- 0:09Welcome to the City Center podcast from West Palm Beach,
- 0:12Florida.
- 0:12I'm Jerry Marcelo.
- 0:14When you think about the city of West Palm Beach,
- 0:17you think about shimmering water,
- 0:19white sand,
- 0:21breezy days and warm tropical nights,
- 0:24which you might not think about is probably the city's most prominent feature so prevalent.
- 0:29In fact,
- 0:30it's even part of our name.
- 0:32We live in a city named after a tree.
- 0:36It's a fact that trees are a huge part of West Palm Beach's history and more importantly,
- 0:41a critical part of its future.
- 0:44Joining me today to talk about it is Nicole Polio sustainability program coordinator for the city of West Palm Beach,
- 0:51Nicole.
- 0:52Welcome.
- 0:52Thank you.
- 0:53Thanks for having me and you're very welcome.
- 0:55Thank you for being here,
- 0:56Nicole.
- 0:57Before we jump in the trees.
- 0:58Let's talk about sustainability sustainability department here at the city.
- 1:02What does it do?
- 1:04Well,
- 1:04we do a lot of different things.
- 1:06Um personally,
- 1:07as my role,
- 1:08I'm kind of the green Infrastructure program coordinator.
- 1:11So I focus on some of our water conservation programs as well as our tree programs and then we have a lot of different things going on at once.
- 1:22An internal coordinator who does our greenhouse gas emissions,
- 1:26calculating that as well as some of our other internal reporting like CD P and things like that.
- 1:32We have our sustainability action plan that we are currently updating.
- 1:38Now,
- 1:38rethink Paradise Plan.
- 1:40We just really try to get out into the community and make a difference.
- 1:44So you have a lot of activity internal to the function and function of the city,
- 1:50but you're also doing a lot reaching out to people to do education.
- 1:54Correct?
- 1:55Yes.
- 1:56So we have um personally,
- 1:58my outreach programs are we have a rain barrel giveaway program.
- 2:02So um we can do a driver program where you do kind of the education component online before.
- 2:09But we also do in person presentations on the purpose of rain barrels and any safety aspects like installing it.
- 2:17And then you'll receive a free rain barrel.
- 2:20We also give away free trees.
- 2:22The topic of today's podcast,
- 2:24free native trees.
- 2:26You can city of West Palm Beach residents and businesses can get up to four native trees a year.
- 2:32Um We also have a home improvement program that provides retrofits to your home to make it more energy efficient and water efficient.
- 2:41And that's things you can go home and immediately install yourself.
- 2:45Ok.
- 2:46Well,
- 2:46let me ask you a question.
- 2:47Um I know that the coconut palm is actually not indigenous to our area,
- 2:53even though it's West Palm Beach.
- 2:56We,
- 2:56the coconut palm was a was a transplant.
- 2:59It's a story of a,
- 3:00of a shipwreck back in the 18 hun late 18 hundreds where coconuts washed up on shore and basically covered the area.
- 3:08Now,
- 3:08I would assume that you guys in your,
- 3:10in your programs to bring plants to the area and trees to the area.
- 3:15You're not bringing in things that are an indigenous.
- 3:18Oh,
- 3:18no,
- 3:18of course not.
- 3:19All the trees we give away to residents and the trees we try to plant are native trees.
- 3:24If,
- 3:24if we do deviate a little from the native,
- 3:27they're Florida friendly at a minimum.
- 3:30So we do promote the native trees because they just make sense in our landscape.
- 3:35You know,
- 3:35they're meant to be here.
- 3:37So they're more drought tolerant,
- 3:39they're more wind resistant and they're just hardier in general because they're supposed to grow here.
- 3:44So they're less labor intensive for pruning them and any kind of maintenance that might come up.
- 3:51I think it,
- 3:52we'll take it for granted that trees are beautiful.
- 3:55They add a lot visually to our community.
- 3:58What other things do trees bring us?
- 4:00That's so important.
- 4:01So they do obviously bring that beautiful aspect to any kind of environment.
- 4:08They decrease heat levels in the city,
- 4:11which is the most important thing in my mind is they cool off the city.
- 4:16Um And as you know,
- 4:18we just had the hottest summer on record,
- 4:21so we really need to focus our energies on that.
- 4:25What's the deal with the trees helping cooling cities are cities naturally a hot place.
- 4:31Yes,
- 4:32because of all of our development that the heat can't be absorbed into the soil because we have kind of paved over paradise in a way.
- 4:42Um That cities do become naturally hotter and then you factor in climate change and you know,
- 4:49we're just seeing some very hot days.
- 4:52So adding trees has more shade,
- 4:54makes it a very positive and creates a cooler environment.
- 4:57Correct?
- 4:58Yes.
- 4:58What other things do the trees do for us?
- 5:00Um Will they provide habitat for native wildlife?
- 5:03Um They increase property values?
- 5:06That's part of the beautification.
- 5:08They slow storm water runoff and slow erosion,
- 5:13they improve our overall health.
- 5:17Um They make people happier,
- 5:19they decrease stress levels and just contribute to overall increase in your health.
- 5:25Furthermore,
- 5:27trees actually sequester an insane amount of carbon according to the US.
- 5:32Forest service,
- 5:33America's forests,
- 5:34sequester over 800 million tons of carbon a year,
- 5:37which is roughly 12% of the US annual emissions depending on the year.
- 5:42Um They're just incredibly important to store that carbon as well.
- 5:48Even when a tree dies,
- 5:49carbon is still stored in its trunk.
- 5:52Let me ask you this.
- 5:53Ok.
- 5:53So you sold me.
- 5:54How do I add more trees to this world?
- 5:58How do I add more trees to our community?
- 6:00You plant them,
- 6:02you can come get if you're a resident of the city of Weston,
- 6:05be your business.
- 6:06You can come get a free tree from us and plant it in your yard and help contribute to our overall canopy goal.
- 6:13Tell me a little bit about the programs that are involved.
- 6:15You mentioned earlier that there are some tree giveaways.
- 6:18How do those work?
- 6:19So our tree giveaways work,
- 6:21you can either we have two different types of events,
- 6:25either a preregistration's a mix of them.
- 6:29So um we'll of course,
- 6:31put that on our flyer and on our website.
- 6:33Um,
- 6:34but you just sign up or you just show up and then you just need to,
- 6:38um,
- 6:38provide us your address and we check that on property appraiser just to you do need to be a resident.
- 6:44You do need to be either a resident or have a,
- 6:46a business within the city.
- 6:48Got you.
- 6:49Ok.
- 6:50Um,
- 6:50so we can,
- 6:52we can pick up trees from you guys obviously that we can go to the local gardening store and pick up a beautiful tree,
- 6:59hopefully indigenous so that we're bringing back what was originally here.
- 7:04Uh How do we protect the trees?
- 7:06Do we have?
- 7:07I know we have a lot of trees that are by cement and sidewalks and stuff.
- 7:11Is there anything that we should be aware of as homeowners of taking care of our trees?
- 7:15Oh,
- 7:15of course.
- 7:16I mean,
- 7:17you got to be aware of quite a few things when you're planting a tree.
- 7:22Selection is really important.
- 7:24There are trees that are better suited to the kind of environment you were just describing.
- 7:29Um And there's trees that will not thrive in that environment no matter what.
- 7:33So just do a little research I recommend if I um that's us extension office.
- 7:40Whenever I have a question about a tree,
- 7:42I just Google the tree name.
- 7:43I I,
- 7:44and then I read up on it and,
- 7:46you know,
- 7:46of course,
- 7:47the city,
- 7:47we love to be a resource as well.
- 7:49So always feel free to reach out to me.
- 7:51Um But you definitely need to take into account um the size of the tree,
- 7:57its light requirements,
- 7:58how much water it needs.
- 8:00Um If you're planting,
- 8:02you know,
- 8:03in a high traffic area,
- 8:06you want to see if the roots are like above the ground or you know how the roots grow,
- 8:11things like that.
- 8:12And you make a very good point about the roots.
- 8:14I know that uh a lot of people love and I love the beautiful Banyan trees as they grow old.
- 8:20And they're just sort of this massive structure.
- 8:23It's fantastic,
- 8:24but I understand that they're very intrusive that they can really do damage to pipes and other structures under the ground.
- 8:30Yes,
- 8:30exactly.
- 8:31And before you plant a tree,
- 8:32I should also mention that there is a free service.
- 8:35It's 811 you call that and uh they will uh delineate any utilities that you might have going under your yard.
- 8:45Um in my experience,
- 8:48the backyard's pretty clear,
- 8:50but in the front yard you might have connections,
- 8:52you know,
- 8:52your water connections and anything in the street.
- 8:55Um,
- 8:56who knows what's really going on.
- 8:58So you need to check the utilities when you're planting a tree.
- 9:01Definitely where they're located,
- 9:02you might know,
- 9:03but you might also have to call and find out and that number is 811,
- 9:07just three digits.
- 9:09Got you.
- 9:10Ok.
- 9:10Well.
- 9:11Ok.
- 9:11So we've covered a lot of ground and you know,
- 9:14we talked a little bit about the wide range of programs of sustainability.
- 9:18The department here at the city uh actually offers and is involved with.
- 9:23It seems to me that one of the main things that's going on is looking forward in time making West Palm Beach sustainable and a beautiful place to live,
- 9:32not five years from now or 10 years from now,
- 9:34but way far further down the road.
- 9:37Uh What role do you think repopulating and re uh invigorating our own canopy plays into that to that goal?
- 9:46Well,
- 9:46I think it's a very important aspect of meeting our climate goals um and achieving our net zero goal.
- 9:55So for our audience,
- 9:56tell us what net zero actually is.
- 9:58Net zero is we're trying to be um have zero carbon emissions by 2050 or a net zero goal.
- 10:07So that means whatever we're doing,
- 10:09you know,
- 10:09of course,
- 10:10our operations are going to contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions.
- 10:14But um,
- 10:15it's offset set in some way.
- 10:17And so things like planting more trees and making the city even greener than it is contributes to taking the carbon that we're putting into the system and,
- 10:28and removing it.
- 10:29Would that be correct?
- 10:30Yes,
- 10:30that is correct.
- 10:31And it also,
- 10:32you know,
- 10:32planting trees and expanding the canopy allows for other aspects of sustainability to be incorporated more easily.
- 10:40So,
- 10:41you know,
- 10:41we want to,
- 10:42we're talking about,
- 10:43you know,
- 10:43walking more biking more,
- 10:45you know,
- 10:45using your car,
- 10:46less using public transit,
- 10:47well,
- 10:48to walk and bike,
- 10:48you need cooler temperatures,
- 10:50you know,
- 10:50so it's really kind of all ties together.
- 10:54And so it's important to look at them.
- 10:56I mean,
- 10:56you think of trees,
- 10:57oh trees,
- 10:58but they are a really important pillar in trying to meet our goals.
- 11:03We've covered a lot of ground here.
- 11:05One of the things I always like to do is to ask the guest if you could,
- 11:09if you could send one message to the folks,
- 11:11the residents live here in the city of West Palm Beach,
- 11:15what would that message be that even the most little step can make a difference?
- 11:23So even if you think,
- 11:24oh what's this one plastic straw not using one plastic straw,
- 11:29that's just an easy example.
- 11:31Um won't make a difference,
- 11:32but everything adds up over time.
- 11:34And so,
- 11:35you know,
- 11:35you yourself can make a difference.
- 11:37And even if it's something small in your mind over time,
- 11:42it builds up.
- 11:43So we all need to get together on this and we need to approach it as a community and support each other.
- 11:52And you know,
- 11:53you just,
- 11:54you got to do your part really well.
- 11:56So where can people go to find out more information about tree programs and about the Department of Sustainability?
- 12:03So,
- 12:03our tree program site is W pb.org/ten K Trees and our general sustainability page,
- 12:12which you can reach the tree page through as well is W pb.org/green Nicole Polio.
