- 0:00SPEAKER_04: Hello everybody and welcome back to Flabbergosted.
- 0:03SPEAKER_03: I'm Jen.
- 0:05SPEAKER_04: I'm Meg.
- 0:07SPEAKER_04: And today we are going to be covering the Lizzie Borden house.
- 0:12SPEAKER_05: Okay, I'm ready.
- 0:13SPEAKER_04: You ready?
- 0:14SPEAKER_04: I'm so ready.
- 0:16SPEAKER_04: There's a lot to cover here.
- 0:17SPEAKER_04: I'm not even gonna lie.
- 0:19SPEAKER_04: So what do you know about Lizzie Borden?
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: I actually know quite a lot.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Um I know she like may or may not have killed her parents with an axe.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Um she was acquitted, right?
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: She was.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: And then that's all I can think of at the moment.
- 0:44SPEAKER_04: Have you heard the nursery rhyme?
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Yes, but I can't think of it off the top of my head.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: Alright, so the nursery rhyme is Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty wax.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Not gonna lie, I feel like you should have sung that like the children do.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: I don't know how they sing it.
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: Oh okay.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: Well I never hold on, let me borden rhyme tune.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: There's other vo like Tarara Boom DA.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: I don't even know that one.
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: Let me look it up.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: Now I'm like going down the YouTube rabbit hole.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: It's still apparent.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: I was like, I only know it from like the Aristacats.
- 1:38SPEAKER_04: I have an ad.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: There's always an ad.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: It's like that episode of adults, where they're like, oh never mind, there's a paywall.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: Which by the way, I did finish the first season of that yesterday.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: Of what?
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Adults.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, I did too.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Well, uh, I'm on season two, but Paul Baker.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: Paul Baker, we love Paul Baker.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: We love Paul Baker.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, I love all of them.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: They're all insane.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: They're unhinged.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: Oh, it'll be 25.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, it'll be 25.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: It's probably like Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 wax when she saw what she had done.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: She gave her father 41.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: Something along that those lines.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: Spooky.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: Very.
- 2:33SPEAKER_04: So I'm not gonna cover too much about the trial itself, but I did want to go into a little bit of the background and I want to introduce the Bordens and the family.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: So let's jump right in.
- 2:44SPEAKER_04: So Lizzie Borden was born on July 19th in 1860 in Fall River, Massachusetts.
- 2:51SPEAKER_04: She was the youngestborn daughter to her father, Andrew Borden, and then her mother, Sarah Borden.
- 3:00SPEAKER_04: And she actually had two sisters.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: She had Emma Borden and she had Alice Borden.
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: However, she was born after Alice Borden had already passed away.
- 3:12SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
- 3:13SPEAKER_04: Yes, Alice passed away in 1858.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: And Lizzie was born in 1860.
- 3:18SPEAKER_04: And then in 1862, Lizzie's mother, Sarah Borden, died.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: And then three years later, her father remarried Abby Borden, maiden named Gray.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: So do you know anything about Andrew Borden?
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: Uh mean besides the fact that he was killed with an ass?
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: No.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: So Andrew Borden was actually a businessman.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: And he was quite successful.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: He managed properties, and at one point, or it's said that he was involved in a business that provided coffins and funeral clothes and burial assistance.
- 3:56SPEAKER_04: And then he also invested in banking and textiles.
- 3:59SPEAKER_04: But it seems like this family wasn't really turned off by the macabre already.
- 4:06SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 4:08SPEAKER_04: And it was said that him and Lizzie had a really good relationship.
- 4:14SPEAKER_04: But that's when Lizzie was young.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: And as she grew older, it started to strain, but it seemed like more than just, you know, the typical rebellion type that you would get from like teenagers.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: Did you ever go through a phase with your parents where you're just fighting defiant?
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: I feel like that can describe like my entire high school years.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: Mine too.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:39SPEAKER_04: Mine too.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: So a lot of people think that the strain in their relationship came from the fact that her father was a successful businessman, but he didn't spend the money updating the house with all of the new modern technology that could be installed.
- 4:58SPEAKER_04: And this is running water and gas mains and even a telephone.
- 5:05SPEAKER_04: Whack.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: Very whack.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: And he got whacked.
- 5:09SPEAKER_04: But can you imagine not having any of these, even though all of your friends have it?
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: You are, you know, a socialite, you're trying to be involved in the community, and you can't even phone your friend, and everyone's phoning their friends.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: I guess it can kind of be compared to you.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Like, do you remember in middle school when everybody was getting iPhones, but then like you were still stuck on your flip phone?
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: Yes, I do vividly.
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: So because that's when I was living in Japan, and everyone around me was getting iPhones, and I got a purple clamshell phone.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: It was red first, and then it was purple, but it was a flip phone.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: You know what?
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: I think I still have it.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I remember being like 13 and all my friends were getting like the iPhone 3, and then I still have my flip phone, and I was like begging my parents.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: I was like, please let me get an iPhone.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: It's so cool.
- 6:01SPEAKER_04: I didn't get an iPhone till my sophomore year of high school, and it was the iPhone 4s.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: I got an iPhone 3 in 8th grade, you're not gonna lie.
- 6:11SPEAKER_04: Let's see.
- 6:12SPEAKER_04: I had to suffer.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: It's fine.
- 6:15SPEAKER_04: Joe had an iPhone, my sister had an iPhone, but she was like, I think she got hers when she was like a freshman.
- 6:21SPEAKER_04: I don't really remember.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 6:23SPEAKER_04: But yeah, so her father could afford all of these modern updates.
- 6:29SPEAKER_04: He just didn't want to do it.
- 6:31SPEAKER_04: And supposedly what he wanted to spend his money on, or rather, what he did spend his money on, was the stepmother, Abby Borden.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: So it's not like a frugal thing, it was pampering.
- 6:47SPEAKER_04: Supposedly.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: And supposedly, this caused some jealousy.
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: That is what some people believe was could have been a motivation for this crime.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: So now we're jumping to 1892, August 4th.
- 7:09SPEAKER_04: Emma, Emma Borden was out visiting a sick friend.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: The stepmother Abby was home.
- 7:16SPEAKER_04: Lizzie was home.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: And then the Bordens had a live-in maid, a live-in Irish maid.
- 7:23SPEAKER_04: Her name was Bridget Sullivan, and they called her Maggie.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: How do you get Maggie from Bridget?
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 7:33SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 7:34SPEAKER_04: We're just gonna go with it.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, how do you get Dick from Richard, but you asked my sleeve.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: So Abby, Lizzie, and Maggie are home.
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: Andrew came home at 11 a.m.
- 7:53SPEAKER_04: and he laid on the couch for a little nappy nap.
- 7:57SPEAKER_04: I love a couch nap.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: I love a good couch nap.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: It really gets me.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: I've had it happen.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: I've just seen it happen.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: What?
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Oh you asleep on the couch.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: It's so comfy.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: It's like every time we hang out, we're sitting on a couch.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: You're just zomped out.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: I'm a fall.
- 8:18SPEAKER_04: I don't know what it is, but it just really gets I'm a sleepy girl.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: So 11 a.m.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: Andrew comes home, lays on his couch for a nappy nap.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: And then at 11 15 a.m.
- 8:33SPEAKER_04: Lizzie found her father's body.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's a good turnaround.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Very that's not a great word of phrase, but okay, we're gonna go with it.
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: We're gonna go with it.
- 8:45SPEAKER_04: Andrew Borden was struck in the face 11 times.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: Contrary to the nursery rhyme of 41.
- 8:55SPEAKER_04: It was like 181, 11.
- 8:57SPEAKER_04: 11 times in the face.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: I mean that's still that's overkill.
- 9:01SPEAKER_04: Well, upstairs, Abby Borden, the stepmother, was also found in one of the bedrooms.
- 9:08SPEAKER_04: And she was struck 19 times.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: Okay, I can see why people say that Lizzie was jealous.
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 9:15SPEAKER_04: The examination confirmed that these murders actually occurred 90 minutes apart.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: What was the murderer doing in those 90 minutes?
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: How did Abby was Andrew killed first?
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: No, Abby was killed first.
- 9:30SPEAKER_04: Oh.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: So where was he?
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: Was he not in the house?
- 9:34SPEAKER_04: No, he was at work and he came home and then wanted his nappy nap, and then he got an eternal nappy nap.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 9:43SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, okay, then I guess the 90 minutes makes sense because you know, I've got to wait for him to come home.
- 9:50SPEAKER_04: I wonder unless it's in the house.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 9:55SPEAKER_04: So Lizzie and Maggie were supposedly in the barn when the murders occurred.
- 10:01SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: Like I said, I'm not going to cover too much about the specifics around the murders or around the act, but the 90 minutes did cause a lot of speculation because even if Lizzie had killed her father between 11 and 1115, by the time the cops got there, she wouldn't have had time to clean up any mess.
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: She wasn't found like splattered with blood.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 10:29SPEAKER_04: The more details of the crime will come up as we're going through the hauntings.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was just like you said no speculation, and then I'm over here like, oh no, it's fascinating.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, this is fascinating.
- 10:41SPEAKER_04: It it truly is.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: Okay, so in June of 1893, so about a year later, Lizzie was arrested and tried for the murders.
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: The prosecutors tried to argue that it was an act of greed over the inheritance matters, and the defense argued that there was a lack of physical evidence.
- 11:00SPEAKER_04: Lizzie was ultimately found not guilty and acquitted.
- 11:06SPEAKER_04: So Lizzie and her sister Emma continued to live in Fall River despite being ostracized from society as a result of this trial.
- 11:15SPEAKER_04: And they bought the Maplecroft Mansion.
- 11:19SPEAKER_04: I'm not too sure how far this was from the Borden house, but they bought the Maplecroft mansion.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: But then in 1905, the sisters had a falling out and Emma Borden left.
- 11:31SPEAKER_05: Did Lizzie drive her out?
- 11:32SPEAKER_05: I wonder.
- 11:33SPEAKER_04: Apparently, there was an argument over a friend that Lizzie had.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: Some argue that this friend was actually a lover, it was a woman.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: Again, it's all speculation.
- 11:44SPEAKER_04: I really don't know.
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: No one really knows what the sisters had a falling out about, but they had a falling out and Emma left.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: In 1927, it said that Lizzie passed from pneumonia or complications of a gallbladder surgery at the age of 66.
- 12:03SPEAKER_04: And then nine days later, Emma died from chronic kidney disease.
- 12:07SPEAKER_04: And she didn't even know her sister had already passed at that point.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: That's crazy.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Also very interesting that Lizzie was 66.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: So the it was the devil.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: Confirmed.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: Confirmed.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to look up how far away that mansion is, but Google Maps is not loading.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: Apologies if y'all hear me sniffling.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: I got a bit of a cold.
- 12:40SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 12:41SPEAKER_04: So despite everything that happened in the boarding house and the home and the murders, this house was transformed into a bed and breakfast that opened its doors in 1996.
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: We love that.
- 12:59SPEAKER_04: You and I are not born yet.
- 13:02SPEAKER_04: Wait, what year?
- 13:04SPEAKER_04: 1996.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Oh, close.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: But not really.
- 13:09SPEAKER_04: No.
- 13:09SPEAKER_04: We're getting close.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: Do you know anything about the board in bed and breakfast?
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Um, I know it's been featured on some like paranormal investigation shows.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: Like, that's how I know of this story.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: But I couldn't tell you anything else beyond that.
- 13:29SPEAKER_04: So this B has been dubbed the most haunted house in the United States.
- 13:36SPEAKER_04: That's a bold claim.
- 13:38SPEAKER_04: Very.
- 13:40SPEAKER_04: So for 30 years, there have been stories of poltergeist activity and unexplained noises and physical sensations, all of which have reportedly been witnessed inside the home.
- 13:57SPEAKER_04: And for our audience, I decided to share some of the rooms that you can stay in at the boarding house to this day.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: Secretly, this episode is us planning our next girl's trip.
- 14:10SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 14:11SPEAKER_04: This is not a sponsored episode.
- 14:13SPEAKER_04: Not sponsored.
- 14:14SPEAKER_04: Not sponsored.
- 14:16SPEAKER_04: So the rooms you can stay in include the Lizzie and Emma suite.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: I feel like it's a bit self-explanatory.
- 14:22SPEAKER_04: This is the room that Lizzie and Emma stayed in.
- 14:26SPEAKER_04: You have the Andrew and Abby suite.
- 14:29SPEAKER_04: So this includes the bedroom that Andrew and Abby had.
- 14:33SPEAKER_04: And then she kind of had Abby had a sewing room off to the side.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: This is included in the suite as well.
- 14:39SPEAKER_04: We have the John V.
- 14:41SPEAKER_04: Morse suite.
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: This is named after Lizzie's uncle.
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: I'll go more into him in a little bit.
- 14:47SPEAKER_04: But this is actually where Abby Borden was found murdered.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: So she wasn't found murdered in her bedroom, she was found murdered in the John V.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: Morse suite.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I'm sure that room has a much higher price rate.
- 15:01SPEAKER_04: We'll get into it.
- 15:03SPEAKER_04: So then we have the Bridget Sullivan room.
- 15:06SPEAKER_04: This is named after their live and maid, and this is where Maggie stay.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: And then we have the Andrew Jennings room.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: This is named in dedication to Lizzie's defense lawyer.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: We have the Hosea Knowlton room, and this is named in dedication of the district attorney of Southern Massachusetts for Lizzie's trial.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: So you want to guess which suites possibly have more reports of paranormal phenomena?
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: I am gonna guess the room where Abby was murdered.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Because you have like that residual energy of a murder happening.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: Maybe, maybe Lizzie's room too.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: There's one more.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: You're two for three.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: There's one more.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Is it Maggie's room?
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Yes, girl, you're three for three.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Take me to Megan's.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 16:14SPEAKER_04: Win the jackpot.
- 16:16SPEAKER_04: So those are the more active suites where paranormal phenomena is set to take place.
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: The Lizzie and Emma suite, the John V.
- 16:23SPEAKER_04: Morse room, or the John V.
- 16:25SPEAKER_04: Morse suite, it's I've heard it both ways, and that's where Abby was found murdered, like you said, and then the Bridget Sullivan room, which was Maggie's room.
- 16:32SPEAKER_04: So woo, go Meg!
- 16:34unknown: Woo-hoo!
- 16:36SPEAKER_04: So the cellar and the living room also receive reports of elevated paranormal activity as well.
- 16:43SPEAKER_04: So again, to help our audience and you understand a little bit more about these hauntings, we're gonna go floor by floor and almost room by room.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Okay, let me let me get some paper.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna draw a floor plan.
- 16:56SPEAKER_04: Okay, good, good, good.
- 16:58SPEAKER_04: Alright, so the first floor.
- 17:02SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 17:03SPEAKER_04: On this floor, guests state that electronic disturbances are very common in the kitchen and in the dining room.
- 17:12SPEAKER_04: So one testimonial from 2008 reports that a video recorder, the battery died rapidly.
- 17:26SPEAKER_04: And this battery was fully charged.
- 17:28SPEAKER_04: It reportedly had 200 minutes available and just died.
- 17:34SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 17:35SPEAKER_04: So how would you feel if you were in a room, you're about to record your phone batteries at 100% and then zero?
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: I feel so annoyed, dude.
- 17:49SPEAKER_04: Like charging this thing takes now your phone's gotta take a nappy nap.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm like, are you serious?
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: Are you for real right now?
- 17:56SPEAKER_04: Like right.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: So, more recent claims as of 2023 state that the lights in the dining room flicker on and off, and they flickered on and off twice and then completely shut off.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Is that paranormal or is that just really old wiring?
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: Well, it occurred while the guests were learning about the specifics of the murders.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: Make a big little note.
- 18:28SPEAKER_04: If it was really old wiring, it has really funny timing.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: You know, sometimes ghosts have a good sense of humor.
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: They do.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: They really do.
- 18:40SPEAKER_04: And that is what I have for the first floor.
- 18:42SPEAKER_04: So now we're gonna go ahead and go up to the second floor.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: So wait, nothing happens in the living room?
- 18:50SPEAKER_04: No.
- 18:50SPEAKER_04: This says mainly in the kitchen and the dining room.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: Even though Andrew was murdered in the living room?
- 18:57SPEAKER_04: Even though he was murdered in the living room.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: That's crazy.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: Well, maybe I have something on the living room.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: No, actually, I don't have anything on the living room.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: We're gonna put him red ladders.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: Nothing.
- 19:11SPEAKER_04: Heading up the stairs to the second floor.
- 19:15SPEAKER_04: Now we're in the Andrew and Abbey suite.
- 19:19SPEAKER_04: The activity in this suite is actually described as curious and just a tad mischievous.
- 19:26SPEAKER_04: So can you imagine what ghost would be haunting the Andrew and the Abbey suite?
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: I would assume it's Andrew and Abbey.
- 19:33SPEAKER_04: I would assume as well.
- 19:35SPEAKER_04: So a testimonial from 2002 tells us about a 12-year-old boy who claims to have felt someone touching his hair throughout the night.
- 19:45SPEAKER_04: Almost as if they were trying to, you know, soothe them to sleep.
- 19:49SPEAKER_04: Have you ever had like your mom just kind of patting your head when you're feeling sicky, you know?
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm laughing because you said 12-year-old boy.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: I thought we were talking about like a boy ghost, and I was like, where the hell does the 12-year-old die on the property?
- 20:05SPEAKER_04: You're like, where's this 12-year-old boy?
- 20:07SPEAKER_04: No, it's the 12-year-old living boy.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: Um, my mother never did that.
- 20:14SPEAKER_04: Oh.
- 20:16SPEAKER_04: Well, did you ever pat your own hair to soothe yourself to sleep?
- 20:21SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: No, but I I know what you're talking about.
- 20:24SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 20:25SPEAKER_04: So he claims to have felt someone touching his hair throughout the night.
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: And then guests also report brushing of the arms and feeling as if someone tucked them in for the night.
- 20:39SPEAKER_04: Okay, cute.
- 20:40SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 20:41SPEAKER_04: Very warm.
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: However, you know, people believe that this is Abby and her more motherly instincts maybe taking over and trying to establish that connection that she didn't seem to have with the Borden girls in her lifetime.
- 21:00SPEAKER_04: However, there are also reports of a club falling on its own in the middle of the night.
- 21:09SPEAKER_04: Now, I don't know if this is like a golf club or some kind of like walking club.
- 21:15SPEAKER_04: I don't really know what kind of club it is, but it's like I'm assuming it's like a stick or like a cane.
- 21:21SPEAKER_04: But this club is associated with Andrew.
- 21:24SPEAKER_04: It was his in life and it was what he used.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: And this club falls on its own in the middle of the night.
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: In 2023, two guests believe that they actually may have engaged with a malevolent entity in the room.
- 21:40SPEAKER_04: Oh no.
- 21:42SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 21:43SPEAKER_04: So, do you know what a spirit box is?
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: I do, but I feel like you shouldn't explain anyway for those who don't.
- 21:51SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 21:52SPEAKER_04: So a spirit box is an electronic device that rapidly sweeps through AM and FM radio frequencies.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: To attempt communication with paranormal activities, paranormal entities.
- 22:05SPEAKER_04: These two guests use a spirit box during the witching hour.
- 22:11SPEAKER_04: The witching hour, I have heard, is said to be the time when the veil between this life and the next is kind of thin, and when it's a little bit easier to contact the other side essentially.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: Oh, spooky.
- 22:28SPEAKER_04: On the spirit box, they received responses like hell.
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: Hell?
- 22:35SPEAKER_05: Hell.
- 22:36SPEAKER_05: Oh, hell.
- 22:39SPEAKER_05: Monster.
- 22:41SPEAKER_05: Demons?
- 22:43SPEAKER_05: Monster, I guess so.
- 22:45SPEAKER_05: And holy water.
- 22:48SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 22:52SPEAKER_04: Spooky.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: So now we're gonna head over to the Lizzie and Emma suite.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: As mentioned before, this is one of our more active rooms.
- 23:07SPEAKER_04: And activity in this suite is said to range from harmless to downright disturbing.
- 23:15SPEAKER_04: The most unsettling account reportedly happened in July 2017.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: So this was recent.
- 23:22SPEAKER_04: Very recent, like in the last decade.
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: A guest claimed that they felt hands squeezing their neck and a choking sensation three times during the night.
- 23:36SPEAKER_04: Have you ever been woken up in your sleep because you feel like you're choking?
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: No.
- 23:41SPEAKER_04: I have due to medical reasons, and um, it's fucking scary.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: Like you're suddenly like not able to breathe, and it's like what is happening?
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: Because like you're so you're disoriented.
- 23:52SPEAKER_04: More typical testimonials are doors moving on their own, or maybe like a drawer closing in the middle of the night.
- 24:02SPEAKER_04: So I feel like a lot of furniture gets messed around with, but again, there's poltergeist activity reported in the home.
- 24:09SPEAKER_04: So it makes sense.
- 24:11SPEAKER_04: So one report in 2023, so again, these are very recent, 2023.
- 24:19SPEAKER_04: Two friends were supposedly startled awake by loud footsteps outside of the door, and then a booming male voice was heard.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure what was said, but then on the dresser, there were coins that belonged to Andrew Borden, and they started to slide on the surface of the wooden dresser.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: I guess he was afraid they were taking his money.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: His money for the modern updates.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Like, how dare you spend it on electricity?
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 24:59SPEAKER_04: How dare you flesh the toilet?
- 25:02SPEAKER_04: Oh, they didn't have plumbing.
- 25:05SPEAKER_04: I forgot to mention that.
- 25:06SPEAKER_04: They did not have plumbing, like they had a chamber cloud for everyone.
- 25:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: Though, like, when was plumbing like well, it's like you said they were social lights, so they were probably should have been one of the first people to get plumbing.
- 25:21SPEAKER_04: And he could afford plumbing.
- 25:23SPEAKER_04: It was a thing in the 1860s.
- 25:26SPEAKER_04: I do know that that plumbing was available.
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: So, full-body apparitions are rare, but apparently one person was lucky enough to see a wispy figure in the suite.
- 25:42SPEAKER_04: And in their testimonial, they stated that they saw this apparition hovering over the bed.
- 25:48SPEAKER_04: That's scary.
- 25:50SPEAKER_04: Now we're gonna head over to the John V.
- 25:52SPEAKER_04: Morse suite.
- 25:55SPEAKER_04: So, you might be wondering, where did this name come from?
- 26:00SPEAKER_04: John V.
- 26:01SPEAKER_04: Morse.
- 26:03SPEAKER_04: It's named after Lizzie's uncle, who actually stayed in this room the night before the murders occurred, and this is also where Abby Borden's body was discovered.
- 26:15SPEAKER_04: John was actually suspected of being the murderer, but he never went to trial for the crime.
- 26:20SPEAKER_04: Why didn't he go to trial?
- 26:22SPEAKER_04: I think it was just easier to blame Lizzie.
- 26:24SPEAKER_04: No one could really place him in the house at the time.
- 26:26SPEAKER_04: Like, yes, he had stayed the night before, but no.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: That really doesn't mean much.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: It's crazy though.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Imagine like staying the night at someone's house, and then the next day.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: The one that you just did, I cry.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: Crying, screaming, throwing up.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: All the things.
- 26:52SPEAKER_04: So the encounters in this room do not always have a direct tie to Abby's murder, but based on accounts, it seems clear that her spirit is there.
- 27:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, I would imagine so.
- 27:07SPEAKER_04: I would too.
- 27:08SPEAKER_04: I mean, this is where her body was discovered.
- 27:11SPEAKER_04: So, an encounter in 2020 states that the guests woke up to a woman's voice in their ear.
- 27:18SPEAKER_04: Again, not sure what it was said, and other testimonials have written about being tucked in in the middle of the night.
- 27:26SPEAKER_04: We also have reports of guests being tucked in in the Andrew and Abby suite.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: So in the bedroom where Abby stayed, we have people being tucked in, and in the room that she was killed, we have people being tucked in.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: That's interesting, though, that the people don't experience that in the Lizzie suite.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 27:47SPEAKER_04: Especially since, you know, Andrew married Abby when Lizzie was about five.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: I'm not too sure.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: But again, they're strained relationships.
- 28:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:06SPEAKER_04: But visitors have described this spirit as motherly.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: And this was with the claim that this guest felt someone sit on the bed with them while they tried to sleep.
- 28:17SPEAKER_04: You know, there's gotta be balance here.
- 28:20SPEAKER_04: So there's apparently another spirit present in this room that likes to pull the blankets off of people and make noises while people try to sleep.
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: Now we're gonna go ahead and head on up to the attic.
- 28:33SPEAKER_04: The attic was previously the third floor, and it was mainly storage except for the one room, which was Maggie's room.
- 28:42SPEAKER_04: As mentioned, she was their live-in-maid, and she was the only other person in the house at the time of the murders.
- 28:49SPEAKER_04: After or during the conversion to the uh bed and breakfast, the Hosea Knowlton room and the Andrew Jenning rooms are were added, and they are now on the third floor as well.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: But these two rooms are not without their own tragic spirit origin stories.
- 29:09SPEAKER_04: We'll get into that.
- 29:11SPEAKER_04: So, the Bridget Sullivan room, Maggie's room.
- 29:16SPEAKER_04: In this room, there are frequent reports of orbs and of a shadowy figure standing by the bed.
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: The rocking chair is also apparently a spirit favorite.
- 29:29SPEAKER_04: So lots of activity on the rocking chair, rocking back and forth, to the point that one guest even resorted to moving the chair in the hallway due to the activity that was happening around it.
- 29:40SPEAKER_04: And the Andrew Jennings room.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: A 2018 testimonial claimed that a ball and a boat toy in the room moved on their own.
- 29:52SPEAKER_04: What kind of spirits did you do you think would be excessively rocking in a rocking chair?
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: And moving a ball and a boat toy.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, rocking chair kind of makes me think of like a motherly figure, you know.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: Um, and I know like toys that's mostly associated with child spirits.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: But like there shouldn't be children involved because as far as we know, no children died.
- 30:19SPEAKER_04: I want to tell you about Eliza Borden.
- 30:23SPEAKER_04: Eliza Borden was the second wife of Loudwick Borden, who was Lizzie's great uncle, and she lived next door.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 30:34SPEAKER_04: This is one that I happened to dig up in my research that I just feel like her story needs to be told, and it explains a little bit about what may be going on in that third floor.
- 30:47SPEAKER_04: So, second wife of Loudwick Borden, again, Lizzie's great uncle.
- 30:53SPEAKER_04: This man had four wives in his lifetime, and he would marry quickly after his previous wife have died had died, and most of his wives died often from childbirth.
- 31:07SPEAKER_04: Not Eliza, though.
- 31:10SPEAKER_04: Eliza was born in 1811 and she married Loudwick in 1843.
- 31:16SPEAKER_04: They had three children in a very short time span.
- 31:20SPEAKER_04: They had Maria, Eliza Ann, and Holder.
- 31:25SPEAKER_04: Holder was the only boy.
- 31:28SPEAKER_04: Six months after giving birth to Holder, Eliza's mental health took a took a turn.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: Many people believed that she was struggling with postpartum depression, and with no treatment for postpartum depression back then, she had no help or relief for her symptoms.
- 31:54SPEAKER_04: So one day, Eliza took Eliza Ann and Holder down to the basement, and in the basement there was a large cistern that held water for the family to use.
- 32:11SPEAKER_04: Eliza placed the two children in the deep tank and she walked away.
- 32:18SPEAKER_04: The children drowned.
- 32:20SPEAKER_04: Eliza Ann was three, and Holder was a baby, six to eight months or so.
- 32:30SPEAKER_04: After leaving her children, Eliza went upstairs.
- 32:34SPEAKER_04: She took her husband's straight razor and she slit her own throat.
- 32:42SPEAKER_04: She died almost instantly at the age of 37.
- 32:46unknown: Yeah.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: Four things.
- 32:48SPEAKER_04: Again, this happened in the house next door, but people believe that the spirits of the children, and maybe even Eliza, are now on the third floor, and those are the third floor ghosts.
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: So in the last room of the third floor, the Josea Knowlton room, people actually do report hearing a child laugh in the room.
- 33:13SPEAKER_04: And a guest in 2016 wrote that a young voice was encouraging them to play in the middle of the night.
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: And a few months earlier, a group of guests shared that they caught a little girl's apparition on the third floor.
- 33:29SPEAKER_04: In 2017, guests reported spotting kids climbing into the bed that their father was sleeping in, you know, looking for a fatherly figure.
- 33:40SPEAKER_04: But not all guests report children.
- 33:43SPEAKER_04: Some report a taller figure with blonde hair dressed in a black suit, which is a little strange because this description does not match any of the Bordens.
- 33:53SPEAKER_04: Lizzie Borden had light brown hair, and by the time of Andrew Borden's death, he was fully gray.
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: So we don't know who this mysterious blonde-haired man could be.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: But the third floor is said to be haunted by children.
- 34:09SPEAKER_04: Many believe they were the children of Eliza Borden.
- 34:13SPEAKER_04: And it's because of what happened with Eliza Borden and you know her mental health that kinda gave more speculation during Lizzie's trial.
- 34:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I can see that um I found this while I was researching, and I felt like her story just needs to be told as well.
- 34:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, kind of a silver lining.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: I'm glad the children have people to play with now.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: And a cool rocking chair.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: And a cool rocking chair.
- 34:56SPEAKER_04: Heck yeah.
- 34:57SPEAKER_04: Keep on rocking children.
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: Alright, so now we're gonna run on down to the cellar.
- 35:04SPEAKER_04: Now the cellar was the focus during the investigation of the murders, and that's because it was in the cellar that the police found a hatchet without a handle.
- 35:18SPEAKER_04: A lot of people do believe that Lizzie had an axe, and you know that's what caused 40 wax.
- 35:29SPEAKER_04: A lot of people believe that it was an axe that was the murder weapon because of the blunt nature of the yeah, yeah, the blunt truth.
- 35:40SPEAKER_04: It was never actually confirmed that it was an axe.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: Well, they didn't really have CSI back in the day.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: So, like, you know, they were working with what they had.
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: So in the cellar, the police found a hatchet without a handle, but the head was supposedly coated in a layer of dust, so that made it looked unused.
- 36:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Well, and like you're not gonna use a hatchet if it doesn't have a handle.
- 36:05SPEAKER_04: And you know, it's covered in dust, so it's been sitting there for a bit.
- 36:08SPEAKER_04: But apparently, it was suspiciously placed.
- 36:13SPEAKER_04: Apparently, it just looks like it was placed there to look unused.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, it doesn't look suspicious.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: You see someone with a lot of forced drama, and you're just like, oh, okay, that's sus.
- 36:28SPEAKER_04: The hatchet head.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: It looked like I don't know what did this, but it looks like it could be that, even though it's covered in dust and doesn't have it.
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: Ultimately, this was this hatchet head was not confirmed to be the blade used for the murders.
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: Again, they never actually found what the murder weapon was.
- 36:53SPEAKER_04: Supposedly the handle was was burned.
- 36:56SPEAKER_04: It's a whole thing.
- 36:57SPEAKER_04: There, again, I didn't want to focus so much on the tr the on the true crime aspect of it as I did the ghost content because I unearthed so much ghost content, I was like up to my eyeballs.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Well, and this is a spooky podcast, not a true crime podcast.
- 37:14SPEAKER_04: There have been testimonials of disturbing encounters in the cellar, but not just from guests, from guides at the bread and breakfast as well.
- 37:25SPEAKER_04: And they don't scare easily.
- 37:27SPEAKER_04: No, I mean they gotta work there because like they're used to it.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 37:32SPEAKER_04: These guides have shared experiences of being choked and shoved.
- 37:39SPEAKER_04: Some testimonials actually reference a face appearing suddenly in the cellar, but it has no distinguishing features.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: So, like, how do you know if it's a face if there's no distinguishing features?
- 37:53SPEAKER_04: Maybe it's just like you know.
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: Uncanny valley, or like maybe it's like there's like where the eyes should be.
- 38:03SPEAKER_04: It's like looks like a clay mold, you know what I'm talking about?
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:08SPEAKER_04: There's like a scary movie I'm thinking of that would have been perfect.
- 38:14SPEAKER_04: Like it's it's Insidious 3 at one point, like she it looks like a face, but like it's not.
- 38:20SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, it's probably just doesn't have any like you can't really see eyes on it or a mouth, but you know it has like the general outline of a face.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: Okay, gotcha.
- 38:32SPEAKER_04: So the face has no distinguishing features, but for some reason the name Joseph is getting tossed around.
- 38:41SPEAKER_04: And there is no Joseph.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: Do we know a Joseph?
- 38:44SPEAKER_04: No, we don't know a Joseph.
- 38:45SPEAKER_04: There is no Joseph closely tied to the boarding house.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: Joseph, where did you come from?
- 38:53SPEAKER_04: Where did you go?
- 38:55SPEAKER_04: Where did you come from?
- 38:57SPEAKER_04: Cotton I Joe.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: Joseph.
- 39:03SPEAKER_04: So in the cellar, clear EVP, that's electronic voice phenomenon, from the cellar was heard in a 2018 testimonial, and it says that an eerie male presence just uttered the words help me.
- 39:22SPEAKER_04: And also, Andrew is said as well.
- 39:26SPEAKER_04: I feel like it goes without saying that there is so much reported activity in this bed and breakfast.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:35SPEAKER_04: Again, there was so much that it's very spooky.
- 39:38SPEAKER_04: There's so much that came out of this and this research.
- 39:44SPEAKER_04: Ultimately, I do believe that this place could really be haunted.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: And if it's not haunted, just the vibe is alone.
- 39:55SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 39:56SPEAKER_04: It's very calm.
- 39:58SPEAKER_04: The spooky side of me, spooky adventure side of me wants just to like stay in the room, just to say I've done it.
- 40:06SPEAKER_04: But the like other side of me that's a little bit more chicken shit is like, no, don't do it.
- 40:15SPEAKER_04: You're gonna bring something, you're gonna you're gonna see some shit.
- 40:18SPEAKER_04: And maybe one day I will be brave enough.
- 40:23SPEAKER_04: Would you ever be brave enough?
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'd do it.
- 40:28SPEAKER_04: You're braver than me.
- 40:30SPEAKER_04: Maybe we'll do it together.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: It's not like you're gonna die.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: I could get choked.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: You could, or you could sleep through the night.
- 40:39SPEAKER_04: I could get tucked in.
- 40:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you could get tucked in.
- 40:43SPEAKER_04: What if you got tucked in and I got choked, or vice versa.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: That'd be crazy.
- 40:50SPEAKER_04: I'd be like, I had the best night ever.
- 40:53SPEAKER_04: But that is all that I have today for you for the Lizzie Bordenhouse.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, that was creepy.
- 40:59SPEAKER_02: I loved it.
- 41:00SPEAKER_04: I loved it too.
