- 0:00SPEAKER_02: You know what also will uh lead you to crap your pants, Marcus?
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: Fried Chicken Week.
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah in the Portland metropolitan area.
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: It's pretty cool.
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: So it's not just chicken wings, it's not just fried chicken pieces, like a KFC bucket style.
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: It's not just chicken sandwiches, it's everything fried chicken week.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: So depending on the different place, you get different options.
- 0:21SPEAKER_02: $10 per portion for you to try out some of these epic spots.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: And the reason I love it is the same reason I love Burger Week.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: And now I had a I had a cardiac event which kept me from partaking in Burger Week.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: And I'm sure that same cardiologist would frown upon me doing fried chicken week.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: But I don't know if you know this.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: My favorite menu item is a well-made fried chicken sandwich.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: You know, that doesn't surprise me.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: I remember you being a big fried chicken guy.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And uh two things.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: One, yes, you are on the IR for infarction right now, and we need to keep you there until we make sure that you're all the way back.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Uh, but two, fried chicken week is a pants crapping I look forward to, Drew.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, that is one that I will pay money for.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Welcome into the PNW podcast, Hangin' Tough uh with Drew and Marcus.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Per usual, I am at the Stafford Hills Club where we record all of these bad boys.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: Well, Marcus comes to us via satellite from Eugene, but I'm here in the studio just down the way from the beautiful saltwater pool and all the workout amenities they've got for you here at the Stafford Hills Club.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: You got to check it out for yourself, Staffordhills.com.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: I just did the Hyrocks training yesterday, Marcus.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: And uh it's kind of like what CrossFit used to be.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Hyrocks is the future.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you saw it made national news, the lady who was won the HyROX competition, but she pooped her pants and they let her continue to go.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: I will say the workout I did yesterday, I could see how that could be possible.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, I mean, at one point I'm like, oh my God, what is going on here?
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: Now, great workout.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: The first workout is free here, whether you're a member or not.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: And if you're looking for something that's a little bit different and has that kind of team feel without you getting screamed at, Hyrocks is the thing.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: You can check out all the details at staffordhills.com.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: And of course, if you want to join the club, tell them Drew sent you for half off your initiation.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: But yeah, uh, they did say, Marcus, that the rules will change where um you will now not be allowed to continue if you have a noticeable um fallout from the back of your drawers.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you, I'd never wondered uh out loud what a diet of only protein shakes and bananas will do to your insides.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: But I was uh educated when I saw that, Drew.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: I that was it's so hard to describe it without being gross, so I won't.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: But oh my god, if you haven't looked it up and you haven't seen the pictures, go find it because it's like you see stories about marathon runners soiling themselves on a 29.2 mile run or 26, whatever it is.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I had no idea the fallout drew.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, this was I thought she was wearing stretch pants.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be honest with you, that went all the way down.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: I now I'm wondering if some of them will just start wearing like a protective, kind of like a sports diaper type of a deal to just protect them from said things.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: She didn't wake up in the morning and want to poop her pants.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: There's no way, but it's it's a lot like, and you brought up marathon runners, ultra runners, Iron Man.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: Your body's going through so much, and those who are the most elite who can turn your brain off to all of the red flags that are flying up, that you're about to poop your pants, you're about to poop your pants, and they just keep going.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Well, that's very David Goggins of them.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: It's also you pooped your pants in front of everybody, and it's it's just the hygiene is is wrong.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: So I see how they would ban it, but I think it'll become the underbelly of the sport, kind of like nobody goes backstage at the Nathan's hot dog eating contest to see if Joey Chestnut blows hot dogs out of his nose three minutes after the contest.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Whereas in I promise you, if I ate 80 dogs or 70 dogs, they're coming north, not south.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, 100%.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And the the exertion, I look, I have to hand it to her.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Like I've never worked out hard enough to crap my pants.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: And I think that there should be a little tip of a cap to the people that have.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: I I don't have that in me.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Um, but also I can see why there would be some rule changes because good God, what she was doing, what she was walking around on that course with uh was just something of legend.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, if it does become the underbelly, there's going to be uh I can't wait to see the sport in a hundred years, Drew.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Like when we look back in a hundred years, what will be the stories that they will tell about that event?
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: I will say Hyrocks is a great workout.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: My legs are just torched right this second.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: I there's stairs up to my studio that I jog up every day.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: I took the elevator today.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, and it's one, it's a one-story ride.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: It's for people who can't take the stairs.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: And today I cannot.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: Um, so I will say uh Wendy, who puts on the class, does an incredible job.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: It's a very positive environment.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Nobody soiled themselves, um, to my knowledge, and it's really something that's worth checking out.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: So the whole sport kind of got put under a microscope because of this situation.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: But it looks like the rights to high rocks just sold for$800 million.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: And so it's big business, and it's gonna be a billion dollar thing in no time, but it's definitely the future.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: I almost feel like CrossFit's gonna go extinct because of it.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Um, but you can't get it twisted.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: It's like, oh, all I gotta do is that row machine, and then there's this little ski pull machine, and then I just throw that ball up on that wall, and that that's it for the next 10 minutes, and at the end of like seven minutes, right?
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: It's been seven minutes.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna crap my pants.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: So uh much cleaner environment here.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, I see how um that's not great PR for it overall, but um, the full meal deal is coming to Portland at some point, and I'm excited um to see it.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: You know what also will uh lead you to crap your pants, Marcus?
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: Fried Chicken Week.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Portland metropolitan area.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: It's pretty cool.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: So it's not just chicken wings, it's not just fried chicken pieces, like a KFC bucket style, it's not just chicken sandwiches, it's everything fried chicken week.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: So depending on the different place, you get different options,$10 per portion for you to try out some of these epic spots.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: And the reason I love it is the same reason I love Burger Week.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: And now I had a I had a cardiac event which kept me from uh partaking in Burger Week.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: And I'm sure that same cardiologist would frown upon uh me doing fried chicken week.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: But I don't know if you know this, my favorite menu item is a well-made fried chicken sandwich.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: You know, that doesn't surprise me.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: I remember you being a big fried chicken guy, and uh two things.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: One, yes, you are on the IR for infarction right now, and we need to keep you there until we make sure that you're all the way back.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Uh but two, fried chicken week is a pants crapping I look forward to, Drew.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, that is that is one that I will pay money for.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Um, I think this is awesome.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: And again, I, you know, Eugene is is always kind of little brother here to Portland, but hey, uh if you're if you're in Eugene and you have these kind of strings to pull, let's get a fried chicken week going, my friend, because there's some good chicken down here, just like there's good chicken in Portland, and I like to see when creative chefs push the boundaries a little bit and just try new things.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, I told you about the grilled cheese week when I had like an apple gouda honey grilled cheese.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: It changed my life, Drew.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: It was like a the best charcuterie board I'd ever had in a sandwich.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Um I mean, yeah, I know that there's gonna be some wild takes on things like chicken and waffles during uh, you know, uh fried chicken week.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: And chicken and waffles is one of those things I don't have that often, but it's like when I have it, it's an event, you know, and man, I might have to get up to Portland for Fried Chicken Week.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: When does it start?
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: It started now.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: It's already underway.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Um now here's here's what's wild is Portland's pretty good, not just about being a foodie town, but about having these weeks.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: I know they have taco week, they have curry week, they have burger week, and of course fried chicken week.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: For you, Marcus, if you're sitting down to the perfect fried chicken sandwich, are you wanting it to be a chicken breast or thigh?
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: I'm probably going thigh just because I like thigh meat better than I like breast meat, especially fried.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Sometimes breast meat tends to dry out a little bit.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Um the one tough part about a chicken thigh on a sandwich is it's kind of it can be kind of weird shaped unless they've trimmed them really well.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Those little nublets can get in the way.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: But I think you gotta go thigh.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: It gets juicier.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: You almost can't dry a chicken thigh out.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: You really have to cook the ever-living hell out of it to do that.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Um, so give me the thigh and make sure, Drew, that I got big, crispy pickles on that thing.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: I gotta have them.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: I don't care what kind of sauce, if you're gonna aioli me or honey mustard me or ranch me, it doesn't matter.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Pickles.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: So I'm with you on a lot of it.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: I agree I'm a thigh over breast guy when it comes to that.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Um, now I know that the breast is a little healthier, but we're having fried chicken right now.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: We're not gonna.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: And the the only downside is the breast is sandwich is always bigger.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Um, the thigh sandwich does tend to be sometimes like that's all my chicken.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: Like, you eat the first half and it's delicious, and you get to the back end and that there's no chicken in the bread.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: That's a problem.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Um, but I still will go thigh over breast.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: What I my big caveat, and I talked about this a little bit on here when I was previewing it when you were out for your birthday.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: I want my seasoning in the breading of the chicken.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: There's nothing that frustrates me more than when I order a fried chicken sandwich and they're like, Do you want it, you want it spicy?
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: And you're like, Yeah, yeah, yeah, put a little spice on it.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: And then they just dip it in Frank's.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Like that that is such a punt.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: And it better, that better not be on a single menu on Fried Chicken Week.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: We're talking about elite chicken, you're not Frank's.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: I can do Frank's.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: I I think that the only time you can give me a dipped uh piece of chicken that I'm gonna be satisfied with is if you've done Nashville hot chicken correctly.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: That one kind of has to be dipped.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: But uh to your point, Drew, Nashville hot chicken has a ton of seasoning in the breading itself and or the batter, whatever you want to call it.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: So it's really just an extension.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: It's just that you're dipping it to make it that much hotter.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: But you're right, man.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, Colonel Sanders taught us how to make fried chicken all the way back in like the 20s.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: And guess what?
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: 13 herbs and spices, and all of them are in your batter.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: They're not in, they don't just, you know, sprinkle them on the chicken after it's already been fried.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: That's a lost cause.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Because you almost need an over-fried chicken sandwich to be able to handle sauce on that level.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Now, Amy makes epic fried chicken sandwiches at our house, and a lot of what she does is like the slaw or whatever, or whatever, you know, vegetable you've got on there is between the breast or the thigh and the bun.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: So that way when you sauce over the top of the slaw, then you don't compromise the breading.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: Because if you toss a crispy piece of chicken in liquid, you're going to get softness.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: And there's nothing I want about a soft, crispy chicken sandwich.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: We didn't ask for saucy chicken sandwich, a crispy chicken sandwich.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: If I if I don't want the crunch, I'll go grilled.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: And guess what?
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: I've never gone grilled.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: I want the crunch.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: That's all I need you to know.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: You know, I I want to say one other thing about the little, you know, those little bitlets that are on a chicken thigh.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: You know, we cook them all the time at my house.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: And, you know, I I normally will start it slick side down on the barbecue so you don't have those things falling through the grill.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: And then when they've hardened up a little bit, then you can flip them back and forth.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: But we took a bunch of premarinated chicken thighs camping with a good buddy of mine, Neil is his name, he knows who he is.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: And Neil and his family were there and we put a pan out over the fire, and I I cooked them all right there, like caveman style.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: And he said to me, He's like, Yeah, my kids are weirded out by the little nubs.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: So we always cut them off.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, You cut off the the little chunks?
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: Like, first of all, they're delicious when completed.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess they're like 40% fat.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Like they're sh they're so good.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, they are you're there's no going wrong with a nub.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: So they actually cut off those nubs, and like to me, that's a third of the chicken.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: You know, like you lose that, and all of a sudden, it it's uh it's a loss along the lines of when you buy mushrooms and then you make stuffed mushrooms and have to throw 80% of the mushroom down the sink.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: And I'll tell you what I do with the nubs, because uh, we I just end up pan frying or pan searing a lot of chicken thighs.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: It's kind of the healthy go-to for Ashley and I is just And it's delicious.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: You get kind of that sear on them.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: You got to uh get get yourself some of the killer hogs uh killer barbecue rub.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: You don't need anything else, no salt, no pepper.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: You hit them with the barbecue rub, it tastes like they came off the grill.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Uh, but sometimes you get the little, you know, maybe quarter-size nub that falls off the backside.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Those are corgi nuggets, man.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Those the corgies love those little chicken, those little chicken nubs.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: So um, you can't go wrong with a nub.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Tell your buddy Neil if he ever needs a nub stop to drop off all the nubs, he can bring them by your house or my house and we'll take care of them.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: You know, I'm gonna wake up one day and he'll take that seriously, and there'll be a bag of raw chicken nubs at my porch, and I'm not gonna feel as excited about it as I am in the idea right now.
- 14:24unknown: Right.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: But all you do is mix up a big thing of your breading and just dump it into the bag and shake that thing up and throw them all in the fryer.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: We're eating chicken nuggets by five.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Um, so if you want to hit up fried chicken week, um, it is showcased all the way through the week.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Uh you can look them up online.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: I'm looking at some of the stuff right now.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: It looks truly delicious.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: Everything from crispy chicken tacos, uh crispy chicken salads, uh, your standard sandwiches.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: Of course, I am a wing guy.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Now, I don't know if it will constitute unless there's like heavy breading on it.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: I like a I like a fried wing, but just in its own skin.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: Marcus, do you remember my obsession with wings and what I require to have happen before I'll eat one?
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: Yes, I do.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: But please tell tell the audience because they're dying to do that.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: I want to see if you remember correctly what because I I'm neurotic about it, and it's it's an came from the O-Bar days.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's funny because I just had I had our buddy Tack who used to sing karaoke with us all those years, maybe almost 20 years ago, and he remembered all right, I'll just tell you.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, why am I why am I not?
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: I said yes, I remember, and now I don't remember.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: So when I would get the wing and they would toss theirs in a Frank style sauce, which, you know, early in my wing career, that'll be fine, as long as it was Frank wings.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: And what I do is I take the wings and they're in a pile, like a saucy pile, separate all wings, and then spend probably 20 minutes, don't let them touch each other, and then let them all dry so that the wing, when you go to take it, it's not wet.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Like, and and the skin actually works as an almost like a it'll dry it out without having the skin fall off.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: So each wing kind of has that pre-prepared, almost left in the convenience store window texture that I I obsess over.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: To this day, I dry those wings before consumption.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Well, I will tell you, and and maybe this wouldn't make it onto fried chicken week, but whenever I make my wings for the tailgate, um, and I did what I did 30 pounds of wings one year for one tailgate.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Uh smoke a fry is the way to go, dude.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: I put those things on the Traeger until they're almost done, throw them in the truck, take them out to the tailgate, and then quick fry them right there at the tailgate.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: They get so crispy, they're not just fully on bread and everything like that.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: It's like you're talking about a wing in its own skin that has that crisp to it.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Ah, and then the the key that I found with them, because obviously mine sit in a pile in a bowl and you just kind of take them as you will, it's a light saucing.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: You can't go nuts with the sauce.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: You don't want sauce just sitting in the bottom of the bowl.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's hard to do, man.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Wings are a fine art, and there's a reason they are, is because we got connoisseurs like you in the room that's going to, you know, separate them out, let them dry, and really enjoy every single bite.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: So you better do good on Drew's wings.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: So I do a lot of that too, where I'll smoke them and then I'll air fry them.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: And so just to do that same thing, it kind of sucks that moisture out at the end, and then you can do a quick toss.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: And my other hint is ex and you kind of alluded to this, when you put them in the bowl to toss them, put an obnoxiously small amount of sauce in there to where you're like, oh, I under sauced them.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: If you do that, there'll be the perfect amount of sauce.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: It's like getting a haircut, Drew.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: You can you you well, it's the opposite of getting a haircut.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: You can always add more, but you cannot untake it away.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: You can't take it away.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: It's the same thing.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's I get that it's an opposite, but it's the same deal.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: Don't go all in.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: Let's just ease our way in.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Put your foot in the pool before you just cannonball the thing because there's no way back from all of that.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: God, I wish I had fried chicken week in Eugene, son of a bitch.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: I know.

- 20:51SPEAKER_02: Check out all the details on what's going down at Staffordhills.com.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: All right, now that we've had all this fried chicken talk, I'm starving.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: Um, but what we'll go from chicken to ducks.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: And before we get into uh some of the information that's come out about how the ducks got themselves into so much trouble over the weekend against Oklahoma State, where they slid down the rankings, um, like what was it, 15 to 20 spots?
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: So there we are on that.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: But before we talk, Ducks, the man behind the ducks, Phil Knight, him and Penny Knight have come through again.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: I I love this man, and I always have.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: I have the luxury to have met him.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: He was at my brother's wedding.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: I got to go into his suite one time only.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: He did not speak to me while I was in there.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: I I did get to shake his hand at the wedding, and he gave me a compliment about my wedding speech, which was one of the great moments of my life.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: I wish I had had that on recording.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: Um, but I always have loved Phil and Penny Knight, great people and great philanthropists.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: And here we go again.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: I was just up at St.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: Vincent's Hospital a couple of days ago.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Doing the stress test on my heart, Marcus, which I passed.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: They put you on a treadmill at a 45 degree angle and make you run straight uphill until your heart nearly explodes, but mine did not.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: And so I passed that the first in a series of tests to get me back into uh working order.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: But when I went up there, I was driving by and there's all these different wings of the hospital.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: And Phil and Penny Knight, like there's a whole chunk named after them up at St.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Vincent's.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: And it's time to do another chunk because they just gave one point one billion dollars to Providence, St.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Vincent to back their women's hospital, which is so cool to me.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: Um, it's it's a place that I have mixed memories about.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: You know, I remember watching uh my grandma fade away in that place.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: I remember sitting out in my car crying about all of that, and and it just makes me think about how much they can help these ladies and fight against disease and cancer and all these other uh ailments that we just need donations.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: You need people like Phil and Penny to come to the table.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: And so many people don't understand the amount of philanthropy that those people do, and they're like, oh yeah, and they talk so negatively about the rich because they're not rich, and they just figure that everything is negative.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: And you even just look at some of the other biggest billionaires out there, um, whether it's Bill Gates or it's you know the owner of Amazon, all these people give a ton of money, and and thank God that they do because it's falling out of their ears.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: But Phil and Penny have never stopped.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: The amount of money they give to the university, the amount of money they give to hospitals, and this is just a testament to that again.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: So a tip of the cap from us um for those two and how they never give up on helping people, because you could take your billions and go home.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: You could take your billions and you could will it down to the family and disclose your eyes to it.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: And they haven't done that.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: I think it's really commendable.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: It really is, Drew.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: And and you know, um you can only hope that people that amass this type of wealth have a bit of a charitable heart.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Uh, because, you know, for every one of them, maybe two of them that give this type of gift to hospitals or cancer research or insert uh, you know, charitable cause here, there's another one or two of them that just go buy a yacht and and secure that generational family wealth that you're talking about.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: And I think the sad part about it is all of us that live, you know, either paycheck to paycheck or just within our means, and we don't have a ton of extra money to throw around on toys, we all look at it and realize that even if some of these billionaires that don't like to donate their money gave the type of gifts that Phil and Penny Knight gave, they would still have the generational wealth that they are already going to have.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: So um, hats off to Phil and Penny again.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: Obviously, being a Duck fan, uh, had a special place in my heart for him.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Narrowly missed out on getting to go to Phil's booth with you at that Oregon game.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: That's a funny story, maybe for another time.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh, I was almost up there.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: It's so much better if it was you.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: Well, he wouldn't have talked to me either, though, right?
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: It would have been both of us saying, but I was up there with a buddy who'd been overserved, and I was like, just don't do anything stupid up here.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: And we get up there and he's mumbling, trying to talk to like the wives of the people in the suite.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: I'm like, don't touch anything, don't talk to anyone.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: What are we doing?
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: And I love the guy, but it was just not ideal.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: You would have been a much better option.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: But Phil and Penny, um, I am just so impressed yet again uh with their ability to give, and that will be a lasting impact long after they aren't around anymore.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Now I feel for Phil because the motto coming into the ducks season was this one's for Phil.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: We're gonna do this for Phil.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: I heard it from multiple players who seem to really mean that.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Even Dante Moore said the same thing, and then of course we lost the game against Oklahoma State.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: Well, now there is a conversation going around uh multiple players from Oklahoma State.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you saw this, Marcus, came out and said that they got a read on the ducks that the way that our offensive line lined up telegraphed whether we were going to run or pass to a point where they were able to call our plays the whole time.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and uh Drew, the most unfortunate part about this might not even be the loss.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: It might be that we had this bubble up last year after the Indiana thrashing that we took in the Peach Bowl.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Um, Indiana's linebackers came out.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: They didn't say what it was because they're a national championship caliber team, and Oklahoma State is a bunch of cowboys.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: Um, and hey, no harm intended with that.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: It's very much the truth, but Oklahoma State was much more uh giving in terms of the media when it came to talking about what they'd actually seen.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: There was also reports of Dante Moore's foot placement, which I've gone back and watched the video, and it's a hundred percent, man.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: He's standing square when he hands the ball off, and he's got his right foot staggered back every time he's passing.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: What concerns me about this from a zoomed out perspective, Drew, is if this was happening in the Indiana game when we got blown out at the end of last year, and if it made its way all the way through fall and spring camp and showed its ugly head this uh this year, we have a lot bigger problem than just figuring out tells and figuring out how to mass that stuff.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: The coaching staff didn't catch it after the national championship team came out and said, that's why we beat you.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: And now we've got a bottom of the barrel team talking about that's why we beat you.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: This shouldn't be a problem at a blue chip uh loaded university.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: It just shouldn't.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: And maybe this is Dan Lanning's inexperience as a head coach showing uh its its ugly face.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Maybe this is the inexperience of the coordinators.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: I haven't been within a high-level football program enough to figure that out, but this is a very glaring problem.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Because think about it.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: How many other times have you heard a story like this in college football where a tiny, not very good school beat somebody that's supposed to be a powerhouse and a lot of it came down to knowing what plays we were gonna run?
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: That's unheard of since the Connor Stallion days, Drew.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because if you if I know that you're going to run, I can sell out.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: If I know you're gonna pass, I can play back in conservative and drop somebody into coverage to come intercept the ball.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: And and then all of a sudden you're like, wait, why is nobody open?
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: Well, because they all dropped.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: They know that you're not going to run the ball.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: And you got to think about the defensive line's perspective in that too.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: If you don't know as a defensive lineman whether it's a run or a pass, every play action is meant to freeze you.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: You can't rush the passer with your ears pinned back because what if he hands it off?
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: I'm still responsible for the line of scrimmage as a defensive lineman.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: If you know that that play action is BS because you saw his feet or you saw the lineman's feet, you don't have to worry about the run and you just get to go on a straight pass rushing rep like it's third and 25 every single down.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's in it, it that's a ripple effect, Drew, that goes all the way through because if you can't see that happening on the field and you don't know that's what's causing it, the demoralization that comes from having every play get shoved right back in your face compounds throughout the game until you end up fumbling away your only chance uh with less than two minutes to go.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: I couldn't agree more.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: I and it puts it's just so frustrating to me.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: You know, personally, if I got beat by the same team in the way that we did against Indiana multiple times, I would be in the dark looking at every piece of footwork.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: Every I mean, you had all summer.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: You had actually you had you had eight months or whatever it was to sit there and and figure that out.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: And I'm not here to just chastise the coaching staff because they've brought us a lot of milk and honey.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: And it's been a great, a great, great run.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: And, you know, it really is about how you can overcome adversity.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: But what do you think, Marcus?
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: Do you think we'll be able now that because I'm not the first guy to say that, you know, that's been out all week, that that's a a problem that's still here.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: Is that something you think we can fix in a week's time and you know, change that mechanic or at least try to mask it a little bit so it doesn't look so obvious?
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: I would certainly hope so.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Um, I I I don't know if it's possible or not.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: You know, I would need to go back and watch Dante Moore all the way back when he played at UCLA and see if this was a problem when he was a freshman.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: We know it was a problem last year because they told us, and we know it's a problem this year because they told us.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: So get in the lab and figure it out.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: And if you can't, then you have to start thinking about making a change.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: This is the hardest part because we all love Dante Moore.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: We love the person that he is, we love the ambassador for the university that he is, we all love Dan Lanning, we all love everything about this program.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: And not one of us would have told you that we would even mention Dylan Riola's name this year until injury happened.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: But if this is a fundamental problem with Dante Moore at quarterback and it is completely throwing off the balance of the game, you either have to fix it or you have to make a change at the position.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: And that's one thing that hasn't been talked about in the media much, Drew.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: That, you know, I don't know how close it is.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Again, none of us have an inside line on the program.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: But if I'm sitting here as a head coach and I'm looking at as the head coach of one of the biggest football programs of the last 10 years, and I'm watching the quarterback's foot placement or the lineman's foot placement lose us games that we should that really nobody they shouldn't even be competing with us roster to roster, then you have to make a change.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: You have to do something as the coach.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: You can't keep going back to the well and expecting different results.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: Because if you do, that's when the university starts to look at the coach and say, hey, do we have like a fundamental problem with the coaching staff here?
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: So there might be some strings pulled this year, Drew, that we never saw coming at the beginning of this year.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: Um and again, I said this in the last podcast never a better week than uh than now to have Portland State come into town.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: And and some of the strings that may be pulled are all coordinator type of strings as well.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: Because, you know, here's a problem that I have is we're spending$45 million on the roster.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: We've got all this money tied into victory, and then we're letting coordinators go at the end of each season.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: When we have a good season, they become a head coach somewhere else, and then we start again, and then they become a head coach somewhere else.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: Why don't we back out some of that money and pay a coordinator who we know is epic to stay and be like, hey, I know you want to be a head coach.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: We're gonna pay you like one, and you're gonna stay here, and we're gonna win a natty, and then you can go, but we're gonna stay here for now because what's happening is you know, same roster, different coordinators, we look like trash.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: And, you know, the rumor is are we going the the question the questioned rumor is are we gonna replace a coordinator this early or are we gonna bring in like a guru, like a Brian Kelly or a Bobby Petrino type character who comes in as a special assistant to the head coach and helps us write a ship?
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: Is there an answer?
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: I don't think you could fire a coordinator this early in the season, uh, given that he's only been at the job for as long as he has.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: I don't think that's a fair shake.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: And I also don't think that that probably sends positive ripples throughout the locker room unless those coordinators have lost the team.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: And when you hear all the way that the players talked about their new coordinators coming into the season, they haven't.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Those guys believe in their coordinators right now.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: So you rip that away, you cause more problems in the six inches between the ears, Drew.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Um, bringing in a guru, I mean, maybe.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: Hey, at this point in time, after last week, as a Duck fan, I'm telling you, call Northwestern and offer Chip Kelly a cooler hard hat to come be that guy because he is uh he understands offense better than almost anybody.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: And even with Northwestern, he can find a way to rip off a 75-yard run.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: We could have used one of those in the Oklahoma State game, and we would have been having a different conversation right now, Drew.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: So easy answer, absolutely not.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: But I do kind of like your idea there of bringing in a guru.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because we could use someone to just spice things up a little bit, someone who's not going to um make Dan feel like he's on the hot seat.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: I don't think any of that's deserved at this point.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: Guy hadn't even lost to a team who isn't ranked before.
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: He hadn't lost in four years to a team that wasn't in the natty.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: So I would never say go replace Dan.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't say replace them either.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: I just hear the rumblings of the people who are baling water out of their boat right now and are kind of freaking out about it.
- 35:21SPEAKER_02: I would say pump the brakes, get to Odson this weekend.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: We'll see against Portland State a chance to kind of sharpen the knife.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: I like to say come for the ducks, stay for the Marcus.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: If you, and the reason I say that is this weekend, the Ducks play Friday.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: On Saturday, Marcus and his band um are going to be playing at the cooler, which is the the duck bar on the main street, right there on MLK, down the street from Odson.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: I know a lot of people will already be there on the required two-night stay at these hotels.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: You don't get to book one night a lot of them.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: You have to stay two nights.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: So if you decide to do Friday, Saturday looking for something hot on Saturday, then the cooler's your spot.
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: Uh, LimeWire Summer, is that your name of your band?
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: We're gonna be starting at 9 p.m.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: sharp and we will be playing all the way until midnight.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: So you got three hours of your favorite pop punk and emo hits from the uh late 90s, early 2000s and beyond.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: Drew, I'm gonna be honest with you.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: We've got a couple, uh, maybe an 80s song in there.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, we've even got a Ramones cover in there.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: So we'll reach all the way back to the 70s.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: But if you're a fan of Green Day, Blink 182, Fallout Boy, Yellow Card, uh, Newfound Glory, and many more, come out and party with us, man.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: We're gonna have a great time.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: You could win a free tattoo from Area 51, uh, free tattoo from my wife, actually, out at Area 51 in Springfield.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: Um, and uh yeah, we're got a ton of merch.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: We're making buttons.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Um, we're we're making, we got old stickers to hand out.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's gonna be a lot of fun, man.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: And really, uh, at our last show, we realized that the nostalgia that this music is bringing people is is uh greatly needed at this point in time.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: So come out and just forget about whatever happened in the game on Friday and party with us at the cooler Saturday night, 9 p.m.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: for Limewire Summer.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be great.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: And I gotta say this before we go.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: You know, I was talking about how I didn't have tickets to the to the game.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: And a guy who listens to the podcast, Tony, who's the man, uh, he offered me his season tickets to the game.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: And so I was like, oh, well, I'm in kind of a tough spot because like I don't have a sitter for my kids yet.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: I left, you know, children or I left a child with my parents last time, and like, you know, that whole thing.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: And so I walk in the kitchen and I go, you know, Tony offered us those tickets, but like we don't have a place to stay.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: It's a night game.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: And my kids, uh, they love you, Marcus.
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: This is what this is how it goes.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: Uh Lucy goes, Oh, we'll just stay at Marcus's.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: I go, You can't just stay at Marcus's.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: He's got a show in the morning.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: And Josie runs in and yells, Corgies! Because Marcus has two Corgis.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, guys, guys, he's got a show the next day.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: And Lucy's like, it's fine.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: We'll stay the night.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: And then I can't wait to go to the show.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, Okay, there are two things that you need to know.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: First of all, I was offered a pair of tickets, not two pairs of tickets.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: There are no tickets for you.
