- 1:39Speaker 5: On this episode, I'm talking to a former adult actress
- 1:43Speaker 5: who is going into the acting and modeling world. She's
- 1:45Speaker 5: actually been doing it for a few years now. She's
- 1:47Speaker 5: starting Black Dynamite, and she's also starting in Catch twenty two,
- 1:51Speaker 5: which is actually released this year. It's actually released a
- 1:54Speaker 5: couple months ago. And we just had josh On on
- 1:56Speaker 5: the last episode and he actually was the director of
- 1:59Speaker 5: the project. Really quickly, I know, we briefly talk about
- 2:05Speaker 5: the adult film world. Sorry, if I could actually talk,
- 2:08Speaker 5: We do briefly talk about the adult film world from
- 2:11Speaker 5: and honestly, it's probably one percent of this conversation. So
- 2:15Speaker 5: if you're, you know, maybe tuning in to hear more
- 2:17Speaker 5: about that, I'm sorry, we're not really going to talk
- 2:19Speaker 5: too much. About that. Literally, it's like one percent and
- 2:22Speaker 5: nineteen percent is about just the crazy world we call
- 2:26Speaker 5: the indie filmmaking world. With guests Charmaine Starr, Hi Charmain,
- 2:31Speaker 5: thanks all for coming on the show.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Hi Dave, thank you for having me.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Oh it's my pleasure to have you here. You know,
- 2:38Speaker 5: I wanted to ask Charmain, you know, how you got
- 2:40Speaker 5: started in the film industry. It's a question I ask
- 2:42Speaker 5: everybody because nobody has the same exact story, and I
- 2:46Speaker 5: just wanted to ask, you know, how did you find
- 2:48Speaker 5: yourself in the film industry.
- 2:52Speaker 4: How I found myself in the film industry. It wasn't
- 2:55Speaker 4: It was not too long ago. I was in the
- 3:00Speaker 4: I started in the adult industry for quite some time,
- 3:03Speaker 4: about fifteen years. I you know. I did various films,
- 3:10Speaker 4: adult films, magazines, I you know, so I built a
- 3:13Speaker 4: name for myself. And I think it was around two
- 3:17Speaker 4: thousand and six or seven. My agent had a booking
- 3:25Speaker 4: for me. The director specifically wanted me in the movie.
- 3:30Speaker 4: So I didn't have to cast for this role. And
- 3:33Speaker 4: it was a very short role. It was for Black Dynamite,
- 3:37Speaker 4: and I didn't think anything of it. I thought it
- 3:39Speaker 4: was just you know, a usual mainstream because I've done
- 3:42Speaker 4: a few mainstreams for you know, I've shot for HBO, Cinemax,
- 3:47Speaker 4: some commercials, so I thought it was okay, you know,
- 3:50Speaker 4: just a little mainstream role. And then when I you know,
- 3:55Speaker 4: when I shot the film, everybody was really amazing, the
- 3:59Speaker 4: cast and crew, director, you know, Michael Jai White, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 4: everybody was really nice, and it was you know, it
- 4:05Speaker 4: was only a few days that I shot the film.
- 4:09Speaker 4: A year later, they gave me a call and they
- 4:11Speaker 4: said that the film was going to be in Sundance
- 4:13Speaker 4: Film Festival and that I was invited. So I thought
- 4:18Speaker 4: that I was surprised that this film, you know, was
- 4:23Speaker 4: went so big. And when I went to the film
- 4:27Speaker 4: Film Festival, Sentence Film Festival, I got picked up right
- 4:30Speaker 4: away by Sony Pictures, and you know, I I went
- 4:36Speaker 4: into this new world of the mainstream world of film
- 4:40Speaker 4: and I fell in love. I loved it. That's how
- 4:44Speaker 4: I started in the film, the you know, mainstream film industry.
- 4:49Speaker 5: So just to go back to when they first approached
- 4:52Speaker 5: you about being in Black Dynamite, So what were your
- 4:55Speaker 5: first impressions of actual of actually the film industry, of
- 4:59Speaker 5: you know, having to sort of you know, there's a
- 5:02Speaker 5: lot of waiting around. As they say, there's a lot
- 5:04Speaker 5: of downtime, So you know, did you find it a
- 5:07Speaker 5: lot more sort of hectic, slower faster? You know, what
- 5:10Speaker 5: were your first impressions of it?
- 5:12Speaker 4: Well, my first impressions were it was just it's just
- 5:16Speaker 4: like the same set that I you know, in the
- 5:18Speaker 4: adult industry. It was I mean, it's a big production.
- 5:23Speaker 4: I wasn't really nervous because it was just a set,
- 5:25Speaker 4: but I was kind of nervous because there was just
- 5:27Speaker 4: a little bit more people. There's just a lot more
- 5:30Speaker 4: people involved, and it was it wasn't you know, the
- 5:34Speaker 4: cast and crew and director I wasn't familiar with. So
- 5:38Speaker 4: you know, there was some downtime. But you know, that's
- 5:43Speaker 4: just how it is. You know, even in the adult industry,
- 5:47Speaker 4: there's always a lot of downtime. You got to wait
- 5:48Speaker 4: for your scene. So I'm used to that, so you know,
- 5:51Speaker 4: there wasn't anything new. Uh. The only thing was just
- 5:55Speaker 4: getting used to different people around me, you know, the
- 5:58Speaker 4: director and and the cast, because you know, I come
- 6:02Speaker 4: from a different world of film, so just meeting regular
- 6:06Speaker 4: actors and and you know, from that side of the world.
- 6:11Speaker 4: It's It's very interesting because they were surprised about me
- 6:14Speaker 4: because I was, you know, a little bit more confident
- 6:17Speaker 4: in you know, the scene because in the scene I was,
- 6:20Speaker 4: you know, I just be naked. But you know why
- 6:23Speaker 4: when I started this, you know this they shot the scene,
- 6:26Speaker 4: I had a robe on. So when the director said,
- 6:29Speaker 4: you know, he was ready, I you know, I was confident.
- 6:32Speaker 4: I didn't feel kind of insecure a while not showing
- 6:36Speaker 4: my body. But it's funny because the crew around me
- 6:39Speaker 4: were actually more shy, you know, they were like kind
- 6:43Speaker 4: of looking away and making me feel comfortable, like are
- 6:46Speaker 4: you okay? Here? Do you here's a towel. I'm like, no, no, no,
- 6:49Speaker 4: it's okay. I'm you know, I'm fine. So it was
- 6:53Speaker 4: it was very it was nice, it was sweet. You know,
- 6:55Speaker 4: they were you know, that's the only thing that was different.
- 6:59Speaker 5: You know, I would call Offfman from Troma Entertainment. I
- 7:01Speaker 5: don't know if you know who Lloyd is.
- 7:04Speaker 4: No.
- 7:04Speaker 5: I taught so he's he's been producing movies for like
- 7:07Speaker 5: thirty years. And one of the things that he found
- 7:11Speaker 5: was that you know, certain like actresses, whenever they have
- 7:15Speaker 5: to do like a nude scene like that, or maybe
- 7:17Speaker 5: you know, be in front of the camera like that.
- 7:19Speaker 5: They all they just the day of the shoot, they
- 7:21Speaker 5: get very tense, they start having you know, they start
- 7:24Speaker 5: you know saying, oh, I don't know if I want
- 7:25Speaker 5: to do this. And that's when he basically he approached
- 7:30Speaker 5: like Jenna Jamison at the time and said, you know,
- 7:32Speaker 5: would you want to do a scene where we can
- 7:33Speaker 5: just have you in in front of the camera And
- 7:35Speaker 5: she said, you know, I'm so used to it. It's
- 7:37Speaker 5: you know, it's like another day at the office, so
- 7:39Speaker 5: to speak. That's when he started getting like, you know,
- 7:42Speaker 5: more adult performers than some of his movies to do
- 7:44Speaker 5: scenes like that because they are so comfortable with it.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, I totally agree with that. Yeah. I think
- 7:51Speaker 4: it's because of that, you know, being comfortable in front
- 7:56Speaker 4: of the camera, being professional, knowing the lighting, knowing your surroundings.
- 8:02Speaker 4: You know, it's much easier to work with somebody, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 4: in that if if there's a particular scene that has
- 8:09Speaker 4: that someone has to be naked or you know, uh,
- 8:12Speaker 4: it's it's not as it's not as hard to deal with.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Yeah. So so when you finally saw a black dye
- 8:18Speaker 5: my you know, you were you were showing a screening
- 8:20Speaker 5: of it, did you ask what did you think of
- 8:22Speaker 5: the movie? Initially, because I mean, it is a playoff
- 8:24Speaker 5: like the Grindhouse seventies movies, and and you know, being
- 8:28Speaker 5: a film nerd with no life, I really, you know,
- 8:30Speaker 5: got the movie right off the bat. I thought it
- 8:32Speaker 5: was hilarious. But I'm interested to know your thoughts. You know,
- 8:35Speaker 5: what was your first impressions of the movie.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Well, the first time I saw the film, I saw
- 8:40Speaker 4: it at Sundance Film Festival. I never went to the screen.
- 8:44Speaker 4: I mean it was it was the premiere there, and
- 8:47Speaker 4: to see myself in the big screen, h was amazing.
- 8:51Speaker 4: I was, I was, I don't know, I had a
- 8:55Speaker 4: eerie feeling, it was. It was amazing. And when I
- 8:57Speaker 4: saw the whole film, because I you know, I knew
- 8:59Speaker 4: it was a Kung Fu seventies, you know, black exploitation film,
- 9:05Speaker 4: I just, you know, I didn't see the whole film
- 9:08Speaker 4: because I only had those two days or few days
- 9:10Speaker 4: of shooting. And I absolutely loved it. I thought it
- 9:13Speaker 4: was hilarious because I'm you know, I'm I'm from California.
- 9:17Speaker 4: I grew up in the eighties nineties, so like the
- 9:19Speaker 4: whole you know, the style and the attitude and the slang.
- 9:23Speaker 4: I got it all. I understood it. I was laughing
- 9:26Speaker 4: the whole time it was. It was amazing. And plus
- 9:29Speaker 4: I love the whole Kung Fu thing too. It was amazing.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought it was. It was great as well.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Especially you know again, it was a throwback, this that
- 9:37Speaker 5: seventies grindhouse feel to it. And I'm glad that it
- 9:40Speaker 5: took a you know, a quote unquote risk with that movie,
- 9:43Speaker 5: because you know, nowadays everything either has to be a
- 9:45Speaker 5: reboot or it has to be an existing intellectual property.
- 9:50Speaker 5: And it's it's you know, whenever you see a new,
- 9:53Speaker 5: fresh movie like this come out.
- 9:56Speaker 3: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 10:02Speaker 3: and now back to the show.
- 10:05Speaker 5: It's too often that movies like this could just get
- 10:07Speaker 5: buried because you know that, you know, things happened by
- 10:10Speaker 5: by a panel and they go, oh, you know, black
- 10:13Speaker 5: dynamite or whatever. No one's gonna want watch that. But
- 10:15Speaker 5: I'm glad that it actually got the promotion that it
- 10:17Speaker 5: deserved because it was a fantastic film.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Oh yes, it was. You know, it's it's original. You know,
- 10:24Speaker 4: it's not you know, there there was. There weren't anti
- 10:27Speaker 4: parts where it was taken from another film or this
- 10:30Speaker 4: and that. It was just it was it was a collaboration,
- 10:33Speaker 4: but it was done very well. I mean it took
- 10:37Speaker 4: you know, it just got all these little parts of
- 10:40Speaker 4: history that that everybody, any American you know, like understands.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Yeah. It was very interesting, you know, Like I saw
- 10:50Speaker 4: the film a few times in America because there are
- 10:54Speaker 4: there were a few festivals, and the premiere was at
- 10:57Speaker 4: the Arc Light in Hollywood. I also attended the American
- 11:03Speaker 4: Delville Festival in France, and when they played the film
- 11:09Speaker 4: in front of the French people, uh, it was surprisingly
- 11:13Speaker 4: not funny for them. You you can you can hear,
- 11:17Speaker 4: like just so there were only two people laughing in
- 11:20Speaker 4: the whole theater and it was just me and the director.
- 11:23Speaker 4: It wasn't anyone else like it was. So it was
- 11:26Speaker 4: weird because they didn't understand the you know, the the
- 11:31Speaker 4: American you know humor per se, so you didn't hear.
- 11:36Speaker 4: They were just kind of watching it like what is this?
- 11:39Speaker 4: So it was weird, but it was it was very
- 11:42Speaker 4: interesting to see, you know, that movie in a different
- 11:45Speaker 4: country and their reaction. It was very it was funny.
- 11:49Speaker 5: Yeah, and that that brings up a good point just
- 11:51Speaker 5: about you know, the sort of cultural differences, you know,
- 11:53Speaker 5: between American humor and maybe French humor. You know, I
- 11:57Speaker 5: think it was I think it was John Carpenter who
- 12:00Speaker 5: said that in France he's a horror filmmaker. In uh,
- 12:05Speaker 5: in England he's a I'm sorry, and France he's an
- 12:07Speaker 5: all tour. In England he's a horror filmmaker, and in
- 12:09Speaker 5: America he's a bum. And basically what he meant by
- 12:12Speaker 5: that was they all have different interpretations of everything, and uh,
- 12:17Speaker 5: you know, John Carpenter's is a genius as well, and uh,
- 12:21Speaker 5: but it's just but it's just always interesting to see
- 12:23Speaker 5: those types of things. And as we speak about that, Charmaine,
- 12:26Speaker 5: one of the things that I heard about was that
- 12:29Speaker 5: movie studios now are thinking about releasing different cuts of
- 12:32Speaker 5: the different of the film, so like you might see
- 12:34Speaker 5: somewhere else, more often they than they already do. Basically
- 12:37Speaker 5: that means so that way he'll play Kate maybe audiences
- 12:40Speaker 5: in China, and it'll play Kate audiences in France and
- 12:43Speaker 5: play Kate audiences in Germany. That way, instead of just
- 12:46Speaker 5: trying to release the same thing. I mean, they already
- 12:47Speaker 5: do that anyway, but now I'm saying like more and
- 12:49Speaker 5: more so, and it's probably could have come to the
- 12:51Speaker 5: indie level as well, because you know, just so again
- 12:55Speaker 5: because now Netflix is everyone has Netflix nowadays, so so.
- 12:59Speaker 5: But but to avoid something like that where there was
- 13:01Speaker 5: almost like no laughter in the whole theater.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Oh yeah, it was funny. It was like they yeah,
- 13:08Speaker 4: they had no clue what you know why it was funny.
- 13:12Speaker 4: And you know, like the scene where you know, like
- 13:15Speaker 4: they were at the restaurant and how they discovered chicken
- 13:18Speaker 4: and waffles, you know, you know, I don't know if
- 13:20Speaker 4: you remember that scene where when they said chicken and
- 13:22Speaker 4: waffles and we know, chicken and waffles. You know, it's
- 13:25Speaker 4: it's a very American, you know thing. And in France
- 13:29Speaker 4: they were just like h okay, and they're just like,
- 13:33Speaker 4: oh god. I had to like hide myself from laughing
- 13:37Speaker 4: because I know the movie is funny, and the people
- 13:40Speaker 4: around me were just like, what's so funny? So it
- 13:43Speaker 4: was yeah, but it was interesting, It was it was fun.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Yeah, and I'm glad you had a good experience, you know,
- 13:48Speaker 5: with it, because you know, sometimes you know, on first
- 13:52Speaker 5: movie sets like that. So again, like I was saying
- 13:54Speaker 5: about down times and things like that, some people can
- 13:57Speaker 5: sort of come away and be like, yeah, I did
- 13:59Speaker 5: that one to never again. And I'll give you an
- 14:01Speaker 5: example of that. I was on a film set run time,
- 14:04Speaker 5: and we had to be in a bar and this
- 14:06Speaker 5: bar saying this is years ago when I uh, I
- 14:08Speaker 5: was doing background work and I actually was in this
- 14:11Speaker 5: bar in the middle of August and here in Philadelphia,
- 14:14Speaker 5: and it was so hot and they had to turn
- 14:16Speaker 5: off the air conditioner in the bar. When I walked out,
- 14:21Speaker 5: I literally looked like I jumped at a pool. And
- 14:23Speaker 5: I got back out, I was like, my shirt, it
- 14:26Speaker 5: was a blue shirt I was wearing. You could like,
- 14:28Speaker 5: it was just all this yeah, yeah, And a couple
- 14:32Speaker 5: of people were like, hey, this is you know, our
- 14:34Speaker 5: first thing, Like is this what this is like? Because
- 14:36Speaker 5: we're never going to do it again, and I was like, no,
- 14:39Speaker 5: this is just a bad situation.
- 14:41Speaker 4: You know.
- 14:41Speaker 5: So as you sure, you know, as you completed Black Dynamite,
- 14:44Speaker 5: you know, you know, what, did you want to go
- 14:47Speaker 5: back into into into into the film world or maybe
- 14:50Speaker 5: even TV. Did you you say to maybe your agent
- 14:52Speaker 5: manager at the time if you had one, Hey, I
- 14:54Speaker 5: want to get more parts like this.
- 14:56Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I did after after I had that experience,
- 15:02Speaker 4: you know, I I've kind of I think during that time,
- 15:05Speaker 4: I think it was two thousand and eight nine, I
- 15:07Speaker 4: was at the level of my adult career where I
- 15:10Speaker 4: didn't have to shoot as much. You know, I've already
- 15:14Speaker 4: built a name for myself. So I had different goals
- 15:19Speaker 4: of you know, changing my career, you know, crossing over,
- 15:22Speaker 4: you know, talking to my managers and agents and telling them, Okay,
- 15:26Speaker 4: if there are any you know, mainstream you know television films,
- 15:31Speaker 4: you know, bring them my way. I you know, I
- 15:34Speaker 4: didn't want to do scenes anymore. They're you know, like
- 15:37Speaker 4: boy girl scenes. But I was only particular to doing
- 15:40Speaker 4: just girl girl scenes. So I slowly changed my career.
- 15:44Speaker 4: And I also featured dance, so I you know, I
- 15:47Speaker 4: traveled a lot, you know, once or twice a month
- 15:49Speaker 4: feature dancing all over you know, all over the country.
- 15:52Speaker 4: So that took up a lot of my time. That way,
- 15:55Speaker 4: I didn't have to shoot adult film and I can
- 15:57Speaker 4: focus on you know, crossing over. So I I did,
- 16:03Speaker 4: you know, I I shot a lot of uh, you know,
- 16:05Speaker 4: for Cinemax, you know, the the I was a series
- 16:08Speaker 4: regular on you know on you know those sex what
- 16:12Speaker 4: is it? I forgot those It's been a while here,
- 16:16Speaker 4: you know, the the softcore you know, the Skin of
- 16:20Speaker 4: Max stuff. So that even though it wasn't I mean,
- 16:23Speaker 4: it was mainstream, but you know, I I I was,
- 16:27Speaker 4: you know, I was interested in doing more of film.
- 16:31Speaker 4: I liked the whole world of film, especially indie film.
- 16:34Speaker 4: So I found another agent that was specializing in in
- 16:40Speaker 4: just film and I did a lot of you know,
- 16:42Speaker 4: I tried, I did casting. I cast it for some parts,
- 16:47Speaker 4: but it never worked out. I don't know, I was
- 16:49Speaker 4: never picked or anything. So the next film that I did,
- 16:55Speaker 4: it was The Face of Evil and it was actually
- 16:59Speaker 4: a friend of mine. He was you know, he was
- 17:01Speaker 4: involved in in the mainstream industry, and he asked me
- 17:05Speaker 4: if I was interested or just can you read for
- 17:08Speaker 4: this film that I'm you know, my friend is doing
- 17:10Speaker 4: he's directing. And I said, okay, I'll give it a try.
- 17:13Speaker 4: And the director asked me, would you like there was
- 17:17Speaker 4: two parts when it was the main role or this
- 17:21Speaker 4: other role. And he told me that the other role
- 17:25Speaker 4: fit me best because of my personality, because he says,
- 17:29Speaker 4: I can bring it out more. So I just I
- 17:32Speaker 4: also took that as an opportunity like it was. It
- 17:34Speaker 4: was very I don't know, like the two films that
- 17:37Speaker 4: I've done, they've came to me, which I'm grateful for.
- 17:41Speaker 4: So I never really had the opportunity to really you know,
- 17:45Speaker 4: like other actors, you know, where they have to cast
- 17:48Speaker 4: and then they get picked, but you have to do
- 17:50Speaker 4: more casting, you know how like they like a reoccur
- 17:53Speaker 4: you know, they have to cast again or read again.
- 17:56Speaker 4: I never had that opportunity.
- 17:58Speaker 5: So when we talk about casting, Sherman, I wanted to
- 18:01Speaker 5: actually ask did you ever found yourself maybe you know,
- 18:04Speaker 5: type cast or maybe given similar roles and meaning like
- 18:09Speaker 5: you know, I've had friends of mine who are from
- 18:12Speaker 5: the Middle East, they're their Middle Eastern background, and they said, Dave,
- 18:15Speaker 5: the only things that we ever get are two things.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Number one is like an Indian shop clerk, or number
- 18:22Speaker 5: two is playing like a suspicious terrorist type uh. And
- 18:25Speaker 5: I and they they always they always talk to me
- 18:27Speaker 5: about that, And I just wanted to ask, you know,
- 18:29Speaker 5: do you ever find yourself typecast and in roles maybe
- 18:33Speaker 5: at all? Or do you do you do you not
- 18:35Speaker 5: experience that.
- 18:36Speaker 4: I I think I've gotten typecast before a few times,
- 18:41Speaker 4: you know, Asian girl either Asian or and and I'm
- 18:44Speaker 4: you know, I'm comfortable doing nudity. I'm also and yeah,
- 18:49Speaker 4: just a sex you know, like if I could, if
- 18:51Speaker 4: I'm able to show my boobs or you know, be naked.
- 18:55Speaker 4: H so, but not really well yeah that's it. And
- 18:59Speaker 4: then like when you know, the new that other film
- 19:02Speaker 4: Catch twenty two, it was an Asian girl, but you know,
- 19:05Speaker 4: I was approached with that that character, so I never
- 19:09Speaker 4: really had to I mean, I never had to cast
- 19:11Speaker 4: for that either, which is hey, that was nice, you know,
- 19:14Speaker 4: but yeah, I I never really experienced it, you know.
- 19:18Speaker 5: So Okay, now, I mean I always just wanted to
- 19:21Speaker 5: ask that because, you know, again because I was well,
- 19:23Speaker 5: because the reason I brought that I was because I
- 19:25Speaker 5: had a friend of mine who was bringing that up
- 19:27Speaker 5: again about that whole thing about being being sort of typecasted,
- 19:30Speaker 5: and I just saw I always you know, I always
- 19:33Speaker 5: asked that to actors too, because sometimes even when a
- 19:35Speaker 5: person plays a bad guy, you know, they never get
- 19:38Speaker 5: out of playing a bad guy. There always a bad guy.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Well yeah, you know, I mean right now, you know
- 19:43Speaker 4: I I you know, I'm comfortable showing my body, you know,
- 19:48Speaker 4: and I'm Asian. So that's pretty much my category. Right now.
- 19:56Speaker 3: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor,
- 20:02Speaker 3: and now back to the show.
- 20:05Speaker 4: And the two films that I know I'm you know,
- 20:07Speaker 4: I've i've naked, and you know I'm Asian. But you know,
- 20:13Speaker 4: it is what it is, you know, it's it's a
- 20:16Speaker 4: part sometimes. I mean, you can't. I can't change into
- 20:19Speaker 4: a Latina or a black girl also, you know what
- 20:22Speaker 4: I mean.
- 20:22Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, Well, my my prediction is this, in the
- 20:25Speaker 5: next I think five to actually probably serving that probably
- 20:29Speaker 5: next three to five years, I think the the roles
- 20:32Speaker 5: for Asians are going to skyrocket because they're the the
- 20:36Speaker 5: market over there. Japan's always you know, Japan and Japan.
- 20:41Speaker 5: But China they have the largest film industry in the world.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Sorry they are really yeah they actually I'm sorry. Actually
- 20:47Speaker 5: Bollywood is still number one, but but China's coming it
- 20:49Speaker 5: was fast becoming number one. And then you have obviously
- 20:54Speaker 5: Vietnam's on the rise. South Korea is is also uh
- 20:57Speaker 5: they have a wonderful film market. Some of the best
- 21:00Speaker 5: filmmakers the world actually come from South Korea, and I
- 21:02Speaker 5: mean it's just been That's why I think you're going
- 21:05Speaker 5: to start seeing. And then again I mentioned Bollywood, which
- 21:08Speaker 5: is in India. I meant that I'm predicting there's going
- 21:11Speaker 5: to be a lot more different types of roles also
- 21:14Speaker 5: because if Hollywood wants to keep exporting movies to those
- 21:17Speaker 5: big markets, they're going to have to appeal to those markets.
- 21:20Speaker 5: So that's why I think those Asian Asian roles are
- 21:22Speaker 5: just going to not be so stereotyped anymore and they're
- 21:25Speaker 5: going to be more wide open.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm seeing that. I'm seeing, you know, because I
- 21:33Speaker 4: mean the world is getting bigger, and you know, the
- 21:36Speaker 4: attention is you know, there's a lot, there's a bigger
- 21:38Speaker 4: it's a bigger world out there. Actually, there's a former
- 21:42Speaker 4: adult film star. Her name is Sunny Leone. Oh yeah,
- 21:46Speaker 4: she's huge in Bollywood. She's an actress, she does the mainstream.
- 21:52Speaker 4: She's there, she's like, she's so famous there and it's crazy.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Surprisingly she came from the adult and they've accepted her,
- 22:01Speaker 4: you know, and changed her career and now she's a
- 22:03Speaker 4: big superstar there. It's amazing.
- 22:05Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, Yeah, I mean, I'm sorry to me
- 22:08Speaker 5: to cut you off.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Oh no, no, go ahead.
- 22:10Speaker 5: I was just I mean, as we talked about something Leonne,
- 22:12Speaker 5: you know, she made the transition from you know, adult
- 22:14Speaker 5: films to to mainstream. Uh you know Sasha great too,
- 22:17Speaker 5: she yea as well. Yeah, yeah, and she's been in
- 22:21Speaker 5: a in a ton of stuff. I was actually watching
- 22:23Speaker 5: a horror movie and she just appeared. I was like, oh,
- 22:26Speaker 5: there's Sasha. He was like, I didn't even know she
- 22:28Speaker 5: was in this, but yeah, you know it's it's uh,
- 22:31Speaker 5: I forget the girl's name. It'll come back to me
- 22:34Speaker 5: as soon as we're off off this call, but off
- 22:37Speaker 5: the podcast. But I remember, oh, Tracy Lawds.
- 22:40Speaker 4: That's what I was thinking, Oh, yes, Tracy Laurids. She's yeah,
- 22:42Speaker 4: she's one of the original Yeah, the original, yes, crossover, Yeah.
- 22:47Speaker 5: Because I see her. You know, she's in a ton
- 22:49Speaker 5: of movies now, she's in a lot of horror movies now.
- 22:51Speaker 5: But but yeah, I mean, it's just you know, just
- 22:54Speaker 5: I was just giving me examples again as we talked about,
- 22:56Speaker 5: you know, sort of making that transition, and there's just
- 23:00Speaker 5: popped in my head. But you know, just back to
- 23:02Speaker 5: your career, Charmone, you mentioned Face of Evil. You know,
- 23:05Speaker 5: how did you go about getting that role? Was did
- 23:07Speaker 5: your did your manager sort of find you the audition
- 23:09Speaker 5: and you went and you auditioned and got the part.
- 23:12Speaker 4: No. Actually, a friend of mine, he's a publicist and
- 23:17Speaker 4: he works in the mainstream industry, and he was reading
- 23:21Speaker 4: for that, uh, that particular script and he asked me,
- 23:25Speaker 4: his friend, that's the director is looking for, you know, uh,
- 23:31Speaker 4: just a few people to read for, you know, these
- 23:33Speaker 4: two roles. And he asked me if I was interested
- 23:36Speaker 4: in reading for the roles. And I read two different
- 23:39Speaker 4: characters and the director gave me one part, and uh,
- 23:46Speaker 4: you know, I was honored. I was like, Okay, great,
- 23:48Speaker 4: this is another film, another opportunity. And it was pretty big.
- 23:53Speaker 4: I mean, there was a lot of characters I got
- 23:55Speaker 4: to meet, uh because it was It's a good film.
- 23:58Speaker 4: It's a very interesting film. I've never done a zombie film.
- 24:01Speaker 4: I've never done like anything horror, horrific or anything. And
- 24:06Speaker 4: especially with you know, makeup, you know, and just playing
- 24:12Speaker 4: a role that I've never played before, like just ugly
- 24:15Speaker 4: and zombie and making weird noises. I really had to
- 24:19Speaker 4: do the whole of that and it was it was
- 24:21Speaker 4: it was nice. It was very interesting. I was I'm
- 24:24Speaker 4: glad to have that opportunity. A friend of mine, you know,
- 24:28Speaker 4: gave me that opportunity. So it wasn't very hard. I
- 24:31Speaker 4: was lucky to you know, get that part. Uh. And
- 24:36Speaker 4: it was fun. It was a really really fun, interesting
- 24:39Speaker 4: film to shoot. We shot in like a really broken
- 24:43Speaker 4: down house. Every scene was a night scene, so we
- 24:47Speaker 4: had to start at like, you know, in the evening
- 24:50Speaker 4: till like six in the morning, and during that I
- 24:53Speaker 4: think we shot it. I shot it for like a
- 24:55Speaker 4: few three weeks or something, and one week I was
- 25:01Speaker 4: in jury duty and it was the same week where
- 25:05Speaker 4: I had to wear like zombie makeup. And it was
- 25:09Speaker 4: so difficult because I told the director one night, I said,
- 25:12Speaker 4: I'm sorry, I have to get off. I had to
- 25:14Speaker 4: get off early because I have jury duty at like
- 25:17Speaker 4: seven in the morning, and he, you know, and you
- 25:19Speaker 4: know how directors are, they want you to stay until
- 25:22Speaker 4: they finished something. So I ended up staying really late.
- 25:25Speaker 4: And I mean I had to drive home in the
- 25:30Speaker 4: sun with like zombie makeup, and I literally looked so
- 25:33Speaker 4: scary driving home with a scary face. Oh my god,
- 25:38Speaker 4: I look like I look like a crackhead. Like seriously
- 25:40Speaker 4: driving home. You know, you know, zombie makeup. It's just
- 25:43Speaker 4: like white face with like just oh my god, lot,
- 25:47Speaker 4: you know, veins everywhere.
- 25:48Speaker 2: It was.
- 25:48Speaker 4: It was crazy. And then I had to go to
- 25:50Speaker 4: jury duty. It was amazing.
- 25:53Speaker 5: So when you alluted in for jury duty, did they
- 25:55Speaker 5: just say, oh, we're going to pasture?
- 25:56Speaker 4: I mean no. And it's funny because once they said
- 26:01Speaker 4: that and I thought, you you know, sometimes when you're
- 26:03Speaker 4: in jury duty, you know, okay, you know there's like
- 26:07Speaker 4: thirty people and you know they only have to pick
- 26:09Speaker 4: like twelve, and hello, they picked me. They picked me.
- 26:13Speaker 4: I was I got so lucky. I was one of
- 26:15Speaker 4: the twelve people and I had to go back again.
- 26:18Speaker 4: It was crazy. But once we got to court, they
- 26:22Speaker 4: dismissed the case, so I got, you know, even more
- 26:24Speaker 4: lucky to not go further. So you know that was
- 26:28Speaker 4: that was good. Oh but yeah, it was. It was
- 26:33Speaker 4: a very interesting maybe the I actually there were a
- 26:36Speaker 4: few moments, you know, because I had to be in
- 26:39Speaker 4: makeup and we had the makeup artists. He was Japanese
- 26:43Speaker 4: and he specialized in you know those you know, the
- 26:47Speaker 4: scary I don't know, those zombie scary makeup and at
- 26:53Speaker 4: night it was just, you know, looking at myself in
- 26:55Speaker 4: the mirror. I you know, I would scare myself, like
- 26:58Speaker 4: like when I would walk into the restroom and had
- 27:00Speaker 4: to peek and I would wash my hand. I look up,
- 27:03Speaker 4: I'm like, oh my god, I can't look at my face.
- 27:04Speaker 4: I can't look at myself. It's just so scary.
- 27:09Speaker 5: It's funny because I actually was was a background in
- 27:11Speaker 5: a horror movie once and I was like, I was
- 27:14Speaker 5: a corpse in a pile of dead bodies, and I
- 27:16Speaker 5: had like this fake blood all over me. So I
- 27:19Speaker 5: got it, you know. So after the shoot was over,
- 27:22Speaker 5: I thought I had you know, I took like this
- 27:23Speaker 5: wet wipe type thing. I wipe my face, and I
- 27:25Speaker 5: thought I got it all done. So on the as
- 27:27Speaker 5: we're driving home, I asked my friend, I'm like, listen,
- 27:30Speaker 5: let me let's stop at this little uh this little
- 27:32Speaker 5: like thrift store, uh slash bodego, whatever you want to
- 27:35Speaker 5: call it. And I was like, I want to grab
- 27:36Speaker 5: a drink. And I walk in and the one guy
- 27:38Speaker 5: behind the counter just like looks up and staring at me. Well,
- 27:42Speaker 5: I was like what the hell. I was like, what
- 27:44Speaker 5: do I got something on my face? Or something I had.
- 27:46Speaker 5: I still had blood and stuff all in my hair.
- 27:49Speaker 5: I looked like I was in probably a car accident,
- 27:50Speaker 5: and just sort of walked in and it ate. Oh
- 27:54Speaker 5: luckily though it's Philadelphia. I just kind of blended in eventually.
- 27:56Speaker 4: But oh my goodness. Right, See, I was in LA
- 28:00Speaker 4: and I was in a car and they're just like, okay,
- 28:02Speaker 4: that's you know, and it's kind of acceptable. It's like, okay,
- 28:04Speaker 4: this is an actor, you know, as an actress, you know,
- 28:07Speaker 4: but yeah, it's isn't it funny you just you just
- 28:11Speaker 4: forget that you look like that.
- 28:13Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, really it's it's it's sort of like at
- 28:16Speaker 5: a sight out of mind.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a good film. It was really the characters,
- 28:22Speaker 4: you know, the the other my fellow actors, they were
- 28:25Speaker 4: all mainstream actors. Janie Bernadette, she's she was the lead role.
- 28:31Speaker 4: She does she she does a lot of horror films.
- 28:34Speaker 4: She she's from, you know, she comes from that side
- 28:37Speaker 4: of the world of all horror films, and you know,
- 28:40Speaker 4: she's used to it. So she kind of taught me
- 28:42Speaker 4: a little bit because you know, being a zombie, playing
- 28:45Speaker 4: a zombie character, you have to you know, for me,
- 28:50Speaker 4: my experience is to look glamorous and smile and you know,
- 28:54Speaker 4: like have seduction in my eyes and all this stuff.
- 28:57Speaker 4: So I had to remove all of that and direct
- 29:00Speaker 4: was like, I want you to sneer, and I'm like,
- 29:02Speaker 4: what's sneer? He goes, just sneer. This is it's like
- 29:05Speaker 4: a sound and you gotta go, you know, like just
- 29:08Speaker 4: sneer like a zombie. And I'm like, how do you
- 29:11Speaker 4: do that? So he's like, come on, you gotta be serious,
- 29:14Speaker 4: and I'm like, oh my god, I have to. And
- 29:17Speaker 4: I had to get into this weird zombie role, you know,
- 29:21Speaker 4: I and I did. It was nice. It was very
- 29:25Speaker 4: I'm glad that I can, you know, I'm able to change,
- 29:28Speaker 4: you know, my this character or my you know, the
- 29:33Speaker 4: side of me and go in a different direction. Yeah,
- 29:37Speaker 4: it was. It was very nice.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Yeah, it's always fun when ever we were able to
- 29:41Speaker 5: sort of step into a character and try out new things,
- 29:43Speaker 5: you know, it's always it's always sort of great too.
- 29:46Speaker 5: That's why as again we go back to sort of typecasting.
- 29:49Speaker 5: That's why, you know, if you're always playing a bad guy,
- 29:52Speaker 5: you sort of have to it's a little bit more
- 29:53Speaker 5: difficult to try new things. Because again, you're always a
- 29:56Speaker 5: bad guy.
- 29:58Speaker 3: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 30:04Speaker 3: and now back to the show.
- 30:07Speaker 5: But when you're able to sort of step into different characters,
- 30:09Speaker 5: it's great to being able to try out this stuff,
- 30:11Speaker 5: like you know, obviously being able to play a zombie
- 30:13Speaker 5: and finding out, you know, almost beyond pantomiming, you have
- 30:17Speaker 5: to sort of come up with all of this almost
- 30:18Speaker 5: like a uh, you know, on the spot.
- 30:21Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and then I had to die, you know,
- 30:24Speaker 4: even dying, you know, I have to do like the
- 30:26Speaker 4: little shake and the eyes rolling back, and you know
- 30:31Speaker 4: that was very interesting to do. Yeah, it was fun.
- 30:36Speaker 4: And then blood coming out of my mouth, you know,
- 30:38Speaker 4: like spitting it out, and you know, just it was
- 30:42Speaker 4: very fun. I loved it. I loved I loved all
- 30:44Speaker 4: that with you know, special effects, blood and contacts and
- 30:50Speaker 4: you know, it was it was fun. I loved it.
- 30:53Speaker 5: Yeah, And I'm glad you mentioned that too, because sometimes
- 30:56Speaker 5: again you have to put fake blood in your mouth.
- 30:58Speaker 5: And I remember I was on a set one up
- 31:00Speaker 5: and somebody actually said, he goes, I can't take the
- 31:02Speaker 5: fake blood, and then and everyone was like, trust this,
- 31:05Speaker 5: We're you're only gonna have it in there for like
- 31:06Speaker 5: five seconds. We're just gonna roll and shoot with it.
- 31:09Speaker 5: And he goes, all right, fine, and he agreed to it,
- 31:13Speaker 5: and that blood he had to do it so many
- 31:14Speaker 5: times and it was like his teeth row a red
- 31:16Speaker 5: by eye and then he was like, he goes, yeah,
- 31:18Speaker 5: that was five seconds all right, but but he had
- 31:21Speaker 5: a good laugh afterwards. But again, it's stuff like that,
- 31:24Speaker 5: you know. That's why you know, I always ask about
- 31:26Speaker 5: different film experiences because it's always it's always fun to
- 31:29Speaker 5: hear stuff like that, you know.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Yeah, well you know sometimes they say, oh yeah, you know,
- 31:33Speaker 4: just leave it in your mouth for a while and
- 31:35Speaker 4: we're gonna do it, and you actually are just sitting
- 31:37Speaker 4: there and you're just like you want to throw up,
- 31:40Speaker 4: like it just tastes nasty, you know, and you're just like,
- 31:43Speaker 4: oh yeah, but it's fun. After that, it's like, Okay,
- 31:49Speaker 4: I loved it. I loved it so.
- 31:51Speaker 5: So so Shure Mane. After you know, you finished Face
- 31:54Speaker 5: of Evil, you know, you got to work on Catch
- 31:56Speaker 5: twenty two, which is how we met through Josh. Josh, Yeah,
- 32:01Speaker 5: and I wanted to ask, how did you go about
- 32:04Speaker 5: getting this role? Did you sort of you know, have
- 32:06Speaker 5: it again, have a connection through your network or is
- 32:08Speaker 5: this something that you had to sort of audition for.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Yeah, my my agent he he gave me a call
- 32:15Speaker 4: and he said that there was a mainstream uh role
- 32:19Speaker 4: for you that you need to read for. And I
- 32:22Speaker 4: think I was traveling at the time, and I think
- 32:25Speaker 4: I I think it was during the time that I
- 32:27Speaker 4: was quitting the industry. I you know, I wanted to
- 32:31Speaker 4: retire in the adult industry. But this is He's like,
- 32:35Speaker 4: this is a mainstream film, you know, would you be interested?
- 32:38Speaker 4: And I said, of course. Uh. So during that time
- 32:42Speaker 4: I casted for the role. He you know, it was
- 32:46Speaker 4: he he was in New York. So I had to
- 32:49Speaker 4: read my part, uh and I had to you know,
- 32:52Speaker 4: tape in on you know, video and send it to
- 32:54Speaker 4: him to see if I, you know, fit the part.
- 32:58Speaker 4: And I think I've read it a few times until
- 33:02Speaker 4: Josh said, okay, you have the part for the role
- 33:05Speaker 4: and I got the role. But during that time after that,
- 33:10Speaker 4: after I got the role, I think it took a
- 33:13Speaker 4: while for the film two or the production to start.
- 33:18Speaker 4: It took I think a few years. We had to
- 33:21Speaker 4: build the film, you know, like build some funding and
- 33:27Speaker 4: you know, I helped also promote the film funding through
- 33:32Speaker 4: my you know, my social media, and you know, I
- 33:35Speaker 4: was dedicated to it. I said, anytime you guys are ready,
- 33:38Speaker 4: I you know, I'll be there and ready. H He
- 33:42Speaker 4: sent me the script and I read the whole script.
- 33:46Speaker 4: It was very interesting, so I you know, I I
- 33:50Speaker 4: wasn't really prepared until the product. Finally, the production was
- 33:54Speaker 4: ready after I think it was after two years or something.
- 33:57Speaker 4: And during I traveled quite some time during those two years,
- 34:03Speaker 4: and I think the finally the year we shot the film,
- 34:08Speaker 4: I was I was in between moving from a different country,
- 34:12Speaker 4: and it was it was kind of bizarre because you know,
- 34:16Speaker 4: I was going back to la and he said, the
- 34:18Speaker 4: film is finally ready to shoot in May. And and
- 34:22Speaker 4: this time I was, I fell in love. I had,
- 34:25Speaker 4: you know, my fiance, and I, oh, he was my
- 34:28Speaker 4: boyfriend at the time, and you know, we were I
- 34:32Speaker 4: was in the verge of moving either, you know, from
- 34:36Speaker 4: Los Angeles to France, and I was going back and forth,
- 34:42Speaker 4: flying back and forth from the States to France. And
- 34:47Speaker 4: and then in May, finally, you know, we were ready.
- 34:50Speaker 4: But I wasn't ready because you know, this role, this character,
- 34:56Speaker 4: she is a troubled girl. You know, you know, it
- 35:01Speaker 4: had a lot of drugs involved and what else. Yeah,
- 35:06Speaker 4: she's just like just torn up, I mean beat up.
- 35:10Speaker 4: And also she dies, So you know, I thought it
- 35:13Speaker 4: was going to be like, you know, a little quick
- 35:16Speaker 4: little scene. But you know, they needed me for about
- 35:21Speaker 4: I think like a week and a half. So every day,
- 35:25Speaker 4: you know, like I kind of got nervous. I said, Okay,
- 35:27Speaker 4: is there anything that you know, what do I need
- 35:29Speaker 4: to do? How do I need to prepare? So Josh,
- 35:32Speaker 4: you know, he asked, me, okay, do a little research.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Watch some films you know about heroin and and drugs
- 35:39Speaker 4: and you know, and and some you know, like just
- 35:42Speaker 4: thriller movies. And then I started thinking, like, oh my god,
- 35:46Speaker 4: this is going to be you know, I have to
- 35:48Speaker 4: play a totally different character, like another like scary, weird,
- 35:53Speaker 4: you know, thriller film, and I have to I don't know.
- 35:59Speaker 4: I just didn't know what I was gonna get myself into.
- 36:01Speaker 4: So I kind of got a little nervous. But but he,
- 36:06Speaker 4: you know, he assured me that you know, it's okay,
- 36:08Speaker 4: you know, don't worry, it's not really you know, it's
- 36:10Speaker 4: not going to be too crazy. So when we shot
- 36:13Speaker 4: the film in New York, I met the rest of
- 36:17Speaker 4: the characters. Everybody was amazing, Josh, you know, everybody was.
- 36:22Speaker 4: They made me feel comfortable because I it was you know,
- 36:24Speaker 4: like you know, there are were some parts where I
- 36:28Speaker 4: had to get beat up by all of them, like
- 36:30Speaker 4: there was you know, because the movie there were just
- 36:34Speaker 4: different parts of they didn't know how I died, so
- 36:38Speaker 4: you know, there were different scenes of me having to
- 36:40Speaker 4: be you know, brutally abused or killed, and so, you know,
- 36:46Speaker 4: I it just didn't make me feel I'm a very
- 36:48Speaker 4: positive person, so I just didn't want to I don't know,
- 36:51Speaker 4: I've I wanted to feel a little comfortable with that.
- 36:54Speaker 4: So I I, you know, I asked Josh, like or
- 36:58Speaker 4: and the director, I mean, and the right Shannie. You know,
- 37:01Speaker 4: is there something like you can you guys have like
- 37:04Speaker 4: I don't know, donuts around because you know, like that
- 37:07Speaker 4: makes me feel you know, it makes me feel like
- 37:10Speaker 4: kind of happy and good. You know, is it possible
- 37:13Speaker 4: you can have some donuts around because you know, like
- 37:15Speaker 4: that feeling of just like this girl you know, I
- 37:18Speaker 4: don't know, she just it just didn't it didn't make
- 37:20Speaker 4: me feel happy. So they had donuts for me ready
- 37:24Speaker 4: until you know, after I got beat up, I had like,
- 37:26Speaker 4: you know, here's your donuts. So I had a nice
- 37:29Speaker 4: donor and I was back to you know, being happy again.
- 37:32Speaker 5: What kind of.
- 37:34Speaker 4: Uh well there he had. They got me a dunkin
- 37:36Speaker 4: Donuts so that I had like a variety of like
- 37:39Speaker 4: glazed chocolate and sprinkles. So I had a variety like
- 37:44Speaker 4: a what is it? What is it? The bear claw?
- 37:47Speaker 4: I had all of that. It was really good. So, yeah,
- 37:51Speaker 4: it was It was interesting. It was very interesting this role.
- 37:56Speaker 4: Uh you know, like shooting a you know, I've never
- 37:58Speaker 4: i mean having a ringe. I mean it was a
- 38:00Speaker 4: fake syringe. But he's like, okay, you got to do
- 38:03Speaker 4: it this way. This is you know, they have a
- 38:05Speaker 4: they had like a little bag and you know it's
- 38:07Speaker 4: like a it's a process, you know. And I had,
- 38:11Speaker 4: you know, there was things that I had to do,
- 38:13Speaker 4: you know, and I didn't know how to you know,
- 38:17Speaker 4: it's crazy. I had to do all of these little
- 38:19Speaker 4: things for you know, the scene. And I said, okay,
- 38:23Speaker 4: you know you got to do this and you gotta
- 38:24Speaker 4: do that. So it was very interesting to do. And
- 38:27Speaker 4: then I had to die, you know, I I and
- 38:30Speaker 4: I had to have makeup again, like like I was dead.
- 38:34Speaker 4: I had to have bruises on my face. I was
- 38:38Speaker 4: you know, they painted my face kind of white, you know,
- 38:40Speaker 4: because I was I was pretty much dead in the tub.
- 38:44Speaker 4: And it was funny because you know, there was there
- 38:49Speaker 4: were there were a few instances where I had to,
- 38:51Speaker 4: you know, use the restroom and I would scare myself again,
- 38:55Speaker 4: Like I would go in the bathroom at night because
- 38:57Speaker 4: you know, and then the bathroom was downstairs, and I
- 39:00Speaker 4: would forget that I had makeup on my face, and
- 39:02Speaker 4: I would just scare myself again, you know, looking in
- 39:05Speaker 4: the mirror like, oh my god, I'm back at it again.
- 39:11Speaker 4: You know.
- 39:11Speaker 5: Yeah, It's at least you didn't have to go outside
- 39:15Speaker 5: there or go to Jewey duty for that one.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah. I know. It is funny
- 39:21Speaker 4: because I had to be in makeup like that all day,
- 39:24Speaker 4: not only just evening, I mean even during the day.
- 39:28Speaker 4: So like at lunch too, Like We'll all have lunch
- 39:31Speaker 4: together and I have my robe on and I have
- 39:33Speaker 4: my death makeup, and I'm just like, hey, guys, you know,
- 39:39Speaker 4: outside and we would eat outside and just people walking
- 39:42Speaker 4: around like looking at like, who's this girl? My god?
- 39:45Speaker 5: But it was fun, just another day in New York City, right.
- 39:48Speaker 4: Exactly right, But it was really much fun. I had
- 39:54Speaker 4: a great time.
- 39:56Speaker 3: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 40:02Speaker 3: and now back to the show.
- 40:05Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, this is how I was speaking to Josh,
- 40:07Speaker 5: you know, about how this whole movie sort of came together.
- 40:09Speaker 5: You know you mentioned that, you know about two years. Uh,
- 40:12Speaker 5: you know, they they he was actually talking about that
- 40:14Speaker 5: in his interview about how it came together, you know,
- 40:17Speaker 5: finding the money, making sure the script is set, uh,
- 40:20Speaker 5: you know, because that's that's always the big thing for
- 40:22Speaker 5: for films, especially indie film, is finding that money to
- 40:25Speaker 5: be able to make it, to to payper you know,
- 40:28Speaker 5: not only to pay everyone you know about to pay
- 40:30Speaker 5: your cast, but also pay your crew, locations, insurance and
- 40:33Speaker 5: you And it's just sort of it can it can
- 40:36Speaker 5: you know go on for that for you know a while,
- 40:39Speaker 5: even years? Uh, because it's just that's one of the
- 40:41Speaker 5: tricky things now about about it's always been about indie film,
- 40:44Speaker 5: is is being able to find enough money to make
- 40:47Speaker 5: it and you know, sort of without making any sort
- 40:49Speaker 5: of artistic compromises.
- 40:51Speaker 4: MM hmm.
- 40:53Speaker 5: Yeah. So it's you know, I'm glad you're you're you know,
- 40:56Speaker 5: you're able to to be and I'm glad that you
- 40:58Speaker 5: were able to make it. And I wanted to ask you,
- 41:00Speaker 5: have you seen a final cut of the film yet?
- 41:03Speaker 4: Oh? Yes, yes, yes I have. We there there were
- 41:08Speaker 4: there was a film festival in Miami last year. I
- 41:12Speaker 4: attended that. It was our first film festival. H so,
- 41:18Speaker 4: you know, I it was you know, I live here
- 41:20Speaker 4: in France now, so it wasn't It wasn't a long flight.
- 41:25Speaker 4: It was about a six hours, seven hour flight to Miami,
- 41:28Speaker 4: so you know, I was able to attend, and it
- 41:31Speaker 4: was it was not It was amazing to see it,
- 41:34Speaker 4: you know on the screen. It was really cool. I
- 41:36Speaker 4: loved it. It was they've done it. You know. He
- 41:39Speaker 4: did a really great job on the edits and he
- 41:44Speaker 4: also got a lot of amazing, you know, good parts,
- 41:47Speaker 4: you know, like my good sides, you know, my back
- 41:50Speaker 4: and my hair. Everything he did he did really good.
- 41:53Speaker 4: So I'm very happy about that.
- 41:56Speaker 5: And hopefully the audience responded to it, not like what
- 42:00Speaker 5: they would have with in France with black Dynamite, So
- 42:02Speaker 5: hopefully the audience that.
- 42:04Speaker 4: I hope so yeah, yeah, I hope. So. I think
- 42:09Speaker 4: a lot of people can probably relate to this film.
- 42:13Speaker 4: You know, it's it's it's it's a horror or it's
- 42:15Speaker 4: a thriller film, you know, comedy, it's yeah, it's just
- 42:20Speaker 4: particular because you know every country they have different humors,
- 42:23Speaker 4: but this is a thriller, and I think a lot
- 42:25Speaker 4: of uh, you know, everybody around the world can kind
- 42:28Speaker 4: of relate to, you know, some parts of this film.
- 42:33Speaker 5: Yeah, and I as we can sort of talk about
- 42:35Speaker 5: how everyone had Netflix and you know, any film, you know,
- 42:38Speaker 5: there's universal themes are more important now than ever, and
- 42:41Speaker 5: universal themes or you know, feelings of regret, revenge, all
- 42:45Speaker 5: those things that that no matter where you come from,
- 42:47Speaker 5: everybody can identify with in one way or another, or
- 42:50Speaker 5: you know, whether they've happened to them or they know
- 42:52Speaker 5: someone that this has happened to, you know, love, love, peace, war, revenge,
- 42:57Speaker 5: all those all those sort of universal themes.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Yes, yes, exactly.
- 43:03Speaker 5: So you know, Charmaine, you know again, I was talking
- 43:05Speaker 5: to Josh about just the release of this film. You know, what,
- 43:08Speaker 5: do you have any sort of future projects that you're
- 43:10Speaker 5: working on right now, anything, anything that maybe you're in
- 43:13Speaker 5: pre production for uh, maybe anything that you're writing yourself.
- 43:17Speaker 5: Just is there anything that you're working on.
- 43:19Speaker 4: Well, right now, you know, I'm working on being you know,
- 43:25Speaker 4: settling down here in France. My fiance and I are
- 43:29Speaker 4: you know, planning to marry soon, so you know, like
- 43:33Speaker 4: I have to do all the you know, all that
- 43:36Speaker 4: stuff preparing for our family. But in the business side,
- 43:41Speaker 4: you know, I'm not allowed to work here, so I'm
- 43:43Speaker 4: only doing a lot of conventions in in the States.
- 43:48Speaker 4: I have a convention that's coming up in June in Chicago,
- 43:52Speaker 4: and there's another one in New Jersey, uh and later
- 43:57Speaker 4: in November. But that's pretty much basically what my schedule
- 44:04Speaker 4: is this year is just focusing on my marriage, you know,
- 44:08Speaker 4: and settling down here in France. That's kind of my
- 44:12Speaker 4: first priority because I yeah, it's it's you know, moving
- 44:18Speaker 4: from a different country. It takes some time, you know,
- 44:20Speaker 4: and you know, if if there is another festival, which
- 44:24Speaker 4: actually there is I'm sorry for the Face of Evil,
- 44:28Speaker 4: there's a I think it's the New York Film International
- 44:31Speaker 4: Film Festival. It's in April, so the film will be
- 44:34Speaker 4: premiering there in April. But I'm not going to be attending.
- 44:39Speaker 5: Okay, and I'll make sure to link that in the
- 44:41Speaker 5: show notes about that premiere though.
- 44:43Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, yeah, it's in New York. But yeah, it's it.
- 44:47Speaker 4: This is you know, this is a very critical time
- 44:49Speaker 4: for me of just putting family first, you know, for
- 44:54Speaker 4: the first time, because I've you know, all throughout my career,
- 44:57Speaker 4: you know, it's always just been me, me, me, me,
- 44:59Speaker 4: and you know, my career. And my fiance is very
- 45:02Speaker 4: supportive any any festival or anything, you know, well, I'm
- 45:06Speaker 4: I'm you know, he supports it, even any film. But
- 45:09Speaker 4: I think for now, for this year, I think that's
- 45:12Speaker 4: kind of what my priorities are, you know. So after
- 45:17Speaker 4: I think settling down and getting you know, being married,
- 45:21Speaker 4: I will fight, you know, like try to pursue my
- 45:25Speaker 4: acting career maybe here in Europe and find an agency
- 45:29Speaker 4: you know, in the in London area because they speak
- 45:32Speaker 4: English and hopefully I can uh finally you know, be
- 45:37Speaker 4: fluent in French where I can start working here in France.
- 45:42Speaker 4: So I yeah, that's basically what my kind of goals
- 45:45Speaker 4: are right now. Yeah.
- 45:47Speaker 5: I was just gonna say, because you know, you know,
- 45:48Speaker 5: you're in France and you know, the United Kingdom is
- 45:50Speaker 5: isn't too far away. And uh, you know, obviously a
- 45:54Speaker 5: lot of English uh, you know language films do come
- 45:57Speaker 5: to New Europe Uh because usually Europeans. As I I've
- 46:00Speaker 5: been to Europe several times that I've noticed they usually
- 46:02Speaker 5: speak like their own language, you know, like Italian, but
- 46:05Speaker 5: they also speak English or they speak French, they also
- 46:07Speaker 5: speak English. Yes, you know, I know foreign language sort
- 46:10Speaker 5: of starts there very early. So so and I've also
- 46:13Speaker 5: have a ton of friends from Australia and New Zealand
- 46:16Speaker 5: who are actually moving to Britain, who are in the
- 46:18Speaker 5: film industry and they're in the like marketing promotion side,
- 46:21Speaker 5: because it's just it's much bigger than in Britain than
- 46:25Speaker 5: it is in Australia and New Zealand.
- 46:27Speaker 4: You know, it's funny. I've noticed there's a lot of
- 46:30Speaker 4: British actors that are moving into the Hollywood. I mean,
- 46:36Speaker 4: I mean even on Netflix or even just film, a
- 46:39Speaker 4: lot of actors like even you know, like Game of
- 46:41Speaker 4: Thrones and Star Wars, they're all like British actors. It's crazy.
- 46:47Speaker 4: So I know that there are some you know, even films.
- 46:49Speaker 4: They shoot a lot of films in the London area.
- 46:52Speaker 4: On the you know that side, so you know they're there,
- 46:56Speaker 4: you know, there could be some opportunity for me there
- 46:59Speaker 4: since it's much closer. So that's pretty you know, I'm
- 47:04Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm looking into that this side, you know,
- 47:07Speaker 4: on this side of the the world.
- 47:10Speaker 5: Yeah, it's there are a lot of British actors now
- 47:13Speaker 5: in Hollywood.
- 47:14Speaker 4: Isn't it funny? Have you noticed, if you really think
- 47:16Speaker 4: about it, they're all British. They just speak, they have
- 47:18Speaker 4: just an English accent.
- 47:20Speaker 5: Yeah. I think I think it just Alba really started
- 47:22Speaker 5: all that because he was on the Wire. Uh, and
- 47:25Speaker 5: now he's doing now he's he has the best of
- 47:27Speaker 5: both worlds because now he's here and in and in England.
- 47:30Speaker 4: I love. Yeah, he has a show on Netflix's Yes Luthor,
- 47:36Speaker 4: I love I Love Luthor. He's so good in that show.
- 47:39Speaker 4: It's really really, really good. Yeah. Isn't that crazy?
- 47:43Speaker 5: Yeah? Because the first time I ever saw him was
- 47:45Speaker 5: in the Wire and he has that Baltimore accent. And
- 47:47Speaker 5: then when I saw him, I forget what movie it
- 47:50Speaker 5: was with that British accent. It might have been Rock
- 47:52Speaker 5: and Roller, but he was he was I was like wow,
- 47:55Speaker 5: I was like, he's you know, he's able to sort
- 47:57Speaker 5: of do that, do both. And then then I was like, oh,
- 47:59Speaker 5: so he goes you know, he's actually British, he's actually
- 48:01Speaker 5: not American, Like, oh well, I didn't even know because
- 48:04Speaker 5: that he had that Baltimore accent down absolutely phenomenal. I mean,
- 48:08Speaker 5: I mean, I have no friends from Baltimore, and he
- 48:11Speaker 5: sounded like he could fit right in.
- 48:13Speaker 4: Yeah, isn't that interesting? Like it's crazy to hear a
- 48:16Speaker 4: British person just completely change into an American accent or
- 48:21Speaker 4: like even or Boston accent or you know, there's just
- 48:25Speaker 4: different accents. It's so weird because for me, I don't
- 48:28Speaker 4: know if I can do that, you know, because you know,
- 48:31Speaker 4: if I speak a little French, you know, to my
- 48:34Speaker 4: my my in laws, but I have an American accent,
- 48:40Speaker 4: you know, when I say something in French, it's it's
- 48:43Speaker 4: it's like you can tell I'm American, you know, but
- 48:47Speaker 4: like other people, you know, like when they're fluent, you
- 48:50Speaker 4: cannot tell, you know, but you can tell I'm American.
- 48:56Speaker 5: Yeah, But Jarmaine, We've been talking for about I think
- 49:00Speaker 5: thirty forty five minutes. I I've lost my time or
- 49:03Speaker 5: it's not on the screen right now. But I wanted
- 49:04Speaker 5: to ask, you know, is there anything maybe just in
- 49:06Speaker 5: closing that you wanted to discuss or maybe any sort
- 49:09Speaker 5: of final thoughts to put put a period at the
- 49:12Speaker 5: end of this whole conversation.
- 49:14Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I just want to say that, you know,
- 49:17Speaker 4: I still want to pursue, you know, doing film and
- 49:21Speaker 4: and you know, my career is still not over. You know,
- 49:24Speaker 4: like this is just you know, my my personal life.
- 49:28Speaker 4: It's like it's I'm grateful for everything, and I still
- 49:31Speaker 4: want to pursue every you know, my my dreams as
- 49:34Speaker 4: an actress. And you know, I'm I'm I've finally retired
- 49:39Speaker 4: into in the adult industry.
- 49:43Speaker 3: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor,
- 49:49Speaker 3: and now back to the show.
- 49:52Speaker 4: You know, this year I was honored uh an induction
- 49:55Speaker 4: of the Hall of Fame, which was you know, that's
- 49:58Speaker 4: nice of them to do, you know, like, oh, okay,
- 50:02Speaker 4: I'm in the Hall of Fame. So that was nice
- 50:04Speaker 4: and yeah, and thank you, you know, thank you for
- 50:08Speaker 4: you know this this nice interview. And I hope Catch
- 50:13Speaker 4: twenty two can be successful and you know, you know,
- 50:18Speaker 4: catch everybody's eye on this film. It's a really great film.
- 50:22Speaker 4: Every all the guys in the film, they're really great actors.
- 50:26Speaker 4: Even though I had a short film, it was just
- 50:28Speaker 4: a great opportunity to just be in you know, that
- 50:31Speaker 4: world of film.
- 50:33Speaker 5: So oh yeah, it's been a pleasure haveing you here,
- 50:36Speaker 5: and you know, and I'm definitely gonna you know, link
- 50:39Speaker 5: to everything that we talked about in the show notes
- 50:41Speaker 5: again for everyone listening. So Shermain, where can you find
- 50:45Speaker 5: you out online?
- 50:47Speaker 4: Well, you can find me on my social media. It's
- 50:50Speaker 4: very easy. It's just at Charmine Star on my Twitter
- 50:55Speaker 4: and my Instagram, and then I have a Facebook fan
- 50:58Speaker 4: page Charmaine Star. And if you also want to read
- 51:02Speaker 4: a lot of just hear say what says my blog
- 51:06Speaker 4: Charmainstar dot com.
- 51:08Speaker 5: And that's it, Charmain Star. I want to say thank
- 51:11Speaker 5: you so much for coming on the show.
- 51:13Speaker 4: Thank you Dave for having me.
- 51:16Speaker 2: I want to thank Dave so much for doing such
