- 0:11Hello friends, it's Shawn here. It's a Tuesday, it's the 8th of
- 0:15October and I'm glad to have your company as you have tapped
- 0:19on play and here I am and you and me, you and me friend, we
- 0:23are going to read another chapter of God's word continuing
- 0:26in the story. And if you remember yesterday's
- 0:29chapter, oh, it was a long one. Lots of tricky names as Ezra
- 0:34returned back with this group of 5000 or so people to the
- 0:39promised land. Oh, you'd think this would be
- 0:42great. They arrived at the temple,
- 0:44started to worship God, offered some sacrifices, all is well,
- 0:49they're back, life is good, they are God's restored people.
- 0:53But no, it doesn't last like that for very long.
- 0:57Four months have now passed. They have been back for a few
- 0:59months and unfortunately now another problem has reared its
- 1:04ugly head. And Ezra.
- 1:05Ezra is not one to sit around and do nothing.
- 1:08There will be decisive action as he tries to work out how do we
- 1:12respond to the challenges of God's people who continue to be
- 1:17classic Israel and continue to choose to do the wrong thing.
- 1:22So why don't you join me, friend, as you and I read
- 1:24together to see what happens in this story as recorded in Ezra
- 1:29Chapter 9. When these things had been done,
- 1:42the Jewish leaders came to me and said many of the people of
- 1:46Israel and even some of the priests and Levites have not
- 1:49kept themselves separate from the other peoples living in the
- 1:52land. They've taken up the detestable
- 1:55practises of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites,
- 2:00Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians and Amorites, for the men of
- 2:05Israel have married women from these people and have taken them
- 2:08as wives for their sons. So the holy race has become
- 2:12polluted by these mixed marriages.
- 2:15Worse yet, the leaders and officials have led the way in
- 2:19this outrage. When I heard this, I tore my
- 2:23cloak and my shirt, pulled hair from my head and beard, and sat
- 2:28down utterly shocked. Then all who trembled at the
- 2:32words of the God of Israel came and sat with me because of this
- 2:36outrage committed by the returned exiles.
- 2:40And I sat there utterly appalled until the time of the evening
- 2:44sacrifice. At the time of the sacrifice, I
- 2:48stood up from where I had sat in the morning with my clothes
- 2:51torn. I fell to my knees and lifted my
- 2:55hands to the Lord. My God.
- 2:58I prayed. Oh my God, I am utterly ashamed.
- 3:03I blush to lift up my face to you.
- 3:06For our sins are piled higher than our heads, and our guilt
- 3:10has reached to the heavens. From the days of our ancestors
- 3:14until now, we have been steeped in sin.
- 3:18That is why we and our kings and our priests have been at the
- 3:21mercy of the Pagan kings of the land.
- 3:24We have been killed, captured, robbed, and disgraced, just as
- 3:29we are today. But now we have been given a
- 3:32brief moment of grace for the Lord.
- 3:35Our God has allowed a few of us to survive as a remnant.
- 3:39He has given us security in this holy place.
- 3:44Our God has brightened our eyes and granted us some relief from
- 3:47our slavery, for we were slaves. But in His unfailing love, our
- 3:53God did not abandon us in our slavery.
- 3:56Instead, he caused the kings of Persia to treat us favourably.
- 4:02He revived us so we could rebuild the temple of our God
- 4:06and repair its ruins. He has given us a protective
- 4:10wall in Judah and Jerusalem. And now, O our God, what can we
- 4:16say after all this? For once again we have abandoned
- 4:19your commands, your servants. The prophets warned us when they
- 4:23said the land you are entering to possess is totally defiled by
- 4:28the detestable practises of the people living there.
- 4:31From one end to the other, the land is filled with corruption.
- 4:36Don't let your daughters marry their sons.
- 4:39Don't take their daughters as wives for your sons.
- 4:42Don't ever promote the peace and prosperity of those nations.
- 4:47If you follow these instructions, you will be strong
- 4:50and will enjoy the good things the land produces, and you will
- 4:54leave this prosperity to your children forever.
- 4:58Now we are being punished because of our wickedness and
- 5:01our great guilt, but we have actually been punished far less
- 5:05than we deserve. For you, our God have allowed
- 5:09some of us to survive as a remnant, but Even so, we are
- 5:15again breaking your commands and intermarrying with people who do
- 5:19these detestable things. Won't your anger be enough to
- 5:24destroy us so that even this little remnant no longer
- 5:28survives? O Lord God of Israel, you are
- 5:32just. We come before you in our guilt
- 5:36as nothing but an escaped remnant, though in such a
- 5:40condition, none of us can stand in your presence.
- 5:53Lord, thank you for your patient heart.
- 5:57Thank You. That doesn't matter how stubborn
- 5:59we are, and we continually wrong you.
- 6:04You continue to love us. You continue to reach out to us.
- 6:07You continue to restore us. And through Jesus, You have made
- 6:12a way that not just 7, not just 7 * 7 or 7 * 77, but infinite
- 6:20times, You just forgive us and bless us with Your love and Your
- 6:26presence. My Lord, we do not deserve it,
- 6:30but You offer it to us anyway. Thank You for Your kind,
- 6:35generous and forgiving heart. Please soften our hearts, not
- 6:40only so that we can live more closely aligned to the plans
- 6:44that You have for us, that we can also be people of
- 6:49forgiveness, people of soft hearts, people of kindness and
- 6:54grace, rather than scorekeepers and judges.
- 6:59Our Lord, we love you and we appreciate the generosity with
- 7:03which you treat us. But most of all we are so
- 7:08grateful for Jesus who showed us this way as through his life we
- 7:14saw your nature, your true nature of love and forgiveness.
- 7:21So we praise you and we thank you and we pray all of this
- 7:25through Jesus name, Amen.
