- 0:10Speaker 1: and Jeff hell is icy Pigs are flying. Sean Payton
- 0:16Speaker 1: has relinquished play calling duties. To Davis Webb, what's it
- 0:23Speaker 1: all going to look like? How is it all going
- 0:25Speaker 1: to go? What did you learn from Sean today?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Well, I have to tell you. And in the last
- 0:32Speaker 2: two weeks, I've spoken to many people who've either worked
- 0:34Speaker 2: for Sean, or played for Sean, or have been around him,
- 0:39Speaker 2: and I don't think I spoke to anyone who thought
- 0:44Speaker 2: he would do what he's done, which is after two decades,
- 0:49Speaker 2: over two decades as a play caller, with you know,
- 0:52Speaker 2: some success here and there, I would say, has decided
- 0:57Speaker 2: it's better if he doesn't call play. And I thought
- 1:01Speaker 2: it was an awful lot of self awareness. He talked
- 1:05Speaker 2: about the speed of the offense, you know, getting the
- 1:10Speaker 2: plays in and doing all the things they want to
- 1:13Speaker 2: do as a factor. I thought it was telling. He
- 1:16Speaker 2: said at mid season he had even given it some thought,
- 1:22Speaker 2: and then you know, thought about it more after the
- 1:26Speaker 2: season and you know, I know folks are probably going
- 1:30Speaker 2: to question this part of it, but he said it
- 1:33Speaker 2: it didn't have anything to do with trying to retain
- 1:36Speaker 2: Davis web That, but that he probably wouldn't have done
- 1:40Speaker 2: it at this point if it wasn't someone like Davis
- 1:44Speaker 2: Webb involved, If that makes sense. But I thought it
- 1:48Speaker 2: was a pretty when he said he was going to
- 1:50Speaker 2: look at everything after the season. You know, that wasn't
- 1:54Speaker 2: just some empty thing he said. You know that coaches
- 1:59Speaker 2: say after lose a playoff game. He made probably one
- 2:04Speaker 2: of the most surprising moves of his coaching career.
- 2:07Speaker 3: All Right, how'd we get here to this leg?
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 2:09Speaker 3: I know he gave some reasons, you know about slowing
- 2:12Speaker 3: down and driving the car and Ray and all that
- 2:14Speaker 3: towards the end of the year. But is any of
- 2:17Speaker 3: this will any of this maybe dialed down the temperature
- 2:20Speaker 3: between Peyton and Bow on game day?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Well, you know, I think it depends on, you know,
- 2:26Speaker 2: how this all goes. We still don't know how Sean's
- 2:31Speaker 2: gonna do, you know, on a headset, what he's not
- 2:33Speaker 2: calling place. You know, he said he's going to do
- 2:37Speaker 2: everything he can to support Davis web and that would
- 2:40Speaker 2: include on you know, sort of getting out of the
- 2:42Speaker 2: way on game day, but that you know there's gonna
- 2:45Speaker 2: be plays he calls during the game in all of
- 2:48Speaker 2: those things, so you know, it's not going to remove
- 2:51Speaker 2: Sean Payton or his intensity from the process. But I
- 2:55Speaker 2: think those the play clock pre snap things, I think
- 3:01Speaker 2: was part of the decision. I mean, he said today
- 3:04Speaker 2: the speed of the operation was one of the reasons
- 3:08Speaker 2: he's done this, and that he thinks this could help him,
- 3:13Speaker 2: you know, have a little bigger picture view of things
- 3:17Speaker 2: during the game, you know, the end of game situations,
- 3:19Speaker 2: all of those things. But you know, this certainly puts
- 3:24Speaker 2: Davis Webb as the voice in bo Nix's ear on
- 3:28Speaker 2: game day. And you know, again it's got to be
- 3:33Speaker 2: obvious that Peyton thinks this is best for bo Nicks,
- 3:38Speaker 2: Davis Webb, and maybe even him. At this point, what.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Do you expect Davis web How how is it going
- 3:47Speaker 1: to be different with him calling plays than it was
- 3:51Speaker 1: sewn Besides simply you know how promptly the play calls
- 3:54Speaker 1: are getting in.
- 3:56Speaker 2: But I don't know we know the answer to that yet. Now,
- 3:59Speaker 2: you know, it's Shawn's very adamant even before he did
- 4:02Speaker 2: this that you know, at no point is there just
- 4:06Speaker 2: one voice on the headset even you know, even with
- 4:09Speaker 2: him calling plays and that it's the Broncos offense. So
- 4:15Speaker 2: you know, we don't know quite yet what that might
- 4:19Speaker 2: mean with Davis web more involved on game day, but
- 4:22Speaker 2: you know, the sequencing of plays. You know, Davis Webb
- 4:25Speaker 2: may want to group different plays differently than Sean, would
- 4:32Speaker 2: you know, maybe they repeat more plays in games than
- 4:35Speaker 2: they they have with Sean. I mean, Sean doesn't have
- 4:38Speaker 2: a very high number of times where even if plays work,
- 4:43Speaker 2: that they repeat them a lot during games. You know.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I think that's something to watch. I think pre snap
- 4:49Speaker 2: motion is something to watch, you know. I think the
- 4:52Speaker 2: other thing that they've had to have looked at is
- 4:57Speaker 2: they have become a little pre and certain personnel groupings,
- 5:03Speaker 2: uh And I think that's something that would be directly
- 5:06Speaker 2: on Davis Webb's plate on game day now if he's
- 5:10Speaker 2: calling place. You know, there are some thought that when
- 5:14Speaker 2: Evan Ingram's in the game, that teams knew what was up,
- 5:17Speaker 2: and that the grouping that included Adam Trautman and little
- 5:21Speaker 2: Jordan Humphrey, that defenses knew what was up. When that
- 5:25Speaker 2: group is in the game, and I think those are
- 5:27Speaker 2: the kinds of things that WEB can address because frankly,
- 5:32Speaker 2: you know, what do opposing teams have to work off
- 5:35Speaker 2: of right now? You know they're gonna they're gonna try
- 5:38Speaker 2: and figure out what you're asking. How much of Sean
- 5:42Speaker 2: Payton will there be in Davis Webb's play calling? And
- 5:46Speaker 2: you know none of us know that yet. But I
- 5:48Speaker 2: think those are some items to watch in all of this.
- 5:52Speaker 3: All right, Again, there's a lot to learn and it's
- 5:54Speaker 3: gonna be kind of fascinating to see how this goes along.
- 5:57Speaker 3: So the tag gonna go to Breeze Hall that was
- 5:59Speaker 3: your top guy. If the Broncos were to sign a back,
- 6:02Speaker 3: who would be your top guy at that position? With
- 6:04Speaker 3: him likely off the table?
- 6:06Speaker 2: Well, honestly, Andy, I didn't think they could be in
- 6:09Speaker 2: that mix. Uh, with the amount of money that you know,
- 6:14Speaker 2: if you're going to pay it back that much, you
- 6:16Speaker 2: better be ready to give him more than twelve carries
- 6:18Speaker 2: a game, that type of thing. But uh, I've said,
- 6:22Speaker 2: I've asked, and I said with you guys, I've asked
- 6:26Speaker 2: that you know, uh, some running back coaches I respect
- 6:31Speaker 2: and and the names that keep coming up are gain
- 6:34Speaker 2: Well and and doubt l so. But they think, you know,
- 6:38Speaker 2: given this class, some of those guys are going to
- 6:41Speaker 2: get a little bigger money than than maybe the Broncos
- 6:46Speaker 2: want to invest in a in the other guy because
- 6:49Speaker 2: I think they still see I mean, George Peyton said
- 6:52Speaker 2: it today. Uh, they still see R. J. Harvey as
- 6:56Speaker 2: you know, a free down back with with a right future.
- 7:00Speaker 3: All right, hilarious, they're gonna jump in. I'm sorry, any
- 7:03Speaker 3: major headline we need to get out of I forgot
- 7:05Speaker 3: George Peyton talked because of all the Sean Payton stuff,
- 7:07Speaker 3: any major headline out of.
- 7:08Speaker 2: That, No, just that you know, he was asked about,
- 7:12Speaker 2: you know and impending his Yeah, and Sean Payton said,
- 7:19Speaker 2: actually said he had already gone to bat for him
- 7:22Speaker 2: with the Broncos that and they even said it needs
- 7:26Speaker 2: to get done, uh you know, something on that line.
- 7:30Speaker 2: But uh, you know, and they reiterated again they're they're
- 7:34Speaker 2: gonna be ready to spend in free agency, but they're
- 7:38Speaker 2: not gonna go bananas if they don't think it's the
- 7:41Speaker 2: right guy for them. So I think they'll be a
- 7:44Speaker 2: little more measured than people might expect. And they you know,
- 7:49Speaker 2: they like the receiver room. I know that's been a
- 7:51Speaker 2: popular thing for you know, Hey, they got to go
- 7:55Speaker 2: get this and that, but they keep you know, as
- 7:59Speaker 2: as often the case with teams, sometimes they like something
- 8:02Speaker 2: better than you know, the rest of the world maybe,
- 8:05Speaker 2: but they liked that receiver room and they both made
- 8:10Speaker 2: it pretty clear today.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Jeff Draft question. Your friend Mel Kiper put out his
- 8:15Speaker 1: latest mock draft today, and you've told us over and
- 8:19Speaker 1: over again, the strength of this board is on the
- 8:20Speaker 1: defensive side of the ball. And indeed Mel has got
- 8:24Speaker 1: Denver at number thirty, selecting Emmanuel McNeil Warren safety out
- 8:28Speaker 1: of Toledo. What would you think of a pick in
- 8:33Speaker 1: the secondary there a year after they picked somebody in
- 8:36Speaker 1: the secondary, and then he had a limited snapcount as
- 8:39Speaker 1: a rookie.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Well, I'd say, you know, it's you don't draft a
- 8:45Speaker 2: guy for his rookie year. You draft the guy for
- 8:47Speaker 2: what you think he will be. Now, that's a really
- 8:51Speaker 2: good player. He's a fun evaluation. You want to talk
- 8:54Speaker 2: about a guy who forces turnovers all over the place.
- 8:58Speaker 2: That guy forced nine fumble in his college career. And
- 9:02Speaker 2: you're not going to find many non pass rushers on
- 9:06Speaker 2: a draft board, who forced that many that many fumbles?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Uh so he he's a striker in the as a
- 9:15Speaker 2: tackler in the run game and can play in deep coverage.
- 9:18Speaker 2: He's tall and rangy type of player. You know, that's
- 9:23Speaker 2: one of those at that point, that's that's the best
- 9:25Speaker 2: player on the board. Type of player. Do they need
- 9:28Speaker 2: a safety? You know, probably not, but again and an
- 9:35Speaker 2: awful lot of their kicks in this draft, the best
- 9:37Speaker 2: players on the board are going to be defensive guys.
- 9:41Speaker 2: But I I if you know, if mel and I
- 9:44Speaker 2: were talking about a mock draft at that point, I
- 9:46Speaker 2: would have looked at an edge rusher too to see
- 9:50Speaker 2: what the grades were at that point, because George Payton
- 9:53Speaker 2: even said today, you know, you can never have enough
- 9:56Speaker 2: edge guys. So I think they're they're always on the
- 9:59Speaker 2: hunt for that. Uh but there would be some receivers
- 10:03Speaker 2: down there, you know, worthy of that pick as well.
- 10:06Speaker 2: And you know in the second and third round there
- 10:08Speaker 2: will be tight ends that are worthy of those picks
- 10:11Speaker 2: as well.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And by the way, before anybody goes knocking the idea
- 10:14Speaker 1: of a safety out of the mac for Denver, Quinnyon
- 10:18Speaker 1: Mitchell was a cornerback out of the MAC in fact,
- 10:21Speaker 1: out of Toledo, and that guy's pretty damn good, so you.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Can he's a really good player. In fact, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 2: I was talking to uh, you know some I know
- 10:32Speaker 2: some teams that have him as a top fifteen player
- 10:35Speaker 2: on the board. So uh again, you're you know, we
- 10:39Speaker 2: don't want to talk about it because it's not a
- 10:41Speaker 2: guy who's going to like score touchdowns. But uh, that's
- 10:45Speaker 2: that's a tremendously you know, value pick. And yeah, they
- 10:49Speaker 2: wouldn't need a safety per se. But uh, I think
- 10:54Speaker 2: in today's league, if you're talking to personnel guys, they're
- 10:57Speaker 2: always going to tell you you can't have enough guys
- 11:01Speaker 2: in the secondary who can play, because that's the quickest
- 11:05Speaker 2: way to bump a good team out of a Super
- 11:08Speaker 2: Bowl hunt is you don't have enough depth in your
- 11:11Speaker 2: secondary to cover you know, beyond a quarterback injury, the
- 11:16Speaker 2: next best one that will crush you is if you
- 11:20Speaker 2: can't play the coverage you want week to week.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it wins you football games and windsy championships. Hell,
- 11:25Speaker 1: look at the Seattle Seahawks. Jeff Legweld. Everybody ESPN he
- 11:28Speaker 1: is in Indianapolis at the combine. He is gathering the info,
- 11:32Speaker 1: the intel. He's scouting, he's watching, he's chatting, and he's
- 11:38Speaker 1: not getting into arguments with other reporters at the Starbucks.
- 11:41Speaker 1: He's Jeff like, at least not yet leggy. Excellent work
- 11:45Speaker 1: as always, Man, We'll talk to you later this week.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Thanks follows, We'll see you Landa
