- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities CE OS and even royalty Adam Cox, these
- 0:21recordings took place live from Evans Clinic in London's world
- 0:24famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Let me ask you a question. What is your absolute worst
- 0:43fear? Another kind of imaginary fear,
- 0:46like monsters and ghosts. I'm talking about real,
- 0:50plausible fears, even if they're unlikely.
- 0:54Adam here. And this session is all about
- 0:56facing your worst fears because I was working with a client and
- 1:00their worst fear was being publicly exposed for being a
- 1:05fraud. Here's the interesting thing.
- 1:07Even though they were remarkably successful in their industry,
- 1:11they were one of the most successful people I've worked in
- 1:15getting to the very top of their industry, regularly featured on
- 1:18TV, winning awards. And yet they felt this real
- 1:21sense of imposter syndrome that they could be exposed, they
- 1:25could be judged harshly. So at its core, this is what
- 1:29that session is all about. It's about facing the very the
- 1:33worst and feeling like, well, if you can handle the worst that
- 1:37could possibly happen. Anything less than that is going
- 1:40to be a walk in the park. So I want you to think of what
- 1:43is the absolute worst thing and rather than what if that
- 1:47happens, you think, well, even if that happens, I'd still be
- 1:50OK, I can handle it. And the more you think in terms
- 1:53of even if rather than what if, the more resilient you are.
- 1:58The phrase what if is a strategy for anxiety, even if is a
- 2:03strategy for resilience. And what you tend to find is the
- 2:07people that avoid things because they're worried about what if
- 2:09something bad happens have more anxiety than the people that
- 2:13think, well, yeah, it might not go perfectly, but even if it
- 2:16doesn't go perfectly, I'm still going to be better off.
- 2:19And sometimes that does link to this idea of you either win or
- 2:22you learn, which is one of my favorite belief systems.
- 2:24So think about your worst fear. Listen to some of the
- 2:28suggestions here, but try and steer and and build the story in
- 2:31your own mind of facing your very worst fear in an empowered
- 2:35way. And by doing that, you're going
- 2:37to find that when you return back to what's more plausible
- 2:41fears, they don't seem so daunting.
- 2:44So I'd encourage you to do that. And for now, to get the best out
- 2:48of this session, just find a nice, quiet, comfortable place
- 2:51where you won't be distracted or disturbed.
- 2:53Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 3:36you breathe in, breathe in that wonderful feeling of calm
- 3:42relaxation. And as you exhale, feel a
- 3:51wonderful feeling of release, as if any fears and worries and
- 3:59tension is just melting away and leaving your body in your
- 4:06outward breath. And when you breathe in, breathe
- 4:11in that feeling of resourcefulness, feel the
- 4:17resourcefulness going in through your nose into your lungs, and
- 4:20just imagine your heart pumping that resourcefulness to every
- 4:25cell in your body in the same way that it does with oxygen.
- 4:32And you can't will your heart to pump oxygen.
- 4:37It just does it and it requires no effort for you to exhale
- 4:45carbon dioxide. So just imagine the resourceful
- 4:50feeling is going to every cell in your body, and any old ideas,
- 5:00limitations, beliefs that aren't real anyway, any echoes of
- 5:07worries, Just feel that it's leaving your body just like the
- 5:13carbon dioxide in an outward breath.
- 5:16And because you're breathing in something resourceful, make that
- 5:22breath deeper. And because you're exhaling
- 5:27something no longer desired, make the outward breath longer
- 5:36than it normally would be until your lungs are completely empty.
- 5:40And then you breathe in that feeling of resourceful
- 5:44relaxation. And the deeper you breathe, the
- 5:49more relaxed you feel. And the more relaxed you feel,
- 5:54the deeper you breathe. As your body relaxes, your
- 6:01imagination awakens. And I want you to imagine.
- 6:08Imagine your own private cinema. But since it's your own
- 6:14imagination, let's make it somewhere that feels appealing.
- 6:23Maybe you could imagine a private yacht, and on that
- 6:28private yacht is a room with your own cinema, or maybe a
- 6:35penthouse suite on the very top floor of a skyscraper with views
- 6:42over a city or maybe somewhere else.
- 6:47Just use your imagination to imagine something that would be
- 6:52special, desirable, empowering, and just imagine in that place
- 6:59is your own private cinema, something modern, something
- 7:10stylish or opulent or relaxing in some way, and just imagine
- 7:16you've got that room all to yourself.
- 7:23People are fascinated by things they fear.
- 7:27There is a reason that people will watch a horror movie, a
- 7:31movie about violence. Fear equals fascination.
- 7:40And here's the interesting thing about fear.
- 7:44When you avoid it or run away from it, it follows you.
- 7:52When you're willing to confront the fear, it disappears.
- 8:01And I want you to imagine on that large cinema screen that
- 8:05you have all for yourself. I want you to imagine a
- 8:11scenario, a scene, a scene of harsh judgement.
- 8:20I want your imagination to imagine that you are an actor on
- 8:23the screen. And I want you to imagine the
- 8:27very harshest that you could be judged.
- 8:33Maybe you make a mistake. Maybe you have a freeze
- 8:37response. Maybe you say something silly or
- 8:42inaccurate. Allow your imagination to show
- 8:48something that would be mortifying, humiliating,
- 8:54embarrassing, something that other people could judge or
- 9:00criticize. And I want you to make peace
- 9:08with that possibility. Not because you want it, simply
- 9:16because the moment you feel that even if that catastrophic,
- 9:22humiliating, embarrassing thing happened, you could still handle
- 9:27that. You could still wake up the next
- 9:31day. Your life still has value.
- 9:36You can still live life on your terms.
- 9:42Well then it means you have inoculated yourself from the
- 9:49very root cause of fear. Because anxiety is based on a
- 9:58false premise that you can't handle the thing or the
- 10:03consequences. And the moment you create a
- 10:08belief that you can, paradoxically, the anxiety
- 10:14reduces and the probability of that very thing you wouldn't
- 10:19want to happen reduces. It doesn't increase the
- 10:26probability just because you've imagined it.
- 10:30Imagining that you can handle the thing or the consequences
- 10:35means that your brain doesn't need to be on high alert.
- 10:41It doesn't need to be vigilant or over prepared.
- 10:49Imagine you are the observer of this scene.
- 10:54But also the director. Imagine seeing yourself do that
- 11:02thing that could be cause for harsh judgement.
- 11:07And yet imagine that version of you dealing with it gracefully,
- 11:16with humility, elegance, professionalism.
- 11:23And if you could imagine different variations of that
- 11:26scene in such a way where you can either handle the thing or
- 11:31the consequences, let me know by nodding your head.
- 11:48That's it. And then think of one more
- 11:51scenario like that. Maybe it's the same people, same
- 11:58environment, but maybe a different response, or maybe the
- 12:03same type of response but a different scenario that causes
- 12:07it. And I want you to get a feeling
- 12:12that that version of you can handle that outcome and then
- 12:23rewind it and then think, what could you do in the event that
- 12:32that thing happened? Some people would call that a
- 12:38contingency. But if that thing happened, you
- 12:44could reduce the possibility or probability by doing something
- 12:48subtly. Maybe it's saying that you feel
- 12:52nauseous and need to go to the toilet grabbing a glass of
- 12:57water. Maybe you see that version of
- 13:03you coughing at the very point where words don't seem to be
- 13:09coming. I want you to get a sense that
- 13:14once you've reconciled the worst, then allow your mind to
- 13:20figure out ways to consider all eventualities and then mitigate.
- 13:29Knowing you can handle the worst just means that this this is
- 13:37forward planning. Think of how many flights you've
- 13:41been on and on every flight. They gave a.
- 13:46Safety demonstration telling you where masks and airbags are, but
- 13:54not once have you had to use them.
- 13:58And I want you to think of the masks and airbags for this
- 14:03situation, not because you're expecting it and not because
- 14:08you're wanting it, just in case. And when you figured out how to
- 14:18mitigate that possibility so that even if it happens, you
- 14:25could reduce the probability of any undesirable consequences,
- 14:29let me know by nodding your head.
- 14:45That's it. And now change the channel on
- 14:50that big cinema. And instead of a scene of
- 14:55judgement, I want you to imagine a scene of conflict,
- 14:58confrontation. Allow your imagination to show
- 15:03you your worst nightmare. Maybe it's being confronted
- 15:09publicly, maybe it's being attacked on your character, your
- 15:15credibility, or something else. And just imagine.
- 15:23Imagine that version of you doesn't want that, but if needs
- 15:29be could handle that and every time you see a scene, rewind it
- 15:37and change it slightly. All the iterations and
- 15:42variations all seem manageable. The confrontation itself and any
- 15:51consequences and what you could imagine dealing with that worst
- 15:58case scenario, just as the observer seeing yourself on that
- 16:03screen, let me know by nodding your head
- 16:17and then rewind it. And then think of those
- 16:21contingencies that if you were confronted, if someone did want
- 16:29conflict, what could you do to deescalate?
- 16:35Maybe it's to be curious, maybe it's to ask a question, maybe
- 16:44it's to find some kind of common ground, or maybe something else.
- 16:53Just allow your imagination to show you just how many ways
- 16:58there is to take that conflict, that confrontation, and make it
- 17:06different, perhaps even playful or silly or something else.
- 17:18Some people actively want conflict and confrontation.
- 17:24It gives them permission to articulate things that they know
- 17:30how to say. Some people want a confrontation
- 17:37because they know exactly how to dial it down.
- 17:42And if you could imagine different ways to mitigate or
- 17:50manage this worst case scenario, let me know by nodding your
- 17:54head. That's it.
- 18:18And we need to get a belief that comes from this, that if you can
- 18:25handle and manage these worst case scenarios and by definition
- 18:33you can handle everything that is less than these things.
- 18:42This is training at altitude for resilience.
- 18:47Even if these things happened you can handle, it means that
- 18:51you can handle everything up to these things, which then means
- 18:57that everything becomes a lower stakes situation.
- 19:05It becomes no big deal, becomes manageable.
- 19:10And paradoxically, the more you seek out these things that
- 19:15you've been avoiding, the more you build a belief that you have
- 19:21the resources to handle it. And each time that belief gets
- 19:26stronger, you'll feel more confident and any anxiety or
- 19:32worry becomes more elusive. Your brain is interpreting how
- 19:38to feel based on what you do when you request to speak.
- 19:48Anxiety gets less When you want to speak first.
- 19:53Anxiety gets less when you invite disagreement.
- 20:01Criticism. Your unconscious comes to the
- 20:05belief that you can handle disagreements.
- 20:11Differing opinions. And each time you become more
- 20:17and more resilient. Just imagine on that screen
- 20:20seeing yourself one year from now doing something in such a
- 20:29calm, confident way that Once Upon a time would have put you
- 20:35on edge, but in the future seems well within your grasp.
- 20:43Consider this a post hypnotic suggestion that these changes
- 20:50here will seek a chain reaction. You will move towards the things
- 20:58you've been avoiding. Anxiety becomes more elusive.
- 21:05A part of you wants these worst case scenarios to happen so that
- 21:10you can banish the demon and it never returns.
- 21:18There's a part within you that wants to hold the tarantula so
- 21:23that the spiders aren't scary. And in doing so, you build a new
- 21:33belief. A belief that these things that
- 21:38used to haunt you no longer bother you.
- 21:46When the belief changes, the emotions also change.
- 21:53Allow the beliefs to change from I can't handle this to what?
- 22:00If that thing did happen, I could totally handle it.
- 22:05I'd be fine. And then imagine dialing down
- 22:12all of the physical sensations that bothered you in the past.
- 22:17Just feel less and less and less.
- 22:21And then imagine leaving that cinema but seeing something that
- 22:26looks like a thermostat right by the door, but instead of it
- 22:31showing temperature, it shows confidence and optimism.
- 22:38And see the number that they're currently on, a number between
- 22:411:00 and 10:00. And just dial it up a few
- 22:45notches for either of them. If it's a 5, get it to an 8.
- 22:52If it's a 7, get it to a nine. If it's a nine, dial it up to
- 22:56A10. And just feel that optimism and
- 23:01confidence are now higher than it was before as you leave that
- 23:05room. And maybe you could imagine
- 23:09looking out around you, the ocean, the cityscape or
- 23:15something else. And then imagine it's time to
- 23:18float all the way back to the present, taking these wonderful
- 23:23feelings with you. New ideas a bring it on
- 23:29attitude. So take a deep breath in through
- 23:32your nose and out through your nose.
- 23:38Wiggle your fingers and wiggle your toes.
- 23:40Connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I now count
- 23:46from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 23:49Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 23:58Open your eyes. Open your eyes. 910.
- 24:01Wide awake. Wide awake.
- 24:04Wide awake. Thank you.
