- 0:00Speaker 1: The way to the Kingdom. The Kingdom of God is
- 0:05Speaker 1: at hand. Repent ye and believe the Gospel, Mark chapter one,
- 0:11Speaker 1: verse fifteen. These words naturally lead us to consider first
- 0:16Speaker 1: the nature of true religion here termed by our Lord
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Kingdom of God, which saith he is at hand,
- 0:24Speaker 1: and secondly the way thereto, which he points out in
- 0:27Speaker 1: those words repent ye and believe the Gospel. We are
- 0:31Speaker 1: first to consider the nature of true religion here termed
- 0:35Speaker 1: by our Lord the Kingdom of God, the same expression
- 0:39Speaker 1: the Great Apostle uses in his Epistle to the Romans,
- 0:42Speaker 1: where he likewise explains his Lord's words, saying, the Kingdom
- 0:46Speaker 1: of God is not meet and drink, but righteousness and
- 0:50Speaker 1: peace and joy in the Holy Ghost Romans fourteen, verse seventeen.
- 0:56Speaker 1: The Kingdom of God, or true religion is not meet
- 0:58Speaker 1: and drink. Is well known that not only the unconverted Jews,
- 1:03Speaker 1: but great numbers of those who had received the faith
- 1:05Speaker 1: of Christ were notwithstanding zealous of the Law Acts twenty one,
- 1:10Speaker 1: verse twenty, even the ceremonial Law of Moses whatsoever. Therefore,
- 1:15Speaker 1: they found written therein either concerning meat and drink offerings
- 1:19Speaker 1: or the distinction between clean and unclean meats. They not
- 1:23Speaker 1: only observed themselves, but vehemently pressed the same, even on
- 1:26Speaker 1: those among the gentiles or heathens who were turned to God, YEA,
- 1:32Speaker 1: to such a degree that some of them taught wheresoever
- 1:35Speaker 1: they came among them. Except ye be circumcised and keep
- 1:39Speaker 1: the law, the whole ritual law, ye cannot be saved
- 1:44Speaker 1: Acts fifteen, Verses one and twenty four. In opposition to these,
- 1:49Speaker 1: the Apostle declares, both here and in many other places,
- 1:52Speaker 1: that true religion does not consist in meat and drink,
- 1:56Speaker 1: or in any ritual observances, nor indeed in any outward
- 1:59Speaker 1: things whatever, in anything exterior to the heart, the whole
- 2:03Speaker 1: substance thereof lying in righteousness, peace, and joy, in the
- 2:06Speaker 1: Holy Ghost, not in any outward thing, such as forms
- 2:11Speaker 1: or ceremonies, even of the most excellent kind, supposing these
- 2:16Speaker 1: to be ever so decent and significant, ever so expressive
- 2:19Speaker 1: of inward things, supposing them ever so helpful, not only
- 2:24Speaker 1: to the vulgar, whose thought reaches little farther than their sight,
- 2:28Speaker 1: but even to men of understanding, men of strong capacities,
- 2:31Speaker 1: as doubtless they may sometimes be, YEA, supposing them as
- 2:36Speaker 1: in the case of the Jews, to be appointed by
- 2:38Speaker 1: God himself. Yet even during the period of time wherein
- 2:42Speaker 1: that appointment remains in force, true religion does not principally
- 2:45Speaker 1: consist therein, nay, strictly speaking, not at all. How much
- 2:50Speaker 1: more must this hold concerning such rights and forms as
- 2:54Speaker 1: are only of human appointment. The religion of Christ rises
- 2:58Speaker 1: infinitely higher and lies immensely deeper than all these. These
- 3:04Speaker 1: are good in their place, just so far as they
- 3:07Speaker 1: are in fact subservient to true religion. And it were
- 3:11Speaker 1: a superstition to object against them while they are applied
- 3:14Speaker 1: only as occasional helps to human weakness. But let no
- 3:19Speaker 1: man carry them farther, Let no man dream that they
- 3:23Speaker 1: have any intrinsic worth, or that religion cannot subsist without them.
- 3:28Speaker 1: This were to make them an abomination to the Lord.
- 3:31Speaker 1: The nature of religion is so far from consisting in
- 3:34Speaker 1: these in forms of worship or rites and ceremonies, that
- 3:38Speaker 1: it does not properly consist in any outward actions of
- 3:41Speaker 1: what kind soever. It is true a man cannot have
- 3:44Speaker 1: any religion who is guilty of vicious immoral actions, or
- 3:49Speaker 1: who does to others what he would not they should
- 3:51Speaker 1: do to him if he were in the same circumstance.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And it is also true that he can have no
- 3:57Speaker 1: real religion. Who knows to do good and doth it not.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yet may a man both abstain from outward evil and
- 4:05Speaker 1: do good and still have no religion. Yea two persons
- 4:09Speaker 1: may do the same outward work, suppose feeding the hungry
- 4:13Speaker 1: or clothing the naked, And in the meantime, one of
- 4:16Speaker 1: these may be truly religious, and the other have no
- 4:19Speaker 1: religion at all, For the one may act from the
- 4:22Speaker 1: love of God, and the other from the love of praise.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So manifest it is that although true religion naturally leads
- 4:30Speaker 1: to every good work and work, yet the real nature
- 4:33Speaker 1: thereof lies deeper still, even in the hidden man of
- 4:37Speaker 1: the heart. I say of the heart. For neither does
- 4:42Speaker 1: religion consist orthodoxy or right opinions, which, although they are
- 4:46Speaker 1: not properly outward things, are not in the heart, but
- 4:49Speaker 1: the understanding. A man may be orthodox in every point.
- 4:53Speaker 1: He may not only espouse right opinions, but zealously defend
- 4:57Speaker 1: them against all opposers. He may think us concerning the
- 5:01Speaker 1: incarnation of our Lord, concerning the ever Blessed Trinity, and
- 5:05Speaker 1: every other doctrine contained in the oracles of God. He
- 5:08Speaker 1: may assent to all the three creeds that called the Apostles,
- 5:12Speaker 1: the Nicene, and the Athenasian. And yet it is possible
- 5:17Speaker 1: he may have no religion at all, no more than
- 5:20Speaker 1: a Jew, Turk or pagan. He may be almost as
- 5:24Speaker 1: orthodox as the devil, though indeed not altogether, for every
- 5:28Speaker 1: man errs in something whereas we can't well conceive him
- 5:32Speaker 1: to hold any erroneous opinion, and may all the while
- 5:36Speaker 1: be as great a stranger as he to the religion
- 5:39Speaker 1: of the heart. This alone is religion, truly so called.
- 5:44Speaker 1: This alone is in the sight of God of great price.
- 5:48Speaker 1: The Apostle sums it all up in three particulars, righteousness
- 5:52Speaker 1: and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost, and first righteousness.
- 5:57Speaker 1: We cannot be at a loss concerning them if we
- 6:00Speaker 1: remember the words of our Lord describing the two grand
- 6:03Speaker 1: branches thereof on which hang all the law and the prophets.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and with all thy mind, and with all thy soul,
- 6:12Speaker 1: and with all thy strength. This is the first and
- 6:15Speaker 1: great commandment. Mark Chapter twelve. Verse thirty. The first and
- 6:20Speaker 1: great branch of Christian righteousness. Thou shalt delight thyself in
- 6:24Speaker 1: the Lord, thy God. Thou shalt seek and find all
- 6:27Speaker 1: happiness in Him. He shall be thy shield and thy
- 6:30Speaker 1: exceeding great reward in time and in eternity. All thy
- 6:35Speaker 1: bones shall say, Whom have I in heaven but THEE?
- 6:38Speaker 1: And there is none upon earth that I desire Beside Thee.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Thou shalt hear and fulfill his word. Who saith my
- 6:45Speaker 1: son give me thy heart, and having given him thy
- 6:48Speaker 1: heart thy inmost soul, to reign there without arrival, Thou
- 6:54Speaker 1: mayst well cry out in the fullness of thy heart.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I will love THEE, O Lord my strength. The Lord
- 7:01Speaker 1: is my strong rock and my defense, my Savior, my God,
- 7:05Speaker 1: and my might in whom I will trust my buckler,
- 7:09Speaker 1: the horn also of my salvation and my refuge. And
- 7:13Speaker 1: the second commandment is like unto this. The second great
- 7:16Speaker 1: branch of Christian righteousness is closely and inseparably connected therewith
- 7:21Speaker 1: even Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Thou shalt love,
- 7:27Speaker 1: Thou shalt embrace with the most tender good will, the
- 7:30Speaker 1: most earnest and cordial affection, the most inflamed desires of
- 7:34Speaker 1: preventing or removing all evil, and of procuring for him
- 7:38Speaker 1: every possible good, thy neighbor, that is, not only thy friend,
- 7:43Speaker 1: thy kinsman, or thy acquaintance, not only the virtuous, the
- 7:47Speaker 1: friendly him that loves thee that prevents or returns thy kindness,
- 7:51Speaker 1: but every child of man, every human creature, every soul
- 7:54Speaker 1: which God hath made, Not accepting him whom thou never
- 7:58Speaker 1: hast seen in the flesh, whom thou knowest, not either
- 8:02Speaker 1: by face or name, Not accepting him whom thou knowest
- 8:05Speaker 1: to be evil and unthankful, Him that still, despitefully uses
- 8:09Speaker 1: and persecutes thee Him, thou shalt love as thyself, with
- 8:14Speaker 1: the same and variable thirst after his happiness in every kind,
- 8:18Speaker 1: the same unwearied care to screen him from whatever might
- 8:23Speaker 1: grieve or hurt either his soul or body. Now is
- 8:27Speaker 1: not this love the fulfilling of the law, the sum
- 8:30Speaker 1: of all Christian righteousness, of all inward righteousness, For it
- 8:35Speaker 1: necessarily implies bowels of mercy, humbleness of mind. Seeing love
- 8:40Speaker 1: is not puffed up gentleness, meekness, long suffering, For love
- 8:45Speaker 1: is not provoked, but believeth, hopeth, endureth all things, and
- 8:49Speaker 1: of all outward righteousness. For love worketh no evil to
- 8:53Speaker 1: his neighbor, either by word or deed. It cannot willingly
- 8:57Speaker 1: hurt or grieve anyone. And it is zealous of good works.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Every lover of mankind, as he hath opportunity, doth good
- 9:05Speaker 1: unto all men, being without partiality and without hypocrisy, full
- 9:10Speaker 1: of mercy and good fruits. But true religion, or a
- 9:14Speaker 1: heart right toward God and Man, implies happiness as well
- 9:18Speaker 1: as holiness, for it is not only righteousness, but also
- 9:21Speaker 1: peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. What peace the
- 9:25Speaker 1: peace of God, which God only can give and the
- 9:28Speaker 1: world cannot take away, The peace which passeth all understanding,
- 9:33Speaker 1: all barely rational conception, being a supernatural sensation, a divine
- 9:38Speaker 1: taste of the powers of the world to come, such
- 9:42Speaker 1: as the natural man knoweth not, how why soever, in
- 9:46Speaker 1: the things of this world, nor indeed can he know
- 9:48Speaker 1: it in his present state, because it is spiritually discerned.
- 9:53Speaker 1: It is a peace that banishes all doubt, all painful uncertainty,
- 9:58Speaker 1: the spirit of God bearing witness with the spe spirit
- 10:00Speaker 1: of a Christian that he is a child of God.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And it banishes fear, all such fear as hath torment,
- 10:08Speaker 1: the fear of the wrath of God, the fear of hell,
- 10:10Speaker 1: the fear of the devil, and in particular the fear
- 10:13Speaker 1: of death. He that hath the peace of God, desiring
- 10:17Speaker 1: if it were the will of God, to depart and
- 10:20Speaker 1: to be with Christ. With this peace of God. Wherever
- 10:24Speaker 1: it is fixed in the soul, there is also joy
- 10:26Speaker 1: in the Holy Ghost, joy wrought in the heart by
- 10:29Speaker 1: the Holy Ghost, by the ever blessed Spirit of God.
- 10:33Speaker 1: He it is that worketh in us, that calm, humble
- 10:36Speaker 1: rejoicing in God through Christ Jesus, by whom we have
- 10:40Speaker 1: now received the Atonement Catalagan, the reconciliation with God, and
- 10:46Speaker 1: that enables us boldly to confirm the truth of the
- 10:49Speaker 1: Royal Psalmist's declaration. Blessed is the man, or rather happy,
- 10:54Speaker 1: whose unrighteousness is forgiven and whose sin is covered. He
- 10:59Speaker 1: it is that in inspires the Christian soul with that
- 11:01Speaker 1: even solid joy which arises from the testimony of the
- 11:05Speaker 1: Spirit that he is a child of God, and that
- 11:08Speaker 1: gives him to rejoice with joy unspeakable in hope of
- 11:11Speaker 1: the glory of God. Hope, both of the glorious image
- 11:14Speaker 1: of God, which is in part and shall be fully
- 11:17Speaker 1: revealed in Him, and of that crown of Glory which
- 11:20Speaker 1: fadeth not away, reserved in Heaven for him. This holiness
- 11:25Speaker 1: and happiness joined in one are sometimes styled in the
- 11:28Speaker 1: inspired writings the Kingdom of God as by Our Lord
- 11:32Speaker 1: in the text, and sometimes the Kingdom of Heaven. It
- 11:36Speaker 1: is termed the Kingdom of God because it is the
- 11:38Speaker 1: immediate fruit of God's reigning in the soul. So soon
- 11:42Speaker 1: as ever He takes unto himself his mighty power and
- 11:45Speaker 1: sets up his throne in our hearts, they are instantly
- 11:47Speaker 1: filled with this righteousness and peace and joy in the
- 11:51Speaker 1: Holy ghost. It is called the Kingdom of Heaven because
- 11:54Speaker 1: it is in a degree Heaven opened in the soul.
- 11:59Speaker 1: For whosoever they are are that experience this, they can
- 12:02Speaker 1: ever before angels and men, everlasting life is one glory
- 12:06Speaker 1: is on earth begun according to the constant tenor of scripture,
- 12:11Speaker 1: which everywhere bears record, God hath given unto us eternal life,
- 12:16Speaker 1: And this life is in his son, He that hath
- 12:19Speaker 1: the Son reigning in his heart, hath life, even life everlasting.
- 12:25Speaker 1: First John five, verses eleven and twelve. For this is
- 12:30Speaker 1: life eternal, to know THEE, the only true God, in
- 12:33Speaker 1: Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent John seventeen, verse three.
- 12:38Speaker 1: And they to whom this is given may confidently address God,
- 12:42Speaker 1: though they were in the midst of a fiery furnace.
- 12:45Speaker 1: The Lord safe shielded by Thy power, thee Son of
- 12:50Speaker 1: God Jehovah, we adore in form of man descending to
- 12:55Speaker 1: appear to thee be ceaseless. Hallelujahs given praise as in
- 13:00Speaker 1: heaven thy throne we offer here, for where Thy presence
- 13:04Speaker 1: is displayed is heaven, and this Kingdom of God or
- 13:09Speaker 1: of Heaven, is at hand. As these words were originally spoken,
- 13:13Speaker 1: they implied that the time was then fulfilled God being
- 13:18Speaker 1: made manifest in the flesh, when he would set up
- 13:20Speaker 1: his kingdom among men and reign in the hearts of
- 13:23Speaker 1: his people. It is not the time now fulfilled. For
- 13:27Speaker 1: lo saith, he I am with you always, you who
- 13:30Speaker 1: preach remission of sins in My name, even under the
- 13:33Speaker 1: end of the world. Matthew twenty eight, verse twenty Wheersoever,
- 13:37Speaker 1: therefore the Gospel of Christ is preached this his Kingdom
- 13:41Speaker 1: is nigh at hand. It is not far from every
- 13:44Speaker 1: one of you. Ye may this hour enter therein too.
- 13:48Speaker 1: If so be ye hearken to his voice. Repent ye
- 13:51Speaker 1: and believe the Gospel. This is the way. Walk ye
- 13:55Speaker 1: in it, and first repent, that is, know yourselves. This
- 14:00Speaker 1: is the first repentance, previous to faith, even conviction or
- 14:04Speaker 1: self knowledge. Awake, then thou that sleepest, know thyself to
- 14:09Speaker 1: be a sinner in what manner of sinner thou art
- 14:12Speaker 1: know that corruption of thy inmost nature, whereby thou art
- 14:16Speaker 1: very far gone from original righteousness, whereby the flesh lusteth
- 14:21Speaker 1: always contrary to the spirit, through that carnal mind which
- 14:25Speaker 1: is enmity against God, which is not subject to the
- 14:28Speaker 1: law of God. Neither in deed can be know that
- 14:31Speaker 1: thou art corrupted in every power, in every faculty of
- 14:35Speaker 1: thy soul, that thou art totally corrupted in every one
- 14:38Speaker 1: of these, all the foundations being out of course, the
- 14:42Speaker 1: eyes of thine understanding are darkened, so that they cannot
- 14:45Speaker 1: discern God or the things of God. The clouds of
- 14:49Speaker 1: ignorance and error rest upon thee and cover THEE with
- 14:52Speaker 1: the shadow of death. Thou knowest nothing Yet as thou
- 14:55Speaker 1: oughtest to know, neither God nor the world, nor thyself,
- 15:00Speaker 1: thy will is no longer the will of God, but
- 15:02Speaker 1: is utterly perverse and distorted, a verse from all good,
- 15:06Speaker 1: from all which God loves, and prone to all evil,
- 15:10Speaker 1: to every abomination which God hateth. Thy affections are alienated
- 15:15Speaker 1: from God and scattered abroad over all the earth. All
- 15:19Speaker 1: thy passions, both thy desires and aversions, thy joys and sorrows,
- 15:23Speaker 1: thy hopes and fears, are out of frame, are either
- 15:26Speaker 1: undue in their degree, or placed on undue objects, so
- 15:30Speaker 1: that there is no soundness in thy soul. But from
- 15:34Speaker 1: the crown of the head to the soul of the foot,
- 15:36Speaker 1: to use the strong expression of the prophet, there are
- 15:39Speaker 1: only wounds and bruises and putrefying sores. Such is the
- 15:44Speaker 1: inbred corruption of the heart of thy very inmost nature.
- 15:48Speaker 1: And what manner of branches canst thou expect to grow
- 15:51Speaker 1: from such an evil root? Hence springs unbelief. Ever, departing
- 15:56Speaker 1: from the living God saying who is the Lord? That
- 15:59Speaker 1: I should serve him? Tush thou God carest not for it?
- 16:04Speaker 1: Hence independence affecting to be like the most high hence
- 16:08Speaker 1: pride in all its forms, teaching THEE to say, I
- 16:12Speaker 1: am rich and increased in goods, and have need of nothing.
- 16:15Speaker 1: From this evil fountain flow forth the bitter streams of vanity,
- 16:20Speaker 1: thirst of praise, ambition, coveteousness, the lust of the flesh,
- 16:24Speaker 1: the lust of the eye, and the pride of life.
- 16:27Speaker 1: From this arise anger, hatred, malice, revenge, envy, jealousy, evil surmisings.
- 16:32Speaker 1: From this all the foolish and hurtful lusts that now
- 16:35Speaker 1: pierce THEE through with many sorrows, and if not timely prevented,
- 16:39Speaker 1: will at length drown thy soul in everlasting perdition. And
- 16:44Speaker 1: what fruits can grow on such branches as these, only
- 16:47Speaker 1: such as are bitter and evil, Continually of pride, cometh, contention, vain, boasting,
- 16:53Speaker 1: seeking and receiving praise of men, and so robbing God
- 16:56Speaker 1: of that glory which he cannot give unto another. Of
- 16:59Speaker 1: the lust of the flesh, come gluttony or drunkenness, luxury
- 17:03Speaker 1: or sensuality, fornication, uncleanness, variously defiling that body which was
- 17:08Speaker 1: designed for a temple of the Holy Ghost, of unbelief,
- 17:11Speaker 1: of every evil word and work. But the time would fail,
- 17:16Speaker 1: shouldst thou reckon up all all the idle words that
- 17:19Speaker 1: thou hast spoken, provoking the most high grieving the Holy
- 17:22Speaker 1: One of Israel, all the evil works thou hast done,
- 17:25Speaker 1: either wholly evil in themselves, or at least not done
- 17:29Speaker 1: to the glory of God. For thy actual sins are
- 17:33Speaker 1: more than thou art able to express, more than the
- 17:36Speaker 1: hairs of thy head. Who can number the sands of
- 17:39Speaker 1: the sea, or the drops of rain, or thy iniquities.
- 17:44Speaker 1: And knowest thou not that the wages of sin is death, death,
- 17:48Speaker 1: not only temporal, but eternal. The soul that sinneth, it
- 17:52Speaker 1: shall die. For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it,
- 17:56Speaker 1: it shall die, the second death. This is the sentence
- 17:59Speaker 1: to be punished with never ending death, with everlasting destruction,
- 18:03Speaker 1: from the presence of the Lord and from the glory
- 18:05Speaker 1: of his power. Knowest thou not that every sinner innakos
- 18:10Speaker 1: estai ase ten ginan two pyrus not properly is in
- 18:16Speaker 1: danger of hell fire, is far too weak, but rather
- 18:19Speaker 1: is under the sentence of hell fire, doomed, already just
- 18:22Speaker 1: dragging to execution. Thou art guilty of everlasting death. It
- 18:28Speaker 1: is the just reward of thy inward and outward wickedness.
- 18:32Speaker 1: It is just that the sentence should now take place.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Dost thou see, dost thou feel this? Art Thou thoroughly
- 18:39Speaker 1: convinced that thou deservest God's wrath and everlasting damnation. Would
- 18:44Speaker 1: God do THEE no wrong if He now commanded the
- 18:47Speaker 1: earth to open and swallow THEE up, If thou wert
- 18:51Speaker 1: now to go down quick into the pit, into the
- 18:54Speaker 1: fire that never shall be quenched. If God hath given
- 18:58Speaker 1: THEE truly to repent, Thou hast a deep sense that
- 19:01Speaker 1: these things are so, and that it is of His
- 19:05Speaker 1: mere mercy. Thou art not consumed swept away from the
- 19:09Speaker 1: face of the earth. And what wilt thou do to
- 19:12Speaker 1: appease the wrath of God to atone for all thy sins,
- 19:16Speaker 1: and to escape the punishment that thou hast so justly deserved?
- 19:20Speaker 1: Alas thou canst do nothing, nothing that will in any
- 19:24Speaker 1: wise make amends to God for one evil work or
- 19:27Speaker 1: word or thought. If thou couldst now do all things well,
- 19:32Speaker 1: If from this very hour till thy soul should return
- 19:35Speaker 1: to God, thou couldst perform perfect, uninterrupted obedience, even this
- 19:40Speaker 1: would not atone for what is past. The not increasing
- 19:44Speaker 1: thy debt would not discharge it. It would still remain
- 19:48Speaker 1: as great as ever yea, the present and future obedience
- 19:51Speaker 1: of all the men upon earth and all the angels
- 19:54Speaker 1: in heaven would never make satisfaction to the justice of
- 19:58Speaker 1: God for one's single sin. How vain, then was the
- 20:01Speaker 1: thought of atoning for thy own sins by anything thou
- 20:05Speaker 1: couldst do. It costeth far more to redeem one's soul
- 20:09Speaker 1: than all mankind is able to pay. So that were
- 20:13Speaker 1: there no other help for a guilty sinner, without doubt,
- 20:16Speaker 1: he must have perished everlastingly. But suppose perfect obedience for
- 20:21Speaker 1: the time to come could atone for the sins that
- 20:23Speaker 1: are past. This would profit thee nothing, for thou art
- 20:27Speaker 1: not able to perform it, No, not in any one point.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Begin now make the trial shake off that outward sin
- 20:36Speaker 1: that so easily besetteth THEE. Thou canst not, How then,
- 20:40Speaker 1: wilt thou change thy life from all evil to all good? Indeed,
- 20:45Speaker 1: it is impossible to be done unless first thy heart
- 20:48Speaker 1: be changed. For so long as the tree remains evil,
- 20:52Speaker 1: it cannot bring forth good fruit. But art thou able
- 20:55Speaker 1: to change thy own heart, from all sin to all holiness,
- 20:58Speaker 1: to quicken a soul that is dead and sin, dead
- 21:01Speaker 1: to God and alive only to the world, no more
- 21:05Speaker 1: than thou art able to quicken a dead body, to
- 21:08Speaker 1: raise to life him that lieth in the grave. Yea
- 21:10Speaker 1: thou art not able to quicken thy soul in any degree,
- 21:14Speaker 1: no more than to give any degree of life to
- 21:16Speaker 1: the dead body. Thou canst do nothing more or less
- 21:21Speaker 1: in this matter. Thou art utterly without strength to be
- 21:25Speaker 1: deeply sensible of this, how helpless thou art, as well
- 21:28Speaker 1: as how guilty and how sinful this is that repentance
- 21:32Speaker 1: not to be repented of which is the forerunner of
- 21:35Speaker 1: the Kingdom of God. If to this lively conviction of
- 21:39Speaker 1: thy inward and outward sins, of thy utter guiltiness and helplessness,
- 21:43Speaker 1: there be added suitable affections sorrow of the heart for
- 21:47Speaker 1: having despised thy own mercies, remorse and self condemnation, having
- 21:52Speaker 1: thy mouth stopped, shame to lift up thine eyes to heaven,
- 21:56Speaker 1: fear of the wrath of God abiding on thee of
- 21:58Speaker 1: His curse hanging over thy head, and of the fiery
- 22:01Speaker 1: indignation ready to devour those who forget God and obey
- 22:05Speaker 1: not our Lord Jesus Christ, earnest desire to escape from
- 22:10Speaker 1: that indignation, to cease from evil and learn to do well.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Then I say unto thee in the name of the Lord,
- 22:17Speaker 1: thou art not far from the Kingdom of God one
- 22:21Speaker 1: step more, and thou shalt enter in thou dost repent.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Now believe the Gospel, the gospel that is good tidings,
- 22:31Speaker 1: good news for guilty helpless sinners. In the largest sense
- 22:35Speaker 1: of the word means the whole revelation made to men
- 22:38Speaker 1: by Jesus Christ, and sometimes the whole account of what
- 22:41Speaker 1: our Lord did and suffered while he tabernacled among men.
- 22:45Speaker 1: The substance of all is Jesus Christ came into the
- 22:48Speaker 1: world to save sinners. Or God so loved the world
- 22:51Speaker 1: that he gave his only begotten son to the end
- 22:54Speaker 1: we might not perish, but have everlasting life. Or he
- 22:58Speaker 1: was bruised for our transgressions, He was wounded for our iniquities.
- 23:01Speaker 1: The chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with
- 23:03Speaker 1: his stripes we are healed. Believe this, and the Kingdom
- 23:09Speaker 1: of God is thine. By faith, Thou attainest the promise
- 23:12Speaker 1: He pardoneth and absolveth all that truly repent and unfeignedly
- 23:17Speaker 1: believe His Holy Gospel. As soon as ever God hath
- 23:20Speaker 1: spoken to thy heart, be of good cheer. Thy sins
- 23:24Speaker 1: are forgiven thee his Kingdom comes. Thou hast righteousness and
- 23:28Speaker 1: peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. Only beware thou
- 23:33Speaker 1: do not deceive thy own soul. With regard to the
- 23:36Speaker 1: nature of this faith, it is not, as some have
- 23:39Speaker 1: fondly conceive, a bare assent to the truth of the Bible,
- 23:43Speaker 1: of the articles of our creed, or of all that
- 23:45Speaker 1: is contained in the Old and New Testament. The devils
- 23:48Speaker 1: believe this as well as I or thou, and yet
- 23:52Speaker 1: they are devil still. But it is over and above
- 23:55Speaker 1: this a sure trust in the mercy of God through
- 23:58Speaker 1: Jesus Christ. It is a confidence in a pardoning God.
- 24:03Speaker 1: It is a divine evidence or conviction that God was
- 24:06Speaker 1: in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not imputing to
- 24:10Speaker 1: them their former trespasses. And in particular that the Son
- 24:13Speaker 1: of God hath loved me and given himself for me,
- 24:17Speaker 1: and that I even I am now reconciled to God
- 24:20Speaker 1: by the blood of the Cross. Dost thou thus believe,
- 24:24Speaker 1: then the peace of God is in thy heart, and
- 24:27Speaker 1: sorrow and sighing flee away. Thou art no longer in
- 24:30Speaker 1: doubt of the love of God. It is clear as
- 24:33Speaker 1: the noonday sun. Thou criest out my song shall be
- 24:36Speaker 1: always of the loving kindness of the Lord. With my
- 24:39Speaker 1: mouth will I ever be telling of Thy truth from
- 24:42Speaker 1: one generation to another. Thou art no longer afraid of
- 24:46Speaker 1: hell or death, or him that had once the power
- 24:49Speaker 1: of death the devil, no nor painfully afraid of God himself,
- 24:54Speaker 1: Only that thou hast a tender, filile fear of offending him.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Dost thou believe, then thy soul doth magnify the Lord
- 25:04Speaker 1: and the spirit rejoiceth in God, thy Savior. Thou rejoicest
- 25:08Speaker 1: in that thou hast redemption through His blood, even the
- 25:12Speaker 1: forgiveness of sins. Thou rejoicest in that spirit of adoption
- 25:16Speaker 1: which crieth in thy heart. Abbah Father, Thou rejoicest in
- 25:21Speaker 1: a hope full of immortality, in reaching forth unto the
- 25:25Speaker 1: mark of the prize of Thy high calling, in an
- 25:28Speaker 1: earnest expectation of all the good things which God hath
- 25:31Speaker 1: prepared for them that love him. Dost thou now believe,
- 25:35Speaker 1: then the love of God is now shed abroad in
- 25:38Speaker 1: thy heart. Thou lovest Him, because He first loved us,
- 25:42Speaker 1: And because thou lovest God, thou lovest thy brother also,
- 25:46Speaker 1: And being filled with love, peace, joy, thou art also
- 25:50Speaker 1: filled with long suffering, gentleness, fidelity, goodness, meekness, temperance, and
- 25:56Speaker 1: all the other fruits of the same spirit. In a word,
- 26:00Speaker 1: with whatever dispositions are holy, are heavenly or divine. For
- 26:05Speaker 1: while thou beholdest with open, uncovered face, the veil now
- 26:09Speaker 1: being taken away, the glory of the Lord, his glorious love,
- 26:12Speaker 1: and the glorious image wherein thou hast created, thou art
- 26:16Speaker 1: changed into the same image, from glory to glory by
- 26:19Speaker 1: the spirit of the Lord. This repentance, this faith, this peace,
- 26:24Speaker 1: joy love, this change from glory to glory, is what
- 26:27Speaker 1: the wisdom of the world has voted to be madness,
- 26:30Speaker 1: mere enthusiasm, utter distraction. But thou, o man of God,
- 26:35Speaker 1: regard them. Not be thou moved by none of these things.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Thou knowest in whom thou hast believed. See that no
- 26:42Speaker 1: man take thy crown, whereunto thou hast already attained. Hold
- 26:47Speaker 1: fast and follow till thou attain all the great and
- 26:50Speaker 1: precious promises. And thou who hast not yet known him.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Let not vain men make THEE ashamed of the Gospel
- 26:58Speaker 1: of Christ. Be th in nothing, terrified by those who
- 27:02Speaker 1: speak evil of the things which they know not. Of
- 27:05Speaker 1: God will soon turn thy heaviness into joy. O. Let
- 27:09Speaker 1: not thy hands hang down yet a little longer, and
- 27:12Speaker 1: He will take away thy fears and give THEE the
- 27:16Speaker 1: spirit of a sound mind. He is nigh that justifieth,
- 27:20Speaker 1: who is he that condemneth It is Christ that died,
- 27:24Speaker 1: yea rather that rose again, who is even now at
- 27:27Speaker 1: the right hand of God making intercession for THEE. Now
- 27:31Speaker 1: cast thyself on the lamb of God with all thy sins,
- 27:34Speaker 1: how many soever they be, And an entrance shall now
- 27:38Speaker 1: be ministered unto THEE into the Kingdom of our Lord
- 27:41Speaker 1: and Savior, Jesus Christ. End of Section seven.
