- 1:19morning so I'm not even sure what day
- 1:21it is hour time whatever like it's fine
- 1:26I was telling Corey before we got on
- 1:27the air, I do system testing,
- 1:31and today we launched a new system test,
- 1:34and they decided to put it on a
- 1:35brand-new platform for the first time,
- 1:38and it's the biggest system test we've
- 1:40done this year, and, of course,
- 1:43none of it is working.
- 1:46So I'm just writing tickets left and
- 1:48right.
- 1:49I'm like a traffic cop on Ventura
- 1:53Boulevard.
- 1:56a ticket and you get a ticket and
- 1:57you get a ticket uh hexi lover it's
- 2:04louisiana hot in jersey ninety five
- 2:06degrees it's actually hotter there than it
- 2:08is here only it's about eighty seven
- 2:12outside right now but the humidity is
- 2:14about two hundred percent so yeah i uh
- 2:17sweating this morning from my workout

- 2:22down

- 2:25working when i left this morning uh but
- 2:28the noon coach was like hey the big
- 2:30ass fan just quit working which everybody
- 2:33in here if you've been to a box
- 2:34you should know what a big ass fan
- 2:35is unless you got one of those fancy
- 2:37boxes that got air conditioning and we
- 2:39don't play that around here uh when i
- 2:41was a polaris we had two big ass
- 2:42fans and no air conditioning yeah they're
- 2:46the best

- 3:11a fancy lunch
- 3:14Uh, just Ramirez says, uh,
- 3:16it's moist out here in DC as well.
- 3:19It's Andrea moistness in DC.
- 3:22It is.
- 3:24Yeah.
- 3:24I work from home all the time and
- 3:25I don't ever get a fancy lunch whenever
- 3:27I go there.
- 3:28Just throwing that out there.
- 3:32We do the home chef meal kit.
- 3:34I ain't gonna lie.
- 3:36And that's one of the kits that came
- 3:37in this week.
- 3:39I am the home chef meal kit.
- 3:41we listen it's just the two of us
- 3:44now and when you get down to just
- 3:47two of you and nobody else in the
- 3:49house easier the better don't even care
- 3:53about taste some nights oh no that's that
- 3:58don't that don't fly at miles mostly
- 4:01because i do all the cooking i'm about
- 4:03to say my wife is home and i'm
- 4:04getting turkey sandwiches
- 4:07Hey,
- 4:07I wouldn't be mad at a turkey sandwich.
- 4:10I like a good turkey sandwich.
- 4:11It needs to be done right,
- 4:12but I'd get down on a turkey sandwich.
- 4:15Dude,
- 4:17I truly believe I could eat sandwiches the
- 4:19rest of my life,
- 4:21and I'd be okay with it.
- 4:25I love a good sandwich,
- 4:28especially either flat-pressed or
- 4:31panini-pressed or...
- 4:35You make me a hot sandwich and I'll
- 4:37do pretty much whatever you need me to
- 4:38do after that.
- 4:39Yeah.
- 4:40I,
- 4:42to me that it might be my favorite
- 4:44meal ever, but you know,
- 4:46you gotta have like good,
- 4:48good meats and cheese.
- 4:50Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:52Absolutely.
- 4:53I want to get up to, uh,
- 4:57up to the glintons area and hit up
- 4:58their deli because i want to get uh
- 5:02garrett to make me a sandwich from the
- 5:03deli because a good deli sandwich will
- 5:05change your life amanda does blue apron
- 5:10once a week yeah we do home chef
- 5:11we just switched to it really happy with
- 5:13it really happy with it we tried some
- 5:16of the other ones that seems to be
- 5:18the one we've we've liked the most uh
- 5:21jungle heat here in south florida
- 5:25uh meg i work from home and i'm
- 5:28i myself don't make me fancy lunches like
- 5:33yesterday i worked the second half of the
- 5:34day from home so i got home and
- 5:37weighed out my chicken weighed out my rice
- 5:39weighed out you know cut up my zucchini
- 5:41whatnot and i threw everything in a pan
- 5:43and like kind of stir fried it to
- 5:44heat it up and that is top notch
- 5:47but that's when i got time to do
- 5:48that like nine ninety nine percent of the
- 5:51time is throw it in the microwave and
- 5:53hope for the best
- 5:55Yeah, I was going to say,
- 5:56I weighed out the microwave as it's
- 5:59finishing up.
- 6:00Oh, speaking of.
- 6:05The building that we're in, the gym.
- 6:07we've had fixed repaired several different
- 6:11times it's the it's on the landlords not
- 6:14on us right and every once in a
- 6:16while we had a monsoon uh i had
- 6:19a pretty bad one last week couple days
- 6:21whatnot and it'll knock like if they've
- 6:24left roofing screws or whatnot up there
- 6:25it'll knock them over find them in the
- 6:27parking lot
- 6:28well i was leaving out the gym one
- 6:29day last week and i found another one
- 6:31so i sent it to our little group
- 6:32chat and i was like hey y'all be
- 6:33careful you know we don't anybody get a
- 6:36flat tire it's a giant screw out there
- 6:38the next day uh sarah one of the
- 6:41owners sends a text message there's a
- 6:43microwave on the ground in front of the
- 6:47roll-up door with an unpopped bag of
- 6:50popcorn in it
- 6:55And she couldn't figure out which button
- 6:57to hit.
- 6:57So they just ripped it out of the
- 6:58wall and brought it to our gym.
- 7:03It wasn't our mark, our, our microwave.
- 7:06We have a microwave inside.
- 7:07It works just fine.
- 7:10But she said, cause I,
- 7:13I found one and then Jeff found one
- 7:15to roof and screws.
- 7:16And she said,
- 7:17I will see your roof and screws and
- 7:19raise you a microwave.
- 7:21And it was just sitting out there in
- 7:22front of the roll up doors.
- 7:26I told Cecil, I was like,
- 7:28I don't know how it fit down to
- 7:29downspout or what it was doing on the
- 7:31roof to begin with.
- 7:33Yeah.
- 7:34Sean says,
- 7:35sometimes we just straight up eat out of
- 7:37the pots and dishes we use to make
- 7:39the meal.
- 7:40I'm all for that.
- 7:41My wife would never, ever go for that.
- 7:44Dude, when I lived by myself, I would,
- 7:48and I still do this most of the
- 7:49time during the week,
- 7:50like I'll take out a bowl on Monday.
- 7:52I will make my food.
- 7:53I will warm it up in the bowl.
- 7:55I will eat.
- 7:55I will wash the bowl,
- 7:56and I will use that bowl all week
- 7:58long.
- 7:59Yeah.
- 8:02Lito could live on pizza.
- 8:05I used to be able to.
- 8:08I just couldn't anymore.
- 8:09Oh, I probably, if it,
- 8:11we gotta be specific about the pizza
- 8:13though.
- 8:14There's a place down here called, uh, Oh,
- 8:18good Lord diversion pizza.
- 8:19Uh, and I could live off their pizza.
- 8:22It's handmade and like,
- 8:24it's not dominoes and bullshit and
- 8:26whatnot.
- 8:26Like I could live off of that.
- 8:28Uh, Megan, I used to be friends.
- 8:33She said sandwiches shouldn't be hot.
- 8:35She's out of her mind.
- 8:36I'm going to text her later and be
- 8:38like, you're out of your mind.
- 8:40You go to the French Quarter and you
- 8:45get a po' boy.
- 8:47And that baby's pressed on that flat iron.
- 8:53Like there is nothing better in the world
- 8:57than that.
- 8:58Dude, a hot roast beef.
- 9:00With gravy?
- 9:03Andouille sausage with a little bit of red
- 9:05sauce?
- 9:07Mothers has a thing called a debris po'
- 9:09boy where you get the gravy and you
- 9:12get,
- 9:13it's literally the debris so all the
- 9:15chunks of meat that was soaking in just
- 9:17goes all up on there.
- 9:19Sometimes you can get the debris gravy on
- 9:22a fried shrimp po' boy and that will
- 9:26change your entire life.
- 9:28Tell you that right now.
- 9:30Yes, G needs to make us all soon.
- 9:33She described a sandwich one day,
- 9:35and I almost drove to Long Island that
- 9:41minute.
- 9:42I'm heading over right now.
- 9:45I was going to camp out until the
- 9:47store opened the next morning.
- 9:49Well, luckily, we know Garrett.
- 9:50And I'm going to be like, hey, man,
- 9:53I need you to take care of that
- 9:54for me.
- 9:55Whatever that was you were talking about,
- 9:56I need to get some of that.
- 9:59Yeah.
- 10:01Try Red Apron, you get a live chicken.
- 10:09Corey be eating those muffaladas.
- 10:11Gosh, I love a muffalada too.
- 10:13I can't eat a whole muffalada.
- 10:15I can eat,
- 10:16and I cannot eat an entire muffalada.
- 10:17I can eat a half a muffalada,
- 10:19but I ain't doing much else the rest
- 10:20of the day if I do.
- 10:21I was so excited.
- 10:23We went to a restaurant here a couple
- 10:24years ago,
- 10:25and they had muffalada on the menu.
- 10:28I was like, oh.
- 10:30yes that thing came it was the farthest
- 10:33thing from a real muffalada no you got
- 10:36to get one from central grocery in new
- 10:38orleans it should have just been picked up
- 10:41off the plate and thrown in the trash
- 10:43that's all it was good for show you
- 10:45what this is gonna be all right for
- 10:49uh chicken and fried eggs for lunch here
- 10:52that sounds good too are you mad at
- 10:56that
- 10:58John George wants to know if someone's
- 10:59just going to show up with a big
- 11:00ass fan at your gym.
- 11:03I mean,
- 11:03they dropped off a microwave with an
- 11:06unpopped bag of popcorn in the microwave.
- 11:11It's the weirdest thing, dude.
- 11:14Like who's riding around with that?
- 11:15It's like, fuck this.
- 11:16I'm going to drop this off right here
- 11:17in front of this gym.
- 11:18Surely these people could use that.
- 11:21The best part about it is if you
- 11:22go around the corner, there's a dumpster.
- 11:27And when I say around the corner,
- 11:28I mean, like,
- 11:28to the end of the building,
- 11:29which is not far.
- 11:31It's, like, it's twenty-five meters.
- 11:34There's a dumpster right back there.
- 11:35Like,
- 11:35you could have just dropped it in a
- 11:36dumpster.
- 11:36Instead,
- 11:36they just put it in front of the
- 11:38roll-up doors.
- 11:40Yeah.
- 11:41Savant says, like and subscribe.
- 11:42I like that.
- 11:44Big fan.
- 11:45He also will eat any sandwich made for
- 11:47him.
- 11:48Same, dude.
- 11:49You make me a sandwich?
- 11:53That's love.
- 11:55Um...
- 11:56I stayed at Disney's Port Orleans Hotel,
- 11:58couldn't get enough of the beignets.
- 12:00I think I'm good for life.
- 12:02I'm not a huge beignet fan,
- 12:04and I know I'm just not a big
- 12:05donut guy.
- 12:06Any kind of like fried dough,
- 12:09that's never been my jam.
- 12:11But man, muffalettas, po'boys, all that,
- 12:16some gumbo, I'm all in.
- 12:24All right.
- 12:25Let's talk a little bit.
- 12:27Oh, God.
- 12:27Gator sausage.
- 12:28That's good, too.
- 12:29I hate to admit it, but damn,
- 12:31that's good.
- 12:32I could send you some gator sausage
- 12:33tomorrow if you want.
- 12:36I'm sure you can.
- 12:37I really can.
- 12:38There's several places down here that sell
- 12:41it.
- 12:41I could ship you some tomorrow.
- 12:44I wanted to take a minute because we
- 12:46just had...
- 12:49the French showdown,
- 12:51one person in our chat was there live.
- 12:53She, uh,
- 12:57she got her ticket to the games in
- 12:59the thirty five to thirty nine year old
- 13:00division.
- 13:02If you didn't see her,
- 13:02you weren't looking because the bright red
- 13:05hair, it's impossible.
- 13:07The zebra striped pants.
- 13:10You couldn't miss her.
- 13:13And, um,
- 13:15What I'll say is she sent me a
- 13:16recap of her experience at the French
- 13:18Throwdown.
- 13:18Awesome.
- 13:20And I want to read a couple things
- 13:21from that.
- 13:22And it's Lito Calagiani.
- 13:25Calagiani.
- 13:29She said the attention to detail was
- 13:30insane.
- 13:32They had people constantly cleaning the
- 13:33lanes.
- 13:34As an athlete,
- 13:35you couldn't leave your stuff anywhere.
- 13:39Anywhere you wanted so it wouldn't look
- 13:41untidy.
- 13:43If you...
- 13:47How you do anything is how you do
- 13:49everything.
- 13:50Correct.
- 13:51Right.
- 13:52If you're worried about how tidy the place
- 13:54looks,
- 13:56then you're paying attention to all the
- 13:57detail.
- 13:59Correct.
- 14:00I like that a lot.
- 14:03there were volunteers whose job it was to
- 14:05wipe the barbells from chalk so athletes
- 14:09wouldn't have to.
- 14:10The crowd, electric.
- 14:12Spectators showed up and they were loud,
- 14:15even for Masters.
- 14:16I've never competed in such a full arena
- 14:18before.
- 14:19Even the secondary arena was half full
- 14:22during Masters events.
- 14:23I didn't even know there was a secondary
- 14:26arena.
- 14:28I was today years old when I found
- 14:29that out.
- 14:35Part of the reason why is probably because
- 14:37spectator tickets were quite cheap.
- 14:39Anyway,
- 14:40anywhere from eighty to one hundred twenty
- 14:42five euros,
- 14:43that would equate to ninety to one hundred
- 14:44and forty five bucks for a three day
- 14:46pass.
- 14:48OK,
- 14:49that's what they charge for one day at
- 14:52Legends and the Masters games last year.
- 14:57um even for us athletes the entry fee
- 15:00was only uh two hundred fifty euros for
- 15:03three days two hundred ninety bucks um it
- 15:07was not that for magic city uh the
- 15:10vendor village was very well positioned so
- 15:13you had to walk through it on the
- 15:15way in and out of the venue
- 15:20Regarding Carolyn's comment,
- 15:22so Sunday Night Carolyn made a comment
- 15:24that three spots for ten people seemed
- 15:27excessive.
- 15:29Uh,
- 15:31Lito says, it is true,
- 15:32it is kind of wild,
- 15:33but also that field was vetted a lot.
- 15:36Half of us came from their online
- 15:37qualifier with strict video review among
- 15:41dozens of people from all over the world
- 15:43as anyone could sign up.
- 15:45Then the other five were invited from
- 15:46quarters, top five in Europe,
- 15:49where they ended up backfilling a couple
- 15:51of spots down,
- 15:52but was pretty much some of the top
- 15:54in Europe.
- 15:58And the last thing is I made a
- 15:59comment about a lot of false starts that
- 16:01I saw.
- 16:02She said there was a difference between
- 16:06the countdown clock and the beep.
- 16:10Oh.
- 16:12So some people were looking up at the
- 16:14countdown clock,
- 16:16some people listening to the beep,
- 16:18and that gave that illusion of a false
- 16:20start.
- 16:22Okay.
- 16:25You had to be listening for the beep,
- 16:26I saw.
- 16:27Mm-hmm.
- 16:28Yeah.
- 16:31It's funny.
- 16:32They didn't say that, you know, like,
- 16:34you know what I mean?
- 16:36Like, Hey, go by the beat,
- 16:39not by the wall.
- 16:41That's just for the fans or whatever.
- 16:43But overall,
- 16:44like everything from a viewer's
- 16:46perspective, this weekend was awesome.
- 16:48And it's good to hear the athletes had
- 16:51the same, um,
- 16:56The same experience.
- 16:58And that there were big crowds there.
- 17:00And I didn't even know there were two
- 17:01arenas.
- 17:02Holy shit.
- 17:03Yeah, that's a lot.
- 17:04So that means they were spread out among
- 17:06the two.
- 17:08It's a good thing.
- 17:09Yeah.
- 17:10It's a good thing.
- 17:11Instead of just having one floor,
- 17:12you can have multiple things going on at
- 17:14the same time.
- 17:15did you um did you watch any of
- 17:18the action at all this weekend i watched
- 17:20very little of it friday saturday uh
- 17:23jameson's softball tournament got
- 17:25rescheduled to saturday so i was at uh
- 17:28coach saturday morning and i was at the
- 17:30baseball park from nine thirty in the
- 17:33morning to about five thirty six o'clock
- 17:35in the afternoon so no i didn't get
- 17:38to watch i watched softball all day i
- 17:40watched eight-year-olds play softball all
- 17:42day sounds exciting
- 17:44oh it was super exciting she loves it
- 17:48dude like that's that's all i give a
- 17:51damn about and she's she's getting good
- 17:52and she wants to be better uh carolyn
- 17:56said i talked more about false starts in
- 17:57the online semi i talked about the false
- 17:59starts at french that was me that was
- 18:01on me carolyn uh pedro had issues with
- 18:09the schedule for the secondary arena sadly
- 18:18I have no idea.
- 18:18I know that the parts I did get
- 18:20to listen to him doing the broadcast,
- 18:22he was fantastic.
- 18:25He was really, really doing a good job.
- 18:26He's natural, dude.
- 18:27Just doesn't really get too excited,
- 18:30but he's just talking about what he sees,
- 18:32and he's pretty good at talking.
- 18:37it was so laid back it was i
- 18:40heard um the wad prep people last night
- 18:43talking about claire was talking about
- 18:46it's not your like straight laced
- 18:48professional broadcast and she loved that
- 18:51yeah she loved that it wasn't and and
- 18:55i kind of get it it was
- 18:57it was just different sometimes you just
- 18:59get fatigued from the same voice over and
- 19:03over again you could see oh you could
- 19:06tell that he could see the chat
- 19:10He would answer questions every once in a
- 19:12while or just bring up something that
- 19:13somebody said.
- 19:14He was shamelessly plugging his own coffee
- 19:19pods and wads, which is good for him.
- 19:22He promoted us too.
- 19:24He also sent people to us Friday.
- 19:29It sounded like he was enjoying himself.
- 19:32It wasn't just like,
- 19:33even though I'm sure it was a long
- 19:34ass day,
- 19:36but it just sounded like he was
- 19:38You know,
- 19:39he was putting as much of himself into
- 19:41it as he, as he could.
- 19:42I'm sure he probably took a couple of
- 19:43days to just mentally unwind after that.
- 19:47Cause that's gotta be a lot, dude.
- 19:49I cannot imagine calling like that for an
- 19:52entire day.
- 19:54Yeah.
- 19:55Beginners, intermediates, RX, elites,
- 19:59teams, teens, masters.
- 20:02Yeah.
- 20:03and and vicky's right it did not seem
- 20:06forced at all no and what was the
- 20:09fact that he took time out to promote
- 20:12all the other media people in the space
- 20:16like he didn't have to do that he's
- 20:18on this stage where he's the only show
- 20:21in town well last year they had him
- 20:23in a closet so he's got him he's
- 20:26he's upgraded
- 20:28And then pulling in like BKG and pulling
- 20:31in Nick Johnston and pulling in Harry
- 20:34Lightfoot's coach and all of that
- 20:36throughout the broadcast.
- 20:37Like only because of the relationships
- 20:39he's formed in the space can he do
- 20:42that.
- 20:42Yeah.
- 20:43I would agree.
- 20:47And it was crazy, crazy good.
- 20:55So there's that.
- 20:57I don't know if you took time to
- 20:59do this.
- 21:00I'm probably one of the few who did.
- 21:02Watched John Young's prediction of what
- 21:06current athletes would win the twenty
- 21:08fourteen CrossFit Games.
- 21:10No,
- 21:11I did not have time to do that
- 21:12yet.
- 21:13I really want to check it out because
- 21:15John Young is insane in the very best
- 21:17way.
- 21:18I love that, dude.
- 21:20But I need to check it out.
- 21:23I I do want to say.
- 21:26anybody who just in their spare time goes
- 21:29through that much research and does a
- 21:32hypothetical about something that
- 21:33happened.
- 21:36Two, ten years ago, twelve years ago,
- 21:38twelve years ago,
- 21:41has way too much time on his hands
- 21:43and needs to go on at least seven
- 21:45more podcasts a week because that's just
- 21:48too much.
- 21:50John Young is everywhere.
- 21:54It's fantastic.
- 21:55Um,
- 21:58John Young or John George has J Y
- 22:01fatigue.
- 22:05I, I get that.
- 22:06I, you know, I,
- 22:09I keep getting clipped for saying I have
- 22:11boys interrupted fatigue that it was just,
- 22:17if you listen to the whole thing,
- 22:18like I have,
- 22:19I don't have fatigue over the boys
- 22:21themselves.
- 22:22The group keep getting pulled into
- 22:24everything.
- 22:25Anyway,
- 22:26I don't need to defend that anymore.
- 22:27No.
- 22:31Mark says he tried,
- 22:32but it was just too much to get
- 22:33through.
- 22:33But what was crazy is I think it
- 22:36proved two things.
- 22:40One,
- 22:42because of I do respect the amount of
- 22:44research he did because it did.
- 22:48I couldn't argue with the placings too
- 22:51much in each event because
- 22:55I mean,
- 22:55I could quibble over a place here or
- 22:57there, but at the end of the day,
- 22:58it's not going to make a huge difference.
- 22:59Right.
- 23:01And the people rise to the top.
- 23:06The same fit people rise to the top.
- 23:12The other thing it shows is everything
- 23:15that people are complaining about Dave
- 23:18about is
- 23:22They say that twenty fourteen was the best
- 23:25CrossFit games ever.
- 23:27And it still did things that people bitch
- 23:29about today.
- 23:30Yeah.
- 23:31Right.
- 23:32The programming still did the same stuff.
- 23:35Then we thought it was the greatest ever.
- 23:37Now we're bitching about it.
- 23:41People are not happy unless they have
- 23:43something to complain about.
- 23:46And so I found that that was an
- 23:49interesting revelation because if you
- 23:51don't remember in they did the
- 23:54back-to-back sprint sled races.
- 23:57Yep.
- 23:59Those were both a hundred points.
- 24:03There was the exact same event twice.
- 24:06We're just going to do it twice.
- 24:07Now what it did test is fatigue.
- 24:12Yeah.
- 24:13Recovering.
- 24:14so right anybody can do an event at
- 24:18the best of their ability the first time
- 24:21through it's who can then turn around a
- 24:24minute later and do it again one of
- 24:29my favorite things to tell everybody all
- 24:30right rest five minutes turn around do it
- 24:32again backwards
- 24:34see what it looks like yeah brandon
- 24:37actually programmed stuff like i mean it's
- 24:38it's it's almost interval work at that
- 24:40point you just did it cool we're gonna
- 24:42run everybody through it and we're gonna
- 24:44run everybody through it again see who can
- 24:46repeat their first effort the one thing
- 24:48that fourteen didn't have was machines
- 24:52yeah good yeah that part i loved uh
- 25:00jody says twenty fourteen with a heart
- 25:05um just rumors twenty eighteen was the
- 25:07best year i i would say seventeen was
- 25:11better than eighteen i don't know dude uh
- 25:15eighteen's got matt and uh pat falling off
- 25:20the cargo net yeah seventeen had the o
- 25:24course but it was a sprint o course
- 25:28Mm-hmm.
- 25:28It had Strongman Sphere, Seventeen.
- 25:31It had Kara and Tia right to the
- 25:35end of the competition.
- 25:36Yeah.
- 25:38Trading blows the entire time.
- 25:41Eighteen also had the,
- 25:43when they did the total,
- 25:44Sarah Sigma's daughter.
- 25:47PRs are deadlift with a cracked rib.
- 25:51Like,
- 25:53I would, I would,
- 25:54I don't want to say argue,
- 25:55but I would say that.
- 25:57Seventeen and eighteen is like a,
- 26:00for me anyway, because that's more my,
- 26:03like I watched the eighteen games as
- 26:05first,
- 26:05my first one I ever watched live on
- 26:07TV,
- 26:08that it's a one and a one day
- 26:10when you go back and look at them
- 26:11just from the amount of fun,
- 26:15exciting things that took place.
- 26:19Vicky created a new event,
- 26:20Strong and Fear,
- 26:22is one of her favorite events to watch.
- 26:25And then she did correct it to Strongman.
- 26:28So I'm probably biased because I was a
- 26:31volunteer at the twenty seventeen games.
- 26:33Sure.
- 26:34I worked Strongman's Fear.
- 26:36Like, we were in that.
- 26:38If you remember, the floor was elevated.
- 26:40There was a pit around it.
- 26:42Yeah,
- 26:42that's Matt Fraser diving across the line.
- 26:45And falling off the side.
- 26:47And falling off the end and still didn't
- 26:51get the win.
- 26:53And we were in that pit resetting that
- 26:56equipment after every round.
- 26:59And it just was one of the most
- 27:00fun things I ever did in my life.
- 27:04I bet.
- 27:05And to get that close and personal to
- 27:07the event, and if people don't remember,
- 27:10yeah, it came down to Cara and Tia.
- 27:14Sarah Sigmundsdottir at the Strongman
- 27:16Sphere event had the leader's jersey on.
- 27:18Yes, she did.
- 27:21So it was,
- 27:23the women's side of the event was a
- 27:26crazy, crazy competition.
- 27:28That was good stuff, Dean.
- 27:32Like Dan said,
- 27:34the year of the national champ,
- 27:37he said fights,
- 27:38but was entertaining for the first event.
- 27:42The thing that sticks out with me the
- 27:43most,
- 27:44that's the year Ben Smith got the
- 27:45invitation, right?
- 27:46Because he didn't qualify.
- 27:47So the extended invitations, Ben, Ben,
- 27:50ten.
- 27:50So twenty nineteen.
- 27:52First event starts,
- 27:53he's in the first heat.
- 27:55And my buddy Aaron described it perfectly.
- 27:58He said he just,
- 27:59you watch Ben Smith just wade through this
- 28:01mass of humanity.
- 28:05People are failing snatches,
- 28:07people are failing rope climbs,
- 28:08and Ben's just kicking on through like it
- 28:11ain't no big deal and just rutting on
- 28:13through.
- 28:14That was fun to watch.
- 28:16That was absolutely fun to watch.
- 28:19And then finding out later that Pat
- 28:22Vellner basically threatened to kick the
- 28:24shit out of Sean Sweeney if he didn't
- 28:26quit acting the ass for the crowd and
- 28:29the camera.
- 28:31I never would have seen that coming.
- 28:33Some of us are here to do a
- 28:34thing, man.
- 28:35Keep that shit to yourself.
- 28:42To me, the downfall of the games...
- 28:47And its popularity has to do with all
- 28:50of a sudden this notion that we need
- 28:53to shrink it down to make it fit
- 28:54overseas.
- 28:55Yeah, I didn't like that.
- 28:57The best events were out on that North
- 29:00Park course or at the soccer stadium.
- 29:06The snail, the pigs, the berm run,
- 29:13all that stuff.
- 29:13Like that was...
- 29:16Those are the memorable events.
- 29:20Noah Olsen loading up his wheelbarrow.
- 29:24Noah Olsen loading up his wheelbarrow with
- 29:27every sandbag, picking it up,
- 29:29and it falls over.
- 29:31Like he doesn't get two steps.
- 29:33Yeah.
- 29:34Oh my God.
- 29:36Like that's the kind of sub you did.
- 29:38That just happened.
- 29:39Cause you know how much work it took
- 29:41for him to get them all the way
- 29:42down there to his wheelbarrow.
- 29:43And now he can't lie.
- 29:44We got to start all over loading them
- 29:46back.
- 29:46Like the burden run watching, uh, uh,
- 29:54goodness, Sam Briggs lap people.
- 29:58Yeah.
- 30:01on the berm run.
- 30:03And look,
- 30:03coming by and just tapping Camille on the
- 30:05shoulder like, hey, you're doing great,
- 30:07sweetie.
- 30:07I'm going to go ahead and goodbye you.
- 30:11What's funny is the first year they did
- 30:12the wheelbarrow and the wheelbarrows fell
- 30:14apart because they went to like Home Depot
- 30:17and assembled them.
- 30:19And then the second year they did that,
- 30:21Rogue made a wheelbarrow.
- 30:24They used to have that in their showroom.
- 30:27One of those.
- 30:27Oh, I bet.
- 30:30I think you could run a dump truck
- 30:33over it and it wouldn't bend.
- 30:35If it's made by Rogue, dude, like,
- 30:38no problem believing that whatsoever.
- 30:42And that wasn't even in the soccer
- 30:44stadium.
- 30:44That was in the tennis stadium,
- 30:46the smaller venue.
- 30:48But it was all outdoors.
- 30:49It all had, like, different element.
- 30:53I just,
- 30:53I think we're missing out with being,
- 30:56not being outdoors anymore.
- 30:58Yeah, I don't,
- 30:58I'm not a fan of that either.
- 31:02Um, dude, they fly everybody to the ranch.
- 31:06Yeah.
- 31:07We're going to run a seven K and
- 31:09then we're going to do a deadlift ladder.
- 31:11Then we're going to do the hill sprint
- 31:13again.
- 31:14Hope you guys are ready.
- 31:17Um, just for me,
- 31:18Betsy can bend it with his dump truck.
- 31:25I'd never doubt you, Joseph.
- 31:26Never.
- 31:30So it was an interesting thing.
- 31:32It is a long podcast.
- 31:33I mean,
- 31:34I think it was two hours going through
- 31:36event by event and the leaderboard changes
- 31:39throughout.
- 31:42But interesting,
- 31:44I would say interesting watch.
- 31:45Oh, I'm sure.
- 31:47But it does get a little repetitive
- 31:49towards the end because you kind of know
- 31:51Tia's going to win them all or at
- 31:54least finish in the top five and
- 31:56everything.
- 31:57might not win every single one but she's
- 31:59going to do enough to separate herself
- 32:01from everybody yeah wait till you see the
- 32:07barack obama boulevard takeover this year
- 32:13yeah someone in the comments made a good
- 32:16point that because you know dave put out
- 32:19that thing that big bob could use
- 32:24It's wildfire season.
- 32:25We can't have sparks flying up off of
- 32:27Barack Obama Boulevard.
- 32:32Noted.
- 32:34Right.
- 32:38The last thing I wanted to talk about,
- 32:40and this is about being a coach.
- 32:43Everything we... So,
- 32:45Jamie and I got into a fight on
- 32:46Sunday night.
- 32:47I know that's a shocker.
- 32:48I am.
- 32:49Yeah, I'm flabbergasted.
- 32:51That...
- 32:56athletes are gonna athlete they're going
- 32:58to they are going to try to cut
- 33:01corners and they're going to try to ride
- 33:03a line and that it needs to stop
- 33:07because it's leaking into the gym that's
- 33:11that her argument and i'm like you're
- 33:15never going to get it stopping leaking
- 33:16from the gym because little leaguers are
- 33:18emulating baseball players every day
- 33:22You know,
- 33:22football players emulate football players.
- 33:25It just is what it is.
- 33:28But my question to you is,
- 33:29what about the reverse?
- 33:31Do you think coaches are emulating judges
- 33:36in the classroom?
- 33:38Oh, I do.
- 33:41So when you go up to an athlete
- 33:43and you're like, no rep.
- 33:46I won't yell no rep at somebody during
- 33:48class.
- 33:49I'm not doing that.
- 33:53and I did it Saturday,
- 33:54I will come up to you and be
- 33:57like, hey, stand all the way up.
- 34:01Extend your hips.
- 34:03Like we had synchro kettlebell goblet
- 34:06squats Saturday, and I,
- 34:09one hundred percent,
- 34:09told two of the girls, I was like,
- 34:10hey, stand all the way up.
- 34:12You have to stand all the way up.
- 34:14You have to squat a little parallel.
- 34:15So I think that's fine.
- 34:17If you're a coach and you're worried about
- 34:20movement quality,
- 34:25I think that's the terminology because I
- 34:27was listening to Hobart and Savan and
- 34:28Sousa talk yesterday,
- 34:31and they kept saying movement quality,
- 34:34movement standards.
- 34:36In competition,
- 34:37even in the judge's course you're taught,
- 34:39it doesn't matter about the quality as
- 34:41long as they reach the points of
- 34:43performance, right?
- 34:44Doesn't matter how ugly it looks as long
- 34:46as they're below parallel.
- 34:49But movement quality matters more in the
- 34:52gym, right?
- 34:55And according to Dave Castro,
- 34:57James Hobart is the best mover he's seen.
- 35:01But I think that – stop kissing up.
- 35:05He's happy to be in a chat.
- 35:09So my point is,
- 35:12are the coaches focused on movement
- 35:14quality or
- 35:17or movement standards because that's what
- 35:18they watch on the weekend.
- 35:21And I've seen both.
- 35:22I've seen both in my time at gyms.
- 35:29That's an excellent question.
- 35:30I don't think there needs to be a
- 35:32line of delineation because what they were
- 35:36talking about this morning,
- 35:38Rich moves extremely well,
- 35:40and he also moves extremely fast.
- 35:43That's an outlier.
- 35:45there are athletes that move really well
- 35:48but there are successful athletes that did
- 35:51not move well yeah chandler smith right so
- 35:56god bless him he's fit as all get
- 35:58out but his front rack is horrible it's
- 36:01almost non-existent right but but those
- 36:07athletes
- 36:09movement quality and i i see the comments
- 36:13right movement quality is not the top
- 36:16priority it's getting done faster yeah but
- 36:20what carolyn's saying is one hundred
- 36:22percent correct better movement quality
- 36:24will lead to more efficient movements and
- 36:26therefore you lose use less energy and
- 36:28therefore you can move better again it
- 36:30builds on itself
- 36:34But I know people that have like a
- 36:35really deep squat that is not advantageous
- 36:38for them to do that in a competition.
- 36:41No,
- 36:42but that's something that you need to...
- 36:43It's below parallel.
- 36:45Right.
- 36:45You don't need to ask the grass every
- 36:47single time if you're in a competition.
- 36:49You need to make sure you hit whatever
- 36:51standard that they have.
- 36:53Because if not, you're just... Yeah,
- 36:55you can get to a point where you're
- 36:56wasting energy.
- 36:57Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:59but we should chase trying to become the
- 37:02outlier.
- 37:02That is the fundamental premise of our
- 37:04CrossFit level one technique lecture.
- 37:07You need to do both.
- 37:07Well,
- 37:09I agree in the gym and with the
- 37:11level one,
- 37:12how many athletes don't even have their L
- 37:14one?
- 37:14Yeah.
- 37:14I'm going at my L two this fall.
- 37:21So,
- 37:21so like an athlete hasn't even seen that
- 37:25lecture.
- 37:28That's only now.
- 37:29Coaches can train that in the gym.
- 37:33Yeah.
- 37:36The staggering number of...
- 37:40elite athletes who have not attended an
- 37:42l-one who have absolutely no idea i just
- 37:45they know the sport they've been coached
- 37:47whatever and their coach is coaching them
- 37:49i think that's what you're getting at to
- 37:51do it as quickly as possible while hitting
- 37:53the standard not necessarily as efficient
- 37:55as efficiently as possible right not
- 37:58necessarily going like i'm not going to go
- 38:01i'm going to go here instead of here
- 38:04right
- 38:06That's a whole other issue.
- 38:08I think I would... But in the gym,
- 38:12you wouldn't deter the athlete that goes
- 38:14four inches below parallel and has an
- 38:16increased range of motion.
- 38:18That's healthy.
- 38:20Correct.
- 38:21I would also, uh, in the gym,
- 38:24in a gym setting, in a class setting,
- 38:26then that person is moving that well,
- 38:28then I'm, I'm not correcting that.
- 38:31I might adjust some other things if they
- 38:33need me, but that's, that's,
- 38:35that's a delineation, a separation,
- 38:37separating the sport from the methodology
- 38:40at that point.
- 38:43I don't like watching bad movers move
- 38:45fast.
- 38:47I just don't.
- 38:49Because a lot of the times it looks
- 38:52like bad quality movement because they're
- 38:54moving that fast and it might not be
- 38:57right.
- 38:58But I think that makes it that, that,
- 39:00and I'm sure Birch Birch probably has a
- 39:02whole litany of stuff to talk about as
- 39:04far as that's concerned.
- 39:05Um,
- 39:05but judging that has gotta be not fun
- 39:10watching somebody who's doing awkward
- 39:12looking stuff, but it's still moving fast.
- 39:14Cause it happens.
- 39:16If I train with shitty movement,
- 39:21for long enough to where i get really
- 39:22efficient at doing something really
- 39:24terrible then that's just going to be my
- 39:26movement pattern it's going to be hard to
- 39:27break out of that and once you do
- 39:31break starting to break out starting to
- 39:32fix something like that is it's going to
- 39:35feel weird for the athlete for quite some
- 39:37time i've had to do that with a
- 39:40couple different people at the gym like
- 39:42you've been moving like this for so long
- 39:44this is the only way you know how
- 39:45to move my analogy for this is
- 39:51If you watched Pete Rose bat,
- 39:54you would never teach a young baseball
- 39:57player to hit like that.
- 39:59No.
- 39:59Trying to explain to my daughter why some
- 40:02of the girls bat the way they do
- 40:05that she sees like on YouTube or whatnot.
- 40:07We watch softball highlights and explain
- 40:09to her that that's probably not a good
- 40:11idea for you to do because that's just
- 40:12how they've been doing it for so long.
- 40:13Yeah.
- 40:14Yeah.
- 40:16but Pete Rose went on to hit,
- 40:17have more hits than anybody in the history
- 40:19of baseball,
- 40:20but it would never be the way you
- 40:22would teach somebody to do it.
- 40:25And I think we've got to get out
- 40:26of the room just because this guy at
- 40:29the CrossFit games or a semifinal did it
- 40:32that way.
- 40:33We shouldn't be doing that in the gym.
- 40:34Yeah.
- 40:38Um,
- 40:42James is saying,
- 40:42range of motion is a point of performance
- 40:44for any movement.
- 40:45Sport has just made range of motion the
- 40:47most important one.
- 40:49Coaches have the hard job of improving all
- 40:51points of performance for athletes.
- 40:55Sean says,
- 40:56as long as there's a whiteboard,
- 40:57people will sacrifice movement quality for
- 40:59higher scores.
- 41:01I agree there are a group that do
- 41:02that.
- 41:03It is an unfortunate fact.
- 41:07The other thing I want to say is,
- 41:08when I first started judging sports,
- 41:11I was coaching every day of the week
- 41:15going and then judging and trying to turn
- 41:17off the coach and just viewing standards
- 41:23to judge was very hard, very hard to,
- 41:29to turn that off,
- 41:31to be a good judge.
- 41:32It's not the same thing.
- 41:35It's not.
- 41:35It's not.
- 41:37And, and it's, yeah, it,
- 41:41It would be frustrating.
- 41:41It's why I don't like judging.
- 41:45Like you are hard,
- 41:46you hard pressed to get me to actually
- 41:48judge you unless it's like one person.
- 41:51There's a couple of people at my gym.
- 41:52I will judge if they asked me to,
- 41:55but it's really hard for me to turn
- 41:58most of my coach brain off and just
- 42:00sit there and go yes or no,
- 42:02that rep counted or that rep didn't
- 42:04because I want to fix it.
- 42:08Like, and it drives me bananas.
- 42:11Barry Bonds,
- 42:12greatest home run hitter of all time.
- 42:14One of the worst batting stances too.
- 42:17Yeah, but he smashed that thing though.
- 42:22Some people just have that innate ability
- 42:23to be able to perform athletically in a
- 42:27way that doesn't make sense.
- 42:35Thus,
- 42:35it's painful watching women do heavy
- 42:36squats,
- 42:37knees in and ass rising before the
- 42:39shoulders.
- 42:40It's so hard.
- 42:43So hard.
- 42:46Tia Claire Toomey.
- 42:48Her knees cave on almost every heavy squat
- 42:52I've ever seen her do.
- 42:53Her knees either almost touch sometimes
- 42:55before she gets all the way up.
- 42:57She's the best to ever do it.
- 42:59Best.
- 43:01By far.
- 43:01Best.
- 43:04Carolyn says too many people early on in
- 43:06their career sacrificed mechanics and
- 43:07consistency for intensity.
- 43:10And I think that goes back to most
- 43:13athletes don't have a level one.
- 43:16Most athletes today, I won't say most,
- 43:19a lot of athletes today are training in
- 43:21their garages or their own facilities.
- 43:27So they're not being coached mechanics or,
- 43:32they're not trained the mci of it all
- 43:37yeah and we're not talking about the phone
- 43:38plan not the phone plan it's the same
- 43:40thing i think every time i put it
- 43:42together mci and i got to stop myself
- 43:44and see if they're going to ask me
- 43:45if it's a phone plan or not
- 43:48I try to,
- 43:50especially with the newer people,
- 43:52more people that have been there for a
- 43:54while or actively trying to get better,
- 43:58not just trying to have a good hour
- 44:01of their day.
- 44:01I'm like, look,
- 44:03I want you to move well before anything.
- 44:05So that's mechanics, how you move.
- 44:08I have that conversation at least once a
- 44:10week with somebody that I'm coaching.
- 44:12Mechanics,
- 44:12then we're going to do it consistently.
- 44:14Then we'll worry about added intensity.
- 44:16The speed will come.
- 44:18The speed will come.
- 44:20The more you do this,
- 44:21as long as you're moving well,
- 44:22eventually you will get faster,
- 44:24whether you want to or not.
- 44:26If you do it long enough and you
- 44:27start, you know, just come to class,
- 44:29really all you need to do,
- 44:31let us handle the rest,
- 44:32but you got to listen.
- 44:34Um, Carolyn says,
- 44:35I think a lot of athletes are actually
- 44:37in affiliates now,
- 44:38but my argument to that would be,
- 44:40they may be in the affiliate,
- 44:41but they're not doing class.
- 44:42They're not being,
- 44:43it's not a coach driven Jason Hopper
- 44:46program that they're doing.
- 44:50Right.
- 44:52Jason Hopper's not in my five thirty
- 44:54class.
- 44:54I. Yeah,
- 45:00I think really good athletes are skipping
- 45:02the step of going and doing classes at
- 45:05a CrossFit gym and learning the MCI of
- 45:08it all.
- 45:11Not just learning, but living it.
- 45:12You can't just go, oh yeah,
- 45:14I need to move well.
- 45:15And then just kind of go through the
- 45:18motions.
- 45:18Like you need to actually believe in it
- 45:21and implement it.
- 45:24It's going to make you a better athlete.
- 45:29It will.
- 45:29But when I got my own one and
- 45:31started coaching and whatnot,
- 45:32it made me a better athlete.
- 45:35Yeah.
- 45:38Corey, at my age,
- 45:38I don't need to go faster,
- 45:40just last longer.
- 45:41It's all about priorities, Joseph.
- 45:49David Reed,
- 45:50that's why many of the old school CrossFit
- 45:52athletes move better.
- 45:53Hobart and Rich are two examples,
- 45:55arguably the best movers ever.
- 45:57Taylor Self is a modern athlete who moves
- 45:59unbelievably well.
- 46:00Unbelievably well.
- 46:06There's a lot of athletes that move well.
- 46:09It's just easy to pick out the ones
- 46:10that don't.
- 46:12Well,
- 46:12it's because the ones that don't stand
- 46:15out.
- 46:17Yeah.
- 46:19In a sea of people doing the exact
- 46:21same thing, when one person is,
- 46:25everybody else is doing this,
- 46:27and that one person is doing this,
- 46:29you're going to see that.
- 46:30You can't not see it.
- 46:37But I do agree with the efficiency of
- 46:40it all.
- 46:41The more efficient you are,
- 46:43the longer you're going to be able to
- 46:45sustain the intensity.
- 46:49It's why Rich never looked like he was
- 46:51in a hurry when he was on the
- 46:53floor.
- 46:55He put it in gear.
- 46:58and first couple rounds people were way
- 47:01out in front of him and he just
- 47:02walked him on in and beat everybody beat
- 47:05the brakes off everybody it's because he
- 47:07moved as well as he did yeah or
- 47:13take his throwing out some people who move
- 47:14out like dallin and colton they do there's
- 47:17a lot of good movers and there's a
- 47:20lot of people that skirt the line
- 47:24It just is the way sports are.
- 47:26Ken Griffey Jr.
- 47:27had a beautiful swing.
- 47:30And he was great.
- 47:32Barry Bonds, not so much.
- 47:33Still great.
- 47:34Still great.
- 47:35And the same thing happens in CrossFit.
- 47:37All right, guys.
- 47:43I have a busy work day.
- 47:45I've hit the end of my lunch hour.
