- 0:00SPEAKER_00: You're listening to the I Align podcast with Flint Mitchell, where I provide stories, resources, and tools for ambitious builders who are ready to gain control over procrastination, overthinking, and distraction.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Welcome.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I used to scroll my life away playing video games and on social media, and now I spend 10 to 12 hours a day pursuing my dreams and building my own mission.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I visibly remember talking to my dad one time around Christmas time and looking at him, and I don't know if I said it out loud or if I just held it to myself in my head, but I looked at him and I was like, I wish I was moving faster.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: I wish I was more proud of myself.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: I don't know if I'm on the right track.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: And worse than all of that is I don't feel like I'm taking the actions that are required to show me.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I honestly feel, or I felt like in that moment, I honestly feel like I'm not doing enough.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Not to feel on track, but to trust myself.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: At the end of the day, my direction is a product of the actions that I take.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I am responsible for my life.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And I may not have made it per se in the sense that I haven't accomplished some of these very massive large goals that I have for myself, but I am absolutely actively making it.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I spend the vast majority of my time the way I actually genuinely want to.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: And I'll just shoot to you straight.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: That wouldn't have been true if I didn't overcome compulsive and avoidant behaviors like scrolling that helped me manage or numb my emotions, my worries, my anxieties, my insecurities, etc.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Like I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: If I had continued to allow those behaviors to dictate how I spent the vast majority of my free time, and if we're being honest, also my time at work, even if I wasn't actively scrolling, you know the experience where you were scrolling or you were avoiding, and then you get into focusing, but you're not actually focusing, you're thinking about other shit.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: If that is your life, if that was my life, I wouldn't be where I am right now.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't be so content, so fulfilled with how I spend my time, with the things that I'm learning, with the things that I'm developing, the people that I am working with, all these things.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: It would not have been possible.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: One thing I recognized early on in this journey to overcoming compulsive behaviors that I accumulated from childhood into my teens, into my 20s, that then included these kind of dopamine-seeking behaviors like scrolling or YouTube watching or all this kind of all this kind of stuff was at the end of my year from September to December and into January was one of the most important parts.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Not only because it is the piece of my year that I actually remember, when I look back on certain years, the vast majority of it is the way I was feeling when I ended the year.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So it's important to wrap up the year in a way that makes me proud, but it also sets the precedent for the next year, right?
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: And so September to December of this year is going to set up January to March of next year.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Behavior change doesn't happen overnight.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And the years where I allowed the end of my year, including the holidays, the chaotic holidays, the Halloween, into the Thanksgiving, into the Christmas and the New Year, into Valentine's Day, when I allowed that period to just go kind of stagnant, not actually change the behaviors.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Allow myself at lunch every day at work to just scroll away and then push my work later into the afternoon and just blow up entire ends to my work days because I'm scrolling some stupid video on YouTube or I'm looking at some girl that I'm interested in on Instagram or whatever the thing is.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: When I allowed that to happen in my past, say in my early 20s, when I allowed that to happen for months on end, not only did it ruin those years for me, really in my memory, it was heart-wrenching to go into December feeling so stagnant and so low.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Not because I was a bad person or I wasn't capable or competent, but because my actions over the course of the last couple months of the year showed me that I wasn't on the trajectory that I wanted to be on.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: And you're obviously not just going to switch on a pin drop.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: And so when I went into the next year, those behaviors were still there.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: And then it took me into spring and into summer to start getting control on them.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And then the next holiday seasons, I know it's like condensing a long time into a short phrase here.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: That is the reality, is these next couple months are incredibly important for setting up not just how you feel about this year, but how you go forward and how you start off the next year.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And there were a lot of times at the end of my teens and in my early 20s where my actions, if done for a long enough period of time, through my late 20s, into my early 30s and beyond, would have prevented me, precluded me from, I believe, building a life that I was genuinely fulfilled with.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Unless I had some crisis moment and some insane amount of work that happened later on.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: And that is why I take the end of my year so seriously.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Not to not have fun and not to enjoy the holidays and all this kind of stuff, but to make sure that I end each year acting in a way that makes me consistently proud because I know that is how not only I will remember this year and be proud of this year and have the best year I possibly can have up until this point, but also how I will put myself on the right step forward so that on January 1, there aren't New Year's resolutions where I'm like, oh, I'm gonna change this big thing.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: January 1 is about saying, I'm gonna continue this beautiful path that I'm on.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna continue doing these actions that I'm proud of, I'm gonna continue in this direction that I'm going.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And all of that starts right now.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: The end of September, it all starts right now.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: If you've been told your entire life that you're smart and you have potential, but you continue to see yourself not do what you said you would do again, and it's made you stop trusting in yourself or that you will ever achieve that potential, I want to help you.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Together, you and I will implement a core value-based system that will help you become decisive and focused.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: I want you to feel the relief from the weight on your shoulders because of the decreased noise in your head.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Strength each morning because you trust yourself to turn lost avoidant hours of your life into forward progress.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Peace when you no longer have to hide how you actually spend your time.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And pride in yourself when you close your eyes to go to sleep.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: If that's of interest to you, click the first link in the show notes, fill out the 30 second application, and grab a time on my calendar.
