- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. Main to cloudy
- 0:06Speaker 1: skies at 730, temperature 8 degrees in Metro. I'm Brian Medore.
- 0:10Speaker 1: A man has been charged with aggravated assault after somebody
- 0:13Speaker 1: was attacked in Stephenville and left with life-threatening injuries. Patrolling
- 0:18Speaker 1: RCMP officers were flagged down just before 9.30 p.m. by
- 0:21Speaker 1: somebody concerned about a disturbance on nearby Holland Crescent. Officers
- 0:26Speaker 1: located a victim who was rushed to hospital. A suspect
- 0:30Speaker 1: identified as 27-year-old Christopher Mooney was arrested at the scene.
- 0:35Speaker 1: He's been charged with aggravated assault and has also been
- 0:39Speaker 1: charged with breaking and entering possession of a weapon for
- 0:41Speaker 1: a dangerous purpose and causing mischief to property following a
- 0:45Speaker 1: separate incident earlier in the day. Mooney has already made
- 0:49Speaker 1: a first court appearance. The unemployment rate in Newfoundland and
- 0:53Speaker 1: Labrador took a hit last month, jumping to over 9%.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It had dropped to 8.6 in August, but it was 9.1
- 1:01Speaker 1: in September. All other jurisdictions have a jobless rate of
- 1:06Speaker 1: under 8%. The metro region enjoys numbers similar to those
- 1:11Speaker 1: of comparable cities in the Maritimes, 6.6%. Halifax is 5.5,
- 1:17Speaker 1: Moncton 7.6. The Premier says he's confident in the future
- 1:22Speaker 1: of Bay de Nord with Shell's new 30% stake in
- 1:24Speaker 1: the project. BP pulled out of Bay de Nord in July,
- 1:30Speaker 1: leaving Norway-based Equinor as the sole investor in the deepwater field. Shell,
- 1:36Speaker 1: a new entry to the Newfoundland offshore, has since stepped in.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Tony Wakeham believes Shell's involvement bodes well for the project.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Absolutely. I think that's a very positive reflection on just that,
- 1:48Speaker 2: that this project is drawing attention around the world. and
- 1:53Speaker 2: you're seeing interest from major players in our offshore oil
- 1:56Speaker 2: and gas that haven't been here before, and that's reflected
- 2:00Speaker 2: in the number of conferences that I've attended, and certainly,
- 2:04Speaker 2: as I said, I think there's a renewed interest.
- 2:08Speaker 1: City of Cornerbrook has decided to allow a dead fin
- 2:11Speaker 1: whale to decompose naturally after it washed ashore in Wild Cove.
- 2:16Speaker 1: While doing so, it expects it'll continue to gain even
- 2:19Speaker 1: more attention from the public. VOCM's Linda Swain has that story.
- 2:23Speaker 3: The decision was made to leave the carcass where it
- 2:25Speaker 3: is following consultation with various provincial and federal government agencies.
- 2:30Speaker 3: The animal, the second largest species in the world next
- 2:33Speaker 3: to the blue whale, became grounded at Wild Cove a
- 2:35Speaker 3: couple of weeks ago after apparently chasing bait into the
- 2:38Speaker 3: shallow water. It perished on October 2nd. The city says
- 2:42Speaker 3: while a number of options have been explored, it was
- 2:44Speaker 3: decided that they were impractical and carried a high risk
- 2:47Speaker 3: of environmental damage. The city is asking residents to be
- 2:50Speaker 3: cautious if approaching the carcass and those driving on the
- 2:54Speaker 3: North Shore Highway are being asked to be mindful of
- 2:56Speaker 3: the speed limit and not to impede traffic while parked
- 2:59Speaker 3: on the side of the road.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Up next, your weather forecast.
