- 0:45Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us on a Tuesday. This portion of
- 0:48Speaker 1: the program brought to you by Central Texas Sports Medicine.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Why at Hippel's coming up the new defensive coordinator. We
- 0:59Speaker 1: have got a high high school report. We're going to
- 1:01Speaker 1: hear from Kelvin Sampson. The Houston Cougars, despite what he says,
- 1:06Speaker 1: are going home to play in the sweet sixteen. In
- 1:12Speaker 1: the second hour, Mallory is going to join us. We're
- 1:15Speaker 1: going to hear from Ruben Owens and Damian Samford. In
- 1:19Speaker 1: other words, this is like an all spring football show today.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And as you've heard me say many times and you
- 1:28Speaker 1: follow me over the years, there is nothing better than
- 1:32Speaker 1: spring football unless it's college baseball. Where the Aggies are
- 1:37Speaker 1: at home tonight hosting Houston Christian.
- 1:41Speaker 3: That's a six o'clock start.
- 1:43Speaker 1: We will have the broadcast at five forty five for
- 1:46Speaker 1: you here on the zone.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Make a note this weekend we have.
- 1:54Speaker 1: In caa basketball Aggie Baseball will be on sixteen.
- 2:01Speaker 3: WT a W.
- 2:07Speaker 1: So the Aggie is sitting at eighteen and five, the
- 2:11Speaker 1: Husky's sitting at eleven and twelve. This will be the
- 2:16Speaker 1: sixteenth time they have hosted Houston Christian formerly Houston Baptist.
- 2:22Speaker 1: They are fifteen and oh against the Huskies. So we
- 2:28Speaker 1: got that going on for us, which is nice. Major
- 2:35Speaker 1: League Baseball begins tomorrow night in San Francisco, so it'll
- 2:41Speaker 1: be afternoon for a six o'clock start.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Four o'clock their time.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Giants hosting the Yankees and then Thursday afternoon the Angels
- 2:56Speaker 1: at Houston. Scott Clindena will be on hand for that opener.
- 3:01Speaker 1: The Rangers are opening on the road against the Phillies.
- 3:06Speaker 1: This is the third straight year they've opened the season
- 3:10Speaker 1: against the Phillies.
- 3:12Speaker 3: And by the.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Way, boy, that that rivalry has just taken.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Off, I'm kidding.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Carter Bummler was on the mound pitching when Skip Shoemaker
- 3:31Speaker 1: made a visit his last spring game. Came out of
- 3:36Speaker 1: the dug out of for Bumbler had retired the first
- 3:39Speaker 1: two Royals in the fifth inning last night, catcher Danny
- 3:44Speaker 1: Jansen all four infielders on the mound when Shoemaker came
- 3:50Speaker 1: out and said, hey, you're on the opening day roster.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Bombler telling the Rangers Sports Network, I wasn't expected it.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I was like, why is he coming out here? He
- 4:03Speaker 1: got to the mound, told me I made the team.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I mean, honestly, I thought it was getting taken out
- 4:07Speaker 1: of the game when the maid When the manager comes out,
- 4:11Speaker 1: you're usually done. What a cool moment. You can find
- 4:14Speaker 1: video of that some places.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Uh.
- 4:19Speaker 1: We were talking about the basketball tournament and Iowa and
- 4:25Speaker 1: Nebraska play in Houston at the Tyota Center at six
- 4:32Speaker 1: thirty Thursday night. The Cougars play the Lake game schedule
- 4:39Speaker 1: for nine o'clock, probably be later than that. They're taking
- 4:42Speaker 1: on Illinois, and there could be job openings at Kansas,
- 4:48Speaker 1: North Carolina and Florida. We talked about this yesterday on
- 4:52Speaker 1: the Writers Roundtable. So Athletic Director Scott Strickland at Florida said,
- 4:58Speaker 1: We're going to do everything in our power to make
- 5:01Speaker 1: sure he always knows he's really valuable. Golden received back
- 5:08Speaker 1: to back raises, signed a two year contract extension and
- 5:13Speaker 1: twenty four at four point one million added another year
- 5:18Speaker 1: after he won the Natty last May. At six and
- 5:21Speaker 1: three quarters million, he's among seven coaches who have won
- 5:25Speaker 1: national championships. He is fifth in compensation Bill self, John Calipari,
- 5:32Speaker 1: Dan Hurley, Tom Izzo. He may jump some of those
- 5:38Speaker 1: guys if he signs another extension and apparently he's going
- 5:43Speaker 1: to get another raise. Syracuse is bringing back one of
- 5:48Speaker 1: its own. Jerry McNamara from Sienna has been hired to
- 5:53Speaker 1: be the Oranges next coach, succeeding Adrian Autry. McNamara winning
- 6:02Speaker 1: out for the job comes weeks comes after weeks of
- 6:05Speaker 1: debate among big money players at Syracuse, who said there
- 6:11Speaker 1: was a faction of boosters that were adamant about hiring
- 6:15Speaker 1: outside the Jim Beheim Tree. The problem is a lot
- 6:21Speaker 1: of coaches apparently are a little reluctant because of either
- 6:28Speaker 1: that faction or the fact they don't know that Syracuse
- 6:32Speaker 1: has a lot of money.
- 6:33Speaker 3: To pay players in the future.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Speaking of getting paid, Darius Acuff, the Arkansas freshman who
- 6:41Speaker 1: has become a star, has landed a signature shoe deal
- 6:46Speaker 1: with Reebok to become the first NCAA men's athlete to
- 6:52Speaker 1: receive a major deal with a US brand.
- 6:56Speaker 3: While he was still in school.
- 7:00Speaker 1: A Cuff is ranked number eight on the ESPN board.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think he's going to go higher than that. The
- 7:07Speaker 1: SEC player of the Year, he has sixty points in
- 7:12Speaker 1: the tournament so far. That's the most by an SEC
- 7:18Speaker 1: player in his first career two tournament games. The second
- 7:24Speaker 1: player in the past fifty years to average thirty points
- 7:29Speaker 1: and five assist a game.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Billy Donovan did it.
- 7:37Speaker 1: First round of the Masters sixteen days away. Tiger Woods
- 7:43Speaker 1: hadn't said he's playing, but he is going to play
- 7:47Speaker 1: in the final of the TGL Championship on ESPN. Woods
- 7:58Speaker 1: had disc replacements surgery in October has not competed in
- 8:03Speaker 1: any of the matches. He has been there as captain
- 8:08Speaker 1: of the Jupiter team, which made it to the finals
- 8:11Speaker 1: but lost the first of a two out of three
- 8:14Speaker 1: series last night. He will replace Kevin Kisner on the
- 8:19Speaker 1: team along with Tom Kim Max Homa. He is playing
- 8:25Speaker 1: against a team that has Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood.
- 8:28Speaker 3: It say the Gala.
- 8:30Speaker 1: The lineup change was announced last night. The Jupiter team
- 8:35Speaker 1: has to win if you care about any of that.
- 8:37Speaker 1: But Tiger hitting ten or eleven shots on flat ground
- 8:41Speaker 1: in a sterile environment is not the same as walking
- 8:46Speaker 1: thirty six holes up and down the hills of Augusta.
- 8:50Speaker 1: So he may or may not play. I'd honestly be surprised.
- 8:56Speaker 1: This may be at just a small test for him.
- 8:59Speaker 1: He's said he's been hitting golf balls on some days,
- 9:03Speaker 1: but some days he can't even do that. The Texas
- 9:09Speaker 1: Children's Houston Open is being played this week. I don't
- 9:13Speaker 1: know if you knew that or not, but no, I'm
- 9:19Speaker 1: wrong about that. It's being played next week, the week
- 9:23Speaker 1: before the Masters. Today, Scotti Scheffler Withdrew to be replaced
- 9:29Speaker 1: by Matt Coocher. The Golf Channel says that Scheffler and
- 9:33Speaker 1: his wife are expecting their second child.
- 9:40Speaker 3: The withdrawal means that he probably won't play in the Masters.
- 9:47Speaker 1: The Texas Open follows the Houston Open, or the Texas
- 9:52Speaker 1: Open is this week? Okay, No, the Valero Open and
- 9:57Speaker 1: then the Texas Open right before the Masters.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Sorry about that.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Anyway, Scotty ain't playing their first job. Bennett was born
- 10:08Speaker 1: almost two years of the day on May eight, twenty
- 10:12Speaker 1: twenty four, so they need to plan a little better
- 10:17Speaker 1: with this baby being do around the Masters time.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Anyway, Scotty ain't playing in Houston. I know the Houston.
- 10:25Speaker 1: People can't be happy about that, but hey, there's nothing
- 10:27Speaker 1: they can do about that. Okay, that's probably enough to
- 10:32Speaker 1: catch us up for now. We're going to come back.
- 10:37Speaker 1: We're going to talk a little football, believe it or not.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Spring football. I am mister spring football, and that's just
- 10:47Speaker 1: the way it's going to be. I realize that there
- 10:50Speaker 1: are a few of you that say, hey, you can't
- 10:54Speaker 1: tell anything about well, how the team's going to be
- 11:02Speaker 1: because of you know, spring football.
- 11:05Speaker 3: There's nothing in the spring.
- 11:08Speaker 1: That you can see that that might, you know, give
- 11:14Speaker 1: you an insight into what's happening.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Oh, I disagree.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I believe that you can tell everything that's happening, and
- 11:26Speaker 1: you people better pay close attention. And I am doing
- 11:30Speaker 1: my best for you to be able to do that
- 11:33Speaker 1: right now. Okay, Now, the great gay Back used to
- 11:40Speaker 1: go and when the meetia was allowed the first ten
- 11:45Speaker 1: minutes of warm ups and chart how many completions the
- 11:51Speaker 1: quarterback had during the early part of the spring practice.
- 12:01Speaker 1: And he's he was much better and more in tune
- 12:07Speaker 1: to that kind of stuff. So I can't do that
- 12:12Speaker 1: for you, but I can. I can do my best,
- 12:19Speaker 1: and that's all any of us can do. So we're
- 12:23Speaker 1: gonna hear from Lal Himpel, the defensive coordinator coming up,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and we've got a high school report.
- 12:32Speaker 3: We're gonna hear.
- 12:32Speaker 1: From Kelvin Sampson of the Houston Cougars. We're gonna hear
- 12:36Speaker 1: from a couple of Aggie players, Ruben Owens and Damian Sanford.
- 12:42Speaker 3: And Mallory is here. We've got a full show coming.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Stay with us.
- 12:47Speaker 1: This portion of the program is brought to you by
- 12:50Speaker 1: and Co Insurance.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Enco Insurance is now a part of Hoop International, bringing
- 12:56Speaker 5: you more choices, better value, and even greater expertise. Game
- 13:00Speaker 5: has changed. We're still the same local team you know
- 13:02Speaker 5: and trust now with even more to offer from business
- 13:05Speaker 5: insurance to personal protection and employee benefits. We're still committed
- 13:08Speaker 5: to protecting what matters most with the personalized service you

- 13:15Speaker 5: more resources, more solutions, Still your team and co insurance
- 13:19Speaker 5: a Hub International company, so you're ready for tomorrow.
- 13:22Speaker 6: Having Candy and Michelle are Unsportsman Life.
- 13:25Speaker 7: The Las Vegas Raiders need to hold an auction for
- 13:28Speaker 7: the number one overall pick. If you've got a quarterback prospect,
- 13:31Speaker 7: whether it's Mendoz or a Todd Simpson number one on
- 13:33Speaker 7: your board, it's debatable or whether or not you can
- 13:36Speaker 7: mess this kit up, and you should probably consider trading
- 13:39Speaker 7: down if there's a team that's willing to give you
- 13:41Speaker 7: a king's ransom to move up to number one to
- 13:43Speaker 7: take either one of.
- 13:44Speaker 8: The Unsportsmen Life. Listen in weekday mornings from fining to
- 13:48Speaker 8: eight on the Zone eleven fifty AM and ninety three
- 13:50Speaker 8: point seven FM.
- 13:59Speaker 9: Good Bye, He Got Me, Mile, He Got Goo, pulled
- 14:07Speaker 9: the p rule down the.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Bay, the great Hank Williams who died much, much too early.
- 14:17Speaker 1: He basically drank himself to death unfortunately.
- 14:23Speaker 10: Jumb Line Phili Gumbo.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I'm going all right, Loal hemp Hill was with coach
- 14:33Speaker 1: Elko at Hofstra back in two thousand and six, seven eight,
- 14:41Speaker 1: when there were coaches together. They reunited at Duke. Elko
- 14:47Speaker 1: made him co defensive coordinator when he was there. He
- 14:50Speaker 1: went to James Madison as defensive coordinator. He ended up
- 14:55Speaker 1: back here coaching last year and now he is a
- 14:58Speaker 1: defensive coordinator under coach elco uh and last late last week,
- 15:06Speaker 1: visited with members of the media.
- 15:10Speaker 11: Well, what did it mean for you to be named
- 15:12Speaker 11: defensive coordinator? And what do you think you'll bring to
- 15:15Speaker 11: the position.
- 15:17Speaker 6: It's it's a good honor. It's a really good honor.
- 15:19Speaker 12: You know, growing up, this was in my mind, you know,
- 15:22Speaker 12: my in the eighties and nineties, this was the defense.
- 15:25Speaker 6: So that's the vision I had.
- 15:27Speaker 12: And obviously you take a you know, you you don't
- 15:29Speaker 12: watch as much believe or not, as you don't watch
- 15:31Speaker 12: as much.
- 15:31Speaker 6: College football as a college football coach, so.
- 15:33Speaker 12: You kind of take a break and then come back
- 15:37Speaker 12: you actually get down here and you see what's really
- 15:40Speaker 12: all about what people talk about. It's it's really amazing
- 15:43Speaker 12: experience in terms of what I can bring, really a
- 15:51Speaker 12: little bit trying to bring a little bit more enthusiasm
- 15:53Speaker 12: to the defense, hopefully bring you know, fundamental change. That's
- 15:58Speaker 12: really what I'm trying to do, you know, Increase the fundamentals,
- 16:02Speaker 12: get better at the fundamentals.
- 16:04Speaker 6: Things of that nature.
- 16:06Speaker 12: Schematically, you know, a little bit different philosophy wise than
- 16:10Speaker 12: Mike defensively, so kind of get bring a ying to
- 16:14Speaker 12: his yang and how we stop people and how we
- 16:17Speaker 12: try to attack people. But overall, you know, the good
- 16:23Speaker 12: thing is, you know we really have the same type
- 16:26Speaker 12: of overall philosophy when you look at defense. So that
- 16:29Speaker 12: allows it, you know, to really work pretty well.
- 16:33Speaker 11: What do you think fans can anticipate pen Pill coach
- 16:36Speaker 11: defense to look like fast?
- 16:39Speaker 12: You know, the number one thing we're talking about is
- 16:41Speaker 12: how hard we play. I know that's you know, everyone
- 16:45Speaker 12: gets up here and says that, I don't know if
- 16:48Speaker 12: anyone's going to coach it harder than I will. You know,
- 16:51Speaker 12: we're going to be attacked. Mentality, whether we're blitzer or
- 16:53Speaker 12: not blitzing. The mentality is always going to be attacked
- 16:56Speaker 12: the opponent, attack the offenses, and you know.
- 17:00Speaker 6: We're going to play together. You know, that's kind of
- 17:03Speaker 6: our core mantra.
- 17:05Speaker 12: And when we talk about together, it's you know, communicating together,
- 17:08Speaker 12: having fun together, playing as a unit, you know, creating
- 17:12Speaker 12: our own twelfth man per se in a different ways.
- 17:17Speaker 9: Got the left side, Alex Miller from the Eagle, and
- 17:20Speaker 9: then Tony and Matthew.
- 17:21Speaker 6: Great to meet you, Good to meet you.
- 17:23Speaker 13: You mentioned kind of how you and Mike are a
- 17:25Speaker 13: little yin and yang. Can you just maybe elaborate on
- 17:27Speaker 13: that a little more and just kind of how you
- 17:29Speaker 13: see that shakeout?
- 17:30Speaker 12: Yeah, he I think the one thing to understand is
- 17:33Speaker 12: I think we both look at things big picture defensively
- 17:39Speaker 12: the same way. You know, we kind of look at
- 17:41Speaker 12: things outside in, which is a little bit different. You know,
- 17:43Speaker 12: a lot of defensive football coaches look at things from
- 17:46Speaker 12: you know, the front back, and then there's a lot
- 17:49Speaker 12: of football coaches that look at it from the back
- 17:52Speaker 12: to the front. We kind of look at it outside in,
- 17:55Speaker 12: which is a little bit different. You know, how do
- 17:57Speaker 12: you match up on the perimeter. That's you know kind
- 18:00Speaker 12: of the ways we look at things, which is similar
- 18:03Speaker 12: in terms of, you know, how we're different.
- 18:08Speaker 6: It's it's a little bit philosophy wise.
- 18:10Speaker 12: In coverage, He's he's a very much used to be
- 18:15Speaker 12: It's changing a little bit here and there, but a
- 18:18Speaker 12: very matchy quarters guy. You know a lot of man
- 18:21Speaker 12: the man defense. I have not been that much man
- 18:25Speaker 12: the man defense. I've been a little bit more zoned.
- 18:27Speaker 12: I haven't had the guys to do that. I've kind
- 18:29Speaker 12: of played to what we had and that's where we're
- 18:32Speaker 12: a little bit different.
- 18:33Speaker 6: It's just how we defend the past a little bit.
- 18:37Speaker 12: But again, I think all conversations are welcomed in that room,
- 18:40Speaker 12: and we have some good ones.
- 18:43Speaker 13: Just wanted to ask if you could just share about
- 18:45Speaker 13: your relationship with him over the years and just how
- 18:47Speaker 13: that's evolved and why coming here when you did.
- 18:50Speaker 6: Was the right move for you.
- 18:51Speaker 7: Yeah, he was.
- 18:54Speaker 12: I actually took a DV job and he was a
- 18:56Speaker 12: defensive coordinator. We didn't know each other, and we got
- 18:59Speaker 12: along and worked really well together.
- 19:01Speaker 6: We put together a pretty good defense.
- 19:02Speaker 12: This is to This is over twenty years ago at Hofstra,
- 19:08Speaker 12: and then through the years he went his direction, I
- 19:11Speaker 12: went my direction, and we just kept in touch every
- 19:13Speaker 12: off season, we would get together.
- 19:14Speaker 6: We talked weekly, you.
- 19:17Speaker 12: Know, schematics, personnel, what they were seeing different offensively, what
- 19:23Speaker 12: we were seeing different offensive We just always kept in
- 19:25Speaker 12: touch and schematically kind.
- 19:28Speaker 6: Of stayed in the same cylinder a little bit.
- 19:33Speaker 12: And it's it's you know, it's it's he's been very
- 19:37Speaker 12: you know, he's been my mentor, you know, for pretty
- 19:39Speaker 12: much twenty years.
- 19:40Speaker 6: So it was an easy decision.
- 19:43Speaker 12: You know, my goal, you know, growing up, my goal
- 19:46Speaker 12: was to be an FCS defensive coordinator, you know, and
- 19:50Speaker 12: as good as I could be. And as I grew
- 19:54Speaker 12: and times changed, my goals got bigger.
- 19:58Speaker 14: You know.
- 19:58Speaker 6: My goal now is to be the.
- 19:59Speaker 12: Defensive coordin for a national championship team, you know. And
- 20:03Speaker 12: I think he's very aware of that, and I think
- 20:06Speaker 12: this is a place you can do it at. So
- 20:09Speaker 12: this was an easy opportunity for me. I get to
- 20:11Speaker 12: work with him, someone who I'm comfortable working with.
- 20:14Speaker 6: I get to work with the staff.
- 20:16Speaker 12: I know a lot of the guys on the staff
- 20:17Speaker 12: I'm very comfortable with. You know, his family, my family
- 20:21Speaker 12: get along really well. So it's it was it was
- 20:24Speaker 12: an easy decision go.
- 20:26Speaker 6: Left side front to Tony Katalin from the Austin American Statesman.
- 20:30Speaker 6: What's up to nice to meet.
- 20:32Speaker 15: And circling back to your coverage question and potentially being
- 20:35Speaker 15: multiple a guy like Ricky Gibson, can you talk about
- 20:37Speaker 15: some of his strengths maybe what he does for you
- 20:39Speaker 15: guys and and does he allow you to have that
- 20:41Speaker 15: you know, flexibility and coverage.
- 20:43Speaker 6: Yeah, he does.
- 20:45Speaker 12: He's the thing that you don't know because you don't
- 20:48Speaker 12: get to spend a lot of time recruiting these guys,
- 20:50Speaker 12: you know, transfer portal guys. It's it's very transactional, what's quick.
- 20:54Speaker 12: The one thing that's really surprised me is how he's
- 20:57Speaker 12: a very good learner. He's a smart kid. He list
- 21:00Speaker 12: since he listens, he looks at you in your eye,
- 21:03Speaker 12: and he you know what you tell him. He takes in,
- 21:06Speaker 12: which is a great trade to have in his day
- 21:08Speaker 12: and age.
- 21:09Speaker 6: So that's the first part.
- 21:11Speaker 12: I think he can do anything from what I've seen,
- 21:15Speaker 12: you know, just watching workouts and stuff like that.
- 21:17Speaker 6: You know, he looks like he moves pretty fluidly and
- 21:21Speaker 6: in muchness tape.
- 21:22Speaker 16: You know.
- 21:22Speaker 12: Obviously he's a good man player. He plays man well.
- 21:26Speaker 12: I think he'll have no problem playing his own. But
- 21:28Speaker 12: you know overall so far everything I've seen and very
- 21:31Speaker 12: impressed with him.
- 21:33Speaker 6: Your left side middle to Matthew he's with the student radio. Uh,
- 21:37Speaker 6: good to meet you, coach.
- 21:39Speaker 10: Just having to spend a year in the coach Chestney
- 21:40Speaker 10: and JMU before joining texting him last year. What lessons
- 21:43Speaker 10: of philosophies are you bringing to your with you into
- 21:46Speaker 10: your first year as a d C here and how
- 21:47Speaker 10: are you adapting them to this defense.
- 21:51Speaker 12: It's it's funny because Chesney is another guy that I
- 21:53Speaker 12: worked with a long time ago as well, and it's
- 21:56Speaker 12: same same deal as as Mike.
- 21:58Speaker 6: You know, we've been friends a long time, talk football
- 22:00Speaker 6: a long time.
- 22:02Speaker 12: One of the big things I took from Chesney and
- 22:05Speaker 12: I've brought to the defense it's it's a we, not
- 22:08Speaker 12: me and I and I, and we have to stop
- 22:12Speaker 12: talking in the you know, I, I and me, No
- 22:16Speaker 12: more I and me.
- 22:16Speaker 6: It's it's we and us.
- 22:18Speaker 12: It's you know, you know that's part of the together
- 22:21Speaker 12: thing we were talking about, just trying to be unselfish
- 22:25Speaker 12: as much as possible. That was something that Chez did
- 22:28Speaker 12: a great job with just teaching, and it really helps
- 22:31Speaker 12: on defense because everybody wants to go to the NFL.
- 22:33Speaker 12: Everybody wants to make plays. Everyone wants to make sacks.
- 22:36Speaker 12: Everybody wants to make interceptions, everybody wants to make big plays.
- 22:40Speaker 12: But teaching these guys that playing you know, top level defense,
- 22:44Speaker 12: you know, top ten in the country defense, that can't be.
- 22:48Speaker 6: The thought process.
- 22:49Speaker 12: The thought process has got to be we, you know,
- 22:53Speaker 12: us that type of thing. And that's the number one
- 22:56Speaker 12: thing that Chez you know, I took from Chez, you know,
- 22:59Speaker 12: and it's been a it's been a long time too,
- 23:01Speaker 12: from working with Chez. I worked with him over you know,
- 23:04Speaker 12: before Elco, and he's got a really good philosophy.
- 23:08Speaker 6: He runs a really good program.
- 23:11Speaker 12: But I thought that was the biggest thing, you know,
- 23:14Speaker 12: And it was kind of one of those things you
- 23:15Speaker 12: didn't know when when I first started working for him,
- 23:18Speaker 12: if it was just you know, coach speak or whatever
- 23:21Speaker 12: it may be.
- 23:22Speaker 6: But man, that dude lived it every day.
- 23:24Speaker 12: He lived it every day and there's the reason why
- 23:27Speaker 12: he's winning.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Left side middle to Rob Havens from agueland Illustrated. What's up, Rob,
- 23:32Speaker 6: how do you coach?
- 23:34Speaker 17: So tell me about what your thoughts were about Texas
- 23:37Speaker 17: A and M from Afar and then also having looked
- 23:42Speaker 17: at the SEC. What do you think it takes to
- 23:44Speaker 17: be a defensive defensive coordinator successful in this late.
- 23:49Speaker 12: Looking from looking at Texas A and M from Afar,
- 23:55Speaker 12: I didn't think the players would be this invested in
- 23:59Speaker 12: in football, to be.
- 24:00Speaker 6: Honest with you, I thought they would be. You just
- 24:02Speaker 6: get this idea.
- 24:03Speaker 12: When you're from the Northeast at SEC football, these guys
- 24:06Speaker 12: are just you know, you read these stories about all
- 24:10Speaker 12: the guys getting in trouble and stuff like that, and
- 24:12Speaker 12: you come down here and like, these kids are They're
- 24:14Speaker 12: great kids.
- 24:15Speaker 6: They love football.
- 24:16Speaker 12: They just want to play ball, Like that's what they
- 24:18Speaker 12: want to do. They want to play ball, they want
- 24:19Speaker 12: to learn ball, they want to get better. That's a
- 24:21Speaker 12: huge surprise to me, which is great. Like I love it.
- 24:24Speaker 12: I love it here. I love working with the kids.
- 24:26Speaker 12: Every day they come in like get me better. Like
- 24:30Speaker 12: that's kind of the thought process for those guys, And like,
- 24:34Speaker 12: how can you not love to.
- 24:35Speaker 6: Come to work.
- 24:36Speaker 12: You got to be fundamentally sound, Like you really have
- 24:39Speaker 12: to be fund mentally sound. And that's one of the
- 24:41Speaker 12: big things we're taking on the spring, Like we've got
- 24:43Speaker 12: to become fundamentally better tacklers. Fundamentally better pursuers of the ball.
- 24:47Speaker 12: We've got to be fundamentally better taking the ball away. Like,
- 24:50Speaker 12: those are the things the great defenses do. They don't
- 24:52Speaker 12: miss tackles, they don't drop interceptions, they don't just sack
- 24:56Speaker 12: the quarterback, they sack, fumble the quarterback.
- 24:59Speaker 6: Those are what the great defenses do. You know, missing.
- 25:03Speaker 12: Tackles, that's that's that's something that we've got to fix.
- 25:06Speaker 12: You know, missing opportunities for takeaways, that's something.
- 25:09Speaker 6: We've got to fix.
- 25:10Speaker 12: You just look at those fundamentally, there's really really good
- 25:13Speaker 12: go back, you know, six or seven years to Texas
- 25:15Speaker 12: A and M and when they were one of the
- 25:17Speaker 12: top five defense in the country.
- 25:18Speaker 6: That's what they did.
- 25:19Speaker 12: They turned people over. They didn't miss tackles, they killed quarterbacks,
- 25:23Speaker 12: and not only did they kill them, but they were getting.
- 25:25Speaker 14: The ball back.
- 25:26Speaker 12: That's what we've got to get it to, I think,
- 25:28Speaker 12: to be the top one of the top defenses. I mean, schematically,
- 25:33Speaker 12: everybody's doing somewhat some variation of the same thing, but
- 25:39Speaker 12: it's it's where the fundamentals are.
- 25:41Speaker 6: I think that's that's the kind of brings you to
- 25:43Speaker 6: the top.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Wile's got his game face on already, and it's not
- 25:48Speaker 1: even April yet.
- 25:50Speaker 3: It's just March. Love that.
- 25:57Speaker 14: Club.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Missing tackles, get the ball. That's what defenses should do.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Tackle really well, get the ball. You know, he was
- 26:10Speaker 1: at James Madison, but that was right after Signetti, I
- 26:13Speaker 1: guess had had gone to Indiana. But I would tell
- 26:21Speaker 1: him in every coach, just just watch tape of the
- 26:25Speaker 1: Indiana team this last year. Watch them fundamentally. You don't
- 26:31Speaker 1: remember them missing a lot of tackles, you don't remember them.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I mean, they were just so fun to watch.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I guess one of the most, if not the most
- 26:44Speaker 1: fundamentally sound college team I've ever watched, which is why
- 26:48Speaker 1: they won a Natty.
- 26:50Speaker 3: And they had talent. You gotta have talent, right, They
- 26:52Speaker 3: had a pretty good quarterback, I'd say pretty good quarterback.
- 26:59Speaker 1: But they had a lot of other good players too
- 27:01Speaker 1: that didn't make mistakes. So anyway, that's that's the defense
- 27:04Speaker 1: we're gonna hear from a guy who really from the
- 27:09Speaker 1: first time in my mind, he got playing time. Damian Sanford,
- 27:13Speaker 1: who became a handful for the offenses last year. He
- 27:17Speaker 1: just popped when he came in the game. He made
- 27:19Speaker 1: plays kind of looking forward to seeing how he progresses. Trey,
- 27:28Speaker 1: this just in can we do that?
- 27:31Speaker 3: This is for.
- 27:33Speaker 18: All of the Houston Astros fans. World Series Champion Christian
- 27:41Speaker 18: Vasquez has won the Astros backup catchers job. Astros informed
- 27:50Speaker 18: catchers saysar Salazar today.
- 27:53Speaker 1: That he will not make the opening day roster. He'll
- 27:57Speaker 1: be put on waivers. Is has made the opening day roster.
- 28:05Speaker 1: This these are the kind of nuggets we hope that
- 28:08Speaker 1: Scott is going to be bringing us from the juice box.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Actually it's not the juice box anymore. It's the ice box.
- 28:18Speaker 1: And I don't know. I still don't know if it's
- 28:20Speaker 1: Dakon or Dykin. How do we pronounce the name of
- 28:25Speaker 1: if you know, let me know at six ninety three
- 28:27Speaker 1: eleven fifty because honestly, I still don't know. I've heard
- 28:35Speaker 1: it called both. But anyway, they start Thursday afternoon.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Okay, we're going to take a break.
- 28:47Speaker 1: We've got a high school report and it is it
- 28:49Speaker 1: is fresh, it is up to date.
- 28:54Speaker 3: Caleb was just here.
- 28:56Speaker 1: He just did the interview with coach Hard and that
- 29:02Speaker 1: will be fun. We're gonna hear from Kelvin Sampson. Mallory
- 29:08Speaker 1: has all the entertainment news coming up. We still have
- 29:15Speaker 1: spring football interviews with Sanford and with Ruben Owens. We
- 29:19Speaker 1: have got Aggie baseball coming your way at five forty five. Okay,
- 29:27Speaker 1: Houston Christian first pitch, gonna be another great night for baseball.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I'm telling you we have had really good baseball weather.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I mean, that's good for the fans. It's terrible for
- 29:39Speaker 1: my yard. I'm just telling you, it is horrible for
- 29:43Speaker 1: my yard. I'm gonna have to turn on my sprinkler
- 29:46Speaker 1: system and I don't want to do that in March.
- 29:49Speaker 1: I really don't want to do that. But if I'm
- 29:53Speaker 1: gonna have grass this summer, I'm gonna have to Sefcheck
- 29:58Speaker 1: Service Center is open right now. They're open until six.
- 30:02Speaker 1: They reopened in the mornings at seven, seven to six
- 30:06Speaker 1: Monday through Friday, seven to four. On Saturdays, that's the
- 30:10Speaker 1: garage area. The gasoline island opens earlier, stays open later.
- 30:14Speaker 1: You know it came by Sunday people are there filling up.
- 30:19Speaker 1: So yeah, you look, Pat is just continuing a business
- 30:28Speaker 1: that his dad started like fifty three fifty four years
- 30:32Speaker 1: ago and has just has been one of the top
- 30:37Speaker 1: businesses in this area for how they treat customers, how
- 30:41Speaker 1: they value customers, and how they take care of people.
- 30:45Speaker 1: And that's a big deal. When you want your car
- 30:48Speaker 1: your truck repaired, that's a real big deal, whether it's
- 30:51Speaker 1: foreign or domestic, gasoline or diesel engine. Every single day
- 30:55Speaker 1: and there's no better place to go for emergencies, dead batteries,
- 30:59Speaker 1: flat tire. They do this every single day and oil
- 31:03Speaker 1: changes around back. Which by the way, boys, I'm I'm
- 31:06Speaker 1: coming in soon. If this week, if I can find
- 31:09Speaker 1: the time sefcheck service center, twenty two hundred long marriages
- 31:12Speaker 1: down from the post office in College Station is ce
- 31:17Speaker 1: J Barbecue.
- 31:18Speaker 19: Okay, So for the ad, I'm thinking fog machines, laser lines.
- 31:22Speaker 20: Maybe see free uh yes, like actually free?
- 31:27Speaker 6: Yes, every Wednesday night so I can.

- 33:29Speaker 6: Welcome into the High School Report.
- 33:32Speaker 19: I'm Caleb Rapley, and today we are jumping out to
- 33:35Speaker 19: the Polaris Fund Center phone line to visit with the
- 33:37Speaker 19: head coach of the Montgomery Lake Creek Lady Lyons softball team,
- 33:41Speaker 19: Miss Candice Carter, coach, Thanks for joining me today.
- 33:45Speaker 24: Thank you so much, happy to be here.
- 33:48Speaker 19: So, your Lady Lion's coming off of an undefeated state
- 33:51Speaker 19: championship winning season, which you know, going undefeated in baseball
- 33:55Speaker 19: or softball is almost unheard of, So congratulations on that.
- 34:00Speaker 19: This year, another hot start twenty one to one on
- 34:03Speaker 19: the season. So how were you able to keep that
- 34:06Speaker 19: momentum going from last year into this season.
- 34:10Speaker 24: Yeah, I'm really proud of what the girls were able
- 34:12Speaker 24: to accomplish last year. It was a total team effort
- 34:15Speaker 24: from players to coaches, to parents to managers. I mean,
- 34:18Speaker 24: it really took a lot of people to make a
- 34:20Speaker 24: season like that be so special and happen. Just looking
- 34:23Speaker 24: forward to this season. We didn't change anything. We're not
- 34:27Speaker 24: trying to recreate anything. We just want to make sure
- 34:29Speaker 24: to keep it very simple. Focus on one game at
- 34:31Speaker 24: a time, one pitch at a time, one inning at
- 34:33Speaker 24: a time. We try to keep things very simple. We
- 34:37Speaker 24: don't want to get too big, don't want to look
- 34:38Speaker 24: outside too much, just want to stay focused on what's
- 34:40Speaker 24: going on with us and within our team.
- 34:44Speaker 19: So at a program like Lake Creek, which has been
- 34:46Speaker 19: known for lots of success in softball over the last
- 34:50Speaker 19: ten years and that state championship last year, is that
- 34:54Speaker 19: sometimes an issue for your players having that pressure on them.
- 35:00Speaker 8: You know?
- 35:01Speaker 24: I mean I think that goes with any sports that
- 35:03Speaker 24: you're playing. You know, failure is such a big part
- 35:05Speaker 24: of it, and sometimes failure can add some pressure that
- 35:09Speaker 24: you maybe put on yourself that doesn't necessarily need to
- 35:12Speaker 24: be there. I definitely think that the pressure is there,
- 35:15Speaker 24: but we do our best to talk about it, make
- 35:18Speaker 24: sure that the girls feel like their voices are heard,
- 35:20Speaker 24: and just making sure that they feel like they're in
- 35:22Speaker 24: the right headspace. We focus on a lot of mental
- 35:24Speaker 24: training and making sure that if there is some failure, adversity,
- 35:27Speaker 24: or expectations being put on them. They just understand that
- 35:31Speaker 24: we just want them to have fun. We want them
- 35:32Speaker 24: to play to their best ability and represent Lake Creaksoftball
- 35:35Speaker 24: well and at the end of the day, if we
- 35:36Speaker 24: did that, then we considered it a successful day.
- 35:40Speaker 19: So in any high school sport, graduation is something that
- 35:44Speaker 19: turns over rosters year after year. So this season, who
- 35:49Speaker 19: are some of the younger players that have stepped up
- 35:51Speaker 19: to fill the void of the seniors that have left.
- 35:57Speaker 24: Yeah, we graduated a couple of seniors. Last year, we
- 35:59Speaker 24: graduated three. We have nine seniors this year, so it's
- 36:02Speaker 24: a really big senior class. We've had some really good
- 36:05Speaker 24: younger ones step in between our sophomores and juniors. We've
- 36:08Speaker 24: had a Brady Gossett and Ameles Torrez, Macey Noak. We've
- 36:12Speaker 24: got a lot of kids that are ready to step
- 36:15Speaker 24: into their moment. With a large group of seniors in
- 36:17Speaker 24: front of them makes that a little bit difficult, but
- 36:19Speaker 24: we really feel like anybody off the bench can come
- 36:21Speaker 24: in and be successful for Lake Kris Ball.
- 36:25Speaker 19: So, looking at this year's schedule started out five and
- 36:28Speaker 19: zero district play, so you've got a pretty good idea
- 36:31Speaker 19: of what to expect from each of your district teams.
- 36:34Speaker 19: What have been your thoughts on district play so far?
- 36:39Speaker 24: Yeah, district play has been great. It's been competitive. We
- 36:42Speaker 24: had a really competitive game of College Station. They're always
- 36:45Speaker 24: a really respectable, tough opponent, and we've seen some great
- 36:48Speaker 24: hitters between our districts and pitching and things like that,
- 36:51Speaker 24: and so really like the direction we're headed in to
- 36:54Speaker 24: get ready for hopefully a great postseason run.
- 36:58Speaker 19: So today y'all will be taking on Brenham at home.
- 37:02Speaker 19: I think it's the only district team that y'all haven't
- 37:05Speaker 19: played yet. So what do you know about the about Brinham?
- 37:08Speaker 19: What do you expect to see?
- 37:11Speaker 24: Yeah, Brenham is a really well coached, disciplined team. They've
- 37:14Speaker 24: got a couple of good arms, they've got a few
- 37:16Speaker 24: seniors leading the top of that lineup, and really competitive
- 37:20Speaker 24: team that are going to do the little things right.
- 37:22Speaker 24: We don't focus too much on what they're going to do, though,
- 37:25Speaker 24: we do give a scouting report on the arms and
- 37:27Speaker 24: things of that nature, but for the most part, we
- 37:30Speaker 24: know that if we do our job and we focus
- 37:32Speaker 24: on what our plan is and our scout, then we'll
- 37:35Speaker 24: be successful at the.
- 37:35Speaker 25: End of the day.
- 37:38Speaker 19: So you mentioned earlier, you know, getting ready for hopefully
- 37:41Speaker 19: another good postseason run. Have you had a chance to,
- 37:45Speaker 19: you know, look at the region and some idea of
- 37:47Speaker 19: who you might be matching up against.
- 37:49Speaker 22: No.
- 37:50Speaker 24: I try to take my own advice that we give
- 37:52Speaker 24: to the kids and keep it very simple, taking it
- 37:54Speaker 24: one game at a time. I definitely think we still
- 37:58Speaker 24: don't know. You know, we still have a lot of
- 38:00Speaker 24: ball left in our district, so who knows what's going
- 38:02Speaker 24: to happen. And also, you know, without knowing the division,
- 38:05Speaker 24: you know, will we be one, WI will be two?
- 38:07Speaker 24: We didn't know until at the very end last year.
- 38:09Speaker 24: I think it's gonna shake out the same way. Not
- 38:10Speaker 24: gonna know, So we're just gonna stay focused on district,
- 38:13Speaker 24: taking it one game at a time. We really try
- 38:15Speaker 24: to preach that as much as possible. Sometimes we tend
- 38:18Speaker 24: to stray away from a little bit. But if we
- 38:19Speaker 24: can stay within ourselves on focusing on that, I try
- 38:23Speaker 24: to heed that on advice as well.
- 38:25Speaker 19: Next question I have is kind of more of an
- 38:27Speaker 19: administration thing with the diamond sports baseball and softball. You know,
- 38:32Speaker 19: the first probably half of the season is mostly tournaments.
- 38:36Speaker 19: How do you go about, you know, selecting which tournaments
- 38:38Speaker 19: you play in? Are those invitation mostly or do you
- 38:41Speaker 19: do do you reach out to other coaches?
- 38:43Speaker 6: How does that work for you?
- 38:45Speaker 24: Yeah, a lot of people will send out emails on
- 38:48Speaker 24: tournament invites and things like that. We did get invited
- 38:51Speaker 24: to the Barbarushil Invitational this week this year. I do
- 38:54Speaker 24: believe that is an invitational. But the other two that
- 38:56Speaker 24: we're in with the NFCA, that's probably the largest tournament
- 39:00Speaker 24: in the state. It's a huge, great tournament put on
- 39:02Speaker 24: by the NFCA lead Off Classic and Billy Hicks and
- 39:05Speaker 24: Henry que Luna. They just run an absolutely great tournament
- 39:08Speaker 24: with that. And for the most part, all tournaments are
- 39:11Speaker 24: you just kind of choose which one you think is
- 39:13Speaker 24: going to be best for your team and two are
- 39:15Speaker 24: the opponents that are going to be there, and go
- 39:17Speaker 24: about it that way.
- 39:20Speaker 19: All right, coach, Well, I appreciate your time today and
- 39:22Speaker 19: good luck to your lady Lions this season.

- 44:39Speaker 1: Scottlandden and will join us tomorrow. Coach Steve Denton also
- 44:43Speaker 1: tomorrow on the program. On Thursday evening, the Houston Cougars
- 44:52Speaker 1: will well Well host. They'll take on in Illinois, but
- 44:56Speaker 1: they'll be at the Toyota Center. Tickets are at a
- 44:59Speaker 1: pre because Nebraska and Iowa and Houston fans and Illinois travels. Okay,
- 45:07Speaker 1: I mean, I'm telling you, they are a premium for
- 45:11Speaker 1: Thursday's action. Aggie fans got to see Houston up close
- 45:19Speaker 1: and personal on Saturday. It wasn't pretty, but it was Houston.
- 45:26Speaker 1: This team is in their seventh straight Sweet sixteen.
- 45:32Speaker 14: Okay.
- 45:35Speaker 3: They were within.
- 45:37Speaker 1: One play of winning the national championship last year. They
- 45:42Speaker 1: have been really close under Calvin Sampson. Their into the
- 45:48Speaker 1: bracket was helped with the Florida upset quite frankly, but
- 45:54Speaker 1: they were going to have their hands full on Thursday
- 45:57Speaker 1: with Illinois. I promise you if you've seen Woggler play,
- 46:02Speaker 1: that kid scored somewhere between forty and fifty in a game.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Earlier this year, like forty five, forty six points, Illinois
- 46:10Speaker 1: can play Houston's gonna have to be good to get
- 46:14Speaker 1: to the Elite eight and play either Iowa or Nebraska.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Here's Kelvin Sampson from I think this video conference was
- 46:25Speaker 1: done yesterday.
- 46:28Speaker 29: Yeah, I don't really have a whole lot of attention
- 46:30Speaker 29: to the numbers. I have no idea what I mean points,
- 46:33Speaker 29: the averages are. I'm pretty sure he's average around eight
- 46:37Speaker 29: rebounds the game. I'm quite sure exactly what it is.
- 46:40Speaker 29: But Chris is grown in every area. You freshmen are
- 46:47Speaker 29: just different species. They're not the same as everybody else.
- 46:53Speaker 29: Mercy Miller is a great example. There's not very many
- 46:58Speaker 29: freshmen in Erica going to come in and play on
- 47:01Speaker 29: last year's team because of the experience on that team.
- 47:05Speaker 29: This year, we've decided, we made the conscious decision to
- 47:10Speaker 29: go with Chris and Kingston from day one, you know,
- 47:18Speaker 29: I you know, I always thought that Kingston would start
- 47:23Speaker 29: for us this year. I wasn't always quite sure how
- 47:26Speaker 29: it would fit, but I was pretty sure that he
- 47:29Speaker 29: was going to start because he was always one of
- 47:32Speaker 29: our best players. After obviously he started playing, people got
- 47:36Speaker 29: to figure out what we knew two years ago, but
- 47:40Speaker 29: Chris was a little different and he was our biggest
- 47:43Speaker 29: challenge because of the position change. He's always been five
- 47:47Speaker 29: in high school and he had to transition to ben
- 47:50Speaker 29: a four and that's not easy. So our team, Chris
- 47:56Speaker 29: didn't hold us back. We just had to wait for
- 47:59Speaker 29: him to progress him make Kingston both so so our
- 48:04Speaker 29: defense wasn't as good last year. Well who's wilds. Anytime
- 48:09Speaker 29: you change personnel, especially with freshmen, you're gonna take a
- 48:11Speaker 29: step back, and we did take a step back, but
- 48:15Speaker 29: we've continued to work to be the best we can be.
- 48:18Speaker 29: I don't ever try to get teams to be like
- 48:20Speaker 29: other teams because they're not the same players. But I've
- 48:25Speaker 29: been proud of Chris's growth in every year. He found
- 48:30Speaker 29: something he could be good at, which is rebounding and
- 48:34Speaker 29: when you lose, when we tell our kids, when you
- 48:37Speaker 29: lose yourself and an area of game that's important that
- 48:42Speaker 29: maybe it wasn't the strength of yours when you came in,
- 48:47Speaker 29: the other parts of your game will start to come
- 48:49Speaker 29: because now you're relaxed. If you focus on trying to
- 48:53Speaker 29: score and you're trying to make a shot, that doesn't
- 48:55Speaker 29: work that way. So I think Chris's growth, and it's
- 49:00Speaker 29: especially the rebounding area has has uh has.
- 49:04Speaker 14: Given him a sense of self worth.
- 49:06Speaker 29: You know, easiest kids to motivate or the kids with
- 49:09Speaker 29: the highest self esteem, And I think chris Is self
- 49:13Speaker 29: esteem right now is really high.
- 49:15Speaker 30: And if I could piggyback off that you asked, you
- 49:17Speaker 30: mentioned something about Mercy, can you share some perspective and
- 49:20Speaker 30: thoughts on him and just how his game has progressed
- 49:23Speaker 30: and just maybe what's different and what's really changed again
- 49:27Speaker 30: as it seemed as if his play is improved as
- 49:29Speaker 30: the years gone.
- 49:31Speaker 14: Yeah, I think you know the way the way that.
- 49:37Speaker 29: I evaluate players, as we put him in his real,
- 49:42Speaker 29: real game situations and practice, whether you can see where
- 49:45Speaker 29: they're making their mistakes sort of areas where they need
- 49:48Speaker 29: to improve. And when you put Mercy in certain situations,
- 49:53Speaker 29: you can tell those are the areas that he needed
- 49:55Speaker 29: to improve in the most.
- 50:00Speaker 14: But Chris and Mercy, both those guys.
- 50:08Speaker 29: The areas that they need to improve it in was
- 50:10Speaker 29: just read and react to game speed in situations they
- 50:15Speaker 29: just had not been in. Most kids come out of
- 50:18Speaker 29: high school don't really plan a defensive system. They play
- 50:21Speaker 29: defense but it's not a system where you're responsible for
- 50:25Speaker 29: the other four guys by being on time.
- 50:28Speaker 14: And you know, in space, you've got to get to.
- 50:31Speaker 29: A certain area the court, and you're reading the screen,
- 50:35Speaker 29: you're reading the role, you're reading the guys that are
- 50:39Speaker 29: feeling behind or going through and cutting through the other corners.
- 50:43Speaker 29: You know, a lot of these offenses are complicated. You know,
- 50:46Speaker 29: they're not just in high school. Most guys just stand
- 50:49Speaker 29: around and college they move and it takes a while
- 50:52Speaker 29: to get adjusted to that. Whereas a guy like Wilson
- 50:56Speaker 29: had six years to make all his mistakes his first time,
- 51:00Speaker 29: with three years, Mercy got the opportunity this year and
- 51:06Speaker 29: he struggled some, but he struggled in a good way.
- 51:09Speaker 29: Those were correctible mistakes, you know, mistakes and mistakes and
- 51:14Speaker 29: failures never a final it's often the impetus for future
- 51:19Speaker 29: for success. But Mercy has really improved. He still got
- 51:24Speaker 29: a long way to go. It's not nobody's gonna be
- 51:27Speaker 29: confusing it with Defensive Player of the Year yet. But
- 51:33Speaker 29: I think there's Mercy has a high ceiling above him
- 51:36Speaker 29: in every area. He's only going to get better and better,
- 51:39Speaker 29: just like Chris has.
- 51:41Speaker 31: And good morning, if you could maybe pick out one
- 51:46Speaker 31: or two or three. However, Manny, you want factors that
- 51:49Speaker 31: have allowed you to get this program to the point
- 51:51Speaker 31: where you make seven straight sweet sixteens.
- 51:54Speaker 14: What would you say to that.
- 51:59Speaker 29: Have to define system and it's got to be your system.
- 52:05Speaker 29: I don't look at other programs to decide what we're
- 52:08Speaker 29: going to do. I had a vision for how I
- 52:11Speaker 29: wanted the team to play, and then we had to
- 52:14Speaker 29: go get good enough players that could execute the system.
- 52:19Speaker 29: And sometimes you got to be stubborn.
- 52:22Speaker 14: Sometimes you got to be hard headed.
- 52:24Speaker 29: Sometimes you've got to learn the coach one eye open
- 52:27Speaker 29: and one air closed. I would say those are the
- 52:30Speaker 29: key points, and with the big emphasis on having good players.
- 52:36Speaker 6: Coach, thank you, You're welcome.
- 52:38Speaker 14: Hey, coach, how's it going? Hey, Terrence? Hey?
- 52:41Speaker 9: I mean, just to kind of piggyback off of the
- 52:43Speaker 9: last question about the seventh straight sweet sixteens?
- 52:48Speaker 14: Do they do they?
- 52:49Speaker 9: Does this change for you and all each from year
- 52:51Speaker 9: to year, or your feelings about it or your approach
- 52:55Speaker 9: to it? I mean, where is it always kind of
- 52:56Speaker 9: the same.
- 52:59Speaker 14: The latter. I don't put a whole lot of stuff
- 53:02Speaker 14: in that stuff.
- 53:04Speaker 29: The only thing I know is every year, I have
- 53:06Speaker 29: a different team. You start over every year. It doesn't
- 53:11Speaker 29: go year to year. Is there's a period at the
- 53:14Speaker 29: end of every year, and then you have a capital
- 53:20Speaker 29: letter on your first letter in the next sentence or
- 53:24Speaker 29: the next paragraph for the next chapter, really chapter.
- 53:27Speaker 14: You just finish your chapter, and these chapters marked by
- 53:31Speaker 14: the year.
- 53:33Speaker 29: You know, seventeen eighteen, that chapter ended, so we had
- 53:37Speaker 29: to start a new chapter. And there's no guarantees that
- 53:39Speaker 29: it's going to work because you have to go out
- 53:42Speaker 29: recruit and you have to evaluate, and then you have
- 53:46Speaker 29: another period at the end of the year you start
- 53:49Speaker 29: over again. It's not a continuation. You know, we lost L. J. Cryer,
- 53:55Speaker 29: Jay and Roberts, J. Vier Francis and Malie Wilson and
- 54:00Speaker 29: Terrence Arsen, though all five of those guys were major,
- 54:05Speaker 29: major contributors to last year's team. But as soon as
- 54:09Speaker 29: twenty four to twenty five seed ended, we put a
- 54:12Speaker 29: period at the end of it. Then you start another
- 54:15Speaker 29: chapter and there's no guarantees it's going to succeed, but
- 54:19Speaker 29: you have to trust yourself, trust what you're doing. But
- 54:25Speaker 29: we have a system here, so it's not like, you know,
- 54:28Speaker 29: we're just pulling names out of the hat. We really
- 54:30Speaker 29: evaluate the kids that we want to we want to coach,
- 54:33Speaker 29: and that we want.
- 54:34Speaker 14: To go to battle with.
- 54:39Speaker 29: So we we've always been pretty good at that through
- 54:42Speaker 29: the years, through the decades, really now encounterment decades. But
- 54:49Speaker 29: but that's the way I look at it, Terrence. Every season,
- 54:53Speaker 29: every season has an end, and then the next season
- 54:57Speaker 29: starts anew and we try to do the best we
- 55:00Speaker 29: can with the players we have.
- 55:05Speaker 14: And see what happens. You know, I've learned a.
- 55:10Speaker 29: Lot over the years just on how to put a
- 55:13Speaker 29: team together. But you have to put it together through
- 55:15Speaker 29: your eyes and through your lens, because that's the only
- 55:18Speaker 29: one that matters.
- 55:19Speaker 1: Covin Sampson is seventy, Rick Patino is seventy three. They're
- 55:26Speaker 1: both have shots at going to the Final four. So
- 55:31Speaker 1: we'll see what happens. We were just looking at the spreads.
- 55:34Speaker 1: Houston is a we said three and a half point
- 55:37Speaker 1: favorite over Illinois on Thursday and the Nebraska Iowa game.
- 55:43Speaker 1: Nebraska is a one and a half point favorite over Iowa.
- 55:46Speaker 1: That is the early game at the Toyota Center. The
- 55:50Speaker 1: get in price is four hundred and sixty dollars. That

- 56:34Speaker 1: the work done, and they'll get it done.
