- 0:27Hey everybody. Good morning from the porch.
- 0:30Yep, we're having to do it from the porch today.
- 0:32So OK, let's talk about disappointment.
- 0:37This is probably such a complicated subject for so many
- 0:40of us because I don't know about you, but I experienced
- 0:44disappointment on a regular basis and it happens.
- 0:48I mean, we're human beings. We get disappointed by things.
- 0:51We have these hidden expectations, or maybe they're
- 0:54not even hidden. Maybe you put them out there in
- 0:56the world and then there's a state of whatever happens comes
- 1:00in and you're disappointed because it didn't work out
- 1:04exactly the way you wanted it to.
- 1:06Or maybe there's a blatant disregard for it, which is
- 1:09actually a mix of you're not just disappointed, but you're
- 1:11kind of angry about it. And, and, and listen, this is
- 1:14real. We have to deal with this
- 1:16because in our lives, boy, I can tell you, it happens a lot for
- 1:21me. It happens in my personal world
- 1:23with the garden. You know, what am I growing?
- 1:26The disappointments of this past summer were really big for me
- 1:29with all the tomato disaster. As you know, we've talked about
- 1:32the tomato disasters and, you know, certain the flower garden
- 1:37did not do as well this year. And I just am, what is that?
- 1:41I got to figure that piece out. So I'm putting myself back
- 1:45through the flower school this year.
- 1:47I'm going to study like crazy all winter long, getting ready
- 1:50to open the gardens for the chickens to go in and RIP them
- 1:54apart with me this coming week because now it's finally
- 1:57starting to cool off a little bit so we can get in there and
- 2:00do some work. And the disappointment of it all
- 2:03will be reminding me all over again.
- 2:05So, but it's not just things like that.
- 2:08I mean, even in your day, let's say you have a coworker and
- 2:10you're working on something together and they don't finish
- 2:12in time, which causes you to be late, which links us back to
- 2:16feeling like we're in fifth grade.
- 2:17And we've been, you know, paired up with that one person in the
- 2:21class that no one wants to get paired up with because they know
- 2:23that person is not going to pull their weight in the group.
- 2:26Boy, if that doesn't remind me of my childhood, I'll tell you
- 2:30that That is a sore point for me.
- 2:32And it was always such a big disappointment because you want
- 2:35that good grade. You want that outcome, whatever
- 2:38it might be. And if you're a human and you
- 2:41have a relationship with another human of any kind on a personal
- 2:45level, disappointment will show up.
- 2:48It will happen. They will say something, they
- 2:50will do something. Why?
- 2:53Because we're human, because we're not perfect.
- 2:56And that's that is OK. We have to 1st get in our head
- 3:01that this happens. There is no such thing as
- 3:04perfection at all anywhere. It doesn't matter it perfection
- 3:09is non existent. And we can use the word we can
- 3:13say perfect or that's that his sheer perfection.
- 3:16But that is only through the filter that we see with that one
- 3:20filter is so important to us. So remember, that's the first
- 3:24aspect of this when you're in disappointment.
- 3:29It's that filter, it's that piece that you're looking
- 3:32through that says it didn't hit my, my need, my outcome, my
- 3:37unexplained or unidentified. But you know, expectation
- 3:43version of perfection. That's what's happening firstly.
- 3:46Then you come back to, OK, well, how do I handle it now?
- 3:49What do I do? So for me, a big piece of what
- 3:54helps me is to be able to talk about it with the person that
- 3:57disappointed me or with the situation, explain myself in the
- 4:03situation that that helps me personally, but it doesn't
- 4:07always help. Like if I use my husband as an
- 4:09example, if I'm explaining myself to him, it doesn't help
- 4:12him. He doesn't care about that
- 4:14stuff. So some might say, well, that's
- 4:16inconsiderate and it might be inconsiderate, but what are we
- 4:20talking about here? We're talking about how we get
- 4:22through it. So if I want to talk about it, I
- 4:25need to do that in a neutral space.
- 4:28So sometimes it's just great to write it all on paper so you get
- 4:32it out of your head. That is a very useful tool for
- 4:34me. Sometimes I like to record
- 4:36myself going on a rant and then I can go back and listen to it
- 4:39and say, jeez, does that sound unreasonable?
- 4:41And you all have that because you can do it right in your
- 4:43phone on voice memos and you can, you can do it easily.
- 4:50It really does help to listen back to yourself.
- 4:52And the biggest, biggest piece of all of this is saying, OK,
- 4:55how do I, once I get it all out in some way, shape or form,
- 4:59whether the person is listening, whether I've just written it
- 5:01down, whether I've recorded it, you can even videotape yourself
- 5:04if you need to. Then you have to go back and
- 5:06say, OK, how am I going to move forward?
- 5:08What is my strategy to move forward?
- 5:11You have to say it's not about letting the disappointment go.
- 5:15It's about moving forward. First you can let it go.
- 5:20There's a process of this. It partly let's go when you just
- 5:24get it out of your head and the next piece is knowing you're
- 5:27moving forward. And then it, it's almost magical
- 5:31sometimes where it just feels like it let go.
- 5:34Now, if it doesn't let go at that point and you still feel
- 5:37that frustration, you know, 24 hours, 48 hours, and some things
- 5:41are big. Believe me, some people
- 5:43disappoint us in big ways and we hang on to it for a long time.
- 5:46And if that's what's happening, that's OK.
- 5:48Keep checking in with yourself and saying, am I still moving
- 5:51forward? Because the most important thing
- 5:53is that you don't stay stuck and in analysis paralysis.
- 5:57You just keep moving forward. And then eventually, I promise
- 6:01you will be able to let it go. And it might take sometimes it
- 6:04takes a really long time, but you will.
- 6:07It will happen as long as you keep moving forward.
- 6:11All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 6:13will see you tomorrow. Bye.
