- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome to jag xam at Kennannie Stevens, Brad Sexton, John
- 0:21Speaker 1: Osier with me.
- 0:21Speaker 2: We're coming to you from the Grove.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hotel outside Watford in England, north of London. We've got
- 0:26Speaker 1: a little English tea settled here for you today, John,
- 0:29Speaker 1: you brought your own cup though. All right, let's think
- 0:34Speaker 1: it's a big thing. You got some stuff to talk about.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Team obviously going to be here for the week. They're
- 0:38Speaker 1: preparing to take on the Patriots at Winboro Stadium on Sunday.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Start up with big Thing number one, which is on
- 0:43Speaker 1: the move. Overnight trade news coming down as Roy Robertson
- 0:46Speaker 1: Harris headed to Seattle, a pretty long flight heading from
- 0:49Speaker 1: London all the way to Seattle for future draft picks
- 0:52Speaker 1: for this team. Brian A bit of a surprise to
- 0:55Speaker 1: maybe be doing this in the middle of London week,
- 0:57Speaker 1: but then again, when you're one in five, not much
- 0:58Speaker 1: of a surprise about anything.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I'm not surprised because Trent Balkey and I had a
- 1:02Speaker 3: conversation back during training camp and he wanted to see
- 1:05Speaker 3: Mason Smith on the field. He wanted to see young
- 1:07Speaker 3: players in the lineup, and Mason's played better the last
- 1:11Speaker 3: couple of weeks and Roy has been okay. And I
- 1:15Speaker 3: got the distinct impression, you know, from that last night,
- 1:19Speaker 3: that that's Trent saying it's time to move on and
- 1:21Speaker 3: get young guys in the lineup, not you know, flushing
- 1:24Speaker 3: the season and saying we can't turn this thing around
- 1:26Speaker 3: and win some games, but just deciding I'm gonna win
- 1:29Speaker 3: with Mason Smith over the long haul more than I'm
- 1:31Speaker 3: going to win with Roy Robertson Harris.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Yeah. And if you remember, Roy played a lot in
- 1:37Speaker 4: the fourth quarter of preseason games, which is usually a
- 1:40Speaker 4: sign that they're trying to figure out something on those lines. Look,
- 1:44Speaker 4: he as a second free agent, meaning he signed as
- 1:48Speaker 4: a free agent for another team. He was on his
- 1:50Speaker 4: second contract here, gave this team what two or three
- 1:54Speaker 4: solid years twenty twenty one. They got out from under
- 1:57Speaker 4: the rest of the contract. So you know, it's I've
- 2:00Speaker 4: got a lot of emails in the day or so
- 2:02Speaker 4: since it happened. Is this a fire sale? You know, Look,
- 2:05Speaker 4: if you continue to be one and whatever, Yeah, at
- 2:08Speaker 4: some point you started looking at those things, But I
- 2:10Speaker 4: don't think it'll make It has to be a trend
- 2:12Speaker 4: where all of a sudden everybody's out the door right now.
- 2:14Speaker 3: No, just one memory on Roy as he goes out
- 2:17Speaker 3: the door. He had a couple of big tackles at
- 2:19Speaker 3: the end of that Chargers playoff game in twenty twenty
- 2:21Speaker 3: two that set up the punt that got the ball
- 2:23Speaker 3: back to the Jaguars were just over two minutes to
- 2:26Speaker 3: play for that game winning field goal drive. So you know,
- 2:29Speaker 3: he wasn't a superstar. He's not a Pride of the
- 2:31Speaker 3: Jaguars kind of guy. But he made a couple of
- 2:33Speaker 3: plays in a very important game, and for that I'm
- 2:36Speaker 3: grateful for that.
- 2:37Speaker 1: We'll talk a little bit about what that means for
- 2:39Speaker 1: the defense coming up a little bit later on in
- 2:40Speaker 1: the show, but we do want to talk second big thing,
- 2:44Speaker 1: roster versus team John. We've talked about this roster coming
- 2:48Speaker 1: into the season. We felt like individuals spots on the
- 2:50Speaker 1: roster were good and solid. But this team isn't playing
- 2:54Speaker 1: well right now. So what's the dynamics of that. When
- 2:56Speaker 1: we look at maybe positions and feel like things are okay,
- 2:59Speaker 1: but then the team isn't really working out.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Well, I kind of wonder. Frankly, I think it's a
- 3:04Speaker 4: good roster. I think there are good players on the roster.
- 3:09Speaker 4: What they haven't shown this year is are there enough
- 3:13Speaker 4: elite players that make big plays and key situations. I
- 3:16Speaker 4: think there's a lot of guys who are NFL starters.
- 3:19Speaker 4: I don't know or they haven't shown that there are
- 3:22Speaker 4: guys who make huge plays at the end of games.
- 3:25Speaker 4: I think Brian Thomas Junior is trending that way. I
- 3:27Speaker 4: think Trevor Lawrence can be that. I think Josh Allen,
- 3:30Speaker 4: Trayvon Walker are those guys at times. Do they have
- 3:35Speaker 4: enough great players on the roster to be better than this?
- 3:39Speaker 4: Right now? They don't because they're not better than this.
- 3:42Speaker 4: But you know, if you're asking specific spots that can
- 3:45Speaker 4: be better, clearly this secondary can be better. It has
- 3:47Speaker 4: been very good yet this year, but it's also been
- 3:49Speaker 4: beat up. I think you sort of knew that was
- 3:52Speaker 4: a concern going in, Brian. I've said since day one,
- 3:54Speaker 4: you know where I'm going with it. When there's a
- 3:56Speaker 4: secondary that's questionable, the front has to be huge. And
- 4:01Speaker 4: how many times I said during the preseason, if this
- 4:04Speaker 4: team is going to be great defensively, the front must
- 4:07Speaker 4: be great defensively. If it's not, it's not gonna be
- 4:10Speaker 4: very good defensively, I'm not sure the entire front has
- 4:14Speaker 4: been good enough yet.
- 4:15Speaker 3: No, it hasn't been as good in the middle, right,
- 4:17Speaker 3: I mean, which is why they feel comfortable in saying,
- 4:18Speaker 3: all right, well, let's take a six round pick for
- 4:20Speaker 3: Roy Robertson Harris and move Mason Smith. By the way,
- 4:22Speaker 3: Jordan Jefferson made a couple of big plays.
- 4:25Speaker 2: In the ball game.
- 4:25Speaker 3: He as saying the big meaning, you know, he moved
- 4:28Speaker 3: guys physically from one gap to another in the running
- 4:31Speaker 3: game and it was impressive to watch. So there's some
- 4:34Speaker 3: young talent that they think they can get more from.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Get more from John is kind of where I'm at
- 4:39Speaker 3: right now. I think it's a good roster too. Is
- 4:42Speaker 3: it the best roster that the Jaguars have ever had? No,
- 4:44Speaker 3: it's clearly not. If it was, it wouldn't be one
- 4:46Speaker 3: and five. But they can get more from this roster.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I had a long conversation with Bucky Brooks in the
- 4:53Speaker 3: post game after the post game at Tottenham the other day,
- 4:56Speaker 3: and you know, his enduring thought was, they've got a
- 5:00Speaker 3: whittle it down to what they can do what they
- 5:02Speaker 3: do well, and not try to think about how you
- 5:05Speaker 3: can build on things until you get back to being
- 5:07Speaker 3: productive and effective with what you do well. And that's
- 5:10Speaker 3: both sides of the ball, right, whether it's the the
- 5:13Speaker 3: underneath stuff that worked so well against the Colts and
- 5:16Speaker 3: getting back to that, or whether it's not rotating as
- 5:19Speaker 3: much on the defensive side and keeping guys on the
- 5:23Speaker 3: field more. Because that rotation has been a storyline so
- 5:27Speaker 3: far through the first six games of the season. It's
- 5:29Speaker 3: about getting more from the roster from this point forward.
- 5:33Speaker 4: I want to catch the balls too.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I did mention that the other day.
- 5:37Speaker 4: I mean it's a thought, clearly. I mean, approach is
- 5:41Speaker 4: one thing, just making plays when they're there, which seems
- 5:44Speaker 4: like a refrain. We've gone over and over this year
- 5:48Speaker 4: as an us to make the darn play well.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And I want to be clear on this. Getting more
- 5:51Speaker 3: from the roster isn't just on the coach is simplifying, right,
- 5:54Speaker 3: It's guys getting the most out of their talent, catching
- 5:57Speaker 3: the ball, making the tackle and.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Making silly mistakes when you do make it exactly. Our
- 6:02Speaker 1: final big thing today is going to be about streaks.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Streaky this team has been, especially under Doug Peterson, started
- 6:08Speaker 1: poorly in twenty twenty two, ended well, started well, last year,
- 6:13Speaker 1: ended poorly, started poorly here. This team tends to when
- 6:17Speaker 1: they're good, they're good, and when they're not doing well,
- 6:19Speaker 1: they slide. How Brian, do you work around that and
- 6:23Speaker 1: try to get yourself out of this so this doesn't
- 6:25Speaker 1: turn into another multi game thing.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I think it's important to point out because we both
- 6:29Speaker 3: just said that the roster is a pretty good roster.
- 6:32Speaker 3: There isn't any reason why they can't turn it on
- 6:35Speaker 3: on Sunday. And I get it. The Patriots have a
- 6:36Speaker 3: rookie quarterback, they've lost five straight games, they've got a
- 6:39Speaker 3: brand new coach. So if the Jaguars come out and
- 6:42Speaker 3: put a number on the Patriots on Sunday, people and go, well, yeah,
- 6:45Speaker 3: they beat the Patriots. But there isn't any reason why
- 6:48Speaker 3: they can't create some momentum here, start playing good football,
- 6:51Speaker 3: which they haven't yet this year, and try to turn
- 6:53Speaker 3: that side a bit around. I mean, what's a strong finish?
- 6:57Speaker 3: I mean they started strong last year and then it
- 6:59Speaker 3: just went on hill and it's started at the bottom
- 7:01Speaker 3: of the hill and it's gone down a little lower.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Do they have to go eat in three? You probably
- 7:06Speaker 3: have to go eight in three for it to be
- 7:08Speaker 3: a strong.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say eight and three, you still got
- 7:12Speaker 4: to be over five hundred, and eight and three would
- 7:14Speaker 4: get them over five hundred. That seems a distant dream
- 7:17Speaker 4: right now the way they're playing. But think about it.
- 7:19Speaker 4: I was look at this season like this. So far,
- 7:20Speaker 4: you've had two awful games. The rest of them, you've
- 7:24Speaker 4: had a chance. The Houston Texans might be as good
- 7:27Speaker 4: as anything in the league right now save a couple
- 7:29Speaker 4: of teams at the top, and the Jaguar should have
- 7:31Speaker 4: beaten them. So can this team get to that point
- 7:34Speaker 4: where it has a chance at the end of games
- 7:37Speaker 4: against good teams, Yes, clearly it can't. Can they make
- 7:41Speaker 4: those key plays at the end of those games against
- 7:43Speaker 4: good teams? They have to show that. But if they
- 7:46Speaker 4: do it, it's there. But I can't predict that right
- 7:49Speaker 4: now the way they've played. Well, you know, it was
- 7:51Speaker 4: the Cowboys got clobbered at home of what was that
- 7:54Speaker 4: forty seven or nine. I mean, they got beat badly
- 7:56Speaker 4: by the Detroit Lions. And Mike McCarthy came out the
- 7:59Speaker 4: next day and he's been under they're three and three,
- 8:01Speaker 4: and he said, I relish the chance to turn this
- 8:04Speaker 4: thing around.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Well, what else is he supposed to say. I mean,
- 8:07Speaker 3: he's getting mocked in the media about that, but you
- 8:09Speaker 3: know they've got they've got eleven games left to play
- 8:11Speaker 3: as well. I kind of like to see Doug Peterson
- 8:14Speaker 3: or the players step up and kind of say that thing.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Maybe they're they're thinking it, but you make that line
- 8:20Speaker 3: in the sand and go, we can turn this around,
- 8:22Speaker 3: and we want to turn it around, and we're going
- 8:23Speaker 3: to turn it around something along those lines, because at
- 8:27Speaker 3: this point you got to go and prove it. You've
- 8:30Speaker 3: got to go and get it done. And I guarantee
- 8:32Speaker 3: you kuy they believe that they can win Sunday, and
- 8:35Speaker 3: they believe they can win the next Sunday. They they
- 8:38Speaker 3: don't lack in a confidence perspective from their ability to
- 8:42Speaker 3: go out on the field on Sunday and think enough
- 8:44Speaker 3: of themselves to go win.
- 8:45Speaker 4: So I think one nighth difficult for him is when
- 8:48Speaker 4: you've lost ten of twelve. Yeah, I know after games,
- 8:52Speaker 4: if I'm a player, I am a little self conscious
- 8:54Speaker 4: about saying the same thing I said before, which is
- 8:57Speaker 4: that we can get it turned around. So I know
- 9:00Speaker 4: they're feeling that. I kind of get why the players
- 9:04Speaker 4: are hesitant. Even Trevor said the other day, I can't
- 9:08Speaker 4: sit up here and say everything. I'm paraphrasing, but he said,
- 9:10Speaker 4: I can't sit up here and say everything's great or
- 9:12Speaker 4: pound the table because you've heard that before. So there's
- 9:15Speaker 4: a little bit of a hesitancy on that. But I
- 9:17Speaker 4: get the feeling. I do get to feeling, and I'm saying,
- 9:18Speaker 4: you don't have to pound the table, just say we
- 9:20Speaker 4: can turn it around. It starts on Sunday. We got
- 9:22Speaker 4: to turn it around. We believe we can turn it around.
- 9:25Speaker 4: There's not a lot of energy for this team in
- 9:27Speaker 4: the fan base, and nobody was surprised by that. The
- 9:30Speaker 4: way to turn it around is to go win the
- 9:32Speaker 4: next one. Go win the next one. You remember they
- 9:34Speaker 4: lost those five games in a row in twenty twenty
- 9:36Speaker 4: two after starting two and one, and they were all
- 9:40Speaker 4: one score games at the end, and the question was
- 9:42Speaker 4: every week, Doug, what's it going to take for your
- 9:43Speaker 4: team to get over the top. Doug, how do you
- 9:45Speaker 4: win a close game at the end? You know, Doug
- 9:47Speaker 4: what's going on, and he just kept being patient and
- 9:50Speaker 4: patient and patient and knew that at some point they
- 9:53Speaker 4: get it done. And then they did against the Raiders
- 9:55Speaker 4: and things started to go their way. So maybe they
- 9:58Speaker 4: need one of those come from behind games, because I
- 9:59Speaker 4: remember they were down seventeen nothing to the Raiders in
- 10:01Speaker 4: that game. Maybe they need one of these come from
- 10:03Speaker 4: behind to believe enough in themselves to start it. The
- 10:06Speaker 4: cool thing kai the NFL is always nice enough to
- 10:08Speaker 4: give you another opportunity.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Absolutely eleven more. All right, stay with this here on
- 10:13Speaker 1: jackson We're going to talk about what we might see
- 10:15Speaker 1: as far as changes go to the defensive side.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Of the football when we come back.
- 10:23Speaker 1: For eleven years, Dreamfinders' Homes has been proud to call
- 10:25Speaker 1: themselves the official homebuilder of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Visit dreamfinders
- 10:29Speaker 1: homes dot com for all of the available inventory and
- 10:32Speaker 1: go Jags. Welcome back into Jags Weekend, JAG's Weekend. Jags
- 10:38Speaker 1: am here as we're in the UK, I mean a
- 10:42Speaker 1: beautiful library, very much different than our normal setting, but
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'll take it and clearly forgetting what show I'm hosting,
- 10:48Speaker 1: but it is nice to be here and be able
- 10:50Speaker 1: to talk a little bit about what the defense is
- 10:52Speaker 1: going to be doing. We talked about some of the
- 10:54Speaker 1: changes we might see. Obviously they allowed the Bears to
- 10:57Speaker 1: score at thirty five points, so we're gonna see changes regardless.
- 11:00Speaker 1: We have seen Tyson Campbell on the practice field. He's
- 11:02Speaker 1: going to practice this week. His practice window has opened.
- 11:04Speaker 1: We don't know if he will be playing yet, but
- 11:07Speaker 1: that's something to consider, especially with what we've seen from
- 11:09Speaker 1: the secondary. John.
- 11:10Speaker 2: How helpful is it going to mean to get Tyson back?
- 11:12Speaker 4: Well, my vibe is that he'll be back. Doug didn't
- 11:15Speaker 4: say it on Monday, but the way he talked about it,
- 11:17Speaker 4: it sort of felt like he'll be back. Look, he's
- 11:19Speaker 4: your best player in the secondary, or he better be
- 11:23Speaker 4: with the way you paid him, and I think he is.
- 11:26Speaker 4: I don't know that he's a takeaway aside of the
- 11:29Speaker 4: field guy, Brian, but he is a guy who makes
- 11:31Speaker 4: you better at a spot. Certainly he would give you
- 11:34Speaker 4: confidence being back there. Look, I don't think one guy
- 11:38Speaker 4: is going to fix everything, but one guy can raise
- 11:41Speaker 4: your level and then over time, if you get Dewey back,
- 11:44Speaker 4: who is very consistent, Probably not this week, right, I
- 11:47Speaker 4: don't know if he's your best athlete in the secondary,
- 11:51Speaker 4: but he might be your most instinctive player and your
- 11:54Speaker 4: best tackler. So if you can get some guys back,
- 11:57Speaker 4: it'll help. But even with those guys, Frankly, I think
- 12:01Speaker 4: it's still more about the front not having those guys
- 12:05Speaker 4: under as much pressure. But Tyson would improve it. I
- 12:07Speaker 4: don't disagree. The front's got to get it done. However,
- 12:10Speaker 4: you know, they were really happy with the way that
- 12:11Speaker 4: Tyson was playing in the first half in Miami before
- 12:13Speaker 4: he injured that hamstring. And what I think he allows
- 12:16Speaker 4: you to do is to move Ronald Darby into a
- 12:18Speaker 4: different role and get Monteric Brown over on the other
- 12:20Speaker 4: side of the field. Monterrek has earned the right to
- 12:23Speaker 4: think so he's played really, really well, not just in coverage,
- 12:27Speaker 4: but up against the run for one hundred and eighty
- 12:29Speaker 4: five pounds. I mean, that guy throws himself in there
- 12:31Speaker 4: against the run like few cornerbacks you see in the
- 12:34Speaker 4: modern game. And that then allows you to get Darby
- 12:36Speaker 4: some rest. I mean, he's a ten year veteran, get
- 12:39Speaker 4: him into a different role. You got a couple of
- 12:41Speaker 4: other young guys, Trey Prince in particular, that is probably
- 12:44Speaker 4: going to see some time on the field over the
- 12:46Speaker 4: second half of the season. So maybe you get faster
- 12:49Speaker 4: in the second deary and a little bit more athletic.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Hopefully that factors into it as well well. And had
- 12:55Speaker 4: to bring another position into it, Dewey monterre Ventrel Meller.
- 13:02Speaker 4: These guys, you know, just play with energy, right and
- 13:06Speaker 4: it just feels like that group. And Tyson does too,
- 13:10Speaker 4: he's more cornerbacks. Is hard to play with it you
- 13:13Speaker 4: with energy, but those three guys, it just feels like
- 13:16Speaker 4: getting them on the field, you would have a little
- 13:19Speaker 4: bit of an emotional lift for a team looking for
- 13:21Speaker 4: something right now.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Now that being said, because we talk about young guys,
- 13:24Speaker 3: and we've been talking about them a lot, there is
- 13:26Speaker 3: an older guy that you might get this week, right
- 13:29Speaker 3: to Sean Gibson, who can come back this week if
- 13:31Speaker 3: he's cleared by the league, And as of Monday, the
- 13:33Speaker 3: coach still hadn't heard, you know, direct verification from the league.
- 13:37Speaker 3: But you're talking about a ten year veteran who was
- 13:39Speaker 3: in San Francisco last year and was in Chicago before that,
- 13:42Speaker 3: and had spent some time with the Jags, a veteran
- 13:44Speaker 3: guy who could give you a lift perhaps at the
- 13:48Speaker 3: safety position, which was a little better last week but
- 13:50Speaker 3: still not good enough.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Ran When you talk about using Darby in a different role.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Is that just not having him on the field as much.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Do you see him kind of in a different place
- 13:58Speaker 1: in the secondary or how would you do it, because
- 14:01Speaker 1: obviously we saw him struggle against the Bears.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Well, I'd move Monteric over there. The different role would
- 14:05Speaker 3: be he'd be a backup. He'd be a guy who'd
- 14:08Speaker 3: come in, you know, when I need to give a
- 14:09Speaker 3: guy a break, if a guy's got an injury, you know,
- 14:11Speaker 3: he's the break glass in case of emergency, bring the
- 14:13Speaker 3: veteran back out on the field. I just think Monterrek
- 14:16Speaker 3: Brown is a guy who's been rising the last couple
- 14:18Speaker 3: of years, and has been rising since he went into
- 14:20Speaker 3: the lineup. And if Tyson Campbell's your one, I mean,
- 14:23Speaker 3: who's number two to.
- 14:24Speaker 4: You, well, Monteric. My sense is they may make that
- 14:29Speaker 4: transition slowly. I got to feel like the transition's coming.
- 14:34Speaker 4: I don't know if it would be immediate, but I
- 14:37Speaker 4: just can't see him taking that long because Monterics aren't.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Yeah, he's too bad to take Monteric off the field
- 14:41Speaker 2: at this point. I agree.
- 14:43Speaker 1: We talked a little bit about Roy Roberts and Harrison
- 14:45Speaker 1: getting Harris getting traded to Seattle, so that opens up
- 14:49Speaker 1: a spot. We talked a lot about the subbing that
- 14:52Speaker 1: they've done on the defensive side of the football. They
- 14:54Speaker 1: were using Roy at times on the edge as well,
- 14:59Speaker 1: because they're isn't a ton of edge players on this team.
- 15:02Speaker 1: So what do you think, John, are some of the
- 15:05Speaker 1: changes we're gonna be seeing now that they have one
- 15:07Speaker 1: less player there.
- 15:08Speaker 4: That's a good question because it has frankly been sort
- 15:11Speaker 4: of hard to follow and figure out what they're doing
- 15:13Speaker 4: upfront because they don't have very many defensive ends. So
- 15:16Speaker 4: Trayvon and Josh, I've got to think, and I get
- 15:21Speaker 4: the want to rotate those guys. Got to think those
- 15:24Speaker 4: guys need to be on the field more. At that point.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Eric Armstead is the other guy in the rotation. You'll
- 15:30Speaker 4: move somebody out, but I don't want to be like
- 15:34Speaker 4: a cute about it. But I'm not sure who does
- 15:36Speaker 4: go out now, because Roy Robinson Harris was one of
- 15:38Speaker 4: those four guys out there, Miles Cole will come up.
- 15:41Speaker 4: You need a big dose to that. So I think
- 15:44Speaker 4: it's Armstead, Cole and the two stalwarts and inside Brian.
- 15:52Speaker 4: It's been a lot of guys but not a lot
- 15:55Speaker 4: of guys who've distinguished themselves yet, so they're gonna get
- 15:58Speaker 4: more of an opportunity.
- 15:58Speaker 3: But two guys that fly both in the last couple
- 16:01Speaker 3: of weeks, in particular last week Jordan Jefferson Sure and
- 16:04Speaker 3: Mason Smith, and it's time. It is time and listen.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Jordan Jefferson's a really big, strong guy and he was
- 16:10Speaker 3: moving people when you see that. If you're Ryan Nielsen,
- 16:14Speaker 3: you want more of that. He's young, you know he
- 16:17Speaker 3: can play more snaps, So you get him in there.
- 16:20Speaker 3: You've got to Devon Hamilton. Mason Smith will be in
- 16:23Speaker 3: there and listen. Maybe I'm the only guy. I'm not
- 16:26Speaker 3: the only guy that thinks that Eric Armstead should take
- 16:29Speaker 3: some snaps inside as well. He was a Pro Bowl
- 16:31Speaker 3: caliber interior pass rusher in a three technique in San Francisco,
- 16:35Speaker 3: and what we've heard is he came here to play
- 16:37Speaker 3: in but you just don't see the same explosion, the
- 16:42Speaker 3: same quick twitch from Eric Armstead kai at end that
- 16:46Speaker 3: you see from forty one and forty four, but interior,
- 16:50Speaker 3: with his length and his strength, I would think he
- 16:52Speaker 3: would be able to give you some snaps in there too.
- 16:55Speaker 4: I couldn't agree more I sort of wonder with the numbers,
- 17:00Speaker 4: who you play out there.
- 17:01Speaker 3: If he will play out there. I mean, he looks
- 17:04Speaker 3: like it's six, So be interesting to see how that
- 17:08Speaker 3: plays out. Let's put it that way for me.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Unless Trayvon or Josh asks off the field, I would
- 17:12Speaker 1: want them at this point on the field.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I want them on.
- 17:15Speaker 4: It's not entirely unusual. Let's clarify. For that position to
- 17:17Speaker 4: do that, it rotates some. They rotate a little more
- 17:22Speaker 4: than I've seen before. You have to rotate a little
- 17:26Speaker 4: bit on the defensive line because you're past rushing and
- 17:28Speaker 4: it takes a lot out of you. So you're not
- 17:29Speaker 4: going to see one hundred percent snaps out of those guys.
- 17:32Speaker 4: To me, what's interesting is there's an opportunity now in
- 17:36Speaker 4: the middle of the defense because nobody's really distinguished themselves there.
- 17:40Speaker 4: There's more of an opportunity than I thought there would
- 17:42Speaker 4: be for Mason Smith and Jordan Jefferson to shine this year.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit about just the offenside of
- 17:49Speaker 1: the football. We heard Travis Etn dealing with an injury
- 17:51Speaker 1: now himself, so week to week is how Doug Peterson
- 17:54Speaker 1: described it on Monday, so he may be missing some time.
- 17:57Speaker 1: With what we've seen from Tank. We've been talking about
- 17:59Speaker 1: get Tank more carries, but I noticed that they've been
- 18:03Speaker 1: using Dearnest a lot specifically. Still when we talk about
- 18:06Speaker 1: Tank in pass coverage. You know whether he can handle that.
- 18:10Speaker 1: He hasn't been trusted with it a lot in the past,
- 18:12Speaker 1: and I noticed in this game they really went leaned
- 18:15Speaker 1: towards Dearnest, especially late when they had to throw the football.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Is that trust still there? Because we talk about the
- 18:20Speaker 1: trust and it's fine when you're winning, but then sometimes
- 18:23Speaker 1: with games like this, and he also fumbled the ball
- 18:25Speaker 1: in this game, is it still there?
- 18:28Speaker 3: I would say that they did not trust him as
- 18:31Speaker 3: much as they trusted Dearnest that much. It's clear you
- 18:34Speaker 3: can say that how much they trust him. We'll have
- 18:37Speaker 3: to hear from Doug and Press this week. But he's
- 18:39Speaker 3: going to have to be on the field. I mean,
- 18:40Speaker 3: he he's a playmaker. The last couple of weeks he's
- 18:42Speaker 3: made some plays. You need to try to replicate that.
- 18:45Speaker 3: And Dearnest is dependable and can make some plays, but
- 18:50Speaker 3: he's he's not Tank bigspeople, so and you don't really
- 18:53Speaker 3: have a throw.
- 18:53Speaker 4: He's very reliable in pass protection as a pass receiver.
- 18:58Speaker 4: That's not Tank's strengths. So they're trying give them credit
- 19:01Speaker 4: for trying to get the best players on the field
- 19:04Speaker 4: for a given situation, and that clearly still is not
- 19:09Speaker 4: yet Tank in terms of being I'm gonna use the
- 19:14Speaker 4: old terminology a third down back. You know, when you
- 19:17Speaker 4: look at Tank, you really don't think, hey, this is
- 19:19Speaker 4: a guy that we need to be on the field
- 19:21Speaker 4: on third and seven a lot. It'd be better on
- 19:25Speaker 4: second and three when you have the option given in
- 19:27Speaker 4: the ball. So he if Travis is out for very long,
- 19:32Speaker 4: he's gonna need to play that role. But it doesn't
- 19:35Speaker 4: feel like they're that comfortable with him in that yet,
- 19:37Speaker 4: and they can do some things to help. But Breton
- 19:39Speaker 4: Strange has emerged as a really good blocking tight end.
- 19:44Speaker 4: They can do some things with him in terms of
- 19:46Speaker 4: protection schemes and finding ways to help the quarterback as well.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Stay with us here on Jagsam. Coming up, we'll talk
- 19:52Speaker 1: a little bit about what's been going on around the division.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Seafield's first Tracksonville's premier luxury auto group. Go to Fieldsauto
- 20:06Speaker 1: dot Com. Welcome back into here. Two Jags Am. We
- 20:09Speaker 1: are just northwest of London as we're here for the
- 20:11Speaker 1: week as team prepares for their game at Wembley Stadium
- 20:14Speaker 1: against the Patriots. We got a little bit of a
- 20:17Speaker 1: preview of what we may see this week because the
- 20:19Speaker 1: Patriots quarterback Drake May, drafted this year, started his first
- 20:22Speaker 1: game for the team, played against the Texans this week
- 20:25Speaker 1: and this will be this second week in a row
- 20:27Speaker 1: we're gonna see a rooie quarterback. Hopefully it fairs a
- 20:28Speaker 1: little bit better than the first time around.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Through three touchdown passes last week so for the game
- 20:32Speaker 3: was out of control. But for the Patriots fans who
- 20:35Speaker 3: hung around, they got to see the new era in
- 20:37Speaker 3: full swing, right, new coach, new quarterback.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Yeah, they like where he's headed. He's making his second start.
- 20:43Speaker 4: I think the clarification here is that the Patriots, by
- 20:47Speaker 4: any measure as a franchise right now, are not where
- 20:50Speaker 4: the Bears are. The Bears felt like they were an
- 20:52Speaker 4: ascending team, believe during the season that they were adding
- 20:56Speaker 4: a rookie quarterback to a already a certainty. The Patriots
- 21:03Speaker 4: very much have a plan for Drake May, and they
- 21:07Speaker 4: realize that they are a team that is in the
- 21:09Speaker 4: first year of a build. So I think Jared Mayo
- 21:13Speaker 4: said this week as a matter of fact, look, this
- 21:16Speaker 4: is not an immediate fix. I'm paraphrasing him, but he
- 21:22Speaker 4: made clear that there's a long way to go in
- 21:24Speaker 4: their build. Yeah.
- 21:25Speaker 1: The way they've been going about the process as well,
- 21:27Speaker 1: choosing not to start him right out of the gate
- 21:29Speaker 1: to kind of get him used to things. Their offensive
- 21:32Speaker 1: line has more issues than what we've been dealing with,
- 21:36Speaker 1: which is impressive at times, and so there will be
- 21:39Speaker 1: opportunity there. Obviously we know their record it shows as well,
- 21:44Speaker 1: but just a lot of injury for that team.
- 21:46Speaker 3: And Jacoby Brissett through two touchdown passes in the first
- 21:49Speaker 3: five games, and then may comes in and throws three.
- 21:51Speaker 3: So right away, they're telling you with this kid.
- 21:54Speaker 2: And they have receivers.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I spoke with Mike Rice this week
- 21:58Speaker 4: of ESPN, who's as good as on the Patriots as anybody.
- 22:04Speaker 4: They fooled some people, he thought by winning their first
- 22:07Speaker 4: game and the expectations win. They wayne wins very much.
- 22:11Speaker 4: They're's going to be a bill. They won their first game,
- 22:13Speaker 4: right said, Oh, it might be further along. He said,
- 22:16Speaker 4: they're not further on than that. This season for the
- 22:19Speaker 4: Patriots is about let's see where Drake may is at
- 22:22Speaker 4: the end of the year, and if he's good, if
- 22:25Speaker 4: they know he's as sending, then they feel like it's
- 22:27Speaker 4: a good year. That's not an unusual situation for a bill,
- 22:30Speaker 4: but that's where the Patriots are.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Elsewhere in the AFC South, we see the Colts got
- 22:35Speaker 1: to win over the Titans as Anthony Richards is still
- 22:39Speaker 1: not back atty I think he was the emergency third
- 22:41Speaker 1: string quarterback, but still going with Joe Flacco at this point,
- 22:44Speaker 1: they're at three and three, the Titans struggling at one
- 22:47Speaker 1: in five, and we've seen I did want to mention
- 22:50Speaker 1: our old friend Calvin Ridley not happy with the quarterback
- 22:55Speaker 1: situation over there, which I mean we saw is he
- 22:59Speaker 1: got frustrated at times here as well, but he's definitely
- 23:03Speaker 1: frustrated in Nashville at this point.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Well when he signed with the Titans, I mean, Levice
- 23:07Speaker 3: is this big armed quarterback, but he's very inaccurate. And
- 23:11Speaker 3: then of course you compound that with Calvin, who didn't
- 23:14Speaker 3: really run precise routes. I thought that was going to
- 23:16Speaker 3: be a match made in discord from the very beginning.
- 23:20Speaker 3: But he took the money right. He wanted the money,
- 23:22Speaker 3: he got it. They were willing to design him at
- 23:24Speaker 3: Jacksonville and give Hm an opportunity to work with a
- 23:26Speaker 3: more proficient quarterback, and he took the money over it.
- 23:29Speaker 3: So Calvin, you get what you signed for.
- 23:32Speaker 2: I did enjoy it, though it was It was interesting.
- 23:37Speaker 4: It'll be fun, it'll be interesting to watch.
- 23:39Speaker 1: It was interesting because the Titans fans had a lot
- 23:40Speaker 1: to say about it when it was happening in Jacksonville.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Now that it's over there, it's it's not a thing anymore.
- 23:46Speaker 4: And a word on the Colts. The Colts have to
- 23:49Speaker 4: me done an impressive job early in the season when
- 23:54Speaker 4: things have been tricky and rocky, they have managed to
- 23:58Speaker 4: keep themselves a full three and three. They feel like
- 24:04Speaker 4: they're having the kind of season that I wish the
- 24:07Speaker 4: Jaguars had had so far. Mean, he's been rocky. If
- 24:10Speaker 4: the Jaguars could have gotten a couple, then they're three
- 24:12Speaker 4: and three and you feel like you're so kind of
- 24:14Speaker 4: hanging on. The Colts have been able to do that,
- 24:16Speaker 4: so as a result, they're still alive. I'm not sure
- 24:18Speaker 4: how great the Colts are, but they have managed to
- 24:21Speaker 4: keep themselves in a position where now if they get
- 24:23Speaker 4: on a run, they're okay for this franchise. You know,
- 24:28Speaker 4: at one to five, I think the Jaggons are capable
- 24:29Speaker 4: of a run. Yeah, but the whole early on you
- 24:33Speaker 4: gotta do what the Colts have done, which is sort
- 24:34Speaker 4: of hang on and scrape and be in position when
- 24:38Speaker 4: you do put it together. And that's what's too bad
- 24:39Speaker 4: about this thing.
- 24:40Speaker 3: That grit. I mean, they just they they put themselves
- 24:43Speaker 3: in a position. And they've got a couple of players.
- 24:45Speaker 3: I mean, Jonathan Taylor's a home run shitter when he's healthy.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Unfortunately for Hima has been healthy, and I think Michael
- 24:51Speaker 3: Pittman's a good receiver. I think the Downs kid has
- 24:53Speaker 3: the potential to be really good. And then of course,
- 24:55Speaker 3: if they can get a couple of guys back on
- 24:57Speaker 3: their defensive front, if they could just hang around Apps,
- 25:00Speaker 3: they'll be in the mix. When it's all said and done.
- 25:02Speaker 3: The Jaguars have to climb, Yeah, they really have to climb,
- 25:05Speaker 3: and it's got to be a much more dramatic. But
- 25:08Speaker 3: when we talk about that's a great example, John, when
- 25:11Speaker 3: we talk about, you know, toughness, toughness for a team
- 25:14Speaker 3: that's been assured as they are. Here's three and three.
- 25:16Speaker 3: That's really to you.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Right away to win at the end, and yeah, nobody
- 25:19Speaker 4: cares if you played bad or not.
- 25:20Speaker 1: No find a way say with here on Jagsamon will
- 25:23Speaker 1: be right back to tell you exactly what we have
- 25:25Speaker 1: going on the rest of the week. Jags fans, do
- 25:33Speaker 1: you want customized Jaguars furniture for your home? Check out
- 25:35Speaker 1: zipchair dot com for all the customer misable options. Zip
- 25:39Speaker 1: chair is furniture for fans.
- 25:43Speaker 4: Hey, you gotta crush the Flogget on them, bro, everybody,
- 25:47Speaker 4: everybody mean not the cue me not in a que
- 25:51Speaker 4: timbo tibo tembo. I will quit, Oh I will, I will.
- 26:07Speaker 1: That's on you.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Stay to yother, baby, stay to yother.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Strayvon Walker miked up in that game against the Bears
- 26:16Speaker 1: trying to corral Caleb Williams.
- 26:18Speaker 3: That was gonna be a great play.
- 26:19Speaker 2: It was gonna be a great play. That's just in
- 26:22Speaker 2: my mind. It will always be a great play.
- 26:24Speaker 1: We just unfortunately didn't get the end result we wanted.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I do want to take a moment because we celebrated
- 26:28Speaker 1: our one hundredth episode last week I did say we
- 26:31Speaker 1: were gonna give away some prizes, and we have now
- 26:34Speaker 1: our winner of that trivia question, which was how many
- 26:37Speaker 1: players have a one hundred yard rushing game in franchise history?
- 26:42Speaker 1: Jeremiah for six four? The correct answer is seventeen. Now, Brian,
- 26:47Speaker 1: name all of them?
- 26:47Speaker 2: No, I can't, No, No, I can't.
- 26:50Speaker 3: I could probably go through most of the list, but
- 26:52Speaker 3: there's a couple of names in there, so Elvis Joseph
- 26:56Speaker 3: that s evil would be like who right? I can
- 27:01Speaker 3: tell you the first ones Sam Stewart in Saint Louis
- 27:04Speaker 3: hundred nineteen yards rushing in October nineteen ninety six, and
- 27:07Speaker 3: the most recent, the most regent, was Tanks. Thanks bakes
- 27:09Speaker 3: Bank for sure, very good. We didn't make anybody show
- 27:11Speaker 3: their work. So Jeremiah, congratulations. You're gonna get your Fred
- 27:14Speaker 3: Taylor throwback jersey, a couple of other odds and ends,
- 27:17Speaker 3: a London T shirt and of course jags to riches.
- 27:20Speaker 3: If you would like something personalized, John, I'm sure would
- 27:23Speaker 3: oblige with a pleasant message in there.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Well, I'll oblige you for the message, a pleasantry.
- 27:29Speaker 1: A pleasantry of some kind. All right, what are you
- 27:31Speaker 1: guys up to? This week obviously, we practice here at
- 27:33Speaker 1: the Grove north of London for a couple more days
- 27:36Speaker 1: and then back at Wembley.
- 27:39Speaker 3: I'm going to catch up with offensive line coach Phil
- 27:41Speaker 3: Rauscher for the first time this year. You know, the
- 27:44Speaker 3: first three weeks it was rocky for that group, but
- 27:47Speaker 3: then they appear to have stabilized and found ground in
- 27:51Speaker 3: the quarterback had time to stand up in the pocket.
- 27:53Speaker 3: So he's also the run game coordinator for this team,
- 27:56Speaker 3: and the running game has been working really well. So
- 27:58Speaker 3: we should have a lot to talk about with Phil.
- 28:00Speaker 4: I'm gonna have tea with it's you. You're gonna have
- 28:02Speaker 4: tea with Walker, I mean with Cam Little and Mason Smith. Yeah,
- 28:06Speaker 4: that'll be fun. I talked about Terrek Brown for thee
- 28:09Speaker 4: O Zone podcast. Looking forward to it.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Absolutely all right, stay with us. Will be back on
- 28:13Speaker 1: JAGXAM on Thursday. Get you all ready for that game
- 28:16Speaker 1: against the Patriots.
