- 0:04- Welcome to the Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 0:06I'm Olivia.
- 0:07- And I'm Shauna.
- 0:08- I am so excited to chat with you.
- 0:11I feel like it has been a while.
- 0:14I've lived some lives.
- 0:16I've seen some things since then.
- 0:18How are you surviving this 115 degree weather?
- 0:23- You know, it hasn't been too bad lately.
- 0:26It is supposedly monsoon.
- 0:28See, and then here in Phoenix, but...
- 0:31- It's been kind of hidden missed the last couple years.
- 0:34And we did get a little bit of rain a couple weeks ago.
- 0:36So it hasn't been terrible, but I don't know.
- 0:39I've lived here for 36 years.
- 0:40I'm used to it by now.
- 0:42And I have a pool, not to brag.
- 0:44- That was by the way.
- 0:45- I have a pool.
- 0:47I am living in the pool.
- 0:49My friend and I were chatting and she was like,
- 0:52I literally just took my broth after a call.
- 0:55And I swear that it made a splat noise
- 0:58'cause it was so hot and sweating.
- 1:00And it made me be like, wait,
- 1:03should there be special bras for the desert?
- 1:06Like almost like a swimsuit material.
- 1:09And then, yeah, I know.
- 1:11I'm giving one this idea for free.
- 1:13- And like a pocket on each titty.
- 1:15- You could put like a gel ice pack into.
- 1:18- Ooh.
- 1:19- Yeah, like a cooling pad on the tits.
- 1:22That is brilliant. - Yeah, I love that.
- 1:24- Yeah, really. - That's really,
- 1:25you would be quite nipple.
- 1:27- Yeah, that's okay. - Yeah.
- 1:29- That's okay.
- 1:30We could put extra padding over the nipple
- 1:32if we wanted to if you didn't want to be nipple-y
- 1:35or we could have the conchardation version
- 1:37with the built-in nipple.
- 1:38- Yeah.
- 1:39- In case you wanted to be nipple-y.
- 1:41- Yeah, I want everyone to know I'm cold.
- 1:43(laughing)
- 1:44- We'll have them with fake piercings on it.
- 1:46It'll be great, it'll be great.
- 1:47- That, yeah.
- 1:48So, you know, if you still that idea,
- 1:51just credit me in some way.
- 1:53I love how I come up with that idea
- 1:55after I leave the desert.
- 1:57(laughing)
- 1:58Your tits were super sweaty, it's fine.
- 2:00- Yeah, they were just, you know,
- 2:02underboop sweat, really a big thing.
- 2:04I did, I will say, I went back to Phoenix for four days
- 2:09and I got to have lunch with Shana, which was lovely.
- 2:13I will say, you forget how bad it is quickly.
- 2:17Like I was underboop sweating, like a mofo.
- 2:21I burned my hands on the steering wheel.
- 2:24- Oh my god.
- 2:25- I was just saying.
- 2:26- I literally burned my hands anymore.
- 2:27And the underboop sweat, I just lifted the tit
- 2:30and put a little deodorant under each one.
- 2:32- Okay, so we'll put diodes.
- 2:34- We'll put diodes under your boobs.
- 2:35- Rohan, Phoenix has.
- 2:37- Phoenix, yes.
- 2:38(laughing)
- 2:40- Lived in Phoenix for a very long time,
- 2:42but since then, since my quick jaunt to Phoenix,
- 2:47I actually got to see Lady Gaga lives.
- 2:50- So I told Andrew, I was like,
- 2:54I'm gonna be really petty for a minute
- 2:56and I'm like, I'm mad at Olivia.
- 2:59And he's like, why are you mad at Olivia?
- 3:01I'm like, I'm not actually mad.
- 3:02It's just like, I try so hard to not be jealous
- 3:06of other women.
- 3:08And I was so painfully jealous of you
- 3:12that it moved, I became a person I didn't like.
- 3:15(laughing)
- 3:17It made me mad.
- 3:19'Cause I was so fucking jealous.
- 3:21Was she just incredible?
- 3:23- So first of all, it was amazing.
- 3:26That was the first time I had ever seen Gaga live.
- 3:29And it was great.
- 3:30It was Mayhem Ball, so I should have played a lot of Mayhem tracks
- 3:34and then of course, like the hit.
- 3:37I would say, you know, like, okay.
- 3:39So the ultimate pro tip for anyone who likes to be
- 3:44a little bit bougie and also see the pop girl at least.
- 3:48If you live in a place or near a place where a show is,
- 3:52look, like two to three days before the show goes live
- 3:57and you will see tickets that were like three grand drop,
- 4:01like a ton.
- 4:03That's what I did for Taylor.
- 4:04- Right.
- 4:05- We got box seats for Taylor Swift at SoFi Stadium,
- 4:10which normally would have been like five grand.
- 4:12- Yeah, they dropped a ton.
- 4:14And we got them for 800, which is a lot of money.
- 4:18I'm saying this from a place of, you know, extreme privilege.
- 4:22But because of that, I went with one of the owners
- 4:26of my company, the Taylor Swift.
- 4:28Her and I are both like big pop girl fans
- 4:31and we saw that Lady Gaga was playing and we were like,
- 4:34do we do what we did for Taylor
- 4:36and just we just pulled the trigger and see?
- 4:38And I was just gonna...
- 4:39- I was just paying for them.
- 4:41- 400.
- 4:42- Oh, God.
- 4:43We got box seats for that and it was open bar and street food.
- 4:48And it was actually really good food.
- 4:52So like I was like, okay, I'm drinking.
- 4:55I have a private bar, I have a private bathroom.
- 4:58I'm literally so close, like I could see embellishments
- 5:02like on her.
- 5:03Now of course they're in a box.
- 5:04So you are, you aren't on the floor.
- 5:06Floor tickets were like 400 bucks as well,
- 5:09which were crazy.
- 5:10- 400, that's insane.
- 5:11- Yes.
- 5:12- They were 400 when I looked, but I also had to consider
- 5:15if I went to San Francisco 'cause she's not coming to Phoenix.
- 5:18I would've had to pay for the tickets and the flight.
- 5:21I would stay with you for free, so that's nice.
- 5:23But you know we're gonna spend so much money on food
- 5:28and alcohol and I'd need a new outfit
- 5:30and I'm like, I just can't make that happen right now.
- 5:33I am gonna see ghosts in a few weeks,
- 5:35but that's easy.
- 5:36There's just gonna be a Phoenix.
- 5:38And then nine itch nails in September.
- 5:41- That'll be fun.
- 5:41But I'm not mad at you anymore, but I was.
- 5:44For like, it's out there.
- 5:45- For the night.
- 5:46- Yeah.
- 5:47- For the night, you're like this bitch.
- 5:48Yeah, she's not even a little monster.
- 5:50Yeah, it's so fun.
- 5:51- I know, it's like she better have a newfound respect
- 5:53for Gaga out to this.
- 5:54- Oh yeah, totally.
- 5:55I mean, I think it's like one of those things.
- 5:57So I have decided if it's something iconic
- 6:01and like I like the music and maybe I'm not like a diehard
- 6:05like, sweetie.
- 6:06- It's worth it.
- 6:07- I'm still gonna do it.
- 6:08It's gonna be amazing and cool.
- 6:10And so this weekend, Dad and Company is having their
- 6:1560th anniversary show here and the Grateful Dead.
- 6:20- Oh, I was like, Dad and Company, the fuck,
- 6:23oh the Grateful Dead.
- 6:24- Oh the Grateful Dead, yeah.
- 6:24- Yeah, the Grateful Dead.
- 6:26It's their 60th anniversary show.
- 6:28It's in Golden Gate Parts.
- 6:30- It's a Sturgial Simpson.
- 6:31- Right.
- 6:32- Right, they're old.
- 6:33It's their, and Sturgial Simpson is their opener.
- 6:36I'm going.
- 6:37So I've dropped a lot of money on concerts and lots of you days.
- 6:42- But then, so this weekend I'm going to that.
- 6:45And then next weekend, the weekend after that is outside land.
- 6:49So I am just about to see an insane amount of artists
- 6:53and everyone, my resolution for this year
- 6:57is also to see as much live music as possible.
- 7:00- I am so happy for you.
- 7:02- Yeah, you are doing a great job.
- 7:03I, I don't know.
- 7:05I've gone to my fair share this year, but I got to step it up.
- 7:08I was supposed to go to work to or this weekend,
- 7:10but I bought the tickets like way before the lineup
- 7:13even came out and it eventually is like,
- 7:15"Nh, none of these are really doing it."
- 7:18For me, I just ended up selling them.
- 7:19So.
- 7:20- Yeah, I was looking at when we were young,
- 7:23like that's upcoming.
- 7:25Looks pretty good, but we'd have to go to Vegas.
- 7:27So.
- 7:28- Oh damn.
- 7:29(laughs)
- 7:31No, no, my next trip is to see you, bitch.
- 7:33I can't have any more trips.
- 7:35I have to save some money.
- 7:37- Yes, yes, exactly.
- 7:38- Labor day weekend.
- 7:40- Yes.
- 7:41And you know, that's what happens when you are childless.
- 7:46I was about to say marriedless, actually,
- 7:50when you are single, because there are truly some dangers
- 7:55to being married.
- 7:57- It's true.
- 7:57- And we're gonna talk about that when we come back
- 7:59from our next week.
- 8:00(dramatic music)
- 8:04(dramatic music)
- 8:05- Marriage can be scary, right?
- 8:07We always hear about these crazy stories of cheating,
- 8:12infidelity, but what happens when we see married couples
- 8:18who murder.
- 8:19- Don't apologize always.
- 8:21- Don't apologize always.
- 8:22- Apocultures has always been obsessed with the husband
- 8:26who has a secret.
- 8:28But what are some of the most iconic marriage cases?
- 8:33Killers and people who stick with us
- 8:37with throughout the years,
- 8:38throughout the many iterations of Hollywood,
- 8:41who are the most iconic murderous couples?
- 8:45And Shana, I wanna start with who you think
- 8:48is the most iconic murderous, married couple.
- 8:53They don't have to both be murderous, but.
- 8:57- That is interesting.
- 8:58Most iconic, actually, I think the most iconic
- 9:01is probably gonna be one of the movies
- 9:02that I chose to talk about, which is Jack Torrance
- 9:06from The Shining.
- 9:07So we'll get into that a little more in depth.
- 9:09But I think when I think of like your husband's snaps
- 9:13and goes crazy and wants to kill,
- 9:14that's what I think of.
- 9:16Or, oh God, what's that movie?
- 9:19Ryan Reynolds is in the remake,
- 9:22and they're in the house.
- 9:23- Amnibal?
- 9:24- Yeah, there you go.
- 9:25There it is, Amnibal.
- 9:27- Amnibal horror.
- 9:28- Which may or may not be a true story.
- 9:31So that's pretty iconic too.
- 9:33And I guess before talking about a movie
- 9:35where they're both quote killers, Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
- 9:40They're both like hitmen, hit lady.
- 9:42So, you know, it's not like that horror killer
- 9:46and like she's their murderers, but they kill people.
- 9:50- For murder?
- 9:51- There's murder, no doubt.
- 9:52- There's murder.
- 9:53- There's murder.
- 9:54- A murderous mother.
- 9:55- A murderous mother.
- 9:57- Murder?
- 10:00I would say, you know, you have some like,
- 10:02people who wouldn't necessarily like put into that category,
- 10:06like Tony Soprano, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, you know, within that.
- 10:11But I always think back to the characters that,
- 10:16you kind of see either trying to murder each other
- 10:19or there's this finding of a big secret
- 10:23that they murdered someone.
- 10:24And it's like, are they gonna move into it
- 10:27and help them cover it up?
- 10:29Or are they gonna try to get out?
- 10:30Like I think that's such an interesting story.
- 10:32We've seen it so much in pop culture
- 10:34or it just intrude crime as well.
- 10:37And so yeah, I wanna know,
- 10:39what do you think is the most iconic movie or TV show?
- 10:43- So TV show, not on my list either,
- 10:46but Dexter comes to mind here too,
- 10:48which I am obsessed with.
- 10:49I haven't started the newest season
- 10:52where it's surprised he's not dead, but I really want to.
- 10:56It's gotten good reviews so far.
- 10:57But obviously Dexter is a serial killer
- 11:00and he is married.
- 11:01He hides it from his wife Rita.
- 11:04Obviously, RIP Rita, season four.
- 11:07I'm just spoiling this show,
- 11:08but it came out so long ago that what happened.
- 11:11- I think you've done that over the course of many episodes.
- 11:14Talk me about Dexter.
- 11:16- I love Dexter, dude.
- 11:17It is, we have like a Dexter premiere party,
- 11:20I mean, some of my girlfriends back in the day
- 11:23for the final season.
- 11:24I'd like cupcakes with like bloody syringes.
- 11:26- I love that.
- 11:27- In the Barbie doll, all chopped up.
- 11:28It was great.
- 11:30But yeah, Dexter, I think, is probably one of the most
- 11:32iconic TV show, like he's a killer
- 11:36and his wife doesn't know situation.
- 11:39Anything else that you can think of?
- 11:41- And I think of iconic killers that just stick with you.
- 11:44I mean, you have to go like Walter White
- 11:46within that as well.
- 11:48- Yeah.
- 11:49That's true.
- 11:50He definitely is a killer.
- 11:51It's like when you first think about it,
- 11:52you're like, oh no, he's not a kid.
- 11:53Wait.
- 11:55- Wait.
- 11:55- He's mercen people.
- 11:57- He is mercen people.
- 11:59And it's Skylar like sticks with him and, you know,
- 12:04not very happy about it, but she does.
- 12:07- Yeah.
- 12:08(laughing)
- 12:10- Yeah.
- 12:10And both of us brought two movies that we want to really
- 12:14dive into and talk about a little bit deeper.
- 12:18The ones that have stuck with us throughout the year.
- 12:20So we're gonna take a quick break and then we'll dive in.
- 12:23(dramatic music)
- 12:26(dramatic music)
- 12:28- So we're talking about movies and maybe even some streaming
- 12:30shows have thrown in there.
- 12:32Where two spouses absolutely have it in for each other.
- 12:35Maybe one wants the other dead,
- 12:37one's trying to actually hide that they have a big fat secret
- 12:40and are willing to kill each other,
- 12:42to keep it a secret.
- 12:44While we see this a lot in cheesy lifetime movies,
- 12:48maybe like a, you know, as Shana said,
- 12:51a monomose foul is the name of it.
- 12:53There's a specific mainstream film
- 12:57that is all about romantic mayhem.
- 12:59But before we start looking at marriage gone wrong,
- 13:01now is the time to remind you about the Patreon.

- 13:26And we'll be reshur to remind you about that later.
- 13:30- Yaw, yaw, we will.
- 13:32- So as I mentioned, we have the roses coming out shortly,
- 13:37which is actually a remake of 1989's War of the Roses.
- 13:42We have, you know, powerhouses, Benedict Cumberbatch,
- 13:46Olivia Coleman, Andy Sandberg, Kate McKinnon,
- 13:49Allison, Jannie, and more.
- 13:52- That's a stacked cat.
- 13:54- Yeah, amazing, right?
- 13:56Coleman and Cumberbatch play soon to be X's,
- 13:59whose marriage goes very, very bad.
- 14:02And they battle over who gets the house in the divorce.
- 14:05And this comes out on August 29th.
- 14:08And it got us thinking, what are some couples
- 14:11that you have just seen in cinema where you're like,
- 14:15"Uh oh, things are gonna go wrong."
- 14:18And oftentimes a little bit murderous.
- 14:21- A little murderous.
- 14:22So I think a good example of this.
- 14:26And maybe they don't quite kill each other,
- 14:30but everyone thinks they do.
- 14:31It's the movie Gone Girl from 2013.
- 14:34- It's not a good one, yeah.
- 14:35- Oh my God, it sticks with you from the minute you see it.
- 14:38It's just so unnerving and the way she looks at the camera
- 14:43and just like her, she's definitely a murderer.
- 14:47So it's based on the psychological thriller Gone Girl
- 14:50by Gillian Flynn.
- 14:52So the film is directed by David Fincher
- 14:55and it follows the mysterious disappearance of Amy,
- 14:58who is played by Rosamond Pike
- 15:00and the ensuing media frenzy and police investigation
- 15:03while her husband Nick becomes the prime suspect.
- 15:07And it just, Nick is a shithead, right?
- 15:10So come to find out, Amy staged the entire disappearance
- 15:15and made this elaborate scheme to make it look like Nick killed her
- 15:19because she wants to frame him for murder
- 15:21to get back at him from cheating on her.
- 15:24And also just to kind of get like the power
- 15:28of the relationship back into her hands,
- 15:31they definitely have kind of a, I don't know,
- 15:34it kind of seems like in the beginning of the movie
- 15:36that's kind of where their passion is drawn from
- 15:38is kind of just being antagonizing each other
- 15:42and she needs to get that control and revenge back,
- 15:45stages her own death, leaves and frames,
- 15:49Nick, been apholic for murder.
- 15:51- Yeah, I honestly think this movie is so iconic.
- 15:55Like Rosamond Pike is so good in it, honestly.
- 15:59Her cool girl monologue, it, like I will think about that
- 16:04till the day I die ultimately,
- 16:07like the writing within that is,
- 16:10and the way she delivers it is just so good.
- 16:14And like not all women see themselves within her,
- 16:18but like they can see when that monologue happens,
- 16:21like if you've ever dated men,
- 16:24like you will be like, oh yeah, like they want the cool girl,
- 16:27they want this and you do not agree with her.
- 16:30Obviously she has a personality disorder,
- 16:33but you see how she could get there.
- 16:35Like it's really like one of those early good
- 16:37for her movies.
- 16:39It literally, it makes sense.
- 16:40Like you wouldn't go that far,
- 16:42but you can see why she got to that conclusion.
- 16:45And you do find yourself going, good for her.
- 16:48- Yeah. - The scene,
- 16:50- Ah, will!
- 16:51- The scene where she kills Neopatra carous
- 16:54and like slits his throat while they're having sex,
- 16:57stuck with me for so long.
- 17:00It is like sad limp dick just falling over the side.
- 17:03(laughing)
- 17:05And then she ends up coming home,
- 17:07just drenched in blood and is like,
- 17:10now you got to deal with this.
- 17:11Like, and how do they keep this marriage going?
- 17:15How do they keep this relationship going?
- 17:17Do they?
- 17:18After everything that they have put each other through,
- 17:21after her being like, now you see what I'm fucking capable of,
- 17:24right?
- 17:25So she took that control back in the relationship.
- 17:29And I love that movie.
- 17:31- Yeah, I think it's just ultimately like so good.
- 17:34It is like one of those femme fatale women.
- 17:38And, you know, I actually think one of the movies
- 17:41that I picked really contrast with this well,
- 17:44I think it's kind of interesting to see,
- 17:46you said it came out in 2014, right?
- 17:49The way that this type of character has evolved
- 17:52because one of my favorite romantic mayhem murderous women
- 17:57is actually Sharon Stone and Basic Instinct.
- 18:03I've never seen Basic Instincts.
- 18:06I know, it occurred to me recently
- 18:09when Andrew and I were talking about like,
- 18:11showing vagina in movies.
- 18:13(laughing)
- 18:15- Okay.
- 18:16- And I was like, oh yeah.
- 18:18That's like the most iconic show your vagina scene of all time.
- 18:22- Yeah, for the power of an individual you are.
- 18:26- How have you never seen Basic Instincts?
- 18:29- I don't know, but I should.
- 18:31That should be my next one.
- 18:33- Yes, it's also set in San Francisco.
- 18:36So when I first moved here, like the week on Muteers,
- 18:39I was like, I gotta watch Basic Instinct.
- 18:41- And the Princess Diaries.
- 18:43- Yes, yeah, you know.
- 18:44- Back to back.
- 18:45- Yeah, you know, both femme fatales, you know.
- 18:48- Double feature makes sense.
- 18:50- Which just makes sense.
- 18:52- But Captain Trammell, you know,
- 18:55iconic, open the legs shot
- 18:58that we've all seen, parodied so many times,
- 19:01and is what, you know, I unfortunately,
- 19:04I think Sharon Stone is most known for.
- 19:06- Yeah, follow-up character.
- 19:08- But this movie came out in 1992,
- 19:10and it is known as an erotic thriller,
- 19:14and Michael J. Fox is, or no, no.
- 19:18Michael J. Fox.
- 19:19- I was like, wow, I really wanna see this.
- 19:21Now that sounds amazing.
- 19:22(laughing)
- 19:23- Michael Douglas.
- 19:25- Okay, that means,
- 19:26yeah, Michael Douglas is in it, Sharon Stone is in it,
- 19:29and it really is like this femme fatale,
- 19:32she's playing like these power games
- 19:35with the detective Michael Douglas,
- 19:38and it's really kind of about like obsession and control,
- 19:42and she's playing like kind of this, this cat and mouse.
- 19:45So the detective is investigating her
- 19:47for murdering her husband,
- 19:50and so he kind of like meets her at this moment,
- 19:54but he becomes like an enthralled and obsessed with her,
- 19:59and she is just like the hottest woman you have ever seen.
- 20:03Everyone is obsessed with her.
- 20:04She exudes sex like she's like, no.
- 20:07- Don't say whether or not she did kill her husband.
- 20:09- Even though this movie came out in 1992.
- 20:12- 1999, I wanna see it now.
- 20:14- Okay, yeah, and it is, you know,
- 20:17defined as the 90s erotic thriller.
- 20:21I mean, honestly, I think that it is such a unique movie,
- 20:25and I want more movies like it,
- 20:27where it's just like, I do think like Gone Girl
- 20:30is kind of like our generation's version of that.
- 20:34Amy Dunn is a lot more multifaceted,
- 20:37than the way that Sharon Stone is portrayed in it,
- 20:41or I guess Catherine Trammell is portrayed in it.
- 20:44- I think that might just be like the progression
- 20:46of how female characters are written too, over time,
- 20:49like 2014, and you know, it's based on a novel.
- 20:52It's like, yeah, she sucks, but how did she get to this point?
- 20:56Why is she doing what she does?
- 20:57And the husband fucking sucks too, so.
- 21:00- Yeah, that's a bit too big.
- 21:02- Yes, and it is kind of like a whirlwind,
- 21:07but we get caught in, but yeah, I really love that movie,
- 21:11and I think it's so interesting.
- 21:12So you don't get to see the marriage
- 21:15that makes her a murderous spouse,
- 21:17but the parts you do get are just great.
- 21:21- I am gonna add that to my list.
- 21:25- Yeah, to be watched.
- 21:27- Yes, the TV watched movie list that I have in my phone.
- 21:31So I mentioned this earlier in the episode,
- 21:34but I do think one of the most,
- 21:36if not the most iconic, like killer spouse movie
- 21:39of all time is The Shining.
- 21:41The Shining came out in 1980.
- 21:43It is a horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick,
- 21:45based on the Stephen King novel.
- 21:47So it centers on Jack Torrance,
- 21:49who's played by Jack Nicholson.
- 21:51He's a writer who accepts a job
- 21:53as the winter caretaker of the remote overlook hotel
- 21:57located in the mountains,
- 21:58and he brings his wife Wendy
- 22:00with her amazing cigarette with the long ash.
- 22:03And their son, Danny, who has psychic abilities
- 22:08called The Shining.
- 22:09That is kind of dived in,
- 22:11driven, broken, dived, dived into.
- 22:15Dived into more in the sequel, which is called,
- 22:19"God Your Sleep."
- 22:20So in this movie, there is,
- 22:24there's malevolent forces in the house
- 22:26that slowly start to drive Jack insane.
- 22:29All work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy.
- 22:32He starts writing that over and over again
- 22:35in his typewriter.
- 22:36He's seeing ghosts.
- 22:37He's hallucinating.
- 22:39Or maybe the ghost are really there
- 22:41because Danny's seeing them a lot too.
- 22:43There's a naked lady in a bathtub.
- 22:45There's some twins in the hallway.
- 22:48There is blood coming out of the elevator.
- 22:51And then that famous scene where he finally snaps
- 22:54and is chasing Danny and Wendy through the hotel
- 22:58with an axe breaks down the door.
- 23:01He hears Johnny just amazing and iconic.
- 23:06And eventually, oh God, now I'm spoiling the fucking Shining.
- 23:10But you know what, whatever.
- 23:11Leads them into the maze where Jack meets his frigid demise.
- 23:16But the entire adventure that gets us there is twisted
- 23:21and you don't quite know if the things
- 23:23that they're seeing are actually there,
- 23:25they're imagining them.
- 23:27That picture in the end, we don't know if that means
- 23:29that Jack's been absorbed into the house
- 23:32or if he's been there before.
- 23:34It's one of those movies that has kind of left up
- 23:36for interpretation a little bit at the end.
- 23:39Even though I guess Dr. Sleeve kind of ties up some of that.
- 23:42But just a forever endearing classic horror movie
- 23:47and probably one of the most classics of all time.
- 23:51- Yeah, you honestly cannot be Kubrick like anything.
- 23:56I think he's just like such a master film maker
- 23:59and I could go on forever
- 24:00about like different little things in there.
- 24:02But because I love that movie so much,
- 24:06one of the times that I went to Denver,
- 24:09we actually drove up to Estes Park.
- 24:12- I love that stand. - And so cute.
- 24:15- Yeah, and so we toured the Stanley Hotel,
- 24:17which is the hotel that Stephen King stayed in
- 24:21when he wrote the shining.
- 24:23- Oh, that's cool.
- 24:24- And so they do ghost tours, they talk about like all these
- 24:27sidings, we went during the day, I do want to go
- 24:30at like for one of the night tours.
- 24:32- Oh, that'd be so cool. - We're like,
- 24:33a fake sayon or whatever.
- 24:36I am extremely sensitive to elevation though.
- 24:40So it did not do well up there.
- 24:44It's like 11,000 feet above sea level there.
- 24:47It's crazy.
- 24:48But fun fact, also where they filmed Dumb and Dumber.
- 24:53(laughing)
- 24:56- I didn't know that actually.
- 24:57I don't know why.
- 24:58- I probably, I told you.
- 25:00- Yeah, it's probably you who told me that.
- 25:02- I've been to Estes Park also and it was beautiful,
- 25:05but I am also very sensitive to elevation.
- 25:07So that's still very long.
- 25:10- They basically were like, if you feel like a ghost
- 25:13just touching you, it's probably not that.
- 25:14It's probably you getting elevation sickness
- 25:17and you should sit down and I'm like, got it.
- 25:19I should go sit.
- 25:21- You think it's a ghost, you're actually just passing away.
- 25:24So you should probably go to a lower altitude.
- 25:28- Yeah, I'm fine.
- 25:29- Maybe that's how they get the ghosts.
- 25:30You just die in elevation sickness.
- 25:32- The other fun fact is Stephen King hates the Stanley Kubrick
- 25:37interpretation of the book.
- 25:40He hates the movie.
- 25:41- What?
- 25:42- Yeah, he hates the movie.
- 25:43Yeah.
- 25:43- Oh my goodness.
- 25:44- Yep.
- 25:45Yeah, and his name, before he died, they had like beef.
- 25:50Yeah.
- 25:51Stanley Kubrick.
- 25:52- We should, he's still alive.
- 25:54- Did we talk about that in our celebrity beef episode?
- 25:57'Cause we absolutely should.
- 25:58That's how it's amazing.
- 25:59- Oh no, but yeah, he does not like the version.
- 26:02- Yeah.
- 26:03- And like, yeah, they were, they were feuding for a long time.
- 26:06But Kubrick is so interesting.
- 26:08And yeah, I think that, you know, that kind of like,
- 26:11he's Johnny and Jack Nicholson's face and it is so creepy.
- 26:15Like it just sticks with you, iconic imagery
- 26:18throughout the years.
- 26:19And, you know, Shelley DuVall was like,
- 26:22absolutely tortured on that movie.
- 26:23So real man, ensued from Kubrick making her do that scene.
- 26:28Like, what, like 90 times?
- 26:31- Yeah, I was.
- 26:32- I don't remember.
- 26:32- Just about to say it like, yeah, I mean,
- 26:34Kubrick was amazing and there was no denying that.
- 26:37But like, he tortured Shelley DuVall and she--
- 26:41- Probably other people.
- 26:42- Oh yeah, I'm sure he was, I'm sure he was fucking terrible
- 26:45to work with.
- 26:46But, you know, he got some art out of it.
- 26:49And yeah, Shelley DuVall's performance is incredible.
- 26:52So yeah, a great movie.
- 26:55- Yeah, incredible because she actually is being tortured.
- 26:58- Yeah, she's horrified.
- 27:00She's not acting.
- 27:00- She is horrified.
- 27:02- She's horrified at this man.
- 27:03I would be too.
- 27:04I would be too.
- 27:05I actually want to talk about a more modern show
- 27:11that I think is really, really popular now.
- 27:14And such, like, it is an anti-hero.
- 27:18And we've seen so many seasons of this show.
- 27:22But when I think of murderous marriage,
- 27:24I think of you, Joe Goldberg and Love.
- 27:29Yeah, I think of you.
- 27:30- I think of you.
- 27:32- I think of you.
- 27:34- I think Andrew would be more likely to murder me
- 27:36than the other way around.
- 27:37I think he'd just snap one day and be like,
- 27:39I can't take this bitch anymore.
- 27:41- She's thinking about it.
- 27:44She's like, I don't know.
- 27:45- I don't know.
- 27:46- I don't know.
- 27:48- You think of the show you?
- 27:50- Yes, I think of the show at you with Joe Goldberg,
- 27:54which Love Quinn and him, you know,
- 27:57if I was having to say, I woof you every single day,
- 28:02have you never seen the show you?
- 28:03- I don't watch this show.
- 28:05- You've never seen it?
- 28:06- No, I've heard that the first couple seasons
- 28:09are really good and that it kind of falls off on the end.
- 28:11- It does.
- 28:12It does.
- 28:13- How many seasons are there?
- 28:15- I think there's like five now,
- 28:16but the first two seasons are great.
- 28:19- Maybe I'll give it a whirl.
- 28:21I do need a new alone show.
- 28:23- Yeah, he is a stalker and like an obsessive person.
- 28:28And you do not want to vote for him,
- 28:31but you know, Penn Badgerly plays him likable.
- 28:35And but they end up, he ends up meeting Love Quinn,
- 28:40who's in season two, and they are quite murderous together.
- 28:45And so it does become kind of like him meeting his match
- 28:51and things like that.
- 28:52And so when I think of couple who murder together,
- 28:55I always think of you.
- 28:58And you know, you was kind of set in New York City,
- 29:02Los Angeles, then eventually it moves to London.
- 29:06So there are some quite beautiful scenes within it,
- 29:10but it really goes over kind of like the modern day obsession,
- 29:15this man who is completely an inzel and a stalker
- 29:20and uses kind of social media
- 29:22and everything there.
- 29:24He's very like unreliable narrator.
- 29:26- Interesting.
- 29:27- And people like Penn Badgerly is very attractive.
- 29:30So people idolize him and call him hot
- 29:33and are like, are obsessed with Joe.
- 29:34And Penn Badgerly is like, this man is a murderer.
- 29:38You should not lust after him.
- 29:40Like he's a terrible person and all this stuff.
- 29:43- Remember that study that came out,
- 29:45I gosh, it must have been the 80s and 90s,
- 29:47like in real life that people are more likely to trust.
- 29:50Somebody who's good looking.
- 29:52- Tractive, yeah.
- 29:52- And then yeah, conventionally good looking.
- 29:55Like they showed a bunch of pictures to people
- 29:57between a conventionally attractive person
- 29:59and conventionally unattractive person.
- 30:01It was like, who's nicer, who's friendly
- 30:03or who's the better person.
- 30:05And even if you, you know, there's no way of knowing
- 30:08once at the hands and then good looking people.
- 30:12- Yeah, that's why you get like a Ted Bundy, you know?
- 30:15Where people are like, oh, I'm likely to follow
- 30:17the stranger to a car.
- 30:19- Right.
- 30:19- He's attractive.
- 30:20Why would he hurt me?
- 30:21- You actually got me to watch another movie
- 30:24that you reminded me of just then with the killer couples
- 30:27and it was Natural Born Killers.
- 30:29- Oh, oh my God.
- 30:31How did I forget about that?
- 30:32- Yeah.
- 30:33- That wins.
- 30:34That one.
- 30:34That's the number one of most iconic.
- 30:36- Oh my God.
- 30:37Yeah, with Woody Harrelson and Juliet Lewis.
- 30:41So I just watched this maybe for the first time,
- 30:43maybe within the last six months
- 30:44because you told me to watch it.
- 30:46- I can't believe I see a movie.
- 30:49- Literally, if you guys have never seen it,
- 30:52like if you like a trippy, like, like,
- 30:56like almost like Tarantino asks, it's not Tarantino,
- 31:00but it has that like vibe and feel Woody.
- 31:05I almost said Woody Nelson.
- 31:07(laughing)
- 31:08- It'd be sick of Woody Nelson starting the remake
- 31:11of this movie.
- 31:11- Yeah, he can be in a lot of--
- 31:13- He can be in a lot of life being remake
- 31:14of Mrs. Smith.
- 31:15- Yeah, we'll just murch 'em by pushing 'em over.
- 31:19- We murdered Woody Nelson.
- 31:20- Willie Nelson, not Woody Nelson.
- 31:22- There we go, fuck.
- 31:23(laughing)
- 31:25(screaming)
- 31:27You know, it's after work today.
- 31:30- Yeah, listen, it's been a long four year.
- 31:32- Yeah, Woody Harrelson and it is so hot.
- 31:36- Oh, he's very hot.
- 31:37- Yeah.
- 31:38So it was Juliet Lewis.
- 31:39She's super hot in this too.
- 31:40- Yeah, they're both so big.
- 31:41- Also saying toologist though.
- 31:43- I don't love that about her.
- 31:44- I know.
- 31:45- I'm like, she is and she's so iconic.
- 31:48She was kind of raised in it.
- 31:50She's so iconic and I fucking hate that she's a Scientologist
- 31:53because I'm like, you know me, you know me.
- 31:56You can't even support Will Smith anymore
- 31:58because of that.
- 31:59- No.
- 32:00- Juliet, she's out now.
- 32:02I don't think she's like super publicly distancing herself
- 32:06or like talking bad about the church,
- 32:08but she's out now.
- 32:10- She's not in church anymore.
- 32:12- No, but she was a Scientologist.
- 32:13- She's a Scientologist.
- 32:14- We need you to go and call her daddy
- 32:16and talk about like leaving the church
- 32:18and then we'll like you again.
- 32:20- But she's like one of those celebrities
- 32:22who is like her whole family's in there.
- 32:25So like a lot of the time they'll let like,
- 32:28what's the 70s show, Laura, whatever name is?
- 32:31- Oh, Laura, Pupon, Pupon, Pupon, Pupon, Pupon, Pupon.
- 32:36- Pupon, Pupon.
- 32:39- Pion.
- 32:40- Laura, tampon.
- 32:41- We are children.
- 32:44We are children.
- 32:46- Yeah.
- 32:46You know, so she, they let her like kind of quiet exit
- 32:51from Scientology if they didn't want like a Leah Remny.
- 32:54- Yeah, they didn't want another Leah Remny situation
- 32:57where she does a tell all novel and like spills all their tea.
- 33:00- Yes, but honestly, I'm so mad at myself
- 33:03that I didn't think of natural born killers.
- 33:05- You're welcome.
- 33:06- So that's so good.
- 33:07Yeah, thank you.
- 33:08- Yeah.
- 33:09- Thank you.
- 33:09- I mean, I'm sure there are so many different,
- 33:12you know, murderous couples and murder that happens
- 33:16in a marriage that we miss that we didn't talk about.
- 33:20So if you do have one that you love, shoot us a DM
- 33:25and follow us on Patreon and join the discussion there.
- 33:29We also have a community that you can join.
- 33:32But you know, there are so many different movies
- 33:36and things coming out right now that we've seen.
- 33:39We also have like splitsville where chaos ensues
- 33:42within a marriage.
- 33:44- I just thought of another one.
- 33:45Ready or not.
- 33:46- Oh, yes.
- 33:48- Yeah.
- 33:49- I love that movie.
- 33:51And aren't they making a sequel already?
- 33:54- They are.
- 33:54- Yes, they are.
- 33:55- I think Sarah Michelle Geller is in it.
- 33:57I love that movie.
- 33:58So that came out in the last at least five years or so
- 34:01where--
- 34:02- I think it was 2020, yeah.
- 34:03- Yeah, it's been pretty recent where a couple gets married
- 34:06and I won't spoil it 'cause it is more of a new one.
- 34:09And she has to play a very violent game
- 34:12of hide and seek with his entire family.
- 34:14I love that movie.
- 34:15It's chaotic and crazy and bloody.
- 34:19- Literally amazing.
- 34:21- Literally amazing.
- 34:22I'm just gonna keep thinking of more and more.
- 34:24But yeah, we could go on and on about this.
- 34:26(laughing)
- 34:27- Yeah, yeah, right, exactly.
- 34:29- I would do wanna ask though.
- 34:31Olivia, if you were married and you found out
- 34:35your spouse was a killer, how would you react?
- 34:38- Okay, so I haven't thought about it if my spouse was,
- 34:45but I've actually had this conversation before
- 34:48about if you figured out that your child murdered someone,
- 34:53let's say like on accident,
- 34:56would you cover it up?
- 34:58And I have thought about it and I'm like, yes, I would.
- 35:02- Okay, Jean-Bene's mom, shit.
- 35:05- No, I'm not murdering the child.
- 35:07I'm saying my child murdered someone.
- 35:09- Jean-Bene's brother killed her.
- 35:11- Oh, okay.
- 35:12- And then Axi Ram's never dead up.
- 35:13- No, I'm not talking allegedly.
- 35:16- Yeah, okay, no, I'm not talking about
- 35:18if my child murdered my other child.
- 35:20I'm saying if my child murdered a different kid, right?
- 35:25- Okay.
- 35:26- And then when I was on accident, would I cover it up?
- 35:29Yeah.
- 35:30- You would.
- 35:31- But it had to be an accident.
- 35:33Like if I thought my kid was like a fucking serial killer,
- 35:36like no.
- 35:37- Oh, put them away, dude.
- 35:38The minute my kid starts doing serial killer shit,
- 35:41I'm like calling, like somebody come and get this thing
- 35:44out of my house.
- 35:44- Yeah.
- 35:45- Like this kid just killed a rabbit.
- 35:47No, out out of the house, you're out.
- 35:49But Andrew and I have talked about this.
- 35:53And I think it just depends on the situation.
- 35:55Like if he killed someone in self-defense, that's fine.
- 35:57I did tell him he's allowed to murder a man,
- 36:01but he's not allowed to murder any women.
- 36:03- Okay, I met any man for any reason,
- 36:09or in self-defense.
- 36:10- No, it's not for, in self-defense,
- 36:13or if I provide him a name.
- 36:15- What if it, okay.
- 36:16(laughing)
- 36:18- Then it's fine.
- 36:19- What if it's like a murky self-defense?
- 36:21And like if you just told him that,
- 36:23is any gonna say like all of them are self-defense?
- 36:25Wouldn't anybody who gets caught for murder?
- 36:28- Yeah, I mean, I'd be fine.
- 36:29Unless it was a woman, don't kill a woman.
- 36:34But I was right, draw the line.
- 36:36Don't kill a child. - Okay, even in self-defense.
- 36:39- No, let her take you down.
- 36:41- Okay.
- 36:42- Yeah, let her win, let her win.
- 36:45Good for her.
- 36:45- She had a reason.
- 36:46I'm sure she had a good reason.
- 36:48But yeah, I guess it's nuanced.
- 36:50- Would you help them cover it up,
- 36:52even if you said it was in self-defense,
- 36:55or would you be like, we're going to the cops?
- 36:56- This entire podcast episode is gonna incriminate me
- 37:00someday.
- 37:00Someday is gonna come back.
- 37:02I don't know.
- 37:03- Who's murdering?
- 37:04- I don't know.
- 37:05- What?
- 37:06- Madda.
- 37:06- I don't know.
- 37:07- What?
- 37:08- Madda.
- 37:09- He's a nice guy.
- 37:11- What?
- 37:12- Madda.
- 37:13- Yeah.
- 37:14(laughing)
- 37:15- This is psych-ethetical.
- 37:16I have no child nor husband, so.
- 37:19I think it depends on the situation.
- 37:22If he hypothetically killed someone who was on my list,
- 37:26somebody that we all want to see pass away,
- 37:32then yes, I would probably help him cover up the scene.
- 37:35- In that case, are you like helping him cover up
- 37:38an assassination?
- 37:39What's going on here?
- 37:40- Right.
- 37:41- What?
- 37:43That's not what I'm insinuating.
- 37:45Am I insinuating?
- 37:46Are you?
- 37:47'Cause I'm not.
- 37:48I wouldn't have.
- 37:49- I don't know.
- 37:50She's making a list, checking it twice,
- 37:52but I'll watch out.
- 37:53- I have, listen, I have a purge list.
- 37:55It's fine.
- 37:56- Andrew is a little short, so not scenario is he and elf?
- 38:00- Why does he need to be an elf to commit murder?
- 38:04- 'Cause I said she's making a list, she's checking it twice.
- 38:06- Oh!
- 38:07- So.
- 38:08- It's like, what the fuck does Andrew being an elf
- 38:11have to do with him committing an assassination?
- 38:14(laughing)
- 38:18- He needs to be.
- 38:19- Okay, you know what, that's better.
- 38:20If Andrew is a mythical creature,
- 38:22and it comes in an elf, a queen for a creature,
- 38:24I'm a mythical queen for a creature.
- 38:27And he's an elf.
- 38:30Then yes, political assassinations about.
- 38:33- Okay.
- 38:34Just no women, okay.
- 38:35Just no women, no women.
- 38:37- So my answer is, I feel like, if it were my child,
- 38:42yes, if it were my husband, no.
- 38:45'Cause I'd be like, you.
- 38:47(laughing)
- 38:50Like, you'd probably have to be like,
- 38:52it was an accident, and then would I really believe it?
- 38:55And then in my mind, I'd be like, they're gonna murder me.
- 38:58- Um, yeah, see that's why it couldn't be a woman.
- 39:02Like, it couldn't be a woman.
- 39:03But like, if your husband like,
- 39:05Luigi'd someone, I'll just say it.
- 39:07I'll just say it, if your husband will be
- 39:10- Okay.
- 39:11- So the only murder you're accepting is assassination.
- 39:15But I will accept if Andrew decides he wants to go full Luigi
- 39:20Wahoo.
- 39:22- Okay, you're gonna be a pro-indulgent.
- 39:23- Hypnotically, hypothetically.
- 39:24- Hypnotically.
- 39:25- Okay, if you're gonna do it.
- 39:26- If I murdered someone, would you forgive me?
- 39:31- Maybe.
- 39:36- Come.
- 39:37- It's better than the immediate know for the husband.
- 39:40- That's fair, that's fair.
- 39:41- Yeah.
- 39:43- I think we'd have to have the terms.
- 39:45- Yeah.
- 39:46- I wouldn't help you bury the body.
- 39:48- Okay.
- 39:49- But like, I wouldn't ask questions.
- 39:51- You wouldn't, would you?
- 39:53You wouldn't ask questions.
- 39:54I feel like I might help you bury a body.
- 39:57But again, it depends on who he was.
- 40:00'Cause it's a geek.
- 40:01- Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 40:02I'm not murdering women.
- 40:03What about a monster?
- 40:04- No.
- 40:05- Jesus Christ.
- 40:06- We were really deep into this.
- 40:10- We were really deep into this.
