- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. Ember Friday, September twenty fifth in the year of our Lord 2026. Of this Ember day, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, as on the other Fridays in Ember week of the year, the station is held at the Church of the Holy Apostles in Rome. The epistle reminds us of the words of the prophet, O. C.
- 0:39To Israel. Be converted to the Lord thy God since thy iniquity has caused thee to fall. And OC announces that the almighty, seeing the spirit of prayer and penitence of the Israelites, will heal their bruises and turn away his anger from them. A fine harvest of olives, wheat, and wine. That is to say the riches of the autumnal season consecrated to God by the September Ember days.
- 1:16Blessings from on high are promised thus symbolically to the chosen people. What God did for repentant Israel, the savior did for Mary Magdalene who says the gospel was pardoned many sins because she had loved much. And the church ordains her priests during these days of penance so that they may repeat throughout the centuries their master's example and pardon those who repent. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 2:07The introit. Let every heart that longs for the Lord rejoice. To the Lord have recourse and there find strength. Beg continually for his presence. Praise the Lord and call upon his name.
- 2:27Tell the story of his doings for all the nations to hear. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Let every heart that longs for the Lord rejoice. To the Lord have recourse and there find strength.
- 2:58Beg continually for his presence. The collect, let us pray. We beseech thee, oh, almighty God. Grant that as year by year, we devoutly keep thee sacred fasts. We may please thee both in body and mind.
- 3:23Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the prophet Hosea. Thus says the Lord God, come back Israel to the Lord thy God. It is sin that has caused thy overthrow.
- 3:54Come back to the Lord with this plea ready on your lips. Pardon all our sins and take the best we have in return. The praises we utter shall be our victims now. No longer will we find refuge in Assyrian help. Mount our men on horses from Egypt.
- 4:18No longer will we give the name of gods to the things our own hands have made. Thou art the friend of the friendless who trust in thee. I will bring healing to their crushed spirits. In free mercy, I will give them back my love. My vengeance has passed them by.
- 4:44I will be morning dew to make Israel grow as the lilies grow. Strike roots deep as the forest of Lebanon. Those branches shall spread. It shall become proud as the olive, fragrant as Lebanon cedar. All those who dwell under the protection of that name shall come back to me.
- 5:09Corn shall be theirs in plenty, and they will grow like one of their own vineyards, famed as the vintage of Lebanon itself. The false gods of Ephraim are forgotten, Mine to answer his prayer and tend him evergreen as a fir tree. From me all thy increase comes. All this the wise discern, the thoughtful understand. The Lord has shown us straight paths in which his loyal servants will walk while those who stray away from them stumble to their ruin.
- 5:58The gradual, relent, Lord, a little, and be gracious to thy servants. O Lord, thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time, one of the Pharisees invited him to a meal. So he went into the Pharisee's house and took his place at table.
- 6:33And there was then a sinful woman in the city who, hearing that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, brought a pot of ointment with her and took her place behind him at his feet, weeping. Then she began washing his feet with her tears and drying them with her hair, kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. His host, the Pharisee, saw it and thought to himself, if this man were a prophet, he would know who this woman is that is touching him and what kind of woman, a sinner. But Jesus answered him thus, Simon, I have a word for thy hearing. Tell it me, master, he said.
- 7:35There was a creditor who had two debtors. One owed him 500 pieces of silver. The other 50. They had no means of paying him and he gave them both their discharge. And now tell me which of them loves him the more.
- 7:58I suppose, Simon answered, that it is the one who had the greater debt discharged. And he said, thou hast judged rightly. Then he turned towards the woman and said to Simon, dost thou see this woman? I came into thy house, and thou gavest me no water for my feet. She has washed my feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair.
- 8:34Thou gavest me no kiss of greeting. She has never ceased to kiss my feet since I entered. Thou didst not pour oil on my head. She has anointed my feet and with ointment. And so I tell thee, if great sins have been forgiven her she has also greatly loved.
- 9:02He loves little who has little forgiven him. Then he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven. And his fellow guests thereupon thought to themselves, who is this? That he even forgives sins. But he told the woman, thy faith has saved thee.
- 9:32Go in peace. The offertory. Bless the Lord my soul, remembering all he has done for thee, how he restores thy youth as the eagle's plumage is restored. The secret. May the offering of our fasting, oh Lord, we beseech thee, be pleasing in thy sight.
- 10:04May it atone for our sins, make us worthy in thy favor, and bring us to thine everlasting promises through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, o holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise.
- 11:18Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
- 11:41The communion. Clear me of this reproach I bear as I was ever attentive to thy claims, o Lord. I have thought only of thy decrees. The post communion. Let us pray.
- 12:02We thank thee, oh almighty God, for the gifts we have received and beseech thee to grant us yet greater benefits through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Let us bless the Lord.
