Latest / Reformed Thinking / The Believer’s Battlefield: Flesh and Spirit (Galatians 5:17)
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to the show. We are doing something a little
- 0:04different today. Usually we are looking at tech
- 0:06or history or, you know, some big sociological trend.
- 0:09But today, today we are looking under the hood of the human
- 0:13engine. We are looking at, well, us, and
- 0:16specifically we are calling this reformed thinking.
- 0:19It is good to be here, and we should probably clarify right
- 0:23off the bat who we are in this context.
- 0:26We are approaching this deep dive as 2 Protestant Christians.
- 0:29Right. We are coming at this from a
- 0:31very specific angle. We hold to the Westminster
- 0:33Confession of faith. We love theology.
- 0:35But more than that, we're eager to see how that theology
- 0:38actually hits the pavement of real life.
- 0:41Because if it just stays in the books, it doesn't help anyone.
- 0:44Spot on. We are not here to just discuss
- 0:46abstract ideas or you know, move pieces around on a chess board.
- 0:49We are looking at the mechanics of the soul.
- 0:51And the specific mechanic we were looking at today is the
- 0:53internal battlefield. The topic is Galatians 5, verse
- 0:5617. Which reads For the desires of
- 0:59the flesh are against the spirit, and the desires of the
- 1:01spirit are against the flesh. It is the paradox of the
- 1:04Christian experience, isn't it? I mean, here is the hook for you
- 1:07listening. If we are redeemed people, if we
- 1:10are new creations, why is it still so hard?
- 1:13Why do we still struggle with sin?
- 1:15Why isn't Holiness just automatic?
- 1:18That is the big question, and sadly a lot of modern answers to
- 1:22that are just shallow pragmatism.
- 1:24They offer life hacks, but our mission today is to examine the
- 1:28anatomy of this war. We want to move beyond just
- 1:31trying to do better and get to a robust biblical understanding of
- 1:35sanctification. I think everyone listening can
- 1:37relate to that frustration. You think, OK, I am a Christian
- 1:40now, I shouldn't want to do these things anymore, but the
- 1:43want is still there. It is.
- 1:44And that gap between what we know we should be and what we
- 1:47actually are, That is where despair sets in for a lot of
- 1:50people. They start questioning if they
- 1:52are even saved. They think if I were really a
- 1:54Christian, I wouldn't have snapped at my wife or I would
- 1:58have had that thought. Well, they go the other way and
- 2:00just redefine sin so they don't feel bad about it, yeah.
- 2:03Right. They lower the bar so they can
- 2:05jump over it. But Paul doesn't let us do
- 2:07either of those things. He forces us to look at the
- 2:10reality of the conflict. So let's unpack this.
- 2:13We have a lot of material here, specifically drawing from 2
- 2:16heavy hitting sources, the Believers Battlefield and the
- 2:20War Within. We are going to break this down
- 2:23systematically. We are, and to do that properly,
- 2:25we have to start with context. We cannot just parachute into
- 2:28verse 17. I feel like we always say that
- 2:30context is king, but why here? Why focus on this specific
- 2:34verse? I mean the Bible is a massive
- 2:36book, why stop the car here? It is a fair question.
- 2:39One of our sources uses a methodology called the Five
- 2:42Anchor Questions. It is a way of ensuring we
- 2:44aren't just making things up. The first question is always
- 2:47what does the text say? But the second is crucial.
- 2:51Why is it here? What is the author's intent?
- 2:53And then the others are How does it testify to Christ?
- 2:55What must we believe or do, and how do we say it clearly?
- 2:58Precisely. Those keep us grounded.
- 3:00So regarding that second question, authorial intent, what
- 3:03is Paul's intent in Galatians? Because when I read Galatians,
- 3:07honestly, Paul sounds angry. He sounds really upset.
- 3:10He is upset. You have to look at the literary
- 3:13context. Paul is writing a defense of
- 3:15justification by faith alone. The churches in Galatia were
- 3:19under attack by a group called the Judaizers.
- 3:22The legalists. Right.
- 3:23These were false teachers who were saying, yes, believe in
- 3:25Jesus, but that is not enough. You also need to add the works
- 3:29of the law. You need to be circumcised.
- 3:31You need to follow the Mosaic code to be truly accepted.
- 3:34They were adding a plus sign to the Gospel Faith Plus works.
- 3:38It is like a subscription model where you get the free trial of
- 3:41Jesus, but to keep the service you have to pay with your own
- 3:45effort. That is a brilliant way to put
- 3:46it, and Paul sees this as a lethal threat.
- 3:49He argues that if you add anything to Christ, you lose
- 3:51Christ completely. But, and here's the twist, when
- 3:54you preach radical freedom in Christ, when you say it is not
- 3:58about your works, another danger pops up on the other side.
- 4:02Antinomianism. Yes, the idea that I am free so
- 4:06I can do whatever I want, it is using freedom as a license for
- 4:10sin. So Paul is walking this razor's
- 4:13edge. He has to crush the legalists
- 4:15who want to enslave you to the law, but he also has to crush
- 4:18the idea that grace means you can just live in sin.
- 4:22So he is fighting A2 front war. On one side he has the guys with
- 4:26the clipboards checking off rules.
- 4:28On the other side, he has the guys who think rules don't exist
- 4:31at all. Precisely.
- 4:32And that brings us to the logic of the word for in the Greek it
- 4:36is the word gar. Verse 17 starts with gar for the
- 4:39desires of the flesh. It is a small word, but our
- 4:42sources point out it is doing heavy lifting.
- 4:44It connects the thought back to what he just said.
- 4:45It is the hinge. Verse 16 gives the command walk
- 4:48by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the
- 4:51flesh. Verse 17 starts with four four
- 4:53because it explains why you have to walk by the Spirit.
- 4:55It explains why the Christian life cannot be lived on
- 4:57autopilot. Because there is a war on.
- 4:59Because there is of opposition. If there were no resistance, you
- 5:02wouldn't need a command to walk or fight.
- 5:05You would just drift into holiness.
- 5:07But Paul is saying no, you must actively rely on the Spirit,
- 5:10because for the flesh is actively fighting you.
- 5:13I like that image of drifting. We tend to think that if we just
- 5:16leave things alone, they will get better.
- 5:19But in a fallen world, if you leave a garden alone, you don't
- 5:22get roses, you get weeds. Entropy applies to the soul as
- 5:26much as it applies to physics. If you are passive, the flesh
- 5:30takes over. That is the default setting of
- 5:32our remaining corruption. So this isn't just a random
- 5:35proverb, it is part of a complete unit or a pericope as
- 5:38the scholars say. Galatians 5.16 through 18.
- 5:42That is right, you have the contrast.
- 5:44Legalism on one side, license on the other, and in the middle is
- 5:47spirit LED Liberty and clarification is needed here.
- 5:50This isn't just about behaving better, it is about the sphere
- 5:52of existence. You are either operating in the
- 5:54sphere of the law, the sphere of the flesh, or the sphere of the
- 5:57spirit. It is like atmosphere.
- 5:59If you were in the flesh, you are breathing toxic fumes.
- 6:02If you are in the spirit, you are breathing oxygen.
- 6:05That is a good analogy and Paul is saying you cannot hold your
- 6:08breath. You are breathing one or the
- 6:09other. OK, so we have set the stage.
- 6:12We know why we are here. Now let's look at the
- 6:14combatants. We have the flesh versus the
- 6:16spirit. Let's start with the flesh.
- 6:18And I have to ask, when normal people hear flesh, they think of
- 6:21skin or meat, or maybe like sensual stuff?
- 6:25This is where we have to be very careful with our definitions.
- 6:28In Greek the word is sarks, and the misconception is that sarks
- 6:32just means your physical body, like your literal skin and
- 6:34bones. Right, like the body is bad and
- 6:37The Ghost Inside is good. That is a Greek dualism idea
- 6:40that the spiritual is good and physical matter is evil.
- 6:42That is not what Paul means at all.
- 6:44When Paul uses sarks here, he is talking about the active,
- 6:47malignant, totally depraved human nature that remains in the
- 6:51believer. So it is not just about sensual
- 6:54sins like lust or gluttony. No, and that is a critical
- 6:57point. The flesh certainly includes
- 6:59those things, but it also includes religious sins, pride,
- 7:03self righteousness, reliance on the law.
- 7:07When a Judaizer tries to earn God's favor by getting
- 7:09circumcised, Paul says that is flesh.
- 7:11That is fascinating. So you can be sitting in church
- 7:15looking very pious, trying to earn your way to heaven, and you
- 7:17are operating in the flesh just as much as the guy out partying.
- 7:20You nailed it. It is a radical redefinition
- 7:23compared to the Stoic philosophy of the time.
- 7:25The Stoics thought the flesh was just the body, Paul says.
- 7:29No, it is the rebellion in your heart.
- 7:31It is the eye that wants to be God.
- 7:33Yes, it is the desire for autonomy.
- 7:35It is the part of us that says I know better than God or I can
- 7:39save myself. That is all sarks.
- 7:42OK, so that is the antagonist. It is a monster.
- 7:45Who is the protagonist? The spirit Numa.
- 7:48And we must be clear, this is not the human spirit.
- 7:51This is not team spirit or a good attitude.
- 7:54This is the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity.
- 7:57A sovereign antagonist to the flesh.
- 7:58Yes, this is evidence of the new age invading the old age.
- 8:02The believer has the very presence of God living inside
- 8:05them. That blows my mind when I stop
- 8:07to think about it. We aren't just people who have a
- 8:09new instruction manual, we have a new engine.
- 8:11Better than an engine, we have a new person.
- 8:14The Holy Spirit is a person, not a force, and He has desires, He
- 8:21has a will, and His will is diametrically opposed to our
- 8:25flesh. Now let's look at the action in
- 8:27the text. It says they desire against each
- 8:29other. The Greek word is epithumae.
- 8:31And the syntax matters here. It is in the present tense that
- 8:35indicates continuous unyielding warfare.
- 8:38This isn't a one time skirmish you had when you got converted,
- 8:41It is a constant state. And the word desire or lust, it
- 8:44sounds intense. It is.
- 8:46It means a driving over mastering passion.
- 8:49The flesh isn't just mildly annoyed by the spirit, it hates
- 8:52the spirit. It hunts the spirit, and the
- 8:55spirit targets the flesh with equal intensity.
- 8:57There's reciprocity here. So the spirit isn't just a
- 8:59passive observer just sitting back and watching us struggle.
- 9:02Not at all. The Spirit is aggressive against
- 9:05sin. When you feel that conviction,
- 9:06that sharp pain when you do something wrong, that is the
- 9:09Spirit at war. That is him attacking the
- 9:11cancer. Our sources point out another
- 9:13Greek term here, anti kaitai, opposed to one another.
- 9:16That is military language. It means lined up in battle
- 9:20array like 2 armies entrenched in a trench warfare situation.
- 9:25And here is where it gets incredibly interesting.
- 9:28I was waiting for. That the verb is in the middle
- 9:30voice in Greek grammar that suggests that these two forces
- 9:34are intrinsically, by their very nature, enemies.
- 9:38They cannot negotiate. There is no truce possible.
- 9:41You cannot sit the flesh and the spirit down at a table and work
- 9:44out a compromise. They are matter and antimatter.
- 9:47That explains so much of the frustration we feel because we
- 9:50want a truce. We want to be able to say, OK
- 9:52God, I will give you Sunday morning, but let me have my
- 9:55Friday night. Exactly.
- 9:56Or sorry, Precisely. We want a coalition government,
- 9:59but the spirit and the flesh are both totalitarian.
- 10:03They both want 100% of the territory.
- 10:05They will not share the throne. Which leads us right into the
- 10:07next part, the result clause. The text says so that you may
- 10:11not do the things that you please.
- 10:12This is the outcome of the battle, and again, the grammar
- 10:15helps us. It is a subjunctive mood with an
- 10:17indefinite construction. It basically translates to
- 10:19whatever you. It sounds like a restriction.
- 10:22It is a double sided restriction.
- 10:24Think of it this way. On one side, the spirit prevents
- 10:27the believer from indulging the flesh to the fullest extent.
- 10:31So even when we sin, we aren't sinning as bad as we could
- 10:34because the Spirit is pulling us back.
- 10:36That is it. He acts as a restraint.
- 10:38You might want to punch someone in the face, but the spirit
- 10:41restrains you to just a harsh word that is grace, even though
- 10:44it is still sin. But on the other side, and this
- 10:47is the hard pill to swallow, the flesh prevents the believer from
- 10:51obeying God perfectly. We can't be as holy as we want
- 10:53to be. Right.
- 10:54We want to pray with pure focus, but our mind wanders.
- 10:58We want to love our neighbors selflessly, but a little spike
- 11:01of pride comes in. This is the hindrance of
- 11:03righteousness. This really destroys the myth of
- 11:06free will and sanctification doesn't.
- 11:07It it does, the believer's will is contested territory.
- 11:11Wanting does not automatically lead to doing.
- 11:14You wake up and say I want to be patient today.
- 11:17That is the want, but the doing that has to go through the
- 11:20battlefield of the flesh. It brings to mind Romans 7.
- 11:24For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is
- 11:27what I keep on doing. Precisely, Galatians 5.17 is the
- 11:32theological explanation for the groan of Romans 7.
- 11:36It explains why the Christian life feels like a struggle,
- 11:39because it is a literal struggle.
- 11:40I think a lot of people feel like that struggle means they
- 11:44are failing. Like if I am struggling I must
- 11:46be doing it wrong. That is a lie of the enemy.
- 11:49The struggle doesn't mean you are failing, it means you are
- 11:51fighting. If you weren't struggling, that
- 11:53would mean you had surrendered. That is a huge comfort.
- 11:56So what does this mean for our doctrine?
- 11:58Let's move to our next segment, theological synthesis.
- 12:02We said we are standing on the Westminster Confession.
- 12:05How does this connect? Well, first it connects to the
- 12:07covenant of grace, but specifically look at Westminster
- 12:10Confession chapter 13 on sanctification.
- 12:13It says that remnants of corruption abide in every part.
- 12:16Remnants of corruption. That is a great phrase.
- 12:17It sounds almost like something from a fantasy novel.
- 12:19It does. It means the dominion of sin is
- 12:21destroyed. Sin is no longer our king, but
- 12:24the presence of sin remains. It is like an occupying army
- 12:28that has been defeated but is still hiding in the hills
- 12:31launching guerrilla attacks. So the true king is on the
- 12:34throne, but there are rebels in the woods.
- 12:36Yes, and they are dangerous. They can still hurt you, they
- 12:41can still cause chaos, but they cannot retake the throne.
- 12:45That is the difference between a believer and an unbeliever.
- 12:48The unbeliever has sin on the throne.
- 12:51The believer has Christ on the throne, but sin in the
- 12:53territory. And this brings up the
- 12:55distinction between definitive and progressive sanctification.
- 12:58Can we break that down? Sure, definitive sanctification
- 13:00is a one time event. It is our union with Christ.
- 13:03Galatians 5.24 says we have crucified the flesh.
- 13:06Past tense. Our legal status has changed.
- 13:09We are no longer slaves. That is the IT is finished part
- 13:12of the equation, yes. But then there is progressive
- 13:16sanctification. That is the ongoing war
- 13:18described in verse 17. That is the daily reality.
- 13:21We live in a two age overlap. We are citizens of the new age,
- 13:24the spirit, but we are still dragging around the corpse of
- 13:27the old age, the flesh. We're already in the Not yet.
- 13:30That is the concept. We are already saved, but we are
- 13:33not yet glorified. We are already wholly in status,
- 13:36but not yet completely wholly in practice.
- 13:38And this also touches on the third use of the law in the
- 13:41reformed tradition. It does.
- 13:43Could you lay out those uses for us?
- 13:45Of course. The first use is to restrain
- 13:47evil in society. It is like a muzzle.
- 13:49It keeps people from destroying each other.
- 13:52The second use is to show us our sin and drive us to Christ.
- 13:56It acts as a mirror. And the third use.
- 13:59The third use is for the believer.
- 14:01It guides us to grateful obedience.
- 14:03It is a light to our path. In this context, the law exposes
- 14:07the flesh. It shows us, hey, that thing you
- 14:10are doing, that is the flesh. But the law can't fix it, no?
- 14:14That is the law, gospel distinction.
- 14:15The Law demands what it cannot produce.
- 14:17The Spirit provides the strength to do what the law demands.
- 14:20The gospel provides the remedy, Christ's victory, and the Spirit
- 14:23applies that victory to fight the war.
- 14:25So we need the law to show us the standard, but we need the
- 14:28spirit to give us the ability to meet it.
- 14:30Yes. If you just have law, you have
- 14:32despair. If you just have spirit without
- 14:34law, you have unguided and mysticism.
- 14:36You need both. Now this brings us to polemics.
- 14:39Polemics just means we are fighting against errors.
- 14:42We are drawing some lines in the sand.
- 14:44Right. Truth is defined by what it
- 14:46opposes, and this text opposes several major errors out there.
- 14:50First up, perfectionism. The Wesleyan or Armenian view.
- 14:55This text is the death knell for the idea of sinless perfection
- 14:59or entire sanctification in this life.
- 15:01If the flesh always opposes the Spirit, and if that opposition
- 15:05prevents us from doing perfectly what we please, then claiming
- 15:08you don't sin anymore is, well, it is a lie.
- 15:11It contradicts the Holy Spirit Himself.
- 15:12It does. It actually redefines sin to
- 15:15make it attainable. Usually perfectionists have to
- 15:17lower the standard of God's law to say they are keeping it.
- 15:20They say, well I didn't intentionally sin so it doesn't
- 15:22count. But the Bible Bible says even
- 15:24our unintentional sins are sins. Yes, the standard is God's
- 15:27perfection, not our good intentions.
- 15:30What about the other side? The modern evangelical
- 15:32landscape? The seeker sensitive movement.
- 15:35This text critiques the therapeutic Christianity that is
- 15:38so popular today, the kind that treats sin as just a mistake or
- 15:42a bad habit or brokenness. You hear that a lot.
- 15:44I'm just a little messy or I have some struggles, right?
- 15:47Galatians 5.17 doesn't say you are messy.
- 15:50It says you have a malignant, hostile monster living inside
- 15:53you called the Flesh. It refutes the idea that we just
- 15:56need some sychological hacks or better branding to fix our
- 16:00lives. We need a savior and we need the
- 16:02Sirits operation within us, not just a life coach.
- 16:05It seems like we're scared to use the word sin anymore.
- 16:08We want to soften. It we do, because sin is
- 16:11offensive. But you can't cure a disease if
- 16:13you misdiagnose it. If you have cancer and the
- 16:16doctor tells you it is just a rash, he is killing you.
- 16:18Paul is the honest doctor. He says it is terminal flesh.
- 16:21You need the chemo of the Spirit.
- 16:23Then there is antinomianism. We touched on this, but let's
- 16:26hit it harder. The Free Grace theology.
- 16:28The let go and let God crowd or the one saved always saved.
- 16:32So it doesn't matter what I do crowd.
- 16:33This text says the Spirit opposes the flesh.
- 16:35He doesn't coddle it. If you are comfortable with your
- 16:38sin, if you are not fighting, you are not walking by the
- 16:40Spirit. So if you are sitting on the
- 16:42couch eating spiritual potato chips, engaging in sin, and you
- 16:46feel fine about it. That is a terrible sign that
- 16:49suggests the Spirit might not be there to oppose you at all.
- 16:52Our sources also bring up secular frameworks like critical
- 16:55race theory and liberal theology, and we are just
- 16:57reporting what the sources say here.
- 16:59We aren't taking political sides, but how does this text
- 17:02interact with those ideas? The sources point out that it
- 17:05comes down to where you locate the problem.
- 17:07Secular ideologies almost always locate the problem of humanity
- 17:11in external structures, in society systems, education,
- 17:15economics. They suggest that if we just fix
- 17:17the system, man will be good. It is the Rousseau idea.
- 17:20Man is Born Free, but everywhere he is in chains.
- 17:23Right, but Paul says the chains are inside.
- 17:26Paul locates the war inside the human chest.
- 17:28The problem isn't just a lack of education or a bad environment.
- 17:32The problem is the depraved nature.
- 17:34You can put a man in a perfect society like Adam and Eden, and
- 17:37his flesh will still rebel. So we cannot just legislate our
- 17:41way to righteousness. We can restrain evil with laws,
- 17:43but we cannot create goodness. Only the Spirit can do that.
- 17:47So the solution the Bible offers isn't just structural change, it
- 17:50is regeneration and sanctification.
- 17:53That is a heavy reality, yeah. So let's pivot to application.
- 17:57What do we do with this? How does this hit our head,
- 18:00heart and hands? Let's start with the head
- 18:02doctrine. We have to acknowledge the total
- 18:05depravity of the remaining flesh.
- 18:07We have to stop being surprised when we sin or when we see sin
- 18:10in the Church. We act so shocked when a pastor
- 18:12falls or a leader messes up. We shouldn't be.
- 18:15We should be grieved, but not shocked.
- 18:18The flesh is capable of absolutely anything.
- 18:21And there is comfort there, right?
- 18:22Huge comfort. As we said, the struggle is
- 18:24actually a sign of life. Dead men don't fight.
- 18:28If you are grieving over your sin, if you feel this internal
- 18:30war, that is proof that the Spirit is there fighting back.
- 18:33The unbeliever doesn't feel this specific conflict because they
- 18:36are just in the flesh. They are going with the current.
- 18:40So if you are exhausted from the fight, take heart.
- 18:43The fight means you are alive. That is the message.
- 18:46Now the heart affections. This doctrine should cultivate 2
- 18:49things, mortification and vivification.
- 18:52Big theological words break them down for us.
- 18:55Mortification means killing sin, cultivating a holy hatred for
- 18:59the flesh. You don't play with a pet Viper,
- 19:01you kill it. You starve it.
- 19:03How do you starve it practically?
- 19:04You cut off the supply lines if you struggle with lust.
- 19:07You don't watch certain movies if you struggle with greed.
- 19:10You give money away until it hurts.
- 19:11You do radical things to kill the desire.
- 19:14And vivification. Vivification means coming alive
- 19:17to the Spirit, cultivating a desperate dependence.
- 19:21It is breathing in the oxygen. We should reject passive
- 19:24mysticism, you know, just waiting for a ZAP from God and
- 19:28embrace active warfare. It means praying Spirit help me
- 19:3150 times a day. And hands practice.
- 19:34How does this look on a random Tuesday morning?
- 19:36For the individual, it means early resistance.
- 19:39Don't wait for the sin to grow into a giant.
- 19:41Kill the monster while it is little.
- 19:43When you feel that first twinge of envy or lust, go to war right
- 19:46then. Don't entertain it.
- 19:48Don't invite it in for coffee. Slam the door.
- 19:50What about for the family? Fathers need to lead by the
- 19:53spirit, not by fleshly authoritarianism, anger,
- 19:56bullying, that is flesh, leading with patience and love, that is
- 20:00spirit. When a dad gets home from work
- 20:02and he is tired, his flesh wants to just check out or snap at the
- 20:06kids to be quiet. Guilty we all are but the
- 20:09Spirit. It says serve them, love them.
- 20:11That is the war on a Tuesday night.
- 20:13And office bears pastors and elders.
- 20:15Ministry must not be showy. The flesh loves to be on stage.
- 20:19The flesh loves applause. True ministry is pastoral,
- 20:24sacrificial. It is about replacing the works
- 20:26of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit.
- 20:28A pastor operating in the flesh is a dangerous thing.
- 20:31He uses people to build his platform.
- 20:34A pastor in the Spirit uses his platform to build people.
- 20:37Which brings us to the ultimate solution.
- 20:39Well, the final solution I should say.
- 20:40Christ centered proclamation. We can't just preach.
- 20:44Fight harder. No, that would just be moralism.
- 20:46We have to preach Christ. We have to look at Jesus as the
- 20:49only man whoever walked this earth without a warring flesh.
- 20:51He is the second Adam. He didn't have this internal
- 20:54civil war. No, he was tempted externally by
- 20:57Satan in the wilderness, but he had no internal traitor.
- 21:01His heart was perfectly aligned with the Father, and the beauty
- 21:04of the Gospel is that he took the penalty for our fleshly
- 21:08rebellion. And this is where Union with
- 21:10Christ comes back in to play. We fight not for victory, but
- 21:14from victory. The indicative the fact that you
- 21:17are in Christ, that you are dead to sins.
- 21:20Dominion grounds the imperative, the command to walk by the
- 21:23spirit. You are a soldier in an army
- 21:26that has already won the war, even though the skirmishes are
- 21:28still happening. That changes the whole mindset.
- 21:31I'm not fighting to get God to like me.
- 21:33I am fighting because I'm already His Son.
- 21:35Yes. If you fight to own love, you
- 21:38will burnout. If you fight because you're all
- 21:39loved, you will endure. So as we wrap up, let's do our
- 21:42outro. We always want to address 2
- 21:44groups first. The person listening who might
- 21:45not be a believer. If you are not in Christ, you
- 21:48need to know this. You are not at war, you are in
- 21:51the flesh. You are at peace with sin, even
- 21:53if it is destroying your life and that path leads to death.
- 21:58The call is to repentance and faith.
- 22:01Flee to Christ. He is the only one who can
- 22:04deliver you from this body of death.
- 22:06You cannot win this war on your own.
- 22:08You need a new nature entirely. And for the believer, the weary
- 22:12St. who feels beat up by their own heart.
- 22:14Look to the blessed hope Christ is returning.
- 22:17This war is temporary. You will not have to fight your
- 22:19flesh forever. There is a day coming when the
- 22:21flesh will be gone and you will be free to love God, a neighbor,
- 22:24perfectly. The victory is certain.
- 22:25Hold the line. Walking by the Spirit is the
- 22:28only path to true freedom. Freedom to love, that is what it
- 22:31comes down to. Well, that is a massive amount
- 22:33to chew on. Before we sign off, I want to
- 22:35leave you with a final thought to Mull over.
- 22:37We spent so much of our lives wishing for an end to the
- 22:40internal conflict. We just want peace.
- 22:43But what if the peace we crave in this life is actually the
- 22:46very thing that would put our souls to sleep?
- 22:48What if the war itself is the grace that keeps us awake and
- 22:50clinging to Christ? That is something to think
- 22:53about. Keep fighting.
- 22:55See you next time.
