- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday.
- 0:15It's the 17th of July. Great to have your company
- 0:19today. Today we move into another area.
- 0:23This is fascinating. So you know how when you enter a
- 0:26new kind of area in your life, you start to learn all these
- 0:29things that you never even considered before?
- 0:32Well, when you enter the world of army chaplaincy, all of a
- 0:35sudden you start to think about army kind of things like war,
- 0:38kind of things like just war theory or ethical behaviour in
- 0:43war, morality in warfare. What do all these things look
- 0:47like? And there is so much doctrine
- 0:50that the Australian Defence Force has and that the UN has
- 0:53developed and that The Hague has handed down to us, so that when
- 0:58the inevitable happens and nations engage in warfare, that
- 1:01the laws of armed conflict will be followed.
- 1:04And as Moses continues to pick apart what it looks like not to
- 1:08murder, how does this look in the field of warfare?
- 1:12And that is exactly what he addresses in today's chapter
- 1:16because you know if you have read much of the Old Testament
- 1:19that there is a whole lot of battling that goes on as God's
- 1:22people take that land. So let us unwrap this complex
- 1:27little beast and see what God's wisdom is at that time through
- 1:31Moses for His people, as we read together Deuteronomy chapter 20.
- 1:46When you go out to fight your enemies and you face horses and
- 1:50Chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid.
- 1:55The Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is
- 1:58with you. When you prepare for battle, the
- 2:02priest must come forward to speak to the troops.
- 2:05He will say to them, Listen to me, all you men of Israel, do
- 2:10not be afraid as you go out to fight your enemies today.
- 2:13Do not lose heart or panic or tremble before them, for the
- 2:17Lord your God is going with you. He will fight for you against
- 2:22your enemies, and He will give you victory.
- 2:25Then the officers of the army must address the troops and say,
- 2:29has anyone here just built a new house but not yet dedicated it?
- 2:34If so, you may go home. You might be killed in the
- 2:38battle and someone else would dedicate your house.
- 2:41Has anyone here just planted a vineyard but not eaten any of
- 2:45its fruit? If so, you may go home.
- 2:48You might die in battle and someone else would eat the first
- 2:51fruit. Has anyone here just become
- 2:54engaged to a woman but not yet married her?
- 2:58Well, you may go home and get married.
- 3:00You might die in the battle and someone else would marry her.
- 3:04Then the officers will also say, Is anyone here afraid or
- 3:09worried? If you are, you may go home
- 3:12before you frighten anyone else. When the officers have finished
- 3:16speaking to their troops, they will appoint the unit
- 3:19commanders. As you approach a town to attack
- 3:23it, you must first offer its people terms for peace.
- 3:27If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all
- 3:31the people inside will serve you in forced labour.
- 3:34But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must
- 3:38attack the town when the Lord your God hands the town over to
- 3:43you. Use your swords to kill every
- 3:45man in the town that you may keep for yourself all the women,
- 3:50children, livestock, and other plunder.
- 3:52You may enjoy the plunder from your enemies that the Lord your
- 3:55God has given you. But these instructions apply
- 3:59only to distant towns, not to the towns of the nations in the
- 4:03land. You will enter in those towns
- 4:06that the Lord your God is giving you as a special possession.
- 4:09Destroy every living thing. You must completely destroy the
- 4:13Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and
- 4:19Jebusites, just as the Lord your God has commanded you.
- 4:23This will prevent the people of the land from teaching you to
- 4:26imitate their detestable customs in the worship of their gods,
- 4:30which would cause you to sin deeply against the Lord your
- 4:33God. When you were attacking a town
- 4:37and the war drags on, you must not cut down the trees with your
- 4:41axes. You may eat the fruit, but do
- 4:44not cut down the trees. Are the trees your enemies that
- 4:48you should attack them? You may only cut down trees that
- 4:51you know are not valuable for food.
- 4:54Use them to make the equipment you need to attack the enemy
- 4:57town until it falls. Our Lord, life can be full and
- 5:12complex, and we encounter situations that don't seem to
- 5:18fit very neatly into the Christian life or the life of of
- 5:23a disciple of yours. But here, Jesus, we see that
- 5:27even in the midst of the darkest situations, there are still ways
- 5:33that we can operate with justice and in a way that brings you
- 5:39glory. Lord, I pray that you continue
- 5:43to shape our hearts so that when we encounter difficult
- 5:47situations, situations that seem far from black and far from
- 5:50white, that it is your wisdom and your Kingdom priorities that
- 5:55would lead us through. Make us your agents of love and
- 6:02justice and peace and wholeness in this world, so that people
- 6:08can see the way that we behave and that we can point them to
- 6:12you and your greater rule, how we love you and we rededicate
- 6:17ourselves to you as living sacrifices.
- 6:21We pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
