- 0:00Psalm 23 Dear Lord, as we read through this, please ignite our
- 0:07spirit. You know, let us understand who
- 0:10you are. As David has expressed through
- 0:12the Psalm, we ask this in Jesus name.
- 0:15It says, I guess just to start, the personal name of God is used
- 0:23in the Psalm. So it would be YHWH.
- 0:28Every time I say Lord, that's what it would be in the Hebrew,
- 0:33the original Hebrew. So I'll just get started and
- 0:36read through this and then go through the study Bible
- 0:38questions and answers on this Psalm.
- 0:42The Lord is my shepherd. I lack nothing.
- 0:45He makes me lie down in green pastures.
- 0:48He leads me beside quiet waters. He refreshes my soul.
- 0:52He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake.
- 0:56Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil,
- 1:01for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they
- 1:05comfort me. You prepare a table before me in
- 1:09the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil.
- 1:14My cup overflows, surely your goodness and love will follow me
- 1:19all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the House of the
- 1:24Lord forever. So the questions and answers
- 1:29from the Study Bible are how does God refresh our souls?
- 1:32David painted a picture of sheep being nourished with food and
- 1:36water. In the same way, God nourishes
- 1:39us spiritually and emotionally. His loving care puts our minds
- 1:44at ease so we can rest peacefully.
- 1:47To be refreshed means to be restored and strengthened.
- 1:51How does God guide us? God does not reveal every detail
- 1:55of His plan for our lives. Nevertheless, there is an inner
- 2:00assurance that comes when we do His will.
- 2:03Developing a close, dependent relationship with the Lord will
- 2:08help us follow His way. And if we do the things we know
- 2:11God wants us to do, we'll discover more details about His
- 2:15will for us. How could God's rod and staff
- 2:19bring comfort? The shepherd used his staff to
- 2:22guide the sheep, directing them and setting boundaries for them.
- 2:27He used his rod as a weapon against predators by guiding
- 2:31them into safe places and fighting off their enemies.
- 2:34The shepherd's rod and staff were a comfort to the sheep.
- 2:39Why prepare a meal in the presence of enemies?
- 2:43This picture may be understood as #1A description of God's
- 2:48protection and power, as David could feast in safety and
- 2:52security even though he was surrounded by enemies or two.
- 2:57A victory feast at which David celebrated the defeat of his
- 3:01enemies, who were prisoners without weapons and no longer
- 3:05dangerous. And that concludes Psalm 23.
