- 0:59Speaker 1: Dot up work dot com suddenly holds steps up what
- 1:14Speaker 1: NFL history. Watt has tied Michael Strahands single season record
- 1:21Speaker 1: twenty two and a half. Sex t J one comes
- 1:26Speaker 1: through again. Yes he did, as he has been doing
- 1:33Speaker 1: all season long. That was Week e teen. T J
- 1:35Speaker 1: Watt time Michael strayhands all time sack record twenty two
- 1:40Speaker 1: and a half, absolutely amazing and an absolute terror for
- 1:44Speaker 1: offenses this year. I'm like, yeah, I'm here's always with
- 1:47Speaker 1: my good friend Addi kinkawala. Add I know you've got
- 1:50Speaker 1: something on t J for me, but I gotta say hello, well,
- 1:52Speaker 1: good morning. And obviously, because I was there for that, Mike,
- 1:56Speaker 1: that rainy, rainy, cold, nasty day, at least he got
- 2:00Speaker 1: to see something kind of cool. So there's the fun
- 2:03Speaker 1: story aspect of it while you were soaking wet and well,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and I did and I did talk to t J
- 2:08Speaker 1: afterwards obviously, and you know he appropriately gave credit to
- 2:11Speaker 1: everybody else around him. Uh. What's really interesting, though, Mike,
- 2:16Speaker 1: is that there was a play earlier in the game
- 2:19Speaker 1: that felt like it was a sack should have been
- 2:22Speaker 1: a sack, and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in his postgame
- 2:25Speaker 1: comments kept dropping that he hopes the NFL changes what
- 2:30Speaker 1: the official statistics are and finds t J Watt to
- 2:33Speaker 1: have sack so he can hold that record all by himself. Yeah,
- 2:36Speaker 1: the pomp and circumstance though, will be a little bit
- 2:38Speaker 1: different now that they potentially could do it on the
- 2:41Speaker 1: back half, But it is NFL explained. NFL records, we
- 2:44Speaker 1: are all about those monumental moments for the game, and
- 2:47Speaker 1: at first the DD, you know, we weren't sure if
- 2:48Speaker 1: there were going to be enough records from one to
- 2:51Speaker 1: do an entire episode on. But the research continues to
- 2:55Speaker 1: pour in and we just saw how many interesting stats
- 2:57Speaker 1: there were, so I promised this episode is going to
- 2:59Speaker 1: be nothing short of record breaking. But before we get
- 3:02Speaker 1: rolling and discuss all the record breaking numbers, I think
- 3:07Speaker 1: we're going to talk a little bit about this season first.
- 3:09Speaker 1: The thing that always will come to my mind a
- 3:11Speaker 1: d D and I think it's the same for everyone
- 3:14Speaker 1: is the pandemic. So I think we should quickly dive
- 3:16Speaker 1: into some crazy NFL numbers regarding COVID, especially since this
- 3:20Speaker 1: is the second season in this pandemic, hopefully my second
- 3:25Speaker 1: and final forever and ever and ever. So, from September
- 3:29Speaker 1: nine one, the start of the season, to January tenth,
- 3:33Speaker 1: the final regular season game, nine hundred and thirty one
- 3:38Speaker 1: players were placed on the reserve COVID list, and that
- 3:40Speaker 1: is despite the fact that we know the NFL has
- 3:42Speaker 1: an absurdly high vaccination rate. December was especially brutal, which
- 3:48Speaker 1: is what everybody's been telling us to expect. Of course,
- 3:51Speaker 1: as the weather gets colder and people are inside. More
- 3:54Speaker 1: six hundred and seventy two players we're on the reserve
- 3:57Speaker 1: COVID nineteen list between December one and December one. God,
- 4:02Speaker 1: I'm just shaking my head thinking about all of those
- 4:04Speaker 1: injury rapports, all of those stories that you and I
- 4:07Speaker 1: have talked about on NFL network of players not being
- 4:10Speaker 1: able to play, but the missing games. In a lot
- 4:12Speaker 1: of ways, we just got to see maybe the most
- 4:15Speaker 1: important position on the football field. I should say maybe
- 4:17Speaker 1: the most important position on the football field. We got
- 4:20Speaker 1: some names and some throwback names in some instances that
- 4:23Speaker 1: I kind of almost forgot. We're still in the league
- 4:27Speaker 1: one sixty two different starting quarterbacks a d sixty two,
- 4:31Speaker 1: and only eleven started all seventeen possible games. All of
- 4:35Speaker 1: those eleven, by the way, except for Trevor Lawrence and
- 4:38Speaker 1: Matt Ryan, had winning records. So clearly, teams that had
- 4:41Speaker 1: their starter all season long they've benefited. And this even
- 4:45Speaker 1: led us to do in a little bit more an
- 4:46Speaker 1: entire episode on backup quarterbacks, which was a whole lot
- 4:49Speaker 1: of fun. And if you miss that, highly encourage you
- 4:52Speaker 1: to check that out, because where else you're going to
- 4:53Speaker 1: get a reference to the Jets and Mike White and
- 4:55Speaker 1: Hush Johnson and Colt McCoy getting some wins for the Cardinals.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And I can't help but forget. I don't want to
- 5:00Speaker 1: forget my guy who used to wear that utah ute uniform,
- 5:03Speaker 1: Tyler Huntley, who actually a d D. You got to
- 5:06Speaker 1: see a whole lot in person in some of the
- 5:07Speaker 1: instances where he got to start with Lamar Jackson, who,
- 5:10Speaker 1: by the way, wasn't protocol, it was actual injuries, right,
- 5:13Speaker 1: And I did get to see a ton of Tyler Huntley.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And you know what, here's a little known fact for
- 5:18Speaker 1: his dynamic and amazing as former m v P Lamar
- 5:22Speaker 1: Jackson is, Tyler Huntley actually did something against the Green
- 5:25Speaker 1: Bay Packers that hadn't been done before by Lamar Jackson. Ever.
- 5:30Speaker 1: He threw for two touchdowns and he ran for two touchdowns.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Add anything else that that strikes you about this past
- 5:36Speaker 1: season that comes to mind. This is such a hard one, Mike,
- 5:39Speaker 1: the way that the Raiders rebounded through this roller coaster
- 5:43Speaker 1: of a year and now we're in the playoffs. The
- 5:45Speaker 1: way that the final Sunday of the season ended, not
- 5:48Speaker 1: just that Raiders Chargers game, but also the Rams forty
- 5:50Speaker 1: Niners and the Steelers Ravens, these rivalry games all going
- 5:54Speaker 1: into overtime and it just felt like they were crazy,
- 5:56Speaker 1: crazy games, especially over the month. But I mean, Aaron
- 6:00Speaker 1: Rodgers once again the presumptive m v P. And forget
- 6:04Speaker 1: like the hosting of Jeopardy and all the vaccination. It's
- 6:09Speaker 1: just simply the fact that the Packers are the number
- 6:11Speaker 1: one seed and one of the Super Bowl favorites, and
- 6:15Speaker 1: it really has to do and most entirely with how
- 6:20Speaker 1: unbelievably dominant Aaron Rodgers is on the field. And Mike,
- 6:23Speaker 1: since this is our records episode, let's go ahead and
- 6:26Speaker 1: hit some of those records that were set this year
- 6:29Speaker 1: by Aaron Rodgers. He had thirteen games this season with
- 6:33Speaker 1: at least two passing touchdowns and no interceptions. That's the
- 6:37Speaker 1: most any player has ever recorded in a season in
- 6:40Speaker 1: NFL history. Here's another one. Aaron Rodgers surpassed Brett Farve
- 6:45Speaker 1: for the most passing touchdowns and Packers history. He did
- 6:49Speaker 1: that Week sixteen versus Cleveland, four hundred and forty five
- 6:54Speaker 1: is what the record was. Aaron Rodgers after Week eighteen
- 6:58Speaker 1: now has four hundred and forty nine. And then here's
- 7:02Speaker 1: one more for the entire Packers team. The Packers became
- 7:05Speaker 1: the first team to win thirteen games in three consecutive seasons.
- 7:11Speaker 1: No NFL team before has done that. It's once again.
- 7:14Speaker 1: And for any of those fans born you know, I
- 7:16Speaker 1: guess what those called two thousand before or after two thousand? Yeah,
- 7:21Speaker 1: that red five guy was actually pretty good. Rogers also
- 7:24Speaker 1: just besting him with some of those numbers. The dv
- 7:26Speaker 1: that you just dropped. But let's take a closer look
- 7:28Speaker 1: at some of the other players who had m v
- 7:30Speaker 1: P type seasons and some records of their own. My guy,
- 7:33Speaker 1: Cooper Cup, little West Coast Love here the receiving triple crown,
- 7:38Speaker 1: leading the league and receptions, yards and TVs. Cup is
- 7:41Speaker 1: actually just the fourth player since nineteen seventy to achieve that.
- 7:46Speaker 1: The other guys pretty good list. Jerry Rice Sterling Sharp
- 7:50Speaker 1: the last guy to do it before Cup, one of
- 7:52Speaker 1: our colleagues Steve Smith, who did it back in two
- 7:54Speaker 1: thousand five with the Panthers. But Cooper actually finished the
- 7:57Speaker 1: regular season second most receptions HDT, second most receiving yards
- 8:03Speaker 1: almost two thousand in a single season in in NFL history.
- 8:07Speaker 1: He also led all receivers with sixteen touchdowns. The dudes
- 8:11Speaker 1: got a nose for the end zone and figures out
- 8:13Speaker 1: ways to concord his body and wiggle his way down
- 8:16Speaker 1: the sidelines and just breakthrough defenders. It really was really special. Now,
- 8:21Speaker 1: one thing adds were and I think it's actually really
- 8:23Speaker 1: interesting to know because we're talking about one. Cup himself
- 8:27Speaker 1: actually had made reference to this. You should know, eighteen
- 8:30Speaker 1: week season, seventeen games season, first in NFL history. So
- 8:33Speaker 1: the records are a little funky here, but Cup actually said,
- 8:36Speaker 1: we're in the longest football season ever played. What the
- 8:39Speaker 1: guys did to set those records in sixteen games, it
- 8:42Speaker 1: wouldn't seem right for those to be broken in seventeen games.
- 8:46Speaker 1: It wouldn't hold the same weight to me as it
- 8:48Speaker 1: does for guys that have done it in a sixteen
- 8:50Speaker 1: game season. And the accomplishments those guys had, the seasons
- 8:53Speaker 1: they put together, those are incredible things. Incredible accomplishments. You
- 8:58Speaker 1: kind of have to separate the two. Who am I
- 9:01Speaker 1: to say that he's wrong? But Adity, I think you know,
- 9:04Speaker 1: you fast forward, I have ten twenty years. I don't
- 9:08Speaker 1: know if we're going to be referencing a longer season
- 9:10Speaker 1: or not, because the reality is the NFL season over
- 9:12Speaker 1: time has changed and we don't necessarily characterize some of
- 9:16Speaker 1: those records accordingly. Well, and that's right. You think about
- 9:18Speaker 1: baseball and the asterisks, and I think that when it's new.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I think it's very fair of Cooper Cup to say this,
- 9:26Speaker 1: and I appreciate that. But as you said, I think
- 9:29Speaker 1: over time all of that sort of softens or we
- 9:33Speaker 1: just don't think about it as much, you know, And look,
- 9:36Speaker 1: even t J Watt, right, let's go back to the top.
- 9:38Speaker 1: He tied Michael Strayhan's record in a season where, yes,
- 9:42Speaker 1: the Steelers did indeed play one more game than Michael
- 9:44Speaker 1: Strahan's Giants did, but t J actually only played in
- 9:50Speaker 1: fifteen games, and even in three of those fifteen he
- 9:54Speaker 1: had to leave early because he was hurt. So I mean,
- 9:58Speaker 1: if you're what are we going to do? Are we
- 10:00Speaker 1: going to sit here and divide numbers by snap counts
- 10:03Speaker 1: and then come up with a number. I think at
- 10:05Speaker 1: some point you just have to say, look, this is
- 10:06Speaker 1: the season, mar right. No, I'm with you. It's a
- 10:08Speaker 1: good point. So let's just go on to some of
- 10:11Speaker 1: the other big names that have broken some records. You
- 10:14Speaker 1: talked about Aaron Rodgers being the goat. I think that
- 10:17Speaker 1: anybody who's ever watched Tom Brady would may be quibble
- 10:19Speaker 1: with that, at least at this moment, especially since this
- 10:21Speaker 1: is a game that is all about winning championships and
- 10:25Speaker 1: Tom Brady is the record breaking machine. So this year,
- 10:28Speaker 1: what are the records that Tom Brady broke. He surpassed
- 10:32Speaker 1: Drew Brees for the most career passing yards right now, Mike,
- 10:37Speaker 1: he sits at eight four thousand, five hundred and twenty.
- 10:40Speaker 1: He also bested Drew Brees for most career completions. At
- 10:45Speaker 1: this current moment, Tom Brady has seven thousand, two hundred
- 10:47Speaker 1: and sixty three completed passes. Brady has now the most
- 10:52Speaker 1: passing yards versus one single opponent. That is no surprise,
- 10:57Speaker 1: Mike the Jets with nine thousand and fifty nine. He
- 11:01Speaker 1: also joined Drew Brees, Brett Farve, and Peyton Manning as
- 11:06Speaker 1: the only quarterbacks in NFL history to beat all thirty
- 11:10Speaker 1: two teams. Brady became the first player in NFL history
- 11:13Speaker 1: to throw for six hundred passing touchdowns. Right now he
- 11:17Speaker 1: has six hundred and twenty four. He also has the
- 11:20Speaker 1: most games with at least three passing touchdowns that's one
- 11:23Speaker 1: hundred and one, and with at least four passing touchdowns
- 11:27Speaker 1: that is thirty nine. And of course, my favorite, favorite,
- 11:31Speaker 1: favorite one is that Tom Brady is the oldest player
- 11:35Speaker 1: in NFL history to pass for five thousand yards and
- 11:40Speaker 1: that is at the ripe old age of forty four.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Although I shouldn't say that, Mike. I think I've said
- 11:44Speaker 1: this to you before. May Tom Brady play forever because
- 11:47Speaker 1: he is older than me, and as long as he
- 11:50Speaker 1: is playing, I can't really feel that old, can I
- 11:53Speaker 1: know you can't. Isn't there like a thing like is
- 11:55Speaker 1: it all peaches and cream with this dude? Like? Is
- 11:57Speaker 1: there anything bad about what Tom Brady does on the
- 11:59Speaker 1: football field? My god, I don't want to sound like
- 12:01Speaker 1: the negative dude, but so interesting you say that, And
- 12:04Speaker 1: you know what, Mike, you sound like Steelers fan who
- 12:06Speaker 1: was like hell bent on just needing something negative about
- 12:09Speaker 1: Tom Brady. There is actually one for the first time
- 12:13Speaker 1: in fifteen years. Tom Brady was actually shut out when
- 12:19Speaker 1: the Bucks lost to the Saints nine nothing in Week fifteen.
- 12:23Speaker 1: It broke a streak of two hundred and fifty five
- 12:26Speaker 1: consecutive starts without a shutout. But you know, this episode,
- 12:32Speaker 1: we're focusing, Mike on records that are broken this year,
- 12:36Speaker 1: this season. I feel it's only fair that we do
- 12:40Speaker 1: mention that Brady already holds the record for most touchdowns
- 12:43Speaker 1: and wins, and we're not even talking about the playoffs
- 12:47Speaker 1: or Super Bowl records here, Mike. We could probably do
- 12:50Speaker 1: a whole NFL explained on every mark that Tom Brady
- 12:54Speaker 1: has ever said and what is probably never going to
- 12:57Speaker 1: be threatened ever, every every So how about you're gonna
- 13:00Speaker 1: make this deal with me and just say yes, even
- 13:02Speaker 1: if you disagree in fifteen years, when we're still doing
- 13:05Speaker 1: this podcast and Tom Brady decides to retire in fifteen years,
- 13:09Speaker 1: we will do it an exclusive Tom Brady record podcast.
- 13:16Speaker 1: At that point, I think it'll be fair to say
- 13:18Speaker 1: that Tom Brady holds the most records for of any category.
- 13:21Speaker 1: It'll be Tom Brady's name, and we'll just dedicate a
- 13:23Speaker 1: whole episode of NF will explain to him. Just because
- 13:26Speaker 1: of that, there's some other dudes that also stood out. Well,
- 13:29Speaker 1: you know, frankly, I'm a girl who likes to run
- 13:31Speaker 1: the ball as opposed to right and especially as we
- 13:34Speaker 1: get to this weather, and so let's get into some
- 13:37Speaker 1: of that. You got any running records for me? Oh yeah,
- 13:39Speaker 1: there was a dude who was pretty good who I
- 13:41Speaker 1: thought was in the m v P conversation for most
- 13:44Speaker 1: of the season. It's Jonathan Taylor the Cults They're back,
- 13:47Speaker 1: was tremendous youngest player. And we're talking about Brady being
- 13:50Speaker 1: one of the oldest dudes and some of those records.
- 13:52Speaker 1: How about what Taylor was able to accomplish youngest player
- 13:55Speaker 1: with at least two thousand yards from scrimmage and at
- 13:57Speaker 1: least twenty touchdowns. The dude is twenty two years old.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Kind of crazy when you consider the success he's had
- 14:03Speaker 1: already from a cult perspective. Single season rushing yard record
- 14:07Speaker 1: he now owns it. Single season scrimmage touchdown record, he
- 14:11Speaker 1: owns that as well, and actually tie one of our
- 14:14Speaker 1: colleagues with Danian Tomlinson, like Eel Mitchell, also for the
- 14:16Speaker 1: consecutive games mark with eight with at least a hundred
- 14:20Speaker 1: yards from scrimmage and one rushing touchdown. That is a
- 14:23Speaker 1: really good company for him to be in. So a
- 14:26Speaker 1: little bit of love to Jonathan Taylor and what he
- 14:28Speaker 1: was able to accomplish, But a d D. I think
- 14:30Speaker 1: we are off to a fast start, not as fast
- 14:32Speaker 1: as Jonathan Taylor on the football field. I think we've
- 14:35Speaker 1: actually covered some of the biggest stories of the season.
- 14:37Speaker 1: But when we come back, we're going to cover some
- 14:39Speaker 1: more record breaking numbers from the one campaign and get
- 14:43Speaker 1: into some of the more bizarre records that have been set,
- 14:46Speaker 1: like which college currently has a twenty four game losing
- 14:49Speaker 1: streak with their quarterbacks in the NFL. The answer is

- 16:29Speaker 1: yards on tw it boxes off the place calls oh
- 16:44Speaker 1: dif just happy, grand want a check, welcome back to NFL, explained,
- 16:51Speaker 1: I can't help but smile as I listened to that ball.
- 16:54Speaker 1: That was, of course, Week three one, Justin Tucker nailing
- 16:58Speaker 1: a sixty six yard game winning field goal against the Lions,
- 17:03Speaker 1: setting the record for the longest field goal of all time,
- 17:06Speaker 1: bounced off the crossbar and through and Mike. That happened
- 17:11Speaker 1: a week after he was our very first guest on
- 17:14Speaker 1: this podcast when we were talking about all things upright
- 17:18Speaker 1: related field goal related to be fair, not just upright.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I want to throw something in your way. And I
- 17:23Speaker 1: don't know if you view uh field goals differently after
- 17:26Speaker 1: our conversation with Tucker, because I do, because I know
- 17:28Speaker 1: we were talking about the uprights on that episode, but
- 17:31Speaker 1: Justin also went through some of the fraumatics and the
- 17:33Speaker 1: science behind some of the kicks. He didn't do a
- 17:35Speaker 1: deep dive, but I find myself now every time there's
- 17:37Speaker 1: a field goal kicker lining up to just watch every
- 17:40Speaker 1: single moment. And there's one thing about that Tucker field
- 17:42Speaker 1: goal that I just will never forget, just that little
- 17:45Speaker 1: hop step before he takes off to get a little
- 17:48Speaker 1: bit of extra momentum, like he never does that, and
- 17:51Speaker 1: I've never seen anyone else do it as well. And
- 17:53Speaker 1: it was good enough for that ball to go through
- 17:55Speaker 1: the uprights with a little bit of help because Tucker
- 17:57Speaker 1: did say there's no uprights. He's necessarily more fond of
- 18:01Speaker 1: in the NFL. But when you get help like that,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I would be popular in your mind compared to some
- 18:05Speaker 1: of the other one ones. But I do want to
- 18:06Speaker 1: continue on. Well, let's yeah, let's stick in the a
- 18:09Speaker 1: f C North. Actually, okay, so how about this, because
- 18:11Speaker 1: we were once again loving up an older Tom Brady
- 18:13Speaker 1: at the quarterback spot. I want a little bit younger
- 18:15Speaker 1: with Jonathan Taylor. But another quarterback for you, Joe Burrow
- 18:19Speaker 1: Week sixteen, weeks seventeen. In fact, I was actually working
- 18:22Speaker 1: Sunday of weeks seventeen, and we're obviously coming off a
- 18:26Speaker 1: Joe Burrow performance which was amazing against Baltimore and then
- 18:29Speaker 1: what he did against Kansas, and I was in the
- 18:30Speaker 1: stadium for that one. You were in the stadium for
- 18:32Speaker 1: that one, so you know what I'm talking about here.
- 18:34Speaker 1: But Burrows set the NFL record for the first time
- 18:37Speaker 1: a player has had back to back games of four
- 18:39Speaker 1: hundred plus passing yards and at least four passing touchdowns
- 18:43Speaker 1: with no picks. The dude was on fire, burrowing the
- 18:47Speaker 1: Bengals rounding it to form probably a d D at
- 18:49Speaker 1: the right time. Would you consider we're knocking on the
- 18:51Speaker 1: door of the playoffs and potentially a little bit of
- 18:54Speaker 1: a run here from a Cincinnati squad. But this is
- 18:57Speaker 1: will be back at Paul Brown Stadium this weekend to
- 19:00Speaker 1: be a whole lot of fun. Borrow does it against
- 19:02Speaker 1: the Raiders? Right? No, I'm with you. There's also some
- 19:04Speaker 1: staples right on the fensive side that you just kind
- 19:06Speaker 1: of anticipate. We're always going to put up big numbers.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Aaron Donald comes to mind. Four straight seasons with twelve
- 19:13Speaker 1: plus sacks. That's the second longest streak in NFL history.
- 19:16Speaker 1: And give me the young fellow Micah Parsons thirteen sacks
- 19:20Speaker 1: and had he been healthy enough to be able to play,
- 19:22Speaker 1: maybe we could have added to that total in that
- 19:24Speaker 1: last game of the regular season. But thirteen sacks ties
- 19:28Speaker 1: for the third most by a rookie in NFL history,
- 19:30Speaker 1: And who knows if he didn't test positive for COVID
- 19:34Speaker 1: and was able to play in the last game of
- 19:35Speaker 1: the regular season. That actually might have been fourteen sacks
- 19:38Speaker 1: or fifteen, because he's that much of a monster. All right, Well,
- 19:41Speaker 1: speaking of rookies, let's go to the rocky pass catchers.
- 19:43Speaker 1: You mentioned Joe Burrow at the top, so of course
- 19:46Speaker 1: Joe Burrow's favorite receiver was his old L s U
- 19:49Speaker 1: teammate Jamar Chase. Well, Chase not only said a Bengals
- 19:54Speaker 1: franchise record for most receiving yards, he also set a
- 19:58Speaker 1: record for the most receiving yards in a game by
- 20:02Speaker 1: a rookie, and that's an NFL record two d and
- 20:05Speaker 1: sixty six yards versus Kansas City Week seventeen, jail and waddle.
- 20:11Speaker 1: He suppressed on Quan Bolden for the most receptions by
- 20:15Speaker 1: a rookie in NFL history, the Dolphins Turkie had one
- 20:18Speaker 1: hundred and four. And then the first rookie tight end
- 20:21Speaker 1: with a thousand receiving yards Atlanta's Kyle Pitts. No one's
- 20:26Speaker 1: ever done that in the Super Bowl era? How about that,
- 20:28Speaker 1: which is pretty amazing. Here's another one. I'll throw this
- 20:30Speaker 1: one out there just because it's you know, the Lions,
- 20:32Speaker 1: and it was a tough year and I got to
- 20:34Speaker 1: talk to this young man this year Amon Ross st Brown. Lovely, lovely,
- 20:38Speaker 1: lovely young man. You can see he's going to turn
- 20:40Speaker 1: into a real leader. Well with his performance against Green
- 20:44Speaker 1: Bay at the end of the season, he bested Lions
- 20:48Speaker 1: former first round pick Roy Williams with eight hundred and
- 20:52Speaker 1: seventeen yards in his rookie season. That is a Lions
- 20:55Speaker 1: franchise record. Sc Fans are like, yo, fight on. We
- 20:58Speaker 1: saw this from him and we knew he'd be this good.
- 21:00Speaker 1: He has been terrific for that Detroit team. One of
- 21:03Speaker 1: those bright spots the TV that you made reference to
- 21:06Speaker 1: already mentioned Jonathan Taylor. A couple other super sophomores entered
- 21:10Speaker 1: the record books as well. How about we throw out
- 21:13Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson's name. I still think back as I closed
- 21:17Speaker 1: my eyes, I can imagine and see him on the
- 21:18Speaker 1: football field with the Odell Beckham T shirt on. I
- 21:23Speaker 1: was able to surpass O b J for the most
- 21:25Speaker 1: receiving yards in a player's first two seasons, just over
- 21:29Speaker 1: three thousand. What a big number there, and Justin Herbert
- 21:33Speaker 1: one of the nice guys passing Andrew Luck most passing
- 21:36Speaker 1: yards in a player's first two seasons. All those Haymaker throws.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Herbert certainly d able to to rack up some yardage
- 21:43Speaker 1: numbers just because of some of those long bombs. All right, well,
- 21:45Speaker 1: how about the leaders? How about the coaches. Bill Belichick
- 21:48Speaker 1: ties Don Shula for the most ten win seasons by
- 21:52Speaker 1: an NFL head coach, with twenty. He did that Week
- 21:55Speaker 1: seventeen versus Jacksonville. The first head coach to win one
- 21:59Speaker 1: hundred games with more than one franchise, well, that became
- 22:03Speaker 1: Andy Reid. He won a hundred, of course with the Eagles.
- 22:05Speaker 1: In Week fourteen of this year, he won his one
- 22:08Speaker 1: with the Kansas City Chiefs. And then, of course there's
- 22:11Speaker 1: Matt Lafleur. He's thirty nine and ten in his first
- 22:15Speaker 1: three seasons as a head coach. That seventy nine point
- 22:18Speaker 1: six win percentage is the highest in the NFL since
- 22:22Speaker 1: the start of the two thousand nineteen season, and the
- 22:25Speaker 1: highest in the NFL history for any head coach that
- 22:29Speaker 1: has coached five games. Nice to have Aaron Rodgers on
- 22:31Speaker 1: your team right when your first time head coach. There
- 22:34Speaker 1: is that for sure. And let me tell you that
- 22:36Speaker 1: Zach Taylor, another young coach who was hired at the
- 22:39Speaker 1: same time as la fleur. He had two very rough
- 22:42Speaker 1: first season, six wins in those first two seasons, but
- 22:45Speaker 1: you got Joe Burrow and a healthy Joe Burrow. Everything's
- 22:49Speaker 1: changed this year. Yeah, quarterback position, oh so important. Do
- 22:55Speaker 1: we also add had some close games. Heason actually started
- 22:57Speaker 1: with the Bucks just taking out the Cowboys Thursday Night
- 23:00Speaker 1: Football ended with that insane thirty five to overtime win
- 23:07Speaker 1: for the Raiders over the Chargers. A time out called
- 23:10Speaker 1: that I think will forever be synonymous with that Chargers team,
- 23:14Speaker 1: and hopefully they'll be able to write the ship in
- 23:16Speaker 1: the next couple of years, and that Steelers fans will
- 23:19Speaker 1: forever be grateful for because remember, the Raiders needed to
- 23:23Speaker 1: win that game or the Chargers somebody needed to win.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Had there been a tie, the Steelers would no longer
- 23:28Speaker 1: be in the playoffs. So there were a lot of
- 23:31Speaker 1: fan bases, very very invested in what happened in that game. Oddly,
- 23:34Speaker 1: and I Mike Tomlin dozing off at the end of
- 23:37Speaker 1: that game, so he claims, so he claims that one.
- 23:41Speaker 1: But you know what, Mike, I don't think this is anecdotal.
- 23:43Speaker 1: We talked about the Ravens playing so many close games
- 23:45Speaker 1: earlier well, Mike, you know what, it's not just anecdotal.
- 23:49Speaker 1: We talked about the Ravens playing so many close games.
- 23:52Speaker 1: We've talked a lot, at least I have talked a
- 23:54Speaker 1: lot about the Steelers kind of engineering game winning drives,
- 23:58Speaker 1: specifically Ben Roethlisberger, who, by the way, is second all
- 24:01Speaker 1: time in history in terms of engineering game winning drives,
- 24:03Speaker 1: second to Tom Brady. But they season, there were actually
- 24:08Speaker 1: more games decided by a winning score on the final
- 24:12Speaker 1: play of the game than in any other single season
- 24:15Speaker 1: in NFL history. Thirty five games, Mike decided on the
- 24:20Speaker 1: final play of the game. I mean, that's insane, right,
- 24:24Speaker 1: There's so many moments just watching at home or at work.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I'm going you gotta be kidding me. I mean even
- 24:29Speaker 1: sometimes thea looked like the game was gonna be over
- 24:31Speaker 1: and you just didn't really give the other team a
- 24:33Speaker 1: chance to really make that run late, and then they did.
- 24:35Speaker 1: All right, Mike, But before we say goodbye to everybody,
- 24:37Speaker 1: let's go through some of the really fun records broken
- 24:41Speaker 1: in season. Twelve players this year who waited at least
- 24:46Speaker 1: three hundred pounds scored a touchdown, and Week sixteen, four
- 24:51Speaker 1: of them did it. In one single day. That's the
- 24:54Speaker 1: most in NFL history. Never before in NFL history have
- 24:58Speaker 1: four three hundred plus pounders scored a touchdown on one day.
- 25:03Speaker 1: That was Dallas is Terence Steele, the Jets, Connor McDermott,
- 25:08Speaker 1: the Eagles, Lane Johnson, and Jacksonville's Will Richardson. Okay, legit,
- 25:14Speaker 1: when you said all of those three pound guys, I
- 25:17Speaker 1: only knew one, and maybe most fans didn't know any
- 25:20Speaker 1: of them, or maybe the die hard ones that were watching,
- 25:22Speaker 1: you know what happened to be a Dallas fan or
- 25:24Speaker 1: Jets fan or Philly Farner Jack they would have known.
- 25:26Speaker 1: But I got to cover Connor McDermott when he was
- 25:28Speaker 1: in college at u c l A. I saw it.
- 25:31Speaker 1: I went nuts at home because he's like the nicest
- 25:34Speaker 1: dude ever. And actually one of our producers is a
- 25:36Speaker 1: Jets fan, and just because of that, we just thought
- 25:39Speaker 1: we would play the audio board and the fullback is
- 25:42Speaker 1: in fake from Wilson. Here they come Rolston to the ends, tuchsdown,
- 25:50Speaker 1: Tony mcderbot going there for the Jets. So much fun
- 25:55Speaker 1: to see those kind of plays to do right, it
- 26:01Speaker 1: was awesome. It was awesome. Also awesome to hear my
- 26:04Speaker 1: college buddy spireaud this on the call on that one
- 26:07Speaker 1: um a d D. You know, I actually teased this
- 26:09Speaker 1: a little bit earlier, and I actually knew the answer
- 26:12Speaker 1: because I was working with one of our friends and
- 26:14Speaker 1: colleagues and Lewis, I was hosting a radio show with him,
- 26:16Speaker 1: and he threw this question out to me as a
- 26:19Speaker 1: trivia question, and I was ashamed because I can only
- 26:22Speaker 1: name two quarterbacks that could have been in the mix.
- 26:24Speaker 1: So I actually got it right, but that's just by
- 26:27Speaker 1: dumb luck. So I threw out this question about Notre
- 26:29Speaker 1: Dame quarterbacks and a d D one Ian book started
- 26:32Speaker 1: at QB for the Saints a Monday at football in
- 26:34Speaker 1: Week sixteen and lost. It was the four consecutive loss
- 26:39Speaker 1: for a Notre Dame quarterback in the NFL, which is
- 26:42Speaker 1: mind boggling. And here's some of the guys Ian book
- 26:44Speaker 1: Seawan Kaiser, Jimmy Clawson's one of those guys. Brady Quinn
- 26:48Speaker 1: the other one. So Red had asked me, He's like,
- 26:51Speaker 1: who's the last one to get a win? So I
- 26:52Speaker 1: was like, oh, maybe it's Jimmy, maybe it's Brady Quinn.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I went with Brady Quinn but it was Brady Quinn
- 26:58Speaker 1: and I actually had forgotten that he wore that Kansas
- 27:00Speaker 1: City uniform beat Cam Newton's Carolina squad back in twelve.
- 27:06Speaker 1: It is wild. Oh it's my birthday. I remember that,
- 27:11Speaker 1: So you remember that exact moment. You're probably on a
- 27:13Speaker 1: football field somewhere covering a game on your birthday, knowing you.
- 27:16Speaker 1: But this is kind of wild. Notre Dame starting quarterbacks
- 27:19Speaker 1: during that game, losing streak, completion percentage, fifteen touchdown passes.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Oh dd, this is what's going to get it thirty
- 27:30Speaker 1: two picks. Well, here's another little lah fighting Irish nugget.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Before Tom Brady, a Michigan man came along, Notre Dame
- 27:40Speaker 1: actually had the most Super Bowl wins of any college
- 27:43Speaker 1: and that's because of Joe Montana and Joe Siseman, who incidentally,
- 27:47Speaker 1: when he was growing up in South River, New Jersey,
- 27:50Speaker 1: his name was pronounced Joe Theisman, and it's when he
- 27:53Speaker 1: went to Notre Dame and they wanted his name to
- 27:56Speaker 1: rhyme with Heisman that it became Oh good, No, I
- 28:01Speaker 1: didn't know that story. South River, New Jersey is right
- 28:04Speaker 1: next to East Brunswick, New Jersey, which is where I
- 28:06Speaker 1: grew up, so you know, these are things we just learned. Yeah,
- 28:09Speaker 1: things that you get on the NFL Explained podcast. That's
- 28:11Speaker 1: a bonus nugget for you fans and Cincinnati a DT.
- 28:14Speaker 1: They've had some up and down moments over the years.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Coming up here on the NFL Explain podcasts, I will
- 28:20Speaker 1: give you a nugget that will have every fan who
- 28:23Speaker 1: wears a Bangles jersey smiling ear to ear. That's coming
- 28:26Speaker 1: up on the NFL Explain pod. This podcast is sponsored

- 29:26Speaker 1: the NFL Explained Podcast, Mike Yam and indeed Kinkoboala with you.
- 29:29Speaker 1: All right, let's just continue jumping into some of these records.
- 29:31Speaker 1: All right, here's another bonus one. And I hate to
- 29:33Speaker 1: do this one as having grown up as a Giants
- 29:35Speaker 1: fan who wants to give roses to the Cowboys, But
- 29:38Speaker 1: we have to give roses to Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott
- 29:41Speaker 1: because week sixteen, he threw touchdown passes to a running
- 29:46Speaker 1: back Ezekiel Elliott, a tight end Dalton Schultz, an offensive
- 29:50Speaker 1: lineman Terrence Steele, and a wide receiver Amari Cooper. This
- 29:55Speaker 1: happened one time before, and it was our colleague and friend, who,
- 29:58Speaker 1: of course has also been one of our podcast guests,
- 30:00Speaker 1: Kurt Warner, who did it in got it done in
- 30:03Speaker 1: the playoffs. Speaking of getting get done in the playoffs,
- 30:06Speaker 1: my guy Rob Gronkowski got to give him some love,
- 30:09Speaker 1: passing Tony Gonzalez for the most career one hundred yard
- 30:12Speaker 1: games by a tight end in NFL history thirty two
- 30:16Speaker 1: of them at DV thirty two. That's just wild to me.
- 30:21Speaker 1: How about this one. You know who the first quarterback
- 30:23Speaker 1: is with a rushing touchdown in the first five games
- 30:26Speaker 1: he played, Uh, I'm back, Cam Newton. Cam Newton rejoined
- 30:31Speaker 1: the Panthers mid season and in his first five games back,
- 30:36Speaker 1: each of them featured a rushing touchdown and he was yelling,
- 30:40Speaker 1: I'm back, I'm back, which was kind of cool, except
- 30:43Speaker 1: that he went oh and five in those games. We
- 30:45Speaker 1: don't have to talk about that. So let's just let's
- 30:46Speaker 1: just take let's keep this thing positive here longest, all right?
- 30:49Speaker 1: We had the NFL had it's it's biggest season ever,
- 30:52Speaker 1: the longest day of football in the last fifty years,
- 30:54Speaker 1: from the London kickoff. If you missed our international show,
- 30:57Speaker 1: you gotta go back and check that one out. But
- 30:59Speaker 1: the London kickoff to the end of the Sunday night
- 31:01Speaker 1: football game fifteen hours and one minute back on October
- 31:06Speaker 1: t roller coaster of a day. Let me tell you
- 31:11Speaker 1: you know who else had a roller coaster of a season.
- 31:14Speaker 1: The Dolphins. They lost seven straight games and they also
- 31:18Speaker 1: won seven straight games. Talk about streaky. But can we
- 31:21Speaker 1: go to the guys that I spent a lot of
- 31:23Speaker 1: time with this year, one of them being rookie running
- 31:26Speaker 1: back Naji Harris. He of course was the Steeler's first
- 31:29Speaker 1: round pick, and I tweeted this the other day, three
- 31:32Speaker 1: hundred and eighty one touches without a single fumble. I
- 31:38Speaker 1: do have to say, Mike that when I tweeted this,
- 31:39Speaker 1: I said, because I'm sure Naji Harris doesn't believe in jinxes.
- 31:43Speaker 1: And then I share that that he is a first
- 31:46Speaker 1: rookie in NFL history to have three hundred rushes, to
- 31:50Speaker 1: have seventy receptions. He definitely got stronger as the year
- 31:54Speaker 1: went on, and every time we tried to talk to
- 31:57Speaker 1: him about his body hurting or what was going on,
- 31:59Speaker 1: he said, I am built for this. I train for this.
- 32:04Speaker 1: And then, of course, the guy who's most great full
- 32:06Speaker 1: that he had Nagi Harris on his team is Big
- 32:09Speaker 1: Ben Roethlisberger, who at some point is going to complete
- 32:12Speaker 1: his eighteenth season. You know, we said goodbye to him
- 32:15Speaker 1: in this epic Monday Night against the Browns at Hines
- 32:17Speaker 1: Field and then what was supposed to be his final
- 32:19Speaker 1: start in Baltimore, except the Steelers engineer this overtime when
- 32:24Speaker 1: over their rival Ravens, and then, as you talked about
- 32:27Speaker 1: earlier in the show, the Raiders kicked that game winning
- 32:29Speaker 1: field goal. And so now Ben Roethlisberger has at least
- 32:32Speaker 1: one more game against Kansas City. Whenever he does hang
- 32:35Speaker 1: it up, it will be the longest tenure for any
- 32:39Speaker 1: quarterback in NFL history with just one team. So he
- 32:44Speaker 1: has been a stealer from day one to whatever the
- 32:47Speaker 1: final day is now. Kicker Lou Groza did play twenty
- 32:52Speaker 1: one seasons with just one team, but he's a kicker,
- 32:54Speaker 1: not a quarterback, So there you go. The distinction there,
- 32:58Speaker 1: all right. I'm gonna leave everyone with this one. I
- 33:00Speaker 1: know we loved Joe Burrow. I want to give Cincinnati
- 33:03Speaker 1: fans even more reason for often miss him. The Bengals
- 33:07Speaker 1: first team in NFL history to have a four thousand
- 33:10Speaker 1: yard passer, a one thousand yard rusher, and two one
- 33:14Speaker 1: thousand yard receivers, all twenty five or younger in the
- 33:18Speaker 1: same season, Burrow, Mix and Chase Higgins. They got themselves
- 33:22Speaker 1: a nice little offensive core, a d D And with that,
- 33:26Speaker 1: I think we can kind of drop the mic on
- 33:28Speaker 1: the records right for the season for now, But you know,
- 33:31Speaker 1: the playoffs are just starting, so we may come back,
- 33:34Speaker 1: so we'll do a playoff edition. I'm still looking for
- 33:36Speaker 1: that episode on Tom Brady. Fifteen years from now, when
- 33:38Speaker 1: you retires me and you another edition. We may be retired.
- 33:43Speaker 1: We may be pushed a pastor by then, but not
- 33:46Speaker 1: Tom Brady. It's been a hack of a season. I'll
- 33:49Speaker 1: tell you this. I certainly appreciated the extra game. I'm
- 33:52Speaker 1: all about more football, and we have more football in
- 33:55Speaker 1: this playoff weekend. It's an amped up super wild Card weekend.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I hope everyone enjoys that weekend of football that a
- 34:01Speaker 1: d D made reference to enjoy the postseason. And of course,
- 34:04Speaker 1: if you've missed any of our fun episodes of the
