- 0:17Speaker 1: Yes, some of us have just completed another trip around
- 0:22Speaker 1: the sun, but anytime it's a birthday, it's a.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Good thing, right? So there we go.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And thanks to everybody who has messaged me and Facebook
- 0:38Speaker 1: messaged me and texted me and all that kind of
- 0:41Speaker 1: stuff at the birthday party.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Greetings.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Yes, today is my birthday. Glad to have you with
- 0:46Speaker 1: us this afternoon. Welcome to the program here on 1300
- 0:48Speaker 1: The Zone. Let me say this right from the start.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'm Craig Way and the producer is Jay Kerman. What
- 0:54Speaker 1: we are not going to do, what we are not
- 0:57Speaker 1: going to do today is have every bump back return
- 1:02Speaker 1: cut be birthday related. I was okay with this one, A,
- 1:05Speaker 1: because I didn't know he was going to do it. B,
- 1:07Speaker 1: that's okay. But this is a Yacht Rock Wednesday, so
- 1:11Speaker 1: we're leaning into Yacht Rock like we always do, but
- 1:14Speaker 1: I appreciate the sentiment and the greeting to start off
- 1:17Speaker 1: today's show.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I hope you enjoyed the surprise, and Craig, we
- 1:19Speaker 3: expected nothing less than a fully operational Yacht Rock Wednesday.
- 1:25Speaker 3: It's like the Death Star. I'm afraid it'll be fully
- 1:27Speaker 3: operational when Craig's birthday arrives.
- 1:29Speaker 2: My friend, it will be completely... Yeah, what's the other
- 1:32Speaker 2: line he has? He has.
- 1:35Speaker 4: now witness the firepower of this fully operational battle station.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Something like that, right?
- 1:41Speaker 3: Soon your pathetic fleet will be crushed. That's it.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm old enough, obviously, to remember all of those
- 1:47Speaker 2: lines going through.
- 1:49Speaker 1: So, anyway, a lot to get to today on the program.
- 1:53Speaker 1: First thing I want to tell you, this, of course, yes,
- 1:57Speaker 1: it's a Yacht Rock Wednesday. It's also a day where
- 1:59Speaker 1: we go over and we record Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Which airs on Thursday.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Tomorrow, I think, are we back to 5.30 airtime tomorrow
- 2:09Speaker 1: with the Round Rock Express having the, you know, they're
- 2:15Speaker 1: on their final homestand of the season. So we have
- 2:19Speaker 1: an express game tomorrow night.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Back to 5.30.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:23Speaker 1: So it'll air tomorrow afternoon at 5.30. We're recording it
- 2:30Speaker 1: this evening over on campus. And obviously, Head coach Steve
- 2:35Speaker 1: Sarkeesian will review the win over Ohio State, and we'll
- 2:40Speaker 1: start talking about getting ready for UTSA and all that
- 2:43Speaker 1: sort of stuff. Our special guest is Jackson Jeffcoat, who
- 2:48Speaker 1: is going into the Longhorn Hall of Honor.
- 2:52Speaker 2: He'll be inducted.
- 2:55Speaker 1: The banquet and ceremony induction is on Friday night, and Jackson,
- 2:59Speaker 1: one of our all-time favorites, outstanding career at Texas, and one,
- 3:04Speaker 1: I think two gray cups playing for the Winnipeg blue bombers.
- 3:07Speaker 1: One time he brought the gray cup trophy with him
- 3:11Speaker 1: over on campus. It was really cool to see. Um, so, uh,
- 3:16Speaker 1: Jackson Jeffcoat will be our guest. Now, again, we're going
- 3:18Speaker 1: to record that show, uh, as we always do, uh,
- 3:22Speaker 1: this evening and it'll air tomorrow at five 30.
- 3:25Speaker 2: So we'll visit with Jackson Jeffcoat on the program.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And, um, we'll do a lot of the same normal
- 3:34Speaker 1: things that we normally do. Now, speaking of UTSA and
- 3:38Speaker 1: Sark will, and we'll talk about them. Yesterday, we had
- 3:42Speaker 1: the head coach of the UTSA Roadrunners, Jeff Traylor, on
- 3:45Speaker 1: the program.
- 3:47Speaker 2: And I had a lot of people.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Reach out to me through, again, through Facebook messages and
- 3:54Speaker 1: texting and things like that and said, did you have
- 3:57Speaker 1: Jeff Traylor on the show?
- 3:59Speaker 2: And the answer is yes, we did. And It was
- 4:02Speaker 2: in the four o'clock hour.
- 4:04Speaker 1: So the way that I've discovered over the three years
- 4:09Speaker 1: that I've been here, back here, you know, I was
- 4:11Speaker 1: here for 19 years and then went across town and
- 4:14Speaker 1: then came back after six and a half years. And
- 4:16Speaker 1: so I've been back here for three years. And going
- 4:21Speaker 1: into the two to five slot, what I have ultimately
- 4:25Speaker 1: discovered is that I wouldn't say we have two different
- 4:30Speaker 1: listening audiences, but there's kind of an overlap. There's some
- 4:33Speaker 1: people who listen to us in the early to mid
- 4:38Speaker 1: afternoon that then disengage, you know, for whatever their activities
- 4:42Speaker 1: are or work or whatever. And then we have the
- 4:45Speaker 1: second group that's in the office or at work until
- 4:50Speaker 1: around four o'clock. And then they join us afterwards, like
- 4:54Speaker 1: on their drive home or wherever they might be. So
- 4:58Speaker 1: sometimes some of the programming that we do on, uh,
- 5:04Speaker 1: you know, say in the two o'clock hour, the people
- 5:07Speaker 1: in the four o'clock hour didn't get to hear it.
- 5:10Speaker 1: So there are times that will re-air it. Now we always,
- 5:14Speaker 1: you know, instruct you that you can go to our
- 5:16Speaker 1: podcast page, um, at am13underthezone. com. You can go, you can
- 5:21Speaker 1: go to that and, and listen to it. Um, But
- 5:26Speaker 1: for those who don't and just want to hear it,
- 5:28Speaker 1: you know, we do it that way. Well, today is
- 5:30Speaker 1: a day of the inverse. We aired that conversation with
- 5:36Speaker 1: Coach Traylor in the 4 o'clock hour. That's when he
- 5:38Speaker 1: joined us live yesterday in the 4 o'clock hour. And
- 5:41Speaker 1: I had people ask me about it.
- 5:42Speaker 5: So.
- 5:43Speaker 1: We're going to play it, replay it for you, re-air
- 5:46Speaker 1: it for you here coming up in a few minutes.
- 5:48Speaker 1: So for those of you who normally listen to us
- 5:51Speaker 1: in the 2 o'clock, maybe the 3 o'clock hour as well,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and did not get a chance to hear the conversation,
- 5:55Speaker 1: or maybe you just didn't get a chance to hear it, period,
- 5:57Speaker 1: you'll get a chance to hear it.
- 5:58Speaker 2: It's revealing stuff.
- 6:01Speaker 1: We've been friends a long time, and like I said,
- 6:04Speaker 1: I've called a state championship games that his teams have
- 6:07Speaker 1: won and things like that. We've known each other a
- 6:09Speaker 1: long time. But we will... get him to talk about
- 6:13Speaker 1: his team, about the Longhorns, and also about kind of
- 6:19Speaker 1: the state of college football and where they are as
- 6:22Speaker 1: a G6 program.
- 6:24Speaker 2: So we'll do that coming up in a few minutes.
- 6:26Speaker 1: We will have Inconceivable this hour, so we will do that.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And then we're going to hear from Justin Cryer of
- 6:37Speaker 1: the Longhorns. We're going to hear from Brian Schottenheimer. We're
- 6:40Speaker 1: going to hear from D'Amico Ryans as both of those
- 6:45Speaker 1: head coaches of the two NFL teams based in the
- 6:49Speaker 1: state of Texas try to flip the script and get
- 6:51Speaker 1: turned back around this week. And so we'll hear from
- 6:57Speaker 1: both of those head coaches as well. So we look
- 6:59Speaker 1: forward to bringing you all of that. So stay with us.
- 7:05Speaker 1: We've got some baseball notes we'll get to as well.
- 7:08Speaker 1: But up next, we'll visit with Jeff Traylor, head coach
- 7:10Speaker 1: of the UTSA Roadrunners, when we continue on Sports Radio
- 7:13Speaker 1: AM 13 Under the Zone and where you can always
- 7:15Speaker 1: listen to us for free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 7:25Speaker 6: He's one of.
- 7:28Speaker 3: The guys that folks say if you were doing the
- 7:33Speaker 3: Mount Rushmore of individual.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Events, Yacht rock artist. He might deserve a place on
- 7:59Speaker 1: the mountain. That would be the great Gordon Lightfoot. I mean,
- 8:03Speaker 1: Michael McDonald's the godfather. We know that. Kenny Loggins definitely
- 8:10Speaker 1: belongs on it. Christopher Cross. Those are three definites. You
- 8:14Speaker 1: get beyond those three, it's open to debate. In discussion,
- 8:19Speaker 1: I would say.
- 8:19Speaker 3: And he's Canadian, right? Gordon Lightfoot?
- 8:21Speaker 1: Yep.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Because I think I remember, I've got, you know, an
- 8:23Speaker 3: aunt and uncle that live in Toronto. I've got a
- 8:26Speaker 3: lot of family up in Canada. And they're musicians. And
- 8:29Speaker 3: he is very inspirational for them.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Yeah. He was a great singer-songwriter. And, you know, when
- 8:36Speaker 1: I was... When I went to see the Guess Who
- 8:39Speaker 1: back in August, and, of course, they were from Saskatchewan.
- 8:44Speaker 2: And they.
- 8:46Speaker 1: they even were talking about it, that he was one
- 8:52Speaker 1: of their influences. And we were talking about in between songs,
- 8:56Speaker 1: Burton Cummings standing up there talking about what a great
- 8:59Speaker 1: influence he was and that sort of thing. So yeah,
- 9:01Speaker 1: and that's one of his standards there, a sundown for sure.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Here on a Yacht Rock Wednesday on 1300 The Zone,
- 9:10Speaker 1: we mentioned what a ball game it was in baseball.
- 9:15Speaker 2: The Rangers are hanging tough.
- 9:17Speaker 1: They're a game below 500, but they're only a game
- 9:21Speaker 1: below the Astros.
- 9:23Speaker 2: In the American League Central.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I'm telling you, this is going to go to the
- 9:26Speaker 1: final week, and I'm telling you, it is not out
- 9:29Speaker 1: of the realm of possibility that the winner of the
- 9:31Speaker 1: American League West winds up with a sub-500 record.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Well, the Astros got a Bronx cheer on big inning,
- 9:36Speaker 3: which I just love, MLB big inning. Matt Yaloff said, oh,
- 9:39Speaker 3: would you look at that? The division leaders are over
- 9:42Speaker 3: 500 again, and that's the case for the Astros. How
- 9:44Speaker 3: about the high wire act from Jacob Latz in that
- 9:47Speaker 3: game from the Rangers? Absolutely.
- 9:48Speaker 1: You talk about leverage, bring him into a high leverage
- 9:51Speaker 1: situation in the eighth inning. and ask him to perform,
- 9:54Speaker 1: and he was able to do that. Milwaukee Brewers have
- 9:57Speaker 1: clinched the National League Central. The Dodgers can clinch if
- 10:01Speaker 1: they win the night over Cincinnati or if San Diego
- 10:04Speaker 1: were to lose Again, to the Colorado Rockies. They got
- 10:08Speaker 1: bludgeoned by the Rockies.
- 10:09Speaker 3: And they get one. They get one, right? It was
- 10:12Speaker 3: an eight-game win streak for the Padres. They had some
- 10:14Speaker 3: big come-from-behind wins over the course of it. But yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 3: the ball was jumping as it usually does at Coors
- 10:19Speaker 3: Field last night. And the Padres... Couldn't get anybody out.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:23Speaker 1: So the race is still continuing in a variety of areas.
- 10:28Speaker 1: The American League wildcard thing very much up for grabs.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Of course, the Guardians going into today having taken the
- 10:35Speaker 1: first two from the White Sox within a half game
- 10:37Speaker 1: going into it and 2-0 the score in the fourth inning.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Cleveland up looking to move into first place in the
- 10:43Speaker 1: Central if they wind up winning that game.
- 10:45Speaker 2: So that's important.
- 10:47Speaker 1: The other thing about the National League wildcard is is
- 10:51Speaker 1: that the Diamondbacks let one get away last night in
- 10:54Speaker 1: extra innings to the Marlins.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't stay up for that. Yeah, they lost
- 10:58Speaker 3: four to two.
- 11:00Speaker 1: And so as a result, they remained two and a
- 11:03Speaker 1: half back of San Diego.
- 11:05Speaker 2: They had a lead pretty late. It looked like they.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Were going to win, or it was tied, and they
- 11:10Speaker 1: had the potential game-winning runs on base. Couldn't get it home.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And the Diamondbacks end up winning the game four to two.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Marlins, you mean?
- 11:20Speaker 1: I'm sorry, the Marlins ended up beating the Diamondbacks 4-2.
- 11:23Speaker 1: So the Diamondbacks are two and a half back of
- 11:25Speaker 1: the Padres now. Those, realistically, are the only two teams
- 11:31Speaker 1: left fighting for a wild card spot. The Pirates are
- 11:34Speaker 1: like seven back and the Cardinals seven out. They're not
- 11:36Speaker 1: going to catch. There's not enough time left with like
- 11:38Speaker 1: a dozen games or 11 games left.
- 11:40Speaker 3: There's just not enough time. And the Pirates got missed yesterday.
- 11:43Speaker 7: Yeah, they did.
- 11:43Speaker 2: They did. He did his thing.
- 11:47Speaker 3: They're looking for their first winning season in, what is it,
- 11:50Speaker 3: seven or eight years at Pittsburgh, and that's what they're
- 11:53Speaker 3: playing for. But I think you're right, Craig. They are
- 11:55Speaker 3: just probably not going to survive the weekend in terms
- 11:58Speaker 3: of being alive.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it's probably going to be like that. So anyway,
- 12:02Speaker 1: that's where that is. And so San Diego and Arizona, realistically,
- 12:08Speaker 1: are fighting for that last wildcard spot.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Well, as chance would have it, the last.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Weekend of the regular season is Arizona and San Diego
- 12:15Speaker 1: for three games.
- 12:17Speaker 7: So.
- 12:18Speaker 2: That might factor into that.
- 12:19Speaker 1: We'll see, unless Arizona continues to fall off and San
- 12:22Speaker 1: Diego builds enough of a lead and a cushion where
- 12:25Speaker 1: they can wrap it up even before they get to
- 12:27Speaker 1: that regular season-ending three-game series at Petco Park.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I think we have four Rays-Yankees games left.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Yeah, we do.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Midweek next week, the Yankees host the Rays for four.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it's big. That's big.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Yankees' last big push to try to catch Tampa Bay
- 12:44Speaker 1: off of that. We'll talk some more baseball as we
- 12:46Speaker 1: go forward. But as we mentioned, we had the opportunity
- 12:50Speaker 1: yesterday to talk with Jeff Traylor, the head coach of
- 12:54Speaker 1: the UTSA Roadrunners. Of course, they're the opponent for the
- 12:56Speaker 1: Longhorns Saturday night at Darrow K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Our coverage will begin at 3 o'clock. with the third
- 13:04Speaker 1: and Longhorn podcast guys. They'll have their breakdown at three.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Longhorn's game day from Bevo Boulevard. Have you gotten used
- 13:11Speaker 1: to being out there at the Winship area there? Yeah.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Even in the heated conditions? Well, look, at this point,
- 13:20Speaker 3: I'm used to the heat because it is my, like
- 13:22Speaker 3: I've said on the show a few times, my first
- 13:24Speaker 3: full summer in Texas. And I can't believe we've got
- 13:27Speaker 3: a few more weeks of this heat. I'm used to it,
- 13:29Speaker 3: but I'm still incredulous that it's here.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Be thankful that supposedly the high on Saturday will only
- 13:35Speaker 1: be 98. It'll be below 100. It won't be 102
- 13:38Speaker 1: like it's supposed to be today and some of the
- 13:39Speaker 1: other stuff.
- 13:39Speaker 2: So, you know. Just be thankful for the small things.
- 13:43Speaker 3: I feel like I told the guys down there last week,
- 13:45Speaker 3: I feel like Francis Tiafoe. I brought three shirts.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Yeah, that's probably a good idea. But, I mean, you
- 13:50Speaker 1: grew up in the Washington, D.C. area where it wouldn't
- 13:53Speaker 1: get 100 degrees, but it was so humid and muggy.
- 13:56Speaker 1: I remember being up there a couple of times where
- 13:58Speaker 1: it was just, you know, you just walk around dripping.
- 14:01Speaker 3: But I think I sweat more here. I mean, because
- 14:03Speaker 3: I was lucky enough to get to go into the
- 14:05Speaker 3: stadium and watch the Texas-Ohio State game. I looked at
- 14:07Speaker 3: myself in the mirror. My face, my entire face is
- 14:10Speaker 3: dripping sweat.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:13Speaker 1: It's hot conditions, no doubt about it. And it'll be
- 14:17Speaker 1: hot again, but again, the kickoff is even a half
- 14:19Speaker 1: hour later this time at, or well, it's actually gonna
- 14:22Speaker 1: be about between 10 and 15 minutes later because it
- 14:25Speaker 1: wound up kicking off pretty close to 6.50 the other night,
- 14:27Speaker 1: but it'll be just.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Past seven o'clock when they play.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And so Texas will play UTSA. Jeff Traylor, remember, was
- 14:36Speaker 1: a former, at one time, Longhorn assistant. Charlie Strong hired him.
- 14:39Speaker 1: He was after he'd won the state championships at Gilmer
- 14:43Speaker 1: and was on that staff. And then he went to
- 14:45Speaker 1: the Arkansas staff and then wound up getting the head
- 14:47Speaker 1: coaching job at UTSA. Seven years there, he's done a
- 14:50Speaker 1: heck of a job there. And you'll be able to
- 14:55Speaker 1: tell from the conversation, we've kind of known each other
- 14:57Speaker 1: a little while. So anyway, this was the conversation from
- 14:59Speaker 1: yesterday in the four o'clock hour that we had with
- 15:03Speaker 1: the head coach of the UTSA Roadrunners, Jeff Traylor. As
- 15:07Speaker 1: we mentioned, you know, here's Texas getting ready to play UTSA.
- 15:12Speaker 1: And it's always a privilege and a pleasure and a
- 15:16Speaker 1: lot of fun to visit with a friend, a guy
- 15:19Speaker 1: whose state championship games had the pleasure of calling back
- 15:22Speaker 1: when he was tearing it up at Gilmer, of course,
- 15:25Speaker 1: to Gilmer, Texas, native. And the head coach of the
- 15:28Speaker 1: UTSA Roadrunners, Jeff Traylor, joins us. Now, I appreciate the
- 15:33Speaker 1: time and you look rather serene this afternoon. Is everything
- 15:40Speaker 1: at peace given the fact that you have a good
- 15:44Speaker 1: football team and you're right in the belly of the
- 15:48Speaker 1: beast in terms of your schedule and getting ready before
- 15:51Speaker 1: you start American Conference play?
- 15:55Speaker 8: If you just got through watching the horns rally in
- 15:58Speaker 8: the fourth quarter like that at DKR, how serene would.
- 16:02Speaker 7: You be, Craig?
- 16:05Speaker 2: Listen, point taken.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Let me get you to start with your team and
- 16:11Speaker 1: that rally to win that game in San Marcos. I
- 16:15Speaker 1: had it on a big laptop in the broadcast booth.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And the two games, you know, starting and finishing were overlapping.
- 16:23Speaker 1: But I couldn't help but continuing to sneak a peek
- 16:25Speaker 1: and seeing how your guys rallied back. And I also
- 16:28Speaker 1: understand this, and I think you've mentioned this once before,
- 16:30Speaker 1: and I know some of the players have, that it
- 16:33Speaker 1: means a lot in this matchup with Texas State, the
- 16:36Speaker 1: I-35 rivalry. and all of that, and I know that
- 16:38Speaker 1: all plays into it, but it was about also getting
- 16:40Speaker 1: a football victory and getting a 2-0. How about your
- 16:42Speaker 1: review overall of what you've seen of your guys in
- 16:44Speaker 1: the first two weeks, and especially that turnaround and the comeback.
- 16:47Speaker 2: And the win?
- 16:49Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know how good we are. I don't
- 16:51Speaker 7: know if we're as talented as we have been.
- 16:52Speaker 8: We were intentional this portal window to get guys that
- 16:57Speaker 8: we knew very well, we had a relationship with. We
- 17:01Speaker 8: didn't chase talent as much as we have in the past.
- 17:04Speaker 8: We chased production on the field and character.
- 17:06Speaker 7: So we're not as big. We're not as fast.
- 17:10Speaker 8: But we have unbelievable team chemistry. I think we were
- 17:14Speaker 8: just grittier Saturday. We just lasted longer. It felt like
- 17:18Speaker 8: some of my older teams, I used to coach those
- 17:20Speaker 8: first four years. We just hung in there. We were
- 17:25Speaker 8: down 17 to Saturday halftime.
- 17:26Speaker 7: No one blinked.
- 17:28Speaker 8: All 78 that traveled were eyes on head coach. I
- 17:32Speaker 8: know that seems silly. We had great body language. I
- 17:35Speaker 8: told them we were getting the ball first. As long
- 17:37Speaker 8: as it was fourth.
- 17:38Speaker 3: And five, no matter where it was, we were going
- 17:40Speaker 3: to go for it.
- 17:41Speaker 7: I didn't care where it was. And wouldn't you.
- 17:44Speaker 8: Know it would be fourth and six on about my
- 17:46Speaker 8: minus 40 on the opening drive. And we went ahead
- 17:49Speaker 8: and went for it. And Owen made a clutch throw.
- 17:54Speaker 8: David Amador made a heck of a double pass. They
- 17:56Speaker 8: got the momentum going, and, you know, we outscored them
- 17:59Speaker 8: 24-9 that quarter and had a touchdown callback, so 31-9.
- 18:02Speaker 7: It was a good call on the callback, so 24-9.
- 18:09Speaker 1: You have talked about, Bill, and we've talked about your
- 18:14Speaker 1: 210 and triangle of toughness and things of that nature.
- 18:16Speaker 1: And it's in this day and age, in the ever-changing
- 18:21Speaker 1: landscape of college football, and I know you had some
- 18:24Speaker 1: of your best players that were kind of cherry-picked through
- 18:28Speaker 1: the portal and things of that nature. And it sounds
- 18:30Speaker 1: like you were able to go back and get some
- 18:35Speaker 1: other guys coming in. It sounds like commitment from the
- 18:37Speaker 1: administration and the athletic department and things of that nature.
- 18:40Speaker 1: How important is it to have that type of commitment
- 18:43Speaker 1: that you've spoken of and others have spoken of in
- 18:46Speaker 1: the past in terms of not only building a roster,
- 18:49Speaker 1: but in this day and age, maintaining a roster?
- 18:52Speaker 8: We all played against one of them, Devin McEwen, the
- 18:55Speaker 8: receiver that started on the other side of Smith. I
- 18:57Speaker 8: taught his mother at Jacksonville when I used to be
- 19:02Speaker 8: a teacher and a coach. That's painful, Rob, but I'm
- 19:06Speaker 8: thrilled for him. upped it, but it's not to the
- 19:10Speaker 8: level anywhere near where you guys are. Like I say
- 19:13Speaker 8: to everybody, everybody wants to talk about Texas and Georgia
- 19:16Speaker 8: and Ohio State. We can't even talk about that. We've
- 19:19Speaker 8: got to get in the level of Tulane. We've got
- 19:21Speaker 8: to get in the level of South Florida, Memphis. We've
- 19:24Speaker 8: got to conquer our league first as far as revenue sharing, fundraising.
- 19:28Speaker 8: We've got to get there first. If you can win
- 19:32Speaker 8: the AAC and get invited to the playoffs... Then you
- 19:35Speaker 8: can have the discussions about what's next, right? We're the
- 19:38Speaker 8: sixth largest city in the country. We've got a lot
- 19:40Speaker 8: of eyes on our football team. But winning is what
- 19:44Speaker 8: gets that going.
- 19:45Speaker 7: So I just.
- 19:47Speaker 8: I am grateful we have committed more, but we're far
- 19:51Speaker 8: from reaching Tulane, South Florida, Memphis, those guys, as far
- 19:55Speaker 8: as that. But I'm thrilled with my administration to move
- 19:59Speaker 8: me closer. It's a lot better than getting moved the
- 20:01Speaker 8: other way. We are moving in the right direction. We
- 20:04Speaker 8: knew when we got in the AAC, it moved the
- 20:08Speaker 8: goalposts on us quickly. But then when college football changed
- 20:13Speaker 8: so crazily, it really moved the goalposts on our administration
- 20:17Speaker 8: and me as well.
- 20:18Speaker 7: And we're just trying to keep up, Craig. We really are.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Well, and this is kind of along the lines of
- 20:22Speaker 1: the types of questions that I ask when we do
- 20:24Speaker 1: the panel discussion every year at coaching school.
- 20:26Speaker 2: But does the fact... that.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Tulane and James Madison both got in, and there were
- 20:32Speaker 1: two G6s to get into the playoff. And I understand
- 20:36Speaker 1: the P4s get an automatic bid now, and maybe that
- 20:39Speaker 1: makes the quotient a little more difficult to manage, but
- 20:42Speaker 1: does the fact that it has happened serve as proof
- 20:46Speaker 1: that that can happen, that.
- 20:48Speaker 3: The G6s can continue to state.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Their case, winning the proper amount of games and good
- 20:54Speaker 1: scheduling and all those kinds of things, to have a
- 20:55Speaker 1: shot to get into the playoff?
- 20:58Speaker 8: Well, it should here because we're the only team to
- 21:00Speaker 8: beat them. We beat them handily at home. What you
- 21:05Speaker 8: can do, you can jump up. But to be consistent
- 21:10Speaker 8: and play week in and week out, you need real depth,
- 21:14Speaker 8: which means you got to have a deeper understanding. financial
- 21:19Speaker 8: bucket to go to to get some backups. You just
- 21:21Speaker 8: can't have your starters. So yes, it should, and it is.
- 21:26Speaker 8: My administration knows that we're not as far away because
- 21:29Speaker 8: we've done it, but we've got to invest more, and
- 21:32Speaker 8: we know that. But But as far as comparing to
- 21:37Speaker 8: Texas and Ohio State, we're so far away from that.
- 21:42Speaker 8: When one of our kids gets to the portal and
- 21:43Speaker 8: he ends up, there's nothing we can do about that.
- 21:45Speaker 8: That number's just too large. We've got to fend off
- 21:48Speaker 8: the guys.
- 21:48Speaker 7: In our conference.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Jeff Traylor's with us right now. I've heard a lot
- 21:55Speaker 1: of coaches say this. Even Matt Brown, I remember, saying
- 21:57Speaker 1: this to me one time and saying it, that coaches
- 22:01Speaker 1: love every one of their teams.
- 22:03Speaker 2: They love them.
- 22:04Speaker 1: They don't necessarily like every one of their teams for
- 22:08Speaker 1: various and sundry reasons. The impression that I've always gotten
- 22:12Speaker 1: from you, going all the way back to Gilmer, but
- 22:15Speaker 1: certainly with UTSA, is that not only do you love
- 22:18Speaker 1: all your teams, you try to find something to really
- 22:21Speaker 1: like about your group. It's safe to say you have
- 22:25Speaker 1: that same feeling about this group. Not only that you
- 22:28Speaker 1: love them because you're around them and you work so
- 22:30Speaker 1: hard with them, but that there's genuine things to like
- 22:32Speaker 1: about this group.
- 22:34Speaker 8: Well, I've been a head coach 22 years, so the
- 22:36Speaker 8: way I look at it, I've had 22 children. What
- 22:40Speaker 8: I mean by that is I've got three personal children.
- 22:42Speaker 8: I've got Jordan, I've got Jake, I've got JC. I've
- 22:46Speaker 8: had 22 teams as a head coach. Each one of
- 22:50Speaker 8: my children.
- 22:52Speaker 8: They're very easy to love. Not all of them are
- 22:55Speaker 8: easy to like at times. One of my children is
- 22:59Speaker 8: easier to like. I won't name which one. One of
- 23:01Speaker 8: my other children is less easy to like. I won't
- 23:03Speaker 8: name which one. And one of my children is kind
- 23:06Speaker 8: of just right in the middle. They're all different. God
- 23:09Speaker 8: made each one of them uniquely different. It's no different
- 23:12Speaker 8: than your teams. I've had 22 of them. This team
- 23:16Speaker 8: is easy to like. We don't have as many great
- 23:19Speaker 8: players as we've had in the past. We're not as
- 23:21Speaker 8: talented as we've been. But man, all the details these
- 23:25Speaker 8: guys have handled, all the little bitty things these guys do.
- 23:29Speaker 8: Being down 17 to 7 on the road at your
- 23:32Speaker 8: rival in that heat is tremendous stress, pressure. Owen McCown
- 23:41Speaker 8: hadn't beaten them. They'd beaten us two years in a row.
- 23:45Speaker 8: The way they rallied. did not shock me because of
- 23:49Speaker 8: the people they've been since I started coaching.
- 23:51Speaker 7: Them in January.
- 23:55Speaker 1: By the way, do your three biological children know which
- 23:57Speaker 1: one that you like more than the other and like
- 24:00Speaker 1: lesser or in the middle?
- 24:01Speaker 3: Do they have an inkling even though you haven't told them?
- 24:04Speaker 8: Well, it's a moving target. They each move up and
- 24:07Speaker 8: down at times. And I'm the bad cop always, and
- 24:11Speaker 8: my wife's always the good cop. I just pray that
- 24:15Speaker 8: Jordan's in Minnesota right now, and Jake's in Washington, and
- 24:18Speaker 8: Jake's in Manhattan, and that none of them are listening
- 24:20Speaker 8: to Crayways.
- 24:21Speaker 7: Radio right now.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I pray okay all right with that i'll move forward
- 24:27Speaker 1: then and ask you about oh i'm gonna come first
- 24:29Speaker 1: of all uh give me a little history lesson i
- 24:31Speaker 1: remember doing a uh i want to say it was
- 24:34Speaker 1: a state quarterfinal game i may be wrong about that
- 24:37Speaker 1: oh 1997 jacksonville texas city there was an amazing like
- 24:42Speaker 1: a 31 28 ball game and i think luke was
- 24:45Speaker 1: playing quarterback back then were you on danny longstaff at
- 24:47Speaker 1: that time.
- 24:48Speaker 8: That was actually Josh, Owen's father. That was 1997. I
- 24:53Speaker 8: was there from 93 to 2000. And it's the greatest
- 24:56Speaker 8: high school game I've ever been a part of. It's incredible.
- 24:59Speaker 8: And Josh played as good as I've ever seen him play.
- 25:02Speaker 8: And it was a joy to be on that team.
- 25:04Speaker 8: And I hate it for Danny because that was our
- 25:07Speaker 8: chance to win a state championship for Danny. Still one
- 25:09Speaker 8: of the best games I think he's ever coached. Rusty
- 25:13Speaker 8: Dowling beat us at Texas City. They went on to
- 25:15Speaker 8: win a state championship.
- 25:16Speaker 7: The next week. Yeah.
- 25:18Speaker 1: The other thing that I remember about that, Jeff, is
- 25:20Speaker 1: that Texas City had a kicker kick, I believe, about
- 25:23Speaker 1: a 51 or 53-yard field goal in the game, and
- 25:26Speaker 1: he kicked it toward the south end zone. And Cooter Robertson,
- 25:29Speaker 1: the old Southeast Texas radio legend who had done Huntsville's play-by-play,
- 25:33Speaker 1: was doing color for me on the statewide broadcast.
- 25:36Speaker 2: And he was dead.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Serious when he said that, man, he kicked that long
- 25:39Speaker 1: enough it almost went to the walls unit. Because apparently
- 25:42Speaker 1: the walls unit of the Texas State Prison is not
- 25:45Speaker 1: far beyond the fence of that north end zone up
- 25:48Speaker 1: that way.
- 25:49Speaker 2: It was something else.
- 25:50Speaker 8: I'll give you another memory from that game. I was
- 25:54Speaker 8: the special teams coordinator. They got down and had a
- 25:57Speaker 8: chip shot field goal to win the game. We had
- 25:59Speaker 8: a block that we knew was going to get there.
- 26:02Speaker 8: Josh's cousin, Timothy Treywell, who's passed away since then, was
- 26:06Speaker 8: free right in front of the tee and was fixing
- 26:09Speaker 8: to block it. And that same great kicker He basically
- 26:12Speaker 8: hit like a sand wedge. He missed the ball, hit
- 26:16Speaker 8: the very bottom of the ball, and it went straight
- 26:18Speaker 8: up and just landed on the other side of the goalpost.
- 26:22Speaker 8: I was sure if he had hit it pure, Timothy
- 26:24Speaker 8: would have blocked that thing. So I'm going to get
- 26:26Speaker 8: over it one day, Craig.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Hey, listen, you play.
- 26:29Speaker 1: I know you don't have much time to play a
- 26:32Speaker 1: lot of golf, but you play enough golf to know, obviously,
- 26:34Speaker 1: you're hitting behind the ball in the bunker, hitting the sand.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Would that be the safe way to say this on
- 26:39Speaker 1: that field turf that they did it?
- 26:41Speaker 7: There's no doubt. And isn't it sad?
- 26:44Speaker 8: I can never remember to pick up my shoes or
- 26:46Speaker 8: where I put my keys or where I set my glass,
- 26:49Speaker 8: but I can remember a play from 1997 and the
- 26:52Speaker 8: details of that.
- 26:53Speaker 7: What is wrong with us? We have issues, Craig.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I know we do.
- 26:56Speaker 3: I know we do.
- 26:56Speaker 2: All right, so.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Let me pull it back on track here while we've
- 26:59Speaker 1: got a few more minutes. I asked you about this,
- 27:02Speaker 1: about Owen B and Josh, and Arch has been asked
- 27:06Speaker 1: about being from a quarterback family and all that.
- 27:09Speaker 3: And you've coached that. You get that.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Is there an intrinsic added element to having a quarterback
- 27:20Speaker 1: son of a quarterback and a coach and all that
- 27:22Speaker 1: sort of stuff leading your offense?
- 27:25Speaker 7: Oh, yeah. I mean, just silly things.
- 27:27Speaker 8: Like, for example, we had a playing team where he
- 27:31Speaker 8: got stepped on his toe, and he went hopping.
- 27:34Speaker 7: Like he was, you know, dead.
- 27:36Speaker 8: And I was watching him as his grandfather.
- 27:39Speaker 7: I know well, Pat.
- 27:40Speaker 8: I know all of his dad and his uncles and
- 27:43Speaker 8: his whole family. You know, limping is just not allowed
- 27:46Speaker 8: in the mechanics. But he's hobbling around like he's, you know, dead.
- 27:50Speaker 8: And I videoed it and I sent it to Josh
- 27:54Speaker 8: and his grandfather. And obviously I included Owen on there.
- 27:59Speaker 8: And it's just literally like, you know, be tough. I mean,
- 28:02Speaker 8: just good old fashioned. You know what they're getting told
- 28:06Speaker 8: at the house. You know what they're being told. You
- 28:09Speaker 8: know what they're, you know what I mean? Like, they're
- 28:11Speaker 8: being told, whatever the coach says, freaking do it. Be better.
- 28:15Speaker 8: Find a way to win the game. That's what the quarterbacks,
- 28:17Speaker 8: I mean, there's just none of this making us all
- 28:19Speaker 8: bad when you come from the genetics that, you know,
- 28:24Speaker 8: Arch has come from or Owen's come from.
- 28:28Speaker 1: With regard to your running back spot, like I said,
- 28:33Speaker 1: one of the recent state championship games was when Will
- 28:36Speaker 1: Henderson was in that backfield there. But Brandon Hyatt, the
- 28:39Speaker 1: big run for you there, the 25-yard run as well.
- 28:42Speaker 1: How about your running back stable and what you see
- 28:45Speaker 1: and what you like out of that group?
- 28:47Speaker 7: They're good kids.
- 28:48Speaker 8: They all support each other. Will goes first, and Brandon
- 28:52Speaker 8: comes in second. And then AP has a role on
- 28:54Speaker 8: our team as well. He had a touchdown in the
- 28:56Speaker 8: game as well. So they're very supportive. We're all about
- 29:01Speaker 8: the 2-1-0 triangle of toughness, our culture, our brand. And
- 29:05Speaker 8: I know Sarton does a great job of that as well.
- 29:07Speaker 8: But we made our own individual triangles this year. Each
- 29:10Speaker 8: kid has their own individual triangle. They're four H's, you know,
- 29:14Speaker 8: and I know Sarton does this too. The history, the hero,
- 29:16Speaker 8: the highlight, and the hardships. They have their why and
- 29:19Speaker 8: why they play, their Bible verse, their walk-up song, and
- 29:24Speaker 8: their response mechanism to when things go bad, all in
- 29:28Speaker 8: their triangle triangle. And all three of those kids are
- 29:31Speaker 8: really neat kids. And we allow each player to talk
- 29:34Speaker 8: to our team about their individual triangle.
- 29:36Speaker 7: Just a way for us to get to know each
- 29:37Speaker 7: other better and quicker.
- 29:38Speaker 8: Because the portal, you know, we had 40 this year
- 29:42Speaker 8: come to us in January, which is a very high number.
- 29:45Speaker 7: For us personally.
- 29:45Speaker 8: There are many schools at 90 and 85, so I'm
- 29:48Speaker 8: not complaining. I'm still 40 is high. And it's been
- 29:51Speaker 8: really cool. But Will and Brandon and APs, they did
- 29:55Speaker 8: three of the best triangles. They're three of the best
- 29:57Speaker 8: people on our team.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I got to ask you this because it sounds like,
- 30:02Speaker 1: you know, Sark likes to say, you know, the reason
- 30:04Speaker 1: the dinosaurs still aren't around is because they didn't adapt.
- 30:07Speaker 1: And it sounds like you adapted because I know where
- 30:12Speaker 1: you came from. And you didn't have a walk-up song
- 30:15Speaker 1: when you were playing Gilmer.
- 30:16Speaker 2: And when you.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Were coaching at Gilmer, I don't know how much of
- 30:19Speaker 1: that is, but it sounds like part of the adjustment
- 30:22Speaker 1: that you made as a coach was, Not only for
- 30:24Speaker 1: what you did in high school, but especially the college
- 30:27Speaker 1: level is adapting to the collegiate player environment.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Does that make sense?
- 30:33Speaker 8: Yeah, it just had to be faster. I give the
- 30:35Speaker 8: analogy like I'm from East Texas, right? So to barbecue
- 30:38Speaker 8: a brisket and ribs is like a real prideful thing
- 30:41Speaker 8: in East Texas. And, you know, a guy like me,
- 30:45Speaker 8: who's kind of a guy that I keep my staff
- 30:47Speaker 8: around for a long time. My players have never left me.
- 30:49Speaker 8: I've had the same coaches, same players my whole life.
- 30:52Speaker 8: And now so I was kind of a three day
- 30:54Speaker 8: brisket cooker. My barbecue, you know, was about three day process.
- 30:58Speaker 8: I was a slow cooker. And now I've got to
- 31:01Speaker 8: get my brisket to taste just as good, but I've
- 31:03Speaker 8: got to cook it in a microwave. So they're all
- 31:06Speaker 8: one-year teams now, Craig. So we've really expedited that process.
- 31:10Speaker 8: Everything we've done in August, we do in January now.
- 31:13Speaker 8: And the triangle is just a really good idea we
- 31:15Speaker 8: have for each player. And we take it with us.
- 31:18Speaker 8: It's in their lockers downstairs. It'll come with us to Austin.
- 31:21Speaker 8: We'll put the same triangle up in y'all's lockers down there.
- 31:23Speaker 7: It's just a way to expediate all of us getting
- 31:25Speaker 7: to know each other.
- 31:26Speaker 8: Really proud of our guys about how they've accepted that.
- 31:30Speaker 8: Not all 117 of them have bought into doing this
- 31:34Speaker 8: with a beautiful, beautiful smile on their face, but all
- 31:37Speaker 8: 117 of them do have their triangles done.
- 31:39Speaker 7: I know that.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I realize this is a loaded question, but when you
- 31:44Speaker 1: look at the digital cut-ups, what really crosses your mind
- 31:47Speaker 1: when you look at Texas?
- 31:50Speaker 8: They've evaluated very well. They're really big. They're really strong.
- 31:56Speaker 8: They've went and got some really special pieces. Those tailbacks
- 31:59Speaker 8: and those receivers are just your tight ends, your line.
- 32:02Speaker 8: There's really nowhere I can say there's a weak spot. Obviously,
- 32:06Speaker 8: Arch has gotten better. So, Arch is going to play
- 32:07Speaker 8: callers in the country. Will has brought a level of toughness.
- 32:10Speaker 8: Jeff has done an always great job with the special
- 32:13Speaker 8: teams with you guys.
- 32:14Speaker 7: So, I have nothing but the utmost respect. I've worked there.
- 32:18Speaker 8: Twelve of my guys on my staff either played at
- 32:20Speaker 8: Texas or coach to Texas or graduate from Texas. I mean,
- 32:24Speaker 8: hear me, 12. So we've got a ton of respect.
- 32:27Speaker 8: We know about that place and what it's about. So
- 32:30Speaker 8: there's nothing I can say negative. And Sark and I
- 32:34Speaker 8: are good friends. I like Sark.
- 32:35Speaker 7: So I'm rooting for him except for this Saturday.
- 32:39Speaker 1: The final thing I have for you here is also
- 32:42Speaker 1: the impression that I've got, and really just watching your
- 32:45Speaker 1: team and what you've described is– Whatever the environment is,
- 32:50Speaker 1: they're not really allowing the moment to get too big
- 32:54Speaker 1: for them. So you have a lot of confidence that
- 32:57Speaker 1: they can walk into the stadium there on Saturday night
- 33:01Speaker 1: and there's 100,000 and all that other stuff going on
- 33:04Speaker 1: and still feel comfortable in the environment in the moment.
- 33:08Speaker 1: And it's a matter of just going out and executing
- 33:10Speaker 1: at this point.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 33:12Speaker 8: Well, Texas State had an unbelievable home field advantage, but
- 33:15Speaker 8: what Chris Del Conte has done.
- 33:16Speaker 7: At DKR is on another level.
- 33:18Speaker 8: I mean, to say the least, it was nowhere near
- 33:20Speaker 8: that way when I was there. And he is just,
- 33:24Speaker 8: it is the most amazing home crowd ever. when we
- 33:28Speaker 8: played some great ones now. We played against some really
- 33:30Speaker 8: great teams in the SEC. There's no place like what
- 33:33Speaker 8: y'all have done now. I don't know how you get
- 33:36Speaker 8: a team prepared for that. We're doing the best we can, obviously,
- 33:39Speaker 8: but it's y'all's music, when y'all play it, how loud
- 33:43Speaker 8: y'all play it, all the things y'all do to distract
- 33:45Speaker 8: the opponents.
- 33:46Speaker 7: It's really on another level.
- 33:48Speaker 8: So much, much respect to the administration of the University
- 33:51Speaker 8: of Texas and what they've done behind the scenes.
- 33:54Speaker 7: And I hope my team can handle this.
- 33:55Speaker 8: This is the most daunting task we will have because
- 33:58Speaker 8: of the quality of coaching, the quality of the players,
- 34:00Speaker 8: and the quality of the atmosphere.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Well, you're a quality individual.
- 34:04Speaker 1: I always enjoy visiting with you wherever we are, whether
- 34:07Speaker 1: it's at coaching school or someplace else or obviously in
- 34:11Speaker 1: the stadium as well. And I'm indebted to you for
- 34:13Speaker 1: taking a few minutes to join us today.
- 34:15Speaker 8: I appreciate it, Jeff. Craig, it's easy to be good
- 34:18Speaker 8: to you. You've been good to a lot of people
- 34:20Speaker 8: for many, many years. And you treated me the same many,
- 34:24Speaker 8: many years ago as you do this day. And I'm
- 34:26Speaker 8: grateful for our friendship, man. God bless and birds up.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Thank you. See you Saturday.
- 34:30Speaker 1: That's Jeff Traylor, head coach of the UTSA Roadrunners. We'll
- 34:34Speaker 1: have more coming up when we continue on 13 Under
- 34:36Speaker 1: the Zones. Second hour of the program here on Sports
- 34:53Speaker 1: Radio AM 1300 The Zone. Glad to be with you
- 34:56Speaker 1: here on the Yacht Rock Wednesday.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Craig Way alongside the producer, Jake Herman. We thank you
- 35:01Speaker 2: for joining us.
- 35:01Speaker 1: By the way, I want to thank the people who
- 35:03Speaker 1: have texted in. And with the birthday greetings and stuff,
- 35:09Speaker 1: it is a birthday. And for those of you who
- 35:11Speaker 1: have asked, I've never been shy about telling how old
- 35:14Speaker 1: I was. Because you're only, you know, it's a number.
- 35:17Speaker 1: It's just however old. however you feel, and I'm in
- 35:21Speaker 1: good health, so other than a little bit of allergy
- 35:23Speaker 1: and upper respiratory stuff bother me, but that always happens
- 35:25Speaker 1: this time of year. So since we were quoting earlier
- 35:30Speaker 1: Emperor Palpatine from the Star Wars canon and that saga,
- 35:35Speaker 1: I feel it only to, when asked my age, to
- 35:39Speaker 1: simply reply by.
- 35:40Speaker 4: Saying, execute order number 66.
- 35:44Speaker 2: So there it is.
- 35:44Speaker 3: I don't even need to go get a drop for that.
- 35:46Speaker 3: We can just use that. That was perfect. Yeah.
- 35:51Speaker 2: So anyway.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Palpatine's timeless. I think my friends and I probably quoted
- 35:55Speaker 3: him more than anybody else in high school.
- 35:57Speaker 2: There's some great quotes.
- 35:58Speaker 3: Tell us something about us.
- 35:59Speaker 5: Yes.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Yes.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Your lack of faith has been your undoing. You know,
- 36:04Speaker 4: that sort of stuff.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Do it.
- 36:06Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 36:07Speaker 2: All of that stuff. So it's okay.
- 36:08Speaker 1: You can plug in Palpatine on a lot of stuff
- 36:12Speaker 1: like that.
- 36:13Speaker 2: And now... Skywalker, you will die. But he didn't. That's
- 36:20Speaker 2: the cool thing.
- 36:21Speaker 1: So anyway, so thanks again to the people who have
- 36:24Speaker 1: wished to send the birthday greetings, messages and texts and
- 36:28Speaker 1: all that other kind of stuff.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Glad, I'm always happy to accept those. Thank you very much.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Just waiting for I am the Senate.
- 36:35Speaker 4: Yes, I am the Senate. I will make it legal.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Some of that.
- 36:39Speaker 1: That's it.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. That is Lane Kiffin. Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Saying that to Prince William Mommy Ellen, you know, who
- 36:48Speaker 1: got served $ 550, 000. I have to say that I'm a
- 36:56Speaker 1: little dubious on the whole part of the business of
- 37:02Speaker 1: they're just wanting to LSU to account for the money
- 37:06Speaker 1: on something, something, you know, and not trying to get
- 37:08Speaker 1: it back from the players.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Come on. You wouldn't have served him if you didn't
- 37:11Speaker 2: want to get the money back from the player.
- 37:12Speaker 1: So I think, you know, so anyway, I think that's
- 37:19Speaker 1: just how I feel about it anyway.
- 37:20Speaker 2: So we'll see.
- 37:21Speaker 1: All right.
- 37:23Speaker 2: The other thing that I wanted to get to is
- 37:27Speaker 2: hearing from Longhorn.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Justin Cryer, the Longhorns linebacker, had himself a ball game
- 37:34Speaker 1: on Saturday night, especially down the stretch. And it was
- 37:37Speaker 1: something I asked him in the postgame as well. He
- 37:40Speaker 1: got banged up a little bit. Was he down on
- 37:43Speaker 1: the field.
- 37:43Speaker 9: At one point?
- 37:44Speaker 7: He was.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:45Speaker 1: And he came out for one play. I think no
- 37:47Speaker 1: more than two plays. I think only one play. And
- 37:49Speaker 1: then went back out there and made three big plays
- 37:52Speaker 1: for them. Tipped the passing complete and got two big
- 37:54Speaker 1: tackles as well. And he was like, hey, I felt okay.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Training staff's great. They told me I'm good to go
- 37:59Speaker 1: back in. I went in and boom, there it was.
- 38:02Speaker 8: So.
- 38:03Speaker 1: This week at the press conferences, Cryer was asked, first
- 38:07Speaker 1: of all, to describe his emotions that he was feeling.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Because we heard Sark talking about how fired up Cryer was.
- 38:13Speaker 1: And maybe you saw the sideline shot where he hugged.
- 38:15Speaker 1: He was hugging Justin right after the Eyes of Texas
- 38:18Speaker 1: was playing. He said Cryer was jumping all up and down, excited.
- 38:21Speaker 1: So he's asked to describe his emotions during that fourth
- 38:25Speaker 1: quarter comeback for Texas.
- 38:27Speaker 2: From the jump, we always felt like we were in it.
- 38:29Speaker 9: Going into halftime, obviously not being in the position that
- 38:32Speaker 9: we wanted to be in. But I give a lot
- 38:34Speaker 9: of credit to our guys. At no point in the
- 38:36Speaker 9: locker room where we had our heads hanging down or
- 38:39Speaker 9: do we ever feel like we were out of it.
- 38:40Speaker 9: A lot of the mistakes that were made were on us.
- 38:43Speaker 9: And they obviously made some plays because they had really
- 38:44Speaker 9: good players. But a lot of the things we looked
- 38:46Speaker 9: at were like, man, we get these things fixed, man.
- 38:48Speaker 9: We're still in it. And I try to keep the
- 38:52Speaker 9: things off of the deep end separated as far as
- 38:54Speaker 9: not worrying too much about what the offense is going
- 38:55Speaker 9: to do. Like, I know how hard those guys work. Like,
- 38:57Speaker 9: I knew they were going to figure it out. So
- 38:59Speaker 9: my focus was just on the defensive side, like make
- 39:01Speaker 9: sure we're good, make sure we're straight. So we got
- 39:02Speaker 9: to that fourth quarter, and that was like, that's like,
- 39:05Speaker 9: I love that type of football. Like, we got a
- 39:07Speaker 9: three and out, we went down to score. Got another
- 39:09Speaker 9: three and out, we went down to score again, right?
- 39:10Speaker 9: And then obviously a little trouble on that back, that
- 39:12Speaker 9: last drive, but we were able to get the stop,
- 39:16Speaker 9: and then we were able to force a missed field goal,
- 39:17Speaker 9: and we went down there and scored to put the
- 39:19Speaker 9: game away. But like, that's what I like to see.
- 39:20Speaker 9: That's the type of football, like, I feel like we
- 39:22Speaker 9: can do that from the jump, and we can do
- 39:24Speaker 9: that just consistently, There's nobody in the country that can
- 39:26Speaker 9: really mess with us. So I feel like that fourth quarter,
- 39:28Speaker 9: Brandon Fullwell that we had, that was good to watch.
- 39:31Speaker 9: And it felt like we had it there all along.
- 39:34Speaker 9: But to see it in action, to see it on full,
- 39:36Speaker 9: that was a good watch.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Next, he was asked about how he celebrated the win.
- 39:43Speaker 1: And how long did he allow himself to enjoy it?
- 39:46Speaker 9: My brother came to town, actually, so he was able
- 39:47Speaker 9: to fly in. I'm so appreciative of him just for
- 39:51Speaker 9: his support. Obviously, he has his own things going on,
- 39:53Speaker 9: but for him to be able to make the journey.
- 39:56Speaker 9: So I spent the last night with him. We were
- 39:57Speaker 9: just talking and just talking about the experience because he
- 40:00Speaker 9: was able to come to my biggest game last year
- 40:02Speaker 9: and be able to make the biggest one this year. Yeah,
- 40:05Speaker 9: I was spending time with him, spending time with my family.
- 40:08Speaker 9: We got yesterday and got to enjoy it, and then
- 40:10Speaker 9: today we got in the office and there were a
- 40:12Speaker 9: lot of things that needed to be corrected. So we
- 40:14Speaker 9: got brought back down to earth, especially when we got
- 40:16Speaker 9: Coach Muschamp in there.
- 40:17Speaker 2: He let us know.
- 40:19Speaker 9: But we got to know we have to correct him.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, that's one thing.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and speaking of Muschamp, as celebratory as everything was, how.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Was the halftime what was that like.
- 40:35Speaker 9: Yeah i mean it was it's the same thing i
- 40:37Speaker 9: said earlier like we we always knew we were in
- 40:38Speaker 9: it and a lot of it he said it was
- 40:39Speaker 9: just on us like it wasn't the um you know
- 40:43Speaker 9: they made some plays again but he was telling me
- 40:45Speaker 9: if we could just clean up what we got going
- 40:46Speaker 9: on like we'll be all right you know i mean
- 40:48Speaker 9: so we come out the halftime we knew they were
- 40:49Speaker 9: going to run the ball they were going to try
- 40:51Speaker 9: and control the clock um so it was on us
- 40:53Speaker 9: like we knew what they were going to come out
- 40:54Speaker 9: there and do so uh we we knew uh what
- 40:56Speaker 9: time it was so and again like again he said
- 40:58Speaker 9: don't worry about offense that they're going to figure it
- 41:00Speaker 9: out but we had to focus on ourselves and We
- 41:01Speaker 9: just go out there and just play hard.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Cryer, of course, was a, you know, a player at
- 41:09Speaker 1: Florida State. He transferred in from Florida State. So he's
- 41:11Speaker 1: played in some big games. And so was this like
- 41:14Speaker 1: any other games he'd been a part of?
- 41:17Speaker 9: I've been a part of some pretty back-and-forth games. I
- 41:19Speaker 9: never think I've been a part of anything like that drastic. But, again,
- 41:23Speaker 9: I think our poise and composure probably will let it
- 41:26Speaker 9: live the way for us. And I think Coach said
- 41:29Speaker 9: it best, like a lot of teams that without– composure
- 41:31Speaker 9: and poise probably melted during that time so um i
- 41:34Speaker 9: think the guys did a good job of just like
- 41:35Speaker 9: holding together not really like letting um letting the the
- 41:40Speaker 9: the moment get to us you know i mean because
- 41:41Speaker 9: if you look at the score i think i said
- 41:43Speaker 9: in my interview after the game if you look at
- 41:44Speaker 9: the score we're down 20 to half time like it
- 41:45Speaker 9: looks pretty daunting like if you try and think of
- 41:47Speaker 9: it like man we have to come back all the
- 41:48Speaker 9: way from 20 points so uh coach started said before
- 41:50Speaker 9: we went back out there man just one play at
- 41:51Speaker 9: a time and it's pretty cliche everyone in the country
- 41:53Speaker 9: says it but like that's honestly how you have to
- 41:55Speaker 9: look at these things because You can't make it all.
- 41:57Speaker 9: You can't get one play that gets you back in
- 41:59Speaker 9: the game like that. So, again, it was just an
- 42:01Speaker 9: operation of getting it back one play at a time. Because,
- 42:03Speaker 9: you know, with the schedule that we got going on,
- 42:04Speaker 9: there's going to be a lot of games where we're
- 42:06Speaker 9: going to be in a dogfight. And, you know, I mean,
- 42:08Speaker 9: we have to be prepared for that. So I think
- 42:09Speaker 9: it was a good opportunity for us to show our
- 42:11Speaker 9: resolve and for us to go out there and just
- 42:13Speaker 9: stay committed to the cause. And we were able to
- 42:15Speaker 9: pull out the win.
- 42:18Speaker 1: We'll hear some more from Justin Cryer coming up next hour.
- 42:23Speaker 1: But we're going to shift our focus to the Nationals.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Football League, in specific, the two teams from the state
- 42:30Speaker 1: of Texas who are trying to pick up the pieces
- 42:32Speaker 1: and get back to work, both suffering disheartening losses in
- 42:35Speaker 1: different styles. Obviously, the Texans were standing toe-to-toe. They were
- 42:40Speaker 1: down two scores. They were up in the ballgame, down again,
- 42:42Speaker 1: driving for.
- 42:43Speaker 2: The winning score, and then they got away from them.
- 42:46Speaker 1: And then, of course, the Cowboys dug themselves a hole,
- 42:52Speaker 1: got back to it. You know, managed to get it even,
- 42:55Speaker 1: then gave up the touchdown before the half, and then
- 42:58Speaker 1: only had two possessions, one in the third quarter and
- 43:00Speaker 1: one in the fourth quarter. So we're going to hear
- 43:01Speaker 1: from Brian Schottenheimer, and we're going to hear from D'Amico Ryans.
- 43:05Speaker 1: That's up next when we continue on 13 Under the
- 43:07Speaker 1: Zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Gotta love the... use of cowbell in this song, right?
- 43:21Speaker 3: This was nowhere in our cowbell contest last year.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and it should have been. It really should have been.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Because it's very present. You're Out to Lose by Pablo
- 43:31Speaker 1: Cruz on a Yacht Rock Wednesday, which brings us to
- 43:33Speaker 1: the Cowboys and Texans. I know that sounds a little cheeky.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Let me first start off by saying there's some highlight
- 43:42Speaker 1: games in week number two of the season. Starting tomorrow night,
- 43:46Speaker 1: Lions and Bills, I think. You know, could be a
- 43:50Speaker 1: real corker for those two. Buffalo dedicating, I guess, christening
- 43:56Speaker 1: their brand new stadium. Even though hearing Josh Allen talk
- 43:59Speaker 1: about it, he said, yeah, we practice in it.
- 44:01Speaker 2: We've been in it.
- 44:02Speaker 1: So it's not like it's completely, you know, brand new
- 44:08Speaker 1: and unheard of to us.
- 44:09Speaker 2: We've been in it. We have some familiarity with the facility.
- 44:12Speaker 3: Well, unheard of in today's NFL, though, to build a
- 44:15Speaker 3: new stadium outdoors. I mean, if you look at what
- 44:18Speaker 3: Washington's looking at doing, now what the Chiefs are looking
- 44:21Speaker 3: at doing, Vegas moving indoors. It's sweeping across the league now,
- 44:25Speaker 3: and I know people that feel different ways about it.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I would just say the further north you go
- 44:32Speaker 1: and the further south you go, right?
- 44:33Speaker 2: It would be like that.
- 44:35Speaker 1: The Dolphins don't have a dome stadium, but they have that.
- 44:38Speaker 2: Covered thing at Hard Rock.
- 44:39Speaker 4: I guess it is.
- 44:40Speaker 3: You just don't want it to become so sterile to
- 44:41Speaker 3: where weather's not a factor, but you also know that
- 44:44Speaker 3: it's a better product when you only have a few
- 44:47Speaker 3: snow games rather than so many.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Other games that I'd taken note of would be Vikings
- 44:57Speaker 1: and Bears.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Both of those teams starting 1-0.
- 45:02Speaker 1: The Patriots 0-1-1, and they've got the Steelers at home,
- 45:05Speaker 1: the surprising Steelers who got past the Falcons there. Is
- 45:10Speaker 1: it possible Aaron Rodgers could go 2-0 in his final season?
- 45:14Speaker 3: I'll save you some time there.
- 45:15Speaker 8: No.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Okay. You're expecting the Patriots to bounce back.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I am.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Okay. Packers and Jets. Who would have thought the Packers
- 45:22Speaker 1: would be 0-1 and the Jets 1-0?
- 45:24Speaker 7: Right?
- 45:25Speaker 3: I heard something this morning on a different program. The
- 45:27Speaker 3: Packers are basically 500 in games where they have a
- 45:33Speaker 3: fourth quarter lead. Over the last year or so. The
- 45:36Speaker 3: rest of the league is winning those games at about 90%.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:39Speaker 3: Unbelievable.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Here's another one. Would you believe Raiders 1-0, Chargers 0-1? Yeah,
- 45:45Speaker 1: I wouldn't have believed that.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Especially knowing that the Chargers played the Arizona Cardinals with
- 45:50Speaker 3: a win total at a cool 3.5 last week.
- 45:52Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 45:53Speaker 1: And, of course, the Monday night game. Well, also Colts 0-1,
- 45:57Speaker 1: Chiefs 1-0. And then the Monday night game. Who would
- 46:00Speaker 1: have believed Giants 1-0, Rams 0-1?
- 46:02Speaker 3: Yeah, well, look, that Australia game, I'm throwing it away.
- 46:05Speaker 3: If there's any team I'm giving a week one pass to,
- 46:08Speaker 3: it's the Rams.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Well, they certainly threw it away. Anyway, but that's another
- 46:11Speaker 2: story there.
- 46:12Speaker 1: All right, let's say we know the Cowboys are playing
- 46:16Speaker 1: Jake's Commanders.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Yeah, big one.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Both teams 0-1.
- 46:18Speaker 1: I don't know if you heard, Craig, teams that start 0-2.
- 46:21Speaker 1: So it's three teams, three teams. That have done it
- 46:28Speaker 1: all time. Can you name the three teams that have
- 46:30Speaker 1: done it? That have started 0-2 and won a Super Bowl?
- 46:32Speaker 8: Yep.
- 46:33Speaker 1: It's only happened three times. And it's all, they were
- 46:37Speaker 1: all in 16 game seasons. So that's something to keep
- 46:40Speaker 1: in mind. This is a 17 game season.
- 46:41Speaker 3: I don't think I can name them.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Well, I can tell you two off the top of
- 46:47Speaker 1: my head. I'm trying to remember the other one. Two
- 46:51Speaker 1: of them, the 93 Cowboys, when Emmitt Smith was holding out. Erwin, too,
- 46:56Speaker 1: and then Jimmy Johnson getting into Jerry's kitchen and saying,
- 46:59Speaker 1: you got to get him in here. Got him in here,
- 47:00Speaker 1: and then they turned it on from there, and they
- 47:02Speaker 1: went on, and they won their second of the back-to-back
- 47:05Speaker 1: Super Bowls. Giants, I believe, in 07, when the Patriots
- 47:11Speaker 1: were 18-0, or, well, yeah, they were going for 19-0.
- 47:15Speaker 3: As the New York Post famously said, 18 and no.
- 47:18Speaker 2: And no. And then the third one. I'm trying to
- 47:21Speaker 2: remember who the third one was.
- 47:22Speaker 3: You're warm already.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Would that have been the, let's see. Was it the
- 47:32Speaker 1: Patriots one year? No, or the Giants in 11. It
- 47:35Speaker 1: was the Patriots one year.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 3: And the year was?
- 47:38Speaker 4: I don't remember.
- 47:40Speaker 3: You should be able to remember it, though. It's based
- 47:43Speaker 3: on a specific kind of event in Patriot history. It's
- 47:47Speaker 3: in the 2000s. So that narrows it down for you.
- 47:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Uh Gosh Oh When they beat the Rams In the
- 47:55Speaker 1: Super Bowl Yeah And before The one season When they
- 47:58Speaker 1: started 0-2 With Bledsoe Yeah Yeah Right Yeah And then
- 48:03Speaker 1: of course Tom Brady Steps in and the rest is history.
- 48:06Speaker 4: Okay.
- 48:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Thanks for that reminder.
- 48:08Speaker 3: I'm glad you blocked it out, though. Yeah.
- 48:10Speaker 4: Happy birthday.
- 48:10Speaker 1: I had moved on. Yeah. That might just be age
- 48:14Speaker 1: doing that. Some natural blocking going on there. But as
- 48:18Speaker 1: far as the Cowboys are concerned, trying to turn it around,
- 48:21Speaker 1: one thing they're having to deal with is injuries again.
- 48:23Speaker 1: And you just hate it for DeMarvian Overshawn. the hamstring thing,
- 48:28Speaker 1: and he's just struggling to stay healthy. And Brian Schottenheimer
- 48:32Speaker 1: was asked, what are his options to replace D-Mo?
- 48:35Speaker 6: We got to move these guys around a little bit.
- 48:37Speaker 6: You know, D-Winter's obviously most experienced of the group. You know,
- 48:41Speaker 6: Jay Sean got some valuable play time yesterday, did some
- 48:46Speaker 6: good things, did some things that he needs to improve on.
- 48:48Speaker 6: You know, Shamar James is a valued member of our
- 48:51Speaker 6: football team, very smart, very bright. And then, you know,
- 48:55Speaker 6: obviously we've got some guys on practice squad that we've
- 48:58Speaker 6: got elevations. You know, Curtis Robinson is a veteran. He's
- 49:01Speaker 6: played a lot of football in this league as well.
- 49:02Speaker 6: And then Justin Barron's a guy we have a lot
- 49:04Speaker 6: of high expectations for.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Okay. And I should point out, Jay Sean Barham did
- 49:12Speaker 1: show some things in there. He had a couple of
- 49:13Speaker 1: learning things too, but he also showed that aggressiveness they
- 49:16Speaker 1: were looking for there.
- 49:18Speaker 2: Here's a fair question.
- 49:19Speaker 1: I think, even though Shottie might not have thought it
- 49:22Speaker 1: was fair, based on what happened last year.
- 49:26Speaker 3: And this was also based on a Stephen Jones comment
- 49:28Speaker 3: as we're setting this question up here.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Were the defensive expectations of this team unrealistic?
- 49:35Speaker 6: What I would say is, you know, look, our standard,
- 49:38Speaker 6: our expectations, Clarence, is high. You stand up here and
- 49:41Speaker 6: you talk about winning Super Bowls and it doesn't change
- 49:44Speaker 6: because we lost the game. That's what our goals are.
- 49:47Speaker 6: There's some youth on defense. There's some inexperience on defense.
- 49:52Speaker 6: Christian Parker, I remember my first game or second game
- 49:55Speaker 6: actually as a coordinator. It's kind of an interesting story,
- 49:58Speaker 6: but we were playing New England. I was with the
- 50:01Speaker 6: Jets and Bill Belichick, defense, 3-4, they were kicking our
- 50:08Speaker 6: butts in the first half.
- 50:08Speaker 3: I mean, just kicking our butts.
- 50:10Speaker 6: And I went in halftime, I made some of the
- 50:12Speaker 6: greatest changes you've ever seen.
- 50:14Speaker 2: I really did.
- 50:16Speaker 6: I mean, I had all the three, four runs. I
- 50:18Speaker 6: was ready to go. And sure enough, what did Bill
- 50:20Speaker 6: Belichick do? He played 4-3. And they shoved it up our,
- 50:24Speaker 6: I swore last night, so I'm not going to swear
- 50:25Speaker 6: again today. But, you know, it's part of the learning curve,
- 50:30Speaker 6: you know. And we have to get better, but we're
- 50:33Speaker 6: going to make mistakes. You know, I see this defense
- 50:37Speaker 6: every day, and we did not perform well enough as
- 50:40Speaker 6: a football team last night coaching and playing. It's certainly
- 50:42Speaker 6: not the standard, but I'm also not ready to say
- 50:45Speaker 6: the expectations for where we think we're going to get
- 50:48Speaker 6: to as a defense and as a football team are
- 50:52Speaker 6: not accurate.
- 50:55Speaker 1: So along those lines about whether those expectations were unrealistic,
- 51:02Speaker 1: Does it now? And I've never been a big fan
- 51:05Speaker 1: of reporters asking a coach, do you second guess dot, dot, dot?
- 51:13Speaker 1: Because that's in the category of when did you stop
- 51:16Speaker 1: beating your wife? You know, that question. You know, it's
- 51:18Speaker 1: a no-win scenario. It's a no-win answer. Do you second guess? Nevertheless,
- 51:25Speaker 1: shot he was asked. Is he second guessing his lack
- 51:29Speaker 1: of preseason time that he had his first team defense
- 51:32Speaker 1: out there?
- 51:33Speaker 5: Not really.
- 51:33Speaker 6: I mean, it's a philosophy and it's a catch 22, man.
- 51:36Speaker 6: You know, if you put a player out there and
- 51:38Speaker 6: all of a sudden someone comes and they get dinged
- 51:40Speaker 6: up and they're out for the year, you know, you're
- 51:42Speaker 6: damned if you do, you're damned if you don't. I
- 51:44Speaker 6: felt really, really good about our work in training camp.
- 51:48Speaker 6: I felt really good about the work in the two joints.
- 51:50Speaker 6: There was plenty of padded work. We just, you know,
- 51:54Speaker 6: we did not, you know, perform to the level that
- 51:56Speaker 6: we should perform to last night.
- 51:58Speaker 3: And we own that.
- 52:00Speaker 6: I'm always going to be, you know, first one off
- 52:02Speaker 6: the bus and taking responsibility and accountability for that. But
- 52:06Speaker 6: we'll get back to work. And we got the right
- 52:08Speaker 6: guys in this locker room to fix it.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Next up, in continuing with talking about the defense, he
- 52:16Speaker 1: was asked if the third down struggles that they've had
- 52:19Speaker 1: can be primarily attributed to the youth.
- 52:22Speaker 2: Of this team.
- 52:24Speaker 6: Couple different things i think it's you know a little
- 52:26Speaker 6: bit of they made them some plays you know you
- 52:29Speaker 6: got to give likely i mean you know here's a
- 52:31Speaker 6: guy that i followed a little bit when he's in
- 52:32Speaker 6: baltimore but i mean wow what a great player what
- 52:35Speaker 6: a nice addition to their deal he hits a deep
- 52:37Speaker 6: cross against pj lock um you know made some some
- 52:41Speaker 6: really good plays but you know i think it's just
- 52:43Speaker 6: us finishing you know and if it's a pass rush
- 52:46Speaker 6: we forced a third nine uh we forced us we
- 52:49Speaker 6: had a second and 16 in that four minute drive
- 52:51Speaker 6: we're trying to get the ball back and they popped
- 52:52Speaker 6: an explosive run It's a bad time for that to happen.
- 52:55Speaker 6: But at the end of the day, I think it
- 52:56Speaker 6: just comes down to team defense and being able to
- 52:59Speaker 6: get off the field.
- 53:00Speaker 3: And that's sometimes they make plays too.
- 53:02Speaker 6: But we certainly felt like there were some ops where
- 53:04Speaker 6: we had a chance to get off the field and
- 53:06Speaker 6: we didn't.
- 53:07Speaker 1: And with the defense having to deal with Jackson Dart,
- 53:10Speaker 1: being able to extend plays and on rollouts and being
- 53:13Speaker 1: able to do that. And is there a concern about that,
- 53:17Speaker 1: having to deal with Jayden Daniels this week on that?
- 53:19Speaker 6: Yeah, I think that's probably the biggest thing I'm, you know,
- 53:23Speaker 6: disappointed in looking back at the film you know it's
- 53:25Speaker 6: always easier for me to talk about the game you
- 53:27Speaker 6: know today Todd when I've seen it and watched it
- 53:30Speaker 6: and sat with the coaches and but to lose contain
- 53:33Speaker 6: on a guy like Jackson that's that it's that athletic
- 53:36Speaker 6: you know and it was multiple guys at multiple times
- 53:38Speaker 6: heck one was just a fake toss naked where they
- 53:41Speaker 6: were trying to run a tight end on a shallow
- 53:43Speaker 6: cross and the end closed and he just went taking
- 53:46Speaker 6: off running and um you know we got Jaden this
- 53:50Speaker 6: week and then you guys maybe have heard of Lamar
- 53:52Speaker 6: Jackson coming in a couple weeks so we certainly have
- 53:56Speaker 6: to get better with our discipline the other thing that
- 53:58Speaker 6: I will say that you know looking at the game
- 54:01Speaker 6: that we need to be better in is our communication
- 54:03Speaker 6: on defense communication is something that you know we pride
- 54:07Speaker 6: ourselves in and started day one communication is two parts
- 54:11Speaker 6: it's the person that gives it and the person that
- 54:14Speaker 6: receives it has to acknowledge it and so Some of
- 54:17Speaker 6: the things that we did in the red zone, they're late,
- 54:19Speaker 6: you know, where we didn't have anybody accounting for Singleton,
- 54:22Speaker 6: who's a pretty dynamic player.
- 54:23Speaker 3: Those were communication issues.
- 54:25Speaker 6: And, you know, that can't happen because those are self-inflicted
- 54:29Speaker 6: wounds that get you beat. And those are self-inflicted wounds
- 54:31Speaker 6: that we have to be better at coaching them and
- 54:34Speaker 6: then communicating on the field with the players.
- 54:37Speaker 1: And one more thing about the penalties. Penalties had been
- 54:41Speaker 1: an issue. So how does Schottenheimer and his staff make
- 54:45Speaker 1: sure that the penalties of last week are not repeated
- 54:49Speaker 1: this week?
- 54:50Speaker 6: The overshown thing is a full speed decision that he's
- 54:53Speaker 6: got to make. You know, we certainly talk about, you know, that. But,
- 54:56Speaker 6: you know, Javante knows better. I mean, here's a guy
- 54:58Speaker 6: that is maybe the, you know, most professional guy in
- 55:04Speaker 6: the world. And it's very uncharacteristic for him to do that.
- 55:07Speaker 6: And you got to understand, we don't ever want those.
- 55:10Speaker 6: But you certainly don't want those in a one score game.
- 55:13Speaker 6: And we get a chance, we're going for two. I mean,
- 55:15Speaker 6: we're gonna go make it a six-point game with whatever
- 55:17Speaker 6: five and a half minutes left. But no one's more
- 55:20Speaker 6: sick about that than Javante. He was beating himself about
- 55:24Speaker 6: it last night. And at the end of the day,
- 55:27Speaker 6: as I look back in this game, the game should
- 55:29Speaker 6: have been seven to seven at the end of the
- 55:30Speaker 6: first half.
- 55:31Speaker 3: It was a slugfest. Dak's gotta throw the ball away.
- 55:34Speaker 6: There's some play calls there I could have had that
- 55:36Speaker 6: would have been better in that situation.
- 55:38Speaker 3: They take it, they score.
- 55:40Speaker 6: Make it 14-7, and then we battle back just like
- 55:43Speaker 6: you do in most NFL games.
- 55:44Speaker 3: And we make it a one-score game with five minutes
- 55:46Speaker 3: to go.
- 55:47Speaker 6: And, you know, I bet on our defense being able
- 55:50Speaker 6: to give us the ball back and give us a chance.
- 55:53Speaker 1: So the Cowboys have the Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon.
- 55:57Speaker 1: So meanwhile, the Texans trying to bounce back. They have
- 55:59Speaker 1: the Cincinnati Bengals. Not an easy thing to deal with there.
- 56:04Speaker 1: And D'Amico Ryans was asked, How does his team prevent
- 56:09Speaker 1: the types of explosive plays that Buffalo was able to
- 56:13Speaker 1: execute in getting their win over Houston?
- 56:16Speaker 10: To eliminate explosive plays, it starts by simply guys doing
- 56:19Speaker 10: their job, being where they're supposed to be, whether it's
- 56:23Speaker 10: coverage leverage or being outside, being inside, being on top,
- 56:27Speaker 10: where we're supposed to be, how we're rushing, our rush plan,
- 56:30Speaker 10: also all that ties in together. And We gave up,
- 56:35Speaker 10: I think it was 11 or 12 explosive plays. And
- 56:39Speaker 10: when you give up that many plays, you're going to
- 56:42Speaker 10: give up points. So we got to do a much
- 56:45Speaker 10: better job of just being where we're supposed to be,
- 56:48Speaker 10: finishing how we're supposed to finish.
- 56:51Speaker 1: If there's one thing you always hear coaches talk about,
- 56:53Speaker 1: and D'Amico Ryan's is right there with so many others,
- 56:57Speaker 1: it's those three words. I know they sound cliched and
- 57:01Speaker 1: coaches will say to you, I know this sounds like
- 57:03Speaker 1: a cliche, but we tell them to, and here's the
- 57:06Speaker 1: three words, trust the process, the process of trying to
- 57:10Speaker 1: get better and not expecting the instant gratification or the
- 57:13Speaker 1: instant result, but to trust the process of what they're
- 57:16Speaker 1: being coached and told to do and execute. So fair
- 57:21Speaker 1: question asked to Miko, were the guys not trusting the process?
- 57:25Speaker 10: You definitely have to trust the process when it just comes.
- 57:28Speaker 3: To doing what we're supposed to do.
- 57:32Speaker 10: Granted, the Bills, they made some plays and made some
- 57:35Speaker 10: good catches, but we're not where we're supposed to be.
- 57:38Speaker 10: We're going to make it look even better. So it
- 57:41Speaker 10: always starts with us about just doing the things that
- 57:44Speaker 10: you're supposed to do to help you win the game.
- 57:46Speaker 1: Like finishing the tackling process, and there was some poor
- 57:50Speaker 1: tackling or lack of tackling that really hurt them against Buffalo.
- 57:53Speaker 10: Tackling, it all starts with the mindset, right? How are
- 57:56Speaker 10: you showing up with a physical mindset to put your
- 57:59Speaker 10: pads on the guy, wrap, squeeze, and bring the guy
- 58:02Speaker 10: down to the ground. So it starts there. We were
- 58:06Speaker 10: in position, just got to finish him.
- 58:08Speaker 7: Okay.
- 58:08Speaker 1: All right. And then D'Amico Ryans was asked about questions
- 58:13Speaker 1: about scheme. Because if there's one thing that's a very
- 58:17Speaker 1: complimentary thing about Ryans is, is how His defensive schemes
- 58:23Speaker 1: are drawn up. After all, they're supposedly as good, if
- 58:27Speaker 1: not better, than any defense in the league, although last
- 58:29Speaker 1: Sunday didn't necessarily show up with the explosive plays and
- 58:32Speaker 1: things like that. But by and large, they're difficult. for
- 58:37Speaker 1: opposing offenses to plan for. Same thing with the Texans trying,
- 58:42Speaker 1: when they go up against good defense, to pick up
- 58:45Speaker 1: the schemes. And D'Amico was asked about this whole process.
- 58:47Speaker 10: When it comes to our defense and how we play,
- 58:50Speaker 10: whoever is in the scheme, whether it's rookies or veterans
- 58:53Speaker 10: coming into our scheme, it's nothing new that we're doing
- 58:57Speaker 10: for us. Things we've been doing since OTAs and training camp.
- 59:01Speaker 10: So guys just have to do their job. There's no
- 59:04Speaker 10: magical elixir that it takes to play defense for us.
- 59:08Speaker 10: It's just guys being accountable, being where they're supposed to be,
- 59:11Speaker 10: communicating the proper way, and just being on the same page.
- 59:14Speaker 3: Makes sense.
- 59:15Speaker 2: Makes a lot of sense there. So they'll try to
- 59:18Speaker 2: turn that around. And it's tough.
- 59:20Speaker 1: You think about the Texans having to open back-to-back games
- 59:25Speaker 1: for against two teams that are either picked to win
- 59:29Speaker 1: their division or to compete in their division.
- 59:32Speaker 2: I think you picked Baltimore to win the AFC North,
- 59:34Speaker 2: didn't you?
- 59:35Speaker 3: Yes, I did.
- 59:35Speaker 2: And I went with the Bengals.
- 59:37Speaker 1: And both of those teams, the— The Ravens and the
- 59:43Speaker 1: Bengals were winners last week.
- 59:45Speaker 3: Both look good. I was impressed with the Bengals D
- 59:48Speaker 3: and obviously Baltimore rolled Indianapolis.
- 59:50Speaker 1: And you were asking the question that you asked me
- 59:53Speaker 1: was what about that Bengals offensive line?
- 59:55Speaker 3: Remember, I think Baltimore to win the Superbowl. So I'm
- 59:57Speaker 3: really high on that.
- 59:58Speaker 2: That's right.
- 59:59Speaker 1: And I picked Buffalo to win it. But, uh, uh,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: What were your impressions of Cincinnati's offensive line? He seemed
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: to get Burrow enough time to get what he had
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: to get done done.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: Yeah, and they played complimentary football. I mean, they kept
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: the Bucs out of obvious pass rushing situations because their
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: defense created the early turnover. So I'm going to give
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: the Bengals O-line an A, but also an incomplete because
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: we haven't seen them under a lot of strain yet.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see how they operate against this Texans defense
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: this week. And the Texans know this is an important game.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: You definitely don't want to go 0-2, not only because
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: of that old saw that we were just talking about,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: about teams 0-2 not winning the Super Bowl. And I
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: don't think it completely applies now because it's a 17-game schedule,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: not a 16-game schedule.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: So I think that's important to keep in mind.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: Still in all, you dropped 0-2 in your division last
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: you could be in for a very difficult time, even
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: though the Titans look pretty feckless. They might have put together,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: think about it, other, I'm trying to think, who had
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: a worse.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Opening game than the Titans? The Rams were pretty stinko.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: That's against the 49ers.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: That was against the 49ers, not the Jets. And then
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: you factor in all the travel and all that kind
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: of stuff. Falcons were ineffective offensively against the Steelers. Panthers
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: scored some points and just gave up a boatload of them.
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: Well, you know how many offensive explosive plays the Titans
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: had last week?
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: Zero.
- 1:01:30Speaker 7: Exactly.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: And the Packers had a lead, but it just kind
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: of slipped away from them.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: The Bucs weren't real impressive.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Right. No, but they rallied. I mean, look, Baker put
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: the ball on the ground four times and they lost
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: by one score. So, I mean, if they take care
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: of it better, they'll be okay. Falcons are real bad.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: The Browns are the tonic for trying to get okay,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: and the Bucs have the Browns this week. Falcons, and
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: I don't know that I was expecting that, obviously. Their
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: problem is quarterback right now because they just don't have
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: healthy quarterbacks and they just can't execute against NFL caliber defense.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: I think the Falcons are going to pick in the
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: top five. I'm really, really low on them this season.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: They have the Panthers, who I think both of us
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: thought would probably win the NFC South, didn't we?
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: Did you pick it?
- 1:02:19Speaker 10: I did.
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: I did, too. Well, the NFC South, in classic fashion,
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: everybody started 0-1.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: The NFC South... is the American League West.
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: For baseball. It's right there.
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: I thought Bryce Young looked great, and I think this
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: is the year, like I said in our NFL season preview,
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: that he gets some respect. I think he turned a
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: corner late last year.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: We have more coming up.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: Stay with us here on a Yacht Rock Wednesday on
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: What you after?
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: Can't find it in my head. I'm gonna do things.
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: This is our last chance to touch each other's hearts.
- 1:03:11Speaker 7: Because anything lasts forever.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Another one of those guys who said definitely, he's a
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: definite that he would be on the Mount Rushmore of
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Yacht Rock for individual artists. If Michael McDonald is the godfather.
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: Kenny Loggins is his godfather.
- 1:03:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: He's the number two.
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: Two very unique but very Yacht Rock voices. Yeah.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: And they've worked together so often. This is it. Where
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: they combine on that. Which was for us OG since
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: this is a birthday for me. I can tell you
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: the old OG things. Late 70s, early 80s. NBC when
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: they had the college basketball package and in the NCAA tournament,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: instead of like the NCAA tournament stuff, theme stuff you
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: hear from CBS and the CBS family, you were hearing
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Kenny Loggins, this is it.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: That was it. So they have a lot of that.
- 1:04:16Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: I wanted to get to a couple other pro football
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: notes as well since we were talking with some pro football.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: First of all, a little jurisprudence.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Keenan Allen, speaking of guys long in the tooth, at
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: least in terms of player, he's 34, the wide receiver
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: of the Colts, formally charged this week with two misdemeanor
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: offenses stemming from that drunk driving arrest in downtown Indianapolis
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: last month. What is it about getting drunk in downtown Indianapolis,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Mark Sanchez? Oh, boy.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: And he's pleading, what, no contest on that?
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: And Keenan Allen arrested by Indianapolis police. on August 30th,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: was preliminarily charged. And then yesterday, prosecutors officially filed charges
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: of operating a vehicle with alcohol concentration equivalent to 0.15
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: or more and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: According to, to get this, according to a.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: Probable cause affidavit obtained by ESPN, Allen's blood alcohol level
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: was tested at.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: 224. That's really high.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: Yeah. That's why it triggered a more serious Class A
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: misdemeanor charge per Indiana law. Operating while intoxicated is considered
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: a Class C misdemeanor. According to the affidavit, an Indianapolis
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: police sergeant encountered Allen at 1 a.m. after conducting a
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: traffic investigation at the same intersection. Allen, according to the report,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: parked in a no-parking zone, prompting the officer to come
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: up to him. Hey, you know, you're parked in a
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: no-parking zone. The officer stated when he went to speak
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: with Allen and after Allen exited the vehicle, smelled a
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: strong odor of alcohol.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: You think so?
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: 0.224?
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: So then a lieutenant retrieved a portable breath test device
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: after Allen agreed to be tested. They said he was
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: initially short-winded and they were unable to get a reading
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: of And then at 1.22 a.m., they got the. 224.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: It was about to break the meter at that. Taken
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: into custody, transported to the Indianapolis Criminal Justice Center. Further
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: investigation done. A field sobriety test was conducted. Boy, you
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: wouldn't like to have seen that. According to officers, Allen
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: displayed multiple indications of intoxication. Missed multiple steps. When asked
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: to walk, heel to toe. That's hard enough to do sober.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Blood draw then happened, and they found very little blood
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: and a lot of alcohol.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: No, I mean, just, man, that's a mess.
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: And he played last week.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: And he played. So, we'll see what happens on that.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: We were talking about the Falcons quarterback situation.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: Cooper Rush ended up having to play.
- 1:07:17Speaker 6: And....
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: So, you know, as it stands, Kevin Stefanski said the
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: team is not sure who will be the quarterback on
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Sunday against the Panthers, but he's not ruling anybody out,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: whether it's to a tongue of Iowa, listed day-to-day, so
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: still unsure about that. All right, we will be back
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: to wrap up hour number two on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:07:49Speaker 10: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 1:07:51Speaker 10: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster, Craig Way.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Third and final hour here on the Yacht Rock Wednesday
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Dragway alongside
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: the producer, Jay Kerman. Again, thank you to all of
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: you who have texted in and those who have also
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: messaged me and texted me to wish me a happy birthday.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: I appreciate that. I know a lot of people get
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: their birthday off. I don't get weekends off, so why
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: should I get my birthday off, right?
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: On brand.
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: We have work to do. We have work to do.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: And we'll be recording Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark tonight.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Jackson Jeffcoat will be our special guest. He's going into
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: the Longhorn Hall of Honor this weekend. And so we'll
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: visit with Jackson to talk about that and his time
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: as a Longhorn and so much more coming up. Coming
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: up in a few minutes, we'll visit with Andy Everett,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: play-by-play voice of the UTSA Roadrunners.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: Get his thoughts. on this matchup between Texas and UTSA.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Before we get to that, from the Texas side of things,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: let's hear some more from Longhorn's transfer linebacker, Justin Cryer,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: who played so well for Texas in the win on
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Saturday night against Ohio State. So, Sark talked about that
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: there's still so many areas to clean up on the
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: defensive side, most notably third down defense, because Longhorn's have
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: been not good on third downs. In fact, last in
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: the SEC to start with. So, Cryer was asking, what
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: is the top priority for this defense right now?
- 1:09:29Speaker 9: Just cleaning things up. I really like how we play
- 1:09:31Speaker 9: in the low red. I feel like we did a
- 1:09:32Speaker 9: good job, especially with the sudden changes that were going on. Obviously,
- 1:09:34Speaker 9: you can't dictate what the offense does, so we were
- 1:09:36Speaker 9: able to go out there and play really good low-ranges
- 1:09:37Speaker 9: on defense. For me, personally, this is my personal thing,
- 1:09:40Speaker 9: we have to get off the field on third down.
- 1:09:41Speaker 9: We have to do a better job of that. Some
- 1:09:44Speaker 9: of it, they made a good play. Some of it
- 1:09:45Speaker 9: was on us, so My biggest thing going into this
- 1:09:47Speaker 9: week is, man, let's improve in that area. Let's be
- 1:09:50Speaker 9: all around just a better defense. Obviously, we never want
- 1:09:53Speaker 9: to give the other team anything. If they're going to
- 1:09:57Speaker 9: make explosive plays, let them make it on their own.
- 1:09:58Speaker 9: You don't want to give them any just free-access throws
- 1:10:02Speaker 9: or have busts on our part that leads to big plays.
- 1:10:04Speaker 9: So my thing, especially, and Coach must let us know
- 1:10:08Speaker 9: in the meeting today, that we have to better on
- 1:10:09Speaker 9: third down, and we're going to tighten up the ship
- 1:10:11Speaker 9: a little more.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: Cryer was then asked about the momentum and teams talk
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: about how they can feel that momentum start to shift
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: and how it makes a real big difference. So did
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: he feel it? Did the defense feel it? And when
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: did they feel the momentum shift in this game?
- 1:10:31Speaker 9: That second three and out that we got, I think
- 1:10:34Speaker 9: it was Grayson's. I'm not entirely sure if it was
- 1:10:36Speaker 9: Grayson's PB on the sideline, but I felt it, especially
- 1:10:40Speaker 9: because after we scored that first time, all right, we're good, right?
- 1:10:42Speaker 9: We brought back 23-10. I was like, all right, we're good. Like,
- 1:10:46Speaker 9: we felt it. Like, man, all right, offense got it
- 1:10:48Speaker 9: going on, right? Let's go out here and get another one.
- 1:10:49Speaker 9: And when we got that another one, I was like, oh, yeah,
- 1:10:51Speaker 9: this is it. I knew we were going to get
- 1:10:53Speaker 9: another score again. Like, I felt it. go on seeing
- 1:10:55Speaker 9: it look on arch's face and seeing what the guys
- 1:10:57Speaker 9: had going on when they were getting ready to go
- 1:10:58Speaker 9: out there on offense like i knew they're gonna go
- 1:10:59Speaker 9: there and um handle their business so my my thing
- 1:11:01Speaker 9: with the defense i mean let's give them the ball
- 1:11:02Speaker 9: back right they're hot right now you know what i
- 1:11:04Speaker 9: mean so uh we got the ball back and the
- 1:11:06Speaker 9: big thing too was the clock right we it was
- 1:11:07Speaker 9: the fourth quarter so we we didn't have that much
- 1:11:09Speaker 9: time to to just let them get down the field
- 1:11:12Speaker 9: and waste time so uh that was a big part
- 1:11:14Speaker 9: too like man i was telling my man keep the
- 1:11:15Speaker 9: eyes on the clock let's get off the field early
- 1:11:16Speaker 9: right so we give the offense the as much time
- 1:11:19Speaker 9: as possible to go out there and uh pull it
- 1:11:21Speaker 9: pull it within a one score game so Probably that
- 1:11:23Speaker 9: second one, I feel like, man, like, all right, we're
- 1:11:25Speaker 9: feeling it now.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: So if there's one thing to have momentum shift, there's
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: another thing to really get an infusion of energy, like
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: when the field goal was missed for Ohio State.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: And what was that feeling like on the sidelines?
- 1:11:40Speaker 9: Once we got the missed field goal, I was, because again, we,
- 1:11:43Speaker 9: a fortunate play, doing a great play, getting the ball
- 1:11:46Speaker 9: on the plus territory. So once I got in the
- 1:11:48Speaker 9: field and ran down, I was like, all right, well,
- 1:11:49Speaker 9: we got to get one, we got to get a stop.
- 1:11:51Speaker 9: And two, when I kick this field goal, we got
- 1:11:52Speaker 9: to block it, right? So anything, that was in my mind.
- 1:11:56Speaker 9: So when we got the, I think it was Lance,
- 1:11:58Speaker 9: got his hands up and just made it tough on
- 1:12:01Speaker 9: the kicker. So once the wide left, like I was like,
- 1:12:05Speaker 9: all right, man, like it's all the, I mean, the
- 1:12:08Speaker 9: adversity we went through and the drive that we came
- 1:12:11Speaker 9: back to get to that point. Like I just felt
- 1:12:13Speaker 9: it all like come to least because I knew we
- 1:12:15Speaker 9: were going to score the ball. There was no doubt
- 1:12:16Speaker 9: in my mind that we weren't going to score it. So,
- 1:12:18Speaker 9: once we got that stop, I was like, man, like,
- 1:12:20Speaker 9: we got it, right? And, again, like, I knew they
- 1:12:22Speaker 9: were going to do what they were going to do. So,
- 1:12:24Speaker 9: at that point, it shifted to, like, okay, how much
- 1:12:26Speaker 9: time will be on the clock left when we score?
- 1:12:28Speaker 9: All right, and what do we have to do to
- 1:12:29Speaker 9: go get it? So, after we got excited and got
- 1:12:33Speaker 9: off the field, like, it turned to, okay, so, they had, what,
- 1:12:37Speaker 9: four minutes left on the clock when they took the
- 1:12:39Speaker 9: drive off or something like that? So I thought, okay,
- 1:12:40Speaker 9: we score within, if they have a minute to two
- 1:12:43Speaker 9: minutes left, like, all right, what do we have to
- 1:12:44Speaker 9: do to make sure that we can hold this lead
- 1:12:45Speaker 9: to make sure that we can win this game? And again,
- 1:12:48Speaker 9: I think they did a good job, too, maybe unintentionally
- 1:12:50Speaker 9: or not, but when Moseley got stopped at the one-yard line,
- 1:12:52Speaker 9: they just bled more clock in. Ultimately, we were able
- 1:12:54Speaker 9: to get them in a spot where they didn't have
- 1:12:55Speaker 9: any more timeout. So again, it was that final sequence
- 1:12:58Speaker 9: of three, four drives left was something that was really
- 1:13:01Speaker 9: remarkable to see.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: So what was different for the defense? What made that
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: work differently in the second half?
- 1:13:10Speaker 9: I think it was more so Coach Champ trusted us.
- 1:13:13Speaker 9: He gave us a lot of opportunities and bad coverage.
- 1:13:15Speaker 9: Versus a team like that, that takes a lot of
- 1:13:16Speaker 9: trust for... to go against those guys over there. So
- 1:13:19Speaker 9: he turned up the heat a little bit. We got
- 1:13:21Speaker 9: off to the quarterback a little more. And he put
- 1:13:24Speaker 9: the responsibility on the corners and then the DBs to
- 1:13:26Speaker 9: go out there and make plays, right? And Bo did
- 1:13:29Speaker 9: an amazing job of being in the right spot, especially
- 1:13:32Speaker 9: on the third down.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: It was like a third and short.
- 1:13:35Speaker 9: So we had to turn up the pressure a little more,
- 1:13:38Speaker 9: which then puts the responsibility on the DBs to go
- 1:13:40Speaker 9: out there and make plays. And they did a great job.
- 1:13:42Speaker 9: So it was all around just– We tightened it down
- 1:13:44Speaker 9: a little more. We turned it up a little bit
- 1:13:45Speaker 9: and we was able to play together.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: And then the whole thing about the mental preparation for
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: UTSA and what is it going to take coming off that,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: whatever you want to call it, mountaintop experience, that kind
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: of thing, with a come from behind win over Ohio
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: State and now getting ready for a UTSA team that
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: has offensive weapons. And we're going to find out a
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: little more about them coming up in a few minutes
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: here with Andy Everett. But the offensive weaponry, that the
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: Roadrunners possess, and the challenge that they pose for this
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: Texas defense.
- 1:14:18Speaker 9: I think it's human nature a little bit to kind
- 1:14:19Speaker 9: of take a deep breath after these games like this,
- 1:14:22Speaker 9: where you want to, after you have come off such
- 1:14:24Speaker 9: a high, where you want to be like, okay, you
- 1:14:27Speaker 9: don't want to look at the next opponent like they're
- 1:14:30Speaker 9: not as good as the other team. So I think
- 1:14:33Speaker 9: for us, the challenge is going to be to stay
- 1:14:35Speaker 9: mentally locked in and focus on what we have to
- 1:14:37Speaker 9: do this week, because They have playmakers. Their receiver, actually.
- 1:14:39Speaker 9: I grew up playing against him, David Amador. He's a
- 1:14:42Speaker 9: close friend of mine. He's a baller. I've seen him
- 1:14:46Speaker 9: make plays countless times. He can run it. He can
- 1:14:48Speaker 9: throw it. He can do everything at the receiver's spot.
- 1:14:50Speaker 9: They have dangerous weapons over there. So I think the
- 1:14:53Speaker 9: challenge for us is going to be to make sure
- 1:14:55Speaker 9: that we can, A, lock in on what we have
- 1:14:58Speaker 9: to do this week, and, B, make sure we execute.
- 1:15:00Speaker 9: So that's the biggest thing on this week because you
- 1:15:02Speaker 9: don't want everyone to overlook, especially when you have SEC
- 1:15:05Speaker 9: play coming up, especially our first real game. You don't
- 1:15:07Speaker 9: want to ever overlook the schedule just because you don't
- 1:15:10Speaker 9: think you're playing a team that's the same nature as
- 1:15:13Speaker 9: the team last week. So stay sharp, stay mentally locked in,
- 1:15:16Speaker 9: and stay focused.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: That was Justin Cryer there.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: And again, we'll hear some more about this UTSA team
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: coming up in a few minutes here with Andy Everett. Hey,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: just an update to let you know that yesterday, the
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: Protect College Sports Act that's drawn so much attention of
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: late and Senator Ted Cruz was on game day talking
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: about that on Saturday. It's moving closer to a final
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: vote in the Senate, that bill that fix what they
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: say are some of the biggest problems in college sports,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: like the spiraling spending, the constant lawsuits, and the transfer
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: portal just being what it is. It did clear a
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: major hurdle yesterday. The Senate voted 74 to 24 to
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: halt debate and move the measure one step closer to
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: a final up or down vote. So this Protect College
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Sports Act sponsored by Senator Cruz, called a bipartisan solution
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: designed to bring order to the chaos, easily cleared the
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: 60-vote threshold it needed to stop the filibuster. So there
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: is a block of opposition. Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: said what this bill does at its core is to
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: protect a system of exploitation. So they don't like it,
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: and so it's still going to go back and forth,
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: but at least it's going to get to a vote
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: coming up. All right, up next, Back to talking some
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: college football as we visit with Andy Everett, play-by-play voice
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: of the UTSA Roadrunners when we continue on the Shot
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: Rock Wednesday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: and the iHeartRadio app. It is a Yacht Rock Wednesday
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: here on Sports Radio AM 1300, The Zone. If we're
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: talking about, as we were earlier, about your Mount Rushmore
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: of individual Yacht Rock artists with Michael McDonald and Christopher
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: Cross and Kenny Loggins and all those, Toto certainly would
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: be up there in terms of a band's Mount Rushmore.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: I say this only because I'm old enough to know this.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: And our next guest has a wisdom, I would imagine,
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: also about Yacht Rock. He's Andy Everett from The Ticket
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: in San Antonio and, of course, the voice of the
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: UTSA Roadrunners who joins us. I hope I'm not discrediting
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: you by saying you've got the wisdom of knowing a
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: bit or two about Yacht Rock.
- 1:17:36Speaker 11: Well, my musical selection is very eclectic and others have
- 1:17:39Speaker 11: different adjectives for it.
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: I'll go with Toto since you mentioned that one.
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: Okay. All right.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: That'll work. That'll work. Absolutely. I'm glad you're able to
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: join me.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: We've had a chance to see each other the past
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: couple years when they played. These two teams have played
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: on the even-numbered years. And Coach Traylor's been a longtime
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: friend of mine. He hopped on the show yesterday, and
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: we were talking about a lot of things about G6
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: programs and trying to make the step forward. And I
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: want to start with that and get your thoughts because
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: you're close, obviously, to the athletic department.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: And you know what the challenge is.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: In today's day and age of college football, what it
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: means to be a G6 program, to be competitive, the
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: fact that there were two G6 programs in the playoff
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: last year. And I asked Jeff yesterday if it's a
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: step forward, even though now the four Power Four Conference
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: winners are guaranteed a slot, which they weren't last year.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: And you can ask Duke about that.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: But he likes the progress, not only that the university
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: and the athletic department is making there and the commitments
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: that they've made, but also G6 programs as well. How
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: do you feel about all this as you've watched it
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: develop over time?
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: Well, I think the G6... schools now have a chance.
- 1:18:51Speaker 11: If we would have gone back in a time machine
- 1:18:53Speaker 11: five or ten years ago, nobody would have thought Indiana
- 1:18:55Speaker 11: was going to be any good. In fact, if you
- 1:18:57Speaker 11: look at the last 15 years plus the two games
- 1:19:00Speaker 11: that UTSA has played in its history, their record is
- 1:19:03Speaker 11: better than Indiana's. including their undefeated season last year.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: True.
- 1:19:07Speaker 11: So what that tells me is if UTSA can find
- 1:19:10Speaker 11: a Mark Cuban and donate $ 40 million to NIL, Jeff
- 1:19:14Speaker 11: Traylor can build a similar roster. And so now all
- 1:19:17Speaker 11: the Power Six schools have just as good a chance
- 1:19:19Speaker 11: as the schools that were in the Power Four conferences
- 1:19:23Speaker 11: that were, you know, Indiana was considered the worst team
- 1:19:26Speaker 11: in the last hundred years in football until Kurt Sinetti
- 1:19:29Speaker 11: got there and the paychecks started rolling in. So I
- 1:19:31Speaker 11: think that's what's cool about the college football playoff and
- 1:19:34Speaker 11: the group of six is that while it's still unbalanced
- 1:19:37Speaker 11: in terms of what UTSA is paying its players compared
- 1:19:40Speaker 11: to what Texas is, the opportunity exists if and when
- 1:19:42Speaker 11: they can find that big donor.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: Was it also a boost, as I mentioned, that two
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: G6 schools got into the playoff last year? And again,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: I know the P4 schools are now the conference champions
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: are guaranteed to play, but especially if, and it looks
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: like we're headed this way, Andy, that this thing is
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: going to double in size, if not next year, certainly
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: the year after, but probably next year, I'm thinking, to
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: get to 24, that that only opens up more of
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: an avenue for G6 schools.
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: Do you agree with that?
- 1:20:13Speaker 5: Absolutely. And the G6 schools... are going to need.
- 1:20:16Speaker 11: Some help usually if they're going to go on the
- 1:20:19Speaker 11: road in December and play a team that's between 5
- 1:20:22Speaker 11: and 12 in the nation. Even SMU a couple years
- 1:20:25Speaker 11: ago when they got it, and they're now a P4 school,
- 1:20:28Speaker 11: they're moving their way back into that P4 category after
- 1:20:31Speaker 11: years of not being there. So to me, you've got
- 1:20:35Speaker 11: to give those schools the opportunity and the chance. Now,
- 1:20:37Speaker 11: it may be an easy game for whoever they play,
- 1:20:41Speaker 11: But it's something that we got to go forward and
- 1:20:43Speaker 11: maybe with the Save Congress Act, the Save College Football Act,
- 1:20:47Speaker 11: and we get some regulations on spending. the G6 schools
- 1:20:51Speaker 11: can at least get closer to what the P4 schools
- 1:20:53Speaker 11: are spending.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: Do you see, as we heard Jeff talk about, do
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: you see the commitment from UTSA, from administration, from athletics,
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: being to get there? I mean, even set aside, like
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: you said, if you could find a Mark Cuban to
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: plunk down $ 40 million would be wonderful. But even that
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: set aside, Have you seen a renewed commitment from the
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: athletic department on what they're doing to help raise the
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: profile and the hopes for UTSA football?
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I have.
- 1:21:22Speaker 11: And especially since Jeff has been there, it's gotten progressively
- 1:21:25Speaker 11: better each and every year. And he continues to educate
- 1:21:28Speaker 11: those on what is necessary in order to be amongst
- 1:21:32Speaker 11: the elites in the group of six. The fact that
- 1:21:36Speaker 11: I thought UTSA was more prepared to go on the
- 1:21:39Speaker 11: road and play Texas State than Texas State was last year.
- 1:21:42Speaker 11: They had the cooling benches. They had the misters. Texas
- 1:21:45Speaker 11: State was sitting on metal bleacher seats. And not that
- 1:21:49Speaker 11: they didn't think about doing it. And Jeff mentioned pretty
- 1:21:53Speaker 11: much everybody on his staff that had a role in
- 1:21:56Speaker 11: making sure that UTSA was uber prepared for that game
- 1:21:59Speaker 11: last week.
- 1:21:59Speaker 5: And it paid off at the end.
- 1:22:01Speaker 11: I thought near the end of the game, UTSA was
- 1:22:03Speaker 11: the more stronger team and more conditioned team.
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: How important was that? A, to get the 2-0, and B,
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: you can tell me better than I can how much
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: quote-unquote rivalry there is in that I-35 series, but just
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: the mere fact to get some forward momentum before you
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: even get up to Austin this week.
- 1:22:24Speaker 11: Well, from the rivalry standpoint, I think football has rekindled
- 1:22:27Speaker 11: it because we haven't been in a conference with each
- 1:22:29Speaker 11: other since 2013. So the basketball game is only one
- 1:22:33Speaker 11: a year, and we go back and forth on the site. Baseball,
- 1:22:35Speaker 11: they play two, and they go back and forth, and
- 1:22:37Speaker 11: there's some animosity there. But the basketball rivalry kind of
- 1:22:43Speaker 11: died down a little bit when we.
- 1:22:44Speaker 5: Left our conferences.
- 1:22:45Speaker 11: The football rivalry is now a rivalry because Texas State
- 1:22:48Speaker 11: won the two before last Saturday. And that really, because
- 1:22:51Speaker 11: before that, UTSA was 5-0. But from a terms of importance,
- 1:22:55Speaker 11: if UTSA is going to be considered for the CFP,
- 1:22:58Speaker 11: they've got to beat everybody but Texas.
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: And so if they don't, then at some point.
- 1:23:03Speaker 11: They've got to think about winning the conference, getting a
- 1:23:05Speaker 11: conference championship. And that's the ultimate goal for every Power
- 1:23:08Speaker 11: 6 team is win your league. And then let the
- 1:23:11Speaker 11: guys that are voting for you figure out where you're
- 1:23:13Speaker 11: going to end up, whether it's a big bowl game
- 1:23:15Speaker 11: against a Power 4 school, a regular bowl game, or
- 1:23:18Speaker 11: if you're going to make the CFP. But it was important,
- 1:23:20Speaker 11: I think, to snap the two-game losing streak against Texas
- 1:23:23Speaker 11: State and to give yourself confidence because other than the
- 1:23:27Speaker 11: Texas game, UTSA will be pick-em or favored in every
- 1:23:30Speaker 11: game they play the rest of the year.
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: And to have that success against Texas State on the road.
- 1:23:35Speaker 11: And the schedule is really, I think, favorable. Now, it's hard,
- 1:23:40Speaker 11: but the three toughest teams they play once we get
- 1:23:42Speaker 11: to conference are all at home.
- 1:23:44Speaker 5: It's Navy, North Texas, and USF, South Florida.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: And.
- 1:23:49Speaker 11: Not that I want to throw shade at any of
- 1:23:51Speaker 11: these schools because they can now compete and be good,
- 1:23:55Speaker 11: but projected in the bottom half of the conference are Rice, Ford, Atlantic,
- 1:23:59Speaker 11: and Tulsa, and those three teams are on the road.
- 1:24:03Speaker 11: So the situation is there if UTSA plays as well
- 1:24:07Speaker 11: as against Texas State, and now that they have played
- 1:24:10Speaker 11: that well against Texas State, I think they have confidence
- 1:24:12Speaker 11: they can play that well against anybody.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: Visiting with Andy Everett, play-by-play voice of the UTSA Roadrunners
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: here on 13 Under the Zone. Okay, let me get
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: your thoughts on this particular team and what you've seen
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: so far in the 2-0 start.
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: What has really stood out to you? What do you
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: like about this group?
- 1:24:28Speaker 11: Well, first of all, they haven't turned it over, so
- 1:24:29Speaker 11: that's the most important thing. Two games, no turnovers. The
- 1:24:32Speaker 11: defense has created five takeaways.
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: That's huge.
- 1:24:36Speaker 11: The defensive coordinator, Jess Lepp, and I talk every week
- 1:24:38Speaker 11: for a segment in our pregame show and We always
- 1:24:40Speaker 11: talk about takeaways. They got two against UTRGV and three
- 1:24:43Speaker 11: last week. So that's always a good thing. Offensively, I
- 1:24:47Speaker 11: think Will Henderson has an NFL chance, especially he's probably
- 1:24:52Speaker 11: one if not the fastest players in the country, and.
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: He could have gone anywhere. Jeff always talks about his players.
- 1:24:57Speaker 11: If you see anybody out there performing, they're playing for
- 1:24:59Speaker 11: a third of what they could get someplace else. And
- 1:25:02Speaker 11: so UTSA roster probably could get more someplace else. But
- 1:25:06Speaker 11: Will Henderson's not only a really good football player but
- 1:25:08Speaker 11: a really good person.
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: And they've got depth at running back.
- 1:25:11Speaker 11: So far, what they've been able to do and do
- 1:25:14Speaker 11: very well is move the ball with their.
- 1:25:17Speaker 5: Running backs and their short passing attack.
- 1:25:19Speaker 11: We've seen a few shots taken, but other than the
- 1:25:22Speaker 11: silly penalties, the procedure penalties, they've played pretty clean on offense. Defensively,
- 1:25:28Speaker 11: we didn't know what to expect. We had a lot
- 1:25:30Speaker 11: of guys coming back that had played, but had never
- 1:25:33Speaker 11: played necessarily together on the same unit. So you had
- 1:25:36Speaker 11: some second-teamers that made first team, and you had some
- 1:25:38Speaker 11: third-teamers that made second team. And he went in the portal,
- 1:25:41Speaker 11: and he got some guys that were coming back from
- 1:25:43Speaker 11: P4 or moving up from FCS. I think the defense
- 1:25:48Speaker 11: is going to be pretty good for most of the year.
- 1:25:50Speaker 11: The only thing they have done wrong is they've had
- 1:25:52Speaker 11: a couple of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that have given the
- 1:25:55Speaker 11: other team opportunities. But they did have a little bit
- 1:25:59Speaker 11: of an issue against the run against Texas State. Texas
- 1:26:01Speaker 11: State was pretty effective with that. But I think they're
- 1:26:04Speaker 11: going to fix that. They know why they messed up,
- 1:26:06Speaker 11: and they've been working on that this week.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: It seems like both teams, both Texas and UTSA, got
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: a little emotional boost from being able to prove they
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: can rally back and win a football game in the
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: fourth quarter when they're down. And for the ebb and
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: flow of the game you had, which was different, obviously,
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: the Texas-Ohio State game was just a huge mountain to
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: climb in the fourth quarter. But you had a lot
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: of ebb and flow back and forth in that ball
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: game coming down to the wire, didn't you?
- 1:26:33Speaker 11: Yeah, and the four-minute drive that UTSA had at the
- 1:26:35Speaker 11: end of the game to win it.
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: Two fourth-down conversions. They had third and 21.
- 1:26:39Speaker 11: They hit a curl route and get 13 or 14,
- 1:26:42Speaker 11: and then they get Owen on a RPO.
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: And he was able to run for seven and pick
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: up the first down.
- 1:26:48Speaker 11: So those kind of things let them know, hey, we're
- 1:26:52Speaker 11: still in this. They didn't want to give the ball away.
- 1:26:55Speaker 11: Jeff has been notorious in the past. If he doesn't
- 1:26:57Speaker 11: think the other team's offense can be stopped, he'll go
- 1:26:59Speaker 11: for it on fourth down. UTSA went for it on
- 1:27:01Speaker 11: fourth down six times in the Texas State game. So
- 1:27:03Speaker 11: they were five of six on fourth down. And so
- 1:27:07Speaker 11: I remember a few years ago when we were playing
- 1:27:08Speaker 11: a shootout against Western Kentucky.
- 1:27:10Speaker 5: I'm not funny. If we don't make it, our defense
- 1:27:12Speaker 5: has got.
- 1:27:13Speaker 11: Just as good a chance to stop them from the
- 1:27:14Speaker 11: 40 as they do from the 10.
- 1:27:16Speaker 5: So we're going to see.
- 1:27:18Speaker 11: He's not afraid to keep that offense on the field
- 1:27:20Speaker 11: if he thinks that he can do it. I don't know,
- 1:27:23Speaker 11: other than Will Henderson, if there's– I think Owen McCown's terrific.
- 1:27:26Speaker 11: But from an NFL perspective, other than Will Henderson– I
- 1:27:30Speaker 11: don't know that there's anybody that's, you know, a transfer
- 1:27:34Speaker 11: like Devin McEwen was last year to where he could
- 1:27:36Speaker 11: go start for Ohio State next year, but they got
- 1:27:38Speaker 11: a lot of really good football players.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: I was going to ask you about McCown, and then
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: the other guy I was going to ask about, a
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: guy that, well, in addition to Will Henderson, calling a
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: state championship game that he played in that I did,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: another one was David Amador, who is, he was kind
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: of an all-everything-everywhere kind of guy when he was at
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: Galena Park North Shore, and I think He strikes me
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: as that kind of guy for the Roadrunners as well.
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: Yeah, he can get open easily. They can run him
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: on jet sweeps.
- 1:28:06Speaker 11: They can get the ball to him on a flare-out
- 1:28:09Speaker 11: pass to the boundary. He returns punts. He is the
- 1:28:13Speaker 11: jack-of-all-trades guy. And I don't think he's had a pass
- 1:28:16Speaker 11: because UTSA has run some double passes with him over
- 1:28:18Speaker 11: the years.
- 1:28:19Speaker 5: And I think he's perfect so far. I think he's
- 1:28:21Speaker 5: had an incomplete.
- 1:28:22Speaker 11: And the quarterback rating for however they figured this out
- 1:28:25Speaker 11: against Texas State when they scored was 799. So we
- 1:28:29Speaker 11: talked to him a lot about how good of a
- 1:28:30Speaker 11: passer he is. They want him to play wide receiver
- 1:28:33Speaker 11: and kick return, obviously. That's where he, or punt return,
- 1:28:36Speaker 11: that's where his strengths are. But he's a delightful person.
- 1:28:39Speaker 11: We're getting ready for our coaching show tonight. He's going
- 1:28:41Speaker 11: to be one of our guests, and we'll talk about
- 1:28:44Speaker 11: that with him. He's a terrific guy and a terrific player.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: I asked Jeff about this yesterday, and I think you'll
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: agree with what he said, but I'm curious to get
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: your thoughts on this.
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: I said that the impression.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: That I got was that in a rivalry game on
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: the road like what you had last week, that the
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: vibe I got, especially from the way the game started,
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: was that was that your guys did not seem, the
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: experience or at least the moment was not too big
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: for them walking into the environment.
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: And he agreed with that.
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: And then he said, now, obviously, it's different going into
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: DKR where you have over 100,000 fans. And he went
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: on to praise Chris Tocanti and the game op staff
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: for everything, the game day environment. He said it was
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: nothing different. was like this when i was there and
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: he's right back in 15 but from these guys as
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: you've gotten to know these guys you get the feeling
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: also they'll welcome this environment and then and uh they
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: don't mind walking into somebody's house that big and and
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: uh feeling like the moment is not too big for
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: them that they can compete in an environment like this
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: let alone the team they're going up against i think.
- 1:29:57Speaker 11: These smaller schools even uh we played utr gv two
- 1:30:00Speaker 11: weeks ago that team had more talent than UTSA's team
- 1:30:05Speaker 11: did in 2011 when we started the program. And we
- 1:30:07Speaker 11: were considered FCS moving to FBS right away. They're going
- 1:30:10Speaker 11: to stay FCS for a while. And you look at
- 1:30:13Speaker 11: UTRGV's rosters, there's guys on that team that can play
- 1:30:15Speaker 11: at the next level. And what I get by that is,
- 1:30:18Speaker 11: they're not really afraid of anything. They may be 30-point underdogs.
- 1:30:21Speaker 11: The prognosticators may say you've got no chance. And that
- 1:30:26Speaker 11: may end up being what happens. But it's not because
- 1:30:28Speaker 11: they were afraid of the moment. And I see this
- 1:30:30Speaker 11: with basketball players. We had a basketball game eight or
- 1:30:33Speaker 11: nine years ago, who turned out to be the leading
- 1:30:35Speaker 11: scorer in UTSA basketball history. And we're playing at Nebraska.
- 1:30:39Speaker 11: And he said, one of the coaches asked him, he said,
- 1:30:41Speaker 11: are you nervous? He goes, no, man, this is my house.
- 1:30:44Speaker 11: I want to be here. I can't wait to play.
- 1:30:46Speaker 11: And he went out and scored 30 that night. Now
- 1:30:48Speaker 11: they lost by seven or eight, but he went out
- 1:30:49Speaker 11: and played great. And so even though the mountain may
- 1:30:53Speaker 11: be a big one to climb for UTSA this weekend,
- 1:30:55Speaker 11: it's not because they're afraid of the place like teams
- 1:30:57Speaker 11: may have been 15 or 20 years ago.
- 1:30:59Speaker 5: It's just because there's more better players on the other team.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: Given that we've already seen what can happen with, Oklahoma
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: State what they did to Oregon and other big surprising
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: things I'm sure that the guys feel like look if
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: we stick to our guns we play the way we're
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: capable of playing we can be there in the fourth
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: quarter what would those elements in your mind be in
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: addition obviously not turning over the ball but what what
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: what else would you feel as being important elements that
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: could make this the kind of fourth quarter game they
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: wanted to.
- 1:31:29Speaker 11: Be well number one you have to do something that
- 1:31:32Speaker 11: Texas is really good at and and that is make
- 1:31:35Speaker 11: them turn it over You're going to have to have
- 1:31:37Speaker 11: multiple takeaways, multiple red zone stops. And Jeff made this
- 1:31:41Speaker 11: comment on Monday in his presser. You turn your head
- 1:31:43Speaker 11: for two seconds the other way or 0.2 seconds and boom,
- 1:31:46Speaker 11: it's a touchdown. And he was talking about reviewing the
- 1:31:48Speaker 11: Texas State film against Texas is that they were sound
- 1:31:52Speaker 11: in there where they were set lined up.
- 1:31:54Speaker 5: They were sound in there, all their moves.
- 1:31:57Speaker 11: But then all of a sudden, one guy just flinched
- 1:31:59Speaker 11: for a second and boom, the other guy's behind him
- 1:32:01Speaker 11: and it's a touchdown. You can't have any of that.
- 1:32:03Speaker 11: You can't have unsupportive conduct penalties. You have to play,
- 1:32:06Speaker 11: if there is such a thing, a perfect game and
- 1:32:08Speaker 11: then hope the other team helps you. And whether it's
- 1:32:11Speaker 11: Western Michigan and Michigan going down to the wire a
- 1:32:13Speaker 11: few weeks ago, or it's the Appalachian State upsets of
- 1:32:17Speaker 11: Texas A & M and Michigan in the past, I
- 1:32:20Speaker 11: think most of the time when that happens, it's because
- 1:32:22Speaker 11: the other team played down to that level instead.
- 1:32:25Speaker 7: Of the other.
- 1:32:26Speaker 11: And then the team that wins it or gets close
- 1:32:29Speaker 11: is playing as perfectly as they can.
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: And so that's why you play the games. It's possible.
- 1:32:35Speaker 11: I go back to the 2022 game, our first trip
- 1:32:37Speaker 11: up there. I think it was nine or 10 points
- 1:32:40Speaker 11: going into the fourth quarter. And then I think we
- 1:32:43Speaker 11: had a turnover that led into a Texas touchdown. And
- 1:32:47Speaker 11: then we had to putt and Texas scored again to
- 1:32:49Speaker 11: make it a three and a half score game. So
- 1:32:52Speaker 11: if you can put yourself in a position to be
- 1:32:54Speaker 11: there when you get to the fourth and then you
- 1:32:56Speaker 11: hope something weird happens, then that's how you have to
- 1:32:58Speaker 11: look at it.
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: He's Andy Everett, play-by-play voice of the UTSA Roadrunners. He'll
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: be calling the game on the ticket, 760 in San
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: Antonio and UTSA's network as well. Hey, Andy, I appreciate
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: your time. We'll help you adjust as best as possible
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: to the new broadcasting digs.
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: I'll put it that way.
- 1:33:17Speaker 11: I've seen the pictures, and I'll do what I can,
- 1:33:21Speaker 11: but I'm looking forward to the challenge.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:33:23Speaker 7: Thanks, Andy.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: Appreciate it. That's Andy Everett, play-by-play voice of the UTSA Roadrunners.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: We have more coming up when we continue on 13
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: Under the Zone.
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: Turn out right How to tell you, girl I want.
- 1:33:40Speaker 4: To build my world around you Tell you.
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: That it's true I want to make you understand You know,
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: when you do flip the calendar on another birthday, especially
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: when you've had as many birthdays as I've had, it
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: does make you a little more susceptible to reminiscing a
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: little bit.
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: A little bit of that, reminiscing.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: You know, the win for Texas over Ohio State, a
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: lot of Longhorn fans, I've heard from so many of them,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: reminiscing about the great wins of the Buckeyes in the past.
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: And some even.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: Comparing it with, you know, the win over USC in
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: the Rose Bowl, these great games and all that other
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: kind of stuff. But reminiscing there from Little River Band
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: is part of a Yacht Rock Wednesday. I couldn't let
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: this go because it comes out every Wednesday. It's one
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: of my favorite things to read online, and that's the
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: college football bottom 10. Our friend Marty McGee puts that
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: together from ESPN. I say friend, and I got a
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: chance to meet with him and sit next to him. at, uh,
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: the sports cash through the year bank for the first
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: time that I won the award back in 2016. And
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: we were at the same table in 2017. Um, and
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: I had taken my mom with me to that at
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: the time I was widowed in it. And, uh, and
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: it had not, uh, you know, uh, Linda and I
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: not yet gotten together and all that. So I had,
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: I had my mom with me, which God rest her soul.
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: It's wonderful.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: And it also gives you the cringy feeling, too, when
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: you take your mom and she's sitting at a table
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: and she's bragging on her son to people like John Anderson,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: an anchor at ESPN.
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: You know, my son, I'm like, Mom, Mom, please. And
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: Marty McGee, they got a big.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: kick out of it. Ryan McGee, rather, excuse me, and
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: Marty Smith. But Ryan, he got a kick out of it.
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: But anyway, he pins the bottom 10. And as we've explained,
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: if you hadn't heard, the bottom 10, and this was
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: a syndicated column.
- 1:36:19Speaker 3: I'm telling you, it was back in the 80s. I
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: used to read it when I was in college.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: And they would take Ten of the worst teams in
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: college football, but not necessarily the ten worst teams. It
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: could be a team that much is expected of, and
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: they fell flat on their face, easy for you to say.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: So it could be a team like that. We're looking
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: at you, Oregon, you know, that kind of thing. And
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: they were the ones that came up with the cute
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: nicknames like UTEP would be in it. Um, and I
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: think Marty is referred to, or Ryan McGee is referred
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: to them as you tepid. Uh, I think back then
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: they were called university of Texas of L intercepted Paso.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: I think was the way it was described back then.
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: So they put all the cute nicknames on and describe
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: why they're in the bottom 10. So with that, uh,
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: the bottom 10 this week, going from 10 down to one, um, is,
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: number 10 is, Sam Houston, we have a problem.
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: Sam Houston is 0-2, and I always like how Ryan
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: does this.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: He writes it with every word that has a C
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: or a K or a K sound has the letter K,
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: because the Bearcats spell their name with a K, as
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: we know. So here's the Bearcats couldn't, with a K, climb,
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: with a K, into the win column, with a K,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: losing to Tulsa, a.k.a.
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: UT, actually they're TU at Tulsa. It's Tulsa University.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: After kicking off their calendar with a K, with a
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: loss to Troy, aka TU, this week's clash with a
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: K is with Nichols with a K, sorry. Nichols, N-I-C-H-O-L-L-S,
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: which doesn't include K-A-T in its name. But next week's contest, Kay,
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: is with Texas Tech, a.k.a.
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: TTU.
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: So anyway, on the waiting list, UTEP it, I mentioned.
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: Western Kentucky Hillstoppers, Baller.
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: State, CMU, Woohoo, Mexico State.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: And politics oh okay all right that's number 10 number
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: nine state of kent he always says kent state The
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: Golden Flash has pocketed $ 1. 3 million for their week one
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: loss at South Carolina, and will receive another $ 1. 9 million
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: to travel to Ohio State this weekend.
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: That's a tough week to face the Buckeyes.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: How much they paid Wofford to come to Kent in
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: between has not been disclosed, but for some reason I
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: have a flash here. the golden Eagle as Leo DiCaprio
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: fun coupons, Jeff in my head.
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: I don't get that reference.
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: I didn't either. All right. Number eight, Missouri state is
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: Missouri state.
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: Um, The Show Me State Bears face Marshall in what
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: felt like it might be the pillow fight of the week,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: but the blundering Hearn messed all of that up when
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: they won over muddled Tennessee in another game that felt
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: like it could have been a PFOW before MTSU won.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: Pillow fight of the week is PFOW. Before MTSU won
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: in week one of a Murray State. It's enough to
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: make us scream into our pillows for a week. Number one,
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: San Diego. Sacramento State, and SAC has the K in it, S-A-C-K,
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: like you're getting your quarterback, SAC.
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: Sacramento State.
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: The SACs, who used to be in the FCS, lost
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: their opener at Eastern Michigan in what is now a
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: MAAC conference game. Last weekend, they lost to Fresno State,
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: which is no longer in the Mountain West, but is
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: in the Pac-12. This weekend, they'll host North Dakota State,
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: which is also no longer in the FCS, but is
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: in the Mountain West. Did I miss something? Is Christopher
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: Nolan making a college football movie? Number six, ULM pronounced, um,
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: it's Louisiana Monroe. Um, the Hawks had a chance entering the, um,
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: fourth quarter this past week before falling to the, um,
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: UAB Blazers 2620. Now they host the, um, Southeast Louisiana Lions,
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: a one and two FCS team, according to, um, ESPN Athletics.
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: ULM has a 59% chance of snapping its 10-game losing streak.
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: All right, here's what I was talking about, the difference.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: It doesn't necessarily have to be the worst teams, but
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: number five is Oregon.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: So it's Oregon.
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: He goes, I was in Kentucky last weekend when I
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: thought it was a little suspicious when I saw some
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: of the Jurassic Park scientists with Barbasol cans sneaking around
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: behind Wildcats coach Will Stide to snatch hair off his head.
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: Now I realize they've been sent by Dan Lanning to
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: see if he could steal back some offensive DNA from
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: his old OC and sneak out of the coveted fifth spot.
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: That's for losing to Oklahoma State. Number four, in a rut, Gers.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: The Scarlet Blights were stunned by UMass to open the season,
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: then lost to Boston College. Fresh out of Massachusetts schools
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: to play. They will now participate in one of those
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: classic regional rivalries that has powered the Big Ten for
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: 30 years, Rutgers at USC.
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: That's the one.
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: Number two, Northern Ill-Ug-Noise, 0-2. The other Huskies lost to
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: FCS team Illinois State at home, 28-24, leading many around
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: Husky Stadium.
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: Okay, the few around Husky Stadium.
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: No wonder allowed.
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: When does Maction start? Then they realize NIU is now
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: in the Mountain West.
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: I forgot about that, too.
- 1:41:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: And number one.
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: Charlotte owen tours because you know their team name is
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: the 49ers yep the charlotte owen tours the tours or
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: uh sorry niners spent last week in old miss losing
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: 41 to 9 now they travel to appalachian state where
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: according to the mystically correct espn analytics machine they have
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: only a 14 chance of winning the good news is
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: is that if there were ever two college towns where
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: someone could find a drink to ease their pain, they're
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: Oxford and Boone.
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: Oh, beautiful Boone, North Carolina.
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: All right, there's your bottom 10 of the week. We'll
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: be back to wrap up today's edition of the program
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: on 13 Under the Zone.
