- 0:10Switch it off. Hey well, Avenge the
- 0:16annihilation of our people with a retaliation, so massive, so
- 0:20merciless that it will live in history.
- 1:38Doctor, Who founds what an invented, Invincible species.
- 1:45It's only a few million years since they crawled out of the
- 1:49internet and learned to pop cast puny defenseless.
- 1:52Bypass usually the last to be picked for football.
- 1:56They've survived Moffitt White House and grade, they survived
- 1:59Cosmic Wars, and hideous, our reconstructions.
- 2:02And now, here they are Out Among the Stars, having photos at
- 2:06conventions, ready to Outsider ternatea or however long it
- 2:10takes us to do this episode. There in Dominican in dorm.
- 2:16Welcome to Strictly Come hamster where we are celebrating 50
- 2:20years of season 12 five stories, five guests.
- 2:24But which one will be? We will we be raving about or
- 2:27which one will get a big fat Noah?
- 2:29Are you voorhis or against us? Right.
- 2:33That's enough of the season 12 puns to decide which of these
- 2:37five stories will lift that location glitter ball.
- 2:39Let's meet our illustrious panel now, we are making strictly
- 2:43history today. I believe as we have two
- 2:45wonderful ladies on our panel. Yeah, we'll be the first
- 2:48Strictly Come hamster to pass the Bechtel test.
- 2:51Is it back down or best deal? Which is more than could be said
- 2:55for this era. Where female characters are as
- 2:58rarest in B&M. So first, let me introduce my
- 3:02Nemesis Time Lord apologist and there's a lot to apologize for.
- 3:05But at least we'll agree that invasion of the dinosaurs is
- 3:10great. It's the lovely Joe short.
- 3:12Hello Joe. Hello everybody on.
- 3:16We might be Nemesis Daniel but I also wrote that Bloody speech.
- 3:20I had that did you offered me in a million not Okay.
- 3:28So sorry, what could you do? I like at some point in the
- 3:32episode can you say I'll put it at the end of the episode?
- 3:35Well, the episode with the speeches really, really clear
- 3:40about that. It's lovely to have.
- 3:48You. Lovely to have you here?
- 3:49Next up, we have our witty, little nicer herself, Lucy
- 3:53calls, say Hello Lucy. Hello.
- 3:55I'm not sure we will pass the Bill test because that that test
- 3:59humorously applied in cartoonz and then seriously applied by
- 4:03the people. He's women talking about, Not
- 4:06men. And as there aren't many female
- 4:09characters in this season. Yeah, well past, but never mind.
- 4:12It's nice to be here. We can sort look at the women.
- 4:21There's four of them in this series.
- 4:23Yes. So there we are.
- 4:25Yes, got it. That's four women one.
- 4:28Yes, one speaking voice is one four women.
- 4:31You see, I can see a door when I Eyes.
- 4:35Unbelievable, isn't it? Yeah, there's one.
- 4:38It is for women and there's one speaking voice.
- 4:41So that makes technically five, right.
- 4:43I was on the fence about one story, but I'm going in the oven
- 4:45and she is now and she is the high Minister as well.
- 4:48So she is, you know, as Harry says, top of the totem pole,
- 4:51which is not a particularly PC comment, but there we go.
- 4:55Moving on, let's introduce my co-host, who isn't Joe?
- 4:59Because he's taking a day off. Lazy, little toe rag.
- 5:01Please welcome Elliott mayor. Welcome Elliott's.
- 5:04Your first strictly isn't it? Second, second strictly.
- 5:08Oh sorry. No, don't don't apologize.
- 5:10I'm the happy to be joined by bunch of homo sapiens.
- 5:14It's good and I've got no beef with anybody but I'm looking
- 5:18forward to maybe starting some rivalries I guess.
- 5:21Oh. You got so with you today, and
- 5:27we should also introduce our first fifth panelist Mr. Joe
- 5:31Ford, the selfless himself. Hello.
- 5:36How are you? Serious.
- 5:40My voice etcetera. Hello to be here.
- 5:46Just put my feet up now. So to let you two Charming
- 5:49gentleman take the reins today, although, can I just say it just
- 5:52a quick note? Yeah, because Lucy McCollum and
- 5:55Joshua. Martin favorite women on this
- 5:57entire planet to have them both here together.
- 5:59Today is that particularly for me, Thank you.
- 6:04Look at them. Both looking bashful.
- 6:06Now honestly they are the most English people.
- 6:09I know. Absolutely.
- 6:12Absolutely. Yeah, with apologize to be, it
- 6:15really apologize for being here. Probably in a minute ago, I'm
- 6:18here. So, um, before we start ripping
- 6:22these five stories apart, what are, what are our overview
- 6:26overall comments or thoughts about this season?
- 6:29And I'm going to ask Joe first me, so, oh no, this is gonna be
- 6:37going. Yeah, it's gonna keep using a
- 6:39confused already Joe with a knee.
- 6:40Hey, yeah, yes, I am. Yes, well, I've just written
- 6:46down out with the successful old in with the possibly slightly
- 6:51more successful new. I think there is a fresh sense
- 6:55of horror and dynamism and a creeping sense of dread in the
- 7:00universe that comes in this season.
- 7:01It's a lot more brutal. I'm going to say it's a lot less
- 7:06fun as well. Doctor Who going forward I think
- 7:10this is a really good season over.
- 7:13Overall, but there's just a feeling that we're not quite
- 7:16there yet two of these on, definitely going to ditch one,
- 7:19I'm on the fence with which means in a season of five,
- 7:22that's possibly free on thrown in the bin.
- 7:25So I think, I think there's good things in this year, but I don't
- 7:29think Hinchcliffe is quite there yet.
- 7:30Okay, Joe, without any I'm very similar to.
- 7:36Over the knee. It's just like Tom hits the
- 7:40floor running which is good, you know, because, you know, you
- 7:42want to be some doctors, you know, they take a while to sort
- 7:46of develop but he seems to like oh I'm here right now.
- 7:51Um, but I had certain issues, is it the obvious slack of women?
- 7:57And I worry about characterization of Sarah is a
- 8:02lot of things I have issues with about her and sort of like, But
- 8:07she regresses a character after the sort of, you know, really
- 8:10good first season with Percy, is a lot more I know looking at it.
- 8:16Now, you know, I did season in 22 and everyone goes all the
- 8:19violence in that violence in that.
- 8:21But this violence in, this is pretty, it starts to get pretty
- 8:25nasty. You know, I'm not, you know,
- 8:27he's got very, very, you know, serious issues.
- 8:31You got the fascism, you got racism, you got racial Purity.
- 8:34So obviously they've got very, very serious issues.
- 8:37There's not one I hate and it's not when I love.
- 8:39This is a, this is going to be really, really difficult because
- 8:42I could either put through or check out all of things.
- 8:47You know, I'm very much on the fence, you know, it's going to
- 8:49be quite interesting how I actually do decide as we go
- 8:53along. It's because I'm not, I'm not
- 8:55coming in here going. I want my one to win or I don't
- 8:59want something. I'm, you know, I would be I will
- 9:03be disappointed with any of the winning or any of them getting
- 9:06thrown out. So I'm very interested to see
- 9:09how this goes. So I mean, take this whatever
- 9:12way you want to take, it does that mean you're open to
- 9:15persuasion? The wise I don't know what's
- 9:21happened. Severe that I'll get more
- 9:22heterosexual for the minute and Elliott.
- 9:25What's, what do you thoughts? It's I've I was gonna I was
- 9:31gonna be like, I'll keep powder dry, but I think this is I think
- 9:34this is a really, really great season.
- 9:36I got a lot of love for for this.
- 9:39I mean there are still it's a year where I could keep
- 9:42everything but there is two that I think I'd lean more on the
- 9:45fence of kind of binning. But even then I don't think
- 9:48anything is like offensively bad.
- 9:50There are definitely issues with the season.
- 9:52I think notably as as Joe and Joe have made, and the lack of
- 9:56women in this season is noticeable.
- 9:59Um, and yeah, I just Echo sentence around Sarah's
- 10:04character, but I think it is really great.
- 10:07It's not the kind of Doctor Who you could do all the time.
- 10:09I think what makes it special, is it kind of, you know, it
- 10:11feels almost all like a a one-off.
- 10:14I mean, this isn't 13 but I think, you know it it's not,
- 10:18it's not it's not Doctor Who I would want, every single season
- 10:21to be, but I think that makes it kind of feel special and I have
- 10:24a lot of nostalgia, for, as well because this was the first full
- 10:27season of classic that I have ever actually watched Thanks to
- 10:30the the collection box at ranges so I didn't frighten you away
- 10:35then know if I I remember being really yeah.
- 10:38Unsure if I was gonna like it or not and actually Know fully the
- 10:43fully loved it. Fully signed up and now it's an
- 10:45unhealthy Obsession. So I love that.
- 10:47That floppy wrist. Robot going.
- 10:49Oh was your first exposure to the classic who you like?
- 10:53Now sign me up. Well, I get powder dry on that
- 10:56story but I've got a figure of him downstairs.
- 10:58So oh, is that a Genesis to? Like I can see on your, on your
- 11:02case, on your bookcase behind you.
- 11:04And that is genuinely always just sat there and I was
- 11:08actually gonna move the K1 robot up there as well to have a
- 11:10little diorama, but I forgot. But that is a Genesis doll.
- 11:14Look, Yes. Okay.
- 11:16No Lucy. What are your thoughts?
- 11:19Overall mixed? I think that there are some
- 11:22things that I think, what really?
- 11:23Well, there are parts of it that I kind of regret the way that
- 11:29the story takes them. And obviously, things like, I
- 11:33will talk about this later on, but things like unit, or
- 11:35obviously unsustainable with Thomas, the doctor because he's
- 11:38such a different doctor. He doesn't need the stories are
- 11:42going to go in different direction but the sort of the
- 11:45decline of unique is something like sort of regret.
- 11:49Because I really like them, but I can see that that one works.
- 11:52All these have to move on. I also regret that the she
- 11:58continues to show bravery and Ingenuity.
- 12:01Sarah's character is becoming more or less of a kind of an
- 12:09individual and more of a female character just, you know, female
- 12:14character. We'll talk about my opinion on
- 12:20Harry in and how he works or doesn't work later on.
- 12:22I think so. There's definitely one that I
- 12:25really can't see the point of at all in this season and it kind
- 12:30of comes up against. Yes, I do like watching violent
- 12:34films and I like Vengeance on virus.
- 12:36Now I didn't want when I was a kid but I there are some things
- 12:41in this season where I just think what what's the point of
- 12:45that particular episode except to be lost?
- 12:49And if there isn't necessarily a point to it, then I don't I
- 12:56don't get it really. Um, there were things that I
- 12:59like that other people definitely don't like judging by
- 13:01the comments but that's, that's usual.
- 13:03So yeah, it's a bit Like some of it works and some of it works
- 13:08later on and some of it for me, doesn't work at all.
- 13:10So a mixture, one of the things about this, looking at it in the
- 13:14context is that we forget how much of a gamble this season was
- 13:17because Peart, we had been huge as the doctor.
- 13:21They'd been five very successful years.
- 13:24I mean, even after he left the show, I mean he was always
- 13:28complaining about Typecast but we was, wasn't he?
- 13:30But if you turn up on blankie blank, wearing a red velvet
- 13:32shirt and a friendly red velvet jacket and a really sure what
- 13:35you expect and Tom wasn't a big name and I think, you know,
- 13:41looking at some of the sort of contemporary, so reviews and
- 13:44audience audience research that he wasn't accepted. and you can
- 13:50and I can kind of see why because he is so he they are so
- 13:57they're Polar, Opposites both in real life and on screen and
- 14:02there are certainly in Rabat there are sometimes when you
- 14:04think That's a line and Tom's really sort of working against
- 14:09it because he didn't want to do the smug, you know.
- 14:11Pompous although Tom can be pompous as a doctor.
- 14:16But he's like you said Joe, he hits the ground running.
- 14:21Yes. Sarah in this season because
- 14:24she's sharing the Limelight with Harry is not the co-lead that
- 14:29she was in some stories in season 11.
- 14:32I'd argue probably have first two stories, she's quite very
- 14:36strong in that but certainly death the dialects Nation
- 14:39doesn't really do female characters, really?
- 14:42Does he as we'll see later on the Blake 7?
- 14:47Yeah. I, but as from from the
- 14:50nostalgic point of view, this is this is comfort food.
- 14:54Doctor for me, I will quite happily sit and watch all of
- 14:58these episodes and and not have a car.
- 15:02Yes, I know there were issues with them.
- 15:04And I think yeah, absolutely agree with what you said about
- 15:07the lack of female representation.
- 15:08There are no persons of color in this season as far as I can
- 15:12remember. And certainly when you look at
- 15:15ARC in space, that is a huge problem.
- 15:18Bearing in mind that, you know, that says all colors and
- 15:22unfortunately been hasn't read the script and is all you know,
- 15:26they're all white car, white actors.
- 15:30But yeah, I as it just takes me back to to my childhood as well.
- 15:34Say Charles Hood sort of late teens, getting all the stories
- 15:37on video on VHS and And listening to the LP of Genesis,
- 15:43the Daleks. So I think I will, if I'm going
- 15:47to be controversial, I have to force myself to be controversial
- 15:50and force myself to be strict on these stories.
- 15:55Otherwise, it's just going to be a love information.
- 15:57Can I be a contentious bugger from me off?
- 16:01Because I never normally ice permission disagree strongly
- 16:05with three of you and something that you've all agreed on.
- 16:08I think Elisabeth. Sladen.
- 16:09And Sarah Jane Smith in this season is vital to the stories.
- 16:14The stories, I think work. I think she's absolutely vital
- 16:17to their success. And I really want to get into
- 16:20that one. I'll talk about those stories, I
- 16:21think. If she wasn't in this season, I
- 16:24wasn't depicted the way she is. Those stories would fall apart
- 16:28all, they would lose something. That makes them work to the
- 16:31story. She is, is as strong as she is
- 16:33in season 11. One.
- 16:37Definitely not. To possibly under the
- 16:40circumstances. Yeah. but that's Yeah.
- 16:46Well we'll talk about that. Anyway, let's have a look at our
- 16:49overall comments and Joe and Lucie.
- 16:52Would you like to read our first batch of overall comments
- 16:55please? Okay, so first off we have
- 16:57Darren lit around us who says, it's kind of the archetypal.
- 17:01Dr. Who season, but I wouldn't call it a favorite, of course,
- 17:05my season 12 is a cracking WCS and Tom Baker, who is
- 17:09magnificent from the outset and throughout Abba supported by Ian
- 17:13Martin and Liz Slade and what a tardis team.
- 17:16I love the fact that each store, we flows into the next one of
- 17:19the very best seasons of who. Are the next.
- 17:22We have James Locke who's getting younger by the minute.
- 17:25Thank goodness. He was near death in the series.
- 17:294 Doctor Who's first story arc and the second Arc story.
- 17:33May not quite hit the consistent stride of Hinchcliffe and Holmes
- 17:36next to Seasons. But by golly, it's an impressive
- 17:39statement of intent and the team of the Doctor, Tom, Sarah and
- 17:43Harry have a joyous fresh chemistry, a little bit magical.
- 17:48Okay, Jason Thompson says, just like his predecessor.
- 17:51Tom Baker, gets the season. Unlike any of these that follow
- 17:54and it's brilliant. He said, he wasn't overly happy
- 17:58to have inherited a bunch of stories with returning monsters
- 18:00but he made the best of them and the results are great.
- 18:03The lovely pulled down season, 12 is probably the greatest
- 18:06first season of any doctor after season 7, Thomas assured from
- 18:10the word go, there's a variety of stories you can steal.
- 18:15You can still see the hands of fix slash lips in it but with
- 18:20the home with a hinge ship slash homes Darkness love.
- 18:24It's a bit. Oh dear.
- 18:27No, say how was it me? It's me, isn't it?
- 18:31Oh yes, I want to read this one. John Arnold controversy corner.
- 18:35It's become almost a definitive season of the 20th century Who
- 18:39full of the shows. Icons, Tom Liz, Dalek santara,
- 18:43and Cybermen. No wonder, it was the first
- 18:46season fully released on VHS and the first season out on Blu-ray.
- 18:51It's a bit of a shame then it's one of the weakest seasons of
- 18:54Doctor Who. John oh well.
- 18:58Dan Hollingsworth is once team? Philip get full control.
- 19:02And rewrite, most of the stories they've inherited.
- 19:04It works so very well, and he's one of the best baby doctors
- 19:07Seasons. Probably helped by Tom being the
- 19:10doctor and the doctor being Tom. He's an alien in real life,
- 19:12right? Sarah.
- 19:13And Harry, and marvelous. You're not the way the
- 19:17ingeniously used the time Wing, links stories to reuse the Arts
- 19:21in the same place in two different times, we have to
- 19:24thank Barry lit for Genesis because he told Nation.
- 19:27The original pitch was the same Dolly story as planet of and
- 19:30making up with the new story. Andrew says, dare I say
- 19:35contender for the best opening season for a doctor ever season
- 19:387 will be up their Great Performances throughout the
- 19:41season. The moment, Sarah Jane, and the
- 19:43doctor, at the end of robot, with the Jelly Babies captures,
- 19:46their friendship perfectly. Oh, you love him.
- 19:49When he takes it off Harry and Friends it back in the bag.
- 19:51I love it. Down in says, when all is not
- 19:55well in my life season 12 Doctor, Who is my absolute go-to
- 19:58had all of these are VHS when I was little and they literally
- 20:01saved my childhood. The child is Trio are adorable
- 20:04together. Perfect, balance of Earth and
- 20:06space settings. I even love the sun tower and
- 20:08experiment season 12 of his perfect in Brackets to me.
- 20:11Wow, saved my childhood. Yeah.
- 20:14Wow houses Only Barnes the Golden Age begins.
- 20:20Different homes, make the markings style, cozy Adventures
- 20:23of let's give them away to Gothic horror and his glorious.
- 20:28Never want to avoid controversy. James hadwin, Bennett comes in
- 20:33with where, who's inability to decide if it's an anthology
- 20:36series collapses in on itself, the season works because of the
- 20:40leads, not the stories, even the doctor is unpleasant to his
- 20:43companions at times and everything suffers from the hype
- 20:47of the 80s, It's when everybody was looking back and saying, you
- 20:51know, jnt said is, you know, the memory Chief.
- 20:53Oh, sorry, James. Yeah.
- 20:55That's actually a very good. I mean, you were getting a lot
- 20:58of Hinchcliffe stories out on VHS in the 80s.
- 21:01Weren't you so good? No wrong.
- 21:04Could it in her? I'm not we who was just being
- 21:06crap on from a great height at the same time outrageous.
- 21:13I'm apologize. If I don't pronounce your name
- 21:15properly. House.
- 21:17Possibly k a h u s h u s c. H, is it one of the best
- 21:22seasons? Absolutely, Tom listen, Ian a
- 21:24practically feeding off each other in a totally slight
- 21:26season. The stories of will produce the
- 21:29ark is never forced on anything production wise and the
- 21:32coalstone crew are just absolutely well-rounded for the
- 21:34stories. John L A oh IX, not too sure
- 21:41whether One. Okay, two great three good, four
- 21:47long and two dominant time. Five six.
- 21:52Yeah I love A Brief Review straight to the point.
- 21:58Maybe I should get him on this thing.
- 21:59You know we might be done in an hour.
- 22:02Um eight stays that's that's the John Arnold son.
- 22:06Eddie says season 12 in two words, very mediocre.
- 22:10Oh, this is what you Should not hurt.
- 22:15Well, it was the same as his father's opinion, as well.
- 22:17Isn't it obviously been a little bit?
- 22:20Yeah. Luke seems Jenkins says the best
- 22:23season since 7 and a breath of fresh air as a couple of
- 22:26Clunkers. But the combo of the fourth
- 22:28doctor series, and Harry can make anything.
- 22:30Watchable and fun. The wonderful thing named, Matt
- 22:32Paddington. Look, it's not exactly in a
- 22:36controversial opinion, but this season is just magic.
- 22:38Isn't it a lot while it and key to time with the only classic
- 22:43Seasons I'd seen in full? Not been too familiar with the
- 22:46show at the time. I just assumed it was all like
- 22:48this this season runs beautifully, the truly golden
- 22:52season of Tilly and then there's revenge of the Cybermen too.
- 22:56Oh, Andy Parkinson. Finally says, a very strong
- 23:05first season for Tom whilst the opening story has a very strong.
- 23:08He looks very strong, very strong, Third Doctor filled the
- 23:11rest of the season already Bears, the Hallmark of
- 23:14Hinchcliffe homes era. It might not be the best season
- 23:16of TOMS zero. It's got some epic stories and
- 23:19even the week one, which is unnamed, here isn't bad.
- 23:24We've got a different week. One in mine.
- 23:26Doesn't we must think we have? Yes.
- 23:28So let's start on our story so don't rush it once.
- 23:33Oh good first. Oh really see.
- 23:37Okay, I saw an experiment in the bin, oh, Thanks.
- 24:03For. Well it's it's obviously all a
- 24:07personal View and I'm sure others will have opposing views
- 24:11to that, and that's absolutely fine.
- 24:12But this is the story that I was talking about where I said, I
- 24:16don't really see what it's for. It apart from to provide a gap
- 24:20in time between the arcing space and revenge of the Cybermen.
- 24:26We're on an apparently deserted apart from some South African
- 24:32astronauts. And us on Turin. who is doing
- 24:38horrible things to humans in order to find out their
- 24:41weaknesses and that's it. so what we're watching is, People
- 24:47having horrible things done to them torture porn.
- 24:50Oh I mean I know I know it makes me hypocritical because I do
- 24:54like Vengeance on various but I feel like there's more kind of
- 24:58behind that than there is behind this.
- 25:01It just feels in that particular season.
- 25:03It feels like an oddity its just oh, we're on Earth.
- 25:07Terrible things happen. We go back into space again.
- 25:10What what was that, what the bit that I do like is when the
- 25:14sontara and deflates? I think we should bring back.
- 25:16Deflating is on tolerance personally that that's my
- 25:19favorite part and you do get a little bit of seeing Harry being
- 25:22Doctor Harry rather than Inexplicably deemed Harry, but
- 25:28for the rest of it, just when I was watching it, I don't have
- 25:32sort of the childhood Nostalgia attracted to this because I
- 25:35watched them first. As far as I can remember, I was
- 25:38an adult. When I watched them first,
- 25:39though, there are some things that I have vague memories of
- 25:42possibly from repeats. It just felt a bit.
- 25:47Sort of insubstantial and not really.
- 25:52Serving any purpose other than to provide a buffer between the
- 25:54other two stories. So I'm so I would like to meet
- 25:59We've Vengeance, right? You get, you get the whole
- 26:02political structure of the planet, don't you?
- 26:04You get our connector watching it and commentating on the
- 26:07action. There's just so many layers to
- 26:09the torture form. There isn't there?
- 26:11I mean, he doesn't really in a lot of ways Vengeance, and
- 26:13various also doesn't really work because it is having their cake
- 26:16wanting to have their cake and eat it.
- 26:17So like violence on Terraria, television is terrible.
- 26:20All look violence. This is about you except it's
- 26:23not really and the whole social structure doesn't really work
- 26:26either and there's lots of things wrong with it but it has
- 26:30very, very strong performance. Is from Nabil Shaban and Martin
- 26:34Javis who I think raise the level of And calling is faring
- 26:41on all cylinders. This is another thankless
- 26:43episode for Perry because she gets so carted off turned into a
- 26:47bird or not and then back again, so that that doesn't really.
- 26:50But the three, the male leads, all raise it.
- 26:54A little because of their performance is in their
- 26:57commitment to it and I don't I just don't I don't know, I just
- 27:00don't see what he's for really soaring experiment, but please
- 27:03do contradict me. Oh, we will, I'm sure.
- 27:09Okay, so let's go to our viewer, comments.
- 27:11Elliott, would you like to start us off, please?
- 27:14Sure. The first one is from James
- 27:17Locke who says slight, but some of my favorite Doctor Who is
- 27:21Doctor, Who in at a adventure that looks like the kind of walk
- 27:24you did on holiday and it looks like he's going on.
- 27:27A wonderful walking Devon in the company of three of your most
- 27:29charismatic, friends. Oh, and some people doing
- 27:31accents. okay, I just asked you to choose this to start off
- 27:36because I want to say, give me a big Give me an orange.
- 27:48A good story made better by Martin's Target.
- 27:51Novel sandwich between two Classics.
- 27:53It gets, it's easily gets overlooked but that's a shame
- 27:56location for me, for the win. Yes, I'm keeping it too.
- 27:59I would not even know. Big article, he could be an
- 28:02absolute nutcase for all know, but all I know.
- 28:05It's a Fanfare. Every episode on this thing.
- 28:09I think he's American, isn't he? Because he seems he seems to put
- 28:13a pleasant person from the rest of his social media posts.
- 28:16Oh yeah. For that, it could be Donald
- 28:18Trump and not guys. Not like the other Big Orange
- 28:22over there. Yes, you'll see it on the news
- 28:25and even on a hamster. Will blunt pen knife in England,
- 28:29they praise me to the High Heavens.
- 28:31No, certainly not. We would not expect that.
- 28:35I apologize to people suggesting that I apologize, greatly.
- 28:41We not expect this level of of Humanity's, from the other
- 28:47person. Yeah.
- 28:50A full dancers, a nice little story that really benefits from
- 28:54being all location. It doesn't overstay, its welcome
- 28:57at two parts. Overall, it's pretty
- 28:59unmemorable. And once, you know, Terry Walsh
- 29:01is doing all the fight scenes, that's all you can see.
- 29:02And Anthony Carroll, best two-parter in classic Who very
- 29:06Bleak worm 8 out of 10. What does he say worm?
- 29:10Oh, cuz Tire says wow. Yes.
- 29:13Oh yes. Glenn Fitzgerald a nice little
- 29:23story. If I haven't got the time or
- 29:25attention span for something longer than this is my go-to a
- 29:28great entire performance from Kevin's and it's a nice easy
- 29:31storyline to follow personally. I cannot fault it even with the
- 29:35robot with its DIY Shop parts that look like the Terminator.
- 29:48So I mean see It's a lot better than that one, isn't it?
- 29:51Oh, here they got marriage. You know, Charlie, those two
- 29:54robots eventually. Yeah, that's where the one book
- 30:02Rogers came from. Miss the bus stop spring?
- 30:04Isn't he twiki or Worse? Oh my God, are you suggesting
- 30:08that squeaky is the next robot. Oh, that's thinking about quick.
- 30:16Movers on Daniel, maybe? Right.
- 30:18James Avery Gonna Keep it as it's pretty to look at.
- 30:24Thanks to the inspired location work.
- 30:25Even though the plot makes no sense to me, in the context of
- 30:28the Ark Ark. I prefer the idea of the plot
- 30:31though. Another reason to keep it.
- 30:33Oh, I wonder if he's gonna be mean about the orchestra.
- 30:40Michael storm says it's a bit slight and rather says District,
- 30:43but it's done. But it does.
- 30:44Its job is a nasty piece of work, but he doesn't strike me
- 30:47as being particularly sometime early.
- 30:49Sarah's worst outing for the season, and she's reduced to a
- 30:52damsel in distress. Good episode for Harry though,
- 30:54keep a very quick note for Michael storm who are regularly,
- 30:58you know, see that for being my Nemesis.
- 31:01Michael, you've hit a month. Fantastic work, keep going.
- 31:06Anyone social media will know, that's about yeah.
- 31:09So yes. Well done.
- 31:10Well done. Michael.
- 31:11Yeah. John Arnold.
- 31:13There's a nasty Street to the sun tower and experiment which
- 31:16I've always found off-putting Stars one of the nastiest
- 31:19characters in the show's history.
- 31:20Sadist with no real need to hang around on a nearly deserted
- 31:24Planet who gets to deserve to come up and Peter.
- 31:28Old, all the things stick with that.
- 31:32It's okay story, but with massive plot floors.
- 31:35Why didn't start rain over? Why didn't they asked doc there?
- 31:39How does that robot thing for inside Stars spaceship Central
- 31:45Market close to, I'm obviously something in that, you know,
- 32:07from around in the golden finding the sons, Are you fed up
- 32:13of drippy crinkly soggy clothes? Want to find the hottest
- 32:17sunspots in town to are your smiles then look no further than
- 32:21stay as robot clothes airer. He's collapsible.
- 32:25He's mobile and he'll rope in innocent astronauts to help the
- 32:29folding and putting away Stiers robot, you're a lipstick laundry
- 32:35friends. Lucy quick tmtm.
- 32:42Oh Chris. Another one not helped by over
- 32:47lovely location. Work being done on OB.
- 32:49There's something about this that is just a bit too nasty for
- 32:53me at times, it seems to be being sadistic for the sake of
- 32:57it and that's not for me. Jason, Thompson's says,
- 33:00experiment is a flimsy little two part of the makes no sense.
- 33:03Why just I care about taking humans ahead of an assault on
- 33:07Earth? When the earth is empty, and he
- 33:08had to lure a few down to do it in the first place, but looks
- 33:11gorgeous on location. It's the meth one of the Season
- 33:14though. Oh, here we go.
- 33:16Tim Carter, this is a great little two-parter.
- 33:18The location is a character in its own, right?
- 33:20Kevin Lindsey is great again, but the mask isn't as good as
- 33:23links is the only dodgy thing is the robot entertaining and
- 33:27doesn't outstate as well. Come keep serious, right?
- 33:31I don't have enough uninflated monsters for the That's what I
- 33:37think I did. I did know I mean I didn't
- 33:39really want to bring it up because of who's in charge of
- 33:41that show but in a fixed for the sontarans does have deflate in
- 33:44sontarans as well, it And green goo, which we love a bit about
- 33:49that too. Yes.
- 33:51That's not the the defense of the deflation that you think it
- 33:55is. Although really watch it
- 34:01officials on Tara and santara experiments suddenly is a real
- 34:04winner. Paul spices, maybe the best
- 34:08two-parter in, who love this one.
- 34:10Kevin linsey's greater style. The location work is suitably
- 34:13Bleak and Atmospheric a gem. David Gillespie, Pratt, nasty,
- 34:19brutish, and short, and Rick. Sorry.
- 34:21This is what he's saying. I'm not calling David nasty,
- 34:25British assured and really good too.
- 34:27A wonderful use of location. And a story with a very unique
- 34:30atmosphere and excellent follow-up to Arc.
- 34:33He's actually very tall. We know our story recently at
- 34:36Riverside and very impressively tall, man.
- 34:39David lesbian. Oscar Groucho, says excellent.
- 34:42Use of Dartmoor Obi hiding. The fact that there is very
- 34:45little here that hasn't been seen before.
- 34:47Apparently, roundels silly plots, but in atmospheric
- 34:51opening episode, the kind of story he can play as a kid went
- 34:54out in the countryside with friends.
- 34:55All your children, torturing your, friends for fun.
- 35:02I mean, I just wanna I might pull Quinn who you fuck off with
- 35:07recently Lucy when I was sort of five years old, we used to play
- 35:11doctor and the back garden and you just tied me up to the chair
- 35:14all the time. I was always the companion.
- 35:16He was always the doctor and the monster.
- 35:18I got all the choice roles because he was older and I'm
- 35:21like I'll feed back now. I think why did you tell me what
- 35:24to a cheer so much but because I was always Perry, you know, I
- 35:28think that explains a lot. Thanks and for every day.
- 35:36Yeah. And rounding us out.
- 35:39Madding says perfect link for this story, a neat little
- 35:42vignette. That doesn't require any more
- 35:44than these two episodes. I love that.
- 35:46There's no real escalation from Time Warner.
- 35:47It's still just once on her and Apologies, everybody for the
- 35:51language. Fucking it up again.
- 35:52He'd already talked to apologize for language on this podcast.
- 35:55I don't read that one out because I have a 10 year old
- 35:59just in the same room as me. So that would have been yes.
- 36:02Sorry. I'll write a song, constantly
- 36:08interrupted but also put a quick request about mad Paddington.
- 36:10Yeah, I know you're listening to this.
- 36:12We want to know just how much you are, how far is your depth
- 36:15of psychosis, can you please get in touch with this?
- 36:18Episode goes out, let us know because I have no idea.
- 36:21Just, I don't know that is He's been judging from the comments.
- 36:25He's not that bad. No, but it comes from its from
- 36:28the store Beast, isn't it? Because Donna says, my padding
- 36:31calls, the calls the meat Madness.
- 36:34Yeah yeah. It all goes back to the Doctor
- 36:38Who well that let us know please.
- 36:41And so who would like to is there anyone who would like to
- 36:44offer a spirited defense? Yes, Lucy's comments.
- 36:49Come on. And Joe, I would love to offer
- 36:51complete agreement to Lucy and I think this should be bent, so
- 36:56because I tell you why, I really like Dr. Who says, yeah.
- 37:00I really like How imaginative they can be with very little
- 37:05money and I think there's like really cozy about Dr. Who
- 37:09insets, in a BBC studio and I realize I'm being really fucking
- 37:13ungrateful to say, well how dare you go outside and two episodes
- 37:16and give us this beautiful location work but there's
- 37:20something a bit flat about it and and I think everybody on
- 37:24location gives a more naturalistic performers and they
- 37:27do in the studio. And I love that sort of
- 37:30theatrical. We go watch your Ark in space
- 37:32and everyone's a bit theatrical win that.
- 37:34It's like a stage play. Go and watch sontaran
- 37:36experiment. It is like Telly.
- 37:38That's what. I'll tell you where, everyone's
- 37:40dialed down a little bit. I don't think there's any
- 37:43interesting guest characters in this.
- 37:45All of the people being tortured are very boring.
- 37:48I don't think we learn anything about them so they don't make an
- 37:51impact. Like the best guest characters
- 37:52do this year and I think even style lacks substance as a
- 37:57villain and and not really a decent motive as well so I don't
- 38:01really understand. Why he's doing what he's doing
- 38:04the obvious stunt double for Tom, you were soon as you see
- 38:09that week, you just can't unsee it, can you?
- 38:11And I don't like two parts either.
- 38:14I, there's not a two-parter in Doctor Who writ on back in on,
- 38:17because I just don't think you've got enough time to tell
- 38:20the sort of Storytelling they would do you at the time.
- 38:22And so, yeah. It's, it's insubstantial as well
- 38:27just kind of on every level. I put this on and two episodes
- 38:30sort of fly by but without much exciting incident without the
- 38:36things I love about classic Doctor Who, which is the
- 38:39substance of the stories, telling the idea is the guest
- 38:43characters and the atmosphere I don't know it's all just gone so
- 38:47yeah it me whoever said near is right.
- 38:50There's nothing substantially wrong with it.
- 38:52I just don't find it particularly interesting.
- 38:54So not for me. I'm with Lucy.
- 38:56Joe. What do you thoughts?
- 38:59I'm just I think he's got. I like it being Out.
- 39:03Because mainly, because I think it looks really good.
- 39:06Um, it's nice to have accents in October.
- 39:09They will say if we can but it's nice to have sort of like non,
- 39:13you know, non Shakespearean. You know, we see ocean.
- 39:18I think it's quite interesting that they have that and also
- 39:20it's very taken it serious. I like the fact is a nice theme
- 39:24about, you know, this passage of the colonization because all the
- 39:29South African skirts. What says it's a call?
- 39:33They're all saying, you know, oh well, you were the ones who
- 39:37pocket off into space and Supply, you know, all these
- 39:39people on nerve, you know, nothing.
- 39:41You know, this sort of like everyone's this.
- 39:42So there's similar things in there.
- 39:45It's like in the ark they look upon the people from the past
- 39:49and being inferior. And you know, it's a whole
- 39:51racial Purity thing which does seem to be run throughout this
- 39:55season. I don't like torture to be
- 39:57honest. This is the one I can't actually
- 40:01Because I'm old I can remember. This is these two episodes.
- 40:04The only ones I can actually have memories of because I have
- 40:07this memory or watching, you know, all this song.
- 40:11Say I don't like to talk to them and says a bit horrible, sort of
- 40:15very sort of again, not Susan. Japanese war experiments to see,
- 40:20you know what, the opponents are like, I don't like that.
- 40:25I don't like, you know, there's bits.
- 40:27I like, I like, I like the fact that the South Africans, look,
- 40:31look like they've been. They look, filthy, they look
- 40:34horrible. They're not all pristine and
- 40:36they're nice spacesuits. They look like, they're being
- 40:38through absolute hell on this planet, which is unusual because
- 40:41usually you know, you go to these, you know, the space here.
- 40:44Lovely hair and everything. Well Joe compared to the
- 40:47thousands in Planet of the darling.
- 40:49They look like they stepped from a shampoo commercial, that's
- 40:52really nice. I think, maybe because of the
- 40:55location, you know, they can look for him and walk like, you
- 40:58know, Stubble and beards and I, but they're horrible boss.
- 41:02You don't really care if they do tortured.
- 41:04I hate the way they look. So make sure looks stupid that
- 41:08bit at the beginning why she upside down on being trapped?
- 41:12Why she not in the bloody transmitter being that really
- 41:16annoys me that makes her look stupid and that really bugs me,
- 41:20you know, all she's up. Oh silly woman she can't even
- 41:23believe that really really The robot, I mean, did you know the
- 41:29fact that she goes? It was links, you can't be
- 41:33links. We blew you up, that makes you
- 41:35look stupid or racist, which is next.
- 41:37Because if we, if we explained the sometimes the Clones.
- 41:43Yeah. I don't think so.
- 41:45I think it is mentioned in the time.
- 41:46Warrior. Yeah.
- 41:47Is it? I mean, even so you know, I
- 41:49can't even remember that. Just makes her look a bit and it
- 41:54doesn't look that much like although he's visibly a son or
- 41:57he doesn't like opposite, obviously, it's the same person
- 42:01like it, but it's different and he doesn't know.
- 42:03I don't like it when I make, you know.
- 42:05Just stupid and that sort of like all I don't do that.
- 42:10What you said that, you know that issue with quite a handful.
- 42:13I was just thinking I have a character's where in one hand,
- 42:18but stupid on the other hand there a bit racist, know I have
- 42:21a direction is great. No, I think you just been
- 42:25delayed by people working quite funny because that's just like
- 42:30that's just like button. That's not something this.
- 42:37Why are they having a stupid survey of the supposedly empty
- 42:40planet that they want to why? so again, as Lucy said, This
- 42:46whole it doesn't make any sense. It's what it is.
- 42:49Literally one of those two part filler episodes.
- 42:51This is, all right. This season's edge of
- 42:54Destruction, you forget about being cold the admin Invasion,
- 42:59basically all like all ticket boxes but in boxes, if there was
- 43:04a doctor story called ticking boxes are all over that.
- 43:07And once again, they prove that you should never collaborate
- 43:13with the aliens because it's never going to end well for
- 43:15anybody. Oh, I don't know.
- 43:18I'm gonna bin it. Oh, it's sort of like I said,
- 43:25it's nasty brutish and short which would be the summer
- 43:29solicitors. That one day I will find.
- 43:30It does have a great Cliffhanger though, doesn't it?
- 43:33That music Dudley Simpsons right now.
- 43:39But yeah. Oh my God.
- 43:41What is everyone gonna just like this?
- 43:42That's why. Now, I don't know if you want to
- 43:45go next. I mean, what we decided is
- 43:47immaterial because it's three versus two, so we're gonna be
- 43:51five straight pins. Well, From from my perspective,
- 43:56definitely. it's I'm I am grateful on the one hand that we
- 44:03don't have another six partner because sometimes they can get
- 44:06Leo, get the rather themselves and become a Beyond really.
- 44:09But I mean, this is not a particularly engaging two part
- 44:13as it's two parts. But it feels for me.
- 44:15It's the only story. This isn't that feels so
- 44:17stretched thin that I'm I'm bored halfway through episode
- 44:20one and it feels like a slog to get through the rest of it a
- 44:26lot. Sorry it got the space and
- 44:38they're not and then this season in the episodes are very long,
- 44:40you know? And it's often like lots of
- 44:42Recaps in the episodes they're not long episode.
- 44:45You know this sort of all under like 25 minutes.
- 44:48There's a lot of money around and climbing in those 24
- 44:52minutes. He just think, you know, you're
- 44:54trying to pad out two episodes and that doesn't bode well for
- 44:57anybody if you're having to hide it out with people climbing up.
- 45:01Some money no mountains. So, so yeah.
- 45:03Yeah, no. I mean, I totally agree.
- 45:05If you having to pan out two episodes, it's a bad sign.
- 45:07And I normally quite like the two Powers, I like, I like both
- 45:10Davison two. Parters of a black orchid fan.
- 45:13I think one of only two in existence, but, you know, I
- 45:17normally quite like, the, the pace that it brings, but I don't
- 45:20know everything. I think, maybe, maybe there's
- 45:22the lack of of Tom because we've broken collarbone.
- 45:25They're kind of feels like there's less of an injection of
- 45:27energy into it, but I don't know.
- 45:29I, it's, I know, it's it's Rodney Bennett carrying on from
- 45:34Ark in space, but I think that it's nice to go outside, but I
- 45:38think that you Joe with any who said that you like you like
- 45:42sets. And I concur, I think it's
- 45:46basically pointless to be filming this outside, you know,
- 45:48contrasting it with the moodiness, the the atmosphere of
- 45:52the Quarry in a later Story, how amazing that looks just for that
- 45:57brief scene and it's all just a bit flat and a bit bright.
- 46:00And I would rather some kind of weed set that you could control
- 46:04with with atmospheric lighting and and interest in it.
- 46:08But yeah, it's filmed on obviously.
- 46:13So it does look really flat. It's like someone out of a cam
- 46:17called whereas he Genesis is filmed on film and that sort of
- 46:22gorgeous stylish if this had been done on film.
- 46:25I have a different opinion. Buzzing.
- 46:29Again, I'm gonna go back and complete complete myself.
- 46:31Can you imagine this seemed like, you know, the studio
- 46:33jungle? I think that'd be terrible.
- 46:36If I put it in like, you know, right Kinder jungle we put your
- 46:40plants about, I think, you know, in a way being outdoors.
- 46:43You know, it's different, which is nice, you know.
- 46:45So but even even with like the Genesis say that the Quarry
- 46:50being shot on film, I don't know.
- 46:51I still think that we're not getting into Genesis the Daleks
- 46:55but flooding it with the with with the smoke just adds a
- 46:57little later. There is nothing atmospheric
- 46:59about the filming location. Here is just a rock in the
- 47:02middle of a field. Oh, it doesn't look for the
- 47:05particularly inspired. And I agree.
- 47:09I think it was, it was Joe not within.
- 47:11He was saying about Sarah and this story.
- 47:14And I think that even her outfit because the yellow raincoat and
- 47:19Woolly hat is almost infantilizing, her a little bit
- 47:23in in this story. Generally, I do quite like there
- 47:27in the season but yeah, I just can't really get on with it.
- 47:30So I'm gonna sit in the bin. Oh my God, it may be a clean
- 47:35sweep. You know, I watched this
- 47:38recently but I really can't remember much about it.
- 47:41It just it's and that's the problem.
- 47:44It's there's nothing really memorable.
- 47:46Yes there's there's the the Cliffhanger I think Dudley
- 47:51Simpson his music this season he's moving away from the
- 47:55synthesized era which I really don't like to go into more
- 47:58conventional music and trying to really ratchet up the tension.
- 48:03I think this season got his three of his best Soundtracks
- 48:09instant dental schools, it's a great story for Harry.
- 48:13He gets to be, you know, you see him trying to to care for one of
- 48:16the Stars victims and then when he finds the one that died, he
- 48:22goes wrong murdering and grabs a stick and goes to, if they'd
- 48:26have thoughts about it, why didn't they get Harry to
- 48:28Battlestar while the doctor does the bits for the with the storms
- 48:32are in spaceship? What you supposed to be there,
- 48:34isn't it? Yeah.
- 48:41Like I can't really add anything that hasn't been said Stars,
- 48:45just unpleasant and sadistic but that's all he is.
- 48:48There's just to make santara and sadistic I mean I think Kevin
- 48:54Lindsay does make him slightly different.
- 48:57From links and I'm not just talking about the extra digits.
- 49:00Completely agree with you about Sarah, she gets to do nothing
- 49:03apart from Stand Out in a very Very bright, yellow pack, and,
- 49:10and the hat as well. I like that.
- 49:15I like that as well. I like it when she puts it on an
- 49:20arc in space of a child about Sarah I think More than this,
- 49:31certainly more with with, with this season and later on.
- 49:34And then in series 11, I think we'll see season 11, I think
- 49:38where she's a fully grown Mature adult and treated as such low,
- 49:44could I disagree with you for a second?
- 49:47Because I think we don't like the fact that Sarah's tortured
- 49:52in this story. We don't like the torch porn
- 49:53here, but it wouldn't impact as much as it does.
- 49:56If Elizabeth played wasn't as good.
- 49:59I selling those moments where that sludges coming up her legs,
- 50:03and all that. She's so good in those things.
- 50:06Now, that's what they're aiming for in the episode and she sells
- 50:10it. So it's a success on every sort
- 50:12of quantifier level. Yeah, we just don't like it but
- 50:16she is crying. That's That's what that's what
- 50:19Barry Letts said about why he chose her, because she could
- 50:22show fear. And bravery, all in all in one
- 50:25go. And either way she she screams
- 50:27murderer at steyer, he's holding a gun for goodness sake.
- 50:31He could have just turned around and shot her, but she stands up
- 50:33to him for killing Roth or whatever his name is apart from
- 50:38the fact that this episode's mentioned in Michael Palin's
- 50:41Diaries. I don't think there's a lot else
- 50:43I can think of, that's interesting.
- 50:45I mean, yes, it looks good. if you like, The sequences on
- 50:52Dartmoor. I think if they'd have had a
- 50:54smoke machine or maybe sort of Made it look a bit darker.
- 50:58I mean, it's pouring with rain, isn't it?
- 51:01You can see in a lot of scenes, it's just there, it's not bad.
- 51:05It's just there, isn't it? So, Yeah let's bend it.
- 51:09You know what the location where it reminds me of that.
- 51:13Daniel the last time you talked on the strictly I believe it was
- 51:17season 26. There are Mars me that location
- 51:19working curse of been Rick, which is also extremely not
- 51:22atmospheric because a shot. Yes, And and during the daytime
- 51:27and with bright Sunshine. Yeah, and we've sort of obvious,
- 51:29right? And all the same reasons I think
- 51:32the other thing is as well, is that it's supposed to be a
- 51:35deserted Earth. But more land is not generally
- 51:39very popular as anyway. So what you get is an impression
- 51:43instead of getting an impression of a place where people were and
- 51:47should have been and Aunt anymore, I'm not saying they
- 51:51should have done it in a deserted City or something like
- 51:53that. But you don't get, I don't get
- 51:55any way some. What I get the sense of is a
- 51:58very small cast in a very big area and and looking like tiny
- 52:01little people and whereas if you had something even just a tiny
- 52:05thing that reflected the fact that it had been populated and
- 52:08wasn't anymore. That might have worked a bit
- 52:10better but I don't know. I'm telling a different story
- 52:13but think of those opening scene of invasion of the dinosaurs,
- 52:16you know, with that empty City that just impacts, doesn't it
- 52:20because even even a decade early convention Earth, you know, like
- 52:25Yeah we've been my dad's family come from around there so you
- 52:30better than they're walking on the courts is a lot of shorts.
- 52:32You know. Just think you know I'll be our
- 52:42final word on this is now it's called Walking on the shows.
- 52:48Yeah. There are lots of short British
- 52:51people in heaven and I'm related to most of them.
- 52:55Okay, so that's well. First story straight in the bin
- 52:59who would like to who would like to our Second Story.
- 53:01Oh I will. I chose someone.
- 53:03Go on and Joe. I'm gonna Champion mobile.
- 53:07I'm sure you've got the right man to look after him.
- 53:09Young Sullivan. Oh, he's very fine job.
- 53:11First class doctor seems a bit old-fashioned.
- 53:14Nothing wrong with that Mr. Smith Okay, this conflicts with
- 53:28my prime directive. Okay?
- 53:33So you know, it's the last one of the last two last few units,
- 53:39which is really in because we love, you know, and it's nice to
- 53:43see them there. This good.
- 53:45This is, this is almost. This is almost sitcom.
- 53:49You could put a lot of track on this and it would be perfect.
- 53:52I mean it has musical stings which do not.
- 53:55Anyway, it could be a sick on if you like, you know.
- 53:58Fairly secret army. You know you got all the funny
- 54:01fashions. We have the fascist Deirdre
- 54:12ball. I would Miss Winters.
- 54:14I mean, she's probably bloody horrible, isn't she?
- 54:17And, you know, she's horrible because even the bloody
- 54:20Brigadier, even the big idea hates up.
- 54:23It isn't dangerous, is it? Of course, not.
- 54:27Why should it be? Well, it just struck me.
- 54:29That it could be a very powerful weapon if it got into the wrong
- 54:31hands. It could be misused.
- 54:34Like this, you mean? This girl is an intruder.
- 54:40And the Spy. She must not leave here alive.
- 54:47Troy her, she's bloody horrible. she's crying and I and then it's
- 54:56got, its got Its pink marigolds which is just very cool.
- 55:01It's got kettlebell and he's incredible hair.
- 55:06Oh, she's been competent, *** poop.
- 55:10Exactly. It's got, you know, it's the
- 55:13start of Nazis in bunkers, which is always good as well, because
- 55:16that's gonna be a theme for the series.
- 55:18It's got the best sign ever. When they go into the robot
- 55:21thing and there's a son and daughter says positively no
- 55:24admittance, which just makes me laugh. it makes me laugh so much
- 55:29because you could show it just, I love the fact that we have, so
- 55:34we're being compassion. I know it's a whole King Kong
- 55:37thing, you know, where she's five and came along skin called,
- 55:40but shows, you know, her compassion for robot, she starts
- 55:44off. Okay, one she ends up in K9
- 55:46coincidence. Benson gets the promotion.
- 55:50Yeah. You'll get here finally bench
- 55:57and gets promoted which is brilliant.
- 55:59We just discovered the big deal to swinger where we've all
- 56:02thought about. I do it.
- 56:05Not in that sense, though. Well, what place was Somebody
- 56:11explain this to me? One of the episodes ago it goes
- 56:15up. She goes, she says how she
- 56:17thinks? Harry's Old Fashioned and he
- 56:19goes, oh no. A bit official myself.
- 56:21No, big deal. You're a swinger.
- 56:22Oh, There's Hope for me. Yes, towards the start of part
- 56:26one, I think. Yeah.
- 56:28I think she's talking in the sense that you're thinking, Joe.
- 56:31I know. Well, maybe, I don't know.
- 56:34Dream, both of you. You know, there are negatives.
- 56:38So it's just like, think tank as we typical with the invasion of
- 56:43dinosaur. Lots.
- 56:44Think of bloody useless and they're really, they're, like,
- 56:46reform the basically hanging loads of fascist hanging out in
- 56:49the Village Hall. they want to start a nuclear war and I have a
- 56:54check if they've got enough blue roles in the bunker which is
- 56:56just You know, if I was planning on taking over the world.
- 57:03So the fact that there's one person in Doctor Who has my
- 57:07surname in his bloody useless fascist, which really annoys the
- 57:11hell of me. He's that ridiculous, man, he
- 57:14stops it goes to sit at the table and his name is short and
- 57:17noises me. Um, you know, like it's that
- 57:21fella from invasion of the dinosaur who's house.
- 57:24Fanatical. What information?
- 57:29That's a journey. He is the terrible before he
- 57:34understood the Doctor Who he's got from being mad libs.
- 57:40Good. So we had such a terrible time
- 57:46in the demons. It's totally to a fascist as
- 57:48well. It's a dolly.
- 57:52He goes, he does right. Also, the chance, the chances of
- 57:56Miss Winters, Jellico and keter, will repopulate.
- 57:59The earth is the three lessons. Possibly unless I've got you
- 58:06know artificial insemination gun.
- 58:07The idea that's skipped into the future though just to see why
- 58:13might have looked like. No that's ridiculous.
- 58:19It's got a tiny tank which is not as bad as I must.
- 58:28Say it's a hangover you know, it could have been a poetry which
- 58:33is no bad thing but it's enjoyable.
- 58:36It's a fun story hits the floor running and I believe this
- 58:42wasn't the you know the he just hit the floor running you know.
- 58:44He just goes like underdogs and now.
- 58:48You know and it's enjoyable nonsense.
- 58:51So I say keep it Because we could do with some enjoyable
- 58:55notes and allies after, you know, you championed you know,
- 58:59such things as a Time, monster and time lash, I'm Fraser
- 59:05Gregory. You are no longer the champion
- 59:06to the ground and Ricky's title belt off him and he's getting
- 59:16very excited this right now, you know, right?
- 59:21Should we go to the comments? Ed best story of the Season
- 59:25hands down? James hadwin Bennett says a
- 59:30story about science that relies on Magic for the conclusion to
- 59:33make any sense. If they kept the robot nominal
- 59:36size, all the time, it would have been so much better.
- 59:38The doctor physically, assaults Harry, but no one seems to care
- 59:41unlike into Windows 11. However, Sarah actually does
- 59:44journalism and Harry is steed. Saves the story from the bin,
- 59:48And its themes are all still relevant.
- 59:50So keep I never thought about that.
- 59:54Actually he does physically. It's all Harry in this.
- 59:57He does he before. Why is that?
- 1:00:05Okay? That's not okay.
- 1:00:07Wow. Okay.
- 1:00:08He's about Well, it might is the moment where he finds him in the
- 1:00:13cupboard. So yeah.
- 1:00:14I think the skipping the edge of it.
- 1:00:20Maybe. Oh yeah.
- 1:00:21Maybe if he attacked period and amusing way we'd be like oh well
- 1:00:26just like chicken or something. Yeah, some kids toy you know
- 1:00:33listens you know. Yeah but it might be completely
- 1:00:39insane but that's a good point. It is Karen Evans.
- 1:00:43Enjoyable, even if it's a bit messy and silly, Matt Foy fun
- 1:00:49romp watching Tom duper we slash unit and so I think that's a
- 1:00:53different story shortly. Uncle Terry, do they not be able
- 1:00:56to do a giant robot convincingly?
- 1:00:57Oh man John Poe wolf. Okay.
- 1:01:01Sorry. Please open lens.
- 1:01:04Fitzgerald apart from the action man.
- 1:01:05Tank robot is a great 70s. ROM never will that design of
- 1:01:09the robot be better. It's almost classic 50s sci-fi
- 1:01:12movie Material a bit of unit and Bessie thrown in for into for a
- 1:01:18good season. No, ignore the film Crews
- 1:01:20reflection in the window and it's a good watch.
- 1:01:23Which window I've never know. Just a lot of Windows in here,
- 1:01:27isn't it? Besties to go back and watch it
- 1:01:33now find reflection? Yeah, look at a rude out, next.
- 1:01:37Oh boy. Paul Quinn says we're coming for
- 1:01:42you dicks. Ripping off basic elements of
- 1:01:45our characters and giving them to your sentient.
- 1:01:47But ultimately lethal and lovesick Metal Man, bonus points
- 1:01:51for his lovely voice. Take the metal Mickey and twiki
- 1:01:55you disco shit cans. He also say that that tweet was
- 1:02:00Illustrated with pictures of King Kong and Frankenstein's
- 1:02:02monster to, it was so they're the ones that are coming for
- 1:02:06parents and for ripping off their stories.
- 1:02:09Yeah, we can go and buy themselves.
- 1:02:22Yeah, we haven't. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:24Sorry, right. We're oh yeah Tim Carter a
- 1:02:30gentle open to the season standard unit standard unit fair
- 1:02:33but his elevated by the contrast with the new Doctor Tom grabs
- 1:02:36the part by the Scruff of the neck with a perfect mix of
- 1:02:39serious and humor. And the robot is robot is
- 1:02:41magnificent despite the dodgy see.
- 1:02:43So keep Clifford says an otherwise completely Peart.
- 1:02:48We eventually with Tom at the center completely changing it.
- 1:02:51Deep breath took the same ideas. That didn't do it as well.
- 1:02:57Andy Parkinson, very much, a remnant of the let's dicks era
- 1:03:01it nonetheless allows Tom's shine allowing us showing us the
- 1:03:05qualities that he will bring his relationship with this lady is
- 1:03:07instantaneous. And while the story isn't
- 1:03:10amazing, it this definitely gets us off to a good start.
- 1:03:12Keep it. Mad Paddington kettlewell is a
- 1:03:17Fabio type played beautifully, Sarah and Harry are off to a
- 1:03:20lovely Star as a pair and Tom Scoops up all that with Tom
- 1:03:24Scoops up. Scoops us all up with that
- 1:03:27smile. It's like a cow catcher that
- 1:03:30seen with Harry and the doctor skipping is a particular joy.
- 1:03:32For me, how he didn't have to skip to.
- 1:03:34He just panicked at the moment and it's gorgeous and A really
- 1:03:37lovely, not quite breakup story for the doctoring unit, but it
- 1:03:40plants the seeds to say that they've just Grown Apart and
- 1:03:43things are going to change. Keep That's a great job, man.
- 1:03:48Small like a cow culture. I love it.
- 1:03:50Luke seems Jenkins, I'm not huge on robot.
- 1:03:53It's a lane perfectly run around Thomas, great in it though.
- 1:03:55And makes it interesting. He hits the ground running but I
- 1:03:58tend just to skip this and go straight into Arc.
- 1:04:01He really hates poor way, though.
- 1:04:03He hates Fire, full cresses a great start.
- 1:04:06For Tom, even though is odd seeing him in.
- 1:04:08What is basically a perk we story and I don't think the OB
- 1:04:11filming Works in its favor, however, it isn't one.
- 1:04:14I go back to very often when I do, I always better than I
- 1:04:18remember, but at this point, I can't remember why.
- 1:04:21You were talking about the OB film work for Santana so I don't
- 1:04:23think that's true. I think it does work for robot.
- 1:04:25I think robot feels very stylish in comparison.
- 1:04:29It's a different sort of. It's a different thing though,
- 1:04:31isn't it? Because what, oh, the Obi in
- 1:04:34experiment doesn't necessarily work because it's not conveying
- 1:04:40the atmosphere that he's needed for it.
- 1:04:43Whereas robot is a lot more domestic.
- 1:04:46So not more colorful. Just in the sunshine, you've got
- 1:04:50here. He doesn't matter.
- 1:04:54Of it seems a lot brighter. You know, sometimes seems very
- 1:04:59well, I know, it sit on, like, more than mocks and everything,
- 1:05:02but it seems very flat. You know, that's, you know, a
- 1:05:06robot seems always something much more highly defined that
- 1:05:10giant robot in film work. I mean, Jesus Christ, you
- 1:05:14wouldn't be able to see the shine anyway, and Jason
- 1:05:16Thompson. Robot gives us a new doctor in a
- 1:05:18familiar setting, and quickly establishes that this one
- 1:05:21doesn't fit as well. As the last one did, Tom is
- 1:05:24wonderful, bringing huge energy to the X interests of the new
- 1:05:28doctor, but being deadly serious.
- 1:05:30When the situation requires it, the robot looks.
- 1:05:33Damn good. Yes, we have to ignore the Sarah
- 1:05:35doll and the toy tank, but their seconds of screen time and mykal
- 1:05:39Kilgore plays it. Well, you really feel sorry for
- 1:05:41the robot when it comes to kettlebell confused and begging
- 1:05:44for its help help from its creator.
- 1:05:46Keep James Lark, although robot is an anomaly it's a solid code
- 1:05:51to the. Let's Dick's era free from the
- 1:05:53baggage. Started to weigh them down
- 1:05:55completely sold by the energy Baker, brings and his instant
- 1:05:59rapport with Slade and Martyr and indeed, Courtney.
- 1:06:01Glad it didn't carry on like this though.
- 1:06:03John Arnold robot is a neat introduction for the new
- 1:06:06doctrine. A climate, the audience used to
- 1:06:08the trappings of the part. We use the threat of Think Tank,
- 1:06:11the people who consider themselves smarter than everyone
- 1:06:14else. And so should be running
- 1:06:15everything remains relevant idea to this day.
- 1:06:18And the Carol says, robot is a good start Bitcoin only, but K1
- 1:06:24is good and Sarah has lots of agency subtle villains and
- 1:06:27Action, Man action. Charlie Barnes a poetry
- 1:06:30adventure with a difficult with a different doctor was a smart
- 1:06:33move, reassuring viewers that while he looks different.
- 1:06:36He still the same man. Paul Smythe says, such a
- 1:06:39confident debut for the new doctor that the robot looks
- 1:06:42cool. Winter's is a great villain,
- 1:06:43Sarah's doll substitute and the model tank are impressing.
- 1:06:46But this is great. David Gillespie Pratt.
- 1:06:49The twin dilemma gets dragged for being the cheapest story
- 1:06:51recorded at the end of production year with a tide a
- 1:06:54clearly tied and spent production team.
- 1:06:55The same criticism could be level.
- 1:06:57That robot is a tard wobbly classic production and could
- 1:07:01have killed the new doctor off before he started.
- 1:07:03I mean, David. You've got entire sequences of
- 1:07:09an army fully armed like there's a shit ton of location.
- 1:07:14What? I don't think you could say.
- 1:07:16This is a tired production. There's a ton of energy there.
- 1:07:20Certainly a lot of money on the screen as well.
- 1:07:23But it's all those bullets flying around and nobody gets
- 1:07:25shot. No, that's Yeah, they just
- 1:07:29remember the 18. No died in the 80.
- 1:07:33Oh boy. But there was a great
- 1:07:41explosions. Oh yeah, love and explosion.
- 1:07:43Yeah. Oscar Groucho says King Kong
- 1:07:47sketched on the back of a sick packet by warning. and it's
- 1:07:53brilliant, bold Brave, according to the previous era by
- 1:07:56contrasting, our new lead in a familiar Milo, He was a good
- 1:08:17enough for a generation story to introduce us to the teeth, and
- 1:08:20kills, the King Kong stuff isn't too cliche and the general
- 1:08:23premises, okay? But it's clear that units time
- 1:08:26has been and gone. Room and the potential.
- 1:08:31Potential American mad man. Big Orange.
- 1:08:33Michael says, Tom Baker sees the role from his first scenes and
- 1:08:38never lets up Baker is the big selling point of this story
- 1:08:41which runs out of steam by halfway through episode 4, but I
- 1:08:44was having so much fun I didn't really worry.
- 1:08:46Target novel was great to keep it.
- 1:08:50And include you love the way that Tom Baker's head comes out
- 1:08:53the O and the target novel. Yes, very funny.
- 1:08:57Yeah. Finally, Michael storm a solid.
- 1:09:01If unremarkable story to launch the full stops, her wisely
- 1:09:04unclear and highlights the Unison to the doctor, by putting
- 1:09:06him in the familiar settings, that giving him an Avengers plot
- 1:09:09to deal. With is old, we are consisted
- 1:09:11based on an episode that they wrote that he wrote with Mac,
- 1:09:14Hulk called the Mauritius. I think the robot looks great
- 1:09:18and so it moves and starts cranking all the time.
- 1:09:20Yeah, the action figure version can't stand up either, Winters
- 1:09:25is a great cold calculating villain.
- 1:09:27Sarah is used very well in this story, Harry, not so much
- 1:09:31because it considering, it is his story.
- 1:09:33Unfortunately, the whole giant robot element feels very much,
- 1:09:36like it is tacked on to fill up the runtime, keep having.
- 1:09:40You could always count on Michael storm to miss the point,
- 1:09:42can't you? I mean that robot is so
- 1:09:44fabulous. Why would you take that out?
- 1:09:48Yeah. I mean it stands on whole loads
- 1:09:50of units soldiers because I kicked the side of building.
- 1:09:54Oh, Michael. Come watch Nightmare and silver
- 1:09:56again. As a punishment and Joe, you,
- 1:10:01you were quite vocal. And you want to carry on Joe,
- 1:10:05with the knee. And usually, yes.
- 1:10:07Oh, I love robot. I just love it.
- 1:10:10I think it's the most entertaining story of the Year,
- 1:10:14by a country mile. I think there's there's good
- 1:10:16stuff elsewhere, but this is really fun.
- 1:10:19And when I said earlier about Elisabeth sladen, being vital,
- 1:10:23which I mean, she is Goldust in this if she was something there,
- 1:10:27that would just be, you know, I mean, it is a four middle
- 1:10:31costume, but when he starts moving is fucking ridiculous.
- 1:10:34He has to get help down the stairs by forgot.
- 1:10:36Come along now. Oh, dear down the stairs.
- 1:10:39He's supposed to be this scary robot but she is the bit in the
- 1:10:42village. Yeah, but the village hall is
- 1:10:47coming off the stage at least. It's like the Canine Cuts isn't
- 1:10:54it? Know, I just I know it's like
- 1:10:57just couldn't go to say well, he's down but she personifies
- 1:11:02that robot. Like she literally makes that
- 1:11:04robot into a person by treating it the way she does.
- 1:11:07The people she says that was a really cruel thing to do, you
- 1:11:11know, are you okay? And let's say the right, you
- 1:11:14don't have to be this good, she doesn't have to give this wonky
- 1:11:16material this level of sentiment and commitment.
- 1:11:20She is so great. It's a shame at the end.
- 1:11:22She's on that CSO rooftop guy down.
- 1:11:27Oh, she is fight right at that point.
- 1:11:29She's wonderful good and I love as well.
- 1:11:32Everyone that said about she's sort of her characterization,
- 1:11:36goes in the wrong direction. The first half of this story,
- 1:11:38she's investigating. She's the one that is literally
- 1:11:41driving the story. I think she's wonderful, good in
- 1:11:44this. All, I know she does look like a
- 1:11:46young Ms. Marple, they put her in a very sort of flower dress
- 1:11:50and I think Sarah Sutton and Janet building comment on it on
- 1:11:53the the more costumes in in one story.
- 1:12:01Then she get them, they get in, you know, two or three seasons
- 1:12:04somehow even better than Elizabeth slate and know is our
- 1:12:08Miss Winters. Um, and her fabulous, scientific
- 1:12:13New Order. I mean, it's it's a Nazi
- 1:12:17dictator as Lucy, said, sorry? As Joe said, in dietary Barlow
- 1:12:21glasses, Robot. We shall seek out and Destroy
- 1:12:29seek out. And Destroy, and we don't have
- 1:12:38enough insane. Women in Doctor, Who do we?
- 1:12:41She is great. So, I think, yeah, you got a
- 1:12:44great companion here, you got a great villain here.
- 1:12:46And when they go to get against each other about bit in episode
- 1:12:492, where she goes, what this woman is a and enemy of the
- 1:12:54United Kingdom kill her. That's a really tense moment.
- 1:12:57But I think as well, terrorists, just make sure that this this
- 1:13:02story is packed full of where there are so many memorable
- 1:13:06lines in this. And because the sort like sitcom
- 1:13:10dialogue, the pace of this thing never lets up, and there's so
- 1:13:13much back and forth him And it's full of quirky and fun
- 1:13:17characters. I just love watching our door
- 1:13:19keter. Well it is the best Nutty
- 1:13:21Professor we ever had in Doctor Who, but the doctors funny in
- 1:13:25this as well, the Brigadier gets loads of great lines.
- 1:13:27Harry does isn't there as much as you think?
- 1:13:30He is actually, is there at the start and is there at the end
- 1:13:32but what he does get to do is great.
- 1:13:34I would like to have seen a bit more of his John Steed in Think
- 1:13:38Tank, I think, because we don't really have the time.
- 1:13:40We don't do that. So this is terrific fun.
- 1:13:44Robot it is a hangover. It is old because having Tom's
- 1:13:50energy in there. With a unit story means it's a
- 1:13:53total outlier to the era was just gone.
- 1:13:56But as a one-off it's quirky and it's Pacey and I just love
- 1:14:02watching it. Yeah, please.
- 1:14:03When second vote for robot is my, is my memory deceiving me,
- 1:14:08what they thought meant to book in the season.
- 1:14:10With units, stories wasn't Terror of the zygons originally
- 1:14:12supposed to be the end for 12. So I yeah, it maybe feels more
- 1:14:17like an outlier because he only intros, which is so little
- 1:14:22because terrorism is a throwback to like season 7 unit where it's
- 1:14:26very serious and graphic and a little bit Clinic called it's
- 1:14:32fun though and that giant robot oh that's CSR.
- 1:14:35I mean it's Pony in it. It's wonderful whole last
- 1:14:39episode I mean the Brigade is such a stupid car in a Oh I
- 1:14:43think I want to do. Oh whoops, I've made him.
- 1:14:47Absolutely massive. I mean anyway except the Brigade
- 1:14:50is character has been assassinated was right.
- 1:14:52Hey no, no, no, no. They were supposed to be this
- 1:14:56integrated Grant gun, he didn't know it was gonna turn it into a
- 1:15:01bloody massive robot and give you unit private that got
- 1:15:11squashed by the robots mother. I'm so sorry.
- 1:15:14I didn't read the instructions on the disintegrated garden and
- 1:15:17your son was crushed by the giant robots Force, but it was a
- 1:15:22mistake. Anyone could have made, love
- 1:15:24Alastair, Gordon Leftwich Family.
- 1:15:55Unfortunately, an evil scheming Mastermind called the master for
- 1:16:02an enormous. White buttery guard on a string
- 1:16:05out of a crystal and your private son.
- 1:16:08Just happened to be in the way. Regards Alistair Gordon lipid
- 1:16:12Stewart. I mean, I could write the
- 1:16:14letters. Sorry since you've been gone,
- 1:16:16we've just been right? And let us home to all the unit
- 1:16:18Personnel that have been murdered on the Brigadier.
- 1:16:20Yes, I think there is an annual. It was one of the annuals that
- 1:16:24was covered by the track one crew.
- 1:16:26Where the, in the back of it, there's a section of letters
- 1:16:30written by the Brigadier to Geneva trying to explain the
- 1:16:34yes. Trying to explain the funding
- 1:16:36the bizarre funding requests that go It's a little bit.
- 1:16:41There's lots of things by the bigger days as well.
- 1:16:49Yes. And so, I think this world comes
- 1:16:59with my son, when he was, however, accidentally
- 1:17:11responsible for growing the giant robot, Let's move on.
- 1:17:18Let's move on. Elliot, would you like to?
- 1:17:23Champion or condemn robots. I would absolutely be honored to
- 1:17:28Champion road. Yeah, so I had, this is, as I
- 1:17:34said towards the start, this is probably my first proper classic
- 1:17:37Doctor Who story? Um, I just, I just think it's
- 1:17:41absolutely magical. I I feel very mixed and this is
- 1:17:45not an I'll give them that. I want to start now, but I feel
- 1:17:47very mixed on on a lot of the third doctors tenure and the
- 1:17:52stuff with unit, but it's really nice to get them to get them
- 1:17:56back here and for it to be injected with a, with a fresh
- 1:17:59shot of energy from Tom. And I mean is just hilarious.
- 1:18:06He's I think it was it was you over the day?
- 1:18:08Saying it's kind of feels just like a sitcom there are jokes
- 1:18:12about and I think all of them here but probably all of my
- 1:18:16favorite lines from this entire season.
- 1:18:18Probably will come from this story.
- 1:18:19Have you got some written down? Come on.
- 1:18:21Oh I've got I've got 100 personal favorite one that
- 1:18:24always sticks out to me though, is I don't like impregnable.
- 1:18:26Sounds a little bit like on syncable.
- 1:18:28What's wrong with Unsinkable nothing?
- 1:18:30As the iceberg said to the Titanic.
- 1:18:31Look look, it's it's absolutely fantastic.
- 1:18:37But in the Up, it comes out and he goes, he's wearing that
- 1:18:42ridiculous spike in costume unit is supposed to be a scientific,
- 1:18:46a miniature organization. Do you think I might attract
- 1:18:50attention? It's just possible.
- 1:18:51Yes, just possible. Yes.
- 1:18:53And that's the reason why he comes out and they both just go
- 1:18:57Yeah, that's the second best is the second best bigger Day gift
- 1:19:02isn't a because we got lifts his favorite one.
- 1:19:05Oh yeah. Just I it's I think it's a story
- 1:19:14that maybe if I was less willing to have Camp fun that you could
- 1:19:18pick full of holes. But I I just enjoy it so much.
- 1:19:21The design of the K1 robot, I do think he's genuinely very
- 1:19:25impressive. And he is Tron, D and wobbling
- 1:19:29and it's, it definitely looks like it can't stand up on it.
- 1:19:34So and as the action figure proved, but it still is an
- 1:19:39incredible piece of design. I think I love the POV shots
- 1:19:42from the K1 robot. I think that is a real good bit
- 1:19:44of the effects work. I think that looks absolutely
- 1:19:48fantastic and write music as well.
- 1:19:50Yes, and it's really, it was very shots.
- 1:19:56I think um, And I love Harry Sullivan just as a character in
- 1:20:02general. Ian Master is so full of charm
- 1:20:04and he could have liked that. He's in the beginning then sort
- 1:20:07of at the end but I'd love Like yeah, I love his introduction.
- 1:20:11It's brilliant to the ABC's, Sarah, Jane, doing investigative
- 1:20:17journalism in this and then Say, kind of maybe loses the right of
- 1:20:21itself by having to make a favor.
- 1:20:22But I think the first couple episodes of this are really
- 1:20:25strong because of Sarah, Jane. And I also, as well would like
- 1:20:29to. Well, I might have some
- 1:20:30criticisms of where they take Sarah's character, but none of
- 1:20:32its ever criticism of Elizabeth slayton's acting ability, she's
- 1:20:35always incredible. Um, And as well Joe without any,
- 1:20:43I did all. So make a big note that just
- 1:20:45says the Brigadier is a swinger because that did stick out to be
- 1:20:49um no I yeah I just think it's it's great fun and I want to
- 1:20:57keep it. A couple of Elliot you know
- 1:20:59police boxes don't go career in about all over the place.
- 1:21:04There's there's all those it's all those remarks about women's
- 1:21:07lib in the middle of it. Which will start to get a bit.
- 1:21:10So start to get a bit strange. But yeah.
- 1:21:13It's I love the weather and say return to Harry and just so
- 1:21:23great today. He's He and Martha has the most
- 1:21:27beautiful eyes. I have to, you know, on a purely
- 1:21:29technical level, he's got gorgeous eyes, I could look at
- 1:21:32those eyes all day. What beautiful man.
- 1:21:34He was like, regardless of what we might have said.
- 1:21:37It's a great team, isn't it? Yes, that's a brilliant
- 1:21:41artistic. I I think it's a shame that they
- 1:21:44kind of yeah, decide that they don't need a martyr because he
- 1:21:46does really, I think contribute to the team and I love having
- 1:21:50him around. I think this this story, though,
- 1:21:52I mean, mean, you Joe with an E have spoken previously about how
- 1:21:56doctors are ashamed of their show being fun?
- 1:21:59Yeah, this is not the story. You'd want to show to someone to
- 1:22:01be like, oh, this is Doctor Who, but sometimes you just, you
- 1:22:05gotta have fun, there's nothing wrong with it.
- 1:22:07But when the K1 robot gets the, there's a gun in his arm and
- 1:22:11it's just flailing around that. Can't Point straight.
- 1:22:14You never go to shoot anybody with it.
- 1:22:15But that's all part of the charm.
- 1:22:17I think it looks happy but it's not something she has to do
- 1:22:24that, sort of like, you know, And I think this one great
- 1:22:32moment though where he smacks Tom Baker on the, hey, on the,
- 1:22:35you know, release when he swings around.
- 1:22:37Hey, this series does not ever been knocked out, so much in one
- 1:22:45series and bashed about every single.
- 1:22:49Story. That's too big for your boats,
- 1:22:53Tom. All right, don't you know if you
- 1:22:56know actually can do it, it's time.
- 1:22:58They could do, you know coach, you just go.
- 1:22:59Hey, and just stop over. He does get knocked about.
- 1:23:02So, why actually can you imagine poach?
- 1:23:05We doing this for Newton Aikido against the robot would be.
- 1:23:09That was a bit embarrassing. Hi, sorry.
- 1:23:12Anyway, please make your point. I just wanted to say that.
- 1:23:18I also think, I think the sea, the CSO descendants.
- 1:23:21A great question of the robot at the end is, is quite quite
- 1:23:24beautiful and maybe Rivals the deflation of the sontara.
- 1:23:27And for me, for sort of affected in this series, I really like
- 1:23:30it. It's really trippy and really
- 1:23:31weird. It's going.
- 1:23:34Oh, definitely keep for me. Yes, that's right.
- 1:23:42That's three keeps Lucy. Would you like to go, thanks.
- 1:23:46yeah, next and I will keep you. For me, Sarah's outfits.
- 1:23:54Are just frankly, bizarre from this point onwards, And I know
- 1:23:59there may be that her Brown trouser suit was not quite so
- 1:24:03interesting and it's nice that she gets changes of clothes but
- 1:24:06the whole kind of cloche hat twin set and Pearls look on a
- 1:24:11young woman in the 1970s, he's really strange.
- 1:24:13It's really 1920s Flappers and it was actually an episode of
- 1:24:21quarrels or something. Yeah, she looks like Hyacinth
- 1:24:25bouquet. I love it.
- 1:24:27What are you talking about? She's I think around Fashion.
- 1:24:31Yeah. She's wearing like you know
- 1:24:34leather jackets and stuff and looking really sort of like you
- 1:24:38know she justifies that doesn't she says that because she's sort
- 1:24:41of getting into the time travel going to different places she
- 1:24:44sort of relaxing a design style. Well anyway whatever Stress that
- 1:24:49she wears there was well, but with it flowers or licorice,
- 1:24:53also, the one that they should wasn't in the park, right?
- 1:24:58You're not looking as well. That's what it is.
- 1:25:01Yeah. Very sort of my grandmother was
- 1:25:04something like that low. So you should never brought us
- 1:25:07up, who was doing the course. He was deciding on the costumes
- 1:25:12at that point and were they male.
- 1:25:13It's Jim Ashton isn't. It is a man.
- 1:25:16Yeah, yeah, I yeah. I like toms, instant impact as
- 1:25:21the doctor and a different doctor, completely different
- 1:25:24person. The East fun, it's tremendous
- 1:25:28fun. The funds slightly makes unit
- 1:25:31less capable not that they're terribly capable at the best of
- 1:25:35times, but it is, it is kind of, you know, it's like oh that
- 1:25:38thing you really enjoyed. Yes, rubbish.
- 1:25:41So if you, if you were invested in the previous seasons and then
- 1:25:46suddenly there's this new clever boy comes into the class and
- 1:25:48just points out that all the things that you enjoyed were a
- 1:25:51bit shit. Really, and you should like this
- 1:25:52new cool stuff. I do love the robot.
- 1:25:55I love the designer of what. I love the way it looks.
- 1:25:57It's very kind of, he's very classic sort of probably the
- 1:26:01robot or the robot in Forbidden Planet and that works.
- 1:26:06Well, particularly the Dome head with the sort of almost like
- 1:26:09stained glass effect and the voice is great.
- 1:26:13I love the doctors dimensionally transcendental pockets.
- 1:26:17That he's, he's a becoming a magician, isn't he?
- 1:26:20In this story? And and the fact that, that
- 1:26:25joke, then pays off later or on, because whenever he's asked,
- 1:26:28he's Pockets, you know what's going to happen.
- 1:26:31Now, he will produce a yoyo and a stuffed bird and a goodness.
- 1:26:36Knows what else. All this stuff will come out.
- 1:26:38So when that joke hits again later on, you ready for it?
- 1:26:41Because you know what's going to happen, just remember what he
- 1:26:45spills all of his pockets. So when when you get to Genesis,
- 1:26:48you've been like you Empty your pockets.
- 1:26:56Okay. Um, so yeah, I like those
- 1:26:59aspects of it. I must admit when I first
- 1:27:01watched it, I thought the tank was meant to be miniature.
- 1:27:03I didn't realize it was supposed to be big because it's so
- 1:27:06obviously my brother's Action Man tank.
- 1:27:09And that was a bit weird. So, yeah, there are things that
- 1:27:13kind of don't don't quite heat for me.
- 1:27:15The other thing is that the think tank people, the think
- 1:27:18tank, people are the people who the Conspiracy theorists think
- 1:27:23are running the world and they really not.
- 1:27:27Because I've heard people saying about these secret, you know,
- 1:27:30these secret scientists that are running this thing.
- 1:27:33No, they're not. And if they were, they'd be just
- 1:27:34as this lot. Yeah, so the King Kong angle is
- 1:27:40fine with a robot on other other things have been done with with
- 1:27:44the robot aspect. Forbidden Planet was the Tempest
- 1:27:48with robots and monsters from lead, so why not do that?
- 1:27:53Harry. I I don't think Harry would have
- 1:27:56worked if he hadn't been played by in Malta.
- 1:27:58Yeah, he's my conclusion because Harry is so strange, he is
- 1:28:04completely out of time. He is supposed to be a and
- 1:28:08Junior admittedly officer in the Navy and a medical practitioner.
- 1:28:15and he, Talks like somebody from a PG Woodhouse novel.
- 1:28:22Which is like one as well and dresses like one as well.
- 1:28:25So he dresses like an elderly member of a yacht club.
- 1:28:29And he talks like whether this is supposed to be a joke at the
- 1:28:31expense of the royal Navy. I have no idea, but I'm
- 1:28:34convinced that if he wasn't Ian Marta, he would just be so
- 1:28:38bloody annoying. You would want to repeatedly
- 1:28:41speaking his oil, punch him in the face or whatever it happened
- 1:28:44to be. So I It's just emulator is just
- 1:28:49Charming. He's just a Charming
- 1:28:50personality. He's warm.
- 1:28:51He's He is self-deprecating in the park when he is called on to
- 1:28:57be properly. Good at his job, he can be
- 1:29:00properly good at that job and he has this rapport with with
- 1:29:05Thomas. Sarah Elizabeth, but he just, I
- 1:29:10think That was what struck me because I heard about I hadn't
- 1:29:14watched any of these episodes before my grand, rewatched
- 1:29:17during the pandemic. And, but I'd heard about Harry
- 1:29:19and Sarah and the doctor and okay.
- 1:29:22And then he came on talking this.
- 1:29:24Oh, what does what What are they doing with it?
- 1:29:28I just don't, it's never explained.
- 1:29:30I know it's mentioned in the novelization which presumably
- 1:29:33was Terrence or whoever covering it with a lot.
- 1:29:35So oh, he's a bit old-fashioned but it's never explained why
- 1:29:39somebody who has risen to a certain rank in the Royal Navy
- 1:29:44and As a medical practitioner and explosive expert talks, like
- 1:29:50someone from PG would house novel is just bizarre decision.
- 1:29:54And I think if it wasn't, if he wasn't played by such an
- 1:29:57attractive, personally, and physically, attractive man, who
- 1:30:00had such a rapport with his colleagues, it would be
- 1:30:02disaster. So, I'm glad it's still a really
- 1:30:05peculiar decision to make and I still don't understand why, you
- 1:30:10know, he fits all of them wouldn't he was just terrible.
- 1:30:20It was Sarah when, you know, Barry and then The Beloved
- 1:30:31Jeremy, that's who he was thinking on, you know, I'll take
- 1:30:33Harry and to make him. Oh, I mean, they're, they're
- 1:30:37not, you're right, they're not that far apart, in terms of how
- 1:30:40they've written, but in how they're played.
- 1:30:43Yeah, Lucifer. Yeah.
- 1:30:44It's just, and it's like, you know, I think most people like
- 1:30:46love Harry, you know, and everybody hates Jeremy was just
- 1:30:49shows that, you know, oh, that's just shows how important and act
- 1:30:54to is to make a part can be sort of, you know, maybe they could
- 1:30:58have seen him would have been different.
- 1:31:00Because, the guy who plays Jeremy things, like, fucking hot
- 1:31:03as hell. Oh, he just sounds annoying.
- 1:31:05But no. Anyway, I would like to hear the
- 1:31:08villains are properly nasty and villainous so you can Boo and he
- 1:31:11said them, the robot is good. They have the, the sort of moral
- 1:31:16conundrum of being a robot filters from massive morphine,
- 1:31:20chapek's rossum's Universal robots.
- 1:31:23Which also has a female character who asks a robot, how
- 1:31:26it feels about something in it. And yeah, it's it's it's fun.
- 1:31:32It's just fun. And I obviously, I watched it
- 1:31:35without any kind of fan baggage to it and I found it amusing and
- 1:31:38enjoyable but I couldn't figure out at all and I do think it's
- 1:31:44the beginning. It's more of a beginning to
- 1:31:46making unit, a slightly ridiculous.
- 1:31:51Encumbrance rather than an integral part of the story, but
- 1:31:55the stories were going to move on.
- 1:31:57In any case it wouldn't have worked otherwise.
- 1:31:59So Lucy, I have given me a completely new reading on a
- 1:32:03scene though. Thank you.
- 1:32:04And that bit with the tank. Okay, well, it's also because
- 1:32:09floppy line who is probably of all of our acquaintances online
- 1:32:12has. He's, he's only did a little
- 1:32:15video of floppy lion riding in a tank, which is very like this.
- 1:32:19And it's like, I think married goes, don't you worry, I've got
- 1:32:23something that can do with this. Yeah, that goes.
- 1:32:28I couldn't work. Well, you pay attention to stop
- 1:32:37playing with your toy tags. Come on now.
- 1:32:39Yeah, that was it in some of the sort of chat between the brooder
- 1:32:42and the doctor, the Broody is being positioned in a more Even
- 1:32:47more comedic way than he was at the end of the perch.
- 1:32:49We era, Sarah is patronizing Benton in a not particularly
- 1:32:55nice way and it just yeah. It's kind of clicking on to the
- 1:33:03things that I really enjoyed, and Turning them more towards.
- 1:33:07I mean, Saigon's is kind of back into a bit more serious unit,
- 1:33:12but this is more like panto unit, but I, but I like, there
- 1:33:16are more things I like about it than I disliked about it.
- 1:33:18So yes, keep it. As are.
- 1:33:22Is it going to be five out of five?
- 1:33:24Yes, yes. Come on.
- 1:33:26No. I you know what, I could go
- 1:33:32either way on this because I don't think it's very well
- 1:33:35directed. I think there is a certain bits
- 1:33:38that the actions clunky Yeah. It does feel very much like a
- 1:33:45throwback. It does.
- 1:33:47I don't like the brigadier's characterization.
- 1:33:49He's too much of an idiot and I think I agree with all of you
- 1:33:54about what you said about Harry that if it wasn't heard martyr,
- 1:33:57he would be 30 Worcester in a naval costume and as annoying as
- 1:34:02as anything. What I mean, I don't agree with
- 1:34:06that. I think he's inspired giving him
- 1:34:08allow Jog and otherwise he would just be another Benton.
- 1:34:12So it really makes them stand out when he says things like and
- 1:34:15one of your totem pole and all this or more cases would be, he
- 1:34:20would be another Captain Yates. It's just basically, he's a
- 1:34:23Navy. He's a, he's a sailor rather
- 1:34:25than a soldier which isn't really is really the difference
- 1:34:28between him and but also, I think in masters of far better
- 1:34:32actor, But of course, I'm gonna keep this.
- 1:34:34This is brilliant. This is, this is the most
- 1:34:39child-friendly episode or story of the season.
- 1:34:42I would have no qualms about, you know, sitting down with
- 1:34:46Luke, and watching this or Thomas, who's five?
- 1:34:48And you, oh, I actually points. So fair enough I have never
- 1:34:55noticed this robot has a nose. I've never so that immediately
- 1:35:01makes you think. This is actually a robot, man.
- 1:35:05Not a robot. It's a robot man and that's what
- 1:35:08is so brilliant about the design.
- 1:35:10So you're immediately is anthropomorphized, you've got
- 1:35:14this voice, it's not a dialect voice.
- 1:35:16It's a voice and you get a really good voice actor to do
- 1:35:20this because he Michael killed Gareth, I think is or was part
- 1:35:23of the BBC, Radio drama unit and did a lot of drama Productions.
- 1:35:27So he's really well known for his voice and he's brilliant.
- 1:35:31It's a great story for Sarah. Yes, some of her costume changes
- 1:35:35are Slightly bizarre, but listen really makes you believe but
- 1:35:40Sarah has feelings for this robot and I love as the as you
- 1:35:44go about the the Viewpoint, the point of view shots of the of
- 1:35:47the robot, when you see it at the beginning, you're curious to
- 1:35:51know what's going on. When you see that part one,
- 1:35:53Cliffhanger, you Realize, it's, it's signposted well enough for
- 1:35:56the, for the kids, and the adults to go.
- 1:35:58It's the robot that's been killing these people.
- 1:36:01And it's going to kill Sarah and basic Cliff Hanger.
- 1:36:07Yeah, this is great fun. I think Tom, it's not his best
- 1:36:10performance. He's clearly finding his feet,
- 1:36:11but there are Pointers of to where he's going to go with the
- 1:36:15character. And he, you know, there's that
- 1:36:18not listening and staring into space, to sort of abstract
- 1:36:22alienists, which is there to differentiate him from Pertwee.
- 1:36:25I love the line. When he says, wait, where the
- 1:36:29Brigade is says, well the, you know, the only country that
- 1:36:31could be trusted was Great Britain.
- 1:36:32And Tom goes, oh yes, naturally because the rest were all
- 1:36:35foreigners. I don't want to probably said
- 1:36:38Because he works for the United Nations.
- 1:36:40I know. I know not.
- 1:36:42So sorry to bossy like that. Sorry.
- 1:36:46No, no we're all doing it. No, no I know I know what you
- 1:36:52mean as a bit of Comedy. It's quite fun but it really
- 1:36:56yeah undermines the Brigade is character and just make some the
- 1:37:00colonel blimp but also it's got that my favorite line of dog,
- 1:37:05too, which I have quoted so many times to children and so like
- 1:37:10there is no point in being grown up.
- 1:37:12If you can't be childish, sometimes Thank you, and it's
- 1:37:16just, yeah, it's yeah, we got to keep it, just even if it's just
- 1:37:19for that. But last thing is just glorious,
- 1:37:22isn't it? I mean that's so good.
- 1:37:24The last seen as a mission statement of we're gonna go and
- 1:37:27have some fun, what you? We get the orc in space.
- 1:37:29Next one last point and just say that that robot has such Flair
- 1:37:37because he's got the best shoulder pads until Kate.
- 1:37:40O'Mara and Bonnie Langford, come along into Doctor Who I mean,
- 1:37:43they're just amazing. All right?
- 1:37:45If the eighties come early, the robot's movement may be shipped,
- 1:37:49but then think tank is shit too, aren't they?
- 1:37:51They think they're going to rule the world and they haven't got
- 1:37:53enough supplies. But the non surprise twist.
- 1:37:57We are all to one man. Who could it be the only other
- 1:38:00guy? Because it doesn't matter
- 1:38:04sometimes if you're ahead of the acid.
- 1:38:07Dramatic device. Being ahead of the The cast
- 1:38:11means that you're kind of know something Terrible's gonna
- 1:38:14happen and you don't know. Yeah, you're walking right to it
- 1:38:16but on the other hand if you're saying nine and you're suddenly
- 1:38:19hated the car that's really brilliant because you figured
- 1:38:22it. Yes.
- 1:38:22You know what's going on you? I'm still nine so true.
- 1:38:27Yeah. The same reaction like is it?
- 1:38:30There's no point in being grown up.
- 1:38:31If you can't be childish, sometimes there we go.
- 1:38:34So that's a straight win five? Yeah.
- 1:38:37So who's going to do our third story?
- 1:38:43I'm happy to go next. Okay?
- 1:38:45No. Oh, okay, no.
- 1:38:48Can we talk about the Ark in space, please?
- 1:38:54And I come to praise the Ark in space.
- 1:38:57I think it's superb, but I've chosen three sort of reasons
- 1:39:01that we don't normally hear about.
- 1:39:03And what number one reason is the bubble wrap, which I think
- 1:39:08is ingenious and I, obviously bubble wrap wasn't being used in
- 1:39:13Amazon Parcels at the time, the designers found this unusual new
- 1:39:18products. And, oh my God, we can actually
- 1:39:20do the physical transformation of our man into an insect using.
- 1:39:25This thing, sprayed, green know and I think the bubble wrap is
- 1:39:28literally That doctor who write. If you can watch classic Doctor
- 1:39:34Who and see that as the transformation of a managed to
- 1:39:37an insect and not, oh God, that's just bubble wrap.
- 1:39:40Yeah, you can watch they go. Joe is literally Oh, no.
- 1:39:46I was gonna paint it green, but I thought.
- 1:39:51No, well time though. I just, I just think, if you can
- 1:39:54get behind that, you can basically watch all of classic
- 1:39:57Who dodgy effects and all, and you can just go with what the
- 1:40:00story is trying to present to you.
- 1:40:01If you can't, maybe don't watch classic Doctor Who because
- 1:40:05you're gonna spend most of your time on podcast.
- 1:40:07Wow, you know it looks a bit cheap it looked like a toy tank.
- 1:40:11Yeah. So I think the pop rocks
- 1:40:12brilliant. And I think the transformation
- 1:40:14the physical, right? The big, he's in the corridor
- 1:40:17and half of him's transformed. It's absolutely.
- 1:40:32The second reason I love the Arkansas space again is a little
- 1:40:36bit later. Now, I know she wasn't happy
- 1:40:39with this script and how she was portrayed.
- 1:40:43Take her out of this story for a second.
- 1:40:45Yeah. And then you've got a lot of
- 1:40:47very serious people. Not behaving in a particularly
- 1:40:52scared way. Going for this.
- 1:40:54So there's no, there's no tension to this at all.
- 1:40:57It's her, she brings it. Oh, when she's on the couch and
- 1:41:00she's doing that Breezy Panic, you're really there with her
- 1:41:03when she comes out of the thing. And she goes, what's this?
- 1:41:06What's happening? And she's panicked yet, you're
- 1:41:08there with her, when she's going through that ventilation shaft
- 1:41:12at the end of the story. And the insects trying to get
- 1:41:15her, she's terrified. I think I think her the fact
- 1:41:19that she is overly emotional and put into she is a victim in this
- 1:41:24a companion are but I think the fact that she is there, that's
- 1:41:28why the Arkham space has like, you know, a fast heartbeat and a
- 1:41:33feeling of claustrophobia because if it's just viral
- 1:41:35walking around getting it. Oh yeah.
- 1:41:37Oh yeah, there's nothing. There's there's no tension
- 1:41:41there. Harry's not particularly
- 1:41:43responding to this situation with anything but one-liners.
- 1:41:47And the doctor is being witty and clever and, and charismatic
- 1:41:52Sarah's afraid. And that's why we're afraid in
- 1:41:55this story. I think Elizabethton is
- 1:41:57brilliant. And can I just a quick moment
- 1:42:00for my mom's all-time least favorite Doctor, Who moment that
- 1:42:04she used to quote, to me all the time when I would bring up how
- 1:42:08much I love, Sarah Jane, she just go.
- 1:42:10Oh, come again, you're a brute. Because she was awful.
- 1:42:17I love it. You've done marvelously, Sarah.
- 1:42:36I'm very proud of you. I really am very proud of you.
- 1:42:42Come to you brute. Don't be ungrateful.
- 1:42:46I was on the encouraging. You come.
- 1:42:48And my last reason is Ken some more.
- 1:42:51We're going to see an awful lot of possession in the next three
- 1:42:55years is probably homes favorite thing.
- 1:42:58I think this is the most convincing and painful
- 1:43:00transformation that you ever seen in the history of that bit
- 1:43:04where it should be observed. He's wrestling with his arm,
- 1:43:07which is called covered in bubble wrap.
- 1:43:09It's really scary and and the way he says the Lions when he
- 1:43:16saw saying get Are your people to the?
- 1:43:19It's like something is literally trying to come up through him
- 1:43:23and and vomit out of his mouth, it's really disturbing its
- 1:43:27psychological and its physical. And you need a good actor to
- 1:43:31pull off that shit and deliver that pain to the audience and
- 1:43:34he's more than up to the task. So, yeah, I think in terms of
- 1:43:38special effects, they're a bit Pony, but I think they're doing
- 1:43:43what they can this later and absolutely sell in the danger of
- 1:43:47this story and Ken some more convincing that a man is turning
- 1:43:51into a bunk. I guess is brilliant.
- 1:43:55There's millions of other reasons that you guys will go
- 1:43:57into the sets, the script Tom, all of that.
- 1:44:00But I just think on every level The Ark in space it is our bold
- 1:44:04new duration for Doctor Who know Wonder 13 million people turned
- 1:44:08up and watched episode 2. No wonder, yes please.
- 1:44:11Let's put it for Now, Daniel you're muted?
- 1:44:14Yeah. Elliot.
- 1:44:16I was just saying, should we should go to the comments?
- 1:44:18Yeah, absolutely told me to start.
- 1:44:20Yeah, for me. Oh, so the first one is from
- 1:44:25Darren lit. Roundels who says top tier is
- 1:44:29one of Tom's best performance is a world crafted involving story
- 1:44:32but striking set design, all done, Tom Nails, it from the
- 1:44:37get-go. Bubble wrap Heaven.
- 1:44:38Lovely direction from Rodney Bennett top tier, Robert Holmes,
- 1:44:42nice to see a strong female and the guest cast a rare
- 1:44:45occurrence, in the hinge clef era, the wearing are a great
- 1:44:47concept and look great until they move.
- 1:44:51Gareth Bale these says it's a real story full of atmosphere
- 1:44:55and still holds up today. Much better than the alien
- 1:44:58French eyes. All smile.
- 1:45:01I feel this is overrated. It's a bit boring in places the
- 1:45:05we're in failed to convince and apart from Tom's indomitable
- 1:45:08speech, this feels a bit flat. David Gillespie Pratt says a
- 1:45:14blast of fresh air doctor who gets a huge Boost from a new
- 1:45:17producer and it's clear. We're off out into a new
- 1:45:20universe of terrorists. The wiring might wobble but who
- 1:45:22cares as the whole production is character of such conviction?
- 1:45:25Bonus virus smile at the end. The Anthony Carroll one of the
- 1:45:30best First episodes ever. Brilliant sets, and body horror.
- 1:45:34I even forget forgive bubble wrap and they still have just
- 1:45:38gonna say, Onions. They still have unions.
- 1:45:41Sorry. Anthony they may still have
- 1:45:43onions as well, who knows? He's you can store them for
- 1:45:49years. I mean, you've got all Botanical
- 1:45:52life is there? So it's probably definitely
- 1:45:54definitely onions. Yes, although the chomping down
- 1:45:57on those it might stop the breeding but that's, you know,
- 1:45:59that's a lot if they're all true.
- 1:46:02Yeah, but Oscar Groucho, says Arthur C Clarke on a budget
- 1:46:14surprisingly nihilistic, but utterly gripping.
- 1:46:17Peter old, it's a second story that thoroughly establishes.
- 1:46:20Baked in the same way, the Daleks, the mutants stroke, the
- 1:46:23Dead Planet does for Hartnell, one of the top two contenders
- 1:46:26for winning. Big Orange.
- 1:46:29Michael says, there's a reason. This story was the first
- 1:46:32released on any new commercial media.
- 1:46:34It's confident scary and supremely well done.
- 1:46:36A go-to as the best of Doctor, Who keep it, keep it, keep it,
- 1:46:40Michael storm, the Tom Baker era, properly begins and the
- 1:46:44shift in tone and style is enormous.
- 1:46:46Part one has Echoes of the heart malaria and Terry Nation
- 1:46:49openings but it is ramped up. The resolution is well thought
- 1:46:53out probably because homes is homogeneous sorry.
- 1:46:57The course the greater mass experiment and oh that homo
- 1:47:00sapiens Beach. Keep Paul Quinn Arc is easily
- 1:47:05the best of the season one of homes, greatest piece of writing
- 1:47:07and worldbuilding, despite the filling for lucaris Mad thing
- 1:47:11about giant puffballs. You suspend your disbelief at
- 1:47:14the bubble wrap because this is an absolute conviction in the
- 1:47:17script. And the performance is extra
- 1:47:19marks for significant female character in this phallic
- 1:47:22Century period of the show. Brilliant design and Direction
- 1:47:25and Castro. Aliens maybe all-time classic,
- 1:47:29definitely An Arnold starts well with a gorgeously Eerie first
- 1:47:34episode that crashes with the homo sapiens Beach.
- 1:47:37It's a perk we moment of charm that Tom tries to act with the
- 1:47:40capital A and therefore feels horribly staging.
- 1:47:43What's the point of saving a human race when they're just
- 1:47:46scientific authoritarians? James Lark says a Triumph of
- 1:47:50design Direction and determination of the new
- 1:47:53production team to take everything seriously.
- 1:47:55I suspect in season 11, it would have felt like a budget friendly
- 1:47:59filler rather than a classic as which is rightly regarded.
- 1:48:02And I love Tom's, cardigan only look fourth doctor as an
- 1:48:06overgrown student, a conception, we lose within a year, but it
- 1:48:09suits his interpretation. So, well, doesn't he look young.
- 1:48:12Jason Thompson Arc is the story that began my fandom so if
- 1:48:16you've been this one, you've been me.
- 1:48:18Okay. Jason it's rightly 70s with its
- 1:48:21gleaming white rooms consoles and uniforms with flares, but I
- 1:48:24love everything about it. Was the BBC really up to having
- 1:48:27swarms of giant insects in 1974, not really, but kudos for
- 1:48:32trying, the weren't a great design and so what if the love I
- 1:48:37made out of bubble wrap, they look great.
- 1:48:39And Noah's Transformations is very effective, Thomas already
- 1:48:42here. Making it very much his own.
- 1:48:44It's already the doctor here so sorry making it very much is
- 1:48:47own. Keep keep Paul kresses has such
- 1:48:51a sudden change in tone for the program and there's no doubt
- 1:48:54we're in different territory now that we're in any of their
- 1:48:57stages, may not be the most convincing aliens, but it's all
- 1:49:00played with total conviction. It also has a special place for
- 1:49:02being one of these earliest VHS releases, Luke Sims Jenkins the
- 1:49:07Second Story I ever saw. So, I'll always love it.
- 1:49:10It's like alien before alien and it's not boring.
- 1:49:13Unlike alien creeped me out of the kid, a classic.
- 1:49:16I get really being into your classic doctor, but alien, well,
- 1:49:20one of the great is movies, all time is catching some Strays in
- 1:49:22in these comments All not have this.
- 1:49:25Tom Baker with disagree with you.
- 1:49:26You never heard the famous story about Tom but this no Lal Awards
- 1:49:30says about how she and Tom went to see a alien at the cinema
- 1:49:35with Graham and halfway through Tom shouts, why don't they just
- 1:49:39go down to the whole, the alien to death?
- 1:49:44Well, he wouldn't he, oh, good because he's not the lead in
- 1:49:47that. And that film want to be rude,
- 1:49:49but I don't disagree with him. Actually.
- 1:49:51Alien is so boring. No, it's not.
- 1:49:54Well, let me let me rephrase that.
- 1:49:56I think it's absolutely brilliant and a masterpiece of
- 1:50:01tension and one, you've watched it once and then you watch it
- 1:50:04again and you can pick up all the little Tails.
- 1:50:07The Ian Holm, very subtly drops that he's not on the same side
- 1:50:11as the rest of the crew before the rest of it explodes.
- 1:50:14And also I think he's in League with the cat because I think the
- 1:50:17cat leads them to the alien but yeah.
- 1:50:19No, I love you know. I've never seen any I think
- 1:50:23alien and he exists in two completely different
- 1:50:28universities though. Television and Cinema.
- 1:50:30Don't for me. Oh inside.
- 1:50:32But I actually agree with you by just, haven't been around for
- 1:50:38five minutes. I wanted to come back in the
- 1:50:40stir, the pot a little bit, I was good.
- 1:50:42So I thought I was meant to the generous and have no attention
- 1:50:44span. All these people saying alien is
- 1:50:46boring. She's Not for them.
- 1:50:48It's not for them. That's fine.
- 1:50:49You oh gosh yes. Mad Paddington says it just
- 1:50:56immense our new team as a capable Trio and they play so
- 1:50:59well together. I know I'm not saying anything
- 1:51:01new here, but this is one of my go-to stories if I can't decide.
- 1:51:04As a fan who came aboard in 05, maybe there's something in the
- 1:51:07fact that RTD and Moffat have both stated.
- 1:51:09It is a favorite too. Keep in Carter, the Whiplash
- 1:51:12from the previous story is shocking.
- 1:51:14This ain't for kids anymore. A great story, was some gruesome
- 1:51:17ideas. Noah is so well played and you
- 1:51:20can see why it'd be too strong in places as a statement of
- 1:51:24intent for the new production team, this is perfect.
- 1:51:26Keep Glenn Fitzgerald says, I think the Ark in space had such
- 1:51:30great potential but came across as a bit stiff or stuffy, just
- 1:51:33bite. The bubble wrap though, it's a
- 1:51:35nice little story with some noticeable Inspirations from
- 1:51:38other sci-fi of the era. I love the Tardis crew and the
- 1:51:41story, and there's certainly a warmth there.
- 1:51:43So it's all very lovely, Matt. Floyd, a Triumph of ideas and
- 1:51:46storytelling over budget. Conceptually creepy, anyone who
- 1:51:49mentions bubble, wrap is a regressive and only qualified to
- 1:51:52work on sailors. Of.
- 1:51:58Design imagination over budget. I would say, yeah, if it always
- 1:52:04was. Hmm, and says, I want to like
- 1:52:09this one but I don't find it. That great.
- 1:52:10Oh, wait and Kieran Evans. The first time, who does space
- 1:52:15horror? Never has bubble.
- 1:52:16Wrap been so this horrifying before and since and James
- 1:52:21hadwin Bennett says, yes, it gives the regulars a lot to do,
- 1:52:24but the ark itself is one of the most bafflingly stupid
- 1:52:26constructions and the tropes of appealing to humanity still in a
- 1:52:30possessed brain, a rapid cellular, reconfiguration drag
- 1:52:33things down to a cliche and as for the scene of the, we're on
- 1:52:37the outside of the Ark, just very, very badly thought out.
- 1:52:40As it suggests, they move by far power when in space Russell T
- 1:52:44Davis and the cost of saving sets to reuse make 0 logical
- 1:52:53sense and it's utterly unreal in the bugger, how frequently don't
- 1:52:56understand what James. Had been his talking about but
- 1:52:59the tropes of appealing to humanity still in the possessed.
- 1:53:02Brain of Rapha cellular reconfigure.
- 1:53:04I mean James just watching enjoy the thing.
- 1:53:06I think that's what we would nicely refer to as words out
- 1:53:10loud. Yes, yes, we're right in the
- 1:53:13scripts. I'm Elliot would you like to go
- 1:53:17next? Oh sure, thank you.
- 1:53:20It was very polite. Wasn't it?
- 1:53:23Just like, oh, maybe, let's little old me going next.
- 1:53:29I think that, yeah, this is this is a story that I was.
- 1:53:36I was very unsure of going back into into rewatching it because
- 1:53:39I I had seen it once when I first did the watch through and
- 1:53:46I remember liking it but then it's one of those things.
- 1:53:49It's kind of got stuck in my crawls.
- 1:53:50This is the, this is one of the standouts of Doctor Who ever.
- 1:53:53You know, I've got a house speaker with it and he always
- 1:53:56says here, it's the best one they've ever done.
- 1:53:57And I think sometimes, When things have that reputation,
- 1:54:02which a couple of stories do in this season, it can be a bit
- 1:54:05like, oh, is this actually is good, as everybody says it is.
- 1:54:09But you know what I rewards and I think the arcades is
- 1:54:12incredible. Um, I think he is good.
- 1:54:16In ways that people don't ever talk about it being good.
- 1:54:19So it kind of makes it Genuinely astounding, I mean yeah I think
- 1:54:23the the effects and the ambition, just of the whole
- 1:54:26thing really help it. I think.
- 1:54:30I also get bored of people talking about Bubble, right?
- 1:54:32But I think even if even if it was commercially available and
- 1:54:36it was a bit, it was a bit crap at the time, which it wasn't,
- 1:54:39but even if it was who cares, who cares?
- 1:54:42That's the, I always think that we're bad effects and talk to
- 1:54:44you. I think.
- 1:54:45But, who cares is all part of the fund?
- 1:54:47If you can't enjoy, if you can't enjoy Kenmore fighting his own
- 1:54:50hand with green bubble, wrap around it then, yeah, this, this
- 1:54:53is not, this is not the show for you.
- 1:54:55Bless you, Elliot, we need more young people.
- 1:54:57Like you like, I was five going on six when this came out and I
- 1:55:02don't remember that. I don't remember.
- 1:55:04That's all I'm A lot, it's older than that.
- 1:55:07I mean, wasn't he was, you know, it's all you Joe.
- 1:55:33okay, the idea of a young man Scientology, sorry but I don't
- 1:56:00care. Oh yeah, I think it's sort of
- 1:56:04shifted from being at the time, you know, genuine sort of, you
- 1:56:07know, we're using something that people don't know about.
- 1:56:09So it is gonna look very effective for what we want it to
- 1:56:13do. And then it's kind of shifted
- 1:56:15into this little bits now, almost like become a litmus test
- 1:56:17for yeah, whether or not you have a tolerance for those kind
- 1:56:20of things. But no, I, I absolutely, I
- 1:56:22absolutely love it. And I think it works invite all
- 1:56:24that, and I mean, the design work of Roger Murray Leach, I
- 1:56:28think, is is a real highlight, in this, the the room, the cryo
- 1:56:32chamber, where everybody is, I only took me until I think
- 1:56:36watching, maybe one of the the making of documentary is to
- 1:56:39realize that there is a mirror in the set that makes it look
- 1:56:42bigger than it is I so sold on on that illusion of how giant
- 1:56:48this was that I didn't know. Is that?
- 1:56:49Oh, yes. And I always kind of wish I
- 1:56:54hadn't noticed it because it's, you know I was so still so sold
- 1:56:58on on that illusion but just the size of it you totally totally
- 1:57:01believed that, that scale. But yeah, I did.
- 1:57:06Yeah. Ken's Ken's are more.
- 1:57:07Is Noah, is is a standout and so is Wendy.
- 1:57:09Williams is Vira. Their performance is a
- 1:57:11magnificent, but it is. It's it's just, it's charm.
- 1:57:16It's fun. There's character Dynamics.
- 1:57:18I love the Sumer that's walking on the circular outside, bit of
- 1:57:22the beacon. You know?
- 1:57:23And I don't know what you'd call it.
- 1:57:24But there's there's the, the big the big circle that goes around
- 1:57:28the top where you can walk through.
- 1:57:29And I think it's it just looks Charming, but you can kind of
- 1:57:34put it in the perspective or, you know, if you're watching it
- 1:57:37on a on a little TV set at the time, you're not going to notice
- 1:57:39that their fairy lights stuck. Just black and the bottom of the
- 1:57:44four is kind of visible. And even then, like I said with
- 1:57:50the ball, right? It doesn't matter.
- 1:57:51I'm never taking out of the story because of how Strong.
- 1:57:55The writing is how strong the cast are and yeah a definite
- 1:58:01highlight. For, for me for this season, and
- 1:58:05I think, yeah, I think you mentioned it joke, but the the
- 1:58:07same way when Sarah James calling through the calling,
- 1:58:11through the vent and the doctor has to shout or sexist
- 1:58:14platitudes at her to encourage her through the other side is a
- 1:58:17really lovely bit of humor and warmth between them as a real.
- 1:58:21Great moment. That's been stuck in something
- 1:58:23before, you know. I'm not saying what mine.
- 1:58:25Yeah, did someone shout sex is platitude that you to get you to
- 1:58:35move? It was it just quickly know I I
- 1:58:39absolutely absolutely adore adore this so even if it's if
- 1:58:44it's particularly lofty reputation.
- 1:58:45So I'm going to say keep oh wait for someone to bring this down
- 1:58:50though. Joe, would you like to go next?
- 1:58:55One of the best films I think. He's, I mean, you could say
- 1:59:00basically it's almost the same as the first episode of the
- 1:59:03Daleks isn't it? Because you've got Vice City is
- 1:59:05just the regulars. They go to mysterious place,
- 1:59:08they wander around this Pebble. And then what to the end is a
- 1:59:12horrible monster appears, which basically is the first episode
- 1:59:16of the doll Lakes, but it's incredible, you know, it's just
- 1:59:20like he's I think it possibly is one of the best first episode to
- 1:59:24get you hooked. Do you think it's, you know,
- 1:59:28John lucari wrote the first grade and then Robert Holmes
- 1:59:31rewrote it. Yeah and I have heard the John
- 1:59:34lucari version now and and there is a lot of.
- 1:59:37Yeah, the regulars just walking around not meeting anybody and
- 1:59:42I'm wondering if it's that 60s because he was 60, right?
- 1:59:44Yes. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:59:46Probably. I like very I think it's really
- 1:59:49good. We have the strong older woman
- 1:59:51as well, which is always good because, you know, from the fact
- 1:59:54that we don't have many women, you know, that we don't have any
- 1:59:57older women, you know, we get gradually, get them.
- 2:00:00So, sort of like there's like the fact that the people that
- 2:00:03try to save and really nice, people are never be good.
- 2:00:07Nice. We think about the whole thing
- 2:00:09that you destroyed. So we're going to say we're
- 2:00:14going to have this very small. they say, it's alright with
- 2:00:18chosen every body but then, you know, everyone who's turned off
- 2:00:23his wife, white and white Posh really, you know?
- 2:00:28But then It's the same with the same time when one people that
- 2:00:32try to say that South Africans aren't very nice.
- 2:00:35So it's always quite a thing that you think, you know, you're
- 2:00:37trying to say these people but are they really worth saving?
- 2:00:41And that completely guys are sort of very middle class and
- 2:00:46they're very rough. And yeah, while the word weren't
- 2:00:52set up in the ark Exactly, you know and leave that they you
- 2:00:56know every you know they have racist towards like the doctor,
- 2:01:01you know, you'll regressive, you know you're going to contaminate
- 2:01:04us, you know, that's very it's very diverse basically.
- 2:01:08You know, we're going to be acceptable.
- 2:01:09We have our baby pure gene pool. You know, we think so the rocks
- 2:01:14or you know, you could say there's nothing to connect
- 2:01:16those. But there's these underlying
- 2:01:17themes that, you know, the legacy of the second world war
- 2:01:24and the Nazis and the Japanese that last song, but still here
- 2:01:27to die. You can see that, you know, he
- 2:01:29goes all from, you know, it's a very long line and, you know,
- 2:01:33the memory is and the sort of things that happen, that Linger,
- 2:01:36The Long. You know, it's the fact that you
- 2:01:38picked on every single, the last intentional very, very maybe
- 2:01:48it's not, maybe it's just not one of those, you know, is that
- 2:01:50sort of, you know, in the cold show.
- 2:01:53So I'm consciously, you put these things in, you know,
- 2:01:56they'll probably asked always, you know, she's saying with the
- 2:01:59dolly, you know, because they were space Nazi is one.
- 2:02:03That was a whole point of them. Maybe they're not.
- 2:02:06That was sort of, you know, that's a very intentional sort
- 2:02:10of use your butt. My, you know, just because it's
- 2:02:12in, it's in the sauce, you know, we got these people who are
- 2:02:16right in the 70s. It's like what involved in the
- 2:02:20war they go up after the war? They came to involved in the war
- 2:02:24and I was very sort of and why we sort of forget that, you
- 2:02:29know, because my parents my my dad fought in the second world
- 2:02:32war because I had. No, my granddad for in a second
- 2:02:34world war. So, you know, that sort of the
- 2:02:36Legacy does something gone with your doing it consciously
- 2:02:39unconsciously. It's still It's still going to
- 2:02:42be there. You can't, you know, you can't
- 2:02:44think of yourself, says all colors.
- 2:02:48All great but we get no hint of that in the casting and we don't
- 2:02:52get any hint of it in the script.
- 2:02:53I don't think no, you know but doctors being a doctor missed.
- 2:02:59Yeah, a different like a different era.
- 2:03:02Maybe let's would have, would have made it a bit more white
- 2:03:07supremacist themes. I think it's it's just and I I'm
- 2:03:12not wishing to cast dispersions on the production at the time,
- 2:03:15but I'm possibly about to it's the Assumption of what is
- 2:03:19normality. So if you're Basel level for
- 2:03:24normal, if your base level for sort of having all colors and
- 2:03:30all cruise is a lot of white people.
- 2:03:31And oh, one of them is a woman because that's what is the
- 2:03:36general Norm in what year used before, then you'll put that in
- 2:03:42and somebody will watch it and they'll either go hang on a
- 2:03:45minute, or it would just go straight over their heads
- 2:03:47because I have thought about it because that's what what they
- 2:03:51watch looks like. Yeah, it's partly that it's
- 2:03:55partly the assumption that It's like saying I work with, I'm not
- 2:04:00an archivist but I work with an archives now.
- 2:04:02And there's lots of chalk about neutrality and archives and
- 2:04:05actually how archives have never been quote unquote neutral
- 2:04:09because what's perceived just the neutral position is the
- 2:04:12white Western. Yeah, sometimes my all sometimes
- 2:04:16not position but if you can consider that like in the
- 2:04:21history of medicine, for instance if what was considered
- 2:04:24the normal Baseline Wars? A white male.
- 2:04:29And everything else was was, was, was a different slightly
- 2:04:31different version of that. Then you see what I mean.
- 2:04:35I'm possibly talking myself out and that is the visibility,
- 2:04:39isn't it? If you think it's like nothing,
- 2:04:42you know, it's representation as well.
- 2:04:43And then again, you see. So, you know, itself thing about
- 2:04:46history is history is written by the people who, you know, have
- 2:04:50you know, one have the education to you know, it's the old pitch
- 2:04:54by the big sister's, you know. But if it's you know, We have
- 2:04:59another story written by a woman yet has not been no, that's not
- 2:05:03an Enlightenment is it. So telling know, isn't it?
- 2:05:06It's so telling that everybody that wakes up on the ark is
- 2:05:09white middle class, you know, an educated.
- 2:05:14And then they cast foreign actors in The sontaran
- 2:05:18Experiment, the ones that weren't sensor.
- 2:05:20The Arc are foreign Dirty. Bit course, I think that again,
- 2:05:27they think all the people out on the beacon.
- 2:05:29Oh yeah, that's the old country. This old thing about the
- 2:05:34colonization, you know you look back on you see all, you know,
- 2:05:37he got the Empire falling to bits at this time.
- 2:05:40You know, it's started, you know, we got you know all these
- 2:05:43colonies are basically going looking back at which the old
- 2:05:48country there. You know, that old weird new
- 2:05:50we're going to we can live without you.
- 2:05:52So in a way that you've got the same thing happening from two
- 2:05:57completely different, And viewpoints.
- 2:05:59You've got the you've got these, you've got the, you know, good
- 2:06:02thing. You know, the people that, you
- 2:06:03know, the Empire on the space on the beacon, you know, the why
- 2:06:08British Empire is saying, you know, where do you know when I
- 2:06:11swear here we go. Then you've got the people who
- 2:06:13went out You know, did you know, went out to the colonies, came
- 2:06:17back, look at you and go. What did you do?
- 2:06:19You were just like to sleep without 10,000 years you know
- 2:06:22the ones out there doing it. So it's very you getting it from
- 2:06:26two different viewpoints but me, he said the old thing, you know,
- 2:06:31version of dinosaurs, you know, extreme right wing and extremely
- 2:06:35they have a lot more in common than the people in the middle.
- 2:06:38And this is very much this, you know, you've got these sorts of
- 2:06:42You know, two extremes going on. It feels every bit you know, the
- 2:06:46segregation in the mutants, it was every bit like that to me.
- 2:06:50Yes. So and then again, you know, you
- 2:06:53don't like this and then you get the ultimate sort of, you know,
- 2:07:02When we go into Genesis, you know, there's a whole different
- 2:07:04all-time. Yeah, that's the sort of a very
- 2:07:06culmination the whole thing. But I'm gonna put it through
- 2:07:10just all those because it doesn't know I like it because
- 2:07:15it brings up all these things. You know.
- 2:07:17You can say, you know, we can look into it and sort of a very
- 2:07:21intellectual way, you know, there's but it does I think you
- 2:07:24know, we have got it. You know this basically is the
- 2:07:27start of Tom really. As a you know robot you can see
- 2:07:30is the start. But you know, as I said it's
- 2:07:32that's left over per between this is This is the beginning of
- 2:07:36pinch group homes. And you suddenly think, oh,
- 2:07:40Some, you know, this is different.
- 2:07:43This is going, this is sort of almost season 7 serious levels.
- 2:07:47It is, you know, I mean, I think the sets are great.
- 2:07:50I don't think that's a great. I think it's great.
- 2:07:53It's very Deep Space Nine. Isn't it?
- 2:07:57Up. Yeah.
- 2:08:02Oh yeah, it's very good. But the space was like if space
- 2:08:06was very clean and clinical. So it's like, 2001 isn't,
- 2:08:10everything is white. And spinach has space, was even
- 2:08:13though when you look at like the actual, like, the Apollo
- 2:08:15missions are basically 10 for it and then that's nothing like
- 2:08:18that. And this is like, this is
- 2:08:20synonymous space isn't? It's not reality space but it's
- 2:08:23the one time where that clinical, yeah, white light
- 2:08:27works because highly because it with the winner and grubs a nice
- 2:08:32terrify, the thing, you know, this is basically is it's one of
- 2:08:35those. Like they have those places
- 2:08:36where Deposited like see Banks, you know, whether deposited like
- 2:08:42seeds. So like, you know, if there's a
- 2:08:45nuclear apocalypse or something, we've got things, you know,
- 2:08:47somewhere, very sterile and everything which fits in because
- 2:08:51they all come out and they've got their white uniforms on.
- 2:08:53And also the fact that they're all functions, all those people.
- 2:08:56They've been chosen genetically, but they all functions.
- 2:09:00You know not by viruses. Will he's the commander?
- 2:09:03I'm this, you're the technician, almost lost their Humanity in.
- 2:09:07You know, this is what we want to say for the future.
- 2:09:11We don't want to save you because, you know, you're a nice
- 2:09:14person or you can, you know, you complete the wrong or you're
- 2:09:17going to bring something home. Sure, you're there because you
- 2:09:20are function. You know, your technician, you
- 2:09:23do this, you do that? which again, and again, you
- 2:09:27know, that's it you know, a thesis is that what we all want
- 2:09:30to end up living like You know, they say that what the future
- 2:09:33Bears you know, the basically you're not a person, you're your
- 2:09:36job but I still wanted to go through that.
- 2:09:41Last part of that lighting though, is, yeah, in this
- 2:09:45occasion as well. It's so bright.
- 2:09:47There's literally nowhere to hide in this.
- 2:09:50They'll find you because they're big big empty bright rooms.
- 2:09:54Okay, keep looking anyway. Sorry.
- 2:09:57There's not, there's no hiding in the shadows because they're
- 2:09:59on a Shadows. Okay, so that's so this one's
- 2:10:02going through because it's three.
- 2:10:03Can I go next? Lucy?
- 2:10:05Is that all right? Yeah, um, because I'm gonna,
- 2:10:10yeah, I'm gonna keep this because yes, despite the bubble
- 2:10:13wrap. Which, I mean, I saw this when I
- 2:10:16was first, saw it when I was about sort of 16717.
- 2:10:19So I was deeply embarrassed by the bubble wrap.
- 2:10:23And I wish they could maybe just put a little bit of slime or
- 2:10:26just made it look a little bit more mucousy.
- 2:10:29And anyway, You know, as Victoria would try, you've been
- 2:10:34through, would say try figure. But yeah, it works.
- 2:10:39And I think the acting is enough to To to make it work as you say
- 2:10:45that bit where the door opens and Noah's sort of half half.
- 2:10:50We're Half Human, it is really really gruesome but it's green
- 2:10:55so therefore you kind of get away with it.
- 2:10:59Wendy Williams's Vira, I think she's brilliant.
- 2:11:02This is, this is a very thoughtful nuanced performance.
- 2:11:06She's not treating it like a kid's show, and there's a lot of
- 2:11:10they do. Rodney Bennett has a lot of
- 2:11:12close-ups of her as so you get this little, you know, when she,
- 2:11:16she first wakes up and then she's sort of looking around
- 2:11:20her. And then she's noticed the
- 2:11:21doctor and Harry sets standing there.
- 2:11:23Oh, So yeah, she is quite clinical but as the story goes
- 2:11:29through you see her softening and you see her smiling and
- 2:11:34she's yeah, it's such a really good performance.
- 2:11:38He only other thing I've seen Wendy Williams in his tenko and
- 2:11:42she's completely different in that.
- 2:11:45She's a very sort of Jolly happy person.
- 2:11:47And unfortunately her what happens to his really horrible.
- 2:11:53Um, but yeah, she's she's such a good actress.
- 2:11:56She's not, she's not phoning it in or Hamming it up because it's
- 2:12:00Doctor Who she's really putting some thought into this.
- 2:12:03Yeah, the sets are very impressive.
- 2:12:06I kind of wish they'd turn the lights down a little bit. maybe,
- 2:12:10you know, just at the beginning where the Where the sort of?
- 2:12:15I mean yeah at the beginning when the time is arrives is in
- 2:12:18darkness but then you get it really bright and It does make
- 2:12:22everything look a bit sort of MDF, but that's what it is,
- 2:12:26isn't it? I love the bit where the doctor
- 2:12:30and Sarah are in, you know, Sarah stuck in the tunnel and
- 2:12:32he's going around. It's very similar to about
- 2:12:36seeing in Georgia to the world. But for me, where Joy to the
- 2:12:40World doesn't work is because I don't see any relationship
- 2:12:43between the doctor and joy. And I do see shooter being very,
- 2:12:48very harsh and aggressive whereas Tom's clearly playing it
- 2:12:52clearly played for Laughs here. So, it's a really nice, welcome
- 2:12:56bit of humor in what is a very dark story, if not with the
- 2:13:01lights down low, Harry's quite good in this.
- 2:13:04He's yeah, he's sort of slightly out of his depth but I love the
- 2:13:11image of him with the fishing guns firing and shooting at the
- 2:13:14wear and Grub, which looks really dodgy, but there we go.
- 2:13:18Um, and he gets this really mean look on his face when he's doing
- 2:13:25it. Yeah, we look at his like, I'm
- 2:13:29Gonna Get You, these lovely, beautiful, happy, you know,
- 2:13:33sometimes confused sometimes smiling.
- 2:13:35But anyway these guys right? Get you that is most okay in
- 2:13:43this but funniest as well. So first rule of the sea
- 2:13:46Gremlins can get into everything.
- 2:13:48Okay. Yes yeah.
- 2:13:58If I was, if I was to be nitpicky, the guy playing
- 2:14:03Liberty is a bit of a wet lettuce.
- 2:14:05Now, it's nice to know that there's gays in the future.
- 2:14:08Great, I'm not passing any, any aspersions on his sexuality but
- 2:14:13he's, he's just wet and the bit wary Falls over with that little
- 2:14:17blue star on his. It's not not the best.
- 2:14:20Directed death scene, ever industry, who is it casters?
- 2:14:25So anyone on this call but no straight man would have hair
- 2:14:29that perfectly confused. Okay.
- 2:14:31Fair enough and Richardson Morgan we haven't mentioned him
- 2:14:35as well as Rogan everybody. Yeah they're all polished but
- 2:14:39he's quite sort of vary. A bit of a homeless.
- 2:14:42White boy is somebody once described him so yeah it's been
- 2:14:45a snitch up. There's been a snitch up.
- 2:14:47Yeah. So I yeah.
- 2:14:50I'm gonna I'm gonna, I'm gonna keep this one as well.
- 2:14:52Lucy, I keep thinking Lucy's in black and white because of all
- 2:14:57the dolls Beyond or a black and white and then I remember know
- 2:15:00she's in color. Yeah, just about, um, Yeah, I'm
- 2:15:04Gonna Keep it too. There are things about it that I
- 2:15:07have a weird. I think I must have seen a
- 2:15:11repeat of this, because either that, or I did actually watch it
- 2:15:14when I was very young. And I remembered it because when
- 2:15:16I first watched it again on, repeat a few years ago, I
- 2:15:21thought, I was sure that I'd remembered that this was the 5th
- 2:15:24doctor in this story with the grub.
- 2:15:26And it was in my mind very clearly, just like it was in my
- 2:15:30mind, very clearly that there were lots of stories where
- 2:15:32people almost got turned into Cybermen, and there was one, it
- 2:15:37was attack of the Cybermen, the just the one story, but it made
- 2:15:40such an impression on me that I it took lots of stories.
- 2:15:44Yeah. I quite like it.
- 2:15:46I mean if you if you pick it apart, it does come to Pieces
- 2:15:49quite easily. But then so lots of Doctor Who
- 2:15:51stories. It is unpleasant eugenesis in
- 2:15:55space. I don't think that we're
- 2:16:00necessarily. I mean like we're supposed to
- 2:16:03want them to live because the doctor wants them to live and
- 2:16:05the doctor at the moment is The good guy.
- 2:16:08So we're not questioning his motives from that point of view.
- 2:16:11If he says that Humanity, a wonderful and ingenious and
- 2:16:14reaching for the stars, then yeah.
- 2:16:16Okay. Fine.
- 2:16:17These nasty people can live. I think the grub is quite creepy
- 2:16:21and I think it will be perhaps be better if it had been able to
- 2:16:24leave like a slug trail behind it.
- 2:16:27But that would have been far too complicated.
- 2:16:29I'm sure for the time. Yeah.
- 2:16:31Noah's transformation is he's horrible and realistic because
- 2:16:34he sells it so well. We should absorb the human.
- 2:16:49Know. No.
- 2:17:05Just very tired. But in my mind, getting stuck.
- 2:17:14Breathe. She will die.
- 2:17:21Must save our people, you must. And Joint insects are always
- 2:17:43scary because they should be giant.
- 2:17:46So they look weird. Harry's a clumsy idiot.
- 2:17:51He's like he's a doctor. Okay, it works.
- 2:17:56If you forget it works, if you forget what he's supposed to be.
- 2:18:00That he supposed to be a member of the Navy and he's supposed to
- 2:18:02be a medical practitioner. If he's just some nitwit from
- 2:18:05the Cricket Club who wandered in, then that's fine.
- 2:18:08Otherwise, it starts to come to Pieces, but no operations on
- 2:18:11May. So tell me that also, for some
- 2:18:14reason, an obviously I didn't notice this at all, when I was
- 2:18:17younger watching it and I, but because to me now, Sarah's
- 2:18:21clothes get changed again. Very quickly in the time.
- 2:18:25They got. No I mean in the when she goes
- 2:18:29from the beginning to the port and at the end, she goes in the
- 2:18:33Tardis comes back. Her and how are we going at all?
- 2:18:35This week has been and then she comes back, she's out of that
- 2:18:39thing, isn't she? But that the thing, it happened
- 2:18:42invasion of the dinosaurs, which invasion of the dinosaurs.
- 2:18:44If you think about it too closely, he's really freaking
- 2:18:47creepy. These men changing her clothes,
- 2:18:50unless it was Edith from a lower who's also very creepy in them
- 2:18:54into the denim outfit. And in this, she, she goes from
- 2:18:57her ordinary outfit into the, the space suit outfit, which is
- 2:19:02I assume that's the technology that does that right?
- 2:19:05I know it's still strange. Yeah.
- 2:19:08But I like I like the other the other actors I think they do it
- 2:19:11very well. I think we do.
- 2:19:14Before we start thinking too hard about who these people
- 2:19:16actually are? We do kind of care about them
- 2:19:18and want them to survive. And and there's a good
- 2:19:22resolution in which is hangs which is a sort of a hang on
- 2:19:28from other things and also goes back to goes onwards in to say
- 2:19:32waterstones where the person who is Transforming saves.
- 2:19:38Like, so in waters, Mars, the rocket.
- 2:19:40I hate Waters of Mars now because Adelaide.
- 2:19:42But the, the rocket crashes and that Sort of saves the day so it
- 2:19:47doesn't get to earth in this. Noah Stakes it up, he's a
- 2:19:51transforming, but he's going to do it anyway and his Humanity
- 2:19:55will win out. So that was a little bit
- 2:19:57verbally, but yes, I'm going to keep it.
- 2:19:59Five for five. Again, this is one of those
- 2:20:02lovely Seasons. I think should we go to round?
- 2:20:05Two of the overview comments and Anthony Carroll says you never
- 2:20:10get a second chance to make a first impression.
- 2:20:12That's why I think so many love season 12.
- 2:20:15When I when it's really robot, they laugh.
- 2:20:18Tom's performance and wrap. Hang on a minute.
- 2:20:21Is this about robot? Oh no, it is about the season
- 2:20:23Tom's before there's a few of us from me off in robot and a solid
- 2:20:28team with him. The rest of season 12 is patchy,
- 2:20:30but it doesn't matter as the birth of Baker, is Julius.
- 2:20:35The next Memphis shows? I think this is one of my
- 2:20:38favorite Seasons. It's one, I will go to for
- 2:20:40Comfort viewing, it's got everything I want and feel
- 2:20:42nostalgic about me. This is Doctor Who everyone's
- 2:20:46cup of tea, but I love it. So Tom's, darling, Cybermen
- 2:20:50shiny robots, and giant space bugs.
- 2:20:52Lobbyists calling Hicks. It's amazing.
- 2:20:55Not only how quickly hinge cliff and home Slough off the old skin
- 2:20:58of the show. Low but also how quickly they
- 2:21:01make it feel like their new way is, the default having Tom
- 2:21:04leasing in on their own. For the first part of our really
- 2:21:06helps to cut a very clear dividing line.
- 2:21:09Tim Carter says a great set of stories.
- 2:21:11We've only one real clunker. Again, we're all thinking of
- 2:21:14something. Different, Tom is great from the
- 2:21:16off. He's just the doctor.
- 2:21:18Listen here, make a perfect team with Tom.
- 2:21:20They all clearly love each other in cliff and Holmes, bring a
- 2:21:24fresh Vitality to the show, which had become a bit stale.
- 2:21:27Love it. Matt, Floyd really interesting
- 2:21:30season, a contrast to Mark onwards.
- 2:21:32So what had gone on before? Tom is giving it.
- 2:21:36Giving it he's all acting as supposed to perform before.
- 2:21:39He knows if the audience will like him listening adorable
- 2:21:43home, she's having the time of his life and rewriting.
- 2:21:46The doctors came in Evans says, a transitional season with
- 2:21:50respect to tone. It's interesting to compare
- 2:21:53Tom's performance and this is referencing back to the content.
- 2:21:56We've just had here to later ones after he knows the audience
- 2:21:59likes him. Paul Kresser says season. 12 is
- 2:22:03a strange one. I feel like I should love it
- 2:22:06more than I do. It has a wonderful team of Tom,
- 2:22:08Liz and Ian Marta all on top form, some great ideas on Tara,
- 2:22:13and Holmes, and Hinchcliffe. And yet somehow, it doesn't sit
- 2:22:17there among my favorites. And I don't know why Rick Maloy.
- 2:22:21The best classic season, hands down some Bakery so fresh and
- 2:22:26can't possibly be human. But once it's like, you're
- 2:22:29watching Doctor Who rather than an actor playing them, Sarah is
- 2:22:33better with Harry and Hinchcliffe, does not done
- 2:22:35enough to hit a repetitive formula making this the peak.
- 2:22:39Beloi says it's a bloody good season.
- 2:22:44If you skip robot. Tom Baker, grabs, the role with
- 2:22:47both hands and makes it his own, the team of doctors Sarah and
- 2:22:50Harry is one of the best. Some absolute Peak Doctor Who
- 2:22:53this season. CSO French says, wow, what a
- 2:22:56start clearly all over the place.
- 2:22:58Like Tom filled with an immediate confidence.
- 2:23:01Belonging issues like a broken, collar, bones.
- 2:23:04Getting the Arkansas space, right?
- 2:23:05And needlessly recreating and i t z triumphant cast.
- 2:23:09Oh God, they're here. Oh, the Plucky girl.
- 2:23:13The other guy Genesis is the obvious standout You know what,
- 2:23:18I'm going to say to everybody, don't you?
- 2:23:20Give me a bae bae. Give me an orange orange.
- 2:23:27Give me my car. I can.
- 2:23:31Thank you, hybrid of two production teams with at least
- 2:23:35two Bonafide Classics. If it feels like a concept album
- 2:23:38of a season much like series one of modern who I thought this
- 2:23:42season. We start six years of my
- 2:23:44favorite title sequence. Keep all of it.
- 2:23:47I'll do that big orange Michael. That's not the point of the
- 2:23:50show, but you Carol says, with pleasing.
- 2:23:55Briskness, all stories have a pleasing death count?
- 2:23:58Can I explain that please? He's a patron.
- 2:24:02Okay, well on one for the first one and said yeah I love all the
- 2:24:05doctors with huge death counts and started to not sort of name
- 2:24:09them all and I've asked him to rank his list of.
- 2:24:11And so now the air this is the joke.
- 2:24:13Now is Andy Carroll. I mean he lost Doctor Who but
- 2:24:17don't get too close or I might murder you, Johnny, Carol.
- 2:24:22He lives in the same town as me. So I think he's in the library
- 2:24:28window right behind you. Look, Johnny, Morris rice,
- 2:24:32extraordinaire says, Robert Holmes, delighting, and doing
- 2:24:36all the stuff that Barry, and Terry wouldn't let him do, and
- 2:24:39Philip Hinchcliffe giving everything a, much tighter edit.
- 2:24:42So, not a second, is wasted. And finally, how and the best
- 2:24:47we've obviously kept to last. It's Die Hard.
- 2:24:50Oh, It should feel like it's plain safe.
- 2:24:55And yet, hitch could arrives and pushes away from that.
- 2:24:58Safety to scare the little bugger.
- 2:25:00So, death territory, Thomas eager to please and giving it
- 2:25:03everything to be a success and restructures the show in his own
- 2:25:06image. Listen, I love a marker.
- 2:25:08Probably good foils. So let's just say everyone
- 2:25:11except for John all over this. I love this season.
- 2:25:14Yeah, I think so. Ellie, would you like to have
- 2:25:18the choice of either revenge of the sight of men or Genesis?
- 2:25:21The dog's? What a conference to say, not,
- 2:25:25not an easy Choice know. Um, I I would like to talk about
- 2:25:31revenge of the Cybermen because I don't know how I feel about
- 2:25:34revenge of the sidemen. So maybe if I talked to
- 2:25:37everybody for about revenge assignment, for 10 minutes or
- 2:25:39land on some kind of point of how I actually feel about the
- 2:25:42story, okay? Because it was always the one
- 2:25:46from the season that I really never liked like really really
- 2:25:51ranked it quite low. In my, in my opinion, I am big
- 2:25:55Cybermen fan and I just think it was very, very Tatty and And
- 2:26:03quite appalling. But I did re-watch it and I had
- 2:26:06quite a lot of. I had quite a lot of fun with it
- 2:26:08is objectively not good. It is not well-written or well
- 2:26:12thought out and it's a little embarrassing but I thought
- 2:26:15continuing its a four part. I was thinking this was going to
- 2:26:17be the, you know, the the slog of the series but considering
- 2:26:22it's four parts. I think it it Paces through
- 2:26:25everything very quickly It got great Camp funny at the sidemen.
- 2:26:29Having guns in their heads, is a really interesting bit of design
- 2:26:34work that is undercut by the need, for them to have their
- 2:26:37hands on their hips as they fire them.
- 2:26:39So trusting strutting about like they had a baking, a statement
- 2:26:44You have your hands on your hips, Elliot when you're firing.
- 2:26:53Oh good. You do this, though?
- 2:26:59I always try to think of a witty follow-up, but I can't.
- 2:27:02I just end up getting all embarrassed.
- 2:27:03Oh yeah. I I think, I think the planet
- 2:27:12vouga is again, I can't, I can't not complain about things like,
- 2:27:19Bubble wrap and toy tanks. And then complained about vulgar
- 2:27:22is just clearly some some caves and none of it is made of gold,
- 2:27:26but I think the Vogons, I think the Vogons design is is really
- 2:27:30well. Well, realized they are Creepy,
- 2:27:35creepy little guys. They kind of remind me of, I'm
- 2:27:41really sorry. I should know the characters
- 2:27:42named, but the, you know, the, the character in the towns of
- 2:27:45wing, Chiang, you know, the the Assassin character.
- 2:27:50They've got a similar sort of face sculpt.
- 2:27:53Oh yes the little um yeah yes but, He's basically unfoldable
- 2:28:06as a story. I don't, he's in comprehensible.
- 2:28:11Um, but I am just talking myself, right?
- 2:28:14So because you know what I'm gonna be.
- 2:28:15I'm going to be controversy, you want to controversy.
- 2:28:17I'm gonna say in spite of all of its lunacy. edibility to make
- 2:28:22sense and boring this at the time, I'm going to keep revenge
- 2:28:25of the side men for being fun and for strapping, gigantic
- 2:28:30caught in bombs to people's back.
- 2:28:31I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna say, you have to say, God bless
- 2:28:39the youth. Okay, should we go for the
- 2:28:43comments? Paul cresser.
- 2:28:45It is probably the weakest story of the season, but I do have a
- 2:28:48soft sport soft spot for it. I think memories of the target
- 2:28:52book and it being the first VHS release though.
- 2:28:55Not the first, I was able to get hold of help with this.
- 2:28:57It's also one of those stories that's really lifted by the
- 2:29:00updated effects. When before I changed my mind on
- 2:29:04the story, I do remember finding out the first VHS released, I
- 2:29:07thought blindly imagine. Imagine your first release being
- 2:29:09Revengers assignment blimey. Luke Simpsons says, well, it's a
- 2:29:15certain kind of nugget but it's easy, the best.
- 2:29:17I meant story of the 70s, Darren lit around us.
- 2:29:20It loses. I lose interest once they hit
- 2:29:22vulgar the vulgar masks are hideous.
- 2:29:24It's probably the Nostalgia of it being an early video released
- 2:29:28that makes me feel warmly towards it.
- 2:29:31Then whether it's any good. Sorry that was terribly well
- 2:29:35read outside. Cliff Chapman better than its
- 2:29:38reputation side leader is silly. But the rest of it is solid
- 2:29:41nuclear effects, help as a complete season, it's only
- 2:29:46missing icons to bookend Harry, really?
- 2:29:48Most of the very early VHS releases, probably the first
- 2:29:52complete season on VHS. Glenn Fitzgerald says might be a
- 2:29:57bit plotted and the sets and costumes a bit questionable, but
- 2:30:00the scenes of those sidemen in the caves, always be iconic
- 2:30:02sleep and make up for a pretty predictable storyline and the
- 2:30:06ReUse sets. And who doesn't love a phallic
- 2:30:08looking Cybermen spaceship. It does look like a massive
- 2:30:11cocktail there. It's like a little smiley face.
- 2:30:15You know. He's got a little smiley face
- 2:30:18with just maybe laugh. We have cocks.
- 2:30:21Have smiley faces. Oh, yeah.
- 2:30:23James Lark, incoherent, poorly. Acted poorly directed ugly.
- 2:30:28To look at an intentionally funny like space around.
- 2:30:31Makes the return of the side men, not only anti-climax, but
- 2:30:35in Paris and his curse with one of the worst schools Doctor Who
- 2:30:39as ever been lumbered with, I love it.
- 2:30:41Oh, I got, yeah. Mad Paddington says, love the
- 2:30:51idea of returning to know her. But after all that it's just a
- 2:30:55bit Pap and I'm sorry but I'm really not a fan of the sidemen
- 2:30:58upgrade for this decade, souls in the fuker.
- 2:31:03Paul Quinn revenge is much better than its reputation.
- 2:31:07Top cast great use of the nerva set, brilliant location, work,
- 2:31:11effortless expansion of cyber history.
- 2:31:13It's a shame homes is dislike of the sidemen made him miss their
- 2:31:17potential as his ultimate ultimate monster with
- 2:31:20transformation and loss of humanity.
- 2:31:22You know with Paul Wright. I mean if I didn't know him as
- 2:31:26well as I'll do I'll say you just deliberately tries to be
- 2:31:29controversial love and all the stories that everyone hates and
- 2:31:32hating on the story for everyone loves.
- 2:31:34But no, he genuinely means what he says, you know.
- 2:31:40Here and Evans. It's a bit rubbish, but it was
- 2:31:44my first VHS brackets, Christmas 1999.
- 2:31:47So, I can't hate it too much. Zygons would have been a better
- 2:31:49end to the season. Jason Thompson revenge is
- 2:31:53perhaps not the best story but it has a lot of good stuff in
- 2:31:55it. Yes, you could have been it for
- 2:31:57people having to attack themselves with assignment.
- 2:32:00The assignment prop, the poor Vogue and masks, Christopher
- 2:32:03Robin's. Odd to take on the side believe
- 2:32:05and the unfortunately Felix ship documents but I say, keep it for
- 2:32:09the gorgeous filming of in wookey hole.
- 2:32:11David Collins had for us and Tom, Baker, just being superb.
- 2:32:15The amount of wonderful stories that Jason Thompson has gone
- 2:32:19afterwards and he keeping this shit.
- 2:32:21Good. Sorry.
- 2:32:25My applied my hand. A big orange Michaels.
- 2:32:31Once again, the Cybermen have a plan that falls apart if you
- 2:32:36think about it too much and I'm not sure why I say would pick
- 2:32:39gold as their weakness to run within the 80s, but I will say
- 2:32:42keep it if only because the target of all thrilled me.
- 2:32:46Peter old, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, I'm standing like
- 2:32:51Harold Steptoe. Oh yeah, sorry, Peter for making
- 2:32:57you sound like, oh, proverbial deer.
- 2:32:59It's not the whole. Why his Vogue in it?
- 2:33:02Califresh branding. Faux par, it's not the whole
- 2:33:04emotional Cybermen mistake. It's not the total machine
- 2:33:07creatures mistake. All the rubbish special effects,
- 2:33:10the new versions on the blue. Rape box set are actually quite
- 2:33:13cool? No, it's the whole damn thing.
- 2:33:15Put together, it just doesn't work.
- 2:33:17Did we really wait seven years for this dross Oscar grout, Joe
- 2:33:22like biting to a premade with no GUI in the middle utterly
- 2:33:26forgettable. Chris, Robbie owning hip acting
- 2:33:29years before she matching into a creamy egg and find enough.
- 2:33:34Nothing inside. Oh, the horror David Gillespie
- 2:33:37Pratt does not deserve its reputation as Midland.
- 2:33:40It's a very produced story and again, Thomas on tiktok form, it
- 2:33:44might be a little less strong than the three proceedings.
- 2:33:46Stories. But it's still an enjoyable
- 2:33:48ride. The tired out there.
- 2:33:50It's a very producer. I mean they're all very
- 2:33:52precisely very, very well produced story.
- 2:33:55Maybe. Yeah.
- 2:33:56Sorry David. If we've missed calligraphy,
- 2:33:59rifle, John Arnold revenge is fine.
- 2:34:04That's not, that's not like a sound by the sorry.
- 2:34:06The idea of the desperate dregs of the Cybermen being at the end
- 2:34:11of their tether and trying one last survival strategy is a good
- 2:34:15one. It'll probably be better
- 2:34:16regarded. If made later in the year when
- 2:34:18the underlying tension of the script by have been better
- 2:34:20brought out all done. I know it's cheap.
- 2:34:24I know it's but it's one of my first bhs's and I love it.
- 2:34:28Reusing the arcs set his genius. Walking horse stuff is amazing.
- 2:34:32The camp cyber leader is a hoot. What's not to love Harry.
- 2:34:36Sullivan is an imbecile Anthony Carroll my first video so very
- 2:34:42fond of its Army plot but fun. Yeah. 10 Andy Parkinson often,
- 2:34:47slated as rubbish. I've got to say, I love this
- 2:34:49one. Yes, the plot has more holes in
- 2:34:52the Swiss cheese, but it's gorgeously Camp fun.
- 2:34:55And I'd rather watch this than Genesis to distort the doctor's
- 2:34:59line. If you don't love this, you're
- 2:35:01an embassy or keep it. Oh, how?
- 2:35:04Rude and deposit James has been Bennett, says, better than Ark
- 2:35:09but the gold makes zero sense. Harry is bullied and insulted.
- 2:35:13Vulgar is a, is a thoroughly bizarre concept of fundamental
- 2:35:16issues in the way, it's presented, but it charms, me
- 2:35:19completely. So, keep especially as, I
- 2:35:21believe in this era of the arc more than the other, right?
- 2:35:26Tim Carter, the only let down in the season.
- 2:35:28It's just so dull. Endless roaming about those
- 2:35:31caves. The Vogons are interesting.
- 2:35:33And the site men aren't menacing in any way, was the use of nerve
- 2:35:37again, makes sense. The whole production looks
- 2:35:39cheap, and Tatty definitely been.
- 2:35:42And Michael storm says the season ends as it starts with
- 2:35:47the story, bathed in the styling of a previous era.
- 2:35:50Unfortunately, this is no deliberate contrast and it feels
- 2:35:53very old-fashioned and out of date.
- 2:35:55Home's bizarre. Home's bizarre.
- 2:35:59Misses the change to fully explore the body horror of the
- 2:36:02Cybermen. Maybe that's our choice.
- 2:36:06A large. Sorry, Michael storm, you know,
- 2:36:11Mike Marshall to me anyway. So who would like to tackle?
- 2:36:16This one's please. All this positive see about
- 2:36:20Avengers assignment. It's okay.
- 2:36:23Go for it. Okay, well now normally I would
- 2:36:27Have three points to say. But, you know, I thought what
- 2:36:30did I say about this on Docker reviews?
- 2:36:32Back in the day, I remember reviewing this and I'll read
- 2:36:34through the review and I went, well, there's nothing I can say
- 2:36:37now that I don't disagree with from back then.
- 2:36:39So I thought, I'd read out the tail end of the review for you,
- 2:36:43all to listen to bless you, people for having the patience.
- 2:36:47So, here we go. This is what doc oh, ho says and
- 2:36:50Joe Ford as well. The Hinchcliffe era is rightly
- 2:36:53celebrated as one of the most Innovative expensive and
- 2:36:56imaginative periods of doctor. But it's worth a Meandering that
- 2:36:59all ears of the show are capable producing their own duffers.
- 2:37:02Revenge of the sidemen is terrible.
- 2:37:05One of those rare examples of the story where pretty much
- 2:37:08everything goes wrong. I will usually go to Great
- 2:37:11Lengths, to find good things to say about the most slated
- 2:37:14stories, but in this case I am stumped.
- 2:37:16It's that bad Hinchcliffe was lumbered with two scripts,
- 2:37:20containing old baddies that he didn't want.
- 2:37:22And while he and homes managed to salvage Genesis of the Daleks
- 2:37:25and shape it into something exceptional, how to draw away
- 2:37:28the same care and attention was lacking in the season.
- 2:37:31The script needs hardcore dissection to make it even
- 2:37:35passable. The dialogue is perversely bad.
- 2:37:37The plot is riddled with logic vacuums.
- 2:37:40You couldn't even call them holes.
- 2:37:42The characterization lacks any finesse.
- 2:37:44The spongy tubular campus Christmas, Cy, And fudge their
- 2:37:49comeback. And by the end of the story,
- 2:37:51they are so ineffective. You actually start to feel quite
- 2:37:53sorry for them, probably not the intended response.
- 2:37:56Not even Tom Baker list Laden or Ian Martha.
- 2:37:59Can raise raise the bar on this story with the leading actor at
- 2:38:03Sea in a script that gives the doctor.
- 2:38:04So little to work with and his companions Swept Away in the
- 2:38:08tide of ineptitude worst. The extraordinary guests staff
- 2:38:12cast our lost somewhere in there, unrecognizable and
- 2:38:15struggling with poorly written Parts.
- 2:38:17When the most exciting thing is a carry blight and store score,
- 2:38:22and the fact that they managed to shoot the story in some real
- 2:38:24caves, you have real problems. Let's talk this one up to
- 2:38:28experience and never mention it again.
- 2:38:30Two out ten. So you keeping it here.
- 2:38:34The music is so full of that, weird popping farting noise.
- 2:38:42It sounds like, every time they come up, the bloody corridors,
- 2:38:46you know, they're not Oh, that's true.
- 2:38:49Yeah, I do love the the electronic editions made though,
- 2:38:57that they are really good. How we need this, isn't it?
- 2:39:03Like yeah you can take your critical blinkers off and watch
- 2:39:07it as a bit of action and adventure but it's not Michael E
- 2:39:10Bryant's best Direction. It's certainly ain't the
- 2:39:12regulars. Best performance is it's in no
- 2:39:15way. Robert Holmes is best rewrite.
- 2:39:17It's just terrible. Yeah, I think it's possibly the
- 2:39:22worst on Baker story. bin well short but sweet even though you
- 2:39:26did cheating, you know, read our review that you written so many
- 2:39:31years ago Oh, goodness. Back then. and, Okay, can I go
- 2:39:39next ladies? Yeah, okay.
- 2:39:42So here comes copyrights iHeart, A Tale Of Youth Christmas 1986.
- 2:39:48It's not a happy time in our house because we lost our
- 2:39:52Granddad a couple of months ago. So there was a very much, a
- 2:39:56concerted effort in our family to make Christmas the best
- 2:39:58Christmas that we'd ever had for my nan.
- 2:40:02Unfortunately, that involves getting for Christmas, the VHS
- 2:40:08of Revenge of the sidemen, which I then, on Christmas evening.
- 2:40:12Make my whole, not my whole family, but my arms uncles, my
- 2:40:17mom and my dad, my two sisters. Watch.
- 2:40:20Why do you hate those people? hi and as soon as as soon as you
- 2:40:27know the credits Fade Out and you get the the image of of Tom
- 2:40:33and Liz and Ian on that CSO Starscape it you know, that sets
- 2:40:38the tone and then you have this Laden going Thank you for that.
- 2:40:43We've made it and my mum's going.
- 2:40:45Oh my goodness. Oh, good, grief!
- 2:40:47Yes, so and then, just sort of when, when pretty much downhill
- 2:40:54from there, I mean, as a 13 year old, I yeah, it was, it was new
- 2:40:59old who would just had trial of a time lord.
- 2:41:02And I, That's actually as grown up me would say, I think that's
- 2:41:08miles, better than this. It's got Tom and it's got
- 2:41:11listeners got in and and they're great.
- 2:41:14It's got a really good cast. But you've got a lot of actors
- 2:41:19who aren't really all of whom have been in Doctor Who before
- 2:41:22you got Kevin Stoney, who acts like our room is half asleep or
- 2:41:28concussed. You've got Ronald Lee Hunt who
- 2:41:32plays yet. Another Commander.
- 2:41:33I think he spent all his life playing commanders and it's not
- 2:41:38bad performance but they're just seems to be It's all stock
- 2:41:43cliche. William Marlow, who's kind of a
- 2:41:46bit of the nice guy in comparison to Mahler, who, I
- 2:41:49mean? He's absolutely chilling as
- 2:41:50Mailer in the mind of evil. You've got oh no Jeremy.
- 2:41:56Wilkin had been in Doctor Who before, but he's sort of the
- 2:42:0170s. Go to for sinister slightly.
- 2:42:04Teutonic looking baddies. He's won in Blake. 7, he turns
- 2:42:08up in the New Avengers and he's quite good.
- 2:42:13But even with that. Oh, David Collings, as for us
- 2:42:16and he's, he's Hamming it up, I think he's but, you know, he
- 2:42:20realizes, he's behind that mask. So rather than doing what
- 2:42:24Michael Wisher does. With that Ross heater up to 11
- 2:42:27and yeah, I just, I would just really love to love this, but
- 2:42:33it's it's just not, not great, is it?
- 2:42:36And, you know, the yeah, we've seen.
- 2:42:39We've seen the location work in Wookie Hall, which is really
- 2:42:43good and that was very, that's seen.
- 2:42:45Around the sort of transmount receptacles with the, with the
- 2:42:49big globes. That's really, beautiful lit.
- 2:42:51But it's, by that time, it's too little too late.
- 2:42:54The dummies pretending to be the dead, body's the music.
- 2:43:00I mean the even as the discontinuity guys says, even
- 2:43:03the titles rubbish, revenge of the sidemen.
- 2:43:08So I guess I'm going to stand here and go with my hands on my
- 2:43:11hips and going. Unfortunately, you will not be
- 2:43:13able to appreciate it. Well, no, I'm sorry, I don't
- 2:43:17appreciate it. And I think on a good day, I
- 2:43:20would probably enjoy it. But no, let's be gotta be harsh
- 2:43:25with this and we was strictly, we can't like them all.
- 2:43:27So I'm putting in the bin. I've just had a message for from
- 2:43:31the Cyber leader. He says, you will be
- 2:43:33fragmentize. Okay?
- 2:43:39So, um, Lucy are you? Are you, as I said at the
- 2:43:43beginning walrus or against us? Oh, I have to admit that this is
- 2:43:48this is been sort of emblematic of my experience of watching.
- 2:43:53Old Doctor, Who is? I, I Have used IMDb a lot while
- 2:44:00I was watching. Mostly to think, what else was
- 2:44:02that actor in? Because I know I know them from
- 2:44:04somewhere or, you know, for other reasons and I would watch
- 2:44:07something and think, well, that wasn't too bad and then I see.
- 2:44:10Oh God. This is the worst episode ever.
- 2:44:12This is a pooling everybody. It's so badly directed and I
- 2:44:15think really I'm just not very Discerning obviously.
- 2:44:19I quite enjoyed it when I watched it the first time it's
- 2:44:24not my favorite. Um, I I think part of the
- 2:44:28problem, the problem that I have with these is the way the vocals
- 2:44:32look. And I think that's a lot of a
- 2:44:36contrast in this season where apart from the sontaran, you've
- 2:44:42got the wiring, which is a big insect and just looks like a big
- 2:44:45insect. You haven't got any other,
- 2:44:47humanoid, aliens that don't look human apart from devros, when he
- 2:44:52comes a lot, So in this, you've got Cybermen, who are
- 2:44:56recognized? What and actually, I found the
- 2:44:58Cybermen more frightening than the darling when I was a child
- 2:45:01because they could turn you into them.
- 2:45:03And that was terrifying to me. I got to meet David Banks who is
- 2:45:08absolutely Charming at an event and thanked him for making me
- 2:45:13run up. The stairs in Fright, when I was
- 2:45:14a child, he took it. Well, but lovely man.
- 2:45:18But yeah, it's very delighted to hear that.
- 2:45:21Yeah, well, it worked. Didn't it job done.
- 2:45:27And thankfully. But yeah, no, it was that was
- 2:45:33really interesting but it's kind of In the same way that people
- 2:45:38said that the sultan experiment was met, I suppose, this is a
- 2:45:42bit as well and it has bits that are sort of threats and action
- 2:45:46and once again, you have them pushing the point that Harry is,
- 2:45:49this comes idiot, which doesn't make sense in The Wider plot.
- 2:45:55the the sort of people in Peril carrying bombs, he's, he's quite
- 2:46:00nerve-wracking because the doctor is in deliberate danger.
- 2:46:05Obviously, I'm a child of the 80s.
- 2:46:08So the idea of Cybermen Being allergic, being fatally allergic
- 2:46:12to Gold. He's just a thing that's just
- 2:46:15How it was because I've seen her shop.
- 2:46:18That's that's how it is. So, I didn't question that at
- 2:46:21all. But I think I think it's hotly.
- 2:46:24The, the suit of the controls between the cyber men, who Okay,
- 2:46:30maybe they're not the best Cybermen, but they're still
- 2:46:32Cybermen. So they bring with them that
- 2:46:34kind of, all of scared, particularly on the ark, where
- 2:46:38you got the Cyber Max, and the things creeping around in the
- 2:46:40dark. And then the vocals who Are too
- 2:46:44much of a contrast to that. You got Vogons, humans and
- 2:46:47Cybermen and with the rest of the season, most of the, most of
- 2:46:50the villains or heroes are vaguely humanoid apart from the
- 2:46:53wiring. And the Vogons has, just such a
- 2:46:56contrast. It's, it feels a bit like you
- 2:46:58saying, it feels like a bit of a step back. and I know people are
- 2:47:04praised for instance, the draconians I found them a bit
- 2:47:09rubbery on first view. So this was another thing where
- 2:47:11people were saying, oh this is amazing, really?
- 2:47:14Okay, whatever. Um, so it's it's the sort of the
- 2:47:19contrast between we've had humans in human or humanoids in
- 2:47:23human situations and now we've got these funny people with
- 2:47:25rubber faces and that probably holds it back a bit.
- 2:47:28I don't mind the music to be honest.
- 2:47:30I'm not really I find. I am more of a synth, soundtrack
- 2:47:36person, probably because I'm a child of the 80s.
- 2:47:38So I find that less intrusive. But yeah, I mean, I guess it
- 2:47:43will probably go in the bin and I could send it there or I don't
- 2:47:48know. I only sleep don't know about
- 2:47:49this one because I did quite enjoy it when I watch it, but I
- 2:47:52completely acknowledge that. It's The there are problems with
- 2:47:56it. I mean, if you save it, Lucy,
- 2:47:58that means it's all down to Joe. It's two apiece.
- 2:48:01It's two piece. Yeah, I don't necessarily but it
- 2:48:04would put Joe in that he oh what the hell will put it in the bin?
- 2:48:09Why not? Oh, I do.
- 2:48:12I do it. I enjoy the final sequence with
- 2:48:15the planet. Heading towards the planet.
- 2:48:17And will they be able to knock? You know, billions in space,
- 2:48:20like red dwarf. I think that works quite well.
- 2:48:23So I just remember, sorry for my youth as well.
- 2:48:27That I had one of these sort of stand up wardrobes and after
- 2:48:31watching this off for all that looks fun, when Tom Baker's
- 2:48:34swinging about on the door, and I did try to, but my wife and
- 2:48:38that wardrobe, there weren't distributed well, and
- 2:48:42unfortunately, the Wardrobe fail, and so did I?
- 2:48:44And I think I may have been slightly concussed.
- 2:48:47I think I've made any sense if I'm honest.
- 2:48:50So that was before Christmas. Yeah.
- 2:48:54But you'd already done that with, with revelation of the, oh
- 2:48:56no, I was throwing it on me, then, yes, parents always finish
- 2:49:02your children's wardrobe to the wall Christmas.
- 2:49:05When we showed, when we watched it at Christmas, my mom saw that
- 2:49:08said, don't you even think about?
- 2:49:11Well, I mean Joe you haven't got a difficult choice but they
- 2:49:18taking Revenge on I know Jerry Davis didn't like the title, but
- 2:49:24it's just like What she's very proud and she's very sick.
- 2:49:29This is very you can tell Jerry Davis hadn't written for the
- 2:49:32show since the 60s. I know Robert Hunter this is but
- 2:49:34this is this could be trials and you could put sprouting into
- 2:49:37this with no problems or server. Now say was being mean to Harry,
- 2:49:42which I don't like. I mean she's sort of like
- 2:49:46Joining in which I think he's not an imbecile know, he didn't
- 2:49:51know. The doctor was on the other side
- 2:49:53of those rocks and he didn't know those harnesses were
- 2:49:55boobies so he's not an imbecile. So that's rude.
- 2:50:00I love my favorite line of all time.
- 2:50:03We turned back and then goes, he said by the way, which is just a
- 2:50:10little bit combat trailers. I love the fact that there's
- 2:50:14little boats and a little train, which is always nice to say,
- 2:50:16calm his up a little shit, and he's like, oh, who's gonna be
- 2:50:24the villain? It's not.
- 2:50:30It. Sorry, it's revisiting again.
- 2:50:33This idea from from Paladin, isn't it?
- 2:50:36You know, the, the person you don't think you can trust.
- 2:50:39Yeah, don't trust them. Yeah.
- 2:50:40No, exactly both sides against each other.
- 2:50:43Um, what happens all wearing plastic netting?
- 2:50:46You're talking about, you know, the word bubble wrap, I mean
- 2:50:48wearing plastic netting, which is just fucking stupid that
- 2:50:54they're planet is made out of the thing that sort of men are
- 2:50:57allergic to and none of them just go grab some gold quick,
- 2:51:00bro. You could say well what does
- 2:51:02that? How can the sober match even go
- 2:51:04in? Its like me, but don't shoot out
- 2:51:10from when they were all about two foot away from me.
- 2:51:12Each other in the caves. He's just very cool.
- 2:51:15There's no bloody women again and there's some of those we
- 2:51:18can't talk with those games. Can you really so participants
- 2:51:22to pretend to be Often by dustbuster which is all good for
- 2:51:27love. My God bless us.
- 2:51:30Actually she sells it, she doesn't.
- 2:51:32She sells it very very well and she knows she's doing that heavy
- 2:51:36breathing. And there's the the virus on her
- 2:51:39neck. She really tells her I mean if
- 2:51:44it's brilliant I mean it's the same thing I did with the green
- 2:51:48death but that's incredible when they did it.
- 2:51:50That's an incredible effects are very Donald Trump.
- 2:51:56He's like Trump Towers. It's Gold Everywhere.
- 2:51:59Okay, outside is. So I'm going to make a Vogue
- 2:52:02great again. On this is ridiculous nonsense
- 2:52:09and the plots ridiculous. But and they waste plus Kevin.
- 2:52:14You feel? So you must buy us all.
- 2:52:17And now you make him do this. It's like, you know, it's like
- 2:52:20what are you doing this through here, it's terrible, but I
- 2:52:24enjoyed watching it. I'm a good old time watching it,
- 2:52:28you know, but it's not very good and it's very much, you know, it
- 2:52:31has that all else has a terrible trout and ending which I know
- 2:52:34they meant you know, it should have gone into terrorism ones.
- 2:52:38And you know you'd say oh you believe in this little
- 2:52:41Cliffhanger to come back to the next season.
- 2:52:43But you think really, you know, it's just the way you want to in
- 2:52:46the series. We just like them going.
- 2:52:47He was like barely got out and ending of just like I could go
- 2:52:51off now. Which I think that, you know,
- 2:52:54exactly. It's really, you know, if you
- 2:52:58know what was left over, poetry, this is left over trails and oh,
- 2:53:04I'm gonna donkey, I had a good time watching it and it's a
- 2:53:07really good things but it is a lot of nonsense and it's just so
- 2:53:11many things. You said they go what?
- 2:53:15How you know? No, I shall take the champion of
- 2:53:18the damn Crown off your head and I'll post it back to Fraser.
- 2:53:21Yeah, you can have it. Thanks to fit me anyway.
- 2:53:23So Oh, Daniel. Oh, we're going on a journey.
- 2:53:27I don't really well. The only person wave in the
- 2:53:30place. Sorry, is it is it is terrible.
- 2:53:33I'm not, but I, I like it hasn't stopped things winning in the
- 2:53:38past. No.
- 2:53:41Um, okay. So hang on Joe.
- 2:53:45Are you just admitting there? That the time monster is
- 2:53:47terrible. No, I was thinking about other
- 2:53:50things. I always have jokingly terrible,
- 2:53:52but it's just wonderful. Right?
- 2:53:55You might say that and you know I never would he has the badding
- 2:54:01of a God oh God. Okay, no sorry.
- 2:54:07Um, okay. So that's four stories down and
- 2:54:12only one of them spent. Oh, two of them.
- 2:54:13Now been kicked out. So it's Genesis, the Daleks
- 2:54:17left. Yes, I thought this was gonna be
- 2:54:20the last one. What, what can you say about
- 2:54:23Jenny? The Darlings, that hasn't been
- 2:54:24said, already nine. I don't think, I don't think I
- 2:54:28would be I don't think I would be here if it wasn't for Genesis
- 2:54:33of the Daleks because it's my very first memory of Doctor Who
- 2:54:37and it's such a memory that was implant in burned on my my
- 2:54:42brain. The it was probably the repeat
- 2:54:47that I saw that was on. I love the fact that Mary White
- 2:54:52House when Genesis was first shown she complained about it
- 2:54:54being shown it half past five and then the following
- 2:54:57Christmas, the BBC show at 3:00 in the afternoon just to stick
- 2:55:02to fingers up at her. This, there's a reason why this
- 2:55:07is So popular and it is, it is, it is very, very good.
- 2:55:13I mean it is down to Terry Nation, I'm not nation's biggest
- 2:55:17fan. And you could point that this
- 2:55:20has been, you know, scripted by by Robert Holmes and he's sort
- 2:55:24of polished it off. But there are a lot of tropes in
- 2:55:27it that are of Nations work. But you've seen in Dolce stories
- 2:55:30before And we'll see in Blake 7. But it is really.
- 2:55:38Nation's finest hour. I don't know if it's his best
- 2:55:40script, I think it's best script is Dalek invasion of Earth but
- 2:55:44as the production everyone brings their A-game to this.
- 2:55:47Direct David Maloney and who we last Saw directing Planet of the
- 2:55:53Daleks. Now I love Planet, the Daleks
- 2:55:55but he's clearly. Maloney's, definitely realized
- 2:55:59this is this is going to be better than that.
- 2:56:01This is going to be not just for the kids.
- 2:56:03This needs to entertain the adults and He's really directing
- 2:56:09this to the hilt. There are He's, he's realized
- 2:56:13that you, you use the dial experimentally, you make sure
- 2:56:18you don't have a Dalek, that's staring straight in the screen.
- 2:56:21So while you're companion actresses trying to hide and
- 2:56:24it's clearly, it's just brilliant, isn't it?
- 2:56:27I mean, I can't, I, I was kind of dreading getting this because
- 2:56:31all I would do is just gush about it.
- 2:56:32Yes. There are there are bits that
- 2:56:36you could possibly edit out like the, like the clams.
- 2:56:39I mean, people do go on about this being over long.
- 2:56:43But I think I do wonder if those people.
- 2:56:46And it really annoys me when people say stories are overlong,
- 2:56:48but six passes. They're not meant to be watched
- 2:56:51all in one go. As it was originally made, it's
- 2:56:56right, it's it's made of six. 25 minute episodes so you watch one
- 2:57:00at a time and also you know what, if you watch all of them
- 2:57:03together that's only two and a half hours, you can watch this.
- 2:57:07In the same time it takes you to watch the latest the new Wicked
- 2:57:10movie. Certainly a lot, a lot easier, a
- 2:57:12lot shorter than some Lord of the Rings movies and goodness
- 2:57:16knows, what else, you could get two viewings of Genesis of the
- 2:57:21Daleks in the average length of a Strictly.
- 2:57:24Come hamster. you could yes maybe I should have said their
- 2:57:29internal not indomitable and at the beginning, I I there's too
- 2:57:35much, there's so much to say about this and I, it's, I always
- 2:57:40remember, I think it was, was it Vanessa, Bishop, who was the
- 2:57:42reviewer of Doctor Who magazine when they were doing the VHS is
- 2:57:45and she had to review revelation of The Darlings.
- 2:57:48And she said, you know, it's so much easier to review something
- 2:57:51that you really don't like or you can find fault with But
- 2:57:56there's a part from the clams. There is nothing that I can find
- 2:57:58for. With this, every one is playing,
- 2:58:01bringing their up game. The lighting on this is actually
- 2:58:04we've just commented about how this is a very brightly lit
- 2:58:07season. But those corridors in the, in
- 2:58:10the bunker, those metal saw shot with the with the, with the
- 2:58:14struts. So well designed and so well lit
- 2:58:17by Duncan Brown when they did the DVD.
- 2:58:23A feature, the making of feature, they brought him and
- 2:58:26interviewed him. And Those those scenes really
- 2:58:30work with those and I know we only see three dialects, but
- 2:58:33apart from the fact that my dad used to work with the guy who
- 2:58:36plays the felled prime minister or the foul politician.
- 2:58:38So that's my my claim to fame. Can I take on one point?
- 2:58:44You can you just said there because you said like a lot of
- 2:58:48praise for Terry Nation. Tearing to rather bulk of this.
- 2:58:53I'm sorry, the bad bones of this is Terry Nation.
- 2:58:56He wrote something for this and he wrote some of this, some of
- 2:58:59the Labour party but his last group was Planet of the
- 2:59:02Darlings, which is full of hackneyed cliche and suddenly
- 2:59:06he's right in sharp incisive, witty dialogue, like no way.
- 2:59:12It's no coincidence that Robert Holmes is scripted and this is
- 2:59:16exactly the same as revelation of the Daleks suddenly, Eric say
- 2:59:20was right in dialogue, like that.
- 2:59:21When Robert Holmes is basically made, I think, I think, There's
- 2:59:26no. Where else in Terrance?
- 2:59:27Terry Nation scripts where he rides as sharp as he does in
- 2:59:32this story. I think those big long speeches
- 2:59:34in five and six and all that, that's all rubber homes.
- 2:59:37That's him taking the plot that Nations giving him and he's
- 2:59:41giving it a huge polish. It's just too much of a
- 2:59:44coincidence. Otherwise now, what on Earth
- 2:59:47happened with the Android Invasion or here you are because
- 2:59:49that's also Robert home script entity.
- 2:59:51And yet that is full of cliche and hat, because I think maybe
- 2:59:54Robert Holmes went, we got an awful lot of praise for all that
- 2:59:57work. I did on Genesis as a darling's.
- 2:59:59So a bit like Moffat, with Nightmare and silver after the
- 3:00:02doctor's wife, he went I just let him write this script and
- 3:00:06then what he actually is, I don't know.
- 3:00:10I just I don't buy it. It's a great script, but I don't
- 3:00:13think it's nation's Okay. Should we go to the comments?
- 3:00:19Yeah, first Elliott. Something very bossy today.
- 3:00:25So no. No, you call being bossy, that's
- 3:00:29gonna say it's very, very good. Yes.
- 3:00:31So the first comment is from Oscar Groucho.
- 3:00:36Who says, one of Dr. Who's Finest Hours, a perfect,
- 3:00:39Confluence of style, and retooling, doctors.
- 3:00:42Whose greatest foe into a fascistic nightmare, this is the
- 3:00:45rise of the axis of the evil seen through genre lands.
- 3:00:50David Gillespie Pratt as a crap. Or so say some people who want
- 3:00:54to be controversial or as I call them boring, it's a classic for
- 3:00:59a reason, some of the finest performances in all Doctor Who
- 3:01:02and Tom Baker, here is never better Paul Smyth, this is such
- 3:01:08a special story. Michael worship May well be put
- 3:01:11in the best guest star performance.
- 3:01:12In all of who his davros is magnificent.
- 3:01:15It's Grim, horrific and terrifying.
- 3:01:17One of the true greats Matt Paddington.
- 3:01:21I literally can't think of anything more to say about
- 3:01:24Genesis. That hasn't been said a million
- 3:01:25times. I know the feeling perhaps a
- 3:01:28little long as all six parties are but otherwise it's just
- 3:01:32great down. Ross is such a perfect evil
- 3:01:35mastermind and nobody ever did it better.
- 3:01:40James Lark, as a Genesis is, obviously padded with more than
- 3:01:43a few Terry Nation cliches. And those of us who first
- 3:01:46experience it as a book or a cassette know that there's a
- 3:01:49better version. Even.
- 3:01:51So once again, it's a case of this production team taking
- 3:01:53something bit rather than making it sing the lesson here is that
- 3:01:57The Darlings book best in small doses in the shadows and
- 3:02:01explicitly as fascist symbols? They will never be this
- 3:02:04chilling. Again, it's exactly what happens
- 3:02:06in Revelation or not. Alex, isn't it?
- 3:02:08They are in the background. Yeah, Jason Thompson Genesis is
- 3:02:13Overexposed, but it's bloody Good, Michael Wisher and Mike,
- 3:02:17Peter miles Elevate, the whole thing.
- 3:02:18And for once Harry has written, as the hero, he is supposed to
- 3:02:21be and not the bumbling imbecile, who got his nose in a
- 3:02:25sliding, who caught his nose in a sliding door, in pumpy
- 3:02:28barracks. Paul Chrysler.
- 3:02:31Like my feelings on caves. My problem is that this is
- 3:02:34really great TV. But is it good Doctor Who?
- 3:02:37Well it does have Daleks the introduction to have Ross and
- 3:02:40some typical Nations silliness. So I do think despite its Grim
- 3:02:43tone we never know what just because he'll yeah yeah and I
- 3:02:51was excited to see this when it was repeated in 1982.
- 3:02:56Get me a big big. Give me an orange.
- 3:03:01Give me a Michael. Bless you, Barry.
- 3:03:08Let's for challenging Terry Nation to do something different
- 3:03:10with the Dalek story. Two, great tastes.
- 3:03:13Let's and dicks versus homes in hedgecliff of who's
- 3:03:16sensibilities, that taste great together and iconic story with
- 3:03:20everyone at the top of their game.
- 3:03:22That's all we did, right? It's so, let's fix hard to work
- 3:03:25on every story together, and they like this.
- 3:03:28Good. Anthony Carroll says, maybe the
- 3:03:32best who Davos is so good and cunning a neither is a great
- 3:03:36henchmen, just wish to class were better Nine out of 10.
- 3:03:40I never give 10 out of 10, how I just wish class were better.
- 3:03:44Yeah, I mean the clams does. He mean the clams?
- 3:03:48Maybe it's on this print, maybe. Or maybe he just really, really
- 3:03:52hates class and needed to get completely unrelated nothing to
- 3:03:59do with this bar. Just James H B.
- 3:04:06Oh here we go. Nonsensical overly padded poorly
- 3:04:10written and horrendous in that. The doctor seems to think that
- 3:04:12rewriting the whole universe is sensible.
- 3:04:15This story that this story shows that Nation originally reroute
- 3:04:19his standard Doctor Who story is because he couldn't actually
- 3:04:22write any others been and burn. But it is an enormous fan of the
- 3:04:27new adventures, right? Where the doctor most of all in
- 3:04:31things. Yeah, on a regular basis.
- 3:04:33How we can possibly write those and dismissed this anyway.
- 3:04:37So okay. Michael storm says Wisher, /
- 3:04:42miles are fantastic, but I can't help wandering.
- 3:04:45If it would have been better to leave davros dead at the end of
- 3:04:47this cereal highlight of the Season.
- 3:04:49Keep Tim Carter. Last something different for the
- 3:04:53Daleks, a brilliant story with all of the cars bringing their a
- 3:04:57games. Michael wishes performance from
- 3:04:58Icy menace to ranting megalomania has never been
- 3:05:01bettered. Surely one of the best cities
- 3:05:03best performances in who and Harry pulls a lonely clam.
- 3:05:07Keep Peter old says, Peter miles is the star here and the whole
- 3:05:12thing is beautiful realized and executed it's between this and
- 3:05:15art the winner about my sister that.
- 3:05:20Yeah, he says to me that thank you.
- 3:05:21That's what I wanted to know. That's what I wanted to know.
- 3:05:28Travelers are telling me don't have any different usually, so
- 3:05:31he's gonna find out now, isn't he listened to this?
- 3:05:39Why are you talking about? It was listening up.
- 3:05:42So I know that is my wife, Paul, Dan, it's all been said before,
- 3:05:47hasn't it not a death performance in it?
- 3:05:49Wishes to Davos is Pitch. Perfect, Peter miles is suitably
- 3:05:52Sinister. The three regulars, shine
- 3:05:55Maloney's direction is as ever is.
- 3:05:58Magnificent only Duff thing in it is the clam Luke Sims
- 3:06:03Jenkins, says two episodes too long, but it's easily the best.
- 3:06:07Dalek story of the 70s, the clan could go into bin.
- 3:06:10Keep the rest. John Arnold Genesis is a
- 3:06:13terrific production. The imagery of the opening
- 3:06:15shots, sells it straight away. And Dave, Michael wishes davros
- 3:06:19is worth every single of the praise heaped on it down, the
- 3:06:22ears just a shame. It's all trying to polish a
- 3:06:25script ropey even by Terry Nation standards.
- 3:06:27John Darren lit. Roundels says a strong script
- 3:06:33with dedicated production but it will never be a favor as I don't
- 3:06:36do. Grim Doctor Who Matt Floyd house
- 3:06:39and out classic. The performance is a electric,
- 3:06:41the premise ingenious. Well done Barry and Uncle
- 3:06:44Terrence for making Nations. Don't do something new and Well
- 3:06:48Done homes for free for crafting the dialogue and characters
- 3:06:50compared the one-dimensional rancher in Destiny to the
- 3:06:54nuanced character here. Glenn Fitzgerald.
- 3:06:57Ding dong. Glimp Fitzgerald says, as much
- 3:07:00as I love it, I think this is an episode or two too long, but
- 3:07:04neither is a great character and the instructor of davros always
- 3:07:07makes it worth a watch, but I do feel that drags a bit and might
- 3:07:10have been more exciting if it was for episodes.
- 3:07:12In my opinion. All Quinn.
- 3:07:14All this is bit of controversial, the second most
- 3:07:16overrated story of the 70s after the demons three or four
- 3:07:21incredible scenes. Yes, I know, Joe trapped in six
- 3:07:24and tedious episodes people by mostly Anonymous characters
- 3:07:29allowing Davison to dominate, which is appropriate in sets
- 3:07:32that are either shiny or beige. Perfect Davos is voice Unlike
- 3:07:38the shiny sets, I think they're very good.
- 3:07:40And the beige ones, you know, there are only on for one, one
- 3:07:44story, one episode. So, there we go.
- 3:07:46So, who would like to go next? Okay?
- 3:07:51One of my favorite films is downfall.
- 3:07:54You probably all, you know, it's German film about the last days
- 3:07:59of Hitler in the bunker. Totally.
- 3:08:02It's the one I make the means out of you know every time it's
- 3:08:05a parody videos where you have them you know they you know
- 3:08:08Hitler was heard that, you know, so-and-so has done this and that
- 3:08:12renting it It's so this is basically Hitler's last days in
- 3:08:19the bunker. You know, we've got the Nazis,
- 3:08:21you go, you skip the in that basically, what you've got left
- 3:08:25of the Fanatics and the children, which is what you see
- 3:08:28in this, you know, you've got the children when they're not,
- 3:08:30you know, the younger people there, the Fanatics, the people
- 3:08:34are too cowardly to stand up to Hitler, which basically what
- 3:08:38that was is, that's what I love it.
- 3:08:40I love a lovely. The atmosphere opening ladies
- 3:08:43incredible, you can see why Steven Moffat nicked it for just
- 3:08:48a princess because I forgot about that.
- 3:08:55Oh, gosh. Now it's now I know.
- 3:08:57I never remembered it is inspired that.
- 3:08:59Can I have been it, please? Because I hate The Magicians.
- 3:09:02Apprentice in the witches from earlier.
- 3:09:04Oh Dreadful, sorry, surprised to know that I both loved.
- 3:09:10I mean, the conclusion, Moffat came to, he wasn't diversity
- 3:09:13that dragged out of his chair and left flailing about on the
- 3:09:16floor, okay? When his eyes opened as well?
- 3:09:19Yeah. So sorry.
- 3:09:23Sorry. You know what, you know, he's
- 3:09:26like. So what can you say about this
- 3:09:28as a being said, you know, but I know you.
- 3:09:31I think it's a bit long because I think you know, I think this
- 3:09:34could have been a nice You know I think it shows it was a bit
- 3:09:37longer the fact that money to you know the reduced it to an LP
- 3:09:41and it's still works. You think sometimes?
- 3:09:44Then again you know it's it's what it is you know, I think
- 3:09:47we've seen it now. We see the evidence or what
- 3:09:50happens when they chop things down and you know be careful
- 3:09:54what you wish for all sorts of saying neither is brilliant.
- 3:09:57I think he's, I think Peter miles is great in all his roles.
- 3:10:00Maybe not so much in, you know, I think he's, you know, this is
- 3:10:03really, this is just like evil Nazi personified, you know,
- 3:10:06she's incredible performance. I don't really like that for us.
- 3:10:11I think he I just think he introducing him to me, I think
- 3:10:17to me, she's the goal is I can understand when they go in there
- 3:10:20because, you know, he's like, who invented these crazy things.
- 3:10:23But I just think if it was one and done, I think he should.
- 3:10:26I go over some of the comments. I think he shouldn't have come
- 3:10:29back as much as I like some of the stories in here.
- 3:10:32I'm in two ways about him. So, um, I think no one's been.
- 3:10:38I think Steven yardley's great in this so forth.
- 3:10:40I think he's really good. I mean, seems to mention him,
- 3:10:43you know, he's a bit of a bit of a clue, so he's like the noble
- 3:10:46savage, but I think he's really good.
- 3:10:49I think, you know, he's an excellent.
- 3:10:50You know, I think he's really good.
- 3:10:52He's like an interesting character, you know, and I think
- 3:10:54you'll like it. I like his relationship with
- 3:10:56Sarah. It's like, you know, she's all,
- 3:10:58you know they have a really good nice relationship again they
- 3:11:02can't the one thing you know we could do a little things.
- 3:11:05Just like how come they you know how big a big war it's been on
- 3:11:08for thousands of years and the cities are about two minutes
- 3:11:11away. Walk away from each other.
- 3:11:12Do you have got a lot less heavy Nation for your shows in a, you
- 3:11:18know, you know, could play Heavy Nation.
- 3:11:19Bingo, all this radio station is but like It's a formula, you
- 3:11:24know? Making lots of money.
- 3:11:26There's one woman in it. And she doesn't turn up to
- 3:11:31episode four and a bit worried that all the cells have been
- 3:11:34destroyed in the city, Paul better ends going to be doing a
- 3:11:37hell of a lot of love and her Village.
- 3:11:43So we got over that as well. Why the time Lords in
- 3:11:46interfering like oh, and let's just, I know I understand why is
- 3:11:51because to get them in the first place but that's one thing that
- 3:11:54noise me about this, you know, they hope the whole thing about
- 3:11:57us because the time was going to interfere, We're not gonna win,
- 3:12:01it's only based on interfering again, which bugs me but Well,
- 3:12:07that's why he calls them a bunch of Hypocrites all the time.
- 3:12:09I know exactly. And you know technically I mean
- 3:12:13I've seen it said a load of times that this is like the
- 3:12:15first step, the first baby step of the time War, isn't it?
- 3:12:20Because if I was the Daleks I would be a little bit pissed as
- 3:12:23well. Only doing they were, you know,
- 3:12:26he's already doing what they want to survive, you know, but
- 3:12:29that's the year again. That's sort of the argument that
- 3:12:31all these perfect sort of, you know, bad thing we're going, you
- 3:12:35know that Is this whole white genocide thing that Elon Musk
- 3:12:39presents it going. Well, we have to protect, you
- 3:12:41know, the whites are being destroyed in South Africa.
- 3:12:44We got to protect our own, which is a myth and it's obvious of,
- 3:12:47but they do that. You know, it's the all extreme
- 3:12:50is through this. So well, we're only doing it
- 3:12:52took, you know, it's a whole Nazi philosophy.
- 3:12:54You know, we're trying but only trying to survive, you were
- 3:12:57attacked us first. We're only trying to survive,
- 3:12:59you know, even if we're doing it for your own good.
- 3:13:02Exactly. You know, nothing changes.
- 3:13:05So that's why she was saying earlier, you know, the whole,
- 3:13:08you know, it costs a long shot and it's still going to come
- 3:13:13back and it's a bit worrying. But surely, this is the most
- 3:13:15second world war Doctor Who story ever like impossibility
- 3:13:19because of it's because of that Force, you know, he's obviously
- 3:13:23Hitler about so, You know, you even got Peter miles wearing his
- 3:13:29eye and cross which is but worrying, the fact that Ipsy is
- 3:13:32personal lion cross, but with you know, on the behind the
- 3:13:36surface, well our Dipper specifically say to them don't
- 3:13:41don't try and make them look too, like the Nazis.
- 3:13:44And then he saw the rushes coming nearly where it was too
- 3:13:47late now and it You know Peter Mars comes in when he's him like
- 3:13:51glasses you think? Oh then never mind.
- 3:13:53But yeah this is this is the big this is so he's basically This
- 3:13:58is this is the last. You know, this is Hitler's.
- 3:14:01Last stand in the Surrounding himself with, you know, that,
- 3:14:06you know, the fanatic, the children and the people are too
- 3:14:10scared to one away. And they used this politicians
- 3:14:14and the, you know, it's even like, you can even say it's like
- 3:14:17the belt, you know, you've got. You've got Valkyrie cool going
- 3:14:20on. When they would decide to like,
- 3:14:21you know, we're going to satisfy me stand up to him and me out
- 3:14:25with his sister. Okay, sure.
- 3:14:26So, this is the most, you know, Obvious that.
- 3:14:31Um, I'm going to put it through because I don't people think you
- 3:14:36can. It's one of those ones.
- 3:14:41It's like, I had more fun watching the Cyber and I did
- 3:14:44this, but this is not supposed to be fun.
- 3:14:45This is not be fun. This is not fun, you know, you
- 3:14:50know, we can say, you know, you can find cute bear.
- 3:14:52You can find humor in most in nearly every situation you have
- 3:14:55to even if it's a very bright fume, when you go you can say
- 3:14:58well you've got Tom been strangled by tentacles, she's
- 3:15:03absolutely, you know, there's some, you know, there's some
- 3:15:05bits like that. This is not fun.
- 3:15:07This is not fun Doctor Who As you would put this down and go
- 3:15:11on and cheering. I don't know what that looks
- 3:15:14like. You know, if that cheers you up.
- 3:15:16Well, Only Anthony Carroll. Okay, so that's all the death
- 3:15:23penalty this But I'm gonna put it through.
- 3:15:29And it's got another tiny train which Delights me as well as
- 3:15:40well. It's one of those and we're just
- 3:15:42SATs and gold on him. No, no.
- 3:15:45Yeah, it's going for it. Okay, who would like to go next.
- 3:15:48So I'll go next. Okay.
- 3:15:51I will say something original about Genesis of the Daleks, or
- 3:15:55at least I've never heard it before.
- 3:15:56I'm allergic to Crustaceans. So, those enormous clams that
- 3:16:01attack people. That is the most terrifying
- 3:16:03monster in Doctor Who ever for me, all right.
- 3:16:06That's what they give. You a terrible swelling.
- 3:16:09I don't know. But Jesus Christ, just the
- 3:16:12thought of enormous clams coming after me because I sorry joints
- 3:16:18were definitely a thing in cartoons in the possibly in the
- 3:16:2370s that I was watching on repeats.
- 3:16:25But any any thing where somebody one of the characters goes
- 3:16:32diving Get it caught in a giant clam was definitely a thing
- 3:16:36underwater. Yes, not above, great job and I
- 3:16:39oysters as well because usually find a massive great Pearl in
- 3:16:42them and you carry nation's been reading those comics and but
- 3:16:46yeah, so that's the clams. There are this silly but no less
- 3:16:52silly than, you know, enormous instincts, giant robots and big
- 3:16:57Camp flouncy Cybermen, you know, less silly than anything else
- 3:17:02this season while some are experiment is Brutal.
- 3:17:09I think the real sort of brutalist Philippines here.
- 3:17:13Well that opening scene in slow motion of people being gunned
- 3:17:18down. I mean, it's really strong
- 3:17:21stuff. I'll be the first person to say
- 3:17:23there are times in Moffitt's era where Should you put a kid down
- 3:17:27in front of that? I think there's a few moments
- 3:17:29here as well. The scene where Sarah's at the
- 3:17:32top of the rocket and the man kicks are over and suggests.
- 3:17:36It's going to let her go. I mean, that is so adult that's
- 3:17:39a scene I think. Maybe we are going a bit too
- 3:17:43far. Maybe marry White House has a
- 3:17:45point. Good grief.
- 3:17:47You know, there's gun battles. This little beating
- 3:17:50strangulation electrician psychological torture.
- 3:17:54It's really strong stuff. Fucking love it.
- 3:17:59But I was like a kid. I loved it like I adored it but
- 3:18:02yeah, it is a lot. I loved afros.
- 3:18:08Of course I do davros, like, it's the definitive diverse, and
- 3:18:11he's a definitive character because we never forgot him.
- 3:18:14Did we? Like there are many characters
- 3:18:17that were like one short characters that come in, don't
- 3:18:20make an impact and we forget about, we never had, you know,
- 3:18:22the Run of Zaroff stories. Did we even know?
- 3:18:25I know Lucy. We love professors are off and
- 3:18:28he is fabulous, but we won't crying out for those who were we
- 3:18:32but no, Dave Ross is, it's an incredible.
- 3:18:35Incredible thing, Michael Wisher.
- 3:18:38Is it the best ever? I love Molloy in Revelation of
- 3:18:42the Daleks and he gives some brilliant performers over at Big
- 3:18:45finish as well. And Julian bleach doesn't quite
- 3:18:49get the material where she gets here but he is good but wish him
- 3:18:53out. He's so involved in the role
- 3:18:55that in the rehearsals. He stuck a paper bag over his
- 3:18:58head with a pair of eyes and said, oh no, just a paper bag.
- 3:19:01Over his head. Poor Philippines for Robert
- 3:19:04Holmes. Probably had to leave the
- 3:19:05rehearsal hall because the wishes they are playing the role
- 3:19:08with a bag over his head. I mean he's just in that room,
- 3:19:11isn't he? And the bit, I love all the
- 3:19:14ranting scenes are great, you know that I love.
- 3:19:20But the scene where in I think it's five or six.
- 3:19:24It's later in the story and it's complete silence.
- 3:19:28The camera swings around, and defrost is sitting there in the
- 3:19:31dark and you can hear gunfire rattling in the distance and
- 3:19:34he's just tapping his finger on his wheelchair.
- 3:19:38And it's it's a side of a village.
- 3:19:40You just don't get to see being 4 for manipulative and he's just
- 3:19:44wonderful. He's so great and then you team
- 3:19:47him up with Peter's nighter. It's it's the definitive
- 3:19:52henchmen and villain. I think A another reason I love
- 3:19:57this, I think Maloney pushes the production as far as you
- 3:20:00possibly can. He sells that absurd sequence of
- 3:20:05them climbing up to the top of the rocket and shooting that all
- 3:20:09on film. Having them going up the same
- 3:20:11bit of scaffolding, again and again, but from different
- 3:20:13angles, the way it's lit. So beautifully the way when
- 3:20:17they're at the top and they look down the whole thing.
- 3:20:20It convinces me, as a kid, I was absolutely convinced as to what
- 3:20:23was happening, but the action is great as well.
- 3:20:26And then when we go down into the bunker for five and six, It
- 3:20:31does feel very claustrophobic doesn't it feels like just the
- 3:20:35whole situation is closing in on everybody and who the fuck's
- 3:20:39gonna be Left Alive because people lost still die.
- 3:20:42And when they start arguing amongst themselves and down
- 3:20:45Frost, and literally is a trial to show who's on his side and
- 3:20:51who's not. And then murdered everybody
- 3:20:53else. There's a powerful sense of
- 3:20:56claustrophobia and those last two episodes.
- 3:20:59I just think is nevertheless. I'm like Joe though.
- 3:21:03I would never put this on. I never put this on, actually.
- 3:21:05I can't think the last time I watched Genesis before doing it
- 3:21:08for this because you know you don't come home with the end
- 3:21:12today. Go off we want to watch Mass
- 3:21:13murdered tonight that'll be jolly.
- 3:21:15I really want to see Sarah, Jane tortured horribly.
- 3:21:18And But hey, it's amazing Telly. It's great.
- 3:21:22It's not just great Doctor Who is great television.
- 3:21:24So yeah, please please. Can we put this through?
- 3:21:27Just for every reason you guys said for everything, everyone
- 3:21:30said in the comments for every heaping of, Praise everyone,
- 3:21:34that's ever given Genesis to the Daleks it deserves.
- 3:21:38It, it's fantastic. It's iconic, and people overuse
- 3:21:42that word, but this is genuinely iconic.
- 3:21:44Elliot, would you like to Tell us.
- 3:21:48Are you going to pin it? Or you going to be?
- 3:21:52Well, I yeah I have I have talked previously about I would
- 3:21:56say reputation, you know the the stories the fandom that people
- 3:22:02talk about is the good ones. Thought the best that ever did
- 3:22:05it the ones that you usually bit darker because we're all ashamed
- 3:22:08of having fun but this is still incredible.
- 3:22:12Absolutely incredible. And I think the reason that this
- 3:22:15is so good is because it's the exception, not the rule, you
- 3:22:18couldn't do this. Every time we had a dollar
- 3:22:20store, you can do one of these every season.
- 3:22:23But having it as essentially, a one-off in in the grimness of
- 3:22:27the story, really? Really It makes it something
- 3:22:30memorable and and special, I think it's definitely.
- 3:22:36Okay if we're being generous and saying that it is Jerry Nations
- 3:22:39script is the best thing that he's produced for the show in my
- 3:22:44opinion. Since the chase, it's the most
- 3:22:51the two completely different tones, but it's the most
- 3:22:53original bit of Terry Nation writing since the chase is,
- 3:22:59Something that I I've definitely gone back and forth on we
- 3:23:02reviewed it. Not so long ago for come along
- 3:23:07Ponder, the podcast that I do and I was really worried about
- 3:23:09going. Back to it.
- 3:23:11But I did really, really enjoy the enjoy watching it.
- 3:23:20And same thing as kind of worried about going back to this
- 3:23:22time and I think because I watched it so close to the last
- 3:23:25time I watched it I don't think I I loved it as much as I did
- 3:23:29buy. I think that's because you know
- 3:23:30if it doesn't sound too granddaughter story like it's
- 3:23:33something that kind of I think needs to be appreciated.
- 3:23:35So it's a, it's a fight. It's a fine wine.
- 3:23:38You've got a sip. It occasionally not not just
- 3:23:40glad it down like a, like the squash that I had in this glass
- 3:23:44over here. But no, everyone everyone's
- 3:23:48firing on all cylinders. I mean, I agree that davros I
- 3:23:52don't think should ever really have been been bought back.
- 3:23:55The he does so. So well here and I think later
- 3:23:59on it does on the bind, the idea of the of the Daleks but I think
- 3:24:02in this the story it's perfectly good series.
- 3:24:05See the creator of Michael Wisher is incredible but overall
- 3:24:10I think it's just It just looks beautiful.
- 3:24:13I know we talked about this, the opening scene in the Quarry and
- 3:24:17I do, I do think that looks amazing for me.
- 3:24:20The the trench set is is the real impressive bit of work.
- 3:24:28Just because I don't know. I love how I love how atmosphere
- 3:24:31it that looks and they get really creative with it later on
- 3:24:34my favorite. One of my favorite shots in all
- 3:24:36of Doctor Who is that low angle of the darling in must be.
- 3:24:40Is it four or five? Isn't it with colors with the
- 3:24:42yeah purple and blues and pinks like for the for the sky and
- 3:24:46it's just incredible making that conscious effort to shoot the
- 3:24:49dark. Some relying to make them look,
- 3:24:50intimidating is just such a such a good choice that I can't
- 3:24:57believe it. And I would be remiss.
- 3:25:00There's lots of good lines. I'd be remiss, just because
- 3:25:03mentioning my little pocket, so I didn't mention that.
- 3:25:05The moment that we enjoyed most is when Dave Ross and the doctor
- 3:25:10have a little wrestle. And the doctor grabs Dave, Ross
- 3:25:13his arm and he kind of sits in silence for about two seconds,
- 3:25:16and then just goes Release Me. For the understatement.
- 3:25:23You gotta, you gotta find some lightness in.
- 3:25:25Yeah, in the darkness but no, I, I think so.
- 3:25:28It worked it works perfectly because it's the exception, not
- 3:25:31the rule, you can do this all the time, but it definitely has
- 3:25:36a reputation that's worthy of itself.
- 3:25:39So no, I I love Genesis the darks and I'm going to keep it
- 3:25:42great. So it's a Chase.
- 3:25:44I mean you can barely tell the difference between the two.
- 3:25:46Can you Polar Opposites? But yeah, it's definitely.
- 3:25:50Yeah, but two of the best doll stories of all time.
- 3:25:52Oh, can you imagine Genesis by Richard?
- 3:25:57oh, the dog. Oh yeah, like it's a bit of the
- 3:26:10bunker with us where Frankenstein and drag.
- 3:26:11I was I yeah, I'd love it. Imagine at the end you could
- 3:26:15just go there. Oh, did oh, Lucy, can you give
- 3:26:24us your your view, please? Firstly, Justice for clams.
- 3:26:27As I just said, yeah, I do find the idea of giant times.
- 3:26:33Unnerving. And I, I think it's probably the
- 3:26:36clams are once again, a victim of this sort of The two poles of
- 3:26:42Doctor Who fandom is the people who carry the residual,
- 3:26:47embarrassment or people seeing Doctor Who and going, oh, that's
- 3:26:51a bit rubbish and wanting it to be serious.
- 3:26:54And you know, this is what Dr. Who should be about it should be
- 3:26:57about serious things and people with guns and shooting and
- 3:27:00killing and and grimness and there's a giant clam.
- 3:27:04Why is this giant clam in my? Because it's Doctor Who and
- 3:27:07there are things that I like about it a lot.
- 3:27:12I like that. We get to see who Harry really
- 3:27:14is underneath the, the sort of the banter and the silly Nest.
- 3:27:19We get to picture of him as quite convincing in that he is,
- 3:27:24you know, lighthearted and jolly Bart.
- 3:27:27He is also capable of being absolutely cool Under Pressure.
- 3:27:31He saved the doctor from my mind, whether that's how mine's
- 3:27:35actually work. Like, I don't know but it's how
- 3:27:37they work on the Telly. So that's right sequence.
- 3:27:39So there is Burning Secrets. Yeah, but, you know, he's Brave.
- 3:27:45He just step back home and goes, no, not stepping back.
- 3:27:49That's his job. This is something suddenly we
- 3:27:51get to see Harry doing actually doing his job, which is to be a
- 3:27:56member of the Armed Forces and to be calm under pressure.
- 3:27:58And we also have that later on where the doctor is going to
- 3:28:03potentially lay the charges at the door of the quote, unquote
- 3:28:07nursery. And how are you just very
- 3:28:09calmly? Setting a fuse while talking
- 3:28:13here. It's just like he knows how to
- 3:28:25do this, he's done this 100 times, he's paying attention to
- 3:28:28it but he can talk to her at the same time and also the part
- 3:28:30where he says to the doctor the doctor actually the roles are
- 3:28:34kind of reverse because the doctor's going but the time ring
- 3:28:37it's important how he said. Yeah.
- 3:28:38But we don't want them to know that, do we?
- 3:28:42And and kind of turns that on its head and he gets a little
- 3:28:46bit of action, too. I like that, I really like
- 3:28:48silver and it shows. So I think he's very good, very
- 3:28:51engaging character. You do get the whole And again,
- 3:28:56because we've looked back at things with a sort of, more
- 3:28:58modern, I I'm going to do the same with this.
- 3:29:01We get the uncomfortable thing of all, the mutants are terrible
- 3:29:04and horrific. Oh no, but actually he's quite
- 3:29:06good-looking, that's a bit. I mean, it would have been
- 3:29:09perhaps a slightly better way of putting it to have a mutant who
- 3:29:13looked visibly different to humanoids, and then have them be
- 3:29:17a decent person as well. Maybe, I don't know.
- 3:29:20There's the question of Javis is, I mean I I found avros um
- 3:29:26very frightening, but my dad Ross was obviously Terry Malloy
- 3:29:30and I found him very frightening partly because of the way he
- 3:29:33looked which is very old. We don't know despite comic
- 3:29:40relief records, we still don't know what daffodils were the
- 3:29:43Devils had always looked. Like that with the the he's he's
- 3:29:50circumstances are a result of his experimentation.
- 3:29:55Or radiation poisoning or whatever.
- 3:29:58So you get this kind of and I know it matters to some people,
- 3:30:03it matters in a different way to other people. but there is the
- 3:30:07question of Whether the his lack of Mobility is a kind of whether
- 3:30:14he earned that from his experiments.
- 3:30:17And so, you know, the scientists who plays God ends up, Which is
- 3:30:21not a comfortable thing to think about these days.
- 3:30:23And it's been addressed, RTD, tried to address it possibly a
- 3:30:27bit clumsily and that brought out a whole other side of
- 3:30:29Bangor. Um, yeah.
- 3:30:32I also think that probably because I didn't watch this when
- 3:30:35I was a child, I can imagine that watching this as a younger
- 3:30:40person. You would think it would be
- 3:30:43inclined to think if he was special, if you were serious,
- 3:30:45want this to be serious, you know?
- 3:30:46Oh wow. They're doing Nazis, it's
- 3:30:48brilliant. It's really serious.
- 3:30:50I watch it and go flip in it. That's a bit on the nose, isn't
- 3:30:52it? It's, I know it's designed for
- 3:30:56young people, but the uniforms are just too much for me now,
- 3:31:03but then I'm not the intended audience.
- 3:31:06I'm at all. So, what's lovely lift?
- 3:31:09Tenant group are doing their torturing people and enjoying it
- 3:31:13because that was the first time I saw, it's dead.
- 3:31:16Oh, And I should have just got off in my little tank.
- 3:31:24Also, do you know, the guy who's who, who hangs Sarah top of the
- 3:31:28rocket is General Van Cleef and his name?
- 3:31:31Yes. So different is there.
- 3:31:33You never could? Yeah, really know.
- 3:31:35He also plays Marathon Planet Of The Darlings.
- 3:31:38They could actually, yes, they would be different.
- 3:31:40There is a slightly more And yes, he is in Warfare terrible.
- 3:31:54Things are done by either side, but the other side in this case,
- 3:31:58all are supposedly not seed. Stroke, Daleks So it's kind of
- 3:32:04you know, I mean it I don't know I don't know where I'm going
- 3:32:07with this. Really.
- 3:32:07I am gonna keep it because I like Daleks, I like what it
- 3:32:11does. I like what he does with Harry's
- 3:32:12character. Particularly I don't feel that
- 3:32:15all those Sierra does have some good stuff with severing.
- 3:32:17I don't feel like she's kind of unique as much.
- 3:32:20I like better and a lot. I also I I imagine that there
- 3:32:24were other sort of little patrols of told about souls
- 3:32:27about the place that might, perhaps have all women in the
- 3:32:30movie led by women. So yeah, relationship that she
- 3:32:35builds with severing as well because she's suspicious on him
- 3:32:38too, to start with. Yeah, Peter miles, I don't know.
- 3:32:45It's it's again that kind of for me, he's he's depiction of Noida
- 3:32:51tips. It over into slightly overcooked
- 3:32:53territory. When some of the others aren't
- 3:32:56quite. So, and that I know, that's just
- 3:32:58how Peter miles acts now because I've seen him in other things,
- 3:33:00doing effectively a similar persona but the first time I
- 3:33:05watched it, I thought. Oh, That's, that's taking a
- 3:33:08little over to there. Are some Kind of philosophical
- 3:33:12arguments. The doctor says, if you could,
- 3:33:14if you had a thing that you could just draw the whole of the
- 3:33:16universe with, would you do it? And he goes, oh yeah, of course,
- 3:33:19because I'm a megalomaniac. Oh, and then that way the doctor
- 3:33:23knows that he's completely nuts and, and he's definitely a
- 3:33:27wrong. And then the doctor can't decide
- 3:33:30whether or not to do in the Daleks and he decides he's going
- 3:33:32to and then it gets taken out of his hands and done anyway.
- 3:33:35So really it doesn't matter and I do find the whole time Ring
- 3:33:40Thing a bit. It's kind of it's it's sleeping
- 3:33:43over a little bit into magic like the time lord appearing.
- 3:33:48Apparently out of nowhere in a bowl of hat and Overcoat or
- 3:33:51standing in media. Doesn't he appear in mid-air in
- 3:33:54one story? Is it this one or another one
- 3:33:56there? And that's, I mean, I like
- 3:34:01magic. And I like science fiction.
- 3:34:04If there's going to be magic in science fiction, I like it to
- 3:34:09have a sort of Science Fiction. He bobbins explanation.
- 3:34:12Rather knows me. I'm sorry.
- 3:34:14Sorry. Annoys me about that is not a
- 3:34:19ring. It's a bracelet.
- 3:34:20I so I'm so potentially about that.
- 3:34:25I just thinking going to ring. It's a bracelet.
- 3:34:28I know a time bracelet. Hasn't got the same ring to it.
- 3:34:33Every nation looks at then goes all.
- 3:34:36That's a good idea. A bracelet that can transfer
- 3:34:38transfer teleport people from one place to be about the demons
- 3:34:46is that is definitely not a sacrificial tabard.
- 3:34:49It's a dress or a gown. A tap odd has open side and fits
- 3:34:53over the head. And you see, they do have an
- 3:34:57explanation for the Magic in the demons.
- 3:34:59Exactly a rational. I don't mind, I don't mind.
- 3:35:03I read stories with magic in and I restore.
- 3:35:05But when the two mesh together, I kind of, because of the way,
- 3:35:08my mom works. I kind of like to keep them in
- 3:35:10separate boxes. So the time lord appearing out
- 3:35:12of nowhere. Feels like magic.
- 3:35:14The time ring stroke bracelet Feels like magic.
- 3:35:18So I don't know, but yeah, I'm gonna put it through anyway
- 3:35:20after just bubbling on know. So I mean I'd like, verbal away,
- 3:35:25what you said there about you sort of you know, it takes Takes
- 3:35:29your thoughts to sort of uncomfortable places thinking
- 3:35:31about the substance of the story.
- 3:35:34But there's not that many doctors stories that are this
- 3:35:38layered and can provide such, you know, provoking Force as
- 3:35:43well. So it's doing something
- 3:35:45interesting. It's depends sort of where you
- 3:35:47fall on either side of the arguments that are taking place.
- 3:35:51Yeah. And I'm almost not sure how much
- 3:35:53it meant to because there is a waist, the question if intention
- 3:35:58behind it. And I'm sure the intention of
- 3:36:00davros was no more than He will be he'd he'd dearly quote
- 3:36:06unquote, ugly. This will possibly be to an
- 3:36:09experiment. He did will leave it up to the
- 3:36:11viewer. The mutants will be not mutants,
- 3:36:14they'll actually be decent looking people and that will
- 3:36:16surprise the audience. So it's not I'm putting a view.
- 3:36:19I'm putting a more modern view on to it which we can't help but
- 3:36:22do now, right? He wasn't there in the first
- 3:36:25place. So I'm not sort of taking it on
- 3:36:26its own terms and Michael wishes performance is really very good,
- 3:36:30of course, and very new ones for for somebody who could not had
- 3:36:34no movement in his character and very little expression in his
- 3:36:38face and I can completely understand the paper bag thing.
- 3:36:40Because that's it easy projecting from inside of
- 3:36:43paperback. But I did I saw Terry Molloy at
- 3:36:48another event and he was talking about the mosque and he said,
- 3:36:51when When he was doing it and presumably Michael where she was
- 3:36:56doing it, it was sort of set in one so you pulled it on over
- 3:36:59your head. It was complete.
- 3:37:01Not like these days where they would layer on.
- 3:37:04Plastic onto your face. So he said, because it was
- 3:37:08molded on his face. It actually wasn't that
- 3:37:11uncomfortable to wear, but the funniest thing was that somebody
- 3:37:15said oh what was it like with the mask and he went?
- 3:37:16Oh well of course this is the mask.
- 3:37:18You know, you said the mallard a frost really scared you?
- 3:37:23Yeah, he really scared me too but for different reasons, he
- 3:37:26really looks like my nanny Steptoe.
- 3:37:28The frost just imagine. Like I saw a purple rinse on the
- 3:37:32top. For my man look like we're up,
- 3:37:35sorry. Okay.
- 3:37:37Well, well on that note and Genesis possibly unsurprisingly
- 3:37:42goes into the final round but we're still.
- 3:37:45So we got some Moments of, you know, it wasn't all conquering
- 3:37:51argument saying it wasn't. No, no, I think that's quite
- 3:37:54yeah, definitely a quite a not contentious, but yeah,
- 3:38:00definitely, definitely willing to think about So we got three
- 3:38:04stories for our final round Arcane space.
- 3:38:08Genesis of the Daleks and robot. Now, I've never done this random
- 3:38:12generator thing before. I was so tempted, just to write
- 3:38:16it. Write the names down on three,
- 3:38:17four, five. I have that version.
- 3:38:19Oh, is it yeah Frozen. Yeah.
- 3:38:21Oh okay. So Joe if you got your camp
- 3:38:25music ah cup music a go, so, so to begin the first round of
- 3:38:33round two, we have Arcane space. Versus.
- 3:38:49Genesis of the Daleks. Joe.
- 3:38:55Without me. Talking space.
- 3:38:59Okay. Joe with an e.
- 3:39:05Oh, okay, spice. Elliot.
- 3:39:11I want to be I want to be different, but I I'm Ark in
- 3:39:15space. You see?
- 3:39:22Despite all I've just said I'm actually gonna say Genesis at
- 3:39:25all. It's because I think it's more
- 3:39:27fully formed as the story and there are there's more
- 3:39:35characters to engage with whether you like them or not,
- 3:39:38there's more sense of yeah, the arc is cluster phobic. but with
- 3:39:45Genesis, you get that but you also get a sense of a kind of
- 3:39:50society that you don't really get with all.
- 3:39:52So I I'm gonna say Genesis just sort of reflects I would have
- 3:39:58said Genesis. So, It wasn't too, but yeah, I
- 3:40:01would have either one of those. So Genesis gets the bronze to
- 3:40:07see your Series in 20. Space versus robots.
- 3:40:14Let's go and reverse order this time.
- 3:40:20Lucy, what would you go for? I, I do, like, I do like robot,
- 3:40:26I largely because I like the robot.
- 3:40:28I'm going to say, however, arcing space because there are
- 3:40:36more things I dislike about robot than I disliked about
- 3:40:40arcing space. So, I'm gonna say our kids
- 3:40:43space. okay, Elliot robot. Why.
- 3:40:52Okay? Explain yourself.
- 3:40:55I I I know it's all when I went into the city, I saw knew what I
- 3:41:02liked to what, I didn't like, but robot, I don't know.
- 3:41:05It's just the one that stuck most in my head and obviously,
- 3:41:08shouldn't all be done, based off.
- 3:41:10We watch ability because like it's a Genesis is not
- 3:41:12necessarily watchable, but it's really good, but it's the one
- 3:41:16that I would I would just reach for to watch straight away.
- 3:41:20You know, I think this is a very comforting season of talk too
- 3:41:22and that is the most comforting one for me, I think it's for a
- 3:41:26normal and funny, and silly and it's everything I look for in
- 3:41:29Doctor Who Joe with an e. Well, did you like, it's a bit
- 3:41:37tough because if I was having a bad day, I would come over and I
- 3:41:41would put on robot because it is just a blood.
- 3:41:43All the things you've just said this silly and saying Farm, you
- 3:41:47know, ridiculous just wonderfully over ambitious
- 3:41:51special effects just bomb. Um, and if I wanted to come home
- 3:41:56and watch, I just a really brilliant slice of Doctor Who I
- 3:41:59would put on the Ark in space because it is a few dodgy
- 3:42:03effects aside peelers but I'm gonna go for robot because I
- 3:42:09just don't think we have enough female Nazis wearing Deirdre
- 3:42:13Barlow, glasses, it Doctor, Who and that's my only reason, I
- 3:42:18think this winter is a great villain.
- 3:42:20She is great. Okay, so that's two for robot.
- 3:42:26Would you like me to go next to? Would you like to go next?
- 3:42:32Oh, you go next. Okay.
- 3:42:37I'm going to go. I'm going to go for Arc in
- 3:42:42space. oh, because if we're going to be talking about strong
- 3:42:47female characters, I think Via is a much better performance.
- 3:42:53I'm not saying that Patricia Maynard is, doesn't give a good
- 3:42:56performance because she does but I think there's there are
- 3:43:00definitely times when she's really Purposefully Hamming, it
- 3:43:05up a little bit and I think Wendy Williams is one of those
- 3:43:09performance is which is really and undervalued. and, Also
- 3:43:18there's no CSO tanks in Arkham space, but there is the there is
- 3:43:23the bubble wrap it. Now, I'm gonna go for Arc In
- 3:43:25Space if no other reason to create this false Jeopardy, and
- 3:43:29get everybody guessing his who's gonna win, which one's gonna
- 3:43:32win. Joe before we go on can I just
- 3:43:35say mother? I feel sick then for the doctor
- 3:43:40quick. Quick, quick, quick. my oldest
- 3:43:52friend is called the I've known him since I was 11 so it's a
- 3:43:56very long time. And somehow.
- 3:44:00The late 80s. Like you don't, I don't know
- 3:44:07how. and, He also became friends with her daughter who I think we
- 3:44:13all know ended up in EastEnders. Oh yeah, Hannah.
- 3:44:17Yeah, Hannah Waterman you could tell she was quite young because
- 3:44:22she tried to get up with my friend.
- 3:44:23Dean who is not the sort of person.
- 3:44:26Scandal. Yes, so just like Dean was not
- 3:44:32interested. That's not the reason I'm gonna
- 3:44:45I like them both, if you get more different, you know, you
- 3:44:49are basically once the end of the year.
- 3:44:51So Excellent in so many ways. I've got one question for you,
- 3:45:02Joe. I got one question for you to
- 3:45:05have in your hand the power. To chew.
- 3:45:09I know. Would you do it?
- 3:45:14Oh, what the hell? Robot?
- 3:45:16Yeah. Would you like a Chili baby?
- 3:45:37I had to do it, you know? Yes, yes.
- 3:45:40I know it was insane and it did terrible things but At first, it
- 3:45:47was so humid. It was a wonderful creature
- 3:45:49capable of great good. And great evil.
- 3:45:54Yes. I think you could say she was
- 3:45:56human. You know what you need is a
- 3:46:00change. How about a little trip in a
- 3:46:02tardis? I'm dust off.
- 3:46:03You can't just go why not? It's a free Cosmos it's the big
- 3:46:07idea. What's me to address the
- 3:46:09cabinet. I've learned that Downing Street
- 3:46:11dinner at the palace and write 17 reports in triplicate.
- 3:46:14Well, I won't do it. I won't I won't I won't I
- 3:46:19should, of course I am. There's no point in being grown
- 3:46:24up. If you can't be childish,
- 3:46:25sometimes are you coming? Oh, what are you two up to now
- 3:46:45we're just going on a little trip.
- 3:46:47Would you like a Jelly Baby? Little trip Odell.
- 3:46:51Please box. yes, as a matter of fact, in that old police box,
- 3:46:55Come along. Now, doctor, we're both
- 3:46:56reasonable men and we both know that police boxes.
- 3:46:59Don't go careering around all over the place.
- 3:47:01Do we? Of course we do.
- 3:47:02The whole idea is upset, is it? You wouldn't like to step inside
- 3:47:07the moment, just to demonstrate that it is all in lose.
- 3:47:10Well, if you think it'll do any good oh yes, it will make me
- 3:47:12feel a lot better. And you go.
- 3:47:19Right. oh, come on, you know me my Oh my God.
- 3:47:37Every so ridiculous. Or worthy.
- 3:47:40I go for the ridiculous every time I have no issue with that
- 3:47:44because I'm gonna be that I would have been happy to let any
- 3:47:48of these with the least contentious.
- 3:47:50Strictly we've had, there's no, yes, huge arguments are not
- 3:47:55straight up. I would have been happy for any
- 3:47:58of them to win, honestly. I absolutely none of any I want
- 3:48:02to be in this, you know, I wouldn't have gone but hell if
- 3:48:05any of them would want a lot of people, you know.
- 3:48:09So but I'm, you know, I would have been happy hour away, you
- 3:48:13know, I could have been tomorrow if you asked me I might say.
- 3:48:16Oh, but today I said Honestly, a lot of my, as well, as a lot of
- 3:48:20my doctor who Journey being watching, something and saying,
- 3:48:24oh, I quite enjoyed that. And then reading that.
- 3:48:26It's absolutely the worst thing ever since the creation of the
- 3:48:28earth is watering something that I think.
- 3:48:31Yeah. That was.
- 3:48:33All right, I quite enjoyed that and then reading that it's an
- 3:48:35absolute all conquering, magical classic.
- 3:48:38That's so much better than the thing that I also quite enjoyed
- 3:48:42and thinking, well, I'm not that, I'm so person, you know?
- 3:48:46I always say, oh, everyone, everyone's gonna watch this.
- 3:48:49It must watch it. And I sort of go.
- 3:48:50I put my hackles up and go. Well, I don't like, I just like
- 3:48:54being told I don't like being told what I should like, that's
- 3:48:57my thing. You know, it wasn't that so
- 3:49:01much. It was just the normal turning,
- 3:49:03the massive enormous yawning Gulf between the two like, yeah.
- 3:49:07Okay, I can see that perhaps that doesn't hold up quite as
- 3:49:10well as that does, but I like them.
- 3:49:12But mostly, I mean, I feel you might be the Strictly Come
- 3:49:15hamster, format in you in human form, you know.
- 3:49:18Breaking for all the the conventions.
- 3:49:22I love it. I think as we're all of the
- 3:49:25generation, I think we're sort of second or third generation
- 3:49:28fans, who were told in the 80s and the 90s, which stories not
- 3:49:33obviously not you Elliot and it was a problem in the 80s.
- 3:49:35What you was just watching it because I said, watching in 1980
- 3:49:41piece of Davidson, is, is my doctor?
- 3:49:43And was my doctor and that's when I started watching.
- 3:49:45But I was I didn't have many, any friends am.
- 3:49:49I certainly didn't have friends who were in Doctor Who so I
- 3:49:52didn't talk about it with anybody except for my family,
- 3:49:55possibly. So I had no sense of this wider
- 3:49:58judgment. That was taking place.
- 3:50:00I just judged it on whether I like it or not, whether it
- 3:50:04frightened me or not and all and still when I got you a little
- 3:50:08bit older and I was maybe at secondary school.
- 3:50:10I wasn't talking about Doctor Who with people.
- 3:50:14It was a thing that I watched but I didn't.
- 3:50:16So I had no concept of this kind of These presupposed judgment
- 3:50:23that had been placed on it by other people.
- 3:50:24And so, I came to re-watching it with from the same position like
- 3:50:30oh yeah, I enjoyed that. Didn't enjoy that.
- 3:50:32Oh, can you use that bead loose? See that the most unique, most
- 3:50:36individual opinions on Doctor, Who's stories?
- 3:50:39Not necessarily. Sometimes my opinion, chimes,
- 3:50:42with other people but what I mean is, I wasn't in a position
- 3:50:45to say, oh, so-and-so says, this isn't any good, so it's not any
- 3:50:48good. I mean, you say this but it's
- 3:50:52the least contentious episode of Strictly Come answer.
- 3:50:54You wait till it goes out and robot win.
- 3:50:56No. Well, this will be the one
- 3:51:01behind again. Yeah, definitely yeah.
- 3:51:04Oh yeah. He's only out of the Asylum.
- 3:51:08Two days a week now, you know, All that we send the poor man.
- 3:51:12The day he booked into the to The Establishment.
- 3:51:17Was the dilute said horrified rocks.
- 3:51:20Got going to be in and that was it.
- 3:51:22He was dumb. Always a guy in a silent night.
- 3:51:29So that's well robot is a well according to us five a worthy
- 3:51:34winner. I think we as we would have all,
- 3:51:37you know, been happy for any of our five stories to win.
- 3:51:39But congratulations, not repentance of the sidemen.
- 3:51:42What are you talking about? Okay, no, revenge of the
- 3:51:45sidemen. Well yeah, I've struck a blow
- 3:51:49for my family's discomfort of Christmas from nearly 40 years
- 3:51:52ago but thank you very much. Everybody for taking part,
- 3:51:56should we have a quick round at web where people can find you on
- 3:52:00the internet or elsewhere? Please Joe, Joe short, Joe.
- 3:52:07Sorry I'm still on Twitter and I'm going to call it Twitter
- 3:52:10till I die as the brain of spot, but I'm also on Blue Sky and
- 3:52:15threads just as Joe Shaw. I think, you know, you'd find me
- 3:52:18hanging about their do check out her Strictly Come hamster,
- 3:52:22appearance on Season 22. Where she coined, Mark of the
- 3:52:28Ronnie a massacre with doilies Is it today?
- 3:52:40I want to hear once Joe and I thought to listen to these
- 3:52:46things from what he says. Lucy.
- 3:52:51Where can we find you? I am on still on Twitter because
- 3:52:56there are people on Twitter who I like to interact with who
- 3:52:58haven't moved elsewhere. So I will stay in to them there
- 3:53:01at Lucy McCall and also on blue sky, I'm on Instagram and
- 3:53:06Facebook at various versions of my name.
- 3:53:09So if there's nitty characters in the surname is McCall, that's
- 3:53:12going to be me. I have some FanFiction on a
- 3:53:16teaspoon and an open mind. My A handle over there is Elsie,
- 3:53:22Muk e, l s. I e m c c.
- 3:53:24And I wrote some Stories that the brilliant who Cornish Corner
- 3:53:31people turned into audio, dramas which was astonishing and quite
- 3:53:36quite peculiar to listen to the first time thinking.
- 3:53:39Did I write that? Well, that sounds good and but
- 3:53:42that was good. I have been on various podcasts.
- 3:53:46I've done a couple of kettles with string with Dave.
- 3:53:49I've been on some trap ones and with Jim looking in a box and
- 3:53:56also the library of impossible things.
- 3:53:58And at some point, possibly in the next few months, I will have
- 3:54:03a book published by candy jar, which will be continuing
- 3:54:07Adventures, of Miss, Hawthorne and Sergeant Benton.
- 3:54:10And it's kind of a vaguely Supernatural bearing in mind.
- 3:54:15What I said about sci-fi bobbins, so it's like a sort of
- 3:54:19low budget 1978 X-Files with scones I probably links for that
- 3:54:25everybody get pre-ordering that book I want to say we are so
- 3:54:35proud of you. I was there right from the
- 3:54:40beginning. And when we were like, sending
- 3:54:42me them, I was. And I'm like with them right
- 3:54:45from the go. I'm so proud of you and I hope
- 3:54:48you. I hope you have a massive I know
- 3:54:50well because we're all buying it but there is, it's actually like
- 3:54:53it's so nice. That something good has happened
- 3:54:57to somebody wonderful and talented.
- 3:54:59Like, so many nice things happen.
- 3:55:01It's so nice driving somebody great.
- 3:55:04Okay. And he's like, you know,
- 3:55:05somebody just one of us as well. And I'm just so I'm very proud
- 3:55:08of you loose. And I hope, you know, if you
- 3:55:13would care to hear more of Lucy, then do check her out on the
- 3:55:16season. 18 Strictly Come hamster, where Roald gave a 15
- 3:55:21minute criticism of look up police and then Lucy came in
- 3:55:25with the sentence afterwards. I don't care about anything.
- 3:55:28You just said which was the most cutting remark at the time?
- 3:55:32I mean, I could barely stop laughing for the rest.
- 3:55:35It to be quite that because I enjoyed it, the facts didn't
- 3:55:40really It was the one line version of literally ripping the
- 3:55:44carpet out from underneath somebody.
- 3:55:45It was like, it was wonderful. Um, Elliot, where can we find
- 3:55:51you? Um, you can find me in various
- 3:55:55places. I am on Blue Sky and Twitter.
- 3:55:57Usually just Elliott mayor. I'm always tagged in something,
- 3:56:02no doubt. Um, so you can't really miss me,
