- 0:00Speaker 1: Carl Warner finds solace in a room full of singing canaries,
- 0:04Speaker 1: but a stormy night call from Chester Brule, a former
- 0:07Speaker 1: employee of Crag Mount Asylum, brings damaging knowledge and a
- 0:11Speaker 1: demand for money. This is Inner Sanctum Mysteries, Birdsong for
- 0:16Speaker 1: a Murderer, CBS episode 512, originally broadcast June 22, 1952.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Boris Karloff stars as Warner with Everett Sloan in a
- 0:29Speaker 1: story credited to Louis Vitas. Paul McGrath is your host.
- 0:35Speaker 1: When Lieutenant Gregg finds a canary and its cage connected
- 0:38Speaker 1: to the inquiry, Warner's quiet home is drawn into suspicion
- 0:43Speaker 1: and an ominous secret from the asylum. Here is the
- 0:47Speaker 1: original broadcast.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Good evening, friends of the creaking door.
- 1:04Speaker 3: This is your host to welcome you into the inner
- 1:06Speaker 3: sanctum once again.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Come in.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Our little place may not be a mansion, but it
- 1:12Speaker 3: has its advantages. For one thing, it's thoroughly scare-conditioned. The
- 1:17Speaker 3: scream pipes are always in good working order... And the
- 1:21Speaker 3: rent's quite reasonable. We get a cut rate. Well, you've
- 1:39Speaker 3: had your warning. Whatever happens from now on, you asked for.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Just be sure the family is provided for.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 1:50Speaker 3: And now to our happy little anecdote for tonight. Bird
- 1:55Speaker 3: song for a murderer.
- 2:01Speaker 4: My name is Carl Warner. I'm not a young man
- 2:06Speaker 4: any longer, but I don't mind that. I wasn't very
- 2:09Speaker 4: happy when I was young. Now, well, at least I'm
- 2:15Speaker 4: not unhappy. And late at night, after Elaine has gone
- 2:19Speaker 4: upstairs to bed, she's my wife.
- 2:23Speaker 2: She's very pretty and younger than I am. Perhaps I
- 2:26Speaker 2: made a mistake in marrying her, but... Well, anyway.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Late at night, I go into the room where I
- 2:34Speaker 4: keep the birds. And then, listening to them sing, I
- 2:40Speaker 4: get as close to happiness as I can expect. I
- 2:45Speaker 4: stay an hour. And then I cover their cages. And
- 2:51Speaker 4: then they know it's time to sleep.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And they sleep.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Even on the stormiest of nights. This was a stormy night.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Someone knocked at the front door. It was late. We
- 3:11Speaker 2: know very few people. We kept to ourselves, mostly Elaine
- 3:14Speaker 2: and I, so.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I was worried a little when I opened the door. Yes?
- 3:23Speaker 6: Mind if I come in, Mr. Warner? It's kind of
- 3:26Speaker 6: damp out.
- 3:27Speaker 2: No, of course not. You... You seem to know me.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I do, don't I? But I don't know you.
- 3:36Speaker 6: My name is Brule. Chester Brule. Chester Brule. I still
- 3:42Speaker 6: don't know... Remember?
- 3:45Speaker 2: It doesn't matter. What? What did you want?
- 3:51Speaker 6: Nice place you got here. Much nicer than the Crag Mount.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Crag Mount?
- 3:57Speaker 6: Crag Mount Asylum for the insane.
- 4:01Speaker 2: You... you worked there? I used to work there. This
- 4:07Speaker 2: is all very interesting.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Funny thing happened just before I left. One of the
- 4:12Speaker 6: inmates escaped. This baby was a homicidal maniac.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Homicidal. Yeah, that's right. I don't see what all this
- 4:22Speaker 2: has to do with me.
- 4:23Speaker 6: I didn't say it had. There was one funny thing
- 4:28Speaker 6: about this inmate.
- 4:29Speaker 2: What's that?
- 4:30Speaker 6: Loved canaries. Loved to listen to them sing. Psychiatrists at
- 4:36Speaker 6: Cragmount found it very interesting. Birdsong was the only thing
- 4:41Speaker 6: that kept the murderous impulses down. I, I... Mr. Warner,
- 4:46Speaker 6: I'm out of words. It's too bad. You're not doing badly.
- 4:51Speaker 6: Nice house, furnishings. Didn't I hear canaries singing before I
- 4:57Speaker 6: come into the house?
- 4:58Speaker 2: Maybe. Maybe you did.
- 5:00Speaker 6: So, uh, 5,000 in the morning? No.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I think yes.
- 5:09Speaker 6: Otherwise, Cragmount will be happy to hear from me. 11
- 5:15Speaker 6: Crescent Place. Room 2B, in the morning. You can show
- 5:21Speaker 6: me to the door now.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Of course. Good night, Mr. Warner.
- 5:28Speaker 6: Till we meet again.
- 5:33Speaker 4: I watched him go out into the blackness and the
- 5:36Speaker 4: blackness swallow him.
- 5:40Speaker 2: The birds were quiet.
- 5:43Speaker 4: I thought for a moment of taking the covers off
- 5:45Speaker 4: the cages and letting the birds sing and then... Then
- 5:49Speaker 4: I thought that tonight it might be better if I
- 5:53Speaker 4: didn't let the birds sing.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Okay, okay. Who is....
- 6:12Speaker 6: Oh, couldn't wait till morning, huh? I didn't expect it. Wait.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Wait, that knife. No.
- 6:20Speaker 6: No. I shouldn't have let it.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Surprise. Surprise. Surprise. It had been a bad night.
- 6:43Speaker 4: I couldn't have slept more than two or three hours. Fortunately,
- 6:47Speaker 4: Elaine and I had separate rooms. And at breakfast the
- 6:51Speaker 4: next morning, she was.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Fresh and young and beautiful.
- 6:59Speaker 5: Carl.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Huh?
- 7:00Speaker 5: Why are you staring at me in that funny way?
- 7:02Speaker 2: Nothing. You really shouldn't read at meals.
- 7:06Speaker 5: It's only the paper. So many exciting things happen. I
- 7:09Speaker 5: can't wait till I get to them.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Still.
- 7:11Speaker 5: Oh, isn't that terrible?
- 7:13Speaker 2: What is?
- 7:14Speaker 5: A man was murdered last night. Not very far from here.
- 7:17Speaker 7: Crescent Place.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Crescent Place.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Such an odd name.
- 7:22Speaker 7: Chester Brule.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Carl, your coffee, Carl. Sorry, I... I wish you wouldn't
- 7:27Speaker 2: read the paper.
- 7:28Speaker 7: It says that his canary.
- 7:30Speaker 8: He had a canary, Carl.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Was singing when the landlady found the body. Oh, that's pathetic.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Elaine, I told you not to read that paper.
- 7:37Speaker 6: Give it to me.
- 7:39Speaker 5: Ricardo, you're tearing the paper up.
- 7:40Speaker 7: What's the matter?
- 7:42Speaker 2: I'm nervous this morning.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Don't remember you ever having been like this before.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I told you I was nervous.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Now look, darling.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Why don't you go into the aviary? Listen to the
- 7:52Speaker 5: birds for a while. You love them so, and they
- 7:56Speaker 5: have such a nice effect on you.
- 8:02Speaker 4: I went into the aviary, as she suggested, and I
- 8:06Speaker 4: listened to the birds. Quite a little while before I
- 8:11Speaker 4: stopped trembling.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Carl? Yes, dear?
- 8:16Speaker 5: Come into the kitchen.
- 8:18Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:18Speaker 8: I've been washing the breakfast dishes, darling, and found this
- 8:23Speaker 8: among them.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Carving knife.
- 8:24Speaker 8: This isn't that funny. Besides, look at it. The blade's
- 8:28Speaker 8: all covered with brown steel.
- 8:30Speaker 6: I see.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Sure, I washed it after dinner last night. Did you
- 8:35Speaker 5: use it for anything?
- 8:37Speaker 2: No, darling. Give it to me and I'll wash it now.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Oh, I can do it. I just wondered what.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Oh, the door. Will you... No, you give me the knife.
- 8:48Speaker 2: And you answer the door. I said you answer the door.
- 8:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:53Speaker 5: There's nothing to shout about.
- 8:54Speaker 8: I don't know what's the matter with you this morning.
- 8:59Speaker 4: I washed the knife. Quickly, but carefully. Very quickly, but
- 9:04Speaker 4: very carefully. It didn't take long.
- 9:07Speaker 6: The.
- 9:08Speaker 2: The stains hadn't hardened much. The brown stains.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Carl?
- 9:16Speaker 6: Yes?
- 9:17Speaker 5: Someone to see you.
- 9:18Speaker 7: A man.
- 9:18Speaker 2: What does he want?
- 9:19Speaker 7: He didn't say, except that it was important.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I'll go see him.
- 9:23Speaker 7: He said he's a lieutenant. A Lieutenant Greg. From the police.
- 9:29Speaker 4: There are 17 steps between the kitchen and our living room.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I know because I counted them.
- 9:36Speaker 4: While I was walking to see Lieutenant Greg of the police.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Seventeen steps to make my face polite, relaxed, smiling. But
- 9:51Speaker 4: would I be able to hide the trembling of my hands?
- 9:55Speaker 4: You're Lieutenant Gregg. My wife said you wanted to see me.
- 9:59Speaker 6: Yes, that's right. Mr. Warner, did you know a man
- 10:02Speaker 6: named Chester Brule?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Chester Brule? Why, I can't say offhand.
- 10:08Speaker 4: I've got such a bad memory for names.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I may or I may not.
- 10:12Speaker 6: Why? He was murdered last night. You see, we found
- 10:17Speaker 6: your name and address in Brule's address book.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I see.
- 10:21Speaker 6: We thought you might be able to help us.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Well, the fact that my name is in its address
- 10:25Speaker 4: book doesn't mean that.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Prove anything? Well, of course not.
- 10:29Speaker 6: Would the fact that Brule used to be an attendant
- 10:32Speaker 6: in an insane asylum mean anything to you?
- 10:34Speaker 2: Why should it mean anything to me? Well, I didn't
- 10:36Speaker 2: say it should, Mr.
- 10:37Speaker 6: Warner. I just thought.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Well, it doesn't. Well, I guess that's that. You know,
- 10:43Speaker 2: funny thing.
- 10:44Speaker 6: There was a birdcage in Brule's room with a canary
- 10:46Speaker 6: in it. Singing its head off.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Huh? Well, lots of people are fond of canaries. Sure, sure.
- 10:53Speaker 6: What was funny about it is that Brule's landlady swears
- 10:56Speaker 6: Brule never had a bird. That.
- 11:00Speaker 2: That is funny.
- 11:01Speaker 6: The way it looks, the killer knifed Brule and then
- 11:04Speaker 6: left the cage and the bird in it behind him.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Doesn't make any sense. Unless you figure that the guy
- 11:10Speaker 6: who killed Brule was insane.
- 11:15Speaker 2: The birds have been quiet.
- 11:17Speaker 4: but the slam of the door maybe started them off.
- 11:22Speaker 4: And I knew that somehow I would have to get
- 11:26Speaker 4: the cage and the bird in it out.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Of Boo's room. I didn't know how I'd do it,
- 11:34Speaker 2: but I'd do it.
- 11:36Speaker 4: No matter how insane it was. It was dark when
- 11:50Speaker 4: I got to Crescent Place. Dark on a lonely street.
- 11:56Speaker 4: There was no one in front of the house. Nothing
- 11:58Speaker 4: to show that a man had died inside the night before.
- 12:03Speaker 2: With a knife in his throat. The door was open.
- 12:09Speaker 4: There was a dim light in the vestibule.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Leaving the stairs beyond in darkness. I went up them.
- 12:21Speaker 4: To the second floor. There's no one in the corridor.
- 12:28Speaker 4: The door of 2B opened and I went in.
- 12:37Speaker 2: There was no light.
- 12:40Speaker 4: The moon cast a pale glimmer over the room and.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Someone In a chair near the window. For a moment
- 12:53Speaker 2: I thought it was brood, but... But there was no blood.
- 13:01Speaker 4: And then I realized it was a policeman in uniform.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Asleep.
- 13:07Speaker 4: The cage was near the sleeping man. Would his sleep
- 13:12Speaker 4: be sound enough?
- 13:16Speaker 2: I reached out.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Lifted the cage, waked the door, and closed it. I.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I was safe.
- 13:32Speaker 8: Clark?
- 13:36Speaker 2: Yes?
- 13:36Speaker 7: Oh, I'm so glad you're home.
- 13:39Speaker 5: That Lieutenant Greg is here again.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Greg?
- 13:41Speaker 2: Where?
- 13:41Speaker 5: In the bird room.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Why did you take him to the bird room?
- 13:44Speaker 5: He asked me to.
- 13:45Speaker 2: All right. All right. Oh, Lieutenant Gregg. Oh, hello, Mr.
- 13:53Speaker 6: Warner. Quite a collection of canaries you've got here.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Yes, I have.
- 13:58Speaker 6: Were you home all last night?
- 13:59Speaker 2: Of course. This is still about Chester Brule's murder? Mm-hmm.
- 14:05Speaker 6: Say, remember my mentioning I thought that the man who'd
- 14:08Speaker 6: killed Brule and left the birdcage behind him must be insane?
- 14:11Speaker 2: Well, you did say something of the sort.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah. And then there's the fact that Brule used
- 14:17Speaker 6: to work with insane people.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Begins to mesh, huh? Oh, I know very little about
- 14:22Speaker 2: police work. I hope I'm not boring you.
- 14:25Speaker 6: Anyway, it occurs to me maybe I'd better take a
- 14:27Speaker 6: trip up to Cragmount.
- 14:28Speaker 4: I suppose going to asylum or any place else is
- 14:32Speaker 4: just part of your job.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Oh, sure.
- 14:34Speaker 6: Uh, did I mention Cragmount was in asylum?
- 14:40Speaker 2: Why, uh, you, uh, you must have.
- 14:44Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, well, I'll run up there and I wouldn't
- 14:46Speaker 6: be surprised if I get all the answers.
- 14:49Speaker 2: What do you think? I think I'm going to.
- 14:53Speaker 6: Carl?
- 14:56Speaker 2: What is it, Elaine?
- 14:58Speaker 5: Well, it's so late, I thought.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Oh, I can take a hint, Mrs.
- 15:01Speaker 6: Warner. Don't bother showing me to the door.
- 15:05Speaker 5: He seems like a very nice man. Carl, stop it.
- 15:09Speaker 6: What?
- 15:10Speaker 7: That's dear.
- 15:13Speaker 5: If I didn't know you so well, I'd say you
- 15:15Speaker 5: were going mad.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Carl? Go to bed, Elaine.
- 15:26Speaker 7: All right, darling. Oh, Carl, look.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Look at what?
- 15:32Speaker 7: The window, the garden. Lieutenant Gregg didn't go away.
- 15:35Speaker 2: He's down there. Get away from that window. Go to bed.
- 15:37Speaker 2: I'm not going.
- 15:40Speaker 5: But he looks as if he's waiting down there for something.
- 15:43Speaker 5: For what, Carl?
- 15:47Speaker 4: I knew what he was waiting for. I knew I
- 15:52Speaker 4: mustn't go to sleep. Things happen when you sleep.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Terrible things. But I haven't slept well the night before.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Not well at all. And there'd be the strain of
- 16:10Speaker 2: the day. And it was night now and dark.
- 16:35Speaker 7: Gargan?
- 16:38Speaker 2: Gargan? I was right.
- 16:51Speaker 6: I was right, only it wasn't Gargan.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Oh.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Such a lovely morning, Carl.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Lovely.
- 17:07Speaker 5: I looked for Lieutenant Greg as soon as I got up.
- 17:09Speaker 5: He wasn't in the garden anymore.
- 17:11Speaker 2: He must have got tired. Gone home. Or back to headquarters.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Wherever policemen go.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Oh, dear.
- 17:19Speaker 7: That's the Swenson's dog. He's got into our garden again.
- 17:23Speaker 7: I'll have to get him out.
- 17:24Speaker 6: Elaine, don't.
- 17:25Speaker 7: Don't you dig up all the flowers looking for bones.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Elaine. Maybe. Maybe he won't be there. Elaine. Where are you?
- 17:39Speaker 2: Under the tree.
- 17:41Speaker 4: What?
- 17:42Speaker 2: What?
- 17:43Speaker 6: Look.
- 17:44Speaker 7: Lieutenant Greg.
- 17:45Speaker 5: He is thrown.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Come inside.
- 17:49Speaker 5: All right.
- 17:54Speaker 2: The kitchen.
- 17:56Speaker 7: Carl, where are you going?
- 17:58Speaker 2: The kitchen.
- 18:02Speaker 7: What are you doing?
- 18:02Speaker 2: The drawer. Silverware.
- 18:07Speaker 6: Yes.
- 18:09Speaker 2: It's here.
- 18:10Speaker 5: The carving knife.
- 18:11Speaker 2: That's right.
- 18:12Speaker 5: Carl, I thought you washed it last night. I guess
- 18:16Speaker 5: you didn't.
- 18:17Speaker 2: You'd be wrong. I did wash it last night.
- 18:19Speaker 7: But the stains are still there. The brown stains.
- 18:22Speaker 6: These stains.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Fresh ones, Elaine. Get out of my way. But... I've
- 18:28Speaker 2: got to go to the bird room.
- 18:30Speaker 7: Carl, please don't go away from me.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Carl! I was holding the carving knife in my hand.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Started to put it down and then... I held on
- 18:42Speaker 2: to it anyway. It would make taking the covers off
- 18:47Speaker 2: the cages awkward, but... I held on to it anyway.
- 18:52Speaker 2: The birds were still.
- 18:55Speaker 4: They remained still unless I took the covers off.
- 19:01Speaker 6: Elaine!
- 19:02Speaker 7: Carl, you must tell me what's wrong.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Don't come any closer. Elaine, please, not any closer.
- 19:09Speaker 5: You've got that knife in your hand.
- 19:12Speaker 6: Yes.
- 19:13Speaker 7: The one with the brown stings.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Oh, Carl.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Shh, don't say anything.
- 19:18Speaker 6: How?
- 19:18Speaker 7: The night before last?
- 19:19Speaker 2: Elaine, don't ask questions. That's dangerous.
- 19:22Speaker 7: You were out of the house last night when Lieutenant
- 19:24Speaker 7: Greg was killed.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I was asleep.
- 19:25Speaker 7: You have the knife, Carl?
- 19:27Speaker 2: Yes.
- 19:27Speaker 7: Give it to me.
- 19:28Speaker 2: No.
- 19:29Speaker 7: Please, Carl.
- 19:29Speaker 6: No.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Stay where you are.
- 19:32Speaker 5: All right. You may keep the knife. Because, look, Carl.
- 19:38Speaker 2: A revolver.
- 19:39Speaker 6: Yes.
- 19:41Speaker 7: Lieutenant Greg's revolver.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Elaine, give that to me. Oh, no.
- 19:49Speaker 7: I took it from Lieutenant. Gregg last night. After he
- 19:52Speaker 7: stopped crying.
- 19:53Speaker 5: They always cry when you.
- 19:56Speaker 6: Elaine.
- 19:57Speaker 8: Didn't like it the way you've been looking at me, Carl.
- 20:01Speaker 8: You were thinking that maybe you'd have to send.
- 20:03Speaker 7: Me back to Craigmount.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I wasn't.
- 20:05Speaker 7: You were, Carl.
- 20:07Speaker 5: I know you were.
- 20:09Speaker 7: After Chester Brew died.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Elaine.
- 20:11Speaker 7: Stop where you are.
- 20:12Speaker 2: All right, but.
- 20:13Speaker 7: Keep your hands away from the birdcage.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Don't pull off the covers.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Oh, Carl.
- 20:22Speaker 5: I've hurt you.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Never mind.
- 20:25Speaker 5: But I didn't want to. Are you going to cry
- 20:30Speaker 5: like the others?
- 20:30Speaker 2: It was my fault. I loved you too well. I.
- 20:39Speaker 2: I really killed those others. Not you, my darling.
- 20:45Speaker 5: That's a very silly thing to say.
- 20:47Speaker 7: And I've become quite angry. I am quite angry. Carl,
- 20:59Speaker 7: you silly.
- 21:00Speaker 5: You pulled the covers off the cage.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Carl.
- 21:05Speaker 5: Carl, I'm speaking to you.
- 21:07Speaker 7: Those birds, I don't like them.
- 21:11Speaker 6: Carl?
- 21:14Speaker 5: Oh, poor Carl.
- 21:18Speaker 2: He's dead.
