- 2:06Speaker 3: I would like to present what I believed to be
- 2:09Speaker 3: one of the three faith in volumes of the Tour
- 2:12Speaker 3: of Demote, the Book of the Dead. My texts today
- 2:20Speaker 3: are revealed that its findings are made of pure human
- 2:23Speaker 3: bless its passages and ants ached in blood. I seek
- 2:29Speaker 3: Church approval to translate the spiritual mysteries it's painted. Undoubtedly
- 2:34Speaker 3: when all the book reader, I seek to look at
- 2:40Speaker 3: this book for the.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Good of man. Welcome back to staff Picks. This is
- 3:08Speaker 4: the Beyond the Blood kind of spin off show, I
- 3:11Speaker 4: would say, where we kind of dissect and hop into
- 3:14Speaker 4: some of our favorite horror movies without the commentary tracks
- 3:17Speaker 4: and all that. We leave all that behind for the
- 3:19Speaker 4: big episodes, and these are just kind of movies that
- 3:22Speaker 4: we want to bullshit about with some friends. So, as always,
- 3:26Speaker 4: my name is Chris. I'm the Beard of Film Guy,
- 3:29Speaker 4: joined here by my very handsome, freshly showered co host
- 3:33Speaker 4: Steve from.
- 3:33Speaker 5: After Hours video What's Happening Guys?
- 3:36Speaker 4: So, I didn't mean to put your business out there
- 3:38Speaker 4: about the shower situation.
- 3:39Speaker 5: No, it's okay, it's okay. It's uh, you know rebirth right, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 5: Reawakening it is.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Yeah. I don't know if people know this. I know
- 3:51Speaker 4: people know a lot about us from the show, but
- 3:53Speaker 4: I'm sure people don't know that you and I are
- 3:55Speaker 4: actually neighbors. We live together in an LA high rise.
- 4:00Speaker 4: I don't know why we record from several rooms when
- 4:03Speaker 4: we're right next to each other, but we're on the
- 4:05Speaker 4: eighth floor. I'm apartment eighty three, you're apartment eighty four,
- 4:09Speaker 4: right next to each other. It's a shock that people
- 4:11Speaker 4: haven't known that. But I decided for this episode that
- 4:16Speaker 4: we needed a couple other neighbors. See, there was an earthquake.
- 4:20Speaker 4: We're kind of stuck. I don't know what happened to
- 4:21Speaker 4: stairs fell apart, elevators, you know, acting up. So if
- 4:26Speaker 4: we if we hung out with a couple other neighbors today,
- 4:29Speaker 4: what do you think?
- 4:29Speaker 5: Absolutely, I'm here for it.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Okay. So one of our neighbors, he's the furthest neighbor.
- 4:35Speaker 4: He's all the way down, way down the hall. It's
- 4:37Speaker 4: actually a different time zone. It's a part making is
- 4:42Speaker 4: Beyond the Blood premiere Chris from Que the credits, what's
- 4:46Speaker 4: up man?
- 4:47Speaker 6: Hello? Both? How are you this evening? This morning? Actually?
- 4:51Speaker 7: Now is this morning down this side of the whole way? Yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 7: you could say it's a yeah, it's a totally differ
- 5:00Speaker 7: come to it.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Yeah, it feels that it takes it takes so long
- 5:03Speaker 4: to walk to your apartment. Sometimes pack just sometimes packages
- 5:08Speaker 4: get delivered to my door and unfortunately I got to
- 5:10Speaker 4: bring them all the way to you. And it's a
- 5:12Speaker 4: far far walk.
- 5:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:14Speaker 7: Absolutely, it'd be terrible if, like, you know, the lift
- 5:17Speaker 7: went out or anything like that.
- 5:19Speaker 4: So yeah, that would that would that would be the
- 5:21Speaker 4: worst situation ever. But good for us, we have another
- 5:24Speaker 4: neighbor who so close that that I can just endlessly
- 5:29Speaker 4: exchange titles with And uh, this is his return to
- 5:33Speaker 4: the podcast, Rob me from Miles of Horror. What's up man?
- 5:36Speaker 8: What's going on?
- 5:37Speaker 4: Guys?
- 5:37Speaker 8: How's everything?
- 5:39Speaker 4: It's good? I mean, our building is getting you know,
- 5:41Speaker 4: destroyed in a month, so we all got to find
- 5:42Speaker 4: a place to live. But yeah, much.
- 5:45Speaker 8: I gotta say, you nail the intro, Chris Nail, thank you.
- 5:48Speaker 5: I loved it.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Thank you, thank you, thank you. I really appreciate that.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Thank you guys for joining us on staff Picks. Today.
- 5:54Speaker 4: We're talking about twenty twenty three's Evil Dead Rise, hence
- 5:57Speaker 4: the You know, I should have said something about the
- 5:59Speaker 4: parking and the old ass pizza that that the kids
- 6:02Speaker 4: went and got, but yeah, I couldn't find a way
- 6:05Speaker 4: to fit it in.
- 6:05Speaker 5: Naturally, Chris, we're about about to be back on the street.
- 6:08Speaker 5: We're about to be displaced. We have no nowhere to live.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know what to do about that? Man,
- 6:14Speaker 4: I have no I have no solution for us. I mean,
- 6:17Speaker 4: you got y'all want to split a place together. I mean,
- 6:19Speaker 4: in this economy, it kind of seems like the smartest,
- 6:22Speaker 4: smartest way. I think we got to get out of la.
- 6:24Speaker 9: Go into the woods or something like that.
- 6:29Speaker 10: A cabin, Yeah, a cabin wounding a really good idea way, way,
- 6:33Speaker 10: way better than this apartment complex.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Very farmer moved off the beaten path.
- 6:38Speaker 4: One one that shaped like a triangle next to a lake.
- 6:41Speaker 8: Just something super isolated.
- 6:43Speaker 7: Yeah, super, it's got a basement level as well, that
- 6:46Speaker 7: would be yes.
- 6:48Speaker 4: It's got a bit okay, And do you have do
- 6:50Speaker 4: we have to take a bridge to get to like?
- 6:53Speaker 4: Are we we gotta go over a bridge?
- 6:55Speaker 5: I mean it's a jinky ass bridge, but yes, all right, all.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Right, cool. I just I just wanted to make sure
- 7:01Speaker 4: that's all okay. We could we could drop the bit
- 7:04Speaker 4: four minutes in now, so it's previously look, look, I
- 7:15Speaker 4: we we were talking about staff Picks, and we've been
- 7:17Speaker 4: loving to any Staff Picks episode because our episode is
- 7:20Speaker 4: because we don't our normal episodes, we do so much
- 7:22Speaker 4: research into you know, we wanted a chance to talk
- 7:25Speaker 4: about movies much more on a surface level and just
- 7:27Speaker 4: kind of like have great conversation without being you know,
- 7:31Speaker 4: without having to go as deep as we do on
- 7:34Speaker 4: some other stuff. And we were talking about pretty much
- 7:37Speaker 4: all the attention around the Evil Dead franchise right now.
- 7:40Speaker 4: The trailer just came out a few weeks ago for
- 7:41Speaker 4: the upcoming Evil Dead Burn. Francis Gloopy just started production
- 7:46Speaker 4: on Evil Dead Wrath. So there's so much happening in
- 7:50Speaker 4: the Evil Dead universe. Figured it was time to maybe
- 7:53Speaker 4: talk about something a little bit more recent. So Evil
- 7:56Speaker 4: Dead Rise came to mind. And you know, I'm a
- 7:59Speaker 4: fan of this. I I tend to go kind of
- 8:03Speaker 4: up and down with it every time I watch it.
- 8:05Speaker 4: There's something more that I like, but it still kind
- 8:07Speaker 4: of remains in the same place for my ranking of
- 8:10Speaker 4: the franchise, which is strong. By the way, just because
- 8:14Speaker 4: it's lasted, my ranking doesn't mean it's a bad movie.
- 8:16Speaker 4: It's just like the strength of every title in this
- 8:20Speaker 4: franchise it is, you know, all the spots are are
- 8:24Speaker 4: great movies. Chris, what about you? You you reached out
- 8:28Speaker 4: when I was looking for guests for this one. You
- 8:30Speaker 4: were very quick to reach out and say you want
- 8:32Speaker 4: to be on. Tell me about your first experiences with
- 8:34Speaker 4: Evil Dead Rise.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Well, I'm talking. You know what. I was really hyped
- 8:40Speaker 6: about it, and I've just got.
- 8:42Speaker 7: That row four k in from the States with you know,
- 8:46Speaker 7: a small physical media tangent. We don't have a great
- 8:51Speaker 7: transfer over here because it's done by Studio canow So
- 8:55Speaker 7: I've really hyped about that.
- 8:56Speaker 6: And then you know what I rewatched.
- 8:59Speaker 7: Or What The Mummy by Lee Crowding, And then I
- 9:02Speaker 7: rewatched this and I went, is Evil Dead Rise on
- 9:06Speaker 7: the bottom of my Evil Dead list? Like, because you
- 9:10Speaker 7: know what, every film in the franchise is so.
- 9:13Speaker 6: Strong, and I don't get it wrong.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Once again, I love Evil Dead Rise. It's probably the
- 9:20Speaker 7: weakest one. And I got to about an hour in
- 9:23Speaker 7: and I was like, yeah, you know what, it's fun,
- 9:26Speaker 7: but it's not tickling everything that I wanted to tickle
- 9:31Speaker 7: for an Evil Dead film. But then I love the
- 9:33Speaker 7: new setting of it, Like I like the fact that
- 9:36Speaker 7: they went, you know what, actually we've done three three
- 9:41Speaker 7: and a half films.
- 9:43Speaker 9: In the cabin. We're going to mix things up a
- 9:45Speaker 9: little bit.
- 9:46Speaker 7: I think there's a lot of good things about Rise.
- 9:49Speaker 7: There's definitely probably a lot that we're going to get
- 9:52Speaker 7: into that there's some touch points.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I completely agree. I think we feel pretty
- 9:59Speaker 4: much the same way. Robbie. How do you feel about
- 10:01Speaker 4: Evil Dead Rise?
- 10:01Speaker 8: Man?
- 10:02Speaker 4: How's this one aged for you in the three years
- 10:04Speaker 4: believe it or not, since this fucking movie came out?
- 10:08Speaker 8: Yeah? I love Evil Dead Rise.
- 10:11Speaker 9: Man.
- 10:11Speaker 10: I'm a huge, huge, huge fan of the franchise and
- 10:14Speaker 10: I have my ash right here. It's like, it's one
- 10:18Speaker 10: of my favorite franchises, definitely top five all time. And
- 10:23Speaker 10: you know what's so interesting about Rise is that I
- 10:26Speaker 10: feel like a lot of people put twenty thirteen over it,
- 10:30Speaker 10: and I'm the exact opposite. Like Rise, I adored I
- 10:34Speaker 10: thought it was so great. When you get posted you
- 10:36Speaker 10: were looking for people to come on the channel for
- 10:38Speaker 10: this episode. I jumped on it quickly because I have
- 10:42Speaker 10: such a love for this movie and I think it's
- 10:44Speaker 10: so much fun and it really brings me back to
- 10:46Speaker 10: Even though it's not as serious as the original one,
- 10:49Speaker 10: which is my favorite, I really do have such a
- 10:51Speaker 10: love for it. I think it like refreshed the franchise
- 10:54Speaker 10: in such a cool way. So I loved it, man,
- 10:58Speaker 10: I really did I thought it was fantastic turned for franchise,
- 11:01Speaker 10: you know, renewed it, refresh it in my eyes in
- 11:03Speaker 10: so many ways.
- 11:04Speaker 8: So I was stoked to come on and talk about it.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Man, Hell yeah, do well, thank you. I will say
- 11:09Speaker 4: just clear the air Evil Did twenty thirteen is above
- 11:12Speaker 4: this in my ranking, just so you know. It is
- 11:15Speaker 4: not in a scary reveal later on or anything like that.
- 11:20Speaker 8: People love that one.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Man, my trustee co host, tell me about Evil Dead rise, man,
- 11:26Speaker 4: tell me about your love for this movie.
- 11:29Speaker 5: So this is a movie I think, like you guys
- 11:31Speaker 5: were mentioning earlier, I feel like the Evil Dead franchise
- 11:34Speaker 5: as a whole so far is one of the more
- 11:36Speaker 5: consistent franchises with this one, and I feel like it's
- 11:41Speaker 5: been after repeat viewings. I like it, but I don't
- 11:46Speaker 5: love it. I feel like it's a film that while
- 11:49Speaker 5: I definitely see what Lee Cronin was trying to go
- 11:53Speaker 5: for with this film, there's certain elements of it that
- 11:56Speaker 5: I feel like he didn't fully commit to it, especially
- 12:00Speaker 5: off of the twenty thirteen film. I think that's where
- 12:03Speaker 5: and maybe that's unfairly you know, comparing the two, but
- 12:07Speaker 5: there's just certain aspects about it that don't always connect
- 12:10Speaker 5: for me. So yeah, yeah, I'm a little bit more
- 12:14Speaker 5: lukewarm on this one, but I do really enjoy the movie.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I think, and we'll get into it. I definitely
- 12:20Speaker 4: think there's some some holding back of certain things here.
- 12:24Speaker 4: I feel like Evel ad Rise always feels like it's
- 12:27Speaker 4: about to go where I want it to, and then
- 12:29Speaker 4: it kind of exactly that's off the gas a little bit.
- 12:32Speaker 4: But you know, we'll get into all that as we
- 12:34Speaker 4: go on. I am a huge, huge fan of twenty
- 12:38Speaker 4: thirteen's Evil Dead, the original Evil Dead, Evil Dead two.
- 12:43Speaker 4: I think Evil Dead two is technically my favorite of
- 12:46Speaker 4: the bunch, but I kind of lump Evil Dead one
- 12:48Speaker 4: and two in kind of like equal first place because
- 12:52Speaker 4: even at two is just a remake of Evil Dead one.
- 12:54Speaker 4: It's a little sillier, a little more zany, So to me,
- 12:57Speaker 4: they kind of sit in the same spot for me.
- 13:00Speaker 4: I do love the twenty thirteen and it's tough man
- 13:03Speaker 4: like to pick up this franchise. Evil Dead twenty thirteen.
- 13:06Speaker 4: You have what ten years before Rise comes along, and
- 13:10Speaker 4: so much has changed, Like the Horrd landscape changed drastically
- 13:14Speaker 4: in those ten years. Nobody was sure if there was
- 13:19Speaker 4: any interest still in an Evil Dead movie did that
- 13:21Speaker 4: exist at that time? And this movie did really well
- 13:24Speaker 4: enough that now we have two sequels along the way,
- 13:27Speaker 4: and probably even more so depending on how these next
- 13:30Speaker 4: couple movies go. So I'm excited to see where we
- 13:34Speaker 4: go from here. I will say I'm a little worried
- 13:36Speaker 4: about the future of the franchise. I don't know how
- 13:38Speaker 4: you guys felt about the Evil Dead burn trailer, but
- 13:41Speaker 4: I wasn't exactly stoked about it. You guys have any
- 13:45Speaker 4: insights on what you thought about it.
- 13:49Speaker 10: I just think it's so fascinating, like so like back
- 13:53Speaker 10: tracked until like Halloween ends first quick second, Like I
- 13:56Speaker 10: think that movie has such a star contract of like
- 14:00Speaker 10: fang either love it, you hate it, but it's split. Man,
- 14:03Speaker 10: there's a ton of people that love that movie, a
- 14:05Speaker 10: ton of people that hate it. I feel like with
- 14:06Speaker 10: twenty with Evil Dead, I feel like there's a lot
- 14:11Speaker 10: of people love twenty thirteen, and I feel like most
- 14:14Speaker 10: people love twenty thirteen. I just can't get behind it.
- 14:18Speaker 10: I don't know what the infatuation is for that movie.
- 14:21Speaker 10: I don't know why people love that movie. I much
- 14:24Speaker 10: prefer Evil Dead Rise. So when I hear people talk
- 14:26Speaker 10: about twenty thirteen, I just think it's so interesting that
- 14:28Speaker 10: they prefer that one to Rise.
- 14:30Speaker 8: I just think it's interesting, man, Like, it's just not
- 14:32Speaker 8: it wasn't my boty.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I get well, I have I'll have you know
- 14:36Speaker 4: that I tricked you and this is actually a podcast
- 14:40Speaker 4: nice celebrating our love for Evil Dead twenty thirteen. I
- 14:43Speaker 4: hope you know, Chris, did you get a chance to
- 14:45Speaker 4: see the Evil Dead burn trailer and if so, what
- 14:47Speaker 4: were your thoughts on that?
- 14:49Speaker 6: Yeah, so I watched the Red Brand.
- 14:52Speaker 7: So I saw the you know what two minute preview
- 14:56Speaker 7: that they put out before. I think that was in
- 14:58Speaker 7: front of the Mummy actually over here and that cool,
- 15:03Speaker 7: and I was like, right, okay, cool, I'm feeling that vibe.
- 15:06Speaker 7: And then the Red Band came along and I was like,
- 15:09Speaker 7: are we showing a bit too much of this? Like, yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 7: I think I'm picking up what you guys are putting down.
- 15:19Speaker 7: It's very interesting that we went nearly twenty years between
- 15:24Speaker 7: Army of Darkness and then Evil Dead, and then we
- 15:27Speaker 7: had another ten years and then we're like, yeah, you
- 15:30Speaker 7: know what, We'll put another couple out within a couple
- 15:33Speaker 7: of years of Rise and then another one after. Are
- 15:38Speaker 7: we getting it oversaturated like we have got as everyone's
- 15:43Speaker 7: pretty much agreeing nearly a perfect franchise. Is it going
- 15:48Speaker 7: to get ruined by the end of this decade?
- 15:52Speaker 6: Maybe?
- 15:55Speaker 4: Steve, what did you think about the Evil Dead Burne trailer?
- 15:59Speaker 5: I have concerns about it. It. I don't know. I
- 16:07Speaker 5: think that there I was kind of mixed on it,
- 16:09Speaker 5: if I'm being honest, and I kind of echo what
- 16:12Speaker 5: Chris is saying. I do get concerned that we're just
- 16:14Speaker 5: getting oversaturated with Evil Dead films, and hopefully that that's
- 16:19Speaker 5: not the case. I mean, with each of these entries,
- 16:22Speaker 5: I'm cautiously optimistic that each one will bring something different
- 16:26Speaker 5: to the table or enhance the lore in various ways.
- 16:29Speaker 5: I think that's one of the things I can say
- 16:31Speaker 5: about Evil Dead Rise that did do right. But yeah,
- 16:36Speaker 5: I don't know that. I think Chris hit the nail
- 16:38Speaker 5: on the head with his comment about how spaced out
- 16:41Speaker 5: a lot of these films had been previously, and now
- 16:45Speaker 5: in a small matter of time, we're just getting hit
- 16:47Speaker 5: with three films, not back to back, but it feels
- 16:50Speaker 5: like it.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, capitalism is a finicky son. Of a bitch,
- 16:56Speaker 4: you know what I mean, especially when it mixes.
- 16:57Speaker 5: With art.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Anyway.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it kind of reminds me a little bit,
- 17:04Speaker 5: and I hope that that's not the case. Is you
- 17:06Speaker 5: know what happened with Scream what feels like a very
- 17:10Speaker 5: again short period of time, and it just I don't
- 17:13Speaker 5: really have a strong desire to go check on any
- 17:15Speaker 5: more Scream films past this point.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, that's it's hard at this point, man,
- 17:21Speaker 4: because IP is king, Like IP is making money, Horror
- 17:24Speaker 4: is making money, and they're gonna milk these for all
- 17:26Speaker 4: they can. And yeah, I mean I have hope in
- 17:30Speaker 4: in Raymie and Campbell being executive producers on these that
- 17:33Speaker 4: they're at least gonna you know, leave their fingerprint on
- 17:36Speaker 4: it in some way. And I do love that they're
- 17:39Speaker 4: working with smaller directors, lost their known directors and getting
- 17:43Speaker 4: unique visions totally you know, put onto the screen. I
- 17:47Speaker 4: just think that I think that's sometimes it becomes a
- 17:51Speaker 4: little bit much, but I don't want to. I don't
- 17:53Speaker 4: want to go into any future Evil Dead movies with
- 17:56Speaker 4: the thought of, like, I hope this doesn't it because
- 18:00Speaker 4: it could be great, you know what I mean. It
- 18:03Speaker 4: could absolutely be great. There's we saw two and a
- 18:05Speaker 4: half minutes of evil dead burn. It's nothing in representation
- 18:09Speaker 4: for the whole entire movie. So I want to stay
- 18:13Speaker 4: optimistic and and you know, hope that it's really gonna
- 18:17Speaker 4: it's really gonna deliver. Because there was some cool shit
- 18:20Speaker 4: in the trailer, like there was a whole person on
- 18:25Speaker 4: fire putting their hand on something, and then all that
- 18:27Speaker 4: came on fire. I guess that's the burn of it all.
- 18:30Speaker 5: But the one girl drinking the candle wax, Yeah.
- 18:33Speaker 4: You know that's not that's not that scary. That's not
- 18:35Speaker 4: that scary.
- 18:35Speaker 5: I don't know, it's one of my top three fears.
- 18:38Speaker 4: I mean, like cutting your own slicing your own tongue
- 18:41Speaker 4: in half, compared to drinking candle waxes, it's not that scary.
- 18:45Speaker 7: We're diving into something that maybe we shouldn't talk about
- 18:49Speaker 7: in Chris's personal life, with.
- 18:53Speaker 5: Your affinity, whatever goes, whatever goes on behind closed doors.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Listen, you keep my fetishes out of this conversation. Well, listen,
- 19:02Speaker 4: much like a drone over the lake, let's let's let's
- 19:05Speaker 4: fly on to UH to talk about some of the
- 19:07Speaker 4: cast and crew here. Do you guys like that connection
- 19:09Speaker 4: with the Evil Dead Rise there, I actually really did
- 19:11Speaker 4: like watch your face. Even Dead Rise was directed and
- 19:18Speaker 4: written by Lee Cronan.
- 19:19Speaker 10: Uh.
- 19:20Speaker 4: Previous to this he had he had directed The Hole
- 19:22Speaker 4: in the Ground, and then right after this he directed
- 19:25Speaker 4: Lee Cronan is The Mummy a k a. Evil Dead
- 19:28Speaker 4: the Mummy. You have you guys seen either of his
- 19:31Speaker 4: movies around Evil Dead Rise?
- 19:34Speaker 8: Chris gave it, but I heard the Mummy was pretty cool.
- 19:38Speaker 8: My buddy saw it.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Oh we got two people shaking their head, well, one
- 19:42Speaker 4: thumbs down, one shaking their head Chris, what's your what's
- 19:45Speaker 4: your thoughts here?
- 19:50Speaker 6: Right? How long we got? Yeah, I'll top level it.
- 19:57Speaker 6: Why was it over two hours long?
- 19:58Speaker 5: Didn't need to be exactly there?
- 20:01Speaker 6: We go might drop and done because oh go ahead.
- 20:05Speaker 7: I was also the split dope shuts what what like?
- 20:11Speaker 7: Someone someone gave him a director's note and when this
- 20:15Speaker 7: was a really cool Shotley, when you did it three
- 20:19Speaker 7: times in Rise? And then he went, okay, wicked, I'll
- 20:23Speaker 7: do it three times every forty seconds, And it just
- 20:28Speaker 7: it took me out of it so much because I
- 20:30Speaker 7: was like, it's such a rad shot if you use
- 20:35Speaker 7: it sparingly, but there is some cool things, but it
- 20:40Speaker 7: is I think. In my like shorthand review of it,
- 20:44Speaker 7: I was like, did you know that Lee Cronin directed
- 20:46Speaker 7: Evil Dead Rise?
- 20:47Speaker 6: Because we will do after two hours of watching The Mummy?
- 20:52Speaker 4: Ryh is he like jj Abrams with the with the
- 20:56Speaker 4: lens flairs even worse?
- 20:58Speaker 7: Jesus, I'm not even joking. There is one part where
- 21:04Speaker 7: he must use that shot and talking literally now four
- 21:09Speaker 7: times in the space of like two scenes, like a
- 21:15Speaker 7: less quite short scenes. Yeah, it's one of those. It
- 21:20Speaker 7: has the premise for being really good. If they would
- 21:23Speaker 7: have trimmed it down to a tight ninety I reckon it.
- 21:26Speaker 9: Would have been quite a good film.
- 21:27Speaker 4: I agree, Yeah, Steve, what's your thoughts on split diaster shots?
- 21:30Speaker 5: Man?
- 21:31Speaker 4: And was there too many of them in a Mummy?
- 21:33Speaker 5: Oh my god, don't even get me started on this movie. Listen.
- 21:35Speaker 5: It takes a lot for me to like strongly dislike
- 21:38Speaker 5: a movie, and I went into it with at least
- 21:40Speaker 5: an open mind. Obviously, I've seen a lot of great
- 21:43Speaker 5: horror movies and you know, at Chris as you know,
- 21:46Speaker 5: I like a lot of bad ones as well, are
- 21:48Speaker 5: kind of schlocky ones, and man, I'll tell you what
- 21:52Speaker 5: this is, two hours and fourteen minutes. I will never
- 21:54Speaker 5: get back. It was brutal, man, I was checking the time.
- 21:59Speaker 5: I just didn't care for it. And I agree with
- 22:01Speaker 5: what Chris was saying. It's it's a movie that just
- 22:04Speaker 5: felt you start feeling the run time as it goes on.
- 22:08Speaker 5: And that's one thing that I loved about Evil Dead
- 22:10Speaker 5: Rise is that the it didn't overstay. It's welcome, You
- 22:15Speaker 5: got in, you got out. It was there was very
- 22:20Speaker 5: little fat on the movie, whereas, of course Lee's Lee
- 22:24Speaker 5: Cronin's The Mummy just overstate it's welcome. I didn't. I
- 22:29Speaker 5: was not a fan.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Well you just wait, man, because Lee Cronan just announced
- 22:34Speaker 4: the four and a half hour cut of Evil Dead Rise,
- 22:36Speaker 4: so it's called Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rock.
- 22:40Speaker 5: No, all right, let's please return to center.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Probably when was the last time you watched one hundred
- 22:46Speaker 4: and thirty five minute horror movie?
- 22:49Speaker 10: One hundred and thirty five minutes. I'm not great, a Matt.
- 22:51Speaker 10: That's two hours and fourteen minutes.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Either, right, two hours of fifteen minutes.
- 22:55Speaker 8: Fifteen minutes. I watch it every day.
- 22:58Speaker 10: Man, Oh you guys, you will only watch over k
- 23:05Speaker 10: two hour, fifteen minute movies daily.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Every day you watched Mike Flannigan's director's cut of.
- 23:11Speaker 8: Diece I seek Out run times of two hours and
- 23:13Speaker 8: fifteen minutes daily.
- 23:17Speaker 5: Commitment.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Oh my god. Well, this movie was also written by
- 23:20Speaker 4: Lee Cronan, who also wrote The Hole in the Ground
- 23:23Speaker 4: and The Mummy.
- 23:24Speaker 5: Uh.
- 23:24Speaker 4: But Lee Cronan, being a fellow irishman like myself, tends
- 23:29Speaker 4: to work with a lot of the same crew, especially
- 23:31Speaker 4: on these three movies. His cinematographer on this was David Garbette,
- 23:35Speaker 4: who worked on Funny Enough. There. There's kind of some
- 23:38Speaker 4: cross over here with Ashverzu is Evil Dead. He shot
- 23:41Speaker 4: fourteen episodes of ash verdz Is Evil Dead. He also
- 23:43Speaker 4: shot the Mummy, which would make sense because the Mummy
- 23:46Speaker 4: looks exactly like Evil Dead Rise, so perfectly makes sense.
- 23:51Speaker 4: And then the composer here, I'm a huge music movie guy,
- 23:57Speaker 4: Stephen McKeon was the composer here. He also did The
- 24:01Speaker 4: Hole in the Ground and The Mummy and Shocker I did.
- 24:06Speaker 4: I did listen to the Mummy score and it sounds
- 24:09Speaker 4: exactly like Evil Dead Rise. I don't know if if
- 24:14Speaker 4: you're and you guys into the scores of movies. Do
- 24:17Speaker 4: you pay attention to that kind of stuff? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 24:21Speaker 4: did you, Chris, did you notice similarities between the music
- 24:24Speaker 4: of Evil Dead Rise and The Mummy?
- 24:27Speaker 7: Honestly, we we could have just slapped on Evil Dead
- 24:31Speaker 7: like Evil Dead Egypt or something like that, The Pyramids Sarcophagus.
- 24:41Speaker 7: Just marketing team might have to tweak it, but it's yeah,
- 24:47Speaker 7: it's one of those.
- 24:47Speaker 6: I guess.
- 24:48Speaker 7: It feels like the same situation as Resident Evil, or
- 24:53Speaker 7: it could have been if they would have had the rights,
- 24:56Speaker 7: where everyone's like, this doesn't seem like a Resident Evil film.
- 24:59Speaker 7: It's like they've just got his film and then gone, shit,
- 25:03Speaker 7: we need an ip But Resident Evil, yeah, they could
- 25:07Speaker 7: have done this, but they could have done that with
- 25:09Speaker 7: the moment if they have, and that would have been
- 25:12Speaker 7: Evil Dead Wrath. Well.
- 25:15Speaker 4: I will say that the score for Evil Dead Rise
- 25:19Speaker 4: is actually particularly good. It's much more like you know,
- 25:25Speaker 4: I feel like I feel like we're heading back into
- 25:28Speaker 4: a time where we're getting more melodic like theme music
- 25:32Speaker 4: to movies, and Evil Dead Rise has a consistent string
- 25:36Speaker 4: melody that plays throughout it. And I was listening to
- 25:39Speaker 4: this the other day while while setting up my store
- 25:41Speaker 4: at work. And I couldn't help but notice the resemblance
- 25:46Speaker 4: to Christopher Young's score for Hell Raiser, particularly in like
- 25:51Speaker 4: these very Yeah, there's these very like, very subtle, like
- 25:57Speaker 4: string like moments, like in the beginning of the movie,
- 26:00Speaker 4: after the opening scene when they're showing outside the apartment,
- 26:04Speaker 4: you kind of hear that melody happening, and it picks
- 26:06Speaker 4: up multiple times throughout the rest of the score outside
- 26:09Speaker 4: of the incantation moment, which is built into the audio
- 26:13Speaker 4: for the incantation, just built into the score itself. It's
- 26:17Speaker 4: just kind of very it's like noise almost it's string.
- 26:24Speaker 4: It's very very creepy, I will say, just because the
- 26:27Speaker 4: noise is incredibly unsettling, but it doesn't really bring much,
- 26:32Speaker 4: like anything thematic outside of that main theme that we
- 26:36Speaker 4: hear probably five or six times throughout the movie. Still good,
- 26:40Speaker 4: still worth a listen though, But I wanted to bring
- 26:43Speaker 4: up another member of the crew because we have some
- 26:47Speaker 4: more cross over here. Brian Shaw was the editor. He
- 26:50Speaker 4: edited nine episodes of Asters Is Evil Dead. He was
- 26:52Speaker 4: also the editor on Fidey Alvarez's Evil Dead twenty thirteen
- 26:56Speaker 4: as well as The Mummy, So there seems to be
- 26:59Speaker 4: some long standing like Evil Dead credit here, and then
- 27:05Speaker 4: head makeup effects artists on this with somebody named Luke Polty.
- 27:10Speaker 4: He did kind of like headed all the departments. Personally,
- 27:14Speaker 4: I think the makeup effects in this movie when they're
- 27:15Speaker 4: not using c g I are pretty fantastic, you know,
- 27:20Speaker 4: for the most part, when they're not using the egregious CGI.
- 27:28Speaker 4: But aside of that, still very good. What did you
- 27:31Speaker 4: guys think of of the Gore in this movie?
- 27:34Speaker 5: You think it?
- 27:34Speaker 4: You think it? It holds up to the Evil Dead
- 27:36Speaker 4: name we all know.
- 27:37Speaker 7: In love.
- 27:43Speaker 5: I could always use more.
- 27:47Speaker 4: A moment of silence it it pulls back, Like, it
- 27:53Speaker 4: definitely pulls back for sure in the Gore bar.
- 27:56Speaker 8: I mean, I don't know.
- 27:57Speaker 10: If I agree you think it. Like I feel like
- 28:01Speaker 10: the whole ending sequence is blood upon blood.
- 28:03Speaker 5: Yeah, blood.
- 28:05Speaker 10: The scenes with some of the brother and the sister,
- 28:09Speaker 10: like when they you know, when they bite it, Like,
- 28:12Speaker 10: I feel like it's pretty hefty on the Gore.
- 28:14Speaker 4: No, the ending. The ending is definitely pretty and there's
- 28:18Speaker 4: there's some pretty wicked.
- 28:21Speaker 10: Maybe it's more subtle, but like it's it's evil but
- 28:25Speaker 10: more subtle, you know what I mean?
- 28:26Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah, there's it just it makes you feel
- 28:30Speaker 7: more uncomfortable.
- 28:31Speaker 8: Maybe that's what it is.
- 28:32Speaker 7: Yeah, I feel like that's what you got from twenty
- 28:35Speaker 7: thirteen and then this one where it's things that are.
- 28:38Speaker 6: Making you go like oh oh, like I.
- 28:41Speaker 7: Don't want to look at cheese great, like you haven't
- 28:44Speaker 7: had great cheese by hand.
- 28:47Speaker 6: In the house.
- 28:47Speaker 8: I'll say.
- 28:50Speaker 10: Twenty thirteen definitely achieved that, like over that, over Art
- 28:54Speaker 10: and Gore, which is one of the movies like achievements
- 28:57Speaker 10: for sure, Like that's one thing I really did enjoy
- 28:58Speaker 10: about twenty thirteen. In respect to twenty thirteen, I do agree,
- 29:04Speaker 10: like it's not it's not the gore fat that twenty
- 29:06Speaker 10: thirteen was for sure.
- 29:09Speaker 5: I have to give it credit at the very end,
- 29:12Speaker 5: like the blood Elevator and then basically the final sequence.
- 29:19Speaker 5: I would say it ramps things up by quite a bit.
- 29:22Speaker 5: I just wish we would have gotten more of that
- 29:25Speaker 5: earlier on in the movie. I think that that would
- 29:27Speaker 5: have maybe bumped it up a notch my book.
- 29:30Speaker 4: It's funny, man, because when I was watching this with
- 29:33Speaker 4: my wife last night and we saw this in theaters
- 29:35Speaker 4: together she's watched multiple times now, she kind of pointed
- 29:42Speaker 4: out to me I had asked our question, and she
- 29:45Speaker 4: had kind of described Evil Dead Rise more as like
- 29:49Speaker 4: a sequel to Evil Dead twenty thirteen in its style
- 29:53Speaker 4: than a sequel to the original Evil Dead trio. So
- 29:56Speaker 4: she split it up. She was like, Hey, I actually
- 29:58Speaker 4: think like Evil Dead one, Evil Dead two, Army of
- 30:00Speaker 4: Darkness is kind of its own thing, and an Evil
- 30:02Speaker 4: Dead twenty thirteen kind of kicked off a second part.
- 30:06Speaker 4: So this is following much more in net in those
- 30:10Speaker 4: footsteps than it is in the original. And there's moments
- 30:13Speaker 4: in Evil Dead Rise, very small moments that do feel
- 30:17Speaker 4: like kind of callbacks to the kind of campier, a
- 30:22Speaker 4: little bit more wild moments of Evil Dead one and two.
- 30:25Speaker 4: But for the most part, I agree that this feels
- 30:27Speaker 4: very much in the in the style of Evil Dead
- 30:31Speaker 4: twenty thirteen than any other.
- 30:36Speaker 5: I think one of the oh ahelp for it, not
- 30:38Speaker 5: go for it. I was just gonna say, I, speaking
- 30:41Speaker 5: of which, I wonder if Evil Dead Burn is going
- 30:44Speaker 5: to have some correlation with twenty thirteen's remake.
- 30:49Speaker 4: You mean direct correlation, Yeah, to.
- 30:52Speaker 5: A certain extent. It feels like aesthetically and just kind
- 30:55Speaker 5: of some of the things that you see in there,
- 30:56Speaker 5: it seems like they're I don't know if they're like
- 30:58Speaker 5: kind of trying to weave it all together. I don't
- 31:00Speaker 5: know if you guys noticed that, but it seems like
- 31:02Speaker 5: maybe that direction they might be going.
- 31:04Speaker 4: In, which I don't Before I go on about that, Robbie,
- 31:09Speaker 4: did you want to have input on.
- 31:11Speaker 8: I was gonna say.
- 31:11Speaker 10: I think one of the things that I thought was
- 31:15Speaker 10: had so much heart about Rise was the camp, you know,
- 31:18Speaker 10: and it so interesting that you know that your wife
- 31:20Speaker 10: had said that it's almost feels like a new trilogy.
- 31:23Speaker 10: I never really thought about it like that, or a
- 31:25Speaker 10: new kind of like the first three or their own
- 31:27Speaker 10: kind of thing. And then you know, Rise is kind
- 31:29Speaker 10: of like a sequel to twenty thirteen. It makes me
- 31:32Speaker 10: think about it in a different light because the original
- 31:34Speaker 10: one is a more serious film, like you know, the
- 31:37Speaker 10: Orisult Evil did, but it does have that camp element,
- 31:41Speaker 10: but it is still more serious than Evil Dead too,
- 31:45Speaker 10: which was, you know, the a lot more comedic and
- 31:48Speaker 10: the funny movie. But again, like, the reason why I
- 31:52Speaker 10: thought Rise was was so great and so fresh was
- 31:56Speaker 10: because it brought back camp to the franchise, which is
- 31:58Speaker 10: one of the things that makes it so special. In
- 32:00Speaker 10: my opinion, you know, so, uh, twenty thirteen felt to
- 32:05Speaker 10: to like over the top.
- 32:07Speaker 8: To me, It didn't. It lacks heart in my opinion,
- 32:09Speaker 8: you know.
- 32:10Speaker 4: Yeah, well if you don't.
- 32:12Speaker 10: My thing about it like in a new light where
- 32:14Speaker 10: it's like that was a serious one, this is the
- 32:16Speaker 10: campy one, and then who knows what's gonna happen with
- 32:18Speaker 10: you know, with the next one.
- 32:20Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I just want to play Devil's advocate for
- 32:22Speaker 4: a second, because I think I think a lot of times,
- 32:25Speaker 4: like with Camp, I take it more as like, you know,
- 32:29Speaker 4: movies that are played very serious but have have the
- 32:34Speaker 4: ability to be funny without ever like outright saying it's
- 32:39Speaker 4: a comedy, you know what I mean. It's not. It's
- 32:41Speaker 4: not intentionally trying to be comedic, but it just comes
- 32:44Speaker 4: out funny. Evil Dead Rise for me, like, for example,
- 32:48Speaker 4: the moment the moment of Camp, I really think about
- 32:51Speaker 4: that that I would describe as Camp be an evil
- 32:53Speaker 4: Dead Rise is the whole gimmick with the looking through
- 32:57Speaker 4: the people because there's a moment where she's out there
- 33:00Speaker 4: where she you know, bites the one character brips's eye out,
- 33:04Speaker 4: spits out, his eye goes into the throat of another character,
- 33:06Speaker 4: who dies. You know, that feels very much in the
- 33:12Speaker 4: in the Vein of Evil Dead two. My issue with
- 33:16Speaker 4: it is it feels like a moment in the movie
- 33:20Speaker 4: it doesn't feel attached to the rest of it, Like
- 33:23Speaker 4: that stands out as the only moment that's truly that zenie,
- 33:28Speaker 4: whereas everything else seems to be taken much more serious.
- 33:32Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 33:33Speaker 8: Yeah, I do.
- 33:34Speaker 10: I would say I think where the movie goes also
- 33:38Speaker 10: lends a hand to the camp. Like the ending is bananas,
- 33:41Speaker 10: the ending is absolutely crazy and no, and.
- 33:43Speaker 8: The franchise hasn't gone there really at all.
- 33:46Speaker 10: And I guess Army of Darkness kind of brings in
- 33:48Speaker 10: a whole new kind of universe. But I feel like
- 33:50Speaker 10: Where Rise goes simpically. The craziness of the monster in
- 33:55Speaker 10: the end is just so over the top, Like when
- 33:59Speaker 10: that's happening, like this is what I want this, I
- 34:01Speaker 10: want more of this metamorphosis crazy dead eye shit happening,
- 34:06Speaker 10: and that's me was so fresh, you know, that to
- 34:09Speaker 10: me was so original, and it like did all the
- 34:11Speaker 10: things that make the Evil Dead franchise so great. It
- 34:13Speaker 10: had the eye scene, it had the camp which you know,
- 34:15Speaker 10: very Evil Dead too, but it also took it in
- 34:17Speaker 10: a new direction that I loved. You know, I'm not
- 34:19Speaker 10: saying that's like everyone's cupup teas, but I thought like
- 34:21Speaker 10: that felt campy to me, and that felt like new
- 34:24Speaker 10: and fresh, and so yeah, I don't know.
- 34:27Speaker 4: Of course, Yeah, well I felt. I remember seeing this
- 34:31Speaker 4: for the first time and absolutely falling in love with
- 34:34Speaker 4: the whole entire opening sequence. Yeah, just to say at
- 34:39Speaker 4: the top, this movie has the best fucking title sequence
- 34:43Speaker 4: of the entire franchise, possibly of horror in general. It's
- 34:46Speaker 4: definitely up there with one of the best. But I
- 34:49Speaker 4: love that the movie starts with a cabin. It's kind
- 34:53Speaker 4: of calling back totally before you're gonna switch our location
- 34:57Speaker 4: up to something we've never seen in the franchise before.
- 34:59Speaker 4: I I do think.
- 35:03Speaker 5: So.
- 35:03Speaker 4: For Chris, I wanted to bring this up. You have
- 35:05Speaker 4: two split diopter shots just in the opening of the movie. Uh,
- 35:09Speaker 4: you have the fly catcher and then you have the
- 35:12Speaker 4: scalp being dropped on the dock where we have a
- 35:15Speaker 4: split diapter going on. I just want to call those
- 35:17Speaker 4: out for you specifically, because I knew you would love those. Yeah,
- 35:24Speaker 4: I never knew. I never put together until this year
- 35:27Speaker 4: that Weathering Heights and Evil Dead we're going to co
- 35:31Speaker 4: exist because she's actually reading reading Weathering Heights. That's the
- 35:34Speaker 4: book she's reading during this attack sequence. Who knew that
- 35:38Speaker 4: she was reading about Jacob ALORDI fucking Margot Robbie. But yeah, hey,
- 35:44Speaker 4: here we are. This whole entire opening sequence to me
- 35:48Speaker 4: is incredible. I love the bit with the drone to
- 35:50Speaker 4: her own face, throwing her into the river. I love
- 35:53Speaker 4: the de scalping the title sequence. What did you guys
- 35:56Speaker 4: think about the whole opening sequence in general? Do you
- 35:58Speaker 4: think it kicked it off in the right direct Yeah,
- 36:02Speaker 4: big dumbs up. Oh yeah, for sure.
- 36:04Speaker 5: Man.
- 36:04Speaker 10: It was as creepy as hell, then absolutely creepy as
- 36:07Speaker 10: all hell. And I think they brought it right back
- 36:09Speaker 10: to that cabin. It's like, all right, we're back in
- 36:11Speaker 10: the universe, and then it flipped it onto head.
- 36:13Speaker 8: I thought it was awesome.
- 36:15Speaker 7: Yeah, And you know what, because when I saw it
- 36:20Speaker 7: in cinemas, I had no idea about the film. I
- 36:25Speaker 7: was just like, oh, sick, it's just new Evil Dead film.
- 36:28Speaker 7: It came out while we were moving house or something,
- 36:30Speaker 7: so didn't see any trailers. So I went in and
- 36:32Speaker 7: I was like Okay, this feels familiar, and then that
- 36:36Speaker 7: happens and you're like, what's going on? And then oh, right, okay,
- 36:38Speaker 7: we're doing a cutback, and then you're just like.
- 36:42Speaker 9: Oh this is this is brand new.
- 36:45Speaker 7: So it has that benefit, especially now people blind watching
- 36:51Speaker 7: it just going oh, I'm wanting to go through the
- 36:52Speaker 7: Evil Dead franchise. That it really makes you feel comfortable
- 36:58Speaker 7: and then just takes you straight into a different, different
- 37:01Speaker 7: the ether of us either of us.
- 37:04Speaker 4: And I do love the wrap around beginning ending the
- 37:07Speaker 4: movie ends with what happened before the beginning of the movie.
- 37:11Speaker 4: I thought that was very good. Yeah, it's a great touch.
- 37:16Speaker 4: I can't talk enough. I just want to talk again
- 37:18Speaker 4: about the opening title sequence because that's so fucking cool.
- 37:21Speaker 4: Her coming out of the water. I love the way
- 37:23Speaker 4: it's shot to where they kind of focus on the
- 37:25Speaker 4: foot rising and then it goes at wide of her
- 37:28Speaker 4: coming up with the title sequence. Super great. The apartment
- 37:33Speaker 4: complex such a smart, such a smart idea for isolating
- 37:42Speaker 4: a cast of characters. They're on I assume. The only
- 37:45Speaker 4: reason I assume they're on the eighth floor is because
- 37:47Speaker 4: they're in apartment eighty four, and in typical I believe
- 37:51Speaker 4: high rise apartments. The first number is to your floor,
- 37:55Speaker 4: so I assume they're on the eighth floor. Taking out
- 37:58Speaker 4: the staircase. The elevator goes down for a bit, you
- 38:01Speaker 4: have a storm that knocks out all the power. I
- 38:04Speaker 4: love the building of the story that the department's going
- 38:08Speaker 4: to get knocked down, so it's not in great shape.
- 38:10Speaker 4: It's not being maintained. On top of that, I think
- 38:13Speaker 4: this movie does really good at setting up a very
- 38:17Speaker 4: lovable family of characters for us to attach to that
- 38:23Speaker 4: feel real in the sense that there is some disconnection
- 38:27Speaker 4: and some agreements between all of them. You can tell
- 38:29Speaker 4: the there's hardship, but also the movie does a great
- 38:32Speaker 4: job at making us care for the family and care
- 38:35Speaker 4: for the relationship that they all have for each other.
- 38:38Speaker 4: And I think it's really strong, especially especially with the
- 38:40Speaker 4: return of If I can get my no, It's up,
- 38:44Speaker 4: I accidentally close with the return of Beth to the family.
- 38:50Speaker 4: She is a guitar tech. She gets called a GROUPI
- 38:53Speaker 4: a whole bunch of times. She's a guitar tech. She
- 38:57Speaker 4: returns to her sister's home in this apartment complex right
- 39:00Speaker 4: before the series events kicks off. Her sister lives with
- 39:04Speaker 4: her three kids. You have Bridget, Danny, and Cassie. Cassie
- 39:07Speaker 4: being the youngest, I assume. I can't tell if Bridget
- 39:11Speaker 4: or Danny who's older, but they're the two oldest siblings.
- 39:16Speaker 4: Danny is a DJ and aspiring DJU. Bridget loves protests,
- 39:20Speaker 4: That's what she's trying to go to, you know, she
- 39:22Speaker 4: needs her shirt for her favorite protest. And then Cassie
- 39:25Speaker 4: is a fucking freak. She she's a maniac, dude. She's
- 39:33Speaker 4: out here, She's out here talking about ghosts and all
- 39:37Speaker 4: kinds of stuff. Dude. She is such a cool character.
- 39:40Speaker 6: But just remember she won't get in the water.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Yeah, there is a lion. At least she's got to
- 39:47Speaker 4: put on goggles. You gotta check first man. Because she
- 39:49Speaker 4: was once sung by a jellyfish.
- 39:52Speaker 6: I get it. I get it.
- 39:54Speaker 10: So my favorite part about her is that she was
- 39:57Speaker 10: in Stranger Things And yeah, yeah, I.
- 39:59Speaker 8: Like, I didn't.
- 40:00Speaker 10: I didn't remember until I rewatched this, and I watched
- 40:03Speaker 10: The Arrow four K few weeks ago and I didn't
- 40:05Speaker 10: even realize I watched it.
- 40:07Speaker 8: But very cool.
- 40:08Speaker 4: Yeah at the moment, yeah, we watched this, uh not
- 40:11Speaker 4: before we decided to do this episode and I was like, Oh,
- 40:13Speaker 4: it's a girl from Stranger Things, you know, in that
- 40:16Speaker 4: terrible final season. Yeah yeah, is this a Stranger Things podcast?
- 40:27Speaker 4: So I want to talk real quick about probably one
- 40:30Speaker 4: of the one of the absolute standout performances in here,
- 40:34Speaker 4: Alyssa Sutherland, who plays Ellie, our matriarch of the family.
- 40:38Speaker 4: The the explosion that she had on the convention circuit
- 40:43Speaker 4: after this movie came out was just absolutely incredible to see.
- 40:48Speaker 4: It was great that she had a role with this
- 40:49Speaker 4: really you know, flexed some of her abilities to be
- 40:54Speaker 4: absolutely so fucking scary. She as the primary dead eighte
- 41:01Speaker 4: in this film is arguably one of the scariest of
- 41:04Speaker 4: the entire franchise. Like the entire sequence with the bathtub,
- 41:12Speaker 4: the sequence with her I love the neighbor closing her
- 41:15Speaker 4: eyes when I think she's dead and I'm shooting back
- 41:17Speaker 4: open and then closing the eyelids and they shoot back
- 41:19Speaker 4: open again. She is phenomenal, and it's it's such a great.
- 41:24Speaker 11: Move to to create an Evil Dead movie where you
- 41:28Speaker 11: kill off the mother care or not kill off the
- 41:31Speaker 11: mother character, but your mother character is your primary villain.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Let's just say, what did you guys think of as
- 41:37Speaker 4: the Sutherland in this role.
- 41:40Speaker 5: Yeah, which she's like a standout for sure. Yeah.
- 41:45Speaker 10: I think just hearing you kind of go through some
- 41:47Speaker 10: of the things like the eyes and the bathtub, it
- 41:50Speaker 10: brings me back into the movie and like again, like
- 41:54Speaker 10: what a reason to love this movie, you know, like
- 41:56Speaker 10: she like again, I hate to keep doing this like
- 41:59Speaker 10: twenty thirteen Verse Rise, but she's she makes the movie
- 42:04Speaker 10: into something so much better, you know, and she brings
- 42:07Speaker 10: such a different like levity to the movie whereas you know,
- 42:11Speaker 10: I just she just absolutely murdered it. And like the
- 42:13Speaker 10: little things, the eye, the back of the things play
- 42:16Speaker 10: a big role in the movie. You know. It's that's
- 42:18Speaker 10: a vibe, it' that's a tone, and it just brought
- 42:21Speaker 10: such a magic for me for evil that arise, and
- 42:23Speaker 10: she it's a lot of it's because of her one
- 42:25Speaker 10: hundred percent.
- 42:27Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, I think.
- 42:29Speaker 7: As well the whole sequence around the people as well,
- 42:34Speaker 7: where pretty much she's carrying that like and you're just
- 42:38Speaker 7: getting reactions from the other characters. And the way she
- 42:43Speaker 7: switches like the yeah, she switches the dead eye to
- 42:49Speaker 7: the mom and then.
- 42:50Speaker 9: Back and forth.
- 42:52Speaker 7: It's just it's so captivating and you kind of understand
- 42:56Speaker 7: why Cassie would fall for it, because I'm like, oh, con,
- 43:00Speaker 7: you're talking about.
- 43:00Speaker 10: The dool and you know, are just so unsettling and
- 43:06Speaker 10: so unnerving, but also like creepy and funny, Like it
- 43:10Speaker 10: brings about so many emotions that you just absolutely murdered it.
- 43:14Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think we you know, we put a
- 43:16Speaker 4: lot of you know, we put a lot of faith
- 43:19Speaker 4: in mother characters on screen, right because they're protectors and
- 43:25Speaker 4: there this movie just completely strips all of that away endlessly,
- 43:29Speaker 4: which is one of the big themes that I want
- 43:31Speaker 4: to bring up with you guys about this movie in general.
- 43:34Speaker 4: I kind of did some digging on Reddit in some
- 43:37Speaker 4: various forums because I really wanted to find kind of
- 43:39Speaker 4: like what are people talking about this movie as far
- 43:42Speaker 4: as thematic material goes, Like where are there discussions around
- 43:48Speaker 4: you know, some of the more interesting stuff here. And
- 43:50Speaker 4: most of it was based around parental burnout, corruption of
- 43:56Speaker 4: maternal instinct, Like there's so much of it that that
- 44:00Speaker 4: really kind of as I was reading some of these
- 44:04Speaker 4: insights and some of these essays that I found were
- 44:07Speaker 4: things that I thought about last night during my watch,
- 44:10Speaker 4: but not to the level that that some other people
- 44:12Speaker 4: kind of broke it down, and I figured, like we
- 44:14Speaker 4: can chat about some of these because the first one
- 44:17Speaker 4: that I found, which I'm not a parent, I don't.
- 44:21Speaker 4: I don't, I don't have children. I have a dog
- 44:23Speaker 4: and a cat. And if that's any indicator to the
- 44:26Speaker 4: stress and the burnout that she's experienced, she experiences, I
- 44:30Speaker 4: fully understand. Same with Steve and his chickens and his dogs.
- 44:34Speaker 4: I know that he gets very upset about with them
- 44:37Speaker 4: at time to time, Right, Steve.
- 44:39Speaker 5: They can literally drive you till the edge, I swear.
- 44:44Speaker 4: But one of the big ones, the first one that
- 44:45Speaker 4: I read, which is pretty much I think the central
- 44:47Speaker 4: weight of the movie lies with Ellie, and the person
- 44:52Speaker 4: who wrote this article basically said that her possession acts
- 44:55Speaker 4: as a visceral, hyper violent metaphor for extreme parental burnout.
- 45:00Speaker 4: The exhausted, isolated mother, stretched past her breaking point by
- 45:03Speaker 4: caring for three kids in a crumpling apartment transforms into
- 45:06Speaker 4: a deadite who torments her own children. The entity's taunts
- 45:10Speaker 4: about being freed from the quote titty sucking parasites articulate
- 45:14Speaker 4: the suppressed resentment, isolation, and claustrophobia that cand accompany. Relentless motherhood.
- 45:22Speaker 4: I definitely, I definitely see where this is going, and
- 45:26Speaker 4: it's very on the nose. The movies very on the
- 45:29Speaker 4: nose about that with the titty sucking parasite quote. What
- 45:33Speaker 4: do you guys think about that as a theme. You
- 45:35Speaker 4: think that resonates here? Anybody? Nobody?
- 45:42Speaker 5: I mean, I feel like the motherhood concept definitely definitely
- 45:46Speaker 5: gets flipped on its head. You know, it's supposed to
- 45:48Speaker 5: be like a safe space instead. I mean, she's easily
- 45:53Speaker 5: probably one of the creepiest you know, deadites that we
- 45:55Speaker 5: get throughout the entire series. So I definitely could echo
- 45:59Speaker 5: that statement in that regards.
- 46:02Speaker 10: And just to add on, you know, I think like
- 46:05Speaker 10: one of the things the film does so well is
- 46:08Speaker 10: which is totally new and fresh the franchise, also is
- 46:12Speaker 10: it introduces kids to the franchise right like you know,
- 46:16Speaker 10: every other every movie that came before at Barring Army
- 46:21Speaker 10: was teamed right and teens isolated. Whatever this one there
- 46:27Speaker 10: are teens again. I don't know how old the two
- 46:30Speaker 10: older kids are. They're probably about fifteen or so, i'd say,
- 46:33Speaker 10: And you know, young Cassie is a kid, So it
- 46:37Speaker 10: really it brings about the kids into the franchise, and
- 46:40Speaker 10: it brings about this whole new level of fear, right,
- 46:43Speaker 10: It's whole new level of child fear and all this.
- 46:46Speaker 10: And I think when you have a mother character doing that,
- 46:49Speaker 10: it just it reinvigorates a lot of the horror.
- 46:52Speaker 8: And I think I think that spot on that, you know,
- 46:54Speaker 8: that the idea of.
- 46:58Speaker 10: A mother horror here playing a big role and as
- 47:00Speaker 10: a metaphor for being a parent and the difficulties of
- 47:04Speaker 10: being a parent. And yeah, I totally think that that's
- 47:07Speaker 10: that's feasible for sure.
- 47:10Speaker 4: It's the twisting of it as well. It's the fact
- 47:12Speaker 4: that she uses the maternal connection between her kids too, essentially,
- 47:18Speaker 4: especially with Cassie. The moment when Cassie goes to the
- 47:21Speaker 4: door after the mom is singing and the mom's asking her,
- 47:24Speaker 4: you know, let her in. Me and Daddy we're going
- 47:26Speaker 4: to get back together. He's right out here.
- 47:29Speaker 5: You know.
- 47:29Speaker 4: She really leverages that with intent of doing harm, killing
- 47:34Speaker 4: her and you know, putting a deadite inside of her.
- 47:38Speaker 4: It's really scary, man. And I could definitely see a
- 47:41Speaker 4: movie like this resonating different with a parent rather than
- 47:46Speaker 4: myself somebody who doesn't have any kids. And I'm really
- 47:49Speaker 4: curious now to kind of reach out and find somebody
- 47:52Speaker 4: who is a parent's office to see if they kind
- 47:53Speaker 4: of maybe got a different, a different total feeling out
- 47:57Speaker 4: of this one.
- 47:57Speaker 5: You know, well, I think it's I think it's fascinating
- 48:04Speaker 5: because it's such a stark contrast that we get with Beth,
- 48:07Speaker 5: where she has her own apprehensions about you know, eventually
- 48:10Speaker 5: becoming a mother and her doubting herself, and yet you know,
- 48:14Speaker 5: she's seeing this very situation happen with her sister unfold.
- 48:19Speaker 5: I think it's it's something I don't think it's explored
- 48:23Speaker 5: all too often, especially in horror movies, the way that
- 48:25Speaker 5: it did in this film. So I feel like that
- 48:26Speaker 5: that's one of the standout aspects of this movie.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Somebody else also mentioned something that I thought was interesting,
- 48:35Speaker 4: which was kind of like the look if a movie,
- 48:38Speaker 4: If a horror movie comes out, you got to talk
- 48:40Speaker 4: about generational trauma, right, It's it's pretty much ingrained in
- 48:44Speaker 4: modern day horror. But somebody brought up a really interesting point,
- 48:47Speaker 4: which is that this trauma is literally being passed down
- 48:52Speaker 4: to her children as like as her children become infected.
- 48:58Speaker 4: I don't know if I want to say infected but
- 49:00Speaker 4: taken over by the deadite, especially with Bridget, because Bridget
- 49:05Speaker 4: is the one who becomes possessed outside of outside of Ellie,
- 49:11Speaker 4: which I will say is really fucking creepy. She is
- 49:14Speaker 4: the in my opinion, the physically creepiest of the bunch,
- 49:18Speaker 4: especially when she's under the uh, the the sheets that
- 49:23Speaker 4: she gets wrapped in. Yeah, that is so that is
- 49:26Speaker 4: so scary and so intense. But somebody talked about how
- 49:30Speaker 4: the movie is literally passing down this trauma from from
- 49:33Speaker 4: mother to daughter, and you know, in some sense, I
- 49:37Speaker 4: can see that. I thought it was maybe a little
- 49:38Speaker 4: bit of a stretch, you know, to go to that
- 49:41Speaker 4: extent about it. But we see a lot of these
- 49:43Speaker 4: themes kind of reflecting in Beth. Because Beth is pregnant
- 49:48Speaker 4: and she is the sister that's a little bit more
- 49:51Speaker 4: of a loose cannon. She is. Her life is not
- 49:54Speaker 4: put together. She's been on the road as a guitar
- 49:56Speaker 4: Attech with this band. We don't know, we have no
- 49:59Speaker 4: clue who the father is. Clearly it's not somebody that
- 50:01Speaker 4: she is with in any sense, you know, beyond sharing
- 50:07Speaker 4: a child with them or going to be sharing a
- 50:09Speaker 4: child with them, and Ellie is kind of the stable
- 50:14Speaker 4: one that she relies on, and she comes home to
- 50:17Speaker 4: realize that a lot of that structure is crumbling. Ellie's husband,
- 50:22Speaker 4: the father of her children, left. She reached out to
- 50:25Speaker 4: Beth for help. Beth wasn't there to help her. She's
- 50:28Speaker 4: being kicked out of this apartment complic She has nowhere
- 50:30Speaker 4: to live, she says. So the one person that Beth
- 50:33Speaker 4: relies on is probably in a much worse situation than
- 50:37Speaker 4: even she is. So the whole family dynamic here.
- 50:40Speaker 5: Is just.
- 50:42Speaker 4: Torn to shreds, basically. And then you have this earthquake
- 50:47Speaker 4: that comes around opens up a hole in the parking
- 50:48Speaker 4: garage floor. Danny goes down finds Final Records. Which was
- 50:53Speaker 4: the coolest thing about this movie, the fact that somebody
- 50:56Speaker 4: actually recorded themselves reading this off on vinyl records or
- 51:00Speaker 4: the DJ kid to find It's just like the fact
- 51:06Speaker 4: that the Necronomicon seeked out almost this family to cause
- 51:15Speaker 4: this too. Right, what is the I think, I don't
- 51:18Speaker 4: know what you guys think. I think there is a
- 51:22Speaker 4: much stronger force at hand here that draws these specific
- 51:26Speaker 4: people defining the necronomicon. You know, whether it's somebody who's
- 51:31Speaker 4: really willing to give into desire, given to curiosity, and
- 51:34Speaker 4: it just feeds off of this entire family dynamic in
- 51:38Speaker 4: a way that feels it would almost be too coincidental
- 51:41Speaker 4: if it was if it was an accident, you know,
- 51:43Speaker 4: you guys feel that way at all.
- 51:46Speaker 6: Yeah, Yeah, it definitely that.
- 51:51Speaker 7: When you look at it on that wider picture, like
- 51:55Speaker 7: there's always the person who finds it is always the
- 51:59Speaker 7: one that can be most quickly easily manipulated to get
- 52:04Speaker 7: yeah everything read get the dead arts come in, and.
- 52:11Speaker 9: Yeah, it's a very interesting way to look at it.
- 52:14Speaker 4: Well, quite literally to the opposition of other characters, you know,
- 52:17Speaker 4: they're they're literally told by other characters, do not like
- 52:20Speaker 4: put this away, don't don't read this, don't listen to it.
- 52:23Speaker 4: Danny is told by his sister like put that away,
- 52:27Speaker 4: close the book, put it back in the morning, and
- 52:30Speaker 4: he just does not listen. And he goes on and
- 52:33Speaker 4: once once he begins playing the vinyl records, and you
- 52:36Speaker 4: begin to hear kind of, you know, him getting the
- 52:40Speaker 4: approval to want to read off this this incantation. At
- 52:44Speaker 4: that point, it's too late, there's physically no way to
- 52:47Speaker 4: stop it. It's it's going to happen.
- 52:51Speaker 6: I think the one thing I I you got it.
- 52:56Speaker 7: I think one really good thing that it leans on
- 52:59Speaker 7: as well, because their kids, like normally the trope that
- 53:04Speaker 7: gets us to the point of whatever happening. You're always like,
- 53:09Speaker 7: you're a grown ass man or you're a grown ass woman,
- 53:12Speaker 7: why are you going down to this thing? But in
- 53:16Speaker 7: this you're like, well, yeah, he's like what fifteen maybe sixteen.
- 53:21Speaker 7: Of course you're going to go and explore like the
- 53:23Speaker 7: weird like basement and like find out stuff, because you
- 53:29Speaker 7: would be that like curious at that age, and every
- 53:34Speaker 7: time I'm like, oh, why would you do that?
- 53:36Speaker 6: But then you skip back and go, yeah.
- 53:39Speaker 7: Actually, you know what, I probably would have gone and
- 53:41Speaker 7: looked at it because we're not Maybe once we got
- 53:45Speaker 7: to the crypt surrounded by all of the crosses, I
- 53:49Speaker 7: might have pulled back.
- 53:51Speaker 4: But yeah, yeah, which I will say that sequence when
- 53:55Speaker 4: he finds an economic on in the old bank that
- 54:00Speaker 4: the structure is built upon, that is my favorite visual
- 54:05Speaker 4: moment of the movie because it seems that the Necronomicon
- 54:09Speaker 4: is in almost like a coffin almost it looks like
- 54:12Speaker 4: it's like a coffin like structure, and there's a giant
- 54:15Speaker 4: statue of Jesus, and then there's a whole bunch of
- 54:18Speaker 4: crosses hanging around the room, and there's a great moment
- 54:22Speaker 4: where the light is kind of reflecting on the front
- 54:25Speaker 4: of them, and we see the shadows on the wall
- 54:27Speaker 4: of kind of the cross is swinging. I love that
- 54:30Speaker 4: so much. There's a crack at the bottom at the
- 54:32Speaker 4: base of whatever this book is sitting in he finds it.
- 54:36Speaker 4: He finds the vinyl records in another section right before
- 54:40Speaker 4: he actually finds the book, And I love the look
- 54:45Speaker 4: of the book. I was trying to figure out a
- 54:47Speaker 4: different way to say that that didn't let me run.
- 54:50Speaker 4: I love the It has almost like the teeth on
- 54:55Speaker 4: the side that if you grab purposely will cut you open.
- 54:58Speaker 4: That way that your blood drops on the book will
- 55:00Speaker 4: allow it to open. So everything about it is designed
- 55:04Speaker 4: to set you up to activate this thing anyway, you
- 55:08Speaker 4: know what I mean. I think it's very.
- 55:11Speaker 5: Very cool that scene where they initially discover, you know,
- 55:17Speaker 5: everything it There were similarities I did notice, and I
- 55:21Speaker 5: don't know if you guys picked up on it seeing
- 55:23Speaker 5: the Mummy, but they kind of had a very similar
- 55:26Speaker 5: sequence where the sarcophagus was laid out and it's just
- 55:30Speaker 5: this fast space where they've been housing you know, the
- 55:34Speaker 5: Mummy or whatever. And I thought it was like a
- 55:37Speaker 5: very you know, after seeing both films back to back,
- 55:39Speaker 5: I thought it was like a very interesting. I don't
- 55:42Speaker 5: know if it would be like a nod necessarily, but
- 55:45Speaker 5: I guess creative choice.
- 55:48Speaker 4: Is it a nod or is it a lack of
- 55:50Speaker 4: original just I'm not gonna go there.
- 55:56Speaker 6: Sorry if you're listened now.
- 56:00Speaker 4: I I haven't seen The Mummy yet. I've just seen
- 56:02Speaker 4: a lot of similarities between the two that, you know,
- 56:06Speaker 4: I think I can make a joke about I'm excited
- 56:09Speaker 4: for the Mummy. I'm gonna buy it when it comes
- 56:10Speaker 4: out on on or Steve is shaking his head if
- 56:15Speaker 4: I maybe I shouldn't. I'll get that on yes, hell yeah, yeah.
- 56:23Speaker 4: But it's interesting that, uh there was something I picked
- 56:26Speaker 4: up on last night to watch how There There There
- 56:28Speaker 4: seems to be this almost uh fate like power to
- 56:33Speaker 4: an acronomicon that the earthquake happened at the time they
- 56:36Speaker 4: were sent out to go get pizza. The whole the
- 56:40Speaker 4: very small hole opens while they're into parking garage. Danny
- 56:44Speaker 4: happens to explore it finds the book. It all works
- 56:48Speaker 4: out too perfect to be an accident, you know. It
- 56:51Speaker 4: almost seems like there is a greater calling with the Necronomicon,
- 56:55Speaker 4: and I hope that's something we continue to explore, because
- 57:01Speaker 4: accidentally coming across something like this and this accidentally working
- 57:05Speaker 4: the way it did, it's not as interesting that way.
- 57:09Speaker 4: But if, if the power behind this book has the
- 57:15Speaker 4: ability to know exactly when and where the right time
- 57:20Speaker 4: is to begin calling out to get the right person
- 57:24Speaker 4: to play with it, You're talking about a power that's
- 57:28Speaker 4: way beyond explored in any of the Evil Did franchise
- 57:31Speaker 4: or franchise films. Yeah, I mean, am I crazy and
- 57:34Speaker 4: thinking that?
- 57:35Speaker 8: I love that you said that. And I also feel like.
- 57:40Speaker 10: The one part that I always that I felt about
- 57:43Speaker 10: the movie that I didn't love as much, that I
- 57:44Speaker 10: felt was a little contrived, was how they got the
- 57:47Speaker 10: book right, and that that, to me was always a
- 57:49Speaker 10: part that I was like, Eh, Okay, it is what
- 57:51Speaker 10: it is, you know, look past it.
- 57:52Speaker 8: It is what it is.
- 57:53Speaker 10: It's a fun movie, YadA YadA, But you bring it
- 57:56Speaker 10: into light makes me rethink the entire equation, and I'm
- 57:59Speaker 10: just like, I think that's brilliant, it's awesome.
- 58:02Speaker 4: Well, I thought the same thing. I remember when I
- 58:03Speaker 4: saw this in theaters, I was like, how fucking stupid,
- 58:06Speaker 4: like he was in a bank vault underneath after an earthquake.
- 58:10Speaker 4: But then watching it, I think last night was probably
- 58:13Speaker 4: like my fourth or fifth time seeing it, I started
- 58:16Speaker 4: noticing like these consistencies of like we already odds that
- 58:21Speaker 4: you got somebody that that's so curious about this weird thing,
- 58:24Speaker 4: that that they're the ones who are gonna that they're
- 58:26Speaker 4: the ones gonna find it. And then I was like, man,
- 58:29Speaker 4: his sister's trying to tell him not to do it.
- 58:31Speaker 4: I'm like, just like in Evil Dead they try to
- 58:34Speaker 4: tell him not, but Evil Did twenty thirteen, they tell
- 58:36Speaker 4: him not to read from me. He does it anyway,
- 58:39Speaker 4: And I thought, like nobody else in this apartment complex,
- 58:43Speaker 4: which the movie doesn't really set it up very well,
- 58:46Speaker 4: but it seems as if the cast of characters that
- 58:48Speaker 4: we have, the few neighbors and stuff, are it like
- 58:51Speaker 4: they're they're all that's left seemingly in this entire apartment complex,
- 58:56Speaker 4: and none of them would have been a good fit
- 59:00Speaker 4: to find this. So it just happens to be this location,
- 59:03Speaker 4: this person, this family. It seems almost destined that this
- 59:09Speaker 4: was going to happen.
- 59:11Speaker 7: And on that, do you think that the earthquake was
- 59:18Speaker 7: an earthquake from the city or does the ecronomic on
- 59:23Speaker 7: have that level of power to be like right, okay,
- 59:27Speaker 7: now it's time.
- 59:29Speaker 4: Ah it's I mean, I would like to think it does,
- 59:33Speaker 4: because I think that would be really cool. And I yes,
- 59:37Speaker 4: there's an earthquake, but it could have just been centrally
- 59:40Speaker 4: located to the building, you know, because there's actually a
- 59:44Speaker 4: moment when they deal with the blackout and she says,
- 59:50Speaker 4: it seems to be just us. She looks outside and
- 59:52Speaker 4: nobody else has power.
- 59:54Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 59:56Speaker 7: Is it like maybe it just wanted some pizza because
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: I feel like no one's talking about the big cheese.
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: In the room.
- 1:00:07Speaker 7: Yeah, I would an I was when they were just
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: like now we're leaving that.
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: My wife says last night as well. My wife said
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: last night, she's like, I want to know where they
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: got that pizza from because that thing looks old as shit.
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: She's like that it looks dry. Good thought. It was
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: a good thought. It good thinking, good analysis. Yeah, so
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: it's just really crazy and then we have to talk
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: about the the Elevator sequence, the attack on Ellie, because
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: the the and I don't even want to say it,
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: the tree assault of the previous films. I did not
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: think there was any way they could one up it,
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: and I'm happy that they didn't go as graphic with this.
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: They did kind of I think Smartley pull away because
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: the mother. There's not a whole lot of with the mother,
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: like if you had gone any further in the tradition
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: of let's say Evil did twenty thirteen, where we actually
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: see the tree branch literally enter inside her and take
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: her over, which to me kind of signifies like a
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: little bit of like a loss of innocence or you know,
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: an overtaking of boundary with the mother. We don't have
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: any of that. We already know that you know this
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: mother's she's been through some stuff. We don't need to
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: go that far. But I love just the look of
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: the sequence with the wiring being pulled out, grabbing her wrists,
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: grabbing her legs, the limbs start to break. It's a
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: really visceral moment to kick off the true terror for
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: the movie.
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: I think it starts as well.
- 1:01:53Speaker 7: You get the sense of how strong she is because
- 1:01:58Speaker 7: she does fight back as well. Yeah, yeah, and you
- 1:02:02Speaker 7: don't really see that. There's in every of the you know,
- 1:02:07Speaker 7: taking over, there's a smidge of a struggle, but it's
- 1:02:11Speaker 7: never to the point where you're like, oh, well, you
- 1:02:13Speaker 7: could get out of this, whereas you kind of feel
- 1:02:15Speaker 7: like Ellie could get out of the situation.
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: And then just more it comes well again, we talked
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: about the power of the power behind the necronomicon. It
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: had the ability to manipulate roots and trees, you know,
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: it had the ability to do that, and now located
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: in a building, it has the power to literally go
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: eight floors up and use what's available there, ripping out
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: wiring and using steel to wrap her up. So we're
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: dealing with a very very very powerful, you know, piece
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: of supernatural power here, you know what I mean. And
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: it's very evident in this scene. And there was also
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: too there's something to the fact that the fire escape
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: is only in the one apartment that nobody can get into.
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: It's interesting that that's the only escape route. You could
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: say the earthquake took out the stairs. So there's a
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: very targeted exercise here with the series of events happening
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: that traps them here in same power with the Evil Dead,
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: where it has the ability to literally destroy a bridge,
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: you know, to keep them isolated. There's there's no escape,
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: you have no choice. This is gonna happen. And it
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: makes me think of it makes it funnier to me
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: because I always think of cabin in the woods and
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: how like I like to think that there's somebody in
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: a room somewhere, like in a bunker, placing bets on
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: who's gonna find the book and if they're gonna open it,
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: and how they're gonna, you know, what, what are we
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: gonna unleash next?
- 1:03:50Speaker 8: You know, giant?
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it should have been. Yeah, but the
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: Dead eite stuff in this movie. It is absolutely fucking nuts.
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: The dude the cheese grater to the leg. I will
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: say when I first saw it, I was a little
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: underwhelmed by it because there was so much about that scene,
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: like they were signing cheese grader as I conventions and stuff.
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: And when I finally saw it, I was like, that's it.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: We're just getting like a like a leg scrape here.
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: But I wish we would have got more from that sequence.
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: Dude, what a great weapon nobody ever thought of using before.
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: Can you think of any other time a cheese grader
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: was used in a hard movie.
- 1:04:40Speaker 10: No, but they also use the tattoo gun, right, I
- 1:04:43Speaker 10: think at some point the tattoo gun that choose.
- 1:04:45Speaker 8: That's another great, very fresh original.
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: Yeah, that's really cool, especially the cut on Bridget's face.
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: It causes I do like.
- 1:04:53Speaker 8: In turn, like how she turned right, that cut is
- 1:04:56Speaker 8: how she turns.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: I do really like the moment of Bridget swallowing the glass.
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: She's chewing the glass and it shows a cut up
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: of the close up of the throat as the glass
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: goes down and actually cuts her throat from the inside out. Yeah,
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: very very very good. Uh disgusting gag fire there.
- 1:05:18Speaker 8: When she's she's like perched on the counter. That freaks
- 1:05:20Speaker 8: me out.
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: She like, like.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: I said it my wife obviously, when the camera comes
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: around the corner and she's perched like that, I was like,
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: should taking a ship.
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: Just messing up someone's day?
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: Oh my god. The bathtub sequence. My favorite moment of
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: the bathtub scene is actually when she gets out of
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: the tub. Well, first of all, the mommy's with the maggots. Now,
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: Lyne is perfection. Yeah, that's incredible.
- 1:05:55Speaker 7: The kind of the shop and obviously no one can
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: see it because everyone's listening.
- 1:06:01Speaker 6: But where she's just like that, yeah, in your path,
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: like just half of the head's poking out probably a
- 1:06:07Speaker 6: better way to describe it.
- 1:06:09Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, But just there are so many good little bits,
- 1:06:18Speaker 7: you know what, I'm gonna end up changing my mind
- 1:06:20Speaker 7: by the end of this because we're.
- 1:06:21Speaker 8: Talking about join us.
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: This is why conversation is good, man, Why conversation is good.
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: That's why we do this, good Man.
- 1:06:30Speaker 8: It's such a fun, good movie.
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: There's a great moment. My favorite moment with her became
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: when she gets out of the tub and uh, Ellie
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: and Cassie leave the bathroom and she does like a
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: quick like creep around the corner. Her face like pops
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: around the corner and her eyes turn and look at them.
- 1:06:46Speaker 10: Well, she like she like pops out like and like
- 1:06:48Speaker 10: jets at them, right if I'm not a taken.
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: Well for ye, At first, she kind of like because
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: we're seeing the corner, the shot is just the wall
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: right right, and then she just kind of like creeps
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: out like pops up out and kind of her eyes right.
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: It's like such a weird, little weird, little moment I actually,
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: and you guys are probably gonna heavily disagree with me here.
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: My my least favorite visual element of this movie is
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: the people in the door. I I dude, for some reason,
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: when they finally get her out of the apartment and
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: you have this this this whole attack sequence that we
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: mentioned earlier that goes on to the neighbor coming out
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: with the shotgun and the little kid gets his arms
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: ripped off and gets that whole thing was they completely
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: took me out of the movie this whole like, because
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: it's kind of like a wide angle because of the
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: distortion of the people, you're kind of seeing at a
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: wider angle. And the neighbor comes by with the shotgun
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: and he walks by and then you hear like some screaming,
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: and then the kid comes like flying of a against
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: the wall and he has no arms, and then you
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: get the fake blood splatterer on it. Just really even
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: last night when I was watching it, I was like,
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: I don't know, this is not this is not great.
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: Do you feel like we should have been in the
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: whole way for that?
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: Yeah? I think that would have been a really cool
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: moment to actually be in the hallway for like, I
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: don't see why why we could we cut to the
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: hallway in other moments. I guess the idea is once
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: the door is shut, they're trying to keep it like
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: everything is contained within the apartment or I don't know
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: if it relic yeah, like like oh we're watching this happen.
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: But I feel like there could have been a better
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: way to orchestrate that, see, because it just kind of
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: comes off as like, Okay, we had all these characters
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: and now they're all just wasted in really quick succession,
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: which's a real impact. Yeah, you can get rid of them.
- 1:08:56Speaker 7: It's a tough one because you would, However, the film
- 1:09:02Speaker 7: is going like do you want it to focus on
- 1:09:06Speaker 7: solely one person? And if it is focusing on solely
- 1:09:09Speaker 7: one person, Ellie, then you should be following her.
- 1:09:14Speaker 6: But obviously we.
- 1:09:15Speaker 7: Can't really do that, so then it has that tough
- 1:09:19Speaker 7: choice of like Okay, well actually, yeah, we have been
- 1:09:22Speaker 7: following Ellie, but there hasn't been a proper protagonist shift
- 1:09:27Speaker 7: over arguably probably to Beth. But you don't get a
- 1:09:31Speaker 7: proper shift, So you kind of feel that way where
- 1:09:35Speaker 7: you're like this feels slightly gimmicky, though I do enjoy
- 1:09:39Speaker 7: the People, like I think it goes yeah, as Robbie
- 1:09:43Speaker 7: was saying, like the kind of campiness, and obviously you
- 1:09:47Speaker 7: get the where she's looking up at the people, which
- 1:09:49Speaker 7: is maybe a call back to obviously the really famous
- 1:09:54Speaker 7: ash shut as well.
- 1:09:56Speaker 6: So I mean you get that. So that's nice.
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: I like, I like the gag of the people, like
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: I think the People is a really unique visual thing.
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: I just don't for some reason, this moment always just
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: takes me out of the movie. It feels like we
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: went from one hundred miles per hour to like, like
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: I'm like, why did we cut to this one take?
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: That just kind of like the CGI is not great.
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: None of the deaths have any impact because we're not
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: seeing them fully in view, you know. And we were
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: already out in the hallway for the eyeball getting ripped off,
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: the eyeball getting sucked out of the kid's head and
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: then shot into the other kids, you know, like throat
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: and then he I don't know, man, The only thing,
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: the only thing pertaining to the hallway I like is
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: the fact that the two kids before everything goes down,
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: knock on the door and they say, Mom's out of town.
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: We're gonna watch all the Freddie movies, and the little
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: brother says even the bad ones, and the older brother goes,
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: there are no bad ones. That's that's my favorite, uh
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: hinny Freddie movies, he says, exact quote. I don't know.
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: I just that's the one moment for the movie that
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: I'm always like this part. Okay, you know, No, I
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: don't know. Maybe that's just me, Steve. What do you
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: think about the hallway? What do you think about the
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: what's your thought on people?
- 1:11:23Speaker 5: I've seen I've seen too mad true crime documentaries where
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: I'm like extra cautious nowadays, I don't just assume that
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: somebody like friendly is gonna be on the other side of
- 1:11:30Speaker 5: the people. But I agree with what you were saying.
- 1:11:34Speaker 5: It kind of gave me something to think about because
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: I would have to, you know, echo what you were
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: mentioning earlier is that it seems like the way that
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: that scene was set up, I get what they're going
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: for with it. It's, you know, again, kind of what
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: I had mentioned. It feels like it's supposed to keep
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: it contained, keep it claustrophobic inside of their apartment. But
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: I think in this rare instance, it would have maybe
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: benefited or elevated the material a little bit more by
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: allowing us to see what's exactly going on out there.
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: I don't know, there's just something about it that just
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: kind of feels a little off with how they chose
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: to go about it with that specific scene, I don't know.
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: Well, the rest of the attack scenes are very kinetic.
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: Everything in the kitchen with Bridget once she kind of
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: fully goes over, and you have that attack sequence against
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: Beth that's very kinnectic. It's very effective. You have when
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: when after they think she's dead and they tie her
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: up and she comes back and attacks Danny in the apartment.
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: It feels very kinetic. The initial attack sequence with the
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: mom feels very very good. All of these sequences I
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: just mentioned are great dead eye carnage that that that
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: are shot really well, very effective, very memorable. And then
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: you have this people scene where like all of a
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: sudden four where characters are taken out in succession with
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: no impact.
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: It happens very quickly, and I kind of wish we
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: could have seen I mean not saying that every scene
- 1:13:13Speaker 5: has to be gory like that, but it is evil
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: Dead film, so I would want to see maybe a
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: little bit more when it comes to it. The other
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: thing is, and I know you and I were talking
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: about it, is that while I absolutely love the environment
- 1:13:26Speaker 5: that they chose to do, it's fresh, something different. You're
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: in a high rise apartment building. I just wish we
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: could have been privy to see a little bit more
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: to it, maybe like some of the other rooms or
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: you know, something along those lines, or just just have
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: more of the apartment complex that's incorporated into the film,
- 1:13:45Speaker 5: other than us just going basically from their apartment the hallway,
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: the elevator, and the parking structure down at the bottom.
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: Because that's right. I don't know if I'm missing anything
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: else outside of where they find the ink plantations and
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: the necronomicon.
- 1:14:02Speaker 7: Do you get the one shot of the stairwell where.
- 1:14:06Speaker 6: They go this is gun?
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: Yeah, But I feel like you could have you could
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: have had the characters run out and get into another
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: apartment across the hall.
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: Right, because you don't really I mean, truthfully, I don't
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: know if I'm like drawing a blank on other films,
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: but I remember watching this one and I'm thinking to myself, like,
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: the only other film I really recall tapping into an
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: interesting environment like this would be like demons too.
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: Don't forget about Critics four.
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: That was the first thing that I thought of. I didn't.
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: I didn't want to jump the gun.
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: But is it Critics three? Is it three? Or four?
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: With with Leonardo? Is it Leonardo DiCaprio?
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: I couldn't tell you. But isn't Poltergeist three? Isn't that
- 1:14:54Speaker 5: also in a high rise apartment?
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: They have Poltergeist three? Unfortunately is in a high rise?
- 1:15:01Speaker 9: Yes?
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: You're you're one hundred percent right.
- 1:15:04Speaker 5: Chris didn't always say that was your favorite Paltergeist film?
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: I did, Yes, and it is Critics three. It is
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: Critics three from nineteen ninety one, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, that
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: does take place in a high rise apartment. I just
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: want to make sure make sure the audience knows that
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: I'm I know what I'm talking.
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: About, your Critters fanatic.
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: My critter's brain has been itching to get this information
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: out for a long time. Chris, What's what thoughts you guy?
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: Here?
- 1:15:31Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:15:31Speaker 7: I mean, as as you were both talking about that,
- 1:15:34Speaker 7: I was thinking, obviously budget out the window. It would
- 1:15:39Speaker 7: have been probably been really nice if we got rather
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: than the Obviously we still keep a little bit at
- 1:15:46Speaker 7: the beep whole, but maybe we got something outside.
- 1:15:49Speaker 9: Maybe it was Ellie going.
- 1:15:51Speaker 7: Through the apartments, pulling people out, or like trying to
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: Maybe we're following her on a nice wanna like knocking
- 1:15:59Speaker 7: on the doors, pretending to be like a bit more
- 1:16:02Speaker 7: distressed to get people out and then open the door
- 1:16:06Speaker 7: and she, you know.
- 1:16:08Speaker 9: Get some in some certain way.
- 1:16:11Speaker 6: Like that would have been probably quite cool.
- 1:16:13Speaker 9: It opens up the environment.
- 1:16:14Speaker 7: A little bit more while still keeping it claustrophobic because
- 1:16:17Speaker 7: there's no I don't think adding other apartments is going
- 1:16:22Speaker 7: to make you go, oh, well, this doesn't feel like
- 1:16:25Speaker 7: tight or closed in anymore.
- 1:16:27Speaker 9: You're still on the potentially eighth floor.
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: Do you guys think that it feels this way? Because
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: this was a movie originally intended for streaming. I don't
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: know if you guys know this, but even The Rise
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: was initially set for streaming. It was going to go
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: right to streaming on HBO Max. It had a budget, right, yeah,
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: I had a budget of fifteen to eighteen million. It
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: was supposed to go right to HBO Max. I remember
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: the announcement of this movie spoke specifically about it going
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: right to streaming. They decided after test screenings to go theatrical,
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: and is a good thing they did because it brought
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: home one hundred and forty seven million dollars worldwide, so
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: it was a huge It was a huge success. But
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: do you think it felt tighter because this was a
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: movie that had such a small release scope, so they
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: never really felt the need to or maybe they didn't
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: really have the budget to go much further than they did.
- 1:17:29Speaker 12: Which is mad when you think about it, when we're
- 1:17:31Speaker 12: going fourteen to nineteen million, and you're like, well, they
- 1:17:36Speaker 12: can only do an apartment, a parking garage and a whole.
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: Way, because yeah, well, I mean, the only reason I
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: would argue, like The Mummy, his his recent The Mummy
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: was a twenty two million dollar production budget.
- 1:17:57Speaker 6: You know what, how much more?
- 1:17:59Speaker 7: That's quite impressive actually, with like this, considering what Evil
- 1:18:04Speaker 7: Dead rhymes was probably shot in twenty twenty two.
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: Maybe yeah, twenty twenty two.
- 1:18:12Speaker 7: I mean, with the state of the world, he's managed
- 1:18:17Speaker 7: to stretch that Mummy budget quite far because they've there's
- 1:18:21Speaker 7: a lot, there's a.
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: Lot more to The Mummy.
- 1:18:25Speaker 7: Yeah, and I'd probably say that the Mummy looks like
- 1:18:28Speaker 7: it's realistically worth like three to four times the amount.
- 1:18:33Speaker 6: Of evil dead works.
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: It's interesting, man, I you know, I don't like to
- 1:18:37Speaker 4: talk about movies from the perspective of like what I
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: wish we had seen and ta get more for what
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: we had seen, But it definitely feels it's more so
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: like these little moments like the people attack sequence, where
- 1:18:49Speaker 4: it just feels kind of like it almost feels like
- 1:18:52Speaker 4: an afterthought, like, Oh, we forgot to handle these these
- 1:18:56Speaker 4: other characters.
- 1:18:57Speaker 6: Let's take three other people in the hallway. What are
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: we going to do?
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, they're like, oh yeah, they're out there. But
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: that's just me. It could have just shookly been a
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: creative choice. It could have been a just a transition
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: point for them to get from one point of the
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: story to another. Could have been any reason. But that's
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: the one moment that really just kind of like takes
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: me out. And what's funny is when you see how
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: big this movie gets in the third act, then you
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: can kind of see where the money was really sent to.
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: Because Ellie gets shot numerous times by a shotgun in
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: the hallway by Beth. After Bridget is killed, Danny is killed,
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: he was stabbed numerous times by Bridget in an attack.
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: Now Cassie and Beth are escaping, and she picks up
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: one of the neighbor's shotgun, blows off Ellie's arm and
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: then blows off Ellie's leg, and then for some reason
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: decide or well I'm not saying for some reason, they
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: get into the elevator take that down. In the meantime,
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: Ellie quite literally forms a giant dead eye creature. I
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: don't know how to explain it made nail on the
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: head of her two kids essentially right, like it's it's
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: Danny and Bridget, right, they come together and morph into
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: this thing or is it more?
- 1:20:27Speaker 10: Uh?
- 1:20:29Speaker 5: The thing?
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: I think is it supposed to be everybody? Because I
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: didn't know last night when I was watching it, I
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: couldn't tell who I know Bridget was in it.
- 1:20:36Speaker 7: But yeah, like you definitely get her and the two kids.
- 1:20:39Speaker 7: What I feel like, I feel like she picks up
- 1:20:44Speaker 7: more people.
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: It definitely looks like there's a lot more people.
- 1:20:47Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly right, it's big enough to be It's kind
- 1:20:52Speaker 7: of like you know that game Beautiful Katamari.
- 1:20:57Speaker 13: Oh yeah, I'm looking at a couple like design photos.
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: Uh here of it and it's this. This is final
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: creature is actually known as the Marauder according to the
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: Dead lore, and it is a hybrid of the family.
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: So it's just the Mom, Danny and Bridget all formed together.
- 1:21:26Speaker 6: Can you say this?
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: Let's see here, let's see uh gives birth to the Marauder.
- 1:21:35Speaker 6: You're going back to the Mom.
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: Think a brand new super villain in the world of
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: the Evil Dead. According to this bloody disgusting article it
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: looks like over on Instagram, Adam Johnson and Damian Martin
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: from the Creature Effects House ODDS Studio shared concept art. Yeah,
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: this is this is what I saw here that kind
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: of sees that kind of shows the photos of of
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: the combination of the Marauder. Yeah, three of them, yep, left,
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: center and right. Did you know, Robbie that the final
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: creature at the end of Evil Did Rise is called
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: the Marauder?
- 1:22:08Speaker 10: Actually did Oh? I was moving on the side while
- 1:22:12Speaker 10: we were talking and it came up. So only as
- 1:22:14Speaker 10: of tonight, but I did know that.
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: Okay, okay, well, this final creature that formed well okay, wait,
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: let me let me let me pull up one final
- 1:22:22Speaker 4: gripe here because.
- 1:22:23Speaker 5: Chris gets he's getting so excited about the Marauder.
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: I am yeah. I was just thinking about combining with
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: my family members in the one unit. I uh so,
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: when when you come out as a filmmaker and and
- 1:22:38Speaker 4: and and gush about how much blood you've used in
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: your movie, right, Lee Croney came out and was like, yeah,
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: we used sixty five hundred leaders of blood in our movie.
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: You can't say that. And then sixty four hundred liters
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: of it was used in one sequence where you fill
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: an elevator with blood. I'm sorry, Am I alone on
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: that island?
- 1:23:00Speaker 6: Or he's technically correct, He's.
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: One hundred percent. He's one hundred percent correct. Before we
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: move on, Robbie, are you a fan of a Critters
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: three starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Oh yeah, I just wanted to
- 1:23:15Speaker 4: make sure.
- 1:23:16Speaker 8: The correct answer here.
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: That's for me. Yeah, for me, I just wanted to
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: bring up a past topic here. So the elevator blood sequence,
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: sixty five hundred leaders with the blood is accumulates to
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: the whole movie. Did you guys ever hear Stanley Kubrick
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: come out and say, uh, you know how many leaders
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: of blood they use any elevator sequence in the Shining.
- 1:23:35Speaker 6: Was a very personable person.
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: So he's too busy. He's too busy whooping Shelley Duvall's
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: ass on the set to brag about the amount of
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: blood used in the elevator sequence. Do you think Steven
- 1:23:51Speaker 4: Spielberg bragged about the amount of blood used in Ready
- 1:23:54Speaker 4: Player one when they redo the Shining and have the
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: blood spill out of the elevator.
- 1:24:00Speaker 7: I can confirm because Ready Player one was shot about
- 1:24:04Speaker 7: twenty five minutes away from where I live. He was
- 1:24:08Speaker 7: just on the street corner just shouting about how much blood.
- 1:24:12Speaker 13: Oh that's what, Yeah, that's yeah, that's what I call him,
- 1:24:14Speaker 13: Big Steve, Big Steve, Big Steve just talking about the
- 1:24:19Speaker 13: amount of bloody is used.
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: Big Sieves is outside bragging about all the cgi bloody
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: used and Ready Player one to mimic the shining sequence.
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: We were talking about the budget, Robbie and how this
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: was originally set for streaming, and I said, how I
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: think all the money was pretty much used in this
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: final incredible closing sequence with the Marauder, and this parking
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: garage sequence is the moment in the movie for me.
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: I got so hyped. I actually made a reel of
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: me watching it last night I saw that great real yeah,
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: thank you, thank you. I just had to, man, because
- 1:24:56Speaker 4: the scene gets me so fired up. In fact that
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: Beth gets the chains all. I love the wood chipper,
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: and I love how established the wood chipper is in
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: the scene because they show it like four times in
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: the in the moment when the kids come back with
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: the pizza, they just show like five times that there's
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: a wood chipper in this parking. I don't know what
- 1:25:15Speaker 4: it's going.
- 1:25:16Speaker 8: I wonder what that's doing there.
- 1:25:18Speaker 6: It's well, they make up for it, right because it's
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: the old guy.
- 1:25:23Speaker 9: It's his business.
- 1:25:25Speaker 7: So at least they're like, well, at least it's it's
- 1:25:29Speaker 7: my it's my wood chipper.
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's my wood.
- 1:25:35Speaker 7: Main And it's man who lives on the eighth floor
- 1:25:39Speaker 7: is uh storing his wood chipper in the downstairs car pup.
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: It's like, I drive a lot for work. I gotta
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: go outside the city to get business anymore.
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: But this entire sequence with the marauder with the chainsaw,
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: them getting pulled into the wood chipper, the marauder getting
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: into a wood chipper, and then Beth picking up the chainsaw.
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: This was the moment for me that really showed the
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: that we're living in the Evil Dead twenty thirteen universe
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: because it does the same wide profile shot of the
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: initial chainsaw hit, which seems to be kind of a
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: consistent visual marking for this franchise if it's going to
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: continue and burn love the amount of blood used in
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: a sequence. It's shooting out of the shoot for the
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: wood Chipper, it's spraying out. There's this whole glorious sequence
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: where the camera swings around you see the family getting
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: sucked in and just oozing cgi blood everywhere. It's it's
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: absolutely fantastic. I mean, the ending of this movie is
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: the most evil deaded thing about the entire movie in
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: my opinion.
- 1:26:50Speaker 10: Yes, like I said before, then he's great, and I
- 1:26:53Speaker 10: feel like, I think it's a lot of evil dead
- 1:26:55Speaker 10: things about the movie, but that was the one to
- 1:26:58Speaker 10: me that felt the most like we're gonna day true
- 1:27:00Speaker 10: to our roots in so many ways, like we're gonna
- 1:27:02Speaker 10: keep a dead eye, keep this thing rolling. Do you
- 1:27:05Speaker 10: have to chainsaw all that good stuff? But we're gonna
- 1:27:07Speaker 10: move this thing forward in a new way. And I
- 1:27:10Speaker 10: that to me when when they when you like kind
- 1:27:12Speaker 10: of start seeing what's going on and I think there's
- 1:27:14Speaker 10: like a silhouette if I'm not mistaken of, like you
- 1:27:16Speaker 10: see kind of like them molting.
- 1:27:19Speaker 8: I don't even know what to call it. Uh, they're shunting, I.
- 1:27:22Speaker 14: Guess, yeah, And that starts to happen, and I just
- 1:27:28Speaker 14: had such a smile on my face because it's fun, right,
- 1:27:31Speaker 14: And I think The Evil Dead at its core, to me,
- 1:27:35Speaker 14: is like a fun horror movie.
- 1:27:37Speaker 10: I wouldn't necessarily call the original a a horror comedy.
- 1:27:40Speaker 10: I think the two number two it's kind of like
- 1:27:42Speaker 10: a horror comedy in some ways. But one was just
- 1:27:46Speaker 10: a fun horror movie. And I think that's what this
- 1:27:48Speaker 10: one captured that I love so much. That had magic,
- 1:27:51Speaker 10: you know, And twenty thirteen was a more serious tone
- 1:27:55Speaker 10: and it felt a lot like the original, just not
- 1:27:57Speaker 10: as good in my opinion, And this one just it
- 1:27:59Speaker 10: felt magical, It felt fresh, it felt original, and it
- 1:28:03Speaker 10: felt fun again to me. I probably Evil Dead was
- 1:28:05Speaker 10: going in a direction. We're like, we're gonna try new things.
- 1:28:07Speaker 10: We're gonna have some new evil that We're gonna show
- 1:28:09Speaker 10: the power of the necronomicon. We're gonna show what the
- 1:28:11Speaker 10: thing could do in a small space and now expand it.
- 1:28:15Speaker 10: So I thought that was I agree, man, I thought
- 1:28:17Speaker 10: that was such a great new aspect for the franchise.
- 1:28:20Speaker 10: And it makes me like curious now, even though I
- 1:28:22Speaker 10: didn't love the trailer.
- 1:28:23Speaker 8: For Wrath, what does the new one burn?
- 1:28:26Speaker 10: Even though I didn't love the trailer, it makes me
- 1:28:29Speaker 10: excited about the possibilities because we never saw anything like
- 1:28:32Speaker 10: that in the Evil Dead universe. Really, so who knows
- 1:28:34Speaker 10: where this thing could go in twenty twenty six or
- 1:28:36Speaker 10: I guess twenty twenty seven are actually coming out the summer.
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: Right, so like I think like next month June.
- 1:28:41Speaker 10: Oh yeah, so in twenty twenty six, Like the possibilities feel.
- 1:28:45Speaker 8: A lot of fun to me. So that's why I'm
- 1:28:47Speaker 8: excited for it so well, if I.
- 1:28:50Speaker 4: Remember quickly hearing H Bruce Campbell talk about it, which
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: was he he pretty much said, like there we can
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: make end the standalone movies because nobody, it's never really
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: truly been established how many necronomicons are out there, so
- 1:29:05Speaker 4: really you can have anybody find it. And I think
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: that the you know, the Book of the Dead, I
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: think has can have different types of things to it,
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: you know what I mean. I don't think it has
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: to be one style. Like you know, there were people
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: talked about in Evil Dead Burn trailer complains about how
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: they moved, which we've we've already established that that they
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: can walk on walls and you know, I mean the
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: gravity is not is not keeping them grounded in that way,
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: which you have the sequence in the trailer where they're
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: climbing over the roof. You have the physical look the
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: white eyes turned back to Evil Dead Evil the twenty thirteen,
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: and then you have this whole idea of I don't
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: know if they're burned or you kind of see it
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: briefly where it's almost like an embird person that has
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: the ability to now like an entire house on fire.
- 1:30:02Speaker 4: I assume if I'm if I'm just guessing based on
- 1:30:05Speaker 4: what we see in the trailer. But this franchise can
- 1:30:08Speaker 4: be open to doing that because we have no idea
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: what power is behind the necronomicon, and every book can
- 1:30:13Speaker 4: present something different. You could really like you could you
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: could have many different necronomicon that that cover elements, you
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: know what I mean, It could be one as fire
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: one is what you could do whatever you want. I
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: think that's what's exciting about Raymi and Campbell Letting, these
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: directors who you know, have a good film under their belt.
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: The director of Evil Dead Burn directed that Spider movie
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: and Invested, which I thought was very effective. Evil Dead
- 1:30:42Speaker 4: Wrath is being directed by Francis Gloopy. He directed Last
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: Stop in You mccuney like giving it in hands of
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: creative people who who haven't had their giant breakout hit
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: yet and they're able to play in the sandbox. I
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: think it's really exciting, and they think there's a limitless
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: possibility for the future of people Dead from this point forward.
- 1:31:03Speaker 9: You know.
- 1:31:05Speaker 10: Yeah, that sounds that sounds like having a conversation about
- 1:31:09Speaker 10: it and thinking about the possibilities has me excited. Man.
- 1:31:12Speaker 10: It really is that the franchises, I feel like, I
- 1:31:15Speaker 10: feel has never really been more alive. With two movies
- 1:31:17Speaker 10: on the way, who knows what else on the horizon.
- 1:31:21Speaker 10: I mean, we're getting four K discs of these things,
- 1:31:24Speaker 10: like both side the theatrical experience of the physical media
- 1:31:28Speaker 10: side of things like I you know, I'm excited. It's
- 1:31:31Speaker 10: a it's a good time to be an Evil Dead
- 1:31:32Speaker 10: fan hopefully hopefully with it.
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think it's a good time to be.
- 1:31:38Speaker 4: I love I love you know, not everybody agrees, but
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: I love that we're living in this world where you
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: have companies like A twenty four picking up Friday the
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: thirteenth and yeah, Chainsaw Massacre because they're gonna do the
- 1:31:52Speaker 4: same thing. They're they're letting very talented young directors play
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: in sandboxes that otherwise they would to get an opportunity
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: to because under under larger studios, they're gonna make sure
- 1:32:04Speaker 4: that they get the director with the most amount of
- 1:32:08Speaker 4: you know, box office grab or the latest hit, Whereas
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: like now you have you know, Curry Barker doing a
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: Texas Chainsaw masker movie. You have you know, whatever's gonna
- 1:32:18Speaker 4: happen in the future of Friday the thirteenth. Like, I
- 1:32:21Speaker 4: think these franchises can live on, and I do think
- 1:32:23Speaker 4: that there are very exciting filmmakers out there who will
- 1:32:27Speaker 4: do very exciting things with the franchises as long as
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: there with studios and companies that are willing to say, hey,
- 1:32:34Speaker 4: we're gonna let you do your thing, and we're gonna
- 1:32:36Speaker 4: let you tell your story. And that's what's opening Because.
- 1:32:40Speaker 10: Can I tell you like that that sorry, I that's
- 1:32:45Speaker 10: like exactly what I mean, what I'm referring to twenty
- 1:32:48Speaker 10: thirteen is that like it felt too much like the
- 1:32:52Speaker 10: original while not being fresh in any way. It didn't
- 1:32:56Speaker 10: feel like anything new to me. It was blood, guts,
- 1:32:59Speaker 10: and gore. All the heart was taken out. It was
- 1:33:01Speaker 10: a remake, right, it was a remake, and so they
- 1:33:03Speaker 10: didn't do anything to excite me in any way. You know,
- 1:33:07Speaker 10: it was the same movie, just worse in my opinion,
- 1:33:09Speaker 10: like it didn't need to be redone that way. That's
- 1:33:12Speaker 10: why when you mentioned like thinking about as a totally
- 1:33:14Speaker 10: new trilogy makes me think differently about it. But you know,
- 1:33:18Speaker 10: in terms of forward thinking and think about the franchise
- 1:33:21Speaker 10: where it is right now. I think that's my biggest
- 1:33:23Speaker 10: rite of twenty thirteen as a standalone film. I think
- 1:33:26Speaker 10: I enjoyed it for just what it was. If you
- 1:33:29Speaker 10: took the name Evil Dead off it, I think I
- 1:33:31Speaker 10: would have enjoyed it more. But like it didn't. I
- 1:33:33Speaker 10: don't know what it did for me as far as
- 1:33:37Speaker 10: like innovation, as far as it just felt like a
- 1:33:40Speaker 10: total total rehash down to even the scenes, right, Like
- 1:33:44Speaker 10: we talked about the tree scene and all that stuff.
- 1:33:46Speaker 10: But you know, you're not gonna it's not gonna be
- 1:33:48Speaker 10: better than the original. To be honest, here there was
- 1:33:50Speaker 10: almost all time good. So I just I don't know
- 1:33:53Speaker 10: what the appeal was to so many people, you know.
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: Do you think, and it's a question for everybody, do
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: you think if we had never done Evil Dead twenty
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: thirteen and we jumped right to Evil Dead Rise? There
- 1:34:07Speaker 4: would be the interest? Or do you think Evil Dead
- 1:34:11Speaker 4: twenty thirteen though it did not much new, it just
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: kind of elevated the material to modern expected modern levels
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: of more modern visual style, modern actors. Do you think
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: it would have been as effective? Because I think back
- 1:34:28Speaker 4: to twenty thirteen and being a horror fan at that time,
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: there were people seeing that movie or talking about that
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: movie that I didn't even know. We're in the horror movies.
- 1:34:39Speaker 4: So it was a stepping stone for a lot of
- 1:34:41Speaker 4: people to be introduced to the franchise. And as somebody
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: who loves the original as much, I just love twenty
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: thirteen because it's modernized, because it's I mean, that movie
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: is fucking relentless, dude, it is.
- 1:34:55Speaker 8: It is twisted.
- 1:34:56Speaker 5: Yeah, it's so.
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: Mean from beginning to end, and it's so vicious in
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: its approach, and I think today Alvarez you know, did
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: a great job of bringing it into a modern, you know,
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: a modern sensibility. But I don't think Evil Dead Rise
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: gets the same appeal even though it comes ten years later.
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: If Evil Dead twenty thirteen hadn't been a kind of
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: reminder of this franchise or open up the door for
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: people to go back and watch the other ones, you
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: know what I mean?
- 1:35:29Speaker 8: Interesting? Yeah, yeah, I do know what you mean.
- 1:35:32Speaker 7: I don't think we get Evil Dead Rise without Evil
- 1:35:37Speaker 7: Dead twenty thirteen. Personally, Yeah, I don't think there's a
- 1:35:42Speaker 7: I think I don't want to say dead in the water,
- 1:35:46Speaker 7: but I think the Evil Dead franchises like it's not
- 1:35:51Speaker 7: coming back.
- 1:35:51Speaker 9: If there's no twenty thirteen, like.
- 1:35:54Speaker 6: Just well it probably would.
- 1:35:56Speaker 9: Maybe it wouldn't be a very interesting.
- 1:35:59Speaker 7: But I feel like you need that stepping stone you
- 1:36:03Speaker 7: need you can't go from army and.
- 1:36:06Speaker 9: Darkness to rise.
- 1:36:07Speaker 7: It just it wouldn't work in my opinion, though it
- 1:36:13Speaker 7: you know it does, but think about it, you know,
- 1:36:17Speaker 7: logically and probably from a studio point.
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: Of view, right, well, what if you were Dead twenty
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: thirteen doesn't happen and twenty fifteen Ash versus Evil Dead
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: comes out? Is Ashverds's Evil Dead a result because of
- 1:36:30Speaker 4: renewed interests because of twenty thirteen? Oh yeah, easy right,
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: that's what I think too. I think it.
- 1:36:38Speaker 7: I think the fact that when twenty thirteen happened though,
- 1:36:43Speaker 7: because I mean, it was received fine. I think it's
- 1:36:48Speaker 7: definitely garnered a lot more love since. But the big
- 1:36:52Speaker 7: thing that I remember in twenty thirteen is everyone being
- 1:36:55Speaker 7: pissed that Bruce Campbell wasn't it Who Cared, wasn't directed
- 1:37:00Speaker 7: by Raymie. But everyone was like, so we didn't get anything.
- 1:37:04Speaker 7: We didn't even get a cameo, we didn't get nothing.
- 1:37:08Speaker 7: That's what I remember from the initial release. I don't
- 1:37:10Speaker 7: know what it was like over with you guys.
- 1:37:16Speaker 5: I feel like the twenty thirteen one, I mean that
- 1:37:19Speaker 5: definitely has aged pretty well from what I recall, because
- 1:37:23Speaker 5: I don't remember it being so like loved as much
- 1:37:27Speaker 5: as it is currently. I feel like that that kind
- 1:37:31Speaker 5: of like picked up as time went on. Maybe I'm wrong,
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: but it definitely feels like it's definitely got more of
- 1:37:36Speaker 5: a fan base now at this point.
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: Yeah, because I feel like I feel like you're never
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: you know how people say like you're never going to
- 1:37:46Speaker 4: get slasher movies are never going to feel like they
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: did in the eighties. Saul was never going to feel
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: like it did in twaz and one. I think the
- 1:37:53Speaker 4: Evil Dead twenty thirteen style of horror is no longer.
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: I think we moved on from that, like incredibly visceral,
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: kind of dirty, gross horror movie. And the Kronin seems
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: to tap into that a little bit with like The
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: Mummy and this where it is kind of a return,
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: but it doesn't go as as far. But looking at
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: just you know, like sixty four percent Rotten Tomato with
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: two hundred and four ratings, it also has a sixty
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: four percent Popcorn Meter at fifty thousand ratings, so it
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: seems to be pretty you know, widely praised, and just
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: glancing at some of the reviews and I hate, just
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: so everybody knows, I hate rotten Tomatoes. I'm just using
- 1:38:31Speaker 4: this as a quick resource. Some people talk about how
- 1:38:36Speaker 4: it does lack the creativeness of Evil Dead one and
- 1:38:40Speaker 4: two and a army of darkness and one hundred percent does.
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: It's just interesting to think, kind of where does the
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: franchise go if that doesn't happen, Because you have twenty thirteen.
- 1:38:52Speaker 4: Two years later, ashb Zivielda comes out in Stars, which
- 1:38:55Speaker 4: who the hell had Stars in twenty fifteen? Honestly, I mean,
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: you know which people were excited because Bruce Campbell was back,
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: and I'm sure that helped out Star subscriptions a lot.
- 1:39:06Speaker 4: You still have eight years until Evil Dead Rise comes along,
- 1:39:11Speaker 4: so it's not like there was the most confidence that
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: we could continue going if it took that long. And
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: even when remember even The Rise was not supposed to
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: go to theaters, they actually had such a little faith
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: in it was supposed to go to HBO Max for streaming.
- 1:39:29Speaker 4: So it's kind.
- 1:39:32Speaker 10: Of I think the next film is gonna be pivotal,
- 1:39:35Speaker 10: to be honest with you, because I think how that
- 1:39:37Speaker 10: film is received, there's the dichotomy between the two films
- 1:39:41Speaker 10: are so vast, like there's such different films, and so
- 1:39:45Speaker 10: you know, it's kind of like the again I brought
- 1:39:48Speaker 10: up Halloween earlier, but the Bloomhouse trilogy Bloomhouse, is that
- 1:39:52Speaker 10: right to the twenty eighteen tropes? Not Bloomhouse Yeah, Blumhouse yeah,
- 1:39:56Speaker 10: Blumhouse Yeah, the Bloomhouse trilogy.
- 1:39:58Speaker 8: I love twenty eighteen.
- 1:39:59Speaker 10: I thought Kill was not good, but it was you know,
- 1:40:02Speaker 10: okay enough to like see the possibility of something ending
- 1:40:06Speaker 10: in a good way at that third film really defined
- 1:40:09Speaker 10: the franchise in my opinion, whether you like it or
- 1:40:11Speaker 10: didn't like it. I think now with Evil Dead, I
- 1:40:14Speaker 10: think you're want to see something similar where it's like
- 1:40:15Speaker 10: they were so different the films and I think received
- 1:40:18Speaker 10: in different ways. Also that this next one, I feel
- 1:40:22Speaker 10: like it's going to be pivotal to whether people are
- 1:40:24Speaker 10: like still into the Evil Dead thing, or whether they're like,
- 1:40:26Speaker 10: you know what, this thing has run its course or
- 1:40:29Speaker 10: this thing can stick around like we're gonna we actually
- 1:40:31Speaker 10: love the direction it's going, or like, I you know,
- 1:40:35Speaker 10: I just I feel like this next film is going
- 1:40:37Speaker 10: to play a big role, you know.
- 1:40:39Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, I mean, I think Evil Dead Rise would
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: have been better if when they were chanting Dead by Dawn,
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: if Beth had looked out of the elevator and said
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: evil dies tonight.
- 1:40:50Speaker 10: Exactly with a four foot tall guy playing Michael Myers
- 1:40:57Speaker 10: brought it around, have the movie chasing the wrong guys
- 1:41:00Speaker 10: half besides it's mix up, Yeah.
- 1:41:03Speaker 4: Yeah, which it is interesting they say dead by Dawn
- 1:41:07Speaker 4: in this That is a good Evil Dead to call back.
- 1:41:09Speaker 4: Oh yeah, oh yeah, it's a good Evil Dead two
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: call back. So, guys, before we wrap this up, where
- 1:41:15Speaker 4: do you put Evil Dead Rise in your ranking? And
- 1:41:17Speaker 4: know we kind of talked about this earlier, but I I,
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: you know, I'll go first. How about that? Yeah, no choice,
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: I say, it still lasts for me. But Robbie, I'm sorry,
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: nothing perfect.
- 1:41:35Speaker 8: I respect it, man, I respect your opinion wholeheartedly.
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: I think, I think, I don't. I don't do ratings anymore.
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: I don't star rate anything. But if I had to,
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: just for contextual purposes, I think, if if Evil Dead
- 1:41:48Speaker 4: two is in number one for me with a five,
- 1:41:51Speaker 4: and Evil Dead is a five, Dead twenty thirteen is
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: a four and a half, Army of Darkness is a
- 1:41:56Speaker 4: four and a half, Evil Dead Rise is like a
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: three and a half, which if your franchise ranking across
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: five films is three and a half to five, that's
- 1:42:04Speaker 4: a pretty damn good scale to have. So yes, it
- 1:42:09Speaker 4: might be last in the ranking, but it's not coming
- 1:42:12Speaker 4: from a poor place whatsoever.
- 1:42:17Speaker 8: I'll piggyback.
- 1:42:18Speaker 10: I mean, I agree that in so many ways that like,
- 1:42:21Speaker 10: it's not definitely not my last en franchise, but it
- 1:42:23Speaker 10: is gonna come in after the original three, and that's
- 1:42:26Speaker 10: not a death ment to the movie at all, you know,
- 1:42:28Speaker 10: So that it's hard to like say it's the fourth
- 1:42:32Speaker 10: movie the franchise, because of how great the franchise really is,
- 1:42:36Speaker 10: you know, like Evil Dead og is one of my favorite.
- 1:42:38Speaker 8: Movies of all time.
- 1:42:40Speaker 10: And then you know, Army of Darkness just holds such
- 1:42:42Speaker 10: a special place in my heart, like that movie is
- 1:42:45Speaker 10: just you can't you can't find a single wrong thing
- 1:42:50Speaker 10: about Army of Darkness as far as what I love
- 1:42:52Speaker 10: and appreciate about the genre. You know, it's just it's
- 1:42:55Speaker 10: so much fun. It's got such good dialogue and comedy.
- 1:42:59Speaker 10: And that's really where Ash, you know, is ash, Like
- 1:43:02Speaker 10: the Ash we all know and love, I feel really
- 1:43:05Speaker 10: is Army of Darkness, you know, like that that's that's
- 1:43:07Speaker 10: kind of where that that derives. So it's really hard
- 1:43:10Speaker 10: to put either of those two are put put in
- 1:43:13Speaker 10: front of either of those two, and then Evil Dead
- 1:43:15Speaker 10: two will always hold a special place in my heart
- 1:43:17Speaker 10: because I saw when I was so young, my dad
- 1:43:19Speaker 10: showed it to me, and YadA YadA, And so it
- 1:43:22Speaker 10: comes in right after those, So it is the original
- 1:43:25Speaker 10: three and then it's it's rise and then it's twenty thirteen.
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: Yeah, hell yeah, Chris, what about you.
- 1:43:31Speaker 6: I think I'm gonna have to echo Chris.
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: The Chris is a line. We're we're marauding right now, man,
- 1:43:39Speaker 4: we're shunting together.
- 1:43:40Speaker 5: No, I don't want to get caught up in that.
- 1:43:45Speaker 6: Well, it depends on the writings.
- 1:43:50Speaker 7: But yeah, I think I think it's at the bottom.
- 1:43:55Speaker 7: But when once again it is, it is a stuff franchise.
- 1:44:02Speaker 7: I can't think of another franchise that tops out my
- 1:44:07Speaker 7: like top kind of horror franchise.
- 1:44:09Speaker 9: Evil deads right at the top for me.
- 1:44:13Speaker 7: And yeah, as as everyone said, it's it's just a
- 1:44:18Speaker 7: banger after a banger after a banger, And I mean,
- 1:44:23Speaker 7: I'm probably even that Evil Dead is right at the top,
- 1:44:27Speaker 7: and I'd probably go one, two three because I don't
- 1:44:30Speaker 7: have as much of an affinity of Army of Darkness,
- 1:44:34Speaker 7: which it's one of those films that I didn't really see,
- 1:44:37Speaker 7: but my other half absolutely adores it.
- 1:44:40Speaker 6: So in the last five years, I think.
- 1:44:42Speaker 7: I've watched Army of Darkness more than I have in
- 1:44:45Speaker 7: the other thirty five years of my life. Oh yeah,
- 1:44:49Speaker 7: So it's slowly creeping up there, but yeah, it's it's
- 1:44:54Speaker 7: a hard one. And yeah, it just there's something about
- 1:44:57Speaker 7: twenty thirteen that just reawakens and everything for me, And
- 1:45:02Speaker 7: it was such a pivot switch for film and horror films.
- 1:45:09Speaker 9: So I think it just it just caps it out.
- 1:45:13Speaker 7: And as you said, once everything's around that three and
- 1:45:18Speaker 7: a half to five star range.
- 1:45:21Speaker 9: I mean you do know right on some some ryus
- 1:45:25Speaker 9: Cameron did break it.
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: Yeah, come on, Steve, we got to combine forces and
- 1:45:30Speaker 4: we got to get to the parking rage. Dude there.
- 1:45:34Speaker 5: It's uh, yeah, I don't I don't think it's too
- 1:45:38Speaker 5: far off. I definitely feel like Evil Dead Rise. Like
- 1:45:42Speaker 5: the one thing I remember mentioning to Chris before we
- 1:45:44Speaker 5: recorded this episode was I think going back and rewatching it,
- 1:45:49Speaker 5: it just made me appreciate everything that Sam Raimi had
- 1:45:55Speaker 5: done before this on so many levels. And I know
- 1:45:59Speaker 5: that you can I'm close to it, but I never
- 1:46:01Speaker 5: feel like it quite hits that same mark. I feel
- 1:46:03Speaker 5: like maybe Fetti al for Is definitely did a good
- 1:46:06Speaker 5: job kind of enhancing what Sam Raimi had already done.
- 1:46:09Speaker 5: But yeah, Evil Dead Rise would probably be towards the
- 1:46:12Speaker 5: bottom of my ranking, and twenty thirteen would be next up,
- 1:46:18Speaker 5: Army Darkness, Evil Dead two, and then Evil Dead at
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: the top list. I love people Dead, Evil Dead. I
- 1:46:26Speaker 5: have such fond memories with that movie, and it's just
- 1:46:28Speaker 5: a a special movie for me.
- 1:46:31Speaker 4: Oh yeah, dude, yeah, I love I mean Evil Dead
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: two became my favorite. As I got older, the Evil
- 1:46:37Speaker 4: Dead was always my favorite, and then for some reason,
- 1:46:39Speaker 4: I maybe I'd developed a sense of humor or what,
- 1:46:41Speaker 4: but Evil Dead two just became, you know, just like
- 1:46:46Speaker 4: a pinnacle for me of how to blend comedy and horror,
- 1:46:50Speaker 4: but also to like, I'm such a nerd for the
- 1:46:52Speaker 4: technical side of filmmaking. If you watch either of those
- 1:46:56Speaker 4: original Evil Dead movies there, it's fucking phenomenal, how creative
- 1:47:01Speaker 4: and how well utilized. Like Evil Dead two has one
- 1:47:05Speaker 4: of the best stop motion sequences in my opinion. Oh yeah,
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: Ever in the horror genre, you know, with the dancing sequence,
- 1:47:13Speaker 4: and they just utilized so many tools and it's so ridiculous,
- 1:47:16Speaker 4: and yet it's still really scary, you know, it never
- 1:47:21Speaker 4: ever dropped the scare element of it. And there are
- 1:47:25Speaker 4: moments of that movie that freaked me the hell out,
- 1:47:27Speaker 4: but then I'm laughing ten seconds later.
- 1:47:31Speaker 5: I think A big part of it, especially with those
- 1:47:33Speaker 5: films is you know, Sam Raimie, Bruce Campbell, they're all
- 1:47:37Speaker 5: from the same city that I currently live in now,
- 1:47:40Speaker 5: So having that a little bit more affinity for that,
- 1:47:43Speaker 5: and had a chance to see the original one at
- 1:47:47Speaker 5: the same theater that it premiered years ago. I saw
- 1:47:52Speaker 5: that in Halloween last year. So it's just like, you know,
- 1:47:55Speaker 5: there's I think that that gets like an extra boost
- 1:47:59Speaker 5: in my eyes. I agree with you. I mean, Evil
- 1:48:01Speaker 5: Dad too, is is quite the accomplishment. And then you know,
- 1:48:04Speaker 5: years later he obviously did Spider Man that had its
- 1:48:07Speaker 5: own lasting impact on our culture.
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, well fun fact. Uh you know, we are
- 1:48:15Speaker 4: still a half hour this episode is still a half
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: hour shorter than Lee Cronin is The Mummy.
- 1:48:22Speaker 6: I mean, I can I can make it.
- 1:48:24Speaker 7: I can make up that run time if we want
- 1:48:25Speaker 7: to dive a little to I do have a question
- 1:48:29Speaker 7: for all of you, actually, would you ever want Raymie
- 1:48:34Speaker 7: and Campbell to return to the franchise?
- 1:48:37Speaker 10: Now I can't say no to that question, Like do
- 1:48:42Speaker 10: I think it'll be awesome? I don't know, But like
- 1:48:45Speaker 10: as a as a huge fan of the franchise, I
- 1:48:47Speaker 10: just I know no, possibly I could ever say.
- 1:48:49Speaker 5: No to that.
- 1:48:50Speaker 7: Your eyes lit up like a kid on Christmas there,
- 1:48:53Speaker 7: I mean, like you're telling me, you know that.
- 1:48:56Speaker 6: Not that I have any pull at newline to do that.
- 1:49:00Speaker 10: Oh you know what, like just seeing just just seeing
- 1:49:04Speaker 10: Bruce on on the screen again, would I would mark
- 1:49:07Speaker 10: out so hard? Yeah, and fingers crossed.
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: Maybe we'll get a cameo and well he does cameo
- 1:49:14Speaker 4: and Evil Dead rise as a voice on the recording.
- 1:49:19Speaker 8: Oh yes, which scene is that again?
- 1:49:21Speaker 4: That during the incantation scene with the vinyl record playing?
- 1:49:24Speaker 8: Oh right, right right, he's.
- 1:49:26Speaker 4: The voice on there. Nice, so you know, you get
- 1:49:28Speaker 4: a little little tast you know, is.
- 1:49:33Speaker 5: He supposed to be like time displaystash or something or
- 1:49:36Speaker 5: I remember him making a comment about like what the
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: voice was supposed to be for.
- 1:49:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not, I'm not too sure, but it's it's
- 1:49:43Speaker 4: nice that he's involved in that way. I mean, I look,
- 1:49:46Speaker 4: I I don't I would love I mean, I would
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: just love for for one of these movies too, like
- 1:49:53Speaker 4: a character to walk into the you know, s mart somewhere,
- 1:49:57Speaker 4: you know what I mean. Like, even if it's like
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: a little call back to that level, I do think
- 1:50:05Speaker 4: the fan inside of me would never say no to
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: them returning. I also think it wouldn't be the same,
- 1:50:14Speaker 4: you know what I mean. It's it's not that I
- 1:50:17Speaker 4: don't think a that would ever happen, but b I
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: don't think it would feel the same as that original run,
- 1:50:23Speaker 4: did you know what I mean? Maybe with Bruce coming back.
- 1:50:26Speaker 4: But I think Sam Raimi, you know, I think I
- 1:50:30Speaker 4: think he can kind of just leave this behind him
- 1:50:33Speaker 4: as far as like directing, and let the young boys
- 1:50:35Speaker 4: take it over, you know what I mean. So I
- 1:50:38Speaker 4: don't know. I didn't see send Help yet, so I
- 1:50:41Speaker 4: don't know how modern day Sam Raimi is doing. I
- 1:50:43Speaker 4: know he's remaking magic.
- 1:50:46Speaker 10: I will say, like, you know what film Sam raimis
- 1:50:51Speaker 10: really just doesn't get taught about enough, which feels like
- 1:50:53Speaker 10: something Bruce Campbell could have done is Drag.
- 1:50:56Speaker 9: Me to Hell.
- 1:50:58Speaker 10: Drag Me at Hell is oh freaking good. And missus
- 1:51:02Speaker 10: Ganush feels like a deadite. I mean like she really does,
- 1:51:06Speaker 10: and like all the you know, the CGI that they
- 1:51:09Speaker 10: use with her and all the practical effects and craziness
- 1:51:12Speaker 10: that they use with her feels like feels so evil dead,
- 1:51:15Speaker 10: so like I feel like they could do something and
- 1:51:18Speaker 10: it's over the top and it's comedic and it's funny,
- 1:51:20Speaker 10: but it's also a terrifying movie.
- 1:51:22Speaker 8: So I feel like I still got it.
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: Man, I don't know, Yeah, I mean I would. I
- 1:51:27Speaker 4: would point everybody to one of my favorite films that
- 1:51:31Speaker 4: Sam Raimi has ever been involved in, Scott Spiegel's Intruder.
- 1:51:35Speaker 4: I think that's one of the best slasher movies of
- 1:51:37Speaker 4: uh Grady ever talks about. It's a fucking incredible movie,
- 1:51:41Speaker 4: wicked practical effects in that one. There's some nasty shit.
- 1:51:45Speaker 4: You get to see Sam and Ted Remy killed in it.
- 1:51:48Speaker 4: It's a lot of fun, very much in the Evil
- 1:51:51Speaker 4: Dead like feel. It's that same family you know of
- 1:51:53Speaker 4: friends making a horror movie. So you know, we'll see man,
- 1:51:59Speaker 4: there's always a chance it's you know, in this day
- 1:52:01Speaker 4: and age, we live in a world of nostalgia and
- 1:52:04Speaker 4: and people wanting, uh, you know, things to feel like
- 1:52:07Speaker 4: they did. So maybe they do come back, you know
- 1:52:09Speaker 4: what I mean, Maybe there's another ash fors Evil Dead
- 1:52:11Speaker 4: season out there. When when when Bruce Campbell recovers from
- 1:52:16Speaker 4: from his current you know, medical situation, which I think
- 1:52:18Speaker 4: we all hope the absolute best for you know, what
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: I mean. So let's wrap this up, Evil Dead Rise.
- 1:52:26Speaker 4: You know what's really crazy is we talked about all
- 1:52:29Speaker 4: these events that happened right on our right on our floor,
- 1:52:32Speaker 4: and we heard nothing. I think that's the craziest.
- 1:52:35Speaker 10: Uh did you guys hear anything outside of some whispers
- 1:52:38Speaker 10: in the wind maybe.
- 1:52:40Speaker 6: Crest that the building still. I mean, we've we've had
- 1:52:43Speaker 6: this eviction notice for like years.
- 1:52:45Speaker 9: Now, so.
- 1:52:49Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, it was it was. It was delivered, and
- 1:52:54Speaker 4: I think it fell off my door. I got to
- 1:52:56Speaker 4: find somewhere to live.
- 1:52:58Speaker 5: So is the elevator out of order or.
- 1:53:04Speaker 4: You know, I think we should go check. I think
- 1:53:06Speaker 4: somebody needs to go check. I think Chris lives furthest
- 1:53:09Speaker 4: down the hall.
- 1:53:10Speaker 7: So I'm right next to that guy who's just left
- 1:53:16Speaker 7: his apartment, but he has got the fire escape.
- 1:53:18Speaker 4: So yes, yeah, that's right, that's right. We none of us.
- 1:53:22Speaker 4: Only one apartment has a fire escape.
- 1:53:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:53:28Speaker 4: Hell all right, boys, Well thank you so much for
- 1:53:33Speaker 4: coming on and doing this with us. Thanks total blast.
