- Lucas: Hello again, Luna, and welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and we're picking up the mic for episode 220. Luna: Hey Lucas! So glad to be here. Last time we were learning about animals, right? Paka, mbwa... Lucas: Exactly, paka for cat, mbwa for dog. Today, let's take a trip to the post office. Have you ever sent a letter or a package while traveling? Luna: Oh, definitely. I remember trying to send a postcard once and I had no idea what to say. This is going to be so useful. Lucas: It is. So first, let's learn how to ask where the post office is. Listen closely: Posta iko wapi? Luna: Posta iko wapi? That sounds like... where is the post office? Lucas: That's it. Posta iko wapi? You can use that in any town. Let's say it together. Posta iko wapi? Luna: Posta iko wapi? Posta iko wapi. Lucas: Perfect. Now, once you're at the post office, you might need a stamp. In Swahili, that's Nataka stempu. Nataka means I want, stempu is stamp. Luna: Nataka stempu. I want a stamp. That's easy because we already know Nataka from before. Lucas: Right, Nataka works for so many things. Nataka stempu. Try it with me. Nataka stempu. Luna: Nataka stempu. Lucas: Great. Now let's imagine you're sending a letter. The verb is kutuma, to send, and for letter we say barua. So, Natuma barua means I am sending a letter. Luna: Natuma barua. I am sending a letter. That's a nice, simple sentence. Lucas: Yes. And you can expand it: Natuma barua. But what if you want to ask how much it costs? You'd say, Barua hii ni kiasi gani? That means how much is this letter? Luna: Barua hii ni kiasi gani? So barua is letter, hii means this, and kiasi gani is how much. That makes sense. Lucas: Exactly. Barua hii ni kiasi gani? Let's practice that. Barua hii ni kiasi gani? Luna: Barua hii ni kiasi gani? That's a mouthful but I think I've got it. Lucas: And if you're sending a package, you say kifurushi. So Natuma kifurushi means I am sending a package. Natuma kifurushi. Luna: Natuma kifurushi. I am sending a package. That's handy for those care packages. Lucas: You got it. Now, let's put these all together in a little scene. Say you walk up to the counter and ask, Posta iko wapi? Then you say, Natuma barua. The clerk asks, Barua hii ni kiasi gani? And you say, Nataka stempu. Luna: Oh, that flows nicely. Let me try. Posta iko wapi? Natuma barua. Barua hii ni kiasi gani? Nataka stempu. Lucas: That was almost perfect. Just a tiny tweak on the last one. Remember, it's Nataka stempu, not Nataka stempu. But you're close. Say it again. Luna: Nataka stempu. Lucas: There you go. And for a package, you'd just swap barua for kifurushi: Natuma kifurushi. Barua hii ni kiasi gani? or Kifurushi hiki ni kiasi gani? But let's keep it simple. Luna: So if I want to send a package, I say Natuma kifurushi. And to ask the price, Kifurushi hiki ni kiasi gani? Lucas: Exactly. You're picking this up so well. Now, Luna, I want to take a quick moment to mention something that keeps this podcast going. Luna: Oh, sure. What is it? Luna: Okay, I'll try them all. Posta iko wapi? Nataka stempu. Natuma barua. Barua hii ni kiasi gani? Natuma kifurushi. Lucas: That was fantastic. You really nailed it. See how easy that was? Luna: It feels good. I could actually use these next time I'm sending something. Lucas: Absolutely. And remember, you can mix and match. For instance, if you need stamps and want to send a letter, you can say Nataka stempu na natuma barua. But let's not overload today's episode. Just keep practicing what we learned. Luna: Sounds good. So, just to recap: Posta iko wapi? is asking for the post office, Nataka stempu is asking for a stamp, Natuma barua is sending a letter, Barua hii ni kiasi gani? is asking the price, and Natuma kifurushi is sending a package. Lucas: You've got it perfectly. Let's do one more quick repetition to lock it in. Repeat after me: Posta iko wapi? Luna: Posta iko wapi? Lucas: Nataka stempu. Luna: Nataka stempu. Lucas: Natuma barua. Luna: Natuma barua. Lucas: Barua hii ni kiasi gani? Luna: Barua hii ni kiasi gani? Lucas: And Natuma kifurushi. Luna: Natuma kifurushi. Lucas: Wonderful. I hope you feel ready for your next trip to the post office. Remember to practice these phrases until we meet again. Luna: Yes, and don't forget to tune in next time for more Swahili fun. This is Luna and Lucas signing off from Fexingo. Lucas: Take care, everyone. Kwaheri!
