- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the Iron Team series and your daily influence.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: Today we are going to be talking about the role that accountability has in achieving success.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: And being held accountable does help us to achieve success.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: gives us some measurement how we're doing and give us some push sometimes when we're not fulfilling the obligations that we've agreed to fulfill to reach certain goals in our areas of influence.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: I want to walk us through how accountability is a pillar of trust and teamwork in that.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's foundational element of trust within teams that people are going to get things done.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: And when people take ownership of the responsibilities,
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: It fosters that environment where trust can thrive, trust is the bedrock of effective teamwork, meaning that holding oneself accountable or being accountable will lead to better collaboration, better communication and ultimately success because people will work together if they trust together.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: encouraging your team members and yourself for that matter to hold yourself at each other accountable can be a positive thing.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: Accountability isn't a way to punish, isn't a way to create negativity.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's a way to measure and away to motivate and away to check
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: If you fail, if you hold yourself accountable to the failure, it's okay if you fail but still move past the failure towards improvement to reach whatever goals you have individually or collectively.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: And when you have shared accountability, it strengthens the team's unity and will drive collective success.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: another part of accountability that can be used or something that can be used to help you stay accountable and manage accountability as smart management.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: And that's through using measured goals.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: If you can tie accountability directly to setting clear measurable goals and setting up
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: Then within your area of influence, having a smart management mentality, a smart accountability, will help you to reach and stay on that road to success.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: And if you don't recall or if you're new to a smart is specific, measurable, achievable.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: relevant and timely.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: And we use these to help us to communicate better sent proper goals, create and pivot into proper tactics and manage our data day lives.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: A practical application of this is implementing regular check-ins and reviews where the milestones within our goals as we are tactically engaged to reach them are revisited.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_00]: and accountability is reinforced.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: If people are missing the mark, we need to be asking questions as to why.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: That's the accountability.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: Getting good answers, not justification, but good answers to why people might be missing.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: There may be something from smart that was missing.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: There may be
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: something outside of this current area of influence.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not talking about excuses.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm talking about real interruptions, real conflict that gets in the way of success sometimes.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: And understanding how those conflicts, how those disruptions can get in the way of goals and tactics is a part of the accountability process.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's a part of understanding
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: When we have this smart approach and communicate in a smart way, we can use these distractions.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: We can use this information about our failures to learn how accountability can be part of our continuous improvement.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: Personal accountability is really, really important in organizational culture.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: are taught to trust and hold themselves and their team members accountable in a way that isn't emotional, but that is in the spirit of improvement, in the spirit of success.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: Then what we have as an organizational culture that's built on responsibility, integrity, and excellence.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: If this is part of your core values, then the accountability is upholding them, that's what accountability is, is upholding those core values, holding us accountable to what we agree is going to be the way that we conduct ourselves in that we behave.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: The practical application of that is demonstrating that personal accountability,
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: how you held yourself accountable, what you did, how you identified the issue, how you worked through the issue, created the improvement, and moved back into the tactics to reach the goal.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: Now, when you share that with each other and you learn from each other's accountability in the way that you tackle these issues, you grow together.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: And this organizational culture, accountability becomes part of it, a core value of that culture.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: This also means
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: balancing accountability with empathy and support, because there are things that will get in the way of people.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: There are things that will get in the way of our policies and procedures into the mix of our tactics and disrupt our path to reach our goals.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: What's important is that while we hold people accountable and it's critical to do that,
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: Failure can become very emotional.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: I can get people down.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: It can destroy morale.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: Not just for the person who is failing, but for the people who rely on them.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: Tackling that emotion with empathy and balancing that empathy was support to understand what the failure was, how to help improve whatever cause the failure or if you if there's nothing to be improved.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's something that happened.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: outside of the organization that is causing a disruption and supporting them through that disruption, supporting them through whatever it is that's causing the issues will move us in the right direction.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's still accountability, but it's also teamwork and it is supporting this culture of accountability and excellence that we get from these environments.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: And as you've heard me just
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: as part of the accountability process means we're going to have continuous improvement by encouraging reflection on past performance, encouraging learning from our success and our failures.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: The smart management approach advocates for regular debriefs and lessons learned during sessions that identify specifically for areas of improvement and those areas of improvement
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: People can be held accountable for whatever part they play in the areas that need to be improved.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: They can help bring context to those things, talk about their experience through the improvement and the failure, and also help implement that improvement so that the changes are positive in movies in the right direction.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: So if you can use accountability as part of your continuous improvement
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: conduct reviews, assess with each other what works, what doesn't work, talk about them, and then learn how you can apply those lessons to goal setting and tactic development in a smart way for the future.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: Hope today's discussion on accountability and achieving success will help you through your days and working with your teams and develop a culture of continuous improvement and accountability for your organization.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: I look forward to talking to you again and I hope you have a great day.
