Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Yoga as Applied Psychology to Understand and Address the Complexity Inherent in the Evolution of Consciousness

- 0:01The evolution of Consciousness involves an increasing level of
- 0:05complexity as successive levels of consciousness are layered and
- 0:11then interact with each other with each layer attempting to
- 0:15not only express its own native way of seeing and acting, but
- 0:20also needing to accommodate the demands and different
- 0:24considerations of the other levels.
- 0:28Thus we may think of something with the mind, but when we try
- 0:32to express it in the body or the vital level of our being, we
- 0:36find that it does not translate exactly as conceived are vital.
- 0:41Being is able to infiltrate the mental process and bias the
- 0:46mines actions to justify its desires.
- 0:50And we also can see that when the vital interacts with the
- 0:53physical body, it can lead to strain and injury.
- 0:57If the body is unable to manage the intensity of the effort
- 1:00called for or the force deployed, Things become even
- 1:06more complex. When we realize that the mind,
- 1:09the vital, and the physical are not unified within themselves,
- 1:15but also have different drives directions habits needs And
- 1:20predilections that make each evolutionary stage complex in
- 1:26and of itself. For those who seek Liberation
- 1:31from the external life, who seek spiritual realization through
- 1:35one pointed focus on the absolute.
- 1:39These issues may, but not necessarily do have very little
- 1:43relevance, as they can simply withdraw.
- 1:47Avoid the issues to a great degree and Escape what they
- 1:51believe to be the illusory nature of the life in the world.
- 1:56It is, of course, not absolutely true.
- 1:59Simply because achieving such a one pointed focus without
- 2:04dealing with the distractions caused by the body, the Life
- 2:08Energy and the mind is not as simple of feet as some may
- 2:12assume. For those, however, who
- 2:15recognize the omnipresent reality of the universal
- 2:19manifestation, and who accept the need for unification with
- 2:23the wider purpose and implementation of the
- 2:27significance of that manifestation, it is clear that
- 2:32there is no way to Simply cut the knot of the problem, rather.
- 2:37Each element needs to be carefully untied and redirected.
- 2:43This leads to the enormous task of Applied psychology, the tree
- 2:48aurobindo and the mother have described.
- 2:52SRI aurobindo writes, quote, the practice of yoga brings us face
- 2:58to face with the extraordinary complexity of our own, being the
- 3:02stimulating, but also embarrassing multiplicity of our
- 3:05personality. The rich endless confusion of
- 3:10nature to the ordinary man who lives upon his own waking
- 3:14surface, ignorant or the self depths, and vastness has behind
- 3:18the veil, his psychological This is fairly simple, a small but
- 3:24clamorous company of desires, some imperative, intellectual
- 3:29and aesthetic Cravings. Some tastes a few ruling or
- 3:34prominent ideas amid a great current of unconnected or ill
- 3:38connected, and mostly trivial thoughts, a number of more or
- 3:43less imperative vital needs, alternations of physical health,
- 3:48and disease a scattered. And in consequence, Succession
- 3:53of Joys and griefs. frequent minor, disturbances and
- 3:58vicissitudes and rarer, strong searchings and upheavals of mind
- 4:03or body and through it all nature, partly with the aid of
- 4:08his thought and will partly without or in spite of it,
- 4:13arranging these things in some rough practical fashion, some
- 4:17tolerable disorderly order, this is the material of his
- 4:22existence, the average human being even Even now is in his
- 4:26inward existence as crude and undeveloped as was the bygone
- 4:31primitive man in his outward life.
- 4:34But as soon as we go deep within ourselves, and yoga means a
- 4:39plunge into all the multiple Pro funded, he's of the Soul.
- 4:44We find ourselves suggest subjectively as man in his
- 4:48growth as found himself object of lie.
- 4:51Surrounded by a whole complex World, which we have to know.
- 4:56And to conquer the most disconcerting Discovery is to
- 5:02find that every part of us intellect will sense, mind
- 5:08nervous or desire self, the heart.
- 5:11The body has each as it were its own complex, individuality and
- 5:17natural formation independent of the rest.
- 5:21It neither agrees with itself, nor with the others, nor with
- 5:26the representative ego, which is the shadow cast by some Central
- 5:31and centralizing. Self on our superficial
- 5:34ignorance. We find that we are composed not
- 5:38of one, but many personalities and each has its own demand.
