- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Jim Mora on the Yukon Football Coaches
- 0:02Speaker 1: Show Mike Crispino with Jim and Rice coming in. They're
- 0:06Speaker 1: two and five. They haven't won a game yet away.
- 0:10Speaker 1: They had some close games recently, though. They just went
- 0:13Speaker 1: to Tulane, which has got a good club, lost twenty
- 0:16Speaker 1: four to ten. They finish up Rice does with the
- 0:18Speaker 1: home games with Navy and USF that ain't going to
- 0:21Speaker 1: be easy, and road trips to Memphis and UAB this
- 0:24Speaker 1: homestand that Yukon's on. Jim, you got two more here
- 0:28Speaker 1: at home. Excuse me, do you feel like, I don't
- 0:32Speaker 1: want to say pressure, that's not really a great word,
- 0:34Speaker 1: but the pressure to get it done now while you're home,
- 0:36Speaker 1: knowing you got three in a row on the road
- 0:38Speaker 1: to wrap the schedule.
- 0:40Speaker 2: No, we don't feel pressure. We feel fortunate that we
- 0:47Speaker 2: get to come back home and play at the rent
- 0:50Speaker 2: where we love to play. So yeah, I don't think
- 0:54Speaker 2: we feel any pressure, you know, Like Mike, I think
- 0:56Speaker 2: it's all about that, you know, one game mentality, Like
- 0:58Speaker 2: our guys aren't thinking, hey, we only have two more
- 1:00Speaker 2: home games. They're thinking about a really good Rice football
- 1:03Speaker 2: team is coming in Saturday at three thirty. And how
- 1:06Speaker 2: do we get ourselves ready to play the best game
- 1:08Speaker 2: we can play? Thankfully, it's at home. You know. We
- 1:14Speaker 2: get our crowd, we get our locker room, we get
- 1:16Speaker 2: our bus drivers, we get you know, we don't have
- 1:19Speaker 2: to get on a plane. No, it's a it's a
- 1:22Speaker 2: good feeling. And then we'll worry about those other ones
- 1:25Speaker 2: when we get to him. But the most important thing
- 1:26Speaker 2: for us to do is just put off our full
- 1:29Speaker 2: focus on preparing to play a really good Rice football team.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Yeah, their quarterback? Where's number thirteen?
- 1:35Speaker 2: E J? Warner?
- 1:37Speaker 1: That's as soon as I saw that name, I'm like,
- 1:39Speaker 1: wait a minute. He played for Temple, didn't he? Yes,
- 1:42Speaker 1: he did. He was fifth in the FBS a year ago.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I think through for over three hundred yards. And he's
- 1:48Speaker 1: a son of Kurt Warner, who was a fabulous NFL player,
- 1:52Speaker 1: you know, Super Bowl champ played with the Giants two
- 1:55Speaker 1: sixty accuracy throwing for ten touchdowns. What have you seen
- 2:01Speaker 1: of him as you looked at him? And what the
- 2:03Speaker 1: kind of challenge he's going to present.
- 2:05Speaker 2: We're pretty familiar with Ej. You know, we recruited him.
- 2:09Speaker 2: You know, I've been fortunate to play against Kirk and
- 2:14Speaker 2: work with him at NFL Network and consider him a
- 2:16Speaker 2: friend and known him well for a long long time.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And the apple hadn't fallen too far from the tree.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You're talking about a guy who has a you know,
- 2:25Speaker 2: his dad was known for his quick release and his
- 2:28Speaker 2: great ability to read defenses and make quick decisions. And
- 2:30Speaker 2: you see the same thing with EJ. He throws with accuracy.
- 2:36Speaker 2: He's just got great football IQ. He got roughed up
- 2:40Speaker 2: a little bit in the second half against Tulane. You know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: they played him really well in the first half and
- 2:48Speaker 2: then the second half. You know, EJ took a couple
- 2:50Speaker 2: of hits, but he's a tough I mean, there's a
- 2:53Speaker 2: there's a couple of hits on film you go, gosh, dang,
- 2:55Speaker 2: is he going to get up? And he pops up
- 2:57Speaker 2: and he's on to the next play. I really have
- 3:00Speaker 2: great respect for EJ and the way he plays the
- 3:02Speaker 2: game and his toughness and his mindset and his intelligence
- 3:06Speaker 2: and and you know, he's a he's a really really
- 3:10Speaker 2: good football player. He's you know, his dad obviously had
- 3:14Speaker 2: an influence on him.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and then when you're when your dad's Kurt Warner.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I'm sure he's imparting some the important knowledge, that's for sure.
- 3:23Speaker 1: They're running back Dean Connors. He wears number zero. Interesting
- 3:27Speaker 1: guy to me, carried at seventy four times this year,
- 3:30Speaker 1: over six and a half yards per He's got six touchdowns.
- 3:34Speaker 1: But the other thing, Jim forty one catches out of
- 3:37Speaker 1: the backfield. I was stunned when I saw that. That's
- 3:40Speaker 1: a lot of catches for a running back, isn't it.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Well yeah, I mean, but he's you know, he's so versatile.
- 3:47Speaker 2: The thing that you know, really grabs your attention is
- 3:50Speaker 2: his speed. And I said this about him last year,
- 3:53Speaker 2: you know, because he played played there last year. Is
- 3:55Speaker 2: that he the way he moves, the way he runs,
- 3:59Speaker 2: the way he catches, is he reminds you of Christian
- 4:02Speaker 2: McCaffrey very much. Me. He reminds me of Christian McCaffrey.
- 4:06Speaker 2: You know, uh, they they run very similarly and they
- 4:09Speaker 2: have the same skill set. I guy, you know the
- 4:12Speaker 2: guy last year, I was like, oh my goodness, this
- 4:14Speaker 2: guy is really a good football player. And you know,
- 4:16Speaker 2: you said it that the number of carries and the
- 4:18Speaker 2: success he's had, you know, over six yards of carry
- 4:20Speaker 2: but then you combine that with the catches out of
- 4:22Speaker 2: the backfield. I mean, he's a big time weapon for them.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know on the on the on the
- 4:28Speaker 1: wide out area for them. Matt Sykes is a guy
- 4:32Speaker 1: that transferred from UCLA. He's six ' four too ten,
- 4:36Speaker 1: He's got thirty eight catches. I mean his dad was
- 4:40Speaker 1: a was a basketball player at air Force, So I
- 4:42Speaker 1: guess that's where the hype comes from. I think. But anyway,
- 4:45Speaker 1: six ' four, that's a little unusual. You don't see
- 4:48Speaker 1: a lot of wide outs at six ' four on
- 4:50Speaker 1: the college level, do you.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Well, six three six four isn't tall. You know, Matt,
- 4:57Speaker 2: he's a physical guy and he can throw you know,
- 5:00Speaker 2: can throw it up high and he can go get her.
- 5:01Speaker 2: He's got really great hands and he finds the openings.
- 5:04Speaker 2: He can beat man coverage with his size. He's a
- 5:09Speaker 2: good football player. You know, they're they're a good team.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You know they've got other weapons as well. But uh uh,
- 5:18Speaker 2: you know what we have to do is we have
- 5:20Speaker 2: to we have to play discipline football on defense. We
- 5:25Speaker 2: have to be trusting on defense that our that our
- 5:28Speaker 2: teammates is going to be doing what he's supposed to
- 5:30Speaker 2: do and be where he's supposed to be. And then
- 5:32Speaker 2: we got to be able to pull the trigger and
- 5:34Speaker 2: do what we're supposed to do. And when we get
- 5:35Speaker 2: in trouble on defense, it's because we freelance or we
- 5:40Speaker 2: don't play with enough effort. And so those are the
- 5:43Speaker 2: things that we've got to correct, regardless of who we're playing,
- 5:45Speaker 2: you know, whether we're playing uh, the greatest team that
- 5:50Speaker 2: ever played, or we're playing you know out here on
- 5:53Speaker 2: the practice field, we've got to play a certain way
- 5:55Speaker 2: to a certain standard. And if we do that, then
- 5:57Speaker 2: we then we have a chance to have success. If
- 5:59Speaker 2: we don't do that, we're going to create problems for ourselves.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, Cam Chadwick got back on the field. A great
- 6:05Speaker 1: interception by him. How important was it to get him
- 6:09Speaker 1: back there in the secondary of this last weekend, Well,
- 6:12Speaker 1: it was.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Really important because Jordan Wright was out. I don't know
- 6:15Speaker 2: if people who haven't talked about that, but Jordan, you know,
- 6:17Speaker 2: who had to touchdown against Temple, sprained his ankle and
- 6:19Speaker 2: practice last week and won available for the game. So
- 6:22Speaker 2: being able to have Cam back there and playing well,
- 6:24Speaker 2: and then Malcolm Bell came in and you know, played really,
- 6:27Speaker 2: really well. You know, we were lucky that Cam was back.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Cam's going to be a really good football player for US.
- 6:33Speaker 2: He's learning, he's growing every week, he's gaining confidence. That
- 6:37Speaker 2: was a heck of a playmate on the interception, and
- 6:40Speaker 2: you know, I'm just excited for the improvement he's making.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I'm excited to get Jordan back, and it was great
- 6:45Speaker 2: to see Malcolm go out there and really play well.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's good to have depth in that secondary, that's
- 6:50Speaker 1: for sure. Jim Mora wetherus a youek on Football Coaches Show.
- 6:53Speaker 1: We'll be back in just a moment on liar Field
