- 0:00Welcome back to the Sacred Men YouTube channel.
- 0:02Here's how we're starting. Picture a man, he's sitting in
- 0:06his truck in the parking lot of his office on Monday morning.
- 0:11Just came from a great weekend at church.
- 0:14He sang, he gave, maybe even let his family in prayer over
- 0:18breakfast. And now he's staring at that
- 0:20building and he's got a choice to make, right?
- 0:24There's a deal on the table. There's a meeting he's got to
- 0:27have. There's a client who doesn't
- 0:29fully understand what they're agreeing to.
- 0:32There's a vendor that he knows he can squeeze because he's got
- 0:35all the leverage. There's an employee who's been
- 0:37working overtime and hasn't said a word about it.
- 0:41And he's sitting there thinking, what would it cost me to do the
- 0:46right thing? That question, what would it
- 0:50cost me to do the right thing, is the question of a man who
- 0:55hasn't yet understood what God is doing with his life.
- 1:00Because God's answer to that question isn't a lot.
- 1:05God's answer is, Son, righteousness isn't just the
- 1:10right thing to do, it's who I made you to be.
- 1:16Again, welcome back to Sacred Men.
- 1:18Today we're going to do a deep dive on two of the most
- 1:21important words in the whole Bible for men in the working
- 1:26world, in our vocations. And those words are
- 1:30righteousness and justice, words that don't get thrown around a
- 1:34lot, especially not righteousness, justice.
- 1:36We might think of the justice system, but righteousness and
- 1:39justice have a lot to do with how you do good work in the
- 1:42world. So today we're going to look at
- 1:44what they mean, where they come from, why they're inseparable,
- 1:48you need to hold them together and what they look like on a
- 1:52Monday afternoon, a Tuesday afternoon, a Wednesday afternoon
- 1:55when no one from the church is watching what you do.
- 2:01So if you're new to this podcast, this podcast is all
- 2:04about training and equipping and encouraging Christian men to be
- 2:08virtuous men in a weak and effeminate culture.
- 2:11This podcast is for men who want to follow Jesus in the real and
- 2:14complicated high stakes terrain of their actual lives.
- 2:18Not just the places where faith is easy, like church, but in the
- 2:21place where it actually costs us something, like in our vocations
- 2:25at work. I want to start here with this
- 2:28conviction that should drive everything that we do.
- 2:34God doesn't call men to be passive.
- 2:37We're not meant to sit back and wait for things to happen.
- 2:40He calls men to take initiative. He calls men to be formed.
- 2:45That means shaped from the inside out by His Word, by His
- 2:49Spirit, and even by the work that He's assigned for us to do.
- 2:54And that work doesn't stop when you clock in on Monday morning.
- 2:59It just changes venues. So it's not like we're trying to
- 3:01do hard work, soul work, internal work, just at church or
- 3:05just in our Bible time. And now we move on to something
- 3:08else. No, He wants to shape us from
- 3:10the inside out, even in our vocations, even at our
- 3:12workplace. This episode today is really
- 3:16built around something relatively simple.
- 3:20Your vocation is your sacred trust.
- 3:25The work you do, the people you lead, the clients you serve, the
- 3:28family you provide for, all of it is a stage on which you get
- 3:33to display or deny the character of God.
- 3:38We're going to look at Proverbs, We're going to look at prophets.
- 3:40We're going to look at the New Testament to see what they say
- 3:44about the kind of men God wants us to be at work.
- 3:46I'm going to warn you up front, this one's going to cut.
- 3:50It's going to be difficult to digest because we've all failed
- 3:55this, right? So we're going to be, we're,
- 3:57we're aspiring to this. We know that we failed it.
- 3:59And I'm going to tell you what to do about it if you have
- 4:02failed. OK, So but for me, I would
- 4:05rather have the truth up front, 100 proof, have my toes stepped
- 4:09on a little bit, then be a fool or be a man who God looks at and
- 4:16says, you know, you're not doing a good job, right?
- 4:19So let's get into it today. First segment on this, I want to
- 4:22look at our character. I want to look at what the Bible
- 4:25calls righteousness. In order to do that, we got to
- 4:29define our terms. The word the Old Testament uses
- 4:32most often for righteousness is the Hebrew word, and I can't say
- 4:36this word. So it's seteka or it's cousin
- 4:41Sadiq, the righteous man. And what it describes is not
- 4:45primarily a list of character traits or a list of behaviors.
- 4:50It's described so the righteous man or righteousness is a
- 4:55fundamental orientation of the heart.
- 4:59I preached on this on last Sunday and I said righteousness
- 5:04is like AGPS system that's placed in the heart that orients
- 5:08you to God. So a righteous man is a man
- 5:12whose heart is directed or pointed at God.
- 5:17That means he takes God seriously.
- 5:19God is my ultimate authority. He's the final judge.
- 5:22He's the source of all wisdom and goodness.
- 5:25The Bible calls this actually the fear of the Lord.
- 5:28Fear is a worship word. It's a word like love or trust
- 5:33or to be devoted to it's it's a fear of like reverence and awe
- 5:37and Proverbs is like obsessed with the fear of the Lord.
- 5:42It comes up again and again and again and it says it's the
- 5:45foundation for everything else in life.
- 5:48Proverbs 910 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
- 5:53and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
- 5:56Here's what this means for us, practically.
- 5:58A man who fears God cannot be ultimately owned by anything
- 6:05else. So he has to fear God more than
- 6:07he fears anything else. Not money, not reputation, not
- 6:13the approval of his peers. The fear of man, not even the
- 6:16safety of his family. He must love God more than he
- 6:21loves them. His deepest allegiance is to
- 6:25God, and that allegiance, that heart orientation towards God,
- 6:30shapes everything else, including what happens inside of
- 6:34the conference room, the job site, or negotiation.
- 6:38Now Proverbs likes to show contrasts and he, Proverbs
- 6:44contrasts the righteous man, the man whose heart is oriented
- 6:47towards the Lord, with the wicked man.
- 6:51And the dividing line here isn't between these two, isn't what we
- 6:55would think. It's not wealth or success or
- 6:58intelligence or social status. The dividing line is actually
- 7:01the direction of the heart. OK, Proverbs 11/6, the
- 7:05righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the
- 7:09treacherous are taken captive by their lust.
- 7:12See the wicked man in Proverbs. He's not necessarily like a
- 7:15violent criminal. I said on Sunday, he's not.
- 7:18You know the the wicked man doesn't just shop it Hot Topic
- 7:22and look like it's Halloween 365 days a year.
- 7:26You often don't see him coming. He's often the wicked man is
- 7:29often a respectable businessman. He's the guy.
- 7:33But he's the guy who uses dishonest scales, who moves
- 7:37boundary markers, Proverbs tells us, who sells inferior goods and
- 7:41calls them premium, who withholds wages from those he
- 7:44owes wages to, who uses his advantage to take from the
- 7:49vulnerable. So this guy, the wicked, he
- 7:52doesn't look wicked on the outside in Proverbs.
- 7:54Most of the time, he actually looks what we would call
- 7:56successful. But here's what Proverbs says
- 7:59about that kind of success. Treasures gained by wickedness
- 8:04do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death.
- 8:09See, what you build through dishonesty won't last.
- 8:13It won't satisfy. It doesn't pass on to the next
- 8:17generation most of the time, and it doesn't endure the ultimate
- 8:21judgement of God. Only righteousness can deliver
- 8:24you from death and second death and the judgement of God.
- 8:29Righteousness, again, it's an identity.
- 8:32It's who we are. It's not just a performance.
- 8:36I got to be careful here because there's a version of being a
- 8:39Christian businessman or being a righteous businessman that's
- 8:42really just a more sophisticated form of reputation management,
- 8:47right? You do the right thing because
- 8:49it's good for the brand. You treat people well because it
- 8:54keeps your positive five star reviews up.
- 8:57That's not actually righteousness.
- 8:59Righteousness is who you are when no one's watching.
- 9:03Righteousness is who you are when the deal is being done
- 9:06behind closed doors, right when you couldn't possibly get away
- 9:10with anything. The righteous man is the man
- 9:13whose inner compass is calibrated to God.
- 9:18It's not just calibrated to what could I get away with, what
- 9:21would profit me the most, right? OK, so that's righteousness.
- 9:24Let's move on to the next segment, which is on justice.
- 9:28Justice is about giving every person what they're owed.
- 9:33So if righteousness is about who you are, justice is about what
- 9:37you do. The Hebrew word is misfought and
- 9:40it carries the idea of proper order, right relationships,
- 9:43giving every person what they're owed.
- 9:46Now again, we we tend to think of justice as something for
- 9:50courts and government, and it is.
- 9:52But in the Bible, misfought justice starts much closer at
- 9:56home. It starts with every
- 9:57transaction, every relationship, every contract you enter into
- 10:04Proverbs 21 three, to do righteousness and justice is
- 10:09more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
- 10:12Now think about that. God says doing right by the
- 10:16people in your life is more important to him than your
- 10:19religious offerings, more important than your Sunday
- 10:23attendance, more important than your small group, your church
- 10:26volunteer hours. Not that those things don't
- 10:29matter, of course they do. But they don't substitute for
- 10:32justice. They never have.
- 10:35Now, Micah the prophet Micah nails this.
- 10:38He says this in Micah 68. He has told you, oh man, God has
- 10:42told you, oh man, what is good and what does the Lord require
- 10:46of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly
- 10:53with your God. Do justice, love kindness, walk
- 10:57humbly with your God. Now those are three marks of a
- 11:03man who gets it right. And notice, do justice.
- 11:10That's the first thing on the list.
- 11:11Not feel justice. Not support justice as a
- 11:15concept. Not March for justice.
- 11:17Do it. It's an action verb.
- 11:19So what does justice look like in your specific vocation?
- 11:23Let's get real concrete here. If you're an employer, justice
- 11:29means fair pay for honest work. It means timely payment.
- 11:35It means clear expectations. It means being the kind of boss
- 11:39who communicates when something is wrong rather than just
- 11:42stewing on it and resentment and then dropping the hammer on
- 11:45somebody. The righteous man, Proverbs 29,
- 11:48seven says, knows the rights of the poor, which he means.
- 11:53He pays attention to the people in his organization who maybe
- 11:56have the least power, the least leverage, and probably are the
- 11:59most vulnerable. Now, to your clients and
- 12:02customers, Justice means delivering exactly what you
- 12:05promised, doing what you said, right?
- 12:08The real thing it's it's not hiding something in the fine
- 12:15print, right? To confuse people or to screw
- 12:19people over. It's not upselling people into
- 12:22products they don't actually need.
- 12:25It's not bait and switch type of stuff.
- 12:27To your vendors and to your partners, justice means paying
- 12:30on time, right? It means not trying to
- 12:35renegotiate a contract after the work is done because you need
- 12:38the work right or you need the money.
- 12:42Proverbs says a lot about this in Proverbs 11/1 says a false
- 12:45balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just wait is his
- 12:50delight. Now that might be hard to
- 12:52understand dishonest scales, right?
- 12:55That image comes from ancient commerce.
- 12:58And but it really just means having fair dealings, not trying
- 13:02to screw people over, right? The man who has one weight when
- 13:06he's trying to buy things and another weight when he's trying
- 13:09to sell things. He's trying.
- 13:11He's just trying to screw somebody over.
- 13:13It's the consultant who bills for hours that he didn't
- 13:17actually work. It's the contractor who use
- 13:19inferior materials and then he charges as if they were premium
- 13:23materials. It's the employer who
- 13:26reclassifies workers to avoid benefits.
- 13:31It's not good business. It's actually unjust business
- 13:37practices. Now, to your family, this means
- 13:41giving your wife the love and the fidelity and the devotion
- 13:45that you owe her. That you vowed to give her means
- 13:49giving your children your time, your presence, your discipline,
- 13:51your example, not just your provision.
- 13:55A man who builds a great business at the expense of his
- 13:57marriage has ultimately failed, right?
- 14:01He's failed at the most important vocation he's got.
- 14:05And here's one that honestly just really cuts me.
- 14:08I, I shared it on Sunday. It's from Psalm 15.
- 14:10Four. It says the righteous man swears
- 14:13to his own hurt and does not change.
- 14:17That means he makes a commitment.
- 14:19He gives his word. And when circumstances shift and
- 14:22keeping his word becomes really costly, he keeps it anyway.
- 14:26He does the right thing no matter what, because a man of
- 14:30God is a man of his word, full stop.
- 14:34Now, as I said, Proverbs contrast the righteous man with
- 14:39the wicked often. And I want to address this
- 14:42because if you work in any kind of any kind of environment,
- 14:45right, corporate environment, you're working on a job site
- 14:48wherever you're at. You know that even wicked men,
- 14:53men whose heart isn't oriented to God, they still often talk
- 14:57about fairness. They still often talk about
- 15:00ethics and treating people right.
- 15:02And of course, even in our liberal society and those on the
- 15:06left, they still talk about justice and equality and equity
- 15:10and all those things. But they don't reference God
- 15:12whatsoever and they usually mean something totally different by
- 15:15it. So what's the difference?
- 15:18Like, why does it matter if justice is actually grounded in
- 15:24the fear of the Lord, or if it's just in good values, if it's
- 15:28just in what I think is good or right or just right?
- 15:33Well, Proverbs actually answered this directly.
- 15:35He says this in Proverbs 28. Five evil men, the wicked man,
- 15:39the godless man, do not understand justice, but those
- 15:43who seek the Lord understand it completely.
- 15:47See, God is a God of justice. And so when we're oriented to
- 15:50God, he's going to teach us what justice is and how to be more
- 15:55just men. But if your heart isn't oriented
- 15:58to God, you're going to be what you're going to be oriented to
- 16:01something else, probably yourself.
- 16:03So the Bible here doesn't say that evil men don't understand
- 16:07justice because they're stupid. It's not because they haven't
- 16:10read the right, you know, business ethics books, right?
- 16:14But because justice, real justice, requires an ultimate
- 16:18foundation outside of yourself, an ultimate standard of justice.
- 16:22And without God, there is no such foundation.
- 16:25If there's no God above you, then your standard of justice is
- 16:29whatever benefits you the most, or whatever your culture
- 16:32currently agrees on, or whatever the law technically allows.
- 16:38And all of those standards are just infinitely flexible.
- 16:42They move based on political power and pressure and what you
- 16:46can possibly get away with. But the man who fears God, he's
- 16:50got a different orientation. He knows that every person he
- 16:53does business with is made in the image of God and has certain
- 16:57inalienable rights that come from God.
- 16:59And that gives every person, every employee, every client,
- 17:03every vendor, every person on the other side of the table, an
- 17:06inherent right and inherent dignity that cannot be
- 17:10negotiated away. And it also means that we will
- 17:14give an account one day for how we treat the people we do
- 17:17business with. See, when you remove the fear of
- 17:21God from a man's business ethics, you don't just, you
- 17:25know, change his salvation or change his theology.
- 17:29You're actually changing his entire framework for what people
- 17:33are worth and what people are owed, right?
- 17:36You're changing the whole framework of justice.
- 17:39This is why a person's faith isn't just a private matter that
- 17:43stays in church or stays between them and God.
- 17:46Your faith is your operating system of your whole life.
- 17:50If you take it out, you're just left with a man who is only as
- 17:55ethical as his current incentives allow him to be.
- 18:01But if you have God, the fear of the Lord as your ultimate
- 18:08standard of justice, then you're going to have a man who does
- 18:12right by people even when no one is watching.
- 18:16And the deal, you know, he might lose the deal, he might get the
- 18:20will it the deal. It doesn't really matter because
- 18:22God is my standard and I'm going to do the right thing no matter
- 18:25what the circumstances, how they would benefit me or how they
- 18:29would hurt me. See, that's the type of men
- 18:32God's building. That's a righteous man who does
- 18:35justice. That's the man that your family
- 18:37needs. That's the man that your
- 18:39business needs. That's the man that your city
- 18:41needs. Now, if you've been tracking
- 18:44with me, there's a question you might be asking yourself, like
- 18:48how? Because you look out in the
- 18:51world and it looks like the most successful men are the guys that
- 18:54screw people over, right? So you might ask, how does a man
- 18:57actually become like this? How does he get the kind of
- 19:00heart that is genuinely oriented towards God, that genuinely
- 19:04cares about the people he serves, that doesn't just
- 19:08perform, you know, have some kind of performative integrity
- 19:13or character, but actually is who he says he is?
- 19:16Well, that is the right question.
- 19:18And the honest answer is, well, you cannot manufacture this on
- 19:22your own. You can't speak it into
- 19:23existence. You can't read enough books to
- 19:26make yourself this type of man. You can't just will yourself to
- 19:30be more ethical. Now you could put guardrails in
- 19:34place, you can get accountability partners, you can
- 19:36do all this kind of stuff and that's fine.
- 19:37But none of it gets to the root. See, Jesus was once asked this a
- 19:41question similarly by a lawyer who said, what's the greatest
- 19:44commandment? And Jesus said you shall love
- 19:46the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with
- 19:49all your mind. You must be a righteous man.
- 19:52You must be oriented to God. He says this is the first and
- 19:56greatest commandment. Then he says, then a second is
- 19:58like it. You shall love your neighbor as
- 20:00yourself. You must do justice.
- 20:02You must treat others how they're should be treated,
- 20:05right? You must give them justice.
- 20:07You must give them what you owe them.
- 20:09So he says here, love God with everything you've got.
- 20:12Love your neighbor as yourself. Well, that that's the entire
- 20:15standard of righteousness and justice compressed down into two
- 20:19sentences. And our whole society would be
- 20:21changed if we actually live that way, right?
- 20:23Business would be changed. Politics would change,
- 20:26everything would change if we actually live those two
- 20:28sentences out. But if you're honest, you know
- 20:34you haven't done that. I know I haven't done that
- 20:37right? I've loved other things more
- 20:39than I love God. I love myself too often more
- 20:44than I love my neighbors more than I love my wife and my
- 20:46spouse and the people around me. We have all probably valued our
- 20:51own comfort, our own advancement, our own reputation
- 20:54over the people that God has placed in our life.
- 20:58Now that means every man listening to this episode has
- 21:02failed Jesus standard. That failure is what the Bible
- 21:07calls sin. It's got a weight to it, it has
- 21:10a cost, it has a punishment. But here is the good news.
- 21:15This is the news that literally changes everything.
- 21:17Jesus came and did what we could not do.
- 21:20He was the perfectly righteous man.
- 21:22He was the perfectly just man. He loved God with all of his
- 21:25heart, with all of his soul, with all of his mind.
- 21:27He loved his neighbors more than He loved himself.
- 21:31He gave up himself to save them on the cross, right?
- 21:35He went to the cross as our substitute, as our
- 21:39representative. He bore the cost of every single
- 21:44sin that we have committed, every dishonest deal, every act
- 21:48of cowardice, every moment that we chose our self and our
- 21:52comfort over the people we were supposed to serve.
- 21:55And when a man puts his faith in Jesus, when he repents of his
- 22:00self-serving ways and trust in Christ, something remarkable
- 22:03happens. Romans 55 tells us that the love
- 22:07of God is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
- 22:12Now this is fascinating to me. I use this illustration when I
- 22:16when I spoke on this on Sunday morning, I said every Father's
- 22:22Day my kids give me gifts and I love them.
- 22:26But every single one of my Father's Day gifts I have paid
- 22:30for, right? My kids don't have jobs, my kids
- 22:32don't have money, so I've paid for my own gifts.
- 22:35When God tells us that we're to love Him with all of our heart,
- 22:38soul, mind, and strength, that's almost impossible.
- 22:41It is impossible until He pours His love into us, as Romans 55
- 22:46says. So in a sense, He's giving us
- 22:49what we need to give back to Him.
- 22:51He's loving us. He's pouring His love into us,
- 22:53and now we are capable to actually use the love that He's
- 22:56poured into us through the power of the Holy Spirit and love Him
- 22:59back, right? To me, that's the best news in
- 23:04the universe. God gives us what He requires of
- 23:09right. He requires love and he gives it
- 23:11to us first. This is great news.
- 23:15Now that right there, the gospel of Jesus Christ, that God gives
- 23:20what he requires first and what because of what Jesus has done
- 23:23for us, that is the only foundation on which a genuinely
- 23:27righteous man can be built. That's how he's built.
- 23:30That's where he comes from. It doesn't come from our
- 23:33willpower. It doesn't come from our
- 23:35intellectual capacity. It doesn't come from the fear of
- 23:38consequences or a better morning routine.
- 23:41It's the transforming grace of God at work in my soul from the
- 23:46inside out, making me into the man that my wife needs, that my
- 23:51children deserve, that my employees can trust, and that my
- 23:54God is honored by. Now, if you're not there yet,
- 23:59like if you're listening to this and you know that you're not
- 24:01that man, right? The man that you've been doesn't
- 24:04match the man you want to be, well guess what?
- 24:07This can be the moment everything changes, turn to
- 24:10Jesus. Tell him the truth, confess your
- 24:12sins, repent, put your faith in Him, He already knows it
- 24:15anyways, and trust Him to begin doing in you what you cannot do
- 24:20for yourself. Now, I want to move through this
- 24:23segment pretty quickly, but what I want to do is I want to give 5
- 24:26marks of a righteous man who does justice in his vocation.
- 24:32OK, 5 marks of a righteous man who does justice in his
- 24:35vocation. I want to get really practical
- 24:37here. And here they are #1A righteous
- 24:42man keeps his word even when it costs him.
- 24:48The righteous man swears to his own hurt and does not change.
- 24:52Psalm 15-4. If you're committed to a price.
- 24:55If you're committed to a deadline, if you committed to a
- 24:59level of service, hold it, Keep it.
- 25:02Renegotiating contracts after the fact because circumstances
- 25:05changed is actually a righteousness or a character
- 25:09issue. It's not just a business issue.
- 25:12Men of the word keep their word #2 He uses honest weights in
- 25:18every transaction. Proverbs 11/1 says dishonest
- 25:21scales are an abomination to the Lord.
- 25:25That means no double standards, charging 1 price when you have
- 25:28leverage and another when you don't.
- 25:30Right? No padding invoices here, no
- 25:32hiding fees, no inflating your qualifications.
- 25:35Give people what you would want to receive every time #3 He
- 25:41knows the rights of those who are less powerful than him.
- 25:46Proverbs 29 seven says the righteous man knows the rights
- 25:49of the poor. Who in your organization, your
- 25:52supply chain, your household has the least power.
- 25:57Are you protecting them or are you using them?
- 26:00Do you know what your employees are actually dealing with?
- 26:02What's going on in their life? Are you paying your vendors on
- 26:06time? Are you treating your household
- 26:09with respect? Righteousness moves towards the
- 26:15vulnerable #4HE refuses to let success become his God.
- 26:23Proverbs 16-8. Better is a little with
- 26:25righteousness than great revenues with injustice.
- 26:30The righteous man is willing to leave money on the table, and
- 26:34that's that's OK with him. He would rather do that than
- 26:38compromise his integrity for a deal.
- 26:41He knows the difference between building a great business and
- 26:46building a great life. Those are not always the same
- 26:49thing #5 he brings his whole self to work, including his
- 26:55faith now, not by lecturing colleagues or plastering Bible
- 27:01verses on his office wall, but by being the same man at work as
- 27:04he is at church, by doing quality work, by treating people
- 27:08with dignity and justice, by making decisions that reflect
- 27:12his fear of God. Colossians 2-3.
- 27:15Whatever you do, work heartily. As for the Lord, what that means
- 27:19is you're never off duty, you're always a Christian, you're
- 27:23always a man of God. You are a righteous man.
- 27:27Now do justice. Now here's why this matters so
- 27:33much. It's more than just being a good
- 27:37man in your own personal holiness or righteousness.
- 27:41Proverbs 1434 says righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a
- 27:47reproach to any people. Proverbs 29 two says when the
- 27:52righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked
- 27:55rule, the people groan. The health of your family, the
- 27:59health of your company, the health of your community, and
- 28:03eventually even the health and the vitality of your culture
- 28:07depends on the character, the collective character, the virtue
- 28:12of the men within it. Not our, you know, political
- 28:16policies, not our regulations, not our programs.
- 28:21The character of the men, the virtue of the men, the
- 28:25righteousness of the men. If we want a righteous nation
- 28:28which gets exalted by God, we need righteous men.
- 28:34Think about what it looks like when righteous men fill a
- 28:38workplace. People are treated with dignity,
- 28:43with respect, with justice. Wages are fair.
- 28:46Contracts are honored, weaker parties are protected rather
- 28:49than exploited, customers get what they're paid for, and the
- 28:52whole ecosystem becomes more trustworthy, more stable, more
- 28:58human. This leads to a high trust
- 29:01society. Now think about the opposite.
- 29:05When the wicked men rule things right, Proverbs says.
- 29:10People groan, and Proverbs is ruthlessly honest about what
- 29:15that looks like, right? The vulnerable are crushed, the
- 29:20dishonest thrive until usually they find their own destruction
- 29:25and they destroy other people in the process.
- 29:28And the whole culture is torn down, it decays and is
- 29:32ultimately destroyed. What that means is by being a
- 29:35righteous man who does justice in his vocation, you're not just
- 29:39building a career, you're shaping a culture.
- 29:43Every business relationship you handle honestly right is
- 29:51building a better culture. It's a it's a brick in the wall
- 29:59of a more just world, a more just city.
- 30:05Every employee you treat with dignity is a human being who
- 30:09goes home and guess what? More than likely treats someone
- 30:13else better. Every promise you keep when it's
- 30:19difficult to keep it echoes forward into people's lives that
- 30:22you'll never see. So if you want to change a
- 30:25society, if you want to change a culture, be righteous and do
- 30:28justice. If you want your kids to live in
- 30:30a better world, be righteous and do justice.
- 30:35This is one of the reasons why our vocations are sacred.
- 30:40They're devoted to God. This is why justice is not just
- 30:44personal ethics, it's participation in God's ongoing
- 30:50work of ordering and renewing his world.
- 30:55Then this is one of the reasons why God has put you on this
- 30:58earth. We are here to glorify Him in
- 31:01everything we do, to make this world a better place by being
- 31:05righteous men who do justice now.
