- 0:23That's how it went
- 0:34what is going on everybody
- 0:35welcome to chopping it up

- 0:42promise new bumpers new
- 0:45backdrops um we'll get
- 0:47something appropriate for
- 0:48this show but I do like
- 0:50that song it's fine by me I
- 0:53always want to like groove
- 0:54a little bit when it's
- 0:54going but yeah so how's your week been
- 1:01Good.
- 1:02Yeah, what, it's Thursday?
- 1:03Time just flies right now
- 1:05with quarters ending.
- 1:08We have a lot of athletes
- 1:09who are prepping.
- 1:11The semis prep is always odd,
- 1:13especially with the calendar this year,
- 1:15because some teams have been prepping.
- 1:19they have longer some indies
- 1:21don't have as long now that
- 1:22their quarters is done
- 1:23depending on when their
- 1:24semis is so it's a lot of a
- 1:25lot of athletes are
- 1:27starting to get back in the
- 1:29gym after taking some time
- 1:30off quarters just a lot of
- 1:31moving parts plus logistics
- 1:33for semis and things like
- 1:35that but it's been good uh
- 1:38lex says you must be off
- 1:39today scott you're knocking
- 1:40out like 40 interviews
- 1:42Uh, I think it's 39, but close,
- 1:45close enough.
- 1:45Yeah.
- 1:46And I actually, I took yesterday,
- 1:47today and tomorrow off, uh,
- 1:49for mental health.
- 1:51Um,
- 1:52just one stressor I didn't need was my
- 1:54job.
- 1:55And so I took a couple of
- 1:57days off and then tomorrow
- 1:58we're heading to
- 1:59Pennsylvania for my mom's birthday.
- 2:01She turned 79 years old yesterday,
- 2:0379 years old.
- 2:05And, uh, go and check,
- 2:07see what she's doing and
- 2:09hang out with her for a weekend.
- 2:10So yeah.
- 2:12That's awesome.
- 2:13So yeah, got a lot done today.
- 2:16You've been busy.
- 2:16It was a productive day.
- 2:18Even got a workout squeezed
- 2:19in between the last two.
- 2:22Very nice.
- 2:22What'd you do?
- 2:24It's Cardio Thursday at Polaris.
- 2:27Love it.
- 2:28So every Thursday is just like super long,
- 2:32super cardio machines.
- 2:35So it started with a salt
- 2:37bike and four rounds of a
- 2:40salt bike and pushups.
- 2:43Okay.
- 2:44Then I went into like three
- 2:45rounds of double unders and pushups.
- 2:50Pull-ups like very like
- 2:53Murph testy kind of stuff.
- 2:56Um,
- 2:57and then it finished with farmer's
- 2:58carries and squats, air squats.
- 3:03I like it.
- 3:05So, yeah,
- 3:08what I like about those is it's
- 3:09an in and out workout in out,
- 3:11not a lot of warmup,
- 3:12not a lot of cool down.
- 3:14Yep.
- 3:15So yeah, you don't have to prep too much.
- 3:18Yeah.
- 3:20So Hattie's in the comments.
- 3:25Oh, hey, Hattie.
- 3:26And we'll see her in an hour and a half.
- 3:29Hour and a half.
- 3:29Two hours or so.
- 3:31So a lot of things have
- 3:33happened this week.
- 3:34We had an agenda.
- 3:35It's the same agenda we had
- 3:36last week that we never got to.
- 3:37Yeah.
- 3:40But I want to talk quickly
- 3:41about... I was on Coffee
- 3:43Pods and Wads yesterday.
- 3:44And...
- 3:47While I had a blast, right,
- 3:49and I knew kind of what
- 3:53Peter looks for in those
- 3:54games and I tried to pick
- 3:56the pieces of my argument
- 3:58that would get me the most points,
- 4:01I left feeling like there
- 4:03was more I wanted to say
- 4:04about each topic because
- 4:07you only have 60 seconds.
- 4:09So you got to figure out
- 4:10like what haymaker I'm
- 4:12going to throw for the 60
- 4:14seconds and then the rest
- 4:15of it's just kind of out there.
- 4:18And don't get me wrong, I had a blast.
- 4:20You looked like it.
- 4:22Had a blast, and I won.
- 4:23So, yeah, you got to love that.
- 4:28I don't think Harriet
- 4:30Roberts knew what she was
- 4:32in for on that show.
- 4:34Nope.
- 4:35Waking up at 5 a.m.
- 4:36and jumping on in Australia.
- 4:39Yeah.
- 4:41And Adam, I thought, came pretty hard,
- 4:44but he did not prepare properly.
- 4:46Yeah,
- 4:47it seemed like he just showed up and
- 4:49sent it.
- 4:51So the big thing I just
- 4:52wanted... I really do
- 4:54believe that... Because the
- 4:58first question was,
- 4:58how do we improve the
- 4:59quarterfinals for 2025?
- 5:02And my opinion is,
- 5:03it doesn't... We need to
- 5:06keep strict video review in the process.
- 5:10And I truly believe that too
- 5:11many people with bad
- 5:13movements have gotten
- 5:14through in years past.
- 5:17And we just keep forgetting
- 5:18about that when stuff like this happens.
- 5:23And the one thing I didn't
- 5:24get to say on the show is,
- 5:26if you feel wronged,
- 5:31why haven't you posted
- 5:32proof that you were wronged?
- 5:36I mean, that's something that has I mean,
- 5:39what an athlete that I know,
- 5:40who's good friends with my
- 5:42fiance brought up early in
- 5:45this whole thing.
- 5:46Where's the only one we saw
- 5:48drop a video pretty quickly was Velma.
- 5:51Right?
- 5:52And he just threw it out
- 5:53there like whatever.
- 5:54Yeah.
- 5:58I think it's a valid point.
- 6:00And
- 6:02It's really funny because in
- 6:04my Emily Rolfe interview today,
- 6:07she talked about how
- 6:08someone messed up her clock
- 6:10during that workout.
- 6:11So it actually happened twice.
- 6:13Her clock got messed up mid-workout.
- 6:15She had to redo it a couple times.
- 6:17She is normally a do the workout,
- 6:20get it posted, and be done.
- 6:22She does not review the video.
- 6:24But because that happened, she's like,
- 6:26well,
- 6:27I've got the video of the first half.
- 6:28I might as well take a look.
- 6:30And she didn't like her reps.
- 6:33So she made sure she came to
- 6:36full extension on the next rep.
- 6:39So thankfully someone
- 6:40stopped her clock midway through because,
- 6:46yeah, it may have cost her.
- 6:48I mean,
- 6:48we had a slightly similar thing
- 6:50with Jacob.
- 6:54I just wasn't paying enough attention.
- 6:57And the first time he did that,
- 6:58he only started with his
- 7:00back to the barbell on the first round.
- 7:04So then we had this huge discussion about,
- 7:08you know,
- 7:08are they going to watch that one?
- 7:09Are they going to penalize that one?
- 7:10This whole thing.
- 7:11And then I also really started, you know,
- 7:13we'd seen him do it.
- 7:14We had seen a couple other
- 7:16athletes on site do it.
- 7:17We were starting to get some
- 7:18scores from some people.
- 7:19So then the conversation also turned into,
- 7:22okay, we need a cleaner run and we,
- 7:24we can probably put up a
- 7:26significantly better score.
- 7:28So, yeah.
- 7:30Yeah.
- 7:31But again, super fun.
- 7:34Super glad I got invited on.
- 7:35And I get to do it again in
- 7:36a couple weeks.
- 7:38Nice.
- 7:39Heck yeah, man.
- 7:40As we move through the process.
- 7:42It is a fun show to watch.
- 7:43I try to catch it when I can.
- 7:45It is.
- 7:45I...
- 7:47To be fair,
- 7:47I catch that in Death By every
- 7:49week just to hear where
- 7:52people's thoughts and
- 7:52feelings are for our shows.
- 7:55Just so I can kind of hear a
- 7:57smattering of different topic thoughts.
- 8:00Yeah.
- 8:02And those are kind of the
- 8:02two hot topic shows.
- 8:04Right.
- 8:06I do like Peter's because it
- 8:07is so succinct.
- 8:10it's done in 30 minutes and, you know,
- 8:12so you can get in and out pretty good.
- 8:14Um, or death by,
- 8:15they can kind of go on for a while.
- 8:18Yeah.
- 8:19I also thoroughly enjoy
- 8:21Peter's sense of humor.
- 8:24He's hilarious.
- 8:25And I love it.
- 8:28So another thing happened on
- 8:30the way to this show is, um,
- 8:34Andrew Hiller,
- 8:37Broke news just about an
- 8:39hour and a half ago.
- 8:39Maybe a little longer.
- 8:42Yeah.
- 8:43I've been in interviews,
- 8:44so it's hard to like your time.
- 8:49That some of the semifinal
- 8:51workouts have been released.
- 8:53We have a leak.
- 8:54There's a leak in the boat.
- 8:56And it was confirmed by John
- 8:58Young that some coaches already had it.
- 9:02Oh.
- 9:03By the time Hiller posted it.
- 9:07So if you watch the Savant
- 9:09show from this afternoon,
- 9:11I listened to it on the way
- 9:14to the gym and on the way home.
- 9:17Yeah,
- 9:18John Young says that some of the
- 9:19coaches he knew have it.
- 9:22Dang, I need to get on that list.
- 9:24Well,
- 9:25and so that brings up a lot of questions.
- 9:27So first, I'm going to put up the...
- 9:31their workouts that were leaked.
- 9:36Um, there it is.
- 9:39Carolyn already is jumping in.
- 9:42Yeah.
- 9:42I'm not surprised either.
- 9:43Carolyn, uh,
- 9:44not surprised at all by the
- 9:46fact that some coaches had it.
- 9:48Not at all.
- 9:50That's a problem.
- 9:53Yeah.
- 9:54That's a major problem.
- 9:57One thing that was brought
- 9:58up by Brian spin on that
- 10:00show is that the circle has
- 10:02to be bigger than it used to be.
- 10:06Right.
- 10:07For semifinals,
- 10:08you've got people in Africa,
- 10:09got people in China,
- 10:11you got people in South
- 10:12America that have to know
- 10:14what the workouts are and
- 10:15the layouts to be able to get equipment,
- 10:19get floors ready, get venues ready.
- 10:23Yup.
- 10:25So that circle is way bigger.
- 10:27And we don't know if this
- 10:27leak came from HQ or from
- 10:32just some random guy
- 10:34putting a rig together in South America.
- 10:37Yeah.
- 10:39Friends of athletes test
- 10:40things can leak there.
- 10:43So, Carolyn,
- 10:43we are in a sport where
- 10:44friends of athletes test workouts.
- 10:46Things can leak there.
- 10:48Then all the regions know the workouts,
- 10:49so stuff can get leaked there too.
- 10:52Yeah.
- 10:55Yeah, I think there's a... I mean,
- 10:58I'm not surprised given the
- 10:59logistics of the semifinals
- 11:01this year at all that it got leaked.
- 11:03There's so many more people in the circle,
- 11:06so many more opportunities
- 11:07for wandering eyes.
- 11:09You know,
- 11:09HQ doesn't have that tight locus
- 11:11of control that they
- 11:12usually do on the events
- 11:15and the workouts.
- 11:17So...
- 11:19I mean, as a coach, I guess,
- 11:22if I'm not on the list of
- 11:24coaches to get it sent to them,
- 11:26then I'm glad that Hillard
- 11:27posted it publicly.
- 11:30But I also...
- 11:35I mean, you've known me a good while now.
- 11:37I get pretty fired up when I coach,
- 11:40and I do have a certain
- 11:42level of aggression when it's game time.
- 11:45So my inner coach thought,
- 11:48not looking at it from the
- 11:50nuts and bolts of the sport,
- 11:51is I don't give a shit.
- 11:55We're going to go do what we
- 11:56need to do anyways.
- 11:58So I want to throw this at you.
- 12:01And we're always talking
- 12:03about the sport and the methodology,
- 12:05right?
- 12:05Yeah.
- 12:07The methodology to train
- 12:12general physical
- 12:13preparedness has the term
- 12:15unknown and unknowable.
- 12:17And it is so that you coming
- 12:19into the gym as average Joe
- 12:22are going to do something
- 12:23different every day.
- 12:24It's constantly varied.
- 12:25You don't know what that is going to be.
- 12:27You can't prepare for that.
- 12:29It just is what it is.
- 12:32Somehow that term has
- 12:34flipped over to the sport.
- 12:37But I ask you this.
- 12:40We know what the events of
- 12:41the Olympics are,
- 12:42and it doesn't make it less dramatic.
- 12:46Yeah.
- 12:47So why do we need to hide
- 12:50what these workouts are
- 12:52until last minute?
- 12:57I don't.
- 13:01Especially if some are
- 13:03getting it leaked to them
- 13:04and some are not.
- 13:06Right.
- 13:07I don't personally see an
- 13:08issue if the workouts were released, say,
- 13:13the end of quarterfinals or
- 13:14when the leaderboard was finalized.
- 13:17it's hard because some
- 13:18people will have longer time to prepare.
- 13:20Some people won't,
- 13:21but we had that in the
- 13:22regional system and
- 13:23everybody just kind of
- 13:24understood that the last people to go,
- 13:26we're going to probably put
- 13:27up the fastest times
- 13:29because they had the most
- 13:29time to prepare.
- 13:30They could watch other high
- 13:31level athletes do it and
- 13:32strategize and things like that.
- 13:36I don't necessarily fall in
- 13:37the camp where I want a set, you know,
- 13:40event list year to year.
- 13:42I do like that it changes, but I also, uh,
- 13:47do think it would be nice if we had,
- 13:50especially for the prior
- 13:51stages of the season
- 13:52quarters and the open, we had, you know,
- 13:56kind of like a list,
- 13:56like people have talked about of 50, 40,
- 13:5960, however many movements like, Hey,
- 14:03these are the things.
- 14:04And then for quarterfinals,
- 14:05it's all those things from
- 14:06the open plus these for semifinals,
- 14:09it could be a little more elusive,
- 14:11but perhaps we get the
- 14:12workouts a little bit earlier and,
- 14:14there's a lot of things that
- 14:15play into this because from
- 14:16a coaching standpoint,
- 14:17knowing the workouts early
- 14:19is a nightmare.
- 14:20It's like,
- 14:22how many times can I make them
- 14:23do this or a version of
- 14:25this to perfect it on game
- 14:27day without making them
- 14:28sick and tired of doing this workout,
- 14:31getting an overuse injury
- 14:33from doing the same
- 14:35fricking movement patterns over and over,
- 14:37you know,
- 14:39still trying to preserve general fitness,
- 14:41like not actually letting
- 14:42people get detrained
- 14:43because you're only
- 14:44focusing on these things.
- 14:45So your variance goes down.
- 14:48So it's like, it has a lot of play to it.
- 14:51I don't, I would prefer, of course,
- 14:54that if they were leaked or released,
- 14:57they were done at the same
- 14:58time so that everybody just knows it.
- 15:04But yeah, it's, I don't have...
- 15:07I don't have super strong
- 15:09feelings about the workouts
- 15:12changing and that part of
- 15:13it being unknown and unknowable.
- 15:16I do think though,
- 15:19when we start to use that
- 15:20as an excuse for off the wall movements,
- 15:25it can potentially be an
- 15:26issue and things like that.
- 15:29Also, I think
- 15:32Sometimes that gets brought
- 15:33into the conversation of
- 15:34the way we test movements.
- 15:36So personal bias here,
- 15:37a back loaded ring muscle
- 15:41up is asking for a torn labrum.
- 15:45Like that's a terrible movement.
- 15:46You should never load that
- 15:48dynamic of a movement with
- 15:50a weight behind you.
- 15:52It's a terrible idea.
- 15:53So if that's the
- 15:56justification for something like that,
- 15:57then I would have some
- 15:59arguing points against that.
- 16:01So it's such a nuanced
- 16:02conversation that I think
- 16:03it's hard to have a,
- 16:04a hard stance one way or the other.
- 16:06And there's so many
- 16:08different ways it can apply
- 16:09to different stages in the season.
- 16:13With like these two being known,
- 16:15if they are in fact the real workouts,
- 16:20which there's no reason to
- 16:22believe they're not other
- 16:22than I think Carolyn
- 16:24pointed out in the comments
- 16:26that why two echo bikes.
- 16:28They had two echo bikes last
- 16:30year and they had two
- 16:30assault runner workouts last year.
- 16:32There's no reason it couldn't be.
- 16:33I would be more surprised
- 16:34than the fact that they
- 16:35have echo bikes at every
- 16:36one of these venues,
- 16:37but you can also make the argument.
- 16:40It doesn't matter.
- 16:43If somebody is on an assault
- 16:44fitness bike and somebody
- 16:45is on an assault bike and
- 16:46somebody is on an echo bike,
- 16:47as long as everybody at
- 16:48that regional is the same.
- 16:52Yeah.
- 16:54Right.
- 16:55So with these being known,
- 16:57is there a fear as a coach
- 17:00that you have that athlete
- 17:01that wants to keep drilling
- 17:03this down to perfection
- 17:05that they overuse the
- 17:07muscle and then overtrain
- 17:11it and it creates injury?
- 17:13Yes, exactly.
- 17:14Yeah.
- 17:14You start to hit the same movement pattern,
- 17:18the same exact in the same exact way.
- 17:20So many times with the same loading,
- 17:23right?
- 17:23You're not getting,
- 17:24With the dumbbell,
- 17:26I think the safest
- 17:27assumption with that is
- 17:28it's a 100-pound dumbbell overhead lunge.
- 17:30That would make the most sense.
- 17:33I can't have them do that 16
- 17:37times before then and not
- 17:41start to have shoulder, tricep, elbow,
- 17:45whatever.
- 17:46right start to flare up with
- 17:47people so it's this that's
- 17:49why I almost don't like
- 17:50having them super early
- 17:51because it's this fine
- 17:53balance of okay how many
- 17:55times are we going to do
- 17:55this what other things can
- 17:57I program that simulate
- 18:00this plus perfecting our
- 18:03race day strategy and pacings um
- 18:09it's also mentally hard for
- 18:10the athletes like to do
- 18:13intervals or even the
- 18:14testing of the workout so
- 18:15many times prior.
- 18:17Like, I mean,
- 18:18I know there are athletes who,
- 18:19by the time they get to semifinals,
- 18:21you have to be careful with the workout.
- 18:22If a workout super painful,
- 18:25you don't want to be gun
- 18:26shy going into semifinals
- 18:28of what you're going to experience.
- 18:30Right.
- 18:31Right.
- 18:31It's,
- 18:32it's just this kind of annoying balance.
- 18:35Um,
- 18:38My last question before we
- 18:39just look at the workouts
- 18:40themselves is Europe goes in two weeks.
- 18:45This stuff was going to have
- 18:46to be announced soon anyway.
- 18:51I think the date was the
- 18:5210th in the rulebook.
- 18:55So we're a week away.
- 18:56We're a week early with the league.
- 19:01So the East was going to
- 19:03have three weeks with them anyway.
- 19:10yeah so it's like does it
- 19:11matter yeah I don't know I
- 19:13mean it's a little more
- 19:14time yeah it's just I just
- 19:17think man the crossfit we
- 19:19just love drama we just
- 19:23love drama um before I pull
- 19:24up the workouts here I
- 19:25don't carolyn says I don't
- 19:28think two echo bikes are
- 19:29necessary if you're going
- 19:31to do two of the same thing
- 19:33it should be running
- 19:35I don't disagree,
- 19:36but I would caveat that
- 19:37with the fact that we had
- 19:38the lane eight issue last
- 19:40year at the European
- 19:41semifinal where everybody
- 19:42who ran on lane eight's
- 19:43runner got dead last in the workout.
- 19:46And I would also say I hate shuttle runs.
- 19:48So...
- 19:52don't disagree I don't love
- 19:55the echo bike a whole bunch
- 19:56of times but I at this
- 19:58point don't trust the
- 19:59efficacy of a fair
- 20:02semi-final on assault
- 20:03runners because it was
- 20:04proven last year that they
- 20:06don't have a testable
- 20:09repeatable way to calibrate
- 20:10those so I have a lot of
- 20:15thoughts on that because
- 20:17As a volunteer,
- 20:19starting my life in
- 20:20CrossFit as a volunteer,
- 20:22I saw them calibrate those.
- 20:24Oh, really?
- 20:25I would argue that maybe the
- 20:27person in Europe didn't do their job.
- 20:31Potentially.
- 20:35Or it was just all a coincidence.
- 20:38We believe in those.
- 20:39Yeah.
- 20:41Um, so here are the workouts.
- 20:43Do these make sense to you as a,
- 20:45as a semifinal workout?
- 20:48Yeah.
- 20:49Yeah, for sure.
- 20:51Uh,
- 20:52obviously it would be interesting to
- 20:53see if there, you know,
- 20:55we don't know anything with this,
- 20:56if there's a different echo
- 20:57bike calorie prescription
- 20:59for the ladies on these, or if, you know,
- 21:03it's just expected,
- 21:04they're going to be a
- 21:04little bit longer on those bikes.
- 21:08Um,
- 21:0972 foot is a really particular number.
- 21:12I imagine that's based off
- 21:14of some sort of average
- 21:16length of field of play for
- 21:18most of the regions.
- 21:1815 ring rustle ups isn't
- 21:24anything out of pocket.
- 21:26Tall box jump overs,
- 21:28nothing super crazy there either.
- 21:30I mean, the first workout,
- 21:3270 echo bite calories,
- 21:3314 legless rope climbs,
- 21:3510 box jump overs.
- 21:37you're going to have a
- 21:38little bit of a break
- 21:38between the legless.
- 21:39So it's a healthy number of
- 21:41legless rope climbs.
- 21:42That's for sure.
- 21:43But I don't think it's
- 21:45anything outlandish.
- 21:46Um,
- 21:48If this is truly one of the workouts,
- 21:50I'm a little surprised that
- 21:52we don't see the return of the seated.
- 21:54I thought those were a very
- 21:56good thing to test last year, personally.
- 22:01So it's funny you say that
- 22:03because if you remember,
- 22:05one of the big complaints
- 22:06coming out of semis last
- 22:07year were that people were
- 22:09resting sitting down and it
- 22:11was a bad look for a fitness competition.
- 22:16But here they're split up.
- 22:20Okay.
- 22:21People are going to say resting,
- 22:22sitting down is a bad look,
- 22:24but then I want everybody
- 22:25to remember that when they
- 22:26watch the first two heats
- 22:27of people at semifinals,
- 22:28put the dumbbell down four times.
- 22:33Okay, cool.
- 22:34They'll just be resting, standing up.
- 22:35So that looks better, I guess.
- 22:38Those were comments that were made.
- 22:40Yeah, I mean, it is odd to watch.
- 22:44You're not moving quickly, right?
- 22:47It takes maybe away a little
- 22:48bit of the speed of the
- 22:50race with a seated legless.
- 22:54But I wouldn't have been
- 22:56surprised if those made a
- 22:57return this year.
- 22:58That's for sure.
- 23:00Those wrecked people,
- 23:01both at semis and the games.
- 23:04Well, in the games, they were tall,
- 23:06brother.
- 23:07And I know Kelly had mentioned...
- 23:10And the Einhorn team,
- 23:12when you sat on the mat, you almost sunk.
- 23:16So you were starting even a
- 23:17little bit lower than you
- 23:18would have expected.
- 23:20Yeah.
- 23:22That alpaca workout was gross.
- 23:25Yeah.
- 23:26Hands took some damage.
- 23:29Oh, yeah.
- 23:31So we're good with this.
- 23:33We're going to move on to our podcast.
- 23:36yeah yeah I don't think
- 23:37there's too much to say on
- 23:38this other it's the one
- 23:40thing I would leave with
- 23:41the whole leak thing is
- 23:42it's interesting from a
- 23:43coach's perspective because
- 23:44now it's you almost don't
- 23:47have a choice but to act
- 23:48under the assumption that
- 23:49these are the workouts
- 23:54because then if you if you
- 23:55don't and they are then
- 23:57you're kind of caught with
- 24:00your pants down and right
- 24:02yeah so it's it's and then
- 24:05if they aren't but you did
- 24:07them a whole bunch it's
- 24:08kind of annoying you're
- 24:09like well that was a waste
- 24:10of time so at least
- 24:12hopefully the movements
- 24:13show up if these aren't the
- 24:14exact workouts at this
- 24:15point there's nothing here
- 24:18that wouldn't help you in
- 24:21preparing for semis though
- 24:23correct like it's just that
- 24:27fine line and a fine line
- 24:28of overusing right yeah
- 24:33All right,
- 24:33so we're going to go back to
- 24:34quarters and just talk
- 24:36about those workouts for a
- 24:37second because you made a
- 24:39statement on one of our
- 24:40shows that the most
- 24:43important programming that
- 24:44CrossFit will ever do is
- 24:47this year's quarterfinals
- 24:49because the window to make
- 24:50semis was reduced from 60 to 40.
- 24:53Yep.
- 24:56So it needed to be the most
- 24:57well-rounded test possible.
- 25:01So we're going to go through this,
- 25:03and I want you to explain to me,
- 25:05did CrossFit meet that goal or not?
- 25:09All right.
- 25:11So here is workout one,
- 25:15the famous penalty workout.
- 25:18The penalty workout, the slaughterhouse.
- 25:20Yes.
- 25:22It was four rounds for max
- 25:23reps of one minute of snatches,
- 25:26one minute of rowing for calories,
- 25:29one minute of dumbbell box step-ups,
- 25:31one minute of rest.
- 25:35I liked this workout in the sense,
- 25:40I like this workout more in
- 25:42how it fit in with the
- 25:43totality of the other
- 25:45workouts than as a
- 25:46standalone test for a
- 25:48quarterfinals workout.
- 25:50Especially when on the men's side,
- 25:53we take into account the
- 25:54snatches really didn't matter.
- 25:57It didn't behoove the men to
- 26:00snatch very much.
- 26:01It was get some reps here to help yourself,
- 26:04and then what can you do on
- 26:06the rower and still hammer the step-ups,
- 26:10right?
- 26:11I did like the 20-inch box
- 26:14for both genders, I think, with...
- 26:19just a lot of height
- 26:20discrepancy from human
- 26:22being to human being.
- 26:23I think that is a fair thing.
- 26:24You know,
- 26:25I'm nowhere close to most of my athletes,
- 26:28but if I do box step overs
- 26:30on a 24 against some athletes that are,
- 26:34that I coached that are shorter than me,
- 26:35I can hold my own just cause I'm tall.
- 26:38Right.
- 26:41Um,
- 26:43I liked the fact that it was
- 26:46an interval test.
- 26:48I think it fit the bill of a
- 26:51power output-y-ish workout well.
- 26:56As a general rule of thumb,
- 26:58I don't love AMRAPs in competition,
- 27:01but I also understand those
- 27:03are probably not ever going
- 27:04to disappear completely.
- 27:07But overall, as a standalone workout,
- 27:09I wouldn't have loved it.
- 27:11When you look at the other three,
- 27:13I think it fit very well.
- 27:17My argument for your AMRAP
- 27:18is that this was a long
- 27:23time to get four workouts in.
- 27:26So if ever you're going to do an AMRAP,
- 27:29this is probably the weekend to do it.
- 27:31Yeah, I would agree with that.
- 27:36In my observations watching Jamie, Haley,
- 27:39Jim,
- 27:41and some of the general population of
- 27:44Jamie's gym do this workout
- 27:47is a lot of people underestimated it.
- 27:49Yeah.
- 27:51Really underestimated it.
- 27:54This is the only one I didn't do.
- 27:57Let's put it like that.
- 27:59I had no desire for that smoke.
- 28:03Yeah, Haley... I mean,
- 28:04Haley got into the second
- 28:05round and realized she had
- 28:07jacked her heart rate to a
- 28:09point it was not going to recover.
- 28:12Yep.
- 28:13Put the dumbbells down, called it a day,
- 28:17came back and did it the next day.
- 28:18Lived to fight another day.
- 28:19That's good.
- 28:20I did like...
- 28:23that there was a certain
- 28:24amount of strategy to it.
- 28:25I just don't like when that
- 28:27bleeds in from you can strategize it to,
- 28:31well,
- 28:31really you strategizing it is just
- 28:33the same way that
- 28:34everybody's going to do it.
- 28:36Right.
- 28:36Like putting your eggs in those baskets,
- 28:38so to speak.
- 28:41Yeah.
- 28:41I, you can probably convince me I'm wrong,
- 28:46but I thought for some athletes,
- 28:49their best bet was to snatch like crazy.
- 28:53And forget about this box step-ups.
- 28:56For general population people,
- 28:59just doing quarterfinals to do them, yes.
- 29:03But everybody who is trying
- 29:04to be in the top 40,
- 29:06those step-ups were it.
- 29:10Okay.
- 29:11You got to think,
- 29:11a good score on those step-ups,
- 29:14we're talking 20-plus a round,
- 29:16that's a large ask.
- 29:20Even if you're holding...
- 29:22say somebody could do 13 snatches,
- 29:26those seven more snatches in that minute,
- 29:30that's a tall ask.
- 29:32Okay.
- 29:33Right.
- 29:34That's why you're the coach
- 29:35and I'm the media guy.
- 29:38I also watched a lot of
- 29:39people do this and thought
- 29:40about it a lot.
- 29:42All right.
- 29:43So let's go to workout two.
- 29:46The grinder.
- 29:48The grinder.
- 29:52This was three rounds for time,
- 29:5350 wall ball shots,
- 29:5550 lateral burpee box jump overs.
- 29:59Not really,
- 30:00didn't have to be burpee lateral,
- 30:03but those that were doing
- 30:06it fast kind of went lateral.
- 30:08Mm-hmm.
- 30:09Yeah.
- 30:11I think the decision to call
- 30:13it lateral but then not
- 30:14mandate the lateral was
- 30:16from kind of the lack – not
- 30:18wanting to do floor plans,
- 30:19measuring tape under the box,
- 30:21that kind of stuff.
- 30:22So I think it would have
- 30:24just been – if they didn't
- 30:26want the scrutiny of it,
- 30:27they should have just said
- 30:28burpee box jump overs.
- 30:30Orient yourself however you would like,
- 30:33right?
- 30:36My media observation of this workout was –
- 30:39Find your pace.
- 30:43Very correct.
- 30:43And hold that pace to the bitter end.
- 30:47Yep.
- 30:48Come hell or high water.
- 30:50That is... So this was...
- 30:52This is actually a really
- 30:53interesting workout, I think,
- 30:55from a coaching perspective.
- 30:56So this was our 5K run.
- 30:59This was our 5K row of quarterfinals.
- 31:02But...
- 31:04crossfit did it in a way
- 31:06where from a crossfit
- 31:08methodology programming
- 31:09perspective it was a weight
- 31:11lifting and gymnastics
- 31:12movement we have a loaded
- 31:16movement in the wall ball
- 31:17and then we have a body
- 31:18weight movement in the
- 31:19burpee box jump overs right
- 31:22but the stimulus was long
- 31:27aerobic capacity right
- 31:31muscle endurance that kind
- 31:32of stuff so it was
- 31:35it was good in a sense to
- 31:37see something like this again,
- 31:39I think as a community,
- 31:42we've gotten away from
- 31:43testing engine without
- 31:46leveraging machines a lot of the time.
- 31:50And you know,
- 31:50the older CrossFit programming,
- 31:53large chippers with a ton
- 31:55of reps with lighter weight
- 31:57kind of movements that you
- 31:58can still be cyclical with were a staple.
- 32:01Um,
- 32:04You're absolutely right, though.
- 32:04This was how well can you pace yourself?
- 32:08Can you sustain it?
- 32:10And there was absolutely nowhere to hide.
- 32:13If you didn't have the ability to sustain,
- 32:16be aerobic throughout this whole piece,
- 32:18keep moving on those burpees,
- 32:20keep moving through those wall balls,
- 32:22then you were just going to
- 32:23have a bad day.
- 32:25And I saw two types of athletes.
- 32:29The athletes that died on the last set
- 32:32the athletes who could pick
- 32:33up the pace just one gear
- 32:36higher just a smidge yep
- 32:38yeah yeah I mean speaking
- 32:40from like a you know an
- 32:43actual practical
- 32:44perspective when jacob and
- 32:47I game planned his pacing
- 32:48for this we basically game
- 32:50planned a 19-minute finish
- 32:53and he finished his first
- 32:55round exactly on pace
- 32:59And then he finished his
- 33:00second round exactly on pace.
- 33:04His score ended up being
- 33:05just over 19 minutes.
- 33:07And that's because when he
- 33:08started to pick it up,
- 33:10he jumped off the box.
- 33:14So he had to run around,
- 33:15do another burpee box up
- 33:16over and ended up, he would have been,
- 33:18you know, sub 19, but that to your point,
- 33:22that is how that workout should go,
- 33:24right?
- 33:24You should be on pace,
- 33:26perfectly holding steady,
- 33:29very uncomfortable from
- 33:31minute eight through,
- 33:34but not going to fall apart.
- 33:36And then somewhere in those
- 33:37last 50 burpees,
- 33:38depending on your level of fitness, you,
- 33:41you kind of bite down on the mouthpiece.
- 33:45As an athlete,
- 33:47what is the fear going
- 33:49through your head that
- 33:50you're going to notch up
- 33:52that gear just a hair too early?
- 33:56You can't come back.
- 33:57Right.
- 33:58You can't come back.
- 33:59I mean,
- 34:00so I got roped into doing this with
- 34:03some other Ascend athletes.
- 34:05And I finished my first round at 640,
- 34:08which is exactly on pace to finish.
- 34:11Looked at the clock and was like, well,
- 34:13that's not happening again.
- 34:14So just kind of muddled
- 34:15through the middle round.
- 34:17I was with another one of our athletes,
- 34:19Dion, going into the last wall balls.
- 34:22He got a little bit ahead of me.
- 34:24We had about a minute 15,
- 34:29a minute 30 on the burpees.
- 34:33And I said, I'm going to go get him.
- 34:36And I just started pushing my burpees.
- 34:38Did eight or nine, looked up the clock,
- 34:42and we had 45 seconds left.
- 34:45And I was like, crap.
- 34:47Because even that, for me, where I was at,
- 34:49I tipped over that red line.
- 34:51And then those last 45 seconds,
- 34:54I just had to go to moving
- 34:56and surviving pace.
- 34:57And then I tried to pick it
- 34:58up for a couple more at the end.
- 35:00So if you do that...
- 35:03you know,
- 35:03if you're on a pace to finish
- 35:04that workout and you're fit
- 35:05enough to finish that workout,
- 35:07but you do that on burpee box,
- 35:09jump over 10 of the last 50,
- 35:12that's a bad day.
- 35:16Yeah.
- 35:17All right.
- 35:18So we got to go here.
- 35:23Number three, my favorite one.
- 35:27Four time, three rounds,
- 35:2810 handstand push-ups, 20 toes to bar.
- 35:31Two rounds, 10 strict handstand push-ups,
- 35:34five rope climbs.
- 35:35One round,
- 35:3610 chest to wall handstand push-ups,
- 35:3820 muscle-ups.
- 35:40Time cap, 15 minutes.
- 35:43So this one was all gymnastics, right?
- 35:46So,
- 35:47and this is where I think it's good to
- 35:49start talking about how
- 35:50this all fits together.
- 35:51So we have a pure gymnastics workout.
- 35:53We had technically a
- 35:55weightlifting and gymnastics workout,
- 35:56but the stimulus was very
- 35:58aerobic and long.
- 36:00The time cap on this is long,
- 36:01but the competitive times is not long,
- 36:04right?
- 36:05And then we had that, what was it,
- 36:0715 minutes of work,
- 36:09but it was more power-based
- 36:10on the first one.
- 36:11You kind of had to really
- 36:12hustle for about three minutes,
- 36:14and then you could have
- 36:15your minute of recovery.
- 36:19I liked the progressive
- 36:21nature of the handstand
- 36:22pushup as a separator.
- 36:25in this workout I also liked
- 36:27the rope climb volume I
- 36:29thought it was appropriate
- 36:31for semi or for quarter
- 36:34final stage not something
- 36:37that you know is going to
- 36:39completely like you can't
- 36:41win this workout on the
- 36:42rope climbs but you can
- 36:43lose your score on the rope
- 36:45climbs if you're not
- 36:46proficient um and then
- 36:49finishing with 20 ring muscle ups I think
- 36:54This is something that we've
- 36:55seen over the last couple
- 36:57years of quarterfinals tests.
- 36:59We had the 21 wall facing
- 37:02last year on the first one,
- 37:03we had the nine rope climbs.
- 37:05So having some sort of a
- 37:06very taxing dense set of
- 37:10gymnastics to finish might
- 37:13be a trend that we continue
- 37:14to see rather than
- 37:15dispersing the volume
- 37:17throughout the workouts or
- 37:19a workout into more manageable sets.
- 37:24This was my favorite workout
- 37:25of quarterfinals as a test.
- 37:27I really liked this.
- 37:30I liked that athletes could
- 37:33play to their strengths a
- 37:34little bit on this one and
- 37:37still get competitive times
- 37:39for their regions.
- 37:41You didn't have to
- 37:42necessarily go unbroken on
- 37:44the toes to bar and the
- 37:45kipping or the strict, right?
- 37:47You didn't have to go as
- 37:49fast as you could on the rope climbs.
- 37:52It was more,
- 37:53how do you move through these
- 37:54first five rounds and set
- 37:57yourself up for success on
- 37:58those 20 muscle ups?
- 38:00And that strategy would be
- 38:01different for different athletes for,
- 38:03as an example for Jamie, right?
- 38:06We knew, okay, we got to get ahead, right?
- 38:10For Jacob,
- 38:12who ended up redoing this and
- 38:13did a lot better his second time,
- 38:15it was more,
- 38:16how do we have you better
- 38:18when you get to the rings,
- 38:20even if it's just around the same time,
- 38:22so that we can hold
- 38:24potentially better sets, right?
- 38:28I think, too,
- 38:29if you're the elite of the elite,
- 38:31this was a pure muscle-up
- 38:33workout and how you manage
- 38:35yourself to get there.
- 38:37If you...
- 38:38are a fringe semifinal athlete,
- 38:42it could be a couple things.
- 38:45There are two stoppers in
- 38:46this workout that if you're
- 38:48not proficient at,
- 38:49could stop you from being successful.
- 38:52And that is the handstand
- 38:53pushups or the rope climb.
- 38:59So I watched Jamie and Haley do this.
- 39:04They are very different athletes.
- 39:07Very different athletes.
- 39:10For Haley,
- 39:11it wasn't that the handstand
- 39:12push-ups stopped her.
- 39:14It just slowed her down.
- 39:15Yep.
- 39:17To where she gets to the
- 39:18ring muscle-ups and she
- 39:19just doesn't have a lot of time.
- 39:21Right.
- 39:23Right.
- 39:24She was proficient at the rope climbs,
- 39:27but side-by-side, her and Jamie... Like,
- 39:29Jamie is proficient at
- 39:31everything leading up to
- 39:33those muscle-ups.
- 39:34Mm-hmm.
- 39:35And it was about...
- 39:38could she string them together?
- 39:40Right.
- 39:40When she got there.
- 39:42Right.
- 39:44Yeah.
- 39:45I,
- 39:45I'm a big fan of rope climbs personally.
- 39:48I'm really glad they were in
- 39:50quarterfinals.
- 39:51I think it's a good thing to test.
- 39:52I don't think,
- 39:53I know there was some
- 39:54pushback on some other shows.
- 39:56Maybe it was barbell spin.
- 39:58And I thought I saw
- 39:59something else on another
- 40:00channel about rope climbs being a, um,
- 40:04uncommon movement or this
- 40:05that and the other and I
- 40:06thought it was perfect two
- 40:08weeks ish before
- 40:10quarterfinals the main site
- 40:11workout of the day was 30
- 40:12rope climbs for time so I
- 40:16I'm a big fan of rope
- 40:17climbs I program you can
- 40:18ask any of the any of the
- 40:19athletes I coach or a lot
- 40:21of our ascend athletes I
- 40:22program a lot of rope
- 40:23climbs uh I have a running
- 40:25joke if you're trying to be
- 40:26competitive rope climbs are
- 40:27a monostructural movement
- 40:29not a gymnastics movement
- 40:32you should just if you can
- 40:33get to a place on those
- 40:34rope climbs where you just
- 40:35breathe and move uh it's a
- 40:37game changer I'll tell you
- 40:40what I've seen a lot of
- 40:42crossfit in my days my
- 40:44co-host and my friend she
- 40:46can kick ass on rope climbs
- 40:48she's a monster at rope
- 40:49climbs dude oh my gosh I
- 40:51love it it is first as
- 40:54small as she is to be a two pool
- 40:58Rope climber is just insane.
- 40:59It's amazing.
- 41:00It makes me so happy every
- 41:01time I watch her do rope climbs.
- 41:04I get chills right now.
- 41:06Yeah.
- 41:06She's great at them.
- 41:08Yeah.
- 41:09So then we finish up with a workout four.
- 41:16And that is the ladder.
- 41:18Yep.
- 41:21So you talked, we had power output.
- 41:26We had the engine workout
- 41:30mixed modal engine test.
- 41:31Yeah.
- 41:32Yeah.
- 41:32We have the pure gymnastics
- 41:36and now we have pure barbell,
- 41:38pure barbell, single modality.
- 41:41So I actually had a
- 41:44conversation with one of
- 41:45our other coaches two days
- 41:47ago about this workout.
- 41:48Cause he, he's an Olympic lifter by trade.
- 41:51Um,
- 41:53done CrossFit for many years, um,
- 41:55been on some teams that
- 41:56have been to the games and
- 41:57stuff like that,
- 41:58but he is a very purist
- 42:00when it comes to weightlifting.
- 42:01And he was making the
- 42:02argument to me that this
- 42:03isn't a strength workout.
- 42:06Um, and I disagree.
- 42:08I think,
- 42:09especially at the quarterfinal level,
- 42:10this very much was a strength test.
- 42:12It did the job of testing strength.
- 42:14Um,
- 42:17Jacob finished this.
- 42:18He went in with a really, really good plan,
- 42:20executed really well.
- 42:21Hattie had a similar plan,
- 42:23a little bit more variance
- 42:24in her strategy.
- 42:25But the first thing Jacob
- 42:27said to me after he got up
- 42:28off the floor was,
- 42:29you can't do well at that
- 42:30and not be strong.
- 42:34And he's 100% correct.
- 42:36So this tested strength in a
- 42:37CrossFit manner,
- 42:39you had a buy-in of grace
- 42:40at ascending load.
- 42:43And then you had to AMRAP
- 42:45245 as many times as you could,
- 42:47or 165 for the ladies as
- 42:49many times you could in the
- 42:50remaining time.
- 42:51So it was a very
- 42:51cross-fitting way to test strength,
- 42:53but I think it was an
- 42:54appropriate way to test
- 42:56strength at this corner final stage,
- 42:58especially with a bigger
- 43:00pool of athletes relative
- 43:02to a one rep max or something like that.
- 43:04Cause you could have had people,
- 43:06if they would have
- 43:06programmed a pure one RM
- 43:08that didn't have any kind
- 43:09of fitness requirement,
- 43:10you could have had people who
- 43:14maybe barely did four rounds
- 43:18on the previous workout and
- 43:20then could have just smoked
- 43:22a 370-pound clean and jerk.
- 43:26I know athletes at local
- 43:27gyms in Houston who have that potential.
- 43:32So I think this balanced
- 43:34things well for the
- 43:36leaderboard needing to
- 43:39the people who are strong
- 43:39enough and fit enough,
- 43:41we're going to place very
- 43:42well in this test.
- 43:43Right.
- 43:46And I actually, I did this one as well.
- 43:48And Jacob and I had a good
- 43:49conversation about it.
- 43:50Cause he like watched me slash judged me.
- 43:53And so Jacob got 28 reps.
- 43:58I got six.
- 44:00That's the difference.
- 44:02But that,
- 44:02that perfectly highlights the
- 44:04difference between it being
- 44:06a strength test and a fitness test.
- 44:10right?
- 44:11For him,
- 44:12he had to be fit enough to keep
- 44:14moving that bar.
- 44:17I just not strong enough.
- 44:18It doesn't matter.
- 44:19Yeah.
- 44:20Right.
- 44:21So I actually really liked
- 44:22how they did this.
- 44:23I did think it was interesting.
- 44:24And I guess this bleeds into
- 44:26probably one of my biggest
- 44:27takeaways from the test.
- 44:28I thought it was interesting
- 44:29that it was single modality,
- 44:32even though it had some volume to it.
- 44:35So when we zoom out, so let me,
- 44:38Reset this conversation.
- 44:40Coming into this,
- 44:41you made the claim that
- 44:43this was the most important
- 44:45programming that CrossFit
- 44:46was going to do because of
- 44:48the short window for people
- 44:51to qualify for semifinals
- 44:53and how many people were
- 44:54going to be competing.
- 44:56It had to be perfectly programmed.
- 44:59Did CrossFit meet that expectation?
- 45:02Go.
- 45:04I would say yes with an
- 45:05asterisk just because of
- 45:08all of the shenanigans
- 45:10surrounding the step-ups.
- 45:14From an energy system, loading, skill,
- 45:20testing, balance testing, yes.
- 45:23I think they did a very good job.
- 45:25I think from testing the
- 45:28fitness perspective,
- 45:31the right people are moving on.
- 45:34right?
- 45:35Even those people who got
- 45:36bonked out because of a penalty,
- 45:37if they were in,
- 45:38I think they fit that bill, right?
- 45:45I was very pleased with the
- 45:46workouts overall,
- 45:47especially after things
- 45:49have actually kind of
- 45:49calmed down and I could sit
- 45:50and kind of think about them a lot more.
- 45:53Something that I thought was
- 45:54interesting that is a
- 45:57little bit different from
- 45:58what we've seen in the past is
- 46:01To me,
- 46:01when you look at these four workouts
- 46:03on a piece of paper,
- 46:03it is almost like a CrossFit combine.
- 46:10So you have an interval test
- 46:13that requires high power output.
- 46:16You have a long aerobic test
- 46:20that requires muscle endurance, right?
- 46:23And bounding.
- 46:24Then you have a pure gymnastics test.
- 46:31with varied skill and things like that.
- 46:33And then you have a pure
- 46:35single modality
- 46:36weightlifting test that
- 46:37requires both strength and fitness.
- 46:40A lot of times in
- 46:41quarterfinals of the past,
- 46:43we've seen loading and
- 46:45skill much more evenly
- 46:47distributed throughout the workouts.
- 46:49Last year,
- 46:49we had crossovers and 70 pound
- 46:53dumbbell snatch for the men,
- 46:5450 pounds for the ladies.
- 46:55We had heavy front squats with gymnastics.
- 46:58We had moderate to
- 47:00moderate to kind of heavy
- 47:01deadlifts with gymnastics.
- 47:04And then we had the row GHD
- 47:05is kind of this longer test.
- 47:07When we look at this year and last year,
- 47:10it's kind of pretty
- 47:12different in how they
- 47:14structured these pieces in the testing,
- 47:18but it's still,
- 47:19I think did a very good job.
- 47:21Obviously your athletes that
- 47:22are on the bubble and
- 47:23fighting for those bubble spots,
- 47:25the programming structure
- 47:27matters a lot more than,
- 47:29for them to perform and, you know,
- 47:30possibly punch a ticket.
- 47:33But I just thought it was an
- 47:34interesting observation
- 47:36that it kind of seemed to
- 47:37me like they were testing
- 47:40specific different modality
- 47:42or different themes of CrossFit,
- 47:44so to speak, in each, you know,
- 47:46each of these tests.
- 47:47But then when you put it all together,
- 47:48it's relatively well-rounded, I think.
- 47:51Kenneth says, that was an awesome analogy,
- 47:54CrossFit Combine.
- 47:56Thank you.
- 47:57It kind of is right.
- 47:58Like that's what they're
- 47:59trying to do anyway.
- 48:01They're trying to show the
- 48:02talent of these athletes to
- 48:05make sure they get the
- 48:06right people onto the next round.
- 48:09Yeah.
- 48:10And I mean,
- 48:11if we're going to continue with
- 48:12this kind of combine thought process,
- 48:14combine analogy to me,
- 48:16if there's a stage where you want that,
- 48:18it is quarterfinals.
- 48:20What's your bench test?
- 48:21What's your 40, right?
- 48:23Let me see you run a route.
- 48:24Let me see that stuff before
- 48:26you go off to the big leagues.
- 48:29What do the athletes at the
- 48:30NFL Combine call it?
- 48:32A cattle call.
- 48:34Right.
- 48:3425% of the people in the open,
- 48:36a huge amount of people
- 48:37that you need to funnel
- 48:39down to the people that are
- 48:40going to be drafted in the NFL.
- 48:42Right.
- 48:44I love that analogy.
- 48:48Yeah.
- 48:50I like, I love the tests as a fan.
- 48:54What always,
- 48:56they always seem to do a
- 48:57pretty good job at this level.
- 48:59And it's the level that we
- 49:00don't get to see as a fan.
- 49:06And it's the one I want to see the most.
- 49:11Yeah.
- 49:13Yeah.
- 49:13I mean, I, I,
- 49:17I love every athlete that I coach,
- 49:19but I will always have a
- 49:21special place in my heart
- 49:22for the athlete who is
- 49:24clawing with everything
- 49:25they have to go to semifinals.
- 49:28And they just get no love.
- 49:31And it's the most stressful
- 49:33because you're waiting a
- 49:35week for everything to shuffle.
- 49:38They're still waiting to see
- 49:40who's accepting and who's declining.
- 49:42Have you seen Halpin's thing
- 49:43about the team alternates?
- 49:46Yeah, it's like,
- 49:47I guess there's some issue
- 49:48with people who are on a team,
- 49:51but like roster,
- 49:53but listed as the alternate,
- 49:55not being able to sign up
- 49:56and accept their individual invite.
- 49:58I have no idea.
- 49:58That was the gist of his
- 49:59story that I briefly read.
- 50:02I think it's by tomorrow.
- 50:03They have to,
- 50:04they have to declare team or individual.
- 50:06Also, I have no idea what's happening,
- 50:08but Madison just called me.
- 50:09One of my team athletes just
- 50:11text me and one of my team
- 50:12group chats went off.
- 50:13So I bet the team workouts
- 50:14just got released.
- 50:18Okay.
- 50:20Oh, I love it.
- 50:21Um, fun.
- 50:24I do think one thing I will
- 50:25say about quarterfinals before, you know,
- 50:28we, we move on or do whatnot.
- 50:31I think it's really
- 50:32unfortunate that whether
- 50:35it's just because of the
- 50:36shock value of people
- 50:37getting penalties this year
- 50:39relative to years in the
- 50:40past or whatever we want to
- 50:41put the onus on for what happened with,
- 50:44with that, um,
- 50:46I think because of that,
- 50:48no one is talking about the
- 50:51programming other than in a
- 50:53bad light with one workout.
- 50:54And really,
- 50:58there's a lot of bitching going on.
- 51:01But if Paige Powers isn't
- 51:02one of the people penalized,
- 51:04it doesn't even make the front page.
- 51:09I said this,
- 51:11and I mean this with no disrespect.
- 51:13I would feel the same way if
- 51:15it was one of my athletes.
- 51:17CrossFit got along just fine
- 51:19before Paige Powers was doing CrossFit.
- 51:22We will be okay.
- 51:24It sucks.
- 51:25I get it.
- 51:26But people really just kind
- 51:29of went crazy with some of this stuff.
- 51:31I love Paige Powers.
- 51:33She is one of my favorite athletes.
- 51:36She came on the show early in her career.
- 51:40She's a monster, dude.
- 51:42But if...
- 51:47just uh chase and bill gave
- 51:48the programming praise too
- 51:50I'm glad I didn't get to
- 51:51watch their show I do
- 51:52obviously being a super
- 51:54nerd usually try to tune
- 51:55into their programming
- 51:56shows and stuff but uh I
- 51:58didn't get to catch that
- 51:59one so I use that as a here
- 52:01they are oh boy all right
- 52:06These are the semifinal team
- 52:08athletes or team workouts.
- 52:11So I guess we'll go,
- 52:12we'll go through these real
- 52:13quick and get your first impression.
- 52:14Okay.
- 52:15I do have to go at the top of the hour.
- 52:16So we have about 10 minutes.
- 52:19All right.
- 52:20Um, so team event one, 30 rope climbs,
- 52:25120 wall facing handstand pushups,
- 52:28150 calorie echo bike,
- 52:3048 foot handstand walk accumulated.
- 52:32Anyhow,
- 52:33non-working athletes must hold the worm.
- 52:37So I'm imagining that's one
- 52:39athlete working at a time.
- 52:41Or two.
- 52:42No one?
- 52:44Two might be a tall ask at semifinals.
- 52:48Holding the worm with two
- 52:48people is really hard.
- 52:50Team event two.
- 52:52Three cleans.
- 52:54Two front squats, one jerk.
- 52:56So barbell complex.
- 52:59So it's a clean and jerk.
- 53:00Basically.
- 53:04Okay.
- 53:04Yeah.
- 53:06uh team event three five
- 53:08rounds for time 800 meter
- 53:10run 15 worm thrusters so
- 53:13we'll have runners there's
- 53:15that two and a half mile
- 53:18run and team event four
- 53:26four time male female pair
- 53:28one three rounds 30 calorie
- 53:30row 30 overhead squats
- 53:32Male-female pair, 290-calorie row,
- 53:3490 overhead squats.
- 53:36What's the load?
- 53:37125, 185.
- 53:39Shoo!
- 53:3990 at 185?
- 53:39Well, I imagine that's split.
- 53:40Yeah.
- 53:41Yeah.
- 53:42It doesn't say synchro, so...
- 53:55Event five, four rounds for time,
- 53:57five synchro muscle-ups pair one,
- 54:00five synchro muscle-ups pair two,
- 54:0110 worm clean and jerks,
- 54:0315 synchro burpees over the worm,
- 54:06one section worm walking lunge.
- 54:09I like that.
- 54:13And that is it.
- 54:15Okay.
- 54:15Interesting.
- 54:18Only five events instead of six.
- 54:21Called that.
- 54:21They're only competing two days.
- 54:24Is that enough to get the
- 54:25best of the games?
- 54:28Yes.
- 54:29Yeah, I think so.
- 54:31I think the difference
- 54:32between the top tier teams
- 54:34and the bottom is there's a
- 54:36pretty big gap.
- 54:37Yeah,
- 54:38I think just briefly thinking about
- 54:39these workouts, your top tier teams,
- 54:41you're going to have
- 54:41significantly different
- 54:42scores for sure on this workout,
- 54:47the run workout.
- 54:50Carolyn,
- 54:51do we like the next lift for five events?
- 54:55So full disclosure, myself as a coach,
- 54:58I'm kind of tired of testing max lifts.
- 55:01I would much rather see
- 55:02moderate to heavy barbells
- 55:03paired with high skill or
- 55:05something like that.
- 55:05At this point,
- 55:06I just think we could use a
- 55:07change for a couple of years.
- 55:08That being said,
- 55:09I think there's a strong
- 55:11argument to make that it's
- 55:14going to impact the leaderboard,
- 55:15but they haven't really
- 55:17rewarded the teams for
- 55:18being strong at any point
- 55:20in the season so far.
- 55:21And again,
- 55:22with there only being four
- 55:23stages of the season,
- 55:24open quarter semis games,
- 55:26how long can we make the
- 55:27argument that you're not
- 55:29allowed to have a max lift yet?
- 55:34So I kind of see both sides of that, but.
- 55:41Lex,
- 55:41that's the same complex Indy had before.
- 55:43I do believe it is.
- 55:45I think so.
- 55:45Yeah.
- 55:48In,
- 55:50Interesting that they're
- 55:51doing clean and jerk after
- 55:53the teams did deadlifts and
- 55:55shoulder to overhead in quarterfinals,
- 55:57which is relatively similar
- 55:58movement patterns.
- 56:00Full disclosure,
- 56:01I was kind of expecting a snatch.
- 56:08It's the year of the clean and jerk.
- 56:12Max lifts do get the crowd going for sure.
- 56:14Maybe the Indies will have a
- 56:15snatch variation.
- 56:16I think that would be, to me,
- 56:20a wee bit too repetitive if
- 56:23we had clean and jerk in
- 56:25quarterfinals for max reps
- 56:26at a moderately heavy load
- 56:27and then a clean and jerk 1RM.
- 56:31So this is my argument to Wad Zombie,
- 56:34right?
- 56:35So I've been in the Coliseum
- 56:37for some max lift.
- 56:38I was there for the sandbag.
- 56:39I was there for...
- 56:42A lot.
- 56:42And the,
- 56:43and the roof comes off the
- 56:44building in the Coliseum.
- 56:46I would argue that the 400 meter,
- 56:49not really run into the
- 56:52clean and jerk ladder or
- 56:53the clean ladder got the
- 56:55fans just as hyped as a max lift.
- 57:00Yeah.
- 57:01And it had a fitness component to it.
- 57:05Yeah.
- 57:09I'm okay.
- 57:12The worm thruster and worm
- 57:14clean and jerk is fitness, not strength.
- 57:17I have athletes I coach who
- 57:19do not have the largest
- 57:20clean and jerk in the world,
- 57:21and they can absolutely
- 57:23hold it together with their
- 57:25team doing worm clean and jerks.
- 57:27So, yes.
- 57:30But I think for most teams
- 57:32who are competitive at this point,
- 57:33the worm is a test of synchronicity,
- 57:37fitness,
- 57:37and muscle endurance rather than
- 57:38strength.
- 57:39Unless they...
- 57:40bring out that crazy thing
- 57:41that was sectioned out and
- 57:43we watch everybody get their ass kicked.
- 57:46Now that brought the crowd to their feet.
- 57:48Yeah.
- 57:49People were scared.
- 57:49Someone's going to die.
- 57:50Yeah.
- 57:52Um, as I said yesterday on coffee pods,
- 57:55nobody watches sports for safety.
- 57:57This is true.
- 57:59Just,
- 57:59just remember the people like me who
- 58:01are in the back, like,
- 58:05Carolyn is not happy.
- 58:07She's not happy.
- 58:08I don't disagree.
- 58:09And I, I haven't,
- 58:12I haven't looked at it more
- 58:13than what we just saw, but it does.
- 58:15I mean, you have muscle up handstand,
- 58:17push up, clean and jerk thruster worm.
- 58:22Yeah.
- 58:23So a good bit of overhead work,
- 58:26which I mean, they did dumbbell snatch,
- 58:28shouldered overhead.
- 58:30ring muscle up premium on
- 58:32ring muscle ups at this
- 58:33point um handstand push-ups
- 58:39in quarterfinals so yeah I
- 58:43would say that she's on to
- 58:44something there with
- 58:45potentially some redundant
- 58:46overhead work um Carolyn
- 58:50says I'm not saying I'm not
- 58:51happy I'm just looking at
- 58:53movement patterns Carolyn
- 58:55I'm still salty that you
- 58:57got way more votes than I
- 58:58did on our drafted teams
- 59:05I like two and a half mile run.
- 59:08I'll be interested to dive into the,
- 59:10the flow of that workout.
- 59:13No way they have two runner
- 59:15or four runners.
- 59:16Yeah.
- 59:17It's so this is like, it's nice,
- 59:19but you don't have the flow
- 59:20of the workouts here.
- 59:22Right.
- 59:25I mean,
- 59:26I'm going to make my teams just
- 59:27probably run together
- 59:28because now we'll do some
- 59:31different variations of it.
- 59:33I'm sure if you go to the website,
- 59:35they probably have the full descriptions.
- 59:38Or they'll be up tonight or tomorrow.
- 59:43I guess CrossFit just said, screw it.
- 59:46The Indies got linked,
- 59:47so we'll just drop the team
- 59:48workouts to get everybody's
- 59:50attention on something else.
- 59:52Hey, look over there.
- 59:53Yeah, literally.
- 59:56All right.
- 59:57Well, awesome.
- 59:59We did all that and still
- 1:00:00got it under an hour.
- 1:00:02I think this is the best
- 1:00:03we've ever done right there.
- 1:00:06Well, thank you everybody for joining in.
- 1:00:08Um,
- 1:00:09that looks like this thing may become a
- 1:00:10weekly thing.
- 1:00:12Um,
- 1:00:12I just got to get the bumpers for it
- 1:00:15and the backdrop.
- 1:00:15So we represent what we're
- 1:00:17really doing here.
- 1:00:17Yeah.
- 1:00:19With that being said,
- 1:00:21I'm going to go ahead, shut her down and,
- 1:00:25uh,
- 1:00:26had a Kenya in an hour for my last
- 1:00:29Canadian interview of the day.
- 1:00:32Um,
- 1:00:32this is Canada day on Clydesdale media.
- 1:00:35So we are representing
- 1:00:37Canada on this one too,
- 1:00:39even though he's a Texas guy.
- 1:00:42I am a Texas guy now.
- 1:00:44Yeah.
- 1:00:44So, all right.
- 1:00:45With that,
- 1:00:46thank you everybody in the chat
- 1:00:47for being here.
- 1:00:48Thank you, Carolyn, for all your input.
- 1:00:50We love it as always.
- 1:00:52And we'll see everybody next
- 1:00:53time on chopping it up with the,
- 1:00:55with coach crispy cream.
- 1:00:57Bye guys.
