- 1:13Speaker 3: But back to our guest.
- 1:15Speaker 2: You may have heard of a little movie called Three
- 1:17Speaker 2: Wiser Men and a Boy yet he co wrote that,
- 1:21Speaker 2: but he also has two more Hallmark movies dropping and
- 1:26Speaker 2: a Netflix dropping this season. So we've got the Santa
- 1:29Speaker 2: claus On Hallmark, Under the Lights on Hallmark Mystery, and
- 1:34Speaker 2: the best title of the Holiday season, Hot Frosty dropping
- 1:38Speaker 2: on Netflix.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Welcome to Wrestling Line.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Oh, thank you both for having me. This is fantastic,
- 1:45Speaker 1: This is a thrill. I'm so excited to talk to
- 1:47Speaker 1: you both, and I'm excited to talk about all these things.
- 1:51Speaker 1: It's been a crazy year.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So can we just ask if your head is absolutely exploding.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Over the incredible year you're having.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It's exploding with nerves, it's exploding with you know, like
- 2:07Speaker 1: it really matters to me. And hopefully this comes through
- 2:10Speaker 1: in the movies that I've done, in the movies that
- 2:13Speaker 1: I'll continue to make, Like I really want them to
- 2:17Speaker 1: be good. I want to be one of the people,
- 2:21Speaker 1: you know, like I've gotten to know Nina Wineman a
- 2:23Speaker 1: little bit, you know, when people see Nina Wineman's name
- 2:27Speaker 1: on a project, they go like, oh, this is gonna
- 2:28Speaker 1: be a good one, right, Like I would like to
- 2:31Speaker 1: be one of those names. And so I put a
- 2:34Speaker 1: lot of myself into my projects, and I work really
- 2:38Speaker 1: hard to try to make them as good as they
- 2:40Speaker 1: can be. And so hopefully these all turn out to
- 2:44Speaker 1: the audience's liking and I get to continue to do this,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and yeah, I mean, you know, what can I say?
- 2:52Speaker 2: My understanding is that Hot Frosty, which is your Netflix
- 2:55Speaker 2: drop this year, was a script that or an idea
- 2:58Speaker 2: at least that had been for a long time.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Is that correct?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, Hot Frosty came to be because, uh, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 1: you come up with funny ideas as a writer, and
- 3:14Speaker 1: you come up with ideas that you think, well, this
- 3:16Speaker 1: will never happen. So I'm just gonna tell my friends
- 3:18Speaker 1: at parties. And you know, I kept telling people about
- 3:22Speaker 1: this idea for a movie where the pitch is what
- 3:24Speaker 1: if Frosty the Snowman when he came to life was
- 3:26Speaker 1: just a really hot dude? You know that was And
- 3:29Speaker 1: the response is normally that right, And so I called
- 3:31Speaker 1: it Hot Frosty, and ultimately I pitched it at parties
- 3:36Speaker 1: enough that I thought, well, maybe I should write this,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and so during the pandemic, I just I went for it.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I wrote it myself. I really liked how it turned out.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I shipped it around. The good people at Muse picked
- 3:51Speaker 1: it up and partnered us with Netflix for it, and
- 3:55Speaker 1: I've got to say, I'm just I'm thrilled. I I'm
- 3:58Speaker 1: thrilled that exists. It's one of those things you never
- 4:00Speaker 1: would have thought existed, you Like, I wrote it for fun.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I wrote it because I thought it would be funny
- 4:05Speaker 1: and it would make myself laugh. And now it's real.
- 4:08Speaker 1: So how cool is that?
- 4:10Speaker 2: Isn't it cool to be like, Yeah, I have a
- 4:12Speaker 2: movie on Netflix this holiday season? Like, I mean, I
- 4:15Speaker 2: know Hallmark, Like I get that that's exciting too, but
- 4:18Speaker 2: like Netflix is Netflix.
- 4:22Speaker 3: That's really cool.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I again, a bit of anxiety, a lot of excitement.
- 4:29Speaker 1: You know, it's a very different audience, right Like Hallmark.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Hallmark audiences know what to expect in these movies. There's
- 4:36Speaker 1: there's brand loyalty, right, Like, there's a lot of if
- 4:41Speaker 1: you like this Hallmark movie, generally, this is kind of
- 4:44Speaker 1: your vibe, right, and so you can sort of play
- 4:46Speaker 1: inside that sandbox and you can stretch what a Hallmark
- 4:50Speaker 1: movie can be, but ultimately it's it's a Hallmark movie.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Netflix people go there to watch anything. People go there
- 4:58Speaker 1: to watch stranger things, they go there to watch which
- 5:01Speaker 1: whatever else. Honestly, I don't watch a ton of TV shows.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I'm sure there's a ton of things that people binge
- 5:06Speaker 1: on Netflix that I just have no idea exist. They
- 5:09Speaker 1: go there to watch the Irishman, right, They they're watch
- 5:11Speaker 1: like all sorts of cool things, and this holiday season
- 5:14Speaker 1: they're gonna watch Hot Frosty hopefully. What does that mean?
- 5:19Speaker 1: I mean, like, who's gonna tune in? Like? What are
- 5:22Speaker 1: the audience types of people that are gonna go yes,
- 5:25Speaker 1: I definitely want to watch this. And are those the
- 5:27Speaker 1: same types of people that like holiday romance? I don't know,
- 5:32Speaker 1: you know, I think they, at bare minimum will find
- 5:35Speaker 1: a lot to laugh about. It's very funny. I've seen it.
- 5:40Speaker 1: It's great. But you know, even if there's somebody who's
- 5:44Speaker 1: like a little a little more reluctant on like the
- 5:46Speaker 1: romance part, which I feel like, you know, sometimes people
- 5:49Speaker 1: on Netflix, I feel like there's sort of a quick
- 5:52Speaker 1: dismissal of though this is corny because it's because it's earnest,
- 5:56Speaker 1: because it's heartfelt, because it's not like Ladled with Irony, Right,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I think that audiences sometimes go that route. But even
- 6:04Speaker 1: if they are a little reluctant on that side, there's
- 6:07Speaker 1: so much to laugh about. Dustin is so funny. Craig Robinson,
- 6:10Speaker 1: Joe Trulio, Katie Mix and Lauren Holly. I mean it's
- 6:14Speaker 1: just it's a murderer's row, a phenomenal cast. Lacey obviously
- 6:18Speaker 1: is fantastic in it, you know. So yeah, I'm really
- 6:22Speaker 1: really excited. I hope the audience enjoys it as much
- 6:25Speaker 1: as I do. I mean, that's really all you can
- 6:27Speaker 1: hope for at the end of the day. You make
- 6:28Speaker 1: a movie for yourself, and you hope that other people
- 6:33Speaker 1: like it as much as you do. And luckily, I
- 6:34Speaker 1: really like Hot Frosty.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So so you have three movies on Hallmark this year.
- 6:42Speaker 2: How did it come to be that you had that
- 6:45Speaker 2: many at once?
- 6:48Speaker 1: Ill? Luck, I mean, more or less, I got some
- 6:54Speaker 1: cool opportunities this year. You know, two of two of
- 7:01Speaker 1: the projects were things where you know, I came on
- 7:05Speaker 1: to something. Santa Class is something that sort of came
- 7:10Speaker 1: came more like, you know, completely started from scratch, but
- 7:14Speaker 1: very different types of movies. Yeah, I don't know how
- 7:19Speaker 1: they happened. I'm stunned that they did happen. You know,
- 7:22Speaker 1: two of them started shooting like very late summer.
- 7:26Speaker 2: To like to now, Like, I mean, the Santa Class
- 7:31Speaker 2: is in production. It may have wrapped, but I mean
- 7:34Speaker 2: it's close.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Yeah, dude. I mean, I know how they do it.
- 7:42Speaker 1: You know, they know exactly what they're doing. The team
- 7:44Speaker 1: is fantastic. I got to visit the set for Santa Claus,
- 7:48Speaker 1: got to meet everybody there. I mean, Lucy is an
- 7:52Speaker 1: outstanding director. I'm incredibly blessed that she's done two of
- 7:56Speaker 1: my movies this year. Very very cool. The cinematographers, like
- 8:01Speaker 1: the people who make the sets, the designers, the costume people,
- 8:05Speaker 1: my goodness, I mean like they are just so on
- 8:08Speaker 1: top of their game. I don't know how they all
- 8:11Speaker 1: happen this year. I was definitely wondering whether some of
- 8:13Speaker 1: them would get bumped. I'm just feeling lucky, you know.
- 8:17Speaker 2: To me, I'm like, yeah, I know how it happened
- 8:19Speaker 2: this year because you had in Mary Measure, which was
- 8:26Speaker 2: such a fun movie, and then the Santa Summit last
- 8:29Speaker 2: year kind of like came out of nowhere.
- 8:30Speaker 3: It was so fun and so different.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And I just think there's a lot of great Hallmark writers,
- 8:38Speaker 2: but I think you bring something different to the table
- 8:41Speaker 2: that spices up the collection of movies that we're getting. So,
- 8:46Speaker 2: I mean, as viewers and as people who consume a
- 8:49Speaker 2: lot of Hallmark content. To me, I'm like, yeah, we
- 8:52Speaker 2: know why they're bringing this guy in.
- 8:54Speaker 1: That's very nice. That's very nice of you to say things.
- 8:57Speaker 2: It's true though, you got to visit the set of
- 9:00Speaker 2: the Santa Claus. You said, what's your level of involvement
- 9:04Speaker 2: in person as these movies are shooting typically, or with
- 9:07Speaker 2: these other movies.
- 9:09Speaker 1: In person? It's limited, right. I live in La these
- 9:13Speaker 1: movies are in Canada. Right. I try really hard to
- 9:16Speaker 1: visit sets of movies when I can, because I think
- 9:21Speaker 1: one of the things that I can hopefully bring to
- 9:24Speaker 1: the table as a writer and a collaborator and everything else,
- 9:27Speaker 1: is these movies belong to everybody. Like when I'm done
- 9:35Speaker 1: writing and I hand it to a director, when I
- 9:38Speaker 1: hand it to actors, or when Hallmark hansit to actors,
- 9:41Speaker 1: the producers handed to actors, then it becomes theirs, too, right,
- 9:45Speaker 1: And so then they have things that they want to
- 9:48Speaker 1: bring to the table. There are ways in which this story,
- 9:52Speaker 1: you know, touches them, affects them. And obviously when designers,
- 9:57Speaker 1: when everybody else gets involved, they have their own vision
- 10:01Speaker 1: for it, right, And so I like to visit to
- 10:04Speaker 1: show people, Hey, I'm not I'm not overly precious I
- 10:08Speaker 1: do think that if you need like a line of dialogue,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I'm probably the best person to ask. But also I
- 10:15Speaker 1: love hearing other people's ideas. I love seeing what people
- 10:18Speaker 1: bring to the table. I love talking with people about it.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I certainly love getting to know the actors, getting to
- 10:23Speaker 1: know the talent so that when I write for them
- 10:25Speaker 1: in the future, I know them all the better. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: can write for them even better. And just making friends
- 10:31Speaker 1: with these people too. You know, I am just again
- 10:36Speaker 1: this year was very cool and that I got to
- 10:37Speaker 1: make friends with a lot of really cool people. I
- 10:40Speaker 1: got to make some cool movies with a lot of
- 10:42Speaker 1: really cool people. And again, I'm just I'm excited to
- 10:46Speaker 1: see what the audience thinks. I think Santa Claus is
- 10:49Speaker 1: going to be really special. I think it's going to
- 10:51Speaker 1: be really special. I don't know what I can say.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I don't think I can say anything about it, but
- 10:56Speaker 1: you obviously know who the talent is. The stars of
- 10:59Speaker 1: it that's already announced are both are outstanding. The director
- 11:04Speaker 1: Lucy is outstanding. The premise is very funny. It's very funny. Yeah,
- 11:11Speaker 1: it's it's gonna be interesting to see that late in
- 11:13Speaker 1: the game. December fourteenth, I believe, you know, if you
- 11:17Speaker 1: are ready for like a full blown comedy, like, that's
- 11:20Speaker 1: definitely what this is. So I'm I'm excited for people
- 11:24Speaker 1: to see that one. I'm excited for all of them.
- 11:25Speaker 1: They're all great in their own way. Yeah, those keep sliding.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I don't know what's going on. I think because I washed,
- 11:32Speaker 1: I keep adjusting my hat. People watching this on YouTube,
- 11:34Speaker 1: I my hat, I think as I washed my hair
- 11:36Speaker 1: like an hour ago. My hair, I guess, is really slick.
- 11:39Speaker 1: And I moved my eyebrows a lot when I and
- 11:41Speaker 1: so my hat keeps just sliding farther and farther back.
- 11:45Speaker 1: This is like the danger of doing a podcast on video,
- 11:47Speaker 1: you know, I get. Yeah, I asked like a Wendy
- 11:50Speaker 1: before we started, I was like, how's my lighting? Am
- 11:51Speaker 1: I okay? Like going on?
- 11:54Speaker 2: So the challenge is not looking at yourself the entire time.
- 11:57Speaker 3: But I have never mastered that at all.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm afraid that my hat is just gonna be
- 12:03Speaker 1: like teetered on top at some point if I don't
- 12:05Speaker 1: look every once in a while, you know. But I
- 12:07Speaker 1: committed to the hat now and now I have to
- 12:08Speaker 1: see it. I can't switched to no hat in the
- 12:11Speaker 1: middle of an interview that that would not work at all.
- 12:16Speaker 2: So we talked about the Hallmark versus Netflix of it
- 12:18Speaker 2: all with from your end, was the experience different working
- 12:22Speaker 2: with these two networks.
- 12:26Speaker 1: The biggest difference is money, obviously, Yeah, right. You know
- 12:29Speaker 1: Hot Frosty they closed down an entire town center for
- 12:35Speaker 1: a while. Basically, you know, it was covered in snow.
- 12:39Speaker 1: And I don't mean like the snow blankets. I mean
- 12:42Speaker 1: like the the stuff that the stuff that like uh,
- 12:47Speaker 1: Tim Burton and Germo del Toro use, you know, right,
- 12:50Speaker 1: like the real stuff. You can feel the scale of
- 12:54Speaker 1: it a lot. I got to visit the Hot Frosty
- 12:56Speaker 1: set as well, and that was really exciting too, to
- 12:58Speaker 1: meet all of those people. I think that you feel
- 13:01Speaker 1: the scale of it a lot more. And also when
- 13:05Speaker 1: it comes to Hallmark movies, every once in a while
- 13:08Speaker 1: you'll run into budget things. I think that sometimes when
- 13:13Speaker 1: people see something in a movie that they sort of
- 13:15Speaker 1: like gripe about, or they're like, oh, this doesn't make
- 13:17Speaker 1: sense or whatever, the odds are so strong that it's
- 13:20Speaker 1: just like something happened during production and there wasn't money
- 13:24Speaker 1: to do it the way that you know it was
- 13:26Speaker 1: conceptualized or what have you. That's no knock against Hallmark,
- 13:30Speaker 1: by the way, I think that the fact that they
- 13:32Speaker 1: do this the way that they do it is quite brilliant.
- 13:36Speaker 1: And they're able to make a lot of movies. They're
- 13:38Speaker 1: able to make a lot of good movies. They're able
- 13:40Speaker 1: to sort of function as a movie studio, like an
- 13:43Speaker 1: old school movie studio. They're able to make movies to
- 13:48Speaker 1: build up stars, you know, to sort of create brand
- 13:52Speaker 1: ambassadors for you know, their whole thing. I mean, obviously,
- 13:56Speaker 1: I know you two are going on the cruise, right,
- 13:59Speaker 1: I mean, how who gets to do that? Right? There's
- 14:03Speaker 1: no Warner Brothers cruise that I know of, There's no
- 14:06Speaker 1: you know, like so, I think when I say that
- 14:10Speaker 1: there are occasionally budgetings on Hallmark, that's not to denigrde
- 14:12Speaker 1: That's just the reality of the situation. Some of the
- 14:15Speaker 1: movies have a little less money Netflix loves to throw
- 14:21Speaker 1: on her around. I think a little more. You know,
- 14:25Speaker 1: this isn't like a monster budget movie. It's still a
- 14:27Speaker 1: budget movie. But in terms of the question, which I've
- 14:31Speaker 1: rambled away from, I think sometimes when you pitch for Hallmark, oh,
- 14:37Speaker 1: it's a thing with a ton of snow when there's
- 14:41Speaker 1: a whole fleet of snowmen and there's whatever. Then you'll
- 14:45Speaker 1: get like, come on, man, we can't do that. Yeah,
- 14:49Speaker 1: But with Netflix, they're like, can we add more snowmen?
- 14:52Speaker 1: You know sometimes sometimes it's like that, So Netflix, can
- 14:56Speaker 1: you see gi a little more? You know, I don't know,
- 15:00Speaker 1: it's I'm interested to try to work with Netflix again
- 15:05Speaker 1: when the future, hopefully how Frosty goes really well. We're
- 15:09Speaker 1: trying to figure out some things, right, it would be
- 15:11Speaker 1: cool to continue to explore what Netflix can do. I'll
- 15:14Speaker 1: certainly be even more in tune with what a Netflix
- 15:17Speaker 1: audience might want as a result of seeing how see
- 15:21Speaker 1: if they liked off Rosty, seeing if they didn't like something,
- 15:24Speaker 1: you know, learning some lessons, trying to make the next
- 15:26Speaker 1: thing even better than the previous thing. But I anticipate
- 15:30Speaker 1: doing more movies for Hallmark than Netflix, obviously, just because
- 15:34Speaker 1: a Hallmark is such a machine. Man. I like, they
- 15:37Speaker 1: They're perfect at what they do.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Well, and when Hallmark finds people that they like to
- 15:42Speaker 2: work with, they continue to work with them.
- 15:44Speaker 4: You know.
- 15:45Speaker 2: It's why we see a lot of the same writers
- 15:47Speaker 2: and a lot of the same directors, and of course
- 15:48Speaker 2: the same actors. So yeah, I hope that for you too.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Speaking of people Hallmark likes, when you worked on Three
- 15:55Speaker 2: Wiser Men, you kind of collaborated with Kim, really sessed
- 15:59Speaker 2: at Paul Campbell.
- 16:02Speaker 3: We love their writing.
- 16:03Speaker 2: What was it like coming into like you have not
- 16:05Speaker 2: only an established kind of situation, right, but also these
- 16:09Speaker 2: established writers. What was it like working together the three
- 16:13Speaker 2: of you?
- 16:15Speaker 1: It was terrifying. Yeah, first, and I think that everybody,
- 16:19Speaker 1: hopefully I'm not. I don't want to speak for Paul
- 16:21Speaker 1: and Kim here. I think that everybody in the same
- 16:25Speaker 1: way that I talked about before. Once something is out
- 16:27Speaker 1: in the world, it belongs to everybody. And obviously, when
- 16:31Speaker 1: you have something as big as Three Wise Men, something
- 16:33Speaker 1: is for Hallmark iconic as Three Wise Men. With that comes,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I think a lot of people have their ideas of
- 16:42Speaker 1: what they want, what they want from a sequel, from
- 16:46Speaker 1: further exploration of this world. I think that I was
- 16:50Speaker 1: very fortunate to have the opportunity to join, but I
- 16:54Speaker 1: was very cognizant when I joined of this is a
- 16:58Speaker 1: lot of pressure. These are Paul and Kim's babies. I really,
- 17:02Speaker 1: first and foremost want Paul and Kim to be happy
- 17:05Speaker 1: with any work that I do want it. It's the
- 17:07Speaker 1: baby of so many people, right, Like so many people
- 17:11Speaker 1: it's like their favorite Hallmark movie. So then you feel
- 17:14Speaker 1: that as well, they want this one to be bigger,
- 17:17Speaker 1: right like Paul and Kim and you know Tyler and
- 17:21Speaker 1: Andrew when everybody, there's this expectation that they put on themselves,
- 17:26Speaker 1: and there's this expectation of trying to achieve the best
- 17:31Speaker 1: possible product, trying to tell the best possible story that
- 17:35Speaker 1: they put on themselves. And so I really wanted to
- 17:39Speaker 1: feel that pressure too. I really wanted to like step
- 17:42Speaker 1: up to the level of Paul and Kim and that
- 17:45Speaker 1: team with what I would bring to the table. Again,
- 17:48Speaker 1: I don't know that I'm at liberty to talk about
- 17:50Speaker 1: exactly what I brought to the table, but maybe you'll
- 17:55Speaker 1: see in some scenes a familiar style of like Russell
- 17:59Speaker 1: esque band, you know, like you'll maybe maybe a character
- 18:04Speaker 1: you might be like, oh, this idea, I don't know,
- 18:07Speaker 1: this could have been a rustle thing. This could have been.
- 18:09Speaker 1: But I'll also say that, you know, when you come
- 18:13Speaker 1: on to work with something with other writers on a project,
- 18:17Speaker 1: sometimes you're brought on because it's not meeting what people
- 18:23Speaker 1: wanted it to be. And that's just not the case
- 18:25Speaker 1: with Paul and Kim. I mean, they're just too good.
- 18:27Speaker 1: They're just too too good. And when I was handed,
- 18:32Speaker 1: when I got the opportunity to come on and I
- 18:34Speaker 1: saw what they had done already, I thought, this is
- 18:38Speaker 1: gonna be really funny, This is gonna be really good.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Fans are really gonna like this. What what can I
- 18:45Speaker 1: do to help? You know? I was an assistant on
- 18:48Speaker 1: this project, you know, and I was really really grateful
- 18:50Speaker 1: for the opportunity. And now I've gotten to know Paul
- 18:52Speaker 1: and Kim a little bit, and they just I think
- 18:57Speaker 1: they think about these movies really smartly. I think that they,
- 19:02Speaker 1: like me, really want to, you know, push to the
- 19:06Speaker 1: outsides of the sandbox and see what they can get
- 19:09Speaker 1: away with and what they can accomplish. They want to
- 19:12Speaker 1: make the best possible product. They want to stand on,
- 19:15Speaker 1: you know, their name. It's also for Paul and Kim
- 19:17Speaker 1: it's a lot easier, I think, to feel that sort
- 19:22Speaker 1: of wanting their name to mean something because their faces
- 19:25Speaker 1: are also in these things. Right, Like, there's such press
- 19:28Speaker 1: I can't even imagine the pressure of being the actor
- 19:31Speaker 1: who has to carry one of these movies. Writing is
- 19:34Speaker 1: enough pressure for me. I'm good. So yeah, I'm really
- 19:39Speaker 1: excited for fans to see it. I'm really excited to
- 19:43Speaker 1: see what like makes the final cut. There's also just
- 19:46Speaker 1: a bevy of great stuff in here, and I have
- 19:49Speaker 1: no doubt that on set that they I'm sure came
- 19:54Speaker 1: up with bits. I'm sure they came up with hilarious
- 19:57Speaker 1: stuff to add. And you know, again, all the best design,
- 20:00Speaker 1: all the best people work on this sort of movie.
- 20:02Speaker 1: So I'm really excited. I'm really really excited. I think
- 20:05Speaker 1: fans are gonna really like it. And furthermore, I should
- 20:10Speaker 1: add that if Hallmark people want more sequels to things,
- 20:16Speaker 1: supporting sequels to properties that you really like and showing
- 20:22Speaker 1: you know, the people upstairs. Hey, we want sequels. We
- 20:25Speaker 1: want more worlds built out. We want the Wiser Men's,
- 20:30Speaker 1: the Cherry LANs, the there's another one this year that
- 20:32Speaker 1: I'm blanking on, but like the hall Out, the Holly's right, Like,
- 20:35Speaker 1: go go watch those and tell you know, tweet about them,
- 20:40Speaker 1: Instagram about them. Say Hey, we want to explore some
- 20:44Speaker 1: of these worlds more on Hallmark. We want these franchises built.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I think the.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Hallmark fan loves a franchise. We want a Santa Summit franchise,
- 20:52Speaker 2: by the way, So I know you can't say anything.
- 20:56Speaker 1: But just that I'm thinking with prett selfishly, Meg, and
- 21:00Speaker 1: I'm making this selfish. I mean, I will say that
- 21:04Speaker 1: I have been in communication with everybody from Santa Summit,
- 21:07Speaker 1: and I mean everybody, like every single person would love
- 21:13Speaker 1: to go back to that world. I have a story
- 21:16Speaker 1: that I would love to tell. I think everyone that's
- 21:20Speaker 1: heard the story thinks it would be a really cool
- 21:23Speaker 1: story to tell. Will we get to tell that story
- 21:28Speaker 1: is not up to me. But I am really excited
- 21:32Speaker 1: for Fingers Crossednock and Wood. I mean, what a great
- 21:36Speaker 1: year they're all going to be having, too, right. I mean,
- 21:38Speaker 1: I know Ben's in a movie. Hunter's got the Chiefs movie.
- 21:40Speaker 1: My god, Amy's got her a lead movie, which I
- 21:43Speaker 1: definitely strongly recommend everybody go see. If anybody deserves a
- 21:47Speaker 1: leading role in a movie, it's definitely Amy. So yeah,
- 21:53Speaker 1: just go support all those people. They were all so
- 21:55Speaker 1: nice and so great. Jeff is such a great director.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Jennifer Astant was a producer on it. She was in
- 22:00Speaker 1: Haul Out the Holly two. She's great. Yeah, it's a
- 22:03Speaker 1: monster team. It's incredible. You know again, I think I'm
- 22:07Speaker 1: very fortunate that my scripts have also gotten into the
- 22:08Speaker 1: hands of tremendously talented people who share the vision and
- 22:13Speaker 1: are very nice and very collaborative. And you know, I'm
- 22:18Speaker 1: the byproduct of my success is or I am a
- 22:21Speaker 1: byproduct of what do I want to say here? You
- 22:24Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, it's everybody else. It really helps
- 22:28Speaker 1: elevate what I'm bringing to the table in a way
- 22:31Speaker 1: that I feel very fortunate and grateful for.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you've been given a lot of I mean, they've
- 22:37Speaker 2: put a lot of faith in your writing. I mean
- 22:39Speaker 2: even starting like within Mary Measure, which for people who
- 22:42Speaker 2: don't know, the Girl's Gone Hallmark Russell Hayne line origin
- 22:44Speaker 2: story in twenty twenty two when in Mary Measure Drop
- 22:49Speaker 2: that wasn't on our lineup. We were doing like one
- 22:51Speaker 2: movie a week at the time. It just something has
- 22:56Speaker 2: to make the cut. Well, we ran our count down
- 22:58Speaker 2: to Christmas bracket and incomes Russell Champion in his movie
- 23:03Speaker 2: and this was like the little movie that could and
- 23:05Speaker 2: we loved it because we love when the people behind
- 23:09Speaker 2: the movies are like rallying the fans, and the fans
- 23:13Speaker 2: love that too, and we have of course since watched
- 23:16Speaker 2: that movie.
- 23:17Speaker 3: But if you look back to that, I mean.
- 23:18Speaker 2: You got Branda Penny, like, They're like, here's your first movie.
- 23:22Speaker 2: We're gonna give you the hottest guy in glasses we
- 23:24Speaker 2: can on the network.
- 23:25Speaker 3: We're gonna make it so funny.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Addie Mirrin is such a fantastic singer, all right, Great
- 23:31Speaker 1: Garfield is coached so funny. I'm so glad you brought
- 23:35Speaker 1: that up. And of course what did we lose to
- 23:37Speaker 1: three wise men?
- 23:38Speaker 3: I mean, and now.
- 23:40Speaker 1: You know I got to play a very small part
- 23:43Speaker 1: in that. I was just so excited to be a
- 23:47Speaker 1: part of Hallmark at that point. I think I knew
- 23:50Speaker 1: by that point that I was doing Santa Summit in
- 23:53Speaker 1: Mariy Measure. It happened. I got to visit in Marie Measure.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I had to meet all those people. And it's so
- 23:59Speaker 1: addictive you too, Like I can't emphasize enough for me anyway,
- 24:07Speaker 1: that getting to work on movies is as close to
- 24:10Speaker 1: a drug as like you can possibly muster. I could
- 24:14Speaker 1: be doing anything else and I don't want to. I
- 24:17Speaker 1: want to do this. And so then when you go
- 24:19Speaker 1: to the set and you get to see all these people,
- 24:21Speaker 1: meet all these people and watch them in action and go,
- 24:23Speaker 1: those are my words they're saying it. Look at this
- 24:26Speaker 1: set design. Oh there's a poster that they made for
- 24:28Speaker 1: like the thing in like the background that nobody will see,
- 24:32Speaker 1: but I got to see and they worked hard on it.
- 24:35Speaker 1: These are things I'm just so immensely grateful for. So
- 24:38Speaker 1: then that holiday season, while I was working on Santa Summit,
- 24:41Speaker 1: I stumbled upon you All's account and I was like, well,
- 24:45Speaker 1: I got to advocate for the home team, you know,
- 24:50Speaker 1: So yeah, I really enjoyed that. I thought it was
- 24:54Speaker 1: a lot of fun. I don't remember where Santa Summit
- 24:56Speaker 1: finished last year. I think it I think it lost
- 24:59Speaker 1: to like Built Moore. Maybe I've run into some heavy hitters,
- 25:06Speaker 1: some some staunch one seeds, you know, So I don't know.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Maybe this year will be the year, maybe Like Wiser
- 25:12Speaker 1: Men or Santa Class, you know, will go all the way.
- 25:17Speaker 3: I'm going to put in three movies this.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Year, the Deck, you know, and also I know I
- 25:26Speaker 1: focused on Santa Class and Three Wiser Men. But Christmas
- 25:31Speaker 1: under the Lights is my first movie that I've done that.
- 25:35Speaker 1: I I think I would call more a little like
- 25:37Speaker 1: traditional Hallmark. I got the opportunity to come on to
- 25:40Speaker 1: this project and sort of make it my own. Uh
- 25:44Speaker 1: And at first I was like, I'm kind of the
- 25:46Speaker 1: guy who's been doing the funny things. I don't know.
- 25:48Speaker 1: But then I was like, I'm the guy who's been
- 25:51Speaker 1: doing the funny things. Maybe I should do something that's
- 25:54Speaker 1: a little different from me, something that's a little scary.
- 25:57Speaker 1: So I think that one is also really good. I've
- 26:00Speaker 1: seen that one. It's it's a little different. You'll hear
- 26:03Speaker 1: some there's still some comedy in there, but it's a
- 26:06Speaker 1: little more emotional. It's a little more of the old
- 26:09Speaker 1: tug of the old heart strings. I tried to make
- 26:12Speaker 1: it very very personal for myself. I think that paid dividends.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I think that you know, Heather and Marco and Antonio
- 26:20Speaker 1: and Sharon. I mean, like, the cast is great, they're
- 26:23Speaker 1: doing great work. Lucy again dynamite director. So I think
- 26:28Speaker 1: if you're somebody who really likes those more traditional Hallmark movies,
- 26:32Speaker 1: the ones that are going to tug at the heart
- 26:34Speaker 1: strings a little bit, I think this one really works.
- 26:37Speaker 1: I'm excited. I'm excited and a little scared because again,
- 26:40Speaker 1: it's a little different for me. It's something that'll be new.
- 26:43Speaker 1: It's something that'll be new for me anyway, So I'm
- 26:47Speaker 1: excited to see what people think about it.
- 26:50Speaker 2: So we've got like the Santa Sena and three Wiserman,
- 26:53Speaker 2: which are real ensemble casts, and then you know, we
- 26:57Speaker 2: have Under the Holiday Lights.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Why don't Yes, it was at one point it was
- 27:01Speaker 1: called The Lights of Christmas. Now it's Christmas under the Lights.
- 27:04Speaker 1: You know, you never know what the title will end
- 27:07Speaker 1: up being.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the Santa Class changed names too.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Santa Class changed and Mary Measure changed, you know, titles changed.
- 27:15Speaker 1: They at one point there were conversations about changing Hot Frosty,
- 27:19Speaker 1: which thank goodness didn't happen. Yeah, I'm not even gonna
- 27:22Speaker 1: say what the alternated titles were, but I'm I owe
- 27:25Speaker 1: a lot of debt to like Craig Robinson and Joe
- 27:27Speaker 1: Lutrulio for really going to bat for Hot Frosty. And
- 27:31Speaker 1: now I think everybody really loves that title, but there
- 27:36Speaker 1: was a time when that was not necessarily the case.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I think it's Yeah, I'm excited, but yeah, sorry I
- 27:42Speaker 1: totally interrupted your question.
- 27:43Speaker 3: I know, Well that's okay.
- 27:44Speaker 2: So as a writer, do you prefer like I got
- 27:47Speaker 2: two leads and I'm writing for that. I mean, to me,
- 27:49Speaker 2: it seems like you're so good at the ensemble that
- 27:53Speaker 2: And then before I let you answer that question, my
- 27:56Speaker 2: fallo up to that is like, in your mind, you're like, oh,
- 27:59Speaker 2: writing this on some leads us to future opportunities for
- 28:02Speaker 2: additional scripts.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Is that in your mind at all?
- 28:05Speaker 1: You know, that's not in my mind. I think that
- 28:08Speaker 1: when you're writing a movie, you know by the end
- 28:09Speaker 1: of it if there's opportunity for more. But when I
- 28:13Speaker 1: wrote Santa Summit, I pitched it as let's not do
- 28:19Speaker 1: the it's boy meet's girl thing, Let's make it about friends.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Let's do it that way. And then that took a
- 28:25Speaker 1: lot of time and effort to make sure that everybody's
- 28:29Speaker 1: story was being told. You know, you have Jordan's story,
- 28:34Speaker 1: you have a of a story, you of Stella's story,
- 28:37Speaker 1: you have the three of them together, you have Jordan's
- 28:40Speaker 1: story outside of Liam. Right, that's like five different stories
- 28:44Speaker 1: happening at once that all sort of need to be balanced.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I think that that's probably a big reason why I
- 28:49Speaker 1: got the opportunity to work on Wiser Men Santa class
- 28:53Speaker 1: Is is definitely like a little more led by Kim
- 28:58Speaker 1: and Ben, but there is a big ensemble component that
- 29:01Speaker 1: I'm so excited for people to see. Yeah, but writing
- 29:05Speaker 1: the two hander, I kind of like the ensemble more.
- 29:09Speaker 1: It's harder and it's harder to make things happen. It's
- 29:13Speaker 1: harder to get things past upstairs because you want to
- 29:19Speaker 1: write like twenty five characters and they'll go, hey, wait
- 29:22Speaker 1: for doing that's yeah, that's too much. So then you
- 29:26Speaker 1: have to cut out bits. You have to cut out characters.
- 29:28Speaker 1: There's a character I loved in Santa class that I
- 29:31Speaker 1: had to cut entirely. I had to cut a character
- 29:34Speaker 1: that I loved from in Mary Measure. At the time,
- 29:37Speaker 1: I was really, really, really happy that Santa Sana got
- 29:40Speaker 1: to keep Erica's Dasher. I was definitely a little concerned
- 29:43Speaker 1: at one point. My favorite, well, like Act eight, you
- 29:48Speaker 1: have your leading character talking to somebody who we've seen
- 29:52Speaker 1: like once for like five minutes. That's not something that
- 29:56Speaker 1: normally happens in movies like these. That was very influenced
- 30:01Speaker 1: by y'all remember Can't Harley Wade.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Yeah, that's one of my all time favorite movies.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Me too, Yeah, so that was definitely the dasher thing
- 30:10Speaker 1: in Santa Summit was very much like the h the
- 30:12Speaker 1: Jenna Elfman scene at the end of can Harley Wade.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I feel like a little bit where sometimes you just
- 30:19Speaker 1: you need to hear from an outsider to get perspective
- 30:22Speaker 1: on your own thing. But those are hard, those are
- 30:25Speaker 1: hard cells sometimes. But no, I think that the ensembles
- 30:29Speaker 1: are harder mm hmm, and I kind of like them more.
- 30:35Speaker 1: They also like the dialogue goes boom boom boom boom
- 30:37Speaker 1: boom in those which I really love me too.
- 30:40Speaker 2: So we always talk about that way, like we want snappy, snappy,
- 30:44Speaker 2: snappy snappy.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I wrote, I won't say which script is it?
- 30:51Speaker 1: One that's even a maid I wrote, I wrote into
- 30:53Speaker 1: a script recently, these characters should speak as quickly as
- 30:57Speaker 1: humanly possible, right, I just put it in the text.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I was like, please let them do and I'm sure
- 31:04Speaker 1: I was told just remove that from the scripts. They're
- 31:07Speaker 1: gonna They're gonna do how they how they want to
- 31:10Speaker 1: do it. But like Santa Sumo is a great example.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Like Jeff Beasley is so good with comedy, he knows
- 31:15Speaker 1: it's gotta fly. Lucy comes from the world of comedy
- 31:18Speaker 1: shit like Santa Claus is Gonna fly. The wiser Men guys,
- 31:22Speaker 1: I mean, they get it. So I think that when
- 31:24Speaker 1: you do an ensemble thing, you sort of know what
- 31:28Speaker 1: the game is, especially when it's something that's comedy forward. Uh,
- 31:32Speaker 1: and it's got to be boom boom boom. Even in
- 31:35Speaker 1: my opinion, even the scenes that are more emotional, I
- 31:38Speaker 1: don't I don't think that any of those old comedies
- 31:40Speaker 1: from the thirties and forties are less effective emotionally because
- 31:43Speaker 1: they're speaking quickly. Like you know Rick at the end
- 31:45Speaker 1: of Casablanca, he's not drawing that big speech out, he's
- 31:49Speaker 1: firing through it. But you know it's because he's got
- 31:52Speaker 1: to get her on that plane. You know, there's a
- 31:53Speaker 1: reason for him to be talking fast. I think finding
- 31:56Speaker 1: reasons for talking fast can sometimes be hard. I've also
- 32:00Speaker 1: been talking fast this whole interview.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Oh, I speak at an unsustainable pace, So I love it.
- 32:09Speaker 2: I think my brain processes language that quickly, so I
- 32:12Speaker 2: want it to be fit. It's like the Gilmore Girls
- 32:15Speaker 2: style of acting, right, like write ten more pages than
- 32:18Speaker 2: you in theory could fit into this time and make
- 32:21Speaker 2: it work.
- 32:22Speaker 3: And I love it like that is we love that.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Yeah, the draft of Santa Class that I turned in,
- 32:30Speaker 1: at one point, I had somebody send me a text
- 32:33Speaker 1: that said, this is unmakeable because it was just so
- 32:38Speaker 1: long and there were so many bits in it and
- 32:40Speaker 1: so much going on, and so they were like, we're
- 32:43Speaker 1: gonna have to cut things down. And then I did.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I cut like fifteen twenty pages out of it, and
- 32:47Speaker 1: now it's gonna be a really fun, snappy, funny comedy.
- 32:50Speaker 1: But I do think that you run that risk when
- 32:53Speaker 1: doing ensemble stuff of writing too many things. Yeah, then
- 32:58Speaker 1: you have to kill your darlings. I'll have another I'll
- 33:01Speaker 1: have another ensemble thing in twenty twenty five, knock on wood.
- 33:04Speaker 1: As long as everything goes well, I can't say anything
- 33:08Speaker 1: about it, but there should be another ensembly thing in
- 33:13Speaker 1: twenty twenty five. There's some fun stuff coming in twenty
- 33:15Speaker 1: twenty five too. That's why I feel so grateful, man.
- 33:18Speaker 1: I mean, like I could do these all the time.
- 33:21Speaker 1: They're so they're so fun, they're so they're so good
- 33:23Speaker 1: for the soul.
- 33:24Speaker 2: I mean, I love that you already have some of
- 33:26Speaker 2: that lockdown. That makes me really happy for you. If
- 33:29Speaker 2: I could throw it back a little bit.
- 33:30Speaker 3: You went to Duke.
- 33:32Speaker 2: We're in the college application process with one of my kids,
- 33:35Speaker 2: and we visited Duke. I'm like, well, you need to
- 33:36Speaker 2: apply here just because it's so pretty, Like is the
- 33:39Speaker 2: most beautiful college campus I've ever seen? My question actually
- 33:42Speaker 2: is you then went on to.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Be a theater teacher.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Did those experiences like as a theater student and a
- 33:50Speaker 2: theater teacher inform the making of In Mary Measure?
- 33:55Speaker 1: What do you think I mean?
- 33:56Speaker 3: I assume yes, you're like, let's write what I know?
- 33:59Speaker 2: I have no nine million funny stories to tell about
- 34:01Speaker 2: those experience.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I think that I also answer all my questions beginning
- 34:06Speaker 1: with that's so annoying for a listener as a posish,
- 34:08Speaker 1: every single person apologize profusely to everybody who might be
- 34:12Speaker 1: listening to this instead of saying I just took a
- 34:17Speaker 1: big inhale there. In Mary Measure is about teachers. The
- 34:22Speaker 1: Santa Summit is about teachers. The Santa Class, in its
- 34:25Speaker 1: way is about teachers. I think I keep gravitating towards
- 34:31Speaker 1: that because it was so formative, working with kids, working
- 34:36Speaker 1: with young people who really want to express themselves, young
- 34:42Speaker 1: people who have so much to say. And don't know
- 34:45Speaker 1: how to say it yet is really really rewarding. There
- 34:50Speaker 1: are things about teaching that are very not rewarding, which
- 34:54Speaker 1: we won't go into in a Hallmark movie generally speaking,
- 34:58Speaker 1: although I do think it was touched on in Santa
- 35:00Speaker 1: Summat and some of the other things. But the working
- 35:04Speaker 1: with kids and getting to know students and getting to
- 35:07Speaker 1: see their progress is so great. I have multiple students
- 35:13Speaker 1: who work in the industry now doing great things, doing
- 35:17Speaker 1: really cool things. My student, Alish Shannon, she was in
- 35:23Speaker 1: the movie Like Black Christmas. She's on leverage redemption. Now's
- 35:26Speaker 1: she's gonna be at one of these conventions. She was uncharmed,
- 35:29Speaker 1: But how cool is it? Like, you know, Hallmark people
- 35:31Speaker 1: are doing conventions and one of my students is getting
- 35:34Speaker 1: to do a convention, and like, that's insane, that's so cool.
- 35:38Speaker 1: I'm so so thrilled for her. I have no doubt
- 35:41Speaker 1: that there will continue to be teachers in my movies
- 35:43Speaker 1: because it's such a hard thing and it's so important.
- 35:49Speaker 1: That sounds that's like self aggrandizing writer talk to say
- 35:52Speaker 1: it's important, So these like what do I want to
- 35:55Speaker 1: say instead of important?
- 35:56Speaker 3: I don't think you're wrong.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I mean Yeah, I think that it's important for people
- 36:02Speaker 1: to think about what teachers go through and how hard
- 36:07Speaker 1: it is to be a teacher, and to cut teachers
- 36:09Speaker 1: some slack, maybe pay teachers a little better, maybe give
- 36:14Speaker 1: teachers more administrative support. Nobody is a teacher because they
- 36:19Speaker 1: thought it would be easy. They're a teacher because they
- 36:22Speaker 1: love it, even the ones that are bad teachers. We've
- 36:24Speaker 1: all had bad teachers. They got into teaching earnestly because
- 36:28Speaker 1: they love it. Nobody because if you don't love it,
- 36:32Speaker 1: why on earth would you subject yourself to what teachers
- 36:36Speaker 1: get subjected to on a daily basis. So yeah, I
- 36:41Speaker 1: in me measure more than anything else. Was like my
- 36:45Speaker 1: Duke a cappella group days in a lot of ways,
- 36:48Speaker 1: but the teaching part of it was there for sure,
- 36:50Speaker 1: And then Santa Summit was one hundred percent informed by
- 36:54Speaker 1: some of my experiences as a teacher. Absolutely.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Running segment on our podcast is the Justice four segment
- 37:00Speaker 2: where we champion these supporting actors and we're like Justice
- 37:04Speaker 2: for Ericatavl for example, like put the man in a
- 37:06Speaker 2: leading role? Uh can I put you on the spot
- 37:10Speaker 2: and ask you? I mean, like last year we were
- 37:12Speaker 2: like Justice for Amy Greening and now she's getting her moment.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Do you have supporting actors you'd love to see elevated?
- 37:20Speaker 1: Wow? What a question. M there's the um again. I
- 37:25Speaker 1: think that I think that so many of them are
- 37:30Speaker 1: so good. I have to look through my cast. I mean,
- 37:32Speaker 1: like the obvious people. Stephanie Size great again she I
- 37:37Speaker 1: think Eric is a great choice. I brought up you
- 37:41Speaker 1: know Garfield, who is the coach in in Mariy Measure.
- 37:44Speaker 1: I think he's awesome. Although he's doing some really cool
- 37:47Speaker 1: work and like he's on like a vampire show, I
- 37:49Speaker 1: think he's crushing it. I think that I'd love to
- 37:54Speaker 1: see continued opportunities for like both actors that are notably
- 37:59Speaker 1: older and actors or notably younger. I'm trying to think
- 38:03Speaker 1: off the top of my head who I've worked with
- 38:07Speaker 1: this year, who I can reveal that I worked with.
- 38:13Speaker 1: I don't know if I can say anybody from this
- 38:15Speaker 1: year is batch yet, but like, I have a script
- 38:21Speaker 1: that I would love to see happen where the lead
- 38:23Speaker 1: is like seventy. You know, I think that doing something
- 38:28Speaker 1: where you know they're in their early twenties would be
- 38:31Speaker 1: really cool and fun and interesting. I know that you know,
- 38:34Speaker 1: one of one of the goals of a studio system
- 38:36Speaker 1: again is to create new stars. How cool would that
- 38:39Speaker 1: be to sort of, you know, give give some people
- 38:42Speaker 1: a chance right out of the gate at a at
- 38:44Speaker 1: a young age, let them carry I think that would
- 38:47Speaker 1: be really cool. I think that something that runs a
- 38:51Speaker 1: little older would also be really really cool. I keep
- 38:54Speaker 1: going back to in Mary Measure because Garfield Wilson, who
- 38:58Speaker 1: played the coach who is Freddy's dad and was Brendan
- 39:02Speaker 1: Penny's friend, and then Jennifer Robertson from Shit's Creek and
- 39:06Speaker 1: all these amazing things, was the sister. When I went online,
- 39:10Speaker 1: there were a lot of people who were like shipping
- 39:13Speaker 1: the two of them, even though I don't even I
- 39:14Speaker 1: don't even think they shared a scene together, but they
- 39:16Speaker 1: were like, these two should fall in love. I was like,
- 39:22Speaker 1: I'm mad I didn't try to push for that. I'm
- 39:24Speaker 1: mad I didn't try to come up with something like that.
- 39:27Speaker 1: But I think it speaks to something where the fans
- 39:32Speaker 1: don't just want like our pretty leads to fall not
- 39:35Speaker 1: I mean, these are also everybody I named is gorgeous,
- 39:39Speaker 1: so like, I don't mean it like that, but like
- 39:41Speaker 1: I think when characters are in the leading role, we
- 39:44Speaker 1: automatically know, okay, well they're gonna fall in love. We're
- 39:46Speaker 1: rooting for them to fall in love. Giving some of
- 39:50Speaker 1: the characters in normal to play supporting role as a chance,
- 39:53Speaker 1: I think is really really valuable because man, the audiences
- 39:56Speaker 1: also want them to fall in love in these things.
- 39:58Speaker 1: They want everybody to fall in love. I mean, so
- 40:01Speaker 1: we're here for so yeah, but Amy, I'm when I
- 40:06Speaker 1: found out when Amy told me I was over the moon,
- 40:09Speaker 1: I wish I could read my I'm sure that the
- 40:11Speaker 1: text that I sent her had a lot of capital
- 40:15Speaker 1: letters in that. But so I'll put I'll put Stephanie
- 40:18Speaker 1: out there as like my person you already mentioned Eric,
- 40:20Speaker 1: I'll put Stephanie. Stephanie is great, especially because I would
- 40:24Speaker 1: love to do a musical something like way more musical
- 40:28Speaker 1: and man, the pipes on her right. She's in Waitress
- 40:31Speaker 1: right now I think in Winnipeg as like the lead
- 40:35Speaker 1: and that song at the end of Waitress like makes
- 40:38Speaker 1: me cry every time I hear it, And I really
- 40:40Speaker 1: want Stephanie to send me a video first. If you're
- 40:43Speaker 1: listening to this, Stephanie, I haven't forgotten I would.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Love to see her in a leading role, a singing,
- 40:50Speaker 2: leading leading role, something. Yeah.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Yeah, got to get them written, Russell.
- 41:00Speaker 1: With what time. That's the problem I'm running into is
- 41:05Speaker 1: if I do things, if I have the things that
- 41:08Speaker 1: are actively moving forward, then all the ideas that I
- 41:11Speaker 1: have that I love so much, they just get back
- 41:13Speaker 1: burnered and I don't want anybody else to do them.
- 41:15Speaker 1: I want to do them, you know, I have. I
- 41:19Speaker 1: wonder if I can say this, I have I have
- 41:22Speaker 1: a project that hopefully will happen in the near future
- 41:26Speaker 1: somewhere that is very much about the idea of wouldn't
- 41:33Speaker 1: it be great to have more time something that is
- 41:37Speaker 1: very time oriented? Because you know, the older I get,
- 41:43Speaker 1: the more I'm like, I don't have time to watch
- 41:44Speaker 1: the movies I want to watch. I don't have time
- 41:46Speaker 1: to read the books I want to read. So I
- 41:49Speaker 1: have I have something and I don't know where it'll
- 41:52Speaker 1: end up. Maybe I'll tell you off air, but I'll tease, yes, please,
- 41:56Speaker 1: I'll maybe I'll tease off air what this would be.
- 42:01Speaker 1: But I but I think going back to whatever the
- 42:04Speaker 1: question was, what was the.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Question who you wanted? Who were you champion for? Oh?
- 42:11Speaker 1: Oh oh oh? Writing writing projecting. I would love to
- 42:14Speaker 1: just have like a I would love to have Hermione
- 42:16Speaker 1: Granger's Time Turner right right, and just write all these
- 42:20Speaker 1: things without losing a beat.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Wendy doesn't understand that reference, having never read or seen
- 42:25Speaker 2: a Harry Potter movie.
- 42:26Speaker 3: But I'm a Potterhead, so you know I'm.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Not a potterhead. Honestly, I read them all at the time.
- 42:34Speaker 1: I saw the movies because I see I see like
- 42:37Speaker 1: every movie, so I uh here, I was just complaining
- 42:42Speaker 1: about time and I see all the movies. But I
- 42:45Speaker 1: don't want to be like a totally like stereotypical member
- 42:49Speaker 1: of my generation. I don't know what house I would
- 42:53Speaker 1: be in or anything, but I do know I do
- 42:56Speaker 1: know the reference to the time. I do remember the
- 42:58Speaker 1: Time Turner stuff. Which book was that? Was that the
- 43:00Speaker 1: third one?
- 43:01Speaker 3: I think it's the third one.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that was my favorite, by a landslide, both book.
- 43:08Speaker 1: I think to tie that back to Hallmark for Wendy's sake,
- 43:13Speaker 1: I think that a big reason why I like doing
- 43:17Speaker 1: these sorts of comedies on Hallmark is to try to
- 43:22Speaker 1: bring in more people, yes, and to try to do
- 43:26Speaker 1: things that will really appeal to the very passionate and
- 43:30Speaker 1: very loyal and very fantastic Hallmark fans, while also showing
- 43:35Speaker 1: people that some of their preconceived notions about what a
- 43:37Speaker 1: Hallmark movie is don't necessarily exist anymore. And then if
- 43:43Speaker 1: they watch some of my movies, maybe then they watch
- 43:45Speaker 1: some of some Anina's movies, some of you know, Julie
- 43:47Speaker 1: Sherman Wolf's movies. You know, they you know, built more
- 43:51Speaker 1: around and round, you know, the hall at the Hotley's
- 43:54Speaker 1: all these movies. What was the one I really like?
- 43:57Speaker 1: Holly Hotline talking about Eric right, another great one. So
- 44:02Speaker 1: I really think they're hitting their stride with Hallmark right
- 44:05Speaker 1: now in terms of the breadth of what they can do.
- 44:12Speaker 1: And so I'm very grateful to be a part of that.
- 44:15Speaker 1: And I really don't want people looking at it from
- 44:19Speaker 1: afar and going, oh, those are these things. They're these things,
- 44:22Speaker 1: and I'm not a part of that.
- 44:24Speaker 2: You could be, you know what We've been talking about
- 44:27Speaker 2: for a long time too on the podcast. So you know,
- 44:29Speaker 2: I notoriously say I'm a former Hallmark hater because I
- 44:33Speaker 2: don't like the stigma around like what Hallmark movies are.
- 44:38Speaker 2: That's how I came into it. I was like I
- 44:39Speaker 2: don't want to watch that. I don't want to spend
- 44:41Speaker 2: my time watching that. But now as I have gone
- 44:43Speaker 2: into it, like I have my favorite writers, my favorite directors,
- 44:47Speaker 2: like who I want to see, they are pushing, they
- 44:51Speaker 2: are working tours, creating a different kind of landscape of content,
- 44:57Speaker 2: and I'm really excited for it. It's not your Gramma's hallmark.
- 45:02Speaker 1: No, it's it really does work like a studio. I mean,
- 45:08Speaker 1: I read a bunch of movies, read a bunch of
- 45:10Speaker 1: books about you know, old Hollywood, and this is exactly
- 45:15Speaker 1: the sort of thing they would do. You know, you
- 45:17Speaker 1: sling the bat a bunch, You create a bunch of movies,
- 45:20Speaker 1: You give people opportunities. We see what fans like. You
- 45:23Speaker 1: give those people more opportunities, you tell more of those stories.
- 45:26Speaker 1: And you know, if you're doing stuff like the big
- 45:29Speaker 1: studios that are all run by sort of private equity
- 45:31Speaker 1: firms at this point, but they're making like eight movies
- 45:34Speaker 1: a year or something, how can you learn what your
- 45:36Speaker 1: audience is going to really respond to with such a
- 45:39Speaker 1: small sample. You do need more I hate the word content, right,
- 45:43Speaker 1: but like you need more movies in order to know
- 45:46Speaker 1: what's working and what's not I do think that's something
- 45:50Speaker 1: that Hallmark and Netflix share is you know, having a
- 45:55Speaker 1: lot of material that then they can use to track
- 45:58Speaker 1: what they're interested in continuing to do going forward. So yeah,
- 46:04Speaker 1: I think that. I think that if somebody watched something
- 46:09Speaker 1: like Three Wise Men the first one, like who wouldn't
- 46:15Speaker 1: think that this is funny and cute and charming, Like
- 46:20Speaker 1: people I know who watched Santa Summit Who. When I
- 46:23Speaker 1: went on letterboxed, there were so many reviews that were like,
- 46:28Speaker 1: I watched these with my girlfriend or whatever, and I
- 46:30Speaker 1: normally hate them, but this one was good. You know,
- 46:34Speaker 1: there are more like that. You might have to sort
- 46:37Speaker 1: through some that are more old school that you might
- 46:40Speaker 1: not like right, You might have to target, you might
- 46:41Speaker 1: have to read what the movies are about, you might
- 46:44Speaker 1: get to know some of the people who make them.
- 46:46Speaker 1: But like I think there's a lot of room to
- 46:49Speaker 1: explore there. And again, I'm grateful that Hallmark seems to
- 46:54Speaker 1: be interested in continuing to explore some of these things
- 46:59Speaker 1: because of your really cool The first movie that I
- 47:01Speaker 1: saw Wendy, when I I was given an opportunity by
- 47:05Speaker 1: a producer by the name of Jack Grossbart who had
- 47:08Speaker 1: read some of like the thrillers that I had written,
- 47:12Speaker 1: and he was like, I can't make these, you know,
- 47:14Speaker 1: they're gory. I do Hallmark. That's very different. He's like,
- 47:18Speaker 1: but if you ever try to write a Hallmark Christmas movie,
- 47:20Speaker 1: you'll let me know, you know, we'll talk about it.
- 47:23Speaker 1: I tried one and it wasn't It wasn't a Hallmark movie.
- 47:27Speaker 1: I still think it would be a good movie somewhere,
- 47:29Speaker 1: but it was not a Hallmark movie. I learned a
- 47:32Speaker 1: lot more about what that sandbox looked like. And then
- 47:34Speaker 1: the second movie that I wrote for him was in
- 47:36Speaker 1: Mary Measure, and I got made right. But in order
- 47:39Speaker 1: to do that, I did have to watch a few
- 47:42Speaker 1: Hallmark movies, you know. And the first thing that I
- 47:45Speaker 1: ever watched was Winter and Veil with Lacey and Tyler.
- 47:50Speaker 1: So I thinks a really good one.
- 47:52Speaker 2: No more Strudel, Yeah, that's we talk about that movie.
- 47:57Speaker 3: We referenced that movie a lot, because they talk about
- 47:59Speaker 3: Strudell in that movie a lot. And I was like,
- 48:01Speaker 3: if they say Strudle one more time, good word.
- 48:04Speaker 1: It's a good word for actors to get to say.
- 48:06Speaker 1: But like, you know, and now I feel very fortunate
- 48:08Speaker 1: that I've got a movie with Lazy, I've got a
- 48:10Speaker 1: movie with Tyler I, you know, get to I've gotten
- 48:14Speaker 1: to know both of them a little bit more. Hopefully
- 48:16Speaker 1: I will continue to get to know them both more.
- 48:20Speaker 1: They're both so nice and cool. Like everybody, this is
- 48:26Speaker 1: such a cliche that nobody ever wants to hear I
- 48:28Speaker 1: don't think, but maybe Hallmark fans do want to hear this.
- 48:32Speaker 1: I've not met a jerk man, I haven't. I have not.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Everybody that I've had the opportunity to work with has
- 48:40Speaker 1: been so generous and so nice and so cool. I
- 48:44Speaker 1: think when you make movies like these that are on
- 48:47Speaker 1: a budget and that are very time crunched, there's there's
- 48:51Speaker 1: no room for jerks. There's no time for jerks. There's
- 48:54Speaker 1: not enough money to waste time because somebody wants to
- 48:57Speaker 1: be a jerk about something like otherwise the movie might
- 49:00Speaker 1: not get made right. So it also helps that everybody's Canadian,
- 49:03Speaker 1: and Canadians are super nice. So I don't know everybody
- 49:08Speaker 1: that I've gotten a chance to work with. You know,
- 49:10Speaker 1: you wonder, like, oh, are they gonna like think that
- 49:13Speaker 1: they're like big, like to too big in their too
- 49:17Speaker 1: big for their breeches that's the phrase I'm looking for.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Or do they think, oh the writer, pooh pooh, you
- 49:23Speaker 1: know whatever. I just haven't encountered that from at least
- 49:28Speaker 1: from the talent from the stars that that you know
- 49:32Speaker 1: your listeners are in love with, right, They're all super
- 49:36Speaker 1: cool and super nice so so far anyway, there's no
- 49:40Speaker 1: river so long, but contain a bend. Maybe one of
- 49:43Speaker 1: them becomes jerkorn bag, But so far I've found them
- 49:46Speaker 1: all to be awesome to a person.
- 49:50Speaker 3: I love.
- 49:51Speaker 2: I love that feedback. So you're pretty active on social media.
- 49:55Speaker 2: You're still on Twitter, slash x. What's the best place
- 49:59Speaker 2: for our list to keep up with you?
- 50:02Speaker 1: Yeah? So I am Russell h film. That's two s's,
- 50:05Speaker 1: two l's, which I feel like I have to say,
- 50:08Speaker 1: but do people know a Russell with one L?
- 50:10Speaker 2: Every time I write your name, I accidentally write one L.
- 50:13Speaker 2: I don't know what it is, so I think it's.
- 50:15Speaker 1: Worth there's there's an impulse that people have just fell
- 50:21Speaker 1: with one L. But every Russell that's in pop culture
- 50:24Speaker 1: is two l's. I don't know what I'm seeing. Right,
- 50:27Speaker 1: There's like Russell Crowe that's two l's. Russell Westbrook in
- 50:30Speaker 1: the NBA. Two L's Russell Peters, the comedian. There's a
- 50:36Speaker 1: bunch of Russell's out there. They're all two L's. I
- 50:38Speaker 1: don't know a single one L Russell anyway, that's a
- 50:41Speaker 1: sidebar two s's, two l's Russell h film. I'm that
- 50:46Speaker 1: on Instagram where I'm pretty active when I'm not trying
- 50:50Speaker 1: to steer everybody towards voting for my movies on the
- 50:56Speaker 1: on Megan and Wendy's polls.
- 50:57Speaker 3: Hey, we love it, steer them. Yeah.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Erica Tudley took up the mantle last year as well
- 51:04Speaker 2: with because he had Santa Summit and a holiday hotline.
- 51:08Speaker 3: So it was a good time.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, he was helping out. It's good, it's
- 51:14Speaker 1: it's but you're never gonna beat I feel like there's
- 51:17Speaker 1: always a movie or two that it doesn't matter how
- 51:20Speaker 1: much you campaign people.
- 51:21Speaker 2: We've talked about taking them out of the running. We're like,
- 51:23Speaker 2: what if we took Biltmore out of the running last year?
- 51:26Speaker 2: This year it's hard because like, what are you gonna
- 51:27Speaker 2: take out? Are you gonna take out Holiday Touchdown? Are
- 51:29Speaker 2: you going to take out three Wiser Men? Are you
- 51:31Speaker 2: going to take out the Holiday Quest?
- 51:33Speaker 1: Right?
- 51:33Speaker 3: So, this year, it might be a fairer fight.
- 51:37Speaker 2: In my mind, there's not a single front runner, not yet,
- 51:43Speaker 2: that's true.
- 51:43Speaker 3: I haven't actually seen a single minute of it.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm so interested to see how people respond to
- 51:52Speaker 1: Santa Class. I know it's just because I was just
- 51:54Speaker 1: working on it. It's so funny, it's so out there.
- 52:00Speaker 1: It's there are so many surprises that'll probably just get
- 52:04Speaker 1: like spoiled in a preview at some point. But like, man,
- 52:09Speaker 1: I think it's and you know, I think that speaking
- 52:12Speaker 1: of social media, something that I've learned from like Kim
- 52:15Speaker 1: and Ben among other people, and obviously Tyler is very
- 52:18Speaker 1: good at this too, is the promotion game is real, man,
- 52:22Speaker 1: Like it's really important to get your movies out there
- 52:26Speaker 1: and to get awareness out there. And Kim is so
- 52:32Speaker 1: forward thinking and I think she maybe I read something
- 52:35Speaker 1: once where she credited Tyler for this. I don't know
- 52:37Speaker 1: if that's actually true. Kim is very smart in her
- 52:39Speaker 1: own right, but like both of them are so good
- 52:42Speaker 1: about like shooting little promos while they're working or thinking
- 52:46Speaker 1: of what they're going to do to like get the
- 52:49Speaker 1: word out. And so I feel so so grateful that
- 52:52Speaker 1: people like Kim and Ben and Tyler and whatever in
- 52:55Speaker 1: the movies that I've worked on, because they're they're fighting
- 52:59Speaker 1: the good fight for me. But I'm trying to join
- 53:01Speaker 1: in that as much as I can. On Russell hGe
- 53:03Speaker 1: Film on Instagram and Russell h Film Twitter. I think
- 53:08Speaker 1: those are the main places.
- 53:10Speaker 2: We had Kim on our podcast a few weeks ago
- 53:12Speaker 2: and she was saying like she has to have Tyler
- 53:14Speaker 2: hold her hand to that sort of thing.
- 53:15Speaker 3: She's like, she's like, I'm not a techie person.
- 53:17Speaker 2: I had to have him on the phone as I'm
- 53:20Speaker 2: like creating this content, which is so funny to me.
- 53:23Speaker 2: I'm like, you're an actor, you're a writer.
- 53:26Speaker 1: And you're I think she's being modest. I think that
- 53:29Speaker 1: she's so dow well.
- 53:31Speaker 3: I was I don't know.
- 53:32Speaker 2: If you saw, but she made this reel for the
- 53:34Speaker 2: Real West and I was like, that was so beautifully produced.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Do you have any interest in being a director? And
- 53:38Speaker 2: She's like, I had no idea what I was doing.
- 53:40Speaker 2: And I was like, I think you know more than
- 53:43Speaker 2: you're saying.
- 53:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:44Speaker 1: I think that she knows what looks cool, and she
- 53:46Speaker 1: also has really good ideas. There's there's a promo idea
