- 0:00Speaker 1: Which seems like everybody's on them. GLP-1s. Now they're being
- 0:05Speaker 1: taunted as, not taunted, what's the right word? Being categorized
- 0:11Speaker 1: as miracle drugs. They keep you living longer. They stop diabetes.
- 0:18Speaker 1: They stop cancer. You name it. New article comes out
- 0:22Speaker 1: and says, are they really the miracle drugs that everybody
- 0:25Speaker 1: says they are? We'll dive into this. Stay tuned. Hi
- 0:28Speaker 1: and welcome to Health Talk with Dr. Len, your daily dose.
- 0:31Speaker 1: The information you hear on this show is informational.
- 0:34Speaker 2: It's not meant to diagnose or treat any disease. Any
- 0:37Speaker 2: kind of complete health conditions must be checked out and
- 0:42Speaker 2: discussed with your primary care physician. Get ready for the
- 0:45Speaker 2: good news of the day.
- 0:47Speaker 1: God bless you folks.
- 0:49Speaker 2: And here is Dr.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Len. Our daily devotional today for October 10th comes from
- 0:53Speaker 1: the book of Psalms chapter 17. Trust me enough to
- 0:56Speaker 1: let things happen. without striving to predict or control them.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Relax and refresh yourself in the light of my everlasting love.
- 1:04Speaker 1: My love light never dims, yet you're often unaware of
- 1:07Speaker 1: my radiant presence. When you project yourself into the future,
- 1:12Speaker 1: rehearsing what you will do or say, you're seeking to
- 1:15Speaker 1: be self-sufficient, to be adequate without my help. This is
- 1:19Speaker 1: a subtle sin, so common that it usually slips by unnoticed.
- 1:24Speaker 1: The alternative is to live fully in the present, depending
- 1:27Speaker 1: on me each moment. Rather than fearing your inadequacy, rejoice
- 1:31Speaker 1: in my abundant supply. Train your mind to seek my
- 1:34Speaker 1: help continually, even when you feel competent to handle something
- 1:37Speaker 1: by yourself. Don't divide your life into things you can't
- 1:41Speaker 1: do by yourself and things that require my help. Instead,
- 1:45Speaker 1: learn to rely on me in every situation. This discipline
- 1:49Speaker 1: will enable you to enjoy life more and to face
- 1:53Speaker 1: each day confidently. Stay tuned. 727-916-4215. Are GLP-1s really miracle drugs?
- 2:54Speaker 1: The drug shows promise across multiple diseases. but the story
- 3:21Speaker 1: is more complex. Jen Weaver started taking a glucagon-like peptide 1,
- 3:26Speaker 1: GLP-1 medication to lose weight, was surprised to find out
- 3:30Speaker 1: that it also relieved her joint pain. Weaver has had
- 3:33Speaker 1: rheumatoid arthritis for years. Twice a night she woke up
- 3:36Speaker 1: with aching, sometimes stabbing pain in her shoulders and hips.
- 3:39Speaker 1: It would take 30 minutes to fall back asleep. What's worse,
- 3:42Speaker 1: her limited ability to exercise and the side effects of
- 3:45Speaker 1: medication caused her to gain 70 pounds. She needed to
- 3:49Speaker 1: lose weight, but more than that, she wanted free of
- 3:51Speaker 1: pain so she could get to the floor and play
- 3:53Speaker 1: with her grandkids. Research presented at the American College of
- 3:56Speaker 1: Rheumatology's annual meeting stood out to her, suggesting that GLP-1
- 4:00Speaker 1: drugs not only reduce weight, but also reduce rheumatoid arthritis flares.
- 4:05Speaker 1: That something else is what's been making headlines in the
- 4:07Speaker 1: past two years. Studies are finding that GLP-1 drugs may
- 4:11Speaker 1: fight a growing list of diseases and conditions. Inflammation, metabolic dysfunction,
- 4:16Speaker 1: heart disease, dementia, and even cancer. The popular weight loss
- 4:20Speaker 1: drug is now gaining recognition as a drug with far-reaching potential.
- 4:24Speaker 1: But is it too good to be true? Understanding that
- 4:28Speaker 1: GLP-1s mimic a natural compound. Yeah, there's something different about GLP-1.
- 4:36Speaker 1: They mimic a peptide normally released by gut cells after
- 4:39Speaker 1: we eat, reducing blood glucose levels. Because it's naturally occurring,
- 4:44Speaker 1: GLP-1s and the drugs act on the same receptors. Dr.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Jens Holst, one of the pioneering scientists behind the discovery
- 4:52Speaker 1: and development of GLP-1, said, The receptors are widespread in
- 4:56Speaker 1: the body, in the brain, and across various organs, so
- 4:59Speaker 1: GLP-1's effects go beyond weight loss. One of its extra
- 5:03Speaker 1: effects is on inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. They
- 5:08Speaker 1: fight inflammation in two ways, indirect through weight loss itself,
- 5:11Speaker 1: and actually reducing inflammation. A meta-analysis published in Journal of
- 5:15Speaker 1: Diabetes says, found that GLP-1s were associated with significant reduction
- 5:18Speaker 1: in five inflammation biomarkers used to monitor type 2 diabetes
- 5:22Speaker 1: and autoimmune disease. That direct anti-inflammatory effect is what patients
- 5:27Speaker 1: such as Sarah Landstrom noticed outside the context of any
- 5:30Speaker 1: disease she was being treated for. She was on Wegovy
- 5:34Speaker 1: for weight loss, but over nine months in 2022, the
- 5:37Speaker 1: painful swollen boils and abscesses of a condition called hydrandentitis
- 5:43Speaker 1: suprativa which had flared for years, stopped appearing. Research published
- 5:48Speaker 1: in JAMA Dermatology found that for those who were overweight
- 5:50Speaker 1: or obese, GLP-1s cut skin flares in half. GLP-1 inflammation-fighting
- 5:56Speaker 1: effects connect to something bigger, metabolism. Metabolism turns food into
- 6:00Speaker 1: usable energy to fuel every chemical reaction in the body.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It's linked to diabetes, heart disease, depression, dementia, and increasingly cancer.
- 6:09Speaker 1: GLP-1 drugs work differently than the older weight loss drugs.
- 6:13Speaker 1: which mostly suppressed appetite. Appetite-suppressing drugs can curb hunger in
- 6:17Speaker 1: the short term, but they don't fix the underlying metabolic problem.
- 6:21Speaker 1: GLP-1 drugs instead target the hormones that regulate blood sugar
- 6:24Speaker 1: and insulin. Weight loss on its own is already linked
- 6:28Speaker 1: to a lower risk of 13 different types of cancer,
- 6:32Speaker 1: which together account for about 40% of all cancer cases.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Researchers found that the spread of cancer was lower among
- 6:39Speaker 1: six cancer types in patients taking GLP-1 drugs. a statistically
- 6:44Speaker 1: significant reduction in non-small cell lung, breast, colorectal, and liver cancer.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Another large observational study covering more than 217,000 women found
- 6:55Speaker 1: that the breast cancer incident was 30% lower, three and
- 6:58Speaker 1: a half years among women taking GLP-1 drugs, compared with
- 7:01Speaker 1: those who won't. GLP-1s aren't the only drug with potential
- 7:07Speaker 1: for far-reaching unexpected effects. Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors... Type
- 7:13Speaker 1: 2 diabetes drugs such as dapaglifosin work by removing extra
- 7:18Speaker 1: sugar from the kidneys. Research has found they improve cell energy,
- 7:22Speaker 1: reduce inflammation, turn genes on and off, and promote cell cleanup.
- 7:26Speaker 1: So what are the risks? One key difference between GLP-1s
- 7:30Speaker 1: and natural GLP-1 our body makes is that natural GLP-1
- 7:34Speaker 1: is very short-lived and degrades rapidly. GLP-1 drugs are engineered
- 7:38Speaker 1: to last days or weeks rather than minutes. In other words,
- 7:41Speaker 1: The drugs match what has become ordinary, a lifestyle of larger,
- 7:45Speaker 1: more frequent meals and snacking. GLP-1 drugs are not risk-free,
- 7:49Speaker 1: and doctors are wary of the current enthusiasm outrunning the evidence.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Here are some things to watch out for. Known side effects,
- 7:56Speaker 1: gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal problems. Long-term effects, these drugs haven't
- 8:03Speaker 1: been widely used for long enough to know what happens
- 8:05Speaker 1: after years of continual use. Duration. More than half of
- 8:09Speaker 1: Americans who start GLP-1 drugs quit within a year. Because
- 8:14Speaker 1: of the popularity of GLP-1s, compounded and gray market versions
- 8:17Speaker 1: have created an opening for disreputable sellers, and patients have
- 8:21Speaker 1: received compromised or ineffective products as a result. Doctors are
- 8:25Speaker 1: explicitly warning against self-prescribing. It's too soon for broad, off-label
- 8:30Speaker 1: use of GLP-1s. Also, our body generates its GLP-1 through
- 8:38Speaker 1: various ways.
- 8:39Speaker 2: And there is a.
- 8:40Speaker 1: New prep called ProBio3 by Nutritional Frontiers, which actually enhances
- 8:46Speaker 1: the body's capability of making more and more and more
- 8:49Speaker 1: GLP-1 on a regular ongoing basis. Yours truly lost almost
- 8:53Speaker 1: 30 pounds by doing that. And I'm going to continue
- 8:57Speaker 1: to do it. ProBio3. Start out with two a day
