- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. An innovative medical transportation aircraft produced by
- 0:10Speaker 2: Evis Air will be on display at a major aviation
- 0:13Speaker 2: show in Las Vegas later this month. The Metamax 1900D
- 0:17Speaker 2: was developed by the company around the Beechcraft 1900D platform.
- 0:21Speaker 2: CEO Ian White says they've taken what was originally designed
- 0:25Speaker 2: to be a passenger airliner and modified it to accommodate
- 0:28Speaker 2: a dual stretcher system and a bariatric stretcher system, which
- 0:32Speaker 2: is made for larger and heavier people.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Traditionally, medevac aircraft have been kind of small and not
- 0:39Speaker 1: able to... Moving to larger patients has been a struggle
- 0:42Speaker 1: in the past. We found this aircraft has been uniquely
- 0:47Speaker 1: situated for that mission. And some of the platforms that
- 0:50Speaker 1: we've sent out across Canada have been recruited for service
- 0:55Speaker 1: to South America, all over North America and parts of
- 0:58Speaker 1: South America and the Caribbean to bring back these bariatric
- 1:02Speaker 1: patients because... The access to other aircraft is so limited.
- 1:06Speaker 2: White says people have been blown away by how spacious
- 1:10Speaker 2: the aircraft is.
- 1:11Speaker 1: We're fielding calls all over North America, New Zealand, Australia.
- 1:16Speaker 1: We have agreements now in New Zealand as well. So
- 1:20Speaker 1: there's agents in New Zealand that are marketing this aircraft.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And believe it or not, we didn't go looking for them.
- 1:24Speaker 1: They found a video of us on YouTube and they
- 1:27Speaker 1: reached out to us.
- 1:28Speaker 2: A journalist who delved into the world of chips, VLTs,
- 1:32Speaker 2: and casinos is warning that gambling is becoming an epidemic
- 1:36Speaker 2: in Canada. Rob Chernick, the author of A Losing Hand,
- 1:40Speaker 2: examined the various jurisdictions across Canada for a book, including
- 1:44Speaker 2: Newfoundland and Labrador. He says stronger public awareness is needed
- 1:48Speaker 2: to reduce the human cost. Recent evidence in Ontario shows
- 1:52Speaker 2: a trend of related emergency room visits, self-harm risk, and
- 1:56Speaker 2: acute harms among younger men. But not all provinces have
- 1:59Speaker 2: that data, Newfoundland and Labrador being one of them.
- 2:02Speaker 3: When we legalize and we expand gambling, there's always a risk.
- 2:07Speaker 3: And so you have to say to yourself, is it
- 2:09Speaker 3: worth that risk? And if you don't know the numbers
- 2:13Speaker 3: like this, you don't know if it's worth the risk.
- 2:15Speaker 3: And I think it's important to note that Newfoundland and
- 2:18Speaker 3: Labrador is the only province without a physical casino.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Chernick says getting information from this province was not easy.
- 2:25Speaker 3: And for a long time, the line was they were
- 2:28Speaker 3: not going to open an ALC online casino. And then
- 2:30Speaker 3: they did quite quietly. And when I asked the government why,
- 2:35Speaker 3: they kind of tiptoed around it. So I think it's
- 2:37Speaker 3: just important to know that This expansion keeps happening and
- 2:41Speaker 3: people aren't necessarily looking at this data and making decisions
- 2:45Speaker 3: based on that.
- 2:46Speaker 2: An iconic local restaurant is celebrating three quarters of a
- 2:50Speaker 2: century since serving its first plates of fish and chips
- 2:52Speaker 2: to the public. Chess's Fish and Chips first opened its
- 2:56Speaker 2: doors on October 29, 1951 with a snack bar on
- 2:59Speaker 2: Harvey Road in St. John's. A native of Newtown Bonavista Bay,
- 3:03Speaker 2: Chess Barber started it all by steaming out of the
- 3:06Speaker 2: narrows each morning to catch enough fish to get him
- 3:08Speaker 2: through the day and return in time to serve his
- 3:10Speaker 2: hungry dinnertime customers. Along with his wife Betty, that little
- 3:14Speaker 2: snack bar soon grew with the flagship store on Freshwater
- 3:17Speaker 2: Road opening in 1958. It remains in operation today. Barber
- 3:23Speaker 2: passed away in 1991 at the age of 62, and
- 3:26Speaker 2: the business that still bears his name is celebrating 75
- 3:30Speaker 2: years in operation. The family-run business has since grown to
- 3:34Speaker 2: three restaurants in St. John's, one in Mount Pearl, and
- 3:37Speaker 2: one in Bay Roberts. People may notice a number of
- 3:41Speaker 2: emergency responders at St. John's International Airport tomorrow, but it'll
- 3:46Speaker 2: all be part of a training exercise. The event, held
- 3:49Speaker 2: every two years, helps to ensure the airport and its
- 3:52Speaker 2: partners are ready to respond in an emergency. The exercise
- 3:56Speaker 2: takes place between 7 and 11 o'clock tomorrow morning. Airport
- 4:00Speaker 2: operations will not be affected. Up next, your BOCM weather forecast.
