- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris, and this is Finding God
- 0:09at Work.
- 0:15Our current series is Gentle Witnesses, sharing the
- 0:18good news at work in a way that
- 0:20actually makes sense.
- 0:26I want to start with a question for
- 0:28you.
- 0:28Have you ever been asked to do something
- 0:31that you were not ready to do?
- 0:35I think about experiences like this in school.
- 0:38Like I had a physics teacher, or excuse
- 0:41me, a physics professor in college.
- 0:43He was really good with advanced level students,
- 0:45but for some reason they asked him to
- 0:47teach this entry level physics class.
- 0:50It was called Ideas of Physics.
- 0:52It was designed for English majors and other
- 0:54people like me who didn't want to do
- 0:55the math.
- 0:56We didn't have to do the math.
- 0:57We were just supposed to learn the ideas.
- 1:00And so he would say something and try
- 1:03to explain it to us, and then he'd
- 1:04say, and I'm sure you understand that, and
- 1:05then move on.
- 1:07It's like everybody would look at each other
- 1:08and be like, we don't understand that.
- 1:10We did not follow anything of what you
- 1:11just said.
- 1:12But he would just blaze straight ahead.
- 1:14He did not know how to pitch things
- 1:17that we were ready for.
- 1:18He went too quickly to the kind of
- 1:20language that he used with his more advanced
- 1:21students, even though we didn't even know how
- 1:23to do the math, and we were lost
- 1:25really fast.
- 1:27Now, unfortunately, he was also really bad at
- 1:29making tests.
- 1:30So we all passed, even though we didn't
- 1:31really learn those ideas.
- 1:33So I guess that was good for our
- 1:34GPA, but bad for our actual learning.
- 1:36I still don't know the ideas of physics.
- 1:37I'm like, f equals ma.
- 1:40Cool.
- 1:41I guess it's like, thema.
- 1:43F equals ma, thema, thema.
- 1:45What does that mean?
- 1:46I don't know.
- 1:47Mass, acceleration, force.
- 1:49It all works somehow.
- 1:50I know how to walk around.
- 1:51I know how to navigate physics practically.
- 1:52I have the ideas, or at least the
- 1:54practice.
- 1:54But I really don't know anything about physics.
- 1:57I watched Oppenheimer.
- 1:57That's the extent of my knowledge of physics.
- 1:59OK, so maybe you've had an experience like
- 2:01this, too, where a teacher or a coach
- 2:03or somebody who's well-intentioned just pushes you
- 2:05into the deep end of the pool and
- 2:06you're overwhelmed.
- 2:07You don't know what you're doing.
- 2:09There is actually a theorist of education, Lev
- 2:11Vygotsky, who was in Eastern Europe in the
- 2:15early 20th century, and he developed this idea
- 2:17of the zone of proximal development, which was
- 2:19kind of to address this behavior of educators
- 2:21and help them improve.
- 2:22It's like you don't want to give somebody
- 2:24something that's so hard that they're just going
- 2:27to be overwhelmed.
- 2:28But you also don't want to give people
- 2:30something that's so easy that they don't even
- 2:32need your help.
- 2:32They could have just learned it themselves directly,
- 2:35like, what's your role as an educator?
- 2:36What you want to do is give people
- 2:38something in their zone of proximal development or
- 2:40like their next step zone that's just hard
- 2:43enough to be challenging, but that with your
- 2:45guidance and intervention and help, they can do
- 2:47it, they can master it.
- 2:49And when you have a really good teacher,
- 2:51that's what they're always doing, is they're always
- 2:52seeing where is your zone of proximal development.
- 2:55What is your next step zone?
- 2:57How can I keep you challenged while also
- 2:59giving you the support that you needed?
- 3:01And really amazing coaches do this, really amazing
- 3:03teachers do this.
- 3:04I had a piano teacher who was like
- 3:05this, so I was playing like Bach's Minuet
- 3:07in G after only nine months of piano
- 3:09lessons, and I thought that was amazing.
- 3:10But she just knew how to pitch it,
- 3:11like, okay, Chris, do this song.
- 3:13Okay, Chris, do this practice.
- 3:14Okay, Chris, do this song.
- 3:15Okay, Chris, memorize this.
- 3:16And like, by me, it's like Bach's Minuet
- 3:19in G, this is super cool.
- 3:21And I took piano lessons for several years,
- 3:23and it was amazing.
- 3:24And hopefully you've had that experience too, whether
- 3:26it's in music or in sports, in academics,
- 3:29in the arts, in some arena of your
- 3:30life, feeling that sense of mastery that comes
- 3:33from facing a challenge and overcoming it with
- 3:35the help of a wise guide.
- 3:39Well, when we think about the good news
- 3:41and sharing the good news, all of us
- 3:43need to grow in our knowledge of the
- 3:46good news.
- 3:46Personally, we need to grow as disciples whose
- 3:49hearts and minds and whole being is being
- 3:52shaped by the proclamation of the power of
- 3:55Jesus' death and resurrection, the good news that
- 3:57everyone who puts their faith in Jesus as
- 4:00Messiah can be forgiven of their sins and
- 4:02enter in the life in the kingdom of
- 4:04God because of his death and resurrection.
- 4:08And that's why we spent the past few
- 4:10episodes laying a foundation for understanding the good
- 4:13news itself.
- 4:13What is the good news?
- 4:15What kind of six key ideas we looked
- 4:17at Kingdom, cross, salvation, healing, communion or eternal
- 4:23life and disciples.
- 4:26Those are all going to key facets, key
- 4:28angles of approach to the good news that
- 4:31God has given us in Scripture.
- 4:33Now we're going to transition and for the
- 4:34next few episodes, we're going to be looking
- 4:36at practically speaking, how do you actually have
- 4:39these kind of conversations in the workplace?
- 4:41And we saw in our last episode that
- 4:43Scripture guides us to meet people where they
- 4:46are at.
- 4:47So that that's the foundational idea that we're
- 4:50going to be working with as we look
- 4:51at the next few episodes.
- 4:53How do we have these conversations is to
- 4:54meet people where they are at.
- 4:57One of the worst mistakes we can make
- 4:59in sharing the good news is to make
- 5:01assumptions about the people in front of us
- 5:03and then just steamroll ahead with our own
- 5:06agenda without a sensitivity of gauging where they're
- 5:09at, their level of openness, what's going on
- 5:12for them as much as we can intuiting
- 5:14the work of the Holy Spirit in their
- 5:16lives.
- 5:17It's by being sensitive by being in tune
- 5:20with what's going on in another person's life
- 5:22that we can actually listen in the right
- 5:24way and then speak a word that might
- 5:27actually make a difference in their lives.
- 5:30And as I was reflecting on how to
- 5:31structure this section of the podcast, I realized
- 5:34I should not structure it myself.
- 5:35I should not come up with my own
- 5:37little dainty list of good ideas.
- 5:38I should go to people who have done
- 5:40this for longer than I have and who
- 5:41are more mature and whose work has been
- 5:43vetted by a greater number of people.
- 5:45So I'm going to some of the best
- 5:46of the best Don Everts and Doug Schaupp
- 5:49from InterVarsity.
- 5:51Now, I would not be surprised if you've
- 5:52never heard those names.
- 5:53These guys are not famous, but they are
- 5:55wonderful practitioners of sharing the good news with
- 5:58other people.
- 5:59They've done it on college campuses.
- 6:00They've done it with adults.
- 6:01They've done it in very relational ways under
- 6:03the auspices of the Ministry InterVarsity Christian Fellowship
- 6:05and they wrote a book about their approach.
- 6:07Called I Once Was Lost.
- 6:09This was published a while ago in 2008,
- 6:10but it's really stood the test of time
- 6:12and I've led trainings on the model that
- 6:15they developed in this book.
- 6:16I've experienced trying to put these things into
- 6:18practice in my own personal life.
- 6:19So I really believe in it and I
- 6:21largely believe in it because it's so grounded
- 6:23in Scripture.
- 6:24Everything that they unfold in this model is
- 6:27found in the New Testament as well, but
- 6:29they actually stumbled into it themselves because they
- 6:32had been involved in ministry in such a
- 6:34way that more than 2,000 adults had
- 6:36come to faith through the InterVarsity Ministry that
- 6:38they were part of and they realized we
- 6:41should interview these people.
- 6:42We should figure out what happened like are
- 6:44there any common patterns of how these adults
- 6:47came to faith and they found out that
- 6:48they were common patterns and they called the
- 6:51patterns that they found the five thresholds of
- 6:55faith.
- 6:56So they're kind of five gateways or thresholds
- 6:58that people had to step through on their
- 7:01journey towards faith in Jesus.
- 7:04So let me just read this election from
- 7:06their book.
- 7:07I once was lost.
- 7:08This is early on page 15 writes to
- 7:11our initial surprise.
- 7:12We noticed certain common experiences among our friends
- 7:14journeys to faith as we celebrated all the
- 7:17conversations we have noticed the same things were
- 7:19popping up again and again.
- 7:22These general themes were so prevalent.
- 7:23In fact that a group of us came
- 7:25up with what we started calling the five
- 7:27thresholds in an in-house working document that
- 7:30sought to give words to what we were
- 7:31seeing this unpublished article began to circulate a
- 7:34bit then the news began to trickle back
- 7:35to us our friends around the United States
- 7:37and even in other parts of the world
- 7:38found that these five phases found these five
- 7:40phases to ring true for them in their
- 7:43own context.
- 7:45We were stunned have these particular new believers
- 7:47actually taught us something generally true about the
- 7:50path to faith.
- 7:51The more confirmation we got as the years
- 7:53went on the more we realized we were
- 7:55on to something real.
- 7:57So I love it.
- 7:58It's kind of a serendipitous story.
- 8:00It wasn't something that was strategized.
- 8:02It was just let's learn what we can
- 8:03by listening to people by listening to their
- 8:05stories.
- 8:05So you see they're practicing what they preach
- 8:07about the importance of listening even in the
- 8:09methodology they use to develop this model and
- 8:12then when you hear the model, it'll just
- 8:13ring true.
- 8:14So let me lay it out.
- 8:15There's five thresholds or five steps that they
- 8:18give on people's journey to faith and that's
- 8:21trusting a Christian becoming curious opening up to
- 8:26change seeking after God and entering the Kingdom.
- 8:33So to summarize briefly, it's one trust to
- 8:37curious three open for seeking and then five
- 8:43entering or deciding to follow Jesus.
- 8:48And doesn't that pathway those five steps just
- 8:50kind of make sense like imagine somebody who
- 8:52does not have a Christian background or is
- 8:54never seriously entertain the idea of following Jesus.
- 8:57What's going to catalyze a change for them?
- 8:58Well, it's if they trust a Christian friend
- 9:00and in the context of that friendship, then
- 9:02they might naturally become curious about what that
- 9:05person believes if it comes up and then
- 9:07even beyond a kind of intellectual curiosity.
- 9:08They might have an openness to personal change.
- 9:10There might be that that switch where they're
- 9:12like, oh, what what if this could actually
- 9:14affect my life and then that might motivate
- 9:17them to seek after God not just to
- 9:18consider the possibility but to really explore and
- 9:21figure out what do I believe and why
- 9:22do I believe it and is it real
- 9:23and is it solid and then it's in
- 9:25that seeking that they might find Jesus and
- 9:28enter in to the Kingdom of God decide
- 9:31to follow Jesus.
- 9:33So I love this model.
- 9:34It's beautiful.
- 9:35It's coherent.
- 9:36It's practical.
- 9:37And so what we're going to do is
- 9:38we might take more than five episodes.
- 9:40I haven't quite figured it out yet.
- 9:41We might break some of these into multiple
- 9:42episodes.
- 9:43We're going to take at least five episodes
- 9:45and just look at each of these thresholds.
- 9:46So starting with our next one trusting a
- 9:48Christian friend, what does it mean to build
- 9:50trust with your friends co-workers other people
- 9:52you may encounter at work?
- 9:54And how is that the foundation for everything
- 9:56else that you do as you're sharing the
- 9:58good news?
- 10:00So just as kind of a practical thing
- 10:02as we're introducing this part of the series,
- 10:04I want you to just think about one
- 10:06co-worker, you know, or one person you're
- 10:08connected to at work, whether it's a vendor
- 10:09or client or co-worker and somebody who
- 10:13is not yet committed to following Jesus as
- 10:15far as you know and just based on
- 10:16that initial description, which threshold are they at?
- 10:20Are they at the threshold of needing to
- 10:23trust a Christian or beginning to trust a
- 10:25Christian?
- 10:25Maybe you.
- 10:27Are they maybe curious about faith in an
- 10:29intellectual way?
- 10:30Have they shown some degree of personal openness
- 10:32as though they think some change could really
- 10:34happen in their life?
- 10:36Are they actively seeking after God trying to
- 10:38figure out what they believe and why?
- 10:41Or are they on the cusp of entering
- 10:42the kingdom choosing to follow Jesus?
- 10:46Just think about which of those steps 1,
- 10:472, 3, 4, or 5 is your friend
- 10:50at?
- 10:53Okay, so now think about what's your role
- 10:54in that friendship?
- 10:55Well, it's to be a good friend, to
- 10:57live life in the power of the fruit
- 10:58of the Spirit, to do your job.
- 10:59Well, all those things we talked about in
- 11:01the imagining work series and the fruitful work
- 11:03series.
- 11:03Yes, yes, yes.
- 11:04And now as a gentle witness, it's to
- 11:07ask, ah, how can I help them take
- 11:10their next step?
- 11:12What's the next step zone for this friend?
- 11:15Not something that's so deep and so beyond
- 11:18where they're at that it would be overwhelming,
- 11:20but also not something that's just so passive
- 11:22and easy that like my presence doesn't even
- 11:24make a difference.
- 11:24How can I, as a faithful friend, as
- 11:28a kind of spiritual guide, just because I'm
- 11:30learning from Jesus and want others to learn
- 11:32from Him too, can I come alongside and
- 11:34help them take their next step?
- 11:38And we'll be looking a lot more at
- 11:39that starting in our next episode.
- 11:44Lord Jesus, thank you that you come to
- 11:46us and meet us where we're at.
- 11:48That you help us take our next step
- 11:50and that you came and found us.
- 11:54Show us how to be faithful friends to
- 11:56our coworkers.
- 11:57Show us how to help them take their
- 11:59next step towards you.
- 12:01Do your work in us as we do
- 12:03our work with you.
- 12:09Thanks for listening.
