- 0:37SPEAKER_01: I'm joined by my venerable friends, KG and Matt.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: Uh gentlemen, how are you this week?
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: I'm good.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: I'm good.
- 0:44SPEAKER_05: I'm um just you know excited.
- 0:47SPEAKER_05: Um preseason kicked off.
- 0:50SPEAKER_05: We've got some games going on.
- 0:51SPEAKER_05: It feels like the season's almost here, so yeah, it's it's it's a good time.
- 0:57SPEAKER_05: So uh I am at a good place.
- 0:59SPEAKER_05: I haven't watched as much as I'd like, but I'm kind of saving myself for the real deal.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: But all as well.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: Nothing like saving yourself for the real deal, Kerry.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: And as real deals go, you are that.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Very good.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Very good.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Well, I I uh I'm I'm in the camp of it's just a preseason game, it doesn't matter, after uh uh Packers not doing very well against the Steelers, and uh there's a few bright spots that came out of it, I guess.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Um I think your Cowboys did well against the Seahawks, but there weren't too many starting quarterbacks floating around uh over the course of the last weekend.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: But uh we'll see how we go.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: See how we go again next week.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: I could be in, we're all in again.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Before we get on with our preview of the seasons for the NFC South and North, Matt, it's news time.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Now it's time for the latest in NFL news.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Matt, what's been happening?
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: Thank you, Peter.
- 1:57SPEAKER_04: It's actually a short week last week because we recorded late.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: So this is the news roundup for August the 14th to August the 19th, 2026.
- 2:07SPEAKER_04: We'll start off with the Chiefs.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: Eric Bienname has described his wife Mia, who was recently um shot uh as a soldier and explained the fact that her can the fact that her condition is improving is the reason he's made such a quick return to Chiefs' practices this week.
- 2:25SPEAKER_04: As you gentlemen have pointed out, preseason uh week one kicked off, games between the 13th and the 17th.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: We had the first live look at rookies and new faces across the league headline by the Hall of Fame game, which Hugh Gents touched on last week.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: Notable early early performances and roster battles are now shaping up ahead of the week two preseason games.
- 2:47SPEAKER_04: Continuing a theme from last week's news of training camp scuffles.
- 2:51SPEAKER_04: Kerry, this is one for you.
- 2:53SPEAKER_04: The Cowboys and Saints joint practice on Tuesday produced six separate physical altercations between the players.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: And it's been reported to have been one of the most heated camp practices of the summer.
- 3:08SPEAKER_04: This comes out on the heels of the Kirk Cousins Max Crosby scuffle we talked about last week at the Raiders camp.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: Notable injuries for the week.
- 3:17SPEAKER_04: Jets running back Brees Hall left Monday's practice with the groin strain.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed that he'll miss two to three weeks.
- 3:25SPEAKER_04: Um, that kind of timeline will have him back for the September the 13th opener versus Tennessee.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: Um Saints running back Alvin Kamara left a joint practice with Dallas.
- 3:35SPEAKER_04: Maybe he was one of the casualties of the scuffle, um, early with an apparent knee issue.
- 3:41SPEAKER_04: Uh early signs suggest he avoided a serious injury but will likely miss the rest of preseason.
- 3:46SPEAKER_04: Vikings safety, Jamal Adams, has been placed on season end in IR after tearing his right quad in a week one preseason game.
- 3:55SPEAKER_04: Saints rookie wide receiver Jordan Tyson, who is a first-round pick, is expected to miss about two months with a hamstring injury sustained in camp.
- 4:05SPEAKER_04: Um head coach of the Panthers, Dave Canales, described an injury to running back Chubb Hubbard as a legit hamstring injury, and he is now week to week.
- 4:18SPEAKER_04: Cardinals guard Chase Bisontis suffered a serious looking knee injury in Tampa's preseason went over the Raiders.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: Broncos quarterback Bo Nick sat out the preseason opener versus Atlanta as a planned rest decision.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: We obviously know he's been recovering from a really bad ankle injury suffered in the offseason.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: Um, head coach Dawn Payton says he'll play the final two preseason games.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: And Chargers center Tyler Biadas was carted off the field only yesterday.
- 4:48SPEAKER_04: So this is kind of breaking news, clutching an injured leg.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: The Chargers signed him to a three-year,$30 million contract this offseason after he has spent the last two years with the commanders.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: In roster moves, the Giants have signed running back Najee Harris to a one-year deal.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: Um, he's now fully healthy after tearing his Achilles with the Chargers last season in a corresponding move to make room on the roster.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, the Giants released wide receiver Juju Smith Schuster.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: The Cowboys have signed free agent Von Miller to a one-year deal.
- 5:25SPEAKER_04: Um I believe Von Miller has got the highest number of sacks for active players.
- 5:33SPEAKER_04: So um Jerry's um on a youth crusade, yeah, clearly.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: Um one-year deal.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: He practiced with the team for the first time on Tuesday.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: Um Giants wide receiver Malik Neighbours cleared a major recovery checkpoint, participating in full speed 11 on 11 and 7 on seven drills for the first time since his ACL tear last year.
- 5:56SPEAKER_04: The Colts have signed six-time pro bowler Keenan Allen to a one-year$8.32 million contract to bolster their receiving court.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: Allen reunites with Colts head coach Shane Steichen, with whom he's previously worked for seven years at the Chargers.
- 6:15SPEAKER_04: And three-time Pro Bowl Pro Bowl Edge Russia Zadarius Smith is um returning from retirement to join the Atlanta Falcons on a one-year terms undisclosed deal.
- 6:28SPEAKER_04: Smith turned 34 in September, having played five games with the Eagles last season, collecting 1.5 sacks and three quarterback hits before he abruptly retired.
- 6:39SPEAKER_04: However, we know the Falcons have been on Struggle Street with their defensive lineman, Jalen Walker, the number 15 pick in last year's draft, was lost for this season due to a torn ACL.
- 6:49SPEAKER_04: And James Pierce, the number 26 pick a year ago, has been suspended eight games by the NFL under the league's personal conduct policy.
- 6:59SPEAKER_04: And finally, also notable news, Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza said he was far from meeting his own standard in his NFL preseason debut, which was a loss to Arizona.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: He is expected to challenge Kirk Cousins for the starting job, although I think we all believe it's Kirk's, uh at least for the first half of the season.
- 7:22SPEAKER_04: And old man Rob Gronkowski will be inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame on November the 7th.
- 7:29SPEAKER_04: That, gentlemen, is your news roundup.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Very good.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: First of all, you you could have spent more time talking about Chuba Hubbard.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: What a great name.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: What a great name.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Um and and I watched the Raiders preseason game.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: He looked pretty good.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: He looked pretty good, but uh uh I could tell you who looked even better, Ty Simpson.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Oh my word.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: Um that's a great pick from the Rams.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, was he good in their game?
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: Did uh Sean Payton smile?
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: I doubt it.
- 8:04SPEAKER_04: I doubt it.
- 8:05SPEAKER_04: But sorry, um Mc it's it it's McVeigh, isn't it?
- 8:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 8:10SPEAKER_04: Yes, make your pardon Peyton's the uh another team.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: So yeah, did he he he smile then after he uh was forced to pick that highly uh so the stats were so ridiculous, something like twenty-one or twenty-five he threw or something like that.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: So again, it's only preseason, as you'll hear me saying, until the Packers win a game.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: But um that's what you want from your backup quarterback.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it it looked to me if Stafford has to you know sit down for a couple of games, they're not gonna miss too much of a beat, but we'll we'll see.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: We'll probably uh have a bit more of a round up next week when we talk predictions for the upcoming year and maybe through the the preseason games that are going on over this weekend.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Uh but for now, Matt, thanks for that.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: We're gonna dive right in to our preview, and we're gonna start in the NFC South.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: And we're better to start than with the New Orleans Saints.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Uh Saints need a prayer every now and then, don't we?
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Hands up, if you could tell me who the head coach of the New Orleans Saints is, and even better, who is their quarterback?
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: Mike Dick and Drew Brees.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I gotta say, and if you're not saying Drew Brees, then then you're ahead of me.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Um so Caleb Moore is in his second season as the Saints head coach.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: I think they are in the definition of a rebuilding season.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: I am not going to go down the lines of Cleveland or uh the Cardinals as I have done.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: I don't think they're that bad off.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Um, but they certainly will be rebuilding from their 6-11 season last year.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Tyler Shaw Show is uh is their quarterback, probably uh roughly a mid-tier quarterback, if that, mainly because I had to look him up.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty sure many people had to look him up, so he could surprise a few people this year, who knows?
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Um is he going to be their long-term answer of quarterback?
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: They've struggled to replace uh Drew Brees, uh, and that's fully understandable.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: He was the the shining light for them for many, many years.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: So this is his second season.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: In the running backs, they do have Travis Etienne Jr., who is a very solid running back, will get them a lot of yards, will keep them in games where needed, and hopefully free up some time for the for them to establish a passing game.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Um they also have uh Alvin Camara, uh but his role has changed uh since the arrival of Etienne.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Um and um and not sure this was in the news, but he did suffer a knee injury in the joint game with Dallas the other day.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: So uh what will what his role will be going in the season, who knows?
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: But he's 31 now.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Uh if I asked you to name a wide receiver, you probably couldn't name any, and neither can I, so you won't hear any names coming at me from their wide receiver depth.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: The O-line was poor last year.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: They they led in way too many sacks.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Uh there's no sign of improvement in that this year.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: Uh so I'm not sure where they drafted, how they drafted, or what they drafted.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: And uh there's like to be a middle of the pack defense, I think, coming from uh New Orleans this year.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: They'll they'll do well some days, they'll ship points a lot.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: I would think if you're playing them, especially if you're a Dallas, the Packers, or uh uh even a Bears, where you know predominantly you like to get the passing game, go deep, I think you'll have a lot of joy against the Saints this year.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: I think wholly if they come out of this year with seven or eight wins, I think they'll be doing well.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: They're a young team.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: I don't think this I think this is the first year that Green Bay cannot say they're the youngest team in the NFL.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Uh the Saints will be pushing them from that.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: They're a very young team, they're gonna learn a lot.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: They might be learning the hard way.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: Where do I see them finishing?
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Probably a six and eleven again.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Um mainly this isn't a strong division.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: I can see them picking up three wins in this division, at least.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: Um, because the Falcons are in it and we'll come on to them later.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: But yeah, uh if I had to put my nail on it on the head, I would say it's uh six and eleven for the Saints this year.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Hope and a prayer.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: If they're really, really unlucky and their schedule's not great, um maybe only four and thirteen.
- 12:28SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: Um some learned observers um have suggested that the Saints have the second easiest schedule based on opponent win projections.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: Um and given they had a late season surge last year, um could be a dark horse to win the division, Pete.
- 12:52SPEAKER_04: So it'd be interesting to see if that happens or whether your um more conservative projections um uh ring true.
- 13:02SPEAKER_04: So um yeah, um the Athletic has them down for a nine and eight record based on their second easier schedule.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: And what do they know?
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: Um what do they know?
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: We'll see who's proven wrong at the end, right?
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: And it will almost certainly be me.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: I I just think these are I mean, we've talked about the Browns and the Cardinals rebuilding.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Their rebuilding has taken them years and years and years and years.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: I'm hoping the Saints don't fall into that.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: When you lose a Drew Brees, then you you you lose a main weapon and they hadn't paid enough attention to like the Ramsar in replacing their star quarterback, like Green Bay have done in the past.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I think it's it's it's gonna be a tough year, but if they can come out six, I can't see them getting nine games.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: I I just can't.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: I I don't think they'll be the worst team, but they're not gonna be the best, not in this division.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: They started last season one and eight and finished in five and four.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: So really a tail of two halves, if you like.
- 14:04SPEAKER_04: But um one and eight's a hard start to come back from, right?
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Oh immensely, immensely.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: So uh let's move on to one of the teams I think that should be vibe for the top of that division.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about the Buccaneers.
- 14:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the Buccaneers finished last season eight and nine, which was good for second in the NFC South, um, but they did miss the playoffs.
- 14:31SPEAKER_04: Um the general manager's Jason liked Todd Bowles as their head coach.
- 14:36SPEAKER_04: He's retained for a fifth year.
- 14:39SPEAKER_04: Um Bowles is in some circles seen as being on the hot seat after the buck streak of four straight NFC South titles and five straight playoff berths ended last season.
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: Um they've had a major overhaul at the coordinator level.
- 14:57SPEAKER_04: Um they hired Zach Robinson from the Falcons as offensive coordinator.
- 15:03SPEAKER_04: Danny Smith has come in as the new special teams coordinator, and multiple new position coaches have um been hired on both sides of the ball.
- 15:11SPEAKER_04: Their defense ranked 21st in points allowed last season, produced its lowest sack total in bowls um five years as head coach.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: Um so that's been a major offseason focus for them.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: Quarterback Baker Mayfield's contract extension, which um we discussed in a previous episode.
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: Um uh the deadline at the start of camp passed without a deal.
- 15:38SPEAKER_04: The Bucks did restructure to add 30 million in 2026 guarantees, but Mayfield says he's now tabling talks until after the season, and there's clearly some bad blood there and a situation to monitor.
- 15:51SPEAKER_04: Um expanding on that, we've also talked about defensive tackle Vita Vaia.
- 15:56SPEAKER_04: He's requested a trade after stalled extension talks.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: Tamp has publicly said it won't move him despite um outside interest from other teams.
- 16:05SPEAKER_04: In the draft, um, notable picks were Ruben Bain, junior and edge rusher from Miami with the number 15 overall pick.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: It's considered a little bit of a surprise deal, um, but he's the first edge rusher in team history to wear the number three.
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: A little bit of useless trivia for you this season.
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: Josiah Trotter, uh linebacker from Missouri, was picked in round two.
- 16:29SPEAKER_04: Ted Hurst, a wide receiver from Georgia State in round three.
- 16:32SPEAKER_04: He's seen as having some high upside um as a size and speed prospect, um, and is um earmarked as one of the class's most intriguing day two picks.
- 16:43SPEAKER_04: So let's keep an eye on Ted Hurst.
- 16:46SPEAKER_04: Um, Keonta scot a corner in round four, fell to Tampera, pick 116, and finally in round five, they picked up Billy Shrouth, a guard from Notre Dame.
- 16:57SPEAKER_04: In free agency, um they've really focused on defense.
- 17:02SPEAKER_04: Alex Anzalone came in at linebacker, two-year deal from Detroit.
- 17:07SPEAKER_04: Um Al Qadim Mohammed, an edge rusher, signed a one-year, six million dollar free agency contract.
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: Aeshawn Robinson, a defensive tackle, came in, and the uh Buccaneers have planned to pair in with Vavita via Kenneth Gainwell, a running back, came in from the Steelers, as did Miles Killebrew, a safety.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: So um other storylines include losing franchise icon Mike Evans to the 49ers.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: Pete we talked about this in one of our episodes last season.
- 17:37SPEAKER_04: Um that ended a 12-year run in Tampa.
- 17:40SPEAKER_04: Emika Eggbuka and Jalen McMillan now lead the wide receiving uh core.
- 17:46SPEAKER_04: The Vita via trade drama um is very much likely to linger on into the season.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: Um, and as we said, Bowles is hot um hot seat is one to watch.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: Um the uh regular season schedule sees them uh have a buy in week 10, uh nine home games, a call up fellas.
- 18:08SPEAKER_04: I've got them down for a seven and ten record.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Whoa.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Whoa, so so we're basically saying Atlanta might get in the playoffs because everyone else is shit, right?
- 18:19SPEAKER_04: This feels to me like a team of very unhappy key players.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: That doesn't matter.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Have they?
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:30SPEAKER_04: Well he's probably the the key one.
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: But um unhappy important players doesn't normally translate into success.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: So I'm sticking my neck out a bit.
- 18:40SPEAKER_04: Um but yeah, seven and ten.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, you're alright, mate.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: That's two weeks in a row you've done that.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: That's uh well let let's let's see.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Uh I I I I I personally probably think nine and eight for uh just a turnaround of of last year, but uh you forget how poor this division is, you're gonna look at the the kind of the NFC North and and the others where you're gonna finish third getting eleven and six, and you can have someone sneaking the playoffs with an eight and nine record top in their division.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: So it's uh yeah, there'll be an interesting debate debate later on, but uh as we drive through the mediocrity then, um let's let's look towards the Panthers.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Gary.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: I'm just getting up to speed on the Panthers, and look, it is gonna be a bit of that mediocrity, I would say.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: Look, they squeaked in um and um had a playoff berth last year at eight and nine, and in most divisions that would be um not good enough, but um for them it was just right.
- 19:41SPEAKER_05: I I don't think they've made huge moves over the uh offseason.
- 19:46SPEAKER_05: They signed a big one uh from the Eagles, Jalen Phillips.
- 19:52SPEAKER_05: I'm not familiar with Jalen, but um he was worth 120 million, so I think he must be uh a good investment for them.
- 20:02SPEAKER_05: Um they also signed uh another player, Devin Lloyd, uh a linebacker uh in the offseason uh in free agency, and then uh one of the other big signings was um quarterback um Kenny Pickens uh on a 7.5 million uh dollar deal.
- 20:23SPEAKER_05: Uh and and really to just be a backup to um Andy Dalton, but um this was to basically give good competition at that position.
- 20:34SPEAKER_05: If I look down at um other free agency and signings, we've got uh left tackle uh Rasheed Walker from free agency, offensive tackle Monroe Feelings uh from Georgia was an the 19th overall pick.
- 20:51SPEAKER_05: And it looks like if I just kind of scroll through the big things that they've done, it it is mostly on the offensive side of the ball.
- 20:58SPEAKER_05: And I am just looking, looking, and there's not as much uh on the defensive side at all.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: Look, as far as my prediction, I don't really have a huge feeling about um uh them and what they'll do.
- 21:15SPEAKER_05: I actually am going to put them about in the same ranks as um uh previous years, um, and that is the middle of the road.
- 21:26SPEAKER_05: And I would say between uh this is a tough one.
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go nine and eight is my prediction for um them for the year.
- 21:36SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 21:38SPEAKER_05: But so division winners is what you're saying here.
- 21:41SPEAKER_05: Yes, that's right.
- 21:42SPEAKER_05: I I I I I see them kind of holding steady and um yeah, just maybe squeaking by just a little bit better than they did last year.
- 21:51SPEAKER_05: And and that's where I'll sit because I just don't um have a a huge feeling about them, but it looks like they've made some at least respectable moves to keep themselves.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: In a good position.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: It's an odd one when you're any one of these teams, right?
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: So I'll I'll talk about Atlanta very shortly, but um are you happy just making the playoffs?
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: You can be mediocre and still be in the playoffs every year.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: And and uh you know, most fans, some fans are just happy making the playoffs.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, there are some idiotic fans who say if we don't win the Super Bowl, you've failed your season.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: But that's uh that's just some idiotic people I might interact with on Twitter rather than anything else, right?
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: But uh it it it's difficult to see how any of these teams can can be more than one and done once they get into the playoffs.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: And and you are you have got to win the division almost because the wild card numbers just aren't there.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: So we'll go to another rebuilding team then um as we move on from the Panthers.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: Um we'll talk about the Falcons.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: So the Falcons have absolute uh eight and nine last year, and they had an absolute clear out.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, everybody went.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: And uh so new general manager, uh new uh head coach, so they hired Kevin Stefansky, um uh new general manager in Ian Cunningham, and a new president of football operations, Matt Ryan.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: So they've had a right clean out of the whole front office, decided they had enough about not making the playoffs, they were gonna do something about it, get rid of what they got, empty it all out, and then went and signed Tua.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: And it just didn't add up to me uh as a as a team that had gone all in on Michael Penix almost to uh to go and sign Tua from from Miami or or trade with Miami for Tua didn't make a huge amount of sense.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: To me, they're now back on the the the quarterback merry-go round.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: If they're not careful, they're gonna end up as the you know NFC South's version of the Cleveland Browns.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: Um probably not in terms of wins or as in dreadful play, but just not knowing who their quarterback is.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Uh popular stats have it at the minute that Tua will start the season, but it's about 60-40 that it will either be him or Penix.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: And if Penix doesn't start the season, you've got to be thinking he'll be wanting to look elsewhere to uh try and get some game time.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: Uh and I don't know how long his contract is for, but he'll he'll probably be looking for a trade, I would imagine.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: Uh I guess it's gonna be another one of those preseason games.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Who plays better in preseason?
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: They're gonna give them both some time and see where we go.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: Uh look, Stefansky is preseason may actually matter for them.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: I I think that for the brands, um for for the Fulgans, uh, for all of these people who are very dubious on who their quarterback's gonna be.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it it's interesting, and and maybe we should come on to it, you know, what's going on in preseason.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: You know, Jordan Love started for the Packers, and we'll come back on to them in a minute.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: Once they have you know one drive and that was it, we won't see him again until game one, no.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: So what's the value of preseason?
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Anyway, let's get let's get back to the Falcons, let's do them some uh uh kind of some kind of service.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: So uh they do have dynamic running back Bijan Robinson.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: He will be the focal point of their offense.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, Stavansky is a good smash front mouth smash em up type coach, so you you need a good strong running back for that.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: So so you know they've they've got some good stuff going for them there.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Um in terms of wide receivers, they've got Drake London and and Zachariah Branch, um uh who's who's tagged to be one of the breakout wide receivers in the NFC.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: So we can't look at them.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: He's uh he was a rookie and one of most Atlanta's most impressive players throughout the training camp.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: So the question is, can he translate that into games?
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Uh they've got Carl Pitts at tight end, he's a very, very good tight end.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: He's probably one of the top five tight ends, I would think, in in all of the NFL.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Their offensive line is reasonably strong.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: Um they're gonna have to protect whichever quarterback steps in um because they've got to buy him time.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Uh the defense, though, they haven't really done a lot to build up their defense.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And again, they're gonna be a team that ships a lot of points, so they can't score many points.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: They're gonna lose a lot of games.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Um, can they generate enough pass rush?
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: Can they threaten opposing quarterbacks?
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: Uh uh it's hard to see.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: They haven't really strengthened in in those places.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: Um, but of course, if they can, if they can get pressure on quarterbacks, I think there's an opportunity there for them to win some games.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: Again, the mediocrity of this division is probably shown by two things.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: One is the way we've been talking and the short amount of time we've done on a preview for them.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: There is not a lot into this as well.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: What's their chances of winning a Super Bowl?
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Zero, I would say.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: I did that as a there, but what's their chances of winning this division?
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: I think quite high.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: I think, looking at their schedule, they could go nine and eight.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Depending, and I am going to caveat that.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Actually, I'm going to put my mat hat on and caveat that.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Depending if they make a decision on who their best quarterback is.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: If they're going to rotate them throughout the season, uh that that nine and eight could easily be six and eleven.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 27:26SPEAKER_04: Signing to a made so little sense to me.
- 27:30SPEAKER_04: And his appennix has got a very poor injury record, but to his isn't much better.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Um the king of concussions, right?
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: But having said that, look, Stefansk is a head coach who likes to lean on a running game.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: I think you're right, Pete Robinson's one of the best.
- 27:47SPEAKER_04: They have got a good offensive line.
- 27:49SPEAKER_04: Carl Pitts is a weapon, Drake London's a weapon.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: Um, I just think they are going to suffer from the loss of those past rushes that we've just talked about in the uh news roundup.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: And obviously some old boys coming out of retirement to give him a hand.
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: So um I think they'll score points, but they will also ship a lot of points as well.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: Very good.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: Very good.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: Let's let's get out of this crappy division, eh, shall we?
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: Please.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Before we move on, that has to be probably the worst pre-division we've had to preview.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: There's nothing positive really come out of that.
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: What were the combined predicted uh records of the four teams, Pete?
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: You you were nine, eight and nine, weren't you?
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: Not nine and eight for the Falcons and six and eleven for the Saints.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: And I was seven, seven and ten, I think, for the Buccaneers.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: So Yeah, you've got to the only teams they're gonna beat is each other, right?
- 28:50SPEAKER_04: And um the LA Rams are gonna feast on a very well, they're probably not even are they, because even the division winners are gonna end up getting bounced before they face one of the powerhouse teams, aren't they?
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: So yeah, it's not good.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: They'll be probably be playing a wildcard team that's got a better record than them, right?
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: But they'll have a home game because they're division winners.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: That's about it.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: That's all you can say.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Oh so whilst we're whilst we've swum through the seas of mediocrity, let's go to probably the second toughest division in the NFC, the NFC North.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, this is gonna be tough because I'm gonna do my best to hold my tongue as as Kerry talks about the Vikings and and the Lions and when Matt talks about the Bears.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: But uh where should we start?
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Should we go in the reverse order of the winners from last?
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: No, because that'll have Kerry going twice.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: So I'll tell you what, Kerry, kickers off.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Your choice, dealers' choice, uh Vikings or the Lions.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: I don't care which one.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Dealer's choice who you can.
- 29:53SPEAKER_05: I'll go Vikings because they're the top of my list, so that'll just give me started and and go down.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: And that's the only list they'll be top of this year, I'll tell you that.
- 30:04SPEAKER_05: Look, I think they are gonna have a a a tough go this year.
- 30:08SPEAKER_05: Um last year, nine and eight, just missed the playoffs.
- 30:12SPEAKER_05: Um they had a uh a bit of a win streak at the end of the the season, so there's some analysts who are pretty high on them actually.
- 30:21SPEAKER_05: But um I uh personally just looking through it, I I don't see it as much.
- 30:27SPEAKER_05: They did have a big headline signing.
- 30:30SPEAKER_05: Um so Kevin O'Connell is the um coach, uh, been around for I think six seasons, don't quote me on that, but it's somewhere around there, and um has um gone after another quarterback, uh Kyler Murray.
- 30:46SPEAKER_05: And that was um huge.
- 30:49SPEAKER_05: Um Kyler Murray is um you know seasoned, but certainly not a um, I would call a winning um quarterback.
- 31:00SPEAKER_05: Um, but um, you know, um if you look at the record, he's one of only 20 players with um 120 um yards plus passing TDs and 30 plus rushing uh TDs.
- 31:15SPEAKER_05: So mobile quarterback, yes, but overall record about 38, 48, and one with the Cardinals.
- 31:24SPEAKER_05: So not super impressive.
- 31:26SPEAKER_05: Uh they did get him for steal, I think$1.3 million is what I um had read.
- 31:35SPEAKER_05: And you would think, oh, well, how did they do that?
- 31:38SPEAKER_05: It's because the Arizona Cardinals still owe him$36.8 million for the season.
- 31:47SPEAKER_05: So he's still doing all right at uh$1.3 million.
- 31:51SPEAKER_05: Um otherwise, um, not a whole bunch of you know huge moves um in the ranks.
- 31:59SPEAKER_05: They really just kind of did a uh a whole steady.
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: Uh they lost a couple of key players and uh they signed uh wide receiver uh Juwan Jennings, uh linebacker Eric Um Wilson in free agency.
- 32:14SPEAKER_05: Also um drafted a linebacker uh Jake Um Goldie uh and um a few other minor moves.
- 32:24SPEAKER_05: Look, if I were to give a uh a look at what I think they will do for the year, I think uh it's funny because uh we say this is one of the better um divisions, uh, and I I kind of agree, and I just don't think they're gonna do as well as some of the others in the division.
- 32:45SPEAKER_05: So I've got them at nine and eight.
- 32:48SPEAKER_05: Um so similar um but uh different uh in that I think they are actually ultimately uh a better team than that, but I think they're just gonna um go through a little bit of growing pains, and there's just too many other play um players in the division who actually have a strong team.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: So I'm I'm putting them in the middle of the pack.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah that would that I think that would have in the bottom of the pack, but that's uh I I I was stunned.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Not not only did they sign Tyler Murray, but they named him the starting quarterback.
- 33:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: So completely shoved out the JJ McCarthy.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: Is it J it's not JJ McCarthy, is it JJ?
- 33:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, JJ.
- 33:29SPEAKER_05: Yep, that's it.
- 33:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:31SPEAKER_05: Just gone.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Too much baseball on behind about McCarthy's and JJ's at the minute.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: So so uh and and he yeah, he suffered last year, he had got injuries and and things like that.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: But man alive, you've got to give some of these guys a chance.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: This guy played five games for Arizona last year and then had a foot injury.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: So yeah, he may be fresh, stuff like that.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: He's not young, he might be mobile, but he's not young.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: Um I I I I could be made to eat my words after you know week week one, game one, week one, uh, because they opened up against the Packers.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: But man, when are these guys in Minnesota gonna give quarterbacks a chance?
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: Well, they got rid of cousins, didn't they?
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: They got rid of uh Sam Darnold.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: Look at him.
- 34:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable.
- 34:22SPEAKER_04: They ranked 29th in passing yards per game last season.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: The Vikings 30th in quarterback rating, 32nd in turnovers.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Um and they brought isn't that because they got rid of the best quarterback in the league last year and just gave him away to the the Seahawks.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: And you know, J.J.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: McCarthy was injured for he missed five or six games last year.
- 34:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they spent the number ten pick in the 2024 draft on McCarthy, and they've brought Murray in this year on a one-year deal.
- 34:56SPEAKER_04: So it's just puzzling to me um what they're thinking there.
- 35:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um Roger's gonna be.
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: But you know, anyway.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, look, I know there's a few interceptions and a few other things, and and he's a passionate young man, but man alive, at some point you've got to let these guys go.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: You know, Matt, you made a good point earlier about Michael Penix being quite injury pro, right?
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: So you've got to have some level of make sure you've got some level of backup there.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: To go and sign the guy on a one-year contract and then name him as starter.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: Well what's JJ McCarthy thinking now?
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: Do you actually want me here?
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: What am I here for?
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, what's gonna happen next year?
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Are you got his cook cousins coming back?
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: Joe Flacco.
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: Where do you stop?
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: Aaron Rodgers Aaron Rogers is gonna saddle up the horse and ride on into Minnesota.
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: Minnesota doesn't have much of a rushing game, and I think Murray will help them in that area.
- 35:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:55SPEAKER_04: And remember they've got Justin Jefferson, so um, you know, if if quarterbacks can get JJ the ball, you know, we know he's capable of magic.
- 36:06SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, I think this is a team in a really interesting position, and it could go one, you know, it could go both ways, really, couldn't it?
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: They you know they could be worse than last year, or they could markedly improve.
- 36:20SPEAKER_04: Um, and they have a they have a uh third place schedule, I believe.
- 36:25SPEAKER_04: Didn't the Lions tank and get the last place schedule in in the year?
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: They missed it.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: I think you're fine and eight.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: Actually, the Packers, the Lions and the Vikings all finished on nine and eight.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, third place, fourth place schedule, yeah.
- 36:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's have a quick look.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: Packers were nine and eight in twenty twenty-five.
- 36:46SPEAKER_04: Sorry, Vikings were nine and eight.
- 36:48SPEAKER_04: The pack they finished with a better record than you, Pete.
- 36:50SPEAKER_04: You were nine, seven, and what?
- 36:51SPEAKER_04: Oh no, you were two.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we had that lovely draw against nine, seven, and one, wasn't it?
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: Uh we had that lovely draw against uh Dallas that got us into the into the playoffs.
- 36:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Bears were eleven and six and Lions were um nine and eight.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, tough league.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, tough league.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: Alright, well uh perhaps I'll go.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Perhaps I'll talk about the Packers.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: Um and I'll try not to take up too much time.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: I I I've I've with the Packers, I've gone from optimistic to pessimistic to oh my god, this is gonna be a tough year.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Um to hey, if we can get to to week three, and I'll be three and oh, because uh our week three uh games against the Jets, then I'll be happy because last year we went two and oh and then lost to the Browns.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: Um so I could see us doing exactly the same thing and losing to the Jets.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: Um obviously Matt LaFleur is back, Jordan Love is back.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: Uh uh and and that's a strong thing.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: I know there's a lot of people um who are down on Matt LaFleur, but he's something like the third most winningest coach currently in the NFL.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: So there is something in that, but I do think this is a make or break year for him.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: If the Packers don't make the playoffs or they're one and done in the playoffs again, or even if they only turn up as as the number six seed for the umpteenth time, it's gonna if it doesn't improve, I think people start to to question whether they've got a coach who can take them any further than they are today.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: The talent's there, the youth is there, the ability is there.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: Um it's whether he can find his way to coach past Q4 victories and not turn them into defeats like he did a number of times last year.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: He's his play calling gets very conservative, they're handing the ball back way too many times in the fourth quarter and not scoring points and and getting overturned too many times, and I think that has to be fixed, uh uh as well does the defence when it comes to the fourth quarter.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: I think we leaked more points in the fourth quarter than many teams did last year.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: Um running back, that's gonna be dodgy.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: No one knows what's going on with Josh Jacobs at the minute.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: Uh there is no evidence being brought forward.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: The charges look like they've been withdrawn, and so where they're all sweating on a decision from the NFL on what they want to do about this.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: Um positive uh in the preseason game, and I say, what is the point of preseason?
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: Uh Marshawn Lloyd uh actually showed some very dynamic moves running against the Pittsburgh defense, uh doing exactly what you'd expect Jacobs to do, getting short yardage, um working on on both sides of the uh receiving and rushing, so it was good to see um from all quarterbacks that he was in there with.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: So that was really really positive.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: Uh they've trimmed down their wide receivers.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: Dontavian Wicks has gone, Romeo Dobbs has gone.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: Um I think that's gonna be good for them as much as I loved Romeo Dobbs, he was such a good player for us.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: Um I I think we had too many receivers in there, are trying to get too many things going.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: So we've now got uh Jaden Reed, Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, I expect to play a a lot more this year than he did last year coming out of his his rookie season, and Bo Melton's back in the mix.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: So we've got four strong receivers who can get downfield, get big yards, um, and do what's required as long as they all stay healthy.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: Um Mika's coming back from a defensive side at some point.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: Um Devontae Wyatt is back.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: So all the signs are there that we will be strong.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: Uh Tucker Kraft is back and and doing so well in in um training camps and preseason, so they're gonna wrap him up in Cottonwool, make sure he gets through there.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: Um Luke Van Ness has stepped up, he placks a bloody good game against Pittsburgh, but he's now uh on the injured list.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: Um hopefully he'll be ready for game one.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: It's a little bit of mind games.
- 41:00SPEAKER_01: Um Jordan Love, this is his year to show that he is elite.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: I think he's got he's gotta do that, mainly because there is no one behind him right now.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: Uh and we don't have a Malik Willis there, we don't have this, we don't have that.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: Um Jordan's gonna have to take a lot of the burden on his shoulders, he's gotta stop getting sacked uh stupidly.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: Uh the the offensive line has got to pick up and and have him going.
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: Uh so I'm relatively optimistic today on what our season holds.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: Obviously, we've got a tough schedule, you know, we've got Dallas, you know, Chicago twice, Detroit twice, even Minnesota twice, got to play the Rams, got a few of the other big teams we've got to get through.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: But I'm thinking with good luck at a following wind, eleven and six would be a good outcome for this season, but I can also see it being nine and eight if we can't put teams like the Jets to bed like we should be doing.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Um so we'll see.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: But uh that's my take.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: Eleven and six on the patch.
- 42:06SPEAKER_04: You probably they're they're about to be so riddle me this.
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: If you split your um division games, um you only need to beat the following teams to finish with uh ten wins.
- 42:20SPEAKER_04: Are you ready?
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: Dolphins, Saints, Panthers, Jets, Falcons, Bucks, Cowboys.
- 42:28SPEAKER_04: I don't think you've got a very tough schedule at all, mate.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: It could have been worse, right?
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: But we were only a nine and eighteen last year.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: Don't forget that.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: Um but the problem is we have bad habits of losing to the Browns, the Panthers, um, and a couple of others last year.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean, in all honesty, tying with Dallas was a a dreadful result given how dominant we were in the first half.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: Losing two games to Chicago where we were absolutely dominant for two-thirds of a game.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: That's what we've got to that's what we've got to pick out.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: We've got the weapons and we let two things probably get to us.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: One was uh Christy Watson got injured um uh for for a short period.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: He's gonna get injured, he's a very injury-prone player in a player against the Broncos, um, and and we lost that game probably because we lost that weapon, and uh obviously Mika Parsons getting injured, and we let that get to us.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Um so we're hopefully if we can stay fit this year, if key players can stay fit.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: Um I do worry about the secondary though.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean uh Kishon Nixon at uh cornerback uh uh and uh he's taken to Twitter asking why he's being punished because of having to play in preseason games.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: Um and if he doesn't know the answer to that, then bloody hell.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: There's not many things I agree with some of the Packers fans on.
- 43:53SPEAKER_01: Um but if that's your attitude, then are you the right person to be our number one cornerback?
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: I don't.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Don't think so.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: But we'll see.
- 44:02SPEAKER_04: I think there are three big questions with the Packers.
- 44:05SPEAKER_04: One, what's gonna happen with Jacobs?
- 44:07SPEAKER_04: Two, how you're gonna travel without or before Parsons returns returns.
- 44:13SPEAKER_04: So you finished 0-5 in games um in which Mika Parsons didn't play last season.
- 44:20SPEAKER_04: Um and your defensive success rate in that in those five games plummeted from 10th best to 30th best, and you allowed 28 points per game.
- 44:32SPEAKER_04: So his loss is having an enormous impact on your defence's performance.
- 44:39SPEAKER_04: And then just on that, you've got a new DC Jonathan Gannon, and he's um reportedly shifting to you from a 4-3 to a 3-4 um base, and has reported to the press that he's expecting Parsons to be back for week six.
- 44:56SPEAKER_04: Guess who against Kerry?
- 44:57SPEAKER_04: The Cowboys.
- 44:58SPEAKER_05: Oh, not the Cowboys.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: Hopefully on grass.
- 45:05SPEAKER_04: I think they're your three um real big um question marks and the three things that I'll be looking out for this season.
- 45:13SPEAKER_04: We'll probably get an answer around the Josh Jacobs situation first.
- 45:18SPEAKER_04: Um but um I would imagine by week six, when Parsons is ready to return, we'll be getting a sense of whether Jonathan Gannon's new defensive setup and system um is gonna work.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it didn't look too bad against Pittsburgh.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: But I I want to see more when we play the Broncos uh this week, because tackling wasn't great uh and because Sean Nixon being one of those guilty of just letting players run into him and then run away.
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: So it didn't look like they were playing hard.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: I get it all, it's preseason, you don't want to get yourself injured, but also uh you need to play yourself into some kind of form.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: But uh that's uh that's enough of the the Packers.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: Let's go uh to the Bears.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: Matt, how's your uh optimism?
- 46:05SPEAKER_04: Uh I think I think it's realism, but um let's follow the tried and tested uh path before I start throwing in a bit more personal opinion.
- 46:16SPEAKER_04: So the 11-6 record in 2025.
- 46:19SPEAKER_04: Um we won the NFC North for the first time and a playoff game, first playoff win since 2010.
- 46:28SPEAKER_04: Um Ryan Poles is in his fifth year as a general manager.
- 46:31SPEAKER_04: You fellas know I'm not.
- 46:33SPEAKER_04: Um I don't mind Ryan Poles, I think he wins slightly more than he loses.
- 46:39SPEAKER_04: And um obviously Ben Johnson now enters his second season.
- 46:42SPEAKER_04: He was an um associated press coach of the year finalist, as we know.
- 46:47SPEAKER_04: Look, we'll go as as well as uh Johnson and and Williams go.
- 46:53SPEAKER_04: Um the you know, the hope is that Johnson continues to turn Caleb into um you know franchise record passer.
- 47:03SPEAKER_04: Last year he threw for 3942 yards.
- 47:06SPEAKER_04: Um, and we've all talked about that sort of cardiac bears identity.
- 47:11SPEAKER_04: So seven comeback wins from um losing positions in the final two minutes of games.
- 47:17SPEAKER_04: I can't take any more of that.
- 47:20SPEAKER_04: Um uh defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, um, who was hired in 2025, continues.
- 47:27SPEAKER_04: Um and the coaching staff is largely um has largely remained intact heading into year two.
- 47:33SPEAKER_04: Um, a huge loss than not many people are talking about is Drew Dolman.
- 47:38SPEAKER_04: Um he was pro bowl center, 27 years old.
- 47:42SPEAKER_04: We just signed him, it was his first year, and he announced his retirement at the end of last year.
- 47:47SPEAKER_04: So um that's just something that concerns me greatly.
- 47:52SPEAKER_04: In the draft, we um were expected to go in the direction of bolstering our pass rush and our defensive line, but in the end, um Dylan Thienemann, a safety out of Oregon, who's got an enormous amount of tools and is a super exciting prospect, fell to us at number 25.
- 48:11SPEAKER_04: Um uh by men on many learned accounts, he's a complete steal.
- 48:18SPEAKER_04: Um, and the plan was to pair him with Kobe Bryant, who we signed as a free agent from Super Bowl champion um Seattle Seahawks.
- 48:27SPEAKER_04: But as we've discussed in previous episodes, Kobe Bryant has had a preseason injury, which just continues to get worse every week you read the updates.
- 48:39SPEAKER_04: So the speculation that he'll be out for the year now, um, which is very, very concerning.
- 48:46SPEAKER_04: Um, we also obviously just talked about that sort of full build out of the safety room.
- 48:53SPEAKER_04: So Dylan Dienerman and um Kobe Bryant in, Kevin Bayard and Jaquan Brisker, the 2025 starters out.
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: Um we also signed Devin Bush in free agency, three years 30 million, a linebacker who brings an enormous amount of speed.
- 49:10SPEAKER_04: Believe um Devin Bush was with the Browns last year.
- 49:13SPEAKER_04: Khalif Raymond comes in as a wide receiver to reunite with Ben Johnson.
- 49:18SPEAKER_04: Cam Lewis comes in as cornerback depth.
- 49:21SPEAKER_04: Um, and then um we re-signed DeMarco Jackson, Case Keelan, left tackle Braxton Jones, um, and some um depth players.
- 49:31SPEAKER_04: The big outs were obviously DJ Moore, who we've talked about extensively.
- 49:36SPEAKER_04: He was traded to the Buffalo Bills uh for a second and fifth rounder in 2026.
- 49:43SPEAKER_04: Kevin Bayard left and joined the New England Patriots.
- 49:47SPEAKER_04: And CJ Gardner Johnson at um uh safety um also signed with the Buffalo Bills.
- 49:55SPEAKER_04: What else can I tell you?
- 49:56SPEAKER_04: Um we're the first team in NFL history to play on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday games in the season ahead.
- 50:06SPEAKER_04: Um who knew?
- 50:10SPEAKER_04: We also host Green Bay on Christmas Day this year.
- 50:14SPEAKER_04: Yes, so it's five primetime games.
- 50:16SPEAKER_04: Um Netflix will be all over it, Pete.
- 50:19SPEAKER_04: Um I'll tell you again.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: Fuck Netflix.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: They are shitter sports.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: Stay out of Netflix, stay out of sports.
- 50:28SPEAKER_04: Sorry.
- 50:28SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna continue to be professional.
- 50:31SPEAKER_04: Um, we have our buy-in week 10, five primetime games.
- 50:36SPEAKER_04: Um we're gonna go nine and eight this year.
- 50:39SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah.
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: I I don't think that's a bad show.
- 50:45SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm you didn't mention Carsten Loveland, who who um looked like I thought was a real weapon for you last year.
- 50:51SPEAKER_04: There's a there's a couple of other things that I did want to add.
- 50:53SPEAKER_04: Loveland is a superstar in the making.
- 50:56SPEAKER_04: I would say he's probably already one of the five, arguably one of the five top titans in the league.
- 51:02SPEAKER_04: And you know, we're gonna expect big big things from Luther Burden, the third this year.
- 51:06SPEAKER_04: Now he did get injured in the preseason.
- 51:10SPEAKER_04: Initially it was thought to be yeah, initially it was thought to be serious, it was a groin strain, but um fortunately um he's now only expected to miss the remainder of the offseason.
- 51:23SPEAKER_04: I think we're always gonna score points.
- 51:25SPEAKER_04: It's the defense that concerns me.
- 51:27SPEAKER_04: So 2025, we were just awful, but we led the league with 33 takeaways.
- 51:34SPEAKER_04: So if you just kind of take a step to one side and um sort of crunch the likelihood numbers of that happening again, it's it's it's preposterous to think that you know we're gonna balance out such a poorly performing defense with so many takeaways.
- 51:51SPEAKER_04: Um we lost every defender with multiple interceptions.
- 51:55SPEAKER_04: We've talked about Kevin Bayard, who was an all-pro.
- 51:58SPEAKER_04: He had seven, Naishon Wright, who signed for the Jets, he had eight takeaways.
- 52:03SPEAKER_04: Um, and then obviously the blow of losing Kobe Bryant.
- 52:06SPEAKER_04: So um really the lingering question is can you know the defense keep up?
- 52:12SPEAKER_04: So Ben Johnson's offense averaged 26 points and 370 yards a game, which is most unbears-like, but the defense left no room at all for error.
- 52:25SPEAKER_04: So they conceded 24.4 points a game and 362 yards, so the net net is 1.6 points and eight yards.
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: Um, so you know, we've got one of the worst pass rushes in the league.
- 52:43SPEAKER_04: Don't think we've really done too much to address that.
- 52:47SPEAKER_04: And we've got a winner's schedule which is brutal, utterly brutal.
- 52:52SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, I think realistic Bears fan Matt is gonna stand behind his nine and eight prediction.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: Uh I actually think that's a f that's a fair show uh as well.
- 53:03SPEAKER_01: Um it it's hard, your your um schedule is hard.
- 53:08SPEAKER_01: Again, you've got to play the teams in your division twice.
- 53:11SPEAKER_01: Um if you start poorly, it it could go wrong.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: I think Caleb Williams is was a breath of fresh air last year.
- 53:18SPEAKER_01: Uh teams are gonna play him differently this year.
- 53:20SPEAKER_01: Same for Carson Loveland.
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: All right, last year he was under the radar and then picking up big gains in big games as well, and you know, that that gets you attention.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: And that's the thing, uh him, Tucker Craft is another one.
- 53:36SPEAKER_01: Uh if we come come back to that, that more more and more people will be paying attention to him now and and it's not gonna be as easy this year.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: And and they say if your your differential is plus two points of a g a game, you're gonna be on the minus two points at some point um throughout the season.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: So I think nine and eight's a fair show.
- 53:56SPEAKER_01: I uh I can't see any of these sides winning 13 games.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: Um and I think the uh the eleven eleven, ten, nine, I I think that that will qualify you as sixth in in the playoffs.
- 54:09SPEAKER_01: But we'll we'll see.
- 54:10SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 54:11SPEAKER_01: Uh exciting things.
- 54:13SPEAKER_04: The other wild card in all of this, Pete, is we've talked about our brutal opponents schedule, but this super weird five, you know, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday games across the season, we're gonna be having long weeks, short weeks, short weeks, short weeks, long weeks.
- 54:31SPEAKER_04: And our buy isn't until week ten.
- 54:33SPEAKER_04: So there's not even a you know, there's not even a league um mandated reset point um until you know well past the halfway stage of the season.
- 54:44SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I'm um I'm not I'm not um expecting us to repeat as as division champions this this season.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: Very good.
- 54:54SPEAKER_01: Very good.
- 54:55SPEAKER_01: Well, uh I think we've had some uh two brutally honest thoughts about our our teams there.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: So um as we come to the end of our preview, last and by definitely least, um the Detroit Lions.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: Uh Carrie.
- 55:09SPEAKER_01: This is this is gonna be a tough one as well.
- 55:11SPEAKER_01: Um, it's gonna be short and sweet.
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: They're crap.
- 55:14SPEAKER_05: Let's move on.
- 55:14SPEAKER_05: They're crazy.
- 55:16SPEAKER_05: Look, you you called it last year, and uh I was definitely higher on Detroit last year.
- 55:22SPEAKER_05: I I don't think they've changed much as a team.
- 55:25SPEAKER_05: So I think they're probably in a similar position this year.
- 55:29SPEAKER_05: If you look at the the um season that passed and uh where they um should go this year.
- 55:37SPEAKER_05: Um last year, nine and eight, just missed the playoffs, as you know.
- 55:41SPEAKER_05: Um they look had a tough year because the previous year they were successful, and so they lost um, you know, both the offensive coordinator and the defensive coordinator.
- 55:52SPEAKER_05: So you kind of could um see it.
- 55:55SPEAKER_05: Um I didn't see it.
- 55:57SPEAKER_05: I know you did, Pete, um, but I thought, you know, they'll get past this.
- 56:00SPEAKER_05: They're a pretty um strong team.
- 56:03SPEAKER_05: This year they've um, you know, done some rejig because last year was not successful.
- 56:08SPEAKER_05: So offensive coordinator um John Morton uh was demoted slash fired, not sure exactly which one, because he's still in the organization, but um, then they hired Drew uh Petzing.
- 56:22SPEAKER_05: The problem I have with that is he's an ex-Cardinals offensive coordinator.
- 56:27SPEAKER_05: And I I just when I saw that, I was like, oh, the standout offensive team of the Cardinals they brought in to rescue them this year.
- 56:38SPEAKER_05: So that um to me just means oof, um, there wasn't many choices.
- 56:43SPEAKER_05: Maybe there's some personal relationship that I don't know about, but um that is their new offensive coordinator.
- 56:48SPEAKER_05: Uh otherwise, they um spent um, I don't know how this breaks down, but reportedly one billion dollars securing their core offensive and defensive um resources.
- 57:03SPEAKER_05: So they basically wanted to, you know, hold tight, keep everybody uh that they had, and double down on them, which is pretty impressive.
- 57:13SPEAKER_05: They uh signed uh center Cade May, um, 25 mil.
- 57:18SPEAKER_05: Uh they traded away uh Montgomery to the Texans, um, but replaced him with uh Pacheco, which I think, you know, I know Pacheco's a bit uh elderly.
- 57:32SPEAKER_05: He's a Super Bowl winner, right?
- 57:33SPEAKER_05: Super Bowl winner.
- 57:34SPEAKER_05: That's right, that's right.
- 57:35SPEAKER_05: But he know he knows how to um to play the game, which is great.
- 57:40SPEAKER_05: And uh you can't forget that um you know Jared Goff is still one of the best quarterbacks out there.
- 57:46SPEAKER_05: And um Is he though?
- 57:48SPEAKER_05: Is he I I I think he is.
- 57:50SPEAKER_05: I just think he's steady.
- 57:51SPEAKER_05: He's he's a steady hand.
- 57:53SPEAKER_05: Um he doesn't make too many mistakes, so I actually still still you know still dig him.
- 57:59SPEAKER_05: Um maybe it's just because he was on quarterback, but um that's the that's the way it is.
- 58:05SPEAKER_05: And they've got the best running back in the league.
- 58:08SPEAKER_05: Uh so Jameer Gibbs, um, they signed him for three years, 67.5 million dollars for three years, makes him the highest paid running back in history, and um you know deserves it because he um had 49 touchdowns in the past three seasons, which is the most ever, and surpass um Barry Sanders, another great line.
- 58:34SPEAKER_05: Um so I I think they've got uh some you know some good ingredients, but like you're both pointing out, the division is tough.
- 58:46SPEAKER_05: I can't see them making up too much ground in the division.
- 58:50SPEAKER_05: I had them at 10 and 7, but now I'm kind of questioning that just after you guys, because I think I don't see them as better than you know e either of your team.
- 59:02SPEAKER_05: So uh it's maybe that's a good show.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: Look, um Jameer Gibbs is good.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: It's not in the same bracket as Barry Sanders, so it's absolutely scandalous we're even mentioning him in the same breath.
- 59:14SPEAKER_03: Just say it, just say it.
- 59:16SPEAKER_01: But uh for me, and and I think I said this a number of times last year, so for regular listeners who who know what I re when I get on a rant about Detroit, I talk about the same thing.
- 59:26SPEAKER_01: When you stop him from running, they've got nothing.
- 59:29SPEAKER_01: They've absolutely got nothing.
- 59:31SPEAKER_01: All the games they lost last year, I I I think if you go back and analyse them, especially both games against the Packers, uh Gibbs didn't probably do a hundred yards in either of them.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: Um actually combined probably didn't make a hundred yards.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: You stop them from running and they're a little bit lacking.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: Um they had what they also had the the wonderful uh Frank Rangnick scenario last year where they uh uh brought him out of retirement for him to retire two days later because he couldn't pass his medical or whatever, which is you know we'll we'll have to see who's gonna be the Frank Rangnick of this year.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: Um but we'll we'll we'll see.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: Uh uh look, I don't like Detroit, but uh ten and seven, I think they can get to ten and seven.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: Their schedule's a little bit softer than uh Green Bay's and and and Chicago's, I think.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: Um so we'll see.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_01: But uh beware I will be chuckling every time they lose next week.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_01: I know, I know.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_04: And and now I get it.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_04: The athletic has them down as having the easiest schedule in the entire league by strength of opponent.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_04: Um and I can deem potentially Kerry help demystify this Drew Peting thing.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_04: Um he runs uh under the center offensive system, um, which um obviously the Lions feel fits well with where they want Jared Goff to be um operating and and and back to.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_04: Goff took a career high 38 sacks last year, Pete.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_04: So um that would have clearly impacted his numbers.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_04: But um I um I think they're gonna bounce back.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_04: I I'm gonna go against both of you, and I think the Lions are gonna bounce back and win the division.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_01: Big show.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: That is a big show.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_04: Well, I mean, they've got so let's just run through a two or three things here.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_04: I did it with another team.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_04: They've got Jared Goff, who I'm I'm with you, Kerry.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_04: I do think he's he's still got game.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_04: Um they've got Ironman Ras and Brown, Sam Reporter, um, Jameer Gibbs.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_04: There's four four upper echelong offensive weapons.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_04: But they had all them last year.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_04: They did, but they also didn't deserve them, did it?
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_04: They they also had injuries last last year, um, and a tough schedule.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_04: And I think they've got a super, super easy schedule.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_04: Um, so I um I can easily see them, you know, even if they're not playing their best, just accumulating the dubs.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_04: Um and that that's what gets you in the playoffs.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well that's true.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: There'll be some big uh divisional games this year because they'll they'll be really key.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_01: Uh good because at the end of the day, it could end up like last season, we could end up with three teams on ten and seven.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_01: Uh or or or worse, four teams on nine and eight.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: And if you've got four teams on nine and eight, it it's all down to who you beat in your own league.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_01: So um interesting season for the NFC North.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: Well, everybody, that brings uh previews to the end.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_01: Um next week we'll launch into our predictions.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_01: So uh gentlemen, I'll send you out some categories uh during the week um for for us to predict on.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: And and next week we'll reveal to everyone what we are predicting for next season.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_01: We won't hide it in an envelope and then bring it out at the end of the year.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_01: Um I think that's the best way.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_01: You sure?
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_01: So we'll go through that.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_01: We'll talk a little bit about the preseason games going on this weekend.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: All our teams have another game uh to get through.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_01: So, gentlemen, uh go to your loins and watch your team, and I'll try and pick up some of the uh slack around uh some of our Super Bowl favourite teams, see how they're going through preseason, maybe even uh check out who's quarterbacking for Cleveland Browns this week.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_01: Uh and on that uh that note, uh a little bit long this week, but I'm sure you'll forgive us all for uh going into it more in the detail.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_01: Uh thank you, gentlemen.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I'll see you all next week.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_04: Ta-da.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_00: That's a wrap on another episode of the Mostly Football Show.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_00: Don't forget to subscribe and review or get in touch at mostly football twenty-five at gmail dot com.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_00: See you next week.
