- 0:05Hello and welcome to a special bonus episode
- 0:08of Abby the podcast lady I am so glad that you
- 0:11could join me today Usually we release episodes
- 0:13on the first and third Thursday of the month
- 0:15But as I'm recording this it is actually Black
- 0:18Friday the day after Thanksgiving and I was poking
- 0:21around the internet and I was Looking at a few
- 0:23things that I've had in my shopping carts. There
- 0:26is a lot of Products that I use for podcasting
- 0:29that I end up having to buy more of as I use
- 0:31them and need them more and have to Replace them
- 0:33and just want to add extra things to my setup
- 0:35So it's just kind of poking through some things
- 0:37that I've had in my cart and on the back burner
- 0:39and I was kind of thinking to myself, you know,
- 0:42if I was a beginner podcaster, what kind of thing
- 0:45should I be shopping for on Black Friday and
- 0:47Cyber Monday or adding to a Christmas wish list
- 0:50or, you know, just kind of keeping an eye on
- 0:51as we go about this holiday season, because usually
- 0:53there's some pretty good deals on certain items.
- 0:56So I thought, you know, why don't I share my
- 0:58knowledge of starting a podcast with everyone
- 1:00else? Because that's the whole point of this
- 1:02show. So I wanted to show you a few things that
- 1:05I am scoping out this Black Friday for my podcasting
- 1:08journey that I hope can help you on your podcasting
- 1:10journey as well. If you are just listening to
- 1:12the audio version of this show, be sure you check
- 1:15out the video version as well because I actually
- 1:17will be sharing my screen to show you certain
- 1:19products on certain websites to help you make
- 1:21the best decision for you to start your own podcast.
- 1:24If I was a beginner podcaster, the first thing
- 1:27that I would want to make sure I purchased is
- 1:29a microphone. And my microphone recommendation
- 1:32is always, always, always going to be the Rode
- 1:35PodMic USB. I am a huge fan of this microphone.
- 1:39I'm actually using it to record this podcast
- 1:41right now. What I love about this microphone
- 1:43is it is so dang versatile. Like I'm using it
- 1:47right now plugged into my MacBook Pro via USB
- 1:50-C. I've used it before where I've plugged it
- 1:52into my cell phone via USB -C. It is so great
- 1:55because not only does it connect with a USB cable,
- 1:58it's also an XLR microphone too. So if you're
- 2:01using it to just with your laptop, you can just
- 2:03plug it right in. Or if you're using it with
- 2:05a soundboard, something like the Zoom Pod Track
- 2:07P4, or I use a Rodecaster Pro, the first generation
- 2:11of them, you can connect it via XLR cable as
- 2:14well. What's great about getting this microphone
- 2:16as a starter microphone is that it can grow with
- 2:19you. So whether you're just starting with you,
- 2:21this microphone in your cell phone or you, this
- 2:24microphone and a small recording device with
- 2:26an XLR cable, it can kind of do everything. And
- 2:29I am not going to lie to you. I'm kind of rough
- 2:32on equipment. I try to be gentle with things
- 2:36that I'm just naturally just kind of rough with
- 2:39everything I own. And this thing has been through
- 2:41the wringer. I have accidentally dropped this
- 2:44microphone. It has been thrown in backpacks.
- 2:46It is thrown in bags and just brought everywhere.
- 2:51It's really stood the test of time. If I take
- 2:53the microphone cover off on it right now, you'll
- 2:55see a few dents and dings in it, but it still
- 2:58sounds great. It still works great. I love that
- 3:00your headphones can plug into the back of it
- 3:02so you can monitor your audio through this microphone.
- 3:05It is a great piece of starter equipment. If
- 3:08you're just looking to get into podcasting or
- 3:10have a great piece of audio gear, I cannot recommend
- 3:13the Rode PodMic USB enough. This thing is awesome.
- 3:16Plus it also comes in white on Amazon. As I'm
- 3:18showing you, you will pay a little bit more to
- 3:20buy it in white but I like buying microphone
- 3:23covers for mine. I have like five different colors
- 3:25of mic covers for my Rode pod mics. And I just
- 3:28think it's a great piece of audio equipment that
- 3:29you can get a lot of mileage out of, especially
- 3:31if you're just getting started in podcasting.
- 3:33So definitely keep an eye out for deals on the
- 3:35Rode pod mic USB this holiday season. Now, if
- 3:38you're looking to do a multi -person interview
- 3:42or co -hosted style podcast in the new year,
- 3:46I would highly recommend looking at the Rode
- 3:48Wireless Go Gen 3. microphones. You might be
- 3:51thinking, well, I have those like teeny tiny
- 3:53little like plug into the phone clip on microphones.
- 3:56Those work fine, too. But if you want something
- 3:58that is going to be a truly great piece of audio
- 4:01gear that's going to last you a good long while
- 4:04and be able to grow with you, I think that the
- 4:06Rode Wireless Go series is a great place to start.
- 4:10Actually, let me show you something. Sitting
- 4:12right next to me. I actually have my rhod wireless
- 4:14go gen 2 in their charging case I never leave
- 4:17home without these microphones. I absolutely
- 4:19love these things I have the second generation
- 4:22which I think only came in the color black. I'm
- 4:25not gonna lie to you I have been looking at upgrading
- 4:27to the wireless go gen 3 which is one that you
- 4:30see on the screen right now purely because they
- 4:32come in this color lilac purple I love this color
- 4:35everything that I can have in that color. I have
- 4:38in that color like literally my computer mouse
- 4:40is that lilac color. My mouse pad is that color.
- 4:43Everything I can get in this color purple is
- 4:45great. And what's awesome is that if you have
- 4:47a signature color for say, you're starting a
- 4:50podcast for your business and your brand color
- 4:52is this aqua blue. great, you can get that color
- 4:55microphone orange, pink, purple, red, this really
- 4:59cool like terracotta color. There's a lot of
- 5:01options with the Rode Wireless Go Gen 3. And
- 5:05I think that it'd be so fun to just match your
- 5:07brand's vibe with your microphones. And these
- 5:10microphones are truly great. And like I mentioned,
- 5:12they can grow with you. So I most often will
- 5:15take mine and I keep a little USB. cable in with
- 5:19it. Obviously it's purple. And you can plug it
- 5:21right into your phone and then you have a two
- 5:23microphone setup for out in the wild, on the
- 5:26go, interviewing people. I just use these to
- 5:28do a walking tour. For one of my clients, we
- 5:31recorded a podcast of her giving a walking tour
- 5:34of her new facility that she just opened. And
- 5:36these microphones sounded so good, so clean,
- 5:39so professional. And I just plugged it right
- 5:41into my cell phone. They also work great with
- 5:44cameras. I plug mine also into my Sony ZV -1
- 5:47and they work great for that as well. I'm a huge
- 5:50fan of the Rode Wireless Go microphones. That's
- 5:53not to say you have to buy these, but I think
- 5:56that there's something really great to look into
- 5:58and invest in, especially if this is something
- 6:00you want to be exploring long term or honestly
- 6:03dabble with these microphones for long form video.
- 6:06They work for short form too. So the Rode Wireless
- 6:09Go Gen 3 microphones. I think are a great thing
- 6:12to keep your eye on this holiday season, especially
- 6:15if you can maybe get a little discount on them
- 6:17somewhere. I know that there was a price drop
- 6:19on them in the past 90 days. They went down about
- 6:21$100. And I just think they're a great piece
- 6:24of equipment to pick up. So definitely look into
- 6:26those. Also, I should mention this podcast is
- 6:29not sponsored by Rode. I just am a big fan of
- 6:31their products. Now I want to get into some software
- 6:35things that you could be looking into this Black
- 6:38Friday. There's some really great software deals
- 6:40going on right now. We're going to start with
- 6:42the one that we're actually recording on right
- 6:44this minute, and that is riverside .com. They
- 6:46have a Black Friday deal going on right now.
- 6:4835 % off their annual plans for new users with
- 6:51a special promo code that is BF2025. And that
- 6:55deal is going on for a couple more days now.
- 6:57So I think like through the end of This Thanksgiving
- 7:00weekend is when you can take advantage of that
- 7:02Black Friday deal. I've been a Riverside user
- 7:05for... It's been over two years now, I think.
- 7:08I've been a part of the Riverside community for
- 7:10a while. And it has been so amazing to watch
- 7:13this company grow. And the thought and intention
- 7:16they put into every single update they make behind
- 7:19the scenes and making this service better and
- 7:21better and better. I love it for remote recordings.
- 7:24I do a lot of my interviews over Riverside. It's
- 7:27just so seamless. And then the editing process
- 7:30afterwards is great too. It's really beginner
- 7:32friendly. It's super simple, super straightforward.
- 7:36And there's a lot of great tutorials on YouTube
- 7:38on how to use it as well. So I cannot recommend
- 7:41Riverside enough, especially for a beginner podcaster.
- 7:44This is a great platform to start on. There's
- 7:46a free version as well. You can do a lot of editing.
- 7:49Obviously, you'll get the watermarks with that.
- 7:51But I think the paid version is awesome. And
- 7:54if you can score a deal on that annual plan to
- 7:56get started with Riverside in 2026 to get your
- 7:59podcast going, I think it's definitely worth
- 8:01looking into. Another software that I like to
- 8:04use is Descript and I know that Riverside and
- 8:07Descript are very similar. They have a lot of
- 8:08the same like functionality, but I also think
- 8:10it's very different in what you're trying to
- 8:14accomplish on the back end. I really like Riverside
- 8:16for recording and editing simple interviews and
- 8:20just kind of like single camera shots or screen
- 8:22recording like this. I think Riverside is the
- 8:24way to go for that. But for Descript, I think
- 8:26that their transcript based editing is I wouldn't
- 8:31say easier, but I'd say more thorough and more
- 8:33detailed. And I think that there's a lot more
- 8:35functionality for like multi -cam in Descript.
- 8:38So if you're shooting a multi -cam podcast, I
- 8:40think Descript is a great editing software to
- 8:43use for that. That's what I do a lot of my multi
- 8:45-cam edits for clients on. And I really like
- 8:47that you can... manipulate the camera angles
- 8:51a little bit more than you can in Riverside.
- 8:52So if you're doing more of that kind of production,
- 8:55I think that's the way to go for that. And there's
- 8:57a great deal going on for Black Friday for Descript
- 8:59as well. You can get a thousand AI credits and
- 9:0210 media hours for free. And they have a bunch
- 9:05of different plans that are pretty affordable
- 9:07from beginning to more business people that are
- 9:10running podcasts full -time like I am. I started
- 9:13at the hobbyist one and it worked great until
- 9:15I just needed to kind of keep upgrading to the
- 9:17business plan, which I just... up to last week.
- 9:21So I had a couple of really big files that needed
- 9:23uploading. You could only do it with the business
- 9:25one. We're talking like big files. So just something
- 9:28to look into. There's a lot of great options.
- 9:30And I think that Descript is a great place to
- 9:33kind of level up to when you're on your podcast
- 9:36journey. Maybe you started on Riverside, you're
- 9:38looking to up to a couple more camera angles
- 9:41in the new year. I think Descript would be a
- 9:43great place to kind of shift your energy to if
- 9:45that's something you're into. The next piece
- 9:47of software I want to show you, they're not running
- 9:48a Black Friday deal to my knowledge or at least
- 9:51I haven't seen anything when I was looking this
- 9:52up online earlier, but that is Adobe Podcast.
- 9:56I started my audio journey on Adobe back in college.
- 10:00I went to college 12 years ago, 10 years, 2014,
- 10:06almost 12 years ago. It was a while ago, but
- 10:09I learned how to edit audio on Adobe. And I am
- 10:12a huge fan of Adobe Audition. And Adobe Podcast
- 10:15is kind of like the beginner version of Adobe
- 10:18Audition, is how I view it anyway, because I
- 10:21feel like I was kind of thrown to the wolves
- 10:22when I had to learn Audition. It seemed very
- 10:24scary, but it's not once you actually learn it.
- 10:27But I actually had a college professor teaching
- 10:29me how to do it. This is a very beginner -friendly
- 10:31way to get some really good, clean audio for
- 10:34your podcast. If you're starting it in the new
- 10:36year or starting it from scratch with maybe not
- 10:39the best equipment or maybe it's just you and
- 10:41a cell phone and you want to clean it up and
- 10:43make it sound professional, Adobe Podcast can
- 10:45do just that. And they have some really great
- 10:48plans as well. Their free plan includes enhancing
- 10:50the speech and enhancing the audio. It's very
- 10:53like simple, basic. It gets the job done for
- 10:55what you might need it for as a beginner podcaster.
- 10:58Their premium plan includes audio processing
- 11:00for video. You can do bulk files. You can adjust
- 11:03things. There's a little more tweaking that can
- 11:05be done, obviously, because you're paying for
- 11:07the service. But I think it's well worth it.
- 11:09I'm a huge fan of Adobe, honestly, all their
- 11:12tools, but I really like Adobe Podcast. I think
- 11:14it is such an amazing tool. It has saved my butt
- 11:17and my client's butt. so many times with like
- 11:19corrupt files, just needing like tweaks or there's
- 11:21like a weird hum or a background noise or just
- 11:24taking that echo -y sound out of the room. I
- 11:26think Adobe Podcast is something everyone in
- 11:29the podcast industry should be using, even if
- 11:31it's just to quickly clean up something and send
- 11:33it out into the world. I think it's such a great
- 11:35tool and I would highly recommend looking into
- 11:38it. Like I said, I don't think they're doing
- 11:39any Black Friday deals. I haven't seen any Black
- 11:41Friday deals, but definitely poke around there
- 11:44and get familiar with Adobe Podcast because it
- 11:46is just... And then the last thing I want to
- 11:50touch on when it comes to Black Friday deals
- 11:52and shopping around for podcast gear and trying
- 11:54to figure out what you need to buy to get into
- 11:56this industry and get into your show and making
- 11:59it actually come out of your head and into the
- 12:01world. I just want you to know that you don't
- 12:03have to buy anything. Like you can use what is
- 12:06around you at any given moment. I tell everyone
- 12:08the best thing that they can start their podcast
- 12:10with is just their cell phone, just their cell
- 12:13phone, prop it up, record. clean up the audio
- 12:16in whatever free audio editing tool that you
- 12:18can find, and just put it out into the world.
- 12:21Share your message with the world. All it takes
- 12:23is hitting record and publishing it on some sort
- 12:26of platform. So you don't need to go and spend
- 12:28an arm and a leg this holiday season to get your
- 12:31podcast going if that's what does kind of kick
- 12:34you in the pants like buying new gym clothes
- 12:35to get to the gym. That's great. So be it. But
- 12:38you don't have to buy anything. You can use what
- 12:40is around you to make your show happen and make
- 12:42your podcast happen. And if you're curious about
- 12:44how to do that, I'd be more than happy to answer
- 12:47any question that you might have. abbygravesproductions
- 12:50.com is the best place to get a hold of me. Just
- 12:52fill out the contact form. It goes straight to
- 12:54my email. I would be happy to answer. any podcasting
- 12:57questions you may have to get your show started
- 12:59in 2026. I just want to see more podcasts getting
- 13:02put out into the world. I want to see you succeed
- 13:04with the dream show that you have in your head.
- 13:07Make it happen. And if you need recommendations
- 13:10or you need help along the way, that's what I'm
- 13:11here for. Thank you so much for checking out
- 13:13this bonus episode of Abby the Podcast Lady.
- 13:15We will catch you with our regularly scheduled
- 13:18episode coming out on the first Thursday of December.
