Mazzelli snapped the one one time with an eighth inning single.
- 1:51:12And Craig Swan fired a two hitter to leave the New York Mets to a two to one victory over the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:51:19Taveras open the eighth inning with a triple to left center off losing pitcher and reliever Joe McLaughlin now 0-1.
- 1:51:26The fire became on and Mazzelli drove a New York first run with a first inning single,
- 1:51:30stroked the ground ball into right field, just towards Taveras.
- 1:51:34Swan, the losing pitcher is seven and four.
- 1:51:39A correction on that Swan, the winning pitcher now of course is seven and four.
- 1:51:42The American League, Rick Waits and David Clyde combined on an eight hitter.
- 1:51:46Bobby Barnes belted his eighth homer of the year to spark a 19 hit attack,
- 1:51:51leaving the Cleveland Indians their fourth straight victory, a 13 to three triumph over the Seattle Mariners.
- 1:51:57Yankee still losing big to Texas now after seven, nine to one, but the top of the eighth.
- 1:52:03Lou Panella hit a home run for New York, his seventh of the year.
- 1:52:07It came in the eighth with a man on base.
- 1:52:09Let's pause now for station identification.
- 1:52:11This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 1:52:14...
- 1:52:27Denny Matthews along with Fred White and producer engineer Ed Shepard.
- 1:52:32We are at County Stadium Milwaukee and the Brillers are leading 11 to 3, bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:52:37A couple of defensive changes for the Royals, Jamie Clerk is now catching.
- 1:52:42Charlie Terrell has gone to third replacing Brett.
- 1:52:44The Brett and Porter out, Terrell and Clerk into the lineup.
- 1:52:49The batter is Sal Bando.
- 1:52:52Sal has lost single and homer.
- 1:52:56It was Sal who fired the opening salvo in the first inning with a three run home run.
- 1:53:02Charlie Moore hit a two run homer in the third and then Dick Davis with the bases loaded in the fourth.
- 1:53:0911 runs, a dozen hits for the Brewers.
- 1:53:13Bando swings and pops it up into shallow right, out goes Frank White.
- 1:53:17Under the ball makes the catch and there's one away.
- 1:53:20Bando retired for the first time tonight.
- 1:53:24Up comes Glomyn Thomas. He's one out of three.
- 1:53:26His second inning single, he has an RBI and 39 for the year.
- 1:53:31A final score into Montreal where the National League division leaders,
- 1:53:36the Eastern division leading Montreal Expos, have lost to the Western division leading Houston Expos,
- 1:53:44I mean Expos, two to one.
- 1:53:47Ground ball, Patek, it's short, has got it.
- 1:53:50Fires to first to throw off wide and safe.
- 1:53:55Good shot by the apply the tag, but Glomyn Thomas, making the slide, was able to avoid being tagged.
- 1:54:05Patek will draw a throwing error.
- 1:54:12So the Astros two, the Expos one, Montreal started the day leading the National League East by one over St. Louis.
- 1:54:19Houston started the day leading Cincinnati by a game and a half.
- 1:54:24Houston two runs five hits, Montreal one run five hits.
- 1:54:30The batter, Ben Ogilvie, fly to deep center, bounce to second base, walk and score.
- 1:54:39Fly ball, right field.
- 1:54:41Al Collins there, makes the gap.
- 1:54:44Ogilvie flies to right.
- 1:54:49The batter, Sixth Solos Cano, he has walked twice, single one, two runs scored, one RBI.
- 1:54:57Cleveland 13, Seattle 3, a final, Rick Waite wins his ninth, he's nine and four.
- 1:55:03Jones the log, he's one and seven.
- 1:55:10Oh they had an excellent crowd in Cleveland tonight, 32,627.
- 1:55:17The Indians now go one game over 500.
- 1:55:20Jeff Thorblurg has done a remarkable job with that game in the last month and a half.
- 1:55:24Solos Cano takes Rodriguez pitch outside, ball one.
- 1:55:32Thorblurg was under severe fire in April.
- 1:55:37He has certainly turned that Cleveland team around.
- 1:55:40Two balls, no strikes on Sixth Solos Cano.
- 1:55:44The Indians made a trade, they get Mike Hargrove from San Diego in exchange for Paul Dade.
- 1:55:49That was yesterday, ball three is inside.
- 1:55:59The Milwaukee Brewers have had 18 base runners, there's a strike three and one.
- 1:56:06And we are only in the bottom of the fifth inning, 11 to three Brewers.
- 1:56:16Ed Rodriguez pitches, lined up the middle base fifth.
- 1:56:20Solos Cano singles to center, Norman Thomas on his way to third.
- 1:56:2619 base runners.
- 1:56:33Here is Robin Young, singles in the first, walks in the fourth, bounce back to the pitcher in the third.
- 1:56:42He's at first and third.
- 1:56:57Too hot in the bottom of the fifth, Rodriguez pitches and a five-ball left field.
- 1:57:01Wilson to his left and back under the ball now.
- 1:57:04And Willie sucks it away to retire the side.
- 1:57:07No runs, one hit, one error, two left, they have stranded eight.
- 1:57:11Five in Milwaukee in this floor, the Brewers 11, the Royals three.
- 1:57:16Let's check some golf from Rochester, New York.
- 1:57:19Jane Blaylock has a one-stroke lead over Pat Bradley after two rounds of an LPGA golf tournament in the Kodak City.
- 1:57:27Blaylock shot a three on the par 70 for a 36-hole total of seven on the par 139 in the $100,000 event.
- 1:57:35It was Bradley who stole the show today, she shot a fizzling second round 67 which included two Eagles.
- 1:57:41That's the first time in over a year the player on the LPGA Tour has had two Eagles in one round.
- 1:57:46She also set records for nine and 18-holes in the four-year-old tournament with a round of 31-36.
- 1:57:52Sally Vittle, who is opening round 69, tied her with Blaylock for the lead, then he stopped with a 72.
- 1:57:58She's in sole possession of third place at five under par 141.
- 1:58:03Second year pro Barbara Moxness is one shot back in fourth.
- 1:58:07In the baseball note, Brian Bloomberg has filed a grievance over his outright release by the Chicago White Sox early this season.
- 1:58:14The grievance was filed through the Major League Players Association and Bloomberg's attorney.
- 1:58:18Bloomberg is still collecting on a four-year, $400,000 no-cut contract he signed in 1977
- 1:58:26but wants to be put back on the White Sox roster in order to qualify for larger pension benefits.
- 1:58:33Bloomberg has not been signed by any other club and as a result his pension time stopped on April 3rd.
- 1:58:41Baseball score in the American League after seven, the Orioles four and the Twins three.
- 1:58:47We got it at sixth inning, 11-3 in favor of Milwaukee. Jerry Terrell will lead off.
- 1:58:53He is sitting in Gerald Porter's spot. Jamie Quirk will bat in George Brett's place. That is second in the order.
- 1:59:08Jerry Terrell, the right-hand batter. Jerry hitting 364 for the year. He's four out of 11.
- 1:59:18Two of his four hits have been doubled. Bouncing ball deep short. Yownt has a long throw to make.
- 1:59:23Terrell leads the throw. It will be an infield single.
- 1:59:35So the Orioles have seven hits in the last two innings plus one hitter.
- 1:59:43John Wathen steps in. Duke is 0 for 2. Twice he has bounced into fours out.
- 1:59:52Eleven runs on 13 hits for the home-standing Brewers. Three runs, nine hits for the Orioles.
- 2:00:12He's in the right-hand batter. Here's the stretch by Mike Caldwell in the pitch.
- 2:00:16Breaking stuff is inside ball one.
- 2:00:25Mike Caldwell, six feet tall, is 185. Duke tried to take that pitch to right field and missed and the count is one and one.
- 2:00:32Caldwell was born in Tarboro, North Carolina. Lives now in Grafton, Wisconsin, just outside Milwaukee here.
- 2:00:41Bouncing ball past the pitcher to the second baseman. He's going to tag the runner and throw the first two late.
- 2:00:48Terrell is out on the tag. Jerry thinks that Molitor missed him until 10 ties or so.
- 2:01:01Now Terrell continues to argue. Steve Boros is trying to go out and get first the batting helmet and now it's Jerry Terrell.
- 2:01:16Steve Boros becomes the mediator, steps in between and that's that.
- 2:01:24So three times tonight Wapen has hit ground ball. Duke is the first, one away, Frank White is the plate.
- 2:01:34Frank is the two ground balls, one to third, one to second. That's Caldwell's style, he's a sinker baller.
- 2:01:41You know that Mike has his good stuff when you see a lot of ground balls on your score sheet.
- 2:01:45There's a line drive though in the center. Frank White has his first hit of the game.
- 2:01:49Wapen stops at second.
- 2:02:01Here's Fred Poddeck. Freddy's singled in the third, wide to right in the fifth.
- 2:02:08Mike Caldwell, a professional since 71, got to the big leagues for six games his first professional season.
- 2:02:18He was 7-7 for the Padres in his second year.
- 2:02:23Drafted by San Diego at a 6-1 minor league record before joining the Padres for good.
- 2:02:30He was 13-25 in three years with the Padres.
- 2:02:34Traded to the San Francisco Giants for Willie McCovey in October of 73.
- 2:02:45Time out for the moment as Poddeck is outside the batter's box.
- 2:02:48Runners at first and second one away. 11-3 Milwaukee where you're in the top of the sixth.
- 2:02:54Mike Caldwell, set at the bell, here's the pitch.
- 2:02:57A high breaking ball, one ball and no strike.
- 2:03:01We mentioned earlier only Ron Gidry of the Yankees had a better year than Caldwell last season.
- 2:03:07Mike Caldwell led the major leagues with 23 complete games.
- 2:03:13Hot shot on the ground, it is a foul ball.
- 2:03:17Just whistled by the bag at third.
- 2:03:20One ball and one strike.
- 2:03:21Fetty hit the ball with authority.
- 2:03:25Mike Caldwell was second in the major leagues with 22 wins.
- 2:03:29Tied for second in the big leagues with Jim Palmer and Bob Knepper of the Giants with six shutouts.
- 2:03:35Palmer of the Orioles of course, Knepper of the Giants.
- 2:03:39He was third in the big leagues with an ERA of 2.37 and fourth in the big leagues and ending fifth, 293.
- 2:03:47Lots done here.
- 2:03:50Two on, one out, the pitcher Fetty is outside.
- 2:03:54Caldwell set Brewer's season record for wins, complete games, urge run average, shutouts and consecutive wins.
- 2:04:05The season eve ran off seven straight victories.
- 2:04:09The 2-1 pitch, a little bit high.
- 2:04:15The team that Mike Caldwell tormented the most, the world champion Yankees, he shut out the Yankees three times.
- 2:04:24And the last pitcher to do that was a fellow by the name of Dean Shantz with the Angels way back in 1964.
- 2:04:31A bouncing ball to the hole, it's short, down to Molitor for the fourth on Frank White.
- 2:04:38That's the second out of the inning, runners at first and third now.
- 2:04:41Mochek now comes up hobbling.
- 2:04:51That and Willie Wilson, Willie one out of three, single and scored in the fifth.
- 2:05:06Well Todd Cruz is going to replace Fred Potec.
- 2:05:10Fred's still bothered by that bad leg and he was hustling down the space line and has apparently aggravated that injury.
- 2:05:20Well, he'll leave and Todd Cruz will enter.
- 2:05:2211 to 3 Brewer, Royals batting in the top of the sixth.
- 2:05:26The Royals just announced they're going to call up Bill Papsco from Omaha.
- 2:05:30I'm sure and hope that he'll be here tomorrow and be available for both end duty.
- 2:05:33It looks like the effort to make a trade have fallen through,
- 2:05:37barring some last minute thing tonight and that doesn't look too hopeful I wouldn't think.
- 2:05:42Willie hits a high drive to deep left field, back goes Pat Ogilvy.
- 2:05:46He's at the wall and it is gone.
- 2:05:48Willie Wilson, a free run homer.
- 2:05:51That makes it 11 to 6 Milwaukee.
- 2:05:54The ninth home run surrendered by Mike Caldwell this season.
- 2:06:06Willie has his third home run of the year and that's the first home that he has hit out of the ballpark.
- 2:06:12His first two home runs were inside the park home runs.
- 2:06:16So will he get Skelly Gibson?
- 2:06:31That gives Wilson 13 RBI.
- 2:06:34Jamie Clark at the plate and James takes the strike on one.
- 2:06:41Clark up there for the first time.
- 2:06:44Breaking ball is grounded pass first base coach Steve Burrows.
- 2:06:48Jamie is 2 out of 6 this year.
- 2:06:51Anyway, we understand that Texas has picked up left hander John Henry Johnson's moment for Dave Chalk and Mike Heath.
- 2:07:03Outside, I'll tell you Johnson is a fine pitcher.
- 2:07:06He's a left hander.
- 2:07:07We saw him last year.
- 2:07:09Heath is a very promising catcher.
- 2:07:15A little bit outside.
- 2:07:17One more guy you could assume that everybody is after on this late hour is Shane Lawley of Seattle probably.
- 2:07:23Another young left hander.
- 2:07:25Hot shot, they hit right field.
- 2:07:27Clark singles between Cooper and Molitor and his name is Otis.
- 2:07:33And they're beginning to throw the ball into the Milwaukee dugout.
- 2:07:47Out comes Cal McClish.
- 2:07:50Paul Mitchell begins to throw for the Brewers.
- 2:07:54Fans may not be familiar with the name John Henry Johnson because he's been pretty well buried on an open ball club.
- 2:08:03But I've got to agree with you from what we've seen of him.
- 2:08:07I have to think if you put him on a good ball club that he's going to be a very effective pitcher.
- 2:08:14I'll tell you it's a good trade in both cases because Heath progresses the way that most baseball people think he will while the A's have a fine catcher for a number of years.
- 2:08:27And it's good for the A's because any time you can trade a pitcher for an everyday player and especially a catcher, a second baseman, a short stopper, a center fielder, you're well ahead of the game.
- 2:08:39And with Sunberg, the Rangers don't need a catcher barring injury obviously.
- 2:08:46And it will really help their pitching staff.
- 2:08:48And they felt that they were just one pitcher short.
- 2:08:51How do you think Dave Chuck must feel tonight? He's gone from the club leading the division to a strong contender to Oblivion.
- 2:08:59Dave is probably thinking, shock me off, huh?
- 2:09:02He's just shot one up for Charlie.
- 2:09:05Something along those lines.
- 2:09:07Foul by Amos Otis. One ball and one strike.
- 2:09:1811 to 6, Milwaukee. Royals batting in the top of the sixth.
- 2:09:23Mike Caldwell pitches. Amos Otis gets a change, a high change of bat, and he bounces foul fast.
- 2:09:29The third base coach Chuck Hiller. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:09:33The Royals' papers will make anything reading the trading deadline midnight tonight.
- 2:09:37There will be some things done this evening.
- 2:09:39Let's explain that trading deadline.
- 2:09:43Midnight New York.
- 2:09:48Here's the pitch.
- 2:09:50Inside.
- 2:09:52If the Royals are trading with a team on the west coast, for instance, they can do so until 2 a.m. Midwest time.
- 2:10:01So 3 o'clock in New York, it's all over. Midnight on the west coast.
- 2:10:06A drive down the right field line, chasing it is Lesado, and he makes a foul ball, basket-style catch.
- 2:10:13The retire Amos Otis and the Royals in the sixth.
- 2:10:16The Royals on Willie Wilson's three-run home run.
- 2:10:20Three runs on four hits.
- 2:10:22And as we go to the bottom of the sixth, the Brewer's 11, the Royals sixth.
- 2:10:27In tennis today, four-feeted Arthur Ashe outlasts the South African Bernie Mitten in a third-round marathon lasting 6 hours and 13 minutes.
- 2:10:35To reach the quarterfinals of the Queens Club Graff Court Championships in London,
- 2:10:39the 1975 Lumberland champions finish the match with a 7-6, 4-6, 15-13 win,
- 2:10:45after being interrupted four times by rain, which virtually washed out the day's program.
- 2:10:51France quickly grab a 2-0 lead in their quarterfinal European zone Davis Cup meeting
- 2:10:56against Cleveland before only 250 spectators.
- 2:11:00In single play, Yannick Noah crouched Hans Gunthardt, 6-3 and 6-2,
- 2:11:07and Dominique Biddell defeated Roland Sadler, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, and 6-4.
- 2:11:18Checking some other things in sports, saying there's an imminent danger of serious disorders
- 2:11:22during the Pan-American Games in Puerto Rico next month.
- 2:11:25Governor Carlos Romero Barcellos signed an order Friday night in San Juan mobilizing the National Guard.
- 2:11:31It is the first time the National Guard of the vision of the U.S. Army has been called out
- 2:11:36during the administration of Romero Barcellos.
- 2:11:39The governor declined to take the measure during last year's violence and sabotage strike-strike at the state power company.
- 2:11:47He also said similar measures have been taken in other nations, staging major international sports events.
- 2:11:57We go to the bottom of the sixth, 11-6 Milwaukee.
- 2:12:00Dick Davis, Charlie Moore, Paul Molacher coming up.
- 2:12:04Davis won out of three, but that one was a grand slam home run.
- 2:12:08He came back in the fourth inning.
- 2:12:13Eduardo Rodriguez has been in there since the third inning.
- 2:12:17One ball and no strike.
- 2:12:21The final score, Texas 9, New York 5, for the Rangers over the Yankees in Texas.
- 2:12:30Inside, 2-0.
- 2:12:32Nine runs, 10 hits for Texas. Five runs, 10 hits for the Yankees.
- 2:12:38Chicago, the Red Sox and the White Sox going at it. The White Sox are leading 8-3.
- 2:12:45It's all three. 3-0.
- 2:12:48Carlton Smith, Olmert for Boston.
- 2:12:51It came in the eighth inning with nobody on his second.
- 2:12:55Red Sox still trail by five, 8-3.
- 2:12:59Here's the 3-0 pitch.
- 2:13:02Strike called, 3-1.
- 2:13:13Signal given by Jamie Clark.
- 2:13:18Inside, ball four.
- 2:13:24Well, that's only 20 base runners. The Brewers have had five innings in one hitter.
- 2:13:32Here's Charlie Moore who's gone a three, a two run home run in the third.
- 2:13:50Five ball into right center. Otis to his left is there and makes the catch.
- 2:13:54Charlie Moore retired.
- 2:13:56On the way into Milwaukee sixth inning and here comes Paul Molacher.
- 2:14:00He is four out of four.
- 2:14:04Four singles, two runs scored, two stolen bases.
- 2:14:10We salute the Pro-Am dealer in Medicine Lodge, Kansas.
- 2:14:14Full line supply company.
- 2:14:17B&G discount on a Barts in Kansas City, Kansas.
- 2:14:23Paul Molacher, a six game hitting streak.
- 2:14:27He started the night hitting 3-0-3 and he's four out of four.
- 2:14:30He's twice as one down the right field line.
- 2:14:32It is peeling off into the crowd.
- 2:14:34No balls and a strike.
- 2:14:37Dan Ford, Olmert to the Angels in the ninth inning with nobody on his eighth.
- 2:14:41The Angels out in front of the Tigers, eight to seven.
- 2:14:47Boston got three in the eighth.
- 2:14:50They have chopped into the Light Sox lead.
- 2:14:52It's now the Light Sox eight, Boston five.
- 2:14:56Red Sox trying to rally.
- 2:14:57Molacher takes high, one ball and a strike.
- 2:15:07Eleven runs, 13 hits for the Brewers.
- 2:15:09Six runs, a dozen hits for the Royals.
- 2:15:11There goes the runner.
- 2:15:12Five balls, short center, Otis is there and makes the catch.
- 2:15:16Dick Davis retreats to first.
- 2:15:18Paul Molacher retired for the first time tonight and the batter will be Cecil Cooper.
- 2:15:28Cecil is one out of four.
- 2:15:30He's singled and scored in the first inning.
- 2:15:34Tomorrow afternoon, either Marty Patton or Steve Roeske against Jim Clayton.
- 2:15:39And on Sunday afternoon, Rich Gale and Larry Sorensen.
- 2:15:47Runner at first, two down.
- 2:15:48Here's the pitch.
- 2:15:49It's way inside, backhanded by Jamie Quirk.
- 2:16:00Just the perfect night for baseball.
- 2:16:02It's not blowing to left, it was blowing quite hard when the game started.
- 2:16:06But the wind has calmed a bit, the temperature in the 80s.
- 2:16:11The weatherman says tomorrow, temperature into the 90s.
- 2:16:23One ball and one strike on, left hand hitting Cecil Cooper.
- 2:16:27Now a ball backing out of play.
- 2:16:31One ball and two strikes.
- 2:16:44The Rillers try to win their 35th game of the year.
- 2:16:46They're 34 and 29.
- 2:16:48Royals are 33 and 29.
- 2:16:50Flying to right field, they hit for Cooper.
- 2:16:53Dick Davis puts on the brakes in second.
- 2:17:01Val Bando comes toward the plate.
- 2:17:03Val hit a three run homer in the first, walked in the second, singled and scored in the fourth,
- 2:17:08and popped his second in the fifth.
- 2:17:17First and second occupied, two outs.
- 2:17:25Right hander against right hander, outside the foul, ball one.
- 2:17:38Frank Howard, the big first base coach talking to Cecil Cooper.
- 2:17:42He takes down too low.
- 2:17:50Frank Howard is listed in the Milwaukee Press Guide at 6'7", 300 pounds.
- 2:17:56He has definitely lost weight since last year.
- 2:17:58There's the breaking ball for strike two and one.
- 2:18:02His weight last year was in the neighborhood of 375.
- 2:18:07He was born in Columbus, Ohio.
- 2:18:10Makes his home in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 2:18:12He attended Ohio State.
- 2:18:14Fine basketball player there.
- 2:18:19Bando hits the foul ball, backing out of play.
- 2:18:21Quirk to the screen, is nothing doing.
- 2:18:23Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:18:26Frank Howard in his major league career is 382 home runs, 123 in the national league.
- 2:18:35He was with the Dodgers, five full seasons with the Dodgers.
- 2:18:39Then spent seven years with the Washington Senators, 259 career homers in the American League.
- 2:18:48And a very respectable batting average for his flugger anyway, a 273.
- 2:18:53Bando hits a high pop foul, George Scott right to the barrier, no play.
- 2:19:02Frank Howard played 15 years in the big league.
- 2:19:05He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1960 with the Dodgers.
- 2:19:10Finished his career with the Tigers, spent 74 in Japan.
- 2:19:17Designed by the Dodgers in 1958.
- 2:19:22He hit one of the hardest home runs I have ever seen hit off the Royals.
- 2:19:26Left-hander Tom Bergmeier at the old stadium in Washington, D.C., bouncing ball to short.
- 2:19:30Cruz goes to white for the first play on Cooper's second and that's the inning.
- 2:19:35One hit, no runs, a walk to left, they strand it ten, but they score 11.
- 2:19:39The end is six, the drillers 11, the Royals six.
- 2:19:43Couple of baseball notes, possibly with tongue-in-cheek and possibly not,
- 2:19:48but Harrelson's former softball team is demanding compensation from the Philadelphia Phillies for signing Bud.
- 2:19:54Harrelson played for the Browzerie, a team in a league governed by the Huntington Long Island Softball Commission.
- 2:20:00Commissioner Ty, the letterer of the Huntington group, fired off a letter to the baseball commissioner, Fui Kuen, asking compensation for Harrelson.
- 2:20:08Bud retired from baseball two months ago and has been playing softball on weekends.
- 2:20:12Recently returned to the Phillies after he lost a couple of infielders through injuries.
- 2:20:16The compensation Huntington is asking for is silly relief pitcher, Claude McGraw, a blight spirit on and off the diamond.
- 2:20:23Former Detroit Tiger first baseman Norm Cash is in serious condition after having what doctors believe was a slight stroke.
- 2:20:31A Tiger's team positions as Cash suffered some paralysis on the right side of his face and body, but is still able to speak.
- 2:20:38The 44-year-old Cash played for the Tigers from 1960 through 1974, hitting 373 home runs in that span.
- 2:20:48While on Thursday the Cleveland Indians and San Diego Potrades completed the trade, the Indians sent out Fielder Paul Dade to the Potrades in exchange for first baseman Mike Hargrove.
- 2:20:59The 27-year-old Dade was batting 282 for the Tribe with three homers and 18 runs batted in.
- 2:21:04Hargrove, who's 29, hit only 192 with no homers and eight RBIs to the Potrades this year, but he's a lifetime 288 hitter.
- 2:21:14As the Royals come to bat in the seventh, the Brewers have a new pitcher, and he is none other than Paul Mitchell.
- 2:21:21We owe you a station break, so let's take care of that item of business right now. This is the Kansas City Royals Radio Network.
- 2:21:27This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 2:21:39Denny Matthews along with Fred White and producer-engineer Ed Sheppard at County Stadium, Milwaukee, where a fine crowd of 32,812 seats.
- 2:21:48A lot of hits, runs, a couple of errors. 11 runs, 14 hits for the Brewers, 6 runs, and 12 hits for the Royals.
- 2:21:59So Paul Mitchell takes over. Mike Caldwell in six innings to allow the six runs to a dozen hits.
- 2:22:05Seven innings, here again is Fred. Okay, thank you, Denny. On a night that the Royals got to, Mike Caldwell, who had finished nine of his 13 starts prior to this,
- 2:22:13and they got to him for six runs and a dozen hits in six innings, and tonight the Royal pitching couldn't hold him.
- 2:22:20The Royals down by five. Still alive and breathing here in Milwaukee, the offense bringing to life.
- 2:22:27After the Royals were down six to nothing, they cut it to six to two, then it was 11 to two.
- 2:22:31Now they're back to 11 to six, and Al Callens hoping to start something against Paul Mitchell, formerly of the Oakland A's and the Seattle Mariters.
- 2:22:42Right hander against right hander to start the Royal half of the seven.
- 2:22:47Mitchell set the first pitch, Al Callens on the way. High bouncer foul, pass third. One strike.
- 2:22:56The Reds beat the Phillies six to three tonight. A title in Philadelphia.
- 2:23:09Mitchell running, here's the pitch. High fly ball, right field. Six to Los Canos, just in a couple of steps, makes the catch.
- 2:23:17Al Callens retired, he's won for four tonight. Now George Scott, who is single and short, he's won for three.
- 2:23:26And again the Blue River fans beat Scott with booze.
- 2:23:34George was very vocal about running out of Milwaukee, the fans haven't forgotten.
- 2:23:42And aren't likely to. Mitchell ready to pitch.
- 2:23:47We're going to miss by Scott. Jerry Finnell next.
- 2:24:01Mitchell ready again to pitch. Outside one and one.
- 2:24:06The Royal offense tonight has been marked by a pre-run homer by Willie Wilson. The first home run in his major league career that he did out of the park.
- 2:24:14He had two inside departures earlier this year.
- 2:24:19Now Charlie Moore out to talk to Paul Mitchell. The conference breaks up in a hurry.
- 2:24:27George Scott wearing number zero. He had always worn number five, but you know who that belongs to on the Royal.
- 2:24:36Right call, one and two. In case you don't, George Brett.
- 2:24:46Mitchell set to pitch again. All outside the county, even South to two. Paul Mitchell thought he had him struck out.
- 2:24:59Four foot down a side. Here's the two-two pitch.
- 2:25:04High bouncer to shortstop Robin Yow with a chest high hop, but it was out Scott's two men gone.
- 2:25:10Scott's run for four tonight. Here's Jerry Terrell who's beat out an infield single his first time up.
- 2:25:16Well how would you little leaguers like to take your entire team out to see the Royal's big leaguers play free?
- 2:25:22For your chance, just register at any participating unit Royal dealer.
- 2:25:30Terrell in, two out, nobody on, top of the seventh, 11 to six Milwaukee.
- 2:25:39Now Terrell steps out again. Watson will hit.
- 2:25:44Tipped inning if Terrell gets aboard.
- 2:25:48Here's the pitch.
- 2:25:51Off-speed braking stuff high, one and oh.
- 2:25:59More foot down another side. Mitchell set again to pitch. High flies all center field.
- 2:26:04Worman Thomas backpedaling in front of the warning track. Rings it down and the innings over.
- 2:26:09The Royals go one, two, three. We go to the bottom of the seventh in Milwaukee.
- 2:26:13The Brewers 11 and the Royals six.
- 2:26:16One of the longer ball games, at least a little bit longer than average, we usually figure about two hours and 45.
- 2:26:22We're heading down 20 minutes away from the three-hour mark and we still have possibly two and a half innings to go.
- 2:26:28A big lead though, we may only have two because Milwaukee were not that in the home nine.
- 2:26:34Well San Francisco Giants fans have Ron Gordon to thank for 75 cent hot dogs at Candlestick Park.
- 2:26:42Yesterday Gordon won 11 month title to get the San Francisco Park and Recreation Board to roll back a five cent hot dog surcharge
- 2:26:50at Granite Stevens California Enterprises.
- 2:26:53He had to pay for the surcharge to pay for wrapping the dogs in paper as required by the state health code.
- 2:27:00The 33-year-old biology teacher drew charts, even demonstrated hot dog wrapping to show the Recreation Board
- 2:27:07it could be done a lot faster than Stevens was claiming.
- 2:27:10When the board voted yesterday to roll back the extra nickels and elated Gordon said, hot dog.
- 2:27:20That's not really what he said. He said, I can't believe it took this long.
- 2:27:23A friend's wife was pregnant when she began and now they have a ten month old baby.
- 2:27:27So it's still hot dog.
- 2:27:30Alright let's check the scoreboard now.
- 2:27:34The Yankees have been beaten by Texas nine to five.
- 2:27:38Baltimore, Minnesota on the top of the ninth.
- 2:27:41Orioles at bat and it's all tied up at four to four.
- 2:27:44Final of the National League, Cincinnati beats Philadelphia six to three.
- 2:27:47The Yankees have two braves one. Houston one over Montreal two to one.
- 2:27:50Game just underway. One and a half. Pittsburgh one. Lafaz is nothing.
- 2:27:53No score after two between St. Louis and San Francisco.
- 2:27:57Nothing in yet. Chicago and San Diego, but they are underway.
- 2:28:03Some other finals in the American League. Toronto six, Oakland nothing.
- 2:28:06That game was finished a long time ago.
- 2:28:08Cleveland slaughtered Seattle 13 to three.
- 2:28:10And California's eight to seven. Eight to seven win over Detroit.
- 2:28:13Marky Anderson is 0-2, a new skipper of the Tigers.
- 2:28:17Final of the seventh in Milwaukee.
- 2:28:19Stephen and Corey takes over on the mound now for the Loyals.
- 2:28:22Ed Rodriguez went three in the third. Gave up seven hits, five runs, a home run.
- 2:28:30The Loyals are going to have to come back or slip five games behind California.
- 2:28:35The Angels have hung on to defeat Detroit eight to seven tonight.
- 2:28:40Cardinal three San Francisco, or Cardinal nothing San Francisco nothing.
- 2:28:44The bottom of the third. White Sox beat Boston eight to five tonight.
- 2:28:52And then Corey's first pick to Gorman Thomas misses outside. Ball one.
- 2:28:56In Cincinnati's win Tom Siebert got the win. He's four and five.
- 2:28:59Chris is the loser one and four.
- 2:29:06Corey ready to pitch again. Swing and a miss.
- 2:29:10Count even down the ball on the strike on Gorman Thomas.
- 2:29:15Apparently the most excitement in the park right now is the servants down the left field line.
- 2:29:19Everybody paying attention to that and none of the game.
- 2:29:27Then he has the glasses on. We make it a blow by blow account.
- 2:29:30Here's a pitch to Gorman Thomas. Strike call one and two.
- 2:29:46Nobody on nobody out. Bottom of the seventh, 11 to six Milwaukee.
- 2:29:51Gorman Thomas pitches a high foul ball in the upper deck down the left field side. Two and one and two.
- 2:30:04Then he's lost interest. It must have been a very weak altercation.
- 2:30:10Now he's back at it.
- 2:30:16Gorman Thomas waiting. Gorman Thomas whining. Here's the pitch.
- 2:30:19Way outside. Count evens out two two.
- 2:30:29Good crowd here tonight. 32,812.
- 2:30:36And Gorman Thomas is in a full count. Three and two.
- 2:30:51Gorman Thomas waiting. Stephen and Corey whining. Here comes a three two pitch.
- 2:30:56High foul ball down the left field side again. Gorman Thomas at home run range.
- 2:31:03Three and two to count.
- 2:31:12Gap field playing Thomas deep in the ball.
- 2:31:18And Corey ready again to three two pitch on the way.
- 2:31:21Popped him up foul but it's going to be out of play.
- 2:31:24Here the Royal dugout runs out of room.
- 2:31:34So still three and two to Gorman Thomas.
- 2:31:43So home and Corey with a new baseball set to work again.
- 2:31:50Back in. Again the line and again the three two pitch.
- 2:31:56Ball four.
- 2:32:00That's the seventh walk given up by Royal pitching tonight.
- 2:32:03The first issued by Stephen and Corey. He walks the first man he faces.
- 2:32:08Here comes Ben Ogilvie who's over three. He's walking toward the run.
- 2:32:21Now the sixth man who had walked prior to this. Three is short.
- 2:32:25So yes the baseball on ball does hurt.
- 2:32:30It's eleven to six Brewers. We're in the bottom of the seventh. Ogilvie in.
- 2:32:35Scott holding the runner at first to pitch.
- 2:32:38Ground ball. Scott grabs and steps on first throws the second.
- 2:32:41Now they've got the runner trapped and he is tanked out by George Scott.
- 2:32:45An excellent play by Scott at first base.
- 2:32:49Ogilvie just hit a BB down the first base line. Scott.
- 2:32:54Able to pick it off. Steps on the bag.
- 2:32:58Then through the shortstop Todd Cruz who ran Thomas back to first then fired to Scott who tanked him out.
- 2:33:04So it's a three six three double play.
- 2:33:07With George Scott recording both foot outs of course.
- 2:33:10Two out nobody on to Sixth Field Lescano. He has singles wide. He has walks wide.
- 2:33:16Driven in a run and scored wide.
- 2:33:21So quickly two out nobody on.
- 2:33:24And now Lescano in and Corey's pitch.
- 2:33:27Ground ball to shortstop Cruz has it. Comes up gunning and the inning's over.
- 2:33:31Lescano goes short to first. No runs no hits. Nobody left.
- 2:33:35And after seven it's Milwaukee 11 and the Royals six.
- 2:33:39Now Bumrey has just smashed a triple to the right field corner and the Orioles have scored twice in the top of the ninth.
- 2:33:46So Minnesota now coming to bat and they need a couple of runs to stay alive in that ball game.
- 2:33:51The score is the Orioles six and the twins four.
- 2:33:55Al Bumrey has been hot as a Blake getting his first triple of the year. He picked a good time to do it with two mates on board.
- 2:34:01Mike Squires drove in four runs including two with a double a key to five run second inning.
- 2:34:06The Chicago White Sox registered an eight to five victory over the Boston Red Sox.
- 2:34:10Chicago also took advantage of three Boston errors as Rich Wartham seven and five picked up the victory.
- 2:34:16Allowing eight hits before giving way to Steve Trout in the eighth inning.
- 2:34:20Again it's eight to five Chicago over Boston.
- 2:34:25Dan Ford snapped a seven to seven tie with a ninth inning over and Bobby Gritch belted a pair of home runs.
- 2:34:30Driving three runs giving the California Angels an eight to seven victory over Detroit.
- 2:34:35And handing new Tigers manager Sparky Anderson his second loss in his many nights.
- 2:34:39John Grubb and Al Oliver each drove in a couple of runs in an eight run fifth inning to propel the Texas Rangers for nine to five wins over the New York Yankees.
- 2:34:48New York starter Ed Bigarro retired the first eleven men he faced.
- 2:34:52But after the Rangers tied the game one one in the fourth they sent twelve men to the plate in the fifth for their most productive inning of the season.
- 2:34:59And the National Lake Tom Steber celebrated the two year anniversary of his trade to Cincinnati by tossing a six hitter.
- 2:35:04And also double on two runs as Cincinnati beat Philadelphia six to three.
- 2:35:11The sixth Milwaukee John Watson deleted off against Paul Mitchell and again here's Denny.
- 2:35:18I read Watson is 0 for 3 he has four to run.
- 2:35:21Eleven runs on fourteen hits four Milwaukee they got three in the first one in the second two in the third and five in the fourth none since.
- 2:35:30The Royals two in the fourth one in the fifth and three in the sixth.
- 2:35:34The Rockland fly ball in the right field was kind of fading back makes the catch and there's one away.
- 2:35:44The Royals three runs in the sixth the result of Willie Wilson's home run is first outside the park home run this year he had two inside the park home run.
- 2:35:55The batter is Frank White Frank is one out of three single in the sixth.
- 2:36:03It's been a big day or a day night for the Brewers thirty two thousand eight hundred twelve looking on.
- 2:36:09They have drawn very well this year.
- 2:36:12After a Paul Mitchell fastball didn't get it.
- 2:36:24The Brewers started the night having drawn five hundred and eighty five thousand so far.
- 2:36:30The Bulls by a curve it's a foul ball by the Brewer dugout and Charlie Moore the catcher makes a nice catch.
- 2:36:37Paul Mitchell really pulled the string on a breaking ball and Frank off the side and pulled fouls out.
- 2:36:42Morris he neared the Milwaukee Brewers dugout took a little peek to see where he was but nonetheless able to make the catch.
- 2:36:50Two down now Steve Braun is going to hit for Todd Cruz.
- 2:37:08Steve Braun has a four game hitting streak alive having gone seven for fifteen four runs a pair of homers and three RBI.
- 2:37:18In his last six games has gone nine for twenty one he takes a strike on one.
- 2:37:29Right hander Paul Mitchell ready and pitches.
- 2:37:33Fastball missed away one ball and one strike.
- 2:37:43The Bulls come in the top of the eighth the Royals down eleven six off speed and outside.
- 2:37:53Mitchell two one pitch Braun chops one foul off his front foot and that was stung.
- 2:38:01Get to the hot get to the hot right here come here get home here come here.
- 2:38:14That pitch sharply down on his instep.
- 2:38:20Two balls two strikes two outs.
- 2:38:29Now we're ready Paul Mitchell's two two pitch over but low three and two Braun has an excellent eye.
- 2:38:41Back he comes in a high drive to deep right field.
- 2:38:44Lascano on the warning track as Brew makes the catch and that ends the inning.
- 2:38:49Steve Braun hits the ball deep and out the Royals down one two three in the top of the eighth.
- 2:38:54The Brewers take their turn in the bottom of the eighth inning and Milwaukee leads the Royals eleven to six.
- 2:38:58Billie Jean King blasted a warning of her intention to capture the all time record of 20 Wimbledon titles today by overwhelming Martina Neva DeLova six one six two in just over 45 minutes at England's Chessister Tennis Tournament.
- 2:39:13The 35 year old King was more alert more enthusiastic and more competitive than the Wimbledon champion.
- 2:39:19Neva DeLova won the first game but then lost ten in a row and a spell of utter depression and lack of touch with the soft grass.
- 2:39:26She watched the match slip from her grasp with a suddenness that stunned the crowd.
- 2:39:30King has a semifinal encounter with former Wimbledon champion Yvonne Gullagong who ended Tantigarden's fine run by six two seven six in the quarterfinal.
- 2:39:41Earlier in the day Tegarden had beaten Rosie Casale two six six two and six three.
- 2:39:47At London temperamental tennis star Linus Tazi mainstay of a little known Romanian squad scored a straight set victory over West Germany's Peter Elter.
- 2:39:55To keep his country hope alive in the European zone B quarterfinals of the Davis Cup.
- 2:40:00Tazi one of the absentees from this month's upcoming Wimbledon championships because of nagging injury won six four six four and six two.
- 2:40:08Poland's Wojciech Pajbik like Tazi a lone world class player on an inexperienced team.
- 2:40:14Posted in static six two six love two six and six four win over Italy's Andriano Pannata in a zone B quarterfinal to raise the possibility of a surprise Polish victory over the 1976 champion.
- 2:40:29The return singles matches will be played on Wednesday.
- 2:40:34Milwaukee eleven the Royal Six bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:40:38Robin Youn is the plate.

- 2:40:53Outfielder catcher designated hitter Cliff Johnson goes from New York to Cleveland in exchange for a left hand pitcher Don Hood.
- 2:41:04A ball to Robin Youn one and one.
- 2:41:12Here's the pitch.
- 2:41:14Down ball sharply hit Washington now at short nice backhand pickup in the three.
- 2:41:18Got him. Oh and a play by Youn.
- 2:41:22Youn Washington who has just entered the ballgame.
- 2:41:27We all remember batted for Todd Cruz. Youn makes a sparkling play deep in the hole at short.
- 2:41:33Not only a fine stop but an even better throw.
- 2:41:36Youn can run one away here is Dick Davis.
- 2:41:44Davis a grand slam home run in the fourth inning.
- 2:41:49And as the Royals scored two in the fourth one in the fifth and three in the sixth that grand slam home run became a mighty mighty big item in this game.
- 2:41:58The first pitch is a strike on one.
- 2:42:03The other trade tonight between the Texas Rangers and the Oakland A's.
- 2:42:07Mike Heath and Dave Shaw.

- 2:43:00Paul Splittorf made the start his first pitching assignment he missed nine days you know because of the flu.
- 2:43:06Bouncing ball foul outside third.
- 2:43:11When Paul struggled it was just hard work for Splitt tonight didn't have his good stuff didn't have his good control at all he was behind almost every hitter and as you know that is very unlikable.
- 2:43:23Though he missed the week and a half and he paid the price tonight.
- 2:43:27So did the Royals the Brewers had the Royals down six nothing after three.
- 2:43:34And 11 to two at the end of four.
- 2:43:44No balls and a strike on Charlie Moore right hand batter.

- 2:49:01The trials have something cooking here to on nobody out that means action in the Milwaukee bullpen.
- 2:49:09George Badberger the manager of the Brewers riding very purposefully toward the mound.
- 2:49:21George has done quite a job with his Milwaukee team named by the sporting news as the major league manager of the year in 78.
- 2:49:33The Brewers to third place in the Eastern Division with 93 wins trail the division winning and pennant winning and then World Series winning Yankees by six and a half.
- 2:49:52Badger spent 10 years as pitching coach with the Baltimore Orioles and had 1820 game winner in 10 years.
- 2:50:05He's going to leave Mitchell and the pitch to Amos.
- 2:50:08Amos two out of four a couple of singles.
- 2:50:11You are nobody out 11 to six Milwaukee and there's a shot to center field.
- 2:50:15Thomas though is there and he makes the catch that ball is hit on a line and then at the last moment it sort of dipped on Berman Thomas but he stayed right with it.
- 2:50:25Otis lines hard to center.
- 2:50:30Here's Al Collins Al is one out of four single his first time up facing Mitchell just once he applied to right field.
- 2:50:42What's the shame of Otis gets that ball into left center right center the Royals really has something on the fire.
- 2:50:48That's a big out that really halts your momentum you need five to tie.
- 2:50:55The Royals could have used a break with regard to the location of that line drive but Thomas was playing Otis perfectly.
- 2:51:07The third Scott will be next the Royals need two more runners to have a chance bounce foul wide of third no balls in a strike on Al Collins.
- 2:51:23Eleven runs on 14 hits for the Brewers six runs on 14 hits for the Royals.
- 2:51:36Wilson at second Jamie Clark at first Jamie two out of two since taking over behind the plate for Darrell Porter.
- 2:51:44Why ball short left field Ogilvy is going to have to hurry they said Willie Wilson to third and the bases are loaded Ogilvy tried to decoy Willie then tried to act as if he was going to make the catch but Willie knew better.
- 2:52:00George Scott he could pull the Royals to within one single run.
- 2:52:10The Royals now have actually out hit the Brewers by one but still trail by five.
- 2:52:18Scott is one out of four he's singled in the fourth why the deep center is first time at bat in a Royal uniform.
- 2:52:27George Bamberger the manager the Brewers is now standing in the Milwaukee dugout.
- 2:52:32This was a laugher for a while bouncing ball base hit the center Willie scores here comes Jamie quick to the plate Thomas throw to third and safe with Collins.
- 2:52:44Eleven to eight and the time that is at the plate Jerry Carroll is coming up and so is manager George Bamberger and that's it for Mitchell.
- 2:53:00Very interesting.
- 2:53:02Pitching change being made the situation is runners at first and third still been one out.
- 2:53:08We are in the top of the ninth and the score down Milwaukee 11 Royals eight.
- 2:53:12Let's take that time to check the scoreboard of the West Coast games in the National League those scores still at the two Chicago and San Diego Pittsburgh and Los Angeles three and a half bucks one.
- 2:53:22And the Dodgers nothing St. Louis and San Francisco three and a half car goes one the Giants one big news there though is Willie McCovey is another home run game of the fourth nobody on his ninth of the year and his 514 career home run the cover your home run.
- 2:53:37Nobody on the fourth for the giant.
- 2:53:40Yeah the final scores in the American League California beat Detroit eight to seven Cleveland triumph over Seattle 13 to three to the Toronto Blake Oakland six nothing Chicago beat Boston eight to five and Baltimore has just one they held off Minnesota started put out the fire from the both end.
- 2:53:58The twins scored one time in the whole night after the Orioles scored twice the top of the night Baltimore holds on to win six to five now by winning the Red Sox losing to Chicago eight to five the Orioles are now two games in front of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East Milwaukee
- 2:54:18hoping to hold on to win this one if they do they'll still six back the Yankees have lost to Texas for the Yankees are seven and a half behind Baltimore Yankees 33 and 30 Orioles 40 and 22 Detroit's lost.
- 2:54:31So they're eight and a half back Cleveland remains eight and a half Toronto 22 and a half in the West California is one so right now at the moment after Minnesota lost they are now four and a half in front of the twins.
- 2:54:47The Michigan counties video Red Sheep Cleveland now pitching.
- 2:54:51He's one and three with two saves this is his 17th appearance.
- 2:54:56His average is 4.11 allowed 35 hits and 31 innings 12 strikeouts and nine walks
- 2:55:08Cleveland now going to take over for Paul Mitchell people talk as grab the bat and he'll be hitting for Carol often follows people talk at Dodger Stadium tonight the pirates are leaving the Dodgers one to nothing the Dodgers are batting in the bottom of the fourth.
- 2:55:29And McCovey has homered for the San Francisco Giants that came in the fourth inning with nobody on it was the 514 of his career is nice this season.
- 2:55:44San Francisco on the Covey's home run is taking a two to one lead over the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 2:56:03Baltimore six Minnesota for the twins are batting in the bottom of the night Baltimore got two in the top of the night.
- 2:56:15Right hander Richard Cleveland about to work to people thought he did 771.
- 2:56:34Let's see how he is done against the Brewers this year.
- 2:56:54He's still for nine.
- 2:56:56With one RBI to run for.
- 2:57:05He is in his last 15 at bat.
- 2:57:08That is the first and third one out and a shot into left center field.
- 2:57:11Over the is there makes the catch.
- 2:57:26Here's John Watson.
- 2:57:37George Scott the runner at first two out of the top of the ninth eleven to nine Milwaukee.
- 2:57:46The tying run at the Blake Redsheep Cleveland set at the belt.
- 2:57:50The six to Duke hammered out and missed.
- 2:57:53Cleveland has surrendered two home runs this year.
- 2:58:03Two years ago and Watson in his first two big league homers one of them was hit right here in this ballpark.
- 2:58:10The one pitch up to high one ball and one strike.
- 2:58:21Now the stretch here's the pitch.
- 2:58:33The breeze is blowing toward left.
- 2:58:35Cleveland made a mistake and gave Watson something to fall.
- 2:58:58That's right.
- 2:59:17We have a score it's probably a base it.
- 2:59:21No ruling.
- 2:59:26The Royals trailed 11 to 2 after 4 innings. Now it's 11 to 9 and they have the tying run
- 2:59:33at first. Lowen outside and got away from the catcher but no advance.
- 2:59:42The Royals have 17 hits in this game.
- 2:59:46But they trailed by 2 with 2 out of the 9. Reggie Cleveland trying to nail down the win.
- 2:59:53Here's the pitch. Line drive, base hit and a left field. George Scott around 3rd to score
- 2:59:59and Waffen the tying run, stops at 2nd. 11 to 10 Milwaukee.
- 3:00:06Frank White picks up his 13th RBI.
- 3:00:08Here is UL Washington.
- 3:00:26UL batting for the first time tonight. Batting average 254, 10 RBI.
- 3:00:32He's a foot shooter, out comes George Bamberger.
- 3:00:40Look back into this inning now and recall if you will the ball off the bat of Amos Otis.
- 3:00:46The line shot right at Gorman Thomas. Remember I said oh if the ball had only been in the left center
- 3:00:52or right center, well it wasn't. That's going to do it for Cleveland. The Brewers are going to make
- 3:00:59the pitching change. Now the Royals have runners at 1st and 2nd. There are 2 outs.
- 3:01:04And the score now Milwaukee 11 and the Royals 10.
- 3:01:10Here's the final score. I'll give a report on this one from Bloomington, Minnesota.
- 3:01:15Al Bumrey rips a 2 run triple with 2 outs in the 9th inning to pace the Baltimore Orioles
- 3:01:21to a 6 to 5 triumph over the Minnesota Twins. Loser Mike Marshall now 8 and 6 making his
- 3:01:2638th appearance, walk Doug DeSantis and pinch hitter Ture Klaue to set the stage for Bumrey
- 3:01:32with a triple down the right field line to give reliever Don Stanhouse his 5th victory in 6 decisions.
- 3:01:38Tim Stoddard retired the final 2 batters after an RBI single in the 9th by Butch Weineger
- 3:01:45to record his 2nd save.
- 3:01:48And the road to Moscow for American athletes. Open today at San Antonio College in Walnut, California.
- 3:01:57More than 1300 Olympic hole pulls began competition, the national AAU Crack and Steal Championship.
- 3:02:04The AAU meet is the first major stepping stone to the 1980 games in Moscow.
- 3:02:09What is that?
- 3:02:39The AAU has 10 runs, 18 hits and 1 error.
- 3:02:43And Fred this may startle you but do you realize that the Royals have not received a single base on balls in this game?
- 3:02:52Do you realize that of the 18 hits, the Royals have 17 singles?
- 3:02:59And one home run, the home run the 3 run homer by Willie Wilson.
- 3:03:03So they're just crying for the extra base hit, a double, a triple, a home run.
- 3:03:09It's tough to do it when you just single, single, single the other team to death.
- 3:03:13That's what they've done here in the 9th.
- 3:03:15Willie Wilson started it, he's single, Ben Quirk's single, Otis Weinhardt is center,
- 3:03:20Cowan's single, Scott's single, then a sacrifice fly,
- 3:03:27John Watson an infield single, Frank White a single, and here is UL Washington batting for the first time.
- 3:03:37The tying run at second, the lead run at first, the Royals trailed after 4 innings by the score of 11 to 2.
- 3:03:47And now here in the top of the 9th with 2 on and 2 out, it is 11 to 10, Brewers.
- 3:03:53Washington is in a switch hitter on the left side.
- 3:04:02Bill Caps is still getting ready, here's the stretch and now he steps off the rubber.
- 3:04:06We're ready to go, Watson at second, Frank White at first, here's the pitch, outside all run.
- 3:04:26One ball and no strike.
- 3:04:28A base hit to tie it, an extra base hit to give the Royals the lead.
- 3:04:33Base hit left field, here comes Lawson, he's going to try to score, just go get him, safe.
- 3:04:39The game is tied, I don't believe it.
- 3:04:44UL Washington hits the Royals 18th single of the night.
- 3:04:49And here's the man who started it, Willie Wilson.
- 3:04:53A five run inning, it was 11 to 6 when this inning started.
- 3:05:04And here is Willie Wilson.
- 3:05:08Willie, 3 out of 5 tonight.
- 3:05:13The Royals have risen from the ashes.
- 3:05:24Washington first and second, here's the pitch.
- 3:05:28Lying down the left field line, Ogilvy chasing it,
- 3:05:30they have all went in the corner, White scores,
- 3:05:33Washington is score, look at Willie, he's around second, he's on his way to third,
- 3:05:38he's around fourth, here he comes, he is safe.
- 3:05:45And inside the park home run.
- 3:05:57Good Heaven.
- 3:05:59I wish you could hear the crowd here at County Stadium.
- 3:06:08They are just done.
- 3:06:11And wide off, the Royals have 8 in the ninth,
- 3:06:15Willie Wilson has his second home run of the game,
- 3:06:18his fourth home run of the year, and his third inside the park home run,
- 3:06:22a little slicing, looping drive down the left field line.
- 3:06:25Jamie Clurton, ripped one into right center field, Garmin Thomas can't get it.
- 3:06:30And it bounces into the stands, it will be a ground rule double.
- 3:06:36Willie, don't wake me up just now, I'm having the most pleasant dream.
- 3:06:39I was having a nightmare a while ago and I've got that sort of down,
- 3:06:42I'm having this real good dream, so don't disturb me for a while.
- 3:06:47I don't believe it.
- 3:06:48I'll tell you Fred, the nightmare right now belongs to
- 3:06:52the Milwaukee Brewers manager George Bamford.
- 3:06:55Paul Mitchell, in relief of Mike Caldwell,
- 3:06:59failed into this inning having retired 6 straight men and 2 innings at work.
- 3:07:06And all of a sudden you talk about everything collapsing around you.
- 3:07:11His name is Otis.
- 3:07:15There's a Willie Wilson, has 6 RBI's in his game now.
- 3:07:18Two singles, two home runs.
- 3:07:32Amos Otis, right hand batter.
- 3:07:35Here's the pitch.
- 3:07:37Going outside, ball one.
- 3:07:39Amos, 2 out of 5.
- 3:07:41He is one of only two men to make out here in the inning.
- 3:07:47And he hit a line shot right at center fielder, Gorman Thomas.
- 3:07:50The other out was the sacrifice fly off the bat of LaTocque.
- 3:07:53Breaking ball for a strike.
- 3:07:5514 to 11 Royals, 21 hits.
- 3:07:58The Royals have affected some tremendous comebacks in just the last 2 weeks.
- 3:08:10Amos is swinging a miss.
- 3:08:13And this one, with Darrell Porter and George Brett out of the lineup.
- 3:08:18The Royals trailed remember, by the score of 11 to 2.
- 3:08:24It is now Royals 14, Brewers 11.
- 3:08:35Brett and Porter left after 5 innings.
- 3:08:39One ball, two strikes on Otis.
- 3:08:41Jamie Quirk had second.
- 3:08:42Jamie is 3 out of 3 since coming in.
- 3:08:45Otis takes a little bit outside.
- 3:08:54An incredible comeback.
- 3:09:00Here's the pitch.
- 3:09:02Line shot center fielder, Thomas makes the catch.
- 3:09:06Otis made 2 of the 3 outs and both were line shots to center fielder.
- 3:09:10What an inning.
- 3:09:128 runs, 9 hits.
- 3:09:16There were no errors.
- 3:09:19There was a man left.
- 3:09:21And we go to the bottom of the ninth and score the Royals 14 to Milwaukee 11.
- 3:09:28Well the Orioles are very happy about this.
- 3:09:30They have already won in the ninth inning against their opponents.
- 3:09:37They defeated Minnesota.
- 3:09:40The Red Sox lost.
- 3:09:42They lost to the Chicago White Sox 8 to 5.
- 3:09:45So this would put the Brewers 7 back.
- 3:09:48The Orioles and the American League East, the Yankees have already lost.
- 3:09:51They're 7 and a half.
- 3:09:52They pick up another game with the Tigers who are 8 and a half.
- 3:09:54They've worked out pretty well.
- 3:09:56If Kansas City can hold off Milwaukee the whole night.
- 3:10:00But a game like this with scores more like football, anything again could happen.
- 3:10:05Let's check some more scores.
- 3:10:07All the other games in the American League are over.
- 3:10:10National League after 4 and a half.
- 3:10:12San Francisco leads St. Louis 2 to 1.
- 3:10:14After 4, Pittsburgh 1, Los Angeles nothing.
- 3:10:16And after 3 and a half, no score between Chicago and San Diego.
- 3:10:20But Briggs has done a home run for the Pond Rays in the fourth one on his fifth of the year.
- 3:10:24So San Diego leads in the home four still batting by at least 2-0.
- 3:10:28More on the trade we mentioned earlier between the Yankees and Pond Rays.
- 3:10:31New York traded veteran outfielder Jay Johnstone.
- 3:10:34San Diego leads in the home four still batting by at least 2-0.
- 3:10:36San Diego Pond Rays for minor league right-hander Dave Warmeister.
- 3:10:41In position, the Yankees dealt catcher D.H. Cliff Johnson to Cleveland for reliever Don Hood.
- 3:10:46Johnson, a backup catcher, tangled with Rich Gossage in a clubhouse incident in mid-April.
- 3:10:51And left Gossage with an injured hand.
- 3:10:53Gossage ran a 2.01 earn run average in 63 appearances with 27 saves last year.
- 3:10:59Has been on the disabled list since.
- 3:11:06We go to the bottom of the ninth, 14-11 in favor of the Royals.
- 3:11:10The Royals got eight runs in the top of the ninth.
- 3:11:14Marty Patton, a former Brewer, will be the new pitcher.
- 3:11:19Jamie Clerk is catching. He has been for four innings now.
- 3:11:23George Scott, who's been playing at first, will play third.
- 3:11:28He has played third. In fact, when he came up to the Boston Red Sox, he did play third base.
- 3:11:35Pete LeCocque is at first. Washington is short. White is second.
- 3:11:40The outfield remains Wilson in left. Otis in center. Collins in right.
- 3:11:47The Royals, I just think it's incredible, have not received one single base on balls in this game.
- 3:11:57So they have had to manufacture their 14 runs with 21 hits.
- 3:12:03The Brewers have made one error, but that's giving very little away.
- 3:12:07Listen to this. The Royals have 18 singles, one double and two home runs.
- 3:12:14And the two home runs, both hit by Willie Wilson, both three run home runs.
- 3:12:21The first one left the stadium at the left field wall, his first outside the park home run.
- 3:12:28And then his 10th inning home run was an inside the park home run, a little flare down the left field line,
- 3:12:35which rolled away from Polkhovic in the corner.
- 3:12:38And I wish you could have seen Willie Wilson circling the bases.
- 3:12:41You know, we thought he went around the bases fast when he hit that inside the park home run against the Yankees last Saturday afternoon.
- 3:12:49Well, he did. But you should have seen him go around the bases on this one tonight.
- 3:13:00Well, it ain't over yet. We know that, don't we?
- 3:13:04Fourteen to 11 Royals, Marty Patton, will face the top of the batting order.
- 3:13:10And that means Molitor, who's four out of five, Cecil Cooper, who's two out of five,
- 3:13:16and Sal Bando, who's two out of four with a three run over.
- 3:13:24I don't think I mentioned the fact that Willie gets Kelly Gitt certificate.
- 3:13:28You knew that.
- 3:13:32He gets it twice tonight.
- 3:13:36Here we go, Marty Patton pitches. Molitor takes a breaking ball first strike.
- 3:13:46Most of the fans departed in the eighth inning.
- 3:13:52Here's the pitch. But it's followed by Molitor. They're trying to take advantage of George Scott.
- 3:13:58The big count now is O and two. Scott at third, LaCocca at first, Jamie Clark the catcher.
- 3:14:07The Brewers have had just two hits since the fourth inning.
- 3:14:14They got three runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third, five in the fourth,
- 3:14:19and they thought left the Royals for dead.
- 3:14:22Fly ball, right field, Al Collins can't find it. Now he makes the catch.
- 3:14:27Having problems with the light.
- 3:14:32And finally he found the ball and made the catch.
- 3:14:39What a way here's Cecil Cooper.
- 3:14:46He's in the five, he's strangled in the first and again in the sixth.
- 3:14:58Signal given by Jamie Clark. Marty nods yes, in the motion, here's the pitch.
- 3:15:04Breaking stuff is low, one ball no strike.
- 3:15:13Don't forget the job done by Stephen Gorey.
- 3:15:18Outside corner well drawn, one and one.
- 3:15:21Mingo worked his seventh and eighth innings allowing no hits, no runs, just one base runner.
- 3:15:26The Royals made two good plays back of him in the eighth, one by Todd Cruz, the one by Washington,
- 3:15:31the other by Collins. Here's the one-one pitch.
- 3:15:34But out in front of the plate, Jamie Clark up with the ball to the floor.
- 3:15:37It's in time, well done by James.
- 3:15:42And that is not an easy play.
- 3:15:48Jamie Clark is not at all used to that catcher's glove.
- 3:15:55And he made a fine throw to Pete LeCocque.
- 3:15:58Cooper can run and he was batting from the left side.
- 3:16:01Here's Bando, he's two out of four, a three run homer in the first.
- 3:16:11And he's batting, breaking ball, strike, going one to Bando.
- 3:16:21Signal given, here's the one pitch.
- 3:16:25Inside corner with a slider, strike two, it's nothing and do.
- 3:16:30Remember how the Royals shot the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night when they scored the tying run,
- 3:16:38a home run by Braun. There's a drive in the right center field, Collins to his right calling for it.
- 3:16:44And the Royals have incredibly won the game, an incredible victory.
- 3:16:49They trailed after four, 11 to two, they win 14 to 11, they score eight in the ninth.
- 3:16:57They did it without Brett and Porter who were removed from the game after five innings.
- 3:17:03And the Royals needless to say, a giddy bunch. I was going to say happy.
- 3:17:09They're happy but they have to be almost giddy as they go to the clubhouse.
- 3:17:13Final score again, Royals 14, Milwaukee 11 back in a minute.
- 3:17:18Let's check the West Coast games now. They're almost caught up with us in the national league after five innings now.
- 3:17:27Pirates lead the Dodgers one to nothing, four and a half, San Diego two and Chicago nothing.
- 3:17:37The other game on the West Coast, St. Louis and San Francisco four and a half, the Giants ahead of St. Louis two to one again.
- 3:17:43Willie McCovey has hit his 514th career home run. It came in the fourth, nobody on his ninth of the year.
- 3:17:51Rounding them up again in the national league, the finals, Houston two, Montreal one, the New York Mets beat Atlanta by a score of two to one.
- 3:18:00It was 1996, Philadelphia three in the American league, Chicago beat Boston eight to five, Baltimore six, Minnesota five, Texas outscored the New York Yankees nine to five.
- 3:18:11Home runs of the game, Oliver, Texas fifth one on his ninth of the year, Panella Yankees eight one on his seventh of the season.
- 3:18:20Seattle blank Oakland six to nothing, Cleveland defeated Seattle 13 to three and California knows that Detroit eight to seven, second straight loss in as many tries for the then-goes new skipper, Sparky Anderson.
- 3:18:34And this game of course, the heartbreaker for the home team, Milwaukee after leading 11 to two after four innings of play were beaten by three, 14 to 11.
- 3:18:44Let's go back for a minute or so for the wrap up as we return to County Stadium, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
- 3:18:53You may watch a lot more baseball before you see an incredible comeback like the one tonight.
- 3:19:00Just a miraculous, incredible, you think of a lot of adjie gives that you might apply to it.
- 3:19:06All in all, eight runs in the night that up to a 14 to 11 victory, the Royals failed as we said after four with a score of 11 to two.
- 3:19:15And the Brewers that left them for dead rise from the ashes they did.
- 3:19:20The Brewers weren't the only ones that left them for dead. I'm sitting here, I've seen it, I believe it but I haven't even begun to think any of that.
- 3:19:27It's everything that you said it was, boy a couple of thoughts about this ball clip.
- 3:19:32First of all about their integrity and their courage. It's been so easy to quit tonight.
- 3:19:37I've read those letters to the editor and I've heard those phone calls with the station complaining about the Royals.
- 3:19:41I really don't care to read or hear any more about them right now.
- 3:19:44And nobody knows what's going to happen from this point on but if there is to be a turning point in the season the Royals have been kind of lolling along.
