Transcript
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hey folks, Bruce Parkman here, your host of Broken Brains, the official podcast of the Mac Parkman Foundation, getting back into it after a month of rest to let you know that in two weeks, we're gonna have an amazing summit.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And why is this important?
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, you know why we exist, right?
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: We lost Mac, became aware that there is a massive problem with the issue of repetitive impacts and broken brains.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: And we also learned that our veterans, like myself, who didn't even know he was suffering at the time, probably tormented my wife for decades because I didn't know my brain was hurt, and that out of my anger and impatience and all that stuff was a result of it.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I needed some tweaking.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: This summit right now is the only summit in the world to talk about this aspect of brain health.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And this is the largest aspect of brain health.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Think about that, right?
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: The largest problem we have with brain health right now, outside the fact that we don't adequately treat it, is the fact that this entire hidden population of repetitive brain trauma patients is out there with little or no knowledge to treat them.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: The correlation between repetitive impacts, mental illness, and damage to the brain is not taught in any medical nursing or psychiatric course or suicide prevention course in this country.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: This makes it the largest preventable cause of mental illness in this country, and the largest misdiagnosed cause of mental illness in this country.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And every year, there are thousands of tragic stories.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: We've got kids in jail now, kids that have been in treatment for years, green berets in jail.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, all of this is due to an inadequate approach to mental health caused by repetitive brain trauma, exposure to repetitive head impacts, exposure to repetitive blast exposure.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: So that's why we have the summit.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: It's our third year this year.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: We're gonna conduct it at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation in partnership with the University of South Florida here in Tampa.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: There's gonna be two days this year, 16th and 17th, two full days of some of the most amazing people out there.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: We've got General uh Brian Fenton, the former U.S.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Silcom commander, recently retired, keynoting.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: We've got uh General Um uh Hartswell from the uh Florida Department of Better Affairs speaking.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: We've got uh Robert Gallery, former NFL player and retired uh gentleman who put his life back together, uh keynoting.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Uh Dr.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Nicole Roberts is gonna attend, who has been running Lee Steinberg's Brain Summit for 14 years.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: And it just goes on and on.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: We were oversubscribed in every area for applications to speak.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: We're already half sold out, so we highly encourage you to get uh get tickets, get here, because it's a game changer.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: The networking that takes place at this uh function is not just people that know each other, it's people that never met each other before.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: People on different paths of life, patients, mothers and fathers of children who were damaged, athletes who are trying to find their way back, veterans who have lost themselves and lost hope, caretakers, you know, children of people that have been impacted.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: This crosses every sociodemographic of this country.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: It crosses gender, it crosses uh there's nothing that nobody is immune from the impacts of this uh situation.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: So this summit is gonna be amazing.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to reach out to you and talk to you about it and let you know we're gonna have coverage, uh, we're and we're looking for ways to improve.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: So show up, you know, participate, become part of the solution because this is impacting millions of Americans, and we need your help.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: So take a look again.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: You go to our website, www.mpfact.org, the Mac Parkman Foundation for Adolescent Concussive Trauma.org.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: You can download all the information, just look at the agenda and and look us up.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: And while you're there, download our free book because it's the only book for parents out there on repetitive impacts.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: It's been approved by everybody in the CT community, every doctor that's read it, and every parent that's read it said, why don't I know this?
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Not only parents, but doctors and nurses as well.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: That's how unknown this situation is, and that's how important it is that we move fast to change.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And that's the subject of our summit.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: It's all about change, it's all about action.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Because for too long we have known that these problems existed, yet parents like me were completely unaware and made bad decisions that cost us the life of our son.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: And we do not want anybody else to pay that bill.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: So we're all about stop research, stop asking for FDA approvals for evidence-backed modalities that thousands and tens of thousands of people have been through that have an 80 plus percent positive response rate.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Stop looking for obstacles, stop looking for no's.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Let's say yes, let's take some risk, let's get the millions of Americans that are suffering the help they need.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: And let's push this through.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: It's a long road.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And it's getting shorter every year as more and more of you are aware of this problem and are either speaking your minds or voting with your children not to participate in these sports until they're adults.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: And then limiting the uh the limiting the aggregate exposure and making sure they don't play back-to-back sports or concussive sports all year wrong.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Simple changes.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: It's not rocket science.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: You'd think it is, by the way, that we're running away from.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: But we're not running.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: So take a look at your summit.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Please count on attending, and we hope to see you there.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Once again, the third annual summit on repetitive brain trauma, Tampa, Florida, September 16th and 17th at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation, University of Southern Florida, right here by the Convention Center.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Look forward to seeing you.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: And remember, your children only got one melon.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Take care of it.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Thank you and God bless you.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Take care.
