- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hey team, welcome to the show. Today in this episode, we are
- 0:26going to dive into something that we all experience but
- 0:29rarely talk about openly, and that is jealousy and comparison.
- 0:34Jealousy and comparison sneak into our lives all the time,
- 0:37whether we're scrolling through social media or watching our
- 0:41colleagues rise up and succeed, or maybe even just seeing
- 0:45friends hit milestones that we've been dreaming about.
- 0:48This can even happen within partnerships and marriages.
- 0:52And here's the truth. Jealousy and comparison.
- 0:55They're not just bad habits that we need to fix.
- 0:58They're actually powerful signals in my mind because they
- 1:02reveal 2 things. They reveal a fear that we hold
- 1:06something that is deep inside of us, a fear that we've been not
- 1:10wanting to look at, and then also a desire that we hide
- 1:15something that is hidden from our view.
- 1:17So let's get into that a little bit.
- 1:20When you feel jealous of someone, what's really
- 1:23happening? Because it's not just about
- 1:25them, it's also about you. Jealousy is like a mirror.
- 1:30It shows you something that you want, but deep down you don't
- 1:33fully believe you can have. You fear that you're not good
- 1:38enough, or you're not capable or not worthy or that it's too late
- 1:41for you or you're too old to do something.
- 1:45I remember dealing with a lot of jealousy in comparison when I
- 1:48was younger. I think most teenagers deal with
- 1:51this, and I remember one of the things that always really got me
- 1:54into my comparison was around spring break time.
- 1:57We grew up in a pretty wealthy town, and most families would go
- 2:01vacation during spring break. They'd go to places like Hawaii
- 2:04and Palm Springs and, you know, lots of cool places.
- 2:08My family didn't have the money to do that.
- 2:10And so we would often hang around town or maybe we'd go to
- 2:14the coast for a couple of days, but it was raining at the coast
- 2:18in the spring, and it just wasn't as cool.
- 2:20Everyone would come back with their tans and their, you know,
- 2:23their cool tropical vacation stories.
- 2:25And that jealousy and that comparison was so real at the
- 2:28time, but looking back now, I can see that it was also
- 2:32illuminating a fear of mine. The jealousy wasn't just about
- 2:36the vacation. It was fear of being left
- 2:38behind. It was fear of missing out.
- 2:41It was fear of maybe not ever having the money to be able to
- 2:44take trips like that. And this is true of most things.
- 2:48The jealousy isn't about their vacation or their relationship
- 2:51or their career move. It's about your fear.
- 2:55And it's the fear of being left behind.
- 2:57Its fear of missing out on your potential.
- 2:59It's of not measuring up. And that sting you feel when you
- 3:03compare yourself, that's fear saying to you, what if that will
- 3:09never be mine? But here's the flip side.
- 3:12Comparison can also point to your hidden desires.
- 3:16So it points to the fears that you have deep inside.
- 3:19But it can also point to hidden desires.
- 3:23Because if you didn't want that thing, if you didn't have a
- 3:26desire for it, you wouldn't feel jealous.
- 3:29You don't envy things that don't matter to you.
- 3:32You might admire a famous opera singer, but unless you secretly
- 3:36dream of being on stage singing opera, you won't compare
- 3:40yourself to them. So when jealousy shows up, it's
- 3:44actually illuminating your desire.
- 3:47Maybe it's freedom, maybe it's love, maybe it's impact or
- 3:51influence or financial security. That's a big one.
- 3:54The problem is we often bury these desires.
- 3:58It's strange, but I see so many people do this.
- 4:01We get really weird about our desires.
- 4:03We have shame about them, about wanting things.
- 4:07Or we get embarrassed about having desires, or we get afraid
- 4:11and we talk ourselves out of them.
- 4:12Before we even start, we'll say things like, oh, that's
- 4:15unrealistic. I could never do that.
- 4:18I'm too late or too old or too unqualified.
- 4:22And so instead of owning the desire, we push it down and it
- 4:26shows up later in a twisted form as jealousy.
- 4:30So what if instead of beating yourself up for comparing, you
- 4:34saw your jealousy in comparison as a compass?
- 4:37What if it was a signal to you that there was something for you
- 4:40to uncover and look at? Any time you feel jealousy, you
- 4:43can imagine that it's actually highlighting something that you
- 4:47want in your life. That Co worker who got promoted,
- 4:51that's your desire for growth and recognition.
- 4:54That friend who ran a marathon, that's your desire for strength
- 4:59and commitment and proving to yourself that you can do hard
- 5:01things. When you can identify the true
- 5:04desire, it's exciting because then you can take action on it
- 5:08and you can sit in that energy and be inspired and appreciative
- 5:12and enthusiastic instead of being in fear and scarcity and
- 5:16lack. And that's the difference.
- 5:18You take the fears, you take the jealousies, you take the
- 5:21comparisons, and you make them productive.
- 5:25When you can see these things in this way, it transforms the
- 5:29shame into strategy. Instead of spiraling into why
- 5:32not me? You can ask what's this showing
- 5:35me about what I really want? Here's a few things that you can
- 5:40do to use jealousy in comparison as fuel instead of poison.
- 5:44The first thing that you can do is name the fear.
- 5:46Always believe in naming things because as soon as you name
- 5:49them, you start to get distance from that power that they hold
- 5:52over you. So the first thing, name the
- 5:54fear. Ask yourself, what am I afraid
- 5:57of? If I admit that I want this?
- 5:59Is it fear of failing or fear of judgement?
- 6:01Am I fear of being disappointed again?
- 6:03When you name that fear, it takes away its power.
- 6:07The second thing you can do is to own the desire.
- 6:10You know, I love radical ownership.
- 6:11So when we think about this, we'd say, OK, instead of
- 6:14pretending that I don't care, admit it.
- 6:18Yes, I want that kind of relationship.
- 6:21Yes, I want that financial freedom.
- 6:24Yes, I want that opportunity. I want to stand on a stage and
- 6:28lead. Owning it is step one to
- 6:31creating it. The third thing you can do is
- 6:34use it as a guide, because comparison will show you what's
- 6:37possible. If they can have it, it means it
- 6:40exists in the universe and that means it's available.
- 6:43And the question isn't why them, the question is how can I?
- 6:49The fourth thing to do is to take baby steps.
- 6:52You don't need to leap overnight.
- 6:55Just take one intentional aligned action that moves you
- 6:58towards that desire every single day.
- 7:01Whatever the desire is that that jealousy revealed.
- 7:05I remember my coach said to me, you don't have to be afraid of
- 7:08taking baby steps. Baby steps are actually the way
- 7:11that everyone does it. It's very rarely one huge leap.
- 7:15And that reminded me that all we have to do is show up every day
- 7:18and take that one little action. That's the way that you can
- 7:21rewrite the fear and turn it into progress.
- 7:25So here's my challenge to you this week.
- 7:27Be aware of the next time that jealousy creeps in, just pause
- 7:31with it. Hang out with it for a little
- 7:32bit. Don't run away.
- 7:34Don't shame yourself for feeling it.
- 7:36Just lean in and ask yourself what fear is this jealousy or
- 7:41comparison exposing? And what desire is it pointing
- 7:45to and revealing? Because when you stop seeing
- 7:48jealousy as a flaw and start seeing it as feedback, it
- 7:51becomes a very powerful tool. It's not there to keep you
- 7:54stuck. It's there to wake you up to the
- 7:56life that you really want to live.
- 7:59And that's a very cool thing. So I hope this helps, Team,
- 8:03remember, your fear is just your desire in disguise.
- 8:07Don't bury it. Don't run from it.
- 8:09Use it. Thank you for being here and for
- 8:12listening. And as always, team, thank you
- 8:14for being ready to Impact. Thanks for listening to Impact
